Full of freedom and high spirits they meet a handsome young American who invites them to a dance at the local U.S. Air Force base. Next on Thursday October 10 is 'Mud' featuring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon. This film tells the story of two 14-year-old boys growing up in a small town beside the Mississippi river. They come across a handsome, charismatic man called Mud (Matthew McConaughey). When it transpires he's on the run for what he claims to be a justified homicide down in Texas, the boys enter into a pact to provide him with food and help him restore his boat as a means of escape. On Thursday October 17 the cinema will be showing 'I'm So Excited'. Pedro Almodóvar's new film is a cheeky comedy about stressy homosexuals on an aeroplane trip which isn't getting anywhere. They are joined by some stressy heterosexuals as well as a danger that no one, least of all the audience, is taking all that seriously. The movie is Almodóvar's satirical venting of frustration with life in modern era Spain – a troubled country that the plane is making its hazardous and entirely ineffective attempt to leave. The Penultimate film shown on Thursday October 24 is 'Good Vibrations'. This cheerful film reconstructs the deeply divided Belfast of the late 1970s through the career of Terri Hooley (Richard Dormer), who opened a record shop called Good Vibrations to express his belief in the redemptive power of popular music. A firm advocate of Punk he described it as the sound that would unite rebellious, non-sectarian youth in Ulster, promoting it on his own label and ultimately receiving the blessing of John Peel and Joe Strummer. The final film showing this month on Thursday October 31 is called 'Compliance'. Craig Zobel's film grips from the outset as it tells the story of a malevolent prankster who aims to disrupt the staff of a fast-food joint. Pretending to be a cop, he catches Sandra, the manageress, and persuades her that 23-year-old Becky, the pretty blonde on the till, has stolen money from a customer. The charges, threats and demands escalate, and soon most of the staff are involved in demeaning, humiliating and compromising activities.

The celebrations begin on Saturday October 19 and Sunday October 20 for the annual Pumpkin Festival. Carve a face into a pumpkin to take home with you then enjoy some spooky arts and crafts.

A newly formed choir of men from across Peterborough is set to take the Voyager Auditorium by storm on Saturday October 5 in an unmissable gala charity performance. Sing for Heroes! was launched by Peterborough Male Voice Choir in July with the aim of taking a group of men with varying musical experience and turning them into a choir in the space of 12 short weeks! The concert’s raising money for Help for Heroes, a charity formed to help those who’ve been wounded in Britain’s current conflicts. There’ll be something for everyone with a mix of choral favourites, ballads, songs from the shows and chart hits. The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets from £12 are available from Peterborough Visitor Information Centre 01733 452336 or online at www.peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk

FIND ME KEEP ME PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION @ THE CITY GALLERY On a chilly Saturday in March hundreds of unique pieces of art were left across the city centre for local people and visitors to Find and Keep. Were you there that day? What did you find? Where is its new home? Photographers Mel Evans and Chris Porsz documented the project for a photography exhibition at Peterborough City Gallery that celebrates the city's creative talent and generosity, opening on Saturday October 12 and running until Sunday November 17. From poetry beer-mats to magical pop-up books, from sonnet medicine to street art pizza-boxes, these gifts from the artists of Peterborough delighted their new owners. The Find Me Keep Me exhibition captures the mood of this delightful project which shows that our local artists do amazing things and that the people and visitors of Peterborough love their art, even if they have to hunt for it in the nooks and crannies of the city centre! For more info about the exhibition please contact the City Gallery on 01733 864663. Alex Jones

For those looking for a few frights this Halloween, ESP’s Mikey Clarke has been looking up the most spooktacular destinations… Let’s be honest, many of us have a habit of saying – “There’s nothing to do” – without actually looking up whether there is anything to do! I’ve listed below a few places that will be going bump in the night this Halloween. So, when it comes towards the big day; I don’t want to hear anybody sulking about the lack of activities taking place. Firstly thrill seekers… have you ever taken part in the Peterborough Ghost Walk? No? Having done it twice myself, I highly recommend you give it a go. After hearing all the creepy tales, you’ll never look at our city in the same way again. This year’s Halloween Ghost Walks take place at the Museum from Monday October 28 – Friday November 1, 7.30pm and 8pm. Early booking is advised to avoid disappointment! Adults £5, concessions £3.

transformed into a witch’s hovel. As part of their regular tractor ride, the Sacrewell Witches will lure you into their scary sanctum to gobble you up for their dinner! Will you get out alive? Or will you manage to escape with a treasure from the witches’ cauldron? And of course, as always, you can feed the friendly animals, let off some steam in the heated Activity Barn and stop for a bowl of hot soup in Fresh. Their activities are designed for children of all ages and will be running throughout the day, every day! Monday October 28 – Friday November 1 sees the Skylark Maize Maze and Funyard Week of Wickedness. During this week, it’ll be open from 10am to 4pm, with the last entry at 3pm. There’ll be the usual funyard attractions plus, apple bobbing, pumpkin shy, pumpkin carving, face painting and fancy dress. It’s worth noting that Summer Season Tickets are not valid for the maze and funyard during the Week of Wickedness. advance with tickets £7.50. Wansford station will be decorated with pumpkin lanterns and all things ghoulish, you’ll receive a glow stick and climb aboard the special Halloween train for a trip through the haunted tunnel. After a brief pause at Wellwarts station (look out of the window if you dare) the train will return to Wansford where you can enjoy either a hot dog or a burger and maybe a few sweet treats.

For something extra spooky (and new for 2013) check out the Halloween Horror Night on Saturday October 26. Tours take place every 30 mins from 7pm – 9.30pm at the Museum (Peterborough’s most haunted venue, apparently). This horror night promises to be one you won’t forget in a hurry! You’ll be guided around the building by candlelight alone and hear stories of ghostly goings-on, so beware the spectres lurking around corners. In the eerie darkness, characters and effects will bring the stories to life. Adults £6, concessions £4. Strictly over 14s only and tours are limited to 15 people.

Photos: Emma Bothamley

There’s something for the kids at the Museum too. The Half Term Whodunit runs from Monday October 28 – Friday November 1, 10am – 5pm. Before taking your youngsters to the venue, explain to them – “There’s been a break-in at Peterborough Museum. Mystery Inc are on the case but they need help to solve the crime. Could it be the work of a ghost, ghoul or a monster?” To find out, take them along, find clues, conduct experiments and follow the evidence to discover who the villain really is!

Younger travellers will enjoy a story read by Wilma the Witch on the carriage parked in Platform 5. You’re encouraged to dress up so witches hats at the ready as there’s a prize for the best. Visit www.nvr.org.uk or call 01780 784444.

SUPPORT OUR INDIE FOOD SCENE Another independent restaurant worth paying a visit to is Pizza Roma on Bridge Street. Here you’ll find pizza cooked the proper Italian way – thin, crispy and with a sprinkle of fresh toppings.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

HASHTAG #when #not #using #Twitter #why #do #people #think #it’s #cool #and #trendy #to #use #hashtags #with #every #Facebook #post #they #write #or #text #message #they #send?!

The owners deserve some credit, as they have no previous experience in the catering business but a passion to serve up cuisine the Rome way shines through. Best of all the restaurant has managed to secure one of the top pizza chefs in Rome to do the business in Peterborough.

It seems I can’t write a column these days without mentioning some of our city restaurants and this month I’m giving a shout out to some of our best independents.

Venturing out of town, The Farmers Carvery & Grill in Yaxley continues to impress diners whose high TripAdvisor ratings have won them the 2013 Certificate of Excellence accolade. This is thoroughly deserved and I’m actually foaming at the mouth at the thought of scoffing one of their fabulous puddings at my next long overdue visit.

Within weeks of opening in their new Key Theatre location, the Clarkes fine dining experience expanded into St John’s Square where the Grapevine pub used to be.

Finally, The Wicked Witch where have you been all my life?! After months of threatening to go I finally got around to making a visit to this excellent eatery in Ryhall, near Stamford and it was worth the wait.

The Michelin ‘3 Fork and Spoon’ rated restaurant started out on Lincoln Road three years ago and if you haven’t been to either of the new Clarkes then trust me you’re missing out.

Choice, service, food presentation and taste – The Wicked Witch has it all and my aim is to munch my way through the menu in the coming months.

Owners Dinesh Odedra and Lee Clarke (pictured) have nurtured a great recipe for success where one looks after business and the other takes care of food.

We all have a part to play in ensuring these independents continue to tantalise our taste buds. Give them a go, you won’t be disappointed.

CAUGHT IN THE ACT!

Wrestling fan Mik ey is all made up aft er meeting his hero Giant Haystacks.

Congratulations to Wayne Daly – subject of last month’s photo – who’ll be tucking into a 12” pizza courtesy of yours truly after emailing this caption: “Oops, I think I’ve just stepped in some rabbit poo.”

BALDERSTON £500 VOUCHER OFFER Man About Town sponsors, Balderston, are giving away vouchers worth £500 when you buy a motorcycle from their used bike sale on Saturday September 28. This one day only offer will mean anyone buying a used bike will receive the voucher to spend against any additional purchase at Balderston including accessories, clothing or servicing. The voucher has a shelf life of 12 months.

CIAOS OUT > 14

www.espmag.co.uk

I must admit I’m tempted but I need a new kitchen. Balderston has always had an excellent used bikes section and during my time with the dealership I’ve seen every kind of bike come in on a part exchange and fly out the very next week. There are currently some cracking examples in the sale including these two beauties (Aprilia and Honda) and a tasty Triumph Bonneville I’ve got my eye on if my numbers come up (can’t own three

bikes and no kitchen). You’ll notice too, hanging up in the background of this photo, is the leather jacket I was banging on about in last month’s column. It turns out Bradley Cooper has the same jacket, which confirms I have taste. It just means my kitchen will be fitted minus a sink and I’ll wash up in the bathroom basin in amongst all the bodily hair, toenail clippings and general human grime currently blocking the plug hole.

>> Suggs – wrap it in foil next time… >> Dale and Bru – “every birthdays” >> Wayne – thanks for being Dinomite! >> Sun – thanks for coming out this year >> Meggie – Spider, SF and ITA – no more £5 “bargains” >> Good luck to friends and colleagues in the PGER!

PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:

ANTIMO RIVETTI

The choice of my local hero this month will baffle most readers. Antimo is a regular guy and he no longer lives in the city after swapping a view of Cathedral Square from our cathedral gates, to a view of the cityscape of San Francisco from the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Antimo left Peterborough to pursue a real estate career in the United States many moons ago but he still pops ‘home’ from time to time and I last caught up with him this summer. Hero is perhaps a little strong to describe Antimo but for me he’s one of those people I can count on two hands that are a breath of fresh air to be around and carry an infectious vibe that’s brilliantly contagious. Unbeknown to ‘Timo’ (as he’s known in San Fran) he was one of my first influences and examples of what a career in public relations would be like. He was and still is a natural PR man. I remember as far back as the mid-1980s when Antimo came to a family BBQ. He was bang on trend with fashion from everything down to the colour of his jeans to the style of his sunglasses. He had a knack of predicting what was going to be big next and could sell sand to the Arabs with his natural gift of the gab. Antimo worked closely with boyhood friends to help set up the UK’s first pizza delivery service – Papa Luigi. Some of the company’s early promotions carry that unique Antimo influence about them. He and the proprietors were masters at creating headline-grabbing publicity for the business – they were known as the ‘scheme team.’

He once said to me: “If there’s no news, make the news.” He came from an era when the local newspaper would call asking for a story to plug a space that needed filling – how times have changed. It was also a time of less science. Antimo had a knack for anticipating what the people wanted, he knew his audience. He didn’t waste time writing plans to justify his intentions – he just got on with it and more often than not he succeeded.

His claim to fame was being the manager of 80s pop group Curiosity Killed The Cat. This took Antimo to even greater heights and it was only a matter of time before the States beckoned. I met up with Antimo on his recent visit back to the Boro and took him and his lifetime friends and then business associates to Pizza Roma on Bridge Street. By their own admission, the owners are still learning the ropes in the pizza arena and how to market a great product, which they definitely have. Antimo couldn’t help himself and gave advice based on two of the best foundations to start any marketing campaign on: nostalgia and novelty. It was good to watch the old master at work after so many years. Salute Antimo and I’ll see you in SF next year.

A ‘Peterborough Invasion’ lit up a magnificent finale to the Peterborough Arts Festival when this year’s headline act Generik Vapeur turned the city centre into a stage. Twenty blue figures performed a pyrotechnic spectacular as they abseiled from the cathedral gates and led hundreds of us on a journey combining music, fire and acrobatics to the Embankment.

It was definitely a show-stopping finale that kept all of us entertained and guessing as to what was going to happen next. Top marks to Vivacity for bringing a slice of the continent to our city and I for one can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2014.

Antimo set up one of the city’s first (if not the first) PR firms called ARPR in the 1980s. He was always trying to bring a bit of the big city to our very own humble surroundings. I remember one of the ideas he had was to bring an F1 style car race to the city but the authorities at the time were too primitive in their thinking to even consider it.

TIME TO CHEER ON

THE RUNNERS! The runners have been training hard for months; the fun runners are squeezing into their super hero outfits and now it’s time for… crowd power! This year spectators are being encouraged to send in their photos of how they’ve celebrated the race so tweet yours on @PerkinsGER or email them through to perkinsgreateasternrun@peterborough.gov.uk If you’re in a band or can provide some entertainment along the route so the runners don’t flag, the organisers would love to hear from you so just email in on the address above. Event photos: Chris Brudenell

The run starts and finishes on the Embankment and there’ll be a real carnival atmosphere there with plenty of entertainment to keep you amused until the runners reach the finish line. It’s always a fantastic day and ESP will be there to capture the atmosphere so see you there for the start of the fun run at 10am and the half marathon at 10.30am. www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk

Yes folks we need you to grab your banners, hand out your jelly babies and cheer on the thousands of runners who’ll be pounding along your streets in this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run. You’ll probably already know someone among the 4,000+ runners in this year’s event on Sunday October 13 and they may be running for charity, fitness or their own personal challenge but whatever their reasons there’s no denying support from crowds along the route will definitely spur them on. ESP reporter Mikey Clarke is running in aid of Arthritis Research UK and our Face of ESP Simona has been cheering him on in training. "I have run the Great Eastern Run a couple of times in the

16

www.espmag.co.uk

past and I can honestly say that without the support of people around the city (holding banners, cheering, etc) I may not have reached the finish line,” says Mikey. “I’ve spoken to many runners who’ve said the same. So please, as this year's run has record numbers running, let's try and get a record number of spectators. Cheer louder, make those banners bigger, and let’s really make this a year to remember!" One of the things that puts the ‘great’ into this run is that it takes place right in the heart of our city, so you’ll get a brilliant view in Cathedral Square, but also past many of our houses so everyone can feel a part of it. So get your deck chairs out, get your neighbours round for a BBQ if the weather’s good and give the runners some encouragement on their way round the half marathon course.

Star Wars creator George Lucas has in the past changed bits of the original Star Wars films by remastering them, but I'm pretty sure we'd have known about it if he decided to change the movies’ most famous phrase. Not even Jar Jar Binks got that wrong! Now, for legal reasons I'm not allowed to print the name of the high street shop that manufactured the pyjamas and then put them on sale in their own shops. So to protect their embarrassment let's just call them Mummycare. All the labelling clearly states that they're an official piece of Star Wars merchandise with the Lucasfilms and Lego trademark logo on them. They're priced at £14 so this isn't some cheap tat being flogged to gullible tourists on holiday either!

PAUL MERTON

H

ey everyone, how does that famous phrase from the Star Wars films go? That's right – 'May the force be with you'. At least that's what I thought it was, but according to this set of pyjamas it's 'May the force to be with you'! I saw this curious wording on a set of kids’ pyjamas when I was shopping for a new pair for my 3 year-old son. I immediately felt a great disturbance in the force, a bit like when Obi-Wan Kenobi finds out the Death Star has blown up Alderaan only much worse.

However you look at it, this all adds up to the greatest mistake in the world of Star Wars since Princess Leia gave medals to Luke and Han for blowing up the Death Star but not Chewbacca!

Star of TV shows Stand up for the Week and Live at the Apollo, the wonderful Sara Pascoe will be performing at the Stamford Arts Centre. Described by the Guardian as 'Nothing less than full mega-watt of charisma’ you don’t want to miss her performance! Support comes from Jessica Fostekew. Tickets are £15 (£13 concessions + £12 students and groups). Box office: 01780 763203.

HAL CRUTTENDEN @ THE KEY

A GREAT DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE

So what's going on? Who's making Star Wars Lego pyjamas – Borat? A talking Russian meerkat from a car insurance advert? Because it's the kind of malapropism you'd associate with them rather than a global company at the forefront of cutting edge computer technology (Lucasfilms), the world’s favourite toy manufacturers (Lego) and a major UK shop store that I can't name for legal reasons so will just call Mummycare. What makes it even more laughable is that the 'May the force to be with you' lettering also glows in the dark, which means someone would've had to test this is out in a darkened room and even then didn't notice and went – “Yeah, that's fine”! That's worse than Yoda appearing in those mobile phone ads! Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope...

STAND UP JOKE As it's Halloween here's my favourite joke from this years Edinburgh Fringe

“What do men do if they want to contact dead single ladies? They hold a seyoncé !” David O’Docherty

The Face of Gorgeous Simona Bajorinaite has spent the last year as the tenth winner of the Face of ESP competition. Simona’s had a great year and although her reign is coming to a close we’re pleased to say that like many of our previous winners she won’t be completely disappearing and will still be joining us at various events and shoots. Simona has taken on more modelling work since winning and has even appeared on a billboard in Hong Kong for a fashion brand!

Why did you enter and were you surprised when you won the competition? “I was flicking through the magazine and saw the competition. I wasn't sure if I wanted to enter at first but my family encouraged me, told me I had nothing to lose and if anything I would have fun and gain more confidence. “I saw what previous winners did and I really wanted to be a part of the team. Other girls that entered were amazing, I didn't think I would win at all! So when I found out I went through to the top 5 I felt like I’d already won, so actually winning the title was definitely one big amazing surprise!” What did that mean to you? “I was so happy to have won, it made me realise that you have to believe in yourself and push yourself to do more and not be scared to show yourself or be yourself.” How did you feel about being on the front cover? “It was so much fun! The cover was on the day after the finals, I was still

smiling from the night before – my cheeks hurt! I remember I was working behind the bar at Edwards at the time and the magazine would be on the bar, customers would look at me and the magazine and look so confused! I’m not going to lie, I was really proud of myself; I’ve never been on a cover!” What have you enjoyed about being the Face of ESP? “The best thing was to meet the ESP team and the many interesting, lovely people that I would never have met if I didn't win the competition! Everything from photoshoots, interviews, meetings to fun activities. Also little presents.” Who have you enjoyed meeting the most and what are you memorable moments? “People I have met are all amazing and I enjoyed spending my time with them all and getting to know them. Everything I did this year was so different to what I expected I would be doing. Winning the title made me gain more confidence and make new friends for life! “If I had to choose one favourite thing I did this year it would be turning the Christmas lights on at Queensgate shopping centre. I never in my life

thought I'd have an opportunity to do that! There are so many things you can do in Peterborough, so many events to be at and places to see and without ESP I wouldn't have done those things!” Would you encourage other girls to enter when the event relaunches next year?

worried about entering the competition. Everyone has something different, something special. Why not enter the competition and show who you are, and like myself you’ll gain more confidence and do things that you wouldn't have done – and make some great new friends!”

happy to be working with the ESP team again and we are particularly pleased that ESP writer Keith Dalton is back on the airwaves again as we see this as a great way to jointly communicate with our listeners and ESP's readers.” Many of the city’s most respected and best known local radio broadcasters such as Dave King, Rob Jones and Stewart Francis are giving up their time to make a return to the airwaves. Many new voices, trained by the station, will also be heard presenting a whole range of programmes during the evenings and at weekends. Local news will be supplied by The Peterborough Telegraph Newspaper and tunes wise you can expect the best songs of today and yesterday – making it a vibrant feel good sound.

Radio Peterborough is set to go live once again and ESP writer Keith Dalton is one of the flagship on-air team. Radio Peterborough 106.2 FM makes a long awaited return on Sunday November 3 from its studios at the Herlington Centre, Peterborough. The station will again broadcast 24 hours a day for one month. Keith, who’s been ESP’s live music columnist for several years was a well known voice on former Peterborough radio station Lite FM. He’s an experienced broadcaster with a love of the local live music scene and will be on air from 10am – 1pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the month long broadcast. It’s the fourth time the station’s gone on air under a Restricted Service Licence (RSL) – the three previous broadcasts were in June and November 2010 and lastly in June 2012.

Keith says he’s looking forward to taking to the mic once again – “It’s great to have another media outlet in the city again that’s truly local, just like ESP, and I’m looking forward to giving air time to more of the great local bands and musicians the city has to offer. You’ve read about them often in my columns – this is a great chance for me to further promote the city’s talent and to play some of my favourite songs.”

If you’d like to get involved in any way just contact the station via email studio@radiopeterborough.co.uk or visit www.radiopeterborough.co.uk

ESP editor Sharon McAllister will also be dropping in each Friday to give a what’s on round up. The weekends will see the return of the popular Keith & Claire show at lunchtimes as the two engage in their usual banter! The station is run and operated by local volunteers with former managing director of Lite FM Wayne Fitzgerald assisting with project management. The eventual aim of the station is to re-establish a local radio station actually based in Peterborough. Wayne says – "Radio Peterborough has an important role to play in the community just like ESP and we believe very much in sharing local information and promoting what's best about Peterborough and its people. Hugh Jackman stars as a desperate parent who takes matters into his own hands when his daughter and her best friend go missing – and the main suspect gets released by Jake Gyllenhaal’s detective due to lack of evidence. An all-star cast, including Oscarnominees Terrence Howard (Iron Man) and Viola Davis (The Help), star in this highly-rated thriller.

When Justin Timberlake’s poor college student goes bust after initially striking it rich on an online poker game, he arranges a face-toface meeting with the entrepreneur (Ben Affleck) he thinks swindled him out of his fortune – then gets drawn into the high stakes world of gambling. Brit actress Gemma Arterton and The Hurt Locker’s Anthony Mackie co-star.

##### GRAND THEFT AUTO V (PS3/360) Out now What an absolute game! It’s extremely fitting that Rockstar Games close out this generation of consoles with an absolute bang – by providing arguably the most impressive game of all-time. GTA V has been billed as the most expensive game ever made – and in the sprawling open world of Los Santos delivers a world on an

#### unprecedented scale that has to be truly experienced to be believed. With a plethora of things to do – from tennis and flying to hunting and diving – the world is your oyster, but it’s the heists in this land of economic uncertainty that is the real icing on the Grand Theft Auto cake. The boundaries of sex, drugs and violence are sometimes taken to the extreme – but this is one game that all gaming fans (over 18) should experience. Buy it now . . . and play it for months.

DISNEY INFINITY (360/PS3/WIIU/3DS/PC) Out now There’s absolutely no arguing that Disney’s Skylanders-esque gaming experience is a money-spinner – but if you’re a fan of The House of Mouse, oh boy is it fun. Disney Infinity unlocks the freedom to play with some of your favourite Disney and Pixar characters – specifically Jack Sparrow, Sulley

RAYMAN LEGENDS

Battling the eternal war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells with up to four players is arguably as good as the PC version – particularly with a console user interface that is extremely efficient.

Mario would still argue the point for the WiiU, but this is simply an astounding game in both single or co-op modes that gets increasingly better during its minimum 12 hour duration.

####

LOST PLANET 3 (PS3/360/PC) Out now

MADDEN NFL 25 (360/PS3) Out now Every year incremental improvements expand on the previous version – but for its Silver Anniversary there’s much to celebrate. The John Madden franchise is 25 years-old, but powered by EA Sport’s Ignite engine this series has come far – with a combo ‘precision modifier’ and detail that is ten times better than any other previous game.

Sadly the game mechanics feel a little unfinished with clunky controls and lack of alien invention – but it’s still well worth delving deeper into the Lost Planet universe.

####

FARMING SIMULATOR

Never has robbing a bank or convenience store been so gratifying than in this co-op shooter for up to four-players.

There’s been surprisingly a lot of buzz in the gaming press for this impressive erm… farming series hitting home consoles.

The impressive Crime.Net network offers a plethora of contracts to undertake as you and your masked buddies plan your assault – with stealth heavily rewarded as guard and camera positions are randomly changed to keep you on your toes.

Without too much knowledge on the subject, the business simulation side of the game is decently crafted – with virtual farming providing a sometimes tranquil experience with its rich showcase of machinery, vehicles and tools. Despite falling short in some departments with some irksome graphical and technical issues – there’s much to admire for simulation, and not just farming, fans.

The main core of the game is simply better than ever, and even though additions aren’t plentiful it doesn’t change that winning formula – and scores another impressive touchdown.

PAYDAY 2 (PS3/360) Out now

(360/PS3/PC) Out now

###

Even with the generally uninspiring graphics, taking on ancient demon hordes in one of five powerful character classes is simply sensational stuff for RPG fans – and this is no lazy port.

This game has been tagged a disappointment in some quarters – but persistence reaps rewards with a lot to like in this ice world-based thirdperson shooter. This prequel provides a well-acted story behind main character James Peyton’s time on this eerie planet, with some decent robotic mech action thrown in as you tackle this monster-infested landscape.

###

Despite some fiddly control mechanics this is ultimately a dream for Disney fans (with or without kids), and if you can get over this very deliberate ‘cashing-in’ production – it does literally open a whole new world.

This epic action role playing game has now been tailored to make the exciting transition to home consoles.

Talking of the best games of this current generation of consoles – this is arguably the best platformer to have hit 360 and PS3 at the very least.

#####

These characters are brought to life on the Infinity Base, and experiences can be expanded with the addition of separately purchased Power Discs.

DIABLO III (PS3/360/PC) Out now

(360/PS3/WIIU/PSV/PC) Out now

With beautiful level design and a fantastic palette of graphical colours, Rayman has just become a legend for gamers of all ages.

and Mr Incredible in the starter pack – which leads to Play Set ‘story’ (also available with the likes of Cars, Lone Ranger and soon Toy Story) or Toy Box ‘open world’ modes (which boasts a vast collection of tools, gadgets and themes).

###

The broken single-player campaign and so-so graphics prevent it from really pushing the genre – but as a co-op game this offers some deep and rewarding strategy.

THE ‘PINKIES’ HIT PETERBOROUGH! I think it was girl next door turned sex kitten Miley Cyrus who said – "Pink isn't just a colour it's an attitude too," and that fact was certainly evident at the annual Pink Car Rally which stopped off in Peterborough recently. Lee Arnold, general manager

MOTORPOINT GOES THE EXTRA MILE FOR CUSTOMERS

The Pink Car Rally was a ‘two days, two destinations’ event this year and day two took them from Lincoln to Peterborough City Hospital after a brief stop at Springfield’s in Spalding. "It was the most incredible rally," explained organiser Sali Gray. “Peterborough City Hospital gave us the warmest welcome imaginable. We were greeted by staff, patients and supporters at both of the destination hospitals, which was really touching, particularly as some of the children waiting to see the pink cars had undergone chemotherapy themselves. It really was an emotional moment."

It’s understandable why Lee Arnold, general manager of Peterborough’s Motorpoint, is grinning from ear to ear – the branch is doing so well it’s undergoing a huge expansion.

The annual Pink Car Rally was an initiative created by Sali, to raise awareness of, and funds for, the Little Princess Trust charity, which gives real-hair wigs to children who lose their own hair, primarily through cancer treatments. The participants are collectively known as the Pinkies and it looks like they’ve raised over £16,000 this time.

You can’t move for cars on the Fengate site – there must’ve been around a thousand when I dropped by to see how work was coming on with the new canopy, which is coming along nicely.

Apparently there are around 9,914 pink cars on UK roads, with 4,400 being registered last year alone! The Pink Car Rally Facebook page

No need to don your sheepskin coat when you want to check out some wheels this winter as you’ll be able to view around 200 extra cars under this new floodlit extension. And you won’t be hanging about for advice on your new wheels either as they’ve taken on four new sales people and two admin staff.

We all know Jordan is a fan of pink cars and has arguably ruined some prize specimens by having them painted in her favourite colour. For me there’s only ever been one proper pink car and that’s a pink Cadillac. Elvis owned one in the late 1950s and Cadillacs were still being manufactured in pink into the early 1960s when the model’s shape changed to reflect long tail fins, which depicted cars of that decade. So here’s the deal, if someone can loan me a pink Cadillac then I’ll gladly cruise the Pink Car Rally next year… www.pink-car-rally.com www.facebook.com/PinkCarRally

MARMALADE TOP INSURANCE FOR INNOVATION Young driver insurance provider Marmalade has won the ‘innovation’ title at the prestigious UK Broker Awards. The Peterborough-based company beat other contenders to the top title with its groundbreaking insurance products for young drivers.

It’s good to hear business is definitely looking up in the motoring sector and Lee tells me they’ve also extended their opening hours until 7pm each night to cope with demand and offer us more flexibility. So no need to brave the car buying masses on the weekend, just pop round after work and take your choice from Motorpoint’s new and low mileage nearly new range. I was hoping to have one last flirt with the red Audi A5 convertible Lee lent me last month but he’s only gone and sold it! It went to an excited owner just after we went to press. Ah well. How about wheeling me out an Abarth 595 for my next review then Lee?

has more than 3,000 'likes' from 20 countries. The range of makes, models and shades of pink cars on the road is fascinating and the 2013 rally saw several new pink participants, including 'Pica', a Kia Picanto and 'Candy', a Hyundai I10 who was sporting a fetching matt pink wrap.

Impressed with Marmalade, judges described the company as ‘a forward thinker, providing best solutions to a specified niche’.

From left to right: The host for the evening, comedian Stephan K Amos, Crispin Moger, MD at Marmalade and the sponsor of the Innovation Award, Paul Singh, Group CEO, Smart Witness.

Crispin Moger, managing director of Marmalade said – “We are very proud to have won this national award and to yet again receive recognition for our work within the young driver sector.”

Honda Earns What Car? Reader Award The readers of whatcar.com have cast their votes in the annual 'Reader Award' placing Honda as the Most Trusted Car Manufacturer in the 2013 What Car? Honda climbed the table to become the most trustworthy manufacturer to buy a used car from, thanks to great service, enjoyable customer experience, quality of the cars, the contents of approved Honda packages and overall value for money. This trophy is another in a long list of recent successes for Honda, having already taken the most reliable manufacturer title for the eighth consecutive year in the 2013 What Car & Warranty Direct Survey, with the Civic, Jazz, Accord and HR-V all ranked highly in their respected classes. The company offers three bespoke products for 17-24 year-olds – learner insurance, allowing provisional licence holders to get extra learning in their parents’ car; telematics-based cover – a black box which rewards good driving with lower premiums; and a car and insurance purchase scheme for new and nearly new vehicles. “Learning to drive is a rite of passage for all young people if they want it. But traditionally, this age group has been a challenge to the motor insurance industry. Our products have been created with both safety and cost-effectiveness in mind and they are proving a popular solution for more and more young drivers and their families,” Crispin added.

It was decided by the magazine’s editorial team and an online poll of more than 100,000 topgear.com readers. The top ten reads like this: 1. Bugatti Veyron (2005) 2. VW Golf GTI (2005) 3. Rolls-Royce Phantom (2003) 4. Ferrari 458 (2009) 5. Porsche Boxster (1996) 6. BMW 320d (1999) 7. Ford Focus (1998) 8. Porsche 911 (1993) 9. Renault Clio Williams (1993) 10. Lexus LFA (2010)

I’m afraid I’m not overly impressed with the results of the poll, this – my top ten – is how it should have read. Strange, they’re all Italian… 1. Ferrari 458 Italia 2. Ferrari F355 Spider 3. HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

Craving ‘comfort food’? ESP’s nutritionist Karen Devine looks at how the stodge could be zapping your zest for life… On a general note, gluten is a very sticky (I used to use it as glue as a kid) hard to digest protein and very prone to partial break down, it can cause bloating, belching, gas and much more as outlined above. The other problem with the gluten protein is it acts like an opiate type drug, in that you crave it, it makes you feel good when you eat it and when you remove it for a time the cravings get worse. Going gluten free has never been easier than it is today, firstly there are some very nutritious grains or seed type grains such as quinoa, millet, amaranth, teff, rice, not forgetting a call for more veggies in our diet which can give us our carbohydrates and deliver more nutrients, enzymes and fibre. In fact I believe that even if you have no reactions to gluten or any health issues it is always good to have a wider, healthier variety of foods than the same foods just in difference disguises every day!

A

s we begin to tuck ourselves away for the winter months you may find yourself tucking into more stodge to keep your energy up.

Root vegetables are our welcomed seasonal starchy veggies which are designed to give us more energy and heat during those winter months. However, many people tend to reach for more refined carbohydrates from bread, bagels, rolls, crumpets, Paninis, pasta, pizza etc during the winter months as we ditch the salad or high water content vegetables. Not only have these foods become dominant in our diet they may also be responsible for a myriad of health issues from weight gain to diabetes, inflammation, gut disorders and more as well as causing us energy slumps along with strong cravings for them. What these foods have in common is they all contain a protein which can play havoc with health, that protein is called Gluten. Gluten protein is found in grains such as wheat, spelt, kamut, barley, rye and is also found in some oats due to cross-contamination. You will find it in sauces,

beers, sweets and many more places if you start to look for it. There is a known disease called Coeliac disease which you may have heard of, it’s more commonly looked for when a person has specific digestive symptoms. Coeliac disease is an immune sensitivity to gluten, it is the ‘end’ stage of a gluten sensitivity which has generally been present for many years. The treatment is total exclusion from gluten foods. I’ve been studying and learning about the effects of gluten on health for many years and an interesting new field of research is emerging which suggests that you don’t have to have Coeliac disease to be ‘gluten sensitive’ and that there are an increasing number of other diseases and symptoms that may have gluten protein reactions at the root, those are autoimmune diseases as well as neurological symptoms and more. You may think you have to have digestive symptoms to be gluten sensitive however this may appear to be a false flag as there are numerous peptides in the gluten protein that can trigger antibodies to gluten which may then affect different organs/glands such as the thyroid for example, or even joints!

Using gluten free bread, cakes, biscuits and other manufactured products should be a treat as these are full of chemicals, salt, sugars, fats and the like – hardly a natural food and not advised day to day. You may like the gluten free rice pastas which generally just contain what is says on the packet. An issue that can happen for those on a gluten free diet who still experience symptoms is that they’re not 100% gluten free and they may be allowing even the smallest trace in their diet or they have cross linking reactions. This means that the body reacts to some foods thinking they are gluten, this would need to be tested for. This type of testing will soon be available in the UK I am pleased to say! If you do experience any digestive issues or health issues, always talk with your GP for advice before self-diagnosing or suddenly changing your diet or that of your family! Breast CanCer awareness Month As most of you are probably aware by now, October is breast cancer awareness month where all the major breast cancer charities increase awareness and raise money to help find a cure for the disease. There are a number of things that can affect your risk of breast cancer which have been identified by researchers... Hormonal factors – there are some hormonal factors that increase risk such as starting periods early and having the menopause late as well as taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or the contraceptive pill.

This brand new beauty and wellbeing suite has just been launched at the Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre. Having been open for a month now, the wide range of treatments including manicures, massage and hair removal (available for both men and women!) are already proving popular. The suite uses one of my all time favourite skincare ranges, Dermalogica, for all its skincare treatments, which is a good enough reason for me to want to pop along for some TLC. The suite also offers exclusive 3D Lipo treatments, a non invasive alternative to liposuction which can help you tighten those troublesome areas. Natalie, their Head Beauty Therapist, kindly told us some of her top beauty tips:• When cleansing your face, always do a double cleanse to ensure complete removal of all make-up, dirt and grime from the day. Cleanse right up into the hair line, eyebrows, behind the ears and down on to the neck and chest. • When shaping the nail’s free edge, use a glass file, and file from sides to centre to avoid too much trauma to the nail. Never use a see-saw action straight across the nail. • When choosing a foundation, always test on your neck, as this is where your skin has the most even tone and reflects your true skin colour. Give them a call to book in your treatment and discover more of Natalie’s beauty do’s and don’ts on 07920 160792, or email radiance@vivacitypeterborough.com

Lifestyle and past medical treatment – alcohol intake, body weight and night shift work can all increase your risk. Some types of medical treatment can also affect breast cancer risk such as blood pressure medicines or exposure to radiation.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK with (according to Cancer Research UK) more than 47,800 women and 300 men being diagnosed with the disease each year. Cancer Research UK is a major funder of breast cancer research in the UK with their work covering all aspects of the disease, from its causes through to psychological effects and treatment. As always, many well known brands have launched special Limited Edition breast cancer awareness products and gifts and that includes the fabulous Bobbi Brown who’ve brought out the French Pink Set, £35rrp. This gorgeous set offers a Pink Ribbon Embossed French Pink Blush & Mini Face Blender Blush, perfect for taking you from pretty to pretty powerful. Apply the blush to the apples of your cheeks for a soft, fresh wash of colour. With £5 from every sale in the UK being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation you can feel good about looking good. Avon and ghd have also got your beauty needs covered during the campaign so make sure you shop with a conscience and shop pink this October. Make your life – and someone else’s – more beautiful with Avon Pro Viva Pink Nail Varnish, £4 or really spoil yourself with ghd V Pink Diamond Styler with matching pink paddle brush, £135. A minimum of 10% will be donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s life saving work.

Breast cancer genes – it is possible to be born with a gene fault that increases the risk of breast cancer. It doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily get cancer, but it does mean you’re more likely to develop it than the average person. There are also lots of things that you can do to help reduce your risks:•

Being physically active and maintaining a healthy body weight

Breastfeeding – especially if you have children when you’re younger

Eating a diet high in dairy products, fibre and fruit may also reduce your risk

Due to the high level of research that’s carried out in the UK, men and women’s chances of surviving breast cancer are growing and growing and it’s thanks to the money raised and support given by people like you that allows scientists and doctors to do so. So please, please play your part this Breast Cancer Awareness Month and give to the charities that give life back to thousands of people throughout the UK each and every year.

Be a QUItter thIs oCtoBer No one likes a quitter except in October when the Stoptober campaign is underway encouraging people like you to give up smoking for good. Last year saw 160,000 people complete the 28 day challenge and was a huge success but despite this there’s still nearly 24% of Peterborough’s population who smoke and it remains the nation’s biggest killer with half of long-term smokers dying prematurely from a smoking disease. This year will see more stop smoking support splashed across the city than ever with a Stoptober campervan visiting various locations throughout Peterborough where there will be specialist smoking advisors on hand to help, support and encourage you with free advice and stop-smoking plans. If you stop smoking for 28 days, you’re 5 times more likely to stay smokefree and Stoptober’s goal is to help you make this happen. If you stop smoking this Stoptober and don’t smoke again you could gain an extra 7 days of life, every 28 days for the rest of your life!! That’s an extra week every month that you’re adding to your life just by kicking the habit. Not only will you experience a whole host of health benefits but your purse or wallet will love you too and you could save around £150 a month. So, if you wish to give it a go this Stoptober your first step is to contact your local Live Healthy Smokefree service on, freephone 0800 376 56 55. To order a free pack full of tips and advice to help you through your 28 day quit journey and download a 28 day support app for your phone, visit www.smokefree.nhs.uk/stoptober. Don’t let fags burn a hole in your pockets any longer.... do your bit and quit, quit, quit!

CH CH CHANGES… It happens every year; summer slowly disappears and cooler weather creeps its way in ready for autumn. Many of us embrace the change as it comes as a much needed relief from the hot, sticky weather but beware, the dry, cool air can wreak havoc causing dry, flaky skin, chapped lips and skin irritations. So remember that with a change in weather should come a change in your skin care routine. Proper care can mean the difference between healthy or uncomfortable skin. So, don’t let skin issues dampen your spirits this season – follow these vital skin care tips for happy, healthy skin all autumn… Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise… Lack of moisture in the air causes dryness in the skin so it’s vital to moisturise every single day and not just in the morning but at night before you go to bed too. Even those of you with oily skin need to moisturise. Not only will it help you to avoid itchy, irritated skin but it keeps a check on aging problems such as wrinkles, fine lines and dull skin. As well as your face, don’t forget to moisturise the rest of your body too; this is just as susceptible to the cold weather no matter how much you cover up with coats and jumpers. For the face my favourite moisturiser is Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel as it’s oil free and easily absorbed into my skin. For the body try Vaseline's Intensive Care Cocoa Butter Deep Conditioning Body Lotion – it smells lovely and comes at a bargain price. The best way of hydrating your skin though is from within by drinking plenty of water! If I could give you one piece of advice, sunscreen would be it… Just because you’re no longer lying on the beach and the sun isn’t shining so brightly it doesn’t mean you’re safe from the sun’s rays. They still penetrate through the clouds and sunscreen is just as important. Apply and reapply it liberally to avoid damage and sun spots on face, hands, arms etc. Remember, your sunscreen lotion must have at least SPF 15 in order to avoid harmful effects but I’d recommend a factor 30 for the best results. Try Image tinted moisturiser with SPF 30 available from My Body Essentials in Peterborough to give you a healthy glow whilst protecting your skin from the elements. Don’t forget other body parts… Just keeping your face looking radiant isn’t enough. Dry hands and feet look ugly especially after being hidden away in boots and gloves all season. Invest in a good hand lotion and reapply throughout the day and apply foot cream before bed at night. Try wearing a pair of socks in bed to keep in all that much needed moisture. And if your feet really need some TLC why not treat yourself to a Scholl Express Pedi to remove unwanted hard skin quickly and effortlessly.

Lips often come in for a lot of stick during the colder months and if you don't have a lip balm in every coat pocket, you're in for a nasty outdoor experience. Chapped lips are no one's idea of fun and can leave you feeling sore and uncomfortable. An easy remedy is Vaseline’s New Paint The Town Lip Therapy. This limited edition lip tint not only soothes and cares for your lips but will also add a pretty, subtle splash of colour (red) to your pucker, to brighten up those bleak autumn days. And remember DO NOT LICK YOUR LIPS; this only makes things worse! Say goodbye to the blow dry… Sadly the hairdryer is not your friend in autumn and winter. Hot air not only dries out your scalp which can lead to dandruff but can irritate your skin as well. Why not try the tousled look or wavy style this season and give the hairdryer a miss.

Café with

culture After a brilliant summer opening the team at Café Clarkes is looking ahead to a new season. You don’t have to have a formal meal, you can pop in for light snacks or just tea and cake during the day and when the weather allows there is alfresco dining. Prices sit around the £12 – £15 mark for a main meal and at lunchtimes you can enjoy two courses for £12.50. They have a specialist pastry chef so the desserts are amazing as well.

This new dining venue at the Key Theatre has a bistro feel and offers more informal dining in a modern, minimalist setting. The décor incorporates plenty of natural tones and you’ll find delicious, fresh, local and seasonal produce on the menu. It’s brought to you by the team behind the successful Banyan Tree restaurant and Clarke’s restaurant in the city. Owner Dinesh Odedra says – “Sam, one of the chefs from Clarkes has moved over to Café Clarkes and aims to introduce people to traditional British food such as Sausage & Mash, and Fish and chips but served with a modern twist using top quality locally sourced ingredients. This has enabled her to offer food that is of an exceptional standard at a reasonable price. An emphasis has also been placed on catering for vegetarians who are now able to select from their own menu.”

VESUVIO There’s a brand new look at Vesuvio in Whittlesey but the same great quality food and wonderful Italian hospitality. Our Man About Town Pep Cipriano joined owners Maria and Peppe on one of their famous theme nights and couldn’t say enough good things about the food, service and atmosphere. Since then this popular eatery has undergone a facelift with wonderful new interior design by Simon ParrBlack (07789 885825). “It was a really fun project and we’ve had some great customer feedback which is what you dream of,” Simon told ESP. “I’ve gone for a more contemporary feel with neutral Simon

colours and used pendant lighting to create a more intimate feel in the evenings. It’s unique for the area and everyone seems delighted with the facelift.”

“It’s unique for the area and everyone seems delighted with the facelift.”

The changes also include photos by photographer Chris Brudenell and a whole wall of fantastic paintings by Whittlesey artist Jan Atkin who we’re pleased to hear takes commissions (07738 226998). A raft of her work, featuring everything from landscapes to birds, is available to view inside Vesuvio on rotation, but if you’ve been before you may recall her fantastic images of Italy.

Vesuvio pride themselves on serving up quality Italian food with delicious dishes and homemade desserts. Tuesday is pizza night with a pizza and a drink deal for just £10 or there are drink and steak deals on Wednesday again for just £10. Thursday it’s wine night when you can order a bottle of special house red, white or rosé for just £6.99 rather than the usual £9.99 and you can even buy gift vouchers.

Maria from Vesuvio told ESP she’s delighted with the new look – “The restaurant has a fantastic fresh feel to it now and we urge diners to come and take a look at the transformation!”

Pop by soon to take a look – it’s well worth heading out of town for.

So Stamfordians, are you ready to be a legend?

Through both his lauded work fronting the Commotions and his highly respected solo material, Lloyd Cole has established himself as one of the most articulate and acute songwriters of the post-punk era. Cole formed the Commotions in 1982 going on to storm the UK charts with a string of well-written art-pop hits such as Perfect Skin, Forest Fire, Brand New Friend and of course Lost Weekend. Tickets are £20 on 01780 766455.

THE ELO EXPERIENCE – MR BLUE SKY Be prepared to have your mind blown 70's style! On Saturday October 5 the ELO Experience will be coming to the Stamford Corn Exchange for a night of symphonic rock! This amazing seven piece tribute will recreate all of ELO’s greatest hits including the tracks Telephone Line, Wild West Hero and of course their most famous track, Mr Blue Sky. CELEBRATE LITERATURE @ BURGHLEY’S FLOWER FESTIVAL The annual Burghley Flower Festival is returning this year running from Saturday October 5 to Sunday October 13 and this year the theme is 'Books in Bloom' with the festival celebrating the best of classic literature including the 200 year anniversary of Pride and Prejudice! During the festival Burghley’s state rooms are transformed with beautiful floral displays created by local flower societies, offering a new perspective on England's greatest Elizabethan House. Each room will inspire the floral arrangement with societies taking their inspiration from a piece of classic literature in addition to the painted ceilings, seventeenth century art or the original purpose of a room. The flower festival is accessible at no extra charge to the standard admission rate. For more info on the event and on ticket prices call the house on 01780 752451 or visit www.burghley.co.uk.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Keith says...

Talking of the Beer Festival, a couple of years ago was the first time I saw the League of Mentalmen. They only make rare appearances in this area so I made my way down to The Dragon in Werrington recently to see their show. And it is a show because The Mentalmen provide huge entertainment with a large variety of popular songs from artists like Andy Williams, Boyzone and Jessie J mixed with some classic rock numbers. The difference is they distort them by playing them in a racy punk style. This means that it’s not easy to recognise the song from the melody, so you not only have the pleasure of their exciting performance, but the added bonus of a quiz… spot the lyrics before someone else does. Watching the Mentalmen is certainly a unique experience and they draw a huge following at all

I’d like to congratulate all of those involved in the organisation and running of The Peterborough Beer Festival. Whatever the weather and despite huge crowds that the rest of the country would admire, the whole event seems to run very smoothly and the atmosphere is infectiously happy – there never seems to be any trouble. The other major bonus is the music, and this year the organisers seemed to bring us more local bands. I think this worked. I saw a great gig on Thursday night from the very talented Children of The Revolution and on Friday I saw Hooker give, for me, their best performance ever. Both bands revelled in the giant marquee and the very supportive audience that the Beer Festival brings.

MENTAL NIGHT @ THE DRAGON their gigs. The evening turns into a giant singsong. During the evening I was talking to a well respected local guitarist, who was experiencing them for the first time. After a few numbers which saw them distort some well known classics to rapturous applause, he turned to me and ironically said – “I think I’ve been wasting my time all these ******* years !” Not really Dave… there’s room for ALL talent. If you’ve never seen them, landlord Stuart Simmonds tells me that the Mentalmen are booked to reappear at the Dragon on December 21. Great start to Christmas, and the mind boggles as to what songs The League of Mentalmen will perform at that time of year!

ONE BLOKE ONE MANDOLIN @ IRON HORSE RANCH The biker friendly restaurant in Deeping has something a little different for the area this month with a rare performance by Stevie – described as ‘the hardest working musician on the biker circuit’. If you’re a fan of alternative country, folk and Americana don’t miss him! Catch this hardcore, bar stool troubadour on Friday October 25 at the Iron Horse Ranch House in Market Gate, Market Deeping at 8pm. For more, visit www.myspace.com/stevieoneblokeonemandolin

THIN LIZZY DEDICATION NIGHT RETURNS

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Peterborough's annual tribute show in memory of former Irish rock legend Phil Lynott who suffered an untimely death at just 36.

whole new generation of rock fans old and new with the surviving members of Thin Lizzy still touring now fronted by Belfast rocker, former lead singer of The Almighty, Ricky Warrick.

become a major tourist attraction in Dublin city centre and joins an exclusive top 10 of statues around the world in memory of rock stars including Freddie Mercury and Elvis Presley.

Gone but definitely not forgotten as his music lives on for a

However the soul of the band was lost with the passing of Phil, and local promoter Terry Narraine brings the 10th year of ‘Dedication’ to The Royal British Legion in Yaxley on Saturday October 19.

This year’s show on paper holds no punches and may be the best yet as Dedication has a very strong line up featuring from Peterborough, The Rocket Dogs, The Tunnel and Children of The Revolution. Whilst from Leicestershire headline band Warrior will be playing a full Thin Lizzy set.

Past ‘Dedications’ have been honoured by an appearance by Phil Lynott's mother, and Philomena Lynott who’s 83 will be making the trip from Dublin as special guest and will be in attendance again this year. The show raises funds for The Roisin Dubh Trust, which was set up in memory of Philip Lynott and funds raised over the years have helped underprivileged children in Ireland and helped support mothers who’ve lost their children at an early age. A proportion of the funds that we have raised in Peterborough helped towards the statue of Phil Lynott, which has now

There’ll be a raffle of Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy memorabilia with the main raffle prize to be signed by Philomena Lynott on the night. Having met Phil early in his career (see last month’s ESP) and also his mother at a number of Dedication events, I’ll be there as the city remembers a true rock icon. You can pay on the night at the Royal British Legion, but as ticket sales are going very well, you can reserve yours by phoning Terry Narraine on 07796 250071.
