Remember we told you about Peterborough model Lord Rob Walters who was strutting his stuff on tour in ‘Here Come the Boys’? Well although the tour is now over we’re pleased to tell you that you can still catch Rob and the boys in action in a slightly scaled down version of the show at The Pigalle Club in Piccadilly, London. It starts on October 8 and then runs fortnightly after that and there’s also a possibility of a European tour next year. He’s a busy lad and will be hitting the big screen soon in the Matt Damon movie ‘Green Zone’, so if you can’t get to London you’ll still get chance to see a little more of our high class local star.

With a chilling climax promised, this play’s bound to keep you on the edge of your seat. Tickets £17. Box office: 01733 207239.
NEW MOVIE SEASON Peterborough Arts Cinema at John Clare Theatre, Peterborough Library aim to show films that make you think and are a little different from the usual blockbusters available – chances are, if you’ve read about an amazing new film but can’t seem to find a showing, it’ll be on here at some point. The new season starts on September 10 with ‘Dean Spanley’, a film about a clergyman with a taste for rare liquor. Edwardian gent Fisk has recently lost his brother in the Boer War and comes to ask the Dean for his views on reincarnation – the Dean answers with a funny, slightly curious shaggy dog tale. A film from Korea, ‘The Good, The Bad, The Weird’ is shown on September 17. Based on ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’, it follows three extreme characters on their search for treasure buried in the wilds of Manchuria, the easternmost region of China and is a real adventure tale, mixed with comedy and romance. Then Steve Coogan stars in ‘In The Loop’ on September 24, a bitter satire of the lead up to the Iraq war, complete with spin, sexing-up and cynicism.
THE WEDDING SINGER Sweetly romantic and packed with good tunes, ‘The Wedding Singer’ comes to the South Holland Arts Centre on September 23 – 26. Set in the mid 80s and replete with perms and shoulder pads, it follows Robbie Hart who’s lost his rose-tinted view of love due to his partner leaving him – as his job involves him going to weddings every week, he quickly becomes bitter and cynical. He becomes close friends with a waitress, Julia, who’s engaged to another man and together, they discover what love is really about. Tickets £8.50. Box office: 01775 764777.

He’s a real music legend – even the Queen’s a fan, as he was awarded an MBE in 2008. PERFECT TEN - REVIEW
Photos: Mike Harris
RANDALL ROOTZ MK 3
The third annual Randall Rootz Festival, named after its inspirational namesake, Mark Randall, placed itself well and truly on the festival map this year, with a stunning line-up of music and entertainment over the weekend of August 14-16. ESP supported the festival as part of our Perfect Ten series, events we’re backing in celebration of our ten years in business and this was certainly a worthy contender. Kicking-off proceedings at The Brewery Tap was the 90s chart-topping group The Beautiful South (now renamed New Beautiful South), who certainly didn’t miss Paul Heaton as front man. Whether they’ll miss Heaton’s song-writing as they re-establish themselves is yet to be seen, but with a back-catalogue of hits to work with they had the near-500 capacity crowd in the palm of their hands. Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler worked their magic and had the audience singing along to a 90 minute set, including ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Perfect 10’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’, ‘A Little Time’ and ‘Good As Gold’. The roof almost lifted off when they left the stage, but fortunately they were back minutes later for a resounding encore and a great time was had by all. Supporting earlier in the evening were Angryman (who Mark Randall was drummer/percussionist for before his sad demise from cancer in 2007). The four-piece band wowed the audience and lay down the amazing atmosphere that carried on throughout the night. The following day saw the event move outside to Charters on the town bridge, where eleven bands entertained from midday to well past midnight. As the day went on Pogues tribute

band, The Dead Rabbits started to draw people onto the dancefloor and had them jigging away to the Irish-punk gems of Shane MacGowen. Mike Carr from The Dead Rabbits enjoyed some friendly banter with the football supporters from The Posh and Sheffield Wednesday as they sang football chants to each other between songs, the sun shone and the day was well and truly set up for a winner. Later the KidZone procession was led away by the team from The Green Backyard and headed into Cathedral Square making a hell of a racket with homemade instruments and faces painted suitably for the occasion, and it showed once again that Randall Rootz has established itself as a truly family-friendly community festival. A new dimension to this year’s festival was the performance poetry – delivered between sets by the various groups of Peterborough poets throughout the weekend and including some very amusing and cheeky observational banter. Finishing off outside, and just when we all thought it couldn’t get any better, Kissmet hit the stage and showed everyone why they’re regular performers at Glastonbury and other music festivals worldwide. The sun was setting, the audience was dancing and the combination of bhangra music, dhol drums, rock guitar and heady Asian vocals filled the evening air! What a delight.
The New Beautiful South
Sunday certainly had a more relaxed musical theme than Saturday and as the day went on the grown-ups were in heaven, the kids were running around in painted faces, the real-ale was flowing and a great time was had by all. Finally The Claddah Band, a fun and energetic line-up of Irish musicians playing traditional tunes had the crowd up and jigging away as the 2009 Randall Rootz Festival came to a close for another year. The organization behind the festival, Randall Rootz Community Music, was originally set up in 2007 by friends and relatives of Mark Randall, to help raise awareness for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice. They aim to bring musical diversity to Peterborough and offer us all the chance to see and hear music we wouldn’t normally be able to and here at ESP we congratulate them on another fine event! For the full review of the event go to www.espmag.co.uk and for more info about this year’s festival and the work of Randall Rootz Community Music, go to www.randallrootz.org

GREEN MAN BEER CONSORTIUM
Photo: Terry Harris
The Green Man in Stamford plays host to a Beer Festival on September 11 – 13. With 35 real ales over the inside and outside bars, there’ll also be live music all weekend. Dr. A’s Blues Consortium will be playing on the Friday night, two bands are booked for the Saturday and the Sunday sees an open mic session, with the landlords expecting a big turnout of local artists. There’ll be a barbecue in the garden, weather permitting of course, and it’ll be a lovely way to celebrate the end of summer.
PETERBOROUGH HAS TALENT
The Deepings Raft Race returned this August and was a massive success with lots of cash raised for Sue Ryder Care’s Thorpe Hall hospice. Pretty much all of the Deepings residents came out to support the event and the whole of Market Deeping was packed. With live music from Loose Baby Charlotte, Circa 73, the Gangsters, the Nuggets and Retrolux, a funfair and of course, raft races in glorious sunshine, the day was a huge success and will be back next year. Organiser Richard Ash told ESP – “It was an awesome day, we managed to pretty much close the village! We got the lion’s share of public support and in fact, I think the only complaint was of overcrowding – but all the local businesses were overflowing with customers and our sponsors were definitely happy!”
Due to its massive success last year the Peterborough Has Talent show returns, this time at the Key Theatre on September 5. Due to the sheer number of talented entrants there’ll be two shows this time, one for the under 14’s which starts at 2.30pm and one for over 14’s at 7.30pm. The quality of entrants last year was incredibly high – ESP columnist Andy Slater was a judge and was remarkably positive about an event that didn’t involve getting drunk in a field! Don’t miss your chance to see some of the freshest talent the city has to offer and find out who’ll take the crown from last year’s winner Wendy Jones (pictured). All proceeds go to the Papworth Trust and the Mayor’s charities. Tickets £6. Box office: 01733 207239.
BEERS AND POOCHES
Local radio station Lite FM hosted the main stage and presenter Keith Dalton started the race. He told ESP – “I thought it was arguably the best raft race event ever. Some of the rafts and their teams really got into the spirit of the day and the idea of holding the event in the centre of Market Deeping made the day more intimate and a real community get-together. I’d like to congratulate the organisers and the Town Council for the day. Lite FM was delighted to have been part of it.” So, watch this space for details of next year’s event.
MADNESS AT THE MALL
BORN TO RIDE Things will be getting a little greasy at Charters on September 13 for the 3rd Annual Classic and Custom Bike Show. With prizes and certificates for the best bikes, there’ll be plenty of gorgeous machines to drool over and if you’re that way inclined, plenty of chance to talk with like-minded entrants. There’ll be live music from the Maria Danes Band later on in the afternoon and last year’s show saw a big crowd enjoy the sunshine while raising money for Sue Ryder Care. To enter the competition, there’ll be a £2 donation, for more info call 01733 315766.
Head to Serpentine Green at Hampton on September 12 and you may think that lunatics have escaped the asylum – why else would people in fancy dress be racing hospital beds? Worry not, as it’s just the Bed Push in aid of Thorpe Hall and Sue Ryder Care which sees teams pushing their ‘patient’ through an obstacle course deigned to test their nursing skills to the full – as in, not losing the patient along the way! It’s always a laugh and all for a good cause, so head down and make your shopping a little more exciting. For more info, contact thorpe.fundraising@suerydercare.org or call 01733 330060.
ANIMAL MANIA AT AUTUMN SHOW If you’re animal-mad then don’t miss the Autumn Show at the East of England Showground on October 11 which will feature thousands of animals of all shapes and sizes, with exhibits ranging from mice and fancy rats to Shire horses, as well as rare livestock, poultry and wildfowl. There’ll also be dogs aplenty, as the Kennel Club will be hosting Scruffts, the championship for cross breeds, terrier and lurcher classes and agility trials. For something more surreal, check out the East of England Giant Vegetable Competition – expect massive marrows and planet-sized pumpkins – watch the donkey driving and harnessed goats, or try your hand at welly wanging. You can start your Christmas shopping too, as there’ll be over 200 trade stands selling unique and unusual products – not bad value for just £6 a ticket! Box office: 0845 600 5445 or visit www.eastofengland.org.uk

POSH’S LATEST SIGNING ‘Boyd, Sweat and Tears’ is the new book by Paul Donnely and Paul Mitchell and is the diary of Peterborough United’s 2008/9 promotion-winning season and goes into detail about every single game won and lost. Recently players George Boyd and Jamie Day went along to Waterstone’s in Bridge Street to sign copies and chat to fans. Waterstone’s manager Anna Elmore told ESP – “The Posh signing was a fabulous event with people of all ages turning up, all wishing the boys well for the forthcoming season. It was wonderful to have George Boyd and Jamie Day give up their time for free on a Sunday morning to help sales of the book as all proceeds are going to various charities.” If you’d like a copy the special hardback edition is just £15 and Anna assures us she still has a few signed copies available!

CLASS OF 1990 REUNION TICKETS ON SALE Anyone who was in my year at school needs to be reading this. A school reunion’s being planned for those of us who left Stanground College in 1990 (or stayed on as sixth formers) on March 12 next year at Stanground College from 7.30pm. Tickets to the event cost £15 and for this you'll:
PHIL AND I ONLINE WITH LITE FM Regular listeners to Lite FM 106.8 will know the station is now streamed, meaning you can listen online 24 hours a day. This also means the soon to be award-winning Talking Sport show with yours truly and co-host Phil 'I've always got my eyes shut in photos' Adlam can be heard live every Wednesday from 7 until 8pm around the globe. Our weekly sporting guests range from attractive world record powerlifters like Louise Fox (pictured) to mature men around town like Phil Elmer and Phil Wing. There's no expense spared and guests are greeted by our glam(ish) assistant 'Emily Lite' and offered chilled water from the dispenser. Once the show starts they get to have a go at destroying the studio with our pound shop plastic football by trying to beat the kick-up score laid down by our previous guest. If you play or are involved in local sport and are brave enough to join our show as a guest then email us at studio@lite1068.com My dulcet tones can also be heard every Wednesday at 12.30pm on Talking Peterborough with Keith Dalton. Keith will be greasing my palm with a few quid at the end of the new football season after a bet we recently made on his show. We've each predicted the top six in this season's Championship and we'll be paying one another £1 for each of our teams that make it. I've chosen (in no particular order): Leicester, Reading, Newcastle, Bristol City, Ipswich and of course Posh. Keith's choices are so rubbish I can't be bothered to print them.
• See faces (ugly and pretty I'm sure) you haven't seen for 20 years • If you're like me, chat up girls you always wanted to get off with but never did • If you're like me, be unable to talk about my children or wife – I have neither • Scoff a scrumptious buffet • Enjoy some all night 'entertainment' • Poke fun at what you used to look like at school on the Wall of Shame (please post more photos!) • Talk to teachers on the night and tell them they we're right that you'd never come to nothing • Wear what you want – no dress code • Have the chance to be made famous in April's Paparazzi pages of this magazine This promises to be an unforgettable night but it'll only happen if all members on the Facebook Stanground School Reunion (85-90) 2010 page buy a ticket and spread the word to those who aren't online. Tickets (no ticket, no entry) are on sale and payment details are on the page. Members have until November to buy their ticket and everyone needs to commit to make the event stack up financially (less than 100 tickets sold and the event will be cancelled). So my fellow school buddies, if you want this reunion put your money where your mouth is!

I'll be joined by my ESP Paparazzi girls to photograph revellers having a good time at an event I'm looking forward to. Expect tribal beats and funky electro, including live percussion and magic. My main men Dan 'speed puncher' Santoro and Steve 'back in the day' Andrews will

be spinning their stuff at the free entry gig which kicks off at 10pm. For more info give Latinis a bell on 01733 891224. Don't forget the Latinis ‘Tapas for a Tenner’ (as much tapas as you can eat for 10 quid!) offer is still running Monday to Friday from 6pm until 9pm – and at the same time you can enjoy buy-one-getone free on selected cocktails too.
Good news boys and girls, Verve on Church Street is still open and going strong with plenty of action lined-up this month! Make sure you grab the last of the sun on their fab patio with the Crunk’d Up DJs and BBQ on August 30 and the Locality crew who touch down there on September 4. Word is the team from the now defunct Bar Bloc will also be dropping by mid September too so the party goes on. If live music and sexy rock stars are more your thing take a peep at Axe Girl on September 5 and keep your eyes open for the return of a fantastic Pink tribute act who’s already gone down a storm there on her previous visit. So, until that time be sure to pop in and take advantage of their decent drinks promotions. Susan and I couldn't help but be drawn to their rather neat looking drinks board. We were sober of course…
PASSED MY BIKE TEST! What a relief! I can now go out and shop for my motorbike. Passing my full motorcycle test was one of the trickiest things I've done. It needed discipline, determination and patience but most of all it required me to listen to the expert instruction given to me by CAM Rider, to whom I'm eternally grateful. All it took for me to pass was five lessons including one about gear conversion. So, for someone who'd only had three month's scooter riding experience the year previously I don't think I did too bad! But I did have a few 'moments' along the way... I remember having a not-so-good second lesson where I couldn't understand how to do a figure-of-eight around the cones. I went home deflated but left the following week feeling a little more positive because my instructor had the patience to walk me through it until I could see where I was going wrong. Then there was the test day. Prayer number one was answered, it was dry – although a 'chance' of rain was forecast for later. My day began with an hour lesson where Mike my instructor said it was my last chance to go over any areas of my riding I wasn't too happy with. Like most examiners, mine was introverted and didn't say much. My Module One (the first part, at the test centre) was pretty much perfect except for a 'moment' during my figure-of-eight where I stuck my leg out as I undercooked a turn. But it wasn't a fail, I'd passed! Then there was an hour wait before part two – the road ride. It was the longest hour of my life but then finally I was off – under a cloudy sky – and within 20 minutes it started lashing down. It was my first experience of wet riding but I took it like a man. And it was at this point when the examiner expected me to make a tricky overtaking move on the busy A605. I chose my moment and thankfully The Force was with me. As the ride was coming to an end I was sure I'd passed but I still had to keep it together with just a couple of miles to go. At this point I'd already racked up five minor faults (less than 15 is a pass) and it transpired afterwards that I'd gained three more during those last two miles! Mainly due to excitement and tiny lapses of concentration. It wasn't my best ride but I passed with very few minor faults and with three faults more than CAM Rider aim for their students to pass with (sorry for the 'mad' last two miles guys!)

www.espmag.co.uk ( September )
So it’s time to stash the bikinis for another year, but cheer up, that also means it’s time to invest in a new autumn wardrobe as the season’s fresh looks hit the high street. To stay on trend this autumn opt for warm berry tones teamed with smart slate grey, get back to black and add a little pinstripe for that oh-so-smart office look. No need for dark to mean bleak – add a funky touch to your work wardrobe essentials with statement purple tights, fuchsia frills, or tones of purple and pinks in your accessories. The new season at Westgate Department Store has some hidden gems and you can stock up with your key pieces at some great prices. Wool coats for less than 50 quid have got to be worth a look!

Getting ready for a little red carpet glamour, girls? Whether it’s the prom or the work’s do, get ready to strut your stuff in style.
Swanky Rags’ new, more spacious shop on Broadway now has an even bigger range of gorgeous gowns to choose from which will make you feel like you’re the belle of the ball... or the prom queen. When full-on glamour is called for every girl wants to feel fab, so it’s time to head for the only prom gown shop in the city centre and the only one in the area stocking names like Night Moves, Primavera Couture (as worn by Miss UK) and Scarlet Evenings who produce the most soughtafter prom dresses and also do fabulous evening wear for ladies too. Owner Rachel Farrington knows her stuff so you’ll be sure to come away with a frock that thrills. So what’s hot for the new season? “Yellows and greens are going to be big in various shades,” says Rachel. “Style wise it’ll be tight decorative bodices with a full skirt or straight dresses with one shoulder strap. “If you’re tall you can get away with most things but if you’re on the shorter side I’d recommend you go for less layers if you want a Cinderella style gown. A ‘V’ style bodice is very slimming and if you have a bigger bust go for a tie-back or
18

lace-up so you can get a perfect fit. If you’re more flat-chested opt for a dress with cups to create the illusion of more! “Skin colour is more important than hair colour – for example a red haired girl can get away with a red dress. Olive skin tones look great in brighter colours like lime green and burnt orange but paler skin tones are flattered by warmer tones. “There are no hard and fast rules and we’re honest – if you try something on and it’s not working we will help you find the right look for you. We’d rather you left with nothing than with the wrong dress!” So there’ll be no frock horrors but there’ll also be no ‘same dress’ frock shocks either as Swanky Rags have a one dress policy for each event, so once one style’s been bought it won’t be sold to anyone else for the same bash, even in a different colour. We like it! Even better there’s a pay as you go plan so if cash is tight you can lay down a deposit and pay off your dress over time. So Cinderella, you will go to the ball... prom... red carpet bash... and in the dress of your dreams!

I write my column this month from a bed-ridden state fearing I may have been struck down with the horror of swine flu… Makes a difference from me usually suffering from ‘wine flu’ after a weekend! Although I am hoping it’s the common ‘man flu’ making me feel like death warmed up, so please forgive me if I’m a bit lack lustre this month but all I want to do is curl up and sleep!
I’m hoping I’ll be fit and healthy for my band’s gig at the Lord Burghely in Stamford on August 28, no type of flu will stop the show going on!

STAMFORD
Great to see local lad Christopher Birks returns to his home town of Stamford on September 30 as part of Black Ram Productions’ tour of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’. This is the first time he’s returned to perform in Stamford since he became a professional actor and will be playing the character of Martini.
MAMA LIZ’S CELEBRATES ITS FIRST BIRTHDAY! It doesn’t seem a year since my favourite new venue opened, but on the bank holiday weekend of August 28-31 the pub / restaurant / wicked gig venue will be celebrating its first birthday!
They’ll kick off the weekend’s celebrations with the fantastic Groove Cartel. Martin Shop and the lads will be performing live from 9.30pm, and even better it’s free to get in! On Sunday Mama Liz’s first annual Chilli Cook-Off will be taking place – a chilli cooking competition and pepper eating competition. The cook-off kicks off at 3pm and anyone wanting to enter should get a form from the bar or from their website www.mamaliz.co.uk. The winner will get a meal for two and a lovely bottle of bubbly! There will also be a bank holiday beer fest as well featuring the best of the local ales.

‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ is widely regarded as one of the best American novels, and transferred to the stage in 1963. Made world famous by the film version starring Jack Nicholson, Danny Devito and Christopher Lloyd which won five Academy Awards, it follows the story of Randall McMurphy who attempts to avoid a stretch in a prison work farm by pleading insanity. When he arrives on the psychiatric ward, he finds a far from healing atmosphere and attempts to lead the inmates into rebellion against the evil Nurse Ratchet and the system. With a 16-strong cast, this is a West End calibre production right in the heart of Stamford at the Corn Exchange Theatre (and is one of my favourites!) so get booking now. Tickets are a tenner from 01780 766455.
BOURNE TAKE THE CROWN IN THE BATTLE OF THE TOWNS! The finals of the Battle of the Town’s competition came to an end last month at The Toreador in Stamford, with Bourne band Reaction finally being named the winners after much debate from the judges! Each town entered three acts who all performed songs, after which the judges picked a winner from each town to go head to head. The winner took away a cash price of £900 and a day’s recording in the studio. Not a bad prize if you ask me! I’m also sad to hear that the lovely Sally Weatherall will be leaving The Toreador at the end of August to start a new career in teaching. Although I am happy to hear that my old pal Glynn Roberts will be taking over as manager so it’s not all bad, and I’ll be popping in to see the old boy when he takes over!

- Increased food intolerances - Allergies… and more Your intestinal garden can really help support your immunity, at the moment with swine flu predicted to get worse there’s no other area as important as your immunity in your intestinal tract or your ‘inner tube’. Certain habits that we have that do not help friendly bacteria to flourish include… - Too much sugar and refined carbohydrates - Alcohol - Smoking - Stress - Over use of medical drugs - Lack of fibre - Frequent use of antibiotics - Frequent use of laxatives - Contraceptive pill - Lack of good nutrients… and much more Our friendly type of bacteria are not only our immune supporters which can protect us they also…
The Good, the Bad and the Bacteria… I remember spending hours as a youngster playing with mud, sticks, branches and grime as we built many a good den (and no, that was not this weekend!) Being told that a bit of dirt never hurt anyone, it really never occurred to me that the world out there is a dangerous place with all the bugs and bacteria lurking in the soil… or is it?
many more? Asthma, allergies, food intolerances are all now accepted as the ‘norm’, of course the external environment may play a part but what about looking closer to home, what about the immunity from within?
The saying goes ‘there is good and bad in everyone’. This also applies to the good and bad bacteria in you. Believe it or not we have more bacterial cells in the gut With the increase in cleanliness and the masses of than we have cells in the entire body. We have antibacterial bacteria, fungi and products to buy Are we killing off too much of the bacteria which parasites that have for the body and our immune system uses to keep us strong? evolved inside us in the home it does a natural state which make me question if we’re becoming too clean. Are help support our immunity. When we push out and kill we killing off too much of the bacteria which our off the good (as well has the bad) this will then give immune system uses to keep us strong? the green light for the more unfriendly type of bacteria to grow out of control which can then not only weaken Thankfully we’re able to fight certain infectious our immunity but may cause symptoms such as – diseases using antibiotics which have undoubtedly saved many a life, including my own as a young baby, - Diarrhoea so I for one owe a great deal of gratitude to this - Constipation medical drug. But, with the increase in superbugs and - Fatigue the more chronic problems seen today we have to - Bloating / wind / indigestion question if in some cases they’ve been overused. - Skin complaints - Low immunity Have we solved one problem only to have created
- Help to produce Vitamins B and K - Help eliminate old hormones from the body - Help bowel regulation - Help lower cholesterol - Help us with digestion of foods - Help with the PH balance of the body - Help reduce inflammation which may be a good protection from bowel diseases and inflammation… and much more You can help yourself by taking foods that are pro and prebiotic such as – - Natural bio yoghurts (avoid the sweetened, sugar filled yoghurts) - Increasing soluble fibre from veg / fruit / oats etc - Getting as much natural food back in your diet - Fermented products such as miso, sauerkraut etc Good probiotic strains (these are bacteria that are pro life) can also be used but always take advice to make sure you’re getting the right ones as there is a lot of hype out there! Confessions... Susan Saunders
susan.saunders@espmag.co.uk
THE NAME’S JONES… BRIDGETT ‘WALKING-EMBARRASSMENT -HIDDEN-IN-SUSAN’S-BODY’ JONES! Into my third week of humdrumness I sat at my desk typing away, more frantically should someone happen to walk by, but typing away all the same. The weather was blurgh (should August be like this?) the office, as a consequence was a little blue and the goose (aka me) was getting fat… Anyway, wanting some excitement to come my way (with my dreams of transforming into the sixth member of Girls Aloud not materialising) I decided a hot chocolate could well be the answer to all my problems. I’d rushed to work earlier that morning as the alarm didn’t go off AGAIN! A hot chocolate in a nice big cup, with chocolate sprinkles, squirty cream and any other fat making equipment would certainly put the world to rights… or so I thought. As I stood up, planning to reply to my 2000 emails on my return to the desk, I was tapped on my shoulder by Mr Company Chairman (his real identity has been hidden to save further embarrassment).
Reconstruction Mr Big Company Chairman: “Susan, you may care to fasten that button… To preserve your modesty, you understand.” Susan: “Huhh? What button?” My mind quickly darted to earlier in the morning as I’d rushed out of the door with a button undone at the bottom of my buttoned (nape of neck to back of knees) taupe coloured, subtly sophisticated dress. “I’ll button it when I get to work,” I thought as it only looked like part of the design. Correction! I reached around to the back of my dress (no such luck that it was at the bra strap section) I lowered my grip and found… bare bottom. The one button that was undone to start with had become five buttons from the back of my knees to the nape… of my big bouncing derriere! Susan: “Gulp” Mr Big Company Chairman: “Yes. Quite.” As I ran backwards away from the crime scene and into the kitchen I thought to myself it wasn’t such a good idea to keep repeating (out loud) the lines – “I’ll go tomorrow.” This is an activity I often do when the unwelcome skinny fairy called ‘conscience’ appears on my shoulder reminding me about visiting the gym.
And then the laughter started. Guffaw, guffaw, guffaw. And then the tears came. And I wasn’t so lucky as to be having some horrible nightmare. As I spend most of my time trying to be seen as über professional at work (minute that, Jeffery! Minute that I say my darling!) it makes the whole thing more laughable. Outside of work I am quite often the clown, inside work I have a more firm and, dare I say, assertive side to me. This type of thing does not, and should not, happen to ‘work Susan’, oh no, this type of thing often happens to ‘out of work Susan’! But then I realised that perhaps this thought process was adding to my unbelievable embarrassment and perhaps it’s about time I stopped putting ‘Susan’ into different categories – There.Is.Just.One.Susan. ‘Work Susan’ and ‘out of work Susan’ are the same person. After all you just can’t try to be someone else so I have to use the card I was dealt! The classroom beauty will always (although I pray for her facial warts to appear – I’m not bitter at all) be the classroom beauty. The classroom clown, moi, will always remain. After giving myself a pep talk in the ladies’ mirror… Susan: “Don’t worry. Susan you are amazing – you look grrrrreat!” I felt like balance had been restored. Smiling to myself as I floated out of the ladies I bumped into one of the Associate Directors, who saw, what to them appeared to be a smarmy smile plastered right across my face. Associate Director: “Susan… are you ok?” Susan: “Yeeeeees???” Associate Director: “You look rather pleased with yourself… and you’ve just walked out of the toilets.” Doh! Maybe I won’t rush to work tomorrow.

It’s 999 not 925 Sick of the daily grind? Maybe you should beat the Monday morning blues and feel the ‘force’.
Life in the police force might not be quite like CSI or The Bill but it’s certainly a job with stability and the chance to do something worthwhile for your community. It’s not all about pounding the beat, the police do more than you think and there are more roles within the force than you might imagine. There’s the stuff that makes the TV shows exciting, like scenes of crime, but if you’re big on fitness you’re not confined to teaching Pilates at the local gym, you could be an instructor in the police force making sure the officers are fit enough to catch the bad guys! From taking 999 calls to being a detention officer, from working in occupational health to being an administrator in HR, the roles at Cambridgeshire police are as varied as they are in any business. Secretaries to IT experts, physios to switchboard operators – they need them all. Sara Hughes, head of recruitment says – “Whatever function it is all roles support each other and eventually that transfers back to supporting the local community – you’re working for your next door neighbour so to speak, as this truly is a job that gives something back. “You meet a huge variety of people and receive lots of support. It’s a nice organisation to be a part
of and makes you feel valued. Plus you’re working for a stable, consistent employer.” If you fancy a more up-front role and want to get out there like Smiffy from The Bill, the Police Community Support Officers (PCSO) and Specials are another option to get you into the operational policing side of things. There’s always the need for more Specials and this role gives you the chance to spice up your existing working life by donating some time to the police with the agreement of your employer. To be a Special you need to volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours a week or 16 hours a month, you get 13 weeks intensive training (on Sundays) so you’re fully prepared to hit the beat and your expenses are paid. At the end of it you have the same powers as a full time police officer, so unlike the PCSOs you have the warrant of arrest. Being a Special means you get time out from the day job to better yourself and the city while your employer gets all the benefits of effectively having a police officer on site every day. So suddenly things like internal thefts drop and there’s someone readily available who’s pretty handy when it comes to dealing with any serious incidents. Pretty soon
the rules on the number of hours you have to do could change giving employers more flexibility to help staff who want to become a Special. Shahina Ahmed the Specials co-ordinator for Cambridgeshire police says – “Specials often go on to become fantastic full time police officers because they’re such ideal candidates for the job. The fact they’re volunteering their time shows they have passion for the job, they know the real problems in their neighbourhoods and are someone who really cares about their community. They come from all walks of life and are more representative of the diverse communities we now have. We want them to join the full time force and you can fast track through from the Specials.” The Special constables play an invaluable role supporting the Neighbourhood Policing Teams and add visibility with more coppers being seen on the beat which can’t be bad… fancy a little more action? Then break free from the 9 to 5 and sign up. All jobs in the police are advertised on their website, just download an application form online or ring the recruitment department for more information.

Caught in th THE PAPARAZZI CREW HIT VERVE, THE GRAPEVINE, SOLSTICE AND BAR CUBA! The ESP Paparazzi crew hit the centre of Peterborough and plenty of you were caught in the act having a good time! Pep and his lens lovelies, Becca, Susan and Sadie kicked off their mini-tour of the Boro with a visit to The Grapevine. The former HGs building has been given a subtle make-over which has helped transform it into a 'traditional' pub complete with a good selection of home cooked food. It's early days for The Grapevine but it promises to be a popular watering hole in the coming months, which will be helped by the removal of the Corn Exchange building paving way for plenty of inviting open space in its vicinity. Next stop was Verve, which we’re delighted to see is still open and we’re told will be for the foreseeable future. Verve continues to serve food and drinks for nearby office workers by day (in a popular beer garden when the sun's out!) and by night there's always a DJ mixing away to have a good boogie to. On September 4 it’ll be the Locality crew and on September 5 rock/pop band the Axe Girls. The Solstice was next on the trail for Pep and the girls and there were plenty of revellers all game for posing in a photo as per usual! The Lounge was chilled while the carnage of partying and dancing was taking place next door. The Solstice has been open for years and never fails to reel in the crowds. Keep up the good work guys. Last stop on the whistle-stop tour was Bar Cuba at Latinis. This venue is fast becoming the most popular 'in crowd' place to be seen at and it's no surprise with a cocktail menu as mouthwatering as theirs! Pep's, we're informed was a Mojito, while the girls sipped sweet and sticky cherry and passion fruit concoctions. And then came the shots...
VIEW PAPARAZZI ONLINE Remember all our Paparazzi photos, even those that we just can’t squeeze into the mag, go up on our fantastic new website www.espmag.co.uk so you can see who’s been caught in the act of having a great time! Little Boots is stepping out on tour to ‘remedy’ our autumn blues. Sharon McAllister chats to pop’s latest hot property…
little Boots
As I grab a word with Victoria Hesketh (AKA Little Boots) over the phone she’s a little distracted making her way through the airport ready to jet off for a weekend of yet more festivals. She’s already clocked up over 30, including Glastonbury, and the rollercoaster isn’t slowing. Armed with a cappuccino she’s mutli-tasking her way through the likes of airport security with media interviews lined up all the way.
ESPCELEBS
celebs@espmag.co.uk
“I’m really looking forward to it. I can be more creative, have more props and costumes, more people on stage. I really like to get involved with the audience and give a good delivery.” Having already topped the Sound of 2009 poll on the BBC Victoria was soon booked into the Live Lounge with Jo Whiley and as well as singing ‘Remedy’ live the cover version she chose was none other than local lad Aston Merrygold’s track ‘Beat Again’ by JLS.
“It’s been a busy year but all good fun,” she tells me, “I guess you’ve just got to hit it head on. All this would be strange for anyone really, but I don’t really see it as work.”
“I had to choose from something current and that was the best option, it’s a good little pop song. They were one of my favourites on X Factor.”
“Glastonbury was one,” she tells me, “and Japan was really great. Getting to travel and experience new things is fantastic. Being on the Jonathan Ross show was great – I’d met him before on his radio show and he’s lovely.”
www.espmag.co.uk ( September )
If you’ve been won over by her catchy single ‘Remedy’ or seen her YouTube airings you’ll be keen to see the Little Boots live experience. Her forthcoming ‘Skull of Dreams’ headline tour heads our way in October with a show at The Junction in Cambridge on October 29.
Little Boots is hot property at the moment and has been caught up in such a whirlwind she hasn’t had time to even consider getting nervous about anything, although I get the feeling she has a pretty chilled out attitude to it all.
Victoria’s been all over the radio and TV appearing on Radio One, Jonathan Ross and Later with Jools Holland, but if you’ve been out on the live scene at all you’ll no doubt have caught this synth-pop princess in action. Out of dozens of festivals so far I wonder if there’s been a highlight or if it’s already blurred into one.
36
At the age of 25 she seems to be taking all the media buzz in her stride and is already mingling with the stars but she says she’s not really the star struck type – “Not really, I guess it would be more likely to be something silly like someone from Hollyoaks or something who I’d get excited about. Although I’ve met Annie Lennox and she’s a legend so that was pretty cool.”
As she moves from live appearance to press interview to one TV show after another being under the spotlight so intensely and so quickly must be a little daunting surely? But again Victoria has a mature outlook on it all – “It’s just chatting to people really, if you put aside all the nonsense we’re all just people aren’t we?” Victoria’s been playing keyboards since she was tiny, progressing to the synthesiser as a teenager and despite being born in 1984 cites the likes of Bowie, Human League and Georgio Moroder as influences. She started her journey into the world of pop at the age of 16 when she auditioned for Pop Idol (but admits it was just one audition!) then later appeared on the scene with Dead Disco before deciding on her solo route.
So with this meteoric rise is there any likelihood she’ll soon be asking for ridiculous riders and throwing diva tantrums? “There’s no danger of that,” she assures me. When she reveals she likes gardening, grows her own veg and her essential item to take away with her are her slippers, she admits she’s not exactly sounding rock ‘n’ roll! Ms Boots it seems is also a little brainier than you’d expect your average pop star to be and being a musician isn’t her only talent. Having gained top grades in her ‘A’ levels and gaining a first class honours in her degree it sounds like she’s set to make school cool for a new generation of pop fans. “Yeah I’m a bit of a swat. I just geek out on things and want to become better and know more about things like my instruments.” So as she gets set to disappear through the boarding gates to catch her plane is there any chance of chilling when she returns from her whistlestop tour of Austria, Belgium and Holland? “Actually I’m moving house… and then things get mad again with the tour.” Little Boots’ single ‘Remedy’ and her debut album ‘Hands’ are out now on 679/Atlantic. www.littlebootsmusic.co.uk

LOCALFOOD
NEW MENU TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY EAST For fine dining by the river, East has always been in a class of its own. Now with a new menu just launched it’s time to tantalise your taste buds with more gorgeous flavours from southeast Asia. Beautifully presented on white porcelain the visual feast for the eyes is equalled by the flavours which truly give you a taste of the Orient. From seven spiced squid from Japan to sake scallops and king prawns the new range of dishes will certainly give your palate the chance to explore the succulent spices of the Far East. The presentation of dishes like the Chu Chi King Prawns (£10.95) and the Mieng Kana (£4.95) – a platter of fresh ginger, lemon grass, chilli, shallots, shallots, shrimp, crispy pork rind and peanuts served on a bed of spring greens with caramelised palm sugar and roasted coconut sauce will delight you to look at and give equal pleasure when you try them. The pineapple rice with turmeric sauce, prawns, chicken and pineapple chunks (£5.95) is
ideal for sharing and a fabulously tasty alternative to try instead of your usual rice dish. We sampled a stunning selection of the new dishes which provided just a flavour of the extensive menu and would happily recommend them all! If you haven’t visited for a while make a return visit just as soon as you can. Despite the luxurious feel to East, dining out doesn’t have to be just a luxury. The average price of a dish is just £6.95 and with £10 Tuesdays you can enjoy a starter, main course with rice and vegetables for just that! Word has spread about the fabulous East Sunday buffets too, at £8.95 it’s an affordable treat.
Apart from that where else can you also enjoy a pint from Oakham Ales while you dine? Surely that has to encourage the guys to do the decent thing and treat their better half to a meal with style! Whether you want to dine outdoors in the garden, celebrate an occasion or want to book somewhere for your Christmas meal we’d recommend you head East.
Upper deck, Charters, Town Bridge, Peterborough
You can even escape the lunchbox and the soggy sarnie at lunchtimes and de-stress out of the office. Settle back in fresh bright surroundings and share a mixed starter as the swans glide past and you’ll be transported out of the city limits within minutes!

MR PANGS CHINESE RESTAURANT

22 Main Street, Woodnewton Tel: 01780 470944
What better way is there to treat your boyfriend or girlfriend on their birthday, than to take them down to their favourite restaurant to enjoy their favourite cuisine? I treated my boyfriend to the best Chinese in Stamford, Mr Pangs. The restaurant itself has such a lovely atmosphere, with tables positioned around a beautiful indoor pond and fairy lit blossom tree. You have so much choice on the menu that there’s nothing they have to offer that you wouldn’t enjoy. Each dish is no more than £9.00, which meant my boyfriend and I spent no more than £20 each! Whilst you dine, you can also enjoy one of the many alcoholic beverages they have to offer at the bar. We started off the meal with some sticky barbecue spare ribs to share – how romantic? Quite messy though, as it’s not something you can easily eat with cutlery (or chop sticks!). We then indulged in our favourite Chinese dishes – sweet ‘n’ sour chicken, chicken chow mein and a side dish of rice. The most generous portions ever may I add, and there was nothing left on the plate!
Surprisingly for a Saturday night, the restaurant was fairly quiet, but sometimes that’s preferable to the hustle and bustle of the city centre. A lawned area outside meant we made the most of the sunshine and relaxed with a pint of real ale before moving inside to eat.
So if you feel like going for a nice romantic meal, head down to Mr Pangs, you won’t be disappointed.
We tried the tasty goat’s cheese and caramelised tartlet for starters, then we had sea bass with ratatouille and chicken pesto salad respectively. I must make comment on the best chips and sauté potatoes we’ve had for ages – gorgeous!
They also have a buffet on Sundays, where you pay no more than £10 and eat all you like.
Go on, get out to the country!

Still feeling like we could fit a bit more in, we decided to have dessert. I chose the chocolate/ caramel/ toffee loaded pudding, whilst my boyfriend decided to go for the more refreshing option of orange sorbet – a whole orange filled with the most delightful tasting sorbet!

There’s something particularly appealing about a country inn on a balmy summer’s evening, and the White Swan at Woodnewton certainly ticked that box. OK, it’s a little way out, but the food was absolutely spot on and we had no complaints about the service either.

Green Watch to Neighbourhood Watch... how the fire service are in the ‘hood’! There are some new boys (and girls) in the ‘hood: the Neighbourhood Management Team. Firefighters who are also playing their part in dealing with the community’s burning issues not just fighting fires.
“We didn’t use to have the contact,” says Tony, “but now we’re proactively going out there, visiting schools and events such as this and going along to group meetings to see what help we can offer.
As part of the Neighbourhood Management Team, Tony Fitzjohn is the firefighting face of Central Ward where it’s his job to work closely with the community and work hand in hand with the local beat officers, community representatives, youth workers, councillors and a host of others. Bringing everyone together as a team and working in partnership with local people means they’re tackling problems from all angles.
“It’s the interaction, getting the chance to speak to people, we used to be met by more closed doors but now there’s an understanding and we have the respect.
“It’s about creating a focal point so you have the same person working a particular patch and getting to grips with that area’s issues,” says Tony’s operations manager Martin Boome. “Arson might be a big problem in one part of Peterborough, while road accidents might be a bigger issue elsewhere or house fires in another. Each area needs a different approach to its specific problems.” At a Gladstone Park funday, watch manager and firefighter Tony Fitzjohn chats to local kids as they explore the fire engine eagerly asking questions, before he joins them in a game of footy. It’s this type of community interaction he says is making all the difference in getting safety messages across.

“Long term I hope this work will help reduce fire related incidents and make Central Ward a safer place. By being more proactive we’re already seeing results. Property fires were a big problem in the area but education is working. Hoax calls were also a big issue but now the message is getting out there to kids that it won’t be tolerated and even 10 year-olds can be prosecuted. “Road accidents are also an issue and we’ve been working with the New Link Centre to help educate newcomers to the area about seatbelt safety.” Members of the Neighbourhood Management Panels across Peterborough share information so if a health worker makes a visit to a house and spots there’s no smoke alarm for instance, they might recommend the fire service drop by and give a free home safety check. If the school holidays usually mean the likelihood of hoax calls or small fires
increase in an area then the fire service go to the school and give a talk on the consequences or invite the kids over to the fire station. Everyone working together should mean Peterborough’s a safer and healthier place to be so get in touch with your local Neighbourhood Management officer to discuss any worries or to book them in for some fire safety tips… DOGSTHORPE FIRE STATION: 01733 353206 Tony Fitzjohn Steve Duffy Jon Wade

Vol. 1, Issue 1 (No. 1)
Peterborough actor David is making us ‘Proud’ as he hits Albert Square and heads East… Hey, has this town got talent or what?! Turn your TV on this month and tune into EastEnders and you’ll see yet another Peterborough guy on the box. Actor David Proud will make his first appearance in the soap at the beginning of September as new character Adam Best, Manda’s student son who arrives in Walford during the holidays. The 26 year-old former student at Sir Harry Smith’s has lived in the city all his life and is the latest in a line of young guns like Luke Pasqualino, Aston Merrygold and Louis Smith who are helping put Peterborough well and truly on the map. Of course David already has one familiar face on set as he joins yet another Peterborough actor, Himesh Patel who plays brainy Tamwar Masood in the series. “It’s great having that Peterborough link,” David told ESP. “We can chat about places we know. He’s a lovely guy and we’ve been joking around and having some fun together.” David’s already had a taste of TV fame appearing alongside Billie Piper in ‘Diary of a Call Girl’ and ‘Desperados’ as well as the film ‘Special People’ but clinching a role in the soap is the big break he’s been waiting for. “Out of the blue I got a call from my agent back in June… It’s been a bit of a whirlwind but a nice one! It’s been a long journey to get here but you have to build your career slowly.” Himesh Patel has had plenty of time to settle into the show but David says Himesh and the rest of the cast have made him very welcome. “All the cast have been lovely – they know what it’s like to be the new boy and really look after you.

I’ve had loads of support, it really is like a big family. They all love what they do and it’s a really nice atmosphere on set.” David’s character is said to be self-possessed and a little snobbish, with a low opinion of his mother's boyfriend, Minty. “There’s one word I’d use to describe Adam,” says David “and that’s ‘spikey!’” Sparks could fly as he takes a shine to Libby Fox, another prospective Oxford University student – and Darren Miller's girlfriend. “He stirs things up and takes a shine to Libby,” says David. “He’s a very, very strong character and interesting to play as he really has an edge to him.” Like most people David’s grown up watching EastEnders at various points in his life so he’s still pinching himself now as he looks at the set of Albert Square. “Phil and Grant were a really strong part of it when I was first watching so to be working with Steve McFadden now is unbelievable. “The most amazing thing is that there are some incredible actors on the show and to learn from them is just incredible. As an actor you never stop learning. I really don’t take it for granted – it’s a dream come true.” Albert Square has seen a number of disabled characters over the years, but the BBC say this will
be the first time a regular disabled part will be played by a disabled actor. David is delighted to have this chance and sees it as a positive move by the soap – “It can only have a positive influence. You’re seeing more and more disabled characters played by disabled actors and I think it’s a point we had to get to. We’re actually ahead of America and we’re showing disabled people in the right way.” There’s never long to learn your lines in a frequently aired soap so how does he cope? “Well I did a play with a seven page monologue where I was on stage for half an hour which panicked me quite a lot, so comparatively this isn’t quite as bad!” Will we lose him to the big city now he’s set to be a big TV star? “I’m living on the A1 going up and down to London at the moment but I’d rather travel to work and be nearer family and friends than relocate. I have some great friends in Peterborough and they really keep me grounded.”
FIRST CAR OR FIRST KISS? We all remember our first love. Our first kiss (well, maybe). And it seems our first car is just as memorable. Apparently 97 per cent of us will never forget our first car, with 90 percent rating it more memorable than their first love or first kiss. And according to the survey by used car buying website www.motors.co.uk two thirds of us even had pet names for those cars which were seen as a rite of passage. ESP asked some local celebs whether their first kiss or their first car made the biggest impression…
JAMES GORNALL Local racing driver “My first car was a Ford Orion 1.6 EFI Ghia. “It was far more memorable than any of those boring things you speak of! From age 10 I was counting down the time until my 17th birthday, and when I finally got it I spent all of my time and money on it.
SAAB ARE CELEBRATING IN THE BORO The world may be struggling but one Peterborough business is beating the credit crunch, and helping us stay on the road at the same time. The champagne corks have been popping at Marshall dealership, which marked its sixth month as a Saab franchise with a big rise in used car sales, and a large growth in service and after-sales business. It has also taken on ten new staff in the same period. Dealer principal Alan Wensak revealed some of the secrets of their success. “Our team of Saab specialists are not only enthusiastic about the brand and its impressive range of cars, but also work exceptionally hard to ensure that each time a customer visits us, be it for sales or service, that their experience is as positive and enjoyable as possible,” he said. “This approach has clearly translated into genuine business results with an improvement in both turnover and profit.” To find out more about any of the cars in the Saab range, or to arrange a test drive, visit Marshall of Peterborough on Tyrrell Park, Boongate, Peterborough, call 08442 437519 or click on www.marshallsaab.co.uk
IT’S A CHARITY ‘DEAL ON WHEELS’ AS MARSHALL PEUGEOT CELEBRATE 100 YEARS! The Marshall group is celebrating its centenary year this year and Shaun Pluck and his sales team at Marshall Peugeot in Boongate are holding a special local charity sales event between September 11 and 14. Shaun told ESP – “There are not too many companies who can celebrate being in business for so long and the only reason why we’ve been successful over the years is because of our great customer support. I’ve always been keen on local businesses supporting local people as local people support local business in return. What we want to do is give something back to the community over the sales event, so for every new car sold over that weekend, Marshall Peugeot will donate £100 to a local charity! It’s a great opportunity for customers to pick up a fantastic deal on a new 59 plate whilst we give something back to our community. It’s our way of saying a big thank you for all your support other the years!” If you fancy attending and grabbing yourself some new wheels and doing a good deed at the same time, just call Marshall Peugeot on 0844 334 0713 for more details.

“The car was pretty fast for a first timer, more exciting than a small car, and I loved the sounds it made after ruining it with a new exhaust and stereo! I'm not sure if I’ve grown up since then!”
ABBY SURGEON Heart breakfast show presenter “I have to say I agree with the poll… My first kiss wasn’t very memorable at all, his name was Rob Penson and he was about a foot shorter than me! Ha ha ha! However my first car was my baby, it was a white Fiesta that my nan and granddad bought me. It ended up having my whole life in it from changes of clothes, make-up and shoes… you never know when you might need them when out on the road!”
KEV LAWRENCE Heart breakfast show presenter “My first car was a two-tone grey 2CV Charleston. The engine was so tiny that up-hill it was often a case of ‘can you get out and give it a push please’ to any passengers. But the roof came off in the summer, and it was such a big deal aged 18 to be mobile! “Thinking about the car brings back great memories, with Prince blasting out of the tape-deck, and all my mates on their mopeds being well jealous. “As for my first kiss? Kathy Blacker, behind the bike shed at school, aged about 14. She told me I was a rubbish kisser, and as I remember, it was one of the scariest moments of my life. I prefer to think about my first car.”
GARY BALL Lite FM breakfast show presenter “My first car was a very forgettable blue Ford Escort MK 1. I’d just passed my test and paid £60 for it. I thought it was the best car in the world and decided to paint (using emulsion) a big white strip down the side. I fitted it with bucket seats and a sports steering wheel and a stereo that was worth more than the car. “I’d just met a girl two days before buying it and told her I would take her around all the sites in London at the weekend. All was going well until my new car broke down outside Buckingham Palace. It was back in the day before mobiles so we abandoned it to find a pay phone. By the time we got back, the car had been towed away and we had to get the train home. I never did get the car back and the girl... I never saw her again!”
PERFECT TEN ‌ SUCCESS STORIES
Martin Adams PROFESSIONAL DARTS PLAYER
Martin 'Wolfie' Adams has been a professional darts player since 1995 and has lived in Deeping St James for 25 years.
... Next month we catch up with another local success story. 46
www.espmag.co.uk ( September )
He's won both of the major darts tournaments that are shown on the BBC: The BDO World Championships at Lakeside Surrey (2007) and the Winmau World Masters in Yorkshire (2008). In September he returns to defend his World Masters title and also captain England at the Darts World Cup in the USA. ESP's Steve Gonzalez caught up with the darts legend…
The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.
Martin, what's your earliest memory of playing darts? “The first time I remember playing darts must've been when I was about 13 or 14 with my cousin Fred. He had a dartboard in his bedroom and he taught me the basic rules and it went on from there.” You've had an incredible career in darts. World Champion, No 1 in the rankings, England captain and most capped England player of all time. What's been your favourite moment? “Winning the World Championship at Lakeside in 2007. No doubt about it. I had a nice 54 to finish on, two darts, 14 then tops. Thank you very much. I'd been competing at the World Championships for 14 years so to finally win it was fantastic. Happy days!” You make it sound so easy, but I remember watching it on TV and you went 6-0, needed one more set and then Phil Nixon who you were playing won six in a row and it went to a final set. (He laughs) “Yeah it was a bit of an 'epic'. At the end of the day you just try and raise your game and find the motivation. I didn't plan to go 6-0 up and then let him back in, but I knew that if I didn't win the wife would kill me! By the end of it Sharon couldn't watch and had hidden in the toilets. Someone from the BBC had to get her!” And of course you followed it up last year by winning the Winmau World Masters. How are you preparing to defend it?

“The World Masters is a different format to the Lakeside, it's over two days instead of nine and the matches are shorter. Normally I'll start preparing for it properly a couple of weeks before, whereas with Lakeside it's normally a month. I play against the computer in my practice room which you can programme to a high level. It can beat me, but I beat it more often than not.” Your walk on music at tournaments is Duran Duran’s ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’. Have you ever met the band? “Er, in a word ‘No’. I don’t think we drink at the same pubs (laughs). It was Sharon’s idea to use the song, and it’s edited together with a ‘wolf’ howl at the beginning. When I practice at home I normally have a bit of music on, either CDs or the radio.” Elvis by any chance ? “Oh yeah, gotta have a bit of Elvis! That and Radio 2, but not Radio 1, they give it too much bunny.” What sort of response do you get from people locally to your career? “Oh it's been fantastic. You don't realise the power that little box in the corner of the room can have on people (the TV). When you love doing something and you can see people responding to that it's quite phenomenal really. When I'm out and about or down the shops people will always come over and have a quick word. I think it's important for local people to have someone winning or doing well at sport. I remember a lady came and knocked on my door once with her daughter who'd just got a little puppy and she named it 'Wolfie' after me! I couldn't believe it.” You're also captaining England in the USA at the Darts World Cup at the end of September. How do you rate your chances? “Very good. I think we'll be favourites based on the world rankings but it's all on the day. During the last World Cup in the Netherlands we won the four man team event by beating the Dutch, but they won the overall trophy as they did better than us in the singles and pairs. “The last time the World Cup was in America was Las Vegas in 1993, this time it's in Charlotte, North Carolina. I've not played there before, but I'm looking forward to it.” The Winmau World Masters start on BBC1 on Saturday September 6. Check your TV guide for times.

SCREENSCENE DISTRICT 9 Released: September 4 Starring: A cast of unknowns. Director: Neill Blomkamp Fledgling director Neill Blomkamp shines in his big-screen debut under the expert production tutelage of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ guru Peter Jackson. This sci-fi thriller – which has been shrouded in ‘Cloverfield’-esque secrecy – is already being touted as a genre classic, and notched an impressive $37m opening weekend at the US box office. The Johannesburg slums become a haven for a seemingly harmless race of aliens who appeared in the atmosphere above the South African city twenty years earlier, but now government patience is wearing thin with the advanced alien weaponry firmly in its sights. Previous attempts to unlock the technology – which is integrated with the extra-terrestrial biology – has proved unsuccessful until a field operative (Sharlto Copley) gets infected with alien DNA, making him the most desired man on the planet. Described as a technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching piece of cinema that combines action, imagination and genuine smarts – with an underlying message of discrimination close to the film’s roots – ‘District 9’ is set to ignite the autumn. Brit star Gerard Butler (‘300’) gets his first headlining Hollywood breakthrough in this sci-fi thriller – where sadistic fantasies throw people into a fight-to-the-death virtual experience – as gaming entertainment evolves into a terrifying new hybrid.
The premise may indicate another ‘The Hangover’ type lads’ comedy (even though early reviews suggest otherwise), as a young man awakes from a four-year coma to see his once virginal high-school sweetheart has become a naked centrefold in Playboy.
Oscar winner Meryl Streep and Amy Adams (‘Enchanted’) re-team (after starring in acclaimed drama ‘Doubt’) as two famous memoirs are intertwined in this purported charming culinary comedy from ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ helmer Nora Ephron.

Game On ASHES CRICKET 2009 (X360/PS3/WII/PC) Out Now
By now you’ll know if England triumphed in the final Ashes test, but whatever happened the best next-gen cricket game can help you re-live another pulsating series.

HARRY POTTER & THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE
(WII/X360/PS3/DS/PSP) Out Now What was I saying about movie tie-ins? At least this is comfortably better than GI Joe.
Codemasters has delivered an incredibly authentic and simplistically intuitive game which features the licensed players and stadia of the Australia series – complete with test, one-day and T20 versions of the sport. Hawk-Eye adds another exciting dimension to play, and you can also tackle other (though unlicensed) nations before you
This fun, though slightly flawed, modern update doesn’t try to compete with the scripted genre-definers – but provides a straightforward gun-toting, Nazi-killing romp that does exactly what it says on the tin. Great battles, impressive weaponry, noteworthy online play and a cool supernatural ‘veil sight’ mode, helps keep
Fans have little choice by going for these yearly tweaked versions, and with a backto-basics approach – which sacrifices some of the game’s gloss – the latest instalment improves on last year. The addition of the ‘Pro-Tak’ tackling system, online franchise mode and a much improved user interface, helps outshine
Movie tie-ins have a dreadful reputation anyway but this GI Joe game is years out of date – and unfortunately looks it. It has the feel of great early 90s hits such as ‘Ikari Warriors’ and ‘Contra’, but as a nextgen title that doesn’t cut-it – with repetitive gameplay, nightmarish camera mechanism and awful targeting/vehicle controls.
Already available as individual DLC on Xbox Live, the Capital Wastelandprolonging ‘Broken Steel’ – in which the level cap is raised to thirty as you take out the remaining pockets of Enclave resistance – and the Maryland-based swamp-ridden, inbred-infested, alternative world of ‘Point Lookout’ are both sensational five-star expansions in their own right.
In his sixth outing fans will enjoy controlling their hero in the faithfully recreated Hogwarts but the bland storyline will wear thin very fast for non-Potter enthusiasts. The graphics for the Wii (as on the other next-gen consoles) are largely impressive, and the presentation to EA’s usual slick standard – but the ‘Half-Blood Prince’

continued lingering problems such as the poor commentary and dodgy defensive AI. But despite these few minor niggles, this is as close to a perfect touchdown an NFL enthusiast will get on a console.
####
Decent cut-scenes and character variety would make it passable for a couple of youngsters in co-op, but it has a ridiculous 16+ rating which nixes that idea. On the flipside the DS version is a better effort as it differs from the supposedly superior formats

A HUGHES LOSS TO COMEDY
Last month I was saddened to hear the news that American film writer and director John Hughes had died at the age of 59. If you grew up in the 80s and early 90s you would’ve watched, enjoyed and laughed at a lot of his films. ‘National Lampoons Vacation’, ‘The Breakfast Club’, ‘Weird Science’, ‘Pretty in Pink’, ‘Planes Trains & Automobiles’, ‘Uncle Buck’ and ‘Ferris Bueller's Day Off’ have all become 'cult' classics. After the massive success of ‘Home Alone’ in 1990 and the sequel, Hughes drifted out of the film industry and effectively retired. In rare interviews he cited the early death of his friend John Candy as a reason for not wanting to burn himself out. However, in 2008 after years away he came up with the story for ‘Drillbit Taylor' the Judd Apatow film which he wrote under the pseudonym (Edmond Dantes). Sadly it was to be the last film he was involved in, but unlike some American film makers I could mention he didn’t spend his latter years making pointless prequels or ill-advised sequels like ‘Ferris Bueller’s Year Off Claiming Benefits’… Anyway, there isn't enough space to do justice to all the funny film moments Hughes gave us, but here are a few of my favourites.

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
Clark W Griswald (Chevy Chase) takes his family off to visit ‘WalleyWorld’ theme park in LA. After the mother of all family road trips they reach the park only to find it closed for renovation. Chevy punches the park foam mascot 'Marty Moose' on the nose and forces the park guard to open up the rides at gun point.
The ultimate road trip. Steve Martin (when he was funny) and John Candy (when he had a moustache) team up to try and get home for Thanksgiving. The 'car rental' scene sees a crash-course in film swearing by Martin, and the sight of them having to share a bed together in a motel is up there with anything Laurel & Hardy ever did. A brilliantly funny film packed with laughs, warmth and a heartwarming ending.
Weird Science (1985)
The Great Outdoors (1987)
Two adolescent teenage boys using their computer and some copies of Playboy make a real-life woman played by Kelly Le Brock. On her arrival the boys decide they want to have a shower with her, but are too shy to touch her, talk to her or remove any of their clothes below the waist.
Dan Ackroyd and John Candy play brothers who take their familes on a holiday in the rocky mountains. The funniest scene is when Ackroyd hires a massive speedboat with the words 'suck my wake' written down the side and accidentally takes John Candy water-skiing.
National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) The Griswalds win a family holiday to Europe. First stop England where they manage to destroy Stonehenge when Clark reverses into it and it topples like a set of dominos.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) If you've ever pulled a sickie from work or school this film will provide you with unwavering joy. Ferris' idea that you can spend the day driving a Ferrari around and then remove the mileage by running it in reverse still makes me smile.
Uncle Buck (1989) Memorable in so many ways, but mainly for John Candy's deadpan delivery when 8 year-old MacCaulay Culkin delivers a question and answer session to him in the kitchen. Candy also makes a mean breakfast.
Home Alone (1990) Modern slapstick at its best. 'The wet bandits' Joe Pesci and the bloke who did the voiceover on the 'Wonder Years' are no match for Culkin who defends his home against the burglars whilst his family are away. It's Tom & Jerry cartoon violence style, but Joe Pesci getting hit in the face with an iron will always be funny.
Thanks for the memories John and say hello to the Candyman for us.
JOKEOFTHEMONTH "You know when you hear the end of someone’s conversation and you’re imagination goes into overdrive about what they’re talking about? The other day I heard the best one ever. I was on a bus and two guys were talking and one said ‘Not with one leg you ain’t’. When I got home I couldn’t get to sleep that night until I’d created a story that ended with the line ‘Not with one leg you ain’t’. This is what I came up with… “When I was working at the ‘Guinness Book of Records’ a one-legged man came in and said ‘I’m going to set the record for the human being with the most amount of legs’ and I said…” – Carl Donnelly.
JUSTIN LEE COLLINS AT WATERSTONES! TV funny man and hairy Bristolian Justin Lee Collins will be at Waterstones on Bridge Street on September 23 signing copies of his new autobiography called ‘Good Times’. He’ll be there at 1pm and it’s another great coup for the store. If you fancy grabbing yourself a signed copy you can reserve it by giving the store a call on 01733 555323. Manager Anna Elmore told me she’s also trying to get Take That for December. (Not sure if that’s for a book signing or just so she can have them all to herself). Watch this space.

STANDOUTSTANDUP Much of the stand up circuit is still taking a break but Jongleurs will be back at the South Holland Centre in Spalding on October 15. There is of course Jimmy Carr live in two shows at the Cresset on September 5 (tickets £22.50) followed up by Dave Gorman with his ‘Sit Down, Pedal, Pedal, Stop And Stand Up’ tour on September 10. He’s travelling between each of the 32 venues on the tour by pushbike! (Tickets £15). The ESP crew took a trip to the Stamford Arts Centre Comedy Club just before the club took its seasonal break and it was a great night with three acts headlined by none other than Jewish comedy great Sol Bernstein. It’s certainly worth a look when the new season starts so watch this space. Just one thing Stamford Arts guys – can we have tables rather than theatre style seating, pretty please?

That’s it… it’s over for another year, the carnival that is festival season is put to bed and wrapped in cotton wool until spring. All we have to look forward to are dark nights and cold wet days… a bit like the summer then! To be fair I haven’t really thought it’s been that bad, yeah we’ve had shed loads of rain but it’s been warm and the late spring was just glorious.
across a few and they all have the same affect on me, claustrophobia. No more please, a nice bright airy marquee will do.
So what about the highs and lows of my summer spent in fields?
Best Festival A tie for this accolade – Glastonbudget and Cambridge Folk Festival equally as good for different reasons. Glastonbudget was fun all the way and made even better by the 20 or so friends that made it that much more special. Thanks guys it was a blast, especially the camp site antics. Cambridge surprised me this year, the bands were great the crowd seemed less, well, crowded and not quite as tetchy as last year. Seeing Booker T was a privilege and finding Imelda May was a joy! Cheers Sean I owe you a meal.
Best Idea www.musicdating.com. Stop it now children, this is quite a good idea. Not your normal dating service full of fat bald men who pretend to be Johnny Depp or psycho women who talk with a venomous rasp, but a site for live music lovers. Basically create your profile stating favourite bands and what type of music you like - and people with the same taste contact you and you go from there. Simples! As their strapline says – ‘mate, date or fate’ – no more going to gigs on your own, you can hook up with other people who like the same stuff as you, great idea.
woodland walks filled with WW2 nostalgia and the best loos and showers bar none. As the sun sets you can almost feel the presence of Glenn Miller’s orchestra belting out ‘Moonlight Serenade’ as you wander between the stages. Magical.
4 programme and teenagers were stood at the front with mouths gaping and eyes wide thinking “what the f*** is this?” The old boy can still do it.
It also has a cracking bar and terrace area. (The music’s good too!)
Bug Jam. Fields full of chavs playing repetitive crap dance music from their equally crap VW Jettas and Seat Leons at all hours of the day, even at 8.30am Sunday morning (Tracy told me to put the hammer down and walk away from the Burberry cap…) Also, if that wasn’t enough, Dodgy headlined… never again, and we have a VW!
Worst Sound Sorry guys, indoors at De Montfort Hall and main stage De Montfort Hall. It was all over the place for The Levellers at Big Session and the same for The Beat at Summer Sundae. Outdoors fared no better with various bands battling the sound men, maybe it was just a blip this year, let’s hope so.
Worst Festival
Weirdest Thing Silent Disco. Go in a marquee, put on head phones, tune into one of two DJs and dance! The DJs are on stage so you can even punch the air when they do. I was hoping for a bit of Abba and Tavares and Heatwave mind but still, good fun and a strange experience.
Imelda May
Friendliest Staff I know I’ve been harping on about it all summer but the De Montfort Hall staff win hands down. All of them go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. If Carlsberg made stewards and policemen…
Worst Idea Big Tops… as in tent circus style big tops. OK, it’s brilliant sunshine outside and you go in the tent and bang, straight into a dank dark dungeon of an atmosphere that often stinks of stale sweat and mud as well. Not the best addition to the festival experience. I’ve come

Cantaloop, Martin Harley Band, Imelda May (sorry Rebecca) Susan Tedeschi Tommy Womack and Morph. Google or Myspace them, all well worth a listen.
Best Act Best Site Twinwood Arena Bedford the Rhythm Festival site. A natural bowl for the main bit, glorious rolling hills as a backdrop, atmospheric
Without doubt Neil Young Hyde Park, a master class in snarling cool. Mark Betts, he of Setting Sons fame, told me that he watched bits of it on some Channel
So we did it – about 10 festivals no broken bones and not one person or animal injured in the process, well apart from a few crushed wasps… until next year as they say.

LIVEMUSIC SUNDAY UNITED ULTRA GREAT GIG Eighties music fans will be ultra pleased to hear Midge Ure is returning to the city with a gig at the Cresset on November 26. The respected musician, producer and songwriter Midge Ure, best known as the lead singer in ‘80s pop band Ultravox, has brought us hits such as ‘Vienna’, ‘Dancing With Tears In My Eyes’ and ‘Love’s Great Adventure’. He also notched up hits as a solo artist – most notably ‘Breathe’, ‘If I Was and ‘No Regrets’. He went on to famously produce the Band Aid hit ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ in November 1984 – a song he co-wrote with Bob Geldof as the music industry’s contribution to Ethiopian famine relief. In his career Midge has collected armfuls of coveted awards – among them a Grammy and an Ivor Novello – plus a plethora of gold and platinum discs. Now he’s touring the UK with his live acoustic shows – treating audiences to some of his most famous hits as well as new songs from his repertoire. Fans should not miss this chance to see a real musical legend performing live. Tickets to his show, which starts at 8pm, cost £16. Box office: 01733 265705.

Since the band formed they’ve built up a big following which has been earned off the back of some tight and always entertaining shows. You can expect to hear some great versions of music from genres such as, ska, punk, mod, brit pop, indie and much more! So if you really enjoy jumping, singing and dancing about to a great band, then get along to O'Neill's www.thereplicasband.co.uk

SUN SHINES ON THE CANDLE THIEVES The intriguingly named ‘Glock’ from the Candle Thieves tells us their first EP called 'The Sunshine EP' is out on September 14 on a small indie label called Alcopop. It's a little introduction to the Candle Thieves and is released to coincide with a 'Live In Your Garden' tour they’re playing at the moment. Glock told ESP – “We did a 'Live In Your Living Room' tour last summer and had so much fun we decided to take it to people's gardens. We've been blessed with sunshine for all bar one gig so far which is ace! ”We made a video for ‘The Sunshine Song’ which is the lead song from the forthcoming EP. It's kind of half animated and half live cardboard cut outs of us. ”It's just our first release so we're really excited but we've recorded an album 'Sunshine & Other Misfortunes' which we're looking at putting out later in the year.”
Perfect for a chilled out Sunday afternoon, the Unity Acoustic Lounge returns to Goodbarn’s Yard on September 12. Loads of acoustic artists will be taking to the stage to help ease you through the hangover, and there’s normally a good crowd too. Unity host a band night there every Friday too, with ‘The Scene is Dead’ performing on September 4.
STEALER LINE-UP CHANGE I hear that due to other musical commitments Lee Dash has decided to step aside from his drumming role with the band. Being one of the most experienced drummers in the area and all-round nice guy, the rest of the band knew Lee would be a hard act to replace but Stealer are very pleased to announce Lee's replacement is none other than Jeff Rich who has a fine musical pedigree.
Jeff’s played drums professionally for many years including stints with The Climax Blues Band, Stretch and Judie Tzuke, but is best known for being with Status Quo for fourteen years. Jeff is currently rehearsing with the band and will be gigging with them from this month.
BOOGIE WITH THE BIG BOYS The blues come to Bourne when Big Boy Bloater and his band storm the Corn Exchange on October 3.One of the UK’s best-loved acts, he mixes breakneck blues, boogie and rock ‘n’ roll to an electrifying effect, with support from his rather talented band. He recently played a session on Mark Lamarr’s Radio 2 show, leaving the quiffed comedian to state – “I love this band, Bloater is a phenomenal guitarist!” More used to playing big cities and big venues, don’t miss your chance to catch Big Boy Bloater this close to home. Tickets £8. Box office: Deeping Travel (Bourne) or Simon on 07828 032241.
Check them out live at the Met Lounge on October 2 or find out more on Facebook and www.myspace.com/ thecandlethieves

PHANTOMS LAUNCH INTO NEW SEASON Photos: Paul Young - Nene Digital
Looking for thrills this season? Head to the ice hockey and you’ll be hooked. Mark Shaw talks to the Phantoms ice hockey team who are at the top of their game… “We’ve got three trophies and we’re not rushing to give them away.”
means most fans are relaxed about the season ahead.
That’s the confident declaration from the Peterborough Phantoms as the treble winners prepare to return to the ice.
“But we’re not un-ambitious – we will be in the mix, that’s for sure. We’ve got three trophies and we’re not rushing to give them away.”
Last season saw the city club become the first ever team to claim the English premier league, EPL cup and play-off crown in one season, sweeping their rivals aside with an exciting, attacking game.
The Phantoms’ success has brought with it plenty of attention from wanted – and unwanted – admirers, leading to changes in personnel on and off the ice.
Club spokesman Paul Young revealed – “It’s a very strange feeling to have at the moment because last year was something that none of us could have ever dreamed of.
Last season’s top scorer Nathan Rempel is among the departures, but fans favourite Dwayne Newman has stayed put and is joined by new arrivals Jason Cassells, Tom Carlon, Nick Compton and Alex Symonds.
“Even if we’d only won the league – that would’ve been beyond our wildest dreams. To win all three trophies in a season was something not many people expected to see in their lifetimes.
Paul told ESP – “It’s year one of re-building. We’ve lost a few players but we’ve brought some new ones in. “We’ve had a huge amount of attention – and so we’ve lost some of our headline players. We also had some talented youngsters who deserved the chance to step up. And it would’ve been wrong of us to make someone like Craig Peacock stay. But player for player we’re no worse off.” The biggest change at the Peterborough Arena is the departure of the main man, the vastly experienced coach Colin Patterson, who’s been replaced by Doug Irwin, a name new to English ice hockey, but someone who’s spent several seasons in head coach roles in the professional leagues of Germany and Italy.

“We felt it was likely we would lose the coach, who was a key person,” Paul revealed.
“We can’t reasonably expect to match that, which
POSH NEW ARRIVAL TOMMY ROWE Posh welcomed a number of new arrivals over the summer after back to back promotions took them to the Championship. ESP’S Mark Shaw caught up with one of them –Tommy Rowe – to see how he’s settling in at London Road following his arrival from Stockport… “It has gone really well so far. The lads have made me feel really welcome and I have really enjoyed it. My girlfriend and I have moved down here and the lads seem to have taken to me. I am really enjoying it. “The first game of the season at Derby was a great experience, not just the game but the whole day. We played really well for the last hour, which was something we took a lot of positives from.”

What kind of player are you? “I am a left sided player and like to play high up the field, getting crosses and shots in. The gaffer put me on the right wing in the first game and I enjoyed it.” Why did you decide to come here? “Obviously there were problems at Stockport, but they didn’t affect me too much and I had another two years left at the club. But when the chance came to come to a club like Peterborough and play in the Championship, I couldn’t turn it down. The gaffer was another big attraction.”
What are your personal ambitions for the season? “I don’t really like to set targets, but I just want to do as well as I can. I want to play as many games as possible. I want to work hard and score as many goals as I can.” How well do you think the team can do? “We have some brilliant players here and I really think we can kick on. I know we won’t get relegated – we just have to kick on and see how far we can go.”

LOCALSPORT Kerry’s WAG’S “Colin had suggested that he’d need to spend some time back home in Canada with his elderly parents this year. “The coach is key. Doug Irwin is very highly regarded and we’re delighted to have him on board but he’s new to the UK and we have no idea how quickly things are going to work out. He could hit the ground running, we just don’t know. The club’s hoping last season’s fantastic achievements will lead to more people following the Phantoms, but they acknowledge that they’ll always be overshadowed by their footballing neighbours. “It’s still a minority sport in Peterborough. Even with all the recent success, we’ve had to play second fiddle to the Posh during what’s been a fantastic two seasons for them,” Paul explained. “It’s sod’s law that when we had our greatest ever season Posh were having one of theirs too.

Kerry Bates our former Face of ESP, and other half of one Chris Whelpdale, takes a bird’s eye view of footy life and the fortunes of The Posh… For me, I can sadly say my summer is well and truly over. Not that I can complain, as the last three months of my life have been very ‘interesting’ to say the least! I think it would be fair to say my summer’s been dominated by two things... holidays and hospitals!
“We get around 600 or 700 people to our home games – and we deserve more. We want to build the fan base and we now have a huge platform to build on with the success we had last season.
Let’s begin with the best bits first... the holidays.
“We need the income from the fans and the positive exposure they can give us. We’re always working hard to bring more people in and we need the sporting fans of Peterborough to give us a try – I think we deserve it and I’m sure they’ll enjoy it.”
Chris is lucky enough to have two months off ‘work’ each year to recuperate after their hectic season. So, after heading to Egypt and Paris last year, we decided we should venture further afield this summer and try to squeeze just one more little holiday into our time!
So maybe it’s time to check out the action on the ice, not just the pitch this season! We can tell you it’s an exciting night out with plenty of action and don’t worry about understanding all the rules, the fans are friendly and will soon put you straight... just cheer for the guys in the Phantoms’ kit!
Although Chris has no problems with the time off, it’s fair to say my work place were not as keen to grant me this amazing luxury! However, after much begging, pleading and ‘bottom kissing’ I was finally given my whole holiday leave in one go.

What do you think to Peterborough? “I have come down from Manchester so Peterborough is quite quiet in comparison, but I have really enjoyed being here. My girlfriend is pregnant so I don’t tend to go out a lot, so a quieter place suits me better.” What do you think of your new team-mates? “We have a very young squad so everyone is around the same age and gets on really well. Rather than a few different ‘cliques’ it’s just one big ‘clique’ with everyone involved. On our pre-season trip I had to do the new boy’s thing of getting up and singing a song. I did an old song ‘Mr Bojangles.’ It just one of things you have to do and get on with. Some of the others have taken the fine instead of singing, but I was happy to do it.” What are your first impressions of the Championship? “It is a massive step up but it’s one we are capable of making.”

We went to Marbella for a week to visit my parents and after this break we literally landed and then re-boarded, this time heading to the beautiful island of Jamaica. Our third and final trip took us to the crazy town of Las Vegas. Wow, what a place! We stayed in the MGM Grand for five nights and by the end Chris had lost all our money gambling so it was definitely time to leave! Our highlight of the holiday was the helicopter ride over the Hoover Dam and down into the Grand Canyon, followed by an hour long jet ski ride on Lake Mead and a tour through the desert in a hummer. A very exciting and romantic day, I kept waiting for the engagement ring to pop out... but... no such luck for me. Hehe! Back to reality and back to work... it was then that Chris found out he needed an operation. He had to go up to Manchester for the surgeon to sort out his ‘gilmore’s groin’ which meant him missing the annual trip to Marbella with the boys and the start of the new season. So instead of Chris enjoying yet more sun in Spain, he was stuck at home feeling sorry for himself with not even a text from the boys to say they were missing him! His op also meant him missing the pre season friendlies against Premier League clubs. The worst moment was him missing the friendly against Tottenham who he supports... he was not a happy chap whilst watching that game! As I don’t like being left out, I thought it was about time I took the limelight and needed an operation too! So, one night, a couple of weeks after Chris’ op I had the most horrendous pain in my stomach which just got worse an worse, until finally at 6am I found myself in an ambulance on my way to hospital for the first time EVER in my life. Once there I waited... and waited... and waited a little longer to be finally told that at 11pm I’d be having my appendix removed... I was gutted (as it were)! Since then Chris has been nothing but brilliant to me, something I can’t say I was to him, as three days after he had his op I’d lost all sympathy and thought he should be back to his usual self! So, to say the least I’d definitely sum up my summer as ‘interesting’, however, the story isn’t over yet... just when I thought I was getting better... my doctor calls to tell me I need to go back into hospital... what’s wrong now??? To be continued...
