If you’d like to have your say you can do so via an online survey at www.north-westgate.com/publicconsultation. But don’t stop just yet – there’s still more to be done! The Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal continues running until the end of June and the Appeal total hasn’t been reached yet. The fundraising team are busy with a final push for funds. There are plenty of events coming up to get involved in and do your bit to help them reach
The completion of the new 20 bed inpatient unit is the final phase in this £6 million project to provide the region with a state-of-the-art hospice able to provide incredible care for generations to come. Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough, first opened 24 years ago in a 17th century mansion house. Staff have been forced to work around the limitations of the grade 1 listed building ever since. It’s been tough but they’ve done a fantastic job – that’s why so many local people hold it in such high esteem.

MEETING RAY WAS THE SUGAR ON TOP another win. We were friends and after that fight he told me he was struggling to get motivated for his fights, so I suggested a one bout comeback where we would come together in the ring and give fans what they wanted.
That’s it now. I’ve met the ‘four kings’ from what was a glorious middleweight boxing era of the early to mid 1980s and my thanks goes to promoter Kevin Sanders for making it happen. Over the last year or so Kevin’s brought Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and most recently Sugar Ray Leonard to our city and he definitely saved the best until last. Leonard is in most people’s eyes one of the finest pound for pound boxers ever to grace the sport and it’s difficult to make a solid argument otherwise. On meeting him it was pleasing to see he still has all his faculties and it was good to see he still keeps in shape. So many retired boxers have taken one too many blows to the head and it’s easy for your expectations to be dealt their own blow when you get up close and personal with
them. This wasn’t to be the case with Leonard who oozed intelligence and most of all gave an honest and sincere account of his life in and out of the ring. What me and the 300 other fans packed into Radius really wanted to know was just how tough was Marvin Hagler to fight against. Leonard effectively retired Hagler when they fought a closely contested bout in1987 and today the debate continues as to who should have won that memorable showdown. He told us: “Hagler was by far my toughest opponent. I was retired before the fight and was watching him ringside when he scored yet

www.espmag.co.uk
“Marvin agreed and the rest is history. There’s no denying I was a bit apprehensive on the night of the fight, as Marvin was a great champion. But I soon got into my stride and deserved to win. Marvin as we know walked away from boxing that night and despite trying to get in touch with him he won’t give me the satisfaction of a reply. “If I could have one fight again it would be against Marvin, just to silence the doubters once and for all!” Leonard and the other ‘kings’ have agreed in principle to tour the boxing dinner circuit together but getting Hagler to agree is proving to be a challenge. I’m sure Kevin is relishing in trying to make this boxing fans’ dream come true and bring all four champions back to Peterborough in the same room together. Watch this space. Until then four-time world super middleweight champion Carl Froch is the next boxer to grace us with his presence at The Solstice on June 4. For tickets call Kevin on: 07872 601467.
NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL A TASTY BURGER! I’ve been foaming at the mouth since Handmade Burger Co told us they were coming to town and I was literally salivating at my first bite. Absolutely delish! They promised and they’ve delivered as far as I’m concerned because these burgers are the best I’ve tasted outside of north America and believe me I’ve destroyed some burgers in my time in some of the world’s leading burger joints. Every burger imaginable can be freshly made from scratch to your own specific requirements at Handmade Burger Co. The menu is like heaven for burger lovers and that’s why I took an eternity to decide what I was having. I was veering towards the peanut butter and bacon option but having had the crunchy stuff on toast that morning I opted for the avocado and bacon instead. The burger arrived hot (serving food that isn’t hot is a bug bear of mine) and damn it was tasty! It was proper beef and proper filling too. Thankfully I just managed to leave room for chips, which were yummy and plentiful just like chip shop chips and some tasty homemade coleslaw. Dessert escaped me but I could see others tucking into large sundaes that looked divine. A handmade shake is a must on my next visit too – butterscotch all the way – or maybe peanut butter flavour. Big shout to manager Dave Ball (aka Fido Dido back in the Quo Vadis days) who knowledgably catered to our every need and jumped at the chance to pose in some burger porn with me. Handmade Burger Co is an excellent asset to our city and I expect its sun trapped courtyard to be bustling this summer. See you there.

I’ve only averaged about a game a month this season but it’s been emotional: Robbo, Robbo give us a wave!, crusty Yorkshires, gale force wind, coffee and walnut cake, Lenny, bets, Peter Burrow’s carrot, Bruno, painful, new stand, politicians, great scenery, after match coffee with apple giver and dreadlocks in my soup. aking photos on a night out to today’s townie is as trivial as brushing your teeth. But back in the day cameras – let alone phone cameras – on the city centre strip were nowhere to be seen. They were heavy, weren’t designed to fit in your jean pocket or handbag and they were expensive. So why would you even bother taking one out? Well, it’s a good job someone did and that’s yours truly. Wind the clock back to the late 1990s and I can tell you for sure that I was the first townie to regularly hit the scene with a camera in hand. In fact I’d like to think of myself as a pioneer. Nobody at the time took cameras out with them and I can’t even remember any venues employing their own photographers until sometime later. I was effectively telling the stories of hundreds of revellers through a lens and those images (as they still are today) were printed in the ever popular Paparazzi pages of this magazine. Most of my pre-year 2000 images are hard copies, as it was before we splashed out on a digital camera. They’re currently stored away in a shoe box in my old dear’s loft and someday I’ll trawl through them, so they can see the light of day in these pages once again. As for the last 15 years, well, we’ve literally got thousands sitting on the server and the vast majority of those up until about five years ago were taken by me with the help of my assistant lens men Pep ‘zoom in’ Fasulo, Stewart ‘cordial’ Curtis and Tony ‘the priest’ Reppucci. We were single men in our early to mid 20s and having control of that camera was like being in possession of a babe magnet. We didn’t need a chat-up line; the camera did all the introductions for us. Many a girl wandered over just because we had a camera and even more so with the promise of their photo being published in ESP. Every month my editor’s instructions were to come back with around 60 ‘balanced’ (meaning a male and female mix) selection of photos suitable for publishing. Somehow though, 59 of them were of females and the other a group shot of us often taken by doormen (we’d take one of them in return then later delete it!).
PAPARAZZI
Hit a few bars, whip out your phone, take a photo of everyone partying and instantly put it up on Facebook.
After a while though I had to play fair and always made sure both lads and lasses were captured. Still, it was the ladies who had more of a tendency for wanting to be photographed just to show off their new outfits and trendy weekend hairdos. What was great about having that camera was I could go out on my own to a venue I wouldn’t usually frequent and still come back having met new friends and bagged the occasional female phone number. It was also good to see managers and DJs pick up on the importance of that camera, ensuring their revellers were photographed having a good time in their establishment. I’d often get a shout out as soon as I entered a bar and some owners even paid for my first round of drinks in a bid to keep me there longer with the camera.

As I became a regular face on the town scene people would come up to me and say: “Where’s your camera?” (it only came out once a month) instead of perhaps: “Nice shirt Pep” or something equally as normal like: “Have you had a good week Pep?” It was never about me, it was about my camera! They were great times and many a great (lots unprintable) photo was taken and despite our middle page Paparazzi section continuing to be as popular as ever, I look back now and liken that era to the death of disco. There was a Studio 54 vibe around me and my friends with that camera in hand and we were made to feel special wherever we went. Disco eventually died and other music genres captured the masses. A similar thing happened in the camera world where the night scene in Peterborough was concerned. Cameras that fitted in the palm of your hand were being manufactured and all of a sudden they became part of that night out tick box to have on your person along with a packet of fags, wallet and Wrigleys. Then came the camera phone and we were all at it. But like disco, Paparazzi never really disappeared and many a Saturday night fever is still being documented down the lens of an ESP photographer. To the thousands of people I’ve photographed down the years, thanks for the memories and for being part of something that was first and foremost.

PETERBOROUGH G 23- 31 may GREEN The Green Festival organisers would like to thank the continued support of Peterborough City Council in making this fantastic event possible.
“At PECT, the future aim for us is to become the UK’s Environmental Capital, and this will involve the actions and support of every resident and business in the city working together for a greener and cleaner future which will benefit us.” What are Peterborough’s best green credentials so far? “There has been an increase in environmental businesses in the city that are looking to use eco-friendly practices. Peterborough also has one of the highest ratios of green space per person in the UK and is one of the leaders for teaching environmental issues in schools. “There are so many great things happening in the city with our thriving community groups and green spaces such as The Green Backyard, it’s an extremely exciting and encouraging time for the city.”
Tell us more about Greeniversity? “Greeniversity was launched by PECT in 2009 and is a national green Skillshare programme that gives people the chance to teach and learn everything in free sessions from bee-keeping to bike maintenance. “Greeniversity groups have since been popping up across the UK and there are now over 3,000 members with thriving groups running regular classes in Peterborough, Bristol, Manchester and Cambridge. It’s extremely valuable as it helps people to think about the impact of everyday actions by giving them something positive they can do for the environment, gain new skills and meet like-minded people.” How can people make a difference to create a greener and healthier planet? “Small changes can make a big difference and taking the first steps towards thinking about your individual environmental impact is a fantastic starting position. If we all made individual changes then it would help to make a massive impact overall. “People will be surprised how many projects there are that on go in the city and as PECT is a charity, we rely heavily on volunteers to help us carry out our vital work. “The best thing to do is visit www.pect.org.uk for all the information you need to start living a better, happier and greener life!”

TOP 10 TIPS FOR GOING GREENER 1.
Walk or cycle short journeys rather than taking the car. Alternatively, there’s public transport or car sharing. Car sharing to work on a journey of 10 miles will save you and your colleague £250 a year!
2. Why not try growing some of your own food this summer? There are books and websites full of information! 3. Create a wildlife habitat in your garden – leave an area of longer grass or create a log pile. 4. Harvest rainwater from your garden in a water butt. 5. Avoid buying items with excess packaging. Try to reuse or recycle packaging wherever possible. 6. Switch off the lights when you leave a room. Lights left on overnight use enough energy in a year to heat a home for almost 5 months.
7.
Plant drought-resistant plants such as lavender in your garden – this will cut down on the amount of watering needed in the summer months. In addition to this, lavender has the added benefit of being bee and butterfly-friendly.
8. Hold a SWISH clothesswapping event. You and your friends can enjoy the benefits of new outfits, without having the expense or the wastage of throwing old clothes away!

OLYMPIC CYCLING STARS JOIN PETERBOROUGH RACE It’s great to see top class cycling return to Peterborough city centre next month and there’ll be some famous faces there too! Peterborough will host Round Nine of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series, which will be the penultimate event for both the men’s and women’s race series. It’s the sixth year that Peterborough City Council has hosted the event, which sees Britain’s fastest teams racing through the city centre on Tuesday June 9. Among those expected to race will be Olympic Champions Ed Clancy and we may even see Dani King and Laura Trott, plus a host of other top cycling stars. The women’s race gets underway at 5.30pm with the men’s race at 7.30. Highlights of both events will be shown on ITV4 on Wednesday June 10 at 8pm. We’ve been along before and even if you’re not a big cycling fan we can tell you this is still an exciting event to watch. The atmosphere is buzzing as the cyclists whizz through Cathedral Square at high speed!
JOIN THE TOUR OF CAMBS If you’re into cycling don’t miss the Tour of Cambridgeshire – this UK first is being held in Peterborough and will see thousands of riders take to the roads and you could be one of them! You can join in the event yourself or just watch the spectacle from local roads as thousands of cyclists take part. If you’re a cyclist it’s your chance to experience what it’s like to ride a proper continental style closed road race/sportive Gran Fondo. Over 5,000 riders have already entered the 126km Gran Fondo on Sunday June 7 and the organisers have space for up to 10,000 riders in total. The closed road 28km Chrono time trial on Saturday June 6 was an instant hit with all 700 places selling out in less than a week. This is a UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) qualifying event and you’ll be able to see some top class riders in action including Belgian cycling legend and UWCT representative Erwin Vervecken.
Tom Caldwell from organisers Vericool Sports Management says – “The response to the UK’s first ever closed road Gran Fondo and UWCT time trial event has been tremendous. We were overwhelmed at the time trial selling out all 700 places in less than six days and with 5,000 places already taken on the closed road Gran Fondo it goes to show that UK cyclists are keen to sample what a real race/sportive Gran Fondo similar to the format already popular on mainland Europe is like.” Both events will start and finish at the spacious Peterborough Arena with ample free parking on site. A trade village, catering facilities and commentators will help keep all entertained on site over the weekend. The Gran Fondo will start at noon on Sunday June 7 allowing for a more leisurely start to the day for all. For more details and to enter please visit www.tourofcambridgeshire.com
ENTRIES ARE OPEN FOR PERKINS GREAT EASTERN RUN If you’ve set yourself the challenge of taking part in this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run you can enter now and get your training well underway. Peterborough’s excellent half marathon doesn’t take place until October 11, so there’s plenty of time to focus and train for the big day. There are new free training sessions launching in Millfield this year in addition to the usual free weekly training sessions which take place at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track from July. Women-only sessions, with a female coach, will be held 10am until 11am on Wednesdays, starting May 13. Mixed training sessions will be held 7pm until 8pm on Thursdays, starting May 14. Each session will depart from and return to the Beehive Centre, Saint Martin's Street, Peterborough. Organised by the city council, the Perkins Great Eastern Run is one of the best half marathons in the country and saw more than 7,000 people take part in the half marathon and fun run. It was the highest attended Perkins Great Eastern Run since its return to the city’s sporting calendar in 2006! There’s plenty of support for novice runners so why not make this the year you give it a try? It’s a great incentive to get healthier. You can enter online www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk or at the Visitor Information Centre on Bridge Street, Peterborough.

It’s not all happening in the city centre – this month ESP’s Mike Harris took his camera out an about around Market Deeping. Returning for her ninth consecutive year on the judging panel, it could be said that Amanda Holden is the Louis Walsh of Britain’s Got Talent. It could be said, but it won’t be as, whilst the Irish front teeth sucker (get your falsies sorted Lou) trots out the usual “Kettering/Felixstowe/Lewisham (delete as appropriate) will be proud of you” pointless critique, Amanda actually has something to say.
Photo: Alex James
Having performed at the Royal Variety Performance herself, and with a successful career as a singer, actress and presenter, Amanda feels she’s earned her right to remain on the panel as she’s covered every single genre of the business. “Except radio,” she laughs, “I want to be in The Archers!”
amanda Holden
Having kept her seat warm for the last nine years, Amanda has seen lots of changes to the judging line up but admits that she feels the current panel (of her, Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams) is the best yet – “I was really fond of Michael McIntyre but I think David is second to none.” And whilst Simon Cowell appears to encourage and enjoy friction amongst his female colleagues on the X Factor (just think Sharon Osbourne and Dannii Minogue; botox needles at dawn), it’s clear that Amanda, a self-proclaimed ‘girl’s girl’, is having none of that nonsense. “I think Simon hoped [Alesha joining] would be awkward for me, but it’s turned out that we are a sisterhood and strong together. I am really fond of her and she laughs at all my jokes, so double bonus!”
Amanda’s choice of outfits have certainly hit the headlines over the past few years and she’s the first to admit that she hasn’t always got it right. “Oh my God, I have made some heinous mistakes!” she laughs. “I remember the first ever audition, I had no stylist and I wore a blouse and a pair of jeans. When I look back, my top was the wrong way round! It’s a famous clip, it’s the time where we saw Paul Potts! “I’ve worn fishnet tops, bright pink dresses and I’ve got out of a car with my Spanx showing. There have been some hideous things! On This Morning I forgot my nipple covers and Phillip Schofield found them and we played a game of throwing them at the wall to see how long they stuck!”
Hypno dog Princess on BGT
Although she’s ‘been there and seen that’ over the years at BGT, Amanda is really excited about the talent this year. “I like the eccentric acts like a guy who brought on a mannequin wearing a blue ballet dress, or a guy who went round on an organ.” And with acts like a hypnotising dog (who you can see for yourself in person (or dog) at the Solstice Comedy night on May 29) to a girl with a hula hoop that defies gravity and a woman singing about her love for eggs, there’s plenty to keep Amanda coming back for more which is good as she admits she’s prepared to resort to devious tactics to keep her job. “How would I change Simon’s mind? Probably blackmail, threats, and slowly poisoning him, little things like that. I would turn Britain’s Got Talent into Game of Thrones. I’ll be back next year, don’t you worry about that!” And somehow we don’t doubt it! Catch Britain’s Got Talent on ITV on Saturday nights and see Princess the hypno dog at the Solstice Comedy Night on May 29 at Radius above the Solstice. Tickets are £15 (group discounts available) from the venue.

Ever since her famous, “I was back in my size 8 jeans three weeks after giving birth!” quote, I’ve wanted to despise Amanda Holden. Beautiful, Sarah Tempest talented, funny and breaker of Les Dennis’ heart; just how did this annoyingly perfect vision (size 8 jeans? Some of us were barely back in a size 8 shoe) become a bit of a national treasure? All I know is that, whilst I should be drowning in a vat of my own, poisonous jealousy, I still want to share a bottle of Prosecco with her and have a damn good giggle.

TOMORROWLAND Cast: George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie Director: Brad Bird
For every child lucky enough to go to a Disney park – like myself to Orlando multiple times – Tomorrowland was probably the themed area that stands out in memory the most, with the Space Mountain roller-coaster being the pinnacle of attractions. And now – building on ride-based movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, and the rumoured It’s a Small World – acclaimed The Incredibles and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird is bringing this magical land to life for the ‘House of Mouse’.
Written by World War Z, Star Trek: Into Darkness and Lost scribe Damon Lindelof, this sci-fi adventure sees George Clooney star as genius inventor Frank Walker, who crosses paths with curious teenager Casey (Britt Robertson, star of forthcoming Nicholas Sparks romance The Longest Ride), and together they embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of this mystery place that exists somewhere in time and space.

When it comes to Hollywood disaster movies they’re usually more ‘miss’ than ‘hit’ – but with reliable action-man Dwayne Johnson headlining, this could prove to be watchable blockbuster fare. In the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California – so large that the tremors can be heard on the East Coast – a rescue-chopper pilot (Johnson) makes a dangerous journey into the disaster zone in order to rescue his estranged daughter.

SPOOKS: THE GREATER GOOD
THE AGE OF ADALINE
PITCH PERFECT 2
This spy-thriller is just one of several TV-turned-film adaptations due out this summer – US comedydrama Entourage is due out in June – with Peter Firth returning as Harry Pearce for this movie version of the popular British series which ran from 2002-2011. Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington co-stars.
Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively (Savages) stars as a woman who is rendered ageless after an accident at the turn of the twentieth century. But after years of a solitary life, she meets a man (Nashville’s Michiel Huisman) who might be worth losing her immortality for. Harrison Ford co-stars in this romantic-drama.
Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson and co. are back in this Elizabeth Banks-directed sequel to the highly-popular comedymusical. This time the stakes are raised for collegiate a cappella group the Barden Bellas – as they enter an international competition no American team has won before.

AVENGERS – AGE OF ULTRON (12A)
Avengers: The Age of Ultron has just raised the bar once again – with director Joss Whedon managing to craft the best Marvel superhero movie to date. As Marvel’s ‘Phase Two’ of its superhero juggernaut nears to an end (there’s just Ant-Man to follow in July) you have to give immense credit to the consistency of their product. Now they’ve arguably blitzed their whole catalogue with this sequel to the Avengers, with Whedon deserving props for providing equal prominence to a myriad of superheroes by intertwining several plot points – with a satisfying equilibrium of humour and emotion – along with oodles of fan service that will take geeks to Marvel heaven. Throw in the special effects and you have to take a step back and realise how freakin’ hard it is to bring all this together in a two hourplus film – and pull off a darker, more complex, well-crafted film so effectively. So to get the geek bit out of the way, here goes: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Ultron (James Spader), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), The Vision (Paul Bettany), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), Agent Hill (Cobie Smulders), Heimdall (Idris Elba), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Baron Wolfgang von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann), Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis), Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard), HYDRA, SHIELD, more infinity stones, a mid-credit’s (but no end credits) ‘stinger’, back stories for lesser characters like Hawkeye, and the ‘Hulk Buster’ armour – all crammed into one film. When billionaire tech expert Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and nuclear physicist Dr Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) use the power of an infinity stone (attached
to Loki’s scepter) to try and create artificial intelligence in an attempt to create a powerful security army things go awry, and the evil superrobot Ultron (James Spader) is created, with disgruntled superpowered Maximoff siblings Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) by his side. The Avengers then face their toughest battle to date, particularly when Scarlet Witch manipulates some of the team – including Hulk (who is again awesome) being brainwashed which culminates in Tony Stark using the aforementioned ‘Hulk Buster’ armour in one intense action scene – and leaves the group of superheroes in complete disarray. But it’s the balance of the movie (that moves along at a fairly brisk pace with very few lulls) that is one of its endearing qualities, with a truly noteworthy blend of action, humour – see multiple Downey Jr gags and a great Thor ‘hammer’ scene – and surprising sentiment, showcased by Banner and Rominov/Black Widow’s burgeoning relationship. There are some similarities with the first film’s final battle – which might be a bit like déjà vu for some people’s tastes – but several emotive moments during the finale changes the whole face of the Avengers, and sets it up interestingly for ‘Phase Three’, starting with Captain America: Civil War next year – which could include a mid-teen Spider-Man. But one ‘spine-tingling’ pivotal movie-stealing moment undoubtedly comes via a confined amphitheatre, where Ultron (who is a computer-generated marvel by the way) and his multi-hundredstrong army of robots pin the heavily-outnumbered Avengers inside – leading to a slow-motion battle that will make ‘fanboy’ dreams come true. If you’re not a fan of the Marvel universe, feel free to knock a mark off, but Whedon’s ‘vision’ has been so impressively implemented that – coupled with his astounding abilities to piece this blockbuster together – now puts him up there with the industry’s best, as the Marvel multi-billion dollar box-office machine shows no signs of abating.

BATTLEFIELD: HARDLINE (XB1/PS4/360/PS3/PC)
With more than a hint of Miami Vice and Bad Boys, EA has provided possibly the most interesting Battlefield iteration since Bad Company 2 – but is it the best? The easiest way to answer that is down to your personal preference, as the single-player crime-inspired campaign offers the best storyline in quite some time for the series – complete with satisfying stealth-inspired arrests – but new multiplayer additions (grappling hook and zip line for example) may be a bit too innovative for its own good for hardcore fans.
####
But major plaudits need to be thrown at Dead Space developers Visceral for providing a shooter that offers plenty of street ‘smarts’ - therefore, CSI: Battlefield seriously deserves your attention. Bad boys what you gonna do?
MORTAL KOMBAT X (XB1/PS4/360/PS3/PC)
Mortal Kombat has long lived in the shadow of the Street Fighter series, but this tenth iteration provides the most in-depth instalment yet – boasting an impressive roster of fighters, glossy visuals and a silky smooth combat system. You can go old-school as Johnny Cage or Sonya Blade, or even play as a new character like their daughter Cassie Cage (even though you can’t beat Sub-Zero), but it’s the character visuals, long list of moves and of course, the fatalities, which really add the polish.
####
Some character models aren’t up to scratch, and the story mode is only more than passable – but with a combat engine this good who cares. ‘X’ marks the spot for the best next-gen fighting game.
BORDERLANDS: THE HANDSOME COLLECTION (X1/PS4)
If you’ve never played the acclaimed Borderlands 2 or its spin-off Pre-sequel before – then next-gen is undoubtedly the best way to experience it. This smoother and prettier package may seem like a bit of a cash-in – and is arguably a bit pricey if you’ve played both before – but there really is no better way to watch Handsome Jack’s reign and rise to power. Boasting up to potentially a hundred hours worth of sandbox action on Pandora and its moon, this action role-playing shooter includes all campaign add-ons – along with great character customisation.
####
This goes more than half way . . . right beneath the borderline.
DARK SOULS II: SCHOLAR OF THE FIRST SIN (PS4/X1/PS3/360/PC)
Those who feared that the ‘hardest next-gen game TM’ would get easier for its second outing, fear no more . . . it’s still bloody rock hard. The unique old-school action RPG style hasn’t changed dramatically – and its multiplayer might not be quite up to scratch – but this 60 hour-plus game offers difficult, but rewarding, combative gameplay in the sprawling world of Drangleic. Throw in appetising DLC and additional in-game features, then this special edition experience competently expands on Dark Souls lore – despite the frustrating death penalties that will leave you virtually thumping the wall.
####
But working out your enemy is a soul-fulfilling experience.
RIDE (PS4/XB1/PS3/360/PC)
This passionate game is a fascinating step in the right direction for development studio Milestone – with plenty of biking fan service. With more than 100 bikes over four different categories – Superbikes, Supersports, Naked and Historical Bikes – and some very impressive handling mechanics and artificial intelligence, this is one of the best of its ilk if you want to go beyond MotoGP. It’s hampered by some niggling issues – like loading times, odd visual problems and too few tracks – but its customisation options add longevity, which makes this title well worth the ride.
###
BLADESTORM: NIGHTMARE (X1/PS4)
If you’re looking for a uniquely different strategy within the fascinating setting of the Hundred Years War – then this is something well worth sharpening your blade for. It might only be a glossier version of the original game on the 360/PS3 – with some new fantasy-influenced modes and a HD coating – but there’s an endearing quality as your mercenary leads an army of either English or French persuasion.
###
Its progression system is rewarding with the right amount of effort in this tactical hack ‘n’slasher – which has too much charm to be a gaming bad dream.

Local guy Jake Maguire has made it through to the semi finals of new ITV show Ninja Warrior UK after taking on the toughest obstacle course on television! Already a smash hit show in the USA, Sweden, Malaysia and Japan, Ninja Warrior UK is hosted by Ben Shephard, Rochelle Humes and Chris Kamara. It’s billed as ‘the ultimate test of strength, speed and courage’ and Jake is one of 250 competitors who signed up for the show. The 33 year-old security engineer for Brittania Fire & Security in Yaxley competed on the second episode and made it through to the semi finals which will be shown this month. Jake is a big of fan of these type of shows and couldn’t wait to apply when he heard it was being launched here in the UK. Brought up in Stamford but now living in Hampton he’s always been keen on Martial Arts and body building and trains at Premiere Fitness in Hampton and Rhinos gym in Stamford. Contestants from all walks of life ranging from 'Have a Go Heroes' to 'Superhuman Athletes' are invited to take on the challenges of the course.

Jake told ESP – “When I was accepted I watched the American version online and got a little worried as everyone on it is quite athletic and I’m a larger build so I thought I might struggle.
Ninja Warrior
“I was amazed – I did so much better than I expected – it was an amazing feeling getting to the top of the wall and pressing the button! I was more worried about controlling my nerves than tackling the course and was just focussed on trying to compose myself. When it was over it was one of the moments when you think, ‘Did I just do that?’”
The new show saw some contestants like Jake superbly execute the course while others spectacularly failed, crashing out of the course into the water below. Each part is laden with jaw-dropping challenges as the contestants attempt to complete three punishing and potentially hilarious stages. “You only get to see the course when you do it,” explains Jake, “there are no practice runs. You can’t really prepare. “I’ve had such amazing support and feedback – even from people I don’t know. It’s great to see people getting behind you. “I’ve never done anything like this before. It was nerve wracking but a great experience. I’m so pleased I did it. I’ve really got the buzz now to do something more.” Watch the semi finals of Ninja Warrior UK featuring our own local lad Jake Maguire on ITV on Saturday May 16 or May 23 at 7pm. Go Jake!

SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR ASH LEY’S GTR
L
ocal lad Ashley Barham is a very lucky boy indeed. Not only does he work at McLaren where he paints their supercars but he’s also the proud owner of one of the best pound for pound sports saloons money can buy. His 1994 Nissan Skyline R32 GTR is all about grunt, noise and downright speed. The Skyline is a petrol head’s wet dream and the numbers 2.6 twin turbo, straight six and four wheel drive get me very excited too.
Photos: Chris Brudenell
GTR drivers often get labelled with the boy racer tag but Ashley’s quick to put the record straight with me on this one. “We are not all boy racers! My car definitely turns heads, I will admit I do drive hard but only when the road conditions suit and it’s safe to do so. I am planning a few track days this year with NASU Racing and that’s when I can enjoy the car on the limit.
34
www.espmag.co.uk
“Unfortunately there are a lot of stereotypes attached to owning this type of car but for us, and many other enthusiasts we just enjoy meeting up, sharing ideas and making general banter.” Ashley’s love of the GTR is unconditional. The Nissan’s his pride and joy and this means the
car never goes without and is always being modified. He imported the GTR from Japan in 2013 and it’s been putting a huge smile on his face ever since – except for one moment maybe. “Last July at Baston Car & Bike Show my engine let go, resulting in a full bottom end rebuild. A good friend of mine Dean Buxton at Chapel Motors is an expert with Japanese cars and was able to rebuild it and upgrade a lot of the parts. While the engine was out I re-sprayed the whole car in a threestage pearl white, which is the same used in the R35 GTR. I finished it off with the addition of a few carbon fibre bits. “I thought nothing of getting the engine rebuilt and re-painting the car. I’ve always wanted a Skyline from a young age and I love everything about her, so she gets the best treatment. It doesn’t matter what mood I’m in, when I start her up and drive my mood is instantly changed. “Most of my friends are into the car scene and I love nothing more than meeting up with them and going for a drive where we discuss different ideas and plans for our cars. I've made so many friends
through car meets and shows across the UK.” Ashley’s definitely got the love bug for his car and I don’t blame him. I’m always keeping abreast of the latest modifications to be released for my car and only last week I sacrificed my weekly food shop just so I could get a headlight upgrade for her! Ashley’s no different when it comes to investing in his beloved wheels. “A car is never finished once you start tinkering with it. Ideas are constantly evolving and my GTR is still a long way off from being how I want it. She currently stands me at £15k and there’s lots of modifications and upgrades still to make. “Currently she’s running 480bhp with 1.2 bar of boost. She’s been mapped by MGT Racing, with uprated turbos, HKS induction, 3" down pipe, de-cat and cat back. And there’s more to come!” Ashley’s pride and joy has been a worthy addition to this page. As we approach the start of classic car show season around the region I’m delighted to see Peterborough City Council is staging its second Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show. It was the inaugural year in 2014 and approximately 500 vehicles were on display at the weekend show on The Embankment with more than 4,000 people visiting. This year’s eclectic gathering takes place on September 5 and 6 and once again it’ll be free entry for vehicles and the public. It’s a family event, so expect to see dozens of craft and other stalls accompanied by hot food choices and live on stage entertainment. The show is open to classic and vintage cars, motorcycles, scooters, commercial vehicles, agricultural vehicles, buses, military vehicles and practically anything else with wheels! You can register your vehicle on the city council’s website www.peterborough.gov.uk/leisure_and_culture/events_and_festivals/ classic_and_vintage_vehicles.aspx

health and beauty
ESP’s Charlotte Jolly has all the latest health and beauty news…
charlotte.jolly@espmag.co.uk
Go GReen this may As you may already know, it's time for Peterborough's Green Festival again with 2015's event set to be bigger and better than before so take a look at my top Eco beauty products as Go Green approaches (May 23-31). We're all concerned about ingredients such as parabens and synthetic fragrances in our everyday cosmetics and nowadays there are so many green/organic products available we can all afford to be fussy about what we put on our skin and hair. Liz Earle Skin Tonic, £14.50 is one of my everyday essentials and all round brilliant skincare product. Not only does it actually do what it says it's going to; soothe, refresh and brighten your skin but Liz Earle is a brand that's passionate about ethics and using only quality, safe ingredients. They never use genetically engineered ingredients and work closely with their harvesters to ensure they bring you the best plant oils and extracts. This skin tonic includes aloe vera, chamomile and cucumber all of which are naturally active ingredients. I know I'm a fan! Available at John Lewis in Queensgate or online at www.lizearle.com. Neal's Yard Remedies, Bee Lovely Hand Cream, £10, not only helps soften your hands but also helps save the bees. Organic honey is blended with energising orange essential oil to nourish skin and lift the spirits. They believe that beauty should be natural not synthetic which has been at the heart of
their business for over 30 years. They were one of the first companies to raise awareness of natural remedies for skin and body when they opened their 1st shop in Covent Garden. Lily Lolo Mineral Cosmetics produce delicate face and eye powders using pure crushed minerals and no chemicals, dyes or fillers. Best when applied with a Kabuki brush as the bristles are shaped specifically for buffing them into the skin. The minerals, including zinc oxides, have a healing effect on the skin making them ideal for sensitive complexions. In my opinion their best buy is the foundation, £12. It leaves skin looking wonderfully healthy and fresh with a natural coverage. Rumour has it that Denise Van Outen is a fan too! TanOrganic is the world's first and only Eco-certified self tanning brand meaning they use at least 95% natural ingredients, no GMO's, parabens, phenoxyethanol and no testing on animals. Not only do they produce a great range including Self Tanning Oil, £24.99 and a Duo Bronzer £29.99, but they've also just been shortlisted for The Green Product Award in this year’s Green Awards; an Irish based award that celebrates excellence in sustainability and environmental awareness. TanOrganic is the perfect alternative to 'traditional' fake tans due to its organic and natural formula as well as being ethically made. Available at Superdrug, Holland & Barrett or online at www.tanorganic.co.uk. With all these products to choose from you'll be totally organic from top to toe in no time! The future’s bright. The future’s organic!

Are you in need of a good dose of ‘Ecotherapy’? One of the best therapies is literally outside your door; nature provides us with a natural therapy that costs nothing but a few minutes of your time every day.
T
hink about how you feel when you’ve been stuck indoors, or the office, car etc for a good length of time. Apart from the lack of sunlight, fresh air and nature’s energy we may also be exposed daily to the unnatural air conditioning. We also have noise pollution from TV, radio, electrical stuff (think about the fridge or the freezer with its low buzz), people talking, telephones ringing, mobile phone ring tones or text tones, cars, buses, lorries…the list goes on. Without realising it this unnatural way of living may be robbing you of energy and the happy hormones that give us a pick-me-up. Rather we find that low mood, low energy and lack of enjoyment in life are an all too common complaint!
Whilst there are numerous studies that are proving the benefits of nature on our health we don’t need to wait for science to tell us, I’m sure we all know very well how much better we feel being outdoors for a time, even if it is a 15 minute tea break in our day. As kids many of us knew nothing else but being outside for hours on end and then only coming in to get some grub. We would have to be grabbed almost kicking and screaming to come back in the house at night. Today our technological world is robbing our youngsters and many adults of our forgotten green therapy and its benefits. Reconnection to nature is a reconnection to ourselves and nothing in our technological world
‘...I’m sure we all know very well how much better we feel being outdoors...’ Being in nature whether taking a walk, gardening, sitting on a bench, walking on sand or in the woods, forest, a local park or sitting in awe of a mountain range may help us to reduce our fight or flight stress hormones, calm our nervous system, clear our thinking, lift our self-esteem and much more.

True Grit... and sand! Hats off to him, this guy’s got some bottle!
D
arren Grigas from Thorney has been a familiar face in ESP modelling on our fashion pages, but 11 months ago he set himself the challenge of completing the toughest footrace on earth, the Marathon des Sables (MdS). He’s done it and raised more than £17,000 for Stamford based charity Anna’s Hope in the process. Listening to Darren tell us all about this toughest of adventures, all we can say is – respect! To us it sounds like 156 miles and six days of sheer hell. Try sleeping in the desert on a rug thrown over rocks in an open tent with the sand and wind whistling through, then running for hours with sleep deprivation and blisters, tackling uphill climbs, trudging through sand dunes all in scorching temperatures then followed by the cold and dark. “The lowest point was being completely drained, in total blackness, 53 miles in on the longest day with still another hour to go,” Darren recalls. “I hit the wall and was literally staggering and crawling and had to use an energy gel which was for the next day just to get through – but there was never a question of not finishing, even then.” Just a few days prior to leaving for the MdS Darren’s friend and colleague at the web design company he works for had sadly passed away and the thought of Jamie, as well as little Anna Hughes (the little girl that Anna’s Hope was launched in memory of) watching over him, really helped spur him on at that low point. He finally came a very respectable 151st out of around 1,330 joining an elite band of ‘ultra runners’ to complete this truly gruelling challenge. Nearly a hundred didn’t finish at all but we never doubted Darren would see it through as we’d watched him grow ever more determined over the past year.
Trained by Rory Coleman, who was also supporting the renowned explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes to complete the race for Marie Curie, Darren shared a tent with the guys and says it was the experience of a lifetime. “I can’t really pin down one best bit it was just such an incredible experience. “It’s so much more than just running. The whole experience is really, really tough but amazing. At the end of a long day watching Ranulph make it over the finish line was a big relief each time and great to see him do it and be OK. He’s such a humble guy.” Since Darren returned he’s been given a hero’s welcome, often by people he doesn’t even know. Sporting his Marathon des Sables finisher’s T-shirt and medal he’s even stopped by a jogger keen to shake his hand while we take some photos. “I guess the biggest gain for me has been the mental strength, knowing you really can do it. The ripple effect of this is what’s been truly rewarding though. “All the messages of support, the sense of pride and people telling me I’ve inspired them has all been pretty overwhelming. What’s made it worth it is what it’s done for others rather than just for me personally. It was my challenge to start with but the fundraising has gone on to help Anna’s Hope and other kids and raise awareness of the charity, local businesses have gained promotion, people – even some I don’t know – have been telling me I’ve inspired them to change. It’s all really humbling.”

Carole Hughes from Anna’s Hope told ESP – “One of the benefits in running a charity in addition to making a positive difference to the lives of others is the amazing people you meet who want to help the charity. Darren is one of those amazing people. “On behalf of Anna's Hope we want to thank Darren for his fantastic contribution to the charity and thank all those who sponsored and supported him. Every penny will go to funding the Anna's Hope Therapy Team which is part of a pioneering new service called Brainbow that provides neuro rehabilitation for children in the region with a brain tumour.” You’d think he’d be kicking back with a beer but we fear Darren’s just getting started! “I’m looking forward to not having to run 70 miles a week but I won’t be stopping. I’m already signed up for the Rat Race Dirty Weekend and will be doing the course twice, I'll be running 69 miles in a day the length of Hadrian's Wall in a few weeks time, my biggest ever run. Then I have a 180 miles cross country bike ride in July and the RideLondon-Surrey 100.” Watch out Bear Grylls we reckon our guy’s gunning for your slot!

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY TOPICAL Well what an election campaign it's been. Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right and here I am stuck in the middle of having to come up with something vaguely satirical about it. I think my favourite moments during the election campaigns have been when the leaders of the respective parties try and make a joke in an attempt to prove they're one of us. Nigel Farage started his UKIP party political broadcast a few weeks ago by borrowing a Monty Python catchphrase – ‘And now for something completely different’. Only, it wasn't because he wasn't dressed up in women's clothing or as a lumberjack, or even as Mr Creosote. He still had his normal grey pinstriped suit on and was sat behind a desk, rather than doing a silly walk along the British border at Dover to keep everyone out but his foreign wife. Plus if old Nige was such a massive fan of Monty Python, then he would've insisted that at least one of the televised leader debates would’ve been conducted like the 'Four Yorkshiremen' sketch with them all sitting around in big wicker chairs, smoking cigars and trying to outdo each other, which let's face it would be a lot more entertaining then seeing them stand uncomfortably behind a lectern. Of course, there's another famous Monty Python sketch I'd like to see them take part in and that's the 'Fish Slapping Dance'. Who can honestly say they wouldn't secretly like to lightly slap Cameron, Milliband, Clegg and Farage in the face with two small pilchards three or four times before clobbering them with a large halibut?
EXCLUSIVE TO MOSTLY FUNNY READERS
The Fracas In Yorkshire Novelty Plate It was the news story that gripped the nation. A man off a telly programme about cars who everyone had heard of, punching a man who worked behind the scenes on the telly programme about cars who nobody had heard of. It divided the country, but now in an attempt to cash in… sorry, sorry I mean reunite those affected, the Mostly Funny Heritage Range is pleased to announce the release of 'The Fracas in Yorkshire' (pronounced fracar in yorkshar) novelty plate. The plate comes already pre-split (much like the TV producer’s lip) and is tastefully
decorated. One half featuring a nice big juicy steak and the other half adorned with a large portion of chips (both of which we can confirm were cooked in a restaurant after 10pm). Each half of the plate features double denim decal trim on the outside edges and is yours to own for the mouthwatering price of just £9.99. Serving suggestion: Hot meats and hot carbohydrates. Disclaimer: Please note this plate is NOT suitable for serving cold food of any kind eg: sandwiches or cold meat platters. Any attempt to serve anything but hot food is likely to send people into a uncontrollable rage that will result in them losing their job.

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Neil Gilby brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…
Barry Fry, a man who has over the course of 55 years been a player, manager, chairman, owner and now Director of Football. The guy lives and breathes the game in every sense, but on turning the big 70, has the boy from Bedford mellowed with age, and does he now intend to put his feet up? I spoke to the man himself exclusively for ESP… Why did it not work out at Manchester United?
Photo: Joe Dent / www.theposh.com
“I think a lot of the media tried to create a story that the reason I failed as a player was because of Sir Matt Busby and that he didn’t look after me properly, but there is only one reason that I didn’t make it at Manchester United and that is Barry Fry.
Barry and Neil celebrate Firstly, congratulations on your 70th birthday, have the years flown by? “Certainly. I was football mad all throughout my school life and I was very fortunate to play for the Bedford and District School and of course London schools. I represented England schoolboys six times and scored five times. One of those goals came at Wembley Stadium in front of 95,000 people when we beat Scotland 5-3.” You’ve been in the game for over 55 years now, would you ever have thought you’d have such longevity in football? “I was a player for 15 years, a manager for 31 years and DOF for the last nine, it is unbelievable really. I’ve loved football since I was a real nipper. The first team I ever supported funnily enough was Wolverhampton Wanderers and the reason behind that choice is when I was nine-years-old they were the first team to be on television so they were the first side that I saw. Billy Wright was my favourite player. Later on in life, I met Bill and as he was my idol it was quite unbelievable. I was filling my car up at the petrol station in Barnet and he parked alongside me and walked over to say hello. I was so shocked I spilled petrol everywhere. “I remember that when I left school, all I wanted to do was play football and after playing for England schoolboys, I had a lot of clubs after me. I went up to Manchester and United invited me and my parents there for three days. Nobby Stiles

was the captain of the youth team and I travelled with the team. Nobby sold me Manchester United. He had so much passion and commitment for that club. There was only one team that I wanted to sign for. It was a big wrench to leave Bedford though. My parents were so supportive of me. They sacrificed a lot for me. I served my apprenticeship at Manchester United and then Sir Matt Busby, the boss at Old Trafford, told me I had unbelievable potential and offered me a full-time contract at the club. I joined in 1960 and signed that pro deal in 1962.” What was it like meeting Sir Matt Busby and how did the Munich Air Disaster affect not just Manchester United, but you personally? “It was two years after the Munich Air Disaster when I joined the club and it was a strange atmosphere. Nobody can ever imagine what a disaster like that can do to people. The football club was rebuilding at the time. It was a difficult place, but a wonderful place. Sir Matt Busby was a brilliant person. He commanded so much respect. I like to think in my managerial career, I had his philosophy. He encouraged players to go out and express themselves. He relaxed you. He was brilliant with George Best, he handled him great. He was a fatherly figure. I don’t think you appreciate those times; I look back on it fondly. That club treated you like Kings. It’s not until you leave that you realise just what you had.”
“At first I was dedicated – once I signed pro I was jumping in people’s cars and going to the races and the dogs and going to nightclubs. It was my fault. I don’t blame anyone but myself. That’s why when I entered into management, I wanted to pass on that experience that I gained from the mistakes that I made. Being a player is such a short career, you have to make the most of it.” You’ve had many roles in football from a player to a manager, from a manager to an owner and from an owner to a Director of Football, what’s been your favourite period in the game? “No doubt about it, playing is the best. Unfortunately, my career as a player was cut short due to injury. I count myself lucky to have been in football for so long. Every role has been a challenge but I love every single second of it. I can’t wait to get up in the morning and get into work.” Now that you’re 70, would you say you’ve mellowed? “Oh God yes, I have six kids of my own and seven grandchildren and I have a great grandchild. I must admit I was a workaholic. I wasn’t a good Dad, I wasn’t about, I was always working. I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren. I love it. It’s also sad though that I didn’t give that much time to my own kids. I’ve always been a provider and felt that was my responsibility.” Being owner of a football club, was that a lifetime ambition or a big mistake? “If I am honest, and I mean brutally honest, it is a bit of a regret looking back. I was hugely fortunate that I was able to get out thanks to Darragh MacAnthony, but I should not have jeopardised my wife and
my kids’ future by hocking my homes, taking my pension early, putting my testimonial against Manchester United into the football club and putting my mother-in-law’s deeds into the bank to enable me to have an overdraft. I shouldn’t have put my family at risk. I did it all because of my love of football. That was totally wrong of me. Trust me, there aren’t many women who would have stood by me after that, in fact I don’t think there is another one out there. We got out of jail and we always seem to, but looking back, it leaves a sour taste. I know that I saved Peterborough United and it makes me very happy to see them flourishing now.” How did you meet Kirstine (your wife)? “I was married before for 13 years, we had two kids together Mark and Jane, but we split up because of football. I would always put football first, the family lived in Bedford and I was living in Dunstable and it was whilst I was over visiting my kids that I first met Kirstine. When I asked her out, she said, you can’t, you are married. We were living apart at the time, myself and Anne and to be fair to Anne, she spoke highly of me but said I was addicted to football. Kirstine is different, she comes with me to games, she would wash the kit, cook the lads their dinner. She doesn’t know anything about football mind, she listens to music while the games are on. Kirstine is my best ever signing there is no doubt about that.” Do you ever see yourself retiring from football? “No, definitely not. I might get the sack! Myself and Darragh have a great understanding and I am grateful that he kept me on when he came into the club. I like to think I’ve repaid him. When he done the deal he recognised I was an asset to the football club. I love my life as it is, I love going to games and if for whatever reason, Darragh wanted to part the ways, I would stay in football but my lasting ambition is to see Peterborough as an established Championship club. Whatever happens I have had a fantastic time in football.”

INTRODUCING… Adam Smith of Rhythm Districk What’s your background in the scene?
What’s the vibe and crowd like?
“I've been DJing for some time now and it all started when I won the DJKO Competition at the legendary Cafe En Seine in Peterborough.”
“We have a crazy crowd with lots of regulars and people travelling in from adjoining towns and cities to Stamford. The vibe is fun, down to earth and people tend to rock up straight to the dance floor and not leave till closing.”
What can we expect at your nights music wise? “Rhythm Districk focuses on the funkier end of house music traversing different sub-genres such as disco, house, tech & deep house, lively and upbeat tempo and vibe with lots of funk, tough beats and baselines.“

What have been the highlights so far? “We’ve made some good friends along the way and I’m now excited to be joining forces with the Solstice / Solgarden,
which, in my view, is Peterborough’s most diverse and probably best venue. I can't wait to get on the decks there.” What do you think of the current scene? “The scene is the strongest it’s been in years, with some great characters and a variety of styles of music within the house spectrum. Venues that were previously commercial are now taking on credible house events and DJs which is great to us house heads and new people discovering the scene.”

The 13th Bourne Festival takes place on the weekend of June 5 - 7. Organised by Bourne Round Table, the festival’s proven to be a really popular social event for the area. There’s a fairground on site and plenty of food to add to the 80 real ales and 25 ciders to choose from, and a huge list of live music for you to see. The event starts on Friday evening at 7pm with music from Vigilantes, Albion and Walkway. Saturday starts at midday with a very impressive line up: Undercovered followed by Mullered At The Mill, BRM, The Brays, Afterlife, Clutchin' At Straws, Revolver and Violet Cities.
What a popular band the Motor City Vipers are. And it’s easy to understand why! I saw them play to a huge audience recently at The Brewery Tap. The 8 piece band just pump out some massive classics from all corners of the soul genre. And the quality of their performance is extremely high, not to mention professional as at the Tap gig, they had to contend with a dodgy sound desk which interfered with their high quality vocals. It must be very distracting to have to contend with that sort of problem but they carried on and eventually the sound was
sorted out. What a brilliant night. That gig was performed for the Sue Ryder Charity and they have another very deserving charity benefiting from their gig at The Solstice on Saturday July 4. That is SANDS (the Stillbirth charity) and as most of the soul performed by the band comes from the USA, it’s appropriate that the gig is on American Independence Day. MCV dates sell out fast, so If you want tickets for the Motor City Vipers at the Solstice on July 4 call 01733 560231.
Sunday also starts at midday and features Outlaw State, Abel Raise The Cain, Molly's Chamber, Bullit Tooth, The More I See, Maxwell, Hammer & Smith, The Rocket Dogs and finishes at 10pm with Smith & Sons. Judging by previous years the Bourne Festival has grown each year and camping facilities are being made available by the local Rugby club for those who wish to sample the whole weekend. The North Street Bar is a great venue, particularly late night weekends and on Saturday May 23 they feature a live performance from the increasingly popular and acclaimed Jessie’s Ghost. The 5 piece band from Kings Lynn play mainly acoustic pop and folk and are highly in demand. They’re sure to once again pack out North Street Bar with their acoustic band set and with free admission on Saturday May 23 at 11pm, so I suggest you arrive early.
For over 30 years, Bon Jovi have been a massive presence on the music scene. And for half that time Bon Giovi (great name!) have established themselves as one of the world’s leading tribute bands to the U.S. rockers. During that time they’ve established a huge fan base and have toured a large part of the world and we have a chance to see the power of a Bon Giovi performance as they appear at the Cresset in Bretton on Wednesday May 27. The band cover every aspect of Bon Jovi’s extensive career – from the greatest hits such as Living On A Prayer, It’s My Life, Bad Medicine, Always and Wanted Dead or Alive through to rare tracks that Bon Jovi haven’t performed for many years. Fronted by rock vocalist Andrea Ojan, Bon Giovi recreate the real experience of a live Bon Jovi show performing their huge catalogue of songs with energy and authenticity. So if you’ve missed the limited opportunity to see Bon Jovi this could be the closest you’ll get to the real thing! For tickets, call the Cresset box office on 01733 265705.

More advance ticket news for a very popular annual event. And this unfortunately will be the last ever Steamin’ Blues at The Nene Valley Railway on Saturday June 13. It started in 2000 and was the brainchild of Hannah Forman, now the General Manager at the railway, and her brother, internationally renowned bass guitarist, Colin Hodgkinson. Colin’s recently returned from America where he performed with his current band Ten Years After alongside Alice Cooper and The Doobie Brothers on a Monsters of Rock cruise around the USA and Caribbean. Over time the format for the evening’s remained unchanged – a steam-hauled train with a bar picks up passengers from the stations along the Nene Valley line and transports you to Wansford Station to a marquee where there’s a real ale bar and food.
Over the years, Colin has been the constant and has brought along many of his friends from the music world. Guests have included Zoot Money, Maggie Bell (formerly Stone the Crows), and Dave Kelly (formerly Blues Band). The line-up for this year so far confirmed includes newcomer Marcus Bonfanti, the amazing lead guitarist from the band that Colin's currently playing with – Ten Years After. Also playing will be drummer Paul Robinson whose career includes many years with Nina Simone and stints with Van Morrison and Eric Bibb. Old Steamin' Blues favourite Zoot Money will be back and saxophonist Rod Mason. Despite them booking an extra large marquee it’s almost sold out so if you haven’t been before this is your last chance! For tickets call 01780 784444.

That rock ‘n’ roll eh? Despite a smattering of tabloid journalists announcing the demise of ‘guitar music’, it keeps rearing its wellstyled head to wreak havoc upon stages across the country. One band who’ve made a career of smashing stages and delighting audiences are called Young Guns. On the cusp of releasing their third album Ones and Zeros and with a headline UK tour scheduled next month, complete with a stop at The Cresset in Peterborough on Monday June 1, they’re ready to get back to flying the flag for rock music. ESP’s Alex Jones caught up with drummer Ben Jolliffe during their tour in the US to talk about the new album, the new tour and why a depressed astronaut is a perfect choice for an album cover… So you’re currently coming to the end of a US tour and heading back here, and your third album Ones and Zeros is out next month. You’ve released a few tracks already including one of my favourite songs at the moment, Daylight, how was the recording process for the album this time round? “It was crazy actually, it was the first time we had a lot of time to actually put together a record and try different ideas. Some of the songs we had written in New York two years ago, we wrote a few in San Francisco, some on tour and some back home in London, so each song has its own time, place and story. “We didn’t rush things, we wanted to make sure we got it right and that every decision we made was valid. With our last album Bones, it was a bit rushed and even though we were aware we’d been away a while, we had belief in the songs and wanted to make them sound as big as possible. We didn’t want a Bones part two, we wanted to push ourselves.”
The cover art for the new record is great as well, the distraught astronaut, why did you select that image? “We had so many different ideas, originally, you know, the album’s called Ones and Zeros so we thought, should we go down the binary code route? But we didn’t want to do something so obvious, and then Craig saw that image online somewhere, and it turns out it was a sculpture. “For me it evokes a feeling of emptiness, it’s this big empty room with this astronaut looking slightly deflated, it really makes you think. If nothing else, we wanted the cover to be striking and that image certainly gets your attention.” You’re returning to the UK next month and playing The Cresset, what can your fans expect in terms of songs, will they get a lot of new material? “It’s tough. When we used to go to shows we’d always moan at the bands that would play too much new material, because fans want to hear their favourites. Obviously we’ll play the new tracks that everyone will have heard, the new single for example, but it’ll be a good mix of old and new. “We always try and get tracks in the set from every album. We’re looking forward to playing the new stuff, but the older tracks are still great to give a run out as well.” Young Guns third album Ones and Zeroes is released Monday June 8. The band play the Cresset on Monday June 1, you can purchase tickets from www.cresset.co.uk. Read our full interview with Young Guns on www.espmag.co.uk. Alex Jones
