FIGHTSTAR @ THE CRESSET Charlie (from Busted) brings his rock band Fightstar to The Cresset in Bretton on April 24. VERVE UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT A big welcome to the pub world goes out to Sian and Danny who recently took over the helm at Verve on Church Street. They’ve already refurbished it and have revamped the menu, serving fresh home-cooked food. The weekends should be a blast, they have a 5am license with DJ’s on both nights. If Karaoke is your thing then Thursday is the night to be seen there. Good luck guys, Verve is a key venue in the city and it’ll be good to see it prosper.
FROM FIDDLING TO SPORT The former Fiddlers Elbow venue on King Street has had a couple of alter egos over the past year, so it’s good to hear that a more permanent change is on the cards. It opens mid March as the Peterborough Sports Lounge. Sky Sports and Setanta will be installed so you can watch just about every event that’s screened. It won’t be just footy either, expect rugby, cricket, tennis, the whole lot and you’ll be able to sit in comfort as well. Leather seats and sumptuous décor will be the norm as well as great food and a pavement seating area for the summer days…now all we need is for England to qualify for the World Cup and the cricket team to win the Ashes!

IT’S BBC BREAKFAST FOR PAUL! Local guy Paul Stainton has been standing in on the BBC’s Peterborough Breakfast Show on Radio Cambridgeshire since Andy Burrows moved on, but now he’s to become a permanent fixture! If you like a more speech based show with a little witty banter, plenty of interviews and in-depth news on the city Paul’s your guy. Paul started out on Hereward FM but then went on to join the Beeb and despite later travelling the world for BBC Sport, Paul never left the Peterborough area. He’s the man who brought Posh commentary to the airwaves in 1995 and since then has interviewed a myriad of sports stars including the likes of David Beckham.
POSH UPDATE Peterborough United boosted their squad ahead of a hectic schedule of fixtures by signing Lee Frecklington and Ben Wright, but with the winter weather playing havoc up and down the country, Darren Ferguson’s men know they have to be at their best to maintain their position in Coca-Cola League One. With two fixtures falling victim to the dodgy weather in early February, Posh now face a battle to squeeze all their fixtures in, but on paper, the games in March are mouth-watering with Northampton Town and Leicester City both visiting London Road.
Paul told ESP - “The show aims to be predictably unpredictable and deliver Peterborough’s news, asking the questions nobody else dare (and nobody else would think of!) whilst putting a smile on the face of the city every weekday morning.”

Meanwhile the club tells us they’d like to thank all the dedicated supporters who took time out to help clear the London Road pitch ahead of the clash with Yeovil Town last month. Volunteers with shovels descended on the stadium to help clear snow from the surface and the surrounding areas and it was very much appreciated.
BEER FEST… COMING SOON! One we’re all getting excited about is the Annual Easter Beer Festival at Charters with 50+ Real Ales we’ll be spoilt for choice. The boat on the river always has a great range of Real Ales but this is a real highlight for beer fans so get down there Thursday April 9 – Monday April 13. As ever there’ll be some great entertainment to enjoy while you’re supping a few with The One Eyed Cats on Friday April 10 and The Dirty Robbers on Saturday April 11. Hic!

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL NIGHT We hear two local promoters are putting their blue suede clad feet forward with a couple of cracking events in March. On Saturday March 14 Big Phil of Roosters Rock ‘n’ Roll hosts the legendary Mojo Kings at the Danish Invader pub in Stamford. Support comes from DJ’s Poor Boy Paul and Mama Guitar. On the same night, and what could become a regular event, is Johnny Be-good’s new night at The Boy’s Head. If it works out and he gets

ALPINE STAR AT TAZ! The city’s biggest motorcycle dealer Taz tells us they’ve just been approved as a dealer for Alpine Star biker clothing, there is only one other in the country, and not as big as the Taz selection. To accommodate the new addition the guys have revamped the showroom and now have their scooter section on the second floor… are they crazy? However, they do assure us it’s not a problem getting them down if you want a test ride. So if you’re bored any weekend have a ride over and check out the new layout and get tempted by the Alpine Star range.
GET A BETTER JOB DAY Things might not be looking good for some on the job front but Lite Fm is back with their annual ‘Get A Better Job Day’ event to help. They’ve joined forces once again with Clarke & Tholomew and the Peterborough Evening Telegraph to stage this huge careers show at the Holiday Inn Peterborough West on March 19. Many of the area’s top employers and organsiations will be there all day.
FESTIVAL STEWARDS NEEDED Colin at The Plough at Farcet Fen tells us he needs volunteers in various positions: security and car parking; handy men, cooks, first aiders or bar staff to cover various music events through the year. They’d need you to work a five hour shift on one of the event days and in return they’ll give you a free pass to the event and camping, pint of beer after your shift and a meal. Keeping you up-to-date with the latest gossip POINT7PISTOL’S NEW EP LAUNCH PARTY Battle of the Bands champions Point7Pistol have been in touch and tell us they’re launching their new EP ‘Aphelion’ with a gig on Saturday March 7 at Radius in Peterborough. The three-track EP was recorded in the grungy rockers’ traditional, raw, live style in just one day at Market Deeping’s Jigsaw Studios, with local producer Tom Savage at the helm. The gig at Radius (above The Solstice) starts at 9pm and the party will carry on in the hands of DJs Sleepwalker and Nutko. Doors open from 7.30pm ‘til1am. As well as the CD at £3 each the band will also be offering all three tracks in MP3 format at £1 so take along your USB sticks. DANCE-A-THON WILL BE BACK Sue Ryder Care decided to postpone February’s Dance-a-thon fundraising event… but the good news is it will be back later in the year. Although there was loads of interest the charity needed more people to preregister and guarantee their involvement in order for it to go ahead. Event organiser Sara-Jane Little told ESP - “I really wanted to create the right atmosphere and a busy event with lots of people is what I was aiming for. I want to thank everybody who has helped me with this so far and stress that the Dance-a-thon will be back!” Anybody interested should keep their eyes peeled for more info and updates. If you can’t wait to help support the local hospice at Thorpe Hall in Peterborough, then upcoming events include the 5k Fun Run in Ferry Meadows on March 22 and the Midnight Walk on May 16. DRAGON MAKES A WISH! Local people in Werrington have helped raised a massive £2,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation which we reckon is pretty good going. It all started out as a handful of donations from family and friends after the death of Ken Blundell last November and turned into a community spirited fundraising campaign. His son Rod Blundell and other regulars at the Dragon Pub, in Hodgson Avenue, Werrington teamed up to raise funds for the children’s charity. The Make-A-Wish Foundation works hard all year round granting magical wishes to children fighting life threatening illnesses. On a recent holiday The Dragon’s Landlord Janek Scutela and his wife Jackie were at Disneyland, Florida where they saw first-hand the joy MAW brought to some children who were visiting the theme park. Sadly, on their return they learnt of Ken’s death and decided to do whatever they could to help, including a quiz night, collection tins on the bar and even teamed up with band members from The Nuggets to raffle off specially printed ‘Nuggets @ The Dragon’ T-shirts on New Year’s Eve, following the bands live gig. “We have now taken on MAW as our charity for 2009 and are currently putting together ideas for our future fundraising events,” Janek added.
ALL CHANGE AT HAIR@89 Karen and her team at the Hair@89 salon in Market Deeping have relocated premises from Godsey Lane to Douglas Road, still in Market Deeping but just a bigger and more modern place. Karen told ESP – “After seven years in the old place we thought it was time for a much needed change.” The new place looks fab and is having an open evening in March for all old and new customers, just give the girls a ring on 01778 347621 to find out time and date.

STONES IN HIS POCKETS West End hit, ‘Stones in his Pockets’ touches down at the Key Theatre on March 30 – April 1. This heart-stirring comedy’s an award-winner and was loved by the critics. It tells the story of what happens when a major Hollywood film studio descends on a rural village in Ireland and the demand for extras is huge. Two guys brilliantly bring to life 15 different characters and it was described as ‘Very Irish and very funny’ by the Irish Times. It’s a scream so get your tickets soon! Tickets are £17. BAG LADY Clive Read's brand new comedy play ‘Mrs Bags’ (What is her secret?) is to be performed by The Revellers Musical & Dramatic Society at Peterborough Indoor Bowls Club from Tuesday March 31 until Friday April 3. It’s the latest in a long line of very successful Supper Theatre plays. CRAZY FOR YOU @ THE KEY The Westwood Muscial Society bring the Gershwin classic ‘Crazy for You’ to The Key Theatre on March 24 – 28. It’s a high energy musical the group had great success with a few years back and is set in both New York and Deadrock in the Wild West. The cowboy town is in for a big shock when the sassy New York showgirls roll into town and begin a rollercoaster of mistaken identity and plot twists. Take Away ‘Tastes of the Orient’
MASTERS OF THE MUSICALS The best of the West End and Broadway comes to Peterborough on April 3 with the ‘Masters of the Musicals’ performing at The Key. If you love the tunes from great shows like Grease, Mama Mia and Les Miserables you’ll hear them belted out big style by some cracking singers. A CHRISTIE RIDDLE The Agatha Christie Theatre Company’s already staged some great versions of the famous crime mysteries and return to The Key with ‘Spider’s Web’ on Monday March 16 – Saturday March 21. this one stars Dennis Lil from Outside Edge, Melanie Gutteridge (PC Emma Keane from The Bill) and Catherine Shipton (Duffy from Casualty). A woman finds a dead body in her living room which she tries to hide before her husband, a Foreign Office diplomat, returns home with a government VIP. As she enlists the help of other house guests she finds many of them know the victim and races to unveil the killer. If you like a little murder mystery action, this should do the trick! DARTS LEGENDS TARGET THE CRESSET The Cresset has scored a ‘triple top’ by signing three darts stars to entertain in ‘Legends of the Oche’ on March 6. Bobby George, John Lowe and Eric Bristow will entertain audiences with their darts skills plus hilarious anecdotes in two hours of great entertainment. It’s hosted by Duncan ‘Chase Me’ Norvelle and you’ll get the chance to ask them questions and a lucky few may even get to step up to the oche with them. CLAIRE SHOPS ‘TIL SHE DROPS AS SERPENTINE GREEN CELEBRATES TENTH BIRTDHAY! It’s hard to believe you’ve been reading ESP for ten years… and shopping ‘til you drop at Serpentine Green for the last decade too! Gorgeous Claire Smith helped celebrate the centre’s birthday by enjoying a mega shopathon with the £500 gift vouchers she was given when she won the Face of ESP. Serpentine Green was one of the high profile sponsors of the event and centre manager Dennis Baldry was happy to see our girl take to the shops and enjoy a prize that’s the envy of everyone! “It was great to see Claire spending her vouchers at the centre; I hope she enjoyed the day and that she has fun as the Face of ESP!” What girl doesn’t like to shop and of course Claire was spoilt for choice with more than thirty shops ranging from NEXT to Brantano, H&M to Boots, Tesco to River Island and loads more. “I was delighted when I heard that I could cherry pick any store within the Serpentine Green Shopping Centre and spend £500!” said Claire. “My only problem was where to start? Later in the year the annual September fashion show makes a return with models showing off some of the great new looks available in the centre for the winter and party season.

“It’s been an eventful ten years so far,” Dennis told ESP, “and during that time Serpentine Green has grown into a successful shopping destination that compliments Peterborough’s retail offer.” The centre’s certainly done well with awards for secure car parking and even for having the best loos! The 2,000 free parking spaces always go down well and you can even reserve a space online for free up to two weeks in advance. During school holidays they have various character visits planned as well as face painting and dance events at weekends. Plus their new promo team will be out and about during the year giving out all sorts of goodies – sweets, cuddly toys, balloons and more. “We’ve invested in and supported various community projects, groups and organisations including things such as Fireworks Fiesta,” added Dennis, “and look forward to playing our part in the local scene for the next decade too!” Something really special to look forward to is their charity Birthday Ball booked for May 1 with the proceeds going to four charities picked by the centre management team – the Alzheimer’s Association, Prostate Cancer, a local women’s refuge and the Royal Anglian Benevolent Fund. SAXONS PUT ME THROUGH MY PACES
WELCOME GAVIN You normally have to earn a mention in Man About Town so I’m sure our new Screen Scene reporter Gavin Miller will realise how honoured he is to be featuring in this page – a page that is skilfully thrown together by one of Peterborough’s longest serving columnists. I remember baby faced Gavin from way back at the legendary Herald & Post (someone should sort a reunion) during my ‘Peptalk’ days. Gavin is an absolute film buff. He talked films 24/7. He probably ended up marrying one of those spotty teenage birds that sold Cornettos in the aisles – and he probably hasn’t paid to watch a film in his entire adult life.
I had to be crazy but I went through with it and lived to tell the tale. I trained with the city’s American football team, the Peterborough Saxons on a freezing cold, snowy morning at their Stanground College HQ and managed to shred only one of my hamstrings doing so. This is not to say the warm-up session wasn’t thorough enough - it was - I was too arrogant to think I needed to properly engage myself in it. The story of me turning up to train with this great bunch of lads started when Saxons player Steve George (a guest on the Lite FM Talking Sport show, which I co-host) suggested I give it a go because it would be “fun”. How right he was. Of course it was fun turning up in shorts when everyone else had thermal leggings and tracksuit bottoms on. Of course it was fun losing the feeling in three fingers and two toes for nine days afterwards. And of course it was fun trashing my hamstring, which led to me having to limp around for hours looking like I had a turtlehead about to come out of my bottom. All joking aside, I did actually enjoy the cardiovascular training element of my twohour session but lost my way a bit with the simulated game scenarios. I couldn’t understand why we kept on having to charge after a ball that was kicked into the air and caught and then walk back and charge aimlessly again. I obviously don’t really get American football but I did get the buzz it creates and the sense of teamwork and dedication it generates among dozens of local lads (including a youth team) that have helped but Peterborough on the American football map. The Saxons are a club going places. But like all local sporting clubs, they’ll go even further with more acknowledgement, recruitment and financial support. Check them out on www.thesaxons.co.uk. Readers of February’s Man About Town will recall I was supposed to meet a Kylie-like woman during the month of lurve, that’s according to lovely local clairvoyant and astrologer Katie Lancashire. One thing I know about forecasts is they’re not always accurate with timings. So when I thought about it, I did meet a girl who’s roughly the same size as Kylie, has definitely the same bum as Kylie and she can apparently sing too – but this was a few months ago. Should I start sending wedding invites then Katie?
JUST FOR YOU MAMMA Whilst on the subject of last month’s column, my mum rolled up the magazine and smacked me across the back of the head with it. She wasn’t too impressed with me publishing a photo of our toilet (yes I live at home and proud of it) because it looked unsightly with the seat left up. I thought I’d make up for it by including this thoughtful photo of the washing up I left in the sink this morning.
BABY WIPE SALES SET TO BOOM? Did you know the word ‘gymnasium’ comes from the Greek for ‘exercise naked’? Couple this fact with another pearl of wisdom; you burn up to 26 calories in one minute of kissing. So why do we go to gyms clothed? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to spend money on baby wipes (to wipe down equipment after naked use) than on specialist gym clobber? And why bother setting yourself up for a heart attack on the cross trainer when you could just snog the fit bird next to you for half an hour? I say we take a leaf from the Greek civilization. They’ve got naked gyms and moussaka while we make do with Esporta and shepherd’s pie.
TALKING IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE I’ve recently discovered that my Oxford English Dictionary has been lying to me. The definition of the word ‘fine’ is incorrect. It’s actually a word women use to end an argument when they’re right and you need to shut up. ‘Nothing’ is also misleading. This word used by women is the calm before the storm. This means something and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine. Next month: What the words ‘five minutes’ in female language really mean.

BRAYS NEW ALBUM LAUNCH AT O2! This year has already seen the boys play at prestigious venues such as the Water Rats and the 100 Club, as well as boasting a swanky headline set at the magnificent Café De Paris in Leicester Square.
Charters Bar has received Daily Telegraph press coverage in the form of Christopher Middleton’s chosen pub of the week. He gave the converted Dutch barge a big thumbs-up in his column ‘Pint to Pint Our Guide to British Pubs’ after paying a recent visit. He referred to ordering a round of drinks as: “It’s like putting a bet on the Grand National. You find yourself standing at the bar asking for Deck the Halls, Crazy Daze and Bishops Farewell.” His jovial comment was made in relation to the sheer volume of different named visiting real ales that Charters pride themselves on. Well done guys and thanks Mr Middleton for highlighting one of dozens of places we in Peterborough are very proud of.
We at ESP have our Christmas party in January and every year it’s the same. Andy and Steve down pints and stare at the birds while I mingle with the birds. Guys, put the pints down, I can help. Route 66 It’s true what they say ‘One cannot live off bread and water alone’. The same, I guess could be said of cars. Strange comparison I know but in the same way as us humans need regularly filling up, cars can’t run on thin air… as I unfortunately found out, twice – D’oh! Last month, having managed to make it to the petrol station (on the A1 services, near where I work) in one piece, fuel tank on minus zero fuel, it reminded me of a previous time when I had thought cars ran on thin air! After making like a stunt driver a la ‘The Italian Job’ by dodging lorries and cars, slamming my hazards on twice, kangarooing (didn’t think it possible for KA’s to do 0 – 60 mph in 1 second - hair raising!) with my friend tailgating me in the event that I had to abandon my car, I arrived at destination ‘humble pie city’. My friend, Catherine, found it absolutely hilarious having watched my strained journey from the safety of her car. I, on the other hand, did not. Kicking myself – yes. Laughing – no (though I knew I’d see the funny side one day). You’re supposed to learn by your mistakes but as I had bombed into town earlier that day in my lunch break, with my music blaring on the way to Lite FM (as I do every Wednesday lunchtime), I was completely unaware that my fuel light was on and had been for centuries! I’d made a vow not to let my petrol run low ever again after a previous nightmare. On that dreaded day, I’d set about picking up an important business guest from the train station. Our company Mercedes, for journeys of this nature, was otherwise engaged, then there were no pool cars available and time was ticking by – uh oh! The only option left was to take my little KA. Having already accepted I was going to be late, I then realised I had no petrol. ‘I’ll be fine if I drive slowly’ I thought as I cast my mind back to an episode of Top Gear where they drove ‘x’ miles on minus ‘x’ fuel - good clutch control making it possible. Off I went, at 30 mph, in fifth gear. Jeremy Clarkson I am thankfully not, but kangarooing down the road I absolutely was.

My business guest was pacing up and down the line of taxis at the station when I arrived. Blaming the horrendous traffic for my lateness, we set about the return journey and my guest was soon enquiring why I was driving 40 mph on a dual carriageway. “You preserve much more petrol this way, helping save the planet,” was my reply. This statement was true and false and the same time. True, because it was fact, though false because that wasn’t the reason I was driving slowly. Speeding up to 45 mph, I said - “These road surfaces are really bad aren’t they?” hoping that would explain why my car was now kangarooing every couple of seconds. As lies don’t really sit well with me, I nervously began to talk again (I am a regular chatterbox at times). “I’m also running very low on petrol,” I blurted out. Within seconds, he’d reached into his wallet and was throwing £20 notes my way, which of course I didn’t accept – the reason I was low on petrol was not because I couldn’t afford it! Reaching the roundabout to the A1 services in first gear, I was on the final leg of my journey. I mounted the side of the roundabout as my car finally gave up, where we were to sit for what seemed like hours. In a second of sheer panic, I decided I was not going to allow him to walk ten minutes to the office from that spot and so hit the road again. I got him there, albeit at 2 miles an hour. I left the car slowly rolling as he got out and then took the car back to get petrol. I didn’t make it… One cannot live off bread and water alone. Wise words… very wise words.

However one person’s trash is another person’s treasure and I’ve now been reassured that all items are put through a thorough steaming process. What’s great about it is that you can get hold of classic pieces like a shift dress, trench coat or clutch bag for a fraction of the price you’d expect to pay! Like this black dress Jemima is wearing, you can’t beat a simple LBD. The massive bonus is that everything is a one-off, so you’ll never have the fear of stepping out in the same outfit as someone else. Not only can you get hold of classic items but you can pay less for instant fashion too. For example: floral prints, bright bold colours and nautical are going to be big again this spring/summer, so why not raid the

charity shops for your perfect summer dress for a BBQ or your hols? Or pick up a bold red skirt a la Cheryl Cole? It’s set to be a fabulous venture, as not only is there a huge demand for vintage items but it’s all for a brilliant cause. THE T-SHIRT WHAT I BOUGHT safety and welfare of the nine celebrities who are doing the The Red Nose Climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. Where would the world of popular entertainment be without the likes of Gary Barlow, Chris Moyles, Ben Shephard, Ronan Keating Fearne Cotton, Denise Van Outen, Kimberley Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Alesha Dixon? (A much better place I hear some of you say) - but unless the ‘Red Nose 9’ bump into Osama Bin Laden hiding up the mountain, I'm sure they'll be fine. But let's not think about them being fine - no, let's not do that, let's try and imagine for one minute that something goes horribly wrong, and they're stuck on the mountain. Would they be able to survive?
In order to do my bit for this year’s Comic Relief I've pur-chased one of their new T-shirts featuring the legendary Morecambe & Wise. Buying the shirt is the least I could do, especially as the next time you'll see someone wearing the same type will probably be when those two bumwitted idiots Dick and Dom wear one on Comic Relief night (Friday March 13). I don't know about you, but Dick & Dom wearing a T-shirt with Morecambe & Wise on the front is just plain wrong. It's practically sacrilegious, like Diego Maradona wearing an England shirt, Winston Churchill in an SS uniform or Aaron McLean going down Lincoln Road and getting an 'I heart Cambridge United' tattoo on his shoulder. My biggest concern over RND 2009 is for the

Well for a start - if they were stranded I imagine that Ashley Cole would rescue his wife Cheryl thanks to his boss Roman Abramovich. He's so rich, he's bound to have one of those teleporter systems like they have on Star Trek so he'd be able to beam Cheryl back to safety. But what of the other eight ? I think Gary Barlow would surely emerge as the leader. I can see Chris Moyles challenging him for this and they'd have to settle it by wrestling naked while Ben Sheppard referees. In the heat of battle, Moyles will choke to death when Barlow's Red nose accidentally gets lodged in his wind-pipe. It wouldn't be a complete loss because they could then eat Moyles by roasting him like a hog seasoned with the salty tears of Kimberley Walsh. With enough food to last them until Comic Relief 2011. They'd need to keep warm. Denise Van Outen could generate a lot of warmth by doing

COMEDY CLUB IS BACK I’m looking forward to the opening of The Cresset’s Comedy Club again on March 27. These nights usually have some great comedians on the bill and this one includes Rob Rouse, a regular on Channel 4’s ‘8 out of 10 Cats’. He’s joined by guitar-wielding Pierre Hollins and new talent Seann Walsh, who was a finalist in Channel 4’s ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ competition. The night is compered by cheeky magician Mandy Muden. Tickets cost £9.50 in advance, or £12 on the door. There’s also a meal deal where you can pay £17.50 to combine a meal, drink and ticket to the comedy show. New for this season is table service and hot bar snacks.

I'm sure many of you were shocked to hear the news about the fire at The Broadway Theatre last month. It's temporarily put the venue out of action and I know that manager Dave King's working hard to re-arrange and re-schedule as many of the shows as possible. Over the last five years, Dave and his team have done a fantastic job in bringing some of the country’s leading comedians to the city. Billy Connolly, Jimmy Carr, Frank Skinner, Harry Hill, Al Murray, Dylan Moran, Russell Brand, The Mighty Boosh and Mitchell & Webb are just a few who’ve helped cheer up dreary nights in the city with their unmistakeable humour and helped fill the theatre with a lot of laughter. Llike many of you reading I've had some unforgettable nights there and if I was to pick a favourite it'd probably be seeing Frank Skinner on the same night that England were playing a Euro 2008 qualifier at home to Russia. As soon as Frank walked out on the stage he spotted a bloke in the front row who was wearing a T-shirt that read – ‘YOU BETTER BE GOOD - I'M MISSING ENGLAND FOR THIS!’ He was - and so will The Broadway be when it re-opens.

SNOW BEFORE THE SUNSHINE!! Well it’s been an interesting few weeks with the weather! But it’s really getting to that point of the year where everyone seems to be longing for that little bit of sunshine and are starting to head out again, fingers crossed summer is just around the corner. I’ve been bobbing about town over the last month to see what’s happening as I will be doing every month for ESP and things are starting to hot up. NORTHFIELD’S GOT TALENT! Ricky from The Northfield’s pub on Drift Road has been in touch to tell me they’re hosting a ‘Stamford’s Got Talent’ style competition. They’ll be having everything from singers, bands ,and solo guitarists through to beat box performances and more by the sounds of it! It’s running from February 27 for eight weeks. With a 1st prize of £700 plus four hours recording time in a pro studio, then 2nd prize of £200 and 3rd prize of £100 it’s worth entering. For more info contact Rob at the pub. Also the pub’s running a menu called the ‘Credit Munch’ where they’ll give you a meal when you spend £3 at the bar. So for example all you need is to buy a pint of cider and you’ve got a meal!
BEN TAKES OVER AT PEAR TREE Another pub that has a new landlord is Ben Kruger who’s recently taken over The Pear Tree on Broad Street. He’s started doing live music on Friday’s (see the ESP Gig Guide for who’s playing) and had the almighty Houndogs playing there a few weeks ago and I have to say it’s one of the best places I’ve seen them. I wish him all the best with the place for the future.
FANCY A CURRY? Also on the new venue list for the town is The Indian Restaurant on Broad Street called The Bengal Clipper, I will most definitely be trying this place out when it opens in the next few weeks!

THE TOREADOR My ‘Pub of the Month’ is the fabulous Toreador, run by the very lovely Sally Wetherill (who was also one the Face of ESP finalists.) I’ve performed many a great gig in this place and when it’s packed there really is a great buzz. The bar’s named after an aspect of the ancient bull-run which used to start outside the café bar’s Me! doors on Broad Street in Stamford. It’s open 11am till late every day and drinks offers include £2.50 on all pints and bottles every day from 11am till 8pm. Wednesday night is Student Night with cheap drinks offers and Friday is Do Night with Do Segno playing Dance and RnB. Apart from having a great pool table, good fruit machines and a cracking jukebox, the staff in there are also the best looking in town… (Hey a lad knows how to get a cheap drink!) JOLLY BREWER IS PUB OF THE YEAR! Congrats to The Jolly Brewer on Foundry Road in Stamford which won the CAMRA Pub of the Year Award just as we were going to print– great going guys! This top award isn’t easy to win and this three hundred year-old pub’s obviously done really well to win over the real ale fans at CAMRA. The pub was presented with a ‘Gold’ award for ‘a much improved range of real ales and a fully revitalised pub’ a while ago. They particularly liked the pub’s strong community spirit their traditional pub grub and Sunday lunches and of course the quality ales. If you like a pint, nip in and see for yourself. I’ll be dropping by soon.

NO BABIES, JUST BOOBIES Just when I thought it wasn’t possible to hate Kate Moss any more (beautiful, loaded, talented, rock star boyfriend etc etc - jealous, moi?!), she came out with something to make even her biggest fan turn a pale shade of olive. Denying rumours she’s pregnant, Kate said that her boobs had grown bigger after she put on weight. “I just put on a couple of pounds and they went in the right place, isn’t it weird?” she reportedly said. Weird? No, it’s not weird Kate, let me tell you exactly what it is – grossly unfair, that’s what! When I overindulge a bit, it doesn’t result in my friends marvelling at my new splendid bosom and happy speculation that I might be up the duff; it’s more a case of not being able to do up my jeans, my ‘muffin tops’ becoming ‘gateaux tops’ and a flurry of gentle suggestions that I might like to join them at Pilates next week. Oh to live in Primrose Hill and not in the real world!

Questio ns include: “What would persuade you to wear a coat on a night out?” Maybe I’m getting old now, but I think the question should be more - “Why wouldn’t you?” I mean, apart from it being a pain in the butt having to queue up at the cloak room in Liquid at 2am, or trying to find your coat ticket when you’re off your face; freezing purple legs that look more like pork pie meat have never been attractive – or conduc ive to pulling. So remember what your Mum used to say and take your coat, you’ll surely “feel the benefit”!
IT PAYS TO QU IT Good luck to everyone who’s going to stub out their cigarettes and ‘tak e the first step’ (as this year’s theme goes) to quitting on March 11 for this year’s National No Smoking Day. Last yea r over 1.2 million smoke rs kicked the habit and this year, even more are expected to follow sui t. Just goes to show, all these ‘hard hitting’ vile images of fat dripping arteries, black lungs and clogged hearts that we ’ve all had to endure on all the antismoking adverts for yea rs, while many smoke rs obstinately carried on up, the Government had lighting missed a trick. This yea r, they finally managed thing that would drive to find the one huge numbers of peo ple to give up, but to be worked, but bringing on fair, it might have a recession was just a bit extreme!

CHARM OFFENSIVE? Enough already with all this ‘PC’ rubb ish that means the slightest ‘near the knuckle’ gag resul ts in the immediate call for the presenter’s resig nation, purely on the lonely complaint of ‘angry from Dogsthorpe’ or similar. I’m not saying I condone what Russ ell Brand and Jonathan Ross did on Radio 2 last year (and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, wher e have you been?) but I resisted writing about it at the time as I truly felt that all they were guilty of was being a bit inappropriate and just a bit daft. The latest ‘scandal’ came from up-a nd-coming newsreader James Dagwell. Having read out a rather banal story about a ‘soggy moggy’ cat who liked taking a shower, James cracked a gag about a ‘wet pussy’, resulting in ‘wholehearted apolo gies’ from a BBC spokesman for any offence caus ed. Offence? I’m more offended to think that someone out there had so little going on in their life to have the time to make a complaint in the first place, or that some one high up in the Beeb though that we were so uptig ht and Victorian that we needed to be apologised to. Yes the gag was naughty, yes it had connotations but really, it was just a good old fashioned double entendre, and the beauty of those is that they go straight over the heads of the innocent. I myself once got hauled in front of my radio boss for making a cheeky gag on air about being offered a ‘chocolate finger’ after a listener phon ed in to invite me round for a cuppa, saying tea would make me “feel sexy.” The trouble was, the boss kept laughing as he tried to tell me off and, after a lengthy discussion, in which I pointed out that the remark could be taken either way and no child would pick up on the ‘naughty’ meaning and ask - “Mummy, what does that mean?” common sense prevailed and I was off the hook. In this current sensitive climate, I clear ly wouldn’t get the same outcome. I just don’t get it, you know what you’re going to get if you tune into ‘Wos sy’ and no-one ever flicked over to Top Gear because of that ‘nice, inoffensive Mr Clarkson’. If it’s safe, tame telly you’re after, may I respectfully suggest you Sky-plus the Alan Titchmarsh show, and restrict your com plaining to council bin collections or something .

Caught in th AS EVER THE ESP PAPARAZZI CREW HAVE BEEN OUT AN ABOUT CATCHING UP ON THE ACTION IN PETERBOROUGH AND STAMFORD. Mike Harris manned the camera at the recent launch of the Saab franchise which has now become a part of the Marshall group based alongside Dodge and Jeep in Tyrrell Park. The ESP Dance Crew were part of the entertainment which also included free massages, wine tasting with AMPS Fine Wines some Clarins tips from the girls at Westgate House and singing from the Hereward Barbershop group. Over in Stamford Mike dropped by new food and music venue Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge to find the Stamford crowds enjoying some alternative Blues. It was part of a new regular Blues night at the venue run by promoters ‘No Country for Old Men’ and looks like it’s well worth a try. We like to party too and the ESP crew let their hair down in the new Tap Room at the Brewery Tap to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the magazine with some great Thai food. Pep Cipriano couldn’t turn up without his camera to this one and snapped our guys and girls in their party frocks having a great time! This private function room is great for any bash and after plenty of free booze the dance floor soon filled up… but some of the moves weren’t so smooth!

The original American Idol is bursting back on the scene. With a fantastic new single and new album just about to be released, ESP’s Joanne Quinney finds out what Kelly Clarkson has been up to since she’s been gone... It’s safe to say Kelly Clarkson has put her American Idol days well and truly behind her. After winning the first ever season in 2002 and releasing her debut album ‘Thankful’, she moved away from the bubble-gum Pop image and released the edgier sounding ‘Breakaway’ in 2004. This multi-platinum selling album saw the release of the massive hits ‘Since You Been Gone’ and ‘Because of You’, and two Grammy awards. Kelly embarked on a world tour in 2006, and having been lucky enough to catch one of her arena shows I can surely say this girl can belt out a tune and fill an entire arena with the powerful tone of her voice. It was believed that the star couldn’t follow the success of ‘Breakaway’ with her third album, ‘My December’ and indeed the sales weren’t as high. In 2007 she parted with her management which immediately caused controversy around the release of her third album. Critics believed it wasn’t up to the same standard and their opinions were strengthened when the singer cancelled her 2007 arena tour in the States and replaced it with a tour of smaller more intimate venues, due to underwhelming ticket sales. The irony is that ‘My December’ debuted on the American Billboard Charts at No.2 where ‘Breakaway’ debuted at No.3. If the gossip bloggers and doubters thought that her best days were behind her then they can now eat their hats. After joining forces with the producers who she worked with on her ‘Breakaway’ album, the rock chick’s fourth album is all set to be a smash hit. The first single taken from the album, ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’, is already breaking records, it now holds the record of the largest leap in the Billboard Hot 100 to the #1 spot, formerly held by Britney Spear’s ‘Womanizer’. So what exactly is the new single from the young powerhouse singer about? “It’s a non boy-bashing song, as opposed to the songs I usually do! It’s about a dysfunctional relationship, but at the end of the day it’s the differences that make a relationship special.” This does beg the question, why are many of Kelly’s song’s about dysfunctional relationships (‘Since You Been Gone’, ‘Because Of You’)?! “I don’t know what’s wrong with me!” she explains, “I’m really a very happy person, but I do tend to write a lot of depressing songs because they make for a more passionate feeling in the song.” This Miss Independent is also very modest when it comes to glamorous events and gorgeous photo shoots, and maybe a little too honest about touching up her photos on the cover of her new single! “I’m not that girl. I’m very flattered that people have called me sexy, but it makes me feel awkward. That is me in that picture on the front cover… photo-shopped!” So with the release of her fourth album, does she finally feel like she’s shed the postergirl image brought to her through American Idol? “I think I’ll always be entwined with the whole Idol thing. I’m proud of everything I achieved with Idol and away from Idol also. It’s such a different show now to when I was on it because no one knew what was going to happen. We don’t have any dates yet but keep you’re eyes out because you’ll see us on a stage real soon!” Kelly Clarkson has the world at her feet right now; huge album sales, arena tours and a massive vocal talent to boot. The future looks bright for this 26 year-old Texan. ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ is out on March 9 and the album ‘All I Ever Wanted’ is out March 16.

A FEW weeks ago it could have been sentenced to cinematic prison – but now the first major bigbudget blockbuster is upon us.
ANYTHING from ‘Bourne Trilogy’ scribe and Michael Clayton director Tony Gilroy should make you sit up and take notice.
The contractual ‘rights ownership’ dispute between Warner Bros and Fox has been amicably settled as the most eagerly awaited superhero movie since last year’s uber-successful ‘The Dark Knight’ looks set to ignite the big screen. If you’re not an eager fanboy dribbling with anticipation you could be forgiven for asking “who the hell are the Watchmen?” Well I’m here to tell you.

First and foremost, style won’t be a problem, as visionary ‘300’ director Zack Snyder is at the helm – using the same luscious special effects that made his last movie such an unexpected success.

Based on an award-winning DC Comics graphic novel, ‘Watchmen’ has all the pedigree to emulate ‘300’s’ box-office take – despite being devoid of a major A-list star. Billy Crudup (Mission Impossible III), is arguably the most familiar face as Dr Manhattan with Carla Gugino (Sin City) as Silk Spectre. Set in an alternate 1985, where superheroes are a fabric of society and the USA’s tensions with the Soviet Union are escalated, this multi-layered adventure puts the world’s fate in the hands of this ‘masked’ group of adventurers – as a plot to rid the world of superheroes uncovers a conspiracy with far-reaching consequences. They could be just the ticket to propel Snyder towards the top of the Hollywood directing tree if it lives up to the growing hype . . .
FEAR 2: PROJECT ORIGIN IN the last couple of years next-gen gamers have been spoilt with the endless onslaught of breathtaking first-person shooters – and ‘Fear 2’ carries on that tradition. The sequel to the 2006 hit original doesn’t quite manage to usurp the likes of ‘Bioshock’, ‘COD 4’, ‘The Orange Box’, or the recent horror FPS sensation ‘Dead Space’ – but is undoubtedly the best of its ilk so far this year. Project Origin commences shortly after the first one finishes, with Auburn being rocked by a supernatural explosion – and that pesky ‘freak job’ Alma up to her old tricks again. Any new FPS has an unimaginably tough job to beat ‘the best of the best’, but ‘FEAR 2’ – despite falling short of being genre-defining - is solid and engaging fare that any shooter fan should lap up.

After co-starring in the excellent ‘Closer’ four years ago, Julia Roberts and Clive Owen are once again teamed up as lovers – this time caught up in a high-stakes game of espionage as spies-turned-corporate operatives.
THIS is one role-playing gamecum-actioner that deserves a certain amount of praise for trying to be different – but sadly you’re more than likely to be ‘chatted’ to death rather than ‘slashed’. If you’re interested in Greek mythology that isn’t a problem, as Jason and pals intermittently hack ‘n’ slash their way through a hit-and-miss adventure that still has much to admire – despite a desperate need for tweaking in several areas. Every pro is unfortunately equalised with a con as chunky characters and beautiful background visuals are hit by poor framerate issues – and your progress stunted by static dialogue sequences. But it’s still worth a look if you’re intrigued by the source material.

SKATE 2 (PS3/X360) Out Now FOR you Sk8er Bois out there, you can’t really do any better than this follow-up which successfully builds on solid ground. This stylish skater will definitely appeal to the more serious fan compared to Tony Hawk’s efforts – with great skating animations, control system and soundtrack. There’s also a large landscape to explore to hone your boarding skills – but that’s sadly let down by a clumsy ‘off-the-board’ game engine that prevents it from greatness. It’s still arguably the best of its type – with plenty of challenges to make you come back for more – which makes this well worth your consideration.

Released: March 23 (also on Blu-Ray) THIS furiously-energetic sequel is instantly more palatable than the James Bond reboot ‘Casino Royale’. It’s leaner, meaner, and the shortest 007 movie to date, but ultimately when the dust settles it probably lacks the guile, finesse and all-round classier approach of Craig’s first outing. It seems the producers may have had a touch of ‘Jason Bourne envy’ as Marc Forster (Finding Neverland) ups the ante on a noticeably ‘shaken and stirred’ 21st century incarnation of Bond – continuing directly after the events of Royale in this first ‘real’ 007 sequel. Forster takes the emotionally bruised and battered British secret agent through breathtaking action sequences on a quick-fire trip across multiple worldwide locales – as Bond struggles to get the balance between revenge and duty. Still tailing anyone linked to the mysterious crime organisation which killed his first love Vesper at the end of the previous film – Bond ends up on the trail of ecoterrorist Dominic Greene (played not nearly nastily-enough by Mathieu Amalric) who attempts to reinstate an exiled general in Bolivia for a slice of the global oil pie. But while Craig still sizzles as Bond, Forster’s ‘wham, bam, thank you mam’ approach does lack a certain amount of humour and ingenuity – and doesn’t quite take you into the depths of Bond’s troubled mind like it could. This exciting new franchise is still only in its infancy though, and you can take solace in the fact this entertaining edge-of-your-seat thrill-ride is still a cut above the competition – bar Bourne – in the action stakes. #####

THE CHERRY HOUSE RESTAURANT 125 Church Street, Werrington 01733 571721 It’s a shame I have to write a lot of words to review my visit to The Cherry House Restaurant in Werrington. That’s because one word is all I need to sum it up: superb. I’ve gone on before about how a successful visit to a restaurant is all about the experience, the way it makes you feel whilst you’re there and when you’re talking about it to friends the next day. This was one of those visits. I’ll break it down for you. Ambience: Beautifully lit, warm and welcoming. You’re made to feel at ease (comfortable chairs made a difference) in an instant. This restaurant’s perfect for a quiet meal for two – not a place to take ESP’s Susan Saunders unless you can gag her from laughing (she has the loudest laugh in East Anglia). But there are separate rooms away from the dining area where you can exercise your vocal cords a little louder without being scorned upon.
HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR Imperial Bento on Broadway celebrated the Chinese New Year in style last month with some fabulous entertainment. The restaurant was packed with everyone enjoying the mouth-watering buffet menu and the cheers were loud as one amazing performance followed another. Firstly there was a wonderful lion dance which weaved its way through the tables, followed by an incredibly fast paced mask changing display which intrigued everyone and finally young Chinese entertainers wowed the diners with juggling and stunts. The atmosphere, hospitality and of course the excellent food all helped make it a night to remember. Come on guys, let’s see some more entertainment before next New Year – it really helps make dining out extra special!
Service: This, apart from a premature “Can I take your starters away?” was almost faultless. It was polite, served up with a smile and interrupted our conversation at the right times. The waitress, Laura, actually looked like she enjoyed her work and was impressively well versed on the contents of the mouth-watering dessert trolley. Food: Portions were positively deceiving. Although the food was served up in a pretty-like way, there was actually more on the plate than at first glance. Every dish was beautifully presented and everything served was either fresh or homemade. The nest of Scottish smoked salmon, celeriac and crayfish tails I had for starter was perfectly sized to line the stomach. The cream of celery and pear soup my partner chose was served hot (some restaurants fail here) and with croutons in a separate bowl as a perfect accompaniment. Main courses were even better. Fillet steak in peppercorn sauce and breast of Gressingham duck in a strawberry vinegar and pink peppercorn sauce. Both were cooked to perfection and accompanied with fresh seasonal vegetables that were cooked just right and served piping hot.

All of the half a dozen or more dishes on offer were homemade and incredibly inviting. I opted for cheesecake soaked in a Malibu and mango sponge base and my partner chose a to-die-for double chocolate mouse. Both dishes were presented with all the bells, whistles and colours of a Brazilian carnival and looked just too good to eat, but eat them we did. Toilets: I’d eat in these toilets if I had to, that’s how clean they were. They gave the impression they were cleaned daily and even the toilet roll had a quality about it that almost made it too good to use! I was so impressed I made sure not to leave the seat up. The staff at the Cherry House Restaurant aren’t in a rush to push you out of the doors, they truly believe eating should be a three-hour experience at least. These guys cater for weddings too and with an experience as good as this, I’d consider having my wedding party here if only I could find someone to marry in the first place. Pep Cipriano

Beware Moobs! Is your diet and lifestyle giving you ‘man boobs’? Come on guys, time to shape up… chemicals that send signals around our bodies. The environment we live in with its mis-mash of synthetic chemicals and hormones may just be having more of an effect on our own natural hormone balance than we want to believe. (Anyone can add something healthy into their diet). • Increase the fibre in your diet from – oats, vegetables, seeds, wholegrains etc. • If you’re a vegetarian – then be a ‘true’ veggie by using beans/pulses/vegetables and not always eating lots of cheese and pasta. • Eating more fruit – a couple of portions of whole fruits per day (avoiding the fruit juices or glugging back lots of smoothies). • Eating ‘real’ foods – foods that have not been altered too far from where they came, if it’s full of chemicals to enhance the taste then ditch it.

As we celebrate our ten years of producing ESP Magazine we’re celebrating ten local success stories. This month Sharon McAllister meets Peterborough’s newest star, Luke Pasqualino, skateboarding Freddie in E4’s Skins… It’s fair to say things have gone a little crazy in the world of Luke Pasqualino lately. Trips to LA, rubbing shoulders with the stars and being mobbed every time he hits the city centre for a beer! But hey, that’s what starring in a hit TV show does for you… This 19 year-old former Walton school pupil was according to his dad Pep ‘a bit of a handful as a kid’ - pretty hyperactive, so wisely his parents enrolled him at a drama workshop at Lady Lodge Arts Centre in Orton to expend some of that energy. It was there he got the acting bug and had his first role in a performance of Bugsy Malone, loving the splurge guns at age ten. That was it; he had a passion for acting and signed up with an agent. Once he left school he cracked on with as many auditions as possible before he eventually got his big break in a series he was already a huge fan of. “We’re all absolutely over the moon,” says his dad Pep. “We just had a feeling when he was young, he was just such a natural entertainer – the family entertainer really. We turn up at breakfast with morning faces and Luke will come down and shoot a joke and make us all laugh and put us in good spirits.” With Skins, Luke was suddenly thrown in at the deep end and has had to learn the art of TV acting and cope with a punishing schedule of early mornings and late nights.

“It is weird, it’s my first TV appearance and the first month and a half was all new to me, like how to hit a mark and camera angles and knowing where to lean and not to lean because of shadows and things like that. You’ve got to take a lot into consideration but I’ve really got to grips with it now and it comes more naturally.” Luke’s no stranger to being in the limelight having had a bash at modelling, particularly for his dad’s hair salon Image International in Spalding. But while the cameras weren’t a problem, starring as Freddie drifting through life in a dream on his skateboard was, as Luke doesn’t actually skateboard! “Part of it is me, like the small stops and little bits and bobs where you can’t use a double. I had a few weeks training on how to conduct myself on a skateboard without breaking my neck, but other than that it was a skate double.” So does he relate to his character? ”Yeah, I mean Freddie’s a really nice guy, I think Luke’s a really nice guy…” he says with a cheeky grin. “The other bits like skateboarding and the

annoying sister, the dead mother and the annoying father I don’t really relate to!” When the first episode aired the Pasqualinos held a big party at the house – “I think we had half of Peterborough over! El vino did flow.” So who’s his big biggest fan? “I don’t know… I think it’s my grandmother! Facebook’s gone a bit mad though…” Since Skins aired, Luke’s been causing a stir in bars in Peterborough and Stamford, regularly getting recognised with people queuing up to have their photos taken with him. Life has certainly changed pretty rapidly for this Peterborough guy, but he’s taking it in his lengthy stride. “It’s nice when people come up to you, it’s a nice complement. It’s a way of them saying they like what you’re doing. Everyone’s been really supportive, I had a few people come up to me the other night and say ‘I really like what you’re doing, congratulations’ and gave me a handshake and stuff like that.” Of course with all the Skins promotional activities he’s out an about in London a lot now and the invites are flowing for bashes like the recent Brits launch party – “I Saw Cheryl Cole and my jaw nearly broke as it hit the ground. That was good! “I’m backwards and forwards to London all the time. I go about four times a week, for promotion or the Skins parties we do. I get to catch up with all the cast members and it’s all good experience and good promotion.” As a teenager, working on a series like Skins with such a young cast must be a great laugh and Luke says the cast have really hit it off. “We all get on like an absolute house on fire, and that’s quite unheard of actually. We’ve been told on some series people work on they don’t get on because there’s a big group of people, lots of different personalities. But we all get on really well, and respect each other’s views and personal space so we don’t go too mad.” Fingers crossed for a fourth series of Skins but we may lose Luke to LA all too soon as he has his eye on a movie career, so if you see him out an about now’s your time to grab that photo with Peterborough’s newest star.

Met a few really good people and casting directors and there’s been good feedback. “It is brilliant and the opportunities are brilliant. I mean look at Dev Patel who’s just been in Slumdog Millionaire, he was a Skins character and he’s done really well for himself. It gives you the inspiration to follow in his footsteps.”

You have to go back to 1954 when Lloyd was six to learn how this natural talent was realised, he wanted to learn to play piano and pestered his mother for lessons which she duly obliged. However after a period learning scales, which Lloyd credits Lloyd back in the 70’s Lloyd today today as the groundwork to his skill, he realised he’d never be a great pianist Andy Slater knows his music and and asked his mum to buy him a guitar like his cousins had. The legend was born. QUEST FOR FAME AND FORTUNE Local Folk duo, Quest, need you! This awesome pairing of Thornton and Kat have been kicking up the dust at various heats of the UK Live & Unsigned 2009 awards – which are happening around the country – and have made it through to the regional finals being held at the Bedford Corn Exchange on the afternoon of Sunday April 12. Only a few acts can go through to the area finals and then onto the national finals later in the year; first prize of which is a major recording contract. Thornton told me – “Every band got just a couple of minutes and then they’d come out with a clip board dismissing everyone with just a ‘yes, no, yes, no’ to everyone who’d auditioned but when it came to us they actually came over personally and said the judges particularly liked us. We were gob smacked to be honest and it gave us such a boost!”

By the time he was a teenager he’d formed his first band, The Pathfinders with another city legend Eddie Cavanagh on drums and Ian Hatch on Bass. They played the likes of The Halcyon, Golden Fleece in Westgate and generally got good at their trade, however it was a gig at Alconbury airbase that changed things for Lloyd. “We were doing this gig and two black guys, servicemen, asked if they could sing with us,” Lloyd recalled. “They were called Al Chisum and Pee Wee Frye. They sang like Sam Cooke and Al Green which was what we were hearing from the States.” It’s evident at this juncture that Lloyd,
being half Jamaican, was in his element. They formed the band The Soulmates. “We sounded like what everyone was listening to on vinyl from The Stax studio’s, Atlantic studio and Motown out of Detroit,” - quite a feat in 1960’s Cambridgeshire! Lloyd’s first taste of success with the band came when they won the City Beat Championship in 1966. A year later they supported John Lee Hooker at the Gaiety in Ramsey on June 24 1967…yes, Ramsey, you read that right! Shortly after this Lloyd signed to his first record label, Blue Horizon working with the likes of Peter Green and Top Topham, a recent reissue of this features four of Lloyds tracks and is available on Amazon for about a fiver (plug for you there Mr Watson!) Back home in Peterborough he had now teamed up with Rex Gates and Adrian Titman and entered Melody Maker’s Folk Rock competition, unfortunately Rex and Adrian teamed up with Pete Carter and cleared off on the QE2 for six months! Undeterred Lloyd went to the heat and entered himself as a solo artist and won it. Then he won the second round the semi final and the final! The final was on the Monday at The Roundhouse and on the Tuesday he was performing on The Old Grey Whistle Test in front of a national television audience, fine work if you could get it back then. The Melody Maker that week had a picture of Lloyd on the front with the headline – ‘Listen….Lloyd’s won!’ How many other city musicians can say they’ve been on the front cover of a national music magazine?

70’S REVIVAL
I’ve had a message from Dave Palmer of Storm, asking me to let everyone know that they’ll be back on the scene soon, following his back operation. Having spent several spells in hospital, Dave is well on his way to full recovery and Storm are back in the practice room as I write.
There are some great gigs continuing at the Bourne Corn Exchange over the coming months, but of particular note is Saturday March 7, when 70’s tribute act Blondied will be taking to the stage. The Blondied show includes all of Blondie’s hits from the 70’s as well as Debbie Harry’s solo hits such as ‘French Kissing In The USA’. Blondied’s lead singer, Michelle Hendriks, is perhaps the most strikingly realistic Debbie Harry look and sound-alike imaginable, with many TV appearances to her credit.

But as this is the live music column, I’m gonna tell you about The Onion Friday Sessions, kicking off on Friday March 6 with Alright The Captain, Tapasia, Buenos Aires and The Hendo San Project; which all sound a bit Latino, but they’re not! Friday March 13 brings Bad Sandwich and Tim Eveleigh to the venue, both of which I’m really looking forward to. LIVEMUSIC Lloyd signed with Chrysalis after this and toured Britain and Europe supporting the likes of King Crimson and Roxy Music. Another 70’s musician making massive impressions on the country at this time was David Bowie who had created and was touring Ziggy Stardust. On August 19 1972 he did a gig at The Rainbow billed as the first ever Ziggy Stardust gig (not David Bowie) and Lloyd along with Roxy Music were the support. At the time it was regarded as the biggest Rock show ever produced and our man was part of it… During the mid 70’s Roxy Music imploded and Ray Manzanera with Brian Eno formed 801Live and asked Lloyd to join them. They produced a critically acclaimed live album called 801 Live, which is also available if you search hard, and played Reading Festival in 1976 in front of 80,000 fans… not bad for a lad from Millfield. These days Lloyd is happy with his lot, newly married after a whirlwind of a romance to a lass who was a teenage sweetheart,120 gigs a year and an adoring fan base. Lloyd is never one to show off about his past; in fact when you see him at gigs he rarely mentions it. He is a very humble man yet when he does talk about it, he effervesces with pride, and so he should. Not many musicians are fortunate and gifted enough to achieve what he has. “I have the Blues in me; it’s the black person in me,” a quote that rings true when you see him in full flow. As for the future - “Keep gigging, the next one is always gonna be the best gig ever!” And regrets? “I didn’t play more often…!” said with a tongue in cheek smile that only Lloyd can effect. Niels Kristian Iversen was recalled from his loan spell with Wolverhampton and quickly installed as the team captain, a decision supported both by the riders and the management. Panthers then snapped up Mads Korneliussen to fill the third heat leader role, after parent club Swindon had decided they wouldn’t be using him in 2009. Ex World under 21 Champion Karol Zabik had ensured he started 2009 as a Panther and the team quickly added Kenneth Bjerre, who would start as the team’s No.1 and Claus Vissing who was pencilled in for one of the reserve berths.

There’s no denying that 2008 was a difficult season for the Panthers, results didn’t go their way and then further Niels Kristian Iversen problems arose which later saw a change of club ownership. Now the boys are looking ahead with excitement as they gear up for their 2009 campaign.
With the doubling up rule re instated, Panthers again went after Lee Complin a rider who they had hoped to line up in 2008 and added Andrew Tully to the other doubling up position, a young British rider who had come on leaps and bounds with Premier League Champions Edinburgh. Simon Lambert was installed as the team’s no 8, and again he was another rider who has been used as a guest in 2008 and had showed immense promise when given the opportunity. It’s no brakes action on the track and excited fans are ready to put last season’s bad memories behind them so if you haven’t been to the speedway at the East of England Showground before – expect a lively atmosphere! When new owner Rick Frost stepped in the end of last season things changed quite dramatically with some decent results and a very different atmosphere both in the pits and amongst the supporters.
