SPRING TIME AT SACREWELL It’s a busy time of year at Sacrewell with plenty of fun events happening for all the family to enjoy. You can watch a lamb feeding show and learn about how they raise young stock from goats to chicks from March 5 - April 24 at Spring into Sacrewell and enjoy some fun with The Big Bunny Hunt – one of the highlights of the heritage farm attraction’s calendar – and this year they’ve burrowed a little deeper to make it a great family day out. New for this year, the hunt will be on foot across the whole site from March 25 - 28, ending at the bunny’s warren where successful adventurers can collect their delicious prize. Sacrewell’s Megan Allen told us: “We had to think on our feet this year and hop to it with some new ideas as Easter is so early. “Instead of leaving bunny shivering up in the woods, we’ve made him a cosy burrow in a new location which visitors will have to hunt out.” Regular tractor rides around the farm will also be running but won’t coincide with the event this year. The Big Bunny Hunt costs an additional £3 per child. Normal admission applies. For more info on all events visit www.sacrewell.org.uk.
Rose Landscapes indoor superstore is next to Activity World on Padholme Road.

library by artists who live or work in Peterborough. The library’s open Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm with late openings until 7pm on Thursday and Saturdays 10am – 4pm. Having toured the north of the country, Peterborough is the last and only southern stop on its tour. It could be the focus for a dinner party, or simply liven up an empty shelf or wall. The parade will start at the bottom of Bridge Street and will lead through to Cathedral Square where the artists will formally hand the library over into Peterborough’s care. There will also be a series of craft workshops, film showings and artists’ talks that run alongside the library. More details can be found at www.artlendinglibrary.org.uk.

Nene Park: the Untold Story was made possible by a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), through a Sharing Heritage grant and it’s hoped they’ll now be able to bid for more funds in future.
We all love to remember times from back in the day and if you’ve lived in Peterborough a while and visit Nene Park a new short film and a new trail will reveal the Park’s links with dyke jumping and Hollywood!
O
ver the years it’s been great to see how much this country park has flourished but it’s also hosted some wacky events, film crews and even had a seal swimming in its lakes. Now a special history project has unearthed some real gems from its past.
“Some of the great stories from its past have been revealed in a new film...” From James Bond to wildlife experts like David Bellamy and Chris Packham it’s seen its fair share of stars and has even featured in an
Clare Freeman, Head of Landscape said – “We are delighted to have received financial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to capture elements of the park’s history and to be able to share memories and historical gems to people in a variety of ways. The vision, commitment and passion of people involved in creating the park and the local pride in the park really comes through strongly in the recorded conversations.”
advert for B & Q paint. Hands up if you can remember the TV ad with a train running along the tracks with different coloured carriages! Some of the great stories from its past have been revealed in a new film, Nene Park: the Untold Story, which has captured the memories of people involved during the Park's formative years, as well as those local residents who’ve seen the park over the last 25 years. Local film-maker Martyn Moore has produced the documentary featuring some of the people who were involved in setting up and looking after the park in its early years of the 1970’s. It’ll really takes you back and you can watch it at the Visitor Centre at Ferry Meadows or through their website.
Project partners, Vivacity, are hosting an exhibition of some of the historical images from the park in the café at Peterborough Museum until the summer. The full recordings of the oral history interviews are freely accessible at the Peterborough Archives Centre, just book a time slot to visit the Archives Centre to have a listen.

QUALITY STONEWORKS SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER This month should hopefully see all the paperwork fall into place to roll out plans for a brand new independently run bar in our city centre. Regular readers will note in my last column I mentioned the former Ladbrokes building in Church Street could well be the chosen spot. A couple of Peterborough guys are proposing The Stoneworks will provide an alternative to watering holes that are currently on offer from national chains. The guys behind it don’t want to reveal too much too soon but having seen the application myself I can tell you it’s an exciting prospect if all goes through with some exciting touches being rolled out once they’re up and running. The focus will be on quality products with the aim of bringing something a little different to Peterborough. While the plans include a wide range of craft beer lines and bottles, it will be so much more too, with a great selection of wines, ciders and classic cocktails it will appeal to discerning punters looking for a quality night out.
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS AND MUM’S THE WORD
THE NICOLE FACTOR Big shout to my fellow columnist Keith Dalton who last month described Nicole Lawrence as ‘too good for Simon Cowell’. Of course, we all know he is right. Nicole is an absolute gem and we should all be proud to say she belongs to us in Peterborough. This girl makes singing look as effortless as me chomping down a Big Mac (but in a more graceful way). It’s been a few years since I’d heard Nicole sing and after enjoying her performance at The Royal Oak in Duddington a few weeks ago, I won’t be leaving it that long again. There’s nothing she can’t sing and what I love about Nicole the most is she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She performs with a smile and knows how to engage with her audience.
It’s Mother’s Day on March 6 and you’d better make the effort with a trip to the service station for some floundering flowers. She’s worth every penny and if you don’t treat her right remember how damaging she could be... – She’s still got photos of you as a naked newborn. Yes, your winkie is in full view. – She’ll always have a (potentially damaging) view on your choice of girlfriend / boyfriend...
Kicking back at The Royal Oak with me and my significant other were ESP family members Mikey ‘Martin Scorcese’ Clarke and his lovely wife Rachael. We were all blown away by the quality of food on offer at this delightful pub.
– She’ll think writing on your wall is the same as private messaging. Dangerous.
Everything was beautifully presented and tasted as if it was being prepared for royalty. I’m told this level of cuisine is what The Royal Oak is famed for and I’m already licking my lips in anticipation of a return visit.
– She knows how much you adored your first love and that you settled for second best.
Nicole is back at the Oak on April 22 and August 26. In the meantime there’s a St Patrick’s night celebration on March 18 with Irish band Sons of Kilcullen. And for a taste of the Caribbean the Jamaican night with a steel band on July 15 should see a few Malibu and cokes in full flow. For details visit www.theroyaloakduddington.com
– She’ll tell your in-laws you still sucked your thumb at aged 13.
– She’ll rub sun lotion on you if she thinks you’re burning. – She’ll always cook better than your partner and isn’t afraid to show it. – She reminds you that you came out of her, which means she knows you best.
There’s a market for this in our city centre and fingers crossed it won’t be long before we see The Stoneworks trading. Good luck guys.
Anyone wanting to meet former undisputed world heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe at The Solstice on March 31 needs to hurry and book their place.
So… watch this space. Personally I can’t wait!
Only a handful of tickets are left for an evening with this great champion where the food, auction of boxing memorabilia and a three-course meal are all packed into the price. Call Kevin Sanders on: 07872 601467 to reserve yours.

ITALIAN JOB PROVES THE WORLD’S GONE MAD! Just when I thought traditions in my native southern Italy were starting to dilute with each generation… A 40 year-old Italian woman is facing up to six years in jail after her husband took her to court for not cooking and cleaning enough. She’s being charged with 'mistreatment of the family' over her alleged lack of household chores and family duties. Her 47 year-old husband feels ‘insulted’ by the way she’s neglected cleaning their house and has been forced to ‘live in conditions with poor hygiene’.
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
He does the food shopping but it ends up in the bin, as his wife rarely cooks. Worse still, he’s been kicked out of their bedroom. Her trial date is set for October 12. I’ll be keeping tabs with interest. There are contextual arguments both for and against with this one, but we live in a ludicrous world where Americans consider Donald Trump to be a worthy candidate for presidency. If that’s anything to go by then anything’s possible.
POUTING
All over Facebook… it’s still occurring... I have some questions for these girls: Are you trying to resemble a fish? Has your plastic surgery gone wrong? Who told you pouting is attractive? Don’t you have teeth? Would you find boys more attractive if they started pouting too? Do you know what the word ‘smile’ means? Does pouting mean you’re happy or sad? Do you think you’re a celebrity?
AND ALL BECAUSE THE LADY LOVES A FIREMAN My application is obviously stuck in email spam. But even if Cadbury bothered to retrieve it I can’t compete with a fireman. More than 20,000 blokes applied and in the end they gave it to some guy with a big hose. It’s no surprise the new Milk Tray Man is a fireman. To women the fact these guys save lives is irrelevant, it’s all about how they look in uniform. According to Cadbury fireman Patrick was chosen because he’ll be able to best ‘show the nation what thoughtfulness is’. Whatever. I’m not bitter.

one is at Ferry Meadows on Sunday March 20 but you can also take part at Harveys Universal Fitness Centre in Bourne, Barnwell Country Park near Oundle and other locations, just check the Sport Relief website. The event’s open for anyone over 5 years-old and you can walk or run for 1, 3 or 6 miles around a 1 mile loop – it’s your choice. There’ll be a big warm up at the beginning to get you limbered up! Half of all the money raised by the public for Sport Relief is used to make a difference, right here at home in the UK. The other half is used to transform lives across the world’s poorest communities.
Olympic gymnast and Peterborough star Louis Smith is playing his part once again and will be teaming up with Idris Elba in a spoof of TV crime drama, Luther. The sketch will be aired during the Sport Relief broadcast on Friday March 18. Market Deeping darts ace Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams is back on our screens again in Let’s Play Darts for Sport Relief on BBC2 on Sundays, teamed with comedian Greg Davies star of BBC Three’s Cuckoo. Now you can play your part too by joining in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile at various locations in the area. The main Peterborough

You can walk, run, swim, or cycle for Sport Relief and local Swimathons are taking place at various leisure centres. You can pick your speed and distance so it’s not just for the super fit – the idea is that we can all do our bit. It takes place between March 18 - 20 with Stanground Sports Centre hosting the one for Peterborough and the 1Life Deepings Leisure Centre, Bourne Leisure Centre and Stamford Leisure Pool also taking part.
The guys at Peterborough Greyhound Stadium will be doing their bit for Sport Relief on Friday March 18 and Saturday March 19 by running a full marathon on each night! Yes, that's 26 gruelling miles. They'll be clocking up the miles on treadmills provided by Fengate Fitness but there's a twist... They'll start running from the fall of the flag in the first greyhound race of the evening and aim to complete the distance by the time the last dog crosses the finish line in the last race. Rather them than us but respect to the crew. Apart from a good rubdown they'll also gladly take donations big or small for their efforts. BBQ NIGHTS AT SUNDAYS! a multi-award winning cookshack smoker imported from the home of real BBQ, Oklahoma USA and is cooked for a minimum of 12 hours. The taste of the meat really does represent the dedication, time and care that goes into cooking it and as my dining companion said: “I’m a meat eater and I like this.”
In last month’s column, I touched on the new BBQ Nights at the popular city centre eatery Sundays, owned by David Beever. I was delighted when the team asked if I wanted to pop along and sample some of their delicacies – I’ve always been a fan of Sundays and will wave the flag for independent businesses as much as I can. I couldn’t wait to see what the food and vibe was like now this cool daytime restaurant has opened its doors during the evening and taken on a whole new look and flavour. I was greeted with a big smile and a heartfelt hello by front of house manager Russell Curl followed by the enthusiastic and experienced head chef Carl Blackstock. It’s great to meet people with a genuine passion for what they do and both these guys really care about the food they serve and ensuring customers have a great experience. Candles on the table, mellow lighting, the gentle chatter and laughter of diners and of course, delicious food, made my whole dining experience extremely relaxed and enjoyable, the way it should be! So let’s talk food. The meat such as beef brisket, pulled pork, lamb kebabs and ribs are all cooked on
You’ll be pleased to hear that in keeping with the independent feel, most of the meat you’ll eat at BBQ Nights has full traceability as they buy and support awardwinning butchers G.Simpson (www.gsimpsonbutchers.co.uk), who they’ve been purchasing their meat from for 11 years now. The BBQ boards are amazing and great to share with a friend whilst enjoying a drink and a chat. You can choose your board size and we had the pleasure of tasting the Mixed Meat Board which is
ideal for two to share. It’s just £25 which I think is great value when you think of the quality of the food you’re eating. Each board comes with a selection of meats, bread, house pickles and any two sides, such as corn on the cob, fries, mac & cheese (I had that and it was so tasty!), sweet potato fries and house slaw. If all that isn’t enough, you can tuck into one of their delicious homemade puddings such as Yarde Farm Ice Cream. They also serve beers, wine and soft drinks along with teas and coffees. So show your support for David and his team and make a date with BBQ Nights on Cumbergate from 6pm until late Wednesday to Sundays. Call 01733 554334 to book.

SPRING TRENDS At last there are some great new looks hitting the rails and the Spring season trends are coming through. The boho theme is a relaxed look with smock style tops with embroidery, while the new sporty theme sees mesh tops and sports brand style writing adorning tops. The check shirt is strong for girls and guys as is the bomber jacket. Bodies have made a return for a smooth silhouette, denim of all kinds remains a staple (don’t be afraid to mix it up and double denim!), ditsy florals are still going strong and the biker jacket remains a wardrobe staple. Layering is key, particularly for guys with shirts worn over jumpers or a coat over another jacket.

paparazzi Caught in the act? There’s a great live music scene in the city so we sent ESP Paparazzi photographer Mike Harris out an about to capture the action at some great local gigs. Over at the Burghley Club it was a fantastic atmosphere as the Dizzy Miss Lizzys played one of their final gigs – we’ll miss these guys! Other local pubs were also rocking out with The Crown packed for Let There B/DC and in Werrington there was a tribute act pleasing punters at The Cock Inn with Lizzy On The Loose banging out Thin Lizzy hits. LITTLE MIX ARE HOT FOR THE SUMMER! We always keep you up to date with the hottest talent and this month’s ESP cover stars Little Mix have just sold out Summer Saturday Live at Newmarket Racecourses, while last month’s cover girl Jess Glynne has also been added to this summer’s concert line up. The two acts, recently seen on The Brits, are among several top stars already signed up for the concert series starting in June, so music wise it’s going to be a long hot summer! Get ready to party and place a few bets as the racecourse comes alive after an exciting day’s racing with great music acts taking to the outdoor stage. Summer Saturday Live is the closing event of The Jockey Club Live and Newmarket Racecourse’s summer season which also takes in the award-winning Newmarket Nights. Fans of the multi-million selling girl-band snapped up thousands of tickets six months ahead of the August 27 event. The girls from Little Mix said: “We can’t wait to come and see all of our fans at Summer Saturday Live at Newmarket in August! We love open air shows and promise an amazing day out – together we will give summer the perfect send off before school starts.” Currently doing great with their single Secret Love Song featuring Jason Derullo taken from their hugely successful Get Weird album it must seem a lifetime ago since the girls – Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall – won The X Factor in 2011.
Since then they’ve sold over 7 million records, had two UK No.1 singles and two platinum albums DNA and Salute and have broken the Spice Girls’ long-held record of highest debut US chart position for a UK girl group. Not bad eh? No wonder this local gig, which follows their UK and world tour, has sold out so fast and Amy Starkey, Regional Director East of Jockey Club Racecourses, can’t wait to see them. “We are absolutely delighted to announce our first sell-out with Summer Saturday Live featuring Little Mix. Not only do we anticipate a fantastic summer on the Adnams July Course, it’s going to be a special year for the town as we celebrate 350 years of making history; a heritage we are very proud to be a part of. “Our final event of the summer, always has a fantastic family atmosphere associated with it and Little Mix will no doubt provide an amazing show to round off another brilliant year of music here at Newmarket.”
Last year’s award winning 2015 season launched with a sell out crowd of 22,000 achieved in a record breaking 40 minutes for the showgirl herself, and another ESP cover star, gorgeous Kylie Minogue! It’s fantastic to see the wonderfully talented Jess Glynne as part of this year’s line-up headlining on August 12 and Jess says – “I can’t wait to share some summer evenings with my fans!” The kind hearted singer will be donating a portion of her fee to an equine charity, of which The Jockey Club Live will match. Jess is the name of the moment with her latest singles Hold Me Now and Ain’t Got Far To Go following hot on the heels of a whole run of hits and collaborations and her number-one charting debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, has now turned double platinum in the UK, making it the highest selling debut album of the past year.
The Jockey Club Live are leading promoters on the UK live scene. From delivering a spectacular line up of some of the hottest chart talent and legendary household names in 2015, this year is set to continue the incredible success. Alongside Little Mix and Jess Glynne in August, other artists already announced include The Corrs and Will Young in June and Busted and Tears For Fears in July. These music nights are renowned for combining a fun filled evening at the races with a spectacular evening concert in the informal and relaxed open-air setting of the famous racecourse. Whether you fancy a flutter or a dance with friends and family the event is certain to be an odds on favourite for all. Tickets are on sale at www.thejockeyclublive.co.uk

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg Director: Zack Snyder
DC Comics have finally jumped on the superhero ensemble bandwagon – with this enticing set-up to a Justice League film. And it doesn’t get anymore tempting than a showdown between Superman (Henry Cavill) – who launched Warner Bros’ DC first phase with 2013’s Man of Steel – and Batman (with Ben Affleck donning the mask for the latest Caped Crusader incarnation) as this aims to mirror the success that Marvel has achieved with their franchise. After the trillion of dollars worth of damage caused by Supes’ battle with General Zod in Metropolis during the climax of his standalone movie, a growing number of people are now seeing the Man of Steel as a threat to humanity. Despite being a beacon of hope to parts of society, Bruce Wayne and his Dark Knight alter-
But while the two superhero powers get embroiled in a bitter feud, a terrifying new threat arises from Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor – after getting his hands on Zod’s DNA – providing a foe far more powerful than both of them.

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT
KUNG FU PANDA 3
10 CLOVERFIELD LANE
EDDIE THE EAGLE
This British-based sequel to 2013’s sleeper hit Olympus has Fallen, sees Gerard Butler’s secret service agent Mike Banning uncover a plot to assassinate all world leaders attending the funeral of the Prime Minister, after his mysterious death. Aaron Eckhart’s President re-joins the ride – along with Morgan Freeman and Angela Bassett – in this high-octane action thriller.
In the third film of the fourpart Divergent dystopian sci-fi series, Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) leave the only home and family they’ve ever known in order to find a peaceful solution for their embroiled city. But beyond the ‘wall’ the duo are taken into protective custody by a mysterious agency known as the Bureau of Genetic Welfare – led by Jeff Daniels’ David.
After Jack Black's Po reunites with his long lost father, the reacquainted duo travel to a secret paradise to meet other members of their clumsy brethren in this Dreamworks animation. But when supernatural villain Kai sweeps across China defeating all the kung fu masters, Po must train a village full of harmless and fun-loving pandas – and turn them into a band of ultimate warriors.
Waking up from a car accident, a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds herself in the basement of a man (John Goodman) who says he’s saved her life from a chemical attack that’s left the outside world uninhabitable. Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams is on production duties for this sci-fi thriller that’s been described as a ‘blood relative’ to his 2008 hit Cloverfield.
The early reviews are glowing for this biographical drama based on the legendary story of tenaciously loveable British underdog ski jumper Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards (Kingsman’s Taron Egerton). With the help of his charismatic coach (Hugh Jackman), Eddie took on the establishment with a ‘never say die’ attitude that won the hearts of sports fans throughout the world.

STREET FIGHTER V (PS4/PC)
This PS4 console-exclusive is another step up from the impressive SF IV – offering arguably the best mechanics ever seen in the franchise. It includes the impressive new V-system, but unfortunately it has been released before all modes have been finalised – including basic #### ‘versus CPU’ and standard ‘Arcade’ modes (even though they’re coming soon) – and offers a fairly wafer-thin character list that includes favorites such as Ryu, Chun-Li and a mixture of diverse combatants, but also has some glaring omissions like Guile. So a five-star fighting game with two-star ‘bare bones’ content – that provides more of a dizzying ‘Spinning Bird Kick’ than a knockout ‘Dragon Punch’.

(X1/PS4/360/PS3/WIIU/3DS/PSV/PC) The latest Lego game provides an entry full of fan service – but unfortunately takes one step forward and two steps back for the franchise. The forward step comes in the form of an exciting evolution for a Lego game – humorous quick time ### events that forgo the usual button-mashing scenarios – but everything else pretty much follows a slightly tiring formula, and it has a quite choppy storyline.

If you like your sport loud and fast then speedway should be right up your street. If you’ve not given it a try before why not take a look as Peterborough Panthers prepare to take to the dirt…
Panthers captain Ulrich Ostergaard celebrating his victory in the Premier League Riders' Championship individual event last season
And you can rest assured there’ll be plenty of thrills and spills along the way as they battle for glory in a white knuckle world. ‘No brakes, no gears, no fear,’ is the motto of a sport in which riders can hit speeds of up to 70mph while zooming round the East of England Showground track. The 2016 campaign kicks-off in star-studded style on Sunday March 13 when captain Ulrich Ostergaard stages his ‘10 Year Spectacular’. The popular Danish racer has been granted a testimonial following more than a decade of fine service to British Speedway and he’s assembled a terrific line-up which features three of his team-mates from the Panthers title-winning side of 2006. Danes Hans Andersen and Niels Kristian Iversen, and Polish ace Piotr Swiderski, return from the side which stormed to Elite League glory. The meeting will feature a 16-man individual event involving six of the current Peterborough riders along with a host of junior and senior support races.
And the icing on the cake will be an appearance from one of the greatest riders of all-time. Danish legend Hans Nielsen, who starred in 22 individual, pairs and team world title successes while dominating the sport in the 1980s and 1990s, is to fly in for the occasion. “I was lucky enough to ride in Hans’ farewell meeting in Denmark back in 1999,” said Ostergaard. “And I’m so proud and thankful that my hero will now be part of my special day.” Panthers’ first competitive meeting of the season follows on Easter Monday, March 28 when they entertain East Anglian rivals Ipswich Witches in the Premier League Cup.

There were two retirements, a sacking and a host of other injury-enforced changes along the way which ensured a baptism of fire for Rathbone in his first season at the helm. Rathbone had successfully spearhead a major survival effort the previous winter when the future of the club was in the balance – quite an achievement for a man who faces a 300-mile round-trip just to attend home meetings from his base in Middlesbrough.
That is one of three competitions in which the club will compete this season along with the league and the KO Cup and promoter Ged Rathbone has high hopes of a successful campaign. “Put it this way, I wouldn’t swap my team for any other in the league,” said Rathbone, on a line-up which features five Danes and two Brits. “We’ve got seven men all with the potential for big improvement and if they all manage that individually, we will take some stopping as a team. "And hopefully the people of Peterborough will get behind us again, just as they did last year. Our crowds were up on the previous season and hopefully we can keep them going up." Panthers reached the semi-finals of the Premier League play-offs in 2015 despite a season plagued by

Indian road trip with a difference!
Recently ESP’s Darren Grigas ventured out to India on what was to be a fantastic road trip of fun, excitement, fear and accomplishment. Here’s his report back on the crazy event that is The Dumball Rally… The Ambassador whilst modelled on the British Morris Oxford back in 1958 was the first car manufactured in India and the model barely changed all the way to final production in 2014. It’s still used by bureaucrats and politicians with a chauffeur or as taxis in many Indian cities. It’s fondly referred to as India's ‘King of the road’.
I
was one of around 120 'thinkoutside-the-box' types taking part in The Dumball Rally with my brother and brother-in-law. "Oh the Gumball?" people often ask, the one with all the Ferraris, Lamborghinis and fancy super-cars cruising across the states? No no no, this is a charity event the other end of the spectrum driving questionably unreliable old bangers across 1,000s of miles of dodgy terrain. There were 36 Hindustan Ambassadors waiting for us in Chennai to ‘hopefully’ carry us around 2,500km over some of the worst roads India could offer. Some of these were 40 years old so we had no guarantee we'd all make the distance!
34
www.espmag.co.uk
So we arrived to see a line-up of beautiful (but old) Ambassadors and were greeted by a very lively Indian mini-carnival. The rally was accompanied by a film crew producing a show for a channel on Sky and the front man, presenter Jonny played host as each team had to step up and draw a key at random to see which car we got and we then had 3 - 4 hours to decorate them. Once our cars were ready we split into squadrons of six cars each with walkie talkies so we could all communicate for navigation purposes and also throw random banter across the airwaves and shout when we'd see monkeys, cows in the road or a family of five on a moped, (this is not unusual in India). We set off by around 9am with up to
300 miles ahead of us each day. In a car that struggles to reach 60mph on a clear road (these are rare) and are advised to not go over 70kph (43.5mph) for fear of blowing the engines these journeys were up to 12 hours on the road each day. Add to that the fact it's almost 40 degrees, you can’t use the air con for fear of extra engine strain plus you're in fancy dress and you've got a long, hot and sticky day ahead! Over the course of the trip we saw some incredible and humbling parts of India, with people living in makeshift huts – even the better places would be condemned in the UK. Yet everyone seemed happy, they were always thrilled to see our convoys of colourful cars and fancy dressed fools inside. Me and my brothers were dressed as superheroes which was a huge hit with the locals. The three of us had taken loads of colouring and puzzle books as well as crayons and balloons which we handed out to local children. It was madness but so nice to see how excited they were. Such lovely people smiling, waving and of course grabbing a selfie with us whenever possible.
The cars were really put to the test when we hit the Western Ghats and tea plantations, a mountainous jungle route some of which was wild tiger and elephant territory! The climbs were steep, the hairpins sharp with sheer drops and the Indian support team had to collect a few cars along the way that just gave out. The takeaway feeling of the rally is quite inexplicable combining the discomfort of a hot sticky drive day after day with the joy of the sights and experiences you'd rarely get anywhere else. Experiences like getting local builders to help lift our car out of deep sand which my brother had driven into to get down to ask fishermen if we could do yoga on their boats. 40 of us setting up as a choir to sing Yellow Submarine to villagers whilst having a car that is actually a yellow submarine, or striking up cricket matches with locals at every opportunity with our own cricket themed cars and teams. To top it all off, not only is the Dumball a truly amazing (yet tiring) life experience but with everyone doing their bit for charity we raised a staggering £130,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust which adds that special something to the whole fantastic journey. It’s the 19th annual Peterborough Lambretta and Vespa Scooter Club ‘egg run’ to The Manor children’s home and Sue Ryder Hospice on Saturday March 12 and it promises to be another eggcellent turnout. Hundreds of scooterists will gather at The Cherry Tree pub on Oundle Road for a 10am custom show ahead of the12.30pm ride-out. There’s always a brilliant atmosphere at this event and enthusiasts come from far and wide just to take part. Every rider brings an egg with them and the

DO WE NEED SUPERFOODS TO BE SUPER HEALTHY? A piece of writing popped up on my radar recently discussing healthy eating and how to supercharge our health with superfoods. Superfoods have been so called due to their higher nutritional value, mainly antioxidant properties or plant chemicals (phytochemicals), or even healthier fat levels. Many of what are said to be ‘superfoods’ come from the plant kingdom such as berries, pomegranates, kiwi, leafy greens, quinoa, nuts and seeds for example. Whilst these ‘super’ foods offer excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, fibre, phytochemicals and
powder, lucuma powder, matcha powder, chia seeds, maca powder, fruit and green concentrated powders etc. The cost of some of these exotic so called superfoods can be out of reach for many and we also have to consider the cost to the indigenous people who provide them. Take for example quinoa which is a seed type grain that boasts higher fibre, protein and nutrients and has
‘Many of what are said to be ‘superfoods’ come from the plant kingdom such as berries...’ antioxidants there are many hundreds of plant foods on offer that also deliver the same powerhouse of nutrients particularly when locally and seasonally grown and even more so if they’re grown in organic rich soils and without pesticides. Superfoods have become ‘trendy’ over the past few years, suddenly we find a smoothie is not a smoothie unless it contains scoops of raw cacao
38
www.espmag.co.uk
become a popular western food in place of gluten. However the local people who’ve depended on this crop can often no longer afford it for themselves! Some superfoods also take a lot more to digest, think of the dried goji berry, we have to chew well and use more energy to hydrate it to be able to absorb the nutrients from it, whereas some leafy
locally grown greens or a fresh piece of apple with the water content takes less from our digestion and gives us good ‘superfood nutrition’ with much greater ease. Whilst I enjoy the occasional addition of a chia seed pudding or using quinoa as a healthy alternative to other grains, I don’t eat these as a daily staple. I prefer to enjoy plant foods fresh, organic or at least locally grown such as green leafy veg, fruit, avocado, seeds and nuts rather than adding in those costly powders. So if you’ve been caught up in the drive to use superfood powders and dried super berries, know that locally grown, seasonal varieties of colourful fruit and vegetables will offer you a powerhouse of nutrients. These can be juiced up to give more concentrated nutrients in a glass, blended up in smoothies and enjoyed eaten in a meal at a fraction of the cost. Spring’s coming so it’s time to get out there! Make 2016 the year you challenge yourself to go that little bit further, get healthier, fitter and more active. Whether it’s just a regular walk around Ferry Meadows, taking part in Race For Life or the Perkins Great Eastern Run there are plenty of walks, runs and cycling events to join or just step it out in the countryside…
Ultra-Women! A few months ago two lovely Peterborough ladies Claire and Sharon asked me if I could create a training plan for a little run they’d signed up for. Well when I say little run it was in fact a 41 mile ultra-marathon. Yes FORTY ONE MILES! level of fitness was a distant memory and besides which this is way further than a marathon. I have been inspired by their will and determination and their unwavering confidence that ‘WE WILL DO IT’.
Claire and Sharon Having not received a place for the London Marathon in the ballot they decided in brilliant fashion to take Darren Grigas on something 15 miles longer than a marathon, naturally...? So on March 6 they'll set off to cover ‘The Millennium Way in a Day' from Newport to Burton following waterways and old rail tracks on a route that's 95% trails. Now you'd expect this kind of distance is only for the ultra-athletic teens and twenty somethings without a scrap of fat on them right? Well Claire and Sharon both laughingly admit they're no Jessica Ennis or Paula Radcliffe but simply two regular women who you may not recognise as athletes if you met them, but as far as I'm concerned they are just that; ultra-marathon runners. They’re proof of how far you can push beyond your perceived limits and achieve amazing feats if you're determined enough. When they registered for this behemoth challenge they were only running 5km Park Runs and up to 7-8 miles for their longest weekly training runs. Back in October the Perkins half-marathon was Claire’s longest ever run and Sharon’s longest in many years. Sharon had many years ago run three marathons so at least has the knowledge and mental strength to know she's capable, but that
They’ve been following a pretty intense and comprehensive training regime I created for them which includes strength conditioning, circuits, diet guidance and of course lots and lots of running. I very kindly let them rest on Fridays. I know, I'm a big softy right! These amazing ladies have committed to the plan and pushed themselves onwards week after week all throughout winter and I'm proud of how far they've come already but crossing that line will really be quite fantastic. The driving force for them as well as the incredible personal accomplishment is to raise money in support of a very dear friend Kirsty, who at just 30 years old was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Kirsty is an incredible woman who copes with her condition day in day out and has also battled to overcome a tumour on her spinal cord as if MS wasn't enough. Despite the enormity of it, Claire and Sharon believe their 41 miles is nothing in comparison to what Kirsty and many others have to go through every day. Their ultra-challenge is a gesture they hope can raise money and make a difference to MS sufferers and help where possible. If you’re as inspired and impressed as I am, please support Claire and Sharon on their challenge and to read Kirsty's story visit www.justgiving.com/ClairePallett2 Darren Grigas Darrengrigas.com
WALKING FOOTBALL IN YAXLEY Rekindle your love of the beautiful game with Walking Football! This cool incentive is growing in popularity across England and now Yaxley Parish Council is introducing this new trend here. Two free taster sessions will run on Friday March 11 and Friday March 18 from 7pm to 8pm and anybody with an interest in playing is welcome to join in! Regular weekly sessions will then commence in April along with existing sessions in other areas that are attracting players, both men and women, not at the peak of physical fitness of all ages right up to people in their mid-80s, so age is no excuse! Interested? Then pop along to the Astro Pitch at Middletons Road Recreation Ground, call 07964 496259 or email steve@icasports.com. Visit www.goo.gl/JT4ZUP for more info. Anna Ruggiero
GET ON YOUR BIKE AT NENE PARK! Join a Nene Park ranger on a bicycle tour of the Nene Park Estate on Thursday March 10. The tour will take you across the park with glimpses of all trust land from east to west but we hear that it’s not for the faint hearted and you need to be physically fit! You’ll also need to get yourself a mountain bike which you can hire from Rutland Cycles if you pre-book and the organisers recommend you wear a cycle helmet. This is a free event although a kindly donation of £2 is suggested. To book your place call 01733 234193. Anna Ruggiero

Familiar names and rising stars will be visiting but the highlight has got to be the return to his home city for Darren Walsh, winner of the prestigious 2015 Joke of the Fringe competition at the Edinburgh Festival. There are still tickets left and at only £6 you will get more than your money’s worth of laughs. Darren will be performing his stand-up comedy show Punderbolt on Friday March 11 at 7.15pm in the Key Studio (tickets available on 01733 207239). This show was a sell-out at the Edinburgh Festival last summer, but for those unfamiliar with Darren, although he's now based in London, he was born and raised in Peterborough, went to school in Eastfield and his mum Patsy lives just around the corner from The Crown on Lincoln Road! But when it comes to jokes Darren wears the comedy crown… made from one liners, videos, sound effects, drawings and visual wordplay. There isn't a subject under the sun that he hasn't got at least one joke for so, as many ESP readers treat comedy gigs as a date night, here's an insight into the romantic world of Darren Walsh…. "I met a girl on a bus once. It went well. I got off with her." "Went on a date with a gym instructor. Didn't work out." "Took a girl on a date to a coconut shy. We hit it off straight away." "I asked an Anaesthesiologist if she wanted to go for a drink and she said yes. S'date." "I went on a date up the Statue of Liberty, but on the way down we got completely lost and had a massive argument. Must've got off on the wrong foot." "If you told me I had the power to make people fall in love by firing arrows at them, I wouldn't believe you. I may be daft, but I'm not Cupid." "I think I'm in love with a ladder, but I'm just taking it one step at a time." "Went on a date with a retractable pen. We just clicked." "I went Psychic Speed Dating the other day, but every woman I met was a grumpy Clairvoyant. I thought, I've got to find a happy Medium somewhere..."

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…
Television exposure can do one of two things. It can enhance your reputation or it can damage it and there’s no doubt that the live coverage of the Emirates FA Cup fourth round replay against West Bromwich Albion at the ABAX Stadium last month has raised the profile of one or two of the Peterborough United squad.

former Newcastle United striker and one time manager (although he prefers to leave that out of his previous accomplishments) Alan Shearer named him Man of the Match and Kevin Kilbane said something nice too. Our very own Jack Collison was also full or praise.
expecting Mary Berry they were very much disappointed) but this fixture was screened across Asia, Australasia, Europe and America with Fox Sports showing the clash in the States.
Samuelsen is just 18-years-old and looks about 12. He also has a bit of a resemblance to Justin Bieber and trust me, it is too late to say I am sorry about anything you don’t agree with in this column. Norway has a star on their hands. He has already represented his country at under 18 level and it won’t be long before he makes his senior debut.
am confident that Martin Samuelsen will be a star in the Premier League. He’s a grounded individual, he has a wonderful personality and he has frightening ability for one so young. The loan market has its critics in this wonderful world of football, but for Peterborough United, it’s worked out perfectly.
“He has already represented his country at under 18 level...”
And one country in Europe in particular lapped it up. In fact, if Norway was a dog, it would have been wagging its tail at a ferocious pace. And I know, that sentence alone probably wouldn’t make it into any broadsheet newspaper, but this is my column and if I want to make reference to a dog for no particular reason, I will do so.
I
rishman Chris Forrester has put a few millions on his value after a superb display at the heart of midfield, but it was an on-loan starlet that caught the eye both in this country and across the globe. You see, when the BBC are involved, it becomes a worldwide audience and our tie with Premier League side West Brom was a huge attraction. In this country alone, the tie was watched by 5.6 million viewers (several of those probably tuned in for the Bake Off, but if they were

Anyway, I digress. Earlier in the season, Posh signed talented teenager Martin Samuelsen on a season long loan deal from West Ham United and he was already being talked about by fans and pundits alike following a stunning first goal in English football when he danced around the Sheffield United defence in style, but the skills he demonstrated against the Baggies had everyone talking. Match of the Day presenter and all round Walkers enthusiast Gary Lineker was purring about his ability,
He’s such a star back home that since that appearance on TV, he’s been followed by a camera crew in and around Peterborough. They’ve interviewed him at the training ground, filmed him at a signing session in the Club Shop, spoken to his team-mates in the dressing room and interviewed manager Graham Westley at the weekly press conference. I like to make bold predictions, and I
We have a talented youngster, who’s getting first team football in the Football League and hopefully between now and the end of the season, he can help us get to where we want to be and in years to come, when Martin looks back at what I’m sure will be a glittering career, he can say that Peterborough United helped him along the way.

INTRODUCING:
SATURDAY NIGHT GROOVE by Anna Ruggiero Last issue, I touched on a fantastic night at the Brewery Tap, Saturday Night Groove – an old school night taking place on the last Saturday of every month. To find out more, I caught up with local legend Eddie Nash who plays at the night alongside Rick Allen… Enlighten ESP readers. Tell us more about Saturday Night Groove? “It’s a night set up to bring the groove back to the city! The Brewery Tap crowd is a wide age range and the music reflects that in the same way. We play tunes from clubs back in the day such as Annabel’s,

Canters/Winners, L’Aristo’s, Gables , Rinaldo’s, 5th Avenue, Shanghai Sam’s and Quo-Vadis and plenty more that I had the pleasure of working at.” So when can we come along and party? “It takes place every Saturday night with resident DJ Rick Allen and then I guest DJ on the last Saturday of each month. It’s on 9pm-2am and entry’s free.” And what tunes can we expect on the night? “It’s difficult to narrow it down because of the wide scope and time
span but here’s a flavour of the type of tunes people can look forward to – My Love Won’t Be Denied – Len Boone, Somebody Else’s Guy – Jocelyn Brown, Voodoo Ray – A Guy Called Gerald, Superbad – James Brown, Heard It All Before – Sunshine Anderson, Bootylicious – Destiny’s Child, Little L – Jamiroquai, It Takes Two – Rob Base and EZ Rock and Sincere – MJ Cole. What's your background in the scene? “I started at Focus Youth Club every Wednesday from the age of 14. I’ve been a resident DJ in many clubs in Peterborough and also as a guest.
“I created my own night in the 90s called CottonBass and BrownSuga and I’ve worked with lots of great Peterborough DJs over the years that are still spinning now. I’ve learnt a lot from all of them.” What do you think to the current nightlife scene in Peterborough? “Peterborough doesn’t have any nightclubs now and late bars have taken over. It’s not a bad thing; it’s just an adjustment to what people want. The Brewery Tap’s Saturday Night Groove is a great nostalgic night for music lovers. I play music you may have forgotten, not heard for a long time but really loved.”

cover of this song that they did a few years ago. They’re a band that we love, and we really like the original version by Robyn, so it just made sense for us to do 'Dancing On My Own'. We love that it's a complete twist on the original too."
2016 looks set to be an exciting year for new Peterborough band Idolising Nova. They’ve just released a cover version of Robyn’s Dancing On My Own. I’ve heard a preview of it and it’s very impressive. Idolising Nova are Jack Smith (bass/vocals), Ollie Gale (guitar/vocals), Kris Lee (lead guitar) and Kyle O'Sullivan (drums) and together they’ve produced a different slant on an already attractive song. I asked Jack why choose that particular tune? He told me – "We were having a think about what song to cover and looked on YouTube for some inspiration, and we were very much inspired by Kings of Leon's
This release is accompanied by a promotional video produced in Hunstanton by Malovee Studios and the band had a great day filming. Jack told me – "It was a great experience playing there with the spotlights on us and haze machines, and we're really pleased with the end product. To add to this the video got over 1000 views within the first 24 hours of it being uploaded which we really didn't expect. We're very thankful and appreciate people taking the time to listen to upcoming bands." This will be followed by the release of their debut single. They’ve been signed to Main Stage Records and are currently recording which will be followed by a radio tour, and many gigs across the UK. Idolising Nova are also planning local gigs when their busy schedule permits and ESP will keep you up to date with all the plans for this up and coming band. Super smooth Bryan Ferry is to headline the big open air concert at Burghley House in Stamford this year on June 11. From his earliest recordings with Roxy Music at the beginning of the 1970s, Bryan has taken his place as one of the most iconic and innovative artists to emerge in popular music. In his work you hear a vocal and lyrical brilliance that merges the intensity of Lou Reed, the poise of Sinatra and the charisma of Serge Gainsbourg. Make no mistake about it, his voice is unique. But then there is something extra… a verve and performance so laid back that he’s almost horizontal! He has established an ‘outstanding image, and sartorial style in common with the late David Bowie’, according to The Independent.
One of this area’s most popular bands, The Brays are back with a new line up having spent most of last year writing and in the studio in preparation for a number of single and EP launches this year. The new line up is Michael Firko (lead guitar), Eddie Seddon (bass guitar), Mark ‘Badger’ Daniels (keyboards), Keith Ford (drums) and Gavin Hyde (rhythm guitar and lead vocals). The first release comes out on March 11 called Dirty Revolution. The launch of the single will see The Brays playing at The Solstice that night. The venue is held in high regard by the band and lead singer Gav told ESP – “This area is our musical home, and The Solstice have been such huge supporters of us and our music over the years so it’s good to launch the first single there.” With more recorded material already completed further releases from The Brays are expected this year, and a lot of people have been anticipating an exciting 2016 for the band. It’s good to see them back.

The man with an absolutely unique voice, Andy Fairweather Low, is coming to Stamford Corn Exchange on Wednesday March 30. He came to prominence as the lead singer of Amen Corner in the sixties with hits like Bend Me, Shape Me, Hello Suzie and If Paradise Is Half As Nice. Fans will also remember his big solo hit Wide Eyed And Legless. His pedigree’s second to none because since those early days Andy’s gone on to work with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and recently toured with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, and as a member of The Bill Wyman Rhythm Kings on their European Tour. These are just a few names out of a list of amazing musicians on his CV. The Stamford date is part of a UK tour for Andy and his band The Low Riders and 2013 saw them opening the shows on Eric Clapton’s European tour. Indeed Andy’s worked as part of the maestro’s band many times. The date’s sure to sell well so get your tickets quick from the box office on 01780 766455.
With Roxy Music Bryan Ferry enjoyed three number one albums and ten top ten hits, including Virginia Plain, Love Is The Drug, Dance Away, Angel Eyes, and Jealous Guy. His solo hits include A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall and Let’s Stick Together and his career has continued very successfully by mixing Roxy Music reunions and solo work. Promoter Colin Ward told ESP – “We are delighted to have such a major star at this year’s Burghley concert.” Bryan Ferry will appear at Burghley shortly after two nights at the London Palladium, and just prior to his 2016 tour of the USA which commences in July. The announcement of his appearance comes shortly after another Bryan (Adams) was confirmed for another local open air concert in August at Peterborough Embankment. Tickets for Bryan Ferry’s June gig are available from the website www.livepromotionsconcerts.co.uk/burghley -house

One of the resident bands from the world famous Cavern Club, Liverpool, will be playing at a charity event at the Castle Sports Complex, Spalding on March 12. This follows last year’s appearance at the venue, when the organisers had the idea to bring to Spalding one of the finest 50’s & 60’s tribute bands from Liverpool, in order to raise vital funds for a local dog rescue charity, The Central German Rescue Cenre. The event was a success with a large audience raising over £2,000 for the charity. The Rockits, who are Chris Grindrod (bass), Chris Hunt (lead guitar), Justin Crowe (keyboard)
and Mike Beck (drums) have an exciting set list that includes tracks from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Elvis, Spencer Davis and The Kinks, The success of last year encouraged the organisers to bring The Rockits back so tickets for the gig will be in demand. Tickets can be obtained from the South Holland Centre box office, 01775 764777.
It’s been a year since Stealer were on the local live music scene. Now they return with a new line up and new playlist of classic rock numbers. They’ve been joined by a new vocalist called Sully, who’s played in Cambridge based rock bands for many years, who names the highlight of his career as playing to thousands at The Bulldog Bash. The band were previously a Free and Bad Company tribute but their set list now includes tunes by Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, Stereophonics, Billy Idol, ZZ Top and the Rolling Stones. Mike, Steve and Ray are very enthused that they have now found a frontman that will keep the punters entertained with his energy, wit and vocal talent and tell us he’s certainly no shrinking violet! The band’s been rehearsing solidly for the last six months and are now actively seeking gigs in the local area so if you’d like to book them for your venue contact Stealer on 07875 485314 or steantval@btinternet.com.
