So who’s been naughty this year? With 10 million viewers, I wondered if the pressure led to any mistakes. “One of the make-up girls face-planted onto the floor on set,” said Tom. Dominic continued – “And this was right where we were due to be filming within minutes. She managed to get up though and quickly rushed off to do someone’s make-up. Because it was all so rushed it was only after the show that she went into shock.”
A massive turn out at this year’s Springfields lights switch on
The Emmerdale cast helped light up Springfields and ESP’s Mikey Clarke was there to give the stars their first Christmas gifts… Springfield’s Outlet Shopping in Spalding had their Christmas lights switch on at the end of last month, and ESP was invited along. The music at the event was a band called Edna’s Hat. For those unfamiliar with the folk rock band (named after the iconic headwear of the well-loved Emmerdale character), it’s made up of Emmerdale cast and crew members.
Photos: Chris Brudenell
The band’s led by Tom Lister (Carl King) and Sian Reese-Williams (Gennie Walker) on lead vocals, with fellow co-star Dominic Brunt (Paddy Kirk) rocking out on the mandolin. They were also joined by Emmerdale’s scheduler Nader Mabadi on guitar and drums with Steve Mosby on electric guitar. Who knew that Emmerdale had such a multi-talented cast? There was a fantastic atmosphere and the crowd loved it! Face of ESP Simona Bajorinaite and I got an exclusive inteview with Tom, Sian and

Dominic before they hit the stage and so it was time to present their Christmas gifts – a box of choccies for Sian as she was feeling poorly, a pen that gives you an electric shock for Dominic as he's the joker of the group and for Tom... a brick with 'I'm sorry' written on it! Fortunately he has a sense of humour so after plenty of laughs all round we moved on to the live Emmerdale episode. This marked 40 years of the popular soap and saw the shocking demise of character Carl King who was of course, clobbered with said brick! Tom, who played Carl, described the atmosphere as – “Unbelievable. The whole set was so different. Quite often you don’t see certain actors for weeks on end if you’re not in the same scenes. But this time, because we were on location, everyone was together. It was so much fun.”
Sian added – “But apart from that, everything went so smoothly and I’m glad it did because we deserved for it to. We’d spent so much time on the live show and we all felt very prepared. We knew if anything went wrong it would be due to bad luck.” A storyline that got everyone talking after this episode was Tom’s character, Carl King, being killed by a brick to the head. How did the actor, who’s been on the show for nine years, feel about the plot? “I was thrilled with the way my character was killed off. It was thrilling and I couldn’t have asked for more. “The fans response with my character being killed was mental. I get constant messages from people saying they can’t believe I’m gone, or that they’re not going to watch Emmerdale anymore. My Twitter went crazy that night with people saying they were watching the episode over and over again and again, and that it makes them cry… that particular message was from Sian,” Tom joked. What’s next for the popular actor? Although Tom was unable to discuss his future plans, he explained there’d been a lot of meetings recently and to watch this space. During the chat, the cast and I also discussed what it’s like being on such a popular show, Lisa Riley on Strictly Come Dancing, and zombies… as you do. This and more can be seen by visiting www.espmag.co.uk If you missed the event, check out Springfieilds Shopping Outlet in Spalding to see the lights and grab a top brand bargain one night soon. It really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

The big switch on is at 6pm followed by a burst of fireworks to officially mark the start of the city's festivities. Chico is helping out in advance of his appearance in Celebrities On Ice which is coming to the Peterborough Arena in January and also features other previous Dancing On Ice stars – Lisa Scott-Lee, Ray Quinn and Kyran Bracken. You can find out more on www.celebsonice.co.uk. A spectacular Christmas tree will arrive on Cathedral Square on November 12 and a Berber market will arrive on December 6 so you can pick up some Christmas gifts with a difference. It's time... to start feeling festive!
Peterborough Olympian and Strictly Come Dancing star Louis Smith will switch on Serpentine Green’s Christmas Lights this month and we can’t wait to see the twinkle-toes star back in the city.

The Peterborough shopping centre asked shoppers via their Facebook page who they’d like to switch on this year’s lights and Louis’ name came out on top – well who else would fit the bill but our local hero from Eye? Serpentine Green will be launching its stylish, modern look Christmas lights at an event on Thursday November 22 at 5.30pm. The new scheme has a star theme so it is only fitting that one of Peterborough’s greatest stars should turn them on. Chantelle Watson, centre manager told ESP – “I can’t tell you how excited we are that Louis has agreed to switch our Christmas lights on. I think everyone in Hampton and Peterborough is so proud of Louis’ achievements. We’re also wishing Louis lots of luck in Strictly Come Dancing.”
CHRISTMAS FAYRE FOR FIRST RESPONDERS Christmas is the time for giving so why not pick up some gifts and do something for a great cause at the same time? The Sawtry Responder Group (wonderful volunteers who train to be first on the scene in medical emergencies saving lives) is holding a Christmas Shopping Fayre on Saturday November 24 at The Sawtry Community College, Fen Lane, Sawtry from 10am until 2pm. There’ll be over 100 stalls so it looks like it’ll be one of the largest Christmas shopping events in the area. It’s just £2 per adult and children go free. There’s free parking and plenty of entertainment for the children and adults too. Every penny of money raised from this event is to site two public defibrillators – the life saving piece of equipment that can make all the difference in a cardiac arrest.

Louis
And Louis certainly has been listening to all of the advice as by week two he and Flavia topped the leader board with their beautifully romantic Viennese Waltz which, as head judge Len Goodman put it – “had more turns than the Government.” High praise indeed!
ESP’s backing Peterborough gymnast Louis Smith in the competition to be king of the dance floor and Sarah ‘sequins’ Tempest is following his hip action… We’re used to seeing Peterborough Olympian Louis Smith top of the pile for his incredible skills on the pommel horse, but few could’ve known that he could also cut it with the best on the dance floor. But cut it he certainly can, as he’s turned out to be one of the most talented contestants to appear on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1. Whether it’s Latin or ballroom, Louis has shown grace, rhythm, fluidity and a sexiness in lycra far beyond his gymnastics leotard! In short, as judge Bruno Tonioli put it, Louis is “a snake hipped wonder”! In week one, it was most definitely a case of saving the best for last as Louis and dance partner Flavia Cacace earned a standing ovation for their Cha Cha Cha. Even new judge and posh bird Darcey Bussell was quite overcome! All the judges loved it placing them third on the leader board, with only Craig offering up the criticism of flat feet (“you’ll sort that when you get up onto the balls dahling…”) and his ‘serious’ face. His face was serious? With all that hip action, it’s amazing anyone noticed.
Then Hollywood Week was a real highlight for our boy’s fans as Louis and Flavia recreated the iconic finale from Dirty Dancing. It took some emergency beans on toast from his mum Elaine to get him through the training but he cracked it! Whilst some celebs were clearly more Fred Dibnah than Fred Astaire, Louis showed them all how it was done with a fabulously sexy salsa, complete with a mind blowing splits jump and of course, that iconic lift. He admitted to never having seen the movie but still managed to do it justice; Patrick Swayze would’ve been proud. Let’s just say – Louis, we’d carry a watermelon for you anytime! But whilst everyone at home, the studio audience and three of the judging panel loved it, Len ‘grumpy’ Goodman didn’t and gave Louis his harshest comments to date. “It was timid and lacked attack,” he said. And we thought he was supposed to be the expert. Listen Len, no-one puts Louis in a corner! Those words came back to ‘haunt’ Len in Halloween week as Louis and Flavia danced a Tango so stunning, it not only took them straight back to the top of the leader board but earned them the first 9s of the series. Strong, commanding, step-perfect – only Louis, could manage to look THAT hot dressed as a zombie! Week by week, Louis is getting better and more confident and, so far, is looking a dead cert to make it to the final, with only Denise Van Outen and Lisa Riley (who’d have thought it?! That girl can move!) as his close contenders. But with the consistent improvement Louis is displaying, we’re prepared to bet he’ll soon leave twinkle toes Van Outen standing in her white sparkly stilettos and send Lisa Riley shimmying back to Emmerdale. Whatever happens though, Louis has already done this city proud achieving the impossible by making us love him more than we already did. The judges’ comments so far have been pretty fair and Louis is soaking it up like a sponge. Let’s just hope he acts on Bruno’s advice to “get out to a nightclub” as he “needs to learn to be freer in his movement.” Form an orderly queue at Edwards, girls…
Keep an eye on www.espmag.co.uk, facebook and Twitter for all the latest Louis updates from Sarah.

“He’s doing really well!” he told me. “I’ve known the lad can move for a long time but whilst everyone has seen his amazing skills on the pommel horse, it’s fantastic that he’s getting to showcase his other talents now. It’s great to see just how much he’s improving, especially when you look back at the rehearsal tapes, but he’s really listening which is really important.

But whilst Louis’ twinkle toes may have come as a surprise to many fans, one person who wasn’t surprised was Louis’ friend and fellow Peterborough boy, Aston Merrygold from JLS.

WOMEN TALKING SHOP
pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk
Psychologist Dr Jessamy Hibberd says men talk about what they're doing, women talk about what they're feeling. How does that explain the last conversation I overheard between two women that was about planning a shopping trip?
Pep Cipriano
MUFFIN TOPS SIMONA’S LOVE LIST! Ask most 19-year-old girls a question about what they like and usually they’ll tell you it’s shopping, shoes, handbags, Justin Beaker (or whatever his name is) or that painting one fingernail a different colour thing. I put the ‘likes’ question to newly crowned Face of ESP Simona Bajorinaite from Stilton and her response was – “Blueberry muffins.” Never one to turn down a bit of muffin, I fixed up a surprise photo shoot with a batch of Asda’s finest (I’m on a budget) for Simona and I to tuck into as I put a few more questions to our winning cover girl... Is your ambition to one day own a muffin shop? “No! Although it is tempting. I want to keep working on my modelling career and travel around the world doing it. That’ll be my dream come true.” So, apart from blueberry muffins, what else do you like? “I like lay-ins and yes I like all cakes and anything sweet. I must have at least one cake a day and I know it’s bad for my figure but I can’t help it!” And dislikes? “There aren't many things I really don't like but I do hate being cold. Once on a night out in London, I paid £80 for a taxi home when it was only a 15 minute walk. I couldn’t bear being cold!” What’s your Face of ESP experience been like so far? “Amazing. I’m meeting new people, doing things and going to places that I’ve never heard of before or never thought of doing. Plus I’ve been on a couple of shopping trips already and that’s a very good start.” What have you done since wining and what’s coming up for you? “I’ve met all the ESP family and everyone has been so nice in helping me to settle in. I met the Cresset pantomime cast and had a great laugh and then I met one of my favourite people – Gino D’Acampo! He was very good looking in the flesh and really funny and now I know why all the ladies love him. My boyfriend and I got his autograph and I hope that’s the first of many I’ll get in this role. I’m looking forward to switching on the Christmas lights in Queensgate and I’m doing a fire walk for charity but I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry about that!”
14
www.espmag.co.uk
Are you being recognised as Face of ESP? “Yes, especially in Edwards where I worked. I’m actually quite shy and don’t like too much attention so it feels strange getting it more than I did before, but it's lovely when people I’ve never met before congratulate me.” What was the first thing on your mind when you woke up the morning after winning? “I was still in shock and lay there laughing in disbelief; I was just too excited to do anything but I knew I had things to do straight away. I went shopping for an outfit with ESP’s style guru, Sue Donnelly, who helped me choose my cover shoot clothes. We had a great time picking dresses and we had a lovely chat over coffee. Sunday was the photo shoot, which was great and later that evening my boyfriend took me out for a lovely dinner.” I remember you being the first girl to arrive on finals night. You must have been very keen?! “Yes, I arrived about 50 minutes early! I thought it started at 7pm, so I thought I was actually 20 minutes early. Luckily, you were there to calm me down and Keith Dalton spent a long time chatting to me before the other girls began to arrive.” What made you enter in the first place? “My mum encouraged me to enter. I wanted to win but honestly didn't think I would, so I had doubts about going. But my mum told me to be myself and have fun. I’m pleased she supported me like she did.” Did you at any point during the evening think you’d blown it? “No, I was just being myself; I had no worries because I was being me, just like I am to everyone. People can tell when you’re being fake and you get found out eventually. I wanted to be honest to myself and respect the competition I was in.”
Was there a judge’s question you remember the most? “Yes – 'would you go training with the local rugby team?’ I said yes, but really I’d be quite scared. I might end up getting thrown around like the ball and end up looking like the Face of ESP with no face!” How did you rate your chances once you made the final six? “Not very high. I looked at the other girls and didn’t think I’d win and at that point I was delighted to have made the final six. But when my number was called out as the winner it was as if the whole thing was being played out in slow motion. I looked at my number to double check it was me and I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “I felt like I was in a bubble!” Have you made any friends from the finals night? “Yes, all the girls are really lovely and I am so glad I’ve met them. We are organising a night out soon and I’m looking forward to having a good time with them all.”
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Heating Because I refuse to put mine on until I really have to: Rip-off, condensation, grumpy, hoodie instead of lingerie, Rudolf, vest, etch-a-sketch windows, pale, Raynaud's phenomenon, “go to your mums”, Wickes draft excluder (any excuse for a bacon roll from the burger van), overgrown man garden and faulty freezer.
‘DARK DESTROYER’ AT HAYCOCK
LIVE AND LET DINER IN DEEPING ‘Live to Dine, Dine to Live’ is the motto for Iron Horse Ranch – the newly re-branded Harley’s Diner in Market Deeping. Mmmm... I like this motto. It’s the first step for owner Richard Swinscoe’s expansion plans, which will see the popular eatery relocate to new premises in the town next year. An iron horse is a generic nickname for a motorbike and the rebrand has brought with it a new range of daytime, evening, drinks and dessert menus featuring more American classics. Can’t wait to tuck in! Good luck Richard and keep me posted.
Most people reading this will probably only relate to Nigel Benn being a DJ. That’s fine but I remember Benn and respect him more from his boxing career – one that saw him notch up 42 wins and 35 of them by knockout. The Dark Destroyer was one of the most exciting middleweight boxers of the late 1980s and 1990s and thanks to The Haycock Hotel in association with Kevin Sanders, Benn is coming to Peterborough on Friday November 2. You can meet Benn and ask him questions about his career plus enjoy a three-course meal all for just £65 per person. To book, call 01780 782223.
LAUREN PACKS A PUNCH! Former Face of ESP Lauren Hughes is a girl not to mess with. Our one-time cover girl put in a great performance in only her second white collar boxing bout and she’s determined to keep on fighting next year.
DECEMBER OPENING
It was yet another enjoyable evening of boxing entertainment put on by Vic’s Gym in Hampton and at least three more shows, including the possibility of an all ladies event, are planned for 2013. If you fancy a go or want to do a spot of boxing training, give Vic a bell on 07595 167679.
FOR ATTICA VIP The boutique nightclub we’ve all been waiting for in Peterborough will finally fling open its doors in December and I for one can’t wait to get in there. Building work is almost complete and the plush interior is now beginning to take shape. The owners have taken care of every fine detail from the level of lighting to the level of service we’ll receive from bar staff and dedicated booth waitresses to ensure we’ll all get a proper VIP experience. Best of all, this experience will not damage our pockets. Entry and drinks prices will be in line with all the other major bars and clubs within our city centre. There are so many quirky and unique aspects to this club that I wish I had more column inches to mention. But special attention’s been paid to securing classy booths including ones sponsored by Dom Perignon and Belvedere Vodka to add that bit of sparkle to the venue. The cocktail experience at Attica VIP will also be the talk of the town. Candy floss cocktails are just one of a range of intriguing drinks I’m itching to try. They’ll even take your order on iPads! Christmas and New Year party bookings are already being placed so get in quick if you want to celebrate the festivities here. All the latest news as the opening countdown continues can be found on Facebook and Twitter. You can also check out www.atticavip.co.uk and as ever keep an eye on www.espmag.co.uk.
HP4 IS THE SAUCE!
NORTH ST. BAR IS RIGHT UP MY STREET
BMW have announced their latest version of the fantastic S1000RR sports bike and it’s called the HP4. This superbike – available in two versions – will be officially launched on December 1 which means Christmas comes early for me and the guys at Balderston in Hampton.
Big shout to owners of North Street Bar Lauren and Sam who’ve made some welcome additions to the venue’s offering.
I’ve ridden the original ‘SThou’ and its updated version and on both occasions (especially with the recent model) I thought about jacking in my job, car, girlfriend and mum’s cooking so that I could runaway with the bike and roam from town to town with a rucksack just like Kane in Kung Fu. The bike’s that good, trust me.
The bar’s late night (from 11pm) acoustic music sessions are now fully booked into the New Year with a wide range of performers. Musicians from all genres are welcome and the guys are on the lookout for bookings from February so give them a shout on 01733 343785.
But just when you think BMW can’t top what they’ve already topped, they come out with another superb version of this class-winning bike. Everything on this machine is lighter and has been fine tuned from the gearing and traction control to the exhaust and wheelie detection system. A carbon version is also available for those with an obsession for covering their bikes with even more lightweight material. All I can say is that I’m foaming at the mouth to throw my leg over one but in the meantime a poster (replacing one of Maria Whittaker) on my bedroom wall will have to suffice. For enquires about the HP4, call Balderston on 01733 565470.
The venue’s Funhouse Comedy Club returns on Wednesday November 7 and Lauren and Sam have recently launched ‘Artist of The Month’ where local artists can display their work. Nine artists have so far been confirmed. You can currently see the works of Garth www.garthbayley.co.uk and from Tuesday November 13 it’s the turn of Prue Pye www.pruepye.co.uk
Remember folks: no effort, no entry. See you there...
CAUGHT IN THE ACT! This regular segment of my column is supposed to be about stitching other people up rather than myself. But I thought I’d share the moment I was papped by Chris Porsz – since it’s been a mission of mine to be part of his brilliant collection of everyday people images. If I’m honest, being caught in the act with the Perkins Great Eastern Run mascot wasn’t what I had in mind. I was thinking of being papped doing something much cooler like riding my bike or scoffing a KFC. Still, I’m proud of being the only person in Chris’ collection to be in conversation with a Dinosaur – now that’s a first! Thanks Chris and keep up the good work.

Sarah Tempest
ESP’s Sarah Tempest catches up with local hero Aston Merrygold as JLS return to the charts…
LS may have only come second on X Factor in 2008 but, whilst the winner Alexandra Burke has enjoyed mixed success, JLS have gone on to have a string of hits, have won a stack of awards (including two Brits and four MOBOs) and are one of the hottest bands around. With their new single Hottest Girl In The World out now, I caught up with one quarter of the band (and our favourite of course) Peterborough boy Aston Merrygold to get the goss on the music, tattoos and eating kangaroo balls.
J
Hottest Girl has a more grown up R&B, urban feel to it than earlier songs from JLS so how does Aston feel about moving on from the pop sound they’re known for? “I would say it still is a pop song,” Aston told me, “it’s got additives of the old school days of Justin Timberlake and is reminiscent of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. We’re not afraid to be pop, that’s what we do. But we are all growing up, we’re not 18 anymore so we are evolving and are taking more mature
us too. He’s brought some serious vibes to Evolution!” JLS performed the new single for the first time live on TV on the X Factor results show which Aston says was a nerve wracking experience, but did the fact that X Factor was familiar territory ease the nerves or make them worse? “The name may still be the same but to us it’s a completely different show now so we gave it the same performance that we would’ve given on any stage anywhere. We’ve not had much chance to catch up with the programme yet but from what I have seen, James Arthur looks really good.” It’s little wonder Aston hasn’t been able to watch the show; as well as a new single and album to promote with the boys, he’s also replacing Adam Garcia as a judge on Sky 1’s Got To Dance. “The show is a great opportunity for me,” says Aston, “I’m definitely a dance lover, I love all types of dance and it’s a great chance to put all my opinions to good use. Working with
"I may have lived in London for six years but Peterborough is still as close to me as ever.” additives and influences from music and adding them to our own flavour, hence the name of the album, Evolution.” The new album saw the boys working with some legendary US producers including R&B hit maker Rodney Jerkins, who Aston clearly respects – “To be in the same presence as the guy who’s made hits for Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson, Aretha, Kanye West and Beyoncé was just crazy. He only works with the best so it was a real honour that he wanted to work with
16
www.espmag.co.uk
Kimberly (Wyatt, ex-Pussycat Doll) and Ashley (Banjo – from BGT winners Diversity) is fantastic and they’ve been easing me into the whole judging game. It’s just a lot of fun.” With Aston taking up such a prominent role outside of the band, rumours of a split are inevitable but Aston is quick to put these to bed. “There was a rumour I was moving to the US to pursue a solo career but it’s not true. We may be close but we all like to do our own things too and the future is definitely JLS.”
Despite his own busy schedule, the former Jack Hunt school boy has still found time to keep up with his friend, and fellow Peterborough boy, Louis Smith on Strictly Come Dancing – “He’s doing really well!” he says. “I’ve known the lad can move for a long time but whilst everyone has seen his amazing skills on the pommel horse, it’s fantastic that he’s getting to showcase his other talents now.” But Aston is quick to rebuff any suggestion that he himself may want to step into Louis’ Cuban heels, nor does he fancy heading down under for I’m A Celebrity. “Now I’m a dance judge, I don’t think I need to prove myself on Strictly,” he says. “And I’m certainly not the kind of guy who wants to throw himself off things and eat Kangaroo balls!” So that’s a no then?! Louis always gets a great reception when he comes home to Peterborough but Aston says he himself doesn’t get home as often as he’d like, hence he has his now famous tattoo of Peterborough Cathedral on his arm. “In this game, it’s very easy to lose your mind and forget where you came from.” For a boy who’s had so much success over the last four years, Aston still seems incredibly grounded and proud of his roots, so does he have plans for any more city inspired inkings, The Lido on his bum perhaps? “No” he laughs, “but I am starting on the other arm now. I have had a few ‘oh, you’ll regret it’ conversations but I’ll always know how and why I got these tattoos. I may have lived in London for six years but Peterborough is still as close to me as ever.”
bandmate Marvin down the aisle and settle down just yet – “Marvin and Rochelle’s wedding was fantastic but that day was all about them. I’m not the type of person that has to have something just because I’ve seen it. I do have a girlfriend now but I’ve seen people who are together 10 years and haven’t got married because they’re not in that place yet. I’ve got someone now who I see as more than a friend and it’s nice to share certain moments with her.” With weddings, awards, a tour and hit singles, it’s certainly been a big year for the boys so far but Aston has one big highlight of 2012. “It has to be the Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace. Over three billion people watched that show and we were aware of the magnitude of it. Not many people can say they played for the Queen at her Jubilee, it was such an honour, and it felt amazing. We went to Buckingham Palace afterwards and Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow were all talking to my mum and saying what a delight me and the boys are, how hard working we are. My Mum was so proud! To hear that legends like that are fans of ours, it was incredible!” This may have been a massive year for the boys but judging by this new single and album, 2013 promises to be just as huge.
He may not get home often but when he does, Aston has been known to nip into The Harrier in Gunthorpe for a cheeky drink, so can we expect to see him in there anytime soon for a pint and a Full Monty mixed grill? “Probably not”, he laughs, “I just caught a quick one in there, if I do get back, it’s more likely that I’ll be visiting family.” Although roots and stability are hugely important to him, I’m sorry girls but Aston admits he’s not quite ready to follow
JLS’ album Evolution is out on November 5.

“People often feel guilty about making a claim but it isn’t a direct hit to the employer, the insurers deal with it and there shouldn’t be any ill feeling,” explains Naina Tilney, managing director at Balfour Law. “We’re all lawyers with years of expertise in this field and we’re good negotiators. You’ll deal with one person all the way through and we always make ourselves available for our clients.” The team pride themselves on their years of expertise in this field, only take on a claim if it’s genuine and can make a rapid assessment on whether you should take things further. As they work on behalf of insurers too, these guys really do know both sides of the story and have a great insight into how to handle things. If you end up in a position where you simply can’t work because of an injury and don’t receive any income during a period of absence, inevitably you’ll feel the pinch. You might feel uncomfortable about claiming against your employer, especially if you’ve enjoyed your job, but the team at Balfour Law deal with claims in a sympathetic manner so they don’t ruffle any feathers. As a result their clients often continue to work for the same employer as the claim’s dealt with by them via the employer’s insurers.
“People often feel guilty about making a claim but it isn’t a direct hit to the employer”
Don’t feel it’s you who’s slipped up if you’ve had an accident at work. It could turn your life upside down but Balfour Law know how to get you back on your feet again… The so called ‘compensation culture’ isn’t something to be encouraged but valid claims are. Employers have an obligation to keep you safe in your job and when things go wrong there can be far reaching consequences. All of a sudden you could find yourself unable to work and support yourself or your family, not only worrying about your health but your future security.
It doesn’t have to be a battle ground to get the compensation you deserve or a reason to fall out with your employer – not if it’s handled properly. Unlike some claims handlers, a good legal firm like Balfour Law will only act on your behalf if they believe you have a strong case and they’ll deal direct with the insurance companies on your behalf.
Their experienced team can deal with all sorts of accidents at work ranging from workplace trips and slips through to more serious injuries, and problems caused by defective work equipment through to inadequate training. Balfour Law act under a ‘no win no fee’ system which means that if you lose you don’t have to pay anything. If you win, they will attempt to recover their fees from the losing party. This means that you keep 100% of the compensation awarded to you and instructing Balfour Law Solicitors will cost you absolutely nothing.

OMG Hair & Nails We’ve heard great things about Dermalogica, and OMG Hair & Nails in Stanground offers both the products and Dermalogica facials for those who like to take care of their skin. We popped by with Face of ESP Simona Bajorinaite so she could try it out for herself.
Simona had the 20 minute mini-facial, which involves an intense cleanse, tone and moisturise with exfoliation and a mask, plus a deep cleanse with Ozone steaming. The whole experience of a facial should be relaxing, and of course a way of giving your skin the care and attention it needs. Simona told us –“I could’ve fallen asleep, it was really relaxing, refreshing, uplifting and my skin feels fresh, soft and like new!”
Dermalogica is fast becoming one of the most popular skin care ranges, and customers testify that all the treatments work, leaving you with skin that’s beautiful inside and out. You can use your own products at home, and also have the luxury of a professional Dermalogica facial every month or so to keep your skin at its best.
“I could’ve fallen asleep, it was really relaxing, refreshing, uplifting and my skin feels fresh, soft and like new!”
through the products which will suit your skin type, and the best way to use them. There’s a number of different products available in the salon, including ready made starter kits and individual products too – and these can be tailored to your specific needs.
Dermalogica products aren’t just for the face either, they can be used on the body too, and a little bit goes a long way! They also have a fabulous make-up range too.
OMG Hair & Nails offers a huge selection of the products, plus beauty therapist Tammie Purdy can give you an amazing facial in the salon using only the very best products. It’s very important to look after your skin, and you’d be surprised how just spending a few extra minutes giving your face some TLC with a quick cleanse, tone, exfoliation and moisturise can leave your skin looking and feeling great. You can avoid those break-outs and have a smooth, clear complexion in a matter of days. Tammie offers a free initial consultation called FaceMapping, where she’ll analyse your skin and talk you
So if you want to get yourself booked in for a facial just call 01733 308737 and quote ESP. Don’t forget with Christmas fast approaching there are gift packs for the products, so if you know anyone who wants to look amazing during the festive season then treat them to some of the Dermalogica products – we’d definitely recommended it!

“My friends and mum are really supportive but whilst they’re happy for what I’m doing, they keep me really grounded – I’m just the same Becks.”
Susan Saunders
When I was writing this article, I couldn’t get the lyrics ‘shine bright like a diamond’ from Rihanna’s song Diamonds out of my head. eird to open an interview with one person by talking about another you could say, but if you were one of the millions who saw Rebecca Ferguson’s live performance on X Factor, you’ll understand why her sparkly golden outfit inspired such thoughts! She looked totally gorgeous. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely couldn’t pull off such a number, but it certainly caused a bit of a stir on Twitter.
W
Outfits aside, I caught up with Rebecca to talk about her latest single Backtrack, life and – take ’em or leave ’em – men! “You’ve got a good magazine here haven’t you?” Rebecca informed me, whilst scanning over our previous edition of ESP. “I’ve just read it and it’s really good!” A good start to proceedings there then… So clearly life’s been busy since Rebecca finished as runner up in the 2010 series of X Factor but what has life become in the two years since the show? “I’ve been touring, doing some bits in Europe, getting back in the studio in time for the deluxe album release and Backtrack and another single that’s out after that before the end of the year. I’ve had the O2 and iTunes festivals and then Germany to do some TV over there and in America.” It’s all go!
26
www.espmag.co.uk
Having had the pleasure of a good old listen to the single Backtrack, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Not that I didn’t think it would be great, however this lovely Liverpudlian singer’s latest track sounds very much like the Rebecca Ferguson that we know and love, with a hint of Adele too. Nice. “Backtrack’s about when you’re with a guy and it’s all going really well and then they back track.” Who can’t relate to that? “It’s a bit quirky, which I like. My inspiration for it was life really, through past relationships with people who’ve been dishonest and cheating. I was trying not to feel too sad when I was singing it as it’s an upbeat, feel good, quirky track but with meaningful lyrics.” Could this be partly about Rebecca’s ex, One Direction’s Zayn Malik I wondered? Hmm… And is there a current guy backtracking his way through her life now? “I normally fall head over heels and so at the moment, I just cannot be bothered with it. I’ve got to the point where I just think no! The right one will come along when it’s the right time.” Rebecca told me she’s maintained several links with the X Factor class of 2010 – “Paige on BBM, Mary on Facebook and every now and again Kate (who’s now engaged!). It’s hard to keep in touch with everyone but we try to as much as we can – X Factor is such
a unique experience, you’re so close, kind of like family, so I think we like to keep in touch when we can.” Not one known for falling out of clubs wasted, I wondered if the ‘good girl’ image was easy to maintain. “Don’t get me wrong, I love going out,” she told me. “This summer, I went to Ibiza with the girls which was fun, but falling out of clubs isn’t really my scene. I like girly nights in with my friends, spending time at home with my family and focusing on my music.” I suppose it wasn’t a big surprise to her family that she’d make it one day as she revealed she’s always been into singing from a very young age. “When I was growing up, all of my spare money from working would go into paying for singing lessons and improving my voice. “My friends and mum are really supportive but whilst they’re happy for what I’m doing, they keep me really grounded – I’m just the same Becks. We go to the same place where we always went to for Sunday roast when I’m back to Liverpool. I live in the country so spending time with the children and the dogs is great and I love a night out too.” I’ve been on a Liverpool night out and know the girls like to dress up to the nines, perhaps more so than any others I’ve seen!
“It’s part of our culture – you can’t be ready for a night out without your rollers and eyelashes on and a fancy dress on – we have our own style and just don’t feel the cold. I went back to Liverpool recently and the girls all looked like they were at the Glamour Awards, which is a good thing!” Back to singing and Ellie Goulding, Tracy Chapman and Ellie Franklin would be up there on Rebecca’s wish list of collaborations… and whilst on the subject of wishes: “In another 20 years I’d like to think that I’d still be singing. I’d definitely always look to be writing music. I’ve been writing since I was a little girl so music will always be quite up there as something I’ll be focusing on.” Any advice for ESP readers thinking about applying for X Factor next year? “If you go on X Factor, make sure you know who you are before you get on that stage. If you copy someone else, there’ll be other variations of that. Definitely better that than trying to be something that you’re not. Like that girl who went on the show imitating Pink. You’ll regret it if not – the camera doesn’t lie.” Rebecca’s single Backtrack and the deluxe edition of her album Heaven are out now. www.rebeccaferguson.com Susan Saunders

Edwards proved it’s still one of the hottest nights out with its regular buzzing weekends and the recent Mixology event in the Red Room with world famous deep house producer & DJ Miguel Campbell was a complete sell out. Miguel even chatted live to Pete Tong on Radio 1 on the night! Photographers were Wayne Williamson and Mitch Brewster. BOTTLE ROCKET COMEDY CLUB This month is the 35th anniversary of the last ever episode of Dad's Army being shown on BBC1. Never Too Old, the final show was broadcast on Remembrance Sunday, November 13, 1977. After nine years, nine series and 80 episodes, 12.5 million people watched Captain Mainwarring and co look straight at the camera and make a toast... 'To Britain's Home Guard'. Now, given the show’s popularity both then and 35 years later, I can't help thinking that 12.5 million viewers was a bit of a poor return. This is a sitcom associated with the 'golden age' of British TV. That era when the nation only had three channels and we're constantly reminded how shows commanded massive audiences and viewing figures compared to these days of multi-channelled programming and catch-up TV online. It wasn't as if people weren't aware it was going to be the last ever episode either. In his biography of the series Graham McCann quotes interviews that appeared in the press and The Radio Times ahead of the broadcast. The BBC's decision to let a show based around the Second World War be shown on Remembrance Sunday was big news at the time and was clearly done to give it the fitting send off it so thoroughly deserved. The Dad's Army writers, cast and crew gave their all in the name of comedy and how did 1977 Britain react? By not bothering. There's an army of Dad's Army

viewers who neglected their duty and didn't watch the best sitcom of the 1970's – and I want names! Obviously, they'll be a lot of 1977 viewers who'll no longer be with us, but there's plenty who still are. The only problem is that a lot of people would refuse to give their name, or would give their name as 'Pike' (like Capt Mainwaring accidentally did in the episode when they captured a German U-Boat crew.) Maybe you think I'm allowing my love of TV comedy to cloud my judgement – but to put this in context, the final episode of one of the finest British sitcoms of all time, got 12.5m viewers in 1977 and last year the final episode of the X Factor got 13.7m viewers! All I know is, there'll never be a corner of England with a statue of Simon Cowell that people can sit next to, so on Remembrance Day 2012, let's all take time to reflect and do what Dad's Army did, and raise a toast to all of Britain's fallen heroes.

RISE OF THE GUARDIANS Released: November 30
With animations being thrown into cinemas like confetti this could well be the first new franchise – outside of the Pixar movies – to reignite the genre once again.
ARGO All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
Released: November 7 One formerly much-maligned Hollywood star is impressively eeking out quite the career behind the camera after previously impressing with Gone Baby Gone and The Town. And Ben Affleck (who also stars) looks to have done it again in this thriller, based on the true story of a seemingly impossible rescue of six Americans from Iran in the 1979 uprising.
Not since Despicable Me and How To Train Your Dragon two years ago – the Dreamworks’ team for this movie is behind the latter – has anything quite caught my attention in a field that’s saturated by sequels and sub-standard gravy train fare.
The immortal team – which also consists of The Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and Sandman – must combine their powers to take on the evil spirit of boogeyman Pitch (Jude Law), who’is up to some dastardly worldconquering trickery.
And this epic adventure looks like it could show some sorely needed innovation as Jack Frost (Chris Pine)
Here’s hoping the imaginative premise is three dimensional, in erm… 3D.

That’s simply down to much bigger innovations from the PES 2013 camp, with PES ‘Full Control’ instantly making it easier to play the game exactly how you want with 100% manual control – coupled with a more complete footballing feel.
Another film garnering early positive feedback is this comedy drama, which co-stars Robert De Niro. After a stint in a mental institution a former teacher (Bradley Cooper) moves back in with his parents to try and reconcile with his wife – until he meets a mysterious girl (The Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence) with problems of her own.

Oscar-winner Colin Firth teams up with another set of Oscar-winners, brothers Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country For Old Men), who are on screenwriting duties with this remake of the 1966 crime caper. Firth stars as a British thief who hires eccentric Texan rodeo queen (Cameron Diaz), to steal a priceless statue from a wealthy widower (Alan Rickman).

But FIFA still has the upper hand as the more complete all-round package – and again it’s pretty much a five-star dead-heat depending on personal preference. FIFA though, had better watch out or PES could rule the footballing gaming roost once again…

FORZA HORIZON (360) Out now A shift in gear allows the talented Forza team to serve up an open-word style version of their all-conquering series – and boy do they deliver. Think Need For Speed or Test Drive Unlimited gameplay crossed with the flawless Forza handling and its beautiful cars – and you have the perfect recipe for a simplistically breathless racer.

Enter the Horizon festival as a rookie and drive your way up the pecking order in a variety of different races – as this totally raises the bar for an entire genre.
DISHONORED (PS3/360/PC) Out now From Bethesda, publisher behind my favourite series of games of all-time Fallout, comes a game that gives an important ingredient gamers crave… choice. Building on games like Deus Ex, linearity is thrown out of the window in this RPG adventure as your approach to your framed-for-murder supernatural-powered hero is taken to the next level.
Thanks for Andy Clucas for reviews of Forza Horizon and XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and contributing to the PES 2013/FIFA 13 football feature.

After the excellent Fable II the franchise has slowly retreated from early brilliance – slightly hampered by Kinect on this occasion. Bizarrely the good news is this is one of the better games to make use of Kinect’s motion controller – as you aim to control magical powers in the world of Albion – but it simply doesn’t work accurately every time making it less satisfying than a controller.
#####
It isn’t meant to be Fable 4 – and is a more linear adventure – but to its credit is arguably in the top five Kinect games made, which in itself is no mean feat.
007: LEGENDS (PS3/360/WIIU/PC) Out now Talking of retreating from early brilliance, the team behind last year’s Goldeneye: Reloaded don’t hit the mark this time round. The surprisingly stealth-less affair deserves plaudits for adding elements from the James Bond generations – from Goldfinger to Die Another Day – but just ends up being a gung-ho affair trying to recreate the gaming gold of the original Goldeneye.

rememBer, rememBer this month is movemBer... Beat It’s that time of year again; moustache season, where men across the country grow gentlemanly facial hair whilst raising bucket loads of cash to increase awareness of prostate cancer and men’s health issues whilst looking dapper all at the same time. Who said men can’t multitask?! My Mo Bro is doing his best to grow his most virile moustache to date and I know that as a Mo Sista I will be doing my utmost to support him in his moustache growing journey by raising awareness as well as eyebrows (please see top of page!) Once you’ve registered at www.movember.com there are a few rules to adhere to:
This month-long celebration of the moustache starts on November 1, where Mo Bro’s (supported by their Mo Sisters of course) start clean shaven and then have the remaining 30 days to grow and groom their moustache. Mo Bro’s basically become a walking billboard for men’s health and raise essential funds for Movember’s health partner – The Prostate Cancer Charity. In 2011 Movember had it’s most successful year raising a hair raising £79.3m and let’s make sure that this hairy movement continues
to grow in 2012 during these 30 days to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health! 2012 is all about discovering the raw hard truths of the past two years and uncovering what it means to be a better man… 2012 is the year of Movember & Sons; encouraging men to seek and share knowledge with friends and family, to take the time to learn their family health history and understand the risks they face. These few simple actions can have a MOmentous impact on the quality and longevity of your life as acting on this knowledge can increase chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.
novemBer’s must Buy Let me introduce you to my must buy for this month… DreamWeave mascara. In a word this mascara is amazing! This is the first mascara in a long time that actually does what it says. This one step, lash extension, magnet mascara gives you the long lashes you’ve always wanted but never been able to get without the help of falsies or pricey extensions. I must admit I was sceptical at first as I wasn’t 100% convinced by the brush but I fell in love with it the first time I tested it and have been using it every day since. It lengthens lashes without clogging or flaking and is surprisingly easy to remove. The silicone formula fibre wraps each individual lash giving a dramatically longer flutter. The magnet formulation locks onto lashes giving you beautifully long eyelashes in one easy step. This mascara has apparently been hailed as ‘eyelash extensions in a tube’ and I’d certainly agree!

•
Firstly, each Mo Bro MUST conduct himself like a true gentleman throughout the event.
•
On October 31 the entire moustache region (including the upper lip and handlebar zone) must be completely shaved.
•
For the duration of Movember no hair shall be allowed to grow in the goatee area – that being any part of the face below the bottom lip.
•
There is to be NO joining of the moustache to sideburns
•
Finally Movember accepts no responsibility for lost jobs, girlfriends, rashes or any adverse food related effects.
And if for some reason people question why you’re growing a moustache tell them you’d love to stay and chat but you really moustache! Happy growing guys…
chapping this winter
Chapping isn’t just the notion that your boyfriend becomes a 1940’s airman, chapping is a danger to lips most high during the winter months. It’s a serious condition whereby lips become very dry and possibly even cracked leaving them sore and unattractive! But fear not ladies and gentlemen, you can learn how to prevent and even cure chapped lips whatever your budget right here… First let’s explore what causes the problem. Lips become chapped because they’re too dry, normally because of exposure to dry air, sunlight, wind, low temperatures and even dust. Allergic reactions can also cause chapped lips and they’re more prone to chapping if your entire body is dehydrated so make sure you drink lots of water. Tempting as it is, do not lick your lips – it just makes them worse! Budget – For those of you on a budget this winter try Carmex original jar, £3.49.This lip tingling formula really helps alleviate the roughness of dry lips. It contains menthol and phenol to help kill germs and speed up the healing process by removing old, dead skin. Pay Day – Khiels Lip Balm # 1 is some pretty amazing stuff. It helps to comfort dry feeling lips whilst offering protection from the drying effects of the wind and cold and even contains SPF4. This really does sink into your lips instead of just rubbing off like others do and is the quickest at sorting out flaky, cracked lips. £9.50 for 15ml. Big Spenders – If you have the cash to splash then La Mer Lip Balm really is a worthwhile lip treat. It’s potent concentration of Miracle Broth containing marine extracts, botanicals and vitamins help to regenerate your delicate lip area. This incredibly hydrating balm softens roughness, relieves dryness and helps heal seriously dry lips. The refreshing, cool mint flavour enhances the comfort it brings. Chapping is definitely A/W 2012’s must NOT have! Whichever remedy you go for this month be sure to beat chapping head on.

PILATES
Ultimate Performace Lifestyle (UPL) is entering the second half of its first year and has rapidly established itself as the place to go for a great range of Pilates classes and professional physiotherapy.
Face of ESP Simona Bajorinaite gave one of the popular Pilates classes a try and even though she’s already in good shape and goes to fitness classes she was surprised how much this worked her core. It’s fantastic for body realignment problems, strengthening weak points as well as improving relaxation. So if you’re struggling with aches and pains this could give you the core stability you need.
Their custom built practice, with state-of-the-art equipment and a large purpose built Pilates studio is based in Orton Southgate and boasts free parking, new specialist Pilates equipment and spacious treatment rooms.
They’ve progressed so well since opening that there’s now a great range of classes throughout the week, at lunchtimes and evenings, so there’s no excuse! In the new year UPL will be adding even more sports specific classes to their timetable to help people like runners and horse riders. All the Pilates
classes are taught by chartered physiotherapist Nazleen Romjon and so you know you’re in good hands. Their sports massage sessions with co-owner Frances Ellis are also proving popular, particularly after the Great Eastern Run. Nazleen also took part in the half marathon as UPL was supporting local charity The Sports Connection Foundation, which works with disadvantaged and critically ill youngsters. Ultimate Performance Lifestyle also offers one to one classes so if you’re suffering with nagging neck or back pain or just want to improve your inner fitness take the plunge and give the girls a call. A PLATEFUL OF COLOUR IN 2012 ESP’s local nutritional expert Karen Devine continues her series on eating a ‘rainbow’ for better health – make sure you have a plateful of colour every meal time and you’ll reap the benefits… I’m sure like me you’ve noticed a large number of pumpkins around lately, especially over the Halloween celebrations. The UK harvest of the pumpkin runs from October – December, however pumpkins are much more than a traditional spooky decoration, they deliver us with many good nutrients needed for health and vitality. The word pumpkin is a Greek word for ‘large melon’! Pumpkins provide us not only with the healthy orange flesh which contains a power house of nutrients including potassium, zinc, magnesium, great fibre and more, it also contains edible seeds (known as ‘pepitas’ – that’s pumpkin seeds to you and me!) which are rich in essential fats, protein, zinc and many other nutrients too. The bright orange colour of pumpkin flesh contains high levels of phytochemicals called
carotenoids (beta and alpha carotenoids ) which have had extensive studies for many years and are said to help provide us with health of the following – Eye health Insulin/glucose support Cardiovascular support Skin health Colon health... and more It also contains good levels of l-tryptophan so may help keep us in good spirits (good during the winter months)! Pumpkin carving time may be over, so rather than turn it into a candle holder scoop out that lovely pumpkin flesh and put it to its proper use this season. You can turn it into some delicious healthy meals such as: Pumpkin soup Add it to muffins, cakes (healthy ones of course) Stews Pancakes… and much more.
And of course keep the seeds to roast so you can throw them into your salads, cakes or into cereals. In health, Karen For more information on health and nutrition visit my website www.karendevine.co.uk

FOOD REVIEW
ANGEL SPICE
2 - 4 High Street, Stilton, Peterborough, PE7 3RA. Tel: 01733 244373 Located in the scenic village of Stilton you’ll find Angel Spice – an authentic Indian restaurant which is ideal for anyone, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We’ve heard some fantastic comments about the food there, so we just had to pop along and try it for ourselves. The owners, Mr Bashir and Tahir Jaks, have years of experience in the restaurant scene, and took over Angel Spice about four years ago. They’ve built up a great reputation for fine food that’s seen customers return again and again with confidence, knowing they’re in for a treat and somewhere they can enjoy a quality experience. We let the experts select the dishes for us, the first being one for those who like their curries hot! Bengal Naga Chilli Chicken is flavoured with specially imported naga chillies, and only a touch of it is used to achieve the heat – just slightly hotter than a Madras. Not only does this dish look fiery, it tasted fiery too, but was very much to my liking with the chicken cooked to perfection with a spicy kick from the chillies.

The next dish was one of the restaurant’s own special creations, incorporating the famous Stilton cheese the village is best known for. You might think this an odd choice as it is an acquired taste for some, however we dare you to try it as we’re convinced you’ll be converted! The Stilton Paneer is a curry with Stilton cheese, spinach, cream and a touch of spice – it’s a mild curry dish which is similar to that of a Korma and is ideal for anyone who can’t handle too much spice. We certainly enjoyed it, and the side of Saffron rice soaked up those flavours perfectly. The waiter then brought out a dish that isn’t on the regular menu – a Chicken Surprise. This dish had succulent pieces of chicken marinated in fresh coriander, garlic, ginger, mustard and garam masala served on a bed of fresh salad. This was a very refreshing dish full of zingy flavours and we finished this off pretty quickly as it was just delicious. Finally we tried the Garlic King Prawns – the prawns were a generous size, seasoned with a touch of fresh garlic, mint, French mustard and olive oil. They tasted lovely and would make the ideal starter. We’d definitely recommend you try out the delicious food at Angel Spice – they also do a great buffet on Sundays from 12noon – 10pm where you can eat as much as you like for just £8.95 per head. Children and
senior citizens pay just £4.95. They prepare up to 40 freshly made dishes which you can choose from, or if Indian isn’t quite your cup of tea then you can opt for some English dishes too. The venue is also ideal for special occasions such as birthdays, office parties, general family celebrations, and as Christmas is fast approaching why not hold your Christmas party there? The restaurant can seat up to 100 people, has a fully licensed bar and caters for vegetarians too. So next time you fancy some delicious Indian food, head over to Angel Spice – you’ll definitely be in for a treat. Lara Johnson

are perfect for everyone, and all the husbands and boyfriends out there love being able to simply show us a photo of their better half and let us create a collection of products that will suit her while they can sit back with a complimentary coffee! They all love the ease…as well as the chance to give something other than the backup ‘bottle of perfume’ they always buy!” We know where we’ll be getting our gifts this year!
Our favourite Peterborough born makeup boutique is getting ready for its first busy festive season on Bridge Street, so we popped along to see what the guys have planned to make the tricky job of finding the perfect gift a pleasure, rather than a chore! Every time we pop into CosmeticsInc. it’s so easy to see why the ladies of Peterborough are really taking to it, and before we even investigate the wide gift selection we just know that anything from the boutique would make a perfect present. David told us – “Makeup and skincare is such a lovely gift to give, it’s the perfect mix of something practical… with just enough luxury to be sure whoever receives it will be over the moon!” The boys have taken all the hard work out of choosing the perfect gift, from ready made gift collections to suit every budget, to a service where you can pop in for a consultation and they’ll send you off with a personalised list of goodies that you can put on your Christmas list to make sure you get what you really want! Gary explained – “While buying makeup for someone else can be tricky, we make it as easy as possible, we always have suggestions of products that
Another service that’s been taking the boutique by storm are the luxury makeovers, for just £10 you can have a tailor made makeup look applied ready for a special occasion, which is great if you’re not too confident with your makeup or you just fancy an extra special look. David told us – “All of our customers love the chance to have a special makeover, it’s not often people take the chance to feel pampered these days, and as every one of our girls tells us, it’s a lot nicer being made up somewhere private rather than in the middle of a department store!” We all think it sounds great, and with all those Christmas parties just around the corner, we’ll all have plenty of reasons to take advantage of Gary and David’s expertise! The best bit though, Gary assured us is – “We never pile on the pressure to buy the products we use, but if you do want to treat yourself we refund the £10 charge if you spend £30, so the makeover is free… and we always take every lady’s personal style into account and never apply anything they’re not comfortable with. We love the dramatic look for parties but we’re just as good at a bit of natural glamour for ladies who prefer it!” We had a great time chatting with the boys, and any opportunity to visit a shop full of makeup is always welcome! Why not pop in and get ready for your next special occasion, or just find out how you can make this Christmas a bit easier.

SPORT LAUREN ‘HITMAN’
HUGHES
As a former Face of ESP lovely Lauren Hughes continues to model for us and promote the magazine but our girl’s always been sporty and bravely risked those gorgeous looks in a white collar boxing match.
PRUFC LADIES DAY IS A WINNER
Lauren’s been boxing training for quite some time and this was her second time in the ring in an amateur competition organised by Vic’s Gym and staged at the Cresset.
The fourth annual Ladies Day at Peterborough Rugby Union Football Club was another great day out and raised even more cash for the Breast Cancer Campaign, so well done girls!
She might be petite but she packs a punch and told ESP she’s loving the sport – “I’m going to keep fighting and training hard. I would love to be able to see how far I could go with the sport. The fight was incredible and I think I made my trainers proud.” Well, she certainly made us proud! If you fancy getting fitter, boxing training (you don’t have to compete!) is a really effective discipline and whether you’re a girl or a guy check out Vic’s Gym in Hampton. They offer boxing circuits, body combat, spinning, personal training and more. Call Vic on 07595 167679.
Over 70 ladies went along to the day at Fortress Fengate this year which was ably organised by the Social Chair and Ladies Captain, Katie Hannam. They all wore something pink and enjoyed a glass of pink fizz on arrival followed by a tasty three course lunch and a raffle. They raised £400, which brings the total raised for the Breast Cancer Campaign by the PRUFC ladies in the past four years to £4,000. On the same day as the Ladies lunch, PRUFC also launched their very own on site gym. Another fundraising lunch (both men and ladies can attend this one!) is taking place later in the year for the British and Irish rugby ‘Wooden Spoon’ Charity, which we’ll keep you posted about, plus get the Christmas Masquerade Ball in your diaries for December 22 which will be in aid of several charities.

If they’re not playing a match, they’ll be training at ‘Fortress Fengate’ on Sunday mornings, but do check they’ve not trekked off to the murky depths of Corby or St Ives before you pop down to enrol. Boro’s under-8 team (motto: “We like eating chocolate cake and hot dogs”) has had a spectacular October, with three trophies from three events.
KIDS TACKLE A BIT OF RUGBY You can’t beat a freshly-cooked bacon roll in beautiful autumnal sunshine on a Sunday morning. And it becomes even more appealing when it means the kids are using up every scrap of energy without you having to chase round after them! So how about encouraging the little ones to take up rugby? It’s a sport in which the key values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship are paramount. Peterborough Rugby Club has an active under-six group and teams playing regular matches from under-seven up to under-16. It’s mixed up to the under-12s and there are

Head coach Simon Potter told ESP – “Our top priority is to make sure the lads – and lass – have fun, and I think we do a pretty good job at that. Winning trophies isn’t our main aim, but it’s fun, and we love doing it. “We’re always open to new recruits, and so is every other age group at Fengate. Rugby’s a game for people of all different shapes and sizes and the under-7s and under-8s play it as a non-contact game. The first day I set foot in the place I was struck by what a friendly atmosphere there is here, and I’ve loved every minute of it since.” If you fancy having someone else cook you bacon rolls on Sunday mornings while your children enjoy a wholesome new hobby, check out www.prufc.com to find out more.

Stamford CALLING THEATRE LOUNGE OPENS IN STYLE ESP went along to the launch night when local chef Thierry Daugeron and his team did a fantastic job catering for around 70 diners for the first time. The set menu gave a tantalising taste of his delicious meals and didn’t disappoint. It was a great start to this new restaurant which is set to make ‘dinner and a show’ a real treat. Thierry has also taken on the Riverside Café so has already had a hectic few weeks but now has Christmas party nights planned in December at the Theatre Lounge so won’t be resting any time soon! LARGEST ALPINESTARS STORE IN THE UK
Welcome to this month’s bikers’ news feature brought to you by Wheels Motorcycles.
Demonstration machines of each model will be available as soon as possible.
With 2013 just around the corner here at Wheels Motorcycles we are eagerly awaiting the launch of several new models. Kawasaki seem to be leading the way with not one but three new additions to their exciting range. Firstly they plan to take the mid-range sports bike crown with their stunning new ZX6R. With the engine back to the much loved 636cc capacity this really could be the answer to your “one bike for all” questions. With its styling lifted from its world superbike ZX10R and the added safety benefit of traction control the ZX6R should be at the top of your Christmas list.
For those who prefer a more classic styled machine then the 2013 Z800 will be right up your street. Based on the iconic Z series the new Z800 is sure to be a winner with older and younger riders alike.
Lastly but by no means least comes a pocket rocket to bring a smile to anyone’s face. Small is definitely cool with the launch of the ZX300 Ninja! Big bike handling and surprising power from the 296cc engine should push this bike straight to the front of the pack.

Musicalize at the
Peterborough Arena We’ve all been crying out for more top bands to appear in the city and the recent Musicalize gig saw plenty of talent perform live at the Peterborough Arena. ESP’s Susan Saunders went back stage… boys are typically fit so we wouldn’t mind! You’re gorgeous!” Blushing and swiftly moving on! What’s next? “We’re honing our brand at the moment and focusing on our single right now. It’s really exciting and fun.
he stage was set, the vocal chords were warmed and after sound checks, VIP meet and greets and squeezing past security (there were a fair few stars in the mix), I managed to grab some time with some of the celebs on the line-up… It’s a hard job but somebody has to do it!
T
First on my interview hit list was BBC’s The Voice finalist, Max Milner who told me – “It’s great to be in Peterborough. I’ve been here before because I have a mate who lives in Spalding. I’ve never got out of the station before but still.” What’s it been like since The Voice? “This year’s been crazy and perfect. I’ve managed to do what I want to do singing wise, getting to write and sing songs for a living, which is everything I’ve really wanted to do – it’s all good. “I’ve been writing with my boy Robbie (who was performing with him that evening) on writing new material – loads of material has been written and recorded since The Voice. I’m not rushing though; I don’t want to bring anything out that’s not perfect.” And is Danny as handsome in the flesh as on camera (The Script’s Danny O'Donoghue was Max’s team leader) – oh come on, you love it! “Ha, he is! What do you think that the cameras lie? He’s a lovely, incredible man – he’s amazing. I have a lot of respect for him.” Another Voice star I caught up with was soul man Jaz Ellington, who after singing from strength to strength in Will.I.Am’s team on the show, was later eliminated in the live show stages. “My year’s been a rollercoaster, a good rollercoaster that I’d ride on all the time,” he revealed. “From going on The Voice, to our new baby boy and gigging all up and down the country.
48
www.espmag.co.uk
“The Voice was nuts. It was iconic and a platform for me. I learnt loads of things, like a boot camp for things that you really want to do and working with Will.I.Am working in close proximity with Jessie J – it was totally nuts. “You’re there every day so you have to come out of work to rehearse every day, doing choreography, meetings, filming video clips – it’s full on. You have to try hard not to lose your voice. You’re tired and everything so you have to remain positive because you’re learning so much. It’s definitely a once in a lifetime experience.” Not being one to enjoy being confined to one place for too long – ‘No-one puts baby in the corner’ – I ventured through into the unknown realms of the ‘meet and greet’ circus where I caught up with cheeky Britain’s Got Talent stars, The Loveable Rogues – Eddie, Sonny and Té – who since taking the show (finishing fourth) and Britain, by storm have since been signed by Mr Music Mogul himself, Simon Cowell. I think he might be onto a winner. “Since the show we’ve been gigging nonstop and working on material for our album that we’re hoping to bring out next year,” the boys told me. “So we came back from Warrington today – it’s a hoot. You don’t get much crazier than Warrington; it was such a good gig. Everyone loved us up there! We got notes on our car saying ‘please follow us on Twitter’, which we’re going to do – we’re nice like that!” The boys were certainly a handful to try and chat to – let’s say they live up to their name – and asking if they were single set them off once again! “Yeahhhhh. Are you?” Errrr! Sugar mamma, definitely not a topic I want to take up right now! “But we like a bit of sugar and toy
“We’re excited to be here tonight because just before BGT, we went to see a Musicalize gig at the O2 in London so it’s great to be part of the gig. We’re singing Honest, which we sang in the BGT final, a Scouting For Girls cover, Posh Girls, Some Would Say You Love Me, which I’m sure you might say later… (eeek!) and then Love Sick.” I certainly had to compose myself after my Loveable Rogues experience and my last, but by no means least highlight of the evening was local young singer and last year’s Peterborough’s Got Talent winner, Samm Coward.
Max Milner
Then aged just 12 (now aged 13), Samm gave Peterborough its first taste of his exceptional voice. Not satisfied with impressing his vocal ability on us, he set his sights on teaching himself the guitar after buying his first with the winnings from the competition. Samm also writes his own songs, which are going to be huge hits judging by the hordes of screaming (and I mean screaming) fans that adorned the front of the stage as he took to it like a true pro. I wondered if I’d entered some teenage daydream of Beiber heaven! But was it daunting for our young star?
Samm Coward from Peterborough
“No, not at all, it was actually quite funny!” he grinned. Impressed at Samm’s ability to take it all in his stride, it’s no surprise he’s since made it through to the Open Mic UK’s regional finals and could be performing at the O2. So how did his Musicalize appearance come about?
Jaz Ellington
“I put some stuff on Facebook and YouTube and the gig organisers, Musicalize, spotted me from that. Mum gave them a call and they said they’d already spotted me.” Well I wish him well on what is set to be an amazing adventure. My prediction is that Ed Sheeran should really watch out!

WANTED: SOUL & MOTOWN SINGER
Allen Adams back in the day
The festival season’s well and truly over now and after a month’s rest in a dark corner with a damp copy of NME over my head, it’s time to get myself back chatting to some of the good folk that shape the music of our city and make it a great place to be musically… Black. A few name changes and line up changes led to what he describes as the classic Destructors line up – “1980-83 were the years we had Gizz Butt on guitar, well he was Graham back then but I thought he looked like Gizzard Puke so I called him Gizz and it stuck!”
It’s difficult to gauge on first meeting whether Allen Adams is a genius, crazy, insane or an insane genius. Or is he something else? Perhaps he is a sharp witted, clever songwriter whose life observations have fuelled his manic lyric writing. Having known Allen a long time I’d say this is the truer version of the man. Having been a founding member, sometime bass player and latterly front man of the iconic Peterborough punk band the Destructors, he more than most can define perseverance. The Destructors over the years have appeared on 38 albums, sometimes with just a single, or albums of their own, so their 36 year career has been productive. Started in 1976 by Pete Wells (whose market stall led to House On The Borderline under English Rose Tattooists) got a group of guys together as 6CK 6CK 6CK . Allen was joined by TW Attereson (!) Stuart Bland and Graham
50
www.espmag.co.uk
The band had memorable nights with Discharge (the band not a medical problem) who they supported at Cottesmore Village Hall – “They wrecked the place,” Allen recalls, “it was quite scary!” That was around 1980. The Destructors went on to tour in 1982 with another great punk band, GBH, hitting the bright lights of The Lyceum, The Apollo in Manchester and Oxford and the Top Rank in Cardiff, heady days indeed. After a long tour of Europe and a few line up changes which included Peterborough luminaries such as Dave Colton, Joe McColl, Steve Rolls and Fazz Farrow the band ceased playing in 1984, probably as much a sign of the changing music scene as anything else. Fast forward to 2006 and the band returned as Destructors 666. “Maybe this was just so we could get an album release out on the 6/6/6,” says Allen. “Slayer were trying to do it but we did it! They didn’t get their’s out until 7/6/6.” After a few spilt collaborations with younger bands in the city, Allen decided that a good side project would be the This Is Peterborough album which features young bands of that time – expect number four shortly. He’s also inspired enough to make themed albums – “In October I write horror songs, our last album of horror songs won a magazine award
for best of the year. In November I write World War songs and December, yep Christmas songs. My latest project is a pirate album, Skull Thuggery, it’s even got sea shanties on it!” Allen loves being in a band, that’s the whole point of this mad journey across five decades. “I have 7,500 sets of lyrics ready to work on, I wake up and I have a line of a song in my head it’s like I write them in my sleep.” The duality of sanity and insanity is sometimes an acute observation of character and with Allen Adams I still have moments when I doubt myself which side of the line he is at any one time. Then you put on a Destructors album and the old school, proper punk, full of witty lyrics and driving rhythms reminds you that he’s still 17 in his head, nothing more, nothing less and in my book that’s a mighty fine place to be for any man. The Destructors still gig now and then and release albums for fun, the next one being 12/12/12…it had to be didn’t it?! Checkout their website for details www.destructors666.com
A NIGHT FOR PAUL Having lost a true friend and gentleman in Paul Chatham earlier this year it’s great to see that his life will be celebrated in A Night For Paul organised by his good friend Dave Houlden. Similar in format to Pete Carter’s tribute night Dave’s organised a cracking line up and sound system. The Lloyd Watson Band, The Mighty Quinn, The Electric Warriors, The Davison Woods Band and The Dizzy Miss Lizzies all take the stage in what is an eclectic mix of some of the city’s finest musicians. I shall be compering the proceedings and badgering you ever so slightly into parting with a few quid in aid of the British Lung Foundation while Colin Smith will be providing a massive sound and light rig to ensure that the talent on stage sound spectacular. It’s at the PSL club on Lincoln Road, New England on Friday December 7 and it’s only £5 in advance or £6 on the door. Tickets are from Dave on 07551 328830. Paul Chatham was a very special man and did so much for musicians and the live scene in Peterborough. I’m sure he’d appreciate a big turn out to celebrate his wonderful life knowing that all money raised will go to the British Lung Foundation. If we ask the editor ever so nicely she may even send the ESP team down to paparazzi the event!

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
I’ve just finished a stint hosting The 70’s Show at the Cresset and it highlighted to me, yet again, what a huge amount of musical talent we have in this area. The show was put on by locally based Emcee Productions (Colin ‘Citizen’ Smith and partner Monique Benoitton) who produce a very impressive sound and light show and once again used a live band instead of the safer option of prerecorded backing tracks for 25 songs. The decision paid off because the high quality musicians blended with talented singers and dancers on stage to create an atmospheric show.
Two popular local bands are getting together at the end of November, for a unique evening of traditional and inspired original music called Acoustic Routes from across both sides of the Atlantic. It features self compositions as well as some well known standards that hail from England, Ireland and across the water to America.
Congratulations to all involved!
It promises to be a lively evening from start at 8pm, to finish on Friday November 30. The venue is Kings Cliffe Village Hall which should add to the folky atmosphere. There’s no bar, but you can take your own drinks and nibbles. Tickets are available by phoning 07875 192054 or from Kings Cliffe Village Post Office, and on the door.
The Malingerers
ACOUSTIC ROUTES @ KINGS CLIFFE
The Malingerers, who specialise in original old time country blues, form part of the double header bill. The six piece band wowed the Saturday crowd at the Peterborough Beer Festival last year and their music has been included on Radio 2 shows by Mark Lamarr and Bob Harris. Anything rated by Whispering Bob has got to be considered worthwhile listening to. The other half of the bill is occupied by Pennyless. This popular trio consisting of vocals from Penny Stevens (fiddle) Les Woods (guitar) and Graham Dale (flute) have a busy workload bringing folk to audiences at festivals and pubs around the country.
HOUNDOGS HIT HYDE PARK
ASHTON MUSIC WEEKEND
Congratulations to local rockabilly band The Houndogs who’ve secured a top gig at London’s Hyde Park Winter Wonderland 2012.
Those who have been to the Chequered Skipper Pub in Ashton near Oundle will know that it’s the very pub that used to host the World Conker Championships. It was a splendid setting for the uniquely British pastime. In November a more popular pastime is coming to the pub with a music weekend in aid of Neuroendocrine NET Cancer Day. Landlord Mark Zwanziger, has organised the event to take place between November 9 – 11 and has assembled a great line up. The music festival kicks off on Friday evening with bands such as Heavy Hearts, We Sell Tigers, Band Name Generator and The Space Between, taking to the stage. Saturday afternoon will be open mic acoustic followed by a lively evening with an appearance from local band Crafty Jack. Finally Sunday, brings another open mic session to close the weekend. There’ll be lots to eat and drink throughout the weekend including 10 real ales and good pub food. It’s all to raise awareness of NET and the music added to the beautiful setting of the Chequered Skipper and Ashton Green will prove a worthwhile visit during that weekend.

LOOK OUT FOR SOME WILD HONEY
As lead guitarist with rhythm and blues band Dr Feelgood, Johnson and the famous band have been credited as one of the founding influences of the British punk movement. The guitarist's eye-popping thousand-yard stare inspired rebellion and aggression in the likes of John Lydon, Paul Weller, Suggs and Joe Strummer.

I’ve seen their name outside a couple of venues but not been able to see them live yet. However I’m sure they’ll add some further variety to the local music scene so if you catch them before me, let me know what you think.
