Life’s Too Short not to laugh…
Although I’m disappointed to hear that we won’t be getting a full second series of Life’s Too Short, it’s good to know that a special episode will be making it’s way to our television screens this month. Not much has been given away as to the plot, but we do know that Hollywood actor Val Kilmer will be making an appearance, who Warwick starred alongside in Willow.
As a huge fan of Warwick Davis, Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant, I couldn’t wait to see 2012’s Life’s Too Short. This mockumentary Mikey Clarke saw local celeb Warwick playing a fictionalised version of himself, struggling as a showbiz dwarf. Also starring in this hilarious show was Gervais, Merchant and numerous A-List celebrities, all playing warped versions of themselves.
It’s also been revealed that during this one-off special we’ll be seeing much more of Keith Chegwin, Shaun Williamson and Les Dennis, as Warwick attempts to resurrect their careers. And Ricky and Steve will of course be returning too. Discussing the show, Warwick said – "I am thrilled to be able to step back into Warwick's shoes again for this special. Ricky and Stephen's scripts are always a gift to play and the inclusion of Val Kilmer is nothing short of genius." Mark Freeland, BBC Head of Comedy, added – “Warwick Davis has proved he’s an idiot abroad. It’s time again to see him prove that he’s an idiot at home, too. Fictionally speaking.” Keep checking out www.espmag.co.uk for updates on when exactly the show will air. Until then, continue reading for my top five moments of last year’s popular series… 1) The Washing Machine: Warwick is disappointed to hear that his new washing machine is not going to be installed by the delivery men, as the old one is still attached to the walls. He takes it upon himself to uninstall the old machine himself and put it out with the rubbish. It’s here that he’s told it can’t be kept with the rubbish, and so the actor tips it downhill and into a ditch. After all this, Warwick discovers that he actually tipped the brand new washing machine by mistake. 2) The Wedding Speech: Warwick is invited to a Star Wars themed wedding. The bride and groom are instantly disappointed with the fact he’s not turned up dressed as a Ewok, so arrange for him to wear a hollowed out teddy bear. Things get even worse for Warwick as his wedding speech doesn’t get the laughs he’d hoped for. It’s not surprising with gags such as – “Traditionally the best man’s speech is about making the groom feel uncomfortable for five minutes, which is exactly what Nigel does to Emma in bed.” 3) Johnny Depp: Like all cameo appearances in Life’s Too Short, we see Depp playing a fictionalised version of himself. In this particular episode, Depp calls upon Warwick to study his way of life, in preparation for a film role where Depp plays a dwarf. Gervais worked his magic in getting Depp to say and do controversial things. The blockbuster actor later emailed Gervais and joked – “Upon this debut I anticipate an immediate 95 per cent plummet in my earnings. Thank you for ruining my career."
Photos: BBC Pictures
4) The Party: Warwick puts on a showbiz flat-warming party, which disappointingly only attracts attention from people such as Keith Chegwin, Les Dennis and Shaun Williamson. The three spend the whole time depressingly discussing how their careers have gone downhill. The biggest name to attend is Cat Deeley, who becomes frustrated with Warwick starting rumours about them dating. 5) Liam Neeson: The actor known for his serious roles in films such as Taken and Schindler's List makes an appearance asking for tips on performing stand-up comedy. When giving an example of his ‘comedy talent’, he presents a skit which is darker than his film roles – which says a lot. The Life's Too Short special will air on BBC Two and BBC HD in March. He’ll also be back in the ’boro on March 21 as the special guest at the NSPPC Business Support Group Dinner at the Holiday Inn and is finding time to release a book in 2013, what a busy boy! But between the awards and accolades, Louis has found time to support charities such as Comic Relief and will be taking part in Graham Norton’s bid to set a new TV chat show record when he takes over BBC 3 for a whole evening on March 7. And incase anyone was worried about the famous Smith physique now he’s no longer keeping in shape ‘pommeling’ the horse or tangoing his socks off, fear not as Louis will be joining ex- England cricketers Michael Vaughan and Phil Tufnell on a charity bike ride in September.

STRICTLY COME CYCLING Local lad Louis Smith is showing his charitable side as he joins Tuffers on a bike challenge and Graham Norton for Comic Relief. hero Louis Smith but, never one to rest on his laurels, 2013 is shaping up to be even bigger for the former Arthur Mellows boy. Not only was there the Strictly Live Tour, where our Louis won an impressive 29 times out of a possible 31, but he’s now Louis Smith MBE after being honoured by the Queen in the New Year’s Honours List, meaning we all have to curtsey when we see him back home in Eye. OK, I may be slightly joking about that last bit but the award is a huge honour and well deserved after his achievements. Louis also found time
Loveable Olly is following in the footsteps of fellow X Factor stars JLS and will perform a big outdoor gig on Sunday June 2 and we’re counting down the days. It’s fantastic to see another big pop name come to the city and we’re looking forward to news of who’ll be the support acts so keep an eye on www.espmag.co.uk for all the latest news. Olly’s eagerly awaited second single Army of Two, from his latest album, will be out on March 10. “I did it with Future Cut, and I wanted to write a song for my fans,” says Olly of the new single. “That’s what Army Of Two is meant to mean – it’s about me and them. Although it can be about any relationship between your family, or your friends. It’s a fantastic, feelgood song and it just feels so anthemic – I love it!” Since becoming runner-up in 2009’s series of The X Factor, the singer-songwriter’s had huge success with two albums and a succession of catchy singles like Heart Skips a Beat and Dance with me Tonight. Olly’s third and most recent album, Right Place Right Time – released in November last year – became the fastest selling male solo album of 2012 in the UK and went straight to No.1 in the UK Album Chart, with the lead single Troublemaker (featuring Flo Rida) reaching the No.1 spot in the UK Singles Chart, meaning Olly held the top spot in both charts at the same time! Olly says he’s excited about his forthcoming summer tour – “I can pack it with songs that fans really love, that will get everyone up and dancing, that will engage. I’m an entertainer and a performer – and I admire the likes of Justin Timberlake, Michael Buble, Robbie Williams: all solo artists who can hold a crowd in the palm of their hands. It’s about having good music and a great band behind you – and I have. I think people know that it’ll be a fun show, we’ll have a good laugh and I’ll connect with them. Have a good time.” The outdoor concert in the city is in association with radio station Heart FM and is taking place on Sunday June 2. For more info, or to book tickets for the event, visit www.nationalboxoffice.co.uk or call 0871 224 1112 / 0844 888 9991. Wheelchair users should contact the dedicated booking line 0115 959 7908.

OLLY’S ON HIS WAY! We can’t wait for the summer and we can’t wait for that little ‘troublemaker’ himself, Olly Murs to perform on the Embankment.
Imaginatively named ‘The Michael Vaughan Bike Ride’ Louis will join his fellow Strictly star Michael, and former Strictly contestant and I’m a Celebrity winner Phil, on a 91 mile leg from Manchester to Edgbaston cricket ground on their 12 day 462 mile trip, raising funds for Laureus Sport for Food and the Cricket Foundation’s Chance to Shine initiative.

ANTONIO AND THE GREEDY ITALIAN
I first got together with my culinary hero when he was our special guest at the Italian Festival a couple of years ago. My addiction back then was critical but in a stable condition.
But my pasta-driven carnal desires have spiraled out of control since our most recent flirtatious exchange about the world’s most appetising food. I’m a man possessed and have already dined in Carluccio’s three times in the space of 10 days and I’m booked in for lunch twice more in March. My mission is to have sampled the entire menu by the end of summer and book in for a gastric band operation in time for Christmas. The food and atmosphere in Carluccio’s is addictive. I know I’ve
got a problem and turning to elastic waistband trousers for work attire isn’t the answer. The first thing I need to do is ask my editor to take down my interview with Antonio from the ESP website. It’ll stop me constantly re-reading Antonio’s responses to my Italian food-related questions. Anyone wanting to read my interview with the main man can do so here www.espmag.co.uk/twogreedy-italians-at-carluccios/ before it’s archived to protect my health.

Interviewing Antonio Carluccio at the official opening of his city centre restaurant fuelled my shameless addiction to Italian food porn.
JOIN ME ON THE ANNUAL EGG RUN! It’s that time of year again when the Peterborough Lambretta and Vespa Scooter Club strap Easter eggs to their two-wheeled machines and deliver them to The Manor children’s home and Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall. The club’s 16th annual Easter Egg Run takes place on Saturday March 23 and this time I’ll be (as long as it’s not raining!) joining the 300-strong convoy across our city right from the start instead of halfway through like I did last year.
NEW GS LAUNCH MYSTERY
I was recently made a member of the club (thanks for the banner guys, it covers a stone chip) and must admit it feels quite cool being part of a unique, community-minded organisation with a friendly bunch of members.
Saturday March 2 is the official launch of the new BMW R 1200 GS and I’ve been invited by Man About Town sponsors – Balderston – to a special pre-launch event on the Friday evening that’s shrouded in secrecy. The only instructions I’ve been given by the Baldeston boys (and Michelle) in Hampton is to block my diary out from 6.45pm until 9pm. I was hoping for a little more to go on, like: “Bring your passport and riding gear,” or “Do you like Kelly Brook?” but unfortunately they’re keeping tight lipped about this one. What I do know is that it’s an invite only event and I’ll be one of 150 people on the list. It’s times like this when all I can do is remember my mum’s advice: “Always make sure you’re wearing clean pants and remember to wash behind your ears.” I’ve followed these words of wisdom for years and they cater for most eventualities. I guess there’s nothing else I can say at this point except read my column next month when all will be revealed!

BUONA PASQUA FROM CARLUCCIO’S!
THE START OF A POINTLESS TV CAREER? Those of you who've been reading this column since I first began writing it 14 years ago will remember my promising TV career. I presented my own football discussion programme (Peptalk) and appeared on countless football shows during a three year spell that helped me land a job in the Posh press office.
Easter is a festival that brings people together no matter what your age; everyone enjoys receiving a chocolate egg. Whether it’s partaking in an egg hunt or passing around the Columba cake, Easter is a welcome chance to enjoy time with the family. This year, Carluccio’s selection of gifts celebrates the joys of spring with a palette of fresh greens and warm golds that leave you feeling that winter is long gone. THE EGGS Carluccio’s beautifully hand decorated ‘big egg’ is sure to impress, available in milk, dark and white chocolate (400g, £15.95). Or why not try the fun and quirky ‘egg box’ – a clear egg carton containing six dark chocolate ‘hen’s eggs’ in candy coloured sugar shells (230g, £9.95).
THE EASTER CHARACTERS Choose from ‘gallina’ – a delightful and artisanal chocolate hen sitting on a bed of mini chocolate eggs, available in milk, dark and white chocolate (150g, £6.50) or Carluccio’s take on the ‘Easter basket’ (£9.95) filled with a colourful mixture of mini eggs, chocolate farmyard animals and fruit sweets. THE TRADITIONAL CAKE Carluccio’s presents its much loved Colomba Tradizionale – the classic Italian Easter cake, made with candied fruit and sultanas and topped with hazelnut icing and almonds (750g, £13.95).
I worked hard to create a professional TV reputation for myself until one day I blew it with a stint on The Weakest Link where I was voted off for being sexist. In short, I made a t*t of myself and cringe every time someone mentions it to me. So when our Mikey told me he was appearing on Pointless I really hoped that my ESP TV apprentice would do me proud. I'm pleased to say that despite wearing a dodgy check shirt and having a bit of a moment when it came to Australians, Mikey did the business for our city and I've got a funny feeling we'll be seeing more of him on a TV screen near you soon. He told me: "It was a great experience being at the BBC TV studios in London for a few days filming. The most nerve wracking thing was waiting for the question categories to come up and hoping you don't make a total fool of yourself when answering. Anyone who saw my performance will hopefully forgive me for my lack of knowledge on Australian people (sorry to all the Aussies) and the wife’s attempt in answering a question about American baseball teams. Although we didn’t walk away with any cash, hopefully we did Peterborough a little bit proud.”
THERE’S A RUNNER IN EVERYONE (EVEN OUR MIKEY!) Talking of Mikey following in my footsteps, after taking part in the Perkins Great Eastern Run three times myself I’ve handed over my trainers to my young protégé (sorry about the smell mate!) The PGER is now open for entries so whether you’re a dedicated runner or just a good hearted fun runner for charity now’s the time to take up the challenge. ESP reporter Mikey Clarke is stretching his hamstrings as you read this as he’s signing up for this year s event on Sunday October 13 to raise money for Arthritis Research UK.

MARCH LOVE FOR MOTHERS It’s Easter at the end of this month and naturally donations of Cadbury’s Crème Eggs will be gratefully received – thank you. But more importantly in March (10), it’s Mother’s Day. No doubt Shell garage flowers will once again come to the rescue (Valentine’s being the first occasion this year) for most of us blokes who are rubbish at buying gifts. But it’s the thought that counts and I always like to remind myself of my favourite Irish proverb, which sums up the love we have for our mums: “A man loves his sweetheart the most; his wife the best, but his mother the longest.”

WILDWOOD RESTAURANT TO OPEN IN CITY We’re loving all the good food news in the city at the moment and hot on the heels of Carluccio’s opening it looks like Cathedral Square is set to see another new name as Wildwood is set to open a new outlet here.
Waitrose Queensgate – Woodland friends Easter eggs, from £5
Following hot on the heels of the recent opening of Carluccio's on Cumbergate, this announcement will mean that all the units around Cathedral Square will be fully occupied.
NEXT Queensgate – Chicken egg cups (set of 2) £6
Wildwood’s ethos is to ‘serve great food, delivered by friendly staff in a relaxed, homely environment’. Specialities on the menu include grills, salads, and freshly prepared pastas – it’s all fresh high quality food and locally sourced – sounds good to us! With its modern décor and high quality food the restaurant has impressed customers at existing locations including Canary Wharf, Covent Garden, Market Harborough and Gerrard’s Cross. The Peterborough restaurant will create 30 jobs (even more good news!) and will operate throughout the day and evenings which should really add to the vibrant dining quarter we’ve seen develop around Cathedral Square. It’s great to see that dining out has become much more a part of the city’s night time economy and creates a great balance of people socialising in the city after dark. If you’re not familiar with the name, Wildwood is part of the highly respected restaurant group Tasty plc, which is operated by Samuel and Adam Kaye, co-founders of Italian restaurant chain ASK. They also own the well-known Dim T Asian restaurant brand. Wildwood in Cathedral Square will be a restaurant for all ages, especially families, and will complement the growing food offer in the heart of the city.

Steve Bowyer, Head of Economic development at Opportunity Peterborough, told ESP – “We’re delighted with Wildwood’s decision to come to Peterborough. This represents another important piece of the jigsaw to create a strong dining offer which is already pulling more and more people into the city centre. I am sure this will be a hugely popular addition to the daytime and evening economy and look forward to it being part of our vibrant city centre.” Jonny Plant Chief Executive Officer of Wildwood, added – “We are really pleased to be coming to Peterborough. Cathedral Square is a great location for us and we look forward to providing a high quality, affordable and friendly experience to the people of Peterborough.” Carluccios Ovetti Di Cioccolato £10.95 (600g) £5.95 (200g)

T
his spring/summer sees a real clash of the titans in era trends... 50’s shapes and 60’s monochrome all mixed in with 90’s neons make this forthcoming season one interesting play time! Black and white monochrome is present throughout the high street and can be difficult to wear at times but my favourite look is vertical stripes as they elongate, and we all love a long leg! Neons are starting to break through now which is great as we certainly can’t rely on the British weather for our daily injection of brightness. I’ve mixed the current monochrome trend with the upcoming neons to show how easily the two can be worn together. Now, I love a cheeky little trip to huge shopping centres for the ease of everything under one roof, and in the warmth with food nearby, so I was hugely impressed with River Island and Outfit at Serpentine Green in Hampton where the clothes have all come from, as I've been able to create both day and evening looks. Jewellery this season hasn't taken too much of an era backstep and only going as far as 90s inspired, so think chunky chains, bright coloured cocktail gems and plenty of layering and stacking. This season’s trend is also reflected in the hair and makeup and being a huge fan of the eyeliner flick I’m in my absolute element! Plenty of back combing will help with each look created. Get the look
To help achieve our look Mel from Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique worked her magic on some striking back combed styles and make-up artist Andrea Connor completed the look with a retro inspired 50s/60s feel.
Lauren’s make-up was kept the same for both looks, we used earthy tones across the whole lid with a darker shade in the crease, not forgetting to highlight the brow bone and a white kohl pencil on the lower inner lid keeping it very 60s. Both a dark kohl pencil and liquid liner were used. Lips were kept nude. The top part of Lauren’s hair was set in heated rollers, spritzed first with GHD curl hold spray and left to cool down. The lower part was curled with GHDs. Once the curlers were removed the roots were backcombed and smoothed. The top section was slightly twisted and pinned at the back pushing up to create an even higher beehive, all finished off with Wella care and style dynamic fix and also GHD final shine. To create a softer day look the loose curl sections were grabbed and pinned into place.
Jess had a softer day look with her makeup keeping it very simple with hardly any eye shadow and only a slightly heavier shade in the crease. However, we kept the attention to the detailed 60s eyeliner flick and also used a mocha colour kohl pencil under the eye to soften up the heavy top lid eyeliner. To create the evening make-up we strengthened up the eyeliner on both the inner and outer parts of the eye and used a warm earthy colour palette for the eye shadow creating a smoky twist on the trend. Lips were kept nude. Jess' hair was spritzed with GHD curl hold spray and set in heated rollers all over to create root volume throughout. Once cooled the rollers were removed and the roots were backcombed and extra volume added by ruffling the hair whilst the head was tilted forward.
To transform her look into evening the hair was scraped into a ponytail lightly backcombed and then smoothed out. The hair was then swept from left to right and pinned into place. Both looks were finished off with Wella care and style dynamic fix. For more details and to see behind the scenes of our shoot visit www.espmag.co.uk/fashion
TUDANSE DREAMS A DREAM WITH LES MISERABLES WORKSHOP Les Miserables has gained another generation of fans following the recent movie release but the original stage show remains as popular as ever so it was fantastic to see a couple of the cast come to Peterborough.
Photos: Emma Bothamley
Nicky Swift (Madame) and James Winter (Claquesous) from the current stage production spent an afternoon teaching city drama fans some of the scenes and songs at the TuDanse studio in Fengate.

Around 20 people were at the workshop and were guided through songs like At The End Of The Day directed by Nicky and James. A fan of Les Miserables herself, Emma Bothamley went along to report for ESP. “They were encouraging the attendees to really perform during the songs and add their own individual interpration,” says Emma. “Nicky and James also did a session on acting within some of the key scenes, again asking the attendees to improvise and act out their feelings. It was apparent that they knew Les Mis really well and there were some excellent dramatic performances!” At the end of the session, there was a Q&A session with Nicky and James who were asked about life on the West End Stage. The workshop was a huge success so let’s hope there’ll be similar events in future. The TuDanse dance school and studio runs various classes and events so keep an eye on www.tudanse.co.uk.

paparazzi Caught in the act? CARLUCCIO AND CLUBBING! On the dining circuit the big buzz was all about the launch of the long awaited Carluccio’s restaurant in Peterborough and ESP was there to cover the party. Antonio Carluccio himself greeted guests and ESP’s Pep Cipriano grabbed a chat with him which you can read in full on www.espmag.co.uk/twogreedy-italians-at-carluccios/ Our photographer Chris Brudenell captured the action. BBC Three has a star-studded line-up of guests and performers for Comic Relief’s Big Chat with Graham Norton on Thursday March 7 and it’s great to see plenty of Peterborough talent taking part. Graham will be taking over BBC Three for the whole night from 7pm to host the biggest chat show ever which will last into the early hours of Friday morning as he attempts to set the Guinness World Record for ‘Most Questions Asked on a TV Chat Show’ all in aid of Comic Relief. Graham says – “David Walliams swam the Thames, John Bishop endured a week of hell and Eddie Izzard ran marathon after marathon after marathon. I am hoping to join this elite group of celebrity fundraisers by doing what I do best – sitting on my backside and talking.” Of course Yaxley based actor Warwick Davis has already played a part in the fundraising by winning the Comic Relief Great British Bake Off where he had the satisfaction of whupping Dragon Duncan Bannatyne – “He took it very seriously, and having a Dragon baking just behind me was quite intimidating,” says Warwick. He proved quite the cook on the show but says it wasn’t hard to outdo some of the food he’s experienced whilst filming. “My bakes were 100 times better than what is often served on set. On 'Harry Potter', we filmed the feasts in the Great Hall over a few days. On the first day, the food was just edible, but by the third day, the smell was overwhelming and there was nothing magical about it at all!” Other special guests who’ll be joining Graham in the studio for the Big Chat include: Ronnie Corbett, Sarah Millican, Martin Freeman, Jimmy Carr, Lee Mack, Keith Lemon, Elle Macpherson, James Nesbitt, Paddy McGuinness, Heston Blumenthal, Got To Dance Judges Ashley Banjo and Kimberley Wyatt, Alex Jones & Steve Jones, Russell Tovey and Kirstie Allsopp. Plus musical performances will include Example, Paloma Faith, Hurts and Laura Mvula.

Peterborough stars Aston from JLS, gymnast Louis Smith and actor Warwick Davis are joining the Big Chat for Comic Relief. In order to cope with the galaxy of stars in the studio, Graham will be assisted throughout the evening by a number of co-hosts; from chat show veterans such as Sir Terry Wogan and Frank Skinner to BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show presenter Nick Grimshaw, the co-hosts will ensure Graham remains on track to hopefully smash the world record and raise as much money as possible for Comic Relief. In addition to all this, Greg James will be on-hand all night hosting the Big Chat Backstage Party – making sure that Louis, Aston, Wawrick and the other guests are well looked after. You’ll be able to help Graham raise money for Comic Relief, by choosing to give either £5 or £10 and then texting FIVE or TEN to 70510. You can also help Graham break the world record by submitting questions for him to ask his guests via Twitter (@bbcthree #bigchat) or by visiting the BBC Three Facebook page (facebook.com/bbcthree). So if you want to know where our Louis stores his Strictly glitterball, or if you want Warwick’s favourite recipe or to know if Aston will have any more Peterborough landmarks tattooed on his body – get texting! Everyone’s doing their bit for Comic Relief and Red Nose Day on Friday March 15 – our gorgeous cover star Helen Skelton has been carrying out various challenges and you can play
your part by supporting the many fundraising activities, or how about heading to TK Maxx on Bridge Street in Peterborough and grabbing yourself one of the trendy Comic Relief T-shirts? Stella McCartney has created five individual designs, with iconic prints featuring The Beatles, Tommy Cooper, Marilyn Monroe, Kate Moss and a child’s giraffe print t-shirt. The exclusive t-shirts are made from 100% Fairtrade certified organic cotton. The unique limited edition T-shirts start at £5.99 (for a children’s tee) with at least £2.50 going to Comic Relief and £9.99 (for adults) with at least £5 going to Comic Relief. Modelling the Tshirts for Comic Relief, model David Gandy said – "I'm really happy to be involved in the tshirt campaign. Comic Relief does an amazing job in raising money for such an important cause and by wearing one of Stella McCartney's designed Tshirts you can be a part of that and own a piece of stylish, Comic Relief history at the same time.” www.rednoseday.com

Movie Previews
OZ: THE GREAT & POWERFUL Director Sam Raimi teams up with his Spider-Man trilogy star James Franco in Disney’s latest big-budget spectacle – by reinvigorating a dormant franchise.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
The legendary Evil Dead director has helped splash The House of Mouse’s cash in an attempt to get a sizeable slice of the Alice in Wonderland pie (which was a massive success three years ago) with this prequel set before 1939’s Judy Garland-starring The Wizard of Oz.
gavin.miller@espmag.co.uk
Released: March 8. Cast: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz. Director: Sam Raimi Franco, now a much bigger star after his turns in The Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours – which garnered him an Academy Award nomination – stars as Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician who eventually ends up as the infamous wizard from L Frank Baum’s timeless novels. Just like Garland’s character Dorothy, Diggs is hurled away from his dusty Kansas homestead into the magical Land of Oz – where he’s reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the inhabitants.
After meeting three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), the exuberant Diggs has to learn some harsh life lessons, and work out who is ‘good and evil’ – by unlocking his own magical skills – before it’s too late. One thing’s for sure, if Raimi and co get this right, they could just pave the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ with gold . . .

Released: March 8
One thing’s for sure, romantic dramas are one of the few genres that are a license to print money in Hollywood, and this movie from Dear John director Lasse Hallstrom has already done that Stateside. Julianne Hough stars as a young woman looking for love in a small North Carolina town – but finds Josh Duhamel’s dark secrets affecting her new life.
Mia Wachowski (Alice in Wonderland) stars as a girl traumatised after losing her father in a car accident in this psychological thriller, which is getting decent early reviews. When her uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) moves in with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Nicole Kidman), they realise he has ulterior motives despite their infatuation with him.
Jason Statham continues his relentless streak as one of Hollywood’s leading action stars in this crime-thriller where he’s doublecrossed by his crew and left for dead. He then forms an unlikely alliance with a woman on the inside (Jennifer Lopez), as he looks to hijack his former team’s next heist. Directed by Helen Mirren’s hubby Taylor Hackford (The Devil’s Advocate).
Steven Soderbergh’s (Contagion) latest provocative thriller sees a New York couple’s world unravel (Channing Tatum and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara) when a new antianxiety drug prescribed by Mara’s psychiatrist (Jude Law) has unexpected, you guessed it – side effects. Co-starring Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Released: March 15 Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson star in this actioner as a group of teenagers look to save their hometown from an invasion by North Korean soldiers, in this delayed action-thriller remake that was shot a couple of years ago. Despite generally poor reviews, it was a surprise success when released in the US last year.

Released: March 15 Former criminal Mark Strong is forced to return to London from his Icelandic hideaway when his son is badly hurt in a heist gone wrong. His reappearance gives James McAvoy’s detective one last chance to capture the man who’s eluded him – but together they start to uncover a deeper conspiracy that puts both their lives in danger.
Released: March 22 Nic Cage proves he’s not just critic cannon-fodder with his burgeoning CV of poor action films, by expanding his portfolio with the latest bigbudget computer-generated animation from Dreamworks. He heads an all-star cast – which includes Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone – as a cave-dwelling prehistoric family venture into the new uncharted world.
Released: March 22 Brit star Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies) continues his rise to prominence in the third major family adventure out this month. This mixture of live action and visual effects sees him star as young farmhand Jack, fighting for his kingdom and the love of a princess in this ancient war between humans and a race of giants, co-starring Ewan McGregor.
THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE Magician Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) splits from his long-time stage partner (Steve Buscemi) after a street competitor (Jim Carrey) steals their thunder, in this zany comedy. But by spending time with his boyhood hero, Burt tries to remember what made him fall in love with magic in the first place, to reach the pinnacle of his craft once again.
Released: March 22 It was only a matter of time before Bridesmaids’ stand-out Best Supporting Actress-nominated star Melissa McCarthy got her first lead role – in this US box-office smash comedy from the director of Horrible Bosses. She lives it up as a deceptively harmless-looking woman – who steals the identity of mild-mannered businessman Jason Bateman.

DEAD SPACE 3 (360/PS3/PC) Out now Being a massive fan of the first two games, the third instalment was entered with some trepidation after early critic’s reviews weren’t quite as favourable – but don’t listen. This shooter may have lost a bit of its original survival-horror eeriness and originality, but this is still sensational stuff with great new customisable weapons – and excellent co-op mode as unfortunate engineer Isaac Clarke is joined by merciless soldier John Carver.
#####
Crash-landing on the frozen planet of Tau Volantis to find the source of the alien Necromorph outbreak is still jaw-droppingly awesome – where no-one will hear you scream.
DMC: DEVIL MAY CRY (PS3/360/PC) Out now
Revamping a popular series is always a risk – but Capcom’s new take on the DmC universe is a resounding success. As adventure series stalwart Dante – now a younger half angel, half demon – you’ll trip between reality and the stunning-looking Limbo City in a bid to free the human race from the tyranny of demon king Mundos.
#####
With a marvellous musical score and a top-notch combo system, hacking and slashing through a compelling 12-hour plus campaign is a real blast – leaving hardcore fans and newcomers alike to gleefully raise hell.
CRYSIS 3 (360/PS3/PC) Out now As this generation’s consoles draw to a close there’s still one game engine pushing the consoles to the absolute limit. With truly luscious graphics – coupled with the still-exhilarating shooting and stealth gameplay – this third instalment as Nanosuit soldier, the Prophet, proves Crytek can still deliver through the seven wonders of New York’s Liberty Dome, with their stunning CryEngine 3 technology.
#####
BB’s Brow Bar, Unit 26 Westgate Arcade, Peterborough PE1 1NL
It’s ultimately still overly-familiar and doesn’t advance greatly over the second instalment – but taking enemies out with the new Predator Bow has never been more satisfying.
ALIENS: COLONIAL MARINES (PS3/360/PC) Out now
#####
After being delayed once again you would’ve thought Gearbox – the makers of the excellent Borderlands – would’ve had so much time to get it right, but with last-gen graphics and poor un-Alien-like AI, this only has the license going for it. As marines return to the USS Sulaco orbiting the legendary planet LV-426 – set directly after Aliens – only nostalgic nods make this worth a playthrough.
METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE (360/PS3) Out now This one will split fans of the Metal Gear franchise – the true stealth that made the series a classic is gone, but an elegant slasher in the vein of Bayonetta is born.
#####
It’s a heavily Japanese-influenced cinematic experience that promotes the fourth instalment’s supporting character Raiden, cutting through cyborg’s as part of new gameplay feature entitled zan-datsu – as you seek revenge for an African president’s assassination. Cut-scenes and sometimes anarchic combat prevents it from greatness – but this rises from Solid’s ashes with a vengefully satisfying new direction.
HITMAN HD TRILOGY (PS3/360) Out now If 2012's excellent Absolution represented the evolution of the Hitman series, this is a return to Agent 47's murky roots. The HD Trilogy delivers re-mastered versions of last-gen classics Silent Assassin, Contracts and the ever-enjoyable Blood Money – which equates to forty vintage levels of innovative assassinating.
#####
Clunky controls and still below-par graphics may be a turn-off for newcomers to the Square Enix franchise, but for 47's many fans this is a great next-Gen package at a killer price.
Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviews of Call of Duty: Black Ops II & Assassin’s Creed 3.
Thanks to Ian Hilling for reviewing Dead Space 3; and Andy Clucas for reviewing DmC: Devil May Cry and Hitman HD Trilogy.
It’s been more than a decade in the making – but sadly you’ll probably be using harsh language more than pulse rifles with this huge disappointment.

HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine
karen.devine@espmag.co.uk
Is your diet sapping your energy levels? ESP’s nutritionist Karen Devine shows you how to eat for energy…
F
atigue is a very common complaint, some of us can get around this with a few early nights, better hydration and making some healthier food choices.
When it comes to food choices and diets the internet, newspapers and magazines are all oozing information on a healthy eating plan ranging from vegetarian, to vegan, or from raw foods to a diet high in protein, fat and low carbs and more. You name it I’m sure you’ve seen the many ‘ideals’ when it comes to eating the right way or the right diet which can be conflicting and confusing. For me, it does not come down to one type of diet that we have to squeeze into. In fact for many that healthy diet you’ve been reading or asked to follow may just not be suited to you at all, leaving you feeling bloated (and other digestive issues) irritable, low mood, suffering brain fog, unwanted weight gain and most of all feeling less than vital with low energy.
will determine how well you’ll digest, absorb and eliminate even the healthiest of foods. Just looking at a plate of food which ticks the boxes of nutritional value does not mean that you’ll receive those benefits if for instance you struggle with heartburn, indigestion, bloating, IBS type symptoms and much more. Our balance of healthy bacteria, optimal enzyme activity and a good balance of Hydrochloric acid all play a role in digestion, so energy/food in, may not equal that energy out, so certain issues may need addressing first! One way to begin to support sustained energy is a good blood sugar balancing diet. When we make choices such as: Healthy proteins – lean white meat, fish, eggs, seeds, nuts etc Healthy fats – avocado, olive oil, oily fish, nuts, seeds, coconut oil etc steamed, in soups or roasted… avoid boiling!
“One way to begin to support sustained energy is a good blood sugar balancing diet” Determining what is the best choice for you as an individual can take time and some experimenting and I’d advise you to take professional advice as removing foods is great if the offending foods have gone, but replacing them with good alternatives is equally, if not more important. It’s also worth noting here that your digestive system
Fruits – only a couple of pieces per day if possible, dark coloured berries, apples, pears are good choices. Avoid fruit juices.
Grains – low antigens in particular including quinoa, rice, millet, rice cakes, oats and oat cakes (take advice on grains if you have extremely low energy or have digestive issues etc) Vegetables – get as much variety of colour from the freshest vegetables you can, take some raw (unless you have gut issues),
Avoid caffeine, refined carbohydrates and sugars in your day as this will stimulate blood sugar and lead to highs and lows making you feel not only tired but craving the same foods again and again. Regular eating is important, for some snacking in between helps, whereas others may find eating three good size meals – with all the healthy
components above with every main meal (and snacks if needed) – may help keep your energy stable, and importantly not tempt you with quick sugar or caffeine fixes. Other non foods that play havoc with our stress glands and blood sugar are smoking, stress, excessive exercising, lack of sleep and alcohol to name a few, so all these should be addressed if you’re struggling to find and keep your energy levels high. In health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

MOVIE MAKERS @ SACREWELL ESP Magazine is always happy to see local people doing well in their careers. Martin Tempest is one of those people. The award winning Stamford based film producer and director has gone a long way since his first major film Stingers Rule, which starred another local celeb, Luke Pasqualino (Freddie from Skins). Martin Tempest is the Director and founder of Image Productions, which has been running Movie Makers film courses for young people for over 15 years. A recent opportunity for these youngsters was to film Top Secret – a kind of James Bond spy film and they shot some scenes at Sacrewell Farm. Image Productions creates incredibly high quality movies, so much so that, some of these films have already been distributed in the US. Only last year Movie Makers had a premiere of a film called One Chance at the Showcase Cinema in Peterborough which was attended
by local Harry Potter actor Warwick Davis, who was apparently extremely impressed.
asset to the community that we are pleased it has been utilised as such.”
Martin Tempest who was born in Peterborough told ESP – “It’s fantastic that local businesses such as Sacrewell Farm come forward and support these great projects. If it was not for places like this these films would never get off the ground.”
Martin Tempest is a professional actor who played the Artful Dodger with George Scot in the film of Oliver Twist in the 1980s, and is keen to give others the chance to act. Werrington’s own Luke Pasqualino who recently starred in the film Love Bite had once done Movie Makers himself, as did Simon Twine who worked behind the camera and is now one of the head special effects artists at Industrial Light & Magic in Colorado. Simon’s made films such as Iron Man 2, Transformers
Sacrewell’s Marketing and Communications Officer, Megan Horner, told ESP – “We were delighted that Martin chose the Mill House to film in. It was built in 1755 and is such an

JESS GETS A HEALTH MOT It’s not just your car that needs its MOT – your body could benefit from a thorough check over too. We sent Jessica Lockhart to see what a full health screening is like at the Fitzwilliam Hospital… Don’t like hospitals? Rarely visit your GP? Are you sure you’re in the best shape or fear that you’re not and aren’t sure where to get help? Well it could be time to put yourself in for a service! Early detection of any medical condition is always better and let’s face it, just peace of mind and reassurance you’re doing what you should is definitely worth having. Jess went along to the Fitzwilliam Hospital for a one hour Well Woman health check but there are several different options to choose from should you have specific health concerns. This session included height, weight and body mass index, body fat percentage as well as blood count tests, blood pressure and cholesterol. The specialist nurse assesses your full medical and
gynaecological history, there’s a pelvic ultrasound scan and a full urine analysis while you’re there. “There’s so much more you can find out and ask compared to going to your GP,” said Jess after her health check. “You really do feel like you’ve had a full MOT. I found it very reassuring but also learned a few tips and things I didn’t know even though I’d consider myself fairly well informed.” As a young fitness instructor former Face of ESP Jess Lockhart is already pretty savvy about looking after herself. Despite being in good shape there was still plenty of advice that proved useful and Jess told us it’s given her great reassurance that she is doing the best for herself in terms of diet and fitness. “The team were really friendly and informative and thoroughly assessed my lifestyle and diet. They took their time and were happy to answer my questions.” During the hour long consultation guidance on diet and lifestyle are all covered thoroughly along with other health advice such as breast awareness, so you know how to check yourself in future, and you take away a full written report. Like most of us Jess wouldn’t usually head to a hospital unless she needed to but didn’t find her visit daunting – “If you’re not keen on hospitals it was nice that The Fitzwilliam provides a relaxing environment that didn’t particularly feel like a hospital at all. A variety of tests were carried out with some of the results being given there and then.” “I’d definitely recommend this – you’d never get such a comprehensive health scan at your doctor unless there were already problems so this check up really gives you peace of mind.”
There are several health screening options including a Platinum Profile and Cervical Smear Screen and to find out more please phone 01733 842312 to speak to one of their hospital service advisors.

For one weekend only, the largest assault course on Earth is being assembled within the grounds of Burghley House followed by an after party with headliners Ocean Colour Scene performing live! The Rat Race Dirty Weekend is dubbed the 'World's Biggest Assault Course' and features challenging off-road running, followed by an epic after-party of festivalproportions. The run itself consists of two options: The Full Mucker (20 miles) and the Half Mucker (13 miles) option for those who want to tackle most of the obstacles, but who find the full distance a little much. PETERBOROUGH RUGBY CLUBHOUSE UPGRADE
TIME TO HIT THE DIRT AS SPEEDWAY SEASON LAUNCHES
Bob Taylor and Neil Darwin cutting the ribbon with club members Nigel Cook (second left) and David Bath (right)
Bob Taylor, former England Captain and Past President of the Rugby Football Union dropped by the Boro recently to help officially open the refurbished clubhouse at Peterborough Rugby Club in Fengate.
Ready for some Speedway action? The new season is here and the bikes are getting ready to roar at the Showground.
He was joined by Neil Darwin, Chief Executive of Opportunity Peterborough for the opening ahead of the club’s SSE Midlands One league fixture against Peterborough Lions. It’s all thanks to Olympic Legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund together with additional money from other grants and donations.
If you’ve never been before maybe this is the year to give this exciting sport a try. The fans are friendly and happy to explain the rules but you’ll soon get caught up in the spectacle.
Peterborough Rugby Club received £45,000 of National Lottery funding to upgrade the facilities at their clubhouse in Fengate, which has helped thousands of local young people get into the sport. The money was used to provide a pitched roof over the existing clubhouse together with an extension to create a new entrance, toilet facilities and other upgrading works.
Peterborough Speedway 2013 Elite League fixtures see the Readypower Panthers hold the majority of home matches on Friday evenings, which it’s hoped will enable families to attend on a regular basis. Panthers' Elite League campaign kicks off in mouth-watering fashion with a home and away local derby against rivals King's Lynn on Good Friday (March 29), with the Showground fixture taking place in the afternoon at 2pm.
Another eagerly-awaited double header features the nowtraditional clashes with Coventry, which this time take place on Spring Bank Holiday (May 27). Reigning Elite League Champions Swindon will make two visits to the Showground, including an early-season clash on April 12 whilst King’s Lynn, Coventry, Belle Vue and Eastbourne are the other clubs to face the Panthers twice at home and twice away. Linus Sundström
The visit of Poole, who’ve topped the Elite League table ahead of the play-offs for the past three years and include World Champion Chris Holder, is scheduled for Friday May 9, and Peterborough are delighted to once again have been chosen as the staging venue for the Premier League Fours on Sunday July 14. The good news for fans is that popular Danish International Kenneth Bjerre will be back to lead the team again for the forthcoming season after his nasty leg injury at the end of last season. Kenneth can’t wait to hit the track – “This will be my seventh season with the Panthers and I am really looking forward to having a good year, and to put 2012 well and truly behind me.”
Kenneth Bjerre

Prior to that, the club launch the season with a Challenge match – the home leg will be staged at the East of England Showground on Thursday March 21 (7.30pm), followed by the away fixture twenty-four hours later at Purfleet on Friday March 22 at 8pm).
The guys will no doubt be raising the roof at the Club’s forthcoming annual Beer Festival on May 3, 4 and 5!
BASKETBALL STAR DREW DROPS IN Drew Sullivan, captain of the Great Britain Basketball team, visited Nene Park Academy recently to give students a masterclass on the sport, which has seen its popularity soar since this year’s Olympic Games. Nene Park Academy was selected by Sky Sports as part of its ‘Living for Sport’ initiative – which aims to encourage more girls into team sport. Drew discussed this initiative, basketball, and the Olympics with hundreds of engrossed students.
Panthers boss Jan Staechmann added –“All of our riders are raring to go, and already there is a good buzz from the riders about the season ahead.
After giving the talk ESP’s Mikey Clarke grabbed a few words with the 6ft 8in sporting legend to ask how kids could get involved.
“At the risk of covering old ground, it is very clear that we must not drop any points at home – which we found to our great expense in 2012. So to start off with a friendly against 2012 play-off contenders Lakeside, will be a good test.”
Drew explained – “To play professionally you have to practice, practice, practice! People shouldn’t be

put off by the fact that they don’t feel they’re fit enough or tall enough. They need to find a gym or club where they can play, and just keep playing. Maybe then an opportunity will arise.” On the subject of the Olympics, Drew continued – “I think GB did brilliant. We proved we have some amazing talent and we put on a show. Rio is going to have to do something truly incredible to outdo us in 2016.” The basketball star also plays for the oldest operating basketball team in the country, Leicester Riders. BYE BYE BOYDY Fans favourite George Boyd laced up his boots for Peterborough United for the final time last month as he headed for a fresh future with Hull City. After a great six years with Posh he’s left fans with some fantastic memories. Club historian Pete Lane told ESP he’s made some unforgettable appearances – “His goal from the halfway line against Huddersfield was one of the best I’ve ever seen at London Road.” And Pete says it wasn’t just Boydy’s shirt that warranted a 10 – “In the future I’d certainly look towards inducting him into the Posh Hall of Fame. Although he wasn’t always totally consistent he always worked hard and at times was brilliant. He was also a great ambassador for the club off the field and he’s certainly shown his loyalty staying with the club so long.”

Despite efforts by manager Darren Ferguson and chairman Darragh MacAnthony to get George to stay he’d made no secret of the fact he wanted to move up. In his statement George said – “I explained that the opportunity to join a club like Hull City at this stage of my
career was too good to turn down. I didn’t want to wait until the end of the season. I wanted to fulfil my dream of playing in the Premier League.” Boyd scored his final goal for Posh in the 5-1 victory at the New Den against Millwall, the last of 297 appearances for the club and his 75th goal. “I will be eternally grateful to the chairman for allowing me this opportunity and I wish him, Darren, all of the players and all of the supporters the very best in their efforts to avoid relegation this season,” added George. “In my opinion, the manager has assembled the best squad in my time at the club. “My message to the supporters is simple. Thank you very much for all your support over the time I have been with Peterborough. You have been magnificent and I ask you to please get behind the players, the manager and the club for the rest of the season.” For the latest Posh news check www.theposh.com

what an exhibition!
N
ot many clubs can claim to have been in existence for 125 years but there’s something about the Peterborough Photographic Society that’s kept generation after generation of photography enthusiasts involved. “It’s possibly because of the ever changing world that photography has been over the past 125 years or so,” explains the Society’s President Richard Houghton. “It's a fascination, hobby and passion for many people and always attracts new interest especially in recent times with the explosion of technology.” An exhibition in the café at Peterborough Museum is a celebration of all this enthusiasm for capturing the perfect image with an engaging display of photos from its members adorning the walls. Our own ESP photographer Emma Bothamley is one of those with a picture on display, an atmospheric photo of a Spitfire in the grounds of the Cathedral. "I'm really proud to be a part of a Society that has such a long history and thrilled that one of my photos was chosen to form part

of this special exhibition,” says Emma. “A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to make this exhibition happen, and as the exhibition runs now until the 10th March hopefully as many people as possible will get the chance to see our members' work from over the years. And hopefully we might even inspire some future photographers!" Peterborough Photographic Society (PPS) has always maintained a good relationship with the local community and worked hard to continue the long-held traditions of the club; to help members improve their photography and at the same time enhance their enjoyment of this fascinating and creative hobby. So if this exhibition fires up your enthusiasm for photography perhaps you’d like to join Peterborough Photographic Society yourself.
“Members benefit from a variety of different activities,” explains Richard. “Last week we held a 'Portrait' evening where I organised a model to attend and advised and guided members when taking photos in different lighting conditions (this sort of activity outside of the club could be quite expensive but it's included in the members attendance). In addition, we have a variety of carefully selected speakers attend our club giving talks, showing images and work they've completed and also advising other members who may be interested. Recently we've had talks from an astronomical photographer, a wildlife photographer and also a couple who've toured Brazil! Fascinating and interesting beyond the normal chit-chat associated with other clubs.” The exhibition is free to view and runs until Sunday March 10 so pop down to the
Museum on Priestgate and take a look while you enjoy a cuppa! “Our 125th exhibition I believe is one of the best we've ever displayed,” says Richard. “It shows images from nearly 90 years ago, memorabilia from the very beginnings of the club and also images from more recent times; showing how photography has changed over the years but especially over the past 30 years. It's a must see exhibition for anyone interested in photography!” You can see more of the Society’s work next month at their Annual Photography Exhibition which is being held from April 8 – 20 at St John's church in the city centre. This will include a variety of images from members and is open to all to view for free. Find out more on www.peterboroughps.org.uk

CITY PICS IN THE TATE MODERN! We couldn’t talk photography without mentioning Peterborough paramedic and street photographer Chris Porsz. He’s won over many city people with his candid shots and now we’re pleased to tell you his fabulous book New England is also to be stocked at the Tate Modern! This self taught photographer who’s roamed the city’s streets snapping whatever caught his eye inadvertently created a wonderful snapshot of social history at the same time. Now his pictures from the 70s and 80s have come into their own evoking memories of people and places past. As a natural progression from his exhibitions and calendars Chris saw his dream come true with the release of his book New England just before Christmas. We’ve long been fans of Chris and his work here at ESP and the story of his images keeps moving on. After gaining national newspaper coverage when he staged reunions and recreated some of his favourite photos, his book has also gained recognition and is to be made available further afield in The Photographers Gallery in London and Koenig Books in Charing Cross Road as well as the Tate Modern. As a Peterborough girl I found Chris’ book a treasure trove of memories of my city and my life. Studying faces to see who I recognised and wondering, was I in the queue at the cinema waiting to see Grease, enjoyed spotting old shops that have faded from the High Street and old buildings almost forgotten. But for those that ‘New England’ doesn’t have the same city links as it does for us Peterborians, or for the younger generation who weren’t even around in the 70s, this wonderful book stands as a piece of social history in its own right and captures a story in every face. Even the old adverts in the background will raise a smile. I was delighted to hear from Chris that he has other projects in the pipeline and ESP will no doubt be following his story, but I’d recommend you grab a copy of New England (RRP £17.99) and take your own trip back in time. It’s available from several local outlets including the Tourist Information Centre, Peterborough Museum, Watertsones and Walkers book shop in Stamford at the special local price of £15.99. To find out more and view more of Chris’ photos visit www.chrisporsz.com. Sharon McAllister

NO RETURN FOR RIVERSIDE THIS YEAR
I hear it’s definite Stamford’s Riverside Festival will not go ahead this year. The organisers have been forced to cancel the event for the second year running. Last year the cancellation was caused by extensive rain causing severe flooding of The Meadows by the river. This was very much last minute and an extensive amount of preparation and equipment had been brought onto the site. Besides the obvious disappointment of local music fans, this meant the organisers incurred a lot of unrecoverable costs so an
insurance claim was submitted. The claim has still not paid out leaving the Riverside Association of Music and Arts with no choice but to cancel the 2013 Festival as well. It’s a shame because The Meadows provided an ideal arena for the event and I hope that the necessary settlement will be forthcoming so that the organisers can arrange some events and hopefully plan for Riverside 2014.
MOTT THE HOOPLE & ACϟDC UK prepare Ian for his main stage appearance at The Isle of Wight festival this June. Ian will be joined by guitarist Andy York (Ian’s producer and guitarist for John Mellencamp) and bass player David Roe (member of Johnny Cash Tenesee Three), and is sure to feature the classics, All the Young Dudes, All the Way to Memphis, and The Golden Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll. There are two great shows coming to The Stamford Corn Exchange in March.
Ian’s been cited as a major inspiration and reference point for numerous bands including The Clash, Kiss, REM, Motley Crue, Blur and Oasis.
Firstly an appearance by the legendary man in dark shades, Ian Hunter, lead singer with 70’s icons Mott the Hoople appears on Sunday March 17. It’s part of an acoustic tour as The Ian Hunter Acoustic trio
The support act is Jason Ringenberg of Jason and the Schorchers and it’s a great opportunity to see a singer/ songwriter who is so admired by his peers in the music industry.
And on Friday March 22 there’s an appearance by ACϟDC UK. The tribute band aim to bring all the onstage magic of ACϟDC. They claim to look like them, sound like them, and they generate the rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere of ACϟDC live in concert. As ACϟDC have not announced any tour plans for this year it could be the best chance you’ll have to get your fix of hard rock with numbers like Back in Black, Hells Bells, Thunderstruck, You Shook Me All Night Long and Highway To Hell. Mind you, I love Stamford Corn Exchange but it certainly isn’t The River Plate Stadium so it will be intriguing to see how ACϟDC UK tackle the venue! Box office: 01780 766455.
MCV CHARITY SOUL NIGHT OUT RETURNS The area’s soul fans will be delighted to hear that The Motor City Vipers are hosting yet another charity soul night out at The Brewery Tap on Saturday April 6 in association with Randall Rootz Community Music. Last year’s event was a huge success and is aimed at helping to raise much needed funds for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall. Since their formation in 2009, MCV have built a huge reputation which was certainly enhanced by a headline

appearance on the Friday night at last year’s Peterborough Beer Festival. Their set features some of the greatest soul music from the 60s and 70s including classics from the Motown, Stax and Atlantic labels, covering artists like Otis Redding, Four Tops, Supremes and Jackie Wilson. Support act on the night is Groove Cartel frontman, Martin Ferguson and the evening will also feature top soul DJs Julz, Ollie and Uncle Funk.
BARS ONLY @ THE WILLOW More Festival news. The Willow Festival 2013 is NOT banning alcohol consumption. However there is to be a ban on taking drinks into the Festival when it takes place on the Peterborough Embankment this May. On its return to the Peterborough music scene last year, the organisers stipulated a limit on the amount of alcohol that could be carried into the event by an individual. Clearly a few people flaunted this allowance by getting drunk and the organisers received some complaints that a few other people felt uncomfortable in the midst of their behaviour. So the organisers are trying to tackle the problem before it escalates and stress that they are taking the measures voluntarily. Willow Festival founder Mark Ringer told ESP – “As part of The Willow Festival's responsibilities, the organisers have to have control over how much alcohol the public consume at the festival. “In 2012 limits were put on the amount of alcohol the public could take to the event, but those limits were far exceeded in many cases and the policy was very difficult to police. Although the Police commended the event for how well it was run and how few problems there were, it was realised that organisers could not honestly say they were in control of the alcohol situation, which they are required to be. “In future, with larger crowds attending TWF, the lack of control could easily escalate and rather than wait for a problem to develop and risk litigation or loss of the license, TWF have seen fit to act. The event organisers can now refuse to serve those who are visibly too drunk and refuse entry to anyone who may be bringing alcohol onto the site.” I do not condone excessive drinking at Festivals but have to say during my visits to The Willow Festival last year, I saw only a very few people in that state. I did see a lot of people including families, having a great time in the sunshine on The Embankment, and I complimented the organisers in this ESP column for the superb weekend. I am looking forward to this year’s Willow Festival in May and will enjoy it for the music and other arts that will be on show FREE OF CHARGE on the Embankment. But I do have two worries – Firstly that just ‘two or three people’ have complained and caused this dramatic change of policy which has caused so much comment.
The event’s sure to sell out fast so if you want a ticket (priced £10 each) you need to purchase as soon as possible in person or at 01733 358500.
And secondly, I hope that the concessions that buy the bar space on the festival site will not be allowed to charge excessive prices for the drink because of the captive market – although Mark assures us the prices will be fair. This happens at many music gigs, particularly open air ones and that would spoil the spirit of what The Willow Festival is about. ESP is once again supporting this great festival and will be keeping you up to date with the gig schedule over the next couple of months. but also keep an eye on www.espmag.co.uk for all the latest.
