TV PROFESSOR BANYAN TREE OFFICIALLY GETS A FRESH OPENS LOOK NENE PARK Not only is the food delicious but we ACADEMY have to say the Banyan Tree restaurant on Westgate is looking hot too after a fantastic refurbishment! Owner Dinesh Odedra told ESP – “We’ve started our refurbishment and the first phase has been completed. We took feedback from our customers on what they’d like to see us do first. There was demand for more space downstairs. So, we extended the bar and lounge area and have also created a new space on the ground floor which is perfect for large groups booking their Christmas parties. “It’s created a totally different atmosphere in the restaurant where there is a great Test-tube baby pioneer Robertto vibe every night. It’s been absolutely horrible outside recently. The rain’s poured, the temperature’s plummeted and spring is taking its time to arrive this year. That’s why it’s probably best to stay indoors and indulge in some of the best cinema offerings at the John Clare Arts Cinema every Thursday throughout March.
First up on Thursday March 6 is I Am Nasrine. Micsha Sadeghi plays Nasrine, a young woman in Tehran, a free spirit who encounters brutality and misogyny from the authorities. Her father sends her away, along with her brother, Ali (Shiraz Haq), to the UK. The siblings emerge from a container lorry, and finally get relocated to the northeast as asylum seekers. Nasrine and Ali get a glimpse of a new but very painful kind of freedom. BAFTA nominated for outstanding debut.
Grease is the word… and you’ll be singing it at this special showing of the hit musical movie at the Key Theatre on Friday March 21. The evening begins with your host leading a vocal warm-up before they show you how to use your free fun pack. You’ll even get a chance to learn how to hand jive. Then just sit back and watch Danny & Sandy and the gang, while singing and dancing along to the lyrics as shown on the screen.
MARCH 2014 FILMS AT THE JOHN CLARE
OPEN ALL HOURS CELEBRATION TOUR Can you believe it’s 40 years since we were introduced to shopkeeper Arkwright and G-G-G-Grannville and the corner shop that was Open All Hours? The BBC’s Christmas special refreshed our interest in the show and now there’s a chance to enjoy the comedy again when Open All Hours Productions brings its tour of the critically acclaimed stage adaptation to Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre. Written by Roy Clarke OBE, and first aired in 1973, this much loved classic sitcom has been specially commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its television premiere. The production skilfully blends together classic moments from over 20 episodes into a fantastic evening of visual humour and comedic lines made famous by Britain's favourite shop keeper Albert Arkwright, and his put-upon errand boy, Granville.
Next up on Thursday March 13 is Looking for Hortense, a film that's positively marinated in tears, red wine and cigarette smoke. Bacri stars as Damien, a sad professor, shunned by both his wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his dad, and toiling to save a fetching local waitress (Isabelle Carré) from being deported. Hopes fade, and true love falters. But the performances ensure the film goes out with a graceful dying fall.
Enter Arkwright's emporium on Thursday March 27 & Friday March 28. Tickets are £13 (concessions £11) from the box office 01780 766455.
THE LITTLE MERMAID BALLET Join Ballet Theatre UK for a dramatic re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s alltime favourite story of The Little Mermaid, who falls in love with a human Prince and gives up everything to win his love. Ballet Theatre UK’s charming and poignant ballet explores the nature of longing, how making choices have lasting consequences and how goodness can be rewarded in unexpected ways.
On Thursday March 20 it’s Hannah Arendt. The banality of evil is examined in this solid and intelligent account of Arendt's controversial conclusions on the trial of Adolf Eichmann. Deftly blending low-key drama with archival black-and-white footage of the Nazi's cross-examination, director Margarethe von Trotta raises thorny questions about complicity and guilt, conclusions which caused outrage when first aired in the pages of the New Yorker. Award-winner Barbara Sukowa is excellently measured in the title role.
See this magical production at the Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre on Saturday March 29 for this new production touring the UK and Ireland which has been receiving great reviews. If you can’t make this show in Stamford, it will also be heading for Peterborough’s Key Theatre on May 2. Tickets are £18 (concessions £17.50) from the box office 01780 766455.
BROADWAY DIVAS @ THE KEY If you love the musicals you’ll love hearing these three beautiful leading ladies from the West End and touring musicals perform in concert. With over 50 wonderful songs from Broadway musicals these ladies have wowed audiences in theatre and concert venues all over the country. With stunning costumes and great musical arrangements and harmonies the Broadway Divas bring you some of your favourites as well as some secret gems that you may not have heard before. Catch them at the Key on Friday April 4. Tickets are £12 on 01733 207239.
Last but certainly not least on Thursday March 27 is the third instalment of the Cornetto trilogy The World’s End. The loud, harddrinking, immature Pegg draws four, well-settled friends to join him on the disastrous pub crawl they never completed 20 years earlier. It's funny, well observed, rowdy, and his companions – played by Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan and Nick Frost – are a plausible quartet of English types, square assholes refusing to accommodate the unwelcome Pegg. A PASSION FOR PASHA ESP’s Strictly reporter Sarah Tempest followed local hero Louis Smith through to victory on the show, but for now her Sarah Tempest attentions are firmly fixed on the moves of one Pasha Kovalev as he prepares to head for the city… Since he burst onto our screens on the 2011 series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, professional dancer Pasha Kovalev has become a firm favourite on the show and now he’s bringing his magic moves to the Cresset to give Peterborough a chance to get a close up glimpse of his ballroom. And Latin.
Photo: Michael Walker Photography
Although he’s only featured in the last three series of Strictly, he’s already as much of a fixture as Brucie’s attempts at jokes, and already 100 times more entertaining having taken two of his three celebrity partners to the final before being narrowly pipped at the post. Indeed if it wasn’t for the fact that he and Kimberley Walsh were beaten by our very own Peterborough hero Louis Smith for whom we shamelessly voted on speed dial, we’d be demanding a recount. When he’s on screen, Twitter goes mad and he’s earned himself a huge following including top chick lit author Marian Keyes who’s an unashamed fan and regularly tweets about her admiration and offers of her spare room for next time he’s in Ireland.
ESP’s Mikey Clarke catches up with singer Joe McElderry ahead of his Peterborough show... Mikey Clarke
I was one of the millions that watched Joe McElderry win 2009’s X Factor. I remember wanting him to do well because he seemed to have a genuinely nice personality to go with the amazing voice. His endearing, good natured charm and sunny, warm personality have raised him to the ranks of one of Britain’s best loved family entertainers. Joe, whose hit single ‘The Climb’ rocketed to number one, is bringing his 2014 Set Your Soul Alive nationwide tour to Peterborough. Fans of the singer will be pleased to know that he’ll be performing at The Cresset on Friday March 14. During my chat with the popular celeb, Joe discussed the television show that got him to where he is today. “The X Factor was a huge part of my career and people wouldn’t know who I was without it – it was an amazing platform for me,” he said. “Cheryl and I are still in touch and although I don’t speak to Simon much these days, if we’re at the same event, we’ll have a catch up. I don’t sing for his record label anymore but we get on well.” Joe McElderry has already achieved so much for a man in his early twenties. He told me that the highlight so far has been – “Releasing my fourth album. I didn’t know how well I’d do after the X Factor, so releasing my fourth album was a huge deal to me. “Another highlight will genuinely be doing this tour. I love seeing my fans, having a laugh with the audience and generally having a good time. I’ll try and stick around for a while after my performance at the Cresset if I can, to say hello to people and have a chat.”
Joe of course also demonstrated his amazing vocal abilities on the TV show Popstar To Operastar. Mentored by the tenor Rolando Villazon, he performed classical arias such as Nessun Dorma, and went on to win the show with a landslide victory, amassing 80% of the votes! Now a seasoned live performer, Joe puts on a charismatic performance and his four-piece backing band, made up from some of the best musicians in the business, compliment him perfectly so we’re expecting a great show. Joe has hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers. I wanted to know what tweets from his fans have stuck out from the rest. “I get a lot of people tweeting me pictures of my song lyrics tattooed to them. There’s a lot of pressure with that because if they don’t like me in fifteen years time, they’ll be stuck with tattoos they don’t want. I mustn’t complain though, it just shows how loyal and supportive my fans are.” On discussing life after the tour, Joe joked, “After appearing on The Jump, the next step of my career should surely be training for the Olympics? I’ll be sure to let you guys at ESP know how the training goes…” During our chat, Joe also discussed his experience on Channel 4’s The Jump, why he likes to change his style of music from time to time, and what people can expect from his latest tour. Read what he had to say by visiting www.espmag.co.uk To see Joe McElderry live at The Cresset on Friday March 14, call the box office on 01733 265705 or visit www.cresset.co.uk Ticket prices start from just £16.50.

But the offer will have to wait for the moment as Pasha is currently on tour with his professional dance partner Katya Virshilas and on Saturday April 12 they’ll be bringing their show ‘An Evening with Stars from Strictly’ to the Cresset where we’re promised fabulous costumes, stunning routines, guest dancers, a dazzling light show and of course, a Q & A session where Peterborough will be given the chance to ask Pasha anything we’ve ever wanted to know – except, perhaps, for his phone number. And on that subject, I’ll be catching up with Pasha closer to his visit to the ’boro and you can read the full interview online at www.espmag.co.uk. In the meantime, tickets for the show are available now from the Cresset box office on 01733 265705 or visit www.cresset.co.uk.

FOOD TREAT YOUR MUM @ THE BULL The Bull Hotel on Westgate looks like it has Mother’s Day all sewn up!
IT’S PERI PERI POSH! Members of the Peterborough United squad will put their cooking skills to the test at the beginning of March after being signed up by Nando’s to feed the people of the city.
If you want to give mum a real treat and rack up the brownie points big style they’ve got all bases covered. There’ll be a glass of fizz with canapés served to your table when you arrive followed by a delicious three course meal. Even better, all mums receive a gift too! Just to seal the deal it’s just £24.50 per adult which is great value and £13.95 for children under 10 years-old.
The players will follow in the footsteps of the Huddersfield Giants and the Northampton Saints when they take-over Nando’s for the evening and money raised on the evening will go directly to one of the club’s chosen charities, the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice.
“It is a great way of raising money for the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and we are looking forward to seeing so many supporters on the evening.” Krystal Burroughes, General Manager of Nando’s Peterborough commented: “We’re delighted to have teamed up with Peterborough Football club, which will see two well-known brands raise money for a fantastic cause. “It’s no secret that the Posh players love PERi-PERI chicken, so it will be a great chance for fans to see their favourite names get behind the grills and tills for an evening, all in the name of charity.” To book a spot at the restaurant for the takeover, either pop into the Cathedral Square Nando’s or call them on 01733 551222.

Mums don’t just need treating on Mother’s Day of course so if you’re out an about on Sunday March 16 why not drop by for a lazy Sunday brunch with a live jazz trio providing some background tunes. Brunch is served between 12 noon and 4pm.
VESUVIO HAS FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT ON THE MENU
The event will take place on Wednesday March 5 from 6.30pm until 8.30pm with admission just £3 and not only will the players be cooking up a storm in the kitchen, they will also be available to sign autographs and pose for pictures. On the evening, there will be a raffle to win superb prizes from Nando’s and the football club. Club captain Tommy Rowe, who is among the Posh players cooking up a treat in the kitchen at the Cathedral Square Nando’s restaurant, said: “The players are very much looking forward to taking over Nando’s for the evening. It is a personal favourite of the majority of the squad, so to get the chance to cook on the grills is an exciting opportunity.
Book now for Sunday March 30 on 01733 561364 – then all you need to do is remember the card!
Italian restaurant Vesuvio isn’t just known for its great food – these guys also staged some great theme nights and entertainment too.
MONROE’S LOOKS HOT FOR STEAKS & COCKTAILS You may have noticed a new venue on Broadway has thrown open its doors. Monroe's Cocktail Bar & Steakhouse Restaurant, just on the corner at 11-13 Broadway. It’s been fully refurbished and opened up under new owners and management. The guys tell us they’re offering delicious cocktails made by Monroe's award winning bar manager, Jonathan and their head chef, Marvin Martinez is serving up some fantastic high quality food in the upstairs Steakhouse so it sounds like it’s worth a try. To book a table call 01733 750587. They also tell us they also have some great nights and events planned for the bar, from supporting local live bands, musicians & singers, a new gay night and special guest DJ events so keep an eye out for more details soon.
Our Man Abut Town Pep Cipriano has found himself at a gangsters theme night there before and couldn’t rave enough about the fantastic food, service and great atmosphere. This month the restaurant has a Las Vegas vibe when popular local swing singer Peter Jay (who you may have seen at many events in Peterborough including the Christmas lights switch ons) will be entertaining diners. It’s all for a special charity night on March 21 for the Heal Charity. They’re going Roman in May at their toga night on May 23 and then Peter Jay returns on May 30 singing some great swing tunes. Looking ahead to the summer they’ll have a fantastic Italian night for their La Dolce Vita evening on August 1. Peter Jay returns with a Rat Pack night on September 5 and then it’s Viva Italia on September 12. These nights are usually sell outs so book early if any take your fancy on 01733 204599.

BREWERY TAP GOES BACK TO THE GROOVE It’s another of Graham Fairbairn’s great gigs for charity and his latest – Back to the Groove – promises to be the best yet. The Brewery Tap is once again playing host and this time expect a night of funk, soul, disco, jazz-funk, rare groove and classic R&B from back in the day. There’ll even be a dash of reggae with a live PA performed by O.T.C featuring Owen Wonder Artist.
PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:
MAMMA
It’s Mother’s Day on March 30 so it’s rather apt I pay my respects to my biggest hero of all – my mum! There isn’t enough space on this page to give justice to my mother and what a great inspiration she’s been to me. There also isn’t enough time – because as I write she’s serving up a plate of macaroni with meatballs, which I’ll be late for if I don’t get a move on. It’s easy for most of us to go on about how fabulous our mums are and that they’re the best in the world and all that jazz. So, I’m not going to labour the point too much but what I will do is reel off the things I most admire Mamma for. Her kids come first: Even before my mum’s own health and wellbeing it’s us two boys that matter the most and that she’d sacrifice everything for. Hard work ethic: Mamma’s 63 this year and she’s still working hard running a business, not to mention looking after two grown men at home. She’s house proud too and shows no sign of neglecting any of these responsibilities. Mixing it with anyone: Mamma can be the most social of all butterflies. She knows how to talk, dance and laugh and she’ll converse with a road sweeper or a lord of the manor. There are no classes in society in my mum’s world because everyone’s the same. Discussion and opinion: My mum’s famed for both. She’s not afraid to tell it as it is and is a believer that families should talk and be transparent with their issues. She’s fiercely loyal and takes no prisoners if someone tries to pull the wool over her eyes. Generosity and love: Mamma is generous with her time when it comes to people she respects. If she has something it’s yours too and if she knows you’re going without then she’ll make sure you don’t continue to. Mamma’s love and devotion is unconditional and a son cannot ask for more from his mum. I don’t cuddle my mum enough but writing this has reminded me that I should, especially as I know those meatballs were made with me in mind. Happy Mother’s Day Mamma.

NEW BIKE LAUNCHES AT BALDERSTON March is one of my favourite months of the year for two reasons. The clocks go forward, which means a cheeky motorcycle ride after work and Balderston unveil their 2014 BMW bikes.
Supporting them will be local DJs Stuart Skipworth, Dave Lyes and Otis. Entry is just £5 and all the money raised will be donated to Addenbrookes’ liver transplant unit. The big night is on Friday March 28 from 8pm. See you there.
Saturday March 15 is launch day for four new bikes at the Balderston showroom in Hampton. The dealership will also be open on the Sunday and bookings are now being taken for test rides on the two days. You’ll be able to get a leg over the new R 1200 GS Adventure, the R 1200 RT and the S 1000 R, which I covered off last month. The beautiful R nineT will also be in the showroom but not as a demo bike, as Balderston’s allocation of this model have already been sold! The R 1200 GS Adventure will allow you to travel on epic explorations or long distance tours, on rough roads, over stony tracks out in the wilderness, on tarmac, off-road, through deserts and just about anywhere else you challenge it with. It comes with rain and road modes and additional options will give you dynamic, endure and enduro pro riding modes. The 30 litre fuel tank ensures there’s plenty of miles between refuelling and the bike now comes with an on-board computer that’ll do everything you need it to short of making you a cup of coffee. As for the new R 1200 RT, it now offers more performance courtesy of a new engine pumping out bags of torque and 125 bhp. There’s more control too thanks to electronic suspension and different ride modes as with the Adventure. The queue to get on these bikes is likely to be a long one, so book for a test ride now or you’ll be hanging out the back at the burger van with me most of the day. Call Balderston on: 01733 565470.
LAST FEW TICKETS FOR BOXING SHOW There are only a handful of tickets left for the professional boxing show at The Cresset on Saturday March 8. Fight fans can see a tussle for two title bouts – the British Masters Gold Light Middleweight Championship and the International Masters Light Heavyweight crown. An undercard including bouts for Tommy Martin from St Neots and Jordan Gill of Chatteris are not to be missed. Call 07595 167679 for tickets.
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
NEKNOMINATION The latest craze on Facebook is crazy. Maybe it’s because I’m obviously getting too old and responsible but Neknomination (with a pint of booze) is: immature, negligent, attention-seeking, sad, uncouth, classless, uncreative and senseless and a death wish waiting to happen.

BACK IN THE DAY... The 1990s was arguably the best era for clubbing in our city. Not only was there at one point four mainstream (for ‘townies’) nightclubs operating, there were also a couple of ‘alternative’ venues attracting big crowds too.
white, bright and spacious décor meant you were constantly on show and looking good was no longer good enough, now you’d have to be immaculate. A large dance floor and striking DJ booth were other features designed to bring you out of hibernation.
This month’s Back In The Day pays homage to Liquid and in particular its manager at the time of opening – Mark May. The city’s clubbing fraternity didn’t realise we needed Liquid until it opened. We were happy (or at least I was) with what the night scene had to offer and there was something for everyone.
The VIP room was decked out with plush leather seating and a stylish bar. It was big enough for a small celebration but small enough to be important in. The VIP staff were the best and looked the best – a policy manager Mark May insisted on.
I’m generalising when I say something for everyone, as there was always a small fraction of revellers moaning we didn’t have a venue that played (delete appropriately) house, funk, funky house, acid house, acid jazz, funky jazz, dance, acid blah blah blah and funky blah blah blah. Best of all, when operators responded to what the people wanted by putting on nights dedicated to different or emerging music tastes, the lack of consistent support rendered them unsustainable. But when Liquid flung open its doors in the early noughties everything changed. Liquid was unique. The décor and style was never before seen in Peterborough and 21st century clubbing had arrived. To some of us though, Liquid was too radical. We were happy plodding along in our conventional venues with traditional DJs and comforting dark interiors. Our clubs were places we could hide in and get up to no good while the lights were low. But Liquid literally reinvented the wheel and gave birth to a new style of clubbing. Its
Like most nightclub managers Mark was immaculately turned out and he expected his customers to make a proper effort too. Anyone can don expensive clothes but to begin with that wasn’t good enough for Mark. He respected people who took pride in how they looked and liked people who had class. Reputation was everything to Mark but in the early days he pushed his quest for perfection too far when a female reveller was allegedly declined entry for being ‘too fat’ and went to the Evening Telegraph with her story. Mark played it down but saw it as a victory in demonstrating the high standards he aspired to bring to his club. In time Mark relaxed his views, as he was in danger of isolating customers who were ready to boycott Liquid for good. His job was to get the venue up and running and set the tone for a new breed of clubber in Peterborough. Mark achieved this to some degree but he was soon despatched to open another Liquid before he could cement a long lasting legacy. Liquid was never the same after he left but the city’s night scene was still a better place for it.
JOE AVATI IN TOWN THIS SEPTEMBER Australian-Italian comedian Joe Avati is returning to Peterborough with a brand new show after a four year absence and this time he’ll be starring at our community’s spiritual home – The Fleet. For anyone with Italian heritage or partners who haven’t seen Joe, I can promise he’ll leave you in fits of laughter as he recounts his hilarious stories of growing up the son of Italian immigrants with his unique brand of Italo Australian humour. Thursday September 18 is the night and Joe will take to the stage at 8pm. Tickets are £22 and won’t hang around long. Secure yours from The Fleet on: 01733 560218.

Double Paralympian swimmer, Lauren Steadman (who is originally from Peterborough), officially opened the new Stanground Sports Centre, and I was lucky enough to grab a few words with her. I asked why she had offered her support to the venue. “I live in Sawtry so I’m just down the road. I’m always happy to support local causes if I can,” she said. “I’m also passionate about promoting the importance of sport, especially to children as they are the next generation of athletes. I’m impressed by the facilities and will definitely be using them whenever I’m in the area.”
PARALYMPIAN STAR LAUNCHES NEW STANGROUND SPORTS CENTRE One of the city’s best sports centres in the city was officially opened recently by double Paralympian, Lauren Steadman. ESP’s Mikey Clarke went along to check out the venue and grabbed a few words with the sporting star...
Lauren was born missing her lower right arm, however this has challenged her to be the best she can be, and she relishes the chance to overcome barriers. On her disability, Lauren explained, “When I was born, my parents were worried that I wouldn’t be able to ever ride a bike or make friends. I’ve done everything they feared I wouldn’t do, and much more – I always found a way. I may look silly in the way I do certain things, but the point is that I do them.” Since the London Olympics, Lauren has switched from swimming to taking part in triathlon. “I first got into triathlon after my uncle, who is a triathlete, suggested I try it. I think it’s great pushing my body to the limits in not one but three sports.”
Stanground Sports Centre is an impressive state-of-the-art venue, which certainly impressed Paralympian Lauren Steadman.
Lauren plans to take part in the 2016 Rio Olympics and for any youngsters reading this who feel inspired to be a professional athlete, Lauren explained – “You have to love the sport you’re doing. You have to love it because you’ll be doing it a lot and will have to give it your all if you want to be a professional. You also have to take as many opportunities as you can – particularly whilst you’re young.”
The multi-million pound redevelopment, funded by Peterborough City Council, was completed a few weeks ago. It provides local residents with a broad range of engaging activities, including a brand new 25 metre pool which offers swimming lessons, public swimming, fitness classes, club

PANTHERS SPEEDWAY READY TO ROAR BACK INTO ACTION
Panthers have joined speedway’s hugely competitive Premier League and are set to light up the East of England Showground on Tuesday evenings as they chase glory in a host of competitions.
Plymouth in the South-West.
A night at the speedway is like no other professional sport: competitive, fast, action-packed and also family friendly, it appeals to all ages and we guarantee you’ll be talking about it afterwards.
A speedway match comprises two teams competing over 15 heats, with two riders from each team in each heat. They race over four laps of the shale circuit – and unlike other motorsports, spectators can see all of the action, all of the time.
Panthers compete in a league with 12 other clubs, the variety shown by the geographical spread from Edinburgh and Glasgow in the North right down to Somerset and
Local rivalry is supplied by Ipswich to the East and Hertfordshire-based Rye House, and all clubs enjoy loyal travelling support for away matches.
Points are awarded according to finishing positions in each race and build up over the evening with the overall winners allocated league points.

Peterborough Panthers race into a brand new era in 2014 – under new management and eager for success. The machines themselves are powered by 500cc engines, have no gears and are fuelled by methanol. And, uniquely, a speedway bike has NO BRAKES! Cornering is achieved by ‘power-sliding’ making the sport even more spectacular.
Ryan Fisher, as well as the Czech Republic skipper Ales Dryml, two riders from Denmark (including their captain Ulrich Ostergaard), and three from Great Britain.
Professional racers can enter the sport from the age of 16 and can typically spend around two decades in competition. Panthers’ 2014 team includes a healthy mix of experienced riders and rising young British stars.
Peterborough can boast some of the finest facilities in the country, including a large all-seater grandstand and a selection of outlets for food and drink. Newcomers to speedway will also note how supporters of both teams happily mingle with no hint of trouble, making this a true family sport.
Speedway is a true global sport, hence they currently track team captain of the USA national side,
The family aspect is a big priority to us, hence the riders are always available before and after matches
to meet supporters for autographs and photographs. They look to move their matches on at pace to cater for supporters with children of school age, but the bar is always open afterwards for those who wish to remain in the stadium, and the riders of both sides often pay a visit after racing. The Showground is regarded as one of the best race circuits in the sport, and if you haven’t been before they would be delighted to welcome you during the 2014 season. ...let's shop
23/7 Never one to need an excuse to shop, 23/7 in Stamford has an appropriate name for my obsession... And just to add to it they also have a second shop in Market Deeping. Spring is round the corner, and my wardrobe is looking too dreary now after such a long winter. 23/7 has certainly whet my appetite for summer brights that I could already envision exactly where and when I could wear these beautiful outfits. Summer dresses are always a favourite of mine but what I love more about this shop is the fact it isn't a huge high street chain so not only is the service more personal but the clothes on offer are much more individual. There are some great labels to choose… Pretty Geen, Lyle and Scott, Luke, Sugarhill Boutique and Fever to name but a few. I've put together some casual staple pieces that I feel would also look great for evening by simply adding a heel or a smarter shoe for the guys. So let's go shopping 23/7! Natasha Fierro

Famous Mums
As it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday March 30 we thought we’d catch up with a couple of local heroes to see who has the ‘world’s best mum’. It’s great to see two local stars pay tribute to the most important lady in their lives…
Photos: Emma Bothamley
Louis back in the day at home with his mum Elaine
OLYMPIC GYMNAST
LOUIS SMITH Olympic gymnast and Strictly Come Dancing winner Louis Smith has often paid tribute to his mum Elaine in many interviews. She’s proved single mums can still give their kids plenty of chances and clearly dotes on her boy. You’ll always see Elaine cheering him on at virtually everything he does. Louis lived with his mum in Eye until he had his own house built, but he’s not cut the apron strings completely and has stayed close to home only moving to nearby Helpston. Louis has just launched his own Youtube channel and remains in the public eye but still credits much of his success to his mum Elaine. “My mum's been everything to me in terms of my success,” Louis told ESP. “I just wouldn't have achieved what I have if she hadn't been there to help me all along the way.”
22
www.espmag.co.uk
So what makes her the best mum in the world? “She's the most selfless person I know. Since she had me and my brother, everything she's done has been to ensure the best life possible for us.” He might be a star and frequently on TV and across magazine spreads, but Elaine still keeps her boy in check and when we ask what she last told Louis off about he was quick to admit – “Probably leaving dirty laundry lying about the house yesterday!” It’s clear that his mum’s a massive influence so what has our sporting hero learned from his mum? “She's taught me how important it is to provide your children with opportunities,” says Louis. “She gave me every opportunity to try as many things as possible as a kid. So there wasn't a sport or a music lesson or anything that I didn't go to. Because of that I found gymnastics and the rest is history!” And what will he be doing for Mother's Day to make her feel special? “Every mum loves a box of chocolates and bunch of flowers don't they?!”

ACTOR
DAVID PROUD Former EastEnders actor David Proud from Whittlesey is going to pop up on the box again in the BBC Three Show, Siblings a new sitcom from the makers of The Inbetweeners due to air later this year. David will be the guest lead in one of the episodes. He’s not stopped since playing Adam Best on the TV soap and has been involved in several projects. David’s just finished shooting a feature film called iWitness which he describes as ‘a Rear Window for the download generation’. He plays John the lead character and as well as landing the lead role he was also offered a chance to produce the film alongside the production team so it marks his debut as a producer in a UK feature film. “I’m attached to a couple of other parts that should start soon but at the moment I’m about to finish writing my first feature film, Resonance, which is a chilling horror and we should be casting it and filming later this year.” David is another local star who believes his mum Wendy has played a major part in his career. “It's fair to say that I owe all my success to both my mum and dad,” David told ESP. “They have been so supportive all the way through my career. My mum even to this day keeps a scrap book of articles, which during my time on EastEnders got a little hard for her to keep up with. I love the fact I can share my success with her and take her to posh events every now and again. She just loves meeting people, she now knows how to work a room and mingle with the best of them!” David believes he’s learned a lot from his mum, too much to convey. “Oh God, how do you sum up a lifetime’s worth of wisdom? I'm still learning from her. I think I have her patience and compassion and she always looks for the best in people. For those people who know my mum they always think the world of her and always ask how she is. She's a mum and friend to lots of people, and I'm so proud of her.” For David, Wendy, is of course officially the best mum in the world – “When I was a teenager I had a bad operation, I was in intensive care and my veins went down, the doctors couldn't get a line in to give me pain killers all night, and I was in agony. She sat and held my hand all night. I guess she has never let go, she's always holding my hand, no matter how old I get or how far away I am.” While his career is taking him from acting to producing, writing and more David believes his mum’s played a huge part in how things have turned out and when asked how she’s shaped the person he is today he told us – “By pushing and supporting me in equal measure. Teaching me to never give up on any dream and making me see that every single moment in life is precious. “My life so far has been such a wonderful journey and I don't take it for granted. The acting game is full of highs and lows and you really have to keep a good handle on what’s important in life and for me family is everything.” So what treats can David’s mum expect this Mother’s Day? “It's actually her birthday two days later,” explains David, “so we have to celebrate for a whole weekend I reckon. Maybe shopping and dinner in one of her favourite restaurants in London, she's enjoyed a couple I have taken her too. Then maybe a quiet chill out at the Cuckoo in Alwalton as it's my family’s favourite place to spend quality time together. And of course presents, lots of presents!”

Susan Saunders
Lea Michele has belted out endless cover songs as Rachel on the hugely successful Glee, but now she’s set to be ‘Louder’ than ever with her very own solo album. ESP’s Susan Saunders looks at the life of Lea… Is it me or does time seem to fly by a lot quicker than when we were younger? In danger of sounding like my granny (God rest her soul!) years do fly by!
car stereo. Talking about Louder, Lea said: "It really encompasses my experiences over this past year and my journey as an artist up to this point.
That being said, it's difficult to begin to imagine the type of year that Glee star, Lea Michele, has had. Being a lead character in the ever-popular cult show, would have its pressures and its perks. Add to that the untimely passing of Lea's long-term boyfriend, Cory Monteith (who played the character of jock and singer Finn Hudson), and it paints the landscape for a tougher year than most will experience in a lifetime.
“There’s a lot of emotion but it’s also very encouraging and hopeful – it’s about pushing forward and living your life in a way that’s louder, stronger and bolder.
In truth, if you're anything like me, chances are you’ve grumbled about the odd pound (or 10) of weight gain as if it’s the end of the world. That makes the fact that Lea has found a way to not let a life-changing tragedy pull her down, even more admirable. Not that anyone would blame her if she hadn't, but somehow she's been able to draw on strength and harness emotion to create some pretty spectacular music, which is so inspiring for a young lady of 27. Golden Globe and Emmy nominated, Lea Michele is set to release her highly anticipated debut album Louder on Monday March 17, not without whetting our appetites with the release of the highly acclaimed single Cannonball on March 9. Unless you've had your head hidden under a rock for the past five years you would have seen a series – or four – of Glee and watched the on screen/ off screen relationships, the ups and downs of the cheerleaders and the jocks, winced at Sue Sylvester barking her put downs and swooned over Mr Hotty McHotson himself, Mr Schuester... Not forgetting hearing some remarkably high, power ballads from Lea's on screen character, Rachel Berry. Thankfully, love or loathe her successtransfixed character, Lea is not cringe worthy with her entrance onto the music scene, which has introduced some seriously credible, catchy and powerful music. Lea's album, Louder, is underscored by the singer’s gorgeous pop voice, beautiful ballads, and emotionallydriven lyrics – definitely one for the

“It’s really funny because when I was thinking about making this album everyone was asking me, ‘well are you doing original songs?’ and ‘are you doing covers?’ and I was like I don’t think there’s any covers left for me to do on an album, I’ve done them all on ‘Glee’ (laughs). But no they’re all original songs and you know my inspirations were definitely I love Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry and Adele. But, and I don’t know how it happened, but in the end I really feel like this sounds like me. It sounds like Lea Michele, and I think that’s really awesome.” Recorded over the past year, stand out tracks include the Sia penned lead single, Cannonball, the pop/rock anthem, On My Way and Battlefield – a heartfelt ballad. "I’m so excited to share this new side of me with my fans,” says Lea, but adds that she won’t be giving up the acting any time soon. “I get asked that question all the time – which I prefer more. You know, I get to be on ‘Glee’ and do both at the same time so I’m sort of spoiled right now. But you know right now I’m really loving exploring the world of being a performer, a musician, an artist. So this is really fun right now. But then of course, you know, I just don’t ever want to have to pick. I want to do both.” By the sounds of it, Lea's got a very great year ahead of her – we've got our album copy on order and we'd definitely recommend you do the same! Lea’s debut album Louder is available for pre-order now, visit www.LeaMicheleMusic.com for more info. We at ESP towers wish her the best of luck – Rachel Berry would be proud!

He still has his doubts about special law enforcement agency S.H.I.E.L.D., which increases further when a Senior Agent, Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), reveals a disturbing agenda. Captain America becomes mixed up in a dark political conspiracy. He also has hired hit men after him, and furthermore must deal with a new formidable enemy – the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). This is a lot – even for Captain America – to take on solo, so he joins forces with fellow heroes Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and The Falcon (Anthony Mackie).
Based on the successful racing game, Need for Speed focuses on a blue-collar mechanic named Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul). In an attempt to save his struggling garage, Tobey races cars on the side. One particularly disastrous race results in Tobey being framed for manslaughter. Once out of prison, he’s determined to get revenge on the man responsible for his false conviction.

Wes Anderson's latest film opened the Berlin Film Festival with rave reviews. It tells the story of a hotel concierge (Ralph Fiennes) who becomes the centre of suspicion when one of the venue’s oldest and richest patrons dies and leaves him a priceless work of art. The impressive cast includes Jude Law, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe and Edward Norton.
Academy Award winner Russell Crowe stars as Noah in this bigbudget Hollywood retelling of the Biblical story. In a world overrun by human sin, God gives Noah the task of building an Ark to save a select few from the coming flood. This action packed flick also stars Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson and Anthony Hopkins.
Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes, the Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) battles an invading army of Persians led by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and Artemisia (Eva Green) – the vengeful commander of the Persian navy. Expect more of the breath-taking visuals we saw in ‘300’.
While on a global tour (destinations including London, Berlin and Madrid), The Muppets find themselves unknowingly involved in a crime caper headed by the dastardly Constantine, a dead ringer for Kermit. Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey head up the human cast, alongside the large number of celebrity cameos.
Picking up where the first film ends, The Raid 2 follows Rama (Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force. The Raid provided audiences with aweinspiring fight scenes. Its sequel will be no exception.

TOMB RAIDER: DEFINITIVE EDITION (PS4/XONE) Out now
One of the best games of last year has been given a next-gen facelift for the PS4 and Xbox One.
#####
To be fair the game didn’t actually need much of a graphical update – it was gorgeous anyway – but the additional technology does make it look even more breathtakingly lifelike. That aside, you’ll search every nook-and-cranny of this beautifully rendered world as you build skills and upgrade weapons in the ultimate battle for survival – which is nigh-on faultless. If you haven’t played it before it is well worth the next-gen investment. If you have then it isn’t a necessity with minuscule additional content – but ingenuity still oozes from every pore.
Wake up Beautiful Every Day
THE LEGO MOVIE (WIIU/XONE/PS4/360/PS3/3DS/PSV) Out now The latest Lego game sadly fails to build on the critically-acclaimed success of the box-office dominating film. This is still colourfully playable fare as you star as mistaken-hero Emmet and impressive roster of pals – including the likes of Batman and Gandalf – but is hampered by sticking to the film’s rigid storyline confinements.
###
Kids should still enjoy this epic quest – with some great film cut-scenes and distinctive locations – but compared to the diversity of recent LEGO adventures offers some quite tepid level design.

XBOX ONE EXCLUSIVE: TITANFALL BETA (XONE/PC) Released: March 14 It looks like this Xbox One next-gen exclusive (it’s also on PC, but not PS4) could well be this generation’s Call of Duty if the recent Beta test is anything to go by. Colin Ward of GAME in Spalding – and general first-person shooter aficionado – gave this the once over for Game On and praised its exceptionally detailed graphics and intense firefights throughout the impressive game modes. Some of the loading times were a tad long, but this highly-anticipated online multiplayer game featuring ‘mech-style’ titans and their pilots, is looking simply fantastic. ABOUT TIME (12A)
PERFECT DVD GIFT FOR MOTHER’S DAY (MARCH 30): Released: Out now on DVD & Blu-ray Director Richard Curtis has thrown in a fair few things we’ve seen before in his previous films (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually, etc) and yet this rom-com somehow manages to feel fresh and original. The Time Travel concept may have something to do with that. About Time sees Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) celebrating his 21st birthday. His father (Curtis regular Bill Nighy) decides he’s now at the right age to be told the family secret… Tim comes from a long line of male time travellers. Tim wastes no time in trying out his new skill. Before long he’s using it to cross paths (many times) with the beautiful Mary (Rachel McAdams) in hope of making her fall in love with him. www.espmag.co.uk

Warwick Davis
MOTORPOINT’S NEW STAR ATTRACTION Hollywood star and Peterborough actor Warwick Davis will be making a special appearance at Motorpoint this month as part of celebrations for the official launch of the site’s new undercover canopy. This new £250k investment will be officially opened by the Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor June Stokes, on Friday February 28 at 1.30pm. Harry potter star Warwick Davis will also be dropping in during the afternoon and the ESP Dance Crew will be adding to the entertainment from around 6.30pm. It’ll mean that choosing you car in the dark will be a thing of the past at Motorpoint. You can now choose from more than 250 cars under the lights of their new canopy (pictured), which is bright, dry and weatherproof. Plus, just when you thought the sales experience at Motorpoint couldn’t get any better they go and launch ‘Deal and Deliver’, which means you can have your chosen car within two hours of saying ‘I do’. This means the car you want will be all prepped up and ready to drive away within two hours of purchase. And this time can quite easily be spent in the Motorpoint showroom where there’s free Wi-Fi, a TV and an impressive café with an excellent range of fresh food and homemade cakes I’d chop my right arm off for. Motorpoint is laying on food and drink for everyone at the official opening and the celebrations begin at 12 noon. You’re all invited, so I’ll see you there.
TWIST AND RIDE WITH SAFETY IN MIND The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership has launched a campaign targeting motorcyclists and their safety on our roads. ‘TWIST’ (That’s Why I Should Think!) is aimed at all motorcyclists (that means me too) whether they’re new to two wheels and ride scooters or have been riding for years on bigger machines. The campaign focuses on keeping up to speed with training, which will ultimately help us stay on our bikes and in one piece. Over the past three years 239 motorcyclists have been injured on Peterborough roads. There are a number of courses available that will help riders anticipate actions of other road users and more information about these can be found on www.twistandride.net.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD! According to a poll by IAM/Vision Critical of nearly 1,500 drivers, only 60 per cent concentrate when they’re behind the wheel. The good news is older drivers are much less likely to lose concentration while driving. Seventy-three per cent of over 65s concentrate on the road all the time.
Nearly a quarter of drivers say that simply daydreaming was the most common reason for not concentrating. Among 18-24 year-olds the figure is 30 per cent.
I’m guilty of swapping radio channels and CDs, searching for stuff in my door card pockets and being absorbed in conversation or debate.
The bad news is 50 per cent of younger drivers (aged 18-24) admit to not concentrating on driving 100 per cent of the time.
Other reasons given for not concentrating include: thinking about arriving at the destination and thinking about family, friends and personal relationships.
There’s nothing any of us can really do to ensure we’re 100 per cent focused when driving but we all need to try and make an effort. There are too many vehicles on
32
www.espmag.co.uk
today’s roads and far too many road signs and annoying cameras to contend with. Modern day driving has become more difficult but arguably we’ve become more skilled behind the wheel because of it.

HYPNO-SLIMMING
Last month we launched the ‘Pride and Joy’ feature where I asked you to send in a few words and a photo about the current car in your life or one you used to own that brings back fond memories.
Amazing new easy way to lose weight
Rai Devita is co-owner of the Barber Pole in Stanground and the one subject you can’t get away from chatting about while he lowers your ears is cars (and football). Rai’s a fellow petrol head and he emailed me the story of his pride and joy:

“I've had some cracking cars over the years like a BMW coupe, Alfa Romeo 156, Subaru Impreza and Honda S2000 to name a few. But only one car stands out as my favourite and that’s the Citroen AX GT. “I bought her for £2,700 in 1993 and had five great years of motoring before selling her to a friend for £2,000. The AX was like my girlfriend, everywhere I went, she went. Like many of us car enthusiasts in those days, I spent most of my hard earned cash trying to improve my baby. I had her lowered and added bigger, fatter alloys.
“She had a 1360cc engine, a top speed of 110 mph and made 0-60 in a very respectable 8.9 seconds. The AX only weighed 720kg, which gave it an exceptional power to weight ratio and appealed to drivers wanting close feedback and great driver interaction. “James May recently announced the AX GT was his favourite car of all time and Honest John describes it as a 'featherweight which packed a giant killing punch.’ Citroen AX GT’s are now a recognised old skool hatchback classic and excellent examples can fetch up to £6,000.

The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.
A CLASSIC YEAR AHEAD FOR SHOWS My idea of a perfect weekend afternoon in the sunshine would be attending a classic car show and mixing it with a bunch of anoraks while I drool over their motors. I attend several shows a year and most I have to travel some distance to, which doesn’t do my egg sandwich picnic in the boot any good. So, you can imagine how pleasing it is to hear the city council plans to stage its own event later this year. The Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show is lined up for September 13 - 14 and it’ll take place on the Embankment. Cars, bikes, buses, commercial vehicles, steam engines and anything else wheel orientated are being invited to attend. Entry to the show is free and money raised from the programme and other activities will go to East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. If you own a classic and want to register, email city.centre.services@peterborough.gov.uk or call 01733 453547. Another local show I’m looking forward to visiting again is the Yaxley Festival Classic Car Show, which takes place on Sunday May 18 at William de Yaxley School. The show debuted last year and attracted exhibitors from near and far with an eclectic selection of fascinating vehicles. For entry forms visit www.yaxleyfestival.info There are also very good annual classic car shows in Stamford and Maxey that are both worth a visit.

HOW ‘OIL’ CAN GIVE YOU A FRESHER MOUTH!
Forget the minty mouth wash… ESP’s resident nutritionist says a swoosh of oil could be the natural answer to a fresher mouth! We all want a nice, fresh mouth (especially if we want to be kissable!) and I bet everyone would say they’d love to avoid fillings at the dentist. So, let me introduce you to a strange sounding, but easy natural way to improve your oral health. I was first introduced early on in my nutrition and naturopathic journey to many natural ways to support health, one of those was an ancient tradition known as ‘oil pulling’ which is a simple technique that literally involves swishing oil around in the mouth. Bear with me, it may sound horrible but it’s easy and effective! Oil pulling has been used as a core practice in Ayurvedic medicine which is a holistic system of medicine which evolved in India some 3000-5000 years ago, which is native to the Indian subcontinent, now practiced in other parts of the world as a form of complementary medicine.
36
www.espmag.co.uk
When the oil is worked in the mouth by swishing and mixing with saliva and then pulled and sucked through the teeth for up to 15-20 minutes, bacteria found in the mouth and teeth stick to the oil. Our mouth is home to an assortment of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other debris (nice!) that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Using this old tradition has been shown in studies to reduce the levels of bacteria found in the mouth such as Streptococcus mutans which is responsible for those nasty dental cavities. Whilst there are many claims of it helping diabetes, asthma, PMS, skin disorders, sinus infections and more through detoxification processes this hasn’t yet been proven. However the data on reducing specific bacteria is interesting and the conclusion was that it can be effective in maintaining and improving oral health, including the improvement of:
• Halitosis (bad breath) • Gingivitis (gum disease) • Strengthening teeth, gums and jaw • Soothing dryness of throat, mouth and cracked lips If the thought of swishing oil around your mouth for 15 minutes turns your stomach, as it did mine, I can tell you it does becomes easier and in time with practice almost second nature. I’ve used this myself and advised many of my clients over the years to introduce this natural way of supporting oral hygiene as a daily habit. How to Oil Pull I’ve used both unrefined organic sesame oil and organic coconut with equally good effects. Ideally one tablespoon of oil (coconut needs holding in the mouth first as it is solid at room temperature or allow to melt in a bowl over some hot water if easier). I will admit that I started with a
teaspoon as I had to get used to oil in the mouth! However a tablespoon is the ideal amount. Start then to mix the oil with saliva which takes away any ‘oily’ feel. Then start swooshing, swishing and pulling through the teeth for 15 -20 minutes. Make sure you don’t swallow the oil as it’s now full of bacteria – spit it out into the loo, rinse your mouth with warm water and then brush your teeth as normal. Afterwards you will feel not only clean teeth but a clean mouth that stays fresh for much longer than brushing alone. Ideally oil pull 1x daily but it can be used up to 3x daily, you can easily add this into your daily routine by swishing in the shower, whilst on emails, making breakfast, or as I have done whilst writing this document – just don’t answer anyone if they call! PUB GUIDE s New
PLOUGHMAN CELERBATES TOP AWARD! Congrats to the team over at the Ploughman in Werrington as they have their shiny new Pub of the Year Award 2014! It’s a record second win for the pub which last won the prestigious award in 2011. They were the winners out of a poll of Peterborough & District CAMRA members, from a
shortlist of five pubs who’ve won Gold Awards which included his brother Stuart’s pub, The Dragon!

The Campaign for Real Ale team (CAMRA) made a special presentation to landlord Andy Simmonds and the pub was packed to celebrate with regulars downing some of the real ale he’s renowned for.
PUB MUSIC SCENE SET TO CHANGE Last month we told you about a new idea to give originals bands the chance to get more exposure by supporting popular covers bands on the pub circuit.
WORK BEGINS
Well the first of these was held at The Dragon in Werrington with The Tunnel giving stage time to originals band Skyfight and it was a raging success!
IN STAMFORD
The night saw some great tunes played out to a diverse audience which included plenty of new faces – exactly what we want to see in the pub music scene in the boro! It started with an acoustic set from Zakk Zoot Gray followed by Skyfight, playing their amazing original set, they were well appreciated by everyone. Finally, The Tunnel made a lot of noise playing their usual all out rock and metal tunes! Dan from Skyfight told us – "It was an amazing opportunity to support The Tunnel and an amazing opportunity to express our own music to a wider audience." The Dragon’s landlord Stuart Simmonds was very pleased with the night, and is keen to adopt original bands on his stage, with the support of established cover bands and said – "Big thanks to The Tunnel and Skyfight for their efforts. It was one of the greatest nights in this pub. The punters were happy and they enjoyed four hours of solid entertainment."
Photos: Emma Bothamley
James Grace-Caswell (The Tunnel) will be organising many more of these events with local bands such as Closed Circuit, who were also impressed with the success of the event. These nights will be rolled out throughout Peterborough pubs and other live music venues and James would like to encourage any covers or original bands to contact him via email on grace.caswell1987@gmail.com if they feel that they could contribute. James told ESP – “The main incentive for doing these nights is to showcase local songwriting talent, and give the Peterborough audience more diversity and more choice in their local pubs!”
ON NEW WETHERSPOON’S Building work is finally underway for the new Wetherspoon’s pub in the former Stamford Mercury building. Contractors for JD Wetherspoon are now on site with the aim of opening the new pub around May 27 in the former newspaper offices in Sheep Market. An appeal to the district council to open from 8am to midnight Sunday to Thursday and 8am to 1am Fridays and Saturdays was successful so come spring time there’ll be another late night venue in the town. The Captain Noel Newton in Oakham is already up and running as the pub chain continues to expand.

The Fleeting Minds

The judges might not have turned around on The Voice but there’s no turning back for John Quinn who has his mind set on his music and the festival circuit. Sharon McAllister meets The Fleeting Minds…
S
ince strumming on a tennis racket as a kid and proclaiming he was going to be like Paul McCartney when he grew up, Peterborough guy John Quinn has held onto his dreams of music success. The judges on The Voice might not have pressed the button at his BBC audition, but this guy doesn’t give up that easily. In fact he’s
place at the right time. In all the time we’ve been together we’ve never had an argument and I don’t know many bands who can say they get on that well.”
played together for years now in different things. I love doing our own material and I think this year we’ve just got to push it a bit more. We are a good live band. We can play, we’re all experienced musicians and have done quite a bit individually.”
A band that never argues, now there’s a rarity! But all the guys seem to be in agreement they’re as much good mates as they are tight musically. Despite John trying out for The Voice
John says he has no regrets about trying out for the show but thinks a different song choice (he sang Jake Bugg’s Lightning Bolt) might’ve showcased him better.
Photo: BBC/Wall to Wall Guy Levy
“In all honesty as much I was behind doing that song, ultimately I think it would’ve been more beneficial singing something like ‘You Do Something to Me’ by Paul Weller, because I do stuff like that and higher. I’ve done Marvin Gaye and that got me through to the audition.”
John and his band were straight off to a gig at The Met Lounge and into full on promotion of their new single and video, Dynamite. They’ve already secured a support slot for Reef and Soul II Soul and are currently plugging every festival organiser in the country for a slot this year. Don’t let John’s Mod style image pigeonhole your thoughts on the band – John certainly doesn’t – he likes a bit of a Paul Weller haircut and some Pretty Green and Fred Perry togs but he and the band are much more than just a look. He’s been a prolific songwriter since he was a teenager at St. John Fisher school and still spends his nights “up till stupid o’clock” writing and playing. He’s a perfectionist, tinkering with every note and lyric until he’s happy with it and consequently it took John a while to find a set of band mates who really got what he’s all about – but here they are, The Fleeting Minds, and they all seem to get on pretty damn well indeed. “I do this band because I love what we do, so if we make it or we don’t make it, it doesn’t really matter,” says bass player Louis Speed. “What I like is that we get together, we go out for a beer, we’re not just out because we’re in a band – we’re mates.
Guitarist John Dalton adds – “If it goes a bit further because of him getting on The Voice then that’s all good, we’ve been trying for a long time now to develop our songs. I’m looking forward to getting out there a lot more and getting a little bit more recognition for John’s songs really.” In down to earth style the guys gathered at Quinny’s mum’s to watch the show. “When it came on I went bright red,” John confessed, clearly not too big for his Mod boots just yet! “I didn’t think I was nervous on the day doing the audition but I think seeing it back I looked nervous because that minute or so before the count in from the drummer felt like an eternity!” It certainly had his Peterborough fans on their edge of their seats – and there are plenty of them. The band’s well known locally having formed back in 2009 playing guitar led post BritPop, indie tunes tinged with a 60’s feel. John’s the singer/songwriter and driving force but all the guys are capable, experienced and talented musicians. Drummer Paul played with The Dandys and supported Shed 7 but is loving his time with The Fleeting Minds – “Me and John have
“Obviously because I’ve been on there and had that exposure it has switched people on to the band so we’re just going to push ourselves,” says John. “I’m just looking forward to getting out gigging again, it’s been a while since we’ve done a load of dates consecutively so it’ll be nice to just get back out an start going up an down the country again and maybe do some radio interviews.” We’re sure there’ll be plenty of those! You can catch The Fleeting Minds locally at Mama Liz’s in Stamford on March 28. Check out www.thefleetingminds.com

Well it wouldn’t be rock ‘n’ roll otherwise I guess! Refreshingly unpretentious the guys seem hard working and committed so I’m hoping this recent TV hype won’t be fleeting and we can see another Peterborough success story.

John’s found himself in front of the cameras again filming the video for the band’s new single Dynamite – “I think you take acting for granted, ’cause I certainly can’t act! It was really fun to make though. I did make the fatal mistake of going out the night before and getting very drunk on the first night of the shoot so the next day I was a bit worse for wear...”

CHARITY SOUL NIGHT OUT RETURNS
After the huge success of the last two years’ events, 8-piece soul band, Motor City Vipers, are once again hosting their annual charity soul night out at The Brewery Tap on Saturday March 29, in association with Randall Rootz Community Music, to help raise funds and awareness for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough.
Photo: Mike Harris
Made up from a group of dedicated and professional musicians, Motor City Vipers were formed in the spring of 2009 and have gained themselves a reputation as one of the city’s most exciting party bands – playing on the same bill as Geno Washington and Kiki Dee over the last year alone and helping to keep alive some of the greatest soul music from the 60s and 70s – with hits from the Motown, Stax and Atlantic labels! The Vipers’ set list is like a who’s who of classic Motown and Northern Soul floor-fillers, from The Temptations, Wilson Pickett and Dobie Gray to The Supremes, Jackie Wilson and Otis Reading. The event also includes support from top soul DJs and Brewery Tap regulars, Julz and Uncle Funk, mixing the tunes into the early hours. The night is being organised as a fundraiser for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough, with tickets priced at £10 each and available from band members, DJs, or by credit/debit card from the Brewery Tap on 01733 358500. www.MotorCityVipers.co.uk
LIVEWIRE @ BOURNE CORN EXCHANGE portrayal of the livewire Angus Young delivering a truly amazing two hours of duck-walking rock.
The unique six man tribute to rock band AC/DC, return to The Corn Exchange in Bourne with their ‘Shake Your Foundations Tour 2014’ on Friday March 14. Complete with trademark cannons, a wall of Marshalls and two hours of high voltage rock ’n’ roll it should be a corker!

And in this AC/DC’s fortieth year, the band cover both eras as always with both Bon Scott and 'Pete' Brian Johnson present to take you on the Rock n Roll train for a night to remember. Those who’ve seen previous shows are already witness to the talent and dedication Ash gives on stage with his
The band aim to put you slap bang in the middle of the show with hit after hit, including Back in Black, Rosie and Highway to Hell, the songs go on and on until the cannons fire ceremoniously to bring the evening to a superb crescendo. If by this time you are still standing…I salute you! Tickets are £10 advance, £12 on the door and under 16’s get in for a fiver. Box office: 07828 032241. www.livewiredc.co.uk
A NEW HENDRIX EXPERIENCE! There are some great covers bands in this area and recently ESP dropped by to catch a new one – The RGR Hendrix Experience at the Solstice. They are a trio of musicians from the Cambridgeshire music scene brought together by a love of Jimi Hendrix’s music and our highlights on the night were Little Wing, Voodoo Chile and Purple Haze. There are some familiar faces in the band – Mike Williams (Recreation Ground Road/Failing Rockstar) fronts the band, combining years of studying Hendrix’s technique and style with his own driving guitar and rich melodic vocals. ‘Staceman’ (Rocket Dogs/Recreation Ground Road) is the driving force behind the band utilising his own passionate and unique style of drumming. Olly Hibble (Devils V Saints/Recreation Ground Road/Fallen) holds things together to create the authentic groove that defines the Hendrix soundscapes.
RGR Hendrix Experience are not your usual ‘tribute’ act, and whilst they don’t aim to look like the band they certainly recreate the authentic live sound that became synonymous with Hendrix, Mitchell and Redding in the late sixties. The live set is a solid mix of classic Hendrix tunes as well as some more obscure numbers and some of Jimi’s amazing covers of his own favourite tunes. This band is ideal for festivals and is almost guaranteed to get the crowd out of their chairs and up to the front! Find them on Facebook/RGR-HendrixExperience. They also have a new four track EP out called Fire. https://soundcloud.com/ rgrhendrixexperience You can next catch them locally at 2pm on Sunday April 13 at The Iron Horse Ranch in Market Deeping when they’ll be taking part in a three day festival in aid of Sense.

THE BRAYS ARE BACK!
As the Ghostbusters once famously said "We're back!" And this is the case for one of Peterborough's favourite bands The Brays.
The Brays have been away for a while touring their last album at some key venues across the country including O2 London, The Water Rats and the Clapham Grand. This has meant that gig dates in Peterborough have been scarce for the last 18 months which is something the boys are looking forward to changing. Since the departure of key member Matt Seddon leaving to live in China, The Brays have seen a couple of changes to the line-up which has set them back some time whilst new band members familiarise themselves with the extensive back catalogue of original material that The Brays have.
The Brays are happy to report the return of original drummer Keith Ford and Mark ‘Badger’ Daniels on piano which has been a huge boost. The Brays also have a brand new lead guitarist in Michael Firko who’s been genuinely astounding audiences and the existing members of the band with his talent since joining (at the tender age of 17). The Brays are currently booking dates within the Peterborough, Stamford and Deeping areas to re-unite with local audiences again as well as hoping to gain new followers. The band’s currently recording new material for a selection of forthcoming releases due in 2014 which the boys are really excited about… and so are we!

OPEN MIC GIGS @ ATTICA AND SOLSTICE Local guy James McCullen who’s known for his open mic nights has relocated them to Attica on Broadway. If you’re a local musician and fancy taking to the stage to show what you can do the open mic nights are held every Wednesday. Doors open from 7pm – 1am and you can find out more on facebook.com/jamesopenmic for more details.
STIFF LITTLE FINGERS PLAY THE BORO!
THE UK PINK FLOYD EXPERIENCE If you’re a fan of Floyd, the Cresset brings us another great tribute night not to be missed on Friday March 28. The UK Pink Floyd Experience replicates the line up of the full live Pink Floyd touring band of the late 80’s and 90’s with a strong focus on the Pulse Tour with its breathtaking lighting and visual show featuring songs from Dark Side of The Moon through to Division Bell. Lead vocalist and guitarist Paul Andrews fronts the band and has a voice that is remarkably similar to David Gilmour’s. Paul’s worked very hard to perfect his vocal delivery aiming to replicate every nuance and intonation. Add that to eight other musicians that share the same very high level of attention to detail and a sound is created that really is a Pink Floyd experience. Tickets are £20 from the Cresset box office on 01733 265705.
James is also running the Solstice Rocks nights staging regular live band nights and open mic sessions at the bar on Northminster. Check our Gig Guide for dates in the mag and for regular updates on the latest gigs visit www.espmag.co.uk
For those who remember a golden era of music, or for those who wish they had been there, don’t miss this gig as none other than Stiff Little Fingers take to the Cresset stage supported by the Godfathers. Irish punk rockers Stiff Little Fingers were formed in 1977 in Belfast, and along with the likes of the Clash, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Sham 69 and the Stranglers they were at the forefront of the punk movement. In 1979 they became the first band ever to hit the UK top 20 album charts on an independent label with their debut Inflammable Material. The album chronicled the band's anger and frustration at ‘the Troubles’ in Northern Ireland, and called on youth to create their own reality. SLF are a band with a rich musical legacy, their live shows being special events where energy and power are combined with sophisticated song-writing and musicianship to attract an ever growing fan base of many younger ‘new’ fans alongside the old diehards. See them right here in the city on Monday March 24 at the Cresset. Ticket price £21.50 (face value £20) on 01733 265705.
CLASSIC LEGENDS OF ROCK & FOLK THE STONES GREATEST HITS TOUR If you’re a fan of the Rolling Stones, this is your chance to enjoy all the hits in an authentic tribute show with a band who bring to the stage all the energy and excitement of a live Rolling Stones concert. From Honkey Tonk Woman to Start Me Up you’re guaranteed to get your Satisfaction! Catch ‘The Stones’ at Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre on Saturday March 8. Tickets are £16.50 from the box office on 01780 766455.
There’s an incredible line up coming to the Cresset for a unique show as three huge bands from the 60s & 70s take to the stage on Sunday March 30. Prog rock stars Curved Air make an exclusive live appearance with original singer Sonja Christina, in a rare opportunity to hear the full band perform live. Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash remain faithful to the Wishbone Ash blueprint, and The Strawbs complete the trio of great bands with David Cousins, Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk, who together formed the front line of the classic 1970’s line-up. Tickets are £25 from the Cresset box office on 01733 265705.
