LORD ROB IN GREENZONE You may recognise Lord Robert Walters from our ESP feature a few months back. Our upper class hero who has a house in Eye in Peterborough has gone from male model to star of male dance show Here Come The Boys to actor in a Hollywood movie. Look out for Rob as a soldier in Matt Damon’s latest movie Green Zone. Rob spent weeks filming in Morocco for the part of Roy Nelson and told ESP – “I’m excited, I really can’t wait to see what it actually pans out like. I think it’ll be an epic movie and well worth seeing.”

Great news to hear that the owners of Jim’s Bistro on Broadway and Jim’s Yard in Stamford are set to breathe new life into the former Beehive pub at Rivergate. Sharon and Jim Trevor are busily refurbishing the old pub which has stood empty for some time. It’s had a chequered history over recent years with various owners so it’s fantastic these guys are looking to turn it around. They’re pledging to sell decent food and real ale after a full face lift of the building. Hopefully in just a few months time we’ll see a thriving new venue in the city.
FIERCE ANGEL @ EDWARDS We’ve just heard that Edwards is hosting a Fierce Angel club night next month on Easter Bank holiday Sunday. SUMMERTIME SOLES Westgate Department Store’s launched a new range of Esprit shoes just in time for spring – inspired by lazy days in LA the collection is retroinfluenced an casual. As well as Converse-style trainers, 70s-inspired Tstrap wedge and fringed suede boots, the range also includes loafer-style flats which are next season’s musthave. The loafers hint that you’ve just stepped off a super-yacht and look great with skirts and shorts, or cut-off jeans for that real Riviera vibe. WOLFIE SUPPORTS THE DANIELS Looking for something to do on Good Friday? Head up to Stamford on April 2 and support The Daniels, (Stamford FC) where they’ll be playing Goole AFC from 3pm. You’ll be joined in the crowd by none other than Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams, World Darts Champion, who hails from Deeping St. James. He’ll be presenting the Man Of The Match award and is sponsoring the match and ball. He’ll be around in the Director’s bar before the match if you can find a way in, and Pete from Stamford AFC told ESP – “There’ll be a big crowd there to support both the team and Martin Adams!” Wolfie will hopefully be bringing his World Championship Trophy down, so you’ll get the chance to have a look at a rather impressive piece of silverware. Stamford AFC will be hosting their annual prize-giving dinner at the Lady Anne’s Hotel, Stamford on April 30, so if you’re a fan then grab a ticket. For more info, visit www.stamfordafc.net.
CALLING ALL BRIDES-TO-BE Wedding season will be starting soon and if you’ve got one of your own to organise, check out the Holiday Inn’s Wedding Fayre on March 7. SPIRIT OF THE ICE DANCE The fabulous Holdiay On Ice spectacular Spirit was another huge success and the good news is the team will bring another top class show, Energia, to Peterborough again next year. We can’t wait! It was the second time Holiday On Ice had stopped off at the EXEC centre at the East of England Showground bringing top ice skaters to the city in a show directed by Dancing On Ice judge and Olympic ice skating star Robin Cousins. Robin was there on the opening night to present a cheque to Stamford based charity Anna’s Hope which received over £3,000 when all the collections were complete. The costumes and choreography for Spirit were stunning once again and so if you missed out this year make sure you don’t make the same mistake again!

MUM’S THE WORD ON SOME SUNDAY IN MARCH
Proudly sponsored by:
COSTA DEL BALDERSTON There’s something not adding up here. The guys at Balderston BMW on Lincoln Road recently returned from a bike trip along the Spanish coast where they took in the best of Malaga, Grenada and Marbella on two wheels.
Guys, just when you’ve made it through the trauma and tribulations of doing that entire Valentine’s Day lark, the social calendar springs Mother’s Day on us, which is Sunday the…err…well it’s sometime in March anyway.
But I didn’t get an invite. I’ve been trying to work out why. I speak some Spanish so it can’t be that; I like San Miguel so it can’t be that either; I eat paella so again that’s not an issue. Is it, I wonder, because I ride a Honda?
Forget all those sexy size eights you’ve met over the years and take your mind off Chloe in accounts because your mum is the most important female you know and this means showing her some respect on Mothering Sunday (whenever it is).
Whatever the excuse the lads had a cracking time riding the BMW R 1200 RT Tourer and the latest R 1200 GS and Adventure models (made famous by Charlie Boorman and Ewan McGregor in their Long Way Round adventures) around twisty coastal roads in 20c plus heat while the rest of us spent most of last month freezing our bits off in a cocktail of snow, sleet, wind and rain.
Unlike ungrateful girlfriends / bones / wives / bits of fluff on the side, mums will be thankful you just about remembered where she lives on Mother’s Day let alone handing her a bunch of rip-off flowers that’ll be dead by Tuesday. So the subliminal message here is (as it was for Valentine’s), that it’s the thought that counts – and when mums comfort you with those words, they mean it. You don’t have to throw a load of dosh at your old dear but it’s worth making a point you spent more on her than you did the bird on February 14 (you’ll recall I parted with £5 – God bless Pound Shop).
Maybe it’s time I chopped my Honda in. The beautiful S 1000 RR (pictured on my sponsor credit) is tempting… For a test ride on this or any BMW machine call Balderston on 01733 565470.
Follow my Mother’s Day guide and you’re sure to be the best son mum could wish for. • Flowers are a must. The Shell garage on Oundle Road is doing a cracking bunch of chrysanthemums (throw away the dead ones) for £2.99. Better still, to save money, yank a few daffodils from the city’s Central Park and wrap them in newspaper. • Buy mum a packet of Daz Automatic. She still does your washing on Sundays (her indoors broke a nail last time she loaded a washing machine) and prefers old skool washing powder. • Give the missus a quid and ask her to buy a fitting card. The greeting card industry survives because of women. Men don’t need a card to tell it how it is. • A pair of slippers and an ironing board. Your mum probably hasn’t replaced either since 1980 so check out QD, Wilkinson, Matalan and Aldi for best deals. • Pinch a bottle of your bird’s unopened perfume from her dressing table (it’s that messy she’ll never notice) and give it to mum. Explain you can’t take her out for lunch because Formula 1 is back on the box, so you’ll make up for it by taking her to the Sessions House on Monday (hopefully the Mon –Thurs £5 carvery offer’s still on). • Pop to the Salvation Army charity shop on Long Causeway. They’ve reduced all books to 50p and there’s bound to be an Alan Titchmarsh book on sale and a Cliff Richard CD for a pound. Get the missus to wrap them in pretty paper and ribbon. The wrapping paper and ribbon industry also has women to thank for its continuous existence. Trust me your mum will be lost for words after all this effort you’ve put in. The icing on the cake is to text her at the end of the day with this Irish proverb – ‘A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest.’ But for those of you who may experience some resistance to my Mother’s Day guide, it’s worth noting – ‘The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.’ (Honoré de Balzac – French novelist and playwright). www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
JOE AVATI RETURNS TO THE CITY Fans of Italian-Australian commedian Joe Avati will be pleased to know he’s planning a return date to the city sometime in September or October. I’m working with Joe to finalise details so watch this space. Joe’s observational brand of comedy are drawn from the life around his Italian family (they originate from Calabria), particularly his experiences growing up where characters and traits he shares with us are universal in Italian families so it’s no wonder we identify with him.
KERRY’S BUN IN THE OVEN! Congratulations to our former Face of ESP and now WAG columnist Kerry Bates who’s expecting a baby with fiancé Chris Whelpdale of Posh fame. Needless to say in true WAG fashion the baby will be named after a borough of New York (Brooklyn Beckham) or an area of Peterborough. Welland Whelpdale has quite a ring about it.
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
CAUGHT IN THE
ACT! “It’s smiles all round as left handed Susan and Becca reach for Pep’s big surprise… ”
Weekend
How can you not love this word?! I mean, just look at some of the other words it’s associated with: rest, beer, curry, chlamydia, vidi-printer, sick, kebab, birds, Top Gear, church, sex, skint, sambucca, nipples, fry-up, lay-in, Posh, stubble, ride, hangover, Orbit, caramel macchiato, saliva. These are the reasons I love ‘weekend’ so much.
IS TWITTER FOR TWITS? Okay it’s been on the social networking radar for a while now but I don’t get Twitter. As far as I can make out, you update people about what you’re doing all day and they’re supposed to find this interesting. So this is what I did yesterday. How exciting: • Got up at 11am, had a dump and ate a bowl of Coco Pops • Hoovered the living room because it was raining outside. At that point I remembered I didn’t flush the loo • Went to KFC and decided I wanted to go out for a beer that night. I also looked at my car and remarked to myself how dirty it was • Scoffed a Cadbury’s Crème Egg at 6pm • Put my jeans on, they felt tight. Queued outside Latinis • Spoke to a bird called Kim who had nice legs but big feet • Went home (alone) at 2am because I was tired I get Facebook – you fancy a bird and use it to track her down. But Twitter is a bit like a broken pencil – pointless.
GOOD FOOD DESERVES CREDIT I don’t normally do this but I feel I have to mention some really good meals I’ve had at restaurants lately (full reviews of some will be published in the coming months). Here’s why Peterborough and the surrounding area is as good a place as any to eat out: Riva, Fratelli (Stamford), Bombay Brasserie, Toscanini (Eye), Cloisters (Stamford) and Royal Spice. And for a fab carvery at a giveaway price (£5!) then get yourselves down to The Sessions House for lunch or dinner Monday to Thursday (offer still on at the time of going to print).
BECCA TOUCHED UP Some of you (guys mainly) may have noticed / licked your lips at Becca Evans, our first-ever Face of ESP, in her stunning lingerie photos with Tori in last month’s issue. On quizzing Becca about the authenticity of the images published she told me – “Yeah there was a bit of touching up to smooth the skin tone and brighten the eyes.” Funny how her skin and eyes weren’t the bits I was enquiring about…
WORRY NEXT TIME SHE TAKES A LEEK Guys if she’s all of a sudden added a leek to the grocery shopping then be afraid. The British Leek Growers’ Association has told us that during the Middle Ages leeks acquired mystic virtues and if a girl slept with a leek under her pillow she would see her future husband in her dreams. That Tesco leek could end up having a lot to answer for. But leeks were thought to have aphrodisiac qualities by the ancient Greeks and Romans – Emperor Nero is said to have eaten leek soup every day to improve his virility. While in Chinese medicine the leek is known as ‘impotence grass’ – a natural alternative to Viagra.
CIAOS OUT:
Forget wining and dining in expensive restaurants, girls, if you want to share a bowl of Heinz leek and potato soup with me then you know what to do. pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk • • • • • •
‘Donut’ – you practiced the three-course Italian yet? x Rob and Rai – buon compleano. Where we eating? Gary – time to dust off those bags… Sam ‘chisel head’ – thanks for sorting me entry mate Petch – “let’s do this!” Laura – I’m waiting for that layered coffee…

at Peterborough Garden Park Handmade chocolates, artistic bouquets, new shoes and designer cushions – garden centres aren’t what they used to be! Peterborough Garden Park and its Van Hage centrepiece is so much more than just a garden centre – it’s a new shopping destination in the city. Apart from the incredible range of products available inside the actual garden centre (not counting the plants!) the other outlets such as Cotswold Outdoor, Past Times and Hawkins Bazaar mean this huge complex is another venue where you can shop ’til you drop. The row of units already includes Cotton Traders, Hobbycraft, Le Creuset, Maidenhead Aquatics, PBC Books and Pets Corner… and there are two more to come very soon. This £20 million investment has created 300 new jobs and despite the initial teething problems with parking and traffic (yes we were sat in it too!) this place looks set to be a real asset attracting visitors from far afield. Centre manager Eric Kirk told ESP – “The opening has been hugely successful and while we were disappointed with the traffic lights failing I’m very pleased to say that situation has been resolved. “The centre’s taken off from day one, business has been exceptional and traders have been delighted with the results. We’re already in very positive negotiations with companies interested in two of the remaining six units.” So, with traffic traumas over the ongoing developments at PGP are something to look forward www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
to. There’ll be a range of special events throughout the year including of course the official opening celebrations due in a few months time. As well as stocking some of the most perfect looking plants we’ve ever seen it’s obvious PGP is so much more than just somewhere to drop by for your bag of bulbs and compost! There’s 90,000sq ft of retail space set in a 10-acre landscaped site, so this folks is one seriously big addition to our fine city. The rise in would-be Alan Titchmarshs and celebrity chefs all banging the drum about growing your own is all helping make gardening the ‘in thing’ and the trend for outdoor living has made patio furniture and accessories as popular as interior décor. As soon as there’s a glimmer of sun we’re all out firing up the BBQ and you’re spoilt for choice for both plants and patio equipment at Van Hage… there are certainly some stunning sun loungers and patio sets we took a liking to. Roll on summer! Building work started back in September 2008 and Gordon Edlington, chairman of PGP has a smile from ear to ear as he surveys the end result. “We hope the high standard of what we’ve achieved here will see people travel long distances and stay all day as there’s so much to do. Come the summer the display gardens will be another attraction. It’s entirely different to what else is on offer nearby and there’s not another centre like this in the country, it has set a new standard.”
The Wisdom Wood running alongside the centre has been planted with thousands of daffodils and will be used by local school and community groups and there’s a children’s play area to keep little ones entertained during shopping trips. Gordon has strong beliefs about sustainability and Peterborough’s position as an Environment City and aspirations to become the UK’s Environment Capital really appealed when choosing this location – “We commissioned a sustainability audit with Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) and believe it’s important we do everything we can. Water is recycled for the plants, 800 tonnes of soil have been recycled on site and we want to ensure everyone recycles in all of the shop units.” Food at the centre is locally sourced with the Hambletons range of produce on sale and as no day out is complete without somewhere to enjoy a cuppa or some lunch you can choose from the Himalayan themed coffee bar or the food court. Another exciting addition to the parade of units outside is Andronicas world of coffee, up until now only to be found at Harrods, which will open at Easter and has already extended its premises in anticipation of demand. www.peterboroughgardenpark.co.uk

April Showers Whether it’s March winds or April showers the latest spring collections at Westgate Department Store should ease you into the new season in style. Last season it was all about block colour, now it’s more about subtleties of tone. Purple carries over from winter as a strong trend for spring, with ditsy floral prints adding a feminine twist to denims which show no signs of going off the fashion radar.

What’s that saying about holidays – a change is as good as a rest? Well the changes at the Holiday Inn at Thorpe Wood are definitely making this Peterborough hotel a new destination.
Feeling boxed in and fancy a little walk on the wild side? Why not go all Ray Mears and get out in the country and pick up a few skills. Come on – give in to that primal urge to learn how to make fire without a box of Swan Vesta! From a new pillow menu to more spacious executive rooms, guests will definitely feel rested while the excellent food and some great party nights should mean you’ll have more reasons than ever to visit the Holiday Inn.
Almost two years ago Paul Proctor took over as general manager and since then this hotel’s really stepped up a gear. It’s his third general manager position and you can see he knows a thing or two about making the place run smoothly. Paul’s been gathering together a strong management team and is celebrating acquiring AA four star status – proving just how extensive and successful the improvements have been. The relaunch has been another golden opportunity to further shape things up and now with an excellent restaurant manager in place the Holiday Inn’s gaining the right reputation with its diners. As part of the changes they’re now offering Sunday lunches from just £7.95 with entertainment from a live pianist, so you can chill out with the family on a Sunday afternoon between 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Don’t forget Mother’s Day on March 14 when they’ll be offering a three course lunch and a gift for mum!
The recent relaunch of the hotel has seen the rooms refreshed and newly decorated and from the smart new bed linen and towels in each room, through to uplifting fragrances when you enter reception these are just some of the little details the hotel chain hopes will make all the difference. Even if you live in the city there are plenty of reasons why you’ll be checking out the fresh touches. As the largest hotel, conference and events centre (catering for up to 450 people) you’ll most likely be dropping by for something soon. The hotel’s party nights are becoming regular attractions with 70s nights (March 19) and Motown nights (April 30) on the bill as well as wedding fayres (March 7 and September 5) and comedy evenings (October 1). It also hosts some of the biggest events on the social calendar such as The County Ball (June 11) and the Face of ESP finals (September 10). www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
Revenue manager Ellie Brady told ESP – “Chef Fred Muddiman has worked all over London and has held regional positions in the past. He has years of experience and has really transformed the food and dining experience. We did over 6,000 covers at Christmas and Karen the restaurant manager is delighted to have achieved the four star AA rating.” Let’s not forget the hotel’s leisure club which not only sports a swimming pool and gymnasium but the fantastic Zula beauty sanctuary, so you can work off a few pounds and then relax with some treatments. Both the leisure club and Zula are open to everyone, so that’s two more reasons to go and take a sneaky peek at the changes!

S Zilch Stamford Fact T A of the Month M F O R DCALLING A new addition to my column this month is my Stamford Fact of the Month so did you know…
For almost 700 years Stamford was host to a renowned bull-running festival each year on November 13. lt was abandoned in 1837 after a controversial but successful campaign by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Stamford residents defended this ancient custom as a "traditional, manly, English sport; inspiring courage, agility, and presence of mind under danger." It was argued that it was less cruel and dangerous than fox hunting!

TWO DAY RIVERSIDE FESTIVAL BANDS WANTED! It’s fantastic news that The Riverside Festival is to be a two day event in Stamford this year. Organisers of the popular not-for-profit event have just made a final call for bands and artists to apply to perform this year so if you’re reading this in time get your name down by February 28! I’m really looking forward to the festival on July 3 and 4 this year and think it’s fantastic Stamford Town Council have given it the thumbs up. The organisers are now working hard to finalise arrangements with everyone involved to make sure it goes without a hitch. It’ll mean there’ll be more happening and more chances for the whole family to get involved. Festival Director Cathy Sandbach told ESP – “We want to stage our best ever programme of music, arts and entertainment to mark our 10th Anniversary celebrations. To help us to do this we are particularly keen to hear from performers who would like to appear.” New for 2010 will be the Community Stage where local groups, schools and colleges can get a chance to perform at the festival. Cathy added – “We’re very keen to hear from local dance and drama groups, as well as choirs and other performers particularly from local amateur dramatic societies, schools and colleges. In fact any community based organisations who want to perform to a larger audience.” Roll on July – as ever ESP will be right behind the Riverside team so see you there! www.riversidefestival.co.uk
STAMFORD PAPARAZZI
Q&A ...with Ross Dykes of The Periwig
Each month I’m going to be grabbing a one to one with one of the local faces of the town. This month it’s Ross from The Wig facing the Q&A! How are you finding the economic climate at the moment? “Saturdays seem to be the only consistently busy day, whereas the rest of the week in Stamford seems a fight for trade due to people saving their money for the weekend.” What would you like to see the government do to help the licenced trade? “The government has year on year put the duty up on all alcohol which is forcing the licensed industry to increase their prices, which has a knock on effect on how much the consumer can spend on a night out.” What are your plans for the World Cup in The Periwig? “We’re planning on making it an immense affair, bringing in an additional three screens, including approximately a 6ft by 6ft projector screen filling our dance floor and offering a fully airconditioned venue ideal for watching England getting past the semis!” What does Stamford nightlife need to compete with the bigger cities? “I don’t think Stamford needs to compete with bigger cities as we get a big influx of people from Peterborough and surrounding towns descending on Stamford on a Saturday night. Stamford offers a great range of different venues catering for everyone’s needs and suffers from very little trouble with a great atmosphere.” What is your favourite place to drink in Stamford?
THE PERIWIG PROMOS! The Periwig’s been going promo crazy over the last few weeks, Wednesday nights are Pounded! with bottles of Carlsberg, VKs, glasses of house wine, Smirnoff and Jack Daniels all £1 all night. Thursday nights are Thirsty Thursdays with Carlsberg and Strongbow, £2 a pint and bottles of house wine are £6 all night! Then for Friday nights you can double up for £1 on selected sprits and my favourite, Jager Bombs are £2.95! The pub also offers a great lunch menu every day from 12.00 ’til 2.30pm with every meal under £4. Bargain! www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
“For a quiet beer The King’s Head or The Toby Norris, for a lively night The Crown, Central and of course The Periwig!” What’s your favourite thing about running pubs? “The great social life and meeting new people!”

HEALTH and beauty
ESP’s Charlotte Jolly has all the latest health and beauty news…
STUB IT OUT! Tried quitting before but gone back to smoking? You’ll be pleased to know that you’re not alone, but don’t give up on giving up. And what better time to try again than now? Wednesday March 10 is No Smoking Day which is a great trigger for you to break free from this dirty habit. NHS Peterborough Stop Smoking have teamed up with pharmacies across the city, to help make stopping smoking easier and more convenient for you. Throughout March go to any participating pharmacy across Peterborough to access free, confidential advice and support to help you break the habit, and you'll also receive £75 worth of free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), such as patches, gum and inhalators.
Join the many others who are taking steps towards a smoke free lifestyle this year with this help and support and not only will you hopefully live much longer if you’re fag free, but you’ll smell nicer, have better skin and save a lot of money. Here are just a few good reasons why you should be a quitter. • You’ll benefit financially – you could save up to £42 a week. That’s a new pair of shoes! • Better skin, hair and eyes – your hair will no longer smell, your skin will be brighter and your eyes won’t be so red. • Whiter teeth – smoking can cause discoloration to your teeth no matter how many times you visit your dentist. • Look younger for longer – quitting will help you avoid premature ageing.
• You’ll have more energy – your fitness levels will improve dramatically, making exercise easier and more enjoyable. • Better sense of taste and smell – your sense of taste and smell will be greatly improved as soon as 48 hours after giving up. • More time for yourself and friends and family – it takes nearly 10 mins to smoke a cigarette so if you smoke 10 a day that’s over an hour and a half you can save. HOT NEW STYLES AND PRODUCTS @ MICHAEL JOHN “There are lots of medium to long hair styles playing a big part this season but with lots of versatility,” said Mick. “Straight styles through to more wavy, spiral curls mixed with braiding or loosely put up for that softer feminine style. This looks great with the English rose style! There’s also lots of choppy, textured layering with low side partings and some strong fringes making a comeback.” On the colour front, as you’d expect, there are lots of new blondes coming out ready to hit the salons for Easter along with new duo tone reds using a darker red as a base with slices of a brighter, lighter red. There are plenty of new products at the salon this month but the hottest is the new System Professional treatment range which can treat two problems at the same time making it the ideal luxury treatment range. Prices start from £10 to £16.95 for the dual mask and infusion. Customers are clamouring for this and seeing some great results.
A new season means new trends, and that applies to hair as much as fashion, so I popped into the Michael John salon in Queensgate for a steer on the latest looks. Mick told me their new collection includes lots of new cap cuts and undercuts for brave types who just have to have the very latest look! But what if you’re not so brave? www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
Tigi have added to the S-Factor range with Wonderful Tonight, an overnight treatment containing Keravistm, a miracle ingredient which is proven to triple the strength of damaged hair. The other new product from S Factor is Spun Satin – a feather-light styling soufflé. There are some great special offers at the Michael John salon this month with the GHD Precious gift set reduced from £155 to £135 and normal medium GHD’s reduced from £119 to £99 including a free case! In The Elemis Beauty Room Steph the beautician has some great offers for Mother’s Day and Easter from Elemis facials to O.P.I manicures, Indian head
massage and reflexology. There’s the new Elemis Pro Radiance cream cleanser (£27) which comes with a complimentary 15ml pro-collagen marine cream and facial mitt, or if mum enjoys a soak in the bath you can treat her to the limited edition Elemis skinnourishing milk bath 100ml extra at £49. Peterborough pop star and Brit Award winner Aston Merrygold is getting ready for his big homecoming gig with his JLS band mates and tickets are being snapped up fast. Aston told ESP – “To come back and perform in Peterborough will be great, absolutely amazing. My mum actually told me about the Peterborough gig – it was a really nice, lovely surprise.” The JLS thrill ride keeps on going and now with two Brit Awards for Best Breakthrough Act and Best Single there’s no sign things are slowing down and as Aston puts it – “Everything’s going at 120 miles per hour!” Aston was stunned by their Brits success and admits they were up against stiff competition – “It’s been such a great year what with the MOBOs and everything we’ve been so thankful just to be there, but the Brits isn’t just urban music, this was full on, international as well as British acts and some of the biggest acts around.” Heart breakfast show presenters Kev and Abby announced the massive
news on the radio station that Aston and JLS are coming to the city on Sunday July 18 and told ESP they can’t wait for the gig. "We’re so excited that Heart are presenting JLS in Peterborough, we've been massive fans of the boys since they came on our show in the audition stages of X Factor. It's going to be an amazing day and the fact that Peterborough is Aston's home town makes it even more special." While it’s getting harder and harder for Aston to show his face here he’s working hard at keeping his links with his home town – “I try and get home even if just for an hour, but mum’s more than happy to come and see me. I speak to her every day anyway.” Demand for JLS concert tickets have gone through the roof since the Brits with extra dates being added and Aston
says we’re in for a real show – “Anyone who’s seen our tour will know there’s a lot going on and I’m not afraid to throw a back flip or two but we’ve got some new tricks up our sleeves. The tour’s incredible, we’ve had really good reviews. I think we’ve surprised a lot of people. “Now putting on a show comes more naturally, we start off doing several numbers and we’re not out of breath, we’re all singing live and nobody’s carrying anyone. We’re having so much fun and are really pushing the boundaries. “It’s a very exciting time for us, it’s all new and we’re trying out new stuff and experimenting.” Despite all the female attention, for now it sounds like Aston still has his feet on
the ground. When we quizzed him what he was asking his mum for on his birthday he had a very down to earth request. “A kettle! I’m getting a house and haven’t really got time to shop now so I’ve asked for house stuff. I quite like arty photos and retro stuff. I used to have time to go out but with the tour and our profile now it’s pretty much impossible. We wouldn’t change anything for the world though – when performing we’re at our happiest.” JLS’ Peterborough concert will feature a variety of support acts and kicks off at 5.30pm finishing around 9.45pm. Tickets are £28.50 from www.heart.co.uk/Peterborough

a part of this. We know we need nutrients for strong bones and teeth but we also need good nutrition to keep our immune system strong and in our mouths help in the prevention of infections and inflammation (periodontal disease). Good dental work’s vital but so too is eating a healthy diet which helps build collagen for our gum structure and to support our immune system, nutrients such as – • Vitamin C • Zinc • Flavanoids (compounds found in fruit and veg) • Folic Acid (found in rich dark green leafy veg) • Vitamin E… and much more. There are also supplements that may be supportive in periodontal disease but some that certainly get more notice are certain probiotic strains, Vitamin C and COQ10 (always take advice before using supplement).

Sometimes we feel we don’t have much to smile about. This time of year is especially difficult for some as they’re feeling gloomy due to the lack of sunlight, darker nights and less fresh air but as the saying goes – when you smile the whole world smiles with you. But what if your teeth are giving your nothing to smile about? Having just returned from a weekend seminar for holistic dentists I’ve been (as I have for many years) impressed by the whole body approach that these professionals take. They’re showing that an integrated dental approach can help your overall wellbeing and health. Our mouth is the top end of our digestive
system, it’s the gateway to our inner-tube of life and the rest of our body, therefore a healthy mouth will help support a healthy body. We have a world of bacteria in our mouth, hopefully being kept in order by our immune system. Good nutrition as we know is the foundation for health, and our teeth and gums are also
There’s been a huge increase in the tooth whitening industry to help us with that big pearly white smile, but remember having white teeth will not always equal a healthy mouth. Plaque that builds up during the day (sounds lovely doesn’t it?) harbours bacteria which can lead to gum disease as the bacteria release wastes that can affect your defence mechanisms, which may lead to inflammation and infection. Have you ever noticed when you eat a lot of refined carbohydrates and sugars your teeth feel rough and sticky? This is due to the plaque. By reducing these foods in your diet you may reduce the amount of plaque build up which breeds bacteria! So, it goes without saying, not only good brushing but FLOSSING will help keep teeth and gums healthy coupled with a good healthy diet to support your teeth, gums and immune system!
“Good nutrition as we know is the foundation for health, and our teeth and gums are also a part of this.” Keep smiling, and remember to visit your dentist regularly! Karen

STAND OUT STAND UP
THE LEGEND OF ST. DARRAGH’S DAY Every year on March 24 the whole of Peterborough becomes Irish for the day to celebrate the birth of St. Darragh, patron saint of Peterborough. Over 200,000 people either stay in their homes in a loyal display of self-reflection and belief or go out on the lash drinking Guinness and singing. In the past St. Darragh's Day wasn't really celebrated, but since 2006 it’s become one mahoosive celebration with people growing stubble, wearing sunglasses and hanging around with two bodyguards. Much of St. Darragh's life is shrouded in legend. For centuries to come scholars will be trying to separate the fact from the fiction surrounding his life and official press statements on the Posh website. It’s doubtful that St. Darragh was the first believer in Peterborough, or that he introduced the idea of belief to the city all on his own. This was probably a myth created by the Posh Independent Soccer Supporters Hastily Elected Auxiliary Dipsomaniac Society or P.*.S.S.H.E.A.D.S for short It’s more likely that there were already believers in the city especially around Oundle Road and Fletton Avenue who first experienced belief when Lord Noel of Cantwell ruled the city. A popular myth associated with St. Darragh is that he banished snakes, sorry I mean overpaid old footballers from Peterborough, however whilst there is some truth to this myth there’s always the possibility that overpaid old footballers will one day return to the city, either on a free transfer or on a player-plus-cash deal. But the legend of St. Darragh continues to flourish and whilst some of the facts might seem surreal or ambitious, never underestimate the power of ‘poshitive’ thinking. Whatever the truth about St. Darragh's life, you would be well advised to keep quiet about any doubts you may have about the saint. Peterborians will defend their patron saint with great pride and passion... particularly at 3pm on a Saturday and 7.45pm on a Tuesday night.
JOKES OF THE MONTH MARLENE'S MISSING HEELS I'm sure many of you enjoyed ESP's 'Burlesque Beauties' photoshoot last month with Tori and Becca. I don't mind admitting that I spent a good length of time dwelling on those pages when the magazine came out. And no, it's not because I enjoy looking at women in their pants (and anyone who says I do is lying) but because I noticed that a pair of leopard print high heels that were used in the photoshoot bore a remarkable resemblance to the ones that Marlene used to wear in Only Fools & Horses! I'm now looking forward to ESP's summer swimwear photoshoot which will hopefully feature Trigger's dolphin that he lost on 'The Jolly Boys Outing'. Go on girls, you know it makes sense… www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
"When I heard that the economy’s grown by 0.1% and that we're now out of recession I thought – 'Must've been that big bottle of Coke I bought last week'. Either that or Susan Boyle's had her back waxed." – Sean Lock "Men spend on average 20 minutes in the bathroom every day, whereas women spend 27. Although women never spend 27 minutes in the bathroom directly after a man's spent 20 minutes in there." – Jimmy Carr "People keep saying – “Oh Avatar, it's the ultimate film experience” No it isn't. When Sixth Sense came out you know that bit when the kid goes 'I see dead people' there was a bloke sitting behind me on the back row of the cinema who goes – 'That's nothing – I sh*g them'. Now that's gotta be the ultimate film experience surely!" – Russell Howard

PAPARAZZI GOES ON A PUB CRAWL! Last month the ESP Paparazzi went on a tour of the city’s pubs and bars. They called in first at The Brewery Tap, where the charity music night was in full swing – bands such as the One eyed Cats and Citizen Smith got together to help raise £3,000 for Unicef’s Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Next up was The Ostrich on North Street, which has live bands every weekend and karaoke on Sunday in the recently refurbished bar. Revellers can try a range of real ales and ciders, get food at lunchtime and try their hand at bar billiards, which is surprisingly addictive. They then visited The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road, a favourite amongst music lovers for years, thanks to the landlord and lady’s commitment. Popular amongst locals and those from further afield, it’s definitely worth a trip out of the town centre. The ESP Paparazzi visited on a Sunday and found the place packed for poker night They then made a stop at The Office further down Oundle Road – no, not the one where we write ESP, but the pub! There’s live music every Saturday and a family beer garden, as well as a poker night on Wednesdays, so The Office attracts a pretty diverse yet friendly crowd. Finally, they took a trip to The Cellar Bar, beneath Thorpe Lodge Hotel on Thorpe Road. This initimate, cosy venue is one of the city’s best kept secrets. It’s built a reputation for great live nights and karaoke so make sure you stop by sometime.
VIEW PAPARAZZI ONLINE All the photos taken by the Papazazzi crew go up on our new website www.espmag.co.uk – even those we haven’t managed to fit into the mag. The photos are available to order too, so if you find any particularly embarrassing ones off your mates, you can get a copy to keep!

KELLY’S LOOKING HOT FOR SPORT RELIEF Former model Kelly Brook, a recent star in Calendar Girls caused a stir on London’s Underground posters hiding her modesty behind two cherry buns, covers up considerably in her favourite Sport Relief t-shirt, but still manages to look utterly stunning! Gorgeous Kelly, who’s been photographed modeling some of the official range, says – “I’m very happy to be involved and model these t-shirts. It’s such a great cause and all the money goes to projects in this country and internationally.” Kelly did a special promotional shoot with current boyfriend, rugby star Danny Cipriani to launch the official Sport Relief t-shirts, exclusively designed by the Beckham family... including the boys! The Sport Relief Weekend takes place this month from Friday March 19 to Sunday 21 and it’ll be three whole days of energy, entertainment and events to help the nation rise to the challenge! To look the part you’ll need to grab yourself one of the designs which have been modelled by various celebs include Sophie Ellis Bextor and Abby Clancy and are now on sale at Sainsbury’s and TK Maxx. Rugby star Danny Cipriani says the one he modelled is his favourite – “It’s casual, relaxed, the sort of thing you could wear every day,” while Abby prefers the rock chick look – “I love the vest – I think it’s really cool.” There’s a series of t-shirts with one to suit everybody including one of David in a distinctive self portrait showcasing his famous footie skills. Now we all know Posh likes her fashion but apparently this was all a family affair with even the junior Beckhams – Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz joining in the creative process, armed with spray cans and a blank canvas, to create a unique one-off Beckham family collaboration. Each t-shirt features The Beckhams for Sport Relief logo, a combination of the footprints of each family member. “'Victoria and I are excited to be involved with Sport Relief again this year,” said David. “Our family had a great time designing the t-shirt range and we hope it will raise much needed funds for many important causes. The most important thing is that the money raised will make a genuine difference to people’s lives.” The t-shirts are all made with 100% Fairtrade certified cotton. All net profits from sales will go towards helping people living unimaginably tough lives both across the UK and the world’s poorest countries. They’re now on sale exclusively instore and online at Sainsbury’s and TK Maxx and www.sportrelief.com. So, been there done that, bought the t-shirt? Not quite. Now you need to limber up and actually get out there! The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile takes place on Sunday March 21 when you can set your own challenge by having the choice of running one, three or six miles. This year you can take part at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough, Polebrook near Oundle, Rutland Water or Hinchingbrooke Country Park and you can sign up for your nearest mile at www.sportrelief.com. You can be a couch potato for one night though and that’s to watch it all on the telly as there’ll be fantastic night of entertainment on Friday March 19 on the BBC. Coverage from the Mile events will be shown during The Sport Relief Mile Show on Sunday March 21 on BBC One, with those participating as the stars of the show – that could be you!

BREWERY TAP BACK TO ITS (G The Muddy Promotions crew have been a little quiet of late, but are set to return on March 19 with a Grassroots Spring Equinox Party at the Brewery Tap. Billed as a taster for the Grassroots Banquet Festival which is hopefully returning in September, the night features some diverse acts that are all pretty much guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The headliner is punk poet Atilla The Stockbroker – inspired by the attitude of the punk scene and The Clash in particular, he started off by blagging slots at punk gigs and soon got onto the John Peel Show and the front cover of Melody Maker. I saw him at Grassroots 2008 and it was one of the highlights of the weekend – he’s witty and mocking, challenging the establishment but retaining a sense of humility. Check him out at www.attilathestockbroker.com.

Other live acts at the party night include Gideon Conn, an amazing singer/songwriter, see www.myspace.com/gideonconn; Peterborough legends Freepeace, who blend genres to make a sound that’s guaranteed to make you dance, listen at www.myspace.com/fre3peace and Thomas Fox who mixes comedy with keyboards. Then there’s Thudbox who have to be heard to be believed, an eleven-strong group of percussionists who mix samba with a drum ‘n’ bass influence – hear them for yourself on www.myspace.com/thudbox.

FOOD REVIEW
EAST
Town Bridge, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 315702 www.east-restaurant.co.uk When seventeen of us descended on East restaurant for a birthday meal we found our table set and ready, were greeted with a smile and throughout the night the slick team at this city centre venue were spot on. The service was swift and our party enjoyed gorgeous food in a stylish setting. The food at East never disappoints so you know you’re safe whatever you choose from the diverse menu but some of us opted for set menus for ease. True to style the food just kept on coming with a minimum wait in between dishes and the standards were always high. This is fine dining indeed and takes your taste buds on a trip across the orient with dishes and flavours to die for. All cooked to perfection and beautifully presented the starters through to the main course didn’t fail.
The setting on the river with the boat nestled beneath the town bridge is certainly another huge plus point and East has a great atmosphere for couples or larger groups like ours. A few pints of Oakham Ales were downed – another benefit you won’t get at most city restaurants – and a great birthday party was enjoyed by all. If you haven’t tried East on the river yet there’s no excuse this month as the chefs have prepared a special set menu where four can dine for the price of three. Prices start from £17.95 per person and the offer is available lunchtimes and evenings (Sunday-Thursday only). Now there’s a great reason to get your friends together whether it’s anyone’s birthday or not!

PIZZA PIONEERS 27 YEARS AND GOING STRONG Business was great at weekends but customers weren’t visiting the restaurant in the week. So the idea of taking pizzas to customers was born! Unbeknown to them, they’d created the first pizza delivery service in the UK. A £50 second-hand mini van was purchased as the delivery vehicle. Painted bright orange and fitted out with a homemade heated oven, it was stolen the day after but soon spotted by an unemployed man whose reward was to be given a job as the country’s first official pizza delivery driver! Brother’s Sebastian and Tony Scibelli with school friend Stef Malajny decided to go into business back in 1977 after a five-a-side football game at their local youth club in Woodston. Businesses have been formed under less unusual circumstances but that didn’t matter. What did was a profit of £32 the young apprentices made after their first venture – a Tamla Motown night starring local DJ Roger Black. S&M Entertainments was born and the budding entrepreneurs never looked back. The next six years saw them corner the local disco market and promote events like the World Disco Dancing Championships (they secured Peterborough to stage a regional final) and lay claim to running the first kiss-o-gram agency in the UK. But in 1983 they decided to try their hand at the restaurant business. They took over Greek restaurant, the Kebab House (on the town bridge) and converted it into an Italian eatery called Papa Luigi, with pizzas – cooked in a log oven – being the signature dish.
www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
As the years rolled by Papa Luigi picked up regular awards from the Pizza & Pasta Association for business (franchised shops in Peterborough, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Huntingdon) and for promotions. The firm was recognised for being the first pizza delivery company to introduce ‘buy one get one free’ during the house price crash of the late 1980s. It was at this time when Frank Baylis and Abby Bahnam joined the business as a delivery driver and kitchen assistant respectively. Today they co-run Peterborough’s shops with their wives Anna and Val in Lincoln Road and London Road. Merging the two shops has ensured product consistency, identical menus and promotions
across our pizza-mad city (Peterborough is known as Pizzaborough in the trade). Papa Luigi’s always prided itself on using fresh dough and ingredients that are prepared on the premises each day. Even the tasty garlic bread mix is made from scratch. Pizzas are still king for the business but homemade pasta dishes are favourite meal options for hundreds of customers too. The shops are currently offering on collection only, lasagna or cannelloni with French fries and salad for just £4.95 between 11am and 3pm. But if it’s still pizza for you then the ‘2 For A Tenner’ collection deal is great value and so is
the take-away or delivery offer of a 15” pizza with five toppings plus a side order and a bottle of wine for only £14.95. A new summer menu will be launched in April with unbeatable meal deals and World Cup specials. A re-vamped www.papa-luigi.co.uk website is on its way too. DOING IT FOR THE KIDS coherent. We spent about 25 minutes calming her down and talking to her with a social worker and managed to persuade her to come back with us. “At that age and in that condition she was very vulnerable. The fact we can help someone like that who needs care rather than arresting is far more rewarding and justified in the circumstances.”
Tonight the Operation Stay Safe team are out and about on the streets of Peterborough. They’re looking to help young people and kids putting themselves at risk out late at night, drinking, experimenting with drugs or generally causing a nuisance. Sgt. Tim Archer and his team have headed out in unmarked cars but wear high visibility uniforms so kids are clear who they’re talking to. It’s not long before they come across a group with booze and Tim says it’s sadly not unusual. “We spotted a girl, only about 13 years-old, walking along a busy road staggering near traffic. She was clearly drunk and the older lad she was with, who was about 16, had used drugs but was more
Peterborough police were the first in the East of England to trial the scheme which is so far proving a real success. Police, social workers and Drinksense volunteers form the team and operate from 5.30pm until midnight. They run Operation Stay Safe every 4-5 weeks in areas where the Neighbourhood Policing Teams have highlighted problems or where there have been reports of young people gathering or causing problems. “This operation is such a simple thing – ideally it would happen every week,” says Tim. “It really does work and on average we have about two or three kids in vulnerable situations who we take back to the designated safe centre and then get them back home.” Once back at the safe centre social workers and
Drinksense step in to talk to the kids and Tim believes this strong link between the agencies all working together is the key – “We all focus purely on this operation on the night so we can be more thorough than a general patrol and have the back-up of the others. The kids know when we’re out and modify their behaviour and for some it’s even quite reassuring.” While groups of youths hanging about at night are often seen as being up to no good, one of the biggest concerns is the vulnerable situations they’re actually placing themselves in, whether it’s drinking and getting out of control or putting themselves at risk in a variety of other ways. “Young people and their parents need to understand just how vulnerable they are when they’re out unsupervised and possibly experimenting with drink and drugs,” adds Tim. “It’s all about talking about the issues and being aware. Parents need to know where their kids are and if they struggle to discuss issues like drug taking there’s plenty of information on the FRANK website.” www.talktofrank.com

Three years ago I test drove the C30 for ESP and loved it, so given the chance again I jumped at it. You’ll no doubt want some uplifting tunes to add to that feel-good factor and the C30 has fantastic surround sound so all your passengers benefit, plus there are all the gadgets and gizmos we just can’t seem to live without in modern cars these days. Sales manager Ashleigh Carnell says the C30 has unlocked a whole new customer base for Volvo with the majority of C30 customer’s new to the brand. At first glance it looks the same but on closer inspection you’ll see the front grill has changed with more aggressive headlamps to give it that mean look, and at the back there are state-of-the-art adaptive brake lights to warn cars behind you when you brake harder than normal.

The C30 has something for everyone, from the entry level 1.6s up to the 240ps R-Design T5. Volvo’s start/stop technology is second to none and has the ability to carry you over 800 miles on a single tank with free road fund licence! You can grab yourself a C30 on the road from as little as £14,995 for a basic model or the new sporty R-Design starts from £17,095. FIRE! IT’S A RISKY BUSINESS So the fire alarm goes off at work and amid the moans and groans people shuffle off reluctantly to the assembly point and shiver in the car park. It’s all a bit of an inconvenience along with changing that dodgy fire exit bulb and remembering to stick the emergency emergency action notice back up that fell down three months ago! When you’re busy running a company or working hard in a small business it’s easy to be complacent about fire risks, sometimes without even realising it, but since legislation changed back in 2006 did you know that you could now be the one who should be taking charge of all this? Risk assessments and responsibility for complying with the Fire Safety Order now rests with the 'responsible person'. In a workplace, this is the employer and any other person who may have control of any part of the premises, for example, the occupier or owner. Right now there’ll be a whole bunch of people taking a gulp because loads of people in local companies who assume it’s someone else’s problem, don’t realise they’re actually the one who should be doing something and it’s quite a shock!
www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
The new fire safety rules came into force on October 1, 2006 and to hit you with the jargon the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) was the biggest overhaul of fire safety legislation in decades… but many of us haven’t noticed yet! “It’s not down to the fire service to do the assessment, but we do enforce the order,” says Steve. “If you’re the responsible person you must carry out a fire risk assessment and focus on the safety of everyone in the premises if there’s a fire,” explains Steve Robinson. “You need to pay particular attention to those at special risk, such as the disabled and those with individual needs that could affect their ability to escape quickly, such as pregnancy or sporting injuries. “The fire risk assessment identifies risks that can be removed or reduced and the extent of the general fire precautions need to be taken to protect people against the fire risks that remain. Now if panic’s setting in as it dawns on you that this is actually you, fear not. Legislation always sounds
scary but Steve and the guys at Dogsthorpe fire station are here to help. “I’ve been to a number of fatal fires so I’m well aware of the consequences of poor fire safety,” says Steve. “As well as enforcing the order we also try to educate the business community and to this end we run workshops on fire risk assessment which are held regularly at Dogsthorpe Fire Station. They’re just four hours long, they’re free to attend and are an easy way to help people in the business community comply with the legislation. Just call us on 01733 353202 to book a place.” More info is available at www.firesafetyguides.communities.gov.uk where you can find various guides for different types of premises. Preview The dream team of Burton and Depp reunite once again in this re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s muchloved tale. With the support of Disney, the duo – who did a sterling job with 2005’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory – will undoubtedly add a dark and quirky tone, particularly with Depp starring, unsurprisingly, as the Mad Hatter. Newcomer Mia Wasikowska is the relative unknown as part of an all-star cast, as she stars as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the magical world after her childhood adventure, to end the Red Queen’s (Helena Bonham-Carter) reign of terror. In fact Burton’s partner Bonham Carter is just one member of a Brit-heavy cast that boasts Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, Alan Rickman, Barbara Windsor, Timothy Spall and Matt Lucas doubling as Tweedledum and Dee.
Released: March 5 Cast: Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska Director: Tim Burton
Everything the Burton/Deep collaboration touches usually turns to gold and with Anne Hathaway rounding off the cast as the White Queen, this could arguably be the first big-budget blockbuster of the year.

Talking of collaborations, you can’t do much better than director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon, who paired for the last two Bourne movies. This time they take on an Iraqi war thriller set in 2003, where Damon’s warrant officer is aiming to track down WMDs.
It looked like her career was on the slide, but Sandra Bullock follows her previous biggest movie, The Proposal, with an Oscarnominated turn in this feel-good drama based on a homeless AfricanAmerican, who gets to live out his American footballing dream.
It’s a competitive month in Hollywood, as another famous duo, Oscar-winning helmer Martin Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio, re-unite for the first time since The Departed in this thriller which sees DiCaprio’s US marshall sent to an island to investigate a mysterious disappearance.

Game On
MASS EFFECT 2 (X360/PC)
BIOSHOCK 2 (X360/PS3/PC)
The sequel to space opera Mass Effect ignites a Game On five-star double-bill as developers Bioware unleash an early contender for game of the year. All of the original’s niggles have been rectified as Commander Shepard returns (well, a semicloned version after being sucked out into space in the opening scene) – but it’s the gorgeous graphics and control system that’ve been particularly honed.
I’ve been waiting two-and-a-half years to return to Rapture – arguably next-gen video gaming’s most illustrious stage. Over-familiarity is the game’s major issue, but worries over new developers and a ‘bolton’ multiplayer mode prove unfounded – as Bioshock 2 flourishes in nearly every aspect. This time you play as a Big Daddy – complete with duelwielding plasmid and weapon abilities (drill, trap rivet and rocket spear are exciting new additions) – searching for your Little Sister Eleanor, with the lightning quick bad-ass Big Sister as your major adversary.

With an exceptional script, great sub-plots and sensational interaction – with only the shooting aspect still slightly lacking behind the best FPS’s – this is without doubt the best space-faring sci-fi adventure ever.
The nostalgic art-deco world of Rapture may have to be left behind for a third instalment, but this refined sequel’s still gaming enchantment under the sea.

This worthy follow-up to Banana Blitz is fantastic in all but the game’s new selling point – the balance board.
If ever the word ‘solid’ was needed to describe a game then this motocross and quad bike-based racer is it.
That’s because this hugely enjoyable actioner – which boasts gruesomely satisfying gameplay – surprised me with how engrossing fighting in the depths of hell can be.
A plethora of noteworthy challenges, hit-and-miss minigames and a terrific co-op mode – coupled with trademark colourful graphics – expands the game in almost every way.
A generous helping of vehicles, terrains and racing variations are the plus points – including a refined control system – but it does become bland very quickly.
It does have dull and samey moments, and crusading Dante isn’t the most charismatic hero, but for the most part this is a polished product that deserves to set your console on fire.
Sadly the balance board is extremely frustrating, leaving the always reliable Wii remote as the best way to have a monkey of a time.
It can’t light a candle to last year’s racing best – Forza 3 and Dirt 2 – but fans of off-roading and stunting action will find enough to warrant a purchase.

Sega’s most famous roleplaying series is back with a brand new ultra-stylish postapocalyptic game for the DS.

The dramatic shift from the well-respected first two fighting games pays dividends for the franchise – with an exclusive spin-off storyline built from scratch. BRAYS SUPPORT FEEDER Yet again local band The Brays raised their profile one more notch. They were asked to support nationally renowned band Feeder who were playing as their side project The Renegades at The Water Rats pub in Kings Cross London. In front of a packed house they stormed through a brilliant crowd-pleasing half hour set. But this was just the warm up for their triumphant return to the O2 arena where they played the Indigo stage on February 19. Each time they climb higher up the bill and ESP wishes them every success. NU-METAL RETURNS! If you were ever into the nu-metal scene – and I’m most definitely talking to the over 20’s here – you’ll probably remember a band called Hed(PE). Originally known for making party music within that scene, the recent years have seen them take a much more socially aware stance with their music, leading to much better results. They’re bringing their new outlook on life to Club Revolution on March 6, so take your chance to check them out. ZIGGY PLAYED GUITAR Over the past six months something special’s been happening at the Westwood Hotel – every last Wednesday of the month has seen local musicians take to the stage to raise funds for the NSPCC. The organiser of Strum Wot Ya Brung, Ziggy, was inspired by a group of work colleagues who first completed the Three Peaks Challenge in 24 hours and then went on to trek in dry, dusty South Africa for nine days. Strum Wot Ya Brung has raised over £2,500 so far for charity, thanks to raffles and auctions during the show. The Open Mic night continues this year but will be raising funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the National Association for Bikers with Disabilities – the next show is March 24. It’s well worth checking out as the standard of artists is very high and the atmosphere fantastic. The Westwood Hotel has come into new management and been transformed – this reporter has been to a few nights and managed to not only keep my teeth, but even get a few drinks bought for me! LIVE MUSIC
Liv Slater has the latest news from the local live music scene…
THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT The 80s weren’t just about Michael Jackson and Madonna – some of the best guitar bands around were active at that time including Blondie and The Jam, so if you’re a fan of new wave and mod music head to the Bourne Corn Exchange on March 5. Starting off one of the coolest 80s based nights we’ve heard of for a while will be The Jam’d, a tribute to a band whose influence is still being felt today. Playing all of The Jam’s best loved tracks and reliving the heady days of battles on Brighton beach, this act are worth the price of the ticket alone. Headlining the night is Blondied, a tribute to the coolest female-fronted band to come out of New York for decades. Covering the whole of Blondie’s career with one of the most eerily similar Debbie Harry impersonators around, Blondied have been making a big noise on the tribute scene. As under 16’s are welcome, don’t miss your chance to educate the younger members of the family about real music – hopefully, it’ll prevent them from buying a Jedward single! Combining serious song-writing with a light-hearted, almost naïve sound, the duo definitely stand out from a lot of the indie pop bands around at the moment. Inspired by the emotional honesty of The Eels, the Candle Thieves hope to mix this with a sense that seeing a band live should actually be fun – hence them giving out chocolate at shows and blowing bubbles on stage. Their new single We’re All Going To Die (Have Fun) is released digitally on March 29 and it’s definitely worth a listen. www.thecandlethieves.com

“For those about to rock we salute you,” could be the rallying cry of the fans of Retrolux, who for those of you who haven’t seem them… rock. declined. “I couldn’t be bothered with the whole going to London thing, I was happy doing what I was doing.” The next time Dave saw the guy was on the Live Aid stage playing with David Bowie! Again, no bitterness but perhaps just a slight whiff of melancholy in his voice. Fast forward to 2004 and features in the local press about the past of the band surfaced and with Ian and Dave warming to the idea of a new band and playing together again, suddenly up pops Fozzy. I first became aware of Foz back in ’90 when I was very good friends with his uncle, Ricky Dixon the brother of Terry Dixon, Fozzy’s late father. True to drummer form he turned up at The Swiss last and a tad flustered but still had the time to chat. “It’s great playing with these guys, I love the music, it’s what I listen to at home.” He knows my early reluctance about the band was centred around his expansive drumming, which by the way is superb. “Yeah, I remember you saying that to me but I think we’ve grown into each other and now have a more rounded sound.” I couldn’t agree more Foz.
I caught up with Dave Colton, Ian Graham and Fozzy Dixon on a cold, miserable night in The Swiss Cottage, a great little pub for watching bands in. To be fair when I first saw Retrolux in their early days five years ago I wasn’t their biggest fan but as they’ve matured my view of them has altered and yes, they are bloody good. Mind you with the pedigree they manifest it’s not surprising really. Dave and Ian first got together as musicians way back in 1977 when they formed The Goblinz, a band who soon after morphed into The Name. The Name had a bit of a time of it in the post punk/new wave era playing all the right places in London including the Marquee, 100 Club and the Electric Ballroom. Soon signed to Virgin they recount the time they spent at Richard Branson’s manor house in his £1,000 a day recording studio in ’79. “It was amazing, we were stunned. We’d just come from little old Peterborough, we hadn’t seen anything like this.” You can still feel a slight sense of wonder at the memory. “To be fair we cocked it up, we were signed and blew it. Not www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
A strange thing raises its head here as the band tells me something which I found quite bizarre – “It was easier getting signed to Virgin in the 70s than it was getting the first few gigs in pubs in Peterborough!” I know landlords and ladies want a band that pulls a crowd but jeez that’s tough!
by any debauchery or illicit scandal just… blew it.” A statement not delivered with bitterness but a wistful – ‘ah well.’ Shortly after the foray into stardom the band petered out and Ian by his own admission became reclusive – “I went to Thorney, got out the way altogether. I still played and wrote my own stuff but didn’t really play in public for five years.” Dave however threw himself into recording with Elephant studios in London recording with people like The Smiths, Fiction Factory and The Pleasure Heads, he also became involved with The Destructors, who still play and produce albums on a regular basis. Another tale of ‘what if’ followed in ’84 with a call from a former band mate who asked Dave to come to London for an audition/rehearsal. Dave
The one fear of the band is that the type of music they play, in time, will be to an ever diminishing older audience – “We’re all getting older and half our audience will be too old to come out soon!” – says Dave but I don’t think so, if look hard enough there are young people loving Led Zep, loving The Who loving goddamn good rock, the rock that Retrolux play to be precise. They have an ambition to play the Beer Fest and maybe, just maybe, finish the band there, their last ever gig… Mike Lane if you’re reading, Beer Fest committee, if any of you are reading, that would be an awesome way for a city institute to bow out… If you want to book Retrolux for, well anything really, phone Ian on 07533 792723 he’ll be happy to talk, he will also modestly tell you that he still goes out as a singer/ songwriter on his own and from Pete Liddon’s point of view it’s a great show!

KISS FM PARTY Kiss FM’s Stuart Grant of the Breakfast Show will be DJing at Central in Stamford on March 27. The station’s built up a reputation as one of the best commercial dance stations on air thanks to its commitment to the freshest tunes and hottest remixes.
TRY PULSE8 Try something different this month and head to Pulse8 on Geneva Street – if you’re tired of drum ‘n’ bass and can’t face yet more commercial dance and cheesy chart hits then they have the answer! On March 20 cutting edge electro and progressive house DJs Mindaugelis and DJ Ignas will be pushing boundaries – already huge across Europe, they’ve been getting rave reviews in London too. Formerly Faith, this nightclub has seen some real changes since it re-opened so it’s worth checking out. Everyone’s welcome and if you’re tired of the same old faces, you’re bound to have a great night. Things get sexy at Pulse8 with VIP Adult Entertainment at Impulse, a new night which begins on March 12 – dress to impress. At the other end of the scale, younger clubbers can get a taste of the city’s night life on March 4 with a 16-18’s event, which’ll be running every month.
DANCE HARD Following a short break, the Bangingtunes.com crew return to Club Dissident, Lincoln Road on March 6. Showcasing the best of hard dance, they’re
bringing Karim to town – a pioneer of the hard dance scene, he’s known for bringing mayhem to every club he visits. Expect an uncompromising and cutting edge set from a true lover of clubs! Supporting him will be Ben Townsend, Random But Raw and John Geary and the second room will feature an eclectic blend of everything from techno to happy hardcore from DJs such as Dave Naylor, Jay-Marie and Connors. Tickets £7.
BRANDON BLOCK @ METRO The massive Brandon Block comes to Club Metro on April 2 to help you celebrate the Easter Bank Holiday in style. One of the biggest names in dance, he’s performed all over the globe – now he’s coming to Peterborough. Headlining the Awakening night, he’ll be supported by some of the best DJs on the old skool scene including Ellis Dee, John Da Silva and Rob Soulfood. Tickets are £10 from www.dontstayin.com
SIN-PLY THE BEST 4Cross are hosting a massive night at Club Dissident on March 19 – Original Sin launches his new album Grow Your Wings and MC Eskman will be performing a one-hour set from midnight. Original Sin has been gaining massive support for his new album. As well as being one of the biggest names on the drum ‘n’ bass scene he’s been making waves on mainstream radio too, getting support from Zane Lowe. MC Eskman was voted the Best Lyrical MC by 11,000 people worldwide at the Accelerated Culture Drum ‘n’ Bass Awards and winner of Best MC at the BBC1Xtra Awards, so he comes highly recommended. Young, innovative and fresh he’s a force to be reckoned with, so don’t miss your chance to catch him with Original Sin – this will definitely be one of the best nights to be held in Peterborough this year!
EASTER EXCESS Celebrate Easter at Central in Stamford on April 4 with the Easter Bunny Ball. The original Easter Bunny, DJ Big Geoff, will be making a return appearance, playing r ‘n’ b and dance classics all night. Get dressed up in your best bunny outfits and get discounted entry before midnight. Warm up in Brownes next door and get three bottles for a fiver – you may as well as it’s a Bank Holiday the next day!
BASS CAMP BIRTHDAY Bass Camp celebrate their 7th birthday on March 26 and this long running drum ‘n’ bass night will be turning up the volume with DJs Aybee, Ill Gill, Rickoshay and Gilly while MCs DSP, Clarkey, Sn+per and Alpha G get spitting on the mics. After seven years, this night’s built up quite a following so get down to Club Dissident and enjoy the vibe.
OLD VS. NEW Celebrating dance music in the city for the past two decades, Blend comes to Radius on March 13. This battle between old and new-skool features DJs Nick Slater, Rayan Gee, Jay Heal and Steve Andrews – all veterans of the Peterborough scene who’ll be mixing the best of house classics with the finest up front sounds.
HIP HOP HEROES Following a massive set in the now defunct Bar Bloc last year, Dr. Syntax and Stig of the Dump once more join forces with Locality and Hybrid on March 5 at District 7, Park Road. Featuring cleverly cut lyrics, masterful scratch and some heavy beats, these two tore up the town the last time they visited. Support comes from the Hybrid and Locality residents and covers hip hop, dubstep and d‘n’b from Truth with DJ Muddle, Stance, Mista Crowe, Skillz, Obesean and Hallsie. Tickets £4. Skinnyman returns to Locality exactly a year after his sell-out show in the city – his next show on April 2 is bound to sell out again as this lyrical genius has gone from strength to strength. Tickets £6 from www.district7peterborough.co.uk
OLLY MURS @ LIQUID It’s always great to have a celebrity come to Peterborough, and when we all knew that Olly Murs was coming to town, plenty of people were there to give him a massive welcome! Olly made an appearance at Liquid recently and ESP was there to catch the action. Senior assistant manager Ian Owen told ESP it was a great night – “It was highly successful with a great turnout. Olly put on a great performance and thoroughly entertained the audience.”
Photos: Terry Harris
He performed some great tunes including everyone’s favourite – Superstition – and Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now. We all saw the fun and bubbly character on X Factor last year and he didn’t disappoint when he came to visit, as after the show he took the time to meet and greet a very excited 100 lucky fans. Let’s hope Olly continues in his success and comes back to Peterborough soon! Liquid’s next big event is the under 18’s UV Party on March 20 hosted by UK Club Culture with DJ AJ on the decks playing dance anthems, r'n'b, trance, garage and bassline. Tickets £10 on 01733 898005. www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )

2010 is already proving to be a whirlwind in my life and it’s showing no sign of stopping!
PANTHER NIELS ON TRACK FOR SUCCESS While there’s been some doom and gloom for other sports fans in the city, speedway supporters should have something to smile about with the Panthers heading into their 40th anniversary season in optimistic mood. good for airports, with lots of opportunities for flights.
Photo: Steve Dixon
“I really wanted to have a base here – last year I was based in Sweden, which meant a lot of travelling.”
The new-look side will be in action for the first time on Monday, March 15 in a special 40th Anniversary Challenge and then have another warm-up at Eastbourne five days later. One of the reasons for their confidence is star rider Niels Kristian Iversen, who’s shown his commitment to the city by moving to Peterborough with girlfriend Laura. The 27 year-old is riding for the Panthers for the fourth season but spends a lot of his time travelling to meetings in Poland, Sweden and Denmark. “For the first few years I used to spend a lot of my time here, but I was always staying at different places and I didn’t have a base so moving here will give me more time at home and more time relaxing,” the Dane told ESP. “I’ve moved to Hampton, which is a really nice area. It’s fresh and new and not too far from anything. Peterborough is also
www.esp m ag .co.u k ( M a rch )
Niels is optimistic his first year living in Peterborough will see success on the track. “With a bit of luck and determination we can win the league – I think we can go all the way,” he predicted. “As always everything depends on injuries and riders’ form but we have a lot of potential. Personally my aim is to get the number one position – and stick there.” And he hopes that success will bring more supporters to the East of England Showground. “It’s always a really good night out. Obviously when we’re winning the crowds are bigger, so it’s up to us to win our meetings and get even more people coming to support us.” If you’ve never been, it’s an all action sport and the guys don’t have any brakes on the bikes so it’s a thrill ride from start to finish! www.peterboroughspeedway.co.uk Mark Shaw
After our engagement, we’ve set a date already and so the wedding plans are well underway. We’ve been busying organising the big day and I officially become Mrs Kerry Whelpdale in May! I’m very pleased with the progress I’ve made and am quite surprised at how NOT stressful it is to plan a wedding! Hopefully it will remain so, but I’m sure the closer the day gets the more and more stressed I will become. So far I’ve really enjoyed everything and now I’ve done it all, I’m wishing I hadn’t been so speedy. I can safely say that our wedding planning has not been a joint effort so far. I’ve done 99%, actually I would even go as far as saying 99.9% of the work so far – the truth is though, I actually love it and am happy Chris is allowing me to get on with it without sticking his nose in! Chris has been busy organising his stag do (obviously the most important thing in his opinion) and has so far managed to set five dates in five different countries! I, on the other hand, haven’t given much thought to my hen night, but should do as the wedding is less than three months away now, so not long for me to have some strippers jump out on me! We’re getting married in a beautiful church and therefore have to attend most Sundays. We’ve been going since Christmas and we’re really enjoying it. We’ve met some lovely people there so we’re quite happy that we began this mini adventure. Away from the wedding for a minute and onto some other very exciting news of ours… after the wedding Chris and I will be expecting our first baby Whelpdale to join our family, so I will be a very VERY fat bride but I just cant wait for it all. It’s really exciting and was a very nice surprise to find out I was pregnant. It wasn’t planned, but we were both very open minded and thought if a baby decided to join us, we would be over the moon. And now we’ve realised that we got what we wanted, we both just get very excited every time we think of having a mini Chris and I! Over to Chris’ side of life… the second new Gaffer has come into the club and hopefully things are starting to look up for Peterborough United. Chris seems to be happy with the new manager and the new training styles he’s applied and he can see a real boost in everyone’s motivation which can only be a good thing. It’s been a tough season for the boys, they’ve all been on a big downer which I think they’re finding hard to digest. The last two seasons they’ve become accustomed to winning games, so now it’s proving to be a difficult time, but hopefully the new manager can turn things around. It would be an amazing comeback for the boys if they got themselves out of the relegation zone. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed so I hope everyone else is too! Chris isn’t one to bring football home with him, however, recently even he has been down which is how I can tell how everyone else must be. Hopefully when I write again next time I will have some further good news to report on, and after their 1-0 win over QPR it can only give the boys the boost they need and encourage them to fight for their spot in the Championship!

IF ONLY IT WAS JUST THE TAN THAT WAS FAKE They say that money can’t buy you happiness but, in the world of John Terry, it appears that at the very least it seems to be able to buy you the silence of your mistress and the eternal devotion of your astoundingly forgiving wife. Just take Toni Poole, wife of serial alley-cat John who, after being publicly humiliated when news of his affair hit the headlines, appeared to welcome him back with open arms and a huge lipglossed smile. For goodness sake, did the daft bat book in for a selfrespect bypass too last time she bit of WAG maintenance? Let’s just for visited the salon say, her over-inflated displays of love and affection for her lying, cheating husband in those supposedly unstaged Dubai holiday photos weren’t just barf inducing, they’ve as good as set the feminist movement back a few notches. For goodness sake JT, who incidentally apparently refused to issue a public apology to his family for his behaviour, was alleged to have boasted to friends that he could “sort it” with the missus and next thing, what do you know, there they are acting in public more like honeymooners than a couple trying to deal with infidelity. Has the woman no pride? At least Tess Daly and Cheryl Cole have been real enough to actually look hurt. And at least Vernon Kay has done the decent thing and apologised on air for embarrassment caused by his recent indiscretions. It doesn’t excuse it, but it’s certainly the right thing to do. So if JT’s wandering eye goes for another ramble in the near future, Toni may only have herself to blame and when yet more photos emerge of the “so in love” Terrys on another make or break holiday, I’ll be about as convinced as I am by Jordan’s wedding photos. The things people will do for a cupboard full of designer handbags.

A HAIR BRAINED SCHEME
STEPS TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE
Landlord Dale Oades has opened a hair salon in his pub, The Cross Keys in Winterton, Lincolnshire after the town’s only barbers closed down. Sounds very enterprising to me, after all, they say that the key to surviving the recession is to diversify. I just worry whether it’s a good idea to have all that alcohol in such close proximity to scissors – let’s hope his punters don’t go home half cut!
It’s a sad indictment on the state of the nation when the stairs into the Job Centre down the road in Cambridge have to be taped off for safety reasons because they’re crumbling under the sheer weight of the unemployed. Apparently the stairs have taken a major pounding with the number of jobless old people rising by about 40% in a year. Contrast that with poor new Sean Duncan who was sacked on his very first shift at his factory job because, at 19 stone, they couldn’t find any overalls a to fit him. So now his local Job Centre steps are set to take been he’d only if had have needn’t they that ng poundi double the lighter, oh the irony. But will he get his job back and ease . chance Fat steps? g creakin already the on e pressur
THE PRICE ISN’T RIGHT And whilst we’re on the subject, what on Earth is going on with Jordan and Alex Reid? One minute, after her popularity dips to an all time low, she’s dumping him live on television after walking out of I’m A Celebrity, then not three months later, straight after his popularity conversely hits an all time high when he wins Celebrity Big Brother, she’s hitching more than her wagon to him and they get married in a quickie Las Vegas ceremony. Oh Alex, can’t you see what’s happening here? I interviewed Jordan once when she came to Serpentine Green to do a book signing and I can honestly say it was the most difficult intervi ew I’ve ever done – and that’s coming from a woman who’s interviewed Jim Davidson (not by choice , more as a favour. Note to Mr Grumpy – it wasn’t my fault you couldn’t even sell out The Broadway and had to do the interview to try and drum up a few ticket sales). She clearly didn’t want to be speak ing to me. Peter Andre, by contrast, was an absolu te delight, stood up the corner gas bagging with my Alex like old mates and laughing with him about “your missus interviewing my missus”. We decid ed he was a bit of a loveable wally, i.e. said a few plonkerish things but you couldn’t help but think ‘what a nice bloke’. And the funny thing is, having been glued to CBB, I’d describe Alex Reid in exactl y the same way. Ms Price clearly has a favourite type. In my view the only difference is that Peter had the good sense to get out before her relentless ambit ion tainted him too much.
