MATT’S GOT HEART
Matt and Jess
Matt Cardle’s been a busy guy. His new single Amazing hit the charts, he’s just started his tour, is supporting Sport Relief 2012 and even found time for a chat with ESP’s Mikey Clarke…
about releasing the songs I wrote before the X Factor. I was at a different place in my life back then. Saying that, I know a lot of the hardcore fans have managed to get hold of my original material.”
The X Factor winner’s debut album Letters has gone platinum with over 300,000 sales. It’s clearly been heard by many, but for those that aren’t familiar with it; the singer describes it as – “Something for everyone. I know that’s such a cliché answer but I really think that. We didn’t write songs to appeal to everyone but it just turns out that after picking the best ones, there was a real mix. There’s a real soulful sound to some tracks, others are very rocky, and some have been stripped right back – just me with my guitar.”
So what’s life been like since winning the X Factor? “Things are really good. This is my life dream. I picked up a guitar when I was just five and ever since, I’ve wanted to write an album. I still can’t believe that’s happened… and that the album reached No.2 in the charts.” Matt continued – “I don’t feel like I’ve made it quite yet though. I want to keep getting better and I’m going to make sure I put in the hard work so that happens.”
I caught up with Matt at the launch of radio station Heart Cambridgeshire where he performed the single Amazing which he describes as – “just a great love song” – in front of an intimate crowd including breakfast show presenter Kev Lawrence and presenter Toby Anstis.
Matt’s a great solo artist but I was interested to see if has any collaborations in his sights yet. “I really want to cement myself first before working with other artists,” he revealed. “I’d like to prove myself so that singers want to work with me too.” After giving it more thought, Matt confessed – “Chris Martin from Coldplay is my hero. If I had to give a name of one person I’d like to work with it would be Chris. I love his song writing skills and love the band.” Although it’s not been long since the release of Matt’s album, it looks like a second isn’t far behind. “I’ve been writing songs way before the X Factor so there’s a lot of material lying about. My manager heard one song recently that’s been hiding away on my emails and was gutted that he hadn’t heard it before we released the album. I don’t know how I’d feel

As a chilled out performer, I wondered how Matt felt about more outrageous acts like Lady Gaga. I was quite surprised to find him pretty enthusiastic –“I think she’s brilliant! I think her promoters are brilliant as well. When it came out that she may have man parts, it was ridiculous but people still looked. Everyone was talking about it. And it’s been one thing or another with her since.” Matt joked – “I may have to try out a similar publicity stunt!”
And how did Matt end up on the show that made him a nationwide celebrity? He explained – “My ex-girlfriend’s mate filmed me singing at my local pub and decided to upload it to the X Factor website. I spent hours trying to stop her but she wasn’t having any of it. Even after the X Factor got in touch I didn’t want to go. A friend kindly explained to me that if I didn’t take the opportunity, he would
beat me up. And the rest is history.” Not being one to turn down an opportunity myself, Matt is now aware that he’s more than welcome to perform at my wedding this June. He has my business card and will be (cough, cough)… getting in touch. And what’s Matt up to now? You may have recently seen the reality TV star proudly wearing an official Sport Relief T-shirt (available at sportsdirect.com stores and online). I’ve no doubt that he wears it with pride as Matt has seen for himself how the money raised really can make the world of difference to people’s lives, both here in the UK and overseas. On a recent trip to Southampton and Tanzania, Matt met people whose lives have been transformed thanks to money raised through Sport Relief. So not only is Matt a pleasure to talk to, he’s down-to-earth, does a lot for charity, and in the words of our Face of ESP (Jess Lockhart) he’s even better looking in person. It’s just not fair fellas!

TOUCHY ABI WAS NO FRENCH BIRD According to a French study, single women who are touched on the arm by a man are more likely to give him their phone number. So why, when a few years ago I touched Abi Titmuss on the arm, did she call security?
JAKE DRIVES HOME FOR POLE POSITION FUNDRAISER So how did a teenager who failed his first attempt at A-levels and was fired from McDonald’s for ‘having no communication skills’ become one of the most enviable TV presenters on the gogglebox? I caught up with Jake in the pit lane before the lights turned green for race start… Needless to say you’re in a great job but how did you get into it?
Pep and Jake Humphrey
Some of Peterborough’s most vulnerable children will be getting the support they need thanks to the generosity of local business people who raised more than £10,000 with the help of popular sports presenter Jake Humphrey. TV’s Formula One frontman for the Beeb – who was born in our city – came home to host a special fundraiser by the NSPCC Peterborough Business Support Group at the Holiday Inn last month. It was a great night and top marks to organiser Carol Bunning for bringing one of the friendliest and most genuine TV personalities I’ve interviewed to the city. No event would be complete without the responsibility of compering and auctioneering going to Heart’s Kev Lawrence. He may be sporting a Damon Hill-like goatee these days but nobody can deny what a fine job Kev did in encouraging people to go wild with their cash at the auction. And because it was all for a good cause prizes like a cut and style at Nicky Clark’s hair salon in London went for £500! One bidder even secured a day for four at the Red Bull Racing factory in Milton Keynes for an impressive £3,100. Jake’s own auction donation was a Monaco 2010 framed VIP pass worn by him and signed by race winner Mark Webber, which was bought for £900. A former pupil at Queen’s Drive Infant School, Jake retains fond memories of the seven years he spent living in Peterborough. His family home was near the Norfolk pub, he distinctly remembers summer weekends at Ferry Meadows and just as I did when I was a boy, sitting on the sloping walls of the fountains in Queensgate. His first memory of football matches was going to Posh with his dad but with the onset of adulthood Jake defected to the dark side and is now a passionate Norwich City supporter (although he insists Posh is his second team).

“I realise I’m in a fortunate position doing a job a lot of people would like to do and I’m proud and honoured to be doing it. My TV career kind of unfolded in front of me, I found something I was good at and loved. But it all started when I was a runner on Rapture TV. I got a break presenting a show in place of a guy who called in sick and that led to presenting children’s TV but it was sport I really wanted to work on and I just kept chasing my goal until one day the BBC put their faith in me!”
So is this season going to be another master class by Vettel and Red Bull in winning the championship? “Seb and the car are peaking at the same time. Last season he was a much better driver than the year previous and he absolutely blew Mark Webber out of the water. That’s a measure of how good he is because Mark is a fantastic driver too. But the car is king and the car is more than half of the battle. A great driver in a poor car still won’t win a race and at the moment Red Bull are amazing.”
You travel the world covering F1 but surely it’s been nice to come home for this event? “Yes it has. It made me smile driving into the city for this event and going past Peterborough District Hospital where I was born and seeing it all shut down! But in all seriousness it’s really nice to come back home and little things bring back great memories. The NSPCC here in Peterborough are doing some incredible work and I was keen to support them. Something like £500,000 has been raised since 2006 and it’s all been spent locally.” What’s the best thing about your job? “The best thing is also the worst thing due to the fact it’s so draining and exhausting working from country to country and adjusting to different climates and time zones. I’m also dealing with two pundits (Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard) who aren’t particularly disciplined when it comes to live television! That doesn’t help when you’re on air for hours on end without an autocue but I guess that’s what makes it all fantastic too.” And what have you been doing since the end of last season’s F1 championship? “I’ve been preparing to present track cycling during the Olympics. Plus, attending loads of meetings to ensure BBC viewers continue to get the best out of watching F1 following changes to the sport’s rights that Sky now play a part in. We’ve been working hard to keep it compelling and impressive. The BBC is also focused on getting the best out of the Euros this summer. I’ll be working on that football coverage and later in 2012 the Sports Personality of the Year.”
Jess and Jake Can former world champion Kimi Raikkonen seriously challenge on his return to the sport in a Lotus Renault? “Lotus will go into the season a week behind everyone else in terms of testing due to a chassis issue they’ve had but the return of Kimi is great for the team and for F1. Kimi will definitely be one to watch but don’t write off Mark Webber. I saw Mark recently and he’s driven, relaxed and fitter than ever. It’s the first time a quarter of the grid are world champions. There are six of them out there gunning for repeat glory but I still wouldn’t bet against Vettel doing it for the third time.” And finally, was Ayrton Senna the greatest? “Without doubt. I would have loved to have seen him race in my time presenting. Right from the beginning he had the edge – he was incredible. At the start of his F1 career he took an uncompetitive car in a Toleman almost to a win at Monaco and that kind of feat doesn’t happen anymore. He was at the back of the grid in the rain, the car was moving around even in a straight line and despite this he continued to push the car to its limits. He ended up almost beating Alain Prost in what was a truly remarkable performance. He was simply the most competitive and dramatic driver of his era.”
GOOD LUCK ‘HITMAN HUGHES’ AND THE BOYS Best of luck to former Face of ESP Lauren Hughes and the rest of the ESF Sports stable with special mentions to my compatriots Petch, Doms, Mickey, Paolo and George who’ll be lacing up their boxing gloves in aid of Sue Ryder at the Holiday Inn on Saturday March 3 for a night of white collar boxing. MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Mother
It’s Mother’s Day this month so it’d be rude of me not to compile a list of words that remind me of my mamma: Drama, pasta e fasul, anxiety, tradition, smile, work, grey roots, honest, blood pressure, fried peppers and sausage, duty, garden, respect, fried macs, genuine, blatant, opening my letters and unconditional love.
BRILLIANT BEEMER SAYS ADIOS! It was supposed to be my turn. I’d been waiting a month but then the heartbreaking call from TJ came in… “Pep, I have some bad news. James is taking the S1000RR to a high speed circuit in Spain so I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until April to throw your leg over her now.” I was devastated. The hottest thing on two wheels stood me up for a boring ride along the Costa Brava and a trip to sunny Seville. My promise of a romantic blast on some damp B-roads and maybe a ride out to Sawtry obviously didn’t push her beautifully made switchgear. Bidding her farewell, I couldn’t hold myself back – I lost control momentarily when this photo was taken – I just had to have her. I apologise to my sponsors Balderston for the sudden outburst of uncontrollable lust. April will soon be here. In the meantime, in the words of Celine Dion… “My love will go on…”
TAIO CRUZ’S UK DJ AT HALO If Krappe is your surname then you get my respect for being taken seriously as a successful club promoter. That’s why James (Krappe) deserves a mention for his Official Club Nights at Halo, which our Face of ESP Jessica Lockhart and many other revelers have told me is a cracking night. The next one on Friday March 9 features KrystalRoxx, the official UK DJ for Taio Cruz. Halo will once again be home to glam house / chart remixes and smooth and sexy RnB. Looking good is mandatory as there’ll be a TV crew and photographer on hand to grab shots of the party crowd. Girls can get a 'ladies pass' and half price drinks all night long. I’ll wear a dress then. Mention ESP on the door and you’ll get in for £3 before 11pm or £5 entry after. For details call Halo on 01733 343035.

Where to catch great live comedy this month…
This year’s Sports Relief is just around the corner. It takes place between March 23-25 with the aim of raising some serious cash for vulnerable people across the UK and the world's poorest countries. If you fancy going the extra mile locally, and doing your bit for charity then you can choose to take on either one, three or six miles at Ferry Meadows amongst other places. You can enter online at www.bbc.co.uk/sportrelief. Myself and some of the ESP team will be taking part so if you're interested we'll see you there.

WHERE'S MY MATT CARDLE QUOTE? I didn't find out ESP reporter Mikey Clarke had interviewed X Factor singer Matt Cardle till after it happened. (You can read it on P.12) It's a shame because I would've liked Mikey to get a quote off Matt for me... Not for my page, but to paint my living room. Before he ruined that Biffy Clyro song, Cardle used to be a painter and decorator. In fact, the pictures at the relaunch party of Heart FM look like Cardle brought along his paint gun and gave Kev Lawrence and Toby Anstis' faces a quick spray tan! Altogether now – “When two tans collide they fade together…”

Brett shares with you his cocktail of mafia, drugs and stripping with stories guaranteed to make you laugh even though you feel like you’re sitting through someone else’s therapy! This month’s comedy at Stamford Arts Centre includes Nick Revell a well established comedian who’ll make you laugh and think, Gary Colman who Frank Skinner rates as – ‘Highly inventive and very funny’ – and Rachel Parris a superb musical comic and finalist in the 2010 Funny Women Awards. Tickets are £12 (£10, £8 students and groups). Box office: 01780 763203.
And it wouldn't be Sport Relief without David Walliams taking on a swimming challenge. His 140 mile swim along the Thames raised more than £1m, saw him rescue a dog and dodge a few floaters – but that's enough about Amanda Holden and his other judges on Britain's Got Talent...

This one includes my old Edinburgh Festival flat mate comedian Patrick Monahan (see www.espmag.co.uk for my interview with Patrick).
Before you turn to the Paparazzi page and see if you can spot anyone you know, may I direct you to www.espmag.co.uk for a fantastic Q&A I did with comedian Stewart Francis. You may have seen him on Live At The Apollo or Mock The Week where he's a regular guest with his quick-fire one liners and deadpan delivery. Stamford CALLING
Matty Speaks... The organisers of the Riverside Festival tell me things are developing nicely and as this year’s event will be ticket only for the first time they’re advising you don’t hang about.
It was good to see Stamford charity Anna’s Hope benefit substantially from the Holiday On Ice show Tropicana, and it sounds like they’ve found a new celebrity friend in Robin Cousins. A cash donation from the show plus bucket collections raised £5,000 for the charity which helps children with brain tumours. Robin Cousins, Dancing On Ice judge and creator of the Tropicana ice show took time out to have photos taken with some of the children and families who are being supported through their treatment and rehabilitation by the charity. Carole Hughes from Anna’s Hope told us – “Robin is now a friend and a life long supporter of Anna's Hope which is really appreciated. He has a lovely caring rapport with the children and their parents which is lovely. Every penny raised will go towards funding the charities aims.”
What’s you favourite Stamford restaurant / take away? “As a band we've come to the decision that you can't beat a Zorba 4.”
THE STONES IN STAMFORD
Who is your favourite current band?
It’s a great month for live music in my home town this month and the Corn Exchange is playing its part hosting Rolling Stones tribute act The Stones. Universally known as, the greatest rock and roll band in the World, the real Rolling Stones have sold over 200 million albums worldwide, with hits such as Satisfaction, Start Me Up, Honkey Tonk Women and Jumping Jack Flash to name but a few.
“A dream festival would consist of the Harrington Blues… Kasabian, the Rifles, the Rolling Stones and Chas ‘n’ Dave.”
What five bands would feature on your dream festival line-up?
What four celebs/musicians would you invite to a dinner party? “We would invite Keith Moon, Noel Gallagher, Elvis Presley and Angelos Epithemo.”
Having worked on the actual Rolling Stones’ tour and rubbed shoulders with the boys (bit of name dropping!) I’ll be doing my best to catch this night myself and see if they’re on fire as much as Mick and the lads were in St. Petersburg! Catch them on Saturday March 3, tickets are £16 from the box office: 01780 766455.
Mama Liz’s presents the Best of British Night at the Voodoo Lounge this month with three hotly tipped bands of the moment. The Vex are from London and have a raw, energetic 60s sound and a dry punk attitude, the lads put on an explosive show and are a must see! Support comes from The Conroys, a Sheffield based mod/indie band and are fine purveyors of angry/melodic tunes! ... "Angry power pop made in broken Britain!" And of course we must never forget Stamford’s own darlings, the Harrington Blues who are going from strength to strength every time they grace the stages at the min, with gigs in London and nationwide under their belt; it can’t be long till they’re smashing a stage at one of the bigger festivals in the near future! The live bands are backed by indie/mod music from DJ Mod Scatter. Don’t miss out on this great live night on Saturday March 31, tickets are just £5. www.espmag.co.uk
“Our favourite current band is THE HARRINGTON BLUES.” (Very Noely Liam-ish of you! Lol)
Now The Stones bring to the stage all the energy and excitement of a live Rolling Stones concert. This is not a ‘tongue in cheek’ approach, but a serious tribute to their music billed as – ‘a show so close to the original that you will simply not believe your eyes or your ears’!

For my Q&A this month I caught up with Stamford’s answer to Jimmy Quadrophenia and dare I say it ‘friend’ of mine Richard Sorbi. Sorbi plays bass in the up-and-coming hit makers the Harrington Blues! With a little help from the rest of the cast of Harrington’s he very nicely answered a few camp questions for me!
“Our favourite night out in Stamford would have to be us playing in Mama Liz's Voodoo Lounge, and when we're not gigging you'll probably find us in the Lord Burghley.”
They’re still looking for volunteers to help make the festival happen so if you fancy doing your bit, either head down to the next planning meeting on March 4 at 5pm at Mama Liz’s or call Jenny on 01778 343337.

paparazzi Caught in the act? JAKE HUMPHREY HITS TOWN AND KINGS GO TO THE PROM Former city boy Jake Humphrey made a return to Peterborough at a fundraising dinner in aid of the NSPCC Peterborough Business Support Group, and proved he was number one with Formula One fans in the city. The BBC sports presenter who hosts the grand prix coverage from all over the world mixed with guests and happily posed for photos for ESP Magazine’s Paparazzi team with Pep Cipriano behind the lens. It was then a return to the Holiday Inn for a very different event – the Kings School prom! Our photographer Chris Brudenell captured the action as students turned out in style. They’d certainly pulled out all the stops and donned their glad rags for a great night out. See more of our Paparazzi pics on www.espmag.co.uk and on our facebook page.

CELEBS
Emeli Sandé
She was the Critics’ Choice at the Brits and she’s certainly ours too. Sharon McAllister chats to Emeli Sandé and finds out if she really is in heaven following her latest success…
I
love the hair, I love the songs and I really love the voice so speaking to Emeli Sandé it was pleasant not to be disappointed by the lady herself.
With all eyes on her following the Brits, the success of her No. 1 album Our Version of Events and a headline tour next month this girl has well and truly stepped out of the shadows. Emeli has been around in the music industry far longer than you might realise as a very successful songwriter. She’s written songs for the likes of Tinie Tempah, Professor Green and Chipmunk through to Cheryl Cole, the Saturdays and even Susan Boyle! Having then crept into our consciousness providing vocals on tracks like Read All About It with Professor Green and then her own single Heaven, she’s truly stepped out into the limelight. I wonder if it’s all been part of a careful plan? “I really wanted to make sure that when I came out and introduced myself as an artist I had the right music and everything, I really wanted to take care and time with it,” Emeli explains. “But I was writing for a couple of years before… it wasn’t really planned, but this is the way it turned out and I’m really glad I had that experience before now.” The big surprise from this talented young woman is that she’s equally brainy as she is musically gifted. Emeli

was once studying medicine – specifically clinical neuro-science! She may well have become a doctor had she not got a break in the industry and decided to quit Glasgow University in favour of music. “I always knew I wanted to be a musician from when I was very young and that was essentially what I wanted to do, but I also loved school, science and learning and medicine, and never found a way to put them all together. They’re all different sides of me and it got to a point when I thought I really want to do music and the door of opportunity opened and I thought I had to do it. It was never a case of not enjoying medicine, I just knew that music was the one thing I’d loved as a kid.” So should someone keel over in front of her would she be able to save the day? “Well I know my basic first aid,” she laughs “but I’d definitely need to revise for something more complicated!” Writing songs since the age of 11 while growing up in rural Scotland, Emeli was lucky to have support from her parents which has helped maintain her progress into music. “My parents have always been very supportive and very encouraging of what I do whether it’s medicine or music so I guess it comes from them and how they brought us up. They always say if you work hard at something why shouldn’t it work out for
you, so I think that attitude is what I’ve adopted.” Emeli has a very distinctive look with an amazing blonde quiff and a style of her own but isn’t overly obsessed with her image and the latest fashions – “It’s not really on my top of priorities, I like to express myself how I look and change my hair when I want. I really love fashion and finding really cool dresses and things like that but it would never come before music, I think it’s just a fun part of it.” Down her arm is a tattoo of the artist Frida Khalo – a tribute to someone whose qualities she admires – “Frida was a very strong woman,” Emeli explains “and reminds me that you have to be quite brave in what you do and put yourself out there and say ‘this is who I am’, and I try to adopt that when I’m making anything.
“I would never want to be limited in what I can do and be branded. I love changing and trying new things out.” Next month Emeli will be on tour but surprise, surprise she’ll still be penning new tunes for herself and others. There’s just no stopping her! “I’m going to be writing with Alicia Keys again which will be good and I’ve been working with Labrinth on his new album so lots of different things and I’ve been working with the original Sugababes as well. I really want to get back into writing, I really love that part of it.” www.emelisande.com Read our full interview with Emeli on www.espmag.co.uk
A picture paints a thousand words… time to face up to your skin issues. They say beauty’s only skin deep but wouldn’t it be great to really see what was going on beneath the surface? Well you can now literally map out your skin care with an amazing new personalised skin analysis system and our Face of ESP Jessica Lockhart was keen to give it a try. The Clarity Skin Advisor System 1000 at My Body Essentials on London Road is a great new addition to their skin care and provides an indepth skin analysis by photographing deep below what we see in the mirror. All you do is have an image taken of your face from various angles and it’ll reveal any sun damage, open pores or wrinkles on a diagram so its clearly obvious which areas need treatment. This ‘skin map’ is then prepared into a personal report detailing the problems, appropriate treatments and preventative measures for the future. By comparing images before and after treatment you can visibly see how effective it is. We can all see sun spots, wrinkles and thread veins on the surface but what’s going on underneath can be quite a surprise when you see it for yourself! Although the team at MBE were able to identify small areas needing attention this new system (which is one step down from those used by dermatologists in hospitals) allows them to see a much broader area and to assess skin damage at a far deeper level. It’s taken the subjective human element out of the whole analysis process.
We know Jessica looks gorgeous but like most of us, sessions in the sun have caused a few underlying potential problems for the future which she can now tackle. If you’re concerned you’ve spent too long in the sun or under sunbeds don’t despair, you can repair some of the damage and do something about it. Treatments are also available to help reduce acne and scarring, blemishes, rosacea, age spots and other skin problems. Treatments range from light and heat therapy to cosmeceuticals – a specialist range of scientifically proven creams and lotions which can both correct problems and help prevent them in future. These can only be prescribed with a consultation and the team at MBE can give expert advice. MBE, London Road, Peterborough, PE2 8AR. Tel: 01733 305102. www.mybodyessentials.co.uk

neons anD nuDes Neon and nude is set to be the stand-out trend of the season. Update your look and celebrate this bright new craze with show-stopping nail polishes and playful make-up. Nail the trend with a helping hand from Nails Inc and the launch of their Neon & Nude Collection (£22). With minis of three chic nude shades and three ultrabright neons you’ll be perfectly equipped to mix bold vivid brights with subtle nude shades this spring. Jermyn Street is the perfect shade for a sophisticated daytime look whilst Portobello (a coral neon) adds an intense vibrant punch to any outfit as well as looking fab on toenails.
accent on an otherwise nude face.” I completely agree. The only way to really make your lips pop is to have a subtle look on both the cheeks and eyes. Alternatively, you can play up the eyes, as long as lips and cheeks are kept nude. The centerpiece of the collection is the new eye palette which features six classic Bobbi shades that are sure to look flattering on everyone. Pair any of the colors with a bright lip, such as the Cosmic Pink lip gloss (£17), for a look that embodies fresh, effortless cool. Either of the two eye-popping shades (Ultra Violet Shimmer Wash and Bluebell Eyeshadow, £15.50) create a perfectly playful and stunning look when teamed with a nude lip.
OPI, famous for its huge range of fabulous colours and effects, have some great shades for carrying off the neon or nude look too. Bubble Bath really is the nudest of nudes and I am well and truly addicted! This sheer soft pink shade makes your nails look like they barely have any polish on them at all but makes for this season’s most sophisticated nail colour palette, giving a fabulously natural, shiny and well-groomed appearance. Very feminine! And if neon isn’t in your nail polish comfort zone then ease yourself into the trend gently with OPI’s Atomic Orange. Bobbi Brown also covers the big beauty trend with her new Spring Collection. Bobbi says – “The most modern way to wear colour is an

Lisa Eldridge for No. 7 has created a similarly mixed palette of bright and muted tones – there’s an Enlightening Highlighter (£13), a Brightening Eye Palette (£13) and two bold Cream Blush (£10) colours – Blooming Pink and Blossoming Pink – one for a full-on flourish of colour, the other for a natural coral flush. And there are similar lipstick shades – Blooming Pink to blow the cobwebs away which I officially love and Blossoming Pink to complement a nude look.
Combining nude shades and a natural face with a pop of bright lip colour is my favorite way to bring together an electrifying selection of colour for your spring 2012 look. Experiment this season and find out what’s yours!

Facebook encourages a Fag Free Peterborough The NHS has launched a Facebook page – Quit Together Peterborough – to help encourage the one in four smokers in the city to quit smoking. The page encourages smokers to make an online pledge to stop smoking as well as to raise money for the British Heart Foundation by inviting their Facebook friends to sponsor them. It’s been launched just in time for National No Smoking Day on Wednesday March 14, aiming to reduce tobacco related death and illness by motivating smokers to quit together. The Facebook page is a brilliant idea as it gives people trying to quit access to an array of support services and information from the NHS to kick the habit, as well as allowing them to share their stories and offer others help and encouragement. The NHS is hoping that the power of social media and peer support will greatly increase people’s chances of giving up. Online tools such as a smoking calculator help you calculate the savings you could make if you quit and what this money could buy. Additionally, you can even download an iPhone app to give you daily messages of support. For more details search Facebook for ‘Quit Together Peterborough’ or for offline support call 0800 376 5655 or email pass@peterboroughpct.nhs.uk. So get online, take the leap and make a real attempt to quit this March!

Jess is in the zone… Feelgood Fitness launches Myzone – the fitness monitor that’ll help you get on the move! The gym in Bretton is the only one in the city to use the newly launched Myzone belt – a fantastic new gadget that makes any form of movement measurable and makes getting healthy your way, easier than ever. Our Face of ESP Jessica Lockhart keeps in shape as she works in fitness and teaches Zumba but now she can keep track of all of her movement, heart rate, calories burned and more by wearing the Myzone belt. The good thing is you don’t have to be a member of a gym to use it, an expert to understand it or a fitness addict to get the best out of it – even taking the kids to the park will be recorded! It’s a simple device that holds the data of whatever movement you’ve done and breaks everything down into colours so it’s easy to gauge what level of activity you’ve done. If you want to work your body a bit harder or lose weight you just need to step things up a bit and get yourself into the next colour zone so no stressing over heart rate figures. This new idea is motivational too as you can challenge yourself to improve or pit yourself against a friend. It measures calories, effort and also Myzone points which you can build up. Feelgood Fitness run a reward scheme so the more Myzone points the more prizes you could win which is a real incentive to train harder. You don’t have to be a member to benefit from Myzone though, just pop into Feelgood Fitness each week to download your information to the computer and see how you’re doing. tailored to you. If you play footy, go running or just walk the dog it’ll all be calculated to see if you’re doing enough for your particular age, weight and ability. If you are a member of the gym, wear it in class and it’ll be easy to make sure you’re working to the right level for you personally as you won’t have to keep up with others in the class – you’ll all just be aiming to get in your personal ‘green zone’ for example. The Myzone belt is £50 to buy and it’s £5 a month to download and analyse your data.

FOOD REVIEW
The tastefully relaxing interior of North Street Bar – the perfect venue for pre-dinner or after dinner drinks.
CLARKE’S RESTAURANT 19 North Street, Peterborough, PE1 2RA. Tel: 01733 892681 Clarke’s Restaurant on North Street really is Peterborough’s hidden gem. The phrase fine dining is perfectly suited to this eatery, especially if you fancy a little something that’s going to stretch your pallet. The restaurant itself is very classy, minimal (less is more after all) and opens up a whole new dining experience. You won’t find your table too close to anyone else’s, so it’s great if you want a quiet romantic meal with your better half. We had already set our expectations quite high as we’d heard some great comments from people who’ve already experienced the food here, and were greeted by a very well presented waitress who promptly took us to our table. Already impressed with the look of the place and the service so far, we ordered our drinks and let head chef Lee Clarke choose a selection of dishes from the menu to prepare for us – we hadn’t seen the menu so the entire meal was going to be a surprise.
Fresh bread was also served along with the first course – even that was to die for. We were told the bread had been baked just a few hours before, and all dishes are homemade and freshly prepared on the day. After devouring the first course and all the bread (not knowing there were four more courses to come) out came the second course – homemade Brawn (boiled pig’s head) with Dorset crab and citrus salad. Now we hadn’t a clue what this was when we tried it, and I can only describe the presentation as near perfect again – it looked similar to the filling of a pork pie but without the pastry. It wasn’t quite to my taste but would suit someone who’s a fan of more adventurous flavours.
“The phrase fine dining is perfectly suited to this eatery, especially if you fancy a little something that’s going to stretch your pallet” After a short while the first course was brought to our table – it was faultless! The dish was confit chicken leg, garlic, black pudding and quail’s egg, and was so perfectly presented I didn’t want to ruin it up by eating it (but I did of course!). I’d describe the portion size as a ‘teasing taster’ of the amazing food the chef can cook, with so much flavour packed into this delicate little dish.
Following the Brawn was stone bass, fondant potato, parsnip purée and crispy carrots. I’m not usually a massive fish fan but having tried the sea bass I can officially say I’m converted – it was delicious. The potato fondant was oozing with moorish flavours and the parsnip purée was a perfect accompaniment to the fish – this was definitely my favourite dish.
The fourth dish was fillet of beef wellington, ox tongue and cheek with textures of onion. We spotted the beef wellington straight away but didn’t realise we had ox tongue on our plate. At this point head chef Lee came to our table and was keen for us to try the unknown ingredient. The ox cheek was so tender it just fell apart; the ox tongue was full of flavour but again is an acquired taste and texture. The mini beef wellington was simply mouthwatering – everything from the pastry to the meat itself. There was just the right amount of sauce drizzled on the plate, along with tiny cubes of turnip which seemed to break up the meatiness on the plate and added a little kick. Finally we were presented with a dessert to share – texture of chocolate, which is every woman’s dream! It was stunning to look at not to mention how it tasted. There was a mini, melt in the middle chocolate pud, white chocolate jelly, Clarke’s own version of an Oreo cookie, and a small taster of chocolate ganache (similar to a chocolate truffle) it really was a wonderful mixture of chocolately delights! The menu changes daily with the market, and vegetarian choices are available on request. Two courses are £30 and four courses £40, while a three course lunch is £15. We were both incredibly impressed with the quality of the food and you won’t find anything else like this in Peterborough. Lee’s knowledge and training is from his time in London and you definitely get top London standards – he knows his food, what flavours go well together and how to present it in the most stunning way. Natural chemicals in plant foods are known to protect heal and repair our body. Eating a diet high in various colours from plant foods will bring a host of phyto-chemicals (chemicals from plants) which are known to deliver health benefits along with the vitamins, minerals and fibre they also contain.
Cancer prevention
The ‘rainbow’ assortment from our plant foods bring green, red, white, blue, purple, yellow and orange pigments which deliver these special chemicals to support health.

This month let’s add a good splash of green. In the Chinese five elements the spring time is represented by the colour green as it symbolises new growth, renewal and regeneration. One major vegetable that has many health benefits is broccoli or the little trees as the kids (and the big ones amongst us) call them. Broccoli is a member of the cabbage and cruciferous family which is native to Europe, (possibly for over 2,000 years).

The phyto-chemicals found in broccoli are compounds
GREATEST SOUNDTRACK OF THEM ALL Sad news about the death of Whitney Houston but with all the dramas and ups and downs she went through in her 48 years, it surely can’t be long before they make a Hollywood movie of her life. No idea if it’ll be any good or not but one thing’s for sure; the soundtrack will be cracking.
SULFORAPHANE /INDOLE – 3 – CARBINOL may help in –
Improving the liver’s ability to detoxify toxins Removing unfavourable types of oestrogen
Boiling broccoli to death is not advised as it reduces the effectiveness of these special compounds, however slightly steaming it can improve and make them more readily available (3-5 mins only). Broccoli sprouts are also worth a mention as they contain much higher concentrations of these phyto chemicals. These can be eaten in a number of ways such as slightly steamed, added to salads, roasted or blended up and added to mince, sauces etc to disguise it for the kids or the big kids amongst us who find it hard to take!

PERCEPTIVE WAY TO GO FOR A NAUGHTY WEEKEND On the way to a hotel for a much need ed weekend break away, Mr T says “che ck out this new app I’ve downloaded, it’s a voice recognition sat nav, listen…” And conf idently he announced into his phone – “The Swan Hotel”. There was a slight pause whilst the info computed, before the Stephen Haw kins voice announced – “you have stated Yo! Again the slight pause, then the familiar monotone voice clicked in – “you have stated... Porn. Is that correct?” Porn?! It was our anni versary weekend and we’d got a night away from the kids – did it really think we needed its directions for anything other than the hotel?!

sure it’s F-Gas compliant (nasty gasses for which there are stringent rules and regs these days!). When the heat is on that handy desk fan will prove highly effective at launching your paperwork into orbit but is utterly useless at cooling you down, and we all know how productive we are when it’s too hot! If air con is well maintained it costs 30 % less to run and that has to be worthwhile when everyone’s counting the pennies. Think about it now, prevention is definitely better than cure. Rob says their secret to success is a simple one – “My team are all local, we offer a good service, communicate well with clients and are focussed. We’re competitive and fast paced and our 25 years of experience means we have a great understanding of the job whether it’s for a homeowner or a business. We work on projects from £1,500 - £1.5million.” You might not think it but air conditioning isn’t just about keeping you cool – it’s also an efficient heating system ideal for the home and any size of business. It even ticks the green boxes as it reuses the hot hair generated during cooling to heat water and the building.
Shivering in the chill or sweltering in the heat… don’t sweat it! Discover ‘Peterborough’s best kept secret’ – RS Air conditioning – local guys with all the skills and expertise right on your doorstep! While many other companiess are feeling the heat and going under, RS Air Conditioning’s kept its cool and has actually expanded during the recession. A sure sign they’re doing something right!
We love a success story and with recommendations flying forth from all types of businesses they’ve worked with, it looks like Rob Tysoe and his guys are the ones you’re going to call.
Whether you’re reading this in your one man office or on the top floor of a large organisation, whether you need a portable unit or a fully installed heating/cooling system, these are the guys who can help.
As well as working locally with a number of well known names such as the city council at Bayard Place and One Leisure at Huntingdon, RS Air Conditioning also works with companies up and down the country such as Waitrose, and as far afield as Jersey. Running a business can involve a lot of blood, sweat and tears... but at least you can ditch the ‘sweat’ and make the day to day conditions a breeze with RS Air Conditioning’s help. They take on everything from homes to major installations, can offer servicing and maintenance to make sure your existing air con doesn’t pack up, and check to make

“We have used RS Air Conditioning Services for all our requirements, both new fit and maintenance since 2008. They are extremely helpful and offer a thoroughly professional, value for money service. I would have no reservations in recommending their service to others.” Steve Yarham, Ede & Ravenscroft “Harston Mill has been using RS Air Conditioning services for the past four years. I've found them to be very quick at responding to issues, particularly in an emergency. The engineers are always polite, courteous and highly skilled. A lot of work is out of hours so we need trustworthy and honest engineers which RS always provides. They were commissioned to install replacement air-con systems for Harston Mill, and helped enormously with obtaining the Carbon Trust Loan. I'd recommend RS to anyone seeking a new installation or maintenance of an existing system.” Martin Bond, Sagentia

JOHN CARTER
Released: March 9 Cast: Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong Director: Andrew Stanton Some say he’s the legend that influenced the likes of Star Wars – and now Disney is attempting to turn him into a blockbuster franchise. Brought to life in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ centuryold novels, the man affectionately known as ‘John Carter of Mars’ gets his first big-budget makeover. Finding Nemo and WALL-E director Andrew Stanton moves out of his animation comfort zone to helm the special effects-laden movie, which sees relative unknown Taylor Kitsch – from acclaimed TV series Friday Night Lights and as XMen superhero Gambit in 2009’s Wolverine – play the title role.
He stars as a battle-weary former military captain who gets embroiled in a conflict between inhabitants of the Red Planet – in a cast that includes Willem Dafoe, alongside Brit actors Mark Strong, James Purefoy and Samantha Morton – and then rediscovers his humanity with this world on the brink of collapse. But can such an expensive movie succeed without a big star name? Disney certainly thinks so.

Robert Pattinson (The Twilight Saga) attempts to show he can cut it outside of a popular teen franchise in this French drama, which chronicles a young man’s rise to power in Paris via his manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women – with a cast that boasts Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman and Kristin Scott Thomas.
A slimmed-down Jonah Hill (Superbad) and chick-magnet Channing Tatum (GI Joe) star as underachieving cops sent back to school to bring down a dangerous drug ring, in this modern, action-comedy movie reboot of the hit eighties series which starred Johnny Depp (he’s rumoured to be cameoing). Ice Cube co-stars.
Mark Wahlberg headlines this action-thriller as a man forced back into a life of crime after his brother botches a job for Giovanni Ribisi’s (Avatar) ruthless crime lord. But if the former smuggler fails to return from Panama with millions of counterfeit dollars, his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and sons will be next on the hit list.
Jerry Maguire helmer Cameron Crowe directs this amazing true story about a family man (Matt Damon) who takes his two children on an adventure to renovate and re-open a dilapidated zoo in southern California. With the aid of Scarlett Johansson he aims to return the sanctuary to its former glory.
One of the movie surprises of the year is this horror, which sees a woman become involved in a series of unauthorised exorcisms to discover what happened to her accused-of-murder Mum. Despite generally poor reviews and no star names, it only cost a $1 million to make – and shot to box-office Number One in the States.

Aiming to be a new franchise for the younger adult demographic is this much-hyped thriller, which sees boys and girls fight to the death for TV ratings in the futuristic ruins of North America. Jennifer Lawrence (X:Men: First Class), Josh Hutcherson (Journey 2) and Liam Hemsworth (the forthcoming Expendables 2) star.
Those talented guys from Aardman (more specifically Chicken Run) set sail with their latest – and bizarrely-titled – stop-motion capture animation, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists. Hugh Grant voices the captain – aiming for the prestigious pirate of the year award – alongside Martin Freeman and David Tennant.
After notching nearly $500 million worldwide a couple of years back, the cast return with part two of a planned blockbuster ‘gods and monsters’ trilogy. Sam Worthington’s Perseus has to embark on a treacherous quest to the underworld to save Zeus (Liam Neeson) from the clutches of his traitorous son. Co-stars Ralph Fiennes.

Pattinson/Lautner/Stewart and co. ignite a stellar DVD/Blu-ray release month with THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 (March 12). It also boasts three blockbuster computer-generated animations in the form of Shrek prequel PUSS IN BOOTS and HAPPY FEET TWO (both March 26), along with the joint Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson pet project THE ADVENTURES OF TIN-TIN: SECRET OF THE UNICORN (March 19). If thrills and spills are your thing, then Steven Soderbergh’s infectious thriller CONTAGION and sword-andsandals action epic IMMORTALS (both March 5) should do the trick; with the Oscar-nominated ‘Deep South’ drama THE HELP and the Marilyn Monroe-inspired A WEEK WITH MARILYN (both March 12), still fresh in mind after the Academy Awards ceremony.

UFC: UNDISPUTED 3
THE DARKNESS II
(360/PS3)
(PS3/360/PC)
After rushing out the sequel a couple of years back, THQ listened to fans for the third instalment – and have come back fighting with something that is simply knockout.
You have to piece something quite original together in the first-person shooter market to stand out – and for the most part this sequel does just that.
#####
Complex controls have been impressively honed, all round presentation and game modes polished – and inclusion of the PRIDE organisation is a masterstroke.
Even though the roster has been overhauled with new blood, fan favourites are still there (Brock Lesnar, Quinton Jackson etc), but more importantly newcomers can now ‘pick up and play’ instead of just seasoned MMA veterans. Time to tap out.
Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviewing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and Mario & Sonic 2012 Olympics, and Ian Hilling for reviewing UFC: Undisputed 3 and Grand Slam Tennis 2.
KINGDOMS OF AMALUR: RECKONING
The monster is unleashed inside mob boss Jackie Estacado after his ‘family’ is attacked by a mysterious and powerful new enemy.
With shocking (but stylishly implemented) comic-book style violence he uses his demon arm powers to literally tear apart his enemies, which – bar intermittent tedium – is a thoroughly enjoyable jaunt.
FINAL FANTASY XIII-2
(360/PS3/PC)
(PS3/360)
Fate is the name of the game in EA’s latest blockbuster, inked by bestselling author RA Salvatore.
After the original FFXIII version was released to much fanfare (and a Leona Lewis track) two years ago – it heavily disappointed hardcore fans with its linear and more westernised styling.
#####
Your character – brought back from the dead – has no pre-destined course as you manipulate the threads of fate en route to entering the devastating ‘reckoning mode’ across this vast kingdom, which could easily take more than 100 hours to complete.
Despite its combat being more arcade-like than other RPG rivals, this is a vastly enjoyable experience and a worthy entry in the genre canon.
SOULCALIBUR V
#####
But if you’re not a fan of this type of fighter it doesn’t really bring anything new to the party – in terms of combat and game modes – that hasn’t been done before to entice gamers away from Street Fighter IV. If you’re a ‘soul’ fan though – it does what it says on the tin.
GRAND SLAM TENNIS 2
#####
Now those Japanese geniuses at Square Enix have gone back to the drawing board to release a truly gorgeous-looking sequel that’s worthy of the Final Fantasy name. Despite an improved battle system and environments throughout, it’s still hampered by being an acquired taste – but if this is your thing it really is RPG gold.
Throwing together three all-time classics proves a recipe for success as Xbox junkies – and indeed PlayStation freshmen – get their first taste of the legendary series.
There are very few areas of sports gaming that EA don’t dominate – basketball is one, tennis is another.
But with an indifferent control system and lack of engaging game modes, this effort still trails the likes of Top Spin – and is more ‘tour’ than ‘grand slam’.
It’s a fantastic piece of kit, and playing the likes of Uncharted: Golden Abyss (see that and other Sony exclusive launch titles reviewed online) was a simply stunning experience. There’s also a strong selection of third party titles at launch, like EA’s FIFA football and Capcom’s Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.
To sum it up, if you’re a massive Playstation fan and want to have your entire gaming world in the palm of your hands – then welcome to the next generation of handhelds.
##### Go to www.espmag.co.uk for the lowdown on Sony’s six launch titles:
#####
The package consists of PS stalwarts Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on one disc – and in HD Solid Snake looks better than ever.

#####
With combat advancements in recent years, newbies may find the controls a little tedious and aspects of the games a little dated – but this is still a class act.
(3DS)
#####
It comes complete with online gaming ‘on the go’ with full connectivity to your PS3, great back catalogue of PSP games, front and rear facing cameras, dual analogue sticks – and one of the biggest game launches in history.
The only down points are few and far between. If you’ve got a PSP it’s like going from DVD to Blu-ray (as in PS2 to PS3 graphics), so that’s a personal choice. Then there’s the price point (see above) and the need to purchase a memory card (but some come with console packages) – but it’s easy to see where the money’s gone in such an advanced machine.
MARIO & SONIC AT THE LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES
(PS3/360)
It still may not rule the roost after this effort, but it does give it a bloody good smash with superb presentation and graphics – and a great roster of new and old stars from Andy Murray to John McEnroe.
It may not be particularly on the cheap side (around £229 for the Wi-Fi version, £279 with 3G included) but it is without doubt the most advanced handheld ever – with PS3 standard graphics on a 5” OLED touch screen.
(360/PS3/PC)
SoulCalibur V really is a game of two halves.
PLAYSTATION VITA HANDHELD CONSOLE & SONY’S LAUNCH GAMES REVIEWED If you’ve ever wanted a handheld console with the graphical power of a PS3 – then the new PS Vita definitely has the ‘wow’ factor.
METAL GEAR SOLID HD COLLECTION
(360/PS3)
As a 3D beat ’em up it boasts luscious visuals, great arenas, noteworthy multiplayer action – and a better roster that axes the awful inclusion of Star Wars characters in the last version.
#####
Fresh off the back of last month’s Wii offering, Mario and Sonic are back for another crack at gold on Nintendo’s 3D handheld.
#####
Sega’s offering boasts more than fifty Olympic-related sports, but most are quick-fire watered-down events – from the fun track and field to the tedious sailing and weightlifting – with most lacking innovation. With the lack of the Wii version’s excellent ‘Dream Events’ – this just about scrapes onto the podium as an intermittent distraction for youngsters in Olympic year.

MONTH OF MUSIC @ MAMA’S Saturday March 17 will see a lot of people out celebrating St Patrick’s Day and Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford is putting on a great evening where you can celebrate, see some top local bands and help a very good cause called Lucy’s Hope 4 Others.
Four bands are on the bill: Two Point Zero, Recreation Ground Road, Flawless Victory and Latest Gossip. They’re all getting together for this special evening which also features Dave ‘Tucker’ Spencer with a St Patrick’s night disco set. RAFROMAN JOINS MOBO TOUR Good luck to Rafroman from Peterborough. He’s won through to make an appearance at the regional show of the MOBO Unsung 2012 tour which happens on March 1 at the Waterfront in Norwich. It’s a great achievement to have beaten thousands of entrants to the prestigious MOBOs and it came after the panel of industry judges shortlisted Rafroman with two others and then chose him as the winner for the regional gig. Rafroman (AKA Rafiq Dixon) cant wait for Norwich and told me – “The MOBOs are such a huge event and it’s a great opportunity to get more exposure and increase awareness of my work.” A lot of his writing is influenced by the things that go on around him in his life. “My family and my environment have contributed a lot to what I’ve gone through and that comes out in the writing. I’ve supported Tinie Tempah when he visited Liquid here in Peterborough and that was a massive experience. Now it’ll be with some top breakthrough acts on the MOBO scene. I can’t wait!” Some of the hottest new acts in urban music including Lady Leshurr, Clement Marfo & The Frontline are scheduled to appear at the Waterfront. Rafroman has a number of gigs booked on a tour of Wales and the North West starting at the end of March, but first the matter of the MOBO gig on March 1 where I’m sure he’ll be a huge success. Let’s hope this is his big break. Take a look at his video on www.mobo.com.
The St Paddy’s night gig is in the middle of a very busy month at Mama Liz’s which also sees the first heat of the East Midlands Battle of the Bands on Friday March 9. There’s another four band bill on Friday March 23 headed by German three piece, the Lost Rivers in their first UK show, also, Kontakte, the Electric Mainline and Black Light Pioneer. Saturday March 24 is a date for alternative country fans. All the way from Kentucky, USA, the Dirt Daubers headline with the wonderful and enigmatic Miss Quincy & The Showdown, making a very welcome return to the Voodoo Lounge. With support from Southern Discomfort and Old Boy it should be a lively evening. For more info on these gigs and music samples of some of the artistes log on to www.mamaliz.co.uk.

PETERBOROUGH HAS A NEW CITIZEN SMITH Congratulations to Colin Smith and partner, Monique Benoitton, on the birth of their daughter, Eliza Mona on February 9. With, mum Monique being a dancer, singer and choreographer, and dad Colin, busy with his sound systems and his bands Citizen Smith, Brotherhoods Roundabout and The Pigs , it’s likely that Citizen Smith Jnr will have plenty of artistic genes. The text I received told me that from birth Eliza has loads of really dark curly hair… more than dad then!

Ann and Jess

Andy Slater
Goodbye
It’s goodbye to Ann and Jess at the Cherry Tree as they say farewell to pub life this month. Andy Slater pays tribute to the popular couple… and community groups in like the Zipper Club, the Heartfelt Club and Scooter Club.” The pub really has become a community facility and that’s reflected by its success as a business and as a charity fundraiser. As Ann tot’s up on her fingers the amount, Jess helps with the ways they’ve raised it – “Pantos, music days, raffles, theme nights, all sorts!” “It must be in the region of £30,000 we’ve raised for the Musicians Union benevolent fund, Thorpe Hall, Help For Heroes and other local charities,” says Ann, visibly proud. That’s an amazing accomplishment for a couple who run a seven day a week business and it should be recognised as that. It’s also a great football pub with Posh fans enjoying a few beers before the match or watching a big game on the box. Jess recounts a story about a World Cup match between his beloved Italy and England – “England won and this lady says to me, ‘I bet you’re gutted Jess’, I said a why? My till is a full to brimming!” – spoken in his best Flettonese and with a true business brain!
Jess and Ann Caprio are the embodiment of the pub landlord and lady; I wouldn’t be surprised that should you have the inclination to look up the term in a thesaurus they’d be referenced. Every time I’ve walked into the Cherry Tree either Ann or Jess are there. They’ll be behind the bar or in the kitchen or the garden or casually chatting to customers and more often than not, with a smile. They took over the pub on September 11, 1995 after Ann had been running a restaurant in Mablethorpe and Jess worked the dray for Carlsberg. “I always wanted my own business,” says Ann, “and the chance came to run the restaurant and through that the Cherry Tree.” Such is the work ethic of this hard working couple that they ran both the restaurant and the Cherry Tree and Jess still rode the dray! The Tree had long been a music pub engendered by the late great Pete Carter and still vibrant Joan Carter. Although there was a two year gap between them retiring from the pub and Jess and Ann taking over they say they were determined to ensure its reputation and following in the city.“Our first weekend we booked Who Knows, Jacob’s Ladder and Porky Pig.” Yes the very same one we see rocking pubs today. “You have to give people the bands they want to see, Smithy, Retrolux, Porky Pig – they play the songs they know.” Jess carries on – “That’s the ones that they come to see and spend their money over the bar too!” Wise man that Jess. Their music weekends are also a big part of their diary, the very last one being March 24 - 25. “We’ve spent a lot of time and money on the garden and it’s been worth it, the music days are great.” Ann is quite wistful about the last one – “Yeah it’s going to be great but emotional, I am looking forward to it but it will be strange being the last one.” It’s not just a music pub the Tree, it’s a community pub as Ann explains – “When EMAP, Marshalls and Guild House went we lost loads of custom at lunchtime, the easy option would’ve been to close at lunch but we didn’t, we got pensioners

It’s going to be a massive wrench for them to leave after 17 years, they’re probably the longest serving landlord and lady in the area. They appreciate that but are also looking ahead to spending quality time with their five grandchildren and giving themselves a chance to be grandparents. They also plan a major trip around Europe taking in Poland and Germany to catch up with old friends they’ve struggled to see over the years. They’re also going to get a lot of use out of their motor home travelling the sights of Britain and Ann’s going to tackle an Open University degree to prove to herself that she can! I shall be seeing them at the Maverick Festival in July which kind of takes me full circle with them as I first met Jess at Cambridge Folk Festival 16 years ago. He was lying on the grass in front of the beer tent challenging all comers to an arm wrestle – priceless!
Saturday March 31 is their last night and it’s quite fitting that Porky Pig will be their last band, it kind of completes the story on what has been an incredible journey. You’ll struggle to get in the place that night and you’ll find it more difficult to find a dry eye in the house. I for one wish them both a long, happy, fun filled retirement. I can’t think of a couple who deserve it more than Jess and Ann, they are very, very special people. Good luck to Ann and Jess from all at ESP, and many thanks for you years of support! And welcome to Janet and Tony who are the new faces behind the bar at the Cherry Tree – pop in and give them a warm welcome.
