PRIMARK IS COMING! Fashion fans are on a high after hearing that Queensgate is to house a Primark store set to open its doors in November 2012. Coming off the back of TK Maxx taking over the old Woolies on Bridge Street this is all good news for the city. The hugely popular store offering value shopping will be one of the largest units in Queensgate, showcased over two impressive floors. Work starts on the Primark site soon and will see it take over nearly all of the units with just the upper floor of Argos remaining all the way across to Bhs and all of the downstairs units. Some of the existing stores on those sites will relocate, including Superdrug. The other good news is that it will stock the full line of women’s, men’s, children’s and homeware – we can hardly wait! www.queensgate-shopping.co.uk
HARLEYS DINER CELEBRATES It’s great to see a new enterprise become established and Harleys Diner in Market Deeping is now celebrating three successful years with improved branding, new menus and extended opening hours. Owner Richard Swinscoe told ESP – “When we launched the Harleys Diner concept in 2008, many people were sceptical about how a motorcycle themed restaurant would be received in a small market town. However, I’m delighted to say it’s been a resounding success. "Our customers asked us to open on Sundays to allow them to enjoy our now famous freshly cooked breakfasts and chill out. We listened, trialled a few Sundays and now it’s one of our most popular days.” Customers also asked for certain dishes to be added to the menu based on their travels

GET READY FOR EASTER BEER FEST
FONTANELLA’S A TASTE OF ITALY
We hear plans are well underway for the Charters Easter Beer Fest. Over thirty real ales are being brought in for the big event planned for April 21-25. Ian Parker will be providing the live tunes on the Saturday to help wash down your beer. It’s free admission so fingers crossed the weather’s fine and we can all get outside in the beer garden!
Lunchtimes in Whittlesey never looked so good! New Italian sandwich bar Fontanella’s has recently opened and got off to a flying start in what was formerly Beatas tea rooms on Market Street. The Fontanella family have a great track record locally in the restaurant business and are offering freshly made pizza, pasta, baguettes and breakfast (as well as some gorgeous desserts!) seven days a week. Dine in or take-away and if you’re in a real hurry just pre-order before 12.00 and they’ll have it ready for you. So ditch the soggie sarnies in your lunchbox and give them a call on 0800 849 9279.
DAY OF MUSIC ON ITS WAY We’ve heard from the Peterborough Music Making group about a fantastic day of live music coming up soon in Peterborough which should really liven up the city centre. On May 7 between 10am and 4pm there’ll be a musical showcase with performers of all ages, on all types of different instruments, from the city’s various musical groups playing in Cathedral Square, in and around St. John’s church and Queensgate. It’s all free so you can just shop, stop and listen! See www.peterborough musicmaking.org.uk for more.
PULSE GOT TALENT Catch the Pulse at The Ostrich on March 18 and you’ll spot a singer you may well be seeing more of on Britain’s Got Talent. 21 year-old Rhys Aliker went in for the show and we hear he did pretty well but there are more hurdles yet so fingers crossed for him. Rhys is a labourer by trade but the guys from the Pulse tell us he’s a damned good singer too! As the gig is on Red Nose Day, get your fancy dress on and get ready for some fun.

A lot of thought went into choosing my team for the recent charity quiz night at Peterborough United. I managed to pull together a history graduate, a mate who’d practically travelled the world, a DJ and as I am a huge film geek – I had the movie questions covered. So, how my team came second to last I have no idea. We were even beaten by a team of POSH players! Still, I mustn’t grumble as the charity quiz raised £2,000 for POSH’s three charities – Sue Ryder, the Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus (ASBAH) and the Free Kicks Foundation, and that amount of money will make such a big difference to people’s lives. The quiz was hosted by Paul Stainton (presenter of the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Breakfast Show in Peterborough) who also compered a raffle and auction – which saw one lucky fan snap up signed England 1966 World Cup memorabilia. So although I was beaten by POSH players such as Craig Mackail-Smith and Charlie Lee, myself and the 150 other people in the room had a great night. Keep an eye out for the next one! Mikey Clarke

Loads of events are on offer for everyone to take part in, including robot wars, chocolate welding and for CSI fans, a virtual autopsy from Dr. Liz Austell, a pathologist. Lauren played for Yaxley Ladies for many years so she knows a thing or two about her footy and will be joining in some practice sessions with the Peterborough United players as they throw open the doors to the club. Throughout the day from 10am – 5pm players will be training on the pitch, there’ll be training sessions for kids, face painters, fairground rides and a bouncy castle. The shop will be open in the concourse along with various stands, a speed kick machine and former players will be appearing in the Hall of Fame suite. There’ll be a question and answer session with the manager after training and catering is provided. The ESP Dance Crew will be performing from 12.30pm so don’t miss this great day out for footy fans!

ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly takes a look at how to wear seventies style – without looking like an ageing hippy! 12
www.espmag.co.uk
The great thing about going ‘boho’ is that neither size nor age actually matter – if you know what to do. A long dress can be worn by most women and the new peasantstyle blouses offer a beautiful cover-up for arms. The trick is not to wear seventies head to toe. You don’t want to look like you’re playing ‘dress up’. Mix with something more contemporary and get the best of both worlds.
Crochet was huge in the 70s. You’ll find its influence both in knitted fabrics and beautiful lace, but with a modern twist (Lauren – dress)
Don’t wear billowy pieces on top and bottom unless you’re very tall. Mix a form fitting jacket with a flowing skirt (Shirley – denim jacket and blue skirt/ Lauren shirt with shorts).
Bags were always fabric based with embroidered or glass embellishments or fringed with suede. These bags are the 2011 versions.
Modernise your waist by wearing two or three slim belts rather than one wide one. Choose macramé or crochet as a softer alternative.
Hair is long with a centre parting. Loosely wrap two inch sections around a medium curling iron for soft flowing curls. Eyes are smoky and earrings are long and dangly. Jewelled, flat sandals or wedges complete the look.
Kick flare jeans are a godsend for short legs. Team with a beautiful silk blouse and wedges for maximum femininity.
Lastly, this is the kind of fashion to have fun with – so relax and play with it.
Faded denim is back but don’t pair with other washed denim pieces. Choose a deeper shade or a completely different fabric.

30 SECONDS TO SEAL THE DEAL
pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk
Apparently women make decisions about a potential partner after 30 seconds of conversation. I doubt this was the case when Kate met William. “Hi, I’m Prince William, the future king of England.” On this occasion I get the impression four seconds was enough.

NEW BIKE FOR BMW! March 19 can’t come any faster for the crew at Man About Town sponsors Balderston Motorcycles who launch their new arrivals the K1600 GT and K1600 GTL this month. Those letters and digits sound like BMW are bringing back a couple of cars from the 1970s but bike fans will know these machines are of the two-wheeled variety.
Tattoo
Both touring bikes come with fabulous motors, the lightest and most compact 6-cylinder in-line engines in serial motorcycle production, weighing a smidgen over 102kg. Output is 160 bhp and more than 70 per cent of its maximum torque kicks in from just 1,500 rpm. Basically they shift.
MY ANNOUNCEMENT
Being Beemers the bikes come with a magnitude of trick bits and technology – all of which I’ll report back on next month when I become one of the first people in the country to ride then.
In true Man About Town style I’ve chosen my column to announce I’ve been and got myself a tattoo! Early mid-life crisis or an expression of creativity? Either way my dad’s going to kick my head in and attempt to remove it with a blowtorch.
Of course they come with the customary BMW choices in ride modes, dynamic traction control and electronic suspension adjustment. They’ve even got a controllable interface for iPod, MP3, USB and Bluetooth. Best of all they’re the world’s first motorcycles to have adaptive headlight (optional extra) for increased safety at night. Balderston are also launching the G650 GS and the re-vamped R1200 R on the same day. For details visit www.balderston.net or call 01733 565470.
I opted for my forearm since the back of my neck has more creases in it than pre-botox Jordan, my arms are puny, my calves are littered with varicose veins and my chest has been hibernating in body hair since I was 14. Newly opened Lost Time Tattoo is the place responsible for my ‘Product of Italy’. I popped out for a panino in my lunch hour and came back with my new creation – as easy and random as that. Owner Dan Hayes and tattooist Callum Antonelli worked their magic and I’ve no regrets (apart from not getting that prosciutto and mozzarella panino).
OLD SHEP KEITH Some pictures paint a thousand words…
CAUGHT IN THE ACT! Tori knows
applying lip balm is far more excitin
g than listening to Mikey go through As tattoo establishments go, this place is unique his article ☺ and stylish but in a strange way. Situated in Wentworth Street in the city centre, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve walked into a church. There’s a piano and a nice antique sideboard to the right of the counter – both accessorised with bibles, pictures of Jesus and other religious artifacts.
SAME MOUSE DIFFERENT CHEESE Topo Gigio’s in Cowgate is under new ownership and being refurbished and to my relief Gigio the mouse is staying put despite a logo revamp.
I was expecting to be humming Songs of Praise while Callum went to work on my arm, but the musical accompaniment for my time spent being drawn on was pure rockabilly (thumbs up by the way).
Gigio has long been associated with Peterborough and it’s good to see new owner Paulo Jorge Rodrigues has decided to keep him. Expect Italian food on the menu as before but complimented with a wide range of Portuguese dishes too and new cocktail bar. Yum. Looking forward to the opening early this month.
So, a weird but wonderful experience and one I recommend for tattoos and piercing with a twist.
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Chick
I couldn’t resist with Easter only a few weeks away: egg, Jesus, La Senza, chocolate, incubator, Sarah Harding, yellow, GU clinic, fluff, calories, stockings, Kinder, chicken, stilettos, Cadbury, Halo, flick and omelette.

Matty Speaks... My highlight of the month was being invited to the press night of the tour of We Will Rock You in Glasgow; it’s not often you get to sit watching a show next to Roger Taylor, Brain May’s cousin and the Mayor of Glasgow! After the show it was great to hang out with the cast (along with lots of free alcohol!) as well as have a good chat with the Queen legends themselves. Brain May and Roger Taylor were both great blokes indeed! My next venture to work on this year is Cool Britannia! A tribute to the Brit pop bands from the 90s, the show will be opening its first show at the Stamford Corn Exchange on June 3! More info coming soon, in the meantime check out the new website www.britpopmusic.co.uk

paparazzi Caught in the act? MELTING POT @ THE BREWERY TAP It was another packed night at the Brewery Tap as Julz and the guys got the crowd in the mood for love over Valentine’s weekend with their Melting Pot night – a great blend of soul and Motown. Mike Harris was behind the lens for ESP and captured the action for ESP’s Paparazzi – looks like you were all having a great night as ever! This month there’s plenty more to look forward to at the Tap. March 5 sees the launch of the Jelly Roll for 2011 in the main venue with some fantastic 50s and 60s R‘n’B, soul, vintage ska and reggae. Poetry fans can catch some great words of wisdom at the Speakeasy nights on March 2 and 23 in the Tap Room. The Brewery Tap has seen some great live music nights and they don’t come much more entertaining than the One Eyed Cats so don’t miss a rousing night of great tunes and fun with one of the liveliest bands on the block when they appear on March 19. A fantastic new food menu’s just been launched (see our review on page 34) and real ale lovers will be pleased to hear that White Dwarf’s just £2.35 throughout March!

ESP’s Susan Saunders talks to Eliza Doolittle – the girl with the loud style and smiley face who’s taking over the charts with her feel good pop tunes… Eliza Doolittle has been very busy making her name in music the last few years. Gone are the days when you just think of the girl from My Fair Lady singing “I could’ve danced all night”, as the newest Eliza on the block is much more hip. Raised by a piano-playing dad and singing mum, it’s not surprising to hear that Eliza always knew she was going to be a musician and her early dreams, definitely weren’t wrong. Eliza, having written songs since she was 12, showed some obvious promise and as such a publishing deal was signed at the tender age of 16. At just 22, this Camden girl’s already made a big impression on the charts with her single Pack Up reaching number five and her self titled, platinum debut album selling 300,000 copies to date. Now her latest single, Mr Medicine looks set to take the charts by storm this month. I caught up with Eliza to find out first hand, more about her, her single and what the next 12 months look like. “I’m super happy that I'm releasing Mr Medicine as a single, I hope people enjoy it. It’s got a sick groove and I love playing it live every time. Although I never tell people what it's about, I love to hear the guesses!” I’ve always been curious about how these creative types, get inspiration to write chart topping hits, so wanted to find out how, almost ten years on from putting pen to paper to write music, Eliza still has motivation to write.
known from a young age this is what I wanted to do ‘cause I know some of my friends are stressed with not knowing exactly what they want to do for a living.” At the moment Eliza says she’s on a mission to get her music out far and wide with her headline tour kicking off at the end of this month. “I have my European and UK tours coming up which I’m looking forward to so much! Me and my boys have been rehearsing a lot to get it sounding super buff. I love touring; it's one of my favourite parts of the job along with writing.” When not doing all of the above, Eliza stays close to her roots and catches up with friends and family who she misses “way too much”, doing all the fun things typical of a girl her age; going out dancing, to the cinema or “watching the Gunners play”, which is where we differ because Man U is my club of choice. Maybe an ideal day would be a culmination of all of these things and eating some yummy food rather than the service station stuff eaten whilst on the road. Talking of food and on the subject of dates (Ooooh maybe with Mr Medicine?), Eliza reveals with a smile – “I am the worst cook, but if I was to have a date round, I could make a killer beans on toast.” Culinary best, we think
“I get inspiration in the funniest places – the airport, the shower, the tube”
“I always loved singing. I think it was when I realized that everybody grows up and gets a job; I wanted my job to be singing. I consider myself so lucky to have
perhaps not, although at least her music whets the appetite much more. Eliza’s new single Mr Medicine is available to buy from March 21, her tour kicks off on March 25. www.elizadoolittle.com www.myspace.com/elizadoolittle

“It doesn't matter where I am to write songs, it's always about my headspace. I get inspiration in the funniest places – the airport, the shower, the tube. It can be quite annoying sometimes though, as I usually come up with material in places where I can't sing out loud, or jot my ideas down (like in the shower).”

Time to get Appy Feet Originating from Turkey and practiced all over the Far East this natural pedicure method is certainly unique. Using garra rufa fish, also known as doctor fish, to gently nibble away and exfoliate unwanted dead skin, your feet are left feeling soft, pampered and healthy. I popped along to the spa to see what all the fuss was about. Having no idea what to expect I pre-rinsed my feet before taking a seat at the water pod where the minnow-size fish eagerly waited. After five minutes of nervous hesitation I finally put my feet into the warm water where the curious little fish immediately started nibbling away at the dead skin. The fish don’t have any teeth so it didn’t hurt but it was very different to any pedicure I’d experienced before – it tickled a lot yet felt relaxing at the same time! At first it was slightly tingly, almost like very light pins and needles, however this soon eased off and I was able to enjoy a soothing foot massage. After the 15 minute treatment I was shocked at how good a job they’d done; my feet felt refreshed and extremely soft as well as having a slight pink tinge to them as the blood flow had been increased. At just £10 for 15 minutes or £20 for 35 minutes it’s very reasonably priced. It’s a walk-in service with no appointments so make sure you pop along nice and early as they do get very busy.

There is of course fibre from the potato skin and if using the darker cabbage leaves you’ll also bring some beneficial folic acid. Cabbage also contains powerful anti-cancer compounds known as glucosinolates.
IRISH
With the addition of dollops of butter and full cream milk it can also ramp up the saturated fat content making it a high fatty food so only enjoy on occasion.
SWAPS ESP’s nutrition expert continues her trip around the world looking for the best in every country’s diet, no matter what takes your fancy! March brings us the flavour of Ireland as they celebrate their very own St Patrick’s Day. Ask the Irish for their best home-made dish and I’m pretty sure they’d tell you anything so long as it contains potato. One favourite is the beloved ‘champ’ which is a popular potato dish probably washed down with the famous pint of Guinness (or even their famous whiskies)! Although the potato has been an Irish staple for many years and has a place in their history they can also be proud of some traditional foods that can offer some good health benefits such as: Irish stew – made from Irish lamb this meat may have some saturated fats but it also boasts some good fats that we need, protein, along with a host of nutrients such as iron, zinc (both needed for growth, immunity) B1, B12 and more. Loading your stew up with a good heap of seasonal veg will definitely boost your nutritional intake plus your fibre. Irish soda bread (or wheaten) – this bread if made with wholemeal flour can be a nutritious wholesome bread. It can be an ideal type of bread to use for those with yeast sensitivities as this bread traditionally should NOT contain yeast (always check on the packet or better still make your own). It also brings with it good fibre, zinc and B vitamins. Seafood – not only do the Irish enjoy fish such as salmon and haddock you would have also found seaweed in much of their traditional cooking. Seaweed (or sea vegetable) is probably one of the most nutritionally dense foods on the planet as it contains many minerals including calcium, magnesium and of course iodine which is needed for healthy thyroid function.
– reduce some of the butter in the champ and replace with a little olive oil. Replace full fat for skimmed milk. Instead of boiling the potatoes, steam them which will hold in more nutrients (and of course remember to keep the skins on). Guinness deserves a mention here, (not that any alcoholic drink can make any claims to being healthy) it might taste of iron but it really only contains trace amounts of the mineral. However, loved by many, a pint of Guinness may bring some ‘small’ benefits by way of the compounds called flavanoids which are known for their antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties. With around 200 calories per pint it won’t take long to pile on the pounds so that’s a good reason to limit the amount (plus there’s the alcohol content). Many a good Irish stew will have a good dose of Guinness in for flavour. So be sure to have a great St Patrick’s Day.
So back to the famous champ – as the skins are left on the potato and mashed up with milk, spring onions and cabbage this dish can offer some excellent nutrition from vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B6 and more.

LOCAL FOOD
THE BREWERY TAP 80 Westgate, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 358500 With its unique style, great range of real ales and fabulous Thai food the Brewery Tap has always set itself apart from the rest. This brew pub continues to offer a wonderful blend of fine food, good brews and great nights out in Peterborough. Its freshly cooked Thai food has always added to its individuality and now the menu’s been refreshed. All we can say is wow! Where else would you get soft shell crab and marinated chicken wrapped in fragrant pandan leaves with your pint? This pub grub is a breed apart and the new additions to the bar menu have taken it another step forward. While many of your old favourites remain, dishes like pad ta krai, chicken (or prawns) fried in the chef’s special garlic and lemongrass sauce and chu chi salmon, a pan fried fillet basted with curry sauce and kaffir lime leaves are succulent new options bursting with flavour. The white crab fried rice was a tasty alternative to the norm and we can recommend the yellow curry – delicious and not too spicy. The menu’s been pared down a little making it easier to choose but there’s still a great range of dishes to suit all tastes. This is restaurant quality food in a pub that takes you from day to night with ease. Whether it’s lunch or a relaxing meal with your mates followed by some fine wines and ales the Brewery Tap is still the place to be. In the evenings there’s table service available upstairs and at weekends it’s advisable to book. Fill in one of their feedback forms and you could win a free meal, or use the new P Card (available from the Destination Centre on Bridge Street) and you’ll get 10 per cent off from Sunday to Thursday. During March Oakham Ales’ White Dwarf is just £2.35 a pint and there’s some great entertainment coming up too so drop by and try the new menu – we think you’ll be impressed! www.oakhamales.com
Cherry House
As the Face of ESP, Lauren Hughes gets the celebrity treatment all year, so she was well looked after at the Cherry House restaurant in Werrington where she has free dining for the next few months as one of her prizes. Owner and Chef Andrew Corrick has been running the cosy eatery for the last 18 years with Paula (his Partner) taking over as Restaurant Manager at the start of 2010. Having learnt his craft in some of the top hotels in London, Andrew initially moved to Peterborough to take up the role of Head Chef at what was then the Swallow Hotel before realising his dream of owning his own restaurant. As the saying goes ‘the rest is history’ and Andrew hasn't looked back since establishing the Cherry House as one of the top dining destinations in the

region, so where better for Lauren to enjoy a lovely meal for two with her boyfriend Paul? “It was a really lovely evening out,” said Lauren – “You’re made to feel extremely welcome from the moment you enter the front door.” The menu is English with a French influence – a mixture of classical and Nouvelle cuisine without the small portions. Lauren tried the tomato and mozzarella starter followed by perfectly sautéed chicken and gorgeously indulgent chocolate mousse while her partner had duck followed by cheesecake. “The food was great,” said Lauren, “and the atmosphere was really relaxing. With candlelight it was very romantic.”
The Cherry House is a gorgeously quaint looking cottage with low beams, and cosy fires but has 70 covers in one sitting and is as popular for parties as it is for couples like Lauren and her boyfriend. Even though you can expect high quality food you won’t be hit with high prices – with a fixed price menu with three courses and coffee for just £26.95 you know it’s a treat you can afford a little more often, and you just might see our Lauren dining beside you!

MONSOON TANDOORI 83-85 Thorpe Road, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 893773
Having heard there was a new Indian restaurant at Thorpe Lodge Hotel, my colleague and I were keen to try it out. The chef at Monsoon Tandoori produces some fantastic authentic Indian cuisine, using all the traditional methods that he learned back home in the Punjab villages. We were very impressed when given the option of choosing just how spicy we’d like our food, and both of us chose just a sprinkling of chilli! All the food’s freshly made to order and you’ll find absolutely no preservatives or pre-cooked meat here. It’s all sourced locally, and any special requirements will be catered for – all you have to do is ask. The chef is known to mix his unique traditional methods with modern methods while keeping the food authentic, fresh and tasty. The aroma from the food as it was cooking was mouth-watering.

Soon the food came out – first a delicious salad, accompanied by a fresh cucumber and mint sauce, then several hot-out-of-the oven naan breads, and a huge dish full of an incredible looking chicken balti. Need we say more – it was delicious! The food tasted very fresh and there were bursts of flavour from all the different herbs and spices. The chicken was tender with plenty to go round. The lamb and chicken kebabs oozed flavour, and were chargrilled over the special Tandoori charcoal grill and there was plenty of sauce to be mopped up by the naan bread. The restaurant has a romantic candlelit feel in the evenings but if you can’t make a relaxing night of it you can order a takeaway – just give them a call and they’ll have it ready for you, or they’ll deliver to your door for free. There’s plenty to choose from on the menu but we can recommend the balti and lamb dishes. “I want people to leave the restaurant having thoroughly enjoyed their food… and so far we’ve had great feeback,” the restaurant owner, told us. So, with that in mind, next time you fancy a quiet, tasty meal head over to the Monsoon Tandoori, you won’t be disappointed! Lara Johnson

BATTLE: LOS ANGELES Released: March 11 Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan Director: Jonathan Liebesman
The first real Hollywood big-budget blockbuster comes in the form of this alien invasion actioner. Aaron ‘Two Face’ Eckhart (The Dark Knight) leads his new marine platoon against mysterious invading forces as Los Angeles becomes the last bastion for mankind after all of Earth’s major cities fall. With a stellar cast that boasts R‘n’B star Ne-Yo (please detect the subtle hint of sarcasm) and Michelle Rodriguez (who was thrown out of TV series Lost after getting banned for drink-driving in Hawaii), you’d quite clearly expect special effects to win the day. Still expect it to be the biggest-grossing film of the year so far as it fills that pre-summer slot that propelled Alice In Wonderland to massive box-office success last year. Despite my cautious approach, my fingers are still crossed hoping this will be a harmless slice of over-the-top sci-fi action fun like Independence Day, and not poor end-of-the-world rubbish like 2012 and the recent low-budget Skyline.
RANGO Released: March 4 Cast: Johnny Depp, Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher Director: Gore Verbinski
Johnny Depp and Pirates Of The Caribbean director Gore Verbinski re-team in another high-profile computer-generated animation. Verbinski passed on directorial duties for the fourth Pirates film – On Stranger Tides – to helm this family movie which sees Depp’s household chameleon pet try and discover his true self. Comedic hilarity will surely ensue as Rango – longing to be a swashbuckling hero – inadvertently gets his wish as he finds himself in an old-style wild west town plagued by bandits, leaving the title character to grow up fast. Little Miss Sunshine’s Abigail Breslin, The Wedding Crasher’s Isla Fisher, and veteran Brit actors Bill Nighy and Ray Winstone help round-off the voice cast.
THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU Released: March 4 Matt Damon stars as an ambitious politician who risks everything to fight for the woman he loves – Emily Blunt’s beautiful ballet dancer – despite mysterious forces trying to keep them apart, in this romance-tinged thriller from the writer of The Bourne Ultimatum.
THE COMPANY MEN
THE LINCOLN LAWYER
LIMITLESS
THE EAGLE
Released: March 11
Released: March 18
Released: March 23
Released: March 25
There’s a good early vibe for this aptly relevant economic drama which sees several men – including Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones – embroiled in savage corporate downsizing at a major company which affects them, their families and their local communities.
Matthew McConaughey stars as a down-on-his-luck LA lawyer who strikes gold by defending a high profile playboy (Ryan Phillippe), but then finds out he’s seriously in over his head in this novel-turnedfilm drama which co-stars Josh Lucas and Marisa Tomei.
The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper headlines this action-thriller as an out-of-work writer who discovers a top-secret drug that bestows him with super-human abilities, but soon higher powers – including business mogul Robert De Niro – want to get their hands on this new designer narcotic.
GI Joe’s Channing Tatum is a Roman centurion investigating the unexplained disappearance of an army legion in Scotland’s unchartered highlands – aided by his British slave (Jamie Bell) – in this sword-and-sandals adventure from the director of The Last King Of Scotland.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

DEAD SPACE 2 (360/PS3/PC) Out now For the second year running EA could’ve chalked up another interstellar Game of the Year in the first month. After sci-fi RPG Mass Effect 2 took the plaudits for 2010, this survival horror sequel could undoubtedly do the same for this year – with a follow-up that’s bigger, bolder and better than the sensational 2008 original. This time hero Isaac Clarke has a voice – and a truly gripping personal story – as he gets to relive his nightmare, this time across a massive space city known as ‘The Sprawl’. As with sequels to Gears of War and Bioshock, Dead Space 2 lacks the initial ‘wow’ factor of the first game but with everything perfectly tweaked – rewarding combat system, terrifying new Necromorph enemies and some truly mind-blowing action set-pieces – this is about as good as it gets in the shooting genre. The one minor blip is a sub-standard multiplayer mode that could’ve been fleshed out a bit better, but – that aside – developers Visceral Games deserve immense praise for what is arguably the most frightening video gaming experience ever made. Get spaced out.
#####
LITTLEBIGPLANET 2 (PS3) Out now Talking of games that have been improved for the better – enter this sequel to one of the best Playstation exclusives. Sony superstar SackBoy is back, with a deeper and more rewarding experience for fans, with a whole host of new exciting gadgets and tools – whether you’re creating levels, or simply playing them, this is wonderfully engaging stuff. The experience is only slightly hampered by some frustrating platforming mechanics, but the sheer joy (and ease) of getting your creations online is second to none on planet fun.
#####
TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED 2 (360/PS3/PC) Out now
Next-gen gamers are being truly spoilt – particularly in the past year – with the plethora of great driving games, and TDU 2 continues this exciting trend. What makes TDU stand-out is the seamless blending of single and multiplayer modes in a large expansive driving world – you can quite literally drive past anyone online and challenge them to a race. It doesn’t handle the best and isn’t visually the best, but with bags of variation and character this is one rewarding experience.
#####
TWO WORLDS II (360/PS3/PC) Out now It’s undoubtedly clear that there’s been a lot of passion put into the development of this noteworthy sequel – but it’s let down by some clumsy errors. There’s a lot to like – in-depth character customisation, great magic system and a likeable story – within the vast world of Antaloor, but a shoddy frame rate, poor voice acting and irritating controls leaves this one for hardcore RPG enthusiasts only. But if you endeavour there’s still an enjoyable experience to be eeked out – and this nicely fills the void until Dragon Age II.
#####
NBA JAM (360/PS3/WII) Out now We all remember the fun we had playing this two-on-two basketball arcade feast in the early nineties – and now we can again with this next-gen throwback. It’s hard to recommend what could’ve been an outstanding downloadable game is now a retail title – particularly with 2K’s stellar NBA 2K11 out there. But with more than thirty NBA teams it’s still great fun scoring outstanding dunk set-pieces with Bryant, James, Howard and co. but to call it value for money would be a stretch. But classic hoops have still been welcomingly reignited. Boomshakalaka!
#####
GTA IV: THE COMPLETE EDITION (360/PS3/PC) Out now
What better way to finish this month’s guide than with the most critically-lauded next-gen game of all-time. Grand Theft Auto IV may now be nearly three years old, but this final edition which includes the exceptional DLC’s The Lost And Damned and The Ballad Of Gay Tony – which could be standalone games in their own right – is a must-buy if you’ve not yet visited Liberty City. Great ‘sandbox’ world, great missions, great characters, great ingenuity, pretty much great everything from the guys at Rockstar. Breathtaking, near flawless, stuff. ’Nuff said.
##### Thanks to Ian Hilling and Paul Ryan for helping playtest some of this month’s titles.

TWO PINTS OF HOT WAX & A PACKET OF CRISPS PLEASE Hello and welcome back to Mostly Funny. As you can see by the red nose on my hooter, it's time for Comic Relief 2011. This year’s charity fundraiser takes place on Friday March 18 and if you've been in your local supermarket recently you may have seen four famous comedians staring back at you from packets of crisps. To cut a long story short, Walkers have teamed up with four of the country’s funniest comedians (Stephen Fry, Jimmy Carr, Al Murray and Frank Skinner) to raise money for Comic Relief by creating a flavour of crisp that's a punrelated play on words of the comedian’s name. Stephen Fry Up, Jimmy Con Carr-ne, Steak & Al Pie and Frank Roast Dinner. The idea behind the fundraiser is to see which flavour sells the most, with the winning comedian escaping a public waxing of their body hair while the other three are subjected to a back, ‘s’ and ‘c’ live on Comic Relief night. At this point, let us all be grateful that Walkers didn't launch a flavour called Dawn French
Comedy Roadshow Tours have hand picked stars from the smash hit TV shows Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow and Live At The Apollo and brought them direct to us with local shows at the Cresset. This is a rare opportunity to see these brilliant performers up close and live so catch Mike Wilmot plus support on March 11. Mike Wilmot is an internationally acclaimed Canadian funny man who co-starred in Rich Hall’s Cattle Drive (BBC4) and the film It’s All Gone Pete Tong as well as numerous appearances on Nevermind The Buzzcocks. Tickets cost £12 and the show starts at 8pm. Box office: 01733 265705.
Fries, because it spares us from the possibility of Lenny Henry having to give her a Brazillian. Now, as forfeits go, a waxing is OK but considering Walkers are billing the competition on their website as ‘the clash of the comics’ I was expecting some kind of no-holds barred free-for-all fight on Comic Relief night. Why get Stephen Fry to pose holding a frying pan if he's not allowed to smack Al Murray's pub landlord around his shaven bloated head? And I’d buy a year’s supply of Frank Skinner's Roast Dinner crisps if it meant he'd land a proper left hook on Jimmy Carr's face. Just look at the way Carr's backing away from Skinner – "Oooh, don't hit me Frank I'm only holding a soup ladle." There's a whole bunch of other funny stuff that'll be going on, on Friday March 18 so get your red nose, a multi-pack of humorously named crisps and get ready to lol.
ED BYRNE Ed Byrne: Crowd Pleaser means the wit is back at the Cresset on March 14 with a masterful display of observational comedy from this TV regular. The Times said the jokes come so fast the hecklers don’t have a chance to get a word in edgeways. Tickets cost £20 and doors open at 7pm. Box office: 01733 265705.
STAMFORD COMEDY CLUB Give them a call or visit the website to check who’s headlining this month’s comedy special at the Stamford Arts Centre on March 18 but support comes from Carly Smallman and Richard Sandling on March 18. Tickets: £12 (£10, £8 students and groups). Box office: 01780 763203.

ALL HAIL THE ESPERNATORS! For the first time in ESP history I finished on the winning team at the magazine's annual staff party quiz last month. As part of The Espernators (copyright Lydia Fahy) we emerged victorious against teams led by other ESP writers. It was, if I say so myself a superb performance. Everyone played their part including Becca who got a question right about Shakespeare, or was it Big Brother? (just kidding Becs!) Our prize for winning was bottles of Meadow Brook wine which tasted so sweet and fruity it conjured up the image of Kelly Brook skipping through a sunny meadow on her way to lovingly make the wine by crushing grapes between her ample assets* …Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, a big thank you to all my fellow Espernators: Lydia, Lauren, Andrea, Becca, Mike, Mrs Mike, Sue & Alison. Cheers everyone! *In order to respect Kelly Brook's privacy (and also because I don't want her to sue me) I’ve decided not to photoshop a picture that demonstrates this 'new' way of winemaking but I'm sure if you close your eyes and think hard enough you'll be able to imagine it…

March’s Comedy Club headliner Neil Dougan is a rare treat, not often seen performing outside his native Ireland. New Act of the Year Julian Dean’s brilliant deadpan style and killer punchlines will leave you gasping for breath while Scottish Comedian of the Year John Gavin’s hilarious story-telling ensures your sides’ll be aching. Compered by Kevin McCarthy, warm-up comedian for Jools Holland, this month is bound to be a sell-out. Tickets cost from £10 and doors open at 7pm on March 25. Box office: 01733 265705.
THE VOODOO STANDS UP Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford continues to attract big TV comedians and this month it’s Simon Evans. The legendary British band were pioneers of the twin-guitar rock that influenced groups from Thin Lizzy to Iron Maiden. You can expect them to perform such classic tracks from their multi-million selling albums as The King Will Come, Throw Down The Sword and Blowin' Free. The band’s 2008 show at the Corn Exchange was a sell out so you need to be quick off the mark for tickets. Box office: 07828 032241.
