The ride starts from 9am at Rutland Water and follows the perimeter of the famous reservoir. Entry is £10 adults, £5 children and £25 for a family.

JOEY’S COOKING ON GAS! Joseph Valente is a man who needs no introduction. Winning last year’s TV show The Apprentice has opened up a whole new world for him and his Yaxley-based business Impra Gas is already reaping the benefits of a £250k investment from Lord Sugar. Impra Gas clients now include big businesses such as Nestle and Corgi and he’s now recruiting for extra staff, but this is just the beginning for the former Stanground College pupil who has an ambitious five-year plan to scale the heights of a multi-million-pound turnover. I had plenty to talk to our Joey about but the most pressing question couldn’t wait… Joey, first of all, can you come round and fix my leaking tap? “Of course! Visit www.Impragas.co.uk and book one of our highly trained plumbers.” Done! So, it's been six months since your win, how has the £250k helped you to grow your business during this time?
Photos: Andy Vernum @ Studio One
“Since the start of the year, our focus as a business has been to offer a five-star experience to our customers. This has prompted us to invest heavily in our management
14
infrastructure, allowing us to put the right team in place to build a solid foundation to carry this out. We now operate a job watch scheduling and management system allowing us to streamline our booking, work completion and invoicing process. We now also have a number of fantastic new vans, smart new uniforms for staff and a new website. Our head office is having a makeover too.” So what level of involvement has Lord Sugar had up to this point?
“Lord Sugar’s involvement is controlled by how much I need him, but he's always at the other end of the phone or an email. As a minimum, we have a monthly board meeting, but other than that he leaves me to get on with it on a dayto-day basis, as I know what I’m doing, so it works well.” Has being The Apprentice winner lived up to your expectations? Do you feel pressure? “It's been an amazing experience; quite literally a life changing one and
I’ve loved every day. I’m working harder than ever, but if you want to be successful then you have to. For me, pressure is a driver. It pushes me further and is a great motivator.” Are you a different person in any way? “I have a lot more confidence in meetings and feel like I can hold my own in most business situations. When someone like Lord Sugar believes in you, it gives you a great confidence boost and it’s a great feeling.”
Did you consider anyone to be a threat and did you at any time think Vana’s business idea was going to win it? “I thought Richard was a very strong contender. He was an acquired taste but he was good. I wasn’t worried about Vana’s idea, as I had so much confidence in mine.”
Joseph at his Yaxley-based business Impra Gas
But people must treat you differently I guess? “Overall, people have been unbelievably supportive. I really appreciate this and it’s great to see – especially from my fellow Peterborians! But for all the supporters you sometimes have your critics and this goes with the territory, which I embrace in a positive way.” So what was it like meeting with Lord Sugar as his Apprentice for the first time? “It was surreal! Sitting in his office as his new business partner planning how we were going to drive the business forward was a strange feeling, but from that point, I knew that's where I was meant to be and it felt great.” Let’s look back at your journey. In the lead-up to the show producers tried to create a picture of you based on your application bravado. Were you initially concerned how you may have come across to Lord Sugar and the viewers at home? “Not really. I knew people would judge me in a certain way because of the things I said in my application, as well as the way I looked. But as a result, people initially underestimated my ability to win.” At what point or after which task did you feel you became a serious contender for the win? “I honestly felt I was a serious contender from the day I applied. I think the moment both the viewers and Lord Sugar started to consider me was in task six, the construction task, during which I won immunity.” Did you ever feel out of your depth or intimidated by any of the contestants? “I didn’t feel out of my depth as such, but there were a number of occasions where I felt uncomfortable, given that some of
What was it like watching yourself on TV? Would you have done or said anything differently? “I absolutely loved it! I’ve always loved being centre of attention and that hasn’t changed. It all felt natural to me even though on occasion I came out with some lines that were a little cringe-worthy!” Why do you think producers picked you to be on the show? “I’m a character – loud, confident, with an individual look and hopefully because they saw me as a potential winner. I’ve got a great background story too, which helps.” Did you take advice from anyone before filming began? “My mum, she told me to go for it.”
Your performance in the interviews with Lord Sugar's advisers looked like a walk in the park. Was it that easy for you? “It may have looked easy, but rest assured, it was tough! I’m very confident in what I’m capable of and I work well under pressure. My philosophy is if you’re honest from day one then you don’t have to worry. It’s always the ones that play with the truth who suffer the most in the interviews.” What did you learn about yourself and business after going through the process? “The main thing I learnt was that I’m tough, dynamic, relentless, hardworking and that I can succeed in anything as long as I work hard to get it. The sky is the limit and we’re victims of the limits we set for ourselves.” So, looking ahead have you fulfilled your ambition or is there still plenty you want to achieve? “The Apprentice was just one (albeit a huge) stepping stone on my road to success. Watch this space as there's a lot more to come!” What advice would you give to anyone thinking of applying for the show? “Ensure you stand out, fly straight, don’t get dragged into pointless arguments and only talk when you have something important to say.”

the business situations I found myself in were new to me. However, I’m a strong believer in the 'sink or swim' philosophy and I wasn't prepared to drown.”
IT’S ALL GO FOR NURUN TOO… Two years have flown by since Nurun Ahmed became Peterborough’s original representative on The Apprentice and she’s still flying high.
Nurun continues to get recognised by hardcore Apprentice fans and she’s got her hands full in more ways than one. I caught up with Nurun who brought me up to speed. “The biggest change in my life since being on The Apprentice is that I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in January this year but it hasn’t stopped me being mega busy on the work front! I’ve launched my premium matrimonial site for professional British Bangladeshi's, XclusivelyTumi. “I’m also currently working on my website – The Nurun Ahmed Collection (clothing line), which I delayed in launching last year, as I wanted to be in the position to offer something different. Timing in business is crucial and I’ve now repositioned the product. “I’m targeting busy mums whose appearance is still important to them and want stylish, comfortable and affordable clothing. The product range will also include accessories, homeware and of course, scarves! I intend to launch the website by the end of May.”

he Nene Outdoors watersports centre at the lakeside centre at Ferry Meadows now has some exciting new additions for the summer.
Nene Park continues to flourish under Nene Park Trust’s care which as an independent charitable trust, receives no funding from central or local government and is totally reliant on any income they generate themselves.
The wide range of sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing is all still available but now there’s a fleet of pedalos including some fabulous swans set to gracefully take to the water. Facilities include the recently refurbished café and conference room
Now managed by Nene Park Trust with Dan Wallace and his team heading up operations, the watersports activities will be showcased at a Fun Day on Sunday May 22 between 11am and 3pm when there’ll be various taster sessions. It’s been another busy month in my world of food and it appears that once again the theme is all international, international and international! American diners seem to be taking Peterborough by storm along with new eateries adding to a vibrant food community in our city.
PAPA LUIGI PIZZA TIME! I’m a fan of pizza as I may have said once or twice. I like it as much as chocolate Dutch waffles which my ever expanding waistline is now starting to show! I’m also a fan of our screen guy Gavin Miller’s column so I thought I’d combine the two and head on down to Papa Luigi on London Road to see just how good their ESP offer really is. I also found out how to toss pizza dough and yes you guessed, I ate some pizza too! It turns out pizza making is a pretty skilful process and throwing it in the air is a whole lot harder than it looks. It’s all in the arm and wrist action! I loved catching up with Frank and his team at Papa Luigi and I wasn’t surprised to learn that everything is served fresh and with a big pinch of Italian love and their ESP Screen Scene Mega Movie Meal Deal offer is even more impressive in real life. For just £14.95 you’ll get any 12” pizza, two side orders and one 500ml tub of Haagen-Dazs – the perfect accompaniment to a night in. Order yours on 01733 895555. Thanks Papa Luigi, it was a fun few hours and I thoroughly enjoyed my ESP pepperoni pizza as did the editor, and my mum.

TRY THE CHAI COMMUNITY CAFÉ Chai on Eastfield Road is the place to be for all things quirky, community, cool and most of all tasty! The brainchild of city councillor Nabil Shabbir, Chai is a family run coffee shop, ice cream parlour and art gallery that not only serves up the most amazing waffles I’ve seen, (even the Amsterdam waffles seemed tame in comparison) but also believe in giving back to the local community and for those that know me, this is always a winner in my eyes. Their Chai Life Foundation ticks the local and international box when it comes to giving back and they’re asking for community groups to get in touch and apply for up to £200 to help with projects. You can contact Nabil for more details or pop into the coffee shop on Eastfield Road. Now, let’s get back to food. Those
waffles are seriously sinful but seriously delicious. I tried the ‘peanutter’ which as the name would suggest was a peanut butter sensation. They also serve up cold brew coffee, chai teas and a whole host of other tasty treats, all organic and fairtrade where possible. The décor is all supported by local artists and is a real mishmash of cool and quirky interiors. So if you want somewhere hip, cool, kind and tasty, Chai is the place to be.
Food News LOCAL CHEF LEE CLARKET OPENS NEW RESTAURAN
ESP love a success story and it’s great to hear that Lee Clarke – the former head chef of the popular city centre restaurant Clarkes – is branching out to Priestgate in Peterborough with the opening of his new restaurant, Prévost. Set in the former Flyers Club, Lee told me: “The opportunity arose to make the dream of owning my own restaurant a reality, and I’m hugely excited. I want the Prévost experience to have an air of fine dining but without the formality; diners can expect an exploration of taste that’s quintessentially British but full of surprises.” Good luck to Lee and his team. We’re sure it’ll be a huge success and will be another great addition to the vibrant food scene in the city.
ED'S EASY DINER DISHES UP A SLICE OF 50's AMERICANA I’d like to say a big thanks to our comedy guy Steve whose been a great food journo also checking out new eateries this month. He took a visit to the new Ed’s Easy Diner at the A605 Haddon Services and told me: “At Ed’s you can either relax at a booth or table or sit on a stool at the counter that's equipped with a traditional ‘Dime-Selector’ juke box and select your favourite hits from the 1950’s. In the tradition of all the classic American diners you can also see your food being freshly prepared in the open kitchen. Whilst there we tucked into a mouthwatering Route 66 burger with atomic fries and a delicious ice cream Coke float but the vast menu has something to suit every taste, including gluten free”. Thanks again Steve! It looked like you had a great time and the food looks delicious!

Sarah Tempest
ESP’s Sarah Tempest catches up with singer Gareth Gates ahead of his show at The Cresset celebrating the musicals… Chairs at Empty Tables.” Let’s just hope Bretton Sainbury’s have stocked up on tissues! Gareth is a qualified McGuire Method speech coach, after learning the method to successfully manage his own stammer and he’s now a successful entrepreneur with his own performing arts academies.
I
t’s incredible to think that it’s 15 years since the nation took a certain spiky haired young singer with a stammer to their hearts but, despite not winning, Gareth Gates has come a long way from Pop Idol runner up. And now, the star his heading to Peterborough as he performs in his latest show, Mad About The Musicals at The Cresset and admits he’s very excited by the prospect!
“I first did the show last year and we had so much fun, we decided to do it all over again!” he laughs, clearly looking forward to it. “It’s a brilliant show, perfect for any lover of musical theatre as we feature some of the most loved songs from shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and more modern shows too.” But Gareth insists the show is not just for dyed in the wool fans of
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Michael Ball, “There’s a great mixture of music with pieces from the 1950s right up to a section from We Will Rock You so, really, it’s great for music lovers of all ages.” But the diversity of the music brings its own challenge, particularly as Gareth had to have surgery on his vocal chords at the end of last year. “Changing your voice to sing the different styles of songs can be really challenging but it’s like any athlete, you have to practice and warm up properly and, thankfully, I’m fine now.” And it’s a good job because there’s one song he’s particularly looking forward to performing; “I did Les Mis five years ago and that show particularly holds lovely memories for me so I’m particularly looking forward to singing [the super emosh] Empty
So with his business interests and his back to back musical career (he’s coming out of Footloose, into Mad About The Musicals and back into Footloose before opening in panto later this year, phew!), how does he find time for his six-year-old daughter Missy and girlfriend Fay, especially as she’s currently starring as Kate Connor in Corrie. “It’s not easy, but you make it work,” he says. “I see my daughter lots and lots and she’s constantly on the road with me too. She’s showing real signs of following in my footsteps; she’s all singing all dancing!” But he laughs at suggestions that romantic evenings with his girlfriend are now meeting at motorway service stations, gazing at each other over a microwaved Ginsters. “We’re slightly more glamorous than that! It helps that her Corrie schedule is only five days a week so she comes to me wherever I am and we spend any time off together.” Mad About The Musicals is coming to The Cresset on Friday May 20. bar from the side of the boat. Whilst I was in motion and focussing on not face-planting the water Arran continued to shout across to me to correct my position where necessary and then we stopped for a quick pep-talk before setting off on the return leg of the lake, so far so good! There’s a big ramp in the water for the more experienced skiers, I’d love to tackle it one day but for now I was happy enough just standing up, maybe next time hey?
Just down the road from Stamford and Peterborough is the hidden gem Tallington Lakes Leisure Park. Nestled in landscaped woodland surroundings are 205 acres of fresh water lakes for sports enthusiasts, holiday makers, kids parties, hen and stag groups or just a chilled fun family day out. I recently went over and tried my hand at a bit of water skiing on one of the five lakes and am pleased to say I wasn’t too shabby! I donned a snug wetsuit and life jacket provided by the park, they’ve got kit to lend but also have a huge 500sqm pro-shop full of kit for all sorts of sports for anyone wanting to buy their own. I was already suited up so headed to the water’s edge for a briefing from my driver and instructor Arran. He was a top chap and talked me through every step of how to get into the water, hold the bar, stand up correctly and hopefully stay upright. He didn’t need to instruct me on posing for the camera, I had that nailed already. The water was a bit nippy when I first got in but once on the go adrenalin kept me warm enough. I started with a few laps of the lake hanging onto a

I came off once as I bounced over a wake behind the boat on a bend, the rope slackened, then it pulled tight and was plucked from my hands. Lesson learned! After my final lap I doggy-paddled my way to the edge, quickly wriggled out of my wetsuit and dunked myself into the steaming hot tub at the

waterside. That was a real treat to finish with, I could have stayed in there for ages with a nice drink from the lakeside bar and restaurant just a few feet away. There’s so much more to do at the park including land based activities like rock climbing and skiing too so I’ll definitely be returning with family and friends to have a crack at everything else on offer.

Meghan Trainor Already lined up for the Radio 1 Big Weekend it’s set to be a busy year for Meghan Trainor as she’s back with new material but with the same feisty attitude in her songs!
M
eghan’s followed up the body positive anthem All About That Bass with another empowering new tune, No. Clutching her Best New Artist Grammy Award, the singer and songwriter looks set for more success with her highly anticipated new album, Thank You, due out on May 13.
Her debut album Title not only went platinum in the UK, it also yielded four multiplatinum Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 smashes – All About That Bass, Lips Are Movin, Dear Future Husband and Like I’m Gonna Lose You (featuring John Legend). Meghan says winning the Grammy has been the icing on the cake and something she felt overwhelmed by. “I mean, there’s many other awards like that you want and I love going to the awards shows and finally getting those. It’s so cool. But the Grammy… that’s why I cried so hard because I’ve never worked so hard in my life and that’s the dream! That’s like our Olympics. That’s our everything. And so to get one at such a young age, at 22, was unreal. It didn’t feel real. It felt like a big movie and I couldn’t stop crying!” The Grammy win has certainly made her day but she was also nominated for Best International Female at this year’s BRIT Awards and has a string of other award nominations ahead of her so there may yet be a few more thank you speeches required before the year is out! The new album, Thank You, will show a whole new side to this young star who seems to be able to turn her hand to everything. “I have a song on there called ‘I Won’t Let You Down’. And I love this song so much because it’s one of the few songs that I chose to make a little… Caribbean. Like it’s my favourite genre, so it’s a little different to anything
you’ve ever heard me do. But this song is kind of my ‘Man in the Mirror’ song. And when you hear it the whole time you think I’m talking about my parents like ‘I won’t let you down anymore, I’m gonna make myself better, I’m gonna make you proud’. And you never hear me say it but I’m actually talking to myself. Which is very cool and I’ve never done that in a song, ever.” Meghan’s been writing songs since she was a child and although she’s now basking in her own hard earned success she’s still sharing her songwriting talents. She’s written some great songs for other acts like Sledgehammer for Fifth Harmony and Ain’t Your Mama which Jennifer Lopez sang on American Idol. “A lot of my songs are self-empowerment songs and she loved that about my writing,” says Meghan, “and there’s this other song that she’s cut that I’m very proud of that’s called ‘I’m Looking Good’. It’s about… even Jennifer Lopez will question herself sometimes and get self-conscious.” Although Meghan has written for several artists there are two in particular she’s still really keen to work with. “Yeah. Bruno Mars where are you?! Every interview I have, I say his name very loud! I love him, I just want to meet him and write with him. I recently met one of my idols, will.i.am, at The Voice and I was so nervous to meet him, I couldn’t do it. And then I did finally and I was just really cool and chill and the whole time I wanted to yell ‘PLEASE WORK WITH ME’ and I didn’t and then after I performed, he came up to me and said ‘When are we working?’ and I was like ‘What? What? You’re will.i.am!’ I just worship his production and his writing. He is very talented. He’s a genius.” www.meghan-trainor.com

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac Directors: Bryan Singer The final part of the current X-Men trilogy that started with First Class, sees the emergence of the world’s first super mutant Apocalypse – and the X-Men must unite to defeat him from his extinction level plan.
Release dates were correct at time of going to press but could be subject to change.
From the dawn of civilisation the great Apocalypse (played by Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Oscar Isaac) – who has amassed the powers of many other great mutants
– was worshipped as a God, becoming immortal and invincible. Awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world he finds and recruits a team of mutants – including the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender) – to cleanse mankind and create an epic new world. But with the fate of Earth hanging in the balance, Mystique (Jennifer

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE
This sequel to the raucous 2014 comedy hit, sees Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) enlist the help of their former enemy Teddy (Zac Efron), when a female sorority – which includes Kick Ass’ Chloe Grace Moretz and Selena Gomez – moves in next door, and is even more debaucherous than the last one. Dave Franco and Lisa Kudrow return in support.
The animated movie companion to the uber-successful video game looks to tap into its stellar fanbase by providing another financial wing to the franchise. When an island populated by happy, flightless birds is invaded by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to three unlikely, and angry, outcasts – Red, Chuck and Bomb – to figure out what the pigs are up to.

As Shawn Ashmore’s (Iceman from the X-Men films) hero Jack Joyce, your in-game choices directly impact the cinematic action of intense gameplay combined with the tension of scripted television – providing a totally immersive experience.
(PS4/X1)
Fans will love the authenticity of this latest gaming incarnation of Ultimate Fighting Championship – even if the mechanics aren’t quite up to scratch. The popular sport is taken to the next level in ### terms of stunning visuals and the deepest roster ever seen on next-gen consoles, but with uninspiring game modes and predictable allround gameplay it does come up a bit short – much like cover star Ronda Rousey with her surprising loss to Holly Holm last time out. But despite its flaws it still packs a decent punch.
DIRT RALLY (X1/PS4/PC)
Enter the finest rallying game ever made. That might be a bold statement, but with sensational handling, superb presentation, and an excellent engine that provides impressive special effects – this is a product that has returned to its former glory when it carried the Colin McRae tag.

With an impressive rally cars roster and massive courses encompassing more than 70 stages, this is the real deal – despite a slightly disappointing career mode and less than stellar content – and will prove to be a truly satisfying challenge for fans.

PGER JOINS FORCES WITH JANE TOMLINSON APPEAL Whether you’re looking to gain a personal best or donning your chicken suit in the fun run, there are two great causes set to benefit from this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run… incredible challenges to raise money to help others before she passed away in 2007. The Appeal is primarily a grant giving charity and is very big on raising money locally to give back locally. If you decide to run and fundraise for this cause, all the money raised will stay in Peterborough.
This year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run has teamed up with a new official charity partner with strong links to the city.
“These links make the charity a perfect fit for the Perkins Great Eastern Run and more importantly, all the money raised by those running for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal stays in the city and is divided between local causes.” Another great local cause is once again supported by the 5k Fun Run. Stamford based Anna’s Hope raises money for children and young people with brain tumours and is another worthy cause supported by this fantastic annual event.
The Jane Tomlinson Appeal was launched back in 2000 when she and her family received the devastating news she had incurable breast cancer.
Kids are being encouraged to join in the Anna’s Hope Schools Challenge Cup where they can develop some friendly rivalry to see who can raise the most.
The Tomlinson family had moved to Peterborough in 1987 and along with their toddler daughter Suzanne moved into a house in Orton Goldhay and Jane’s middle child Rebecca was born a year later. Over the next seven years Jane captured the attention of the world through her achievements as she outlived her initial six month prognosis. With seemingly endless reserves of determination and courage, she completed
Annette Joyce, Service Director City Services and Communications, told ESP: “We are delighted to have the Jane Tomlinson Appeal as this year’s title charity for our half marathon. Jane was an inspirational woman who turned thousands of people towards running and we are proud to be associated with such an excellent cause. Jane lived in Peterborough during the late 1980s and her daughter Rebecca, who is running our half marathon, was born in our city.
You can choose to raise money for any charity that’s close to you heart in the half marathon or fun run but if you’re looking for a good cause to support, either of these charities are well worth it. Jane’s daughter Rebecca will also be joining the thousands of runners taking to the course around the city on Sunday October 9.

ESP’s Mikey Clarke slides into the hot seat for this month’s feature and catches up with a local scooter fan…
A
little while back I attended the Peterborough Lambretta & Vespa Scooter Club’s annual Easter Egg Run. The event saw 190 scooters take to the roads to deliver around 2,000 Easter Eggs to worthy causes in and around Peterborough.
Whilst mingling with the scooterists before they took off for the day, I spoke to a gentlemen named Peter Lee. With Peter talking so passionately about his scooter, it seemed only right to make him a star in our Pride and Joy features. Peter owns a Vespa Portofino Green GTV250cc. He told me, “I bought her new in 2007 and have been riding her ever since. I’d wanted one ever since the second generation Mod scene in the late 70's and early 80's. Family life got in the way as I had kids very early, but I got one eventually.” Peter’s Pride and Joy is a little different. “She's a limited run colour and a first generation GTV,” he said. “She harks back to the very early Vespa models. She has rarely ever let me down and just looks ace.”
Photos: Chris Brudenell
The scooter attracts a lot of attention around the streets of Peterborough, but it never used to be that way. Peter told me, “Back in 2007 she was looked down on in many circles but more and more people are starting to see the light

and appreciate her. She's quite rare as a GTS variant.” And what’s she like to ride? “Amazing. Smooth, quick and full auto – so no gears to fight with.” Peter continued, “Basic spannering is possible – providing you have the right tools, most jobs can be done at home. YouTube and the GTS Owners Club forum have a wealth of knowledge to plunder.” Peter and his scooter have been on many adventures. “I've taken the wife to France and Belgium on her,” he said. “I've done 1000 miles in a weekend riding from Huntingdon to Margate… then onto Exeter… down to Lands End… back to Exeter… then home. This was a charity ride in aid of Help for Heroes.” And the adventures aren’t over yet. “In late May/early June I’ll be riding her to St Tropez for Vespa World Days. Around 5,000 Vespa enthusiasts will be gathering from all over the world. The trip will be about 870 miles door to door.” If you’d like get involved in the local scene just contact the PLVSC on Facebook. What’s your Pride and Joy? USE COMPANY VEHICLES TO RAISE CASH WITH CHARLES & DEAN
Great value deals 'Super Sandwich Deal' It’s a smart and cost-effective way for businesses to raise cash and free up capital, spreading the cost easily over manageable repayments. As well as improving cash flow issues and business stability, asset refinance provides businesses with the capital to invest and grow. Could your business benefit from a cash injection? If the answer is yes, asset finance can help you to release cash quickly by refinancing existing business assets, such as equipment, machinery, property and of course vehicles too. One of the main reasons it’s so popular is because it allows you to release capital on assets you’re already using, whereas many other types of finance apply to the purchase of new assets.

TOP BEAUTY TIPS @ BACKSTAGE LIVE
TIME FOR A MAKEUP BAG MAKEOVER We are all guilty of getting into a makeup routine – how often do we add something new to our makeup bags! Well, here’s is a chance for all of us to get out of that rut. Boots in Queensgate are offering you the chance this month to ‘spring clean your makeup bag.’ Just head down and see any of the professionals at your favourite makeup counter and they’ll tell you which key items you should have to update your current look. I went along to the Smashbox counter for my review. Once we’d had a look at
the contents of my makeup bag, the team used my current makeup to give me a makeover, then showed me what additions I could have. They spent 30 minutes showing me contouring effects, and how brow liners and lip pencils can make a huge difference to the overall look. I came away feeling Hollywood ready and with a few purchases under my belt including their ‘crush on blush palette’ (pictured) for £35. So make sure you put some time aside one afternoon to go and have a bit of fun with Boots in Queensgate.
SKINCARE IS FOR BOYS TOO! MBE are noticing that it’s not just the ladies that are after healthy good looking skin, more and more guys are now asking for their help too. Men usually find less information and advice specifically aimed at them when it comes to keeping their skin safe and healthy, so therefore believe they just have to suffer poor skin conditions which is definitely not true. Male skin issues range from acne and scarring to damage triggered by harmful environmental polutions and sunlight not to mention the sweaty gym-sessions and stress that send your epidermis into overdrive, the near-constant assault leaves it no choice but to react. At My Body Essentials you can choose either a male or female fully qualified aesthetic therapist, Martin or Mary are waiting for your call on 01733 305102 or take a look at www.mybodyessentials.co.uk for more information.

show your support and raise money? They’re encouraging people to wear, bake or plant something purple this May. Contact their local fundraising manager george.burroughs@stroke.org.uk if you want more information on how you can help locally. I’ve already got my purple nail varnish on in support!
Did you manage to get down to the Backstage Live event at Queensgate last month? If you did you might have seen myself and ESP reporter Anna getting some beauty tips from the professionals. Here were the top three tips from the professionals we spoke to there: •
If you get a bit of a tan during the summer months (fake or bake) then add a small amount of a summer glow moisturiser to your foundation every morning. This way your foundation will glow and blend in with your new skin tones.
•
Always wear eye shadow – even if it’s a neutral shade that can hardly be seen by everyone else – because it helps to keep the rest of your eye make-up fresher for longer and gives your eyes definition that will last all day.
•
When using thick black eye makeup, always use an eyebrow pencil to add definition to the eyebrows, which will help finish off your look.
Keep an eye on the Queensgate website for their future fashion, health and beauty events.
PRODUCT OF THE MONTH
CRAZY ANGEL SOLD BY BARKERS
This month page sponsors Barkers said I should try out one of their spray tan products and get ready for the spring/summer months, and as I had no plans for a holiday to Barbados anytime soon, I thought I’d give it a go. They used a salon tanning spray called Crazy Angel. I’m pretty pale skinned, so I went for the lightest colour option available. The results were great, no patches and it lasted for a good week before it needed topping up. A great way to get lots of compliments!

BEING
A ‘DIRTY WEEKEND’ COULD DO YOU THE WORLD OF GOOD… The number one rule is eat more plant foods for the inulin content (a prebiotic that is a food for microbes). Add fermented foods such as kefir, sauerkraut or kimchi as well as the more widely known live cultured yoghurts for their healthy bacteria. Probiotics offer a good addition to your diet, however take advice over the organisms and type of probiotics, like everything not all are equal!
S
pring has finally sprung so it’s a good time to start having ‘dirty weekends’ or evenings when we can. Before your head starts going off in another direction I am referring to being out in nature and getting into the garden and getting our hands into the soil!
Like the soil which is full of organisms, we too have an ecosystem in our body known as our microbiome. This is a term used to describe all of the microbes or micro organisms that live inside of us. We’re literally teaming with these organisms throughout the many layers and folds of our body, even on our skin. There is a living, working, synergy with us and them, they’re personal to us, influenced by our lifestyle, diet and hygiene, and even our emotions play a role in how our microbes behave as well as stress hormones. Today with the varied health and digestive issues we now seem to suffer from we can’t turn a blind eye to the role our microbes play in our health when you consider what they do for us – Help to protect the gut lining Help us to digest our food and provide part of our energy They train and influence our immune system They provide a natural antibiotic to protect us from pathogens They provide food for the cells of the colon Help to metabolise drugs and hormones Reduce inflammation particularly in the gut They make B vitamins and fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin K Keep the PH balance
38
www.espmag.co.uk
May stabilise mood Help to neutralise compounds that can be cancer forming… they may also influence the behaviour of our genes and much more There are trillions of microbes that live in and on us, but they need our help in allowing them to do the best job they can. We’re living much more of a clean life, we have good sanitation which has kept us safe from infectious diseases such as cholera, however some of our ‘general’ daily hygiene habits are coming into question such as the use of antibacterial soaps, body scrubs and household cleaning. Are we supposed to be too ‘clean’ and upset the microbes that cannot fully recover? Antibiotics have saved many lives but potentially become less effective if over prescribed, and can cause separate issues as well as upsetting our microbiome. Not only being mindful of washing away our healthy friendly microbes we should also be aware that too much sugar and refined carbohydrates only feeds the unfavourable type! Dysbiosis is a term used when we have imbalanced our gut bacteria and that can trigger a host of annoying symptoms such as gas, belching, flatulence, thrush, bloating as well as more ‘serious’ health issues over a longer time. When our friendly microbes are devoid of natural foods (see below) and have been wiped out or affected negatively by our lifestyle, food intake, or medical drugs then imbalances can occur. Stress, smoking and alcohol also interrupt this balance! So what can we do to help build/balance our life giving microbes?
Reduce the sugary, refined processed carbohydrates and increase the more complex carbohyrates which are high in fibre such as brown rice, oats, lentils, and beans. Enjoy a host of natural foods from nuts, fruits and veggies as well as seeds, grains, millet, buckwheat and quinoa for example. Be mindful of unnatural chemicals that are going in or onto your food and drinks. Filter your drinking water of excess chlorine that affects our bacteria, get out into nature and the garden. It’s OK to get your hands dirty and wash with plain soap and water afterwards. Stop using the harsh antibacterial products in the home, look for more natural methods of cleaning. You may be in a job that requires powerful hand sanitisers and/or cleaners but when at home do your best to lower the use of these. If you have ongoing health challenges or are sick/vulnerable always seek the advice of your GP. I will leave you with these wise words that are still valid today – ‘All diseases begin in the gut’ – Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine quoted this over 2,000 years ago. In good gut health, Karen

STAND UP 10 ALL-STAR COMEDY TOUR MAY
The Cresset always bring us great comedy and this month it’s four heavyweight comics in the biggest comedy tour of the year.
Amongst all the tributes paid following the death of comedian Ronnie Corbett, one of the most intriguing was the photo Robbie Williams posted on Twitter. In case you missed it, Robbie's got a tattoo on his neck of the Two Ronnies’ glasses that featured in their TV show credits. He clearly enjoyed sharing the inkwork with people, but given how this year’s going; if he gets one every time someone famous dies his neck will end up looking like he's wearing one of those 'snoods' Premiership footballers wear when it’s too chilly for them. As well as The Two Ronnies he's already got a tattoo dedicated to Elvis Presley on his upper shoulder, a Morecambe & Wise dancing silhouette on his forearm and has even joked that his butt cheeks are reserved for Ant & Dec! But for me there's one of his heroes that's sorely missing, and who like Ronnie Corbett sadly passed away recently. Ken Adam, the film production designer and mastermind behind the most iconic sets and gadgets in James Bond history. Ken's work was unrivalled and clearly a big influence on Robbie's career. His first ever UK number one Millenium didn't sample the Two Ronnies’ theme tune, it sampled the theme tune of Robbie's favourite Bond film You Only Live Twice, the one which Adam designed Blofeld’s volcano lair, arguably the finest in the Bond series. The Millenium video also sees Robbie singing next to an Aston Martin DB5 (the car Adam created the gadgets for) and trying to fly a jet pack (which Adam designed for Thunderball). Robbie should be asking the Tattoo Fixers TV show to create a clear canvas on his back in order to recreate the epic finale to You Only Live Twice. Let’s see Ken Adam's masterpiece in all its explosive glory, Tiger Tanaka's ninja army abseiling from Robbie's shoulders down his spine and an ominous looking monorail (a reoccurring theme in Ken A's sets) stretching around Williams' waist being driven by Blofeld. Either that or Robbie transforms his face to disguise himself as a Japanese fisherman. If it was good enough for Sean Connery then it’s good enough for Robbie Williams.

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United… The football season is coming to a close and to be honest, it’s not been the season we all dreamed about at the start of August. At the beginning of every year, every football fan dreams of that promotion-winning campaign, but we have been far too inconsistent with our performances and that’s why we will finish where we do.
“...the fantastic skills of the Peterborough United Amputee football team...”
Photos: theposh.com
These guys currently operate in a sixteam league and as the message spreads about the Amputee Association, I am sure that will increase. If you want to find out more, contact me at the club and I will be happy to put you in touch with the guys.

So if you have popped the question and are seeking a venue, either for the actual wedding or the reception, then look no further than the ABAX.
Dreaming is part and parcel of sport as a rule though. You have to dream big. Reach for the moon and you may fall among the stars; that is a motto that I try to live by. Everyone has dreams, whether it be for what they’re trying to attain or the dream wedding and of course, while the football might be coming to a close at the ABAX, that doesn’t mean the football club shuts its doors and across the region, a 3pm kick-off on a Saturday afternoon might well become their wedding day. I know what you’re all thinking, how does a Wedding Day and Peterborough United Football Club

go hand in hand? Well, I’m glad you asked because you can get married at the ABAX. And why would you not want to, we have had so many happy couples tie the knot with the famous pitch in the backdrop. Yes that is right, some of our suites have actually been ordained! The football club hold a Civil Marriage and Partnership licence and with an excellent choice of menus, we can tailor to suite your taste and budget, everything to make your extra day special (with the exception of a kick about on the pitch with the bride and groom).
Away from the wedding scene, I wanted to make all readers aware of some of the teams that we operate within our community scheme. Those that attended the Sky Bet League One fixture with Rochdale would’ve seen the fantastic skills of the Peterborough United Amputee football team, who put on a wonderful showcase of their talents before and at half-time.
And finally from me this month, may I take this opportunity to thank all of the supporters who’ve backed the club throughout a difficult campaign. Your support, both home and away, has been magnificent and I wanted to ensure that you are all aware that you are very much appreciated. We know from a recent survey conducted that there are many reasons why season ticket renewals may not have been completed yet, but on behalf of the club, we are always here to discuss how we can help make the whole experience better. I am on phil@theposh.com if anyone wishes to contact me. Phil

INTRODUCING:
ANTICS AJ AND NICK T. by Anna Ruggiero
DJ AJ It was great to finally catch up with Peterborough DJ’s AJ, and Nick T whose event management company Antics not only sponsors the ESP nightlife page, but AJ has been a DJ for more than 15 years and organises a wealth of top nights in the popular city centre venue, Edwards, Flares and Red Room.

www.espmag.co.uk
It all started back in the 90s for AJ, listening to House and RnB visiting record shops up and down the country getting the latest tunes and playing at top venues both locally and nationally.
great and now all the years of playing and sussing out the crowd has meant that alongside Nick T, we've set up some really popular nights in town and now at Edwards, Flares, Red Room on Broadway.”
AJ told me: “It’s been great playing in the city for as long as I have and I’ve worked with some great DJs - I remember the days when venues such as Faith, Liquid, Toho and The Bar were buzzing in town. You’d play the latest sounds and people would come out especially to hear what tunes were doing the rounds – the DJ was the founder of new music back in those days!”
Having spent some time with AJ, one thing that comes across loud and clear is that he’s a man that doesn’t do things by half and not content with running just one successful night, he and Nick T actually run four nights at Edwards and play there every weekend, which in the life of a DJ starts on a Thursday.

AJ continues: “Working alongside top local DJs has been
DJ Nick T a bit of an edge from hip hop, garage, house, RnB, bashment and much more. “Each night draws a different crowd with drink promos and resident and guest DJs bringing the best and latest tunes to this ever popular city centre venue.” For more details on these nights and offers, link up with AJ and Nick T on their Facebook pages:

SOUL RUNNERS ARE OUT IN FRONT The Tweedie sisters are, Marie, Kim and Nancy. They join front man Mitch Mitchell, father and son Barry and Chris Roberts on guitar and bass, with James Booth on drums and Rick Slowfinger on guitar/synthesiser. The synthesiser is obviously vital to create the rich brass sound, without which there’d be another eight band members!
I recently saw a Soul Runners gig and loved the fun atmosphere they created. Their music is Stax and Atlantic soul and features three female singers doing not just the sound but the movements of those soul days. The synchronised dancing in time to the music brought back memories of the stage presence of artists like The Ikettes. I thought I’d ask the band how they got together and I got this amusing reply , so I thought it was worth repeating in the column: ‘For it came to pass … During the 10th month of twenty fourteen in the deep
recesses of an industrial unit in the borough of Westwood, the Tweedie sisters ventured one night, following the distant sound of Stax and Atlantic soul. ‘They approached with caution to find five troglodytes rehearsing. The girls huddled together speaking in a language and tone only they understand, then silently moved towards the microphones... The chorus kicked in to Try a Little Tenderness and the whole of Westwood became bathed and drenched in the clarity and beauty to the wall of sound it produced. And so the story began…’

demand particularly in festival season with their special brand of spicy folk music and quirky original songs. The new album, In The Park, again highlights the unique style of the band and some of the tracks feature a guest performance from Jo Hitchin on cello. The album launch will take place on Friday June 3 starting at 8pm at Stamford Arts Centre.
Re-Take That feature Rob B Williams (another great one! Don’t tell me and Gary Baa-low?). They say, “We want our audiences to experience the same emotions as they did during the real Take That concerts in the summer of 2009 and 2011. The ability to recreate the intangible aspects, and capture the very essence of Take That has put us where we are today.”

The Soul Runners tell me they always give 100%. But they admit you can’t do anything other than 100% with soul.
NEW ALBUM FROM PENNYLESS
I love the names that tribute acts give themselves, and one of the top tributes to Take That is called Re-Take That! They visit Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday May 21. The group have enjoyed phenomenal success to date, having secured a loyal following touring all over the UK and Europe.
All the ingredients of song, dance, costumes and light show will make the evening spectacular with a show designed for the smaller auditoriums, whilst staying true to the feel of Take That.
A truly family affair! Anyone who sees a performance would know that the whole band are clearly friends and family who are having fun playing music that they personally all really love. It’s very infectious. I particularly liked Proud Mary and Try a Little Tenderness. Their playlist has strong influences from The Commitments, Otis Redding and Tina Turner.
One of the area’s hardest working folk bands, Pennyless, are shortly to release their fifth album. The band who are Penny Stevens, Les Woods, Graham Dale and Colin Benton with guests Tom Savage on drums and Jo Hitchin on cello, are in
Penny and Les revealed – “The songs are inventive and of a story telling nature about characters on the edge of society, sometimes moving into the other-world. In addition to fiddle, guitar, bass and flute we use drums, bouzouki, cello, electric guitar and a touch of keyboard to slide into the lush world of folk-psychedelia.” The album will be available at all their gigs and on www.pennylessmusic.co.uk.
