They act as a visual distraction for children whilst medical staff undertake required investigations and treatment. General Manager of Liquid, Geraldine, commented – “Everyone at Liquid is delighted to be able to support the amazing work that the Amazon ward does for the children and the local community, and we hope that our donation will help them continue with the highest level of care that they provide.”

No need to worry about any disruption over Christmas though, as the majority of work will be through the middle of the year. We shall look forward to the final product!

LEMAR IS HOT ACT AT FIRE AND ICE BALL Singer Lemar wowed fans at this year’s Spencer’s Ball at the East of England Showground, which had a fabulous fire and ice theme. Liza Schwartz from Spencer’s hair salon organised the event to raise money for the local Phoenix School which her son Spencer attends and was delighted with how the night went. “It was a really good night with lots of people saying it was the best ever so we’re all really pleased,” said Liza. “We took a gamble on booking Lemar but he was well worth it. When he came on everyone surged forward. He did a lovely meet and greet afterwards. Everyone was in their element! “I’d like to thank all the local businesses that supported us this year and event designer Leah Marazzo. We’re already working on next year’s.” Almost 300 people enjoyed the evening which also included entertainment from Maurice from The Drifters, and helped raise £4,000. The cash will be divided between Phoenix School, Corpal and Cherry Lodge Respite Centre.
“We took a gamble on booking Lemar but he was well worth it.”
Face of ESP Lauren Hughes helped with the charity auction and looked stunning in a gorgeous gown supplied by Swanky Rags on Broadway (Tel: 01733 345181 – thank you Rachel!) Lauren met local actor David Proud, who played Adam Best in EastEnders as well as Lemar and says she had a wonderful night – “The ball was fantastic – all the money raised went to a worthy cause and it really touched my heart listening to the stories about the children. Meeting Lemar was a great opportunity, although he was very busy having his photos taken with all his fans. He’s an amazing singer!”

VINEYARD GRAPE NEWS FOR NIGHT SCENE Memories of the Tom Lock on Lincoln Road now rest in Peterborough’s watering hole archives (I could tell you some stories…) and in its place it’s time for the newly opened Vineyard to create good times for a new generation. Closed at the start of the year, the venue’s been transformed thanks to a £250,000 refurbishment and it’s now 21st century despite its Victorian exterior. This is obviously good news for the night-time economy (as long as people use it) and even better news for that end of town, which has a trendy wine bar to be proud of. There’s a swish raised seating area in front of the bay window part of the bar where you can sip your vino and there’s plenty of room to eat with your wine, as it caters for around 70 people.
TOPOS TOPS IT FOR ME Lunchtimes in the city centre just got even better. The new look Topo Gigio’s is serving a buffet feast of pizza, pasta and other delights for only £5.99. The restaurant has recently undergone a subtle menu and décor revamp. Topo the mouse has been moved from his upstairs hiding place to just beside the entrance, which means you’re greeted by him as soon as you walk through the door.
CAUGHT IN THE ACT!
Nicole: “Here’s me doing the splits, Scott. I could teach you but…not here… so that means, I’ll just have to give you my number…”
The colour of the walls has been changed to give the place a softer, more welcoming feel and a nice touch are the hand painted pictures of the Colosseum, a gondola and Topo working away in his kitchen. Regulars will notice additions to the menu including Peri-Peri flame grilled chicken (inspired by Portuguese owner Paulo Rodrigues) and other mouth-watering meat and fish dishes from the Mediterranean. Check it out at www.topogigios.com

Food is a mix of English favourites and classic dishes from abroad too. Serious wine drinkers will be more than pleased with an impressive selection and there are bottled and draught beers also on tap.

More than 100 Harley Davidson owners rode their bikes from different parts of England to Market Deeping for the Harley Daze event where arm wrestling challenges (for women too), best bike competitions and an all-you-can-eat American-style barbeque made it feel like all my Christmases had come at once. Hundreds of locals, exhibiting businesses and the Mayor supported the day, which helped raise money for the Afghan Heroes charity. Music by The Lesley Curtis Band played out the afternoon but not before a series of trophy presentations for winning bike categories including one to an 89 year-old man who’s been riding since 1936! Thanks Michelle for being photographer – next time I’ll snap you on yours. I’m already looking forward to the next Harley Daze. Keep an eye out for details on www.harleysdiner.co.uk

SIZE DEFINITELY DOESN’T MATTER… It must’ve been quite a picture. Watching me attempt to climb onto a motorbike the size of a house, engaging first gear and wobbling away like a child on its maiden bicycle journey without stabilisers. The BMW K1600 GTL is a beast. Or so it seemed until I managed to shift up to second – and then riding this machine was effortless. I’m not used to riding tourers and didn’t understand what the fuss was about until I’d ridden this ‘creme de la creme’ example of one. Balderston have already sold two thirds of their year’s allocation of these bikes. There are only seven left. Be quick if you want a motorcycling equivalent of a ride in a Bentley. Matty Speaks...
BRIT POP LAUNCH! I start the first gig with my new band Cool Britannia on June 3 at the Corn Exchange in Stamford so it’s going to be a busy month getting photos done, a video recorded and some heavy rehearsals that I’m pleased to be doing at my home from home – the Key Theatre. The project was an idea of mine and manager Glen Povey when we were racking our brains thinking what would be a good tribute show. As it seems the 90s is now the latest nostalgic era we thought it would be a great idea to do a band paying tribute to such artists as Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Verve, Paul Weller and many more! For more info join our Cool Britannia facebook page or go to www.britpopmusic.co.uk
I caught up with Mike from Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge the other week and it’s great to hear that their battle with the local council has finally all been sorted out. The venue’s been under threat for some time now so he’s relieved to finally have things resolved and says the future’s looking good. I for one think it’s a great thing that Mama Liz’s will be able to carry on bringing the great nights/bands that it has been doing over the last few years – there’s nothing else quite like it here. Mike also mentioned Voodoo is putting on its first play which is something they’re very proud of, The King’s Face, a play by Steven Young will be performed at the venue on May 18 and 19 at 7.30pm and tickets are priced at £8. A great smile makes all the difference and if you want the
celebrity look, teeth whitening could be the ideal way to
boost your looks and your
confidence. Lauren Hughes has plenty to smile about as the Face of ESP and with the help of the Smile Boutique she’s now looking whiter than white.
One of her great range of prizes was teeth whitening at the award winning Park Road dentist. They used the Enlighten Evolution treatment on Lauren which has been getting rave reviews in the press. This bleaching system boasts great results. It works by increasing the teeth’s permeability to oxygen which breaks down stain molecules and can whiten teeth by up to 16 shades. Special moulds were created for Lauren’s teeth which she had to pop in each night containing the whitening gel and then ultra violet light is used painlessly to activate the gel giving a prefect set of pearly whites! “It's a fantastic treatment but at times it felt like I was on my own personal diet to help maintain the whitening of my teeth avoiding things like curry, coke, tea, coffee and red wine – but it's definitely worth it! The fantastic thing about it is that you can easily keep it up by buying the gel every few months which works out very reasonable.” The team at the Smile Boutique believe a smile is a real work of art and offer everything from dental implants to Lumineer Veneers and Invisalign Invisible Braces. They’re holding an open evening at 6pm on May 19 to explain more about this popular treatment which does away with traditional metal braces, places are free, but on a first come basis. Invisalign can treat crooked or overcrowded teeth but because it’s clear, removable and comfortable, it won’t dominate your smile! To reserve your place simply email cheryl@thesmileboutique.co.uk.

SCREENING OF SHARKWATER (PG)
TIME TO GO GREEN! It’s time to go green and get ready to find out how to re-use, recycle and save the planet… while having a little fun! The 20th Peterborough Green Festival takes place from Saturday May 28 – Sunday June 12 with loads of green themed events throughout the city. It’s all organised by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) and most events are free. Each year there’s a theme for the Green Festival and this year PECT is partnering with Travelchoice to encourage everyone to car share, walk, cycle, and use public transport to save money, get fit, and help the environment.
This free screening of Sharkwater – supported by the Peterborough office of international engineering and environmental consultancy Royal Haskoning – debunks the image of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and shows how their vital role in the hierarchy of marine life is threatened by illegal poaching to supply Far East demand for shark-fin soup. The film, which exposes how illegal fishing has seriously depleted shark numbers, has received 38 international awards. In addition to stunning high definition underwater filming, the exciting edge-of-the-seat storyline follows Rob Stewart and conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as they confront shark poachers in Guatemala before being forced to flee for their lives. Film starts 7pm. For free tickets call: 01733 866437 or email: penny.fletcher@pect.org.uk www.sharkwater.com

PERCEPTIVE
ONE TOO MANY MAGNUMS FOR JOSIE Size 24 waitress Josie Barnes was shamed into losing seven stones in weight after gunmen robbing the Harvester where she worked called her a "fat cow". Josie reportedly said – "My confidence was pretty low – I certainly didn't need some b****** to hold a gun to my head and tell me I was a fat I cow". Whilst I take my hat off to Josie for her achievement, am a bit bemused by her logic. To be honest, if some desperate robber was holding a gun to my head, as far as long as he didn't shoot me. I'm concerned he could call me what the hell he liked, just as
TILL OK MAGAZINE SHOOT DO WE PART And speaking of Jordan, she's hit out at rumours that she's set to tie the knot for a third time and marry her Argentinian toyboy, tweeting ‘People keep saying is it true I'm engaged! We are not engaged, we haven't spoke about getting engaged and I don't intend to get engaged.’ Bless her, you'd think that with all her experience on how to play the media that she'd have realised that going out on the town with a blinking great rock on her engagement finger would have led to a few headlines, or maybe it was a complete accident that she was flashing it at the paps. Honestly, how do these journalists get these ideas?

OMG, LMAO, LOL! It's official, northerners are far more sociable than people in the south. Well, it's official according to a recent on-line survey by mydestinationinfo.com. They’re basing their entire conclusion on their findings that 44 per cent of holidaymakers who use a device such as a smart phone, iPad, etc in the North do so to check a social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter. Compare that with just 32 per cent in the south and you have your conlusion that Northerners are more sociable. OK, I know I’m a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to social networking. Facebook scares the hell out of me, I think it’s the idea of all that poking, I’m worried about practicing safe text. And as for Twitter, I’m all in a tizz about how much you’re supposed to share – ‘OMG, toast disaster, have run out of Nutella LOL’ – or does it have to be just the interesting things, and who decides if they’re interesting, and what if I think they’re interesting but no-one else does and why have my palms suddenly gone all sweaty? Sorry, bit of a panic rant there, but I don’t see how sitting alone typing in front of your laptop or ignoring the world around you to play with your iPhone on the bus makes you sociable. Maybe I should take the plunge, get with the programme and get on Facebook but I’m just not sure when I’d have the time to be ‘sociable’ on the internet, maybe because I’m far too busy being sociable having real relationships and real life conversations with real life people and not just getting intimate with my keyboard and my screen.

paparazzi Caught in the act? CITY CENTRE FUN AND GAMES! The ESP Paparazzi Crew hit the city centre to get a taste of the action and of course couldn’t resist a sneaky peek at Yates’s new refurb. Perhaps the fact that Scot Maslen, alias Jack Branning from EastEnders, was there helped tempt the Paparazzi girls inside. Our photographer Mike Harris was there to capture the fun and the place was heaving! Everyone was very excited and it was a noisy but successful night. If you haven’t checked out the changes yet, take a look. A wander over the road to Coco’s bar on Broadway found a birthday party in full swing for local guy ‘Champagne’ Steve. Podium dancers, a bongo player and fire eaters certainly added to the atmosphere and plenty of people were enjoying the intimate surroundings. The cocktails were going down a treat and a good time was being had by all.
TAG YOU’RE IT!
Congratulations to Cheryl Baker, who was tagged in our Facebook Paparazzi and is this month’s winner of a £50 voucher to spend on any look-good treatments at the Sapphire Smooth Clinic in Yaxley. There’ll be another prize up for grabs this month so take a good look at all our Paparazzi pics (there’s often more online) and get tagging on our facebook page. Nobody’s Perfect... but Jessie J is doing pretty well! ESP’s Susan Saunders finds out whether it’s really not about the price tag… A year ago, you may not have heard of Jessie J but after supporting Chris Brown on his European tour, chart success and writing songs for artists including Alicia Keys, she’s now firmly on the map as the UK’s newest chart-topping diva. She’s sold a million singles, 300,000 copies of her debut album and to date, Jessie’s two videos have received a phenomenal 50 million YouTube views. Not everyone would naturally think that a song with the lyrics ‘do it like a brother, do it like a dude’, would achieve the chart success that Jessie J secured with her debut track (chart position number two) but it catapulted her on to the scene. She followed that with Price Tag, which went straight to the top of the UK charts.
wondering what’s going to happen next and genuinely not knowing. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I can’t touch drugs. I can’t even have caffeine. I have to be confident. When I’m in the studio sometimes, I think no, I don’t need a therapist. I just need to write a great song.” On the subject of great songs, her next single, Nobody’s Perfect is set to be a killer track, written and produced by Jessie. Lyrically it shows a more emotional side to Jessie’s songwriting ability while showcasing her vocal diversity. Jessie is also proving she’s a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the pond after her recent highly applauded performance on top US TV show Saturday Night Live. Pretty cool stuff really and a pretty cool person, or so you’d think, however Jessie disagrees – “I am so, like, the uncoolest person ever. My dad’s cooler than me. He was the one playing D Train and Funkadelic in the house. I will not lie.” Her first career ambition was to star in musical theatre and at 11, after auditioning for Whistle DownThe Wind in the West End she landed a prestigious two year residency on the Andrew Lloyd-Webber production. “That was when it all started,” because she thought – “You can get paid for this? Bring it on!” And bring it on, she did. Not one to hold back or take things at a leisurely pace, when Jessie’s first record label went bust, instead of wallowing in self pity, she packed herself off to America, spending three weeks in New York and three in LA to try the trans-Atlantic option.
Jessie has a sound, and a look, that just can’t be ignored, with her iconic Pulp Fiction style Uma Thurman look – a striking ink black, poker straight bob. Talking about her hairstyle, Jessie says – “To be honest, I always think of it as being a bit Mystic Meg. People are always coming up to me on the street and asking me if it’s a wig and I say yeah, you can buy it down Hamley’s!’’ Outspoken and righteous, yes, but also a down to earth and confident girl from Essex, Jessie has done so well to receive such acclaim at the young age of 22. With such confidence, you wouldn’t think this was someone who had a minor stroke three years ago. “I’ve got heart problems,” says Jessie openly. “I’ve looked at the big stuff straight in the eye, had people sitting on the end of a hospital bed

“I landed off the plane in LA, did a showcase at the Viper Rooms and two days later I was sat with LA Reid and there are eight offers on the table. LA (the man not the place!) said to me he couldn’t believe that British labels had passed up on me.” This was just the boost she needed. Boost or none, it’s fair to say Jessie has embraced her music career with both hands and loves making and writing music. “That’s why I started writing music in the first place,” she explains. “Every single song on the album is a story of my life.” Jessie is due to kick off her sell-out UK tour at the end of the month, and is also getting ready to invade the festival circuit this summer with appearances at all the major UK festivals including Glastonbury, V Festival and T in the Park, to name a few. Her brand new single, Nobody’s Perfect is available to buy from May 30.

Indian
ESP’s resident nutritionist continues her virtual trip around the world finding the best in every country’s dishes…
SWAPS
One of the most popular dishes in the UK today is a curry along with all the traditional Indian trimmings! Indian food contains many health promoting herbs and spices but it can also contain ingredients that can encourage us to pile on the pounds (also through some of the styles of cooking). Some of the less attractive additions include cream, excess butter and oils used for deep frying. Taking a fresh look at Indian food you might be surprised to find that it does offer some excellent health benefits. Many traditional dishes are made using vegetarian sources such as lentils, beans and vegetables (us Brits tend to want the meat adding). Typical vegetarian foods are high fibre, rich in nutrients and have zero cholesterol. Also opting for the dishes baked in the tandori ovens can bring all the benefits of the herbs and spices without all those calories. They use a variety of herbs and spices to give the food the taste, flavour and amazing colours, many of them are also extremely good for us for instance: CORIANDER –
TUMERIC –
CUMIN – CARDAMON –
also known as cilantro or Chinese parsley both the leaves and the seeds are used in Indian cooking, for flavouring and decoration. Benefits may include helping to reduce Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), bloating, blood sugar balancing and antibacterial action. (also known as curcumin) – this is a member of the ginger family and is a major ingredient of curry powder, its benefits include aiding digestion and it may help relieve joint pains due to its anti inflammatory action. These small seeds may not only help with digestion they also have antioxidant properties, they’re used in many Indian dishes to bring heaps of flavour. an ancient spice said to be an aphrodisiac! Also a main ingredient in curry powder, it has many healing properties including calming the digestive system.
Of course Indian dishes use high levels of onions and garlic in their dishes which have numerous benefits to us including anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic properties, immune support, helping with hayfever symptoms and much more.
Go for tomato based sauces to replace the creamy ones and ask them to use less salt in the cooking. Indian breads are also highly popular. Roti or chapatti breads can be chosen over the heavier naan breads, you can also ask that they avoid any oils or ghee over the breads too to cut down on artery clogging fats! Rice of course is a main grain in Indian cooking, opt for the steamed basmati over the oiled biryani varieties to cut out those extra calories. Of course the occasional feast at your favourite Indian is a pleasure, but to enjoy this food more frequently it’s better to make the healthier choices! Enjoy, Karen For more information on health and nutrition go to www.karendevine.co.uk

REVIEW
Talbot Hotel New Road, Oundle. Tel: 01832 273621
The Talbot Hotel is a beautiful Grade 1 listed building and has a romantic, cosy atmosphere. That makes it ideal for a meal with your partner but was also just lovely for a get together with a friend and we certainly weren’t disappointed. A selection of warm bread was served to our table on arrival and the staff were very welcoming and made us feel waited on hand and foot! For our starters we had salmon (£6.50) and the Camembert (£5.95) which were both beautifully presented and tasted delicious.
NEW FOOD QUARTER IN SPALDING The new Red Lion Quarter in Spalding, a multi million pound grant funded food and education centre is now open and well worth a look. It’s the largest of its kind in the county and it’s great to see a previously derelict area revived. Apart from selling local produce it also houses a great new eaterie. The training restaurant Sage, operated by Boston College, has received the backing of Jason Atherton, a Michelin star chef. As well as offering up some gorgeous food it’ll also help students and apprentices by enabling them to train in a realistic commercial environment. During the day you can try professionally made, specialist coffees, tea and a selection of lovingly made light bites. Sit down and relax in the cosmopolitan atmosphere and take lunch, all freshly prepared using the best locally sourced ingredients which are served by friendly College staff and students. In the evening Sage transforms itself, so book early to avoid missing the quality fine dining experience that Boston College is renowned for. You may even catch a glimpse of Jason Atherton who pops in, supporting the industry trained staff and students, demonstrating his internationally recognised culinary skills. It all looks fantastic so give it you support – book at Sage on 01775 715888.
We eagerly moved on to our main course and I opted for sirloin steak from the bar menu with chips, mushrooms and tomatoes (£16.50). My friend opted for the rack of lamb with truffle dauphines potatoes, braised chicory, roasted beetroot and rosemary jus (£17.50). Again it was well presented and cooked perfectly – I always eat my steak well done, and it was just nicely cooked and very moist. We couldn’t resist going the whole hog and sampling the desserts so I tried Baileys cream cheesecake which was freshly prepared and the ice cream handmade! The lemon tart also went down equally well – very zesty and fresh, and the presentation was spot on once again. The Talbot Hotel offers a comprehensive menu but if you can’t find anything that takes your fancy there’s also a bar menu available. It’s good to know ingredients are sourced locally where possible, all the food is freshly cooked to order and there are vegetarian options so make sure you give it a try soon. Sadie Stafford

NEW BREED OF PANTHER HITS THE TRACK

After a winter of turmoil Peterborough Panthers are back in track action – and discovering a brand new breed of stars.
FIXTURES Dakota North
The East of England Showground outfit had to completely rebuild their squad as their future hung in the balance.
lack a bit in experience but they more than make up for that with their attitudes and willingness to mix with the supporters.
Along with Elite League champions Coventry, the Panthers were locked in a war of words with the authorities and were only confirmed as 2011 starters a couple of weeks into the new season. But now they’re determined to make up for lost time after bringing in six new faces.
“Kacper reminds me of a time back in the nineties when Jason Crump created such an impact in his first season. Jason’s gone on to win the World Championship three times – some of our supporters are already suggesting Kacper can do the same. That’s a bit too far ahead to predict but the three kids certainly couldn’t have done any better even though it’s very much early days.
Top of the list is three-times World Champion Nicki Pedersen who is captaining the new-look squad. But three youngsters – two in their teens and a third just 20 – are wowing the Alwalton fans. Top of the new hit parade is 18year-old Polish ace Kacper Gomolski who’s in his maiden British campaign. The young racer is a thrill-maker and a showman and was given a standing reception by fans at the opening meeting. He entertained everyone with a display of spectacular wheelie celebrations and, even though his English is limited, has quickly endeared himself to the Panthers’ followers.

Kacper Gomolski
“We all knew that Nicki would settle in straight away but you always have a few doubts with riders who are basically just starting out. On the evidence of our first couple of meetings we have a trio of crowd-pleasers on our hands.” Sundström, who was bought from Rye House during the winter, has already been elevated to Sweden’s senior World Cup squad while Gomolski has been picked by Poland for both the Under 21 World Cup and the Under 19 European Championship.
Swede Linus Sundström, 20, and Australian Dakota North, 19, have also made impressive starts to their Peterborough careers.
Catch them in action at the East of England Showground, Alwalton, Peterborough most Thursdays, some Mondays and Bank Holidays.
Team boss Trevor Swales told ESP – “I can’t remember when we introduced three youngsters who hit it off so quickly. They may

After shooting the doc, the Libyans chase Marty around the Twin Pines shopping mall car park until Marty puts his foot down, the De Lorean hits 88mph, disappears in a flash of light and the Libyans blinded by it crash into a photo stand and flip the VW over. Ha Ha – take that you terrorists! No one who's ever watched the film has ever stopped to think about the impact of seeing two Libyan terrorists humiliated like that, but Gaddafi is the kind of powercrazed dictator that probably watched that film and vowed revenge for his countrymen saying to his scientists – "Get me VW Camper and build ME time machine!" And that's why I've been watching the news coverage of the Nato air strikes very carefully to see if there's any pictures of a burnt out VW camper. I haven't seen one yet, but I'm sure he's got one somewhere... unless… unless Osama Bin Laden's stolen it... Yeah, that would explain why the Americans haven't found him for the last ten years. He's not hiding in some cave between Afghanistan and Pakistan, he's hiding out in 1885 somewhere in the wild west – like Marty and the Doc did in Back To The Future 3. Well good, I hope Buford 'Mad Dog' Tannen's kicked his hairy arse, made him moonwalk like Michael Jackson through a saloon bar by firing bullets at his feet, and then forced him to listen to ZZ Top’s entire back catalogue.
THE COLONEL'S CAMPER VAN-ITY PROJECT It's been impossible over the last month to avoid the news stories surrounding the conflict in Libya. I'm no Jeremy Paxman, but the gist of the problem seems to be Britain and the Nato countries trying to stop Colonel Gaddafi acting like a massive bellend. I've been trying to think why Gaddafi is so adamant about staying in charge of Libya and I think I've got the answer – Back To The Future. Cast your minds back to the film and you'll remember the reason Marty McFly ends up time travelling back to 1955 is in order to escape from Libyan terrorists who are chasing him in a VW camper van! Doc Brown stole plutonium from them that they wanted him to build a nuclear bomb with and instead used it to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity needed to power the Flux Capacitor.

2001 where he was unfortunately voted off before he could work his magic on Anne Robinson. Regular readers may also remember my recurring New Year’s resolution of trying to get on Never Mind The Buzzcocks. (There's always one person on there you've never heard of, so it might as well be me.) In the meantime I'll have to be content that I'm the only ESP writer whose 'laugh' appears in a BBC sitcom. I went to a studio recording of the first series of the hit 'n' miss Only Fools & Horses spin-off Green, Green Grass that starred Boycie & Marlene. Boycie said something and Marlene followed with a punchline and everyone in the audience laughed, but because the recording had gone on so long, and the show wasn't as funny as I’d hoped, I decided it'd be more amusing to laugh at the 'set up lines' to the jokes rather than the lame punchlines.

CRESSET COMEDY CLUB May 27 Cresset Comedy Club presents Paul Pirie who was Scottish Comedian of The Year, his clowning and quick fire gags are comedy gold and his physical mannerisms have a touch of Eric Morecambe. Dan Evans is surreal, original and a master of the one-liner. George Egg presents his variety act for the 21st century with a twist and of course his oversized briefcase. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES Released: May 18 Cast: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane Director: Rob Marshall
Hopes are high for the Pirates franchise as it sails in a different direction – but with Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow still at the helm.
Out are Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, and in are Ian McShane’s villainous Blackbeard and his spikey daughter Angelica, played by Penelope Cruz.
also one of Jack’s old flames – as On Stranger Tides looks to reignite the series after the last trilogy ended with a bit of a whimper.
Geoffrey Rush’s Barbossa does return however (along with Keith Richards’ Captain Teague from At World’s End), as he teams with Jack to search for the Fountain of Youth – with Blackbeard in hot pursuit.
With Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall (Chicago) taking over the reigns from Gore Verbinski, it looks like this ship is in safe hands – and reportedly the early test screenings are extremely encouraging…
To add a twist to this new (expected) Pirates trilogy, Angelica is
WATER FOR ELEPHANTS Released: May 4. Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson There’s some decent buzz for this film – but that’s mainly coming from my Mum and sister. Twi-hards still swooning over Robert Pattinson hope he can finally prevent himself being stereotyped in this romantic drama – from the acclaimed bestselling book – which sees young vet Jacob (Pattinson) join a travelling circus after the death of his parents.
Released: May 30 Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon Director: Matthew Vaughn Talking of new trilogies – and old ones going out with bit of a whimper – X-Men is the latest franchise to get a reboot.

treatment – 1962 to be exact – and looking at the fledgling years of Charles Xavier (McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto (Fassbender). You’ll see the younger incarnations of the likes of Beast and Mystique, along with new characters from the X-Men universe such as Emma Frost (January Jones), Azazel (Jason Flemyng), Havok, Darwin and Kevin Bacon’s kinetic energy absorbing bad guy – Sebastian Shaw. If it’s as good as the first two movies – and with two exciting young actors in the lead roles there’s a good chance – school could be out for summer…
There he falls in love with headline act Marlena (Witherspoon) – much to the chagrin of her jealous husband, played by Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) – as Pattinson aims to prove he’s a Big Top…
THE HANGOVER: PART II Released: May 26. Cast: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis Two years ago, I had to choose between comedies Year One and The Hangover to publicise in this very mag. One was arguably the biggest comedy sleeper-hit of all-time, the other was complete and utter rubbish – and I chose the wrong one. But that is being remedied right here as Cooper, Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha cash-in on the first film’s success as lightning strikes again – this time in Bangkok. Todd Phillips (Due Date) is back in the director’s chair to orchestrate the laddish tomfoolery. Just hope it’s as enjoyable as the first…
CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER Out now
Eustace (Will Poulter) – return to Narnia as they re-team with Ben Barnes’ Prince Caspian. This time they sail to the edge of the world aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader to reunite the seven swords of the Lords – and save a group of kidnapped Narnians in the process.
Let’s hope Twentieth Century Fox get a chance to complete the epic adventures of CS Lewis after saving the series with another notable entry.
Liam Neeson again voices charismatic lion Aslan, with Simon Pegg reprising his role as valiant mouse Reepicheep, as this proves to be another competent family entry – no better, no worse, than the first two.
The youngest Pevensie children – Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley), along with their initially annoying cousin

NINTENDO 3DS & LAUNCH GAMES REVIEWED
PILOTWINGS RESORT #####
While Nintendo’s 3DS console hasn’t been a stranger to controversy since its recent launch – there’s no denying it’s a revolutionary piece of handheld kit. Yes, some people have reportedly struggled with its artificial three dimensional technology – which doesn’t require 3D glasses – but for the most part the ‘wow’ factor benefits far outweigh the negatives, as long as you don’t overdo it. The new console doesn’t make massive steps beyond Nintendo’s previous incarnation of their dual-screen handheld, the DSi, but with two snazzy colours – aqua blue and cosmos black – better graphics with a higher resolution screen, new ‘disc’ controller, 3D slider function (to control strength of the visuals) and upgraded user interface, this is Nintendo’s best handheld yet.

CRYSIS 2 (360/PS3/PC) Out now With Cry Engine 3 technology this is the best-looking shooter ever seen on a next-gen console – maybe even the best-looking game ever. And fortunately it has gameplay and ingenuity to boot, as you look to save New York as the latest military weapon – boasting great firepower, and a Nanosuit with impressive cloaking stealth and armour modes.
SHIFT 2: UNLEASHED (PS3/360/PC) Out now Racing fans have been spoilt for choice in the recent months – but is the market in danger of being over-saturated?
It’s hampered by its PC origins with some tedious save points, but with a decent multiplayer mode and lengthy campaign who needs a drama when you can have Crysis?
This will leave competent titles like Shift 2 struggling to fight its way through the crowd as it comes up short compared to more varied titles like Need For Speed’s other franchise Hot Pursuit. Unpredictable car-handling and overly-aggressive computer AI slightly hamper what is still a solid sequel for seasoned race fans.

WWE: ALL STARS (360/PS3/PC) Out now
TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR 12: THE MASTERS (360/PS3/WII) Out now
If you imagine how a WWE wrestling game would look in the arcade now – then this is it. This is the over-the-top cousin to Smackdown vs Raw’s more simulation based-play, as legends from Ultimate Warrior to Mr Perfect, and superstars from John Cena to Jack Swagger do exaggerated battles with bone-crushing finishers – and boy is it fun. With Path Of Champions and Fantasy Warfare modes it has more longevity than you’d think, and with more accessibility for all ages – ‘it’s all about the Game’.
#####
It may be only nine months since the last release – but the addition of ‘glorious’ Augusta to the franchise for the recent Masters doesn’t disappoint. The introduction of America’s most-iconic course and a few extra perks such as Road to the Masters and Masters Moments, hones what is the best golfing package out there. It could seem like more of the same for hardcore Tiger fans, but the lure of Augusta makes this worth getting your teeth into.
#####
TOP SPIN 4 (PS3/360/WII) Out now Talking of the best at what it does – there’s no better tennis sim than this. Pound-for-pound this is the complete experience with consistent core mechanics, coupled with an impressive roster of all the major stars – obviously including Andy Murray – that makes this a joy to play. It sadly still has crowd atmosphere problems, and isn’t much of an upgrade from the previous version, but this is undoubtedly the Rafael Nadal of tennis sims and is still absolutely Ace.
#####
LEGO STAR WARS III: THE CLONE WARS (360/PS3/WII/DS/3DS/PSP/PC) Out now Just when you thought Lego games had been done to death, another Star Wars game hits the market – and the extra tinkering still makes it fun and engaging fare. Based around the Clone Wars series this has more strategy and environmental puzzles to make you want to use the force one more time – despite ‘simplicity’ and ‘repetitiveness’ being prominent buzz words. But it still makes great use of the license – and is the best-looking Lego game ever.

CLUBLAND WE’RE GOING TO IBIZA… at Flares, Reflex and Edwards Who else has been sunbathing in the back garden wishing they were in Ibiza? OK, so Peterborough may not have Ibiza’s climate, but at least we now have the music. This May we’ve been blessed with loads of long weekends and Edwards, Flares and Reflex on Broadway want to make sure your summer starts with a bang on the last bank holiday in May. Transport yourself to Peter-biza (sorry, the best I could come up with) and join them on May 27 to start the bank holiday in style with their Ibiza party night down in Edwards. Consisiting of Bassman, Loki, Shaydee, Nutcracka and DJ Sly, SDC have been together for a very long time indeed, and still manage to keep their sound fresh.
PARTY TIME @ CENTRAL Get ready to party hard this May as Central has got two great nights in store. May 27 brings the UV Popcorn Party, it’s said to be the tastiest party of the year, with

Tuesday’s are even better with drinks from just £1 from 9pm ‘til 2am with free entry all night! Visit www.halopeterborough.co.uk for more info.
During the same weekend, Flares and Reflex are also bringing the holiday to us with... wait for it... a Baywatch theme! Once you’ve finished watching the Hoff in Britain's Got Talent, head out and celebrate the show we wish he was still making. There might even be a few orange bikinis and swimming trunks on show if we’re lucky. And remember, if it’s your birthday get signed up online for a free party area, so you’ve got somewhere to rest when your heels hurt, or you’ve been carrying that life board around for too long! Mikey Clarke
THE DYNAMICS OF DUB Dub Dynamics and Submerge have got a big night lined up this month, Orien of Dub Police will be calling into Club Dissident on May 13. He’s been DJing dubstep for about seven years, so he’s no newcomer to the scene and knows how to get the crowd moving. If you’re still not sure, check out his show on www.filth.fm every Thursday from 8-10pm. Residents on the night include Trampa, Obsean, 1-Shot, Dessa, Prospec and Herbz. Entry is £5 before midnight.
JELLY ROLL @ THE TAP If you like the finest in 50s and 60s rhythm and blues, soul, vintage ska and reggae all on vinyl 45s try the Jelly Roll at the Tap Room at the Brewery Tap. DJ Julian Roberts and his guys run the Jelly Roll nights and Bounce To The Ounce alternate months, usually the first Saturday of the month. If you like vintage dance floor tunes you can try out the next Jelly Roll on Saturday May 7.
Peterborough Arts Cinema There’s a great line-up of films showing at the John Clare Theatre this month, kicking off with The Girl Who Played With Fire. Follow the story of a couple of magazine researchers who are found dead whilst working on a sex-trafficking story. The finger gets pointed at Investigator Mikael’s old ally Lisbeth – the dragon tattooed badass babe who’s clearly been set up. It’s on May 5 at 7.30pm. Next on the screen is Another Year – which follows the lives of happily married couple Tom and Gerri played by Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen. Join them as they live their fulfilled life through the four seasons of the year, pottering about in their allotment and looking forward to the thought of their imminent retirement. Their perfect life doesn’t seem so perfect when their thoughts turn to their grown up, unmarried son! Catch this one on May 12 at 7.30pm. Cannes Palme D’Or winner, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, is another film hitting the screen on May 26. Uncle Boonmee is a terminally ill middle aged man with acute kidney failure, who’s returned to the forests of north-eastern Thailand to settle his affairs. It’ll be on the screen at 7.30pm. The award-winning The King’s Speech starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush will be shown at the beginning of June – this hit movie follows George VI’s struggle to cure his stammer. It’s described as a witty and elegant new perspective on the heart of the Windsors and of pre-war Britain. It’s on the screen on June 2 at 7.30pm. For more information on films at the John Clare Theatre on Broadway visit www.peterboroughartscinema.co.uk.
SCOTT MASLEN You can’t seem to keep the celebs away these days so when EastEnder Scott Maslen left E20 and headed for PE1, ESP’s Mikey Clarke was at Yates’s to show him some Peterborough hospitality… If I had £300,000 to spend, I could buy three of the world’s most expensive TVs (plated in white gold and studded with 160 diamonds). It could also buy me a couple of cruise trips around the world in a high-end room, and as of today at least, it might even buy me a couple of hundred miles worth of petrol. Luckily, Yates’s on Broadway have made better use of £300,000, and spent it on a fab new look for the bar! Yates went all out at their launch party recently, and even had a celebrity attending the event. EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing star Scott Maslen (aka Jack Branning) had turned up to check out the bar, whilst posing for photos and signing autographs. One clubber, Michelle White from Hampton, described his appearance as a nice treat for the city. She screamed – “The atmosphere in Yates is incredible but I’m most looking forward to seeing the gorgeous Scott!”
Photos: Mike Harris
I managed to push past the 600 screaming fans to catch a few moments with the man himself. He exclusively told me – “This is a nice change for me. I don’t go clubbing very often these days, but when I am out with the lads this is the kind
54

of venue I like to visit. I got a great vibe the moment I walked into Yates’s. They’ve got the music just right as well as the lighting, and I can’t be the only person that thinks so because the place is packed.” So we know he can shake some moves from his time on Strictly but what music is Scott into on a night out? “I never thought it would happen, but I’ve started listening to the same kind of music my mum used to listen to,” he confessed whilst looking slightly embarrassed. “You can’t beat the classic cheesy songs. I’m talking about artists like the Bee Gees.” Unfortunately though, you’re unlikely to see him dancing to Night Fever any time soon. “I won’t be dancing for a while,” Scott revealed when asked if he’d ever show us any moves he learnt whilst on Strictly. “Practice was so demanding and time consuming whilst making that show so I decided not to dance once it was over. Don’t get me wrong though, I loved doing Strictly and it’s great to now get recognised by people who don’t watch EastEnders. People used to talk to me all the time about the mistakes I made during the live EastEnders episode, so it’s nice to have people talk about the dancing instead.” So what does the future hold for Scott? “As you can imagine, EastEnders is quite a gruelling schedule so during the next couple of years, other than doing that show, I will be making sure I also see a lot more of my family. It would be no surprise to my friends that I’ll also find the time to do a bit of fishing. In fact, I know of quite a lot of decent lakes around Peterborough, so you may end up seeing me again sometime soon!” And at that point it was time for him to see his many fans queuing to meet him which included a certain Face of ESP, Miss Lauren Hughes, who also had a huge grin on her face as she sidled up to him! “It was great to meet Scott,” beamed Lauren. “He’s such a genuine guy and really easy to talk to.” To find out more about the gorgeous Scott Maslen (in Michelle’s words remember) then follow him on Twitter – @RealScottMaslen. One Step Behind
It’s May so by now we are in full festy mode… and I love it! I saw a tee-shirt the other day that said – ‘better to be in a damp field than a dry office’ – how very true, not that this summer is going to be wet… Anyway if it is slightly moist we have the new VW camper Jezebel to keep dry in. She is so called because she came from The Church Of God in Isleworth, London. So from ferrying Oasish devout folk around as a minibus we have converted her into a camper van party bus, Jezebel has come to the dark side! So where will we be doing this partying then? Well I touched on Glastonbudget last month and with a full line-up announcement it gets better. What about this for a Friday nights entertainment? Tributes to Green Day, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rage Against The Machine and The Prodigy… come on it doesn’t get any better than that does it? Not an X Factor winner or a gangster R ‘n’ B dirge in sight. Saturday is great as well with AC/DC, The Jam, Artic Monkeys, Oasis, Madness and Queen. Then Sunday it’s Tina Turner, The Killers, Foo Fighters, Kings Of Leon and Guns n Roses… I mean where the hell would you have the chance to get that line-up? Nowhere! Yeah they are all tributes but when you’ve had a few shandies and you’re in front of a huge stage with a great light show and sound system, you don’t care… it doesn’t matter. You know all the songs, you sing your head off, you have a right old laugh and you go back to your tent a happy bunny. The good thing about Glastonbudget is that if you’ve had an earful of stuff you know there are stages with loads of unsigned up-and-coming bands as well. Although it is marketed as a tribute band festival, dozens of non-tribute bands play all weekend so if you are of high musical moral stature and you want to

‘keep it real’ you can. After last month’s mention I’ve had about 20 messages from boro folk who are up for it, let’s make it a right old weekend, see you there May 27–29! www.glastonbudget.net Michael, my contact at Bearded Theory, has been on to me to say the tickets are flying so if you were thinking of it, do it and sooner rather than later. So if you fancy a bit of Athlete, Alabama 3, The Waterboys, The Beat, Zion Train, FEROCIOUS DOG (can you tell I like them) The Beat and loads more including sodding Wagner… all for a measly £70 get on line now, it’s another great festival on May 13–15. www.beardedtheory.co.uk Early shout out for my old mates Ian Gray, Trev Hart and Colin Harrison at The Plough and the Soul Crew. They’re putting together a Soul Weekender at The Plough in Farcet Fen on June 17–19. The Motor City Vipers featuring the larger than life ex ESP man Andy Whittaker play Saturday night backed up by DJs John Bradley and Skip Stuart to name a couple. Friday night is classic soul and northern with the likes of Ian Gray (taught him all I know about Stax ) Tony Dellar and Ady Bull. Sunday is Lazy Sunday with jazz funk and modern grooves with Steve Allen, Malc James and Steve Jason. All in all, there’s a bit of genre for everyone and, what a great idea for a weekend. You can buy day tickets or weekend tickets, which offer great value at £15 or £20 on the gate and camping is only a fiver per person. Now let me put that in perspective… It’s cheaper for me to go there, pay my £20 and camp for the weekend than it is to get a taxi to The Wortley and get a cab home! These guys deserve your support so get buying those tickets and get buying them early. It stops Colin flapping! www.festivalofsoul.co.uk for more info. Finally back to Jezebel, big shout goes out to my maniac friend Wayne who sorted out a leaky diesel pump last month, mate you are a star! I have a feeling this will be the start of another 10 year affair for you buddy!

POWERSURGE AIM FOR THE O2
CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION ARE NO FOOLS
I saw a great performance by local guys Children Of The Revolution a couple of weeks back and was very impressed with the versatility of the band. The way they span the different generations of rock music from The Kinks to The Killers and from AC/DC to Green Day proves they can turn out great tunes. Chatting to lead singer Rob Bull after the gig, I asked him about the impressive lead guitarist joining Rob and drummer Dave Smith. “He’s my brother Kevin,” was Rob’s reply, “he joined us last year.” Ignoring the fact that this comment sounds like the title of an Undertones song, I was keen to discover how they pick their repertoire from over 40 years of music at their tender age. Rob explained – “We hear a song maybe on the TV ads and, irrespective of era, if it’s something that we think people will enjoy and it’ll be good for us, we’ll put it in. Usually they work, like Elvis Presley’s Burning Love, but sometimes we drop them after a couple of gigs because they don’t fit.” Every time I’ve seen Children Of The Revolution they’ve been a three piece but they do have a fourth member, Tom Clarke, on bass which they reckon brings an extra dimension to their performance. In addition to pub and club appearances, the band play a lot of weddings and have gained quite a reputation in that area. They obviously tone it down a bit and do a couple of romantic and acoustic songs, but even at a wedding they’ve been asked to play the Buzzcocks’ classic Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t Have Fallen In Love With)? Children Of The Revolution haven’t got many bookings in May – because Rob is getting married – and he tells me that wife-to-be, Hannah has wisely asked that all musicians attending as guests enjoy the day as just that and not perform, particularly Rob! So they’ve booked the Nuggets for the reception – good choice, but I doubt the whole day will go by without some guest appearances! Good luck on your special day to Rob and Hannah… and to any future Children Of The Revolution!
Congratulations to Bourne-based band Powersurge who’ve fought their way through to the area finals of Live And Unsigned. Thousands of bands from all around the UK entered this prestigious competition and Powersurge are now waiting for the final hurdle to battle it out for the chance to play the Live And Unsigned Festival at the 02 Arena in London! The overall winner of the competition will be offered a recording and management contract with an investment of up to £50,000. The winners will be awarded the title of the UK’s Best Unsigned Act in front of a capacity crowd on the main stage of the festival. The progress of Powersurge to this stage of the competition is all the more impressive because the band – AJ, Will, Ben, James and Josh – are only aged between 12 and 13 years-old and are competing against acts that are much older. They met at Westfield Primary School in Bourne and have been together a couple of years. The band plays a mix of rock/punk covers, together with some original material which is usually a collaboration between the members. They’ve played Bourne Festival and Barnsdale, and Peterborough Festival goers will remember them on the main stage in Central Park. Having got a feel for a big stage they want to go bigger with the O2 Arena. They won through the heats held in Bedford and return there for the area final on Saturday May 7. You can get tickets and support this promising new band by emailing beaviskeys@aol.com. I wish them luck and hope that they win through to the O2. What a night that’ll be! You can be sure ESP will keep you up to date with their progress. But whatever the result, I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about Powersurge in the future.
THE SUPERCALAS SUPER TALENT
The Supercalas are a Stamford-formed five-piece band – a sort of super group of local talent! The band’s made up of songwriter Nick Lander on vocals/guitar, Richard Gombault on lead guitar (formerly of Midget), Craig Sclare on Drums (Sellout/Blackout), Conrad Stubbs on bass (Sellout/ Blackout) and the amazing talents of Cheryl Lee on vocals, guitar and keyboard. That’s quite a line-up and they describe themselves as providing ‘a set of punchy rockety pop songs’. They’ll be playing songs from their first album – Life in a Middle England Town as well as new tracks from their forthcoming album. Their stage performance is powerful yet melodically catchy – you'll be humming it for weeks! Catch them on Thursday May 5 at Mama Lizs Voodoo Lounge, Stamford with support by We Sell Tigers. www.thesupercalas.co.uk www.myspace.com/thesupercalas
FAB FOUR GIZZ
Gizz Butt tells me he’s put a Beatles tribute band together with some quality names from the local scene which sounds great. Gizz Butt’s Blue Beatles is Fozzy Dixon, James Cluer and Simon Martin and they play sets of classic Beatles and blues with a little help from friends John Moseley, Ray Stockton and Jack Doherty. You can catch them at Charters on May 28 from 9 – 2am when they’ll also play a set from his other band – Gizz Butt’s Red, Black and Blues featuring some searing blues tunes in the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan , Freddie King , Frank Marino and Joe Bonomassa. I’ll have more on Gizz’s latest incarnation soon – he’s certainly a man of many talents!
ERASURE HIT THE FOREST
It’s getting near to the innovative tour by Erasure who’ve confirmed a string of dates throughout June for their Total Pop! concerts. Peterborough lad Andy Bell and Vince Clarke play their hits on stage as part of Forestry Commission Live Music, where they’ll perform in spectacular woodland locations across the country. The Total Pop! tour will coincide with the release of Erasure's brand new album, planned for release this summer and will see Sophie Ellis-Bextor as the support act. For details of where you can see Andy and Vince go to www.forestry.gov.uk/music

TRIBUTES TO THE BEST @ THE KEY
Imagine seeing performances by The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and Pink Floyd all in the same month. Well you can’t BUT – the Key Theatre is staging a sort of May mini music month which will enable you to see some of the UK’s top tribute bands who’ve impressed Peterborough audiences in previous visits to the city. I wondered whether this was a new venture for the Key to bring them all in during the same month but Key Theatre Director Michael Cross assures me it was a practical decision to have the rigging erected and then leave it for all the concerts.
Lloyd Watson & His Band • Real ales • Food freshly cooked local produce • Restaurant Mon – Sat, 11.30am-1.45pm, Tue – Fri, 5.30pm8.45pm, Sat – 6pm-8.45pm, Sun – 12-2pm • Booking advisable • Check out Gig Guide for listings • Beer garden • Families welcome • Open every day from 11.30am
Ye Olde Dun Cow Barrier Bank, Cowbit, Spalding, PE12 6AL Tel: 01406 380543
“Logistically it made total sense to do the work just once, and take advantage of bringing such a great array of talented bands to Peterborough,” Michael told me. He added – “Some of them have played at the Key before and relish the chance to return to the intimate atmosphere of the theatre.” Additionally the run includes a night of Neil Diamond music – The Jazz Singer. The dates are: May 7 May 20 May 26 May 27 May 28
Talon Letz Zep The Jazz Singer Limehouse Lizzie Think Floyd
I’ve seen some of these bands and they are not lookalike tribute acts. If you want to see Messrs Plant, Gilmour or Lynott, then look at some photos! But, if you’re a fan of the classic rock that the original bands performed then you’ll be amazed at the high quality musicianship on the stage of the Key Theatre this month. Tickets from the Key Theatre box office on: 01733 201239.
THE RABBITS LIVE!
The festival season is almost upon us and locally that means a chance to chill out in some (hopefully) good weather this year, sample a few beers and watch some great music. One of the first local beer festivals is on May 13 at the Prince of Wales Feathers in Castor, which has tempted The Dead Rabbits out of hibernation! This will mark their first live gig of the year. The reason for the lack of previous live performances is purely due to laziness, they assure me.
Whatever the reason, it’s good to see them back at the Prince of Wales Feathers Beer Festival which runs from May 12–16. More details on www.princeofwalesfeathers.co.uk
• Open log fire. • Lunchtime snack menu available. • Live entertainment, see ESP Gig Guide. • We currently serve three Real Ales – increasing by popular demand. • Fresh Coffee and Cakes

FUN ON TAP
We like some good news and we like a party so news that the function room at the Brewery Tap is now available FREE of charge cheered us up no end. We’ve used the Tap Room ourselves for a few ESP parties and it’s a great little venue in the heart of the city with its own bar. We’re not the only ones though, the room’s regularly used for a range of private parties, corporate meetings and social events. Plus several groups hold some great nights in there that you’ve probably already enjoyed. When the main Brewery Tap has other events on, or is just simply that bit too big, the Tap Room’s proved ideal. DJ Julian Roberts and his guys run the Jelly Roll nights and Bounce To The Ounce alternate months, usually the first Saturday of the month. If you like vintage dance floor tunes you can try out the next Jelly Roll on Saturday May 7. Julz says – “The Jelly Roll is a unique club in the Cambridgeshire region, playing the finest in 50s and 60s rhythm and blues, soul, vintage ska and reggae all on vinyl 45s. The Tap Room room ensures that you socialise and with its own bar, quality sound system and air conditioning this room is very special.” Drama On Tap, Peterborough's only open mic drama night – yes really – is held bi-monthly and is proving really popular. It’s free and if you want to see some great drama in action the next event is on Wednesday May 4. It’s proving a popular spot for a range of arts nights as well as corporate functions. Poetry fans head there each month for Speakeasy which is part of a growing local poetry scene in the city – see there’s more going on than you think! They’re meeting on Wednesday May 25 but then take a break over the summer before returning again in September. Apart from the regular nights in the Tap Room if you fancy throwing a bash of your own it’s ideal. Eileen Le Voi from safelocaltrades.com threw a surprise 40th for her partner and told ESP it was perfect – “I could not have picked a better venue as the entire evening went to plan, the food was great and everyone truly had a wonderful time. My sincere thanks to Jim, the manager, for all his valuable assistance in ensuring the Tap Room was laid out to my requirements, for his advice on how we could orchestrate the initial surprise when we arrived and for the vital part he played in that (even though he was extremely busy behind the bar when we arrived!)”
So if you fancy throwing a bit of a bash or setting up a new night and need a city centre venue the Tap Room’s free to use, has it’s own bar stocking all those fabulous Oakham Ales and of course there’s food on tap with their great Thai meals. They’ve recently refreshed the menu with some gorgeous new dishes – we know, we’ve tried them!
To book just call: 01733 358500.

You can also enjoy their range of real ales, and as the sun starts to shine this summer you can relax in the beer garden. The chef cooks some delicious food in the restaurant, all sourced locally and prepared from scratch, you can’t get fresher than that! FROM THE PLOUGHMAN TO THE DRAGON
Local brother’s Andy and Stuart were very pleased to tell us that they’ve now taken over The Dragon pub in Werrington, as well as running their Pub Of The Year – The Ploughman. They’re holding a fantastic re-launch night on May 7 – where there’ll be some great celebrations and local band Hooker will be performing – this was previously booked at The Ploughman but has now been moved to The Dragon – so make sure you don’t head over to the wrong venue! The future’s looking bright for both Werrington pubs now – and we wish all the best to Andy and Stuart!
BUSY MONTH @ THE PLOUGH
It’s all happening at The Plough at Farcet Fen this May as there are several events on the go. Kicking off on May 1 is the Fenland drag lure meeting. The day starts at 10.30am, first dogs in slips, and entry per dog is £25 and £5 per person. On May 7 it’s the Big Bang Bash – an evening of fireworks by the Firework Guild. Described as an evening similar to bonfire night, but a lot warmer! Admission’s free, and drinks and food is available too, open from 7pm ‘til late. Finally the NABD Bike Rally is on May 13 – 14 where everyone’s welcome. For more information call 01775 711874, or to book, visit www.anysparechangerally.tk.
