This hilarious and upbeat musical is on restricted release to only a handful of amateur musical societies and as a result of Westwood’s recent successful productions, they were triumphant in securing the show, which is to be performed at the Key Theatre. HOW MATT’S KEY’D UP FOR THE KEY!

Sharna Ridge

As award-winning big band singer Matthew Ford prepares to make his third appearance at Peterborough’s Key Theatre with his brand new show the Kings of Cool, on Friday October 10, memories of his very first performance at the Key with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra come flooding back.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS IN STAMFORD

It was the success of his performance at The Key that led to Matt being asked to perform with the famous Syd Lawrence Orchestra over the next 5 years, and which acted as a springboard for his further success with most of the UK’s top big bands.

Travel back to Victorian England with Great Expectations performed by the London Contemporary Theatre. Thanks to the mind of the great Charles Dickens, you can follow Pip as he encounters unique characters like Miss Havisham set to live music that makes this literary classic accessible to ages 10 and up. The show starts at 7.30pm on October 15 at Stamford Arts Centre. Tickets are £12 (concessions £10) or £8.50 for students and groups. For more info visit www.stamfordartscentre.com or call the box office on 01780 763203. Sharna Ridge

“It was in 2000, and not only was it my first gig at The Key Theatre, it was my first ever show performing with the Syd Lawrence,” recalls Matt. “Given that the Orchestra is widely regarded as a ‘National Treasure’, the pressure was on! I remember being utterly terrified! There are still people who come to me at the Key and tell me they remember that first gig. These people still support me whenever I appear at the venue.” Matt will also start his third major tour with the John Wilson Orchestra in November, playing some of the largest venues in the UK, including the Albert Hall. For fans of cool swinging standards, The Great American Songbook, and the music of the Rat Pack, the Kings of Cool is a must-see, featuring songs made famous by Sinatra, Buble, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Andy Williams and many more. Box office: 01733 207239.

With Halloween approaching, ESP’s Editor challenged Mikey Clarke to spend a night in Peterborough’s most haunted building... and he’s spotted around once a year. He was last seen around this time last year by one of our volunteers. People should keep a look out because we’re due another appearance soon.” Great, just what I wanted to hear five minutes before being left alone! Stuart continued – “Other ghosts include a lady in white, a young girl – who is seen and heard, a monk, an unidentified woman on the staircase and a dark hooded figure in the cellar. People often tell me about their ghostly experiences. The ones that are most fascinating are the ones that I’ve heard before. When numerous people report seeing the same thing in the same area of the building, that can’t just be a coincidence.”

T

he Peterborough Museum is regarded as the most haunted location in Peterborough. I remember watching the television episode of Most Haunted based at the local landmark. During the episode, I recall the moment when the heavy cellar door slammed shut with no obvious explanation. This is the scene that stuck in my head when my Editor challenged me to spend an evening in the building. Before settling in for the night, I grabbed a few words with the Events and Programme Manager for Vivacity Culture and Leisure, Stuart Orme. Stuart isn’t surprised by the Museum being branded the most haunted venue in the city. “It’s one of the city’s most historic buildings,” he said. “It goes right back to 1536 – and in that time has been a private home, a hospital, and the museum you know it as today. So I guess if anywhere in Peterborough is going to be haunted, it’s going to be here.

He’s even seen and heard things himself. “My last paranormal experience actually happened about two weeks ago,” Stuart said. “I was working in the building alone and I heard somebody calling. I know for a fact that the voice had not come from outside. It was too clear and too close, but like I said – I was alone. Something more extreme happened last year. It was around 10pm and I was working late with two colleagues. I happened to be looking out towards what is currently our temporary exhibition gallery and I saw a woman in Victorian clothing. I could see her so clearly… she was about 40 years old and had her hair tied back into a bun. The front door was locked and there was absolutely nobody else in the building except me and my colleagues.”

“We’ve had ghost sightings reported here for over 100 years. The earliest reported ghost sighting in this building was in 1884. So, even back in the Victorian times, people were claiming that this building was haunted.”

Photos: Emma Bothamley

Stuart has been based at the Museum for many years, and knows the building better than anybody else I’ve met. I asked him how likely it was that I’d see a ghost during my stay. He explained, “It’s very possible. After all, we have eight ghosts that are regularly seen. The most popular ghost is probably Sgt Thomas Hunter – ‘The Lonely Anzac’. He was an Australian Soldier who fought during the First World War. He was bought to this building for hospital treatment. He died here and was even buried in Peterborough – in fact, people still put poppies on his gravestone. It is said that his ghost never left this building

I knew for a fact I wasn’t the first to spend a night at the museum. Stuart confirmed – “We’ve had numerous Ghost Hunters from the region, the country and even further afield spend a night here during the last 10 years. A lot of them have picked up some interesting activity in the

building. Some have picked up tape recordings of voices and movements have even been filmed. It’s fair to say that most investigators walk away convinced that there is paranormal activity taking place here.” During my time alone at night I have to admit that although I saw nothing, I certainly sensed that there was a presence lurking and that I wasn’t on my own. At one point there were even clicks and bangs coming from the room next to me. At this point I was too scared to move and spent the rest of my time sitting completely still.

‘Ghosts definitely roam this building.’ What was that noise I was hearing? According to Stuart the next day… it was the lift. Typical. He admitted to me – “Around 80-90% of most unusual activity has a logical reason behind it. If someone hears a weird noise I’ll be the first to say if it’s actually the heating pipes. But 10% of the unusual activity takes place can’t be explained by me or anyone I know. Ghosts definitely roam this building.” Thank goodness I never saw one myself. But maybe you will? The Halloween Ghost Walks are taking place October 28-31 at 7.30 & 8pm from the Peterborough Museum. It’s the perfect opportunity to hear more about the eerie secrets of Peterborough’s most haunted building and many other spooky locations around the city centre from a costumed guide. I attended the walk last year but Stuart assured me that I should book again. “The Ghost Walks are never the same walk twice,” he said. “We have so many stories to tell, which vary depending on the type of audience we’re talking to. We have Ghost Walks that happen throughout the year, but the Halloween ones definitely stand out. Not only is everyone in the spooky spirit but we often have costumed ghosts on route. They won’t jump out at you or touch you – but having them there really adds something to the stories.” Early booking is advised. NIGHT SCENE MAKEOVERS AND REFURBS!

Now you look the part compared to summer when everyone in town looks like they’re dressed for a barbecue. I’m pleased to see a couple of venues have been making an effort with their appearance too. After the much anticipated refurbishment this summer, Edwards is back with a plush new look that breathes life back into the old building with a sophisticated design and darker colour palette. The venue celebrated the launch of its refurbishment by announcing a return to some of its popular nights, bringing back the best vibes to Peterborough. It’s great to see Edwards still going strong after all these years and even better to learn of their new frozen daiquiris range. Long serving manager Cem Ozkan told ESP: “Edwards’ stylish and innovative new look has really brought the venue back up to speed. I’m delighted with the outcome and can’t wait for everyone to come and experience what the new look venue has to offer.”

It’s change across the road at Monroe’s Bar and Restaurant too. The trendy venue has new owners, new management and new staff – and brings a fresh and vibrant feel to Peterborough city centre. New chef Michela Herodotou has introduced a fresh and tasty steak house style menu, which means American style food with a Monroe’s twist. Popular house DJ Miss Zoe Roberts is still a resident there and that’s good news. New General Manager Richard Forrest told ESP: “Monroe’s is the perfect place to enjoy great food and quality wine followed by dancing in our bar to some of the very best sounds in house music.” Both venues have invested in the night scene to keep it fresh and up-to-date. Now it’s time for us to show how we appreciate that investment. Mine’s a medium rare sirloin followed by my Groove Is In The Heart request please Zoe and a frozen banana Daiquiri (or two) to finish in Edwards.

I always love this time of year when there’s a slight chill in the air and the nights begin to draw in. This means sticking on some autumn threads and when you’re on a night out in the city centre, you actually look like you’ve made an effort with a crisp shirt, fitted tweed jacket, dark jeans and a pair of brogues.

CLUBS PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR SUE RYDER Staying on the club scene, it’s great to see venues supporting the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal by hosting special one-off events to raise cash. Halo has played host to a 1980s disco, Attica was the venue for a Burlesque Night and New York New York was transformed into a carnival with dancers, party games, balloons and sweets all on the go. The next fundraiser is a Halloween themed Masquerade Ball at Liquid Nightclub on Monday October 20. Manager of the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall shop in Queensgate, Kellie Preston has been responsible for these events and told ESP: “We’ve been thrilled with the support nightclubs have given to our

appeal by letting us use their space to put on fundraising events. “So far the events have brought in hundreds of pounds towards the appeal to raise £6 million to build a new hospice in Peterborough. With on-going support pledged by so many club and bar managers in the city we’re hopeful we can keep adding to that total over the coming months.” For info about Thorpe Hall, the £6 million appeal and future events visit www.thorpehall.org

HITMAN HEARNS FOLLOWS KNOCKOUT DURAN

SPOTTED: TONY HADLEY IN THE CUCKOO! ESP’s former music contributor Andy Slater is obviously missing the limelight and couldn’t wait to tell me about his chat at a bar with Spandau Ballet’s lead singer Tony Hadley. You wouldn’t expect to see an 80’s pop icon pulling a pint behind a Peterborough pub bar but Tony made his annual visit to The Cuckoo in Alwalton (which seems to have become his ‘local’ ahead of his annual charity golf day in the city) and pulled himself a pint of his very own real ale, Hadley’s Blonde. The singer hosts an annual celebrity golf event in aid of Action Medical Research which sees him gather up some celebrity mates and bring them over to the city. Manager of The Cuckoo, Luke Richardson told me: “Tony pops in every year and he’s always friendly and very courteous – you’d just think he was a regular chap. He likes to chat about food, beer and wine and it’s always a pleasure.” Andy confirmed that Tony was a “smashing guy” and was chatting away about the band’s new single, part of the promotion for their new film Soul Boys of the Western World which was shown at Cannes and is released this month. The new single ‘This is the Love’ recreates their original sound from back in the early 80’s when the band hit the big time. Why do I have visions of Andy wearing a Frankie Says Relax t-shirt tucked into a pair of tight shorts like the ones George Michael wore in Wham’s Club Tropicana video?

GET READY FOR WINTER AT BALDERSTON It's coming up to that time of year when fair weather riders like me will be parking the bike up for a few months while winter swings into town. This means preparing your bike for those chilly months, which will help ensure it's fit to ride again come spring. Aside from free winter advice, the boys (and couple of lovely girls) at Man About Town sponsors Balderston are offering a bunch of deals from November 1. • Free engine oil with a service on bikes up to 2010 registration • Up to 15% discount on a service on bikes post 2010 registration • Free collection and delivery for service work • Free brake overhaul • Anti-corrosion prep treatment for £60 • Free accessory fitting

A sell-out crowd turned out to see one of my favourite boxers of all time – Roberto Duran – at The Solstice last month and thanks to promoter Kevin Sanders fight fans are in for another treat when Thomas ‘The Hitman’ Hearns comes to town. Hearns will be the star attraction on Friday November 14 and tickets to see this boxing legend are now on sale. The Hitman was the first boxer to win a world title at five weight divisions and the first man to knockout Roberto Duran. Unsurprisingly the latter didn’t go into too much detail about that fateful night but what Duran did tell us is that if he could fight anyone again it would be Hearns (and Leornard) because they ‘owed’ him. Duran is the best boxer after dinner speaker I’ve seen. He was open and honest about his career and still came across like someone you wouldn’t want to mess with!

• Free tyre fitting For terms and conditions give Balderston a call on 01733 565470. My only word of warning is please make sure the dodgylooking grease monkey in this photo isn't let lose on your bike. Apparently he's on work experience and has spent most of his first week in the workshop looking for a left handed spanner and some tartan paint at the request of his chief mechanic.

His story is one of having to fight to give his mother and family a better life. His goal of wanting to buy a house for his mum was quickly achieved but Duran went on to box in five decades and is a true icon of the ring.

He fought like a warrior and was a durable opponent that would get stronger the more you made him angry. ‘Hands of stone’ as he was known was the first man to beat Sugar Ray Leonard and he’s also the only boxer I’ve known to have punched a horse for a bottle of whiskey and $20! Today he owns a restaurant in his native Panama and still trains regularly to keep trim and looking much younger than his 63 years. Duran was never afraid of giving you his opinion and I’m pleased to say nothing’s changed. Asked if in his day he could beat Floyd Mayweather, he responded: “No problem. Floyd learned from me but I’m the more intelligent fighter.” Needless to say nobody challenged him on that one! Duran was a dream speaker and he’s as enthusiastic and passionate about boxing today as he was when he was throwing punches back in the day. Something tells me Hearns will also have just as much to say and I can’t wait. Don’t miss this one. For tickets call: 07872 601467.

Fresh ingredients

and a fresh approach to Indian dining are taking the Banyan Tree into a new era…

Photos: Emma Bothamley

Since opening at the height of the recession and sticking their necks out on a labour of love, they have become part of a group of independents embracing Clarkes and Café Clarkes, combining the food skills of chef Lee Clarke with Dinesh’s vision.

A

s the options for dining out have expanded considerably in the city centre over the last few years, more people are eating out but several independent restaurants have provided the backbone to this culture change. The chains may have woken up to Peterborough but it’s independents like the Banyan Tree on Westgate that have continued to provide excellent food and service throughout a harsh recession.

Owner, Dinesh Odedra

Now there’s a change of pace and a new look at this eatery and owner Dinesh Odedra is excited about the future.

There’s been a change of décor at the Banyan Tree with the downstairs area harking back to 1970’s Mumbai reflecting a vibrant time of change when India embraced more western culture. Upstairs the feel is more 1940s and the last days of the Raj with family photos carefully sourced by Dinesh adorning the walls. It’s a real history lesson with some fascinating stories behind each image and a real sense of nostalgia. The two themes match Dinesh’s outlook of a go-ahead modern approach to their food with a menu bursting with authentic dishes.

16

www.espmag.co.uk

“We have been able to take our food forward, invest in new equipment and with Lee’s knowledge we have been able to extend our offering,” explains Dinesh. “We can now cater for corporate functions and offer Indian food as part of that too. It’s been a huge benefit to both.”

Indian restaurants aren’t usually famed for their desserts but they’ve now introduced a new range. Homemade and delicious, it’s clear that the alliance with the chefs at Clarkes has added new skills and there’s a variety of classic Indian and European style dishes to tempt you.

Dinesh is fiercely proud of what they deliver and whilst he welcomes the arrival of more places to dine out he says chains will never compete with their individual hands on approach. “Our chefs design the menu and then it’s them who cook what’s on it – we don’t sell re-heated food in volume. We’re able to make sure quality isn’t compromised over simplicity – chains have to be more formulaic. “The chefs are awesome, they’re classically trained and know how to prepare food to a 5 star food hygiene standard – very few in the industry have that. “We use local suppliers for everything we can, everything is made by our team and freshly prepared. We even select the whole spices and then the chefs blend them.” The Banyan Tree has made its mark providing traditional cuisine rather than stereotypical Indian food but now they are going even more rustic – “We’ve been doing this for years but the celebrity chefs are only just catching up. We make regular visits to India to keep in touch with what’s happening and pick up even more niche dishes. The food is served in a more modern way, but is actually more traditional than ever.”

You’ll also find one of the widest ranges of draught beers, possibly the best of any independent in town, cocktails and great coffee. Never one to settle with things for long Dinesh continues to forge on – “We still want to achieve so much more. We want to improve the quality of our food even further with new techniques and get more out of the ingredients. “We have committed, passionate people working for us and that’s what makes the difference.” The Banyan Tree, 53 Westgate, Peterborough. BHS £60

BODY CONSCIOUS SHAPE UP IN THE NEW LOOKS WHATEVER YOUR SIZE There seems to be so many different trends this season, so ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly has picked the best of the bunch with tips on how to make them work for you, whatever your shape or size. 1. Coats. In this category you have lots of choice. No longer do you have to invest in a coat that will last you for years. This is your chance to have a number, depending on your mood and the occasion. Duster coats and oversize cardigans are a brilliant choice for those of you who want to hide your midriff or need something roomy to wear over a suit. Most have no fastening or collar so are easy to slip on. Look out for bright colours to cheer up the grey days. Orange, coral pink, cobalt blue, vivid purple and lime green means there is something to suit everyone. If you want to show off your waist, choose an elegant kimono or classic wrap style and belt them tightly. Trench coats can be found in classic camel or vivid scarlet for that 60's vibe. To be really fashionable, wear two coats together. Slip the top one over your shoulder so you’re extra warm and extra cool! 2. Tops. Shirts have replaced the more flexible tunic top, which can cause problems for the larger busted. Buttons can gape or additional fabric can be too voluminous. Wear under a sweater or with a cami beneath to keep out the

20

cold. Sweaters will always have a space in our wardrobe. The new ones tend to be shorter, as higher waistbands are making a comeback on both trousers and skirts, creating a neat line on the body. They can be thick, fabric wise so not always a great option for those who want to slim down their middle section. Chunkier knits, such as cable, can add a great deal of visual volume. There is a lot of softness and a lot of sparkle around. Mix and match these two to create a brand new way of wearing your clothes. Shiny fabrics and sequins are not just for night time dressing. 3. Skirts. Midi length is the one to watch. This new length can cover up a multitude of sins but if it cuts across the calf at the widest point it can give the impression of stumpy legs. Wear with shoes or ankle boots (rather than knee high) so some 'flesh' is on display. Watch also for the side split. This adds a sexy touch. Pleats are back, especially in shiny, silky fabrics. Worn with a sweater or a tailored jacket, this gives a completely fresh look to a traditional garment. Don't like? Then stick to good old trousers.

These will have a higher waistband than we have been seeing recently and a looser, slouchier fit in the leg. Great for most shapes, especially pear and hourglass, as they balance out the body. Apple shapes are better sticking to a slim fit. Pleats, in fine or sheer fabrics, have crept into culottes and all in one ‘jumpsuits’ too, so the silhouette is more ladylike and elegant than in previous seasons. 4. Shoes. High heels are no longer de rigeur. However, a mid block heel of 2-3 inches is absolutely fine. Burgundy and plum make a welcome change from black or brown. 5. Neutrals. For those of us that like to stick to plain colours, grey, navy and cocoa are the colours of choice. Softer than black, they are more flattering for many of us. Add a splash of a bright colour to liven up or wear 2 or 3 tonal shades, with slight variations together for the most up to date way of wearing these basics. Sue Donnelly www.suedonnelly.com

Hourglass Body Shape

FASHION

Curvy hourglass girls go in at the middle, often with a fuller bust and bottom to contrast with the smaller waist. You’re blessed with a very sexy shape so you need to learn not to drown it in too-baggy clothes but also not to be too overtly sexy either – unless that’s the look you’re going for!

BHS £35

We popped down to try out the body scanner at Queensgate’s Project Denim event designed to reveal your body shape and finally solve your denim dilemmas. It was all private and painless, you just stepped into a booth for the scan and were then discreetly provided with a body scan of your measurements to keep. The stylists then talked you through your body shape and advised what jeans to choose.

Wallis £45

FASHION M&S Collection

Lots of shoppers had booked in for a free scan and it certainly opened our eyes to trying some different stores we wouldn’t normally think of for buying jeans. It’s hoped the body scanner will make a return next year so watch this space and next time make sure you give it a go – it’s a real help! Here are Queensgate’s Project Denim stylist Lola Royle’s tips for buying the jeans to suit your shape…

Apple Body Shape If you are the Apple of someone’s eye then you’re pretty in proportion but tend to carry your weight around your mid section without a welldefined waist. You may also have fabulous legs and/or boobs so dressing is all about showing off those best bits and avoiding adding volume round your middle.

Miss Selfridge £45

Dorothy Perkins

Simple denim styles in classic boot cut, wide leg or flares are best. Stick to clean lines without any extras, and darker colour jeans work great.

Mid or high rise jeans are fabulous as they elongate your legs. They should lay flat on your belly. Jeans with wide waistbands are great for hourglass shaped women. Wide-legged, loose fitting, slightly tapered, boot-cut or straight leg styles are great.

Pear Shaped The pear shaped woman tends to carry her weight in the lower area of her body. These women tend to have small to medium busts and a well defined waist, whilst areas such as the hips, thighs, calves and bottom are relatively larger. Always wear darker shades of denim on the bottom. This way your legs receive that slimming effect and no attention will be drawn to your lower half. A flared leg creates a more flattering line for your whole body. Boot-cut is another flattering style. When you have a pear shaped body, you want to accentuate your curves and draw attention to your narrow waist. Boot-cut jeans successfully do this.

Rectangle Body shape Many would kill for this shape, there’s no main area you want to minimise so you can get away with more things than most. However, you may crave more curves – an illusion easily created with the right clothing. Skinny jeans are great for the ‘volume on top, slim bottom’ look. Just make sure they’re really tight. Mid to low-rise jeans are great, just be careful if you have a long torso. Baggy, flared or cargo jeans add volume on the bottom and are fabulous to combine with a slim top. Bags on your hips and bottom are terrific and you can wear as many embellishments as you like. Avoid jeans with big flares as they put your body out of balance. paparazzi extra Caught in the act? BEER GOGGLES… A LOOK BACK AT THIS YEAR’S BEER FEST. It was another great year down at the Embankment as the Peterborough Beer Festival helped bring summer to a close as we all piled down to the city’s biggest social. This is our first chance to illustrate what a good time you had so hopefully you can relive the good times with our photo spread – we expect it was all a bit of a blur afterwards! The organisers of the 37th event tell us up to 30,000 of you went along for the annual five day festival which was packed with 400+ real ales and some great live music. The ESP Lunchtime Quiz with Ian Gray put your brain power to the test each day and our reporter Mikey Clarke helped judge the champion beers with the Gold winner being a locally brewed ale, Bible Black by the Nene Valley Brewery in Oundle. We had a great time as always and judging by these photos by Mike Harris, our (sober) man behind the lens – so did you! View all our Paparazzi pictures on www.espmag.co.uk or our facebook page.

paparazzi Caught in the act? RAFTS AND REFURBS… We’ve had a busy few months out an about and so many pictures to squeeze in from some great events, it’s only now we can remind you of the summer fun you had down at Deepings Raft Race. Mike Harris captured the action down at this great event which raised thousands for charity and saw some amazing carfts take to the water. Fond summer memories… Meanwhile our nightlife photographer Mitch Brewster went along to cover the relaunch of Edwards bar on Broadway with it’s new décor after a big refurb and we have to say it’s looking pretty hot! Check it out on Man About Town on P. 14 – looking good guys! View all our Paparazzi pictures on www.espmag.co.uk or our facebook page.

Cheryl’s back in the X Factor hot seat and looking hot as ever... “I think Ed Sheeran’s definitely got the X Factor,” says Cheryl. “The guy is a superstar. He writes amazing lyrics. His collaborations are spot on. His videos are fun. He’s unexpected, he’s not commercially what you would think of. He’s somebody that I would die for if he arrived at The X Factor to audition.” So as the search for a new star accelerates with a fresh judging panel and the ever-popular Cheryl settling back into her seat nicely again – will they find a real talent? “I’m always looking for somebody fresh. I’m never looking for the next whoever; the next Justin Beiber, the next One Direction. I want somebody to come in that we don’t quite know if we get it or not. Something fresh that we haven’t got. “I hope this year we see somebody fresh and very different, and somebody that we can take around the world and say ‘this is a great ambassador for what we do’.” Having had what she describes as “enough time away to appreciate it and get really excited to find new talent again,” – Cheryl is back on the X Factor rollercoaster and as the show races on we’ve already had plenty of tears and disagreements but, she says that’s all part of the mix. “I think it would be uninteresting and not real if we didn’t disagree. Obviously it’s human nature and you feel different things for different people.” Much was made of her tiff with Simon Cowell after he ditched her from the American version of the show but after blowing up a dummy of him at an army base in Afghanistan and a few other pranks it looks like she’s largely got that out of her system! “I think Simon’s a bit like an annoying brother. We’re like brother and sister and he’s the annoying one,” she says. “Simon has his very own way of being very annoying. He knows which buttons to push and he’ll push them, and push them, and push them. But I play the long game. I’m waiting. Don’t worry about me, I’ll get my own back.”

We loved her teasing him with the water glass when he was desperate for the loo and deliberately dragging out her chat with the boy band to make him cross his legs even longer… this Geordie lass definitely has a wicked sense of humour when she needs to! In between her X Factor stints Cheryl fell in ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ and caused a tabloid stir when she revealed her marriage to Mr Fernandez-Versini and has returned to the charts herself with another hit single and a new album, Only Human, out soon. Cheryl rose to fame as a fifth of Girls Aloud, the most successful UK girlband of the 21st century as well as the most successful band to come out of a reality TV show. After coming together on Popstars: The Rivals, Girls Aloud went on to have four number one singles, five sell out arena tours and six platinum selling albums. It’s something that’s given Cheryl a distinct link between her and her fellow female judge, former Spice Girl, Mel B. “A lot of the time Mel says things and I think ‘that’s exactly how I would put it, that’s exactly how I feel.’ Not only about groups, just in general, I agree with a lot of the things she says and thinks. She has a very good way of putting things. She’s a bit more blunt than I am in her approach, which I love. But definitely when it comes to the girl groups we have the same answer about what it takes to be a girl group.” As ever everything from Cheryl’s hair to her latest frock gathers as many headlines as the show’s acts. So how much does she worry about what to wear? “When I first started X Factor it was never focused on what the judges wore, it was about the contestants. I try and remember that’s what it’s all about. It’s not about what clothes I’m wearing. Obviously I like to feel nice and wear nice clothes, I’m a girly girl, so when it comes to the live shows I like to wear the sparkly dresses. But mainly it’s about the contestants for me and if people enjoy my dress that’s nice.” The six chair challenge at Boot Camp is also a fresh challenge for her this year – “which is making me feel physically ill at the thought!” – Cheryl confesses. The judges wilI have to switch people around in chairs and lose some potentially good people. “The toughest thing about being an X Factor judge, is being the person to tell somebody you don’t think that they’re ready for their dream. That’s tough, that’s horrible. Judges’ houses, all that business, is tough.” The X Factor continues on ITV at 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays, see more on www.itv.com/xfactor and Cheryl will be releasing her new album, Only Human later this year.

THE BOOK OF LIFE

his career after several public meltdowns – and Logan Lerman’s (Percy Jackson) rookie newcomer Norman Ellison, as they attempt to overcome insurmountable odds, despite being completely outnumbered and outgunned.

Early projections indicated this reboot of the TMNT franchise would fail, but it has gone on to be the massive surprise hit of the summer in the States – notching more than $180m despite mixed reviews. This time Bay is on production duties, and he’s kissed and made-up with his Transformers star Megan Fox – who he had a heated public spat with after Revenge of the Fallen – as she plays the part of famous reporter April O’Neil. Shredder is again the villain of the piece as impressive computer-generated visuals bring the pizza-loving, ninja-trained turtles Leonardo (voiced by Johnny Knoxville), Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello, and their mentor Splinter, alive on the big screen.

Released: October 24

It tells the legend of conflicted hero Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna), who sets off on an epic quest through three magically mythical worlds in order to rescue his one true love Maria (Guardian of the Galaxy’s Zoe Saldana) – who is also being courted by Channing Tatum’s Joaquin – after the spirits bet on who will win her affections. Unfortunately the spirit Xibalba (Ron ‘Hellboy’ Perlman) doesn’t want to lose the bet and sends a snake to kill Manolo – which sends the young man on a journey where he must face his greatest fears. Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Cheech Marin and Danny ‘Machete’ Trejo all add their voice talents to this colourful offering.

DRACULA UNTOLD Released: October 3

DESTINY (XONE/PS4/360/PS3) Out now

The Desolation of Smaug’s British star Luke Evans tackles this origin story on the legend of Dracula. He stars as the title character in this dark fantasy actioner which offers a different take on Bram Stoker’s infamous mythological character – as this intends to be the first in a series of films to reboot Universal Studio’s Monsters franchise. Fellow Brit Dominic Cooper co-stars.

Destiny may not quite be the revolution that some may have been hoping for – but still evolves the first-person shooter in a generally spectacular fashion. This mechanically-sound RPG-shooter has unsurprisingly been heavily inspired by Halo (as it’s made by the series’ founders Bungie) – and mashes in a bit of Borderlands 2 and Mass Effect among others – but there’s something about Destiny that makes you carry on playing.

####

GONE GIRL Released: October 3

Whether it’s advancing your XP to above Level 20 – which really opens the game up further – playing with your buddies in a strong (if bare bones) co-op or competitive multiplayer, or just exploring the Moon, Venus or Mars, it really has that little something extra that draws you back in, as you play as your customised warrior against alien races. With a bounty of exploration and side quests, this could just be the tip of the iceberg, even though it’s admittedly hampered by its sometimes linear and repetitive approach – and lack of Fallout 3/Skyrim-esque open world landscapes.

Se7en director David Fincher helms this mystery-thriller, which is getting some great early buzz in critic circles. New Batman Ben Affleck stars as Nick Dunne, a man who becomes the focus of a media circus when his wife (Rosamund Pike) disappears – then sees the spotlight turned on him when it’s suspected he may not be innocent. Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry co-star.

As it stands Destiny is currently a ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ – but if you endeavour it could well become the master of some.

METRO REDUX (XONE/PS4/PC) Out now

It seems like there are quite a few games getting the enhanced treatment for next-gen consoles – but this is one package that benefits from the upgrade.

ANNABELLE Released: October 10 This spin-off of last year’s sleeper horror hit The Conjuring sees husband John (Ward Horton) bring home the seemingly perfect present for his expectant wife Mia (Annabelle Wallis) – a rare and beautiful vintage doll. But her delight with her new toy doesn’t last long when their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult – who violently attack the couple due to the malevolent evil within the doll.

####

If you’ve never ventured into the post-apocalyptic future that is the irradiated creature-infested Moscow Metro, then the two rebuilt versions of 2010’s Metro 2033 and last year’s Metro: Last Light are a joy to play in 60FPS. These shooter-adventures both have their flaws – with some of its distinctive eerie charm smoothed out for better or worse in some cases – but the Survival and Sentinel modes are still extremely compelling (if a touch easier), whether you’ve played these survival-horrors before or not.

MADDEN NFL 15 (PS4/XONE/PS3/360) Out now After 2013’s barely acceptable last-gen port for Playstation 4 and Xbox One – EA have made some sensational improvements to their American Football gaming franchise for this year’s offering.

THE MAZE RUNNER

With a dramatically overhauled defensive tackling system, a more refined physics engine, and better tactical play calling, this is arguably the finest iteration yet of Madden – and it looks absolutely gorgeous in next-gen.

Released: October 10 When Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys – including We’re the Millers star Will Poulter – he has no memory of the outside world, other than strange dreams about a mysterious organisation. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze, will he and his fellow ‘runners’ stand a chance of escape.

####

Despite a few lingering flaws that need to be ironed out, EA has ushered in a new era of NFL gaming – fittingly headlined by the burgeoning talent of cover-star and Seahawks’ cornerback Richard Sherman – and scores a terrific touchdown.

WARRIORS OROCHI 3: ULTIMATE (PS4/XONE) Out now

THE JUDGE

This ‘ultimate’ version of the popular beat ’em up gets improved visuals, brand new storyline and exclusive modes for next-gen consoles.

Released: October 17

Comprising of fighters from the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors series – as well as characters from the likes of SoulCalibur and Dead or Alive – battling hordes of enemies across battlefields with powerful new weaponry is a fun experience.

Being a multi-millionaire from his Iron Man excursions allows Robert Downey Jr the ability to pick and choose his roles – this time starring as big city lawyer Hank Palmer, who returns to his childhood home after the town’s judge and his father (Robert Duvall), is suspected of murder. The Bates Motel’s Vera Farmiga and Armageddon’s Billy Bob Thornton co-star.

####

It’s obviously aimed at more niche fighting audience, and particularly fans of the Dynasty Warriors games – but it’s about time newbies gave this a blast too.

THE GOLF CLUB (XONE/PS4/PC) Out now There’s a new contender to EA’s cast-iron PGA grip on golfing games teeing off – even though it may be a bit rough-round-the-edges.

SERENA

HB Studios’ new downloadable simulator may have a slightly unfinished feel, lack licensed players, and have weak presentation – but it offers an experience that will probably appeal to purists of the sport.

Released: October 24 After sizzling together in The Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence and nominee Bradley Cooper re-team once again for this Depression-era North Carolina-set drama. The future of George Pemberton’s (Cooper) timber empire becomes complicated when it is learned his independent-minded wife Serena (Lawrence) cannot bear children.

###

With more realistic stroke play, an in-depth course designer, and rewarding long-term play, this is well worth pitching to golfing fans – despite only making par this time round. www.espmag.co.uk

Maiden MUSCLE

This month it’s my pleasure to show it’s not just blokes who have a passion for their wheels!

Step forward Sally Woolner from Deeping St Nicholas and her tasty looking Chevrolet Camaro! Sally is a full time mum but also runs a small business Ceramics With Grace producing personalised pottery… when she’s not hitting the tarmac in this beaut that is. Apparently her hubby always wanted a Mustang Shelby, but they opted for this… and settled for calling the family dog Shelby instead. She bought the car three years ago from a friend who wanted to sell when she couldn’t bear the thought of it being sold off elsewhere. “I’d always loved the car,” explains Sally, “as had my husband and didn’t want to see it sold to a dealer or someone who wouldn’t love it like we did, so as my husband already had a hotrod he decided we would buy it for me!

34

www.espmag.co.uk

“My first drive was nerve wracking as it’s the complete opposite to drive than my automatic Audi estate, being a left hand drive manual, and having my husband next to me with his 'constructive criticism' however, after the first few trips out I gained confidence and fell in love.” Sally likes to be a bit different and loves the fact you don’t see many women driving American muscle cars “It’s a stunning car that’s been built and finished to a high standard,” Sally enthuses. “It is a sought-after 1969 model with a 6.6 litre V8 engine at 500bhp. Plus it’s my favourite colour! “It’s great to drive and I do like to test that my hubby can keep up now and again! We go to a lot of shows over the summer months and usually go in two cars, me in this and my hubby in his hotrod. We usually do attract attention while out and about and a lot of

people (mostly the men) are always surprised to see me in the driver’s seat with my daughter in her car seat next to me.” With wheels like this you’ve just got to show them off so it’s no surprise Sally is starting to enter it in a few shows and has even won her first trophy. “I went to a show the first year we had the car and had my good friend with me, as we arrived the guy on the gate was surprised to see two women in the car and said 'two women and a Camaro, you can’t get much better'! “I would never sell the car and hope one day my daughter will love it as I do and I might even let her drive it!” I can really see why this car is Sally’s Pride and Joy – what’s yours? Email us at office@espmag.co.uk and we can feature your favourite wheels whether it’s a car, truck, bike or whatever!

BUCKLE UP WITH NEW SAFETY CAMPAIGN You are twice as likely to die in a car crash if you don’t wear a seatbelt. Grim reading but that’s a fact! You wouldn’t think anyone would need a reminder to buckle up these days but apparently some do so to warn drivers of the personal and legal consequences of not wearing a seatbelt the SaferPeterborough partnership is educating drivers and enforcing seatbelt use across the city.

WHEELS BIKE SALE IS ON! With the motorcycling season winding down, now is a great time to buy or replace your bike for next year. Wheels in Fengate are currently having a store wide sale of bikes and clothing to clear stock to make way for new 2015 models arriving. Manufacturers are helping this with some very attractive finance deals to help you along. The sale is also

Look out for a series of events and activities in the coming months including child car-seat testing sessions, demonstrations in schools of the effects of not wearing a seatbelt and enforcing seatbelt use outside schools in Peterborough.

extended to their used bike range of which they’ll usually stock around 100 clean examples.

The law requiring all drivers to wear a seatbelt was introduced over 30 years ago. The Department for Transport estimates that front seat belts save more than 2,200 lives a year in the UK.

If you’re still planning to ride your bike through the winter why not get it booked in for a service and health check for your peace of mind too? Wheels Motorcycles is open seven days a week and can be reached on 01733 358555.

Steve Gedny of Cambridgeshire Constabulary told me – “The consequences of not wearing a seatbelt can be the difference between life and death, often the injuries

are horrific and life changing. Anybody not belted up in the rear of the car is likely to be thrown through the rear window, or hit the front seat driver or passenger with such force that someone is going to be seriously injured or killed. “The law holds the driver responsible for under 14s in the vehicle who are not properly secured. Drivers caught without a seatbelt face on the spot fines of £100. If prosecuted the maximum fine is £500.” Clair George, senior road safety officer for the SaferPeterborough partnership, added: “We still see children in vehicles not in a child car-seat. Injuries to children can be significantly reduced by using a child restraint. In a collision at 30 miles per hour, an unrestrained child would hit the front seat and anyone sat in it with the force of between 30 to 60 times their own body weight. Even in a minor crash an unrestrained child would be thrown about inside the vehicle injuring themselves and others.”

SUCCESS FOR FIRST CITY CAR SHOW This stunning Sunbeam Alpine I’m pictured in was one of just over 400 classic and vintage cars that were showcased at the first Peterborough Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show at The Embankment last month. The weekend event was a huge success thanks to organisers Peterborough City Council and Councillor Paula Thacker MBE. Cars, motorbikes, scooters, trucks, busses – in fact anything with a motor and wheels drew thousands of people to what I’m sure will be East Anglia’s biggest vehicle show when it returns next year. It was high time the city hosted its own show of this kind and what was particularly pleasing to see was the eclectic mix of cars on display. Owners travelled from as far north as Yorkshire and up from London to bring their pride and joy to the event and with word of mouth already spreading, the 2015 event could well pull in over 600 cars. The level of quality at this show also extended to its excellent range of food choice and general trade stands offering everything from high end crafts to collectable dinky cars. Top marks for a great event that will only get bigger and better. www.espmag.co.uk

BREaST CanCER awaREnESS MOnTh As you’re all probably aware by now, October is breast cancer awareness month with lots of the well-known charities getting involved and doing their bit to raise funds for a worthy cause.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and it affects both women and men. Thanks to research, more people are surviving breast cancer than ever before. Over 80% of women with breast cancer are still alive five years after diagnosis. However around 50,000 women are still diagnosed with breast cancer each year with around 12,000 women dying of the disease annually. So, to help combat the disease it’s important that you’re breast aware. Being breast aware is part of caring for your body. It means getting to know how your breasts look and feel so you know what is normal for you. You can then feel more confident

about noticing any unusual changes and reporting it to your GP. Early detection of breast cancer is encouraged as the sooner breast cancer is diagnosed the more effective treatment may be.

SKIN DEEP Are all those lotions and potions we use to freshen and cleanse really doing us any good – or are they putting more nasties in than they clean away?

C

leansing our body on the inside starts by turning off the tap of the external supply of toxicity from foods, drinks and stress, as well as a reduction in WiFi (frequency waves) and more. We know that what we put into our mouth is a key factor, but so too is what we slather, scrub, rub, spray, roll, and smear all over our skin in the name of either beauty or hygiene! The skin is not only our barrier from the outside world it also plays a major role in detoxification as it excretes waste through the pores. It’s also our protector and detector from the outside world as well as our temperature regulator and insulator. It helps to produce our Vitamin D and is a storage system for water and fat. Our skin also reflects to us our internal health, for instance clogged, dull, spotty skin is a mirror of an internal system that is not working optimally with wastes probably hanging around. Our skin absorbs what we put on it, you may know this by way of those nicotine patches that you used to help you stop smoking, the nicotine from the patch would be released into the skin and taken into the body.

You may be thinking about having a clean-up of your diet after the summer months of BBQ’s, beer festivals, summer holidays and the like so whilst you may be reading your food labels more closely and choosing less chemicals in food and drinks you also need to think about what you are going to take into the body by way of the skin. There are now hundreds of thousands of chemicals in our environment many of which you’ll find in personal care products and make up. Women can take in far more chemicals every day than men by way of make up. Many of our chemicals have not been tested for the long term, low dose level which we apply to the skin which is then absorbed, taken up into the blood stream and the body at large. As the call for action on personal hygiene and the chemicals contained in it are mainstream news these days it can’t come quickly enough when you read that scientists are now able to measure substances such as phthalates, parabens and chemical fragrances dumped in the body. This is a huge cause for concern even though we are still unsure of the long term risk as many

of these are said to be ‘potentially’ toxic – not sure about you but that reads well enough for me to try to reduce chemicals in my personal world! Whilst this is gloomy reading it need not be as now the awareness has shifted

mainstream big label make up and skin care brands. It’s also about looking at other places you spend your money on a daily/weekly basis, i.e. buying the morning coffee is more expensive than a pea size measure of good organic skin care creams.

‘What you put on your skin matters as much as what you put into your mouth…’ and so many companies are now slowly taking out toxic chemicals and/or new companies are popping up everywhere with organic, toxic free products. When I first started in Naturopathy and Nutrition all those years back it was a real struggle to find products but look now, we even have them in local supermarkets as the demand equals the growth of this information getting out there. Buying products doesn’t have to be as expensive as you would automatically assume, in fact those that I’ve used in the past are less expensive than that of

What you put on your skin matters as much as what you put into your mouth, so take a look at your bathroom cabinets, dressing table and make up bag and see what you can make a swap with next time the pot/tube runs low. GREAT EASTERN RUNNERS NEED YOU! Many will be raising vital funds for the half marathon’s official Children in Needcharity or the Anna’s Hope Fun Run or countless other good causes local and national. All of them will tell you that support along the route is a real boost.

Give me a cheer!

The race starts and finishes on the Embankment but the beauty of the PGER is that it brings the race right into the heart of the city with the route taking in many local housing estates. So pull up your deckchairs, get your neighbours round, sweeties at the ready for the runners and line the streets with a cheer to help push them on to the finish! ESP’s Mikey Clarke will be running for Arthritis Research UK and our photographers will be there capturing the action. There’s plenty of entertainment on the Embankment including stalls and a funfair and BBC Radio Cambridgeshire are hosting the day. Cathedral Square is also a great place to see the runners pass through and to give them your encouragement.

Thousands of runners are about to pound the streets of Peterborough – some will be dressed as superheroes and others will be aiming for a personal best, but whatever their reasons for running they need you!

You can still enter up to October 6 although there is now a £2 late entry fee. Runners can get reduced parking charges by signing up to RingGo the cashless parking service.

The Perkins Great Eastern Run takes place on Sunday October 12 and is renowned for great public support to help runners master the half marathon and make it through the fun run when they’re dressed as a chicken!

All you need to know about the half marathon and the fun run is on the website www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk

The heat is on! We all moan about not being fit and doing enough exercise but local guy Darren Grigas has proved it can be done… just three years ago he could run about 3 miles and now he’s preparing to run 156 miles across the desert in the gruelling Marathon des Sables next year – like you do! Bonkers? Quite possibly. But he’s definitely one determined guy and has clinched himself a column with national magazine Outdoor Fitness who are following his training. Now if you’re thinking Darren looks a tad familiar that’s because he’s quite often been seen striking a pose in ESP’s fashion features modelling the latest looks for us. For now though it’s lycra, backpacks and trainers with a dash of blood, sweat and tears! So what turned this Peterborough based creative designer into this mad running machine? Well one of those life changing moments after a car crash 4 years ago when he was advised to take regular exercise to deal with the pain of his injuries. It was tough but this is where his determination kicked in and once he’d overcome some really tough times in the gym he got hooked on going further and faster. “I built up to run my first half-marathon a couple of years ago and then took on various fun challenges like the Burghley Rat Race; a 20 mile obstacle course and then a 20 mile race up and over the summit of Snowdon,” explains Darren. “I figured if I was to keep taking on tougher challenges then why not aim right for the top and found the Marathon des Sables dubbed as 'The toughest foot race on Earth'! Around 156 miles across the hellishly hot and hilly Sahara desert all self-sufficient with around 7kg of food and kit on your back.” Hmmm, well that’s us put off right there, but not Darren! With only 1000 places open worldwide each year places are notoriously hard to secure and when registration opened all places were taken within four minutes! Darren was literally poised on the button and incredibly managed to land a place. “From that moment my lifestyle dramatically changed. I was no longer training just for fun, because running marathons in temperatures that can top 60 degrees can mean life or death out there if you're not prepared. Although only 2 deaths in 29 years isn’t bad odds!” You’ve gotta love his positive take on it all! “I was drawn by the incomprehensible challenge of not only if I could complete this in April but could I commit to the life changing training required to go from never having run one marathon to taking on the equivalent of six back to back across a desert!” In 2014 more than 110 (around 12%) failed to finish, many dropping out on day one and some even falling into comas with organ failure! Is he

really sure about this?! Apparently so – “The lure of taking a day or two off is always tempting but quitting is not an option. I’ve set my heart and mind on this and am ever more determined as each day passes. “I wake with new aches and pains each day, I'm keeping a strict diet so as not to carry any unnecessary weight across the sands so I’m always craving a good feast.“

Darren’s wisely enlisted help and has chosen the best coach for this challenge – Rory Coleman, the nine times world record holder and a guy who’s run the race 11 times now plus more than 860 marathons. “Since enlisting his help my training has dramatically increased. It includes long steady distances, hill runs, speedwork and full body workouts both outdoors and in the gym. I train seven days a week at the moment; 2-3 times a week at Vivacity’s Premier Fitness in Hampton plus many miles out on the roads and trails around Peterborough.” Although this was primarily a challenge for his own ambitions, having been touched by cancer in the family like so many others, Darren wanted to fundraise for a really worthy cause to really help spur him on. “I feel it would be a wasted opportunity to take one of the toughest races on earth without trying to raise some money for an amazing local charity and I’ve chosen Anna’s Hope. To raise funds that can help save real lives gives me so much more drive to push on through to successfully completing this epic challenge.” We reckon Darren’s a real inspiration and we’ll be backing him all the way. If you’d like to support him his donations page is: www.justgiving.com/DarrenGrigas You can also text donations to DUNE51 followed by the amount £10 (in this format) to 70070.

JIM DAVIDSON NO FURTHER ACTION

If you ask most people what they think of 'The Simpsons' the phrase 'not as funny as it used to be' will crop up. Whilst there's some truth the quality may have dipped at times over 25 years and over 550 episodes, there is one key element that hasn't, and that's The Simpsons' annual Halloween 'Treehouse of Horror' episodes. With each episode split into three segments and always taking place outside the normal continuity of the show you can always guarantee there'll be laughs set around a horror, sci-fi or supernatural background. The first ever one in 1990 set the tone when it introduced the aliens Kang & Kodos who abduct the Simpsons. On board the alien spaceship Lisa finds a cook book

called 'How to Cook Humans' she thinks they're about to be eaten and it gives way to one of the best ever visual gags in the show’s history. Kang blows some dust off the cover to show the title as 'How to Cook For Humans' but Lisa still suspicious blows more dust off the cover and the title then appears as 'How to Cook Forty Humans' before Kang, blows off the last of the dust to show the definite title being 'How to Cook for Forty Humans'. Or what about 'Nightmare Cafeteria'. That's the one that sees disruptive children used as a Sweeney Todd-like food source at Springfield Elementary after the school cafeteria is hit by budget cuts. Who can forget Principal Skinner chasing Bart down

the corridor, yelling – "I'm going to enjoy devouring you Bart Simpson. Yes, I believe I'll start, as you so often suggested, by EATING YOUR SHORTS!" But perhaps the greatest thing 'The Treehouse of Horror' episodes has given fans in recent years is the on-off cameos by 'Spider Pig' aka 'Harry Plopper'. Homer's pet pig that was arguably the funniest thing about the Simpson's movie of 2007 has been seen in a variety of spooktacular guises and jokes since. Altogether now 'Spider Pig, Spider Pig. Does whatever a spider pig does. Can he swing from a web? No he can't, he's a pig, Lookout! He is the Spider Pig!’

THE LAST LAUGH Finally, the next time you're down the pub you might like to raise your glass and remember comedy actor Roy Heather who passed away recently. Best known for playing Sid in Only Fools & Horses, he appeared in the show on a regular basis from the second series onwards. First playing the owner of the greasy spoon cafe, and later when he took over as landlord of the Nags Head. He had some memorable scenes in the show, including questioning Trigger about the legitimacy of his brand new broom, a great story about spending World War II as a prisoner of war thanks to Uncle Albert and barring Boycie & Marlene from the pub in the last ever episode with the line – 'Get off home and take your foster tits with you’. RIP Roy and thanks for the laughs.

JO CAULFIELD Award-winning comedian Jo Caulfield is back at the Key Studio with her hilarious new show.

Jo’s always wondered why anger is seen as such a bad thing. When life presents such irritations as vacuous celebrities, endless TV quiz shows, arrogant shop-assistants, emotionally ‘challenged’ men, drunken girlfriends who always pick the wrong partner, and a husband who continually quotes The Godfather, surely having a good rant – and a good laugh – is the only sensible reaction? As heard recently on BBC Radio 4's John Shuttleworth's Lounge Music versatile singer/organist, John Shuttleworth, wants to share fond memories of his favourite past weekends. THE POSH PAGE ESP’s new columnist Neil Gilby brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

DATES FOR YOUR

DIARY:

Why should you come to London Road?

If you love football, and you live in Peterborough, why do you not support your local team? I know that everyone who reads this will have their own opinion, and at the end of the day football is all about opinions, but let me share my opinion on the matter. Many excuses for the above question are as follows… I’m not from Peterborough originally – That’s brilliant, but what does that have to do with anything? If you’re a football fan then you LOVE football, not being originally from Peterborough should have nothing to do with it. Me myself I am from St. Albans and it didn’t stop me. I support another team – Appreciate that, do you go week in week out? If the answer is yes then fair play, if the answer is no then shame on you… If you’re a footy fan then come and watch football with your own eyes, experience a match day and the noise of the crowd –

I have a gripe, an opinion that really ruffles my feathers and I find it hard to make that feeling go away. don’t sit at home on your sofa watching it on TV, that’s not what being a football fan is all about. I am and always have been an Arsenal fan, but unfortunately due to one thing or another I am not going to be able to get to the Emirates week in week out, so do you know what I did to fill the fix? I went down to London Road whilst Posh were in the depths of League Two and the moment I stepped out onto the terrace I absolutely loved it and you couldn’t keep me away. Football is about the atmosphere, the togetherness the thrill of watching 90 minutes of a sport you adore. My point is if you are a football fan and you don’t come to London Road then I would love to invite you down to try. London Road is the home of entertainment in the country. Don’t believe me? Look it up for yourself. For seasons we have seen the most goals scored than in any other ground, we have had three

promotions in the last seven years, we have spent over a million pound on a player, sold players for even more – some of which now ply their trades in the Premier League. We have helped make names such as David Seaman, Jimmy Bullard, Matthew Etherington, Simon Davies, Craig Mackail-Smith, George Boyd, Dwight Gayle, Ryan Bennett, Russell Martin, Brit Assombalonga… I could go on and on but these are the calibre of players we have playing at London Road week in week out. It’s not only the football though, at London Road we have a stand dedicated to families strategically titled the Family Stand, we have FREE face painting and balloons for children and family/child meal deals all to ensure your visit to London Road is a good one. What I ask is this – Just try it, because you never know… you might just like it. UP THE POSH!

LIVE LINE UP @ STAMFORD Subways

There’s plenty of variety at Stamford Corn Exchange in October! Firstly on October 18 T-Rextasy relive the magic of glam rocker Marc Bolan. As the only T-Rex tribute band endorsed by the last remaining members of the band, T-Rextasy will take you back to the seventies with their lead singer’s ‘uncanny’ resemblance to the iconic Marc Bolan. If you Love to Boogie then this will be the night for you. Then on October 29 Joe Brown will be appearing with his son, music producer, Pete for a night of rock ’n’ roll and memories. After spending five decades in the spotlight performing on stage and screen, Joe Brown is showing no signs of slowing down as he visits the area as part of his latest nationwide tour.

Hi On Maiden

SUBWAYS AND HI ON MAIDEN HIT THE MET As Peterborough’s independent music venue the Met Lounge celebrates 15 years bringing us some great live music, they’re doing it in style with a couple of strong acts. Top Iron Maiden tribute Hi On Maiden will rock the venue on Saturday October 11 followed by The Subways on Tuesday October 28.

Finally October 31 The Ultimate Elton & The Rocket Band Show comes to Stamford. Paul Bacon fills the Rocket Man’s platform shoes. Voted the UK’s no.1 Elton John tribute band, this show is not to be missed by Elton fans. Great choices and whichever show you want tickets for the Box Office is 01780 766455.

HIGHWAY TO HELL’OWEEN If you’re a rock fan, the South Grove Community Centre in Stanground has a real Halloween treat for you…

Hi On Maiden are the only Maiden tribute band officially recognised by the real Iron Maiden – indeed several members of the real Maiden have at times played with the tribute band! You can expect all the classics including Run to The Hills, Can I Play with Madness, Fear of the Dark and The Trooper.

Highway To Hell'oween on Saturday November 1 has plenty of hard rock scheduled because the evening features a triple bill of classic tribute rock for Halloween with sets from Blag Sabbath, Lizzy On The Loose and Let There B/DC. Doors open at 6.30pm with Lizzy On The Loose getting things underway at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile The Subways have announced a long awaited tour of the UK and Ireland and one leg of the itinerary sees the band return to the scene of their first ever Peterborough show at The Met Lounge. It’s over two years since the band hit the road and singer Billy Lunn told us – “It feels like it's been ages since we last toured the UK, and we're so excited about the new album. We're all itching to get back on the road and back on stage!”

To capture the mood there'll be an optional Halloween fancy dress, with a cash prize for the best outfit on the night, but plain denim will be OK.

Their new one off single ‘My Heart Is Pumping to a Brand New Beat’ was released to popular acclaim in the summer, via the band’s own label YFE Records. The band’s gig at The Met Lounge wil see able support from Max Raptor and Boston band The Vigilantes.

There’s a full bar and you can get advance tickets priced £7.50 in advance from the South Grove Centre or pay on the door (£10) on November 1.

Book online for both gigs at www.seetickets.com, in person from The Met or call 01733 566100.

MOVES LIKE JAGGER AND STEELEYE SPAN @ THE KEY Great to see the Key Theatre featuring some very entertaining music shows which will be ideally suited to the ambience of the place. On Saturday October 18 the Counterfeit Stones bring their show to Peterborough. It’s packed with big hits, outrageous fashion, vintage guitars and a huge dollop of ‘Spinal Tap’ humour. Believe me, I’ve seen the show and there’s a good deal of tongue in cheek entertainment as well as great musicianship. The lead singer is Nick Jagger and he certainly knows how to entertain

48

an audience. And they’ve done that for nearly 20 years earning huge accolades for their performances at places like Buckingham Palace, Microsoft and the Harry Potter end of production party. Perhaps the highest accolade is from Sir Mick Jagger himself who quoted The Counterfeit Stones as being, “The Most famous Stones band in England”. Not quite but brilliant entertainment. Another great night at the Key comes from folk rock pioneers Steeleye Span who are celebrating

45 years with a new live show. You can see Maddy Prior – the voice of the band – lead a line-up featuring faces old and new. Having recently collaborated with Sir Terry Pratchett on a record based on his Wintersmith novel, their 2014 shows will see them perform new gems alongside classics that have made them one of the most successful British folk rock bands ever. Tickets for Steeleye Span at the Key on Sunday October 19 and the Counterfeit Stones are available on 01733 207239.

ESP INTERVIEW

Mallory Knox

Named after the murderous heroine featured in Oliver Stone’s outrageous feature Natural Born Killers, Mallory Knox are back with their brand new album Asymmetry and a UK tour to boot. Having hit the big time with their first album Signals which featured the massive singles Lighthouse and Beggars, the band are ready to break new boundaries this time round with a newly focused set of aspirations. Alex Jones chatted to Sam Douglas from the band to talk about the new album, their show in Peterborough and the resurgence of rock music. Hi Sam, how are things in the Mallory Knox camp? “Very good mate! We’ve been waiting a while to get round to this point so yes, very exciting.” Are you excited for the release of Asymmetry? “Yeah it’s been a while coming for us to get these songs out, you know how it is, being in a band we’ve had these songs for almost a year before we even stepped inside the studio so we’re itching for people to hear this stuff. We’ve just put Shout at the Moon out there and Ghost in the Mirror a couple of months back and the reaction’s been great so we’re excited to get the rest of the album out there.” You mentioned having had the songs for a while now, but you’ve actually turned this album around pretty quickly. Did you write the majority on the road, or did you get straight back to it after the last tour? “Signals came out last year but we actually had those songs recorded back in January 2012 so as a band we hadn’t actually written anything new for a long time. In fact we’d left it for so long that when it came to actually writing the new album it was almost like we’d forgotten how to do it. “It took us a good couple of months to get into the swing of things and then we had a two to three week period where we finished seven or eight of the songs for the album. After that we were able to experiment with certain instruments, different melodies and enjoy the process a bit more, but those first few months made it clear to us that we need to write on the road to keep our song writing abilities fresh.”

I’m a big fan of your anthemic choruses and from hearing the first few tracks you’ve released from this album, especially Shout at the Moon, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of them this time round. Do these come naturally to you or do you devote extra time into getting them sounding huge? “Shout at the Moon was actually one of the first tracks we’d written for the album and when we came round to demo-ing it we had some time to really think about how we wanted it to sound. The chorus to that track was completely re-written and when we went into the studio we had a lot of time to think about different guitar tones and things like that. “Unlike with Signals which was recorded in three weeks, this time round we had four months to think about things so a lot more time was dedicated to specific parts and really getting as much out of every song that we could.” During your tour you’re playing The Cresset in Peterborough on Monday November 17, you’re from Cambridge originally have you played many shows here before? “We’ve played The Met Lounge a few times before but we haven’t played it in a couple of years actually. When we were starting out we would travel between Cambridge, Peterborough and Bury St Edmunds, they would be the three cities we’d play every other month. “We’ve been away elsewhere for a couple of years so its going to be good to come back. I remember when we first played The Met it was in front of 20 people, then we came back and played for 40 people then for 100 and the last time we sold it out!

“But yeah the Peterborough date is like our homecoming show, it’s the show our families are going to come to and hopefully a few people from Cambridge will make the trip. It’s gonna be a good one! Mallory Knox’s new album Asymmetry is out Monday October 27.
