NOVEMBER FILMS @ THE JOHN CLARE ARTS CINEMA

15 Cowgate, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, PE1 1LZ t: 01733 306999 e: peterborough@reedsrains.co.uk

As the nights draw in the best place to be is inside watching a good film and this November The John Clare Arts Cinema gives you the chance to do exactly that every Thursday! First up on Thursday November 7 is Reality an Italian film directed by Matteo Garrone. The film takes a darkly comic look at Luciano, a charming and affable fishmonger whose unexpected and sudden obsession with being a contestant on the reality show Big Brother leads him down a rabbit hole of skewed perceptions and paranoia. So overcome by his dream of being on reality TV, Luciano's own reality begins to spiral out of control, making for one of the most compelling tragicomic character studies since Scorsese's The King of Comedy. Next on Thursday November 14 is Robot & Frank starring Frank Langella, Liv Tyler and Susan Sarandon. The querulous Frank is in the early stages of dementia and at odds with a changing world and is not best pleased when his son gives him a gleaming white robot to care for him. But gradually a strange friendship grows up between the criminally minded man and ethical machine, as Frank returns to burglary with the robot as his smart new accomplice. On Thursday November 21, French film In The House arrives at the John Clare Cinema. Set in a secondary school in an unidentified French town where the intense, prissy, humourless Germain teaches literature. Germain despises most of his fellow teachers for their conventional thinking and despairs of his pupils for their uniformity and lack of imagination. Suddenly, Germain discovers a gifted pupil, the 16-year-old Claude (the handsome newcomer Ernst Umhauer), who turns in an essay on ‘What I did last week’. Finally Thursday November 28 sees the turn of 2013 film – No. In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the ‘no’ campaign persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot's minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free. www.peterboroughartscinema.co.uk. www.espmag.co.uk

Chantelle Watson, centre manager, told ESP – “Rylan is going to really add a sparkle to this year’s lights switch on – we can’t wait to welcome him to Serpentine Green.” See our full coverage on www.espmag.co.uk.

Kicking off the festive fun this season, Queensgate will be hosting their Christmas light switch on, on Friday November 15.

GIFT BUYING SEWN UP @ CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN THE CITY

See our full coverage on www.espmag.co.uk.

Everyone’s favourite Peppa Pig will be switching on the Christmas lights as well as making personal appearances at 2pm, 3pm, 4pm and 5pm, giving children the chance to see the country’s most famous character.

This year there will be a series of specialist markets being held in the lead up to Christmas which should make gift buying a whole lot easier... or you might even find a few things for your own wish list for Santa!

Heart FM’s Heart Angels will be adding to the merriment with festive songs and a Christmas Creation station, which includes face painting, card making and letters to Santa from 2pm – 6pm in Central Square. Heart FM will start the big countdown from 6pm, alongside Peppa Pig and Father Christmas, lighting Queensgate up for Christmas.

First of all it’s a Tunisian market running from November 6 – 9 on Bridge Street. There’ll be more exotic items on offer when the popular Berber market returns with Moroccan themed goods from December 1 – 27 in Cathedral Square.

Father Christmas will be spreading his merry cheer throughout Queensgate until Christmas Eve in his very own grotto, located in North Square. The grotto officially opens after the light switch on so just head to North Square to book little shoppers in for an early Christmas present or photo with Father Christmas, for £4.50 each. Sam Eastwood, centre director at Queensgate, told ESP – “Following a fantastic year at Queensgate, we are really looking forward to our light switch on, which attracts shoppers from all over the region and always proves to be popular with our shoppers. “This year, with our beautiful decorations, the return of Father Christmas and his fantastic grotto, plus the arrival of Peppa Pig, it looks to be our biggest and best Christmas yet.” During the festive season Queensgate is extending its opening hours. From now on the centre’s open until 6pm on weekdays, with late night shopping on Thursday and Friday until 8pm. From December 2 through to December 23, the centre will be open even later, allowing visitors to shop until 9pm and enjoy free parking weeknights after 5.30pm*. In the run up to the big day, Queensgate will also open an extra hour every Saturday until 7pm, and will remain open until 8pm on Saturday December 21. For all those last minute shoppers, the centre will be open from 8am – 8pm on December 23 and 8am – 5pm on December 24. (*Free parking valid from 5.30pm until 11.30pm from December 2 until December 23). See our full coverage on www.espmag.co.uk.

Expect a range of unique and unusual items at the craft market on December 7 on Bridge Street.

And that’s not just because the exhibits include our very own Man About Town’s chopper bike! The Forty Years On exhibition has been a long time in the making with hours of interviews and research pulling together some fascinating stories of life in the

Remember the Roy Kinnear Roman centurion ‘Peterborough effect’ TV adverts? Sodastream? Ever played The Game of Peterborough board game? Can you recall what the city centre looked like before Queensgate?

We guarantee if you’ve lived here for a while you’ll find some real nostalgia and if you’re a relative newcomer you’ll gain a better understanding of what makes Peterborough the city it is today. The exhibition runs through until January next year so make sure you drop by. See and read more on www.espmag.co.uk

TALKSPORT STAR LAUNCHES BOOK IN THE BORO - IS HE ALL THAT? Yes he is! Peterborough’s very own Adrian Durham, former news and sport reporter on Hereward FM, now drive presenter on talkSPORT radio returned to the city to help launch his first book, Is He All That? and fittingly the lifelong Posh fan held his book signing at the Peterborough United Club Shop. Never one to hold back on his opinions the former Deacons’ schoolboy who’s Peterborough born and bred, has had some lively debates about his biggest passion and there’s no doubt his first book will cause even more. “I wanted to do a football book but I didn’t want to concentrate on one particular thing,” Adrian told ESP. “In effect it’s like a reference book, a history book an alternative history of football, and it’s full of opinions about football and different aspects of football. There’s something in there for everybody and that’s what I was trying to do.” Fans queued up to grab a copy including one Barry Fry who Adrian’s had many a debate with over the years! “I am a lifelong Posh fan and the opportunity for the first signing to be here at London Road on a match day – that’s pretty special to me,” said Adrian. “It’s the first ground I came to when I was six, it’s why I fell in love with football and Posh. It means a lot to me.”

TIME TO GET MY CHOPPER OUT I’m always looking for an excuse to get my Chopper out and you can imagine how excited I was when the Forty Years On project asked if they could put it on display at their recently opened exhibition in Peterborough Museum. Although my Raleigh Chopper is a later model with a split seat and handle grip gears, the bike’s every bit a throwback to the 1970s when our city was in the midst of rapid expansion, which began in 1968 when we were designated as a ‘new town.’ The Forty Years On exhibition, which is a result of a partnership between the Vivacity Archives Service and Eastern Angles Theatre Company, runs until the start of the New Year (January 12).

NO SLAP MEANS TICKLE In an age of increasing infidelity it’s no wonder that a survey by Superdrug revealed women wait 29 days on average before they let their boyfriend see them without make-up. On day 30 he’s already sniffing around another bird.

DISCO CUP IN MEMORY OF ANDO Golf – a pastime I’ve yet to succumb to but it was one that my dear and departed friend Ando Todisco used to play with all the other ‘mushes’. In memory of Ando, 15 ‘golfers’ played in the inaugural Disco Cup last month and I’m pleased to hear it was a great success with Tony ‘shovel thumbs’ Diiorio claiming winning honours. Better still, this event is to be a biannual one from 2014 and it’ll be raising money for the British Heart Foundation. Well done boys. Maybe it’s time I got one of those stick things and tried hitting a gobstopper too.

If you work in town and fancy a change to wasting a lunch hour with a £25 cup of coffee in one of the high street coffee chains, try this exhibition and the museum’s coffee shop. You won’t be disappointed.

It’s the annual International Motorcycle Show in Milan (November 5 to 10) and what I love about it the most, which is typically Italian, is that it’s free admission for women on the Friday. All the leading motorcycle brands will be there including Italian favourites Ducati and Aprilia. I’m tempted to ride there myself on either the Aprilia Tuono I’m pictured on or the Ducati Mulitstrada TJ has his leg over, but both have been prepped ready for the showroom at Balderston.

Created true to the spirit of café racers, the R nineT embodies emotion and authentic traditional looks and offers a unique mix of classic and modern design. It comes with a brushed aluminium tank and panels, twin-stacked exhaust pipes and forged aluminium parts. Best of all it’s powered by the excellent 1170cc air-cooled Boxer twin engine.

You can also see TV adverts that featured the famous Roman Centurion Roy Kinnear and to listen to radio adverts, which were part of a media campaign to attract newcomers to Peterborough.

Forty Years On is well worth a visit and top marks to the team that have helped bring our recent, most important past to life. The exhibition brings back warm memories of my childhood and of how things use to be.

It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it. Balderston sales supremo TJ has been tasked with having to go to Italy where he must eat and drink like a king and drool over hundreds of motorbikes that’ll no doubt be modelled by dozens of leathered up blondes in stilettos.

What I might do instead is fly over with TJ and – since I’ll be in Italy – make BMW an ‘offer they couldn’t refuse’ that’ll mean riding back on the new R nineT Classic Roadster. We won’t see this gorgeous looking bike here until March but I don’t think I can wait that long.

The visitor experience is all about sampling local life in the late 60s and 70s with the help of iconic items, including my bike, a Soda Stream drinks maker and games that were manufactured in local factories, along with original documents, maps and photographs which depict this exciting time in our city’s history.

One quirky touch is the ability to listen to audio clips on an original 1970s office telephone of long-term residents and people that relocated here from across the UK and the Commonwealth as part of the mass migration to Peterborough.

TJ OFF TO THE MOTHERLAND

CAUGHT IN THE ACT!

Contraception aga inst the elements at the Perkins Great Eas tern Run.

You’ll be able to customise this bike to your heart’s content and it’ll easily be the best looking classic roadster on the market. So, I’ll be trying my utmost to get my hands on one otherwise it’ll be March before I can have my wicked way with the R nineT on our B-roads. Please God let me win the lottery so I can place my order!

WHO’S THE JOSEPH? Chico delighted the crowds at last year’s Christmas lights switch-on event in Cathedral Square and it looks like the person flicking on this year’s switch alongside the Mayor and leader of the council isn’t going to be revealed until the day itself. Word is the mystery celebrity doing the honours will also that night be announced as the new Joseph (And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), which will be playing at The Broadway Theatre from December 17. I wonder who it is?!

>> Dave – you need to sort your church clobber out >> ‘Lettuce leaf’ – great PB. Spread the word! >> Lorenzo – thanks for the logs! >> Rob – take Homer and Meg for a walk >> Chris, Emma and Chris – thanks for the photos! >> Keith – want a lunchtime guest?

GLOVES OFF WITH HOLMES AND HATTON One of my favourite heavyweight boxing champions, Larry Holmes, is the next big name to star at Kevin Sanders’ boxing dinners (November 24) – and Ricky Hatton has also been booked for 2014. Holmes ranks as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and fans will be able to get a personal insight into some of his career highlights at The Solstice this month. My earliest memory of Holmes was when he lost to Michael Spinks in 1985 and with it the opportunity to re-write history by matching Rocky Marciano’s 49-fight unbeaten run.

Camra Pub of the Year 2011 Ploughman Winter

Beer Festival

Holmes was sparring partner to Muhammad Ali (whom he beat at the end of Ali’s career) and etched his name as one of the greats during the late 1970s and early 80s when the heavyweight division was brimming with proper talent with the likes of Shavers, Norton, Ali and Witherspoon. Ricky Hatton will be in town on February 20 – again at The Solstice – and this boxing dinner is sure to be a sell-out too. ‘The Hitman’ was one of Britain’s most popular and brave boxers who never ducked a fight. He’s a former WBA, IBF and IBO welterweight champion and retired for good after a comeback fight 12 months ago. Tickets for both dinners are available from Kevin Sanders on 01733 371912 or 07872 601467.

THE PLOUGHMAN Staniland Way Werrington Centre PE4 6NA 01733 327696 I normally highlight one local hero to focus on every month but on this occasion I’m referring to the 5,000-strong participants of the Perkins Great Eastern Run who demonstrated what our inner heroes are made of by completing this excellent annual event in torrential rain. Hero acknowledgement is deserved all around here. First of all to the small team of council officers who worked tirelessly for almost a year, putting strain on themselves and their work-life balance to ensure the PGER was going to be executed to the highest of standards. Then, supporting the council as organisers, were the dozens of volunteers that make up the running advisory group who helped steer the event in the right direction. Principal sponsors Perkins and all the other sponsors involved also deserve a mention, as without their support Peterborough wouldn’t be able to put on a sporting event of such magnitude and reputation. But it was on the day when the passion, commitment and determination of all these groups shone through. Organisers were

practically soaked to the skin all day long and not once did any of the volunteers along the route, whether they were marshalling road closures or manning water stations, look like there was another place they’d rather be. The rain wasn’t about to deter the huge majority of runners and in some ways the difficult conditions served to actually spur them on to set out what they turned out on the Embankment to achieve. Hundreds of runners recorded their personal best times and thousands of runners raised thousands of pounds for worthy causes. There was an infectious vibe created that day. Dozens of spectators still lined the streets in support of the runners and more than 100 people have already entered the race for 2014. Peterborough does events very well and on a day like this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run I was proud and happy to be walking home after a hard day’s work, soaked and with the loss of feeling in my fingers and toes.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

WHATEVER

A survey by OnePoll found that ‘whatever’ is one of the words Brits hate the most. That’s because it’s replaced swearwords as an unsavoury and alternative response to a statement or question. Some classic examples where ‘whatever’ is used to reply instead of an expletive: “Why don’t you ever listen to me?” “Isn’t it time you got a job?” “You won’t win anything with David Moyes.” “Isn’t it time you went on a diet?” “You haven’t got a clue about commitment.”

GREAT EASTERN RUN Peterborough – you did yourselves proud once again and truly put the ‘great’ into this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run. From the runners to the event organisers, the fun runners in their crazy outfits to the supporters who cheered them on in the rain – we at ESP salute you! This year’s PGER was the biggest to date with 20% more entries into the half marathon and a massive 85% more sign ups to the Anna’s Hope fun run. Organised by the city council’s commercial operations department, the small team of officers pulled off yet another superb event (earning BARR Gold grade status once again) which thousands of runners turned out for in appalling weather. The on-the-day dropout was still in line with the national average for half marathons – and that’s in good weather conditions. ESP’s very own Mikey Clarke and video reporter Lorenzo Monteforte were among those raising money for charity and successfully completed the run in aid of Arthritis Research UK – well done guys! Online entries are open for 2014 and the race is likely to reach capacity numbers for the first time so sign up now. Why not sign up friends and family as Christmas presents and encourage them to keep that New Year’s resolution to get fit? dog flavoured

pizza! S

ome are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon 'em…like a piping hot takeaway pizza delivered to your doorstep. All of which brings me to the latest advertising campaign by Domino’s Pizzas. I'm sure you'll have seen it by now. Pizza delivery boy rides moped with an order of a hot dog filled stuffed crust pizza to customer’s house, accompanied by the lyrics of a song about a horse, with the advert ending in a silhouette of the moped pulling a wheelie, as the new Domino’s strapline 'Greatness from Dominos' is sung to the tune of Champion the Wonder Horse. Now there are many things in the world of popular culture in 2013 that can claim 'greatness'. Mo Farah winning double gold at the Athletics World Championships, the latest series of Breaking Bad or The Rolling Stones’ Glastonbury performance to name just a few – but definitely not a company stuffing a pizza crust with reconstituted meat and ripping-off a TV theme from the 1970s to promote it. That’s lameness, and possibly laziness, but definitely not greatness because surely at no point has anyone ever eaten a pizza and thought – 'Do you know what would really improve this? A tin of hot dog meat shoved into the crust. I'm off to Aldi to get a tin for 18p!' Because if there's one type of meat guaranteed to ruin a pizza then I’d think it's the tinned hot dog meat variety. I'll admit the idea of stuffing the crust of a pizza with meat is a good one – but unless it's steak don't bother! Secondly, there's nothing like a good song parody to make you laugh, and this is nothing like a good song parody. All they've done is change the song's title – that’s definitely lame. Plus if you're in charge of choosing a song to advertise a hot dog stuffed pizza, following the stampede of horse-meat in food stories this year, surely you'd steer clear of any songs connected to horses, especially a much loved, but ultimately very dead fictional TV one. It'd be like a supermarket advertising frozen lasagne with the theme tune to Black Beauty. Who's in charge of marketing at Domino’s? Frankie Dettori…? Clare Balding…?

T

aking a coat 'just in case' is now becoming a distant memory, winter’s on the way and leaving the house without layers on results in hugging yourself to keep warm! The thought of layering can sometimes bring a sweat on in itself but don't stress too much as this month I've shown how some of your key summer looks can be shifted straight through to this season. Thanks to the ever changing British weather it’s hard for us to put away summer or winter clothing but layering up will make use of our mixed up wardrobes. Shift dresses are fantastic for layering either by wearing a longer sleeve T-shirt underneath or throwing on a jumper over the top to create a skirt and jumper effect and then just add a pair of thick tights and boots.

All those summer T-shirts can be used as a layer to create contrast to a shorter box style jumper over the top. The same goes for you guys too... obviously not the shift dresses part! Layer up your T-shirts under jumpers and wear jumpers under thicker shirts that can be worn as lightweight coats. There are some absolutely beautiful coats out at the minute that should complement your look beautifully. So this winter embrace leaving the house in the sunshine and coming home in snow – with all your season’s layers on you'll be dressed appropriately whatever the weather! Natasha Fierro

STARS ON BROADWAY One of the most amazing theatre seasons is starting in Peterborough. ESP editor Sharon McAllister meets the man helping turn the lights back on at the Broadway Theatre... among those who missed out, you can be assured that this guy is on your side! So much so he’s set aside hundreds of tickets for the first few shows of Evita on a pay what you can basis available 90 minutes prior to the show.

Bill Kenwright is a producer, director and theatre man through and through. His passion for the business shines through when you talk to him and to Bill there’s nothing worse than an empty theatre. Ken outside the Broadway Theatre

I

f you hadn’t quite realised the new season at The Broadway is a unique one – some of the hottest shows running week after week is a series like no other elsewhere in the country. Marti Pellow followed by Will Young, the legend that is Tommy Steele and the West End favourite Blood Brothers. This is WOW on the scale of theatre seasons folks so we hope you won’t miss out! For those who were stung by the last company to try to run the Broadway and lost money on tickets for shows that never opened it’s likely there’ll be some reservations about supporting this latest season. However with top theatre producer Bill Kenwright CBE himself

22

www.espmag.co.uk

“It’s like a church, if it’s buzzing and vibrant it’s a great place to be – it’s a bit sad if there’s no one there. A theatre needs people. “It’s extraordinary to me what happened. I don’t know the ins and outs of it but I know people were badly let down. I had shows that I wasn’t paid for so I was part of that nightmare.” Bill says there was no grand plan. Bringing his shows to Peterborough came out of a conversation about what had happened and somehow it all just fell into place that he was able to bring the productions together to make up this impressive run. “It’s such a buzz,” says Bill. “It’s as much a buzz for me as it is for anyone else,” and you can tell by the sparkle in his eye that it truly is.

“At the end of the day we cannot make money – it’s impossible during this first 12 weeks. But at the end of the day if we could re-establish this theatre it would be great. “The second greatest sight in the world, the first is the ball hitting the back of the net, (Bill is Chairman of Everton FC) is a queue at the box office and I’ve been watching people coming in today and the box office staff talking to the punters – I’ve always loved that personal touch. “The only hurdle we’ve had is restoring

and Will Young and can’t wait to bring a new Joseph to the city. There will be incredible sets and the same fantastic production values you’d get in the West End. So when the curtain falls on this incredible season what then? “It would be going too far to say I’ve got further plans but it’s just a given that I don’t do anything for 12 weeks. But I’ve got 19 shows on around the world, I’ve got a football club you know – let’s just see how this goes.

“I really don’t want to own a theatre but if I can help this theatre live a little it would be great.” the confidence of the people of Peterborough but the council and Vivacity have been fantastic – nothing’s been too much trouble.” Bill seems as excited as theatregoers, enthusing about the stunning Michael Morpurgo (War Horse) production The Butterfly Lion and of course his rock ’n’ roll favourites Dreamboats and Petticoats and Save The Last Dance For Me. He’s a huge fan of Tommy Steele, has great admiration for Marti Pellow

“Would I be surprised if the adventure didn’t continue – yes. I would hope that this would lead to something else. I really don’t want to own a theatre but if I can help this theatre live a little it would be great. As long as I can get the buzz I’m here and I’d like to stay.” Don’t miss out, book now on 01733 822225 or visit www.kenwright.com Read our features, interviews and reviews of the shows on www.espmag.co.uk

FOXES Having already scored a top 10 Billboard hit across the pond with her track Clarity, Foxes is fresh off finishing her first ever UK headline tour and is tipped for the big time. But how did we get here? Foxes – previously Louisa Rose Allen – tried her hand at studying music but dropped out when she realised it wasn’t the studying part that she enjoyed. Now 22, she’s already featured on tracks by Rudimental and Fall Out Boy, and her latest single Youth has tastemakers on both sides of the Atlantic hot under the collar. ESP’s Alex Jones chats to pop’s rising star… Can you tell us about how the past year has been for you? It must’ve been like a whirlwind! “It has, it's been absolutely crazy. It's been like America here, America there, travelling back and forth and yeah, it's been ridiculous. I've definitely had a 'featuring Foxes' year.” Tell me about your latest single Youth… “It was one of the first songs I ever wrote when I had the vision of what I wanted Foxes to sound like.

You studied music in London for a year before dropping out. What about that experience didn’t you enjoy? “It just wasn’t for me. The theory part of the course was overwhelming and at times it felt like I was learning Chinese. So I dropped out and started playing Open Mic nights and started getting myself some real life experiences in the industry instead of learning about them in a textbook.” Artists can spend their whole career trying to crack America and you've done it before releasing your first album!

“I also collaborated with Fall Out Boy for a song on their new album called Just One Yesterday. It's very flattering to be involved with artists like them.”

Did you think about calling back in some favours from the artists you've helped out? “It did cross my mind, at one point I was thinking 'I wonder if I should get Zedd in' but I decided that it could get ridiculous and set a precedent for me having features on my songs for the rest of my life!

You have an album set for release for early 2014, can you give us any hints as to what it sounds like? “Yeah we actually sat down in the studio and listened to it and it really is an array of different sounds!

“I decided the debut album would be a good time to start my own thing aside from the features. Of course I would love to work with them all again in the future and I’m sure we will.”

“When making the album I really wanted to include songs that weren't just straightforward singles you know, I wanted some proper album tracks on there because they're the songs I used to enjoy listening to as a kid. I think those tracks give the album depth.”

Foxes’ latest single Youth is out now and her new single Echo is set for release on November 11 on 7-inch vinyl and digital download. Read the full interview online at www.espmag.co.uk.

“I know and that’s mainly down to the success of Clarity. It's overwhelming to be honest with you, to have so many people out there recognise my voice and a song that I feature on being so successful in the Billboard chart is crazy. When I come back home to the UK it’s nice to be under the radar almost, I can just relax but it is confusing, it's almost like I've done things the wrong way round.” You mentioned your collaboration with Zedd, Clarity, how did that come about? “Well we moved around in similar circles and I knew a lot of people in that scene and one day we skyped and put together a plan. It's funny it wasn't until after we skyped that I actually looked him up on Wikipedia. After that I was like, wow this guy is a big deal.

“It's a very personal song for me, I wrote it when I first moved up to London. At that time it felt like my friends from my home

town thought I was running off to pursue this dream that wasn't a reality and I thought to myself ‘why can't I just do what I love?’ Why is there this pressure to grow up and get a job I hate?’”

Peter Andre kicked off a fabulous weekend of concerts at Peterborough Arena recently and gave a cracking performance for thousands of fans. He was supported by Liberty X, stars of ITV’s The Big Reunion and the audience wasn’t disappointed. The following evening it was 80s time with Billy Ocean supported by Alexander O’Neal and these veteran stars both rocked the venue. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more stars appear at the Arena very soon. CINEMA SHOWCASING NEW TALENT

Showcase Cinemas in Peterborough is now showcasing the latest addition to its new makeover – a brand new lounge bar. The Boongate-based cinema is the first in the chain to incorporate the Showcase Lounge Bar as part of an exciting pilot scheme after a six-week re-fit, that also sees a brand new automated box-office system and carpeting throughout, as the cinema counts down to its Silver Anniversary. It’s the first time the cinema has served alcoholic beverages, with everything from wine and beer (Budweiser and Becks on tap), to bottles of Corona and Kopparberg available – which can also be taken into screens in plastic cups – with leading coffee-brand Costa also on-site serving up cappuccinos, mochas or a simple cup of tea. To top it all off, the Lounge Bar serves up food in a cosmopolitan seating area, with the likes of pizza, burgers, prime rib, chicken wings and paninis on offer – along with a Kid’s Menu. Jonathan Wheeler, General Manager of

28

Showcase Cinemas in Peterborough, has overseen these new developments since being appointed in the position earlier this year. He told me – “We’re proud to be the first cinema to pilot this new scheme and provide the highest spec for the Lounge Bar and automated box-office system.” With nine points of payment – complete with new fully automated tills – it has never been easier to pick up tickets for the latest blockbuster releases. As part of a continuing refurbishment plan – the biggest since it opened in December 1988 – the cinema now has seven of its 13 screens completely redeveloped to include the latest luxury XLR seating, with an overhaul of the final six screens and toilet facilities in the pipeline to complete a modern reboot of the entire building. Jonathan added – “With more than half of our screens now boasting the latest XLR seating, we now have exciting plans going forward to complete this redevelopment as soon as possible. “This will hopefully include the remaining screens and toilets to provide the best possible experience for cinema-goers in Peterborough and the surrounding area.” Gavin Miller

GRAVITY Released: November 8 One of the most highly-anticipated films of the year finally make it to these shores – and is one of those rare films that MUST be seen in 3D if at all possible. After a record-breaking October box-office Stateside – it has already amassed more than $200m – this intense thriller from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaran sees Sandra Bullock’s medical engineer and George Clooney’s veteran astronaut battle for survival in deep space.

NBA 2K14 (360/PS3/PC) Out now With next-gen competition looming in the form of EA’s NBA Live 14 – 2K don’t rest on their laurels as they take it to the hoop and slam dunk it yet again. Improved Pro Stick control and defensive mechanics, the addition of European teams, and a great LeBron James ‘Path to Greatness’ mode, helps 2K14 raise the bar yet again.

#####

FIFA 14 (PS3/360/3DS/PSV) Out now

They duo have to work together after their shuttle is destroyed on a seemingly routine space walk – in this already critically-lauded heart-pounder.

THE BUTLER Released: November 15

Compared to 2K, EA’s boys do seem to have rested on their laurels a tad with their leanest update in years. Fanboys don’t seem to be overly impressed with the new Pure Shot and ball physics system – which takes some getting used to – but this is still undoubtedly THE best pound-for-pound licensed football game on the market.

#####

Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) headlines an all-star cast in one of the sleeper hits of the summer in the States. He stars as a White House butler whose life is chronicled as he serves eight American presidents through famous historical moments – such as the civil rights movement and Vietnam. Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack and Alan Rickman co-star.

With one eye on the next-gen market EA could be forgiven – but this final current-gen effort isn’t a must-buy if you still have FIFA 13. Maybe the Xbox One and PS4 versions will be?

PES 2014 (360/PS3/PC) Out now And that has left the door well and truly open for PES 2014 to make a serious dent in FIFA’s dominance with their best version in many a year. Sadly, without a next-gen version in the pipeline for this year, that impetus may be lost, but for now the franchise is making the right moves – particularly with the creative TrueBall Tech mode.

#####

THE COUNSELLOR

It still needs a lot of work for perfection – and newbies will still loathe licensing-issues – but the battle for gaming football supremacy has never been so tight.

F1 2013 (PS3/360/PC) Out now

Released: November 15

The word that would best describe Codemasters’ latest Formula One outing is ‘incremental’ – but it's still the most exhilarating way to go toeto-toe with Hamilton, Button, Vettel and co.

Director Ridley Scott turns his hand to crime – in this drama from the writer of No Country for Old Men. When a respected lawyer (Michael Fassbender) has a one-time dalliance with drug-trafficking, it turns into a nightmare scenario when he gets in way over his head.

The loss of some legendary licenses take a little of the gloss off, but with Xbox One and PS4 versions excitedly on the horizon this gleefully connects way from downtown – Steph Curry style.

The graphics and racing have been tweaked and the new Classic Mode does at least offer a new reason to purchase this only marginally updated version.

#####

If driving as the legendary Nigel Mansell at Brand’s Hatch (when I saw him win the British Grand Prix in 1986) is enticing – then it’s just about worth it.

NHL 14 (360/PS3) Out now

Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz complete an impressive cast.

Just like with 2K’s aforementioned NBA game, this has been a multi-time winner of sports gaming awards – and it’s not hard to see why.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

This has undoubtedly been one of the most-polished titles out there – excellently improved this year with a cutting-edge physics engine and Live the Life modes – and is simply the best at what it does.

#####

Released: November 21

POKEMON X & Y (3DS) Out now

All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

The massively successful original ignited a box-office stampede – and this sequel starring Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence (best actress for Silver Linings Playbook) could be even bigger. After becoming victors at the Hunger Games, Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) leave their friends and family to embark on a victor’s tour of the districts. But with a rebellion simmering after their success, they become targets of the ruling hierarchy and President Snow (Donald Sutherland) – unhappy at their new iconic status. Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth return – with Oscar-winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman joining the cast.

Throw in an NHL ’94 Anniversary mode (I remember playing it first time round) and you’ve got a slice of Ice Hockey heaven that is puckin’ exceptional.

These are actually two versions of exciting new Pokemon RPG games (I had the ‘Y version’ to review) – boasting great online social features. The 15-year-old series is brought to life on Nintendo’s three-dimensional handheld with colourfully impressive graphics – and a meaty adventure to boot.

#####

There’s only character differences between the two versions – in a quest to become the best Pokemon trainer of all – and the only question is: how many can you catch?

DUCK TALES: REMASTERED & FLASHBACK (360/PS3/PC) Out now For those of you wanting to take a step back in time – these high-def downloadable revamps of these respective much-loved 1989 and 1992 games will do the trick.

### ##

### ##

The platforming simplicity of Duck Tales (also on the WiiU) holds up a little better than the once-lauded shooter Flashback – but both are nicely polished efforts.

POCKET ROCKET PACKS A PUNCH! “Is the sport button on?” asks Sam Barron with a grin stretching across the entire width of his face. “Not yet.” I replied. And with that I lean over from my passenger seat position to engage the sport button on the dashboard. Sam was already having the time of his life driving this lively Abarth 500 but with sport mode on the steering is sharper, the suspension stiffer and the acceleration is more responsive. The look on Sam’s face is all of a sudden transformed to that of a zoo keeper wrestling to tame a wild and out of control lion. The excellent Abarth 500 is indeed a bit of an animal and one of our city’s promising young boxers had met his toughest opponent yet. Sam’s already secured the support of Motorpoint in Fengate as one of his sponsors, as he continues to make his mark in the professional ranks.

Photos: Chris Brudenell

The Eye puncher has strung together impressive performances in the ring and his future certainly looks bright. Motorpoint manager Lee Arnold was quick to spot Sam’s potential and offered support by way of a liveried up Ford Focus to get him to and from his training base at Vic’s Gym in Hampton. Problem is, Sam took a liking to the sprightly Abarth and Lee might be getting a part exchange request soon! I’m not surprised Fiat’s tuned up 500 pushed Sam’s buttons. I’m currently enjoying my second Abarth 500 and I can honestly say, after more than three years of ownership, this little devil of a car still manages to put a smile on my face.

32

www.espmag.co.uk

Italy has always built small cars well. Yes, in the 1970s and 80s most of them turned to rust at the slightest contact with moisture but there’s no denying what memorable driving experiences small Italian cars provide. Every self-confessed petrol head should own an Italian car at some point in their life and they should start with an Abarth 500. This particular example can be had for more than £2k off the conventional forecourt price and £3k less than what it sold for when brand new 12 months ago. With only 8,000 miles on the clock, a recent service and plenty of warranty left on it, this car is excellent value at just £11,495. Throw in the security of buying from Motorpoint and all their after-sales care and you can’t go too wrong in reaching for your wallet. This Abarth is the 135bhp version in factory spec. Abarth offer a whole range of trick bits you can add to the car from side stripes and 17” alloys to an Abarth etched chrome petrol cap and folding rear seats. The list is endless and you’ll feel like a kid in a sweet shop trying to choose what upgrades to spend your massive saving on. So what’s it like to drive? In a word: brilliant. It’s everything you’d expect a pocket rocket to be. One minute you’re cruising along with the window open, addicted to the infectious burble that’s omitted from the twin exhaust pipes. And the next you’re having to keep your wits about you when the 1.4 turbo engine urges you to push it to the limit on a spirited Sunday afternoon B-road drive.

The Abarth 500 is addictive. It’s a proper driver’s car that keeps you involved. You’ll find yourself changing gear more times than an F1 pilot as it begs to be driven with determination and gusto. Twisty roads are to the Abarth what cleavage is to Helen Flanagan. It’s at home in the city but comes alive on country roads. Non-sport mode is a tad limp but it’s by no means a let-down. However, hitting the sports button stirs the very essence of the scorpion that this car’s badge carries and I can’t think of one intelligent reason why you’d ever want to drive with it disengaged. As a bundle of fun these cars are hard to beat. They deliver performance and the 0-62 in 7.9 seconds feels quicker than on paper with it being such a small car (the 160bhp EsseEsse version is a real handful). Looks-wise, the 500 has retained almost every inch of its original voluptuous shape from an era when Italian cars were modelled on the curves of Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida. I’m a big fan of these cars and as if my endorsement isn’t enough, the Abarth 500 has also won the hearts of celebrity owners including Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Chris Evans, Jay Kay and James Martin. If you’ve lost your driving mojo and are looking for a car with soul and character, look no further than this Abarth in the Motorpoint showroom.

BE BRIGHT AND BE SEEN Now the clocks have gone back the Safer Peterborough Partnership is reminding people of the importance of being seen on the roads. HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine

It’s a wonderful way to take your body to another level of deeper cleansing. For some people it takes months of eating in a combined way with a diet high in vegetables, fruits, dealing with strong food addictions such as sugar, refined carbohydrates etc and reducing yeasts/fungi and other infections, inflammations and other obstructions that may be blocking our body’s ability to cleanse itself fully and restore vitality. karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

Want to shape up for the party season fast? ESP’s nutritionist says ‘fasting’ isn’t the easy option... alcohol, preservatives, artificial flavourings etc, and because they’re eating a healthier diet rich in veggies and have increased their general water intake. So let’s look at what juice fasting and cleansing is about and importantly what it isn’t.

A

s it’s coming to that time of year again where we want to whip off a few pounds for party season, one popular method for quick weight loss is juice fasting. This encourages you to consume nothing but juices in place of solid food for a certain number of days, maybe with a soup at the end of the day. Many people do lose water weight and possibly a couple of pounds each day which all sounds fab as it often delivers the quick weight loss results you want.

But this is NOT what fasting and cleansing is really all about, I know far better, safer ways to lose weight and keep it off without taking such measures. There are also many who tout a several day detox programme using their products whilst taking daily shakes, supplements and the like which I wouldn’t recommend. However, some people ‘feel’ better for what they think is a mini detox, but this is mainly due to eating less sugar, gluten, meat, caffeine,

When I talk fasting I am only talking juice fasting with vegetables and in some cases fruit. Water fasting is not a practice that should ever be undertaken. If you’ve lived in this modern world and not up a mountain, sat in a yoga pose, drinking in nothing but pure clean air, water and food without ever having been exposed to a western diet and the foreign chemicals in our environment, (yes that’s you and me both) water fasting would be an incredible burden on the body so never advised. We are considerably more acidic and toxic today than our ancestors. Fasting in an organised way, but only when your body is ready and undertaken after a certain level of deep tissue cleansing, can you reap the enormous benefits physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Cleansing needs to be done in a stage by stage way – not a stuff all you can eat banquet of sugar, caffeine, refined flours, heavy fats, excess proteins and the like for months and then for a few days a year enter a juice fast. In fact it does your body more harm than good. Toxicity and acidity in the cells and tissues will be stimulated when we take these alkaline juices, this electromagnetic attraction from these juices to the acidic waste will pull this out of the tissues. Sounds great but if you’re not then removing them effectively it’ll do more harm than good and you won’t feel great. Many people can’t deal with the symptoms of doing all this too fast and suffer headaches, bloating, spots, insomnia and the like. This isn’t good for the body and so when you get told this is just the effect of your detox, it isn’t – this is waste not being removed and will only go back in. Therefore juice fasting takes on a whole new meaning and it needs a level of understanding to be fully respected. However, the above said, having a healthy vegetable juice during your day or week inbetween some other healthy solid foods will bring huge benefits as juices are absorbed quickly and nutrients are taken up by the body without any effort on your digestion. Taking a healthy veggie juice is a beneficial addition to a healthy diet and can be a great way to get a glow going for the party season. Or it can be a great way to have a digestive rest whilst delivering a boost of nutrients and energy to the cells. Juice fasting is an amazing tool when used correctly, but as always, take advice before going out there buying a book and getting stuck in, or spending a hefty sum on supplements (many are acid forming and not absorbed well anyway). If you have a medical condition or are taking medication then please speak to your GP before doing such things. Karen For more information go to www.karendevine.co.uk

For the past few years my other half, amongst many other local men, has been partaking in this gentlemanly campaign and he’s already preparing himself for another very itchy November. If you’re still not sure whether to take part in this great cause this year just think what a small ask it is to grow a moustache for a month when compared with what thousands of others affected by male cancers or mental health problems have to deal with. Fat Jack’s mint moustache wax, £3.99 – made in Berkshire this medium hold wax is awesome value for money and best suited for a short to medium mo making it ideal for those of you out there that are more follicly challenged. So do your bit this Movember and become a walking talking billboard for 30 days and help raise public awareness and funds for research into the often ignored issues of men’s health. Good luck to the guys at Peterborough Rugby Union Football Club who’ve already told me they’ll be taking part, but I’d love to hear from all you Mo Bros out there so please send me your before and after photos to charlotte.jolly@espmag.co.uk and my top three will be posted in next month’s issue. Ready… Steady… Grow!

SERENITy LOvES HAS THE X FACTOR X Factor’s Lydia Lucy chose Peterborough’s very own Serenity Loves salon to have some much deserved pampering. After following the salon on Twitter and seeing the great photos and interaction Serenity Loves has with their clients and fans, the X Factor star drove all the way from Romford, Essex with her parents to get her hair extensions done. Whilst at the salon, Lydia also decided to get her nails done in between signing autographs and having her photo taken with other clients. She was over the moon with both her treatments as well as being more than happy to mingle and chat with salon guests and is hoping to return soon for more treatments. Lydia certainly thinks that Serenity Loves was well worth the 75 minutes drive from her home and we should feel lucky to have such an amazing salon on our doorsteps on Oundle Road. It’s got my vote!

WANT TO LOOK TEN YEARS YOUNGER? If you’ve seen the TV show and wish you could do the same, Martin and Mary at My Body Essentials have just about everything you need to help you turn back the clock without the need for the knife! “As I got better I took the ‘I’m alive, I will enjoy all that life has to offer’ option,” said Polly. “Of course, I piled on the weight along with everything else that goes with an extremely poor diet and lifestyle including poor skin, especially my face. It was dull and grey with a combination of dry, itchy, scaly patches and oily areas that kept getting clogged.”

Radio Frequency session helped tighten the skin that was now starting to droop.

“... it has made such a difference to how my clothes fit and to my confidence too.”

Fortunately for Polly her sister Mary owns MBE and soon booked her in for a session of Radio Frequency skin treatments and specialist Image Skincare products. The Radio Frequency, a heat based treatment triggers renewal of the collagen and elastin deep in the layers of skin so it tightens and shrinks the skin and any open pores. It also gets the lymphatic system working properly so all the toxins that have built up drain away more quickly leaving skin looking and feeling fresher. Just look at Polly, one satisfied customer who’s definitely looking good with their help. After falling ill with meningitis, Polly then celebrated her recovery by taking it easy, treating herself to snacks and junk food but then paid the price.

“Being overweight and eating such a poor diet left me feeling lethargic and tired,” added Polly, “so Martin suggested the ‘five a day +’ supplement that helps boost energy.” In February Polly decided to tackle her weight gain. Her new healthier lifestyle was melting the fat nicely and another

“As I lost weight I continued with a course of four more sessions. I was almost down to my target weight but was having trouble shifting a couple of areas of fat around my midriff and hips. Once again they came to my rescue with their Lipo Belt Body Sculpting fat reduction treatments. At the first session I lost 4cm and overall a total of 9cm came off just where I needed it to. I had six sessions altogether but it has made such a difference to how my clothes fit and to my confidence too!” The good news is that if you’d also like to look ten years younger, MBE on Shrewsbury Avenue have an amazing offer where you can enjoy £600 worth of treatments for just £475 taken over six months.

Last month the baking enthusiasts recruited their newest member, Deborah Manger, recent star of BBC's The Great British Bake Off, who settled down to eat a slice or two while chatting to other bakers! Deborah, who fell victim to a shock double elimination in this year’s competition told ESP – "It was great to meet the many bakers at Cake Club and I'm already planning my cake for the next meeting!" Next month, the theme is 'It's a cake, but not as we know it...' – think lemon meringue, sticky toffee, and apple crumble for inspiration. The meet is at 7.30pm on November 11. There are no membership fees, and all are welcome.

“We’d like to thank the residents of Stamford for their support on all three days and the visitors who made the effort to attend.” Alex Jones

NEW TUNE FROM ADRIAN DUFFY & THE MAYO BROTHERS

Photo: Emma Bothamley

Adrian Duffy & the Mayo Brothers have released a new single called Someone Like You and they have a video out to promote the single, filmed at Nene Valley Railway, which we’ve featured on our website www.espmag.co.uk

I’m looking forward to November 3, because that’s the first day of the month-long local radio broadcasts on Radio Peterborough 106.2fm. I’ll be on the lunchtime show between 10am and 1pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The band actually consist of the three Duffy Brothers Adrian (acoustic guitar, vocals, bass & mandolin), Chris (drums & percussion) and Melvin (pedal steel, slide & electric guitars, bass & vocals), who grew up around much of East Anglia. They went to school in Spalding for 5 years, and still have a lot of family and friends in Peterborough, Stamford and Oundle (where their cousins Fenech-Soler are from).

However, I’m also on air Saturday AND Sunday between 10am and 1pm with Claire Tod in a double weekend Keith and Claire. This extended Keith and Claire is by popular demand (of her husband as it keeps her out of the house for longer!). We’re hoping to feature live local bands on Saturdays with some other live entertainment on Sundays. Make sure you tune into Radio Peterborough 106.2fm to find out who’s featured. It’s on air from Sunday November 3, and one thing is certain. It will be LIVE and it will be LOCAL for YOU!

The video was filmed on location at Nene Valley Railway where some great dramas/films have been shot over the years, including Silent Witness, Band Of Brothers, Golden Eye, Octopussy as well as music videos for Queen, The Levellers and now The Mayo Brothers.

JOIN THE JAZZ JAM

EAST MEETS WEST WITH PENNYLESS AND MUHA

“The whole team at Nene Valley Railway were wonderful,” Adrian told ESP, “as were the many good friends and family who pulled out all the stops to make this happen for us… we owe you all big-time!!” Melvin is one of the world’s foremost slide and pedal steel guitarists, and has toured for three years with Robbie Williams (did the business on ‘Eternity’) and amongst the many great gigs worldwide, got to perform at Knebworth. 2013 for the band, has seen sessions and tours for Mike Scott & The Waterboys and performances with First Aid Kit on this year’s Glastonbury Pyramid Stage, and Someone Like You is the third EP taken from the current run of songs and comes in anticipation of a new album and UK & Ireland tour in 2014. Through their uncles The Duffy Brothers, the lads spent a lot of their childhood backstage with the likes of Tammy Wynette, Charlie Pride, Emmylou Harris, watching and learning from the good and the great, and you can see those influences if you take a look at the impressive new video. Also see how many local locations you can spot.

A fantastic night of live music is in store for folk lovers at Kings Cliffe Village Hall on Saturday November 9. The performances come from two bands working at either end of the folk spectrum. Popular local folk trio Pennyless perform a varied mix of traditional and original songs, and they’re joined on the night by MuHa who are based in Nottingham. MuHa combine the melodic beauty of Eastern European folklore, North Indian Kathak rhythms, Cuban beats, Western European influence and original lyrics from Hindi to old Russian.

They’re hotly tipped by Radio 2 and have been getting great reviews – you can catch them in action locally at Charters on Sunday November 3 at 3pm.

Both bands appeared recently at Peterborough Folk Rootz Festival at Charters and perform nationally, and they share the bill once again at this gig on November 9 at Kings Cliffe Village Hall.

EDWIN STARR BAND THE TEAM

Here is a tip off for soul fans. Stamford Corn Exchange plays host to The Edwin Starr Band aka The Team on Saturday November 23. It’ll be a great night featuring a lot of Northern Soul. I can recommend it to you because a few years ago I had the pleasure of working with the band at Peterborough Festival in Cathedral Square and they produced a pulsating show.

Following the success of its first Jazz Jam Night back in September, The Brewery Tap is to host this new regular event which judging by the initial reaction is set to take Peterborough by storm. The event is to be held on the third Sunday of every month. The evening is hosted by a ‘house’ jazz band formed of like-minded local musicians who are passionate about jazz and blues and want to revive a music scene that’s seen a decline in presence in the city over the last couple of decades. At last a professional ‘jam night’ run by musicians, for musicians. So if you’re a jazz musician or just a lover of jazz, blues and funk it’s certainly worth supporting the initiative. Since his untimely death in 2003, this original eight piece band The Team, keep the legend that was Edwin Starr and his music alive and in recent years they’ve been fronted by Edwin’s younger brother, Angelo, who is a real showman. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Edwin’s death. The one-off show will re-live Edwin’s hits, with soul and Motown classics as well as material from The Team’s new album, Keeping The Faith. Special guest for the evening is Lorraine Silver, a legend on the Northern Soul circuit and famed for the hit Lost Summer Love. It’s worth checking out both The Team and Lorraine on Google and as the mantra of the band is ‘we came here to party for whoever, whenever, wherever!’ it’s definitely worth going along to see the show in Stamford on Saturday November 23. Tickets are available on 01780 766455.

FENECH–SOLER EXPLAIN THEIR RITUALS

EDDI READER’S STAMFORD ATTRACTION The legendary Eddi Reader visits Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday November 16, as part of a national tour celebrating the release of a long awaited new single, Baby’s Boat taken from her forthcoming album Vagabond. Ahead of the tour, I spoke with Eddi, whose captivating voice has entertained thousands both on record and live throughout a successful career with Fairground Attraction, the Waterboys and her solo work. I began by asking her why we’ve had to wait so long for new recordings.

Championed by Radio 1, cracking the Top 40, extensive touring and a cancer scare. One might think after a debut campaign as hectic and at times terrifying as theirs that Fenech-Soler have earned a little time to themselves. To the band however this couldn't have been further from their minds.

“Family life took over and I put my career on hold for the last 5 years, but eventually you get fed up with Judge Judy on TV, and I started writing, gradually turned the basement into a studio, installed a mixing desk in the kitchen and combined the editing with family life. “ I assembled some really good musicians from the Glasgow area and we had two mammoth live recording sessions which produced 27 pieces. Then we whittled those down to produce the required number of tracks for the new album Vagabond which is released in February. It doesn’t mean that the others are forgotten though. I hope some of them will form the basis for another album in the future.” With Fairground Attraction you achieved a number one with Perfect and I think it’s such a pure sound. Did you see its potential when you first heard it? “Yes straightaway. Mark Nevin wrote it and it is a brilliant song. I’m not a great songwriter, but I feel I’m a better interpreter of music, and I could see clearly that with such a great bass and drum rhythm, then the song had great potential. The very first time that Mark played it to me, I knew it was right on the money.” What about your solo hit, Patience of Angels? “Well although it was successful, and I’m very proud of it as a song, I was never entirely happy with the actual recording particularly at the end. My record label at the time, Warner Brothers, insisted that we spend a lot of money on a producer.

The year is 2006 and four guys from Kings Cliffe are sat in a front room plotting their master-plan. Their goal? Simple, to conquer the world with Indie Electronica. Fast forward seven years and fresh off a tour supporting American fashion punks Paramore, Fenech-Soler are ready to execute phase two of their master-plan entitled Rituals. ESP’s Alex Jones caught up with Ross and Dan from the band to talk about their journey so far, the new album and setting their sights for Europe.

Ross – “We didn't really have a break we finished touring around Christmas and went straight into the studio January.” In 2011 lead singer Ben Duffy was diagnosed with testicular cancer forcing the band to cancel a number of appearances and put their touring ambitions on hold. Naturally this was a hard time for the band. They called the shots and so hired a professional producer, rather than a musician and to me the recording reflected that lack of feel in the final. I decided from then, that I wouldn’t work with people who aren’t from a musical background, when I’m producing music. After all, you wouldn’t allow someone who hasn’t studied medicine to operate on you.” It sounds like you enjoy, but at the same time are very serious about your music. Will that be reflected in Stamford? “Very much so. I do enjoy recording because that song is a permanent memory of your work, but the raw excitement of a live performance is something that I’ve missed and I’m really looking forward to this tour. I hear Stamford Corn Exchange is an exciting venue for live music, and so I hope the evening will be a success.” I know a lot of people have waited for Eddi’s reappearance, I’m sure her wish will come true. The night features special guest Kieran Goss and tickets are £20 on 01780 766455.

Two years on and Ben's fighting fit, how was it to be in the band during such a turbulent time? Dan – “It was obviously a massive shock initially and we just wanted to make sure that Ben was going to be OK. We just tried to carry on as normal and looked ahead to the summer. Our first gig back was scheduled to be Glastonbury so we marked that as a time when we hoped Ben would be fit again.” The new album Rituals is a cavalcade of synthesizers and pop hooks, how many hours did the band sit in front of a keyboard making it? Dan – “I think we spent the best part of a year! After the ups and downs of the first album we just wanted to spend some time doing what we wanted and to make sure that the record was bigger and better than the last.” Ross – “We feel it sounds better as an album and when you listen to it you can tell that it was made over a certain period of time.”

Now you can focus on the live side of things, you've just finished supporting Paramore for a section of their arena tour, how was that? Dan – “Fantastic, it was one of those things that we got invited on and we weren't sure if the musical mix would gel but it worked well and for me it was one of the most fun tours I've been on. “It was also nice to get out and play some big crowds in Europe because most of the shows we've been doing have been predominantly UK based.” We noticed there wasn't a Peterborough date on your upcoming UK tour, are there any plans for a homecoming show? Dan – “Yeah in our November tour I think the closest show is at Nottingham but we've got a tour which has been pencilled in for the new year so hopefully we can get a Peterborough date in on that!” At the moment the Peterborough music scene is under the spotlight, obviously yourselves coming from Kings Cliffe and We Are Fiction being championed by BBC Introducing, have you got any advice you'd like to give to local bands about how to progress in the industry? Ross – “Play a lot of shows and get out there, recording as much as possible, you can do so much at your own house now and that’s what we used to do because studios can be so expensive for bands starting up. “Get out to other areas, we always tried to get down to London as much as possible because things move quickly down there but also build up a local fan base. That's the way to do it.' Fenech-Soler's new album Rituals is out now and is available from iTunes. For tour dates visit www.fenechsoler.co.uk.
