SLAVES WANTED @ CHERRY TREE! HEREWARD PRESENTERS HIT THE ROAD Hereward FM Breakfast Show presenters Kev and Abby are still arguing over who drives better – men or women. Thing is, when they took mock tests with Peter Richardson from Roadrunner they both failed on the same thing... driving too slowly on the Parkway, not checking their blind spots as they pulled away from junctions and observation. Kev told ESP - "I’m totally gutted, as I tried so hard to get everything right. The things we failed on were a bit pathetic to be honest, as I did check my mirrors all the time! OK I didn’t look over my shoulder enough, but my observation levels were intense from start to finish! As for driving too slowly, I didn’t realise that going 50mph on the Parkway was a reason to fail! And I know for a fact that I am a better and safer driver than Abby." Abby told us - "All week Kev was going on and on that he was a better driver than me, so for us both to fail was hilarious. The instructor said that he thought I was better, so it’s one up for the girls. Ha! If I’m being totally serious, Kev does have far more driving experience than me, and having been in the car with him a few times, there's absolutely nothing wrong with his driving at all. His ego may be damaged, but that’s about all. Next we’re going to have a Karting challenge, as the row goes on, and there’s more info on www.hereward. co.uk "

As part of his fundraising Imperial Bento on Broadway will be donating £10 from every £16.50 meal that night, plus there’ll be a fab raffle. Macmillan fund some of the nurses at

Kicking off summer in style is the Peterborough Festival, which begins on June 28 with the Mayor’s Parade from Cathedral Square. ESP will be there, with our Dance Crew giving out goodies, so come along and join in the party! Both bands are part of the line-up for the ‘Picnic in the Park’ on Saturday July 12, together with the strolling band Redbeans ‘n’ Rice who will get the party started by arriving in the style of the famous funeral marching band in the Bond film ‘Live and Let Die’. All this plus dancing, real ales, circus entertainment and a spectacular firework finale. There’s loads happening throughout the ten day festival from July 11 to July 20 including Fascinating Aida who return with their unique blend of keenly observed humour, amusingly delivered through song and kick off their new national tour. The date that they visit The Broadway has changed form June 26 to July 18. Dave Gilmour, founder member of Pink Floyd said of them – “It’s so strange to watch such an eerily accurate version of yourself perform live on a stage! They do the Floyd thing so well, but still manage to put their own stamp of humour in there. Very funny!” These guys have been performing Pink Floyd songs for over fifteen years so their musicianship should be amazing, and they’ve promised even more lavish production this time around with more lasers, more lights, more complex projections and even better inflatables! The Times described them as ‘the best tribute band in the world,’ so get booking now! Tickets £24.50. Box office: 01733 316100.

QUINN’S IN FOR BROADWAY PANTO!

The celebs hit town recently to launch the fantastic new panto Aladdin at The Broadway this year… oh yes they did!

Brian Capron (Tricky Dicky from Corrie) will play baddie Abanazer, Ray Quinn the swinging star of X Factor is Aladdin and Fay Tozer from pop group Steps will be the sexy Slave of the Ring in Downtown Productions’ new panto. ESP grabbed a word with the stars of the show and will bring you more on the panto in future issues, but it sounds like it’ll be a corker with some great sets and a few surprises.

Ray told ESP he can’t wait and let slip he’ll be doing a bit of flying in the show – “I’m really excited, I know I’m going to have loads of fun which is my main priority in life! It’s great to be back in Peterborough as I was last here on my tour. It’s going to be very special and to be a part of that is very special for me. I remember as a child there was nothing better than a good panto.” It’s the first time the theatre’s staged its very own panto and will be up against Cinderella at The Key and Snow White at The Cresset so you’ll be spoilt for choice. Radio station Lite FM are the radio partners

for the show and Programme Controller Gregg Nunney told ESP – “I’m delighted that Lite FM are teaming up with The Broadway for this year’s panto. We’re all huge fans of X Factor, so to have one of its biggest names on board is a real coup. Ray only just lost out to Leona Lewis – and look how big she is now!

It’s going to be a huge family show – and Brian Capron will make a fantastic baddie. It’s what he does best! We’ll have loads of news and updates over the coming months on 106.8 FM.” Aladdin opens on December 6 and tickets are available on 01733 316100.

PETERBOROUGH SUPPORTS HEROES

Let’s hear it for Werrington pub regulars who’re trying to cheer up our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. They’re not just supping pints at The Dragon you know – they’ve been gathering up essential goodies for the troops, (including copies of ESP Magazine!) packing them into shoeboxes and shipping ‘em out to the lads and lasses serving their country. Gloria Aschettino from Werrington has been the main lady behind the cunning plan and decided to get the project going when her son Liam, who’s in the Royal Engineers, told her they’re lacking loads of vital goodies. Jackie and Janek Skutela, landlady and landlord of the pub got right behind the idea and along with Philippa Millward, and also Angie Wilson from the Minster Sheltered Housing schemes in Sweetbriar Lane and Martins Court have collected loads of treats. We were chuffed to hear they’d even included copies of ESP so the guys and girls keep up to date with what’s happening in their home town. Let’s hope pics of Face of ESP, Kerry Bates are cheering them up out in the desert! Linda told ESP – “Liam told me they’re really short of many basic essentials like toothbrushes and cups and many of them don’t have families to send them any letters or treats. We just wanted to let them know we’re thinking of them and we’re very proud. Most people in Peterborough are behind the troops and want to do their bit, so we hope they’ll get behind our shoebox appeal.” There’ll be a fundraising auction and Family Fun Day at The Dragon on bank Holiday Monday August 25 too, more on that next month. They’re collecting more goodies to send out in the shoeboxes so stil need plenty of donations – you can drop them in at The Dragon or call the pub for details on 01733 750866.

BACCARA BREATHES HOPE INTO CITY NIGHT SCENE

DUTCH COURAGE TO GO ON LITE

I came in for some stick from Lite FM breakfast show host Keith Dalton on my Wednesday morning slot, the day after a blind official got Italy’s Euro 2008 campaign off to a nightmare start by gifting Holland an offside goal. Keith played me the Musical Youth hit, Pass The Dutchie and put some wind-up bloke on the phone whose van business was in demand with sales of the Van Nistelrooy and Van Basten model going particularly well. At least I had the opportunity to be in an all-together more sensible environment the week before on the same radio station as a guest on the Two Posh Geezers show (Wednesdays 7-8pm). Presenter Phil Adlam and I had intelligent conversation around the Euros and local sporting stories. But if it’s ramblings of an old man and his aspiring radio pupil you’re after then tune into Keith and I on 106.8 every Wednesday 88.30am. You can email studio@lite1068.com or give us a bell while on air 01733 704106 to join in on any banter we may be having at the time. Just don’t mention the football.

It's taken long enough but at last there's something fresh and new to look forward to when heading for a night out on the town! The former ‘Café en Seine’ on Broadway’s been transformed into a stylish and 'want to be seen in' venue offering five separate areas with a total capacity for 800 revellers. It's cost half a million quid to revive the place and it's nothing more than our city's night scene deserves.

Baccara is the new buzzword around town and with a classy and elegant décor plus DJs including Trevor Nelson, Jeremy Healy, Semaus Haji, DJ Sassy, Steve Smooth Sutherland and the Hed Kandi tour nights apparently already

Basically you’ll now part with a few quid to get access to all three venues, made accessible via a ‘Time Tunnel’, which has been constructed with sound and lighting upgrades to ensure you don’t lose that retro atmosphere. These upgrades now mean we’re blessed with a 1,300 capacity venue that offers plenty of diversity. It worked for Liquid, Chicago Rock and Envy when critics said it wouldn’t and I’m confident the queues will be even longer across the road from Baccara from now on. It’s free entry until 10pm, £2 from 10pm ‘til 12am and £3 after. See you there!

Shannon (pictured with David and her mum) is deaf and is also going blind. She’s already mastering Braille and was desperate for a Braillenote (like a laptop) to be able to do her schoolwork and convert it into text for her teachers to read. The machine costs £4,000 and the people of Peterborough who were there that night more than doubled the target set, by buying auctioned boxing items and memorabilia and making personal donations. The remaining money raised for Shannon has been put in a trust for her future education. Although Kevin’s now retired from boxing promoting and training (he’s still seeing out Matt Skelton’s career), he’ll continue to put on dinners with sporting greats for us to enjoy. His next event at the Marriott (September 4) is Hard Men of Football with Ron Harris, Tommy Smith and Norman Hunter. For tickets and more information call Kevin on: 07872 601467.

dontscrapthetap . c o m

I’m personally looking forward to Sunday nights at Baccara where you can chill and soak up Soul and Motown from 8pm until 2am. Baccara offers a free membership scheme and you can join online at www.clubbaccara.co.uk.

Baccara will help give Broadway its buzz back - and the new-look Reflex, which has undergone something of a refurb along with changes to Edwards and Flares, is just what the night doctor ordered!

Promoter Kevin Sanders brought undisputed cruiserweight champion of the world, David Haye, to the city’s Marriott Hotel last month where he hosted his first-ever dinner event and helped to raise approximately £9,500 for 11 year-old Shannon Fassler from Werrington.

www.esp3.net ( July ) w w w.

It’s a breath of fresh air so let’s hope it helps bring people back to the city centre who’ve been getting their nightlife kicks elsewhere. Although it looks like they’ve already assembled the right ingredients for a successful venue that should stand the test of time, here’s hoping they place continued investment in their marketing, promotions and PR activities. This is because you have to work twice as hard to get quality people through your doors on a consistent basis.

PRAISE FOR OLD TOHO VENUE

Good to see a few changes have been made at the former Toho’s, which is now called Praise (how many of us are still calling it Toho’s?!) and it’s thanks to a new partner in the business, Mr Hussain, who owns the excellent Royal Spice restaurant on Park Road. That’s not to say Praise will be serving Indian cuisine, it remains a Chinese restaurant but has evolved into a Chinese and Thai fusion of dishes served buffet style, freshly cooked throughout the day and into the evening. Praise now offers a VIP lounge, business and conference facilities as well as the ever-popular cocktail bar. The official public opening is on July 3 so go take a look.

DEAN SPENDS A PENNY ON THE PULL

Dean Penny, who occasionally stands in for a shift at Man About Town sponsors, Clues, has been getting loads of stick from the boys. And it’s been well deserved too. Dean was at a stag do in Leeds where he was drunk enough to pull a bird (something he’s usually not very good at). He took her to a cheap hotel, did his two-minute hero routine between the sheets, went to sleep - and then wet the bed. Soaked and smelly, the poor girl awoke traumatised and has been in counselling ever since. Dean, on the other hand, was spotted with an endless supply of Pampers in his shopping trolley last week.

MEET YOUR FACE OF ESP RECRUITER!

So we’ve kicked off our search for a new Face of ESP to replace the gorgeous Kerry Bates. The finals night is September 19 and that leaves plenty of scouting for me to do in the meantime (yummy). Entry rules are simple: • You don’t have to look like Kelly Brook (if you do then you’ll have a personal screening with me first) • You must be over 18 years of age or 18 on the night • You must have personality and a sense of humour

• You need to be sticking around locally for 12 months from September (none of this travelling or going to Uni lark please) • You need to make me look good when we make an entrance some place This year’s prize fund has already hit the £5,000 mark and rising, so you’ll no doubt be in for dozens of treats in what will be a year of fun and celebrity lifestyle. Visit www.esp3.net/face to enter or grab me or Facebook me for further details. Alternatively call us on 01733 579707 for the complete low-down.

CIAOS OUT TO:

• ‘Butu’ – what’s next, training to African tribal music?! • Alice, Kerrie & Kerry – when’s our next orgy with Phil? • Charlotte @ The Harvester – any ice cream you don’t want? • Donna – how about that northern brew…? • To the GHL posse I left behind – it’s been emotional… • Trish – ‘appy birthday. TIM E TO TAKE GASTRI C ACTION?

Let’s get one thing straight - Fern Britton is perfec tly entitled to get a gastric band fitted and she doesn ’t need permission from the public to do so. But that said, the whole thing was handled so badly, she might as well have hired Osama Bin Laden’s PR team for what keeping it a secret has done for her popularity. She really hasn’t done herself any favours at all. OK, so I agree in principle that people in the public eye should still be allowed some privacy and on that theory, she shouldn’t have had to make it public – but then again, I’m not the one earning sackloads of cash as the face of a well known diet crispbread. We loved Fern fat, we loved her infectious giggle , her confidence and her ‘devil may care’ attitude and we loved her even more when she apparently lost weigh t the ‘proper’ way, sensibly, without the fad diets and without getting obsessed. I heard her interviewed on a radio show and she said she didn’t really want to talk about her weight loss as she hated diets. She said she had done it for herself, deciding to take control of her own body as she moved into her fifties and that she’d achiev ed her weight loss by simply “eating less of her favour ite things and exercising more.” What a woman! Doctors have been telling us that’s the key to losing weight for years, but how many of us have actually taken that advice and made it work for us? Let’s just say that government statist ics estimate that 66% of us will be overweight or obese by 2010. Nuff said. Fern was our heroine, the one who’d actually succeeded where so many of us had failed, the one who showed us the way and whose example made us think twice about shelling out for those ‘quick fix’ diet pills. If lovely, down-toearth, one of us, Fern could do it, so could we! And then the bombshell dropped. Fernie was as ordina ry as the rest of us, a slave to the callings of Dr Dairy Milk and just as in need of a miracle cure as we are. If only she’d been honest with us, admitted that she’d finally had enough of having to fold her belly into knickers the size of Captain Pugwash’s sails and had decided she needed a bit of extra help to take action and get healthy. Sure there would have been a moment of shock and sadness at ‘our Fern’ selling out, but we would’ve understood, we would ’ve empathised, we would’ve marvelled that she wasn’ t 30 stone despite being married to a top pudding chef and most importantly, we would’ve continued to love her. Then it would’ve all blown over before she even made it into a size 16.

LESS HASTE, LESS SPEED. Having been a bad girl recently and caught speeding (I was doing 36 in a 30) I had to go on one of those Speed Workshop things to learn all about why speeding is bad. The course itself was surprisingly interesting and I learned loads of useful stuff, even if I am now obsessed with going for a wee before getting in the car (if you crash, the lap belt bursts your bladder apparently). The thing was though, that I spent three hours being educated that speed was bad, slowing down was good, and how no journey was ever so important that you should hurry and break the speed limit to get there on time, which was all good sensible advice. Until you consider, that is, that the letter I was sent inviting me on the course, and giving me all the details, contained a very stark warning about what the consequences would be if I was late arriving. Oh the irony.

LEE, YOU’RE TIRED I can’t bring myself to talk about the start of Big Brother this month because I’m still in mourning for the end of The Apprentice. So Lee ‘dinosaur impression’ McQueen beat Claire ‘pearl necklace’ Young to the top job with Sir Sugar, after they worked together to launch a new men’s fragrance. Amazing Lee won really, especially considering he chose to ignore his own Jonathan Ross like speech impediment and named their perfume ‘Roulette’. Genius. But as the days and weeks go on, I’m beginning to think Lee got the booby prize. It seems that every time I switch on the telly, be it Weakest Link, GMTV, I’m a Celebrity, 8 out of 10 Cats, a ‘fired’ Apprentice candidate seems to be grinning back at me. So whilst poor old Lee is slogging his guts out as a 9-5 wage slave to increase Sir Al’s £800 million fortune, the other ‘failed’ candidates are sitting on panel shows laughing with Jimmy Carr and funding Porsches for just five minutes grief from Anne Robinson. Makes you wonder who the real winners are.

SummerFASHION Be bold and be beautiful, summer is here! ESP’s Joanne Quinney shows the wild side of fashion with tribal trends and bold brights… OK, it may be chucking it down one day and glorious sunshine the next, but this is no excuse to start slacking in the fashion stakes and blaming it on the weather. Stick to this summer’s key trends and you’ll be set. Girls and guys embrace those bright colours. Whatever colour takes your fancy, go for it in a gorgeous chiffon top or 80’s inspired ra-ra skirt (sorry guys that one’s not for you!). Get stuck into coral, electric blue, green and yellow, not all at once mind you! These bright colours are great for guys too, so stand out in a crowd whether you prefer a T-shirt or a shirt! Girls, maxi dresses are back for the second summer now, and they’re not the

easiest to wear. Make sure it cinches in at the waist and is the right length - not trailing on the floor behind you! There are some gorgeous prints and fabrics at the

moment, Warehouse have a great selection of tribal-inspired print dresses. Accessories haven’t got any smaller over the past year, chunky beads, stacked bangles and statement rings are still going strong, and they seem to be getting even chunkier. Inject this year’s turquoise into your accessory drawer for that added splash of colour; it livens up the plain wooden pieces. On the footwear front, gladiator sandals are everywhere – fact! Yes, they may not be the most flattering summer shoes we’ve ever had, but there are styles in most high street stores to cater for the least pretty of tootsies.

So, dare to be bold this season, there will be no shrinking violets with this trend. Unleash your wild side and go tribal, from head to toe!

The page that thinks Lenny Henry should star in a BBC1 sitcom where he runs a church in a small Midlands town. They could call it ‘The Vicar of Dudley.’

people should come along, bring a picnic and an umbrella - and we'll have a great night.” “All the comedy will be responsible,” added Jasper “and the humour is across the board. I don't normally do stand-up anymore, but for these shows I'll be writing some new material, and trying it out at a small comedy club beforehand.” Lenny was quick to tell me he’s a big fan of Jasper – “I think he's one of the greatest comics we've ever produced in this country,” – to which Jasper put his hand in his pocket, took out his wallet and hand it over to Lenny as if he was paying him to say nice things. “Oh there we go, £50 in my hand… Wait a minute, all that’s in your wallet is an old pound note. I haven’t seen one of those for years!” After they’d stopped laughing, there was just time to ask them one final question. What’s the best thing about being a comedian?

THE LAUGHTER MAKERS know why? Because Lenny ate them all.” Once the photos and TV interviews were finished I sat down with them in Elton Hall lounge and asked them what people can expect from Rock with Laughter night next month.

Lenny Henry and Jasper Carrott are two of Britain’s best-loved comedians. Over the last 30 years they’ve been familiar faces on our TV screens, and have performed to live audiences across the world. On August 15 they’re starring in Rock with Laughter at Elton Hall and recently made a flying visit to the city to talk about it. While I was waiting to talk to them there was a lot of banter between the pair of them. For example, while Anglia TV were trying to ask Jasper a serious question, Lenny popped up behind him unannounced and said - “Bald men, I like to lick their heads to see if it tastes of chicken.” Jasper responded with - “When I first met Lenny he lived near Dudley Zoo, and if you go there now they haven’t got any animals left, and do you

20

www.esp3.net ( July ) w w w.

“Well it does exactly what it says on the tin,” Jasper told me. “It’s comedy and music. We started off doing the shows every Christmas at the NEC, and due to the success decided to take them on the road this summer, playing at stately homes like Elton Hall. We also never made any money doing them in Birmingham because all Lenny’s family would turn up, and all want comp tickets!” Lenny laughed, pointed out this isn’t true and continued – “Normally when we do these shows at the NEC Jasper comperes, but we flipped coins and I'm compere this time, so it's my job to set out the vibe, get everybody settled, let them know where exits are… Just head for that cow in the next field! “We've got Jo Brand who has such a deadpan style when she's on stage. Women love her because she's so cheeky about men, and blokes love her because she's very blokey. Phil Jupitus will be performing with Ian Dury’s old band The Blockheads, and we’ve got Elkie Brooks and The Bootleg Beatles. “I think it’s going to be a time and a half, so

dontscrapthetap . c o m

“The best thing about being a comedian is that we can go anywhere and see anyone,” said Jasper, “whether it’s going down a coalmine, whether it be meeting Royalty, sports people, intellectuals - they all accept you as one of them. Absolutely, no two ways about that. I’ve travelled on the Queen’s flight with Prince Edward and I’ve been down a coalmine. I’ve played football with Bobby Charlton and George Best, opened the batting with Denis Compton and played tennis with Virginia Wade – it’s an unbelievable life.” “And of course the showering experience is incredible!” Lenny chiped in with a grin and the banter continued - “I’d say showering with Virginia Wade was the highlight of my career,” said Jasper. “I wish I’d been there.” “Well, there wasn’t enough room.” Back to the question and what’s the best part of it for Lenny – “For me, it’s being your own boss. You’re your own editor, producer, director, writer, you choose who you collaborate with and when you do it. Also, it’s just you and the audience. It’s fantastic. When you do television or film there’s a six month to a year development time while someone makes a decision whether they think you’re good enough or deemed appropriate. When you’re a comic you can write a joke in the morning and that night you can be on stage trying that material out. I don’t think there’s a job like that anywhere.” Rock With Laughter is on August 15 at Elton Hall. Tickets are available from The Broadway box office, Stamford Arts Centre or on 01603 660444.

JOKES OF THE MONTH

"To be or not to be... that is the first question you'll be asked if you ever apply for a job as a bee keeper." - Richard Herring

"I've got one of those summer colds at the moment. The one where you sneeze and you know something has just left your body, but you're not quite sure where it went to." - Zoe Lyons "When the producer of Have I Got News For You told me I had to stop adlibbing during the show, well, I didn't know what to say. I was speechless. " - Paul Merton

BOOK BOND IS BACK In case you haven't heard, a new James Bond book Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks was published last month. I've just finished reading it, and it's pretty good. If you're a fan of the films, particularly the Sean Connery ones then you’ll definitely enjoy it. Written to celebrate the centenary of Ian Fleming’s birth in 1908, Faulks was asked by the Fleming estate to pick up from where the last Ian Fleming Bond adventure finished and is set at the height of the cold war in 1967. Faulks also gave an amusing take on 007 for the Radio 4 quiz show The Write Stuff imagining Bond popping down Sainsbury's for his weekly shop. "Bond lowered himself through a ventilation grille in the ceiling above the savoury dip aisle. Ignoring the selection of instant mashed potato ’Cadbury's SMERSH?’ he thought ruefully. He eliminated the three people ahead of him in the queue by triggering a lethal dart from the adapted handle of his twin exhaust wire trolley…" Anyway, I can highly recommend Devil May Care. It's out now in all good bookshops and is well worth reading.

ENGLAND’S POSH JOE-KER Congratulations to Posh goalkeeper Joe Lewis on his call up to the England squad last month. Although he didn't get a chance to make his full debut, Joe made a big impression at one of the press conferences when a journalist asked him what was the biggest difference between Fabio Capello and Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry. Joe replied... "Capello's English is better."

NEXT MONTH: I have some very exciting news about my ‘Mr Posh – Monocle Campaign’. There’s been some interesting developments just as this issue went to press, so don’t miss next month.

SHOW WAS FAB AT 40!

The sun shone big style helping make the fortieth East of England Show in Peterborough a massive success and ESP was there to join in the fun. For the first time many exhibitors were housed in the fantastic new ‘exec exhibition hall’ including ESP Magazine. It was great to meet up with readers and we dished out loads of mags and goodies. The ESP Dance Crew were part of the main stage entertainment and opened the fashion shows throughout the weekend which included ESP models showing off some of the great clobber you could buy at the Show. Kev Lawrence and Abby from the Hereward FM breakfast show hosted the stage, compering the fashion shows and we hear Abby took a shine to some of the dresses, while Kev didn’t know where to look when Jemima took to the stage in a gorgeous RAF Collection bikini! Later on they were getting down to Disco-tastic Boney M at the evening concert. Saturday and Sunday saw great family entertainment in the main arena with the Dancing Diggers, Royal Artillery Motorcycle Display Team and Devil’s Horsemen providing exciting, adrenalin filled displays. This year the Food Hall shifted undercover into the main hall and saw ESP nutritionist Karen Devine joining celeb chefs Lesley Waters and James Tanner to promote some yummy local foods. Chief Executive Andrew Mercer told ESP – “With tens of thousands of happy visitors, this year’s Show has been another exceptional event for us. We are delighted with the success of Free Farming Friday, as well as the new layout to the Show, incorporating our brand new exhibition hall, exec Peterborough. It was certainly great to see everyone really enjoying themselves over the three days.”

HEALTH and beauty Joanne Cooper has the ESP guide to looking hot and healthy this summer...

BRONZED AND BEAUTIFUL

It’s not only the fashion world moving into summer styles – beauty is once again turning bright, bold and bronzed in time for holiday season! Even if the weather isn’t perfect you can still get that high summer look with some of the products we’ve tried this month. Whether it’s the latest bronzers or bright-make up fit for beach or bar, we’ve got your complete summer make-up survival guide! First up is a beauty staple - think summer make-up, think bronzer. The holiday season is well and truly upon us, and whether you’re flying off to sunnier shores or staying here in Peterborough you can achieve a sunkissed glow so good that nobody will ever know you haven’t been sunning yourself in St Tropez! So how do you choose the right bronzer to give you a foolproof glow? Our resident bronzer expert Becca Evans has done the hard work for you and tested some top products!

STYLING HEAVEN

Make sure you arm yourself with the right tools to create summer’s musthave styles with the professional range of brushes from TRESemmé. And for the month of July only, each full size brush comes with a free finetoothed tail comb (while stocks last) so you’ll have no excuse for bad hair days! The free tail comb is a real multi-tasker – use it for sectioning hair when putting it up or braiding, backcombing height into styles, or run it gently through dry hair before straightening to ensure no knots remain. The ultra fine teeth sweep through hair to tease out tangles and their alternating lengths from long to short are perfectly designed to make backcombing a breeze. The brushes are available to pick up from Boots, Superdrug, Tesco, Asda and independent chemists in our area, from £4.99.

ESP LOVES… …New Benefit Posietint. Following in the footsteps of big sister and now iconic product ‘Benetint’, Benefit’s new pink-tinted lip and cheek stain is the ultimate multi-tasker! This little gem blends easily and lasts for hours! To get your hands on some, visit John Lewis or Boots in Queensgate. Benefit Posietint - £ 22.50

Becca’s current favourite is MAC powder bronzer (Available online at www.maccosmetics.co.uk), “It's fantastic as soon as your brush touches the powder it turns into a light dust which means it gives you a really natural glow. It's also good for giving that bronzed look to your cheeks. “I wear bronzer as part of my daily makeup routine and before MAC I used Collection 2000 or Boots No.7 bronzing balls which are good value for money, but I’ve been converted - I definitely think powder is better. Plus I find bronzing balls go everywhere - I find them crushed all over my carpet. Very annoying!” Another current ESP favourite is the new Clinique limited edition shimmering tones powder quad in golden bronze, available at Boots in Queensgate or Serpentine Green. It gives slightly more shimmer than the MAC bronzer and has been specially formulated to last even when faced with the heat of the summer season. The retro styling of The Body Shop’s Sun Lustre Bronzer is another top buy with its light diffusing, moisture enriched formulation giving a wonderful bronze shimmer. Or if you’d prefer a slightly cheaper alternative, Rimmel and Maybelline both fit the bill with powder bronzers for around a fiver – so you can look beautifully bronzed whatever your budget! So now you’ve taken care of the sunkissed skin, time to experiment with some bright summer colours! There’s no better time to try bright make-up than when the sun’s out so why not take a look at the Inika cosmetics range? Their new festival make-up range (pictured) has a whole host of eye-poppingly bright colours to put the fun into your summer look… and it’s been formulated with natural ingredients especially for long summer nights – so if you forget to remove it at the end of the night, it won’t clog your pores. For a strong summer party look use Sage Eye Pencil – the green works brilliantly with sun-kissed skin and will have you standing out from the crowd perfectly! The Inika range is available at www.inikacosmetics.co.uk, where you can also find a range of make-up tips alongside the products – summer make up sorted!

NV HAIR AND BEAUTY TREATS

When NV Hair and Beauty in Dogsthorpe told us about the range of beauty treatments they offer, I went down straight away to check them out. I arrived to find the calm oasis of a treatment room, and the relaxation instantly began! Jenna Runciman is the resident beauty treatment expert and she worked her magic on me with three amazingly relaxing treatments. First was the hopi ear candle treatment, a de-stressing 40 minute process involving a candle being lit in each ear followed by a pressure point massage. It’s nowhere near as scary as it sounds! It’s so calming and Jenna tells me it helps with balance, headaches, sinus problems and sore throats among many other things. After my first ear candle experience, I had a fantastic prescribed facial which lasted for over an hour and left me so relaxed I was almost asleep! Not to mention my skin feeling soft and moisturised – the perfect base for me to try their brand new Airbase airbrush foundation make-up system. This system gives a flawless and light-as-air finish, with foundation, bronzer and blusher being applied through an airbrush. It’s perfect for special occasions as it’s designed to last for 12 hours. I left the salon feeling refreshed, relaxed and newly beautified with my make-up expertly applied…so thanks to Jenna and the team at NV for a brilliant day of pampering! During July and August, anyone who buys a full face Airbase make-up will receive a free eyebrow shape – even more reason to try out the new system! And on top of this, students and senior citizens get 10% off all treatments so what are you waiting for? To book a slot with Jenna or to find out more about their range of treatments, contact NV Hair and Beauty on 01733 894060.

Your brain controls everything about who you are and what you do. It controls mood, behaviour, metabolism, weight, balance, regulates blood pressure and heart rate, sleep/wake cycle, motor skills and not least of all it holds our countless memories. We experience the emotions of joy, happiness, fear, anger, anxiety etc. from our brain which sends a signal to the rest of the body. How the brain communicates and sends a signal is a bit like men and women - it talks and listens, (yes we know women talk and men have to listen!) It does this via nerve signals, these signals tell the body what to do. These signals are dependent on neurotransmitters which are chemicals that carry messages around the brain and body. Made up primarily of fats and water it’s no surprise that what we eat and the type of fluid we drink will affect the brain. The brain needs good levels of fluid and by that I mean water, it needs to be fully hydrated so that the ‘circuits’ work at optimum levels. When we’re dehydrated we lack concentration and mental alertness. Drinking plenty of fresh water daily is essential for helping brain output. Fats from natural sources such as fish, nuts (look at the walnut, it is shaped just like the brain, it is referred to as ‘brain’ food due to its nutrient content), seeds, olive oil, butter, avocado etc. are also vital. These fats have one thing in common, they are natural and used efficiently by your body. Seeds and nuts were an essential part of our ancestors’ diet, the rest being made from vegetables, fruits and other plants. They also ate wild game which is rich in Omega 3 fats which the brain needs to function, we have not evolved to be without these foods. OK we don’t generally hunt wild game but we still need Omega 3 fats from fish, dark green leaf veg and seeds. Other foods that serve the brain well • Good quality protein (especially eggs) • Keeping the blood sugar levels stable with natural wholegrain foods • High vegetable intake • Ginger • Cinnamon • Turmeric… to name a few!

It’s time to get your thinking caps on this month. Did you know that we only have a certain amount of brain cells and they start to decline in our mid-thirties. OK some of us act like we only have one brain cell at times, but if you know a certain amount die off, you’d want to put in the effort to look after what you have. 26

www.esp3.net ( July ) w w w.

dontscrapthetap . c o m

As the brain thrives on good nutrients it can also be affected by the chemicals that we take in. The brain ‘parts’ are sensitive to chemicals from the environment and also how we can ‘seek certain refuge’ with legal and illegal stimulants. Certain chemical stimulants change the chemistry and affect how we think, feel, act and behave. I read a piece by the singer Sting who said - ‘If there’s one thing that needs to be altered in this troubled world, it is the human mind’… well put I think! Confessions... Susan Saunders

We’re all going on a summer holiday… So picture the scene – after a bumpy ride to Stanstead Airport in mum’s car, which doesn’t seem to go faster than 30 mph, with no make-up and two hours sleep (a mixture of excitement and getting up at the crack of dawn), the only thing that seemed appealing to me at 4am was a stiff drink. Being seen with alcohol at that time in the morning (unless at an after party) is sooo not a good look, so I settled for a bottle of chilled Perrier as it seemed a safer option. I managed to ignore the slightly queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach as all that could occupy my thoughts was looking forward to six days of fun with my girlies in the beautiful sunshine. Destination: Puerto Banus. I don’t know whether it was good genes or that our group had rubbed off on each other but for once we were very well organised. What with our matching travel pouches, LV’s and Perrier, we’d even arrived at the airport two-and-a-half hours before our flight. I had a really good feeling about this girly holiday. As the slight ‘mum’s car travel nausea’* subsided, I felt completely relaxed as we’d had a slumber party the night before. The girls and I had exchanged funny stories, rubbed in fake tan (before this I was a fake tan virgin) and put on some sauna face packs. We made our way to check in with our suitcases loaded with enough clothing for four weeks (collectively enough for a small army!), I reached for my cute new pink travel pouch ready to show my old embarrassing passport picture that seems to follow you around for, like, forever. Uh oh… Pink travel pouch, equipped with passport, Euros and debit card was nowhere to be seen. After rummaging through my hand luggage, neatly packed suitcase and a fruitless visit to lost property, I admitted defeat and called mum. The phone was answered after about 10 attempts, which translates as mum had just found somewhere to pull over and answer (I’m guessing hands free kits are evil, just like all other newish gadgets) and it was it was in the side of the passenger door… Great! Luckily mum was only 20 minutes

30

www.esp3.net (July ) w w w.

dontscrapthetap . c o m

away… unluckily a 20 minute journey at 30mph takes forever! Not wanting the girls to have to wait for me, I told them that I’d meet them on the other side whilst I waited for my elusive passport to return (thank you mother dear!). It was at this point that I noticed, to my horror, that one of my legs looked a lot darker than the other. Cue a Jessica Simpson moment: ‘Mmm, that’s strange, surely the fake tan would work at the same speed?!’ I thought to myself. I then recall that the first-time-fake-tan application had been interrupted midway by a kitchen disaster. Could this non-start girly holiday get any worse? Six hours later, after hot footing it through the security gates and with my nerves in tatters** after a flight sat next to someone petrified of flying, we were finally there! Not usually the biggest fan of sun bathing, instead, generally opting for socialising and giggles, I had to take three days of pure sun lounging just to recover (Me…Melodramatic? Never!). Well the holiday was well worth the boot camp and the drama, as I think it’d be fair to make an off-the-cuff casual comment in saying – IT WAS THE BEST GIRLY HOLIDAY EVERRRRRR! What with managing to blag our way on to a lovely (nameless) gentleman’s yacht, gorgeous weather, loads of miniature Moet bottles, cocktails and loads of laughter, AND after rectifying my fake tan disaster (!), I almost forgot the travel traumas. Isn’t it just typical that six days on holiday can go so quickly but the six days in the run up to holiday go so slowly! Trust me... on my next holiday, with Kerry (current Face of ESP) in a few weeks, I’ll make sure I quadruple check my passport‘s with me, won’t apply fake tan and then I should be on to a winner! Susan’s disclaimer * Mum, you’re a great driver really and as you’ve taught me well, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Please don’t get a complex, I’m just suggesting that maybe we can attempt 35 mph next time. He! He! ** I mean don’t get me wrong, I really don’t have a problem flying, however after three hours of sitting next to someone who hears noises and sees things, (that no one else can hear or see), I was beginning to wonder!

Caught in the ac ESP PAPARAZZI

The ESP Big Quiz goes down a storm… TSo here they are in all their glory – just some of the contenders in the ESP Big Quiz held recently at The Brewery Tap. This was the third time we had held our Big Quiz, and once again it raised hundreds of pounds (around £500 in fact) for Sue Ryder Care Thorpe Hall Hospice, so thanks to everyone for joining in the fun. Our lens man Pep Cipriano had defected to the Lite FM team (he knows the ESP team are always rubbish!) but was still on Paparazzi duties in between the questions. Dozens of teams including local businesses like Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, The East of England Show and loads of quizzers who’d just gathered together their mates joined the night which was another huge success. The guys at The Brewery Tap gave a generous discount on their lovely Thai nosh and the range of real ales obviously impaired some people’s answers! At the end of the night when quiz master Ian Gray had addled everyone’s brains (or was that more beer…?) and the many raffle prizes were dished out, the ultimate winners were the Rusholme Ruffians (they’re fans of The Smiths!). After three years of trying they finally beat their arch rivals The Fen Boy Three into second place and legged it with armfuls of prizes and a big grin on their faces! Our thanks to Peterborough Greyhound Stadium and The Cherry Tree pub for sponsoring the night.

ESPCELEBS When it comes to concerts she’s definitely ‘The One’ to see this month. Kylie Minogue talks tours, costumes and Dr Who!

The tour has taken Kylie through most of Europe with her first ever performances in Greece, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Luxembourg, Russia, Latvia and Spain. ‘KylieX2008’ also sees her perform with a brand new live band including, for the first time, a brass section and a total of 14 dancers, including four acrobats. “As it is the ‘X20008’ tour, I am singing quite a few songs from the album; however I have added some very personal songs to the show which were an important part of the album recording process but were not released on ‘X’. Not only have these not been performed live before, fans have not heard them, so I hope this will give some insight into other songs I like. Of course there are some old favourites for those who haven’t seen one of my shows before.” For the songs, Kylie’s drawn on a breadth of material spread over her career but also promises some unheard songs and at least one surprising cover. “It’s been very interesting to hear how the new songs translate live,” she says. “A song like ‘2 Hearts’ is practically tailor made for live performance as you can hear all the instruments, it’s simple and everyone loves to sing it. The electronic tracks like ‘Nu-di-ty’ and ‘Speakerphone’ were more of a challenge but I think they’re working really well.” Kylie’s wardrobe for this tour has been exclusively designed by master couturier Jean Paul Gaultier and the show will feature at least seven costumes just for Kylie and she’s

34

delighted with her designer dressing up box. “I still get so excited about fashion design and about the incredible world of couture in particular. Jean Paul has created some of the most iconic looks in fashion but seems to have the same enthusiasm as when I first met him n the early ‘90’s. I’ve been lucky enough to work with amazing designers on different tours and they need to have an understanding of what is required of a working wardrobe.” After her successful battle with breast cancer, relationship splits and a seemingly relentless schedule, living in Kylie world clearly isn’t always a fairy tale. Even a superstar needs a little ‘me time’ surely? “Most of what I do requires a lot of energy but the adrenalin and sense of satisfaction comes back to me so it doesn’t feel so much like hard work. However, when I do need rest, especially after a lot of travel, one of the best remedies is just to stay in. Boring I know, but sometimes it has to be done. If it’s not sleep I need but a break from work, I love to have dinner and catch up with friends. It’s such a pleasure to be able to laugh, relax and confide in those who mean a lot to me.” After all she’s been through she’s certainly an inspiration and with the Kylie empire stretching from recording to touring, perfume to bed linen what now lies in store? “After filming the Christmas episode of Doctor Who, I’m really keen to do more acting,” she says. “In a way it was like going back to my roots and perhaps the time has come to delve into that world again in the not too distant future!” Kylie’s new single ‘The One’ is released on July 28. www.kylie.com www.kyliekonnect.com

Playing to well over half a million people, the ‘KylieX2008’ tour is the star’s biggest ever and has cost over £10 million to stage! It kicked off in Paris in May and this month she arrives here at last with dates in Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle and London.

IT COULD BE YOU! Yes, you could be the one to fill Kerry Bates’ high heels and change your life… but only if you give it a try. We’ve begun the hunt for the girl who’ll become our next Face of ESP and we’re looking for a girl with a great personality who takes care of her looks and can be an ambassador for the magazine. We will make you a ‘face’ about town and give you the celebrity treatment for a whole year.

“The next instalment was my cover shoot where I was thrown in at the deep end as I’d never done any modelling before in my life. This is something which ESP has taught me how to do.

Less than a year ago Kerry was a waitress in Stamford harbouring a dream of becoming a TV presenter for Blue Peter. She might not be on the box just yet, but she’s well on her way! “When I entered I never thought I would win as I thought it was more of a beauty pageant. On the final night when I arrived I saw all the beautiful girls and honestly did not think I would win. It was only during the night that I realised it wasn’t just about how good you looked, it was about being able to talk to a wide variety of people with ease. “As soon as I won, the whirlwind began, I was taken through to another room, had make-up applied and had so many photos taken of myself with the biggest bouquet of flowers you could ever imagine!

“Since winning the Face of ESP I’ve become more confident within myself. I’ve always been a fairly confident person but through going to the numerous events I have been to, I have really developed. I’ve always wanted to do a sky dive and due to ESP I did one this year. Everything I have done I have loved. “I think all those girls who are unsure about entering as they may feel they’re not what ESP are looking for, could be so wrong. All you need to ask yourself is 'what have I got to lose'? After all, it’s an excuse to dress up in a pretty dress and go out for a fabulous night!” Kerry still has lots more to achieve… who knows, next time it could be you!

WIN over £5,000 in prizes Win over £5,000 in prizes – enter now www.esp3.net/face or pick up an entry form from our sponsors. Call 01733 579707 for details. You must be 18 years-old by the time of the Finals Night on Friday September 19 at the Marriott Hotel, and be available to attend events and photoshoots for the full 12 months.

Ristorante I Toscanini refers to their father (it translates as the young Tuscan) and follows his example of hardworking family business ethics he established when he first arrived in Peterborough in 1954. He was the first to open an Italian shop in the city and was also the Italian Vice Consulate of Peterborough. He hailed from Tuscany, the gastronomic region of Italy, famed for its fine cuisine.

While family connections can make a business stronger, it’s not always easy and they know it’ll take team work so have taken advice form their good friend Posh striker Aaron McLean and his counterpart Craig MackailSmith. Their partnership up front has helped Peterborough United gain promotion so these guys know a thing or two about working side by side.

“We’re both unselfish; we’re both team players and work hard for each other,” says Aaron. “It’s 50/50 – you’re both equal in any success and help each other when things aren’t going so well. That’s what Paolo and Rosanna will have to keep in mind.” Craig agrees – “It’s about compromise and putting the effort in. You need to be able to connect personally and professionally. I connect with Aaron outside of football, that’s why we do so well on the pitch. If you don’t get on as a partnership outside, you won’t do in business.”

“Mum’s was the best lasagne and that’s what we serve here,” says Paolo. “They’re delicate dishes, not heavy, and we believe in quality not quantity.” “Paolo is such a showman,” adds Rosanna, “I hadn’t really seen him work before but when I saw him out in the restaurant he has such enthusiasm for what he’s doing, he encourages people to try and taste – it really reminded me of our father in the shop. “We plan to experiment a little more and to refresh the menu every couple of months. We use the finest ingredients and never compromise on the produce. Our Parmesan for example is the real thing.” Brother and sister act - Paolo and Rossana the perfect partnership

There can’t be many local restaurants where the bosses head out in the middle of the night to drive to Billingsgate market! Clearly committed to bringing us the finest food they can, this brother

and sister team should take the restaurant to a new level. “This is a way of life for us,” says Rossana, “it’s become my second home and really is a family affair now.”

Both the guys are fans of the food and the restaurant so you’ll often find them dropping in for pasta whenever their schedule allows. “It’s very friendly, the food is unbelievable, top class and it’s such a beautiful restaurant,” says Aaron. Paolo’s old passion for his restaurant and its wonderfully authentic Tuscan dishes clearly hasn’t waned and it definitely runs in the family. Brought up on the finest Tuscan foods from birth, their father didn’t ‘eat to live, but lived to eat’.

entertainment for the little ones with storytelling and face-painting.

Supported by

It’s back for a second year, and once again ESP is pleased to support the Randall Rootz Festival Mk2. If you’re going to a festival this year, make sure you include this one… The long awaited line-up for this years Randall Rootz Festival in Peterborough has just been announced. The inaugural event in 2007 was hailed a huge success, with a sellout opening night, when members of the world-famous Punk/Folk band The Pogues, took centre stage. The Mk2 event will once again open up at The Brewery Tap in Westgate, Peterborough on Friday August 15 with Legend, a fantastic Bob Marley & The Wailers tribute band. Hailed as possibly the best Bob Marley tribute in the UK, Legend is led by the

charismatic Michael Anton Philips and promises a full two hour set of Marley’s greatest hits and more. Along with other members of this eight-piece dynamic band, many of these amazing musicians have worked with such Reggae greats as George and Desmond Decker, The Mighty Diamonds, Rankin Roger and Burning Spear, not to mention The Beat, Apache Indian and Musical Youth. Support on the night comes from soul/funksters Groove Cartel. The second day of the festival moves outside to Charters’ garden on The Town Bridge in Peterborough and offers a full 12+ hours of free, family-friendly entertainment that’s open to all. A jam-packed line-up from midday on Saturday August 16 includes music from The Dead Rabbits (Pogues tribute), Richard Hall Band (Indie/Folk/Pop), Bhangra Drums (ethnic beats), Sam Beer (acoustic/Folk), Tres Cojones (Flamenco/Jazz), Strawbear (Indie/Rock), Derrin Nauendorf (acoustic/Blues) and Rebellation (Ska/Reggae). The evening events inside will include The Houndogs (Rockabilly/Pop) and Psych-O-Bombs (60's Garage). “If last years event is anything to go by, tickets for Friday will sell out pretty quickly,” said festival spokesman and ESP columnist Andrew Whittaker, “plus we will be expecting a couple of thousand people to attend during Saturday’s free festival, so we’ve made contingencies for an allweather event.” The Saturday event at Charters will also include many festival stalls and will provide

The festival wraps up on Sunday August 17 when multi-talented Cambridgeshire guitarist, Ezio, performs a rare acoustic set and it’s something not to be missed. For those budding musicians out there, the afternoon will also include an open mic session, as well as other performances during the afternoon from the likes of Matt Zilch and Miss Lisa Ambrose. The Randall Rootz Festival has been organised in memory of talented city percussionist Mark Randall, who died from cancer in February 2007 aged just 34. Mark was a well-known face on Peterborough's music scene, playing in numerous bands and constantly promoting live music and bringing new talent to the city. This year’s event will continue to raise awareness for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall, where Mark was cared for in his final weeks. At last year's inaugural Randall Rootz Festival, over £4000 in proceeds went to the charity and donations will again be collected for the hospice over the three day event. Tickets to see ‘Legend: Bob Marley & The Wailers tribute band’ cost just £10 in advance and are available by credit card from The Brewery Tap 01733 358500 or in person from Charters Bar. You can also reserve tickets through Andrew Whittaker on 07860 770005. The Saturday and Sunday events are free. www.randallrootz.org

As Drive Time presenter on Lite FM and fan of everything four wheeled, DJ Gary Ball steps in as this month’s guest reviewer for ESP Wheels. Will the Toyota Auris SR be sporty enough…?

The first thing that struck me about the car was the shape and how stylish and sporty it was. The back and side windows were tinted, there was a back spoiler and the tyres were thick and wide on alloy wheels. The lights both back and front are another attractive feature of this car as they are very big and wrap themselves around the sides of the car’s bodywork. At a glance, you immediately know that this is a car that you would want to be seen in, but then you start to think of its practicality. Would it be practical for a family? Would there be enough space in the boot for shopping and all those things that kids always insist on taking, even on a short trip. Incredibly, when you look inside, you aren’t disappointed. The boot space has ample room and the back seats all fold down should you need extra room without the kids in the car. The space in the back is also very good with lots of leg room and the upholstered seats are very comfortable. The car is fitted with all the things that we have come to expect from quality cars like air bags, air con and a CD player but the Toyota Auris SR has more, as the inside of this model is

w w w.

as attractive the car as is on the outside. The dials and gauges illuminate in a soft orange colour in daylight. They’re clear and easy to read and with a press of a button it will display everything from fuel consumption to the date and time. The centre console sits up and the gear lever is set central and at a similar height to the bottom of the steering wheel, giving you the feeling that you’re more in control. The drive is very smooth and the benefit of this diesel engine with six gears, is that driving at a steady 65mph, the Toyota Auris was doing 62.3mpg and with the current climate of rising fuel prices this feature is one of the first things we look at in a car. It’s a car that I would love to own and I would recommend to anyone looking to buy a reasonably priced economical car that both looks good and does everything that you ask of it, to take and look at the Toyota Auris first.

COME ON GIRLS WHAT DO WE ALWAYS SAY… THE BIGGER THE BETTER? Well it certainly is with the new 308 SW even though it’s big it certainly has style. From the full length panoramic cielo roof and wrap around rear windscreen, to the curved dashboard with soft touch dials it looks like the interior’s come straight from a very expensive coupe. Whether you have a big family or just lots of friends, this car is ideal as it has five full size seats in the back and still you have plenty of boot space when they’re fully occupied, or you can go for option B and use the space for skis, surf boards or like me – bikes! All the seats from the middle row back can be taken out completely too so those trips to Ikea can be

cheaper now with no extra cost for delivery! I wanted to make the most of this test drive so headed out to The Queen’s Head restaurant in Nassington for a spin and admired it over an orange juice in their gorgeous beer garden – well it would’ve been rude not to! I can tell you the Peugeot SW drives like a dream and you have all the style you could wish for starting at only £14,395 on the road. I’d like to say a big thank you to Shaun at Marshal Peugeot Peterborough for the loan of the car, give him a ring and take it out for a 24 hour test drive yourself - you’ll love it.

BUYING SECOND HAND DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN USED AND ABUSED – IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD YOUR DREAM WHEELS JUST YET, YOU CAN STILL BUY A DECENT USED CAR, YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW WHERE TO LOOK… Buying your next car can be a tad nerve wracking. It’s always better to buy a used car which has a warranty and has been properly checked out so you can have real peace of mind that you’re not being sold down the river. After all, once you’ve got your wheels you just want to enjoy hitting the open road, not end up chatting to the AA man in a lay-by! The more authorised checks and assurances a used car centre can give you the better, so make sure they can provide a full vehicle history and prove safety checks are valid. You need somewhere with a good reputation where you can trust the advice and guidance you’re given. I dropped into Marshall Auto Directions to see what they provide. This is part of the Marshall group and the team there are about to celebrate the company’s 1st birthday in August. Stuart Magee the Sales Manager told me that they’ve sold around 400 cars in their first year of trading which is good going for the market at the moment. For those who don’t know about this side of the Marshall’s group, this is the used car centre where the cars mostly come from all the other

Marshall garages as part exchange and are then sold on with full service, valeting and Marshall warranty. Prices range from around £3,000 to £10,000 and they have a turnover change every two months. “Our vehicles are all thoroughly checked,” Stuart told me, “they have up to three years warranty and we even offer a ten day exchange pledge in case you change your mind. You don’t need to worry about haggling either. We give a genuine value and also guarantee to buy your car, even if you don’t buy from us.” If you’re looking for a different car but can’t quite afford that new one of your dreams then maybe the guys at Auto Directions can help. Just give Stuart and his team a ring on 01733 213163.

WE’RE GOING TO THE DOGS

Dog suits at the ready it’s time for the human hounds to hit the track. We’re going to the dogs and we want you to join us as we back the Human Greyhound Racing event this month in aid of Sue Ryder Care…

We love a laugh and a quirky event – and they don’t come much madder than this one! These nights really take the biscuit, as entrants in dog outfits race around the Peterborough Greyhound Stadium track to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice. Last year they raised over £6,000 with sponsorship and bets on the human pooches so make sure you’re there for the launch night with ESP on July 22. The entrants don their furry outfits and then leg it half way round the track at the end of the

normal greyhound races around 10.30pm. You’ll be able to bet on them as normal so whether you fancy the spotty dog, the hairy hound or the muddy mutt at the back you’ll be raising dosh for a worthwhile local charity. If you want to take part it’s a scream and you get some free drinks and food for doing it, but if you just want to support someone who’s daft enough to give it a go, get a group together and enjoy a fantastic night at the dogs with ESP. Royal Mail, The BNI chapters

and Specsavers have already signed up. Heats are being held throughout July and August and we’ll be there on the finals night too, so you might even find yourself in ESP. For all the info you need call Emma Long at Thorpe Hall on 01733 330060 or send her an email at emma.long@suerydercare.org. They’re also offering corporate sponsorship from £50, so you can do your bit for charity as well as getting exposure.

SCENE

Want to know what’s hot on the big and small screen? ESP’s

KUNG FU PANDA Out: Jul 4

Of all the animals in the Valley of Peace, the panda named Po (Jack Black) seems the least likely candidate for the title of ‘Dragon Warrior’; a superior martial artist and guardian of his people. Po is fat, clumsy and gets out of breath before reaching the top of the stairs to the temple grounds. Why he was chosen baffles the already seasoned fighters that populate the valley, but as it stands Po must get fighting fit, and fast; the evil snow leopard Tai Lung has escaped from prison and seeks to have his revenge on those that put him there, and lay claim to the Dragon Scroll, apparently a source of great power.

WALL-E Out: Jul 18

There are very few characters in WALL-E. To begin with, there is only one; the Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class, or WALL-E for short. He is the last robot on Earth, left behind to clean-up the mess left behind by the humans that have fled to space. Over time he has developed a personality, and has feelings. For the most part, he just feels lonely. When another robot named EVE crash lands on the barren planet to join him, he falls head-over-wheels in love, but doesn’t know how to speak to her cold metal heart. Perhaps it would help if he could speak with real words, but very few are spoken in the entire movie. The little robot will have to find ways to express himself to the audience if this rather brave film is to be a success.

THE DARK KNIGHT Out: Jul 25

GAME ON WE LOVE GOLF

(Wii) Out: Jul 4 Golf might not sound like the most interesting sport to turn into a videogame, but developers Camelot proved it could be good fun when they made the Mario Golf games for the N64 and Gamecube. Now with their latest game they’ve teamed up with Capcom, so expect plenty of cameos from classic Street Fighter and Resident Evil characters. There will also be extras not seen in the original Japanese release, including a full online mode.

Restarting the Batman series from scratch proved to be an extremely wise move as Batman Begins was massively popular with both ticket buyers and critics alike, and it stands as one of the most respected superhero movies of recent years. Well, this chapter in the caped crusader’s tale should be even greater, as it features the arrival of Batman’s greatest nemesis, The Joker. Sadly though, it also features the final role completed by actor Heath Ledger, who tragically died aged 28 earlier this year.

SPACE INVADERS EXTREME

(DS) Out: Jul 4 Space Invaders is one of the few games that is more likely to have been played by your grandparents than yourself, and when they say “you can’t beat them old Space Invaders,” they’re right; at least when concerning this series. There have been countless remakes, sequels and spin-offs, but none have really improved on the original, and often fail to capture the magic of its glory days. So what makes Space Invaders Extreme special? It fuses the look and feel of old with a style and sound that makes it seem brand new. There are tons of imaginative new ideas thrown in too, none of which get in the way of the simplicity that made Space Invaders such an addictive classic in the first place.

dontscrapthetap . c o m

GUITAR HERO: ON TOUR

(DS) Out: Jul 18 Combining the addictive gameplay of Guitar Hero with the portability of the DS is a stroke (or should that be strum) of genius; now you can rock on the road, though headphones are advisable if you don’t want to incur the wrath of your fellow bus passengers. Of course, a full size plastic replica guitar won’t fit in your pocket, so bundled with the game is a set of fret buttons that plug into the bottom of your DS, while you strum on the touch-screen with the stylus (or a plectrum if you want).

DVD SCENE

Tony Stephens has the answer…

THERE WILL BE BLOOD

Out: Jul 7 Nothing will stand in the way of Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his quest for money through oil. He loves money and oil more than friends, family or any human being for that matter, including himself. He starts his journey alone, and he shuns those that get close to him, unless he can use them to turn a profit. By the end, for all the riches in the world, he will surely still be lonely.

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES

You’re more than just a number to

us!

Out: Jul 14 Based on a popular series of children’s books, the movie follows a small group of children who discover that there is a magical element to their world, full of faeries and goblins; they just couldn’t see it before. It doesn’t take long before some sort of foul creature with evil intentions pursues them; an ogre named Mulgarath (Nick Nolte). Great for kids, and bearable for parents, too.

10,000 BC

Out: Jul 21 What can you expect from the latest movie directed by Roland Emmerich? A big, BIG special effects spectacle, perhaps? You got it. No prizes. Sorry. Taking a sort of sword ‘n’ sandals adventure and throwing woolly mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers into the action makes for lots of dumb fun. A young hunter’s lover is kidnapped from his village, and we follow him as he forms a merry band of warriors to do battle with their oppressors and hopefully get her back. So basically it’s Braveheart starring Barney Rubble.

COLUMN

Andy

Slater andy.slater@espmag.co.uk

It’s July, the sun is beating down and scantily clad waifs are wandering around festival fields reliving the ‘summer of love’, San Francisco style. That’s the trouble with being a columnist on a monthly mag, you have to predict the weather and as we’re talking British weather, I’ve probably got it hopelessly wrong! However one thing’s for sure we’re in full festival season. Up and down the country thousands of people are pitching tents in muddy fields and having a whale of a time. My fellow columnist Andy Whittaker’s regally informed you of the Randall Rootz and Stamford Riverside festivals which are planned for August and July, but one that snook under his radar is the City Roots Festival which is planned for the weekend of August 2-3 at the Embankment. Organised by the council and Muddy Promotions team the weekend promises three stages of great music and the Earth dome dance tent with all sorts of blips and whups to get you moving. Headlining are Indie rockers The Foxes and Hip Hop Funk band Lazy Habits who’ll be supported by the best of the local talent including Opaque, Acer, Point Seven Pistol, James Chadwick, Irene Rae, Julian Stone and the remarkably named Tres Cojones (look it up). There’s also a comedy cum poetry stage if that’s your bag, along with funfairs, festy stalls, food stalls and the all important

licensed bar! Tickets for the weekend, which you can camp at, are a threadbare £10 or £6.50 for the day and are available from the Key Theatre on 01733 552439 or via their website www.cityroots.co.uk You can also look at the organiser’s website www.muddypromotions.org.uk and get details of the Grassroots Festival they have planned for September, more on that next month.

organised and the folks that chip up there are really friendly, I did make a big mistake last time I went though. Well I thought if I get a bit tiddly in the bar I may struggle to find my VW so… I put a confederate flag up the mast so to speak and went to the bar. When I got back to the campsite much later there were bloody hundreds of them fluttering in the breeze! This year I’ll be raising the Duff beer flag…Check out www.americana-international.co.uk for ticket prices and a full line-up, it really is a great weekend. My shenanigans at festivals have been well controlled so far this summer you may be pleased to hear, nothing too embarrassing has occurred. We had a great time at a couple of festys in Leicester - The Blues Festival and The Big Session, both run by the city council.

So what to look out for this month further afield…well a bit different, but a great weekend is Americana International at Newark Showground on July 10-13. As the name suggests it’s everything American. It’s worth going if only to see the cars and bikes. Row upon row of gleaming Cadillac chrome and Pontiac paint jobs from the 50’s,60’s and 70’s when yank tanks were truly a work of art, you also get three days of music from modern contemporary Country to Rockabilly, Swing and good old time Hillbilly hell. You have names like Asleep at the Wheel, Texan Grammy winning country swingsters, alongside 70’s chart heroes The Darts, The Manfreds, Limehouse Lizzy and a personal favourite of mine - Wayne Hancock. Having been before, it’s a great mix of music cars and nostalgia. It’s well

dontscrapthetap . c o m

The Blues gig had great performances by Gary Moore and The Hamsters but my personal faves were The Black Diamond Heavies and Scott H Biram - two sets that will take some beating this year. The Big Session’s top bill was Steve Earle and he lived up to it… stood there with a mic and an acoustic guitar, this great big bear of a man invites on stage a DJ to start scratchin’ along to his songs - innovation and coolness personified! Both gigs were extremely well organised, the volunteers and crew were uber friendly and the whole experience left me with a far more positive feel to Leicester as a city. Well done guys. It would be great if the City Roots Festival that our council and the Muddy guys are organising has the same effect on people from out of our town, I’m sure it will. It just goes to show that if you promote your city positively that is how it is perceived… bring it on guys.

LIVEMUSIC

STAMFORD RIVERSIDE FESTIVAL

ESP’s Andy Whittaker has the news from the local live scene…

The usual high quality line-up of music and family entertainment is expected at this year’s Stamford Riverside Festival on Saturday July 5, which takes place on The Meadows site in the town centre from 1pm. Each of the four stages this year promise great music and sets Riverside’s reputation as one of the region’s best free-music events – one which ESP Magazine Supported by is pleased to support. Headlining on the Riverside Stage this year are Gabbidon… a ten-piece outfit from Birmingham containing members of the legendary Steel Pulse. Keeping to what promises to be a high-tempo Reggae/Ska themed day, The Gangsters and The Undercover Police will also be taking to the main stage. Local bands and artists such as The Dead Rabbits, Opaque, James Chadwick and Kat Flint will be performing on the Boomerang Stage, alongside London based Kit Holmes; currently receiving airplay on Radio 2 and getting some great music press coverage. Definitely worth seeing! If you prefer your festivals a little more noisy and have the appropriate facial piercings to boot, the Marquee Stage is the place to be. Current NME hotties, International Trust headline, while other bands include The More I See, Piledriver, Chokehold, Wasted, Vendetta and March to the Grave. The Busker Tent is also there for anyone who fancies having a go at emulating those on stage elsewhere. To ensure the festival remains a truly family event, bringing alcohol onto the site will not be allowed this year and bag searches will be in operation to ensure bottles of Mad Dog are not smuggled in by overexcited teens. However, the fully licensed festival bar has been extended to 200ft to cope with the extra demand of legal alcohol consumption and the usual array of world-foods and family entertainment is also lined-up. Although still a ‘free’ festival, the organisers are adopting a voluntary donation scheme to help secure the future growth and security of Riverside. Suggested donations are £2 for adults and £1 for those aged 10 to 17… great value! www.riversidefestival.co.uk

ACOUSTIC HEAVEN

VOCALIST REQUIRED

After playing to over 2000 people at Bourne Festival, locally based rock outfit, White Spirit have just announce the departure of Nick their vocalist, who’s taking a break from live performance. So… there’s a vacancy! “We’re not looking for a Nick clone,” says drummer Steve Vandes, “but see this as an opportunity to rehearse some new material to suit a new vocal.” If you’ve got a great voice, a big personality and a passion for classic rock music, then give Steve a call on 07900 558672 to find out the audition dates during July, with a view to hitting the stage with live performances from September. www.whitespiritrocks.com

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL IN BOURNE

Tickets are just £8 in advance, £10 on the door, or available from Simon on 0782 803 2241. www.myspace.com/porkyandthepinups

GIRLS TRY OUT FOR HOCKEY PLACES

We can hardly wait to see Posh back in action on the pitch and there’s not long to go footie fans. The 2008-2009 Coca-Cola League One fixture list has been released and Peterborough United will start their campaign away at Southend United on Saturday August 9 before a Tuesday night trip to Bristol City in the first round of the Carling Cup. Manager Darren Ferguson believes the clash at Ashton Gate will be a tough one and told ESP – “We had Championship teams last season and we certainly didn’t disgrace ourselves. We beat Southampton in round one and I felt we were unlucky against West Bromwich Albion in the second round. Gary Johnson has done a great job with a side that really get the ball down and play. “It’s going to be a tough one and it’s one that I wouldn’t have picked but you have got to get on and do it, and on our day we can give anyone a game, we showed that last season, so we can only look forward to the game.”

MARS REFUEL FUND HELPS YOUR TEAM TO WORK. REST. PLAY LONGER

Market Deeping Hockey Club’s ladies section have set the date for their club trials and female players of all skill and experience levels are invited to simply turn up on the day. They’ll be held at Deeping’s Leisure Centre Astroturf on July 19, 10.30am ‘til 12.30pm with snacks and drinks at the Rose at Frognall afterwards, where you can get to know everyone. There’s a £2 charge to cover pitch hire and food. WANTED: ICE HOCKEY GIRLS… AND SPONSORS!

Photo: nenedigital.co.uk

Peterborough Penguins Women’s Ice Hockey Club are on the look out for new members for the Under 16’s team, the Peterborough Pingus. Ladies flock (sorry!) to their training sessions at Bretton Ice Rink, and they’ve decided to extend the fun to Under 16’s. It’s a fun way to get fit - and doesn’t involve little glittery dresses like figure skating does! They train every Wednesday from 6.30pm, the first session’s free and people of all abilities are encouraged to come along, so why not give it a shot? For more information, visit www.ppenguins.co.uk. They’re also looking for sponsors for the Ladies team for next season so if you fancy giving them your support and getting your company name splashed across these ladies’ chests, be sure to get in touch.

You don’t just have to be part of a team to benefit. The fund will also give support to individuals raising money for charity through sporting activities, such as bike rides, mountain climbing and parachute jumps. Applications can be made online at www.marsrefuel.com and you must be 12 years or over and only one application will be accepted per person, club or organisation. So get online, get training, and maybe you could end up at the London Olympics!

MARSHALL DODGE SPONSORS OF THE PETERBOROUGH SAXONS

SAXONS STAR ON TRACK AND FIELD The Peterborough Saxons went along to Truckfest recently in support of their 2008 sponsor, Marshall Dodge Peterborough. Whilst there, the guys were introduced to local racing star James Gornall who, coincidentally races a Dodge Viper in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship. They all got on so well that James invited The Saxons to his next race meet, held at the Rockingham race track in Corby, but little did The Saxons know that the organisers had a little more than sitting and watching in mind. When word spread that there would be American Footballers in attendance, The Saxons suddenly found themselves a crucial part of the day’s pre race promotions, paraded up and down the track in front of almost 20,000 race fans. Once the press got wind of the boys in blue, the string of professional models couldn’t get a look in as Tight End Ian Fryer told ESP - “It was an amazing experience, we were free to walk around the pits and were treated like celebrities, I’ve never had so many cameras pointed at me, and the chance to go on the grid was something I never thought I’d do.”

It wasn’t just stills cameras pointed at The Saxons however, as Channel 4 were also intrigued by the players dressed head to toe in full game day uniform. Darren Griffiths Linebacker for The Saxons couldn’t believe their luck - “They were filming for their June highlights show, and asked us if we had a chant we could perform to use on their broadcast. When we heard our cue ‘Can anyone top the American Muscle’ we replied – ‘United we stand, divided we fall…we are TEAM SAXONS!’ This was followed by the roar of the engines and cheers from the crowd, it was such a buzz.” The Saxons were honorary members of the Pit Crew staying in the thick of the action throughout the race and soaking up all the atmosphere of high octane motor racing as James Gornall managed a respectable finish following an earlier setback and relished every moment of

their time in the limelight. US National Brian Williams, stationed at RAF Alconbury, who as well as playing, also coaches The Saxons defensive players, told ESP - “Some experiences are once in a lifetime and this will last long in the memory for everyone at The Saxons, and we were proud to represent the city of Peterborough at such a high profile event. These are the sort of things that put us both on the map.” Fullback Ricky Benson added - “It was an incredible experience for me and the team, I can’t describe the buzz I got from being around all those supercars at trackside, it was like something out of The Fast and The Furious! On behalf of everyone, I’d like to thank Alan at Marshalls, James and his father Ian and everybody at Team Trimite for helping make this possible.” It’s been a busy month for The Saxons who’ve played four home games in Stanground back to back, winning three and losing one, scoring over 200 points, and conceding just thirty so far this season. In July the guys head to Watford for a rematch with the Cheetahs, and face a grueling road trip for their first ever meeting with the Plymouth Admirals. With hopes of a play off place still very much alive The Saxons will be looking for back to back wins, but it’s not just the adults in action; the youth squad for players aged 16 – 18 are also playing games throughout July boosted by a recent £10,000 lottery grant achieved through the Awards for All scheme. There’s never been a better time to become a part of TEAM Saxons, so for more information, check out the website www.thesaxons.co.uk or email info@thesaxons.co.uk Mark Kerr
