PETERBOROUGH ARTS CINEMA There’s a great line-up of films at the John Clare Theatre this month – kicking off with Once Upon A Time In Anatolia on Thursday October 4. This film centres around main character Kenan, a murder suspect who’s very important to the police as he and another prisoner promise to lead officers to a body. Next to hit the screen is The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists on Thursday October 11. It’s based on the first series of children’s books by Gideon Defoe, and Hugh Grant is the voice of the hero British buccaneer in the mid 19th century Caribbean. Follow the story as he urges his incompetent crew to support his bid to become Pirate of the Year. On Thursday October 18 The Kid With A Bike will be showing. The Dardenne brothers revive the memory of De Sica’s 1948 classic Bicycle Thieves with their latest work. This chaotic story sees De Sica’s father and son wander all over town with their bicycle which gets stolen, and the Dardennes’ son also wanders around looking for his dad and for his bicycle which gets stolen! Finally, on Thursday October 25 Delicacy will be on the screen. Follow Tautou – a perky creative management type whose idyllic life crumbles after her hunky husband is hit by a car while out jogging. You can find out more about the latest films at the John Clare Theatre on www.peterboroughartscinema.co.uk.

SHERLOCK HOLMES:

A STUDY IN FEAR!

The world’s most successful detective takes on the world’s most notorious villain in this gripping play by John Goodrum. Follow Sherlock Holmes – brilliant, flawed and inclined to justice – as he finally confronts Professor James Moriarty. The show stars Ian Sharrock – known for playing the part of Jackie Merrick in Emmerdale for ten years and Nicholas Briggs – the voice of the Daleks and the Cybermen in BBC’s Doctor Who and actor in Torchwood. Sherlock Holmes – A Study In Fear comes to Peterborough as part of a national tour from the Rumpus Theatre Company. It’s on at the Key Theatre from October 18 – 20, nightly at 7.30pm and Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets £16. Box office: 01733 207239.

THE LAST OF THE HAUSSMANS: NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE The best of British theatre is being broadcast live to cinemas worldwide and on Thursday October 11 you can catch The Last Of The Haussmans starring Julie Walters at the South Holland Centre. This new play is said to be funny and touching, as Julie Walters plays character Judy Haussman – a mum to two children who’s family life is clearly losing its grip. Judy is a feisty character who’s growing old, but remains in spirit as she holds things together in her dated Art Deco house on the Devon coast. The cast includes big names such as Rory Kinnear who recently won the Evening Standard Award for Best Actor in Hamlet at the National Theatre, and Helen McCrory who’s starred in films such as The Queen and Hugo. It’s on at 7pm, tickets are £12.50. Box office: 01775 764777.

SHOW OF HANDS Triple BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winners singer songwriter Steve Knightley, multi instrumentalist Phil Beer and double bassist vocalist Miranda Sykes are performing at Stamford Corn Exchange this month. Their music’s been described as captivating as they play a mixture of rock, blues country and traditional folk music played out on instruments such as a slide guitar to a mandocello, fiddle to a South American cuatro. Catch them on Wednesday October 17 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £18.00, box office: 01780 766455.

Christmas is coming... oh yes it is! ne good thing amid all the hustle and bustle of the festive season is most definitely the panto and over at the Cresset they’re continuing this summer’s London theme with the famous tale of Dick Whittington, and with a few famous faces.

Photos: Chris Brudenell

O

Boy band 3SL and Pop Idol heart-throb Andy Scott-Lee takes on the role of Dick, while popular Eastenders actor Ricky Groves plays Idle Jack. They’ll be joined by Zach Vanderfelt as Sarah the Cook, who proved popular with Cresset audiences last year as one of the ugly sisters in Cinderella. The line up will be completed with a full supporting cast and local dancers to help Jack find his way to London where the streets are paved with gold! Ricky, best known as Garry Hobbs in Eastenders, lives near St. Neots and told ESP he’s really looking forward to working in the city – “The beauty of this one is I’m able to commute to it and it’s a shorter run – although I think I’ll regret that it’s a short run as I think I’ll really miss it!

“I’ve done the baddie so I thought I’d have a go at the fun guy who’s going to get involved in a bit of the slapstick.” Ricky knows that after nine years in a top TV soap he’ll always be ‘the guy from Eastenders’ – “It’s difficult to get away from the character of Garry because in some ways he was a loveable fop really. When I first started on Eastenders I realised there were too many heart-throbs and too many gangsters, so I figured the secret to longevity was to make him a bit more vulnerable and more or less happy go lucky, and I suppose Idle Jack’s a bit like that really. I think he’s a nice guy and he gets himself in trouble a bit too often. You’d send him on an errand and he’d come back with the wrong thing every time!” The hero is none other than singer Andy Scott-Lee who told ESP he loves panto – “As a kid it was tradition every year to go and see the panto – so for me it’s like a really big thing. It’s different now because it’s my family coming to watch me so it’s quite nerve wracking. It’s just a magical time of year, it’s Christmas and everyone’s in good spirits and they want to be entertained and hopefully that’s what we do!

“I think it’s going to be more intimate this year though so it’s going to be really good. It’s going to have a fantastic buzz – I can’t wait.” Andy says you might just catch him out an about in the city in the coming weeks so keep your eyes peeled – “Peterborough’s a great place, I’ve been here several times so I’m looking forward to it. It’s quite full on with panto but wherever I am I like to go round the town and get a feel for the place.” Dick Whittington runs from December 15–30 at the Cresset in Bretton. Box office: 01733 265705.

As well as the fabulous parade there’ll be plenty of fun and entertainment including fairground attractions, food, live music, competitions, street entertainers, fireworks and fancy dress in an event for all the family. The action centres on Sheep Market, Hall Place and the Market Place with the humble pumpkin the theme running through the host of stalls selling soups, cakes, cookies and pies.

GET SET FOR THE GREAT EASTERN RUN It’s hard to believe it’s that time again and thousands of runners will be taking to the streets of Peterborough in the best Perkins Great Eastern Run ever on Sunday October 14! There’s been a huge rise in the number of entries this year and the race was rated as one of the top ten half marathons in the UK last year and has been awarded runbritain Grand Prix status. This year sees a change to the course with entrants starting and finishing on the city’s Embankment. Organisers hope it will create more excitement for those watching the race on Cathedral Square and along Bridge Street and Long Causeway so make sure you get down there to savour the atmosphere and cheer on the runners! It won’t be just top athletes pounding Peterborough’s streets, the event includes a 4km fun run and the half marathon also attracts thousands of non-competitive runners. For more info and details of road closures, visit www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk or call 01733 207207.

and more. Sadly Peterborough gets written off too often as a New Town – which it really isn’t.”

alling all thrill seekers… have you ever taken part in a Peterborough Ghost Walk? No? Well, I highly recommend you do so. After participating in this popular event myself, I can promise you’ll never look at our city in the same way again. I had a preview tour of what to expect this Halloween with the wonderfully spooky Brian Jones.

C

Photos: Emma Bothamley

This year’s Halloween Ghost Walks take place from Friday October 26 – Wednesday October 31 (excluding Saturday 27), at 7.30pm and 8pm. Entry for adults is £5, and it’s £3 for concessions.

12

I also spoke to Stuart Orme, the Interpretation Manager for Vivacity Heritage who also carries out Ghost Walks, to find out why they’re so popular. Stuart explained – “We are an incredibly historic city, with stories going back over the last 3,500 years

www.espmag.co.uk

To give you an idea of what to expect on the walk, Stuart was kind enough to give away one of his many spooky stories. “I’ll tell you the one about the Cathedral. Above each arch are four slit windows. One of the windows above the left-hand arch is, so legend has it, haunted by the ghost of one of the men who built this magnificent church. “The story has it that the man in question had worked on the church all his life, from childhood when he’d been apprenticed to be a stonemason. One night he was working late by the light of a candle, perched high up on wooden scaffolding inside the building. Eventually, in the early hours of the morning, he finally tired and so packed up his tools to go home. As he turned to leave his candle blew out. Unable to locate his flint and steel to relight his candle, he tried to navigate his way in the dark, only to lose his footing and plunge from the scaffolding to his death.

“Witnesses claim that a candle has been seen glowing in one of these upper windows late at night by those passing through the precincts, even though there should be no-one, let alone a burning candle inside. Legend has it that this is the light of the ghostly stonemason, the candle that cost him his life, whilst the spirit of the stonemason himself is said to come back to the inside of the window, still chipping away at the window frame he never got to finish.” The walk starts at the museum, which is also meant to be haunted. Stuart confirmed – “We’re thought to have at least eight ghosts in the building, the most famous of which is that of a First World War Australian soldier, Thomas Hunter. “I’ve seen one of the ghosts in the museum – that of a hooded figure, perhaps a monk – in the cellar underneath the building. “Probably the scariest thing was about six years ago when I was alone in the building one night when there were three loud bangs on the other side of a gallery door from where I was sitting, like someone was hammering on them with a fist. I went and checked and found nobody there.” Stuart’s even written a book titled Haunted Peterborough, which is the first time a detailed set of ghost stories from the Peterborough area has been put in print. It gives an entertaining and rather different view of the city’s history.

So, make sure you check out the Ghost Walks for some chills this Halloween or throughout the year. The team do an incredible job at painting a picture as they tell their stories. You will walk away a little spooked, but that’s part of the fun! Places are limited, so to avoid disappointment book your tickets today! Call 01733 864663 or email museum@vivacitypeterborough.com. There’s plenty more happening this Halloween too, just see our events guide or check out www.vivacity-peterborough.com for further details.

DECEMBER OPENING

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

FOR ATTICA VIP NIGHTCLUB

Packing

Those of you who remember the Attic back in the 1990s will be pleased to know the venue is making a return to the city’s night scene. But what’s important to note is that ‘Attica VIP Nightclub’ will be on another scale to the Attic – in fact the difference between what was and what is soon to be is the difference between night and day. The only thing this eagerly awaited nightspot has in common with the old venue is its location on Broadway. Put simply, Attica will be like nothing we’ve ever seen in Peterborough. This chic and classy venue will be something for all of us to be proud of and we can all enjoy it if we respect its core values. The clue to what Attica represents lies in its title – VIP. You’ll feel like a very special person inside this club and you’ll want to make a proper effort to look special every time you visit. No more venturing outside the city for a stylish and sophisticated club, as we’ll finally have one on our doorstep. Owners of Attica have put some serious investment and research into this project. People of Peterborough wanted somewhere to go where they were made to feel special and that’s what they’ll have.

BMW SCOOT IS A HOOT! Imagine buying a Fiat 500 that drives like a Ferrari in disguise. This is what it feels like riding BMW’s first bona fide scooter. I own a scooter and a motorbike. My riding style has to adapt to both machines and this means dressing, riding and behaving in one way on the Vespa and in a different style on the bike. But riding BMW’s C 600 Sport throws all that methodology up in the air because this scooter is essentially a motorbike without gears. Unlike most conventional scooters it’s well equipped too, and with 60bhp on tap and 58 miles per gallon on offer from a 650cc engine, riding this scoot is definitely a hoot let me tell you! It’s as wolf in sheep’s clothing and it’s well worth a test ride whether you’re a scooterist, biker or a ‘mocker’ (half Mod, half Rocker) like me. Give Balderston a call on 01733 565470 and check out the Sport and GT models on www.balderston.net and read more in the wheels section on www.espmag.co.uk

Attica will be the talk of the town for lots of reasons but the headline conversations will all be about the visitor experience. Artist impressions of the grand entrance; the Dom Perignon champagne-sponsored booths and the transparent DJ consul confirm we’re in for a treat.

SIMONA AND SWEATY PEP

Booth and private function bookings have already been taken for Christmas and New Year celebrations so get in quick if you want to secure a night.

Well done to our newly crowned Face of ESP Simona Bajorinaite from Stilton whose first challenge minutes after winning the coveted title was not to squirm as my sweat-infested face and moist top lip planted a congratulatory smacker on her cheek.

Attica are looking for top bar staff and marketing personnel. This is a chance to be part of one of the classiest venues outside of London.

Gross I know but a reminder that it’s not all glam being Face of ESP – the role has statutory responsibilities! You can get to know our winner by reading my interview in next month’s issue.

Watch this space as I countdown to opening night...

OFFICIALCLUBNIGHTS CELEBRATES FIRST BIRTHDAY! It's hard to believe it’s been nearly a year since the first OfficialClubNights event launched in Peterborough. The monthly events have featured Kiss FM DJs, glamorous female DJs, dancers, entertainers a TV crew and photographers and they’ve partnered up with the likes of Nandos and Pkai hair. Now on Friday October 5, Edwards is being transformed into a full on birthday party with hit London DJ and Producer David Cherish. Featuring ice fountain sparklers, a gigantic birthday cake, hundreds of branded cupcakes and of course the infamous supersize LED glowsticks. There’s also a £1.50 premium drink selection all night long and VIP guests receive special gift bags!

Packing for holiday. I hate it. I’d rather sit in a bath of Marmite. Packing means: one pair of pants, stupid straw hat, girly wet wipes, Imodium, spilled sun cream, creases, muffin top shorts, random pubic hairs, smelly foreign bank notes, trunks that don’t fit, plug-in don’t work mosquito killers, proper bog roll and smuggling Cadbury’s Dairy Milk for Italian relatives.

PLEASE PAP ME I must have seen our excellent street photographer Chris Porsz (who incidentally has a new book out – see Gossip) at least six times in the last four weeks but has he photographed me?

No, well at least I don’t think he has. Hopefully one day I’ll make it into his brilliant collection of photos taken in our city over the last few decades. I love this guy’s work www.chrisporsz.com It’s simple yet so charming. Chris is a city legend. That should be enough (genuine) praise to get papped!

Fantastico D’Acampo Claustrophobia isn’t something I ordinarily suffer from, thankfully. However, on leaving the Peterborough Italian Festival after my interview with the delizioso Gino D’Acampo, this is exactly what I was feeling, in a slightly good way – if that’s even at all possible?!

Susan, Gino and new Face of ESP Simona

“In the jungle, you name it, I ate it! The experience was amazing. Before I went there I thought ‘this is all going to be fake, they’re going to feed us, we’re going to be nice and comfortable’ – no they weren’t, it was awful! I had to eat some pretty bad stuff. It was all part of the experience but it ruined my pallet for a couple of weeks. “My favourite dish in the whole world is pasta – which was hard to come by – everything to do with pasta I love it!” But Mr D’Acampo, you don’t look like you eat lots of pasta…? “I do, but I exercise. The secret is not to eat too much – often and little.”

undreds from the Peterborough community and beyond (Italian and non-Italian alike) descended on the city centre to not only enjoy this fabulous festival – but to catch a rare glimpse of, secure an autograph from and (if you were lucky) grab a kiss with the hunky Italian chef and TV personality Gino D’Acampo.

H

I waited in anticipation at Barista café for my audience with said Gino, as the excitement among the crowds had somehow transferred to butterflies in my tummy. I didn’t have to wait too long, as Gino made his way over to have a chat with me… after finishing drying his shirt off from the beer that had been spilled on him as he pushed through the eager mob. They wanted flesh! Dry shirt in position, Gino commented on the amazing atmosphere– “It’s crazy I tell you, crazy! There are loads of people but it’s good. It’s great to see such a great Italian community, which if I can help, it’s a pleasure. Thank God I don’t suffer from claustrophobia (my sentiments exactly!) or otherwise it would be a very difficult job to do.” So how did Gino turn into the TV personality, chef and heart-throb that he is today?

“Cooking from fresh is the best thing ever. People should relax, pour themselves a nice glass of wine and buy the right ingredients when they’re in season as they’re cheaper and much better for you. Approach the kitchen in a different way, don’t stress. Get in the kitchen and enjoy. Even if you make a mistake first or twice, third time I guarantee you it’s going to be OK. ” “I moved to London about 18 years ago – it was a great move and one of the best things I ever did. London is a land of opportunity, which I’m living proof of. “My first TV appearance came about when I was working as a development chef in a restaurant at an Italian food distribution company in London. A producer called Michael O’Connor came around and he saw me cooking away during his meeting and said – ‘I want you. Why don’t you come and do the show with me?’ – and it went from there.” All who know and love Gino, know his natural flair and charisma were made for TV – so was he sure he didn’t move to London to embark upon a television career like the thousands before him? “I never wanted to be on television. I wanted to own a couple of restaurants, nice and quiet, good food and make a living like that and then God blessed me with the television and it was good.”

Photos: Chris Brudenell

16

Perhaps that’s where I’m going wrong. And what would his advice be to people who don’t have a Gino in their kitchen to rustle up amazing culinary delights?

Crowned ‘King of the Jungle’ in the 2010 series of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, I wondered if he’d drawn any inspiration from the bush tucker trials for new ingredients perhaps (blurgh!).

www.espmag.co.uk

What’s next, another book launch, or TV show, or…? “Holiday. I have a holiday booked in at Christmas in Mexico because I worked all summer on the lunchtime TV show so I just need to get a little break.” On my struggle back through the crowd, I spoke to the lovely Mrs Campanella who’d just got 10 signed pictures and a kiss from the man himself! “I love Gino of course, I’m Italian!” she enthused. “I love his food and sense of humour – beautiful! It was very exciting meeting him for the first time. He’s a lovely kind man.” Well, he’d definitely gone down famously – I reckon he would’ve been kept busy until at least midnight! As all his cook books had sold out, it was only fitting to get his exclusive ‘Posh’ menu that he created for Peterborough people, signed for my mum! Organised by the Italian Community Association and Peterborough City Council this was the first time the festival had been held over two days and it’s great to hear they’re already planning a bigger event for next year. Perhaps Gino could visit both days next time! Susan Saunders

Louis Smith has shown us some tricky moves on the pommel horse during the Olympics but now he’s set to show us some fancy footwork on the dancefloor.

resh from his medal success in London he’s now going for the glitterball in Strictly Come Dancing and his mum Elaine is over the moon!

Photo: Emma Bothamley

F Louis’ mum Elaine

Anyone who knows the 23 year-old gymnast will be aware of his great affection for his nan – he’s even had a message for her added to his famous tattoo on his back – and as it was her favourite programme it’s easy to see why this was the obvious TV choice. “She was a really big part of his life,” says mum Elaine Petch, “and my aunty loves the show too.” When it was announced he was part of this year’s line-up along with fellow Olympian Victoria Pendleton Louis said – “It’s a very prestigious show, it’s definitely one of the best shows on TV at the moment, and I think it’s an honour as well as being great fun to be part of the show. Coming off the back of the Olympics and having been on such a high, I think this is one of the only shows that can match that in terms of the adrenalin buzz and being part of something special.” Here at ESP we’re all big fans of Strictly and having a local hero to cheer for will make this series extra special, so we can’t wait for it all to kick off on BBC One on Friday October 5.

Photos: BBC/Ray Burmiston

What with the nail biting gymnastics events in the Olympics you’d think Louis would give himself – and us – a break from the tension but he’s leapt straight back in and will be stretching our nerves to the limits once again. So it’s adidas sports tops in the laundry bin and instead it’s tight shirts and sequins! So how will he cope with the glitz of Strictly?

18

www.espmag.co.uk

“I think they’ll dress him in what suits him,” says Elaine. “When I saw him on the red carpet in a dickie bow – I mean he always wears a dickie bow! As soon as I looked at him I thought that’s the sort of thing he’d like. I don’t know about the sequins but he’ll put it on and enjoy it all.” Elaine told us she actually watched the prerecorded launch show with Louis and his brother Leon. Louis admitted he was nervous before being teamed with Argentine Tango queen Flavia Cacae, but is he likely to be sassy in the Salsa or hot to trot in the Foxtrot? “I think he likes an upbeat tune more than the ballroom type of thing,” says Elaine,“but it’s all new to him. He’s never waltzed before. I think he’ll enjoy it all but will like the uptempo ones more.” After spending most of his life so far in the gym his mum admits Louis was ready to try something new and although he’s likely to be a little shy at first, he’s always up for a new challenge. So as the training kicks in ready for Louis to take his first latin-heeled footsteps on the dance floor, Elaine says he’s already settling in – “The people on there he said are so lovely. I did meet one of the producers and he was so lovely, really friendly. I know Louis will get on with all of them. He’s quite an easy person to get on with anyway – he’s full of beans! “Everyone I’ve spoken to has said they’re so looking forward to seeing him. Everyone’s so excited!” And so are we! Bring it on Mr. Smith, let’s see you throw some ballroom shapes, grab a ten from Len and leave Craig looking for his long lost book of compliments! We’ll be following Louis’ progress each week so keep up to date by keeping an eye on www.espmag.co.uk – like us on facebook and follow us on twitter and you’ll be first to see the news.

SUPER MATT SETS IO R R O F S T H IG S IS H eterborian Paralympian, Matt Skelhon aka 'the sharp shooter from Stilton' is setting his sights on Rio in four years time after returning from London 2012 with a silver and bronze medal.

P

After winning gold at Beijiing in 2008, Matt bagged himself a silver and bronze amidst enthusiastic scenes at the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich. Speaking to ESP on his return home he told us he would be going back to Rio to compete for the GB shooting team. "To have been part of the biggest and most successful shooting team Great Britain has ever had is a great feeling. There are 25 in the GB squad, and 12 were at the Games so for me to come away with two medals is incredible. The atmosphere was like nothing I've ever experienced, people screaming your name and kids wanting your autograph made me feel like I was living the life of someone else!" During the Games, Matt found himself as one of the faces of the Paralympics with a memorable picture of him on the front cover of Day 2 of the official Paralympic programme with a striking spiky blue mohican haircut. "The picture was done earlier in the year, they sent a stylist around to Don’t worry Matt it’s definitely real! do it as in Beijing I had a red mohican, but this time it looks like I've got a giant blue iced gem on my head!" Matt says he shaved it off for the Paralympics as he wanted to let his shooting do all the talking, and boy did he do that. A silver in the R3 Mixed Prone 10m event was rapidly followed by a bronze.

Photos: Chris Brudenell

Matt was also prominent during the Athletes Parade and afterwards got a chance to clink his silver medal against the silver medal of Zara Phillips during the reception held for the GB athletes by David Cameron and Boris Johnson. What with Eye gymnast Louis Smith winning silver and bronze in the Olympics too, and windsurfer Nick Dempsey who trained at Ferry Meadows when he was younger winning silver, we reckon ‘Team PB’ really are winners!

"To have been part of the biggest and most successful shooting team Great Britain has ever had is a great feeling.”

The judging

Our fabulous contestants had to introduce themselves to as many of our sponsors and judges as they could during the first phase of judging called ‘mix and mingle’. Sponsors and special guests met and scored our finalists marking them on personality, ability to chat, style and looks. The Face of ESP has to be able to represent the magazine at all kinds of events throughout the year so the girls needed to show they could work a room!

The main event Guests were entertained by the ESP Dance Crew and talented Peterborough singer Murray Hockridge, fresh from his appearances on BBC’s The Voice. Then the finalists had to show they knew how to have fun, didn’t take themselves too seriously and had real personality. They were split into groups and joined one of the ESP Dance Crew to strut their stuff and have a giggle with hula hoops, air guitar and maracas to some fun tunes. Soon the results were in and it was time for the main judging panel to pick their top six finalists. It was a tough decision and all the girls who didn’t make it through received a fabulous gift bag packed with goodies.

The winner

Our top six finalists gave the main judging panel a hard time choosing as Olivia Landin, Amba Reed, Simona Bajorinaite, Chloe Weaver, Jessica Blake and Paige Agius took to the stage and were interviewed by host Ian Gray. Each had different qualities and were worthy finalists. In the end as the confetti rained down, the runner up was lovely Jessica Blake with 19 year-old Simona Bajorinaite from Stilton taking the title of Face of ESP’12 and scooping some amazing prizes. What a fabulous night!

PROMETHEUS (15) Released: October 8 In space no-one can hear your screams of anguish – as one of the biggest summer disappointments lands on Blu-ray. The crew of the space vessel Prometheus – which impressively includes Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Michael Fassbender (XMen: First Class) and Oscarwinner Charlize Theron (Monster) – are sent on a journey to the far reaches of the universe after a team of

explorers discover a clue to the origin of humanity. And as a standalone sci-fi thriller it would be more than passable, but too many plot-holes, bad use of star talent, and a very messy ending makes Ridley Scott’s semi-Alien prequel infuriatingly tedious. There’s a lot of potential with a pretty compelling first hour, but when two dumb explorers inexplicably make a wrong turn and have

their first experience with an alien organism – the movie quickly goes south. The script quickly becomes surprisingly clichéd, and with Ridley’s questions never satisfactorily answered – it really isn’t fit to be mentioned in the same breath as the first two films in the franchise.

Stoptober challenge for peterborough’S SmokerS

berry beautiful This season is all about dramatic berry shades; think vintage red wine, deep plums and burnished burgundy. So, don’t be a gooseberry and ensure you’re berry beautiful this season by indulging in the truly luxurious look of berry shades with these winning products and looks… For vampish lips try Pixi Lip and Line in No.7 Bare Berry. This stay on lipstick is full of anti-ageing ingredients to provide maximum hydration as well as giving you a real edge to your look. One of my favourites is Confident Liquid Lips from Lush, £14.50; a deep plum for a captivating burgundy pout. Wear either of these alongside a flawless complexion for a key classic look this winter.

Although it looks best to keep the rest of your make up toned down, it’s OK to also wear a strong, deep colour on your nails as well as your mouth. There are some gorgeous berry nail varnish shades out there at the moment, perfect for day or night. Try Barbara Daly for Tesco new fairytale nail shades in Magic; a cute autumn plum with a silver shimmer, great for a night out or paint on Potion which is the perfect berry colour for this season. With so many berry-licious products out there to ‘pick’ from, what will your favourite shade of berry be?

Rich plums are perfect for this season as they look stunning teamed with greys, purples and mauves; the complete colour palette that the upcoming autumn is bringing. When wearing a strong colour on a statement feature, such as lips, the rest of your make up should be kept minimal and fairly natural. Neutral colours look especially pretty swept across the lid or create a soft smoky eye with muted shades. Try Nars Vent Glace duo eyeshadow, RRP £24, which combines two cool toned shades; a platinum with grey/silver undertones and a light but dirty khaki colour. They look fab when teamed with a deep, warm lip and make a pleasant change from the usual browns.

During October, smokers in Peterborough are being urged to take part in the first ever mass quit event launched by the Department of Health – Stoptober! It’s true that if you can stop smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to stay smoke free and this 28 day quitting challenge gives smokers a step by step programme to help them achieve this goal. As well as there being loads of free advice online, the campaign also includes a preparation pack, 28 day Quit Calendar and Health & Wealth wheel. Smokers will also receive support, celebrity inspiration and expert advice on Facebook, through text messages and via the Stoptober App which is available on Smartphones. Smoking is one of the biggest causes of premature death in Peterborough and accounts for over 100,000 deaths each year in the UK. Not only will you reduce your risk of heart disease and lung cancer if you stop smoking but you’ll also be better off financially as well as noticing physical improvements such as a better sense of smell and taste. Stoptober starts on Monday October 1 and lasts for 28 days…. it’s like October but without cigarettes. For more info visit smokefree.nhs.uk/Stoptober.

Murray (Mickey Pearce) and Paul Barber (Denzel) but there’ll be plenty of surprise guests. There'll be autographs with the cast which are FREE (unlike most other events of this kind), a life sized replica of the Trotter van will be on display, costumes/outfits and props from the show, stuff to buy like Pekham Spring and they’ll also be screening rare/lost episodes from the show.

The Convention is now in its 15th year, and each year gets taken to a different city. One of the main reasons it's coming to Peterborough is because when Boycie & Marlene did their live show at The Key in 2010 it was the most popular of the tour, so John Challis and Sue Holderness suggested to Perry who organises the convention that it should come here. Both of them are confirmed to be appearing, along with actors Patrick

Yes, it's nearly here and I can hardly contain my excitement because for the first time in its history the annual Only Fools & Horses convention is coming to Peterborough! It’s all happening on Sunday October 28 at the Bushfield Leisure Centre in Orton from 10am-6pm. Tickets are just £5 each and I can assure you that if you're a fan of the show you will not be disappointed.

The Solstice Comedy Nights

There'll be the actual Trotter flat from the BBC set which has been recreated where you can sit on the sofa and have a pic taken with the Delboy and Uncle Albert lookalikes. How good is that?! My only advice is to get your tickets in advance or get there early, and if you want to meet the actors to get photos/autographs expect to queue because people come from all over the country to the convention. It's going to be a pukka day and I can't wait to show Perry and the cast how passionate Peterborough people are about the show. See you there! www.onlyfools.net The other good news is you can catch Boycie at his book signing at Waterstones the day before! Actor and author John Challis will be there on Saturday October 27 between 2.30pm–4pm signing copies of his great autobiography Being Boycie.

BOBBY'S A DIAMOND GEEZER Last month, comedian and ex EastEnders actor Bobby Davro was the auctioneer at the Tony Hadley Golf Classic Gala Dinner, a charity night for Action Medical Research at The Marriott Hotel at Lynchwood. This is a charity very close to my heart as it funds research to help stop the suffering of babies and children caused by disease and disability. Thanks to Bobby's years of experience as a comedian he found a number of ways of 'persuading' the audience to bid for a range of auction items that raised nearly £11,000 for AMR. The evening ended with Bobby joining Tony on stage along with Dean Martin impersonator Mark Adams as they belted out a number of crowd-pleasing swing classics. “one of the best authentic Indian restaurants in the heart of the city centre”

FOOD REVIEW

BANYAN TREE 53 Westgate, Peterborough, PE1 1QA. Tel: 01733 342800. www.thebanyantree-uk.com

The Banyan Tree on Westgate has quickly established itself as one of the best authentic Indian restaurants in the heart of the city centre. Owner Dinesh Odedra has restored the stunning old Royal Hotel building and made it home to a chic restaurant serving real Indian regional cooking. We popped by one lunchtime to try out some of the dishes that are currently on the menu. All food here is prepared using traditional methods and each dish has been carefully selected for its individual taste. The chefs believe that this sets them apart from other standard Indian menus.

We of course had to have a starter, which was a special mixed starter with marinated chicken, lamb and tiger prawns – the perfect selection for all! Both the chicken and lamb were tender with just a hint of those Indian spices, and the prawns were a generous size, juicy and full of flavour. There were two side dips – a red beetroot dip and a coriander, ginger, garlic and green chilli dip – both were delicious. The main courses soon followed and we were lucky enough to try out three of the gorgeous dishes. On our table was a Goan fish curry – fish which is simmered in a tangy curry sauce made from coconut and Goan red chillies. The sauce was to die for with a slight kick of heat from the chilies. This dish went perfectly with the side of coriander and garlic naan bread and tandoori bread with light puffed layers known as Lachcha Paratha. The second main was a creamy lamb korma – ideal for those who can’t handle too much spice. The lamb was

TV celeb chef's 'POSH' nosh recipe Television chef Gino D'Acampo has devised a special recipe following his recent visit to the city. The recipe, distributed to his adoring fans at the two-day Italian Festival, is called POSH and features pasta with stilton and spinach.

ESP’s Susan Saunders and Gino

Photo: Chris Brudenell

Gino, one time winner of the television show I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! was the guest of the Italian Community Association, which funded and organised the festival with the support of Peterborough City Council. "The recipe features my favourite cheese mozzarella, but also cheddar, which I like, and the local cheese, Stilton," explained Gino, who took part in the light hearted quiz ‘Pizza or Peterborough’ masterminded by the host on the Sunday afternoon, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's Paul Stainton. Carmela Cocozza, who represents the association, said: "The recipe is great and now we have our very own POSH nosh as a keepsake of Gino's visit. The festival was wonderful and it was lovely to see the city come to life sharing and enjoying the Italian culture. The support was overwhelming."

RECIPE – Serves 4

Preparation

Ingredients 500g dried Fusilli 200ml of full fat milk 500g stilton cheese cut into cubes 80g grated cheddar 1 mozzarella ball, drained and cut into cubes 50g freshly grated Parmesan cheese 50g roughly chopped spinach leaves 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika Salt to taste

1. Pour the milk in a medium size saucepan and add in the stilton and cheddar cheese.

www.espmag.co.uk

2. On a medium heat gently melt the cheeses in the milk stirring with a wooden spoon. 3. Once the cheeses are melted, add in the spinach and the paprika. Season with a little salt and set aside. 4. In a large saucepan cook the pasta in the salted boiling water until al dente. To get the al dente

perfect bite, cook the pasta one minute less than instructed on the packet.

succulent and tender and we once again finished off the sauce using our bread to soak up the amazing flavours. The third main was butter chicken – again a milder sauce so nothing that’s going to blow your head off! The strips of tender chicken were in a sauce which oozed with those authentic flavours and was very moorish indeed! There was a side dish of rice too, the perfect accompaniment to a curry. You can really tell that the chefs here go the extra mile to make their food that little bit more innovative and they put together good quality ingredients to create amazing flavours and textures. We would certainly recommend trying out the food at the Banyan Tree. If you like Indian food then you’ll love this! Try their South Indian dishes on Sundays or pop in and try the lunchtime menu. BEEF, BEER AND PLENTY OF GOOD CHEER Now the summer’s drawn to a close, many of you will be starting to think about where to hold your Christmas party. Beef And Beer is a special event with a difference, raising funds for the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall hospice in Peterborough. Delicious sirloin of beef carved at the table and unlimited Ufford ale – yes that’s unlimited beer – will be served during a four-course dinner at Greetham Valley Hotel on Friday November 16. Adorned with a chef’s hat and apron guests will be given the opportunity to carve the beef for the guests on their table as well as joining in fun and games on the night. Billed as ‘the ultimate party of the year’, the evening will include casino tables and an auction as well as entertainment to make the evening go with a swing.

5. Once the pasta is cooked, drain and tip back into the same pan where you cooked it.

The good news is you can really make the most of the free beer as a party bus will be laid on from Peterborough – we like it!

6. Pour over the cheese sauce with the mozzarella and Parmesan on a low heat, stir all together for 20 seconds allowing the flavours to combine properly and the sauce to thicken.

Organiser Jackie Page told ESP – “This is a black tie event with a difference making it the ideal choice for your office Christmas party.”

7. Serve hot immediately.

Tickets are £49 per head which includes unlimited beer. All proceeds will go towards patient care at Thorpe Hall Hospice. For more info and to book, call 01733 330060 or email thorpe.fundraising@sueryder.org.

A PLATEFUL OF COLOUR IN 2012 ESP’s local nutritional expert Karen Devine continues her series on eating a ‘rainbow’ for better health – make sure you have a plateful of colour every meal time and you’ll reap the benefits… Natural chemicals in plant foods are known to protect, heal and repair our body. Eating a diet high in various colours from plant foods will bring a host of phytochemicals (chemicals from plants) which are known to deliver health benefits along with the vitamins, minerals and fibre they also contain. Probably the most popular vegetable is the humble pea, however peas are botanically a fruit and not the veggie we think they are. There are many varieties but the most commonly used in many households will be the good old garden pea. We tend to eat these frozen as they’re mainly cultivated during the winter and early spring, so with the pea season getting closer you might find some fresh ones in the shops which are great eaten straight from the pod or steamed slightly.

Like many other fruits/vegetables, peas offer some outstanding nutrition from Vitamin C to K (good for bone health) lots of fibre, good protein and more. But much of the nutritional power comes from the many phytochemicals or phytonutrients contained in the pea. As with most vegetables, lightly steaming or blanching is the best way to maintain the nutrients. Peas are mainly harvested and frozen to keep the nutrients locked in so try not to cook them too long after this. After all, as the old Birds Eye slogan said – ‘Sweet as the moment when the pod went pop’... so hands up who remembers that advert?!

Two of the biggies come from saponins and coumestrol but it is said that the combination of all the phytonutrients in the pea may offer many health benefits including: • Blood sugar regulation – this will also come from the protein and fibre in the pea • Anti inflammatory • Anti oxidant • Anti – cancer protection (particularly of the stomach because of the coumesterol content in the pea)

Stamford CALLING DISCO NIGHT WILL BE FAB!

THE THEATRE LOUNGE OPENS

Prepare for a unique take on disco nights this November when the UKs only disco sing-along extravaganza stops into the Stamford Corn Exchange. ‘It’s a Disco Night’ features a seven piece live band, 70’s icon Tony Blackburn appearing as a virtual DJ, a big screen showcasing the lyrics for every song, special effects and a few surprises! The show builds on the popularity of theatrical sing-along events which have seen a tremendous rise in demand after shows such as Glee and BBC’s Last Choir Standing. Audience participation is encouraged from the start and throughout the show with fancy dress also encouraged but not essential, it’s a great excuse to dust off the white suit and platform shoes however!

It’s great to see the old Toreador bar brought to life again as a stylish new dining area and as part of the Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre on Broad Street. It’s always great to make a real night out of it and enjoy dinner and a show!

The show features Brit Award winning Paul Marazzi who had a string of hits with boy band A1 and as mentioned before a live band comprised of highly experienced musicians who’ve played with top names such as Sting and Eric Clapton! The high energy atmosphere ensures a stunning and memorable night out for music fans of all ages so you’re sure to have a brilliant time where you’re the star of the show. So if you have Saturday Night Fever on Saturday November 3 get down to the Stamford Corn Exchange and dance the night away! Alex Jones

There’ll also be some special events coming up to look forward to at the Theatre Lounge. On Friday October 19 they’re holding a French evening dinner with four courses and live music at £45 per head. On Saturday October 27 you can celebrate at their Halloween party – a buffet dinner with entertainment at £18 per head. BEN VENTURES TO THE CITY ESP’s Susan Saunders ventured into the world of Ben Fogle on his recent visit to Peterborough and found him a charming character with plenty of tales to tell…

Adventurer. The same is true for the Accidental Naturalist, this follow on version, whilst although I wanted to be a vet and work with animals, I failed all of my exams. It certainly looked as a child that I rarely got any opportunities so it was an accident. It has almost become the story of my life; most things have been an accident. I’ve already got a third lined up in the trilogy – The Accidental Encounters – which will be encounters with people that should’ve never really happened but did and many of those have happened over the years.” So what’s next Mr Ben Fogle, come Christopher Columbus? “There are lots of adventures I’d still like to do, a big challenge I have planned for next year is swimming the Atlantic. In terms of animals, I’d still love to see gorillas in the wild; I’ve never had a chance to see them in their natural habitat yet. “There are a few TV shows that I’m working on now for next year with ITV, one’s called Harbour Lives, following fishermen and everyone who works in Poole harbour – it’s nice for me to be working back in Britain. I’m also doing a series called Storm City for Sky, all about hurricanes and earthquakes, so I have lots of things to keep me busy.” Talking to Ben with his natural boldness for new adventures and confidence puts you at ease, like there’d never be anything to worry or feel nervous about but he confessed – “I was actually terrified about writing as you’re laying yourself bare on a page!” So I ask Ben to dream for a moment, out of all of these amazing experiences, what would he have loved to do that he hasn’t?

SP rarely lets a celeb pass us by so when Ben Fogle dropped by the Central Library to give a talk and sign copies of his latest book I was the first with my hand up to track down this adventurer for a word or two!

E

“The Accidental Naturalist is about my wild life – the wild encounters I’ve had over the years and the more natural of my two books,” Ben told me. “My dad is a vet – so growing up, I was always around animals. I write about working at Longleat (Animal Park TV series), swimming with crocodiles, swimming with whales in Sri Lanka – conservation, farming, my time on BBC’s Country File and the main thread through this book is my late dog, Inca, who I very sadly had to put down last year. She was the thread through all the wild encounters I’ve had over the years. I’d probably argue that Inca is the main thread. She’s the reason I met my wife, walking through the park – it’s kind of about her in many ways.” Not only a dish, but a sentimental dish too – ladies could you ask for any more?! Why ‘Accidental’ I wonder? “Certainly the first book (The Accidental Adventurer) was how I wasn’t academic or very sporty at school so it was almost an accident that I became what I suppose I’d describe as an

Maybe like bumping into his future wife whilst out walking the dogs – what are the chances of that happening? “I do believe that life is a destiny, a course, a final point that we’re all heading towards but you make your own course through it. I think we all have the power to change, steer and adjust it, which I’ve done. Most of it has been an accident and for some people that can be the most exciting way; you never know what’s around the next corner.” Hmmm… rather deep indeed but most ladies appreciate talking to a man with hidden depths so we’re OK! In the same way as pondering what to get someone who has everything for Christmas, how does someone who’s explored the world pick a most memorable adventure? “I’d say my most memorable adventure was swimming with crocodiles in Botswana and in Australia. Having said that, I love Africa and have spent huge amounts of time in Namibia, southern Africa, filming two series with the BBC called Wild in Africa. We spent time following people, rangers, vets, wildlife experts, everyone who looks after the conservation of Africa. We lived there for months on end and so, in terms of a place, that would be one of my most memorable, which makes up a huge part of the book.”

“I’d love to go to Latin America – it was always my dream – to do some climbing with the late Edmund Hilary,” (the first man to climb Mount Everest) Ben confessed. “I never had a chance to meet him and wish I had. He’d be my ultimate climbing companion.” When he’s not exploring or dreaming of climbing, he’s perfectly down to earth like the rest of us, busy looking after his kids. “I’d never push my children to do what I do, but if they love it and they’re attracted to it I’d be very proud. If they love the outdoors and wildlife, I’d certainly like them to pursue that but I’d never force them. The likes of Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly are still a bit cooler than I am in their world but hopefully some day that will change!” Perhaps the only solution would be to create a Ben Fogle Adventurer character for a children’s series? “I do have plans to write a children’s book now you mention it...” Phew, I’m exhausted just listening to Ben’s ‘to do’ and ‘have done’ list! My life, by comparison, seems like a drop in a very big ocean so if you would like to take a walk on the wild side with Ben, The Accidental Naturalist is available now from all good book shops – RRP £18.99.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

dozens of UK metal and heavy rock bands.

Former Prodigy guitarist Gizz Butt’s group The More I See is headlining shows in South Germany while their album’s being mixed by Scott Atkins. The band’s spent six months intensive work in the studio recording their much anticipated fourth album and Scott’s known for the crushing production he’s given

“Now Scott Atkins is at the mix there’s a definite confidence between us that he’ll represent with full strength what we’ve created,” Gizz told us. Having played their first return UK show recently, the revamped four piece will headline shows in Straubing, Landshut and Regenburg near Munich. These are the first shows since band guitarist James Cluer stepped up as lead vocalist. In Gizz’s words – “James is the greatest metal vocalist I’ve ever worked with and his performances on the album are unmatchable.” The band, established in 2003, combines a

mix of progressive metal, hard rock, classic rock and punk and is known for its exciting stage shows. It attracts a strong following due to its links with bands Crass, Sabbat, English Dogs and of course The Prodigy. This will be the band’s first tour since successful appearances at Download, Hammerfest and Hellfest along with full European tours in venues such as The Underworld in Koln and The Logo in Hamburg. Catch them locally this month on Saturday October 6 at The London Inn, Stamford, on Friday October 12 at The Cherry Tree in Peterborough and on Saturday October 20 at the Swiss Cottage.

There was some fantastico music at the Italian Festival recently including classical pianist Fabio D’Andrea who has strong links with the city and has recently launched his debut album Reflection.

Two young Peterborough singers have been in touch to let us know they’ve made it through to the regional finals of Open Mic UK and it’s great to see local talent doing so well.

Jessi Wise

Jessi Wise from Peterborough and 13 year-old Samm Coward from Hampton Hargate have both been given the big thumbs up by judges at the Open Mic UK auditions. Along with other impressive acts, they’ve made it through to the Regional Finals and will now be performing at the live stages of Open Mic UK 2012. They’ll be performing in front of hundreds of audience members and a professional judging panel to win a place at the National Grand Final.

Jessi Wise is 15 years-old and attends Stanground Academy in Peterborough. She joined Wildcats Theatre School about two years ago, where she found her voice and a passion for singing and Samm Coward has already notched up a number of performances. Meanwhile talented Samm made the line-up of Misicalize at the Peterborough Arena alongside Lovable Rogues, Loick Essien and many more signed artists. The latter stages of the competition will also provide acts with the opportunity to impress influential guests from the music industry. Show them your support and pick up tickets from the website www.openmicuk.co.uk or on the door subject to availability.

Born and brought up in the area, Fabio was a chorister at Peterborough Cathedral as a boy and was a childhood prodigy. He performed for the Queen at the age of 10. His family are at the heart of the Peterborough community – his father, Mario, is a Director of Green Energy Parks, a renewable energy firm who are the sponsors of Peterborough United.

There’s a great night of live music coming up at the Peterborough Sports and Leisure Club in Peterborough in memory of local musician Danny Welsh. Danny was the lead singer of bands Quarto And, Lucifer Blues and Riot TV – music was his passion and he was well known on the Peterborough scene. Sadly Danny passed away in February aged just 30 due to a cancerous brain tumour he’d been battling with for the last five years of his life. It would’ve been his birthday on Friday October 26 so in celebration of his memory his friend Kirsty King is organising The Danny Welsh Tribute Night. There’s a great line-up of bands: White Spirit (rock cover band) The Zoots (semi-acoustic band with a blend of various genres) and The Deuce Coupe (original band) as well as solo artists: Nik Miller (original song writer) and Michael 'Mixy' Riccardi (lyricist, poet and rapper). Admission’s £5 by ticket or £6 on the door and they can be bought in advance on 07887 925041 or by emailing kingy.83@hotmail.co.uk or facebook: Kirsty Jo-Ann King. All proceeds will go to brain tumour research.

Country music star Jon Derek who lived in Peterborough for more than 20 years up until his sad passing last year, received a posthumous accolade at this year’s British Country Music Awards held in London recently – he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Hosted by BBC TV & Radio Personality Nicky Campbell and, last year’s inductee, singer/songwriter Charlie Landsborough, Jon's son Mark Derek was there to collect the award and pay tribute to his late father. His proud son Mark told ESP – “Dad was one of the very first British artists to venture into Country Music back in the late 1950's/early 1960's. He was a true professional in every sense of the word and had a glittering career that resulted in him appearing at some of the most prestigious venues and

Although I often keep you informed about the local gigs and bands I have news of a different type of local musician who’ll appeal to classical fans.

Fabio’s debut album Reflection promises to appeal far and wide to listeners across both the traditional and contemporary classical music scenes. The album was ‘Album of the Week’ on Classic FM and has done incredibly well for an independent, against the more established artists who are backed by major labels, and has made the top ten of the Classical Specialists Chart. Fabio told ESP – “The album was inspired by the tranquility of night, the beauty of moonlight and the power of dreams; featuring classics of the past, classics of the present and - hopefully and self deprecatingly - classics of the future.” As well as travelling the world as a pianist, he’s written songs for X Factor stars and composed the score for the forthcoming British gangster film Woolwich Boys. You can find out more on Fabio’s website – www.fabiodandrea.com.

saw him perform with an endless list of the finest names in Country.” Jon Derek’s pedigree was second to none, having won a number of awards. He shared the stage with a plethora of superstars and was one of the most popular acts on the British Country Music club/festival circuit. Mark added – “He may be gone but the name Jon Derek is certainly not forgotten! There’s been a resurgence in his career in the past 12 months and in fact I’m currently in talks with a top record label boss who’s very interested in bringing out a double CD of my father’s back-catalogue of recordings. All going well, this should be due for release early 2013.” www.jonderek.com
