LOVE FASHION? PASS IT ON! Would you like to wear some fabulous clothes and save yourself money? Wear it Love it Share it comes to Queensgate Shopping Centre on Saturday September 17 supported by ESP Magazine, showcasing modern and vintage fashion chosen from Peterborough charity shops. ESP loves fashion and has teamed up with the Wear it Love it Share campaign of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership to stage the fashion shows. Running from 11am – 3pm there’ll be fashion shows featuring the
new Face of ESP as well as previous winners and ESP models at 11am, 12pm and 2pm. The aim is to show that there are fabulous fashion bargains to be found at the city’s charity shops, and how passing on your unwanted clobber can make a difference to both the planet and local good causes. Various charity shops will have clothes for sale and if you bring your unwanted clothes to donate, a fiver to spend at the stalls is on offer to every lucky 20th donator. Charities miss out on £1.5 billion every year when people throw clothes away rather than donating them. If you no longer want an item of clothing, show a little love and share it with others. As long as they’re clean, charity shops and textile banks will welcome all clothes. They’ll turn these into much needed funds for good causes. Even rags can earn some money for charities. Find your nearest places to donate at www.recap.co.uk/pass-it-on and follow the Love it Wear it Share it event on www.facebook.com/wearit

NIGHT FEVER HITTING THE TOWN? Welcome Fever Bar & Clubroom – the newest addition to our city’s night scene. This summer has already seen a couple of new offerings in the way of bars with the opening of the Vineyard and North Street Bar but it might not be stopping with Fever. Another boost to our night-time economy could see the space formerly occupied by Shooters bar re-opened by the owners of Halo. Word is there are plans for it to be an over-21s venue and names banded around for it include the Love Lounge or Ghost. Either way, thinking about it is mustering up images of Demi Moore so it’s thumbs up from me whichever name they choose. More about this when I get something official. There’s also a suggestion that we’ll see the legendary 5th Avenue venue swing open its doors again. Sadly, we’re probably not going to see a 90s throwback of a club with Howard and Suzanne at the helm and a resident DJ with a fake Ferrari (good times). My sources tell me we’re to expect an over-25s establishment complete with a restaurant. Again, watch this space. As for Fever, well firstly I’m confident it’ll be here to stay. It’s one of 13 other Fever’s across the country and the guys behind the concept obviously know what they’re doing. The venue (formerly Baccara) is split into two rooms (upstairs and downstairs) and overall capacity is approximately 600. Fever is on the ground floor. It’s retro and great if you like it old school with tunes from the past 30 years. Upstairs is Boutique. Here you’ll get a slice of commercial dance and R&B. What’s great about the entire venue is there’s no age appeal – the only appeal is for people wanting to go out and have a good time. Another big pull is affordable drinks, plus lots of special offers – and the fact there’s no initial entrance fee except for a pocket-stretching 99p after 11pm Thursdays and only a few quid after 11pm Saturdays. This place is three bars and two venues five nights a week. Let’s embrace it.

It’s been and gone but don’t we just love it eh? Social, ‘fun’, bad breath, orange puke, exs, school ‘chums’, mud, ear ache, ginger wine, quiz, souvenir, shish kebab, Ian, bands, rolled -up knickers, portaloos, pebble-dash, cloudy, Mikey, Anadin Extra, ulcer, sweaty, one-night stand, flip-flops, lavender, Slater, stench, surprise, toe rings and good times.
KEEPING IT TWO WHEELS IN WINTER Fair weather motorcyclists like me haven’t got too many weeks left to enjoy our miserable summer so a reason for me to keep it two wheels throughout the winter is a ride to the Springfields Motorbike Show on January 14 and 15. The Springfields Exhibition Centre in Spalding has already put on a great bike show – for classic bike lovers – where I drooled over dozens of beautiful machines like a 1960s Triumph T90. Expect more of the same including new bikes, custom ones and celebrity guests including owners clubs, auto-jumble stands and traders at the January event. Check out www.springfields bikeshow.co.uk for details.

WIN BIKE AT ROLL OF A DICE Lads, some of you might be unlucky enough to be dragged along by your bird to the Burghley Horse Trials this month (September 1 to 4) but every cloud (because it’ll rain) has a silver lining. Man About Town sponsors Balderston are giving people the chance to win a motorcycle on the throw of a dice. It’s simple. Throw seven sixes and the bike – a G650 GS – like the one I’m pictured in front of, is yours. The odds might look like they’re stacked against you but it’s worth knowing that bikes have been won like this before. To test ride what you could be winning (or could’ve won) give BMW dealership Balderston a call on 01733 565470. Just by test riding any BMW you’ll get a free sixmonth subscription to Motorcycle Magazine and entry into a draw to win the cost of the bike back if you buy it because you didn't win it at Burghley.
RAFT RACE PIT STOP Our Becca, Sadie and Harri helped me ‘Pap’ the Deepings Raft Race and a big thanks to Richard at Harley’s Diner who laid on some prepaparazzi drinks and grub for Becca (apologies if she cleared you out). Thanks to Sadie’s rubbish sense of direction the drive home took longer than the last raft to come in but it was a fab day nonetheless. Despite the girls stopping every five minutes to stroke dogs, flapping at ‘killer’ wasps and drooling over cupcakes – we did manage a load of great snaps which you can see on pages 24 and 25.

Matty Speaks... Well my speaky bit this month has to be about the exciting start of the football season. After years of heavy drinking weekends and late night gigs, I’ve finally decided to sign up for a Saturday football team, and not just any football team but the mighty Ryhall United 3rd Team! As well as playing in the Robert Windle league on Thursday nights with the Van Stam All Stars who I’m the captain of (although this position is questioned every week by the other players on my team!) I’m looking forward to feeling the fitness from all the footie I’ll be playing (as long as I’m not warming the bench!) over the next season. I’m also hoping my team – Millwall – hammer the Posh when they meet next season!
PINE HILL HAINTS RETURN TO MAMA’S! The Pine Hill Haints (from Alabama, USA) will be taking to the stage at Mama’s in a must-see performance on Monday September 26. After wowing the crowds at last year's sell out show, the band make a much anticipated return to the Voodoo Lounge, Stamford. Taking inspiration from roots music and Southern tales of the supernatural, the Pine Hill Haints play a self-described style of ‘Alabama ghost country’ blending elements of various genres including (but by no means limited to) old time country music, honky tonk, rockabilly, folk, and bluegrass. With an amazingly energetic show, this will be one of the best Monday night's you'll ever have! Tickets are £8 in advance, £10 on the door.

Glenn Roberts from the Toreador After a very enjoyable gig at the Toreador recently I met up with the bar manager Glenn Roberts to make a return to my Q & A! What’s your favourite place to go out in Stamford?
MEET THE LUX TECHNICAL TEAM A quick shout out to my good mate Peter Gibbons and his business partner Jamie Mangan who’ve started a new business venture called Lux Technical providing technical support, in the form of sound lighting and multimedia, to the performing arts industry, education sector and business. Hats off to these two young entrepreneurs who are giving it a go in difficult times. Pete’s worked many a time at the Key Theatre and Stamford Arts Centre and Jamie’s worked for the National Youth Theatre and had work experience in the offices of Sir Cameron Mackintosh and did a month on Oliver! in the West End. They’ve started the company from scratch offering multimedia solutions, event lighting, sound reproduction, equipment hire and event management, and are getting busier by the day at their new base in Langtoft. So if you need anything special maybe for a wedding, birthday party or launch of a new product check www.luxtechnical.co.uk or call the lads on 01778 560060.

paparazzi Caught in the act? WET ‘N’ WILD TIMES @ THE RAFT RACE We just love wonderfully eccentric British events and the Deepings Raft Race returned last month and didn’t disappoint! Pep Cipriano headed down with his camera and the ESP Paparazzi girls, Harriadnie and Sadie to capture all the fun and frolics! The Deepings community really got behind this annual event with everyone enjoying the music and entertainment throughout the town centre and raising funds for charity. This was the first year the Rotary Club had taken the helm and there was a brilliant turn out. Congratulations to Weir Sunk who won the main race, Deepings Direct who had the best dressed raft with their Alice in Wonderland theme, the Deepings Devils – ladies from the rugby club, who won the ladies race and Langtoft Primary for winning the school banner competition. There’s a trophy presentation at the Towngate Inn on September 5 from 6.45pm so pop down to collect your prizes and meet the sponsors. Don’t forget to get your sponsor money in! .

CELEBS
Pop’s coolest girl band has transformed once again with a new line-up stepping out with new material and on a new label… The Sugababes are, it’s agreed, particularly by most blokes in the ESP office – babes! With the latest addition of Jade Ewen (replacing Keisha) the threesome of Amelle Berrabah and Heidi Range are certainly looking hot and ticking all the pop boxes. So, fashion sense – tick. Looks – tick. Tunes…? Well with new single Freedom about to hit the streets on September 26 you can decide for yourselves. The girls though have already made their mind up, and let’s say they’re just a little hyper about it all! “We want everyone to be as excited about [the new album] as we are and Sony have that same passion that we do,” says Heidi, who’s thrilled to have joined the label after ten years with Island Records. “Island were great and had done so much for us but it is nice to go in somewhere new – ‘cause it’s new for us as well.”
“It’s a whole new start,” says Amelle of their new home with RCA, bringing them to the same label as some of the biggest names in Urban pop like Beyonce, Shakira and Alicia Keys. Ever since the Sugababes hit the charts in 2000 (yes it is that long ago!) their music styles have changed as frequently as their line-up and yet they’ve remained one of the best selling girl groups. “We’re lucky in the fact we can get away with testing different genres of music and can go harder and then more pop,” says Amelle of the bands’ continuing changing sound. “Even as a fan of The Sugababes,” adds newcomer Jade, “they were always so cool and weren’t afraid to be different and they brought in those other urban influences in a commercial way that everyone could appreciate.” Incredibly, in the fast paced ‘here today gone tomorrow’ world of pop, the Sugababes are about to release their eighth studio album! Yep, the Sugababes even entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful female act of the 21st Century. New single, Freedom is bursting with energy and attitude, with an anthemic chorus and a dub-step breakdown in the second half proving once again these girls will push the boundaries. Latest member Jade has had to make the difficult transition from being a fan to becoming part of the band’s line-up, but says she’s now feeling 100 per cent Sugababe!
“Although I was on [last Sugababes album] Sweet 7,” reflects Jade, “the album was already done and I came in and recorded the vocals. But this time we’ve been together from the beginning of the process and we’ve talked about things that we do and don’t like.” The girls have spent time getting to know each other better and creating a girlie vibe and say the whole writing and recording process has brought them closer together. “Our voices have gelled together, definitely,” states Heidi. “Even our band have commented on it [during private gigs] and our vocal coach has noticed lately and said our voices really blend. Our music has always been focused on three part harmonies which has been the consistent thing, but it’s always been about the vocals.” Freedom is also the official track to the new Nokia N8 Pink ad, which is sheer unadulterated Barbie doll-drama! The girls show their cheeky side is very much still intact with their own tattooed, laser shooting alter-ego dolls, showcasing Nokia’s latest mobile creation. “What we do is a thing that people dream of doing and we enjoy every minute – we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t care passionately about it,” says Jade. “We can’t wait to tour and we’d love to have a number one!” Who knows, Freedom might just be the one. www.sugababes.com

Salon owner Kai Wan is one of the six finalists for the Eastern Hairdresser Of The Year Award and stylist Donna Tovey is one of the six finalists for the Newcomer Hairdresser Of The Year Award in HJ’s 2011 British Hairdressing Awards. Think the Oscars of the hairdressing world and you’ll grasp just how significant this comeptition is so it’s fingers crossed for the PKai finalists! The British Hairdressing Awards were launched in 1984 by Hairdressers Journal International and sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, and have celebrated and rewarded the best of British hairdressing creativity for 27 years. To enter the competition, hairdressers working in salons throughout the United Kingdom have to submit four images, which fulfil the criteria. Kai and Donna now have to submit another four images, which will be judged along with the first four by industry experts, members of the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame and hair journalists from the most influential, and fashion aware consumer magazines.
“Each year the standard of entries in each category becomes more creative and inspirational,” comments Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Hairdressers Journal International, Jayne Lewis-Orr. “British hairdressing is perceived throughout the world as being the best, and the British Hairdressing Awards recognise and reward creativity and excellence in hairdressing skills. Kai is a very worthy finalist.” Kai and Donna will both have to wait until Monday November 28, to find out if they’ve won their respective categories, when they attend a glittering awards ceremony in London. Newcomer Of The Year Finalist, Donna told ESP – “I was delighted when I received my letter telling me I’d made it to the finals.” Kai added – “This year’s been an incredible one for the salon. To be recognised by your peers as being one of the country's leading hairdressers and being involved in the British Hairdressing Awards is both a wonderful feeling and a great achievement." Good luck guys!

Hopefully production problems have been solved as this disappeared off the radar earlier this year after positive web-buzz. This sci-fi horror reveals the reason we’ve never been back to the moon when American astronauts get into a spot of bother after being sent on a secretive mission to our lunar cousin.
Positive reviews Stateside unfortunately didn’t lead to a positive box-office take for this stylishly gory remake of the 1985 cult horror classic, despite reportedly impressive performances from David Tennant and Colin Farrell – with the latter starring as a new neighbour with a bloodthirsty dark secret.
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS Released: September 9 Pop icon Justin Timberlake continues to grow as a movie star in his own right, this time thinking it’s a piece of cake adding sex to his friendship with Mila Kunis (who voices Megan Griffin in Family Guy) in this rom-com with great on-screen chemistry between the leads.
After the success of The Inbetweeners Movie, another heavily British-influenced film could just help prolong the recent resurgence of UK-based films at the box-office. There are high hopes for this remake of the 1979 espionage thriller mini-series (which starred the late Alec Guinness) based on John le Carre’s famous novel – with Gary Oldman headlining an all-star cast. He stars as disgraced spy George Smiley, who’s secretly rehired by the government at the height of the Cold War to track down a possible Soviet double agent who could be compromising the British Secret Intelligence Service, MI-6. With The King’s Speech’s Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth, the highly-sought after Tom Hardy (soon to play Batman villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises), the versatile Mark Strong and screen veteran John Hurt as just part of the acclaimed cast, this could be one to watch...

Straight-laced forty something Steve Carell has the world at his feet, until he realises his childhood sweetheart wife (Julianne Moore) has cheated on him. Completely out-of-the-loop when it comes to dating, he’s quickly taken under the wing of smooth ladies’ man Ryan Gosling to get back in the saddle.
With one of the best action trailers in quite some time, the amiably stereotyped Jason Statham stars as an ex-special ops agent lured out of retirement to rescue his mentor (Robert De Niro) from the clutches of Clive Owen, who has let loose three assassins to bring down Statham before he reaches his former boss.

For the first time the biggest ever sci-fi franchise hits Blu-ray – and with a plethora of fanboy extras it’s better than “bullseyeing a womp rat with a T-16.”. The Empire Strikes Back and (the now renamed) A New Hope are my two favourite movies of all-time, and I can unashamedly admit general enthusiasm for the prequel trilogy too – minus bouts of minor annoyance from the wooden acting. Even The Phantom Menace (supposedly the worst in the series) holds up with Jar-Jar Binks slowly becoming less

annoying with every watch – and the best lightsaber fight ever between Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Darth Maul. This is still spine-tingling stuff after nearly 35 years, and to me, Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia and particularly Harrison Ford’s Han Solo will always have a special geek-filled place in my heart. Cue the opening credits in glorious high-definition and pristine 6.1 DTS Surround Sound…

DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION (360/PS3/PC) Out now
As one of the most eagerly-anticipated releases of the year, the first next-gen outing for acclaimed PC hit Deus Ex doesn’t disappoint. Serving as a prequel to the original two cult classics, Eidos have served up one of the most adaptable games of a generation – offering an action shooter, RPG or a Splinter Cell-style stealth offering. Set in a futuristic 2027 – where controversial biomechanical human augmentations are common place – you take on the role of hero Adam Jensen, charged with tracking down the perpetrators of a terrorist attack on your employers.
Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviewing Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Ian Hilling for contributing to Captain America: Super Soldier and Fallout New Vegas: Old World Blues.
With countless upgrades, weapons and storyline options at your disposal, there’s something for everyone here – as you evolve Human Revolution in whatever direction you want – making Deus Ex a bona-fide contender for game of the year.

You could be forgiven for your pessimism when film-based video games are unleashed – but this is one of the best yet to feature a Marvel superhero.
* Offer valid until end of Sept.
Unsurprisingly this isn’t as good as Batman: Arkham Asylum, but competes with the last Spider-Man outing with decent combat, exploration and upgrades that does the shieldslinging American icon justice. Stereotypical repetitiveness and lack of longevity problems do hamper Cap Am – but SEGA are undoubtedly improving the genre.

HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2 (PS3/360/WII/DS/PC) Out now We all know movie tie-ins (see above) are plagued with short production times – and that’s all too apparent with the last non-LEGO Potter game. Despite whichever character is under your control, every level pretty much plays out the same – although it has some intermittently fun use of magic spells – which leaves this firmly for hardcore fans pining for more after the franchise finale. To say it’s better than Part 1 helps it cause – but sadly that isn’t saying much.
#####
FALLOUT NEW VEGAS: OLD WORLD BLUES (360/PS3/PC) Out now This is the finest downloadable content from one of last year’s best video games. After the disappointing Dead Money, and much better Honest Hearts, this great value-formoney DLC proves to be a five-star experience after everyone’s favourite Mojave courier is left without a brain, spine and heart.

FASTER (15) Out now Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson continues to impress as an action star – and adds another notably energetic performance to his growing repertoire in this high-octane flick. He dishes up revenge quickly and without remorse (sometimes quite gruesomely) as Driver, an innocent ex-con out for revenge for his brother’s death. This is clichéd stuff, but with Johnson aided by cop Billy Bob Thornton and young assassin Oliver Jackson-Cohen – neat twists push this comfortably above the usual action fare. If ya smell what The Rock is cookin’.

MY MASTERPLAN FOR PETERBOROUGH Part 2 Last month I unveiled Part 1 of my masterplan for Peterborough. Steps 1-3 involved selling the Hampton 'Tump' to Donald Trump for millions, but that was just the start. Here's what else I've got planned…
STEP FIVE – To help turn Peterborough United into a Premiership team I'll become a major share holder in Sky Sports. I'll do this by selling the naming rights to Bond World to a Russian oligarch who owns a vodka brand. Once I'm in Sky Sports I'll ensure Posh play all their matches on a different night to Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. Now, here's the important bit. I'll also make it legal (like it is in local football) for players to play for one team on a Saturday and another one on a Sunday. This will mean it'll be possible for players from the top four clubs to play for Posh and help get them promoted.

Tickets from £10, doors open at 7pm. Box office: 01733 265705. September

STEP FOUR – With my new found wealth I'll need somewhere flamboyant to live. Yeah sure, I could build a mansion on the outskirts of the city, but I'm much more inclined to construct a secret underwater lair in the big lake of Ferry Meadows. It'll rise in and out of the water on hydraulic legs. Similar to 'Atlantis' that Carl Stromberg the Bond villain had in The Spy Who Loved Me, except I won't be using it to take over the world... just Peterborough. Sir Roger Moore will cut the ribbon at the grand opening by arriving in his Lotus Esprit submarine car. My underwater lair will also double up as a 007 museum with memorabilia from the films and form part of James Bond World that'll be a theme park with rides etc. As scenes from two Bond films Octopussy and Goldeneye were filmed along the Nene Valley Railway it's the ideal location and Bond World would be a major tourist attraction. Especially when I get Christopher Walken from A View To A Kill to be a tour guide! He hasn't been in a film for ages so will be glad of the work. Once each tour finishes visitors will even get the chance to see him wrestle Grace Jones. Sadly there won't be time to see her take care of Roger Moore 'personally' in bed as she famously offered to do in the film but you've got to draw the line somewhere. I'll also hire the actor that played Jaws to be my bodyguard. At the end of Moonraker he turned into a goodie so the only time he'll use his metal teeth is when Darragh MacAnthony comes around for a beer and needs his bottle of Budweiser opening.

The Cresset Comedy Club has long been a highlight with shows selling out weeks in advance. This month it’s the turn of Lucy Porter, Paul F Taylor, Joseph Wilson and Nik Copping to start the season off in style. Tickets cost from £10 and doors open at 7pm. Box office: 01733 265705. September
VOODOO STANDS UP
So, basically that's my plan. Now I know some of you will be thinking – 'This is all well and good but this sounds like yet another of your amusingly thought up, but ultimately flawed ideas, designed to fill out your allotted space in ESP' and you know what, maybe it is, but like Martin Luther King and Martin Wolfie Adams I have a dream. King dreamed of a world where his children wouldn't be judged on the colour of their skin, but on the substance of their character. Wolfie dreamed of a world where he needed to throw double tops to become the oldest darts player to become World Champion. And you know what? They BOTH happened.
29
They dared to dream and now so am I. OK, so my dream is to become rich by selling the naming rights to a piece of land I don't technically own to Donald Trump. But as Trump himself once said – 'Think BIG or go home'. Well I've thought BIG and now I'm going home. Time to send a 'friend request' to Donald Trump on facebook.
Join the Fosters Comedy Award winner and star of loads of stuff on telly, Russell Kane, at the South Holland Centre in Spalding as he mercilessly explores the ridiculous state of masculinity in the modern world. The comedy nights return to Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge in Stamford this month with Steve Day of Radio 4, who is a deaf comedian fresh from his Edinburgh Fringe show Run Deaf Boy Run, with support from two other accomplished acts on the circuit, Tom Roche and Rhodri Rhys. I’LL HAVE A ‘P’ PLEASE, DOBB It’s always fascinated me how gorgeous ESP model Harriadne can look so fabulous in most settings but even I can’t believe how she manages to make posing in a men’s toilet look quite so glamorous. Dobbies Garden Centres has just opened its multi-million pound Garden World down at Serpentine Green and one of its star attractions (amongst the gifts, foodhall, toys, plants and, I’m reliably informed, heavenly cupcakes) is its flower-shaped urinals. I’m all for trying to ‘pretty up’ such an environment but for the life of me I can’t fathom why they didn’t shape them like the side of the pan and a bathroom mat – in my experience, that’s where most men seem to prefer to piddle, especially after a couple of beers!
DO YOU TAKE AMERICAN SEXPRESS? According to a new survey, a quarter of all fast food delivery men have been offered ‘alternative payment methods’ when they arrive at customers’ houses with their scoff. I want to know where these delivery men surveyed work because to be honest, looking at the bloke that normally delivers my pepperoni thin crust, frankly I’d rather give him the cash.

STOVIES – a traditional potato dish with added left-over lamb/beef, in days gone by it really was the old bits of meat that were unwanted. So this dish can be made much healthier by adding the leaner cuts of meat and adding lots more root veg to the pot. RASPBERRIES – the humble raspberry is the most popular fruit in Scotland and as such regarded as the fruit of Scotland (I remember many times berry picking with my big brother JD to earn some pennies). A powerful antioxidant due to its ellagic acid content, this tiny fruit also contains B vitamins, fibre, vitamin C, calcium and manganese (and more). HAGGIS – Not an everyday food and generally eaten at Burns Night suppers or other celebrations, this traditional dish is made from sheep heart, lung and liver with added lamb meat (or beef), mixed up with oatmeal, onions, herbs and spices minced up and stuffed into the lining of a sheep stomach (once boiled you cut the lining and scoop out the middle)! Nowadays there are healthier variations which are lower in fat or even a veggie option which is absolutely not a haggis at all! Normally served with mashed tatties (potatoes) and neeps (swede or turnips) I have to admit I loved this dish as a kid. Full of fibre and nutrients you might just want to try it for the experience!
Scotland
Scotland really can lead the way with some healthy and hearty foods. That just leaves me to say congratulations to mum and dad, you’ve done us all proud, and dad you are free to have a wee dram (or two)!
Going for an all-Scottish theme this month as it’s an official month to celebrate for us Devines as my mum and dad (John and Janet) reach their 50th wedding anniversary. Where does that time go? it only seems like yesterday I was living up in Dundee which was famous for the three Js – jute, journalism and jam! Scotland is unfortunately known for its poor diet choices which also link with a higher rate of heart disease. Some of the less than healthy foods include scotch pies, take away foods, battered white sausage, and more recently it’s become known as the home of the battered Mars bar! It might surprise you to know that bonnie Scotland can boast some extremely nutritious and healthy traditional foods such as -SCOTS OATS – yes the mighty porridge oats, full of soluble fibre, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, iron and B vitamins. Oats can help to lower cholesterol with their fibre and beta-glucan content.
Karen For more information on health and wellbeing go to my website www.karendevine.co.uk
SWAPS Try adding extra oats into your diet in place of the higher sugar and refined cereals.
SCOTCH BROTH – a hearty soup full of barley and other pulses, heaps of root veg (carrots, swede, turnip) some greens such as cabbage and leeks and traditionally the addition of lamb or mutton (could use beef). This dish delivers lots of fibre, B vitamins, potassium and much more. SCOTTISH SALMON – the Scots pride themselves on the fresh salmon from the River Tay which brings some wild salmon to our plates. Salmon is a rich source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids which are good for the brain, skin, joints and a healthy immune system. Known to help reduce inflammation, improve memory and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

LOCAL FOOD FOOD REVIEW
The Clock
25 Bridge Street, Peterborough. Tel: 01733 555413
Whether it’s a tasty breakfast, lunch or an evening meal a visit to The Clock seems to be the right time for whatever you fancy.
This new fully licensed café/restaurant has made the most of the al fresco opportunity during summer with its outside dining, even throwing open the windows so you can sit inside but still watch the world pass by. Now there are great plans ahead for lots of exciting special events including comedy and jazz evenings as the bistro side takes off.
“No wilted lettuce or soggy sarnies to be found here, but generous portions of fresh food” We dropped by to try out the lunch menu and certainly weren’t disappointed. No wilted lettuce or soggy sarnies to be found here, but generous portions of fresh food. The ranch burger (£6.95) is 6oz of tasty Aberdeen Angus with fresh rocket, red onion and sliced vine tomatoes and the grilled chicken burger (£6.95) was no ordinary burger in a bun but succulent strips of chicken breast served on a bed of wild rocket with sliced vine tomatoes and lemon mayonnaise in a floured bap. The Ceasar salad was a visual feast in itself, creatively presented with a fan of cos lettuce wrapped around a bowl full of grilled chicken breast, anchovy fillets, parmesan shavings with croutons and a Caesar dressing. Their chunky fries which accompany the food are just gorgeous and the chicken tasty and tender. We barely had room but just had to try the array of new delicious desserts – all in the name of research of course! The fresh fruit tart and banoffee pie were a treat while the chocolate mousse and mini trifles would do any patisserie proud, and at just £2.95 each they’re an affordable indulgence!
CARLUCCIO CREATES A DISH FOR THE BORO! With Italian food always hugely popular in Peterborough, it’s exciting to see that the special guest at this month’s Italian Festival on September 11 is none other than Antonio Carluccio! “I am very curious about the festival, very much looking forward to it – Peterborough is laudable for what it does,” Antonio told ESP. The much loved food writer, restaurateur and star of BBC 2’s Two Greedy Italians will be the star of the show and “will cook a little bit” as he puts it and exude his unstoppable enthusiasm for Italian food – “I have a passion for cooking – I am not a chef, I am a cook!”
about the dishes he’s prepared and then staff from city restaurant Riva will hand out some they’ve already prepared.
He’ll also be signing copies of his books in the visitors centre on the day.
So, when it comes to a favourite ingredient, we wonder what Antonio just can’t do without. “Wild mushrooms,” he reveals, “I had it yesterday – pasta with mushroom sauce.”
When he dines out which Italian restaurants would he frequent, other than a Carluccio’s of course? “I do go to some but only one or two otherwise it looks like I’m going around to see what they are cooking,” he jokes.
Photo: Tony Briggs
“I believe that Italian food is going to stay it’s not just a fashionable thing”
He has a motto –‘MOF MOF’ – minimum of fuss, maximum of flavour – which he promises to convey with some simple recipes including a very special one just for Peterborough which we will reveal on our website www.espmag.co.uk in the food section nearer the festival. He’s also created another dish for Peterborough’s twin city of Forli. He’ll speak at the festival
40
www.espmag.co.uk
With TV work, books and more in the pipeline it looks like Antonio has his plate full and as he puts it with a laugh – “I won’t remain without work for a long time! I believe that Italian food is going to stay it’s not just a fashionable thing.”
Peterborough has the fourth largest Italian community in England, so the big question is – will he be bringing a Carluccio’s restaurant to Peterborough to add to the city’s ever growing dining out scene? Well, he wouldn’t be drawn too much at this stage other than to say that the city is somewhere he would favour, but the decision is not in his hands. Fingers crossed though… Foodies can also enjoy an Italian market, mozzarella and pasta making, pizza spinning by Papa Luigi and lots more at the free Italian Festival between 12 noon and 5pm in Cathedral Square.

It’s a long lay off and I’m sure that fans of White Clouds And Gunfire will be eager to be at the Met Lounge on Friday September 2 for their long awaited return. Find further info on the band at www.myspace.com/whitecloudsandgunfire
Fenech Soler begin their full headline tour on September 20 with a home town gig at the Cresset. The four piece electropop/rock band all live around the Peterborough area and are Dan Soler, Andrew Lindsay and brothers Ross and Ben Duffy. They begin the tour after a summer of festivals which included Glastonbury, Blissfields, T in the Park and Ibiza Rocks. I caught up with lead singer Ben Duffy as the band prepared for their appearance at the recent V Festival on the Eminem and Rihanna side of the bill. Ben told me – “We’re all looking forward to the appearance at the Cresset as it brings us back to our home town. We have fond memories of gigs at the Met Lounge where we started really, and as we’ve been so busy on the road it’s been a year since playing in Peterborough. So it seemed appropriate to start the tour in the city at a big venue like the Cresset.” The tour, planned for earlier in the year, had to be delayed because Ben had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. “As soon as I knew,” Ben told me,“the band felt that we needed to be upfront with our fans immediately so they knew what was happening, and their support has been tremendous. The treatment is finished and it’s great to be back doing what we love. Ibiza Rocks was great because it is one of the world’s biggest dance music festivals which we fit into perfectly.” Their debut album proved very successful, and included three tracks also released as singles – Lies, Demons and Stop And Stare. So what plans for more recording material? Ben said – “The first album was recorded by us at our base in Kings Cliffe and then we got it released on an independent label. We’ve now signed a deal with Warner Brothers to release future stuff. So now we’re busy writing between tour dates and the recording will start early new year for a second album.” It’s a busy time for Fenech Soler and you can find out more on www.fenechsoler.co.uk. Some of the dates on the tour have sold out so to check availability for the Cresset on September 20 call the box office: 01733 265705.

The Met Lounge has proved to be a popular venue for upcoming Indie bands and it’s therefore no surprise that local alternative rockers White Clouds And Gunfire have chosen it for their comeback gig. With a new line-up – Evey Verdegaal, Rob Woods, Lewis Fountain and Jake Mathews – it’s their first appearance in two years.
many venues have enjoyed throughout the years from the Bacon Boys. Their first gig was at The Gladstone Arms in 1991 and since then they’ve played to audiences all around the area. They still have a busy schedule and in early September you can catch up with the band on the following dates: Can you believe it? Porky Pig is 20 years-old. Not the Looney Tunes character but Peterborough’s very own rockers, the band Porky Pig. Only one thing’s changed in that time. That’s the size of their repertoire. When they started in 1991, it was just four or five songs. That’s grown considerably and now a Porky Pig gig can feature Motorhead and Sex Pistols covers through to Killers and Kings Of Leon. Whatever the number there’s always the same vibrant driving rock that

If you’ve not sampled the Stamford Corn Exchange yet, I recommend you do. It’s a superb venue brought back to life and run by a team of dedicated volunteers. More importantly they’re bringing a wide variety of shows into Stamford. September 10 caught my eye just recently because Aladdinsane appear there on that date. This band is hailed as the ultimate Bowie tribute band and although based in Peterborough, have been touring extensively around the UK for most of the year. It’s nice therefore to see them performing all the Bowie classics in the splendour of the Corn Exchange. With a strong local following and an excellent show tickets are bound to sell fast. I’m used to reporting the arrival of a new band on the scene in the area, but here’s a change – I understand that lead singer Dave Palmer has left rock band Storm and is taking a bit of time out before embarking on new challenges. They’ve been working together for five years. I’m sure we’ll see Dave re-emerge somewhere in the not too distant future with that distinctive voice and we will await news about Storm.
out, a quirky female four piece who stunned the Stage 2 tent with their versatility and musicianship, often swapping around their instruments like kids sharing their toys.

All in all loads of good music and great people and I would suggest to the Peterborough crowd that have wandered away over the last few years to get their sulky bums back there because it is as good, if not better, than it ever has been.
Where did the summer go? Under a rain cloud some may say but to be fair we haven’t really suffered trench foot or hypothermia, it’s been mighty fine at the festivals and no real UDIs to speak of either (Unidentified Drinking Injuries).
None finer than the Cambridge Folk Festival this year which, once again, proved that it is the place to be at the end of July. It was great to see a few Peterborough faces there again this year, the Peterborough patio table may make a comeback after all. Good to see old Shush Pearce there with Shirley – not sure if the twinkle in their eyes was the sunshine or the music but they were certainly smiling, great to see. Club With No Name stalwart and music pioneer Chris Lovell frequented the beer tent a time or two with Jacqui and the now unbelievably grown up Evie and Josh his kids who used to be seven and are now huge! Most of the other Boro crew were working but it was good to meet up with them. Scott… that tail… that wig… the photo! Ha ha ha! See www.festivaltails.com if you want to be like Scott. The festival itself threw out some amazing performances – Peatbog Faeries being my favourite and my partner Tracy’s, but for different reasons I suspect. Mine being brilliant dance beats and rhythms topped off with haunting pipe playing and saw-cut fiddle playing. Tracy’s being the 20-year-old fiddle player who had his top off for most of the performance. Whichever way you looked at it they rocked the place. Kazltzenjammer also stood
One for the September crowd that we got to last year and we really enjoyed is Alchemy which is on September 16-18 near Conningsby, South Lincs. If you like your festivals old school, free of corporate nonsense and full of kind friendly people Alchemy may just finish your summer off in style. Headliners Zion Train are always worth seeing especially if you like your bass chest- crunchingly good. We saw them at Bearded Theory back in May and they put on a blistering set of dub which even had these old knees bending in a dancing kinda way. Also there is Banco de Gaia if that’s your bag, Here And Now and Back To The Planet who’ve been festival stalwarts since the early nineties and still make every public schoolboy Tory wince at the mention of their name. Sounds like a band made for today to me! Another treat and a local couple doing the circuit, Pennyless will be playing at the festival, probably stuff off their new album Turning Of Our Days which is a beautifully crafted piece of old English folk bordering on medieval minstrel beat. Another band worth catching are Skiprat – great name, great tunes, great guys. The setting for the festival is great too and the Alchemists really do build a little fantasy paradise for the weekend and the £60 ticket price is a steal for the fun and entertainment to be had. Visit www.alchemyfestival.co.uk for all the regulation stuff to get you there. That’s it this month, enjoy Alchemy it may be the last festival to get to this year…

VOODOO BACK IN BALANCE Balance return to the Voodoo Lounge in Stamford on Saturday September 24 after their huge event in July which rocked the place to 4am. Resident DJs Niki Bell and Justin Wilson have built the night over the last three years by pushing the music forward, with their electronic, house, deep tech mix, often adopting a policy of playing no music which is more than three months old. This has developed Balance into one of the freshest nights around and it has a following to match with people travelling to the event. This month sees Click Therapy’s Lee Guthrie guesting with another excellent evening in prospect. Doors 9.30pm to 2.30am. Only £3 all night. www.mamaliz.co.uk
