MOVE OVER, JOHN CLARE Peterborough-based poetry and hip hop act Dead Poets, featuring Peterborough Poet Laureate Michael ‘MC Mixy’ Riccardi and former Peterborough Poet Laureate Mark Grist, spent most of August performing at the Edinburgh Festival. They’ve done 20 shows of their own and by the end of the Festival were, packing the room out as word about the show spread – they even got a four-star review from The Scotsman, the respected Scottish national broadsheet. Their act, which combines poetry with hip hop, is a sharp, witty look at how people play with language and whether the two disciplines will ever get along. Instead of relaxing on their nights off, they’ve also been competing in poetry slams and hip hop battles, with Mark Grist coming joint first in a Hammer and Tongue slam – which is big news! They’ve got more things planned in the future but are waiting for confirmation, for more info visit www.deadpoetry.co.uk.

The winner is always the charity though – it’s one of the best and most popular fundraising events on our calendar.” Entry costs £350 per team of four. Individuals are welcome to enter and will then be paired up for the event. To book call John on 07880 600635 or email john.burcham@sky.com. www.esp m ag .co.u k ( S e pte mbe r )

NEW BUZZ ABOUT THE BEEHIVE Thumbs up to the guys behind Jim's Yard and Jim's Bistro who’ve recently re-opened The Beehive in Rivergate and with it given me a place to frequent my lunch hour instead of spending £200 on a cup of overrated coffee. The food, like the other ‘Jim’ establishments is very good and I’m told they do “nice ales from Castor Brewery” but I wouldn’t know, as I’m about as much of an ale drinker as George Best was a mineral water aficionado.
NEW HAMPTON SHOWROOM FOR BALDERSTON! Balderston Motorcycles have moved from their Lincoln Road home of 51 years to a plush purpose-built showroom at Phorpres Close, Cygnet Park in Hampton and boy does it look impressive. Staff and visitors at the BMW dealers have never had it so good with ‘luxuries’ including air-conditioning, tea and coffee, sugar, a plasma screen, Wi-Fi, a very comfortable service waiting area, an upstairs, running water and fresh air (I might have made a couple of those up). The workshop has six bays and an MOT bay and there’s ample parking for cars and motorbikes. I couldn’t sit back and let my Man About Town sponsors do all the hard work in moving premises. So I put in several backbreaking man-hours… riding bikes. I took the addictive S 1000 RR first on the transfer run from Lincoln Road to Hampton. It was a tough job that was absolutely no fun whatsoever but I couldn’t let the team down. The superb new showroom is open 8.30am until 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 8.30am until 5pm on Saturdays, closing Sunday and Monday. The telephone number remains the same: 01733 565470. The new premises will be hosting an open weekend on October 2 and 3 when the ESP girls will be joining in the fun. Visit www.balderston.net for details.
Top marks too for giving the patio area some style and providing free WiFi plus a private room for parties and meetings. The new Beehive has been tastefully done out and it's good to see the place reinvigorated. I’m sure Steve Jason will be adding it to his ‘second circuit’ for venues that end of town.
NEW TEAM BEHIND THE WORTLEY The Wortley Almshouses in Westgate is one of Peterborough’s best-kept secrets and it’s now under new management. The pub offers great value beers and spirits (as they don’t stock brands) but better still the new landlord and lady have extended opening hours of both the pub and kitchen. This means when I’ve had a couple of sherbets after work and want to eat something other than a rancid kebab or dog meat burger I can pop in as late as 11pm and they’ll rustle something up. WiFi has also been installed and if you’re a BT Openzone customer you can access it for free. More ‘working’ lunch options for me then.

BIKERS NEEDED FOR AFGHAN HEROES RELAY
So Kelly Brook has been voted as number one celebrity body in a survey commissioned by Fitness First. The mind wanders…yum; Kelly’s one lovely bit of fluff. So why did I have to read recently she’s admitted to having saggy boobs?! Now I’m picturing a topless Matt Lucas. Not good.
Staying with the bike theme, anyone interested in taking part in the 48-hour Burgen Relay across the UK – collecting for Afghan Heroes en route – should visit www.burgenrelay.co.uk. It starts September 4.

A refurbishment costing over £1 million at the fire-hit Praise venue will hopefully see it re-open before Christmas as a Jimmy Spice’s buffet restaurant. There are six others across the country so it’s great to see them choose Peterborough as their next destination and to see the venue back in use. There’s going to be seating for more than 350 people and you can eat Indian, Chinese, Thai and Italian all under one roof! Sounds perfect. It’s a bit like God creating a woman with the lips of Scarlett Johansson, the boobs of Keeley (21) from Bromley and the bum of Kylie Minogue. What more could you ask for?

CRESSET LIVES ON! Well done to all of the 18,000 people who signed a petition to help keep the Cresset open after looking like we were going to lose it forever following the previous year’s loss of £150,000. I shamefully didn’t get around to signing the petition but am delighted a 32-year piece of Peterborough history is staying. The theatre will keep going but cost efficiencies have meant several staff taking voluntary redundancy, which is never nice to see. The box office as also been scaled down to encourage more online ticket sales at www.cresset.co.uk. Shows planned this autumn include Jimmy Carr, Charlie Landsborough, Sally Morgan, Stewart Francis and Peter Alliss. Of course most of these shows should be sold out with 18,000 people signing a petition… let’s hope so. Read more on p.14 of this issue.

SAXONS IN FULL MONTY SHOW! A big shout to city American football team the Saxons who are stripping down to their gentlemen’s sausages at Angels on September 13 to raise funds for four year-old Leo Waites. Leo needs a special operation in America to ease the pain of his cerebral palsy and give him the chance of walking independently. His operation is booked for November 16. The life-changing operation has a reported 100% success rate in its 23-year history but it’s only currently available outside of the UK and the costs involved are close to £45k. This will pay for his operation, the duration of a month’s stay, his pre-operative and post operative care, flights, physiotherapy and the equipment he’ll need thereafter. WE’RE BACK IN (SHOW) BUSINESS! Jonathan and staff
Like most people in Peterborough we were gutted to hear the city had lost another theatre when the Cresset announced it was no longer going to run shows earlier this year… so yes, we’re guilty of a little celebratory jig now that the show, is indeed, going on! Now a new deal’s been negotiated with promoters the Cresset is once again building a line-up of cracking shows we would’ve otherwise had to travel miles for. Previously there was around an 80/20 split with promoters taking the bigger chunk and the Cresset having to pay up regardless of how many seats had been sold – they’ve now managed to convince the promoters to hire the theatre out and carry the risk themselves. Staff at the Cresset were stunned when comedian John Bishop made a heartfelt speech to his
www.esp m ag .co.u k ( S e pte mbe r )
audience over the theatre’s closure at the end of his show, but it seems that good old people power and thousands of people signing petitions, also helped make the management determined to try and find a way forward.
closing,” explained Joanthan “because we’ve found a way that’s much lower risk to the organisation we can protect all the other community facilities here while at the same time providing the city with a theatre.”
Jonathan Martin, chief executive of YMCA Cambridgeshire and Peterborough which runs the complex under the direction of the Cresset Board of Trustees, told ESP the level of support blew them away.
Acts like Jane McDonald are set to return, Stephen K Amos, The Stones tribute act, Peter Alliss the golf commentator as well as shows like Tango Pasion, Shakin’ All over featuring tunes from the 50s, 60s and 70s and Waterloo the ABBA concert show.
“The public support has been unbelievable, it’s been shocking how many wrote, sent emails, signed petitions – so yes I hope now that we’ve made a real effort to keep it going that they’ll show up, vote with their feet and support the acts coming here. I think we’ve got a really good variety so hopefully there’s something for everybody.” Sadly some people have lost their jobs in the process and the box office has been scaled down, but the change of deal with the promoters combined with restructuring behind the scenes, should mean it’s now in a stronger position and for us the audience, everything will be business as usual. “We’re on a much, much better footing than when we had to announce the theatre was
“We’ve got some great acts coming here for this season,” added Jonathan “but we’ve got to start working really hard for the year after. The first year we’ve said to people – ‘come and do it on a room hire only deal’. They may have done that because it’s difficult to find other venues or an easy option but the second year we’ve got to convince them it was a really good idea. And in order to do that it’s got to be worth their while and when they come and realise they’re making good money we’ll be OK.” So as the old saying goes – use it, or lose it – so come on folks, we’ve almost lost it once, let’s make sure our city’s entertainment doesn’t die off! www.cresset.co.uk

S Zilch Matty Speaks... T A M F O R DCALLING I had the pleasure last week of working at the Glastonbury Abbey Festival, (That’s the one Michael Evis who runs Glastonbury festival puts on to say thank you to all the locals for the chaos caused by the 150,0000 people that descend on the small villages in the area!) I got to hang out with the national treasures that are Madness! The band did a superb set and Suggs and the guys were as nice as pie.

STAMFORD GOSSIP Quayhole Kate’s has finally closed its doors after being a big part of the town for many years. The club’s changed hands and I hear the new owner has big plans for the venue! Watch this space…
The summer holidays are upon us again and I’m off to do my usual work on the Key Theatre’s youth summer show High School Musical. I won’t be acting this time round though, but will be helping my friend, and the director, Michael Cross get the show up and running. If you’ve not got your tickets yet then get on the blower to the Key box office: 01733 207239. Shows run from August 31 to September 4.

The extension at The Pear Tree is coming along nicely. The pub will soon be opening a new bar and roof terrace. The Periwig’s launched its new lunch menu and now offers a new range of meals including buckets of chicken wings, nachos and bucket party deals. Also Tuesday lunches are buy one get one free! The Exeter Arms in Easton on the Hill is getting ready for its grand opening in September. Michael and Sue, brother and sister proprietors of The Crown hotel have taken the pub on and have restored it to their usual high standards no doubt. They’ll be offering a warm welcoming bar, restaurant, orangery and garden along with five individually designed bedrooms!
Earl’s Tattoo Studio Stamford’s well known tattooist Adi Earl has opened his own tattoo and body jewellery shop on North Street. Adi’s worked at a few of the studios in the area and it’s great to hear he’s finally got his own place. He’s available to do all types of tattoo work and available for evening appointments. The studio’s also selling quality body jewellery. Adi’s done most of my own tattoos in the past and I highly recommend anyone thinking of getting inked to drop by and see his artwork and ideas! GREEN MAN BEER FEST Once you’ve had a warm up at the big Peterborough Beer Fest head over to Stamford for the biggie at The Green Man on Scotgate. Now under new management Asia and James are staging a huge autumn beer festival from September 3 - 5 with 40 real ales and six ciders plus a great range of Belgian bottled beers. There’s live music throughout and a BBQ over the weekend if the weather’s fine.
What is your favourite thing about running/being involved with the Westside Gym? “Me and the rest of the team get the opportunity to meet and mix with so many great people, and we get to know them personally and many become friends. It’s great to be part of a team and we all get a lot of satisfaction from helping people become fitter and healthier. The gym’s more than just somewhere to exercise, it's a real social place, we've even had a couple of weddings, where the couples have met at the gym! Ahhh!”
When you don’t feel like exercising what’s your best motivation technique? “When I don't feel like exercising I tend to just have the day off. It doesn't happen too often, I normally get in 3-4 workouts each week. Consistency is the key to achieving your fitness goal, too often people turn a single missed workout into a six week lapse, then it becomes very difficult to get started again. It's so much better just to skip the odd workout and then get right back into your routine. Exercise should be seen as part of your routine and not something you have to do.” Duncan’s been around Stamford for 30 years – he’s ex RAF but most people will recognise him as the manager of Westside Gym. He spent some time at Wittering and now considers himself a local with a bit of a Scottish accent saying –“It's more Sean Connery than the Krankies” – mind you, have you heard him say Fan Daby Dosey...?! Duncan’s single and living in town and he told me –“I just love the small town friendly atmosphere of Stamford, just walking down the street and bumping into lots of people you know, I enjoy that familiarity. It's a great place to live but I was brought up by the seaside and really do miss it... Rutland Water just isn't the same!”
Where’s your favourite place to go on a night out in Stamford? “A typical night out for me in Stamford is usually a Saturday night... I’m normally only good for one night these days – my powers of recovery aren't what they used to be. If I'm going out to eat it's normally The Crown or the Garden Room at The George or one of many good Indian restaurants in town. For drinks we normally just stick to The Crown, Periwig and Mama Liz’s for a few late ones...”
What could be introduced to make Stamford a better place? “Improve Stamford? Move it the coast... no really Stamford’s a beautiful town and I feel very lucky to live here. I think we could really do with better sporting facilities in the town. We desperately need a decent swimming pool an outdoor running track and a rugby/football facility that the town could be proud of. Other towns in the county have much better facilities than Stamford – we seem to get forgotten. I also think the town needs to be promoted more, we should be swamped with tourists every year. Stamford has so much to offer, we just need to shout about it more.”
What are your top five tunes to excercise to? “Well my music tastes are varied – anything upbeat really, just get my iPod on, crank it up and away we go. A bit of modern a bit of heavy (ish) stuff – as long as it's got a good beat and helps me get a few more reps out.”
GOOD MUSIC - GOOD DEALS - GOOD TIMES
FROM CUBA TO ALABAMA Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge is certainly living up to its name this month, with spooky rockabilly and Latin passion coming to Stamford during September. First up on September 10 is Mas y Mas, who mix Latino, Flamenco and AfroCuban styles with bewitching rhythms, designed to make you dance. September 11 sees The Red Cabs from France bring a little Gallic charm to the classic rockabilly sound and they’re supported by the Front Porch Preachers. The Pine Hill Haints come to Mama Liz’s on September 23 and are a band to catch – hailing from Alabama and holding their first rehearsals in Pine Hill Cemetary, they support acts such as Th’Legendary Shack Shakers across the US. Describing themselves as ‘Alabama Ghost Country’, they mix honky tonk, rockabilly, folk and bluegrass to bone-chilling effect.

Mr Postman… 'I Spy With My Little Eye, Something Beginning With DREAD!' They say that moving house is one of the top three most stressful things we put ourselves through alongside having a baby (a joyous occasion) and divorce (not so joyous). But yet there I was doing just that – packing boxes, unpacking boxes that my boyfriend’s packed (yes I am a control freak but prefer to be known as a perfectionist!) and buying things that I think I potentially might need, but that will more than likely just gather dust in my new abode! I was stressed because, added to the fact that we’d so much to do but very little time, it was also extremely hot. I’d taken the day off work to get myself organised, packed and to de-stress a little but instead of relaxing in the garden with a book, I was gasping for air through the masses of cardboard boxes and general stuff. I just HAD to strip down to the negligee in a bid
www.es p m ag .co.u k ( S e pte mbe r )
to cool down. Shock, shock, horror, horror (I hear you utter in bewilderment) but this is most common for me – I do tend to cross the exhibitionist line from time to time (I know there are many other ladies who like to walk around like the day they were born too – it’s liberating!) That was better. I’d mastered the art of eating cereals in the buff and was collecting bits from the kitchen…when suddenly the sun went behind a cloud. Or at least I thought it had. The shadow that I thought was the cloud actually happened to be a peeping Tom postee who’d caught a glimpse of the moon on the way to the door. Oh NO! Cringe! Mum was always warning me to – “put it away” – but listen, I did not. Whilst he’d disappeared from the window (after hovering for that tad bit too long) I had a dilemma. What on earth do I do now? What must he be thinking? I panicked (FLASHER ALERT, FLASHER ALERT?!) I contemplated hiding in the next room so he wouldn’t know for certain it was me but then I thought, he might actually think it was my mum and that would be wrong to tarnish her reputation. After all, mother dearest is quite quiet and demure. I bit the bullet (so to speak) and went to the front
susan.saunders@espmag.co.uk
door… on all fours. I didn’t want him to see this brown vision moving ever nearer to the door (it has frosted glass panels). Finally I popped my head from around the door trying to look as relaxed as possible. “Heeeeeelllllloooo”, I said with a bold smile. “Oh… um, morning,” the postman stuttered uncomfortably. “I… um… had been knocking for a while but the music was on.” Silly me. I thought I’d heard something but I’d been too busy dancing to Cheryl’s Fight For This Love to give ‘the noise’ the attention it deserved. “Gulp!” (I didn’t know if this belonged to me or him). I made the exchange as painless as possible by avoiding direct eye contact and signing for my La Senza package. Of course, I’d forgotten that I’d ordered some new nightwear and bra sets of all things! Ahh – the beautiful irony. So as you see, moving house can be quite stressful as I found out. Perhaps next time I’m pulling Tim’s packing techniques to shreds, I should actually be looking closer to home and be wearing shreds of the material kind.

AMAZING AR457 SERUM Been searching for a miracle youth potion? Well, this is probably the closest thing on the beauty market you can get to one. Tried and tested by make-up artist Karen Alder, who’s worked with Kylie Minogue, Pixie Lott and Holly Valance to name just a few, she describes it as – “amazing, it’s like a 10 hour sleep in every application… it leaves skin beautifully fresh, plump and ready for action.” This really is set to be the next big thing in anti-ageing serums so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and although I’m yet to get fine lines and wrinkles (touch wood) this was great at smoothing out traces of fatigue after a tiring day in the office and late nights at the weekend, leaving me with a radiant complexion the next morning. I also found it helped to reduce minor skin imperfections and was perfect for dehydrated skin. The elixir contains Argan Oil, helping to block free radicals which can cause the skin to age, and rosemary which acts as an antioxidant. For the best results use alongside other products in the range such as the Skin Shaker Mask, to soften and smooth out the deepest wrinkles. Ar457 Elixir Metaserum is £77.25 for 30ml and available from www.ar457.com
IT’S OUR SECRET...

Smooth onto your skin morning and night, and gently wipe away with a warm cotton pad or face flannel for beautifully clean skin. TORI’S BEAUTY BLISS WITH AMANDA MURPHY Self-employed beauty therapist Amanda Murphy has been qualified for over 20 years and, luckily for us, she’s now based in Westgate Department Store where she has her own salon area. Amanda invited our Face of ESP Tori Bradshaw along to try it out. Amanda offers a wide variety of treatments including facials, manicures and pedicures and gave Tori a Moor Spa face mask. She doesn’t believe in using harsh chemicals on the skin so opts for a skin care range called Natural Elements which are rich in vitamin oils, plant extracts and organic essential oils, vegan and vegetarian approved. Amanda begins her facial treatments with a skin analysis to identify your individual skin type so she can then use the appropriate products tailored to your skins needs. Facials are suitable for both men and women of all ages and range in price from £25 - £42. Tori said she can certainly recommend it – “It was fabulous! It really rejuvenated my skin. I looked like a new, fresher version of myself afterwards. The products were lovely, all natural ingredients and made my skin feel as soft as the day I was born. It was super relaxing – I actually fell asleep during the massage! I can't wait to go back for some other treatments.” If you’re in need of a quick pick me up then why not opt for a manicure or pedicure? Amanda uses high quality Jessica nail products for these treatments and can help solve your nails problems. She understands that just as there are different skin and hair types there are also different types of nails – brittle, weak, flaking and ridged – which will require individual care. So next time you’re doing your shopping in Westgate Department Store why not pop and see Amanda (based near the beauty counters) and see what she can do for you whether it be waxing, ear candling or a relaxing Indian Head Massage. There’s no denying that this girl has the X Factor! She’s a quirky style icon, oozes personality, is a hit making machine and is soon to be Mrs Russell Brand – ESP’s Joanne Garwell delves into the crazy world of Katy Perry…
After scoring four huge hits from her 2008 debut album One Of The Boys, two time Grammy nominated Katy Perry is back with a brand new album, after reaching number one in the UK charts with California Gurls. Not only that, she’s also become part of the hugely successful X Factor as a judge at the auditions. The X Factor, one of the UK’s biggest entertainment shows, is back and with judge Danni Minogue on maternity leave until the judge’s houses stage, the show sees a line up of guest judges to fill her shoes. Quick-witted and sassy Katy Perry is one of them. But what was she looking to find in the new hopeful contestants? “I wanted to find someone that has a spark that’s different and unlike anything that’s already out there in the industry. The industry is really competitive and so I was looking for someone not only with a voice, but maybe with a distinct voice to them.” With other celebrities such as Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls, Geri Halliwell and Pixie Lott stepping into the judge’s hot seat, what kind of judge does Katy see herself as? “I’m definitely not going to be a sugar-coated judge, because there are people that need criticism and sometimes they need to hear the truth. If it’s obviously not going to work out for them, ever, and they haven’t figured that out, they need to aspire to something else. It’s a bit of a hard thing to do, but hopefully I can say it in a way that isn’t a mean way.” As a leading influence in the charts ever since her debut single I Kissed A Girl, was she nervous to be sitting next to the infamous Simon Cowell and the other judges at the Dublin audition? Hell no – she thrived on it! “I love Simon,” said Katy “I’ve met him a few times before and he’s very confident and very sarcastic, which is definitely my cup of tea. I love Cheryl, she’s a fashion inspiration and I want those dimples. Then Louis, I had never met him but I was excited to meet him in his home town. I’m just excited to be in that great company.” Katy’s appearance on The X Factor coincides with the release of her second album, Teenage Dream. It features the number one smash hit California Gurls and her latest single which is the title track, which she started writing before she met her future husband but finished after they became an item. It’s going to be a busy year for the quirky songstress, as she’s not only appearing on the X Factor and promoting her new album but planning her wedding to comedian and actor Russell Brand in October. Her no-nonsense personality has also won her the job of presenting the MTV Europe Music Awards. She did such a fantastic job she was asked to present it again! With a hugely successful pop career, talent show judging and awards shows under her belt, maybe this is what they call the X Factor… Katy Perry‘s album Teenage Dream is out on August 30. www.katyperry.com

There was a Jack Hunt School student who entered the Face of ESP… and won! The competition is all about taking an ordinary local girl and transforming her into an ambassador for ESP Magazine. Tori Bradshaw has certainly done that and has joined us at everything from charity events to local balls, meeting celebrities and appearing in fashion shoots. She’s turned into a star. “It’s been a fabulous year,” said Tori. “I can’t believe it’s all gone so quickly! It's given me the biggest confidence boost and I’m so happy I decided to enter. “I believe that confidence helped me progress in life by enabling me to give a good job interview and getting the job I wanted (trainee accountant with Figures UK). Now I’m on my way to qualifying in a career I’ll really enjoy. “I’ve met some fantastic people and I wouldn’t change this year for anything!”

Top Five JJ Bird Moments
BIRD IN THE HOUSE
Bed Sharing – It didn’t take long for one of the BB ladies to make a move on lovely JJ. Corin managed to lure him into her bed after just a week. Only two people really know for sure what happened under those covers. All I do know is that there was some awkwardness during the next couple of days.
Just as I was starting to get a little bored of the final series of Big Brother, local lad JJ Bird entered the house out of the blue. He followed hot on the high heels of another Peterborough contestant, Sunshine, who’d been evicted earlier. He was their first choice and blended straight in like he’d been there from the off.
To be honest, I wasn’t completely surprised to see JJ enter the house, JJ with Austrailian housemate John James as he’s always had a taste for fame. He started out as a promising young boxer, has appeared on ITV shows Golden Balls and The Cube, modelled for ESP, and more recently he’s been papped out in London with his mate Aston from JLS. As I’ve met JJ a few times, I had of course been supporting him on the show, and I wasn’t the only one. Hundreds of Peterborough people joined a Facebook group called JJ Bird To Win Big Brother. I spoke to the creator, Craig Westbrook, who’s known JJ since he was just 13. Craig explained – “As soon as I knew he was in the short list to be on the show, I started the Facebook group and a website.” Craig’s company (Digital Aerials Ltd) has been a sponsor of JJ for many years after seeing potential in the young boxer. “He takes his boxing very seriously,” Craig continued. “That’s why he wanted to be on Big Brother in the first place. With the recognition of being on the show he should get the sponsorship he needs to go far with the sport.” Even after only meeting JJ a couple of times, I personally felt he’d been quieter than usual in the house to start with. Craig agreed – “He was quite reserved, especially during his first couple of weeks. JJ’s usually more of a cheeky character!” So, what did the most important woman in JJ’s life think of his performance in the house? His mum, Maz Bird, told ESP exclusively –“He was being a little quieter than usual because there were not many people to bounce off. Our family is always having a laugh and taking the mick out of each other. I think that’s why he had some good banter going on with Sam Pepper.” So how did his mum feel about watching her son on the tele every night? “It was very strange!” she told me. “JJ had wanted to be on the show for the last three years, so it’s amazing to see that one of his dreams has come true. It all happened so quickly. I didn’t even find out he had the chance of going on the show until the day before... and neither did he!” So our local boxing champ fought his way through to the end and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the near future. Mikey Clarke www.esp m ag .co.u k ( S e pte mbe r )
Photo: Rex Features
His popularity may be to do with him being a nice bit of eye candy (the words of my Missus... not me!) and the fact he created some decent male banter.
What The Dickens – JJ got up close and personal with the Tree Of Temptation, as it set him a task to be the Artful Dodger and steal props off housemates without them noticing. He got five objects successfully – that boxing training must have taught him how to be quick on his feet. Space Invader – JJ became a space invader in this secret BB task.... and won a fancy meal for every housemate that he managed to keep personal contact with. I have a feeling there were many girls watching that wouldn’t have minded him invading their personal space! Two Horse Race – JJ has won many fights in his time. He now also holds the title of being the fastest housemate dressed as a horse (with the help of John James). With the lads proving to the fittest pantomime horse, they got to enter a real race outside the BB house – and they won £300 for the shopping budget by finishing third. Lightweight v Heavyweight – In the run up to the final, housemates all got to choose between two options in BB’s ‘unpredictable’ task. JJ’s options were simply ‘Lightweight’ or ‘Heavyweight.’ He went for heavyweight, and therefore had to put on a hilarious sumo-wrestler suit for the afternoon... Like a good sport, he put it on straight away. This was perhaps a glimpse of what JJ may have looked like if he hadn’t spent so many years boxing!
Things you may not know about JJ Bird JJ’s full name is Joe-John Daniel Bird, although all the housemates called him JJ, leaving fellow contestant John James to resort back to his full name. According to Heat Magazine, JLS star Aston Merrygold has revealed that he and JJ are mates and have a healthy rivalry when it comes to the ladies. He explained, “We’ve got this thing called c**k-blocking. We went to the theatre a few weeks ago and JJ was talking to this girl who was an usher. Then I walked over and said, ‘Hi’. And he was like – ‘You’re such a blocker, man!’” JJ’s mum says her lad is extra competitive, and won’t ever turn down a dare. He gets involved in the odd drinking game, one which ended up with him drinking a pint of beer out of a shoe! JJ once auditioned to go on the TV series Gladiators, and despite passing physical tests was told he ‘wasn’t suitable’ for the show. Bet they regret that decision now.

Shane Jackson
Peterborough has really made it on to the TV map in recent years and now Channel 4’s award winning daytime show, Come Dine With Me, is back for a brand new series and a whole show filmed in and around the city. Competitive cooks from Stanground, Orton Southgate, Werrington village and Wisbech will be ready to shock and delight with an eccentric mix of hosting styles when the show airs on September 13 at 5pm. Every week five strangers, who love to entertain, take it in turns to throw a dinner party in their own personal style. But this is a feast with a twist: after each dinner, the guests secretly score the host a mark out of ten. The food and the atmosphere are taken into account when scoring. At the week’s end, the top-scoring chef wins £1000 in cash. First to host is chatty mum of three, Parveen Ashraf from Werrington, whose Asian themed
menu consists of a whopping two starters, five mains and two desserts. Then it’s flamboyant Shane Jackson from Stanground (pictured) who just loves to entertain with his Le Creuset! Catering manager Carole Barlow from Wisbech decides to get all nostalgic by having a 70s themed evening then it’s the turn of the party girl of the group, Alyson Nicholson from Orton Southgate. The last to host is Ricky Dent from Fletton and then it’s… the results! Shane Jackson works in customer services at BGL and was keen to join the show because he loves throwing dinner parties, but admits it was a little harder than he thought. “I love having people round and socialising. On average I’ll have friends round for food five times a month, it’s just really nice. My signature dish is probably lasagne. “I just like to show people I can cook and wanted to meet some new people but it’s hard having camera crews round all the time and difficult to cook when you’re being told what to do. It was a long week so I’d definitely recommend taking time off work to anyone else who takes part!”
The show was actually filmed back in November so Shane’s eager to see the results but is also a little apprehensive – “I’m sort of nervous about how I’ll be portrayed,” he confessed. “I have a bit of a hand washing obsession so they’ll probably make something of that! “It was a real experience though and I got on really well with two of the people on the show and we’re now regularly in touch.” Many local people may already be familiar with Parveen Ashraf who’s business the Amaani Spice Box (www.amaanispice.co.uk) has gone from strength to strength. Parveen regularly cooks in people’s homes and does live cookery demonstrations but admits appearing on the show was very different. “This was the most surreal experience of my life. As a viewer I always wondered what happened to the contestants and whether it was all real – it’s a really unusual situation. I’ve made some good friends though and several of us all cook for each other since the show.” So make sure you tune in to Channel 4 this month and see what Peterborough’s cooks really have to offer.
COME DINE WITH PARVEEN: BOLLYWOOD STYLE If spice is nice as far as you’re concerned you can take some tips from Peterborough contestant Parveen Ashraf at her course at the City College which starts on September 20. Parveen is a regular on the Ideal Shopping channel (based in Peterborough) and is running a five week cookery course at the college. It’ll give you an insight into TV cooking and you can learn to cook a three course meal and the Indian feast she actually prepares on Come Dine With Me. It’s £56 and runs from 7pm - 9pm so if you’d like to book call 01733 761361.

Official festival patron and Michelin star chef Jason Atherton was one of the celebrities taking to the stage in the demonstration kitchen, which was packed out by eager visitors. LOCAL LOVE-IN
Photo: Terry Harris
Peterborough Environment City Trust have set up shop on Central Avenue, in the heart of Dogsthorpe, offering locally produced fruit and veg in the centre of the city as part of their Love Local campaign. As over 25% of people in Peterborough are obese – step away from the pies! – and as locally produced food is loads better for the environment as it doesn’t have to travel hundreds of miles in a lorry, PECT are doing all they can to encourage us to eat more of it. Aside from both of those points, locally grown food also taste much nicer as it’s always in season, deliciously fresh and not coated in nasty chemicals. While we live near one of Britain’s biggest agricultural areas, if you don’t have a car, it’s not easy to get to a farm shop where you’ll find this kind of produce – which is where the Love Local shop comes in handy! For more information, contact Karen Lawrence on 01733 866441.
HAPPY SUNDAYS @ MALAYBA It’s always great to get friends and family together for a meal out and we hear Malayba have come up with a great offer which should be an incentive to finally get everyone round the table! On Sundays simply order any one of the four set meals for your party and save 50% from the third person onwards. So, a group of four taking Set Meal A would mean the first two people pay at the standard price, while the others pay just half price. The more people in your party, the more you gain! Sounds good to us. If you haven’t ventured into Malayba yet it’s completely transformed what was formerly Gaston on Broadway into an exotic, oasis with a unique feel and Malaysian food our reviewer thought was gorgeous! We need a good balance of Omega 3, 6 and 9. At the minute everything has added Omega 3 but we need to ensure we get the correct balance. Taking one type for too long without the other may upset the fatty acid balance. These fats are ‘essential’ as they’re not made in our bodies so we need to take them from foods such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, dark green leaf veg, whole grains, linseed an olive oils (to name a few). Always eat these foods as fresh as possible to ensure good quality as they can turn rancid and not that pleasant to eat! What we DO NOT NEED are those trans fats/hydrogenated fats, nor do we need too much saturated fat from animal produce either. I’m not suggesting you start to have an oil slick on your plate here, life is about balance and so is your food intake. Common sense guides us with food – the less man has tampered with it generally you will find it offers a collection of nutrients that your body will thrive on. Some of the positive effects you could see by getting the right type of fat in your body –
BEAT YOUR FAT FEARS! ‘Get fat-free and go on a no carbohydrate diet’ – how does that sound to you?
and weight gain – not to mention diabetes.
For many people it’s a desperate cry for weight loss or to keep their weight steady, to me it’s a recipe for disaster and one way to compromise your health and speed up your aging! No doubt about it our high loading of carbohydrates, particularly the refined carbohydrates such as white sugar, bagels, choccies, sweets, alcohol and bread, is helping us look like the Michelin Man with our spare tyres! Carbs turn into sugar to be used as energy, if that’s not needed then it’s stored as fat and this is the type of fat that might be contributing to high cholesterol
Carbohydrates are our energy source, we’ve evolved using them, trouble is they’ve been so highly manipulated into refined stuff that we’re now scared of the ‘real’ stuff. Carbs are known as ‘simple or ‘complex’. Complex carbs are high in nutrients and fibre and release more slowly therefore it takes longer to digest them (brown rice, oats, beans etc). Vegetables are also carbs, so lots more leafy veg, smaller portions of carbs alongside some quality protein and fat makes a better meal. We also need fat, for years we’ve been scared about using fats and they were grouped together as all bad and something to avoid particularly if you
Velvet skin Less wrinkles Better joint health Better gut health Reducing inflammation Feel fuller for longer More energy and increased stamina and increased fat burning Better support for hormones
SO WHO WANTS TO BE FAT-FREE? Spend good money on your fats and oils too, a good coldpressed virgin olive oil may initially look expensive but you wouldn’t think anything of buying that good bottle of plonk and drinking it in an evening would you?! Of course the advice I’m giving here is general and there may be situations where you need to have your fat monitored or you may need to eat some extra complex carbs! Chris at his exhibition in Queensgate
PICTURE THIS Remember when we took a nostalgic look back at the Boro earlier this year with some great photos taken by local guy Chris Porsz?
Well, the paramedic turned photographer never dreamed when he started snapping city people in and around Peterborough 30 years ago that he’d be standing in Queensgate (which wasn’t even built when he started out) next to his own photographic exhibition. Loads of people went along to see Chris’ trip down memory lane and it was so popular the exhibition was even extended. Remember the punks sat outside Virgin Records in the 80s? The teenagers crowding under the Guildhall in the 70s? The city centre before Queensgate? Over the years
outrageous the punks were for the age and how today’s are quite tame by comparison. To walk down the street with a purple Mohican took some nerve!” Chris has managed to trace several of the people in his pictures and has been recreating some of the scenes but would like to find more – “What I’d really like to come out form this is some reunions – it would be great to find some more of these people featured. I always told people I’d give them a copy and never got around to it so I’d love to meet some of them again.” In the meantime Chris continues his day job as a paramedic but continues to capture images of the city. “I wasn’t consciously trying to photograph Peterborough,” Chris explained, “it was more the people I was interested in rather than the buildings and I regret that to a certain extent as people like to see the changes in the backgrounds so I’ve changed my style. Back then I used a telephoto lens and isolated people from the background but now I’m a bit less shy and I try and get everything in.”
Chris has captured it all and now has his second calendar on sale with a new collection of his favourite shots for 2011. “People like that nostalgia thing and the fashions and to see how things have changed over the years,” Chris Told ESP. “Somebody said to me how

Craig’s got The X factor
The X Factor judges
Peterborough talent is taking over the TV! As a new series of X Factor hits Saturday nights – it’s time to look out for Peterborough lad Craig Saggers. After Aston from JLS and then Nicole Lawrence last year we now have another Peterborough singer to watch out for on X Factor. Craig Saggers is appearing with his friend Joe as flamboyant double act Diva Fever and they’re set to make an impact! The multi-award winning entertainment show has returned to our screens for an explosive seventh series, following on from the ratings smash of last season, as the search for the next singing superstar reaches new levels. Craig from Longthorpe was originally spotted in a local X Factor style competition called the X-mas Factor run by then city radio station Lite FM. Gregg Nunney, now breakfast show host of the station which replaced Lite, Connect FM in Peterborough, told ESP he’ll be rooting for him. “I first heard Craig sing on an audition line for the X-mas Factor competition back in 2005 and even then I could tell he had something special. From what he’s told me I think his act will be so flamboyant and unusual I’m confident he’ll attract the judges’ attention and do well. I’d expect him to go far. I’m very proud of him.” Craig’s dad Martin told ESP that it was entering that competition which gave him the confidence to continue singing. Since then the 21 year-old who’s now Guest judge Nicole Scherzinger from Pussycat Dolls studying English at Leicester University has performed locally many times at the Christmas light switch on and Firework Fiesta to name but a few. Craig went on to win the Top Notch Factor competition at the Broadway and even got through to X Factor when he was just 16. Martin said – “Craig’s been singing for as long as I can remember. He just loves it, he’s always singing at home and has made several public appearances. Craig went to Jack Hunt school where JLS star Aston Merrygold was a student but Martin says at that time he was much quieter than he is now! www.esp m ag .co.u k ( S e pte mbe r )
Craig Saggers (right) and friend Joe
“He thinks I’m in for a bit of a shock when I see his performance on TV but he can’t shock me any more! “He’s tried X Factor before a few years back and got through three rounds but now thinks he’s got what they’re looking for to stand out from the crowd. We’re all looking forward to seeing him on TV.” On this year’s X Factor a series of guest judges will join Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole as they audition thousands of hopefuls at arenas across the country in front of a live audience. Dannii Minogue will return to her judging duties at the Judges’ Houses stage of the competition. Joining Simon, Louis and Cheryl at the auditions will be Geri Halliwell (Glasgow), Natalie Imbruglia (Birmingham), Pixie Lott (Cardiff), this month’s ESP cover star Katy Perry (Dublin) and Nicole Scherzinger (Manchester and Bootcamp). Craig auditioned in Manchester in front of Pussycat Dolls’ singer Nicole, so let’s get ready for some Diva Fever and see if Craig can get the thumbs up! Watch the X Factor on Saturdays on ITV1 hosted by Dermot O’Leary and get all the behind the scenes updates with the Xtra Factor on ITV2 with new host Konnie Huq.

Can you tell us a bit about the show you'll be performing at the South Holland centre? “It's based on the show The Nearly Naked Chef that I did at last year’s Edinburgh Festival that we're now taking on tour around the country. It's a fairly open vibe, a bit of cooking and stories about my life. I'll do two courses, so in the first half I'll be cooking a poncey starter and then a main dish which is always a curry of some sort as it seems daft not to. I've never been to Spalding before, but I try to use local ingredients in each show so I'll be looking to see what this part of Lincolnshire has to offer.” You finished runner-up in the first series of Celebrity Masterchef to Matt Dawson. Will there be any stories about that in the show? “Yes. There's actually quite a big story I tell in the show about Masterchef that's worth waiting for.” You were also involved in what I consider to be one of the biggest travesties in BBC TV history when Alan Sugar sacked you instead of Piers Morgan on the Comic Relief episode of The Apprentice in 2008! How tempted were you to smash up the boardroom or reach across and wipe the smug smile off Piers' face? “You know, it was just one of those things. I did feel hard done by at the time, but you have to look at the bigger picture. The show was part of Comic Relief and it helped to raise a lot of money for a great cause and that's what it was all about really.” Right: hypothetical question. Let's say you're in a hot air balloon with Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Anthony Worral Thompson and the balloon's rapidly losing height. Who would you throw out in order to save the rest ? “Well, Gordon and Jamie are both my mates, plus Gordon's a Scotsman like me so it'd have to be Anthony. He's a nice guy and everything, but friendship takes precedence I'm afraid.” For tickets to see Hardeep’s show in Spalding call 01775 764777.
I'M TALKING 'BOUT HARDEEP “What could be more memorable than a fat Glasweigan Sikh cooking dinner whilst telling anecdotes? That's right: nothing.” Not my words people, but the words of TV presenter turned cookery chef Hardeep Singh Kohli. Big 'H' is in Spalding on Thursday September 23 to perform his comedy cookery show The Nearly Naked Chef at the South Holland Centre. Of course he follows in a long-line of famous faces who’ve visited Spalding over the years, none more so than Jimi Hendrix who played a gig at the town’s cattle auction hall in 1967. The pub across from the South Holland Centre (The Red Lion) even has a plaque on the wall that says 'Jimi slept here!' Bearing that in mind I'm hoping Hardeep will serve up a Hendrix-inspired treat for locals when he visits… or at the very least set fire to his frying pan at the end. Anyway, here's what happened when we had a quick chat on the phone recently. www.es p m ag .co.u k ( S e pte mbe r )
THE LAST LAUGH I couldn’t let the last ever series of Last Of The Summer Wine disappear for a life of endless repeats on UK Gold without a brief mention. I've never been a regular watcher, but as it's Britain’s longest running sitcom, spanning 31 series since 1973, I forced myself to watch the last ever episode. If you missed it (and I'm guessing most of you did) then don't worry, you didn't miss much. For me the highlight wasn't the sentimental send-off, but the sight of Russ Abbott wearing what was clearly a wig. I'd hoped in the final scene we'd see it blow off his bonce and hurtle down a hill in a tin bath – but sadly I have to report that it stayed glued firmly in place. Oh well, never mind – I'm sure it won't be the last we see of it... Strictly Come Dancing's back on TV soon, and that just wouldn't be the same with a bald Bruce Forsyth would it?
STOP MESSING WITH THE 80s Another month and another pointless Hollywood remake. In July it was the A-Team, (or as it should’ve been called the Dis’A’pointing Team ) and last month it was The Karate Kid remake which was so flawed I don't know where to begin. The most jarring part is when Jackie Chan says to Will Smith’s spoilt brat of a son Jaden – “I will teach you Kung Fu.” Err, Kung Fu? But this is meant to be the Karate Kid. That's like Burgess Meredith turning around to Sylvester Stallone in Rocky and saying – “Sure kid, I'll teach you Judo”. It's not what the film’s about Jackie, it’s karate… ka-ra-te. The clue’s in the title The Karate Kid. How does a man who’s been in hundreds of martial arts film not know the difference? What a douche. The only way to stop all these unnecessary remakes is for there to be a law for all classic TV shows and films of yesteryear like there is for listed buildings so that people aren't able to mess around with them.

Released: October 1 Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Samantha Mathis Director: Rodrigo Cortes What would be the worst way to die?
We’ve all had our nightmare scenarios such as a plane crash, getting eaten by a Jaws-sized shark, being ripped apart by a pack of angry wolves, or swallowed whole by an anaconda snake (okay so the last couple were tongue-in-cheek but you get the idea) – but right up there must be being buried alive. You may have seen the trailer being bandied about at the Showcase over the past couple of weeks, but unfortunately star Ryan Reynolds won’t be able to use any of his special Green Lantern special powers (he stars as the DC Comics’ superhero next year) in this claustrophobic thriller which is getting early rave reviews. Reynolds stars as US contractor Paul Conroy who finds himself buried in a coffin deep in Iraqi soil after an attack. With only a lighter, a mobile phone with limited reception and only ninety minutes of oxygen, it’s a race against time to find a way out of this nightmarish death trap. Unless he’s Uma Thurman from Kill Bill Vol. 2 and he can punch his way through the casket and 2,500 feet of soil it’s not looking good…

Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock and Co. come up with an amiable, but brainless, summer buddy comedy that was always going to make money – as five pals go away for a 4th of July weekend jolly – despite this juvenile comedy adventure being anything but grown up.
This coming-of-age biopic of seventies teenage band The Runaways sees The Twilight Saga: Eclipse costars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning – who star as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie respectively – shine in this drama which is getting generally favourable reviews across the pond.

His only ally is ex-hooker Lilah (Transformers’ Megan Fox) as Hex treads the line between the ‘real world’ and the ‘next’ after being left-for-dead and having half his face disfigured by a branding iron. Wonder if it's as bad as everyone's making out.
This western-inspired thriller sees the gunslinging bounty-hunter given pardon for death warrants on his head in return for taking out terrorist Turnbull (John Malkovich) – who’s piecing together an army to unleash hell.
RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE Released: September 10 We’ve all been clamouring for the fourth instalment of the critically-acclaimed horror series, which is now excitingly in 3D. I’ll stop the sarcasm now, only just to say it still stars Milla Jovivich and the good-looking guy from Prison Break, whose name evades me…

Released: September 17
Released: September 24
This is one action-comedy that is meant to deliver in a summer devoid of any really notable laughs, as Will Ferrell (who re-teams with Anchorman director Adam McKay) co-stars with Mark Wahlberg as two mismatched NYPD detectives trying to emulate their cop idols.
Julia Roberts picks a gem every couple of years, and this journey of self-discovery based on the Elizabeth Gilbert memoir – which sees her divorcee stuff her face in Italy, find prayer in India and love in Bali – could engage audiences once again with support from Javier Bardem and James Franco.

KANE & LYNCH 2: DOG DAYS
THE SIMS 3: AMBITIONS
N3: NINETYNINE NIGHTS II
(X360/PS3/PC) Out now
(X360) Released: Sept 10
(PC/MAC) Out now
It’s without doubt the biggest release of the month and it’s probably one of the most improved franchises on next-gen consoles.
This sequel doesn’t really improve on the original to compete with recent similar genre-definers such as Dante's Inferno, Darksiders and PS3 exclusive God of War III.
For Sims-aholics this is the substantial expansion they’ve been waiting for – with a wealth of career offerings to expand your world.
After the first game underwhelmed, the sequel has ironed out the flaws with much improved gaming mechanics – most notably the shooting and cover system – as the duo try to escape from an atmospheric Shanghai underworld in this third-person shooter.
There’s a grim sense of satisfaction when chalking up a chain of brutal slayings in this mythical world, but sadly the distinctly hack ‘n’ slash style grows tiresome very quickly.
Throw in a really impressive multiplayer experience and you’d be barking mad to miss it.
It’s not without its merits with a notable storyline, but sadly the developers are still partying like it’s 1999 instead of 2010.
Within the Sims 3 universe your job experiences mostly see you disappearing for the day, but now it’s possible to become everything from a firefighter or private investigator to a tattooist or even a ghost hunter, as new elements are impressively added.

TOURNAMENT OF LEGENDS

LARA CROFT & THE GUARDIAN OF LIGHT
Right about now I usually get on my soapbox to complain about how little EA have added to their yearly sports updates – however good the previous version was.
The Wii may be devoid of many 3D fighters, but anyone with experiences of Tekken and Virtua Fighter will know this is at least half a decade out of date.
But this version has been notably honed to offer a more simplistic pick up ‘n’ play streamlined style for the casual player – but sadly at the expense of the hardcore fan.
Only real fighting enthusiasts will get their kicks from nunchuking their way to victory with mythical legends such as Minotaur and Medusa, but sluggish controls and dated graphics dampen the experience.
With scaled-back franchise functions it doesn’t quite get the balance right, but pound-for-pound it still scores an impressive touchdown.
If you’re not a fan this isn’t likely to tempt you to the series, but if you are this is gravy.
(X360/PS3/PC) Out now If this is the yardstick that’s going to be used regarding the quality of downloadable games across gaming networks – then long may it continue. The spirit of the female tomb raider has been retained despite a simplistic top-down view through this ancient world – which can also become a co-op experience.

There’s some fun to be had between friends, but the novelty will wear very quickly.
With up to four-player accessibility across suitably varied – if sometimes unnecessarily complex – courses, there are worse ways to spend your money to have a good time with your mates.
It’s lightweight compared to other third-person shooters, but hugely enjoyable nevertheless.
It obviously doesn’t push racing boundaries with its intermittent clunkiness, but there’s more than a few hours worth of fun to be had.

The first of two hit-and-miss summer blockbusters is this Jerry Bruckheimer sword-and-sandals vehicle, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton and Ben Kingsley and ends up as an entertaining – if underwhelming – swashbuckling video-game adaptation.
Strong performances from Russell Crowe, and Cate Blanchett in particular, as hero Robin Hood and Maid Marion respectively, make this convoluted take on the English legend watchable fare, despite it never hitting the heights of Ridley Scott’s much-lauded Gladiator.

Kris Kristofferson
I gave you the nod that we’d be doing Cambridge Folk Festival this year and you know what? It was brilliant, one of the best yet. I heard lots of folk saying – “the line-up isn’t very strong this year” – well guess what? It’s not the artists you know that surprise you it’s the ones you don’t. Case in point would be The Quebe Sisters. Everyone who saw them at the festival was wowed by the tight harmonies and Texan swing rhythm that blew the crowd away. Or maybe the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a thirties style jug band trio that whooped and hollered their way through an hour of mayhem on the Radio 2 stage. The highlight for me though was (and I feel a small amount of guilty pleasure syndrome as I admit it) Kris Kristofferson. We were fortunate enough to go back stage and watch from about 20 meters away and for 70 minutes, like the 3,000 in the main marquee, we were spellbound. If you’re aware of the very late Johnny Cash stuff produced by Rick Rubin, this was of the same stature. A more magical and compelling set I can’t remember, it’s easy to see why this septuagenarian has endured. He even had enough charisma to forget the words of a song halfway through and get a monumental wave of cheers and applause from the crowd. I consider myself fortunate to have been there. Aside from that, the festival was better organised than ever, big screens for those who didn’t want the squeeze of the main marquee and as always helpful and friendly staff, see you next year!

Stayin’ in yellabelly country, my old mate Rockin’ Rooster has his Rockin’ Rumble Weekender over in Skegness also on September 17 - 19. Three days full of great rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly… With bands travelling over from the States and local legends like the Hicksville Bombers playing, it won’t be a festival you sit down at, dancing and jiving will be the norm. You can expect great DJs, clothes stalls and cool as
Boomtown Fair in Buckinghamshire was an amazing experience, a mere baby at three years old but it’s already selling out in advance. The Dub Pistols were great as were Pronghorn but even better was the set up. Picture an apocalyptic down town New Orleans inhabited by mutants, stilt walkers fire-breathing trees and a motley crew of hippies, crustys and neon-clad ravers and you’re starting to get the picture. The soundtrack to this human circus was ska, reggae dub, rockabilly and a myriad of DJs… it was brilliant. There were a few complaints of dodgy loos and the now obligatory tent robbing but nothing to put a dampener on this hedonistic holocaust. If you want a mad one next year, put it in your diary… BOOMTOWN! This month up in the Lincolnshire countryside, Scholey Park near Tattershall to be precise, is Alchemy Festival. This grassroots, homespun style festival offers music, dance, art, poetry and loads of kids stuff, just to scratch the surface. The festival runs from September 17 to 19 is a riotous mix of the senses with bands such as local heroes Kissmet, with their mix of east-west vibes and Imperial Leisure whose live set is a jug of ska, hip hop, rock and kerfuffle and is setting festys and venues alight around the country. Also playing are Hobo Jones and the Junkyard Dogs who are just the best skiffle tramp band in the country. Banco De Gaio is also on a very busy line up so if he’s your ting you are in. In general expect a theatrical weekend full of carnival, party, great people and
you like (no cooler than that) cars drifting around Skeggy into the night. It’s all being held at the Marine Boathouse and weekend tickets are just £30. Phil… you are giving them away! LIVE MUSIC
Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
BANK HOLIDAY BAND FEST A timely reminder that on Bank Holiday Sunday August 29, you can enjoy a really strong music line-up at the Thorney Live charity music festival. The line-up looks great and has Aladdinsane (in a rare local appearance these days), The Pigs (Police tribute), Motor City Vipers, Mighty Quinn, One Eyed Cats, Halo, Dan Elliman and Simon Russell. It’s all being held In the grounds of the Bedford Hall, in Station Road, Thorney. It starts at 11.30am and carries on until dusk. Something for the whole family. More details on www.thorneylive.co.uk.
TRIBUTE TIME Whatever your taste in music, I think both Stamford and Bourne Corn Exchange will be catering for you in the next few weeks with a strong line up of tribute acts.
September 4 - Bourne Ohasis – They say they try very hard to make an Ohasis gig as authentic and as up to date as possible, performing Oasis songs in their most current live form, getting the look and attitude of the band spot on. Does this mean an on stage punch up is guaranteed?
September 9 - Stamford Robbie Williams Banned – Features Matt Byrne as Robbie, fronting a line-up of seven stunning musicians and performers. Fresh off a summer of playing major festivals with a full stage and light show.
September 11 - Stamford
CANDLE THIEVES EP
As I always say, there’s so much musical talent in the area and for proof of that, I suggest you check out the Candle Thieves. They have a new EP released on September 13. It’s titled The Happiness Blues EP and features the very appealing and catchy Sunshine Song together with three brand new recordings. It’s a follow up to their album Sunshine & Other Misfortunes which was released in April. The Candle Thieves – Scott and Glock – who studied music together at college here in Peterborough, went their own separate ways in order to achieve success in the music world. Both have toured extensively and tasted the high life, but met up again and discovered that they both craved the chance to make music that was more simple and intimate. They write the songs together and the latest example of their collaboration is The Happiness Blues EP. It’s really worth listening to it and you can catch them on Thursday September 9 at their pre-release party at Mojo (downstairs at what was The City Club) and again on Friday September 24 at The Grange, Netherton UTD club house. For more info go to www.facebook.com/thecandlethieves.
Rave On – Rock and roll nostalgia celebrating the music of Buddy Holly.
September 18 – Bourne Roxy Magic – They recreate material from the super cool Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music which spans four decades.
September 25 - Stamford The Bon Jovi Experience – They reckon they’re the only Bon Jovi tribute band in the world to have actually played and shared a stage with Jon Bon Jovi himself! Details and ticket information at: www.stamford-cornexchange.co.uk or www.bournecornexchange.co.uk
Talking of tributes, a quick reminder that the Peterborough Beer Festival on Saturday August 28 features the incredible Who’s Who, whilst on the previous night everybody’s classics are ‘punked- up’ by the spectacular League of Mentalmen. Heaven knows who they’re a tribute to?!
HEADING EAST (COAST) Those who are familiar with country and blues duo East Coast will have been eagerly looking forward to the unveiling of their expanded line-up to a four piece band. Original members, Nigel Lavender and Nick Thorpe have been joined by David Block on drums and Chris Thompson on bass. After a summer of rehearsing they’re making their live debut at the Railway Inn, Ramsey on Saturday September 11. If you can’t make that date then the following week (September 18), East Coast are at The Angel in Yarwell. And hopefully, unlike their rail namesake, they won’t start late…

BANDS @ THE DEEPING STAGE The Deeping Stage always provides a strong bill of music on Bank Holidays and August 29 is a good example. From mid afternoon you get a chance to see four bands. The approx timings are: 3pm Feet to the Fire, 5pm The Nuggets, 7pm The Guards and to round the evening off at 9pm it’s Circa73 .
RICH BECOMES ISIAH
News for fans of the Richard Hall Band. They are no more. The good news is that they’ve changed their name to Isiah. Now I like that name – wonder where it came from? They’re still playing the same blend of rock/blues that we’ve seen them perform many times and they have a new album out called In The Wings. You can get a copy at their next local dates which are on Saturday September 4 at Charters and September 18 at the Cellar Bar on Thorpe Road. If you want more info then you can Facebook Isiah or Richard Hall band.

STING IN THE TALE FOR QUINNY I popped into the Cock Inn the other night to see The Mighty Quinn, and discovered that the city was nearly robbed of one of our finest when the bands bassist Paul Allen (aka ‘Laup’), was in an unpleasant encounter with a scorpion in Central America. Our intrepid explorer told me that he was in Bogata, Columbia on a motorbike jaunt when stung on his wrist by one of the creatures. “It **!** hurt” was his medical analysis. Fortunately for us all the injury was treated, he arrived back the previous evening and got to the gig, jet lagged and arm swollen but managed to turn in a fine performance.

CALLING ALL MUSICIANS – STRUM WOT YA BRUNG RETURNS!
Strum Wot Ya Brung returns to the Westwood Hotel on Mayors Walk again on September 29. It’s an open mic night that attracts some good talent and all proceeds go to East Anglian Air Ambulance. As well as watching some of Peterborough’s freshest talent on stage, there’s also a raffle. If you fancy taking part, turn up early on the night – don’t get too nervous, the crowd is always friendly and all styles of music are welcome.
GOLDBLADE @ CLUB REV
Punk rock ‘n’ roll legends Goldblade come to Club Revolution on October 21. Featuring former Membranes singer John Robb, they specialise in old school punk rock – expect a little bit of melody as well as powerful guitars and insane drumming. They’ve toured all over Europe and were the first western rock band to play in Algiers. This is a warm up for their forthcoming tour to China, then Brazil and the band have a reputation for incendiary live shows.
Tickets £8. Box office: 01733 310383 or www.clubrevolutionrocks.com
BEERS, TEARS AND CHEERS Last month, The Ploughman in Werrington hosted a charity karaoke and X Factor night which saw loads of people attend! Everyone had a great time and people were singing their hearts out – although admittedly, some were a lot better than others! The organisers, C.U.P Ministry are aiming to get a new Young Peoples Enterprise Centre built in Peterborough, Inspired by the tragic death of Big Issue Seller Andrea Lenaghan and the suicide of 17 year-old Rachel, the centre will give the young people of the city hope and inspiration – especially during these difficult financial times. The crowd at The Ploughman really got behind the case, donating all their spare cash – although as there was a beer dedicated to Andrea’s memory, it may have been even easier than expected for people to part with their dosh. £1 million needs to be raised, so if you think you can help then don’t hesitate to get in touch. Although it is a Christian organisation behind the project, the Youth Enterprise Centre will be completely secular and everyone – Christian, Muslim, young, old, rich or poor – is welcome to help out. Call Minister Antony Slack on 01733 702533 or 07960 961040. Email antony.slack@ntlworld.com

GIG REVIEW
WE BUILT THIS CITY… Last month saw Peterborough overtaken by all kinds of punk bands thanks to the Infest festival at Club Revolution – and the highlight for this reporter was definitely Demented Are Go and Frantic Flintstones on August 7. Widely known as one of the best psychobilly bands around, they sounded like Mötorhead in a bar brawl with Elvis – which is a good thing, by the way! Joined onstage by Keofte, the singer from Germany’s Mad Sin (who are also coming to Club Rev on January 27) this was a truly electrifying experience. The whole club was packed, with people travelling from all over the country to see this amazing line-up. Supporting them were Frantic Flinstones, Luna Vegas, Cowboy And The Corpse, Go Go Cult and Killer B Movie. Frantic Flintstones had a slightly more Nashville sound – think the ghost of Hank Williams possessing a UK punk band and leaving them in the gutter of Graceland. Luna Vegas had a more surf style sound, you could hear the Cramps in their Honolulu voodoo style punk. Cowboy And The Corpse were a bit different, more street punk than the other bands and sounded a hell of a lot better once they’d plugged their guitar in! In all, it was one of the best gig’s I’ve been to, let alone one of the best gigs in Peterborough. Other highlights of the two-week festival were Agnostic Front, the Anti Nowhere League and of course, The Ruined. If you missed out, Club Revolution has loads more gigs lined up this month, including Nothington on September 4, Heart of a Coward on September 10, Failsafe and Radicus on September 24 and Elephant Vs. Leopard on September 25.

Jessica Weaver – Miss Posh participating in promotional events throughout the season.
An extra touch of glamour’s been added to the Peterborough United home games! Local 24 year-old Jess Weaver has been named as ‘Miss Posh’ for this season – the first since the late 70s! Jess is an old friend of ESP. She made the top six finalists in the Face of ESP two years ago (very narrowly missing out to Claire Smith), has done promotional work and modelled for us. At the first home game of the season, I caught up with Miss Posh to see how she’s finding her new role.

“When I saw the competition advertised I knew I wanted to be Miss Posh,” Jess told me. “As I’ve been given this opportunity, I want to make the most out of representing the club. This is the start of my fifteenth season supporting the team, and I’m as optimistic as ever about what we will achieve.” To celebrate 50 years in the league, local girls competed for the chance to join Mr Posh in leading the teams out at every home game. And with Mr Posh being such a well respected tradition within the football club, it’s no wonder the competition became so popular. Jess fought off stiff competition and won by receiving over 1500 votes in just a couple of weeks! So, how did Jess feel when she found out she’d won? “Ecstatic! I was at work when I found out but still jumped and squealed. People probably thought I was completely mad. I was so happy but also relieved after the two weeks of voting which I found very nerve wracking.” Posh press officer, Phil Adlam, also took the time to explain how Jess will become a regular face around the club. He told me Miss Posh will not only walk the team onto the pitch, but will present on the online TV station PUTV, as well as
Jessica’s best memories of Posh... Posh vs Barnet (1999/2000) “The hat-trick David Farrell scored in the play-off semi-final at London Road to secure our place at Wembley made the game one of my most memorable and magical experiences watching Posh.”

Posh vs Darlington (1999/2000) “Play-off final at Wembley. Not the best game I’ve ever seen, and not easily enjoyed because the stakes were so high, but a brilliant Andy Clarke goal ensured Posh were promoted and the city celebrated!”
Darlington vs Posh (2001/2002) “It was the FA Cup and after the initial fixture was postponed, the tie was rearranged for a Tuesday
night and Newcastle United had been selected to play the winners in the next round. The stand was like a wooden shack and it was a freezing winter evening. We were one-nil down and gutted when the ref awarded Darlo a penalty, and much to our delight they didn’t score at the first attempt, or the second after the ref insisted it be retaken. The match finally finished two-all after Jimmy Bullard scored a penalty, after we’d questioned whether he should be taking it at all after missing a couple in a previous game. We beat
Whilst speaking to Jess at half time during Posh vs Bristol Rovers, I found her very friendly and approachable... but more importantly I could see she was a genuine fan of our city’s team. She said now she has the title, she’ll definitely make the most of it – “Really, I just want to enjoy every second of the season. This is a once in a lifetime experience and I want to have fun, meet as many Posh fans as possible and fingers crossed – enjoy a promotion season. In the future I will be so proud to tell people I was Miss Posh and I’m sure it will be something I’ll never forget.” So is Jess a TRUE Posh fan...? Let’s see how she did with my on the spot Posh Quiz! 1. As Miss Posh, you have No. 10 on your shirt. Who is number 10 in the team? George Boyd! (Correct). 2. In what year was Peterborough United founded? 1934 – It was our 75th anniversary last season wasn’t it? (It was, well done!) 3. What position in the table did we finish last season? We were rock bottom of the Championship, sadly 24th. (Unfortunately true). 4. Who has scored the most ever goals for Peterborough United? I’m not sure. My Mum thinks it could be Jim Hall! (I’m not going to give you this one, but well done mum). 5. Who scored our first goal this season? George Boyd – lovely goal. (Also correct, and yes it was!) Well done, 4 out of 5 correct – Very impressive. It would have been 5 if I’d accepted her mum’s answer! Mikey Clarke
Darlington in the replay at London Road and set up the tie with Newcastle. I can understand why Darlington fans are not so fond of Posh.”
Posh vs Cardiff (2009/2010) “After being four goals down at half time, Posh somehow managed to claw back to get a draw from the game. Miracles can happen!” Mikey Clarke
