FANCY A GAME OF ‘TOUCH’ RUGBY? Peterborough Rugby Club’s appealing for teams to take part in a social, fun, ‘touch rugby’competition… including girls. At the event there’ll be a section for proper rugby players but there’s a section for fun teams – people who maybe haven’t played any rugby before but fancy a bit of a laugh. Because a ‘touch’ takes the place of a tackle, there’s no chance of anyone getting hurt; and it’s all followed up by a beer and a BBQ! It’s on Fridays from 7pm to 8.30pm on June 6, June 13, June 20, June 27, July 4 and July 11 and entry’s £65 per team (squad of up to 12 to have six players on the pitch at any time) so that’s less than £1 per person per week.

City centre hair salon Michael John is celebrating its 40th year in business with some fresh ideas. They never stand still and over the past few months they’ve been giving further training to all their staff, especially their latest crop of new talent and have launched a dynamic new artistic team called the Michael John Hair Academy Crew. It’s headed by Amber Bird and Amy Verrall – Amber’s fresh from the TIGI Inspirational Youth Team also has a Level 3 NVQ and is a qualified assessor, whilst Amy was National Junior Champion and is currently training for the Master Colour Diploma and is a qualified assessor. The new fashion focussed team will be using social media and will have its own free APP with loads of special rewards, so sign up now on www.michaeljohnhairartwork/ mjhacrew

MORECOMBE BRINGS SUNSHINE TO THE KEY This unmissable brand new production of Tim Whitnall’s Olivier Awardwinning play, stars the Olivier-nominated Bob Golding as comedy icon Eric Morecambe. Directed by Paul Hendy, the show is a moving, often hilarious tale about one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers: from humble beginnings in Music Hall to 28 million viewers on Christmas Day, it’s the heartwarming, tear-jerking, laughter-inducing story of the man who brought us the sunshine. Catch it at the Key Theatre on Monday May 12 and Tuesday May 13. Tickets are £16.50 (£14 concessions) on 01733 207239.

LOVE (HURTS) ACTUALLY Whether you love or hate the Richard Curtis rom-com Love Actually, award winning poet Matt Panesh will have you laughing in recognition at the reality of how true love does not ‘actually’ run smoothly in his new show ‘LOVEhurtsACTUALLY’ that comes to the South Holland Centre on Friday May 9.

In this latest show, Europe’s most successful Elvis Presley tribute artist – Lee Memphis King, presents the ultimate tribute to The King – celebrating the entire career of the musical legend. This spectacular show begins with an authentic recreation of the 1950’s rock’n’roll years, progressing through the movie years to Elvis’s return to performing in his ’68 comeback special. The second half culminates in a rousing expo of Elvis’s years performing in Vegas. Lee brings the majesty of the voice and the electrifying power of Elvis’s performance back to life. Accompanied throughout by his world class band and backing singers that breath the life into the music of a legend. The show also features large screen projection, making it the biggest Elvis show to tour UK theatres.

After an interval drink Matt offers you a bonus half of his irreverent stand up performance poetry. A fast, furious and fun night in a cabaret setting upstairs.

Catch ‘The King’ in action at the Cresset on Friday May 30. Tickets are £21.50 on 01733 265705.

Tickets are £9 (£7.50 concessions) and are available from the theatre box office on 01775 Alex Jones 764777 or by visiting www.monkeypoet.co.uk.

Described as wickedly funny, he’s billing this one-man play as the ‘Unofficial Sequel’ to the hit film which featured Hugh Grant.

PETERBOROUGH ARTS CINEMA Spring is upon us and award season is behind us. So as directors, actors and critics get ready for another season of new cinema, every Thursday the John Clare Cinema will be giving you the opportunity to catch some of the best films from seasons past. First up on Thursday May 1 is Le Week-End. Directed by Roger Michell, this is a tale of a long-married couple attempting to get away from it all in Paris, but instead finding the broiling tensions in their relationship coming to an unexpected head. This very likable melancholy rom(non?)-com boasts splendid turns from Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan, between whom the sparks (hostile, passionate, dependent) fly with conviction and grace. Next on Thursday May 8 and continuing the French theme is Jeune et Jolie (18). François Ozon's fervent and well-acted drama about a 17-year-old girl exploring her sexuality by becoming a high-class call girl is very watchable … and entirely ridiculous. It has a stylish gloss and sexy glow, no doubt about it. Only French cinema could get away with it. After a week’s break the films return on Thursday May 22 with The Selfish Giant. Conner Chapman and Shaun Thomas play Arbor and Swifty, two lads who live in the tough estates of Bradford. Arbor is small, aggressive and unhappy. His mate Swifty is slower, gentler and a natural target for bullies. After Arbor gets in a fight defending Swifty in, the boys are excluded and turn to roaming around town scavenging and nicking metal objects to sell for scrap. They take their swag to a dodgy dealer, inappropriately nicknamed Kitten! Finally on Thursday May 29 it’s the critically acclaimed Nebraska. Directed by Alexander Payne, he gets Bruce Dern to rein in the familiar tropes, working with the echoes of previous roles to create a character more afflicted by melancholia than madness. He plays Woody Grant, a crotchety, senile old drunk mired in Billings, Montana, who becomes convinced that he’ll be the recipient of a $1m sweepstake prize if he can just get himself to Lincoln, Nebraska. Alex Jones

JUST LIKE THAT! THE TOMMY COOPER SHOW Tommy Cooper was a true comic genius. His impeccable timing, memorable routines, love of slapstick and groanworthy gags made him an international name. To commemorate 30 years since his death, this special tribute show is a compilation of rarely seen material from his early cabaret days and the very best of his gags and tricks from his later extensive repertoire. Complete with live music accompaniment, this promises to be a colourful, laugh-a-minute show! Catch it at Stamford Corn Exchange on Friday May 23. Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions) on 01780 766455.

MOTOWN BEACH PARTY SPECIAL Great Nights present their second event – ‘The Magic of Soul, Motown and More 60's 70's 80's Disco’ – this time with the theme of a Hawaiian Beach Party with Hawaiian fancy dress optional. Featuring top local DJ’s Ian Gray, John Bradley and Andy Coulson it’s being held at the Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey on Saturday May 31 from 7.30 pm till late. Basket food will be available throughout the evening and tickets are £6 in advance or £8 on the door and are available form The Ivy leaf Club, Larry’s Heel Bar, or from Andy on 07941 629660.

ESP DANCE CREW STEP TO THE BEAT WITH RACE FOR LIFE’S CANCER SLAM The ESP Dance Crew are set to show cancer who’s boss and teach Peterborough ladies how to do the ‘Cancer Slam’ at the launch of this year’s Race for Life. They’ll be performing at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre on Sunday May 11 between 11am and 2pm as they help recruit ladies for the two local events – Sunday June 1 at Burghley House in Stamford and Tuesday July 8 at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough.

The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw also culminates that weekend – a nationwide fundraising drive that sees Slimming World members across the UK donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, Slimming World’s Charity Partner for 2014. Each bag of clothes could raise up to £25.

Supported by Tesco, and the local Slimming World group, the ESP Dance Crew are swapping their usual dance routines for a defiant dance known as Race for Life’s ‘Cancer Slam’ as ESP Magazine gets behind this great fundraising event.

This will be taking place between May 5 - 12, with the finale finishing off at the Serpentine Green Shopping Centre on Sunday May 11 with the Race for Life launch event.

Capturing the energy and spirit of the women-only event series, the ‘Cancer Slam’ is designed to bring their indescribable power and emotion to life. It also embodies the passion and determination behind Race for Life’s rallying cry ‘Cancer, we’re coming to get you’. Organisers hope the ‘Cancer Slam’ will stop Peterborough shoppers in their tracks and motivate local mums, grans, daughters, sisters and friends to sign-up for Race for Life on the spot.

8

www.espmag.co.uk

The ESP Dance Crew will also be performing the Cancer Slam as part of the rousing warm-up at the local Race for Life events. A video showing how to do the dance steps is available online so you can have a practice. ESP’s dance instructor Nicole, said – “We’re so excited about taking part in the ‘Cancer Slam’ and we’ve had a great time learning the routine. We hope we can inspire women to join in the fun and enter their local Race for Life event. “Cancer touches so many of us,

including members of our group. That’s why we want to do everything we can to motivate women to power up the pink and show cancer who’s boss.” Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events which raises millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner. So women of all shapes and sizes are needed to join together and give cancer the boot by entering. Julie Braithwaite Cancer Research UK’s Peterborough Event Manager says –“Race for Life is noncompetitive. It doesn’t matter how fit or fast you are. Taking part is about joining together against a disease that affects all of us. You can walk, run or dance, so we urge local ladies to take the first step by signing up today.” To enter Race for Life’s events in the East, and learn how to do the ‘Cancer Slam’, visit www.raceforlife.org or call 0845 600 6050.

KNOBWORTH FESTIVAL @ YARWELL On Saturday May 31 and Sunday June 1 the beer garden at the Angel Inn Yarwell will play host to the 3rd annual Knobworth Festival – a music, real ale and cider festival devised to raise awareness of testicular and prostate cancer – the latter of which has now overtaken lung cancer to become the most common cancer in men. Each year in the UK alone, around 37,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 10,000 of these will die from the condition. Playing on the name of the famous Knebworth Festival, Knobworth is a fun play on words that encapsulates both the synergy of a music festival and also a lighthearted reference to the charity’s cause. Nick and Diane Lander, who’ve owned and run the Angel Inn for the last ten years, hope that the intended pun attracts attention for this serious and worthy cause and are pleased that Prostate Cancer UK (charity No: 1005541) are in support of the event. The pub’s also hoping to get a local GP to be in attendance at the event to offer advice on the subject. The weekend will see an abundance of real ales and real ciders, some great live music over the two days and will be MC’ed by Peterborough FM’s Rurality Show DJ Jim Boulton. Entrance is free – check www.espmag.co.uk for band details.

This is an amazing chance to view the largest collection of the poet’s works shown in one place since 1893, usually only seen by academics! Explore the fascinating story of how an ill-educated peasant from Helpston, on the outskirts of Peterborough, could go on to become one of the most celebrated literary figures of the early 19th century.

The exhibition includes original manuscripts that demonstrate his literary versatility and also his descent into madness that led to him being confined in Northampton Lunatic Asylum for the later period of his life. View the committal notice, in which John Clare was described as suffering from years of ‘poetical prosing’, and also his very last poem ‘Birds’ Nests.’

Time to find your

Listen up – if you sing in the bath or in the car on the way to work, maybe it’s time you took your love of music to a new level and joined one of Peterborough’s choirs… It’s been fantastic to see the successful development of not one, but three choirs in Peterborough which have given dozens of people of all ages the chance to get involved and put on some great performances. The Peterborough Male Voice Choir was originally established way back in 1935 but Will Prideaux took over as musical director in 2010 and Peterborough Voices, the ladies choir, and Peterborough Youth Choir were set up the following year

Will Prideaux

If ‘choir’ conjures up uncool images don’t be fooled – they belt out some well known tunes and have staged some fantastic live concerts at venues across the city. It’s given so many people the chance to literally find their voice and given us some great entertainment.

The driving force behind it is international award-winning choral conductor Will Prideaux who’s taken them to compete around the country as well as having some of them perform on national radio. Will studied voice and choral conducting at the Royal Academy of Music and works across the country as a consultant and guest conductor specialising in developing choirs. So is it really true anyone can sing? “Yes!” says Will. “Singing is a skill like anything else. Pitching, breath control, tone; all these things can be developed. Singing is such a life affirming activity, and to come together for such a fantastic cause creates a real buzz. It doesn't matter if your previous singing experience has only been in the bath, come along and have a go!” It’s exciting times for the choirs this year as they begin a new Sing for Life fundraising project for Thorpe Hall and also return to the Broadway Theatre for the summer season! It’s always great to see this venue made use of, and we continue to hope it can be reopened permanently, but for the time being the choirs will be rehearsing there and will later stage a one night only performance on Saturday July 5. ‘Saturday Night at the Movies’ will be a spectacular salute to Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, as well as a tribute to the Broadway’s own 50+ year history as a cinema. “With all three of the Peterborough Sings! choirs, we're constantly trying to develop the standard and range of our activities,” says Will. “We will continue to develop our regional and national profile and bring the joy of participating in singing activities to many more people.” www.peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk

LADIES WANTED TO SING FOR LIFE In June, Peterborough Voices will launch their third Sing for Life charity fundraising initiative, this year working with Sue Ryder to support their £6m Thorpe Hall Hospice appeal. They’re looking to recruit 40 diverse women from in and around Peterborough – women with a range of previous singing experience including none! – who over the course of 12 weeks will rehearse to perform with Peterborough Voices in a gala charity concert hosted by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Jane Smith on Saturday October 11 at Voyager Academy. Together with Peterborough Male Voice Choir’s Sing for Heroes project in aid of Help for Heroes, Sing for Life has raised a staggering £20,000 plus for charity since 2010. In previous years the project’s supported Cancer Research UK, but this year Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall appeal to raise £6 million for a purpose built state-of-the-art hospice has presented a unique opportunity to raise funds for a very worthy local cause with personal relevance for many people. Choral conductor Will Prideaux is excited by the latest project – “Sing for Life is open to absolutely everybody and training will be provided – we've got a fantastic team of professional vocal coaches and mentors who will have everyone up to speed in no time! Sing for Life 2014 is being championed by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Jane Smith, a longstanding supporter of Thorpe Hall and a regular host of their hugely popular Lights of Love event. “Sing for Life 2014 is not only an exciting musical opportunity for 40 lucky ladies,” she says, “it’s also a fantastic way to help raise funds for one of our favourite local charities. I’m just delighted to be asked to join in!” Joining couldn’t be easier, with recruitment events in the city centre on Saturday May 31 (12.30pm - 2.30pm) and Saturday June 7 (12.30pm -2.30pm) and introduction sessions at The Broadway Theatre, Peterborough on Friday June 13 (7-9pm) and Saturday June 14 (10.30am - 12.30pm). PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:

BUGNER AND SHAVERS TRIBUTE TO ALI

CHRIS TURNER

Last month I reported that former light heavyweight world champion John Conteh would be gracing us with his presence but he’s now been cancelled to make way for a three-event deal brought to our city by boxing promoter Kevin Sanders.

The last time I saw Posh legend Chris Turner it took him a few minutes to recognise me. But when I think about how unusually short our conversation went that day, I now know that he was being polite, as he was struggling to place where he knew me from.

Kevin has secured a three after dinner boxing line-up starting with a tribute to Muhammad Ali with Joe Bugner and Earnie Shavers (May 21) then Roberto Duran in September and finishing with Roy Jones Junior in November. All three evenings will be held at Radius (the Solstice) and the first of these events will give fight fans a genuine insight into Ali's fighting style in the 1970s. Bugner and Shavers fought one another but also Ali. The contest between The Greatest and Shavers was closely contested and Ali did enough in the last round to win the fight.

As reported recently by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Chris has frontal lobe dementia and hasn’t been able to look after his own basic needs for several years. He no longer recognises Lynne his wife and his helpless situation is barely believable when I remember what a larger than life human being Chris was.

Bugner's two clashes with Ali were a little more one sided but Ali always claimed he was one of his toughest opponents. Bugner's been to Peterborough before and was an excellent after-dinner speaker. The tribute to Ali includes a three-course meal and an opportunity to ask questions to both Bugner and Shavers. For tickets call: 07872 601467.

Chris’s mind was always ticking over. He was very observant and was always very interested in people. He didn’t really enjoy talking about himself but was always gracious to fans and visitors to the club who’d want to salute our London Road legend. He liked intelligent people and he liked people who were smart in appearance. On one hand you could have a deep conversation with him about evolution and on the other he’d be playing practical jokes on you, as I first found out when he pretended to straighten my tie but instead scrunched it up and squeezed my Half Windsor knot to the size of a marble. Such was Chris’s standing at the football club that no-one batted an eyelid when his days regularly consisted of rocking up about 10am and leaving around 4pm. In between he’d be on his mobile every hour, sit in and chat with us every so often and have a twohour lunch at some place.

CIAOS OUT > 16

www.espmag.co.uk

But the beauty was that he’d still get our matches sponsored, our executive boxes booked up, our match-day programme revenue in and our perimeter boards all advertised on. I guess saying no to Chris Turner was never an option to the dozens of businesses he came into contact with. That’s because Chris was the type of person you just loved being around. On a one-to-one level he would be sincere, honest, empathetic and interested in you. In a group he’d be the joker and the person that everything centred around. Chris had so many fantastic personality traits and to think he can no longer share them with us is heartbreaking. I have so much to thank Chris for. He helped me to settle in quickly and Chris helped me to stop taking myself so seriously. He was so much fun to be around to the point of being infectious. Our office was never the same when he moved on. It’s hard to imagine what Chris is like now. But he’s still with us. His heart is still beating. And while his heart continues to beat our memories of him become all the more precious.

Photo: Mike Harris

When I close my eyes the one image I always have of Chris is him leaning against the doorframe of our office with a mischievous look on his face, which meant he’d either secured us a dodgy match sponsor at the eleventh hour or he had some gossip to share.

Photo: Peterborough United FC

‘Turns’ was Posh’s commercial manager when I joined the football club as assistant press officer in 1998. He had a desk outside the office where I sat but spent more time in our office talking to the press office team about everything and anything from how rubbish we played on Saturday to what he was going to have for lunch at Fratelli’s.

BACK IN THE DAY...

SUNNY HUNNY ANYONE? Balderston have already started their ride-out season and next up is one of my favourites – a trip to Hunstanton on Friday May 23. There’s usually a good turnout for this one and motorcyclists are welcome to join the Balderston crew for their journey to buy a bag of chips. Riders will be setting off from the Hampton-based showroom at 5.30pm. In the meantime I’ll be working on convincing the powers that be to let me join the ride-out on the BMW S1000R I’m pictured with. This bike is basically a superbike with straight bars and no fairing. Its power has been trimmed from the sensational S1000RR’s 193bhp engine to make 160bhp, which is more manageable for the road and the upright riding position. But you’d never know the S1000R was lacking compared to its superbike sister. It’ll wheelie in third gear (so I’m told) and there’s more top speed than your neck muscles can cope with. The basic model comes well-equipped, and boasts two electronic rider aids, stability control, racing ABS, fullyadjustable suspension and a multi-function LCD dash. For a test ride on the S1000R and for more info about the Sunny Hunny rideout call Balderston on: 01733 565470.

ANDO ALWAYS IN OUR THOUGHTS The most sensible person (because he isn’t dressed as a nun) in this photo was suddenly taken from us a year ago. Ando, words cannot describe how much we miss you. One day we’ll be reunited you mush.

West Side Bar on Broadway had big shoes to fill when it opened back in the late 1990s. In its place before it was Muswells and every selfrespecting townie loved Muswells. Thankfully some of the Muswells magic could still be felt when West Side first flung open its doors. Personally, I was disappointed the new-look venue didn’t retain the bar football game my friends and I had hours of betting fun on back in the day when chatting up birds was secondary. But West Side was about moving on into the Millennium and the bar was quickly accepted as a more than adequate replacement for Muswells. The new venue had a fresh feel about it and people who were viewed as ‘trendy’ would frequent it. Physically nothing much had changed apart from the introduction of a designated DJ area. It was a time that saw the beginning of a transition bars were making towards becoming more like nightclubs. Dance areas were being factored into bar refits and although West Side didn’t really have a dedicated dance area, there was always

enough room to boogie just (annoyingly) in front of the door that led to the huge stairway for the toilets. For many West Side was the first stop on the town circuit on a night out. My friends and I would rock up about 9.30pm and do a stint until at least 11pm on a good night. ‘Good night’ being the operative words. You see, if you’d had a good time in West Side then you knew you’d be in for a good night.

The atmosphere set the tone for the rest of the evening and into the small hours. Usually it’d be standing room only and the bar would be three or four rows deep. But waiting to be served was the best bit. You’d be shoulder to shoulder with the person waiting to be served next to you and it proved to be an ideal opportunity to engage in the first of the night’s conversations with a girl you’d had your eye on the week before. Being first stop for so many revellers meant you’d be looking and smelling (albeit cigarette smoke) your freshest and this was good for making a lasting first impression. The beauty of being a townie in those days was the limited choice of venues we had. This meant the chances of bumping into that girl you first chatted up in West Side were odds on.

Speaking of odds on, today West Side is a ! bookies. I gambled on T C A E TH ho’s making his N many a ‘dead cert’ in my I T w H er ay 10." CAUGKarl ‘ab fab’ Wheorelou day but usually my gh on M to rb ck te lu Pe d in "Goo numbers would come up in meback boxing co West Side Bar.

Teaching

the taste of India The owner of Bollywood Tiger is not just serving up delicious Indian dishes but is showing his customers how to make them too!

From youngsters enjoying their first taste of cooking to adults keen to learn or improve their skills in the kitchen, Tahir is sharing his love of authentic Indian food with us all. If you don’t fancy the ‘Masterchef’ approach though, you could just dine out at this modern Yaxley restaurant and let Tahir and his team do it all for you! Year 4 students from William de Yaxley junior school have been amongst other local school children taking time out from the classroom to enjoy a fantastic time learning how to make some simple but delicious dishes at the restaurant. “It’s important for kids to have a good knowledge of herbs and spices,” says Tahir, “so they can make informed choices for a healthy diet later in life.”

“I go through the spices and what they look like in their raw form,” explains Tahir. “The tastes, smell and use and how to prepare them properly.” The complete beginners course even demonstrates how to chop food and use a knife properly. There’s a choice of tailored cookery courses for whatever level of skill you have from £60 for an individual, to £895 for a professional’s five day course. Not only do you get expert tuition but, even better – you get to eat what you’ve cooked afterwards! Tahir grows some of his own produce and is passionate about producing authentic dishes he learned from his grandmother and passes on these traditional skills to his chefs. “I believe it’s vital the owner of a restaurant is also a cook and can pass on his skills so that the food is

always produced to your own standards, regardless of who’s cooking it.” He’s hugely knowledgeable about the herbs and spices used, not just about flavours but their medicinal values too. An understanding of these also helps to produce exactly the dish you want as his chefs know just what to add or remove. “Indian food doesn’t have to be really hot or too spicy to be tasty,” says Tahir. “It’s all about having the right understanding of food and flavours and the right balance of spices.” So if you dine at Bollywood Tiger they can easily customise a dish to suit your palate. They specialise in cooking what Indian people really eat in their own homes, so try the Wednesday banquet for just £11.95 or the Sunday buffet and experience it for yourself.

A WEEKEND AWAY WITH

WARWICK ESP’s Mikey Clarke talks to local actor Warwick Davis about his latest show Mikey Clarke Weekend Escapes, holidaying as a kid, and why he tells his family not to look at his Twitter account…

Yaxley actor Warwick Davis has graced our television a lot lately. His latest offering is a show called Weekend Escapes with Warwick Davis, currently showing on ITV. The show sees Warwick and his wife Sam, kids Annabelle and Harrison and Sherlock the dog explore the British Isles – highlighting what makes a typical British holiday so great. During my exclusive chat with the Harry Potter actor, Warwick said – “I wanted to do this show because as a family, we really enjoy holidaying. There are so many great places in the UK to travel to and there are so many interesting people waiting to be discovered. I wanted to find eccentric British people – those that

make this country so great. I love talking to interesting people, finding out about their lives and what makes them tick. This show was a great way of doing that.”

With a career spanning over three decades, Warwick’s been in front of the camera for most of his life. His family have not. I wanted to know how comfortable they were with the experience. “The family had a great time,” said Warwick. “They really enjoyed it. It might have been a little different if the show was a fly-on-the-wall documentary. Yes, in the show you find out a lot about us as a family, but it’s more about us travelling around the country and documenting what we find.” Soon after the first episode screened, I noticed that Sherlock the dog had gone on Twitter! “Sherlock decided that after his television debut, he should have his own Twitter account,” Warwick joked. “I think he’s become a little bit of a sex symbol to other dogs, because loads of canine accounts are following him. I keep telling him that now he’s in the spotlight, there has to be some changes. He’s let himself go lately and hasn’t shaved for ages. He’s booked into the Pooch Parlour though, so hopefully he’ll look a little different soon.” The Star Wars actor is no stranger to a typical British holiday. “As a kid, I used to go on caravan breaks all over the country,” he told me. “These caravans were nothing like the ones available now. They used to get so cold inside them that there would literally be ice on the inside of the windows. But we never let the cold spoil our moods – after all, us Brits are used to bad weather. I recall holidays as a kid being quite magical too. Before the strict seatbelt laws were introduced, my family would put the back seats of the car down to let me lie and sleep. I’d often fall asleep at home and wake up at our destination.”

Weekend Escapes is not Warwick’s first travel show. With An Idiot Abroad 3 also on his CV, I took the opportunity to ask the well-travelled star how to make the most of a holiday. He told

me – “The trick is to not plan anything. When you plan activities, you build up expectations in your head and you’re sometimes disappointed. When you do things spontaneously, you’ll more than likely say ‘I never expected that’, or ‘wasn’t that fun’ – rather than ‘that was a disappointment’.” Having travelled all over the world, I wondered where Warwick was recognised the most. “I get recognised all over these days – particularly in Ireland. I went to Dublin last year, and I soon discovered that everyone there loves Karl Pilkington. Because Karl and I did An Idiot Abroad together, everyone recognised me. “When I’m out and about, I can’t go a few minutes without somebody wanting to take a ‘selfie’ with me. It’s quite funny when I get home and go onto my Twitter account because I can literally retrace all my steps from people tagging me in photos everywhere I’ve been. I say to the family on the days building up to birthdays and Christmas that they shouldn’t go onto my Twitter account because there will more than likely be photos of me purchasing presents. But don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with taking pictures with fans; after all, they are the ones that keep me working.” Catch Weekend Escapes with Warwick Davis, Fridays at 8pm on ITV. OUR HOLIDAY

HICCUPS

We’re getting in the mood for our hols – how about you? Warwick’s holiday special sparked a conversation in the office about our own experiences so we thought we’d share a few of our holiday disasters so you could have a laugh – we just hope yours go a little better… NEW MEANING FOR ‘BIG’ MAC

CAPRI CHAIR LIFT LEFT PEP HANGING!

After a heavy night out on the town in Cyprus, I decided to grab myself a McDonald’s burger at around 5am. I took it to my apartment and after just one bite, I fell asleep. In the morning – just a few hours later – I woke and decided to continue the burger for breakfast. After eating half of it, I felt something crawl down my arm… a HUGE Cypriot ant. A horrible thought dawned on me. I took a closer look at my meal and (as feared) saw that it had become antinfested during my sleep. Yes, I’d eaten half of an ant infested burger. Have you seen Cypriot ants? They are huge!

I'm not very good with heights and to this day I don't know why I agreed to go on a chair lift halfway up a mountain and back on the beautiful island of Capri on Italy's Amalfi coast.

Mikey Clarke

TENT TRAUMAS I once went camping with my (very serious and boring) ex in the New Forest. One day we returned from a day at some castle or museum or something (told you he was serious) to see movement in the tent. I freaked thinking we had burglars (not that there was much to nick apart from my smalls and a few biscuits) so we stood frozen for a minute before the ex bravely but gingerly opened the zip... to find not one burglar but four squirrels having a gang bang in our sleeping bag, having eaten their way into our tent and scoffed an entire packet of McVitie's digestives leaving crumbs and poo everywhere! I collapsed laughing on the grass but he just didn't see the funny side and squirrel wee on his pillow seemed to be the final straw! The trouble was, the more cross he got, the funnier I found it which didn't exactly improve his mood!

Actually, I do know why I did it – apparently it was the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ – yes, I fell for some marketing spiel. Anyway, in typical Italian fashion there was no pre-chair lift ride safety talk or instructions. You just queued up for a chair and jumped on while it was still moving. If you were lucky enough for one of the two attendants to take their eye off every girl in the queue for a few seconds, then the bar holding you in the chair was secured by him before sending you off up the mountain. Just before I got on I joked with my girlfriend how I wouldn't be at all amused if the chair lift malfunctioned halfway up or down and we'd be left dangling waiting to be rescued. Sure enough as fate would have it my worse nightmare came true. At approximately half way up the mountain a loud grinding noise was swiftly followed by a massive judder and with it the chair lift came to an abrupt halt. A good dozen of us or more where left hanging in mid-air and I began to compose a farewell text to my family and friends. My girlfriend in the chair in front of me was laughing her head off and began taking loads of photos of me in my terrified state. My ordeal went on for a good two minutes before the chair lift started off again. When we reached the top I was determined to walk down only for one of the attendants to declare it would take at least a couple of days! He said they'd stopped the chair lift for photo opportunities but I wasn't convinced.

I think that holiday was the final slap in the face to me how mismatched we were and I ended it soon afterwards. I'll always be grateful to that squirrel!

So I had no choice but to take the ride back down – this time with my eyes firmly shut. I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to put colour back in my cheeks with a bottle of Chianti.

Katy B was ‘on a mission’ to top the charts and this little red (head) looks like she’ll still be top of the charts with her latest release… Katy’s been busy doing the promotional rounds performing live on Alan Carr and Sunday Brunch to name but a few and with her latest album Little Red reaching number one on release, there are high hopes for the new single Still which is out on May 4. Katy’s been caught up in the whirlwind that comes with the release of a new album, new single and a forthcoming string of festivals and gigs. Asked to mentor on The Voice with Ricky Wilson, Katy B has been steadily gaining greater depth as an artist and her new material’s taking her to a whole new level. The Peckham pop-star unleashed some mighty vocals on tracks like Crying For No Reason which paved the way for the success of this second album. The critical praise and fan support has overflowed into sold out live dates. Next offering Still, is an album favourite; a yearning and emotive ballad which sees Katy’s impressive voice sounding better than ever. Katy will be on the road for the rest of the year now, smashing it at the summer festivals before her biggest UK headline tour to date in October, during which Katy will play London’s Roundhouse. The album Little Red is the follow up to 2012’s breakout number one debut On A Mission and the critically lauded collaborative Danger EP. Katy’s been known for her clubland tracks but this new album ventures into richer and more complicated emotional terrain,

and is well, just a bit more grown up... in a good way! "That first album had a certain innocence about it," Katy says in retrospect. "I think this album has a bit more experience. My relationships have got more serious, I’ve moved out of my parents’ house, I’m dealing with issues on my own. My friends are all going through that transition as well — those questions you ask of yourself as an adult.”

statement from a fast-growing artist. “I can listen to it and cry on a good four songs," Katy says. "But,” she adds with a smile, “I still want something to dance to.” www.katybofficial.com

True to these words, Little Red covers a lot of ground, from the ravepowered extrovert joy of first single What Love Is Made Of and the hungry longing of the Radio 1 A listed house track 5AM to the simmering fever of Tumbling Down. Katy's knack for telling precise yet universal stories in her lyrics, pinning an emotion with a vivid detail, placing the listener right there in the room with her, is fully on display throughout. Anthemic electronic ballad Crying For No Reason, featuring perhaps her finest vocal performance to date, was inspired by a friend who burst into tears while driving because of pent-up guilt over the way her last relationship ended. The album also demonstrates the scope of Katy’s musical passions. Growing up in a house where her mum played ABBA and Hot Chocolate while her dad, himself a singer, preferred Nina Simone and the blues, in the making of this album she found as much inspiration in timeless songwriters and keen observers such as Joni Mitchell and David Bowie as she did in the latest dance producers from her home base on Rinse FM.

Movie Previews

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Cast: Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy & Ellen Page Director: Bryan Singer

Released

MAY

22

Bryan Singer, the Director of X-Men and X-Men 2 (the best in the series – in my opinion!) has returned to the Marvel universe to give us what he promises will be, “The biggest and best X-Men movie yet.” The storyline alternates between 1980 and the near-future. It sees Wolverine sent back in time to stop an event that leads to the post-apocalyptic, Sentinel (mutant-hunting robots) infested future the X-Men find themselves in. The time-travel element allows the much loved characters from the original X-Men trilogy to join forces with their younger selves from X-Men: First Class. This ultimate hero ensemble could arguably be even more impressive than what we saw in The Avengers.

GODZILLA Cast: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche & Ken Watanabe Director: Gareth Edwards

I wouldn’t blame you for debating whether or not we really need another Godzilla movie, particularly as the 1998 reboot was just awful. Rest assured though, the 2014 version looks like it could be the best one yet.

The story sees Toho's iconic giant monster once again threatening our very existence – that’s what he does. But, unlike the other films in the franchise, this is promised to be a very character-driven movie. Likeable characters are extremely important in films like this because the more you like a person, the more you’re concerned for their safety. Therefore, you’re more likely to enjoy the flick.

EDGE OF TOMORROW

A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST

Released: May 30

Released: May 30

The epic action takes place in the near future, where an alien race has attacked the Earth. Major William Cage is an officer who’s never fought a day in his life. He’s dropped into battle and is killed within minutes. Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop – forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again... and again.

Fans of Family Guy and Ted will be pleased to hear that Seth MacFarlane has directed, produced and co-written this goofy comedy. MacFarlane plays a cowardly sheep farmer who backs out of a gunfight. When a mysterious and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage – which is soon put to the test. Expect offensive but hilarious humour.

All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

It’s also comforting to see that this instalment is helmed by Gareth Edwards, who gained critical attention with his feature-film debut, Monsters.

TARZAN 3D Released: May 2

INFAMOUS: SECOND SON

A baby boy accompanies his adventurous mother and father on a journey into Africa. When his parents are killed, the boy’s adopted and raised by Gorillas. The boy, now named Tarzan, soon integrates into the family of primates but longs for human contact. This is a film for the whole family and will no doubt look stunning on the big screen in 3D.

(PS4) Out now The second major A-list exclusive for PS4 is an early game-changer for new-gen consoles – by raising the bar for open world adventures.

####

Deviating somewhat from the first two games, main protagonist Delsin Rowe goes on the run from the Dept of Unified Protection – an organisation which is ruthlessly hunting down and caging superhumans – and unleashes powers that gleefully lights up the PS4. It’s prevented from perfection by a hap-hazard morality system that doesn’t blend seamlessly with the main story, but when your superhero playground is this much fun on a brand new console – the action really does live up to the hype.

SABOTAGE Released: May 7

LEGO: THE HOBBIT

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back! The action star leads an elite DEA task force that takes on the world's most feared drug cartels. After successfully completing a dangerous raid on one particular cartel safe house, they believe their work is done. That is until the team members mysteriously start to be eliminated one-by-one. As the body count rises, everyone is a suspect.

(XONE/PS4/WIIU/360/PS3/3DS/PC) Out now After taking two steps forwards, Bilbo and co. take one step back – as the latest LEGO effort fails to advance the famous brick-based games.

###

It seemed like LEGO games had gone as far as they could, then the likes of Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and The Lord of the Rings introduced voice-acting to take it to the next level – but unfortunately The Hobbit underwhelms in comparison. Despite a disjointed adventure – that adds a new gameplay system – it still has the LEGO visual charm to make this journey from the first two films still worth taking.

BAD NEIGHBOURS Released: May 9

DARK SOULS II (PS3/360) Out now

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne play a couple with a new-born baby, who end up being forced to live next-door to a fraternity house. As you can imagine, raising a toddler next to a bunch of party animals is not a good mix. Expect filthy but hilarious comedy, much like the Director’s (Nicholas Stoller) other films – such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.

Those who feared that the ‘hardest next-gen game TM’ would get easier for its second outing, fear no more . . . it’s still bloody rock hard. Its unique old-school action RPG style hasn’t changed dramatically – and its multiplayer might not be quite up to scratch – but this 60 hour-plus game offers difficult, but rewarding, combative gameplay in the sprawling world of Drangelic.

####

There are frustrating death penalties that will leave you virtually thumping the wall – but working out your enemy is a soul-fulfilling experience.

FRANK

METAL GEAR SOLID: GROUND ZEROES (PS4/XONE/PS3/360) Out now

Released: May 9

This hors d’oeuvre to the main course is a bizarrely noteworthy series prologue.

Frank tells the story of a young wannabe musician, Jon, who discovers he's bitten off more than he can chew after joining a band of eccentric pop musicians led by the mysterious Frank and his petrifying sidekick, Clara. One of Frank's unique qualities is the fact that he wears a giant fake head. Is it just me, or is that giant fake head seriously terrifying?

As a cheaper priced game (generally around 20 quid) this has been derided in some quarters as a DLC-sized rip-off, but this has smart and tactical gameplay to whet your appetite before the full retail Phantom Pain outing.

####

BIOSHOCK INFINITE: BURIAL AT SEA – EP 2 DLC (360/PS3/PC) Out now

MALEFICENT

The second instalment of this downloadable return to Rapture via Bioshock Infinite blocks the leaks that were present in Episode One – with a meatier eight hour campaign.

Released: May 29 This is the untold story of Disney's iconic villain from the 1959 classic ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Maleficent has a tranquil life growing up in a peaceful forest kingdom, until an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone.

#####

BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS BLACKGATE – DELUXE EDITION (360/PS3/WIIU/PC) Out now If you read my review a couple of months back of the PS Vita port of Assassin’s Creed: Liberation – then you’ll know they’re not always a very good idea. Reviews by Gavin Miller

Postman Pat looks nothing like the cartoon character I grew up watching and loving. When did that happen? Don’t worry, it’s just the style that’s changed, all of your favourite characters (and more) are still in this feature length version of the popular television show. In it, Pat finds his beliefs challenged after entering a TV talent show competition.

This time round you play as Elizabeth in a carefully crafted final adventure that aims to bring closure to her story which offers great stealth, a satisfying ending… and Big Daddies. As the worlds of the original Bioshock and Infinite collide – this provides a truly compelling send-off that will leave fans simply enraptured.

POSTMAN PAT: THE MOVIE Released: May 28

As the legendary Snake, this instalment (set a year after the events of Peace Walker) charts a rescue mission that solidly bridges a franchise gap that, despite a weird ending, provides a compelling two hours-plus of stealth entertainment.

###

But as a companion piece – set three weeks after the end of the console versions of Origins with The Joker, Penguin and Black Mask running amok in prison – this 2D downloadable side-scrolling, formerly handheld-based outing just about works. Jagged HD visuals and map confusion aside, this is a worthwhile addition to Dark Knight lore.

TOUR SERIES RETURNS TO CITY CENTRE Round three of the unique, team-based cycling series will again take place in the heart of the city centre, using the same clockwise circuit that was popular with spectators in previous years. Britain’s leading male cyclists will be in action and the women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series will also be showcased to celebrate the return of elite cycling to the city. Annette Joyce, Head of Commercial Operations at Peterborough City Council, told ESP: “I am delighted that once again Peterborough will be playing host to world class cycling. The Pearl Izumi Tour Series takes place in the heart of our beautiful city centre, generating a buzz of excitement and bringing a wealth of economic benefits with it. “The series is a fantastic opportunity to raise interest in cycling and the benefits of keeping fit and healthy to improve our wellbeing. We are grateful to the Travelchoice team for

providing the money to host both the men’s and women’s races and for the opportunity for local organisations to use the course for their own competitions before the main event. “The event always creates an amazing atmosphere and it is fantastic how the city is showcased by ITV4 who film the event for it to be transmitted to a national audience the very next day.” The men’s race will include Eye-based rider Steve Lampier of the Velosure Giordana team, who is a former winner of the Sprints Jersey in the Series. Disability charity Inspire Peterborough will be organising a wheelchair relay race as a prelude to the main men’s and women’s Tour Series races and the course will also host a trikes and karts workplace challenge. Highlights of the Peterborough event will be shown on ITV4 on the evening of Wednesday May 21.

TWO WHEEL SAFETY WITH A ‘TWIST’... The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership has launched the second phase of its TWIST (That’s Why I Should Think) campaign to tackle the number of accidents involving motorcycles. As a motorcyclist it’s upsetting to hear that we are 30 times more likely to die on the road than a car driver and TWIST is highlighting the potential dangers we face on the road with a series of short animated films and a database creation of regional training courses where we can improve our skills.

The Pearl Izumi Tour Series is making a welcome return to Peterborough on Tuesday May 20 and ESP will be there to capture all the action.

Clair George, from the CPRSP, said: “We want to make the roads as safe as possible for motorcyclists. In Cambridgeshire and Peterborough motorcyclists make up less than one per cent of traffic but are involved in 12 per cent of all accidents. This campaign will help motorcyclists to anticipate potential danger on our roads and it will polish up their general riding skills.” The main element of the TWIST campaign, first launched in May 2013, was an animated video which has attracted almost 27,000 views on YouTube. KYLE’S SUPER SPORT DREAM COME TRUE This month’s Pride and Joy featured car is a very lovely Fiesta Super Sport replica proudly owned by Kyle Ayres. Kyle had always wanted to own a Super Sport but settled for creating a replica version to avoid shelling out lots of money to buy and insure an original after passing his test at 17. He told me: “I bought the car a month before my 17th birthday so I could get it on the road in time for passing my test. I always wanted a Super Sport but they were rare and expensive and only 21 of them were registered on the road when I was looking in 2011.

some of the daft and dangerous things that can get bikers into trouble – and encourages them to enhance their skills to make them better and safer riders.

“So I decided to build a Super Sport replica. The car’s been completely restored and has Super Sport wheel arches, spoilers, wheels and stripes. All the mechanical parts have either been changed or restored and underneath it’s running on XR2 shock absorbers and springs.

The second phase, TWIST2, comprises four shorter films which this time focus on the mistakes that drivers make which can have serious implications for riders. The films challenge riders to learn to anticipate mistakes made by others.

“The interior’s been re-trimmed with the correct Super Sport material. It was my every day car for nearly three years and has never let me down. Nowadays I only use it in good weather and have a mk6 Fiesta as my daily driver.”

The database of courses and all the films can be seen on the campaign website www.twistandride.net

Keep your Pride and Joy stories and photos coming in to office@espmag.co.uk Remember, it can be a car or motorcycle you used to own or currently own – as long as it’s your pride and joy for whatever reason!

EGGSTATIC CHILDREN GET CHOCOLATE TREATS The 17th annual Easter egg run organised by Peterborough Lambretta and Vespa Scooter Club was another eggcellent success and I was proud to have been a part of it. More than 200 scooters set off in convoy from The Cherry Tree in Woodston to The Manor children’s home where we dropped off dozens of Easter eggs for the children to enjoy. Next stop was Thorpe Hall Hospice where the Sue Ryder team took delivery of the rest of the eggs that were donated by riders who’d been part of the convoy. This event is always well organised and scooterists come from all over East Anglia to be part of it. Well done to the club and thanks for being so accommodating as usual.

summer trend Alert

and beauty

ESP’s Charlotte Jolly has all the latest health and beauty news…

Breaking beauty news… Latex Effect polish from Nails Inc has just arrived and it’s set to be hot this summer.

charlotte.jolly@espmag.co.uk

These four new super smooth polishes bring a band new texture to your nails – latex! It applies glossy but dries into an almost waxy finish that looks and feels just like latex. With pastel (Petal Pink) dusky (Nude) and bright shades (Aqua & Hot Pink) to choose from there’s one for every occasion this season. For the best effect apply two coats of the Latex Effect polish over Kensington Caviar base coat and allow to dry well between coats. There’s no need for a top coat as this will only take away from the show stopping Latex effect! Get painting girls.

A close shAve… in Peterborough Peterborough barber, Liza Schwartz of Spencer’s Hair Salon on Lincoln Road, has won the title of East Anglia’s Best Wet Shaving Barber in the search for Britain’s Best. She fought off razor sharp competition from 14 other talented barbers to take the regional title at the Sheffield event. Liza is now preparing for the final round in the hunt to find Britain’s Best Wet Shaving Barber which is an event organised by the British Barbers’ Association and premium male grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge. The final’s being held on Sunday May 25 and is set to feature a special ‘speed shaving’ tournament inside a boxing ring!

Photos: Chris Brudenell

A total of eight barbers, including Liza, will battle it out, with the winner landing themselves the prestigious title of Britain’s Best Wet Shaving Barber as well as a starring role in a shaving commercial for The Bluebeards Revenge, and £3k of grooming products from the luxury male grooming brand. Liza is not only in the final but is the only female barber competing – Wowzers! As you can imagine she’s pretty excited; “It was fantastic to get as far as the regional final in the first place, so I’m absolutely thrilled to have won it. I know there have been lots of really talented barbers in the running so far, so to reach the final is a privilege, and I really hope I can go on to take the title.” Peterborough’s already well and truly reached ‘peak beard’ with Liza doing us proud and I wish her the best of bearded luck for the finals. Fingers crossed that Liza takes home the crown as Queen of the Wet Shaves.

men, rock your fAce with rockfAce Talking of beards and shaving, Rockface for men is a great new range of skincare and shaving products for those of you who want to look and smell great but with little effort, leaving you more time to play and work hard or simply stay in bed longer! With shave, shower and skincare formulations to choose from, all of them are performance driven and deliver exceptional results and with a citrusy, woody fragrance so you’re sure to smell your manly best. I kindly asked my other half to try some of Rockface’s new shaving products in particular their shave butter. Normally when it comes to shaving he’s not keen, in fact he completely avoids it! If he does shave, he uses a cut throat razor but no matter what product he uses he’s always left with a sore face and neck which puts him off. So imagine his delight when he tried Rock Face shaving butter which is designed to hydrate the skin before and after shaving. It sounded perfect but did it deliver?

The answer is YES. Edward massaged the shave butter into his skin (wet) then shaved as normal. Once he’d finished he rinsed his face and already he noticed that his skin was calmer and softer than normal – no stinging rash or redness as of yet. He then used the butter again in place of his usual after shave balm letting it soak in naturally. Still no sign of soreness. He was very impressed and has been using it regularly since. Result! Priced at only £4.99 for 75ml it's around the same sort of price as other men's shaving balms, but actually works. It also goes a long way as Edward only needed a small amount to cover the entire shave area. He described it as, “The Everest of men’s skin care” …so men climb your shaving peak with Rockface and conquer dry, irritated skin forever. The Rockface range is available from Sainsbury’s, Superdrug and Waitrose, and online at www.rockface4men.com

Think anTi-aging comes in a jar?

Time To reThink your life... Today millions are spent on holding back the processes of aging using everything we can get our hands on, or what we can afford, whether that’s surgery or buying the latest pot of ‘hope in a jar’. that’s getting around from day to day but not one living in harmony. Symptoms such as these are causing disharmony in the body and can be experienced in a younger body as well as an older one. In other words you’re as old as the condition of your cells! The biggest challenge of aging in the modern world is being ready to change our minds about it, or shifting our current thinking and perceptions about aging. We are all woven into this tapestry of life; we are nature itself and are part of the whole. Everything in nature declines slowly and gracefully, unless of course it’s choked full of chemicals and destroyed through man’s manipulation. As we are of this earth we too mirror nature and so when we’re choked full of toxic wastes and by-products from physical, mental and emotional debris we slowly block off our natural flow. We stem our ability to absorb nutrients whilst holding onto waste and more, but ultimately we destroy our cells.

The word ‘anti-aging’ creates a battle between it and us; it becomes a beast that we have to slay no matter what. Even younger people are having things nipped, tucked, sucked out, implanted or filled back in at an age where they should be living in a body which looks and feels every bit flexible, fluid, juicy and vibrant. The perfect body image is constantly shoved under our noses in the media but in reality it does not exist; even if it did it’s only in the eye of the beholder, or what your own definition of it is. You might think it’s only the outer appearance that counts and basically stuff the inside as no one can see it, right? Well I can name a few visible signs… • Digestive issues, constipation, bloating, heaviness, indigestion • Zero energy – unless you are drip fed caffeine, sugars and refined grains

38

• Dry, dull looking skin • Dark circles and/or bags under the eyes • Skin losing elasticity early on in your years • Excess wrinkles • Joint pains and calcification (stiffness) • No creativity left inside • Rigid thinking – not flexible, not willing to grow • Lack of youthful optimism… and much more. These are signs that the body is buckling under pressure, this pressure is waste, gas, inflammation acidity, bacteria/yeast overgrowth and literally rubbish just sticking inside. This is not a body that’s full of vibrancy or life, far from it; it’s a body

When we cut ourselves off from this natural flow we push against life, we choke off the substance that can flow through and help us to thrive… • We shallow breathe instead of taking moments of deep belly breaths which oxygenate, calm and rebalance us. • We overeat unnatural foods which are heavily processed, exceed levels of grains, dairy and red meat. Or we may survive the day on stimulants. • We’re strapped to technology all day and lose ourselves in cyberspace. • We’re bombarded with information from TV, internet, magazines, so much so we do not switch off and spend enough quiet time – when was the last time you switched it all off and connected with nature and all its stimulation?

• We cover and clog our skin with chemicals from our everyday lotions and potions. • We are in unnatural light most of the day, sealed up in homes with central heating and air conditioning in the offices. We use man-made chemicals to fill our homes with a smell of nature – why not just open the windows and put some fresh flowers/plants around? • We consume numerous supplements to fight the aging process – many of which are useless. • We take medication for symptoms our body uses to tell us something is wrong (this is not to say drugs are not necessary for some), but many people are very reliant on over the counter drugs for digestive issues, headaches etc without looking at the root cause. • We don’t bend, stretch or move our body naturally, or we may be an exercise junky, over burdening our body with excessive demands then pour in dense proteins/fats to try to balance it all out. • We block our natural daily circadian rhythm with stress, lack of sleep, staying up too late, not resting when we need and much more. All of this speeds up the aging process. All of this opposes nature, it cuts us off, so by doing the reverse we can start to build a new vision for how we want to look and feel, now and in the years to come. It’s your body, your life and you get to choose how to look after it. Reduce/remove dense processed foods that clog you system and opt for more natural and seasonal foods that have not long been picked. Why not try out food markets from local growers?

Reduce the amount of toxic chemicals you are putting on your skin. You’ll get a lot softer skin by using a dry skin brush and putting a small amount of coconut or other natural oil on your skin. Remember it’s a living, breathing organ that absorbs what you put onto it.

For footie fans there’s nothing like a trip to Wembley and a win seals the deal! ESP’s Chris Brudenell joined Peterborough United fans on a day to remember as Posh returned to the hallowed turf once again and came away victorious… The atmosphere on the day was buzzing from the outset and Posh’s 3-1 win against Chesterfield in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy was just what everyone needed. Darren Fergusson said afterwards – “It’s great to play at Wembley. But only if you win. We are all delighted with the success. It was one of our main targets for the season and to have achieved it is a great feeling for all of us. “It’s a fantastic day for the club. I’m pleased for the fans as their backing was again awesome today and I’m delighted for the chairman who is a good man – something I would still have said even if we’d lost.” Darragh added – “It was a great day and brilliant to have a trophy in the cabinet, but we need to use that success to galvanise the rest of the campaign. We want it to be the first of two trips to Wembley and take the momentum from that victory into the play-offs.” Posh are hoping the fans will give them the same support in their bid to make a second trip to Wembley… fingers crossed! Meanwhile Peterborough United have secured their spot in the Sky Bet League One play-offs and will play the first leg at London Road on Saturday May 10 (12.15pm) with the opposition yet to be confirmed (at the time of writing). Tickets are on sale for the tie at www.theposhtickets.com, via the Ticketmaster Hotline 0844 847 1934 and in person at the London Road Box Office. Travelling by bike, foot or public transport has more benefits than you might think…

D

id you know that moderate pedal-pushing burns up to 500 calories per hour, more than swimming? Or that on average if you cycle to work rather than driving you’ll save £400 a year in petrol costs alone? There’s no denying the health, well-being and money-saving benefits of switching to cycling, walking or public transport rather than reaching for the car keys for every journey. And this summer there are more reasons than ever to think about travelling sustainably in Peterborough with loads of events coming up and a dedicated project to help you find out about your travel options. The team from Sustrans are already working with Peterborough schools through their Bike It Plus programme to help staff and students travel safely using bike, foot or bus. From late May the friendly Sustrans team will also be working in the Ortons to give free information and advice to over 2,000 households to help people take advantage of the benefits of ditching the car more often for everyday journeys. We’ve spoken to a couple of Peterborians who are already feeling the benefits of active, sustainable, travel.

A faster commute Ann Casey lives in Orton Longueville and commutes to Peterborough train station every week day. Her journey is 2.5 miles and takes just 10-11 minutes. “I opted for a Trek hybrid bike because it’s light but not too flimsy and I’ve added puncture proof tyres,” explains Ann. “I started cycling every day two years ago because I was fed up with the costs of the car park at the station and thought it

wouldn’t take that much longer to cycle. I also wanted to get fit as I sit at a desk all day at work.” When she started cycling, Ann invested in good waterproofs, a helmet and high-vis jacket along with bike lights, pannier bags, and a secure lock. This initial investment has paid off, “I’ve saved money on the car park and petrol. I’m much fitter and have lost weight and I arrive at work much more alert. I managed to do the British Heart Foundation 50 mile charity bike ride last summer, which I would never have tried before.”

Eric Winstone

Eric Winstone, Principal of Peterborough’s Ormiston Bushfield Academy cycles in his spare time to keep fit and takes part in events like the ‘Ride London 100’ cycle event which has over 20,000 participants.

“Peterborough is a city taking the lead in the current cycling boom. Planners had the foresight to lay miles of cycle ways perfect for those short local journeys and these have continued to expand as the city develops. The Green Wheel and Ferry Meadows are fantastic facilities for all types of cyclists.” Eric cycles as often as possible and has been working with Sustrans to get more Ormiston Bushfield students travelling sustainably. “There are clearly many benefits of cycling and walking like helping you get fit, overcoming stress, and making the most of the great outdoors. It’s a good thing to do with friends or family and to explore new places, plus there are no gym fees.” Known as the Personalised Travel Planning project and delivered by Sustrans in partnership with Peterborough City Council’s Travelchoice, the work is funded through the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund. To find out more about the project call Eric on 01733 319981 or email eric.schneider@sustrans.org.uk

MYTH BUSTING ON FOSTERING… Whether you’ve never considered becoming a foster carer before, or if you have but thought you couldn’t do it for one reason or another, maybe it’s time to think again. Fostering is a great opportunity to change a life – including your own! So, let’s bust some of those myths that make you think it’s not for you… There is no upper age limit to foster Foster carers need to be at least 21 years old and have the time and space to provide care and support for a child. Single? No problem Children have been adopted into stable, loving homes by single parents and couples, whatever their gender or sexual orientation, for many years Ethnicity is not a barrier There are children from many different backgrounds living in foster care and a need for carers from different ethnic backgrounds to provide the best possible matches. It’s quicker than you think… In fact, you can now become approved as a foster carer within six months and have a child placed with you immediately after that.

Disabilities or not, you can still foster Health problems and disabilities are not barriers to fostering, provided you can care for the child you foster. Pets are allowed! Provided your pet does not pose a threat to the child’s health or safety, then it can be an excellent addition to the family. Renting, or worried about space issues? To become a foster carer, you don’t need to be a home-owner, as long as you have a stable tenancy, consent from your landlord and a spare bedroom for the child to sleep in. British resident? You don’t need to be British to foster a child, but you must have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

It’s Foster Care Fortnight from May 12 – 25 so it’s a great time to find out more and give it some thought. You can speak to the Peterborough Fostering team at Queensgate Shopping Centre during the first week and Serpentine Green Shopping Centre during the second week of the campaign. Take a look at www.peterboroughfostering.co.uk for more details.

Complete with an impressive laser light show, this is a mustsee for all Pink Floyd fans, and they’re in Stamford on Saturday May 24.

THE BIBLE’S BOO HEWERDINE PLAYS NORTH STREET BAR Another good gig at North Street Bar takes place on Thursday May 29. Boo Hewerdine will be performing live there in the Courtyard Room as part of his ‘My Name in the Brackets’ National Tour. His support on the night is by local singer/songwriter John Quinn – another talented singer/songwriter who was recently seen auditioning on The Voice, and is frontman of The Fleeting Minds. Boo was a founder member of cult band The Bible, and has received outstanding acclaim as a songwriter and performer. Over 400 of his songs have been recorded by artists including Eddi Reader, K.D.Lang, Natalie Imbruglia, The Corrs, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Mel C. He has been nominated for an Ivor Novello music award, and Nick Hornby gives over an entire chapter to him in his book ‘31 Songs’ describing him as ‘intimidatingly good’. He started his working career in the warehouse at Andy’s Records which had one of its first stores in Peterborough. A unique shop in many ways, and Boo reckons he learnt so much about the trade by being exposed to such a wide range of music. You can buy tickets from North Street Bar or call 01733 343785.

STAMFORD ROCKS WITH FLOYD, HENDRIX AND CREAM I was only talking to a friend the other day about a unique music festival that took place in 1967 at Spalding Bulb Auction Halls. It featured The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Pink Floyd, The Move, Geno Washington, Zoot Money and Sounds Force Five – ALL on the same bill on the same day! It must still be a lasting memory for those who got there. Many thousands didn’t! By coincidence, the next day, I was sent the bookings schedule for May by The Stamford Corn Exchange, and in May there are tribute acts to

Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Pink Floyd. Not the originals of course but some very talented musicians would be needed to come anywhere near the originals. For instance, I have seen Think Floyd a few times myself and they are very impressive. Now in their 20th year, the brand new Think Floyd production for 2014 features the whole range of classic Pink Floyd from early Syd Barrett, through Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here to The Division Bell.

Before that, you have the opportunity to visit Voodoo Room at The Corn Exchange on Friday May 16. Presumably named after famous Hendrix/Cream songs, Voodoo Chile and White Room, the band perform the best of Hendrix and Cream material, with the energy and virtuosity that is at the heart of this incredible music. They deliver a full on show that brilliantly combines these two massive influences on the world of classic blues/rock. Voodoo Room are a trio which fits nicely as so were Cream and The Hendrix Experience. The band formed in 2012 and already the word on the street is that they’re a must see! If you Google Voodoo Room there are some excellent samples of their live performances. Worth seeing. Tickets for either show are available from The Stamford Corn Exchange box office on 01780 766455.

GREG FIDLER RELEASES FIRST SINGLE

A local artist who studied at Ken Stimpson School, before graduating from the Academy of Contemporary Music, Greg Fidler, has just released his first single on ITunes and Amazon

This talented singer-songwriter writes, produces and performs his own material and is planning to do some local appearances this year so how would he describe the new song ‘1000 Moments’ and its inspiration? Greg told us – “I'd say the style is singersongwriter rock with a pop influence. The inspiration for me comes from heartbreak and hard times. I believe that the meaning of a song belongs to the listener, so I don't go into what my songs are about.” Greg’s been working hard on the scene for 10 years so what are his aspirations musically? “The industry is based so much on luck,” explains Greg “so any aspirations feel out of my control. I just focus on writing and releasing what I want

to, and that should give me the best chance of longevity in future if I sign a major deal.” Greg’s excited about the new release and told us – “It is a song that comes from true expression, so I am excited for people to listen to something that hasn't been contrived and for it to mean something to them.” Despite still being based in Peterborough Greg isn’t necessarily seen on the local circuit frequently but hopefully we’ll get to see him play soon. “I mainly live here because I have a studio, but most of my social life is in London. For my next London show I will probably do a few local acoustic sets to warm up, maybe at open mic nights. We'll see!” In the meantime, if you want to hear Greg Fidler with ‘1000 Moments’, just Google it and you can listen and learn more facts about the singer/songwriter.

BOURNE BIG GIG RAISES CASH CHARITY CD LAUNCHES WITH HUGE GIG IN THE CITY Albion

Leona Bilby

Dumb

Congratulations to students and teachers from Bourne Academy and Bourne Grammar School for raising £600 for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. The funds raised are particularly impressive because it was all raised in one night in April at The Bourne Corn Exchange. It featured some of the top local youth talent with Albion headlining the bill, with support from The Straights, Sons of Kal-EL, Dumb and Leona Bilby. The line-up for the ‘Big Gig’ evening was put together by Ted Fisk, Head of Performing Arts at Bourne Academy and founder of Cutting Hedge Promotions, which is a non-profit making music promotion company that offers the students the opportunity to gain hands on experience with live music events: “The school are very supportive of these events as it provides the students with real experiences to develop their musicianship and technical know-how in a highly pressured situation, which is of course part and parcel of the industry.” A capacity crowd created a great atmosphere throughout the night and gave a huge response to the performances and manager of the Corn Exchange Ian Bland was impressed with the whole evening telling ESP – “This was a very well run event indeed and the behaviour of the students was excellent. It had a fantastic family atmosphere.”

FEELIN’ GOOD @ THE KEY

The Key Theatre plays host to the legendry Dr Feelgood on Saturday May 31. Formed on Canvey Island in Essex in the early 1970s Dr Feelgood remains one of the most popular and exciting live rhythm and blues acts in the world, and in their original line up featured the dynamic Wilko Johnson.

The current line up, continue the impressive tradition and atmosphere of a live Dr Feelgood gig, and features the rhythm section, Kevin Morris on drums and Phil Mitchell on bass, both 29 years in the band and Steve Walwyn on guitar who’s been with the band for 23 years.

The raw and uncompromising style of their performance resulted in the album Stupidity that immediately went to the number one position in the UK charts.

Vocalist Robert Kane (formerly of The Animals) is the most recent addition – joining in 1999 after the tragic death of Lee Brilleaux.

Dr. Feelgood have also enjoyed global success with a string of hit singles including Roxette, Back in the Night, Milk and Alcohol, Down at the Doctors, She Does it Right, Going Back Home and See You Later Alligator – which gave the group their first gold record.

The band continues to tour extensively throughout the world with their own unique style. Book your Doctor’s appointment at the Key theatre box office 01733 207239.

Congratulations to David Pleasance and Gordon Leed of Musos4U who have collaborated to release a CD album of (mainly) acoustic talent from this area. And it is aimed at providing important funds for the Peterborough based children’s charity Little Miracles, which has their headquarters based here and which was featured on the Nick Knowles DIY SOS TV program. Little Miracles is a parent led support group and charity for families with children that have additional needs, disabilities and life limiting conditions. They run daily sessions giving social and play opportunities for the whole family. The album’s entitled ‘Hearts in Harmony’ and features tracks from a whole host of bands and well known solo artists from the local area like Opaque, Lesley Curtis, Flashback Photograph, Lexie Green, Latino Sound and Thornton Holmes. All of these artists and a dozen more have each donated a song on the album, and will be attending the official launch with most, if not all, performing live on the night. The launch is being held at The North Street Bar on Thursday May 22, and as there are so many artists expected to perform, the organisers have taken over the whole place, two floors, with a stage on each floor, and will have rotating acts. Furthermore the ground floor of North Street Bar is wheelchair friendly, and there’s a small courtyard, which will be utilised for all the Little Miracles families who attend the launch. If like David and Gordon, you’re a fan of local music, it sounds like a brilliant opportunity to see so many acts assembled and performing in one place on the same night. And to remember the night, get a copy of the album ‘Hearts in Harmony’. Remember this will benefit a really great local charity so everyone’s a winner!

THE SUPERCALAS RELEASE ALBUM

I recently received a copy of the latest album release by the Stamford based band, The Supercalas. They’re a four piece, consisting of singer/songwriter Nick Lander, guitarist Richard Gombault, with Conrad Stubbs on bass and Craig Sclare on drums. I enjoyed their previous album so sat down to give this new one a listen. It’s called ‘Sci-Fi’ and it is, in my opinion, very impressive. There is a lot of contrast in the different tracks which makes it a really good listen. I particularly liked the hard driving ‘Covenant’,the more melodic ‘All Time Low’, and the moody ‘Space Junk’. It seems that Planet Rocks’ Phil Alexander shares my feelings as he’s used the album’s title track as an anchor bed on the radio show ‘Mojo Rocks’. There’s a great promo video of ‘Sci-Fi’ on YouTube or you can download it on www.thesupercalas.com www.espmag.co.uk
