The Davison-Woods band return to their old haunt the Crown Inn on Lincoln Road on June 10 as they kick off the pub’s beer festival. They were hugely popular there back in the late 70s and early 80s and Mick Davison had such a great nostalgic night when Frankly My Dear played there recently that he wanted to do it all again with his old band mate Les Woods. As Mick and Les only play together now and again here’s hoping it's a good night and plenty of friends and the old crowd who used to get down there turn up!

POP GOES GREEN FESTIVAL SHOP! The city’s first Pop Up shop will be opened as part of the Green Festival in Peterborough which launches on May 28 and continues through until June 12. The former Millets store on Bridge Street will be reopened for two weeks and filled by local artists, poets, performers and crafts people. It's the first time this kind of temporary shop arrangement has been seen in the city centre and organisers hope that if it's successful, more empty shops could be taken over in the future to allow creative groups space to be seen. It’s all thanks to Eastern Angles Theatre Company and Blok Collective who organise the Overground Arts Jam, Opportunity Peterborough and Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT). It's hoped that free or nearly free workshops will give children and adults a chance to try something new, or learn more with everything from knitting, poetry, creative thinking, and art sessions through to social media use for creatives themselves who want to be seen online. Space is also being given to Handmade In Peterborough, a network of craftspeople within the city who are offering anyone who makes things a chance to get their items into a retail shop.

No previous experience is necessary and all boats and equipment are provided so pull a team together and get ready to race the dragon! Loads of local companies have already entered, such as BBC Radio Cambridgeshire whose Peterborough Breakfast Show presenter Paul Stainton will be taking part along with his team, likely to include a few burly oarsmen to improve on last year’s results no doubt! Money raised will go towards the East Anglia Children’s Hospices, so it’s all for a good cause and a really good laugh… especially when a few people get wet! SPEEDWAY ACTION Peterborough are backing new skipper Nicki Pedersen to lead the side into the play-offs. And the Readypower Panthers believe their stuttering start to the new season will ensure they peak at the right time. The city side are in the lower reaches of the Elite League but that’s only because they were hit by a string of postponements which has left them lagging way behind their nine rivals. Team boss Trevor Swales said: “The league table gives a totally false impression but normally riders benefit from racing often. We end May having had only seven
matches – most of the other teams will have had at least double that so there’s a lot of catching up to do.” The lack of early season home matches has been a particular handicap for new signings Linus Sundström, 20, and Kacper Gomolski, 18. But they’ve settled in superbly and both have become big crowd favourites already with Polish teenager Gomolski wowing fans with his extravagant victory wheelies every time he’s won a race. Catch them in action on Thursday May 26 v Birmingham, 7.30pm, Monday May 30 v King’s Lynn, 4.30pm, Monday June 13 v Birmingham, 7.30pm and on Monday July 4 v Poole. www.peterboroughpanthers.co

Ladies of Peterborough this is a rallying call for you all to show what us girls are made of and to step it out for Cancer Research. We don’t need athletes we just need girls with a pair of trainers who can walk, jog or run the 5km course in this year’s Race For Life. Numbers are down which is seriously bad news for the charity and we aim to do something about it! After completing the Midnight Walk last month our Face of ESP Lauren Hughes is now slipping her trainers back on to take part in Race For Life in Peterborough. The Stamford event was a huge success at Burghley Park as you can see in this month’s Stamford Calling on page 22 of this issue, but now it’s time for the Boro girls to make their mark!
ESP’s own Wickedly Perceptive columnist Sarah Tempest is a big supporter and says it’s a life changing event – “I've been a passionate supporter of Race for Life since I ran my first one in 1999. I loved it so much that I became a commentator and have now presented around 50 Race for Life events around the country. I'd like to wish Lauren and everyone else taking part a huge amount of luck and hope you have a fabulous time. It really is a fantastic event to be part of.” Race for Life in Peterborough has moved to the Embankment this year and takes place on Saturday June 12 at 11am. So far, almost 2,000 women have entered but the figure is well short of the number of participants hoped for by the charity. Hayley Gunn-Bruce, Peterborough event manager for Cancer Research UK, told ESP – “It could be that many women have simply forgotten to enter this year or, having completed the 5k event previously, feel that they don’t need to take part
GREEN FESTIVAL SWISH Peterborough fashionistas can show off their eco credentials by recycling some of their unwanted clobber and refreshing their wardrobe this month. If you haven’t been to a Swish before you simply take along up to six good quality items of clothes, accessories, bags (even books) and then on the night you can swap your items for others – easy! It’s a great way to bag some free items plus ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly will help show how one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Sue will give you a guide to what suits you best so even your swaps will be wise fashion choices you’ll really wear! Tickets are £5 and it’s on from 6pm to 9pm with delicious organic nibbles from Riverford. It’s on Thursday June 2 above Westgate Department Store, entry from Park Road. Booking essential on 01733 866437 or email penny.fletcher@pect.org.uk

again. But we want to remind these women just how important their contribution is. One-in-three people are diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives and research is very expensive. The only way we can beat the disease is with their help. So we are urging mums, grans, daughters, sisters, friends and work-mates to enter as soon as possible.” Come on girls – you can walk it in around an hour, you probably cover that on a shopathon in Queensgate on a Saturday! Who will you race for? Register now at www.raceforlife.org or call 0871 641 1111.
GREEN GEAR @ TRASHION SHOW Peterborough’s City College and ESP Magazine present a fabulous Trashion Show in Queensgate on Thursday June 9 as part of this year’s Green Festival. The ESP Dance Crew will open the catwalk shows at 3pm and 6pm compered by our very own Sarah Tempest. Face of ESP Lauren Hughes will be among the models showcasing recycled and refashioned outfits brought to life by students at the college. It’s time to make more of our clothes and there’s never been a better time to save cash and help save the planet by putting sewing skills to good

This race needs you!
Of course the ESP crew will be there to cheer you on and welcome you back so you could find yourself in next month’s mag. They’re also looking for cheerleaders and any community groups or schools to officially cheer on the girls too, so get in touch if you can help.

The day kicks off in Queensgate at 10am and includes demonstrations by Lush cosmetics, Zumba fitness displays at 11am, a rags to riches make-over at 12.00 with ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly, Arbonne cosmetics and the Vintage and Retro store. There’s plenty more throughout the day with hair demos by Pkai at 5pm and a booksigning with Julie Hill, author of the Secret Life Of Stuff at Waterstones on Bridge Street at 5.30pm.

MY SHOES DON'T GO WITH HIS CAR...
pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk
Research in the British Journal of Psychology confirms women fancy a man with a flash car because 'it can be exchanged for things important to their wellbeing like food or protection'. Yeah right. Sell your car and she'll take a new pair of Jimmy Choos over a slap-up meal every time.

SHE WILL BE MINE! Here I am pictured sitting on the embodiment of cool at Europe’s biggest outdoor bike show, the BMF, which is held annually at the East of England Showground. It’s a (wait for it) Harley Davidson XL 1200N Sportster. I’ve been thinking. If everyone who reads this magazine donates £1 to my ‘I need a Harley’ fund then I reckon I’d easily be able to get one because they’re only around £8k.
PEDDLING FOR PROSTATE CAUSE
And as a gesture of my goodwill I’d name-check in this column everyone who donated £1. So, a quid to see your name in print… what are you waiting for?!
The crew at Man About Town’s sponsors Balderston are swapping horse power for peddle power when they jump on their saddles in a bid to raise £500 for the Prostate Cancer Charity on Father’s Day June 19.
JAZZING UP A ROAST
I’ll be taking part in the ‘fun’ 20-mile cycle ride, which starts from their Hampton showroom (finishes there too) at 10am. The guys tell me they’ll do it in “two to three hours” (wishful thinking, I’ve seen fitter 90 year-olds riding mobility scooters). I’ve arranged for paramedics to be on standby for a couple of the lads in particular. Entry’s £10 for each adult and children aged 16 or under go free. It’s a worthy cause made even better with energyboosting bacon butties served up before start time. The ride will mainly follow dedicated cycle routes with the odd road thrown in for good measure. For entry details call TJ on: 01733 565470.
The Vineyard is fast becoming the place to be seen at in town and I can now vouch for it being the place for Sunday roast too.

Detail makes the difference to an eating out experience and The Vineyard’s devil in their roast dinner detail is the accompaniment of jazz with your meal. By jazz I don’t mean the successful men’s eau de toilette from the 1990s (I was always a Fahrenheit man). I’m referring to jazz music – and it’s the real thing too. A small band of jazz musicians are playing away while you’re busy tucking into Sunday’s mouthwatering best. The live music isn’t at all intrusive, if anything it helped my digestion (swallowing whole roast spuds is etiquette personified). Best of all the experience is free between 12 noon and 4pm (roast served 12-8pm).
HOW TO SPOIL A GOOD WALK It’s ironic the one game I’m absolutely rubbish at – golf – is advertised on this page. “Book now for a FREE 15 mins trial”…mmm…I just might, as long as I can drive a caddy…

LIONS ROAR TO BOND THEME Our Face of ESP Lauren Hughes never needs asking twice when there’s a glitzy invitation to get her glad rags on. It was the Peterborough Lions end of season awards bash and the theme for the night was James Bond (see Paparazzi page 31). The evening was a swanky affair with ball gowns and tuxedos. The only blot on the landscape was yours truly showing up in a t-shirt and jeans and heading straight for the hand gun vodka fountain. That look on my face is so attractive I know.

BEERS AT BORO BAR! It took a dozen goes at getting a photo of Boro Bar licensee Chris (the ginger haired one) with his eyes open, which meant the pint I’m pictured with was my fourth. His eyes finally lit up to the call of a word that rhymes with “bits”. Anyway, Chris and manager Ross re-opened the former Boy’s Head pub on Oundle Road in April. They now have live music every Friday and Saturday with karaoke on Thursdays. Oddly, Jager-bombs are their best seller so far! The bar is kitted out with big screens to watch the goggle box on and the boys are working on introducing a poker night too. For details of bands playing call Ross on: 07927 516759. Well done guys. Mines a Guinness next time…
BAR SOUNDS RIGHT UP MY STREET! Yet another city centre bar for us to enjoy this summer. I really like the sound of this one. North Street Bar opens this month where Mellilo's / Pussy Galores used to be (the old Masonic hall) on North Street. This independent venue run by local businessman Lee Clarke and his wife Teresa is decked out with furniture and mirrors sourced from vintage shops and auction houses. A brave move but it works beautifully, there's nowhere else like it in Peterborough.

It's homely and perfect to unwind in after a hard day's work with cocktails and a good selection of wines, champagnes and draught beers on the drinks menu. Music-wise (and this sounds right up my street) expect plenty of funk, soul and indie music. North Street Bar has a license until 3.30am on Fridays and Saturdays too, making it a great late night venue. I'm feeling a 'drinks after work' session coming on... I'm needing some James Brown...
Stress
Yep some suffer more than others. Take Lindsay Lohan for example, she’s so stressed at being famous for nothing that it allegedly makes her steal, snort drugs and drink more than Sue Ellen ever did. Anyway, here’s what stress means to me: Double quilted, rash, Radio 5 Live, Graeme Souness, “bike the bridge”, maps, blusher, bolted, sweaty, ride, restructure, glossing, Caffe Nero, Jelly Babies, pads, Nazionale, IBS, Post Office, follow-through, waistband and Audrina.

Summer Fun Have fun dressing up in this summer's hottest trends from Westgate Department Store.
Celebrate easy breezy summer fashion with some of this season’s leading trends like red, white and blue, floral, nautical and the modern take on jumpsuits. Floaty florals can compliment any figure, and can make any look flirty and feminine. Lauren’s kimono-style floral shirt is one take on the look but florals are everywhere and are ideal for lazy summer days. For an American influence, try something starry like the navy dress Kerry’s modelling and add denim to keep it casual. Keep on trend this summer by investing in something stripy for a nautical influence to your look, like this gorgeous jacket Lauren’s wearing and match with red and white. Jumpsuits are big this season and are a fun alternative for summer. Black or one colour jumpsuits mean you can go wild with your accessories to brighten them up.

Matty Speaks...
My Sneaky Peek At Nick’s Plans I was lucky enough to be invited to have a look around what will be the new venue where the London Inn used to be by Nick Pistolas. Although the new project is still at building site status you can already see that when finished this new venue is really gonna be something special. That’s all I’m going to say for now! Watch this space Stamford…
Dig The New BreeD! eP Stamford’s indie mods, the Harrington Blues, have completed recording their debut EP. Starting out back in February this five piece Brit/indie band from Stamford/Peterborough are making a name with their brash lyrics and catchy riffs. Inspired by Brit life, thoughts from a beer mat and a bit of modernist subculture they spend many a day/night at The Shed Studio, scratching up on their songs ready to entertain the nation! The first number, Getting Late, bops along like a modern day Housemartins Happy Hour, with a catchy chant-along chorus that name checks Stamford’s late great Quayhole Kates. Deadhead Doorman has a great move-it-and-shake-it vibe with Josh Goodwin cranking out cheeky vocals that remind me of one of my favourite frontmen Pete Shelly. The third track Modernist Subculture and the more mellow Liability both have a groove that’s reminiscent of Modern Life Is Rubbish, Blur era. Each song has its own great individual twang to it and I really rate this band. I reckon they’re certainly gonna be a band to watch out for in the future. Catch the lads live at Greetham Music and Ale Festival on May 28, the Toreador Stamford, on May 29, the new Boro Bar on Oundle Road in Peterborough on June 11 and Mama Liz's in Stamford July 2.
Double Festival to make up for Riverside no go Two venues in town will be putting on their own mini festivals on July 2. Stamford lad and local DJ Matt Taylor has been busy organising summer DJ festival Awakening at the Scotgate in Stamford. The event will run from 12 midday until 2.30am in the morning and as well as the many DJs they have playing, there’ll also be food on sale. Advance tickets are available from www.dontstayin.com. The next is Rockin The Garden which will be on at the Lord Burghley beer garden from 12 midday to 1pm. There’ll be four bands including the fantastic Groove Cartel, the Triptic Billies and yours truly Matt Zilch and The Meizters plus one more to be added. There’ll also be seven DJs which will include Dave Dews, Safe & Sound, Justin Wilson and Nicky Bell. This is a free event held with the purpose of raising money for a little boy who lives locally and needs a bone marrow transplant. It’ll be free entry with a voluntary donations bucket! I’ll have more info on this event next month.

The Latest Gossip Debut Gig!
The Latest Gossip are a band made up of three 14 year-old boys from in and around Stamford. They go by the genre of pop-punk/indie-rock with a healthy dose of post-hardcore thrown in for good measure. The band, who’ve been together for 4-5 months are looking to make themselves heard on the music scene and hope that you’ll be seeing a lot more of them in the near future. Their main influences are, You Me At Six, Kids In Glass Houses, The Beatles and Asking Alexandria. Catch their debut gig supporting my new Brit Pop tribute band Cool Britannia, at the Corn Exchange on June 3. Check out the lads at www.myspace.com/ihearttlg

PAPARAZZI Race For Life I was out with my camera this month at the Race For Life at Burghley Park to support all the girlies in my family running the Race For Life! Taking part were my mum, Aunty Jane, sister Sarah and cousin Laura all doing their bit to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Burghley Park was transformed into a sea of pink as 4,000 racers walked, jogged or ran a 5km loop of the grounds. There certainly was a great vibe down there and it’s quite moving to see what some of the women running have written on their individual race sheets pinned to their shirts. Finishing the race was an achievement for all who ran and it was an important day for so many remembering loved ones who’ve lost their lives to cancer. Let’s hear it for the girls!

THE TAN COMMANDMENTS Want to achieve a natural looking tan that’s perfect for you? Whether you’re going to Bognor or Barbados follow these top tips to fake it like a pro this summer... 1) Prepare skin properly. Exfoliate 24 hours before application to remove dead skin to achieve the best results. 2) Map out your body in stages, starting with your face, then neck and shoulders working your way down. Leave hands and feet ‘til last. Use a fake tan with bronzer in so you can see where you’ve been. 3) If you’re fair skinned use a gradual self-tan to achieve the right shade. You want it to be subtle and radiant. 4) Try to avoid washing your hands for about eight hours after initial application or you’ll have tanned arms but white hands – a real tell-tale sign. 5) Maintain your fake tan by moisturising every day. You could also mix a little fake tan with your moisturiser to really give you that radiant look and help avoid that blotchy fading period. 6) Don’t worry about making mistakes – fix them by mixing together sugar, sea salt, lemon and lime juice and massage into the necessary areas with warm water and a flannel.

SAFEGUARD YOUR CROWN JEWELS BOYS! June is Everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month which aims to raise awareness and money to help fund research into prostate and testicular cancers. The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is home to the UK’s leading male cancer campaign and has the first and only centre dedicated to male cancer research – the Everyman Centre. Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men aged 15-44 with roughly 2,000 cases a year in the UK whilst prostate cancer has become the most common cancer in men, overtaking lung cancer and affecting more than 37,000 men each year in the UK. To help support the campaign various companies such as Asda and Ted Baker are kindly donating a percentage from sales of certain items to Everyman. Menkind are also showing their support by donating 5 per cent of the profits on various items during their Father’s Day promotion (May 31 – June 19). Items include a 80s iPhone case (£13), a BBQ tool set (£25) and Star Trek Kirk bath robe (£45) and many more. As well as buying the various items above, you can do your bit to help support male cancer research this June by taking part in their fun Turn Blue events! You could Turn Blue in your office at work, in school or even just with a group of friends. Download your fundraising pack free by visiting www.everymancampaign.org or by calling 0800 731 9468.

a salon dream - come true
Two school friends who ended up pursuing the dream of becoming hairdressers have now fulfilled their ultimate ambition to open a salon of their own. SaVi on Oundle Road has seen the former First Aid centre (and bridal shop before that) transformed into a gorgeous boutique style salon run by Samantha and Vicky. “We’ve both known each other since we were 11 yearsold and then ended up training and working together as hairdressers locally,” explains Vicky. “Then we both took a break to have kids but have always aspired to run a salon. “We’re great friends and intend to reflect that to our clients, offering a friendly, affordable but high quality service where you don’t have to pay over the odds to look great.” SaVi has a lovely boutique chic feel which looks fabulous and a welcoming atmosphere where they aim to treat your individual needs. It’s ideally situated just outside the city centre and has the benefit of free off-road parking, is open six days a week and is open late on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
ESP OFFER SaVi currently offer cut and blow dry at £28, colours start at £26 and the salon offers treatments such as the Brazilian Blowdry for amazing results on frizzy hair, plus bridal and prom styling. There’s 20 per cent off for ESP readers this month so give them a call on 01733 310222.

wow factor In the hands of top city stylist Kai Wan from P.Kai hair she really has been given a celebrity make-over. While stars regularly wow us with their statement hairstyles, Kai wanted to show that you too can reinvent yourself without it costing a fortune. With a stunning look created by make-up artist Lisa Hinks of Hollywood Glam in Bourne and outfits to die for by Peterborough fashion designer Enya Mooney, this incredible transformation by P.Kai hair really takes your breath away. P.Kai’s two city salons have built a fine reputation for creating the most amazing up-dos with real wow factor. Owner and head stylist Kai teaches for Wella and passes on his expertise to his professional team of stylists – each of whom have their own unique take on hairdressing. So, whatever look you want P.Kai will have the stylist to achieve it. “People are far more adventurous these days and with stars like Cheryl Cole and Danni Minogue – who’s the queen of changing her style from the basis of a simple bob – people take inspiration,” says Kai. “Lauren’s basic look has been completely given a bold new slant by styling it differently and this is achievable for everyone. Your hair is an easy and instant way to brighten up your look. What’s more from around £25 upwards you can achieve results like this. There’s so much doom and gloom about I say be ballsy and go for it!”

ESP’s Susan Saunders grabs an exclusive interview with Katie Price in Peterborough. One thing I was surprised to discover is that after receiving Tweets of support from fan Adele Hancock, 14, from Nottinghamshire, Katie contacted Adele and offered her some oneon-one time in a ‘meet and greet’ session. Somewhat baffled at the display so far and in general at the whole Katie Price experience, I asked what she felt there was left to achieve.
OK, so what do we really know about Katie Price? We know that she has three children (Harvey, Junior and Princess Tiaamii), was married to Peter Andre, twice, was briefly married (even though some of us silently willed her not to) to Alex Reid and she’s famous for speaking her mind. To try and avoid conducting a biased interview (I quite like her), I approached my Facebook friends to gauge opinion and was slightly overwhelmed by the ‘Marmite effect’ she has on people – some really aren’t too keen! Needless to say, I was expecting the unexpected when I interviewed Katie at her recent book signing at Waterstones in Peterborough. After being inundated with paparazzi requests and posing provocatively for the cameras, Katie then suddenly appearing quite shy, disappeared behind the Waterstones banner. With paps still trying to get unflattering pictures of her this was where we ended up having our chat! Could the bashfulness be due to holiday jetlag? Perhaps; or maybe it was more to do with the rough ride she’s been receiving in the press over the last six months. Who knows? Happy to be back in Peterborough, Katie went on to sign her most recent book, a novel called Paradise, for a stream of eager and screaming fans, although she’s due to release another one hot of the back of it in July, called Combat Girl (you read it here first)! This was somehow a different woman to the one I was expecting; ‘normal’ straight blonde hair, grey leggings and a checked shirt – not the image we’re used to. The most extravagant part of her outfit was her cowboy hat and a bandage on her arm: “It’s my tattoo but I don’t want them [the paps] to see it,” she revealed. Ooh maybe it was an inscription of her new hottie boyfriend’s name? Said hottie, Leandro Penna, was in attendance at the signing and from what I could gather, couldn’t speak much English, which might prove a tad tricky...
“My main focus is always my children and then my horses and then my career.”

“Lots and lots. I have my equestrian range, my new day22 range (clothing range), another perfume, more make-up, more TV shows, filming and TV work in America. I’m beginning filming for a ‘Jordan Idol’ type show next month but before that I’m filming a serious documentary (1 hour special) and filming my new reality series to be screened at the end of the year.” And so, what would be the focus for the next 12 months? “My main focus is always my children and then my horses and then my career.” Admitting that she’d had her fair share of ups and downs over the last few years, she firmly expressed her highlight as – “still being here and enjoying my life.” Hmmm, I wasn’t overly convinced. I’m sure it is a highlight that despite being knocked down a few times she’s able to enjoy life, but I felt like she was holding something back. I guess that comes from years of being burnt! One thing that I took from our meeting was that whilst there’s such an awful picture painted of her in the press, I do personally think she gets a bit of a raw deal. Yes, she’s been through a divorce and it appears that she gets into rebound, unsuitable relationships but so do many others and they rightly don’t get burned at the stake for it (thankfully), so why should she? I get the sense that she’s perhaps quite misunderstood – “It’s not so much I think, I know I’m misunderstood,” Katie agreed. Every book, picture and piece of merchandise was signed and when asked about her Peterborough fans she said: “Thank you for supporting me and I’ll make sure none of you are disappointed today.” One fan was crying, but thankfully the tears were happy ones as Kayleigh Hobbs, 17 from Ravensthorpe told me – “Today was my first day of meeting her. I told her she was my idol and she said ‘that was really sweet’. She’s an inspiration because she’s been through so much and she’s still so grounded and honest about everything. She’s taught me that you can go through the worst things but if you pick yourself back up, you can still do well.” Could the reason that Katie keeps herself in the spotlight be because she needs to feel validated by keeping busy? I’m not sure anyone outside of her trusted circle will ever really know. Love her or not, Katie’s definitely here to stay so watch this space for more happy news and outrage as the months unfold. I was expecting the unexpected when I met Katie and I guess that’s what I got.

LIONS AND DRAGONS We love all types of night out in the Boro so this month our photographers had a busy one and dropped by the Peterborough Lions Rugby Club 007 Ball and the relaunch of the Dragon pub in Werrington. Pep Cipriano felt considerably underdressed when he saw how the Lions team had dressed the part at their 007 themed night. Glamorous gowns (for the girls!), black tie and an amazing handgun shaped ice sculpture meant this night was licensed to thrill. Our Face of ESP Lauren Hughes was one of the special guests and she definitely looked the glamorous bond girl. Meanwhile Mike Harris headed for the live music and lively atmosphere at the Dragon pub on Hodgeson Avenue. There was a huge party going on to celebrate Andy and Stuart taking over as landlords – these guys have done such good stuff with the Ploughman in Werrington centre that there are high hopes for what they can achieve here. The beers were flowing, the music was playing and a cracking night was certainly had by all!

Sophie Ellis-Bextor With a new album out this month, Sophie Ellis-Bextor is set to Make A Scene. Sharon McAllister catches up with one of today’s best British female artists… While we chat Sophie is on her way to appear on Rob Brydon’s TV show alongside Bruce Forsyth. Then there are shows like Lorraine and This Morning and the list goes on as she prepares for back to back press and appearances to promote her new album. “Live television always feels a little bit out of your comfort zone,” she admits, “but most interviewers put you at your ease. As long as I’m performing I’m OK, I prefer that to being interviewed.” This month Sophie begins a summer tour and will be sharing the stage with former Peterborough singer Andy Bell and Erasure at a gig in Thetford Forest on June 10 which she says she’s really looking forward to –“I’ve not met them before but I’ve heard brilliant things about his voice and how good they are live. I’ve done gigs at Thetford before – it has a real festival feel, it’s very relaxed.” With her demure looks you could be forgiven for thinking Sophie might be a little aloof but she’s actually extremely down to earth taking everything in her stride and proves very easy to chat to. Despite being one of the most well groomed pop stars around Sophie says she’s just a pretty ordinary mum and occasionally as unkempt as the rest of us when she’s rushing around on the school run with her two boys. So is this perfectly turned out pop star with poise styled to the max? “Nah… I’d say 90% is stuff I do myself, but I do tend to use a stylist if I’ve got a big video and I want something specially made.” She’s clearly excited about her new single Starlight, a catchy but chilled dance anthem which she describes as – “one of my favourites off the album… although it’s slightly more melancholy, I like a little melancholy! “It’s all about the melody for me – I’m a pop girl at heart! For me I love writing and performing they’re the book ends to what I do really and are my favourite stages.” Her fourth album Make A Scene has seen her co-write much of the material but again she seems to be the artist of choice for collaborations with most of the industry’s top writers and producers like Freemasons, Calvin Harris, Cathy Dennis and Armin Van Buuren. “I think I work best with people who inspire me,” explains Sophie. “I’ve been around a while now so no-one’s questioning my motives any more, they know I love what I do” When asked why she seems to be in such demand for these collaborations she replies with a laugh – “I’ve no idea!” One thing’s for sure, this multi-platinum selling artist looks set to provide the soundtrack to our summer once again. The single Starlight and Sophie’s new album Make A Scene are both released on June 13.

Topo Gigio’s One of Peterborough’s best known and most long established restaurants is under new ownership – it’s had a makeover on the menu and is sporting a fresh look. We made a return to Topo Gigio’s to see what’s new… Things are different at Topo’s – new owner Paulo has introduced a Portuguese twist to the Italian menu including delicious peri-peri flame-grilled chicken and a change from the usual pizzas ensuring this independent restaurant stands out from the crowd. Whilst waiting for the food to be freshly prepared, Paulo gave us his recommendations from the new menu. You’ll find an all new ‘sides’ section – Contorni – where you can select from a range of dishes such as spicy rice, corn on the cob, creamy mash, and French fries (these all go perfectly with the peri-peri chicken). There’s a selection of new pizzas including the Tropical with ham and pineapple, The Banana, which is a new and interesting combination of mozzarella, tomato, banana and cream, and the Mediterranean Prawn Fresca, with prawns, red onions and olives. We tried the Catupiry – a Brazilian take on pizza. It has the usual tomato, mozzarella with extra chicken, sweetcorn and a creamy catupiry cheese which was delicious!
“It was succulent, tender and full of all those flame-grilled flavours and spices” Next on the menu was the Full Luma – a Portuguese chicken combo consisting of a whole chicken, and plenty of chips. The chicken’s marinated for at least 24 hours in their unique peri-peri sauce, and then flame-grilled to order with your chosen spice. The

combo’s range from a quarter chicken, chicken wings to a whole chicken, with a selection of sides and drinks all included in the price. Well, the chicken definitely ticked all the right boxes. It was succulent, tender and full of all those flame-grilled flavours and spices. The chef then cooked us another favourite dish on the menu, the Arrosto di Pesce (which, may I add, is locally sourced from the Portuguese fish market). The fish was served whole – accompanied by sliced roast potatoes and vegetables. Again, this tasted lovely and the fish was cooked to perfection. The Insalata Mediterranean (Mediterranean Salad) was beautifully presented and a refreshing side dish to the three main courses, topped with feta cheese, olive oil, garlic and lemon juice. Of course, we couldn’t leave without popping upstairs to check out the new bar. It’s a great place for anyone to retreat and chill out with a cocktail after a lovely meal downstairs. There’s a laid back ambience and always the best of 80s, 90s and Latin music, plus – it’s always free to hire. Don’t forget, lunchtime is buffet time at Topo Gigio’s, so from Monday – Friday pay just £5.99 and eat all you like between 12noon and 3pm. Or if you fancy one of the dishes from the menu you can order that too. Go on, try it out for yourself!

Oundle Road, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 703495 There’s something comforting about homely, traditional pub food and the Cherry Tree on Oundle Road knows how to serve it up in tasty fashion. If you want a homecooked style meal but want a night off from the oven this pub has it covered with everything from steak and mixed grills through to pasta dishes, fish or curry. I opted for the homemade pie of the day – steak and ale – with seasonal vegetables. The pastry was tasty and absolutely packed with meat and came with a generous dish of extra gravy! At £6.95 it’s great value and a good hearty meal – no measly portions here, but you can ask for a smaller one if you’re not feeling as greedy as me!

For dessert the raspberry sundae took me back to my childhood – packed with fruit, ice cream, sprinkles and a wafer, this was a dessert delight During the day you can enjoy breakfast, sandwiches or jacket spuds for a lighter bite if you prefer or take your pick from the menu. Food’s available from 11.30am-2pm, Monday to Saturday and then 6pm-9pm in the evenings when you can enjoy two main meals from the specials board for just a tenner! Give yourself a day off from the cooking on Sundays between 12.00 and 4.30pm. The Cherry Tree and its ever friendly hosts, Ann and Jess Caprio, must be one of the best loved pubs in Peterborough. Known for its great real ales, lively music nights and events this really is the city’s ‘local’. It’s a traditional pub offering quality meals at sensible prices and, let’s face it, there aren’t many of those left these days. It’s good to see someone’s still getting it right. There’s also a separate function room, if you have a meeting or special occasion, with a surprising amount of space.

Some other commonly found ingredients in many Thai dishes include – Mushrooms – good levels of B Vitamins, Iron and Selenium, some (particularly shiitake mushroom) contain beta-glucans and lentinan which are polysaccharide compounds which are thought to have anti-cancer properties so are good for our immune systems. Chillies – great for circulation and immunity.
“Thai food has to be one of my personal favourites...” Lemon grass – found in many Thai dishes which may support the urinary tract and can calm the digestive system. Galangal – this is similar to the ginger family as we know it, known to have calming properties, it may also help reduce inflammation and not forgetting it’s said to be an aphrodisiac! Coconut – may help boost metabolism and immunity it may also help lower cholesterol despite it getting a bad reputation of being a bad fat. Keffir lime leaves – found in many Thai foods and are said to help prevent gum disease if the leaf is rubbed along the teeth and gums (the juice of the fruit may also help to prevent gum disease). These leaves bring a lot of flavour to many Thai dishes. Tom yum soup deserves a special mention as it has some superb healthy ingredients as mentioned above (mushrooms, lemon grass, keffir lime leaves , chillies etc), so why not give it a try? Tofu is fermented soya bean curd which is used in many Thai dishes as it absorbs many of the flavours so in this form it can be tasty. It’s also a great option for vegetarians/vegans. Some benefits of this food are due to the isoflavones which may help hormonal balancing and it also contains B Vitamins and Calcium.
Thai
Thai foods offer many variations of noodles, one of the popular dishes is the famous pad thai dish which is made from rice noodles. This can be made into a ‘healthier’ version by asking for the sugar to be taken out and by adding in more veg. Enjoy, Karen For more information on health and nutrition go to www.karendevine.co.uk

SWAPS
Thai food has to be one of my personal favourites, not least because it can deliver some really healthy dishes. Of course as with all cuisine there can be ways of cooking which bring too much fat into the diet but generally Thai food is fresh and cooked quickly which holds more nutrients. Many of the health benefits come from garlic, shallots, coriander and turmeric which are all known immune boosters and offer digestive support. Traditionally Thai food includes lots of fish (rich in Omega 3 fatty acids) and whilst some dishes do include meat they also enjoy using lots of healthy vegetables and soya along with rice and noodles.
Instead of the meat try swapping for a fish dish or even try some fermented tofu.

the pub after many pints. The pub is definitely where I thought of the idea of having a giant snail very slowly crossing the zebra crossing. The version you saw on the television was the first take, which went perfectly. However because we were full of so much energy we decided to do it again, but the second time didn’t quite go as planned. As I was lying on the floor (remember, as a giant snail) two people got out of the vehicle next to me. They turned out to be police officers who politely said we don’t have a clue what you’re doing but get lost (putting it mildly).”
It’s not every day you get to speak to a man who went to the same school as Osama Bin Laden, and it’s rare to find somebody who’s been attacked by Pierce Brosnan or been camping with Gillian McKeith. This is just a small part of Dom Joly’s colourful life – which is explored in detail during his Welcome To Wherever I Am tour. During his recent performance at the Cresset in Bretton I found Dom limping around his dressing room – “You’ll have to excuse my foot,” Dom explained, “I thought I’d impress my kids by taking part in Total Wipe-out. I broke four metatarsals so let’s just say I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. People assume I had the accident on the big red balls but I actually did quite well on them. I did the damage on a new obstacle, which you’ll see during the Christmas Special.” During the show itself, Dom played to his strengths, showing some of his favourite clips from his comedy TV shows, and discussing his many random trips around the world. It’s more of ‘An Audience With’ than a stand up show, which suits his style. “I’m quite nervous that it’s just me on stage... being me. I've always deliberately been quite spoofy and used alter egos, and that wasn’t scary at all because it wasn't really me, it was a character. So, I hope people enjoy the real me.” Perhaps being best known (in my opinion) for Trigger Happy TV the co-producer, director and star said – “Like most of my ideas, the sketches for the TV show were thought of in

Those who don’t know Dom for his TV work may know him as author of the book The Dark Tourist which documents his travels to odd places around the world. Of course, he’s no stranger to dangerous locations. Dom’s childhood was spent in war-torn Lebanon, where instead of swapping marbles in the schoolyard, he had a shrapnel collection. Discussing one of his favourite places he visited for the book, he explained – “I love skiing, so I decided to do it in Tehran. I actually felt extremely safe being there. If anything, I feel more threatened walking through London at times. And they really know how to party. I even ordered an alcoholic pizza.” Continuing with his tales of travel, he went on to say – “One thing I’ve noticed about the experience of visiting these so called dangerous places is that the people are always friendly and it's just the governments who are the idiots. I wanted to go to Libya a few years back but I was banned, so I might try going again soon.” Of course there is much more to be said about the man who’s travelled around the world to film a documentary on drinking alcohol. I could also discuss why Robert Smith from The Cure has never spoken to Dom since they last met, but I think you should find out these things for yourself... If you were unable to see Dom in Peterborough, I’d highly recommend you do so in other venues close to the city: Kings Lynn – June 8 at the Corn Exchange – 01553 764864 Milton Keynes – July 14 at the Stables – 01908 280800 Lincoln – June 23 at the Drill Hall – 01522 873894 Cambridge – July 30 at the Junction – 01223 511511 Even if it’s just to experience the most original ending to a show I’ve ever come across, it’s definitely worth the trip!

RED, WHITE AND BLUES Only a month on from the Royal wedding and the bunting has been taken down, the Union Jacks put away, the ‘road closed’ signs back in their rightful places (usually on a parkway in Peterborough) and the only things left ‘smiling’ are the last remaining dried out, curled up egg and cress sarnies. And Blue only managed 11th in the Eurovision Song Contest. I honestly haven’t felt such an anti-climax since Jordan and Peter moved to America – but then came back again.
NO FLIES ON ME
After my own wedding I had no sense of come down (come on, the day itself may be pretty amazing but after that there’s the honeymoon and the presents and can it really get more exciting than his and hers bath towels and a food processor?!) but after Wills and Kate’s wedding I’m practically booking myself a one way ticket to the Priory. It’s not that I’m a royalist it’s just that we really made the most of the day off. We did the whole street party thing (check out the pic, my baby girl Lola had way too much fun!) got smashed on cheap Cava, spoke to neighbours we’d never spoken to before, the sun was shining and we waved our little flags as if our world depended on it – safe in the knowledge that we still had another three days off courtesy of another bank holiday. And then Tuesday came and it was back to boring normality and the grey cloud I find myself under. There’s only one thing for it, Prince Harry and Kate’s younger sister Pippa need to hurry up and get it on because if those two got married that really would be some party, especially if it got us another day off.

EXFACTOR News from the X-Factor camp seems to be changing all the time with constant speculation, rumours, and denials but one thing is for sure, this year’s X-Factor will be going ahead without Simon Cowell, without Cheryl Cole and without Dannii Minogue. Officially Dannii resigned as filming clashes with her overseas commitments to Australia’s Got Talent; unofficially rumours abound that the schedules were devised to make it impossible for Dannii to remain on the judging panel as Simon Cowell wanted to freshen up the whole show with new blood. Whilst it makes sense that he’d want to breathe new life into it, if that’s true, why on earth is he keeping Louis Walsh of all people? They may be friends but let’s not forget that Louis is the man who gave us Jedward and Wagner and thought Eton Road could be the next big boy band. ‘Eton who?’ I hear you cry – exactly.

Rugby Legends in the Boro!
ESP’s Mikey Clarke scrums down with Austin Healey and Will Greenwood… It’s not often that a celebrity appearance in Peterborough would encourage you to cancel a holiday. But this is exactly what two families did after their kids heard they’d won the opportunity of meeting two rugby legends. Young players from Peterborough Lions Rugby Club, and pupils from Heritage Park School in Stanground, won the exclusive coaching session with England rugby heroes Austin Healey and Will Greenwood after winning a competition led by local company BGL Group. If that wasn’t enough, on the day some of the young players were also awarded the opportunity to visit Twickenham (which is of course home of English rugby) in June whilst singing the National Anthem on the pitch. It certainly beats my school trip to Ferry Meadows!
Photos: Emma Bothamley
Both Peterborough Lions Rugby Club and Heritage Park School had submitted a short video as part of the BGL and Super Skills Travel competition, explaining why they should win the coaching session. The teams were selected from hundreds of entries and both videos were so impressive that the judges decided to run a joint session for both teams here in Peterborough. These winning entries can be viewed at – www.superskillstravel.com/bgl

www.espmag.co.uk
Greenwood went on to say – “The kids have had an amazing time today. It reminds me of when I started playing rugby at the age of seven. I’d meet up with my mates, drink some pop, have great banter, play a game or two, and then go home tired. That’s just what these kids are doing. Who knows, it could be one of them winning the World Cup one day.” Whilst fans moved increasingly closer and closer, Healey expressed the same passion seeing how happy the kids were adding – “We both feel that BGL have done a fabulous thing here and do great things for the local community. This is just one of the many things they’re involved in, and as we share their passion for wanting to help these kids; Greenwood and I were only too keen to get involved.” With the fans almost literally starting to climb over me to get to the celebs I took this as my last chance to ask about the appearances on Strictly and the Hole In The Wall. “Both were extremely fun shows to make,” Healey said with the cheeky little grin many of my female friends have mentioned. “Hole In The Wall was such a good laugh and I loved that Strictly was so challenging. I’m still tempted to get out the sequin outfits at weekends, but of course this would be for my eyes only!”
Obviously the kids (and parents) were thrilled to have the celebrities in Peterborough, but it was nice to see that Healey and Greenwood seemed just as happy to be here. Healey, who’s also famous for his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, explained – “I know Peterborough very well. It feels homely here as I only live down the road in Leicester. I come here a lot when I fancy a change of scenery.” Also no stranger to our city, Greenwood continued – “My wife actually went to school here, and my sister commutes to the city centre quite often for meetings.”
And with actual fear of being trampled on, I finished the chat and joined many of the parents for a cold drink and a burger in the sun.
Although it was obvious by the enormous smile on every child’s face, rugby World Cup winner
For this, I too may have been tempted to cancel a trip to Skeggy!

You did it girls! Over 600 women stepped it out along with Face of ESP Lauren Hughes in this year’s Midnight Walk raising thousands for Sue Ryder. The organisers asked walkers to get in the party spirit as it was Royal wedding weekend and you did them proud with tiaras, wedding gowns and err… lots of pink fluffy bunny ears! This year walkers set off from Peterborough Greyhound Stadium after a fun warm up. Organiser Helena Waters told ESP – "It was a brilliant night with an amazing atmosphere but it really hit home when reading the personal messages of who people were walking for. It costs on average £120 a day for a nurse at Thorpe Hall so all the money raised will go a long way. We hope to raise £100,000 and would like to thank everyone for taking part and the volunteers and marshals for giving up their evening to help."

Lauren battled the blisters but still thought it was a great night – “The Midnight Walk was an amazing night – I’d definitely recommend women take part in this event and I shall be participating again next year.”

LAUREN’S ODDS ON FOR A GREAT NIGHT AT THE DOGS Face of ESP Lauren Hughes was treated like a real winner at Peterborough Greyhound Stadium when she enjoyed a cracking night out there recently. It was just one of her fabulous prizes and Lauren and her friends had an exciting evening dining in the Race View restaurant while betting on the dogs.
If you fancy a different night out Lauren would certainly recommend it – “It was a really great night. We all had a lovely three-course meal and came away so full!
Whether you want to dine in style with table service and your bets taken while you enjoy a meal in the 400-seater restaurant or prefer a more casual night in the bar or betting trackside, there’s something for everyone. There are some great vouchers and deals to suit every occasion whether it’s a family night out, fun with friends or a corporate event – check the website for their special offers on www.peterboroughgreyhounds.com
“It was good fun presenting the owner of the winning dog with their trophy and to share the experience with my friends. I didn’t win, but one of my friends did on that race, and we all loved it!”
Where else can you go for some entertainment where you stand a chance of winning your money back too? Excitement, fun, food and a top night out – you can bet on it at the dogs.
Of course the Face of ESP Stakes were particularly popular and Lauren presented the winner’s trophy down on the track.

GREEN LANTERN Movie Preview
Released: June 17
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard Director: Martin Campbell
DC Comics’ superheroes – bar Batman of course – are clearly losing the battle against Marvel. But Ryan Reynolds hopes to change that when one of its ‘second string’, the Green Lantern, gets the big screen treatment. The buzz has been high since its recent trailers reversed the negative feedback that plagued the early footage, as Reynolds’ Hal Jordan becomes the first human to wear the mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers. Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively joins him in the cast, along with Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes) and Peter Sarsgaard (Flightplan) on villain duties. Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clarke Duncan voice prominent Green Lantern corps members in this special effects-laden extravaganza. With Superman getting yet another reboot, Reynolds could clearly put Green Lantern and DC on the map – and also help revitalise plans for a Justice League of America ensemble movie to battle Marvel’s forthcoming Avengers cash-cow.
TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON Released: June 29. Cast: Shia LeBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Patrick Dempsey. Director: Michael Bay The first Transformers movie was a real pleasant surprise – the second film only seemed like it finished last week. I’m not one of the legions of Michael Bay-haters – I enjoyed Bad Boys and Armageddon – but let’s hope the third film doesn’t suffer the same fate of the sequel which, even though a box office success, was an overly long, tedious and convoluted mess.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
Number one on Maxim’s most 100 beautiful women in the world
www.espmag.co.uk
This time it’s a race between the Autobots and Decepticons (boasting fan favourite Shockwave) to locate a downed Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the moon, as Bay aims to keep it simple and axes those two terrible goofy ‘bots from the last film.
KUNG FU PANDA 2
BRIDESMAIDS
Released: June 10. Cast: Jack Black, Gary Oldman
Released: June 24. Cast: Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne
The inevitable sequel to one of Dreamworks’ leading animations sees Jack Black returning as now fully-fledged Master Po.
One of the early US summer box office surprises has come in the form of this relatively low budget wedding-themed flick.
This time he teams up with The Furious Five – including Angelina Jolie and Jackie Chan – to take on a new nemesis in the form of Gary Oldman’s emperor peacock Lord Chen.
Saturday Night Live comedienne Kristen Wiig stars as a lovelorn and broke Maid of Honour who leads her soon-to-be married best friend and colourful bridesmaids on a wild ride down the road to matrimony.
With Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, Jean Claude Van-Damme and Danny McBride rounding off a truly impressive (or is that expensive?) cast, it looks like anybody with links to either comedy or martial arts has a piece of this panda action.
50
list, Rachel Huntington-Whiteley, has replaced bitchy ‘robotic actress in disguise’ Megan Fox – who fell out with Bay – as Shia LeBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and co all return.
She bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre wedding rituals as this critically-acclaimed comedy aims to leave bigger budget competition standing at the box office.

MORTAL KOMBAT
After garnering multiple gaming awards for its Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption gaming franchises – Rockstar has earned the right to experiment.
It’s a triumphant return to grace for the iconic beat ’em up franchise – with a welcome return to a traditional 2D view providing a pleasing retro feel.
L.A. NOIRE
(PS3/360) Out now
With three addictive game modes – arcade challenge, story and challenge tower – and the introduction of new big-hitting ‘X-Ray’ moves, there really is something for everyone as Sub-Zero, Raiden and co provide the best next-gen experience yet.
And once again they’ve pulled off something special with a risky, methodically-paced, 1940s set Los Angeles police adventure – with only last year’s PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain as a comparable yardstick.
PORTAL 2 (360/PS3/PC) Out now This eagerly-anticipated follow up to the little gem bundled in 2007’s The Orange Box has reached even dizzier heights. Once again developers Valve have absolutely nailed it, with an extended campaign mode (about double the length of its predecessor) thought-provoking puzzles and an all new co-op feature.
Not forgetting the gruesomely iconic fatalities, this is the best fighter this year.
With dry humour (featuring the excellent voice work of Stephen Merchant) this is one of the most original games you can get. Beware: this is seriously addictive stuff.

OPERATION FLASHPOINT: RED RIVER
MOTORSTORM: APOCALYPSE
LEGO PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
(360/PS3/PC) Out now
If you’re bored of the same old cars and regulation tracks then this PS3 exclusive is right up your street.
Great face and voice acting leaves you to crime-solve games of ‘truth or lies’ – and bar some niggling repetition – this is another impressive entry into the Rockstar annals.
(PS3) Out now
Gaming’s most realistic first person shooter franchise is traditionally a bit like Marmite – you’ll either love it or hate it. While the last game, Dragon Rising, was a ridiculously hard disappointment, Codemasters’ latest effort offers a more-balanced approach.
Sony’s Motorstorm franchise has always offered originality, and the latest instalment delivers a series of jaw-dropping multiple vehicle stages that are simply mind-blowing.
As a member of a four-man squad, this is immersive stuff for shooter fans looking for a serious challenge – but casual players should probably still steer well clear.
This probably isn’t for racing purists, but if storming round a ‘world-ending’ earthquake-torn city sounds like your thing – then this is well worth a blast.

Surely we couldn’t go a month without a Lego game? Well with the recently-released On Stranger Tides at cinemas, this really isn’t a surprise. Encompassing all four films, the sea-faring nature of Jack Sparrow and co is arguably a snugger fit than most – and in terms of gameplay and graphics it needs no explanation. For kids and families alike, walking the plank has never been so much fun. #####
LEGO NINJAGO
DISSIDIA 012: FINAL FANTASY (PSP) Out now
(DS) Out now
Innovation is always something that’s never short on supply with Japanese developers – and this fighting-cum-RPG set in the Final Fantasy universe is no different.
Yes, it’s the second Lego game of the month – but at least this DS-exclusive offers variation with one of their fledgling franchises.
This 3D world has a high difficulty curve, but with persistence the unique battle system offers up a gratifying slice of action – complete with some luscious presentation. You could argue this is just for fans, but it’s a massive game, and if you’re new to Square Enix’s premier franchise, there’s no better way to start.
Sadly variety isn’t always the spice of life, and despite some noteworthy strategy elements – as you guide your team of ninjas through this Lego-themed world to master Spinjitzu – weak visuals and lack-lustre combat gives this a dated-look. It doesn’t lack effort, but unfortunately this is simply for fans of the series. #####

THE 3RD BIRTHDAY (PSP) Out now Even though the PSP is lagging in the handheld market, those guys at Square Enix are doing their best to put it on the map (see the online review of Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for proof of that) with another four-star effort. This ambitious shooter-adventure definitely wouldn’t look out of place on home consoles as cutting-edge graphics bring the Parasite Eve series to life on Sony’s handheld. Despite some awkward control niggles, this is compelling stuff. #####

PAUL (15)
Released: June 6
Released: June 13
James Franco picked up an Oscarnomination for this portrayal of mountain climber Aron Ralston – and deservedly so.
Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost get another crack at the Hollywood market with this sporadically funny road trip comedy.
This drama from Brit Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle is compelling stuff as Ralston aims to extricate his crushed arm from a boulder in the middle of an isolated Utah canyon – with only his thoughts for company.

Starring as two sci-fi geeks travelling across America’s UFO heartland, they inadvertently pick-up an out-of-this-world passenger, an alien called Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen), which turns their world upside down.

The page that enjoyed watching the magnificent pageantry of the Royal wedding. I was particularly looking forward to seeing what headgear the Queen would wear to Westminster Abbey. A crown, a hat or a fascinator? In the end I was thrilled to see that Elton John just decided to wear his wig.

COMEDY GIGS A RIGHT ROYAL MONEY-MAKER Following on from the Royal wedding I was slightly disappointed that at the reception during the first dance (Your Song sung by Ellie Goulding) the Royal jester-for-the-day Prince Harry didn't perform it as a duet. He could've had the room in stitches by producing a Union Jack thong from his pocket and going up to bridesmaid Pippa Middleton to croon – "You can tell everybody, this is your thong…" So with Britain and our city still celebrating the marriage of his Royal Highness Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton of Commonshire I’m delighted to present the official Royal Mostly Funny wedding collection. These exquisite hand-crafted keepsakes are available for you, your family and mates down the pub to treasure for never and never. Novelty number plate After attaching a JU5T WED number plate to the back of the Aston Martin Volante that Wills & Kate drove off in, we’ve managed to secure the number plates which we understand Prince Harry was contemplating attaching to the car the morning after the wedding for the happy couple. It reads JU5T BED. Decorative bunting What says there's been a Royal wedding more than bunting and cucumber sandwiches? Therefore, we are proud to announce we’ve taken a pile of leftovers from a street party near to ESP HQ and have turned the triangle-shaped sandwiches into bunting using some string we found in the editor’s drawer. Cheesy Ear plugs Who can forget the moment when BBC cameras tried to cross live to their Peterborough-born presenter Jake Humphrey onboard the Lancaster bomber during the fly past and due to a technical glitch there was no sound! (If only there'd been the same glitch every time they'd crossed over to Fearne Cotton). Well now you can ensure Fearne Cotton never ruins your enjoyment of a live TV programme again with ear plugs that are made from three-week-old mature cheddar cheese that's been left outside the fridge to go stale.
FRINGE COMEDY @ THE CORE June 5 There’s a new comedy venue on the local scene that’s just up the road called the Core which is based inside the Cube, a new council and leisure building in Corby. They’re running some good stand-up nights worth a look but this month it’s a slightly different night with Ross Sutherland. He’s appearing on Sunday June 5 as part of Sunday Sessions spoken word evening Word Furnace. Ross will perform his acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe show The Three Stigmata Of Pacman, a touching and often hilarious tale of his journey from music journalist to wannabe poet living back at home with his parents. Tickets are £6 (£4 for concessions) on 01536 470470. www.thecorecorby.com

NOT GOODBYE, JUST BONJOUR Finally, last month like millyons and millyons of comedy fans I was saddened to hear that the writer of Only Fools & Horses, John Sullivan had died at the age of 64. Also responsible for other memorable comedies like Citzen Smith, Just Good Friends and Dear John, he'll quite rightly be remembered for penning the adventures of the Trotters and their Peckham pals. Fittingly on Friday May 13, the BBC1 tribute John Sullivan – Comedy Genius was a worthy way to remember his contribution to British comedy. I sat down that evening with a large, I say a large Chivas Regal, with coke… to watch, laugh, and gaze upon glory. God bless John Sullivan and long live Hooky Street.

Think summer… think lazy days in the Charters beer garden. Well known for having the biggest and best beer garden in the city centre and for staging some great beer festivals and live music, Charters is bringing it all together with the launch of Summer Sundays on June 5. There’s a fantastic line-up of artists set to appear throughout the summer with Isiah the first act to perform. In its perfect location by the river and with its permanent outdoor marquee, seating and grassed area Charters is simply the best place to chill out on a Sunday afternoon. The Summer Sunday sessions will also include acts such as The Jamie Godwin Group, The Gangsters, Latino Sound and many more so keep an eye on the website for full details. Summer Sundays will run on June 5, June 19 and then every Sunday throughout the summer ending on August 14. Even better, the events are free and start at 3pm. The bar’s Easter beer festival was a huge success and there’ll be more to come. With a great range of Thai food available from the bar and their range of tasty Oakham Ales on tap it’s definitely the place to kick back and enjoy the summer so bring it on! It’s incredible to think it but the guys at Charters are currently busy preparing for their 20th birthday celebrations! So expect more news on great events to come to mark this momentous occasion on the Peterborough pub scene. www.oakhamales.co.uk

ESP’s Andy Slater is back in the camper van and off to report on some of the smaller festivals.
Fancy a road trip? Ferocious Dog
The Bearded crew have the site for the next ten years so it looks like I shall get to know that journey quite well, cheers Sally and Richard for a great weekend. Well the next few weeks are building up nicely with the three day Festival Of Soul do down at the Plough in Farcet Fen from June 17-19, which is very local folks and inexpensive and deserves your support. Saturday night has city band Motor City Vipers filling the floor with classic soul and Motown and then you have DJs all weekend. For £25 each for a weekend ticket including camping it ain’t bad! Give the guys a go and they will love you for your kindness. www.festivalofsoul.co.uk
Bearded Friendly People
That’s the first music festival under our belt, no serious injuries embarrassing moments and Jezebel the camper van behaved beautifully if not a little slippery over damp fields. Bearded Theory was a great festival which I think will take some topping this summer. The new setting of the National Trust pile Kedleston Hall was a perfect backdrop to what was a well organised festy with great music and fine people to talk, laugh and generally have fun with.
Mundo Jazz
Zion Train blasted a cracking Sunday tea time of dub reggae, which is why we decided to have a couple of beers more and drive home first thing Monday morning – in a field at 6am work at 9am… mad!
Eddie and the Hotrods blew UK Subs and The Undertones out of the park, Ferocious Dog had a marquee full of people bouncing which continued bouncing to Mama Roisin. However, revelation of the weekend to me was Mundo Jazz. Hailing allegedly from Russia (northwest England methinks) they had the crowd howling with laughter for an hour. Comedy mixed with comedy songs with as much swearing as you could possibly want to hear, but funny. I guess I should’ve known what to expect when he said after the sound check – “we are not sh*t, that was a sound check. Well we are a bit sh*t… ” you get the drift. Find out more on www.mundojazz.co.uk.
Over the Camb’s border in Suffolk the Maverick Festival from July 13 is one I touched on last year but haven’t been to before so it’s new territory. It’s kinda American alt country/roots music from both sides of the Atlantic. Now I have a The Orbitsuns leaning for this genre so I’m looking forward to it immensely, particularly a band called The Orbitsuns who are dark enough musically to stray from country territory into hellbilly territory, a place I really like …. You’ve also got Otis Lee Crenshaw… who? Well, he’s the alter ego and fictional uncle of Rich Hall the American comedian, a regular on QI. That in itself should be a blast. Overall the festival has everything from bluegrass to American folk and rockin’ country. Lots of people I know are quickly getting into the new wave of young American artists that have veered away from the saccharine-laden country and western from the past and appreciate some of the fine talent that the likes of the Maverick Festival bring you. Add to that the beautiful Easton Farm Park with ponds, old barns and acres of space and you have what promises to be a fantastic weekend. Another great feature of the festival is the Tepee Village, 15 tepee’s set up in their own meadow just waiting to be hired out by you for the weekend… I can almost hear the train whistle blowing down the tracks, as a searing fiddle tears up a tune in the night… www.maverickfestival.co.uk for all the info you need, £60 does the weekend – bargain! Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
For ten years, local brother and sister team – Colin Hodgkinson and Hannah Hackett have put on the Steamin’ Blues gig at the Nene Valley Railway. Hannah is a senior manager at NVR and Colin is an internationally renowned bass guitarist, ranked one of the best in the world. If you’ve never come across him Google him and see his history – amazing! This year’s Steamin’ Blues XI on June 18 has now been finalised and sees Colin perform with some icons of the blues world – Dave Kelly, Maggie Bell, Zoot Money, Frank Diez & Colin Allen. They call themselves BBQ – the British Blues Quintet. As ever, a steam-hauled train (with an allimportant bar!) will be available to pick you up and drop you off if you live in the Peterborough area. Peterborough’s Prodigy, Gizz Butt, is always a man with a project. His latest is a very personal journey, because as a young budding guitarist, Gizz was influenced massively by The Beatles.
The gig, in a marquee adjacent to Wansford Station, kicks off at 8pm where there’s a bar serving real ale and a food stall.
That’s why on May 28 at Charters on the Town Bridge, we have a chance to see Gizz Butt’s Blue Beatles perform a tribute to the Fab Four.
Tickets sell out really quickly, but if you’ve never been before, it’s a night not to be missed.
Some really exciting parts to the evening will see The Blue Beatles perform many of The Beatles greatest hits, and the entire contents of the Rubber Soul album played back to back. They also plan a blues set, and just as the evening winds down and we all prepare to go home, Gizz and colleagues will perform an acoustic set walking around Charters, playing at the tables serenading the audience.
For further details or to book please contact Hannah at Nene Valley Railway on 01780 784444.
I spoke to Gizz during a break from a recording session in a London studio, and he told me that Beatles music was very personal to him – “It relates to my life growing up and it’s all deeply rooted in me.” So why pick the Rubber Soul album in particular? Gizz explained – “I go through phases of my favourite album but Rubber Soul has always been there at the top. It started with Nowhere Man, which together with Eleanor Rigby, had the biggest impact on me. It contains the most perfect harmonies at the beginning of the song and I just felt it was pure genius. So as Nowhere Man came from Rubber Soul, I bought the album, and I couldn’t believe my ears! It was the start of The Beatles experimental era, and to me is the marker for the beginning of rock music.” High acclaim indeed! The line-up of the Blue Beatles is Gizz Butt, Fozzy Dixon, James Cluer and Simon Martin with a little help from friends John Moseley, Ray Stockton and Jack Doherty. With that array of talent it’s going to be a night to remember at Charters, particularly the sight of Gizz serenading you!
The Cherry Tree’s well known for staging some great local bands and some fantastic charity events. On May 28 they bring together both with the Tyler Maxwell Fundraising Bands Day. Notable names on the line-up include The Replicas, The Black Marias, The Spirit, The Loyed as well as Children of the Revolution, Storm, Zeb Roots and Crash ‘n’ Burn. Even better it’s all free which means you can dig even deeper and drop your dosh in the collection buckets. Tyler has cerebral palsy and urgently needs treatment so you can enjoy a cracking live music event and know you’re doing your bit at the same time. It’s on from 1pm – 11.30pm both inside and out. Call Corky on 07759 777132 for details.
I’ve just seen the latest band schedule for the Bourne Festival and to say it’s an impressive line-up is an understatement! The festival is organised by Bourne & District Round Table 896 and runs from June 3 – 5 on the Wellhead field with a beer festival as well. However, the music stage for me will be worth taking in. Here’s the latest schedule:
Friday June 3 7.15pm The Precious20 8.15pm Hooker 9.45pm The Replicas Saturday June 4 12.15pm Power Surge 1.15pm Loose Rocket 2.15pm The Soul Solution 3.15pm Retrolux 4.30pm The Tunnel 5.30pm The Flex 7.15pm The Overdubs 8.15pm Copyright 9.45pm Doctor and the Medics Sunday June 5 12.15pm Battle of The U18’s Bands Winner! 1.15pm Saturday Night Special 2.15pm Circa73 3.15pm Children of the Revolution 4.30pm Brotherhoods Roundabout 5.30pm The Re-entrants 7.15pm Lime Shark 8.15pm The Almaboobies 9.45pm Greendate That’s 21 bands appearing in three days and with lots of real ale and draught cider available and only a £2 entry fee each day, the Bourne Festival is sure to attract a big attendance. www.bournefestival.com

PUB GUIDE News ADDISON ARMS WINS AWARD!
The Addison Arms in Glatton has received some exciting news recently. They’ve been given the most improved pub award, presented by the Huntingdon branch of CAMRA. Since owners Ian and Michelle Gamblin took over, they’ve focused on sourcing local real ales and guest beers from within 35 miles. The regulars love the local brews, including the three most popular ones – Grainstore, Digfield and Glebe Farm, as well as the Peterborough based Oakham Ales. Ian and Michelle have been keen CAMRA members for many years, and even met each other at the Peterborough Beer Festival – ahh! So next time you fancy a relaxing evening with a chilled brew head 10 minutes down the road from the hustle and bustle of the city centre to the Addison Arms. Well done guys!
The Boro Bar • LIVE music every Friday & Saturday • Karaoke Thursday's • Live Sports on Jumbo screens • Real Ales • Pool, Darts and Poker • Food (served mon-fri 11.30-3.30), Sunday Dinners 12-4, • Football menu during live matches • FREE FUNCTION ROOM HIRE I’ve visited the lovely Stamford Corn Exchange a few times since its reopening and it really has a great atmosphere. It’s a good place to see a seated music show and there are a couple of opportunities to try it for yourself in June. Firstly for fans of Brit Pop there’s Cool Britannia on Friday June 3. The show celebrates one of the most innovative periods of the British music scene. Cool Britannia are a four-piece band which feature ESP’s very own Matt Zilch (Stamford Calling) – so much talent in one so young! They bring an energetic two hour show to Stamford with the greatest hits of Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers and the modfather himself, Paul Weller. Then on June 18, the UK's longest running Guns N Roses tribute band visit Stamford. Over the last nine years Guns 2 Roses have taken the UK and Europe by storm as the biggest and most authentic tribute to the originals. During this time they’ve performed to thousands the world over, and even live on stage with actual members of the original band. Guns 2 Roses play all the hits and then some from all the albums including: Welcome To The Jungle, November Rain, Paradise City, Sweet Child Of Mine. All those rock anthems without the irritation of Axl! Could be a good night. Tickets for both nights are from Stamford Corn Exchange on 01780 766455.
