First up on Thursday September 12 is Searching for Sugar Man. Winner of best documentary at the Oscars in 2012, this film tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest '70’s rock icon who never was. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist. Next up on Thursday September 19 is The Eye of the Storm. It's the story of a rich, egocentric old matriarch, Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling) and her two children, Sir Basil (Geoffrey Rush), an actor living in London, and daughter Dorothy (Judy Davis), a divorced French princess living in Paris, who returns to inherit her wealth. A story of conflicting cultures and resentment towards an unloving mother. On Thursday September 26 one of the films of 2012 The Place Beyond the Pines hits the art cinema screen! Featuring an all star cast including Eva Mendes, Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, this film tells the story of a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective. A modern morality tale underpinned by outstanding central performances. Finally on Thursday October 3 Scott Graham's debut feature Shell comes to the John Clare. A hushed and haunting coming-of-age drama, played out in the remote Scottish highlands. Chloe Pirrie plays teenager 'Shell', who tends to her jittery, reclusive father and the various lonesome drifters who pull into their forecourt. Along the way, Graham paints a sharp portrait of cramped lives in wide-open spaces and sexual desires that threaten to lose their bearings. Alex Jones
SHOWS ARE BACK ON BROADWAY! In an open letter to theatregoers Bill Kenwright says – “This special Peterborough season, in association with Vivacity Peterborough, is made all the more special by the fact that the people of Peterborough have been deprived of productions at The Broadway for some considerable time now. I do hope you enjoy what’s on offer.” Marti Pellow as Che in Evita
It’s fantastic news to see the Broadway Theatre is back in business for a short season with names like Will Young and Marti Pellow heading for the city thanks to a top theatre company and Vivacity. Vivacity are working in association with Bill Kenwright Ltd, a company which has been producing top quality theatre around the world for the past 40 years. In a real coup for the city they’re staging a unique series of productions, starting next month, which is unlike any other season seen here or elsewhere. It’ll breathe life back into the venue which has suffered several set backs and has been closed for some time. Bill Kenwright Ltd is a well respected production company which Vivacity assure us we can rely on. A spokesman for Vivacity told ESP – “Vivacity Peterborough are delighted that Bill Kenwright, one of the top theatre producers in the country has chosen Peterborough as the city to host this spectacular season. As the primary arts delivery service in Peterborough, Vivacity are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Bill Kenwright and to bring some of the best-known and critically acclaimed West End productions to a venue here in our city.”
Tommy Steele in Scrooge
So what’s on the line-up? Well the curtain goes up on October 30 with Marti Pellow, (Wet,Wet,Wet) playing Che in Tim Rice and Blood Brothers Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita. Then it’s a fortnight of rock ‘n’ roll musicals in November with Dreamboats and Petticoats followed by its sister show Save The Last Dance For Me. Michael Morpurgo (War Horse) then brings us his enchanting piece of live theatre, The Butterfly Lion. That’s followed by pop star turned theatre star Will Young appearing in Cabaret from December 2, which recently enjoyed sell out success in the West End. Musical theatre and movie legend Tommy Steele is next up for a spectacular pre-Christmas treat in the hit musical Scrooge, which also features illusions by Harry Potter magician Paul Kieve. Over Christmas it’s the ever-popular Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and finally, the new year will kick off in style with Willy Russell’s multi-award winning Blood Brothers. So it looks like it’s time to get excited once again and prepare to sit back and enjoy some of the very best shows around. If this limited season goes well it could lead to a whole new future for The Broadway. We can’t wait! To book call 01733 822225 or visit www.kenwright.com

Peterborough Arts Festival
FINALE WEEKEND
After the success of the Peterborough Arts Festival Field Day last month which Simona our Face of ESP thoroughly explored, the festival is gearing up to stage its spectacular finale weekend starting on Friday September 6 and finishing Sunday September 8.
All of these performances are astounding but this year’s main event is a must see! Happening at 7.30pm on Saturday and beginning in Cathedral Square, legendary pyrotechnic and street arts show Generik Vapeur will be taking over Peterborough.

Sens Dessus Dessous is much more than a series of random circus acts. The young artists of Collectif Malunés seduce audiences with their crazy upside-down universe… they throw themselves in the air, smash down to the floor… they love the madness. This is one disordered circus! Appearing alongside them is probably the most dangerous show at this year’s festival – The Wheel of Death, Times Trilogy – a jaw dropping, daredevil show. Running inside the Wheel of Death, high above the ground, acrobats overcome danger and defy gravity in this spectacular show from Marseille’s world famous La Rotative. There are too many incredible acts to mention here performing throughout the weekend with a fusion of circus, street performance and… the doolally!
Turning the streets into a piece of theatre, this show is performed by twenty blue figures who emerge from the shadows before leading you on a breathtaking journey, fusing music, fire and spectacle as they search for a place to gather. The performance will start in Cathedral Square before moving along Bridge Street and down to the Embankment.
Renowned as one of the finest street arts organisations in Europe, Generik Vapeur are famed for turning any public place into their own creative space. All this plus much more will be happening over the weekend so don’t miss out! For more info on the acts above and a detailed list of who else is performing visit www.peterboroughfestival.co.uk. A taste of
a t i V e c L a D ol
Time to say ciao to the Italian Festival as it takes over Cathedral Square on Saturday September 21 and Sunday September 22. This is the weekend for all things Italian from cars and food to music. This year brings special guest Gennaro Contaldo, world renowned Italian chef, giving a cooking demonstration! Gennaro will be creating a special dish for Peterborough on the Sunday and then you can also meet the star of TV’s Two Greedy Italians face to face when he hosts a book signing in the city centre. Brand new to the festival this year is a fabulous 30-piece marching band from the Foggia region of Italy, which will be performing on both days and are ones not to miss. There’ll be classic vehicle displays, cars from Alfa Romeo and for two wheel fans the Peterborough Lambretta and Vespa Scooter Club will be joining in with the weekend too.
Gennaro Contaldo
The Festival’s organised by the City Council and the Italian Community Association. Annette Joyce, Head of Commercial Operations at Peterborough City Council, told ESP – “The Italian Festival has established itself as one of the city’s premier events and we are proud to continue to work in partnership to produce a fun-filled, culturally enriching weekend.
Of course Peterborough’s many Italian restaurants will be out in force to fix all the Italian food cravings we have and chefs from Foggia will be giving demonstrations. There’ll be wine tastings and a fabulous Italian market so you can take a taste of Italy home.
“The city has a large and active Italian community who work incredibly hard, pulling out all the stops for everyone to experience a spectacular event that showcases the best of Italian culture and traditions. The weekend attracts people of all backgrounds and there is always something to enjoy for everyone.”
For more info go to www.thefleet-ica.co.uk or www.peterborough.gov.uk
There’ll also be various musical performers and entertainment throughout the day to create the perfect atmosphere for this exciting, and delicious weekend. We can’t wait!

BEACH BUM OR BUNS?
pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk
A survey of 1,900 women by website Real Holiday Reports revealed 52% of them have a ‘genuine fear’ of their bums looking big in a bikini. I’m told most women worry what others think about their bums. The solution is to draw attention elsewhere – go topless.
Pep Cipriano
Gennaro’s buon appetito for Italian Festival What dish or type of food is your birthplace Minori famous for? “Due to its location on the coast fish is very popular and features heavily on menus of local restaurants. The famous Amalfi lemons are used in many dishes especially in desserts. Ndundari, a type of gnocchi made with ricotta and served with a simple tomato and basil sauce, has always been traditionally eaten on the feast day of the patron saint – as is the unusual dessert of aubergines with chocolate.”
It’s Italian Festival time in Cathedral Square (September 21 and 22) and Gennaro Contaldo follows in the footsteps of Gino D’Acampo and Antonio Carluccio before him as the festival’s special guest. The famous Italian chef and TV personality will be cooking for the masses and signing copies of his latest book. This will be the city’s fifth Italian Festival and I think they’ve saved the best guest until now. Gennaro’s passion for Italian food is infectious and I couldn’t wait to talk Italian food porn with one of the world’s best performers… I understand you’ll be cooking a dish for Peterborough – can you give us an idea of what to expect? “I’m going to keep it simple and very Italian – I hope I won’t disappoint!”
I loved the episode in Two Greedy Italians when you went back home – please tell me there’s going to be another series?! “This is the response we’re getting worldwide and I really hope so too – it's the BBC that needs to be persuaded!” What is it about Italian food that makes it so appealing?
“Food is respected and Italians generally live to eat – after all it’s something we all have to do to survive, so why not make it pleasurable? Italians talk about food a lot; about the ingredients, which shop or market stall is best, what they cooked last night or what they are going to eat. Even when Italians go on holiday or to a wedding, the first question asked is ‘Come simangiava?’ (What was the food like?) What dish do you recommend cooking to impress a woman? “If you cook with love, then you can't go wrong!” What did you cook last night? “I normally cook Sunday lunch and I made a slow-cooked ragu using the sauce to dress pasta for the first course, followed by the succulent tender meat for the main course.”
“It’s simple, good, made with fresh ingredients and easy to cook. Our food appeals to pretty much everyone and has certainly taken over the world. But Italy is not just pizza and pasta, there are so many wonderful regional dishes and pasta is not just spaghetti, there are more than 600 different shapes in Italy.” Describe the relationship we Italians have with food? “Food is part of our culture. It starts from when we’re very young and brought up with the notion that we must eat well and properly.
Imagine your last request was a meal – what would it be? “I’d start with an antipasto of delicious cured meats with my home-preserved vegetables followed by spaghetti with a fresh tomato sauce and as this would be my last meal, I would treat myself to a Fiorentina steak. For dessert a large slice of my wife's homemade apple cake and of course an espresso.” You’ll be signing copies of your latest book at the festival. Tell me about it and do you have plans to publish another book this year? “My latest book is Gennaro, Let's Cook Italian (Pavilion) which was published last summer. It’s inspired by my childhood with simple, easy recipes for all the family to enjoy. The photos were taken at home surrounded by my lovely children. I’ll be bringing out another book next summer on Italian slow-cooked dishes.”
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
ITALIAN
It’s Italian Festival time in Cathedral Square this month (September 21 and 22) and this means the perfect opportunity to highlight some Italian immigrant traits: Pino Silvestre, plastic wrapping still on sofas, allotments instead of gardens, olives in Flora margarine tubs, out of date tinned food in pantries, ruled by stomach not heads, debating masters, touch a plant in photos, shout (because of the distance) when on the phone to Italy and bottles of unopened liqueurs from the 1970s.
MYU IS THE NEWEST BAR IN TOWN The days of Bar Rock and Chicago Rock before it have been deposited into our memory banks (I could tell you some stories) to make way for the latest concept from The Luminar Group – MYU Bar. I popped into the New Road venue and can report it’s undergone a bit of a transformation into a high quality, stylish new bar that will give a much needed boost to the late night economy. MYU is
CIAOS OUT > 14
www.espmag.co.uk
kitted out with a modern interior and luxurious lounge area that’s perfect for chilling out and there’s still plenty of dance floor space to throw your moves on. Best of all there’s some serious cocktail action on offer and it would’ve been extremely rude of me not to have sampled one of their fabulous sharing cocktails (clearly I wasn’t interested in sharing this one).
Former Face of ESP Tori Bradshaw wasted no time getting down to the opening night with a bunch of equally excited friends. Tori was impressed with the variety of music, friendly staff and reasonably priced cocktails of which I’m sure she insisted on sampling for quality control. MYU is free to enter before 12am and there’s always a wide selection of 2-4-1 drinks to choose from. So what are you waiting for?!
>> Vic’s Gym fighters at this month’s show! >> Lettuce – you tried coconut oil yet? >> Chris B – thanks for shooting my best side >> Wayne – want me to wear a funky t? >> Tony – let’s enter the cannoli eating competition! >> Meggie – do you want basil on your Junior’s cheesecake?

IT’S A NUMBERS GAME AT BALDERSTON Let me throw some numbers at you... 2013: A year that superstitious folk dreaded because it has a 13 in it. At Man About Town sponsors Balderston, they’re making their own luck... 33 degrees: So far it’s been a great summer for motorcycling and the boys at Balderston couldn’t be happier. 65: The height in inches of salesman Dave.
TEAM MIKEY ARE ON STARTERS ORDERS
90: The number of years BMW Motorrad has been making bikes. 38: The size of TJ’s waist (this measurement is up for vigorous debate). 300: The cost in £’s of the lovely looking BMW Club leather jacket, which I NEED and that Michelle will hopefully ask me to wear for a day... 1,000: The amount in £’s of a deposit contribution customers can benefit from when buying a new GS or RT model. 750: The amount in £’s of a deposit contribution customers can benefit from when buying a new S 1000 RR.
Our Mikey is taking his entry into the Perkins Great Eastern Run very seriously indeed. The last time I saw him chomping on a Maccy D’s was at least two months ago and he’s since assembled a race day entourage to ensure he’s in the very best of hands.
CAUGHT IN THE ACT! The best caption to

63: The new registration from September 1. Perfect for those who can’t cope with the number 13. Check out the range of new bikes here www.balderston.net
Mikey’s been updating us with all the latest PGER developments (see page 38) each month and the big day is now just weeks away. There’s still time to enter the half marathon or fun run and free training sessions are on offer from 7pm at Peterborough Athletics Track on September 4, 18 and October 2. PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:
CHRIS PORSZ Photo: www.evanderholyfield.com
Naming Chris Porsz a hero might be a bit strong in some people’s eyes but there’s no doubt in my mind that our local street photographer deserves my accolade. And that’s because Chris is one of very few people whose work really captures my attention. Photography is an art form and Chris has demonstrated since the 1970s that capturing this form of expression by social observation stirs something in everyone. Nostalgia has a warming effect on us all and Chris is a master at freeze framing moments of days gone by with such ease and effectiveness. However, I’m sure to the untrained eye (that’s me) there’s more to Chris’ work than just clicking a button. A certain amount of creativity is required but only Chris knows how and when to apply it to achieve the desired effect. The ‘Peterborough in the 1980s’ section on www.chrisporsz.com is my favourite; probably because it’s how I remember the city I grew up in. I don’t think Chris’ technique can be emulated and I wouldn’t want to see it tried. It’s candid, natural and spontaneous. With images
spanning more than 40 years, one of Chris’s passions today is shooting reunions – especially recreating old group photos. It’s worth taking a look at Chris’s work – as you can in a special exhibition at Ferry Meadows this month (see page 42) – and I know he’d love to hear from you if you spot yourself or someone you know in any of his photos. Chris triggers off happy and innocent memories of how things used to be. He pulls at my nostalgia strings and that’s why he’s my hero.
BOXING CHAMP AT RADIUS NEXT MONTH Tickets to see former world heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield at a special boxing dinner are selling fast. The former undisputed world champion in cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions has been invited to town by promoter Kevin Sanders and he’ll be taking centre stage at Radius (above The Solstice) in Peterborough on October 1. Holyfield is arguably most famous for twice defeating Mike Tyson (once at the expense of a bitten off ear) and notching up wins against other big names including George Foreman, Larry Holmes and Riddick Bowe. For tickets, call Kevin on 01733 371912 or 07872 601467. www.espmag.co.uk

PETER ANDRE HEADS LINE UP @ THE ARENA A great weekend of concerts is coming to Peterborough Arena at the Showground this month with pop stars past and present taking to the stage… Aussie heartthrob and star of reality TV Peter Andre will no doubt be taking the city by storm on Saturday September 28 when he performs live for his legion of fans. Brought to us by local staging and events company Sound Stage One, this concert marks the first major music event with a star-name at the venue since its rebranding last March. Keith Dalton, Peterborough Arena managing director, told ESP – “We’ve been working hard behind the scenes for many months to bring someone of Peter’s star quality to the venue – to meet the demand from many people locally and across the region for big names in music to play in Peterborough. We’re very excited and look forward to a fantastic show.”
LIBERTY X Q&A
Peter will be ably supported by Liberty X and fantastic ABBA tribute band Sweden whose members have performed all over the world. Pop stars Liberty X reformed for ITV2’s The Big Reunion and can be seen on screen again in The Big Reunion: On Tour this month so it’s a great chance to see them in the city and relive those catchy tunes like Just A Little… but will the sexy outfits make a comeback too, you’ll have to grab a ticket to see! Then the entertainment continues the following evening when 80’s stars Billy Ocean and Alexander O’Neil perform live on Sunday September 29. Billy’s well known for several hits including When The Going Gets Tough, Caribbean Queen, Get Outta My Dreams and Red Light and Alexander O’Neil also produced some defining hits of the decade with songs like Criticize and Fake. If you’re an 80s fan, don’t miss the chance to see these two great stars right here in the city! Tickets for both these concerts are available on www.seetickets.com, from the Peterborough Visitor Information Centre on Bridge Street or on 0871 220 0260.
You’re supporting Peter Andre at the Peterborough Arena on Saturday September 28. Have you worked with him before? “We have – Peter is such a lovely guy. He’s exactly like he appears on TV he’s not putting anything on he’s just a genuinely nice guy.” Jessica, our cover star from September 2002
It must be great to know that you’ll be performing in front of 5,000 people very soon! The buzz from that must be addictive. “It really is. It’s the most satisfying thing about doing what we do.”
The Big Reunion: On Tour hits our screens this month with bands including Liberty X returning for a three part series on ITV2.
concert in Peterborough this month and ESP’s Alex Jones grabbed a word with singer Jessica…
Following the success of the original TV series and the sell out tour at the Hammersmith Apollo, the bands Five, Blue, B*Witched, Liberty X, 911, The Honeyz and Atomic Kitten prepare to get back on stage to perform in front of over 100,000 fans.
Were you surprised by the reaction to The Big Reunion?
Liberty X of course will also be appearing in
Jessica – “I think we all were really. Going into it we didn’t know if anyone would care! Yeah it ended up being huge, the series was a hit and the live show at the Hammersmith sold out in something like 2 minutes!”
However, I heard a rumour the band might be disbanding at the end of your December tour is that true? “We have no end deadline to be honest. We got together for The Big Reunion and since then we keep getting asked to perform elsewhere so we’re just rolling with the punches at the moment. We love performing but it is harder to get together now. We’re all married and have families so things are different to back when we were 18 year-olds.”
I don’t know if you remember this but you actually appeared as ESP’s cover star back when you first stormed the charts! “Really? Oh I’d love to see it!” We’ll hopefully get you a copy at the Peterborough Arena! Anything you want to say to the fans that you’ll be performing to in September? “Yeah thanks for supporting us after all these years and we’re looking forward to seeing you all soon!” Read our full interview on www.espmag.co.uk

KIND HEARTS, CORNETTOS & FIVE STAR STAND UP Eagled-eyed readers will have spotted that this month I’m holding an ice cream instead of a microphone. This is because for one month only as well as picking out some top comedians that are coming to 'da boro' I am also going to share with you the news that I’ve discovered the world's most disappointing ice cream range. It's called the 'Cornetto Enigma' and I was fooled into buying a box of four on a half price offer in a supermarket. Please don't make the same mistake in thinking that Cornetto have re-booted the classic Cornetto that everyone knows and loves because they haven't. The only 'enigma' about it is why Cornetto decided to make such a small ice cream and put it in such a big bloody box. One that's practically the size of a 10 pack of fish fingers. I have teaspoons in my kitchen drawer that are bigger than the actual 'Enigma' ice cream. The whole experience is as disappointing as the ending of the Pegg/Frost/Wright 'World's End' comedy film/cornetto trilogy. Anyway, onto happier news because this is the time of year when comedians emerge from the bubble of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and hit the UK circuit with their new hour long shows. Over the next 12 weeks there are some great comedians coming to Peterborough to perform at the Key and The Cresset. Whether you're a fan of wordplay, puns, one liners, political rants or anecdotes about badgers in top hats there's something to suit all comedic tastes. Here's my pick of some of the stand out acts you can see. For prices check the Key and Cresset websites for details.

Forza ITALIA! Being Italian I love it that Peterborough dedicates a weekend in the city to celebrate all that is Italian. I'm going to sound biased now but I certainly love the food, the vino, the cars and the fashions to name but a few! One other thing the Italians are renowned for is their leather and this autumn/winter, whether it’s genuine leather or leatherette, it's appearing everywhere as a whole or in details and trimmings. In my opinion Warehouse in Queensgate has a truly stunning collection this season and that's because of their cuts, prints and attention to detail. Their imitation leather pieces are fantastic quality and bang on trend. Big bold prints and monochrome are being carried through into the autumn/winter months so those summer staples you have won’t look out of place layered up this season. Italians love designer styles and Alexander McQueen is one talented guy who's created some iconic pieces and prints and he continues to do so. Maysons in the Westgate Arcade have a fantastic collection of his t-shirts, shirts and jumpers for men, so pairing up slim fitting jeans with a statement top is made easy. Ciao! Natasha

She’s always had the X Factor! Beautiful Nicole Scherzinger is taking her seat on the judging panel once again but this time she has Mrs Osbourne to contend with… Nicole Scherzinger’s rarely out of the press with her relationship with Louis Hamilton a regular talking point and her stint as a judge on ITV1’s The X Factor creating plenty of gossip too, but with the return of X Factor royalty Sharon Osbourne, our ESP cover girl might not take all the headlines!
Singer Nicole Scherzinger, Take That superstar Gary Barlow, Svengali manager Louis Walsh and the ever-popular Sharon Osbourne form this year’s panel in the search for the nation’s next big singing sensation and award-winning presenter Dermot O’Leary is back to front the show. And in the first of an exciting range of new changes for the 10th series, hopefuls will –

The nation’s most talked about entertainment show is back for a momentous 10th series, with a number of changes celebrating the best of The X Factor including brand new double
auditions and the welcome return of a familiar face.

for the first time ever – have to tackle two sets of auditions. To win over the nation, they first have to face the four feisty judges eyeball to eyeball in an intimate audition room.
The Xtra Factor is also back this year with more backstage banter, laughter and outrageous antics than ever as Caroline Flack is joined by brand new co-host, comedian Matt Richardson.
If they succeed in impressing one-on-one they then secure a spot on stage at the second audition where they’ll confront an audience of 4,000 at Wembley Arena. Here they’ll have to perform once more to prove they can also impress an audience before securing a coveted place at Boot Camp.
So here we go again guys… will we see a new JLS emerge or a solo talent from Peterborough? We’ll have to wait and see but whatever happens thousands of viewers will no doubt be joining the hopefuls on their ‘journey’!

PAIN & GAIN (15)
##
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Anthony Mackie Director: Michael Bay
Transformers director Michael Bay tries to show he can do more reasonably budgeted films as well as blockbusters – but sadly fails. Even with the solid acting duo of Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson on board, Bay’s long-term, based-on-a-true story ‘pet project’ about a botched kidnapping by a trio of gym junkies turns into a bit of a mess.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
The premise is pretty decent as Wahlberg stars as pumped-up instructor Danny Lugo
in early nineties Miami, who – in pursuit of the ‘American dream’ – enlists the help of gym buddies Paul Doyle (Johnson) and Adrian Doorbal (The Hurt Locker’s Anthony Mackie) to kidnap one of his millionaire clients, Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub). But with private investigator Ed Dubois (Ed Harris) on their tails, things don’t quite go to plan and several innocent people get caught in the crossfire as the story unfolds – forsaking potential satire for overstylised violence.
It’s not completely without merit, with a few decent set-pieces and one great comedy scene with ‘get rich quick’ guru Jonny Wu (The Hangover’s Ken Jeong) – but sadly the talents of Wahlberg and Johnson are hampered by a disjointed script. He’s done some good stuff – Bad Boys, The Rock and Armageddon – and some pretty awful stuff – Transformers 2 & 3 and The Island – but sadly this docks at the latter end of Bay’s CV with plenty of pain, and not much gain.

In an action-packed August this missed the cut in last month’s issue, but after becoming a surprising comedy hit Stateside deserves a mention. Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses) stars as a veteran drug dealer who creates a fake family – including stripper Jennifer Aniston and runaway Emma Roberts – to move a huge shipment of drugs across the border from Mexico to America.
Rachel McAdams continues her affinity to love and time travel (after starring in The Time Traveller’s Wife) in the latest comedy-romance from Love Actually helmer Richard Curtis. Brit star Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter) gets his first lead role – travelling back in time to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend via his newly discovered abilities.
After a nine-year hiatus, Vin Diesel takes the third instalment to its critically-acclaimed lowerbudgeted roots, forgoing the big budget that hampered the sequel. He again stars as the deadly ‘night-visioned’ antihero title character, who’s been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, up against an alien race of predators – and ex-WWE champ Dave ‘The Animal’ Bautista.
Apparently Channing Tatum isn’t quite the license-to-print-money execs first thought, after they stupidly released this just months after similarly White Housethemed action fare Olympus Has Fallen – leading to it underachieving in the States. Tatum stars as a cop who (surprise, surprise) has to protect the President from mercenaries – with Jamie Foxx in support.
Oscar-winning, A Beautiful Mind director Ron Howard helms this high-octane Formula One story about the rivalry between Austrian champ Niki Lauda and rising British star James Hunt. Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth takes on the mantle of the ‘playboy’ driver, who had infamous battles with Lauda – who was recovering from a 1976 crash that almost claimed his life.

SAINT’S ROW IV (360/PS3/PC) Out now The ‘Saints’ go to infinity and beyond in their most chaotically funny adventure yet. As your Saint character gets elevated to Presidency, your haven is disrupted by an alien invasion which leaves you trapped in the massive Matrixinspired open-world of Steelport – with arguably the most impressive armory of weapons and super-powers ever seen in a video game.
#####
But while these abilities make the game far easier and more repetitive than it really should, the pure enjoyment and hilarity levels are so ramped to the max it’s almost impossible to put your controller down with so much to do and erm, kill. Go intergalactic for the best version of Saint’s Row yet.
SPLINTER CELL: BLACKLIST (PS3/360/WIIU/PC) Out now
You’ve just read about the best Saint’s Row title – well this is the also the best Splinter Cell game ever-released. Never has stealth been so beautifully honed than Sam Fisher’s technology-rich world, which makes silent kills an absolute dream – as he aims to stop a series of escalating terrorist attacks known as the Blacklist. With a mass of solo, co-op and online modes, this is even better than the advancements that Hitman made last year with Absolution.
#####
Undoubtedly the best stealth gaming experience ever – and clearly shows how far current-gen consoles have come.
THE BUREAU: XCOM DECLASSIFIED (360/PS3/PC) Out now If you’re a fan of the extremely impressive strategic game XCOM – then you’ll find enjoyment in this flawed prequel. This tactical shooter – set in the pre-Kennedy assassination times of 1962 – deserves credit for trying something different as your Special Agent Carter devises scenarios for your squad to take on Mankind’s first alien invasion. But sadly it doesn’t quite tie into the XCOM world as expected – despite offering a meaty campaign – but is still an above average shooter that is well worth a look.
The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience
THE SMURFS 2
(PS3/360/WIIU/DS/PC) Out now Usually kids movie tie-ins are extremely poor – but this has pretty decent production values to make this a worthy purchase.

Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.
Decent graphics, cut-scenes and well-constructed worlds mask what is an extremely generic Mario-esque platformer at heart – as Papa Smurf and co. master their abilities to rescue Smurfette (surprise, surprise) from the evil Gargamel. Charmingly generic stuff.
DIANA
Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts (The Impossible, 21 Grams) takes on the first major big-screen portrayal of ‘The People’s Princess’. This biographical story – much like with Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln – centres on the last two years before her death, instead of the majority of her life as the Princess of Wales. More specifically it’s based on her alleged secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan – played by Lost’s Naveen Andrews – from Kate Snell’s best-selling book Diana: Her Last Love, as well as touching on her divorce from Prince Charles and relationship with Dodi Fayed. The recently documented fresh new conspiracy theories surrounding Diana’s infamous death in that Paris tunnel probably won’t do it any harm either . . .

TOP DOWN MOTORING WHERE THE CUSTOMER IS KING And if it’s a real head turner you’re after then you won’t go too far wrong with this Audi A5 cabriolet from Motorpoint in Fengate for just £19,999. I say ‘just’ because this beauty retails at more than £36k brand new – and that makes this two-year-old a bargain. Annual road tax is great value for money too at £140. Best of all it’s red. If you’re going to go for a topless model then you might as well do it in style and pick the one colour that’s guaranteed to turn heads. I could’ve been driving around in any other colour convertible with a half naked Page 3 girl in the passenger seat and still this red baby would get me more attention. Photos: Chris Brudenell
Topless cars cover a lot of unnecessary miles because you don’t need an excuse to cruise for a bit of posing. This 2.0 TDI Sportline model will get you around 50 miles to the gallon, which means you can catch your reflection in every shop window in Peterborough before the needle even thinks about moving towards red. We’ve probably got a good month’s worth of summer left and this is what you’ve got to show for it so far: • 450 insect bites • Burnt scalp / bingo wings / builder’s bum • Standby toilet roll in the fridge in case of another food poisoning BBQ But wouldn’t it be nice to go into the autumn and winter with something tangible to remember the sun with? There’s still time to cancel that winter holiday and do what most of us have always wanted to do but haven’t had the nerve – buy a convertible. Life’s too short not to. Get one now and you’ll be cruising with the roof down for a few more weeks, plus you’ll be ready to whip your top off again come springtime when everyone else is wishing or searching for a convertible.

There are dozens of open top cars on the market but what you get with Audi is style, good build quality and technology. I say technology because I had to ask a salesman where the ignition was and call him back again when I couldn’t find the handbrake. I’m obviously stuck in the 20th century but those of you up to speed with Audi trick bits and modern motoring will know the key slots into a hole on the dash – and the handbrake is a button. This model is equipped with stop-start technology, which means the car won’t kill any trees or blow another hole in the ozone layer because it’ll turn itself off each time you come to a halt. As much as saving the planet is important, Audi have also considered the feelings of purist drivers and provided a switch to disable the engine stop. Environmentalists reading this will be appalled to learn that I happily disabled it. Performance-wise this particular A5 model won’t be setting your pants or g-string on fire. Acceleration is swift (0-62 is a
smidgen over 9 seconds) but nothing to write home about and that’s because it’s built for looking good and soaking up admirers rather than sending you into a cardiac arrest around the Nurburgring. Inside you get to play with a whole host of buttons that’ll do one thing and another and they’re all wrapped around in a black finish with leather seats to match. But she’s at her best with her top off. This girl’s so keen to go topless that it only takes a flick of a switch and a matter of seconds to get a proper eye full of her open top curves. It goes without saying the A5 cabriolet is a lovely bit of stuff but what makes her all the more appealing is buying from Motorpoint. I was impressed with their customer service and thankfully Channel 4’s recent series ‘The Dealership’ hadn’t rubbed off on the staff who were welcoming, professional and most of all non-pressuring. Manager Lee Arnold has his eye very much on the ball when it comes to ensuring the customer is king and this focus has definitely helped Motorpoint sell on average more than 420 cars a month. They’re very much of the mindset that the purchase of a car is only the start of a relationship with the customer. You receive an email after you’ve bought a vehicle asking how likely you are to recommend Motorpoint to a friend or family. This feedback is measured on a scale of 0 to 10 and the scores are displayed on site for staff and customers to see just how well they’re delivering satisfaction. Staff also adhere to eight Motorpoint core values that talk about happiness, embracing change, responsibility, creativity, communication, positivity, passion and determination. These kind of values are normally associated with the corporate world and it’s refreshing to see a national car dealership embrace this level of professionalism. In addition, customers can be reassured every car (new and low mileage nearly new) comes with manufacturer’s warranty

PERSONALITY OVER LOOKS The Top Gear team followed by stand-up comic Michael McIntyre have been named as UK motorists’ ultimate driving companions according to a survey by the MoneySuperMarket. Assuming these choices were made based on being entertained, why then was Cheryl Cole named third in the poll?
TAKE A BREAK ON LONG JOURNEYS The SaferPeterborough Partnership is warning motorists of the danger of falling asleep at the wheel and urging you to take regular breaks on long journeys.
“All in all my Motorpoint experience exceeded expectations and just for customer service alone I cannot recommend them enough.” and buying power that enables Motorpoint to bulk purchase from suppliers, making savings that are passed directly to the customer. In some cases, this can be as much as 50 per cent. Almost all their stock is less than two years old and less than 20,000 miles and every car is pre-delivery inspected and history checked. You’ll also get two keys, handbook, a full valet and seven days free insurance. There’s even a bunch of optional extras including GAP insurance, parking sensors and phone kits to ponder over.
All in all my Motorpoint experience exceeded expectations and just for customer service alone I cannot recommend them enough. I’ve bought vehicles before based predominately on service experience and these guys – along with their decent onsite cafe (baguette of the day is yum) – make the emotional journey of buying a car more of a walk in the park instead of a rollercoaster ride. Special thanks to Spriggs Reclaim Centre in Oxney Road for letting us use their yard to photograph the A5 and happy birthday from all at ESP to owner Denis! Pep Cipriano
Almost 20 per cent of accidents on major roads are sleep-related. Opening the window or blasting out your favourite tunes on the radio will do little to prevent you falling asleep at the wheel. A caffeine drink and a 20-minute nap is a short-term solution that will buy you a little time to continue driving briefly. The only real cure for sleepiness though, is a proper kip! BLUE SKY THINKING BEHIND THE WHEEL Dream-car competitions company Best of the Best has revealed the most sought-after extra on a car is a panoramic roof. HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine
karen.devine@espmag.co.uk
Life is sweet… when you ditch the sugar. ESP’s Karen Devine looks at how the sugar boost drains your energy. F or most people needing a quick energy fix they invariably turn to sugar which as we all know when we’re flat out exhausted and need to keep going sugar hits the spot!
The focus for my column this month is pure white refined sugar that’s added to tea/coffee, fizzy drinks, sauces, cakes, biscuits, many manufactured products, bread and more. Refined sugar is a nasty substance as it causes those extreme energy fluctuations, along with anxiety, cravings for more of it, low mood and feelings of negativity. Then there are the connections to diabetes, cardiovascular issues, feeding bacteria/yeasts in the gut, weakening our immunity and of course weight gain! It affects our hormones, overtaxes the adrenal glands and the pancreas – hardly much pay off for a quick fix if you ask me! Nothing robs your energy and vitality quicker than eating refined white sugar, you can also add in other refined carbohydrates that turn rapidly to sugar which include white bread, crumpets, white bagels, white flour products and the like (oh and not forgetting alcohol!) When you’re trying to connect with your true energy, yes, it is hidden in you somewhere, you have to remove those obstacles that stand between you and it! Most of the food you really have difficulty giving up is the food you’re addicted to and you’re satisfying the cravings rather than the healthy ‘energy’ body which is crying out for nutrients.
As if these links were not enough, refined sugar can speed up the ageing process and make you look far older that your years. This type of sugar includes not only white sugar but brown, maltose, dextrose, corn syrup, fructose (not to be confused with eating a piece of whole fruit) malt syrup, sucrose, evaporated cane juice, high fructose corn syrup – yes you’ve guessed it, the list is endless and many of these are hidden sugars that affect the body in the same way.
Refined sugars attach to protein molecules in the body and create harmful molecules called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGES), this may then damage collagen causing skin to lose its elasticity leading to WRINKLES, so not only are you tired and low in energy you look 10 years older... not much of a reason to allow these types of sugars to keep a hold on you is it! So it comes back to nature and what she really did intend for us, if you need a little sugar then obviously fresh fruits with skin, some dried such as figs, dates that can be blended with some recipes, raw coconut nectar, a little drizzle of honey or maple syrup (notice a drizzle and not spoonfuls).
There are newer sugar substitutes that are far better than some of the more questionable sweeteners on the market that you could try such as stevia or a little xylitol. These are far sweeter than regular white refined sugar so only a little should be used. However, getting a sweet tooth in check is crucial to be able to wean you away or at least make the transition from high sugar diets. It may take a few weeks with a conscious effort to retrain your taste buds but when you do, you will feel the affects of pure white sugar almost immediately and wonder how you managed to eat this stuff day in day out. So if you want youthful skin and to hold back the tide of ageing, plus vitality to match, ditch the sugar or at least start to reduce it and make the transition to a more natural diet. You will be glad you did. In health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk
Refined energy in = BFE (brief false energy), that leads you to go back for the fix over and over again with the detrimental affect on your real energy and of course your health.

NOT A LOAd Of BULL Men’s natural skincare brand, Bulldog, has just launched in Morrisons so I decided to test it out on the other half to see what he thought of this great sounding product. Founded in 2007 in the UK, Bulldog has been developing natural skincare products that don’t contain controversial ingredients such as parabens, sodium laureth sulphate and artificial colours and have become the first and only skincare company to be recognised and approved as ‘cruelty free’. There will be four products available to purchase from the superstore so we decided to try them all (why not eh?). Tester’s verdict: “It’s free from lots of the nasty chemicals you often find in other moisturisers and smells pretty good too. It’s not too greasy and is better than other more expensive moisturisers I’ve tried before.” This really is man’s best friend!
Tester’s verdict: “It absorbs quickly with little greasiness and leaves my skin feeling really soft. Not sure about the anti-ageing effects yet as it’s early days but would definitely recommend it.”
Original facewash, £5.19 – With more green tea and eight essential oils this leaves your face feeling fresher than fresh and free of dirt and debris. Tester’s verdict: “I used this every morning in the shower and unlike many male face washes it didn’t leave my face dry or in need of instant moisturising. EvERYONE DESERvES AN MBE It’s summer 2013; times and beauty trends are changing and even non-surgical treatments have had something of a facelift. So when Martin and Mary kindly invited me to visit MBE (My Body Essentials) on Shrewsbury Avenue in Peterborough I thought it was a great opportunity to try their newest treatment and see how far back I could turn the clock... I was treated to their brand new Image Skin Care Oxygen Lift facial by Martin. He began by gently cleansing my face before applying a papaya and pineapple facial peel to my skin. This acts as an exfoliator and at first feels quite thick but after just a few minutes of massaging, as if by magic it turns into a liquid, removing unwanted dead skin cells and it’s absolutely amazing! However, it’s after the exfoliation stage that the real magic happens when the cutting edge effervescent oxygenating masque is applied. The masque goes onto your skin white and you can actually feel it bubbling away (it feels similar to when a skip fizzes away on your tongue) meaning that it’s being oxygenated. It really is a relaxing, therapeutic sensation and takes around 15 minutes for the masque to be absorbed into the refreshed layers of your skin. Once it’s all disappeared a stem cell enhancer serum is massaged in to help encourage rejuvenation and prevent any signs of ageing (not that I have any of course!).
• Full uniform and equipment provided on completion of training
No experience required as full training is provided but a caring, professional attitude is a must. If you have the qualities to make an excellent care assistant looking after people in their own homes we would like to hear from you. To request a job description and application form call
01733 223426 or email denise@cambridgeshirehomecare.co.uk
Last but not least, a tinted moisturiser with SPF30 is applied to protect your newly glowing skin from the environment. When Martin handed me the mirror I was truly surprised and impressed by the results; I had no make up on (except the tinted moisturiser) and yet my skin was radiant and illuminated. I couldn’t stop looking at my skin when I got home and the results lasted for a good week afterwards. Unfortunately I was only going to work the next day but this really is the perfect pamper treatment if you’ve got a special occasion such as a wedding or a big night out. This treatment would usually cost £60 but is available for a fabulous £40 throughout September. So pick up the phone now and get yours booked in or better still book in with a friend and make a night of it. This is by far THE best facial I’ve ever had; like a breath of fresh air (literally). This is just one of the many amazing treatments that MBE can offer you so give Martin and Mary a call today on 01733 350102. IT’S GOING TO BE A ‘GREAT’ EASTERN RUN! Not long to go now! ESP’s Mikey Clarke grabs a word with Annette Joyce – Race Director for the Perkins Great Eastern Run... During the last few editions of ESP Magazine, I’ve been reporting on the Perkins Great Eastern Run. I’ve offered training tips and shared my Annette Joyce, Race Director experiences of running it a few times myself. It’s now reached a point where I’ve run out of things to say (excuse the pun) on the topic – good news for you readers. I thought it best to get another opinion on the popular event, so grabbed a few words with Annette Joyce, the Head of Commercial Operations at Peterborough City Council. Annette seemed like the perfect person to discuss the half marathon with. She’s run it a couple of times, been involved with the organising in one way or another for the last five years – with the title of Race Director for the last two years. Asking what changes she’s made during that time, Annette explained – “The route now goes right through the city centre, which is great for the runners. From experience I know there’s nothing worse than running through long, dull roads. Going through our historic city filled with live entertainment is a real treat.”
38
www.espmag.co.uk
Many runners I’ve spoken to have described the Perkins Great Eastern Run as one of the best half marathons in the country. Annette agreed – “It’s the people of Peterborough that make it so unique for the runners. All the streets come out cheering, playing music, and give a real carnival like atmosphere. The first time I did the run, I was right at the back, and yet people were still out showing their support.” Annette continued – “With this particular run, it doesn’t matter if you’re right at the back. So many people fear finishing last, and wonder if they’ll get told off. Some races are almost packing up by the time you finish, but not in Peterborough. We’ll be cheering the last runner back just as much as the first.” This year, the PGER will start and finish on the embankment. Annette said – “The embankment will be filled with live entertainment, a French Market and loads of stalls. We’ve really gone all out to make this year’s run enjoyable for the runners and spectators too. After all, it can be boring waiting for someone to finish 13.1 miles, especially for people waiting for a runner like me!” With around 4,000 runners already signed up (25% up from last year) this year is
Do it for charity... already the best yet. “The success is down to the team that put this together,” she said. “The Perkins Great Eastern Run couldn’t happen without the volunteers, our commentator Dick Hughes, Sam Hale on sponsorship, Tim Cook who provides the free training nights (visit www.espmag.co.uk for more details) and everyone else involved. The list is long.” Asking to conclude why runners should enter, I was told – “We have parents doing the fun run with their babies in a pram. We have people in their eighties doing the half marathon. This is really a day for all ages and all abilities.” To enter the Perkins Great Eastern Run, visit www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk
As well as reporting for ESP Magazine, I am the Regional Fundraising Manager for Arthritis Research UK. It would be foolish of me not to take this opportunity to ask you to consider running for my charity! Arthritis Research UK is working to take the pain away from people living with all forms of Arthritis and helping them to remain active. We do this by funding high class research, educating healthcare professionals and providing information to people with Arthritis and their carers. FIFTY DAYS OF GREY @ THE STAMFORD CORN EXCHANGE
CALLING
Alex Jones brings you the latest events and news from Stamford
THREE DAY ANTIQUES FAIR Think you've got what it takes to uncover a great bargain? Or are you an avid collector of all things antique? If so get down to Stamford's three day antique fair from Friday September 13 to Sunday September 15. As seen on TV this fantastic fair will put on show a wide range of antiques, collectables, furniture, vintage, militaria, maps, shabby chic and much more. There’ll be a huge range of marquee stalls and an outside brocante fair. The fair will be held on the meadows, there’ll be refreshments and free parking (weather permitting)! Entry’s £4 for adults (£3 concessions) and an accompanying child can enter for free! For more info call 07772 349431.
There's something about the colour Grey. Not only does the word feature in the most popular 'adult' book series of all time it now has itself linked to the particularly naughty Fifty Days of Grey which is showing at the Stamford Corn Exchange on Wednesday September 18 and Thursday September 19. This brand new show follows the story of two middle aged women (Fran & San) being re-introduced to the world of adult entertainment after realising there’s a whole world of naughtiness out there that neither of them have ever tried exploring! The show is not vulgar, although it does, of course have sexual references in it, but minimal use of strong language. A heart-warming and sometimes outrageous comedy, ideally suited to hen-parties and ‘girls nights out'. Tickets are £13 (£11 concessions) and are available from the theatre box office on 01780 766455 or by visiting www.stamford-corn-exchange.com.
TIME TO CELEBRATE THE STAMFORD ARTISANS GUILD AUTUMN FAIR ‘GORGEOUS’ GEORGIANS It’s here! This month signals the start of the first ever Stamford Georgian Festival and here at ESP HQ we can't wait to check it out!
The Stamford Artisans Guild will be showcasing a range of crafts and creations from some of the best local designers and artists at the Stamford Arts Centre on Saturday September 21.
This is an ideal opportunity to buy some unique gifts for birthdays, anniversaries or a chance to cross a few things off the
Christmas to do list! There will be a wide variety of work on show from glassware and pottery to clothing and jewellery.
There’ll also be a charity exhibition with the theme 'Memories' which will be in support of the charity Dementia Support South Lincs, a local charity that supports carers and people with Alzheimers and
Running from Friday September 27 to Sunday September 29 the festival will transport the best place to live in Britain (thought I'd sneak that in there) back to the Georgian era complete with horse drawn carriages, period costume cricket and erm... bull runs.
International carnival specialists 'Shademakers' will be working in conjunction with New College Stamford to recreate one of the town’s goriest traditions which was (rightfully) abandoned in 1839 thanks to a campaign by the RSPCA. David Nalson, the Chairman of South Kesteven District Council (the festival organisers) told ESP why you should be excited about the prospect of the festival. “Stamford has the perfect backdrop for a festival such as this one. The town’s Georgian heritage and architecture contributed greatly to it being crowned the best town in the UK and this festival will surely provide further evidence for that case.” Tickets for special events happening throughout the Festival are available to book now from the Stamford Arts Centre. To book call 01780 763203 or visit www.stamfordartscentre.com or find out more on www.stamfordgeorgianfestival.co.uk

Horrible Histories will be performing a specially written 'Gorgeous Georgians' stage show at the Stamford Corn Exchange, street entertainers including stilt walkers, jugglers and Morris dancers will be wowing the crowds there’ll be music, markets, a flea circus and food demonstrations and, as mentioned earlier, there’ll be a recreation of the Bull Run at the Stamford Arts Centre!

BURGHLEY NEEDS YOU! ATTENTION. SQUAD, STAND AT… EASE! You get the idea with that. Onto the matter at hand! Burghley House is appealing for help from local people in compiling its 2014 exhibition,The House at War. Next August it’s the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War and Burghley will be remembering this historic milestone by staging its own commemoration of life during the Great War. As well as including some of the House’s own wartime collections, Burghley is keen to feature memories of local people too. Rachel Starmer, education assistant at Burghley told ESP – “We’d like to feature the story of the House and estate during the War; its role as a convalescent hospital for injured soldiers and a home for Belgian refugees. If you have family links or any wartime memorabilia connected to Burghley during this period we’d really like to hear about them.” The centenary programme will contain a string of events to mark key moments of the 1914-18 conflict and Burghley aims to offer its own contribution to this! Anyone who may be able to help should contact Rachel at rachel.starmer@burghley.co.uk or call 01780 761996.
It was another fine turnout for the Big Fairy Picnic in the Park at Burghley recently and ESP’s Pep ‘Tinkerbell’ Cipriano popped down, not wearing his wings and tutu but brandishing his camera! The day was all in aid of local charity Anna’s Hope for children and young people with brain tumors and once again everyone had a magical time. www.annashope.co.uk

25Anniversary Nene Park Celebrates
Playtrail photos: Red Wellies Photography
th
t’s the place we walk the dog, cycle, enjoy watersports, maybe a barbecue, give the kids the chance to run around, go fishing or take a boat trip. Nene Park is many things to many people here in the city but sometimes it’s also forgotten as we all make the mistake of not making the most of what’s on our doorstep!
I
What do you think it brings to the city and what part does it play for the community?
As Nene Park celebrates 25 years (yes really!) the team have come up with a unique way of showcasing all this fabulous country park has to offer with an exhibition by a local guy we’ve followed here at ESP for some time.
Why have you chosen this type of exhibition to celebrate 25 years?
Street photographer Chris Porsz has become well known for his candid shots of people and places in the city over the last 30 years and his work’s become a piece of social history. Chris has been out and about in the Park with his camera during the last four seasons, snapping away at the many visitors, young and old, enjoying walking, jogging, cycling, boating, watching wildlife and much more. In total 128 photographs will be displayed on outdoor weatherproof boards from Monday September 16 in an area of Ferry Meadows Country Park known as ‘Roman Point’. Nene Park Trust, which is a registered charity, was established in 1988 to ensure that Nene Park would be managed and protected forever. Along with a 999 year lease on the Park, the Trust was endowed with commercial properties and other assets which now generate income to maintain the Park. Over £1.7m a year is currently spent on managing and maintaining Nene Park. This is all self-funded through rental income from commercial and Park properties, concessions and investments, and so this fantastic asset doesn’t cost us a penny as taxpayers. ESP chatted to Teresa Wood, Nene Park’s Visitor Services Manager to find out more… How has the park changed in 25 years? “The Park’s clearly developed and matured over the last 25 years but hasn’t deviated from its core aim of providing a recreational space and a gateway to open spaces and countryside. The opportunities for relaxation and recreation in a wide variety of landscapes and wildlife habitats at sites such as Ferry Meadows, Thorpe Meadows and Orton Mere remain as important today as they were 25 years ago.”
42
www.espmag.co.uk
“The founding objective of the Trust (and therefore Nene Park) was: ‘To provide for the recreation of the public by the provision of a park for the benefit of the inhabitants of Peterborough and visitors with the object of improving the conditions of life for such persons’. This remains true today and the Trust’s work continues to be based on its original aim. Nene Park is both beautiful and accessible as well as being an enjoyable place that provides many things for the local community – healthy relaxation, a place to jog, walk or cycle, somewhere to watch and enjoy wildlife and nature, and a venue for a wide range of events, activities and learning.”
“Chris is an acclaimed photographer and he is from Peterborough. He has a passion for the Park and for people and this combination has made an excellent topic to celebrate the wide and varied park visitors. The exhibition will show visitors of all ages and backgrounds enjoying the park – creating memories that will be recalled and retold in a further 25 years!” What does the future hold for the Park? “Over the coming years the Park will benefit from approximately £5m investment programme including the £2.5m watersports and outdoor activity centre opening in spring 2014, a three year play trail project, improvement to paths, signs and park furniture. With growing visitor numbers and the increase in population in Peterborough it’s important that this investment continues to ensure the Park meets the expectations of the local community and our many visitors.” Are there any aspects of the Park you feel people don't make the most of or you wish they would use more? “The outlying areas such as Thorpe Meadows, Orton Mere, Woodston Reach and the walks out to the more rural areas along the Nene Way are all attractive parts of the Park that are not so well used by our visitors. Over the coming years we aim to promote these in different ways as attractive days out.” What makes the Park special to you? “The peace and tranquillity of the Park is quite special given that the Park is on the edge of the city. Also the diversity that can be found here, from a busy central hub around the Visitor Centre through to some secluded areas in the more rural parts of the Park.” See more of Chris’s pictures on www.espmag.co.uk.

THE SOUND & VISION OF BOWIE!
It’s 10 years this year since Aladdinsane were formed and that period has seen the Peterborough based Bowie tribute band, acclaimed by many people who’ve seen the show, including friends and former associates of David Bowie himself, as the best you will see or hear. This has seen them progress from the pub circuit and reach a level allowing them to play theatres and top music venues across the country with great success. On Friday September 13 you get a chance to see the band perform their well honed show at the Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre.
The shows cover all the great times of Bowie’s career starting with the legendary Ziggy Stardust period which catapulted him to fame in 1972.
It then progresses through David's later 70's period of the Thin White Duke, through to the commercial hits of the 80's and further on. Many big hits are performed like Life On Mars, Heroes, Drive In Saturday, Ashes To Ashes, Starman, Fashion, Diamond Dogs, Jean Genie and many more. I can personally vouch for the fact that Paul Henderson and his band as
Aladdinsane present a very professional and powerful performance having seen them several times myself, and they’re well worth seeing at one of the area’s top venues. Tickets for the September 13 show are £15 and are available from the Stamford Corn Exchange box office on 01780 766455. After the recent interest in the hugely successful ‘David Bowie Is…’ exhibition at the V&A in London I’m sure the heightened interest in all things Bowie will see tickets for this concert fly out the door! www.aladdinsane.co.uk
THE BOYS ARE FESTIVAL BACK IN TOWN GREEN MEADOWS
raise money for the ward. Dodgy are just one of many highlights over the weekend and we are looking forward to a fantastic festival."
Dodgy had 12 top 40 singles in the 1990s including Good Enough and Staying Out for the Summer. Other bands include F.O.X who’ve just finished supporting Depeche Mode on their European tour, and Lisbee Stainton who’s a Radio 6 regular as well as other up and coming acts covering indie to ska. The DJ stage, called Beats Boutique, features an eclectic range of DJs playing northern soul, house, disco and drum ’n’ bass. There’s also live graffiti and chainsaw carving demonstrations. Certainly something completely different there! Britpop pioneers Dodgy are amongst the acts featuring at the Green Meadows Festival this year. The festival, which takes place on the weekend of September 13 – 14, features two days of live music, DJs and arts. The festival takes place near to another lovely village in our area, that’s Barnwell near Oundle, and is in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust's Addenbrookes Ward. Organiser Ollie Sharp told me – "We are delighted to secure such a strong list of acts to help

The weekend also features a children's area including a disco, inflatables, arts and crafts. Last year £3,380 was handed over to the charity and organisers are confident more money will be raised this year as the festival expands and the signs are looking good already as early ticket sales are strong. Tickets start at £25 for adults for the weekend and £5 for children. Further details can be found at www.greenmeadowsfestival.org
A number of years ago, I went to the London Road Drill Hall to see a band called Thin Lizzy (who at the time were unknown) and stood chatting to the legendary Phil Lynott (although I didn’t know who he was either) and was blown away by their own brand of Celtic rock. Myself and all fans of Thin Lizzy have a great chance to keep the spirit of Lizzy alive, when Limehouse Lizzy visit Bourne Corn Exchange on Saturday September 14. They’ve toured around Europe and the UK for many years with a powerful show originally dedicated to the memory of Phil Lynott, but now they have added a tribute in their set to the late Gary Moore (ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist and world renowned solo artist) who sadly passed away last year. Following the enormous success of their Live & Dangerous and Dedication tours, the band embarked upon their Into the Limelight tour to tie in with their appearance on an episode of BBC2’s Arena documentary series of the same name. The tour travelled as far as a headline slot at a rock festival in Greece, and the Virgin Atlantic
Music Festival in Barbados. The band appeared alongside diverse world music acts, and played a Thin Lizzy set representing the Celtic rock genre. In 2013 the band's European tour continues to explore and celebrate the artistic and musical legacy of the hard-living, hardrocking, yet at times surprisingly tender and romantic artist that was Philip Lynott. This year they will be appearing in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France,
Holland and Belgium. Expect more of the Celtic influenced tracks like Whisky in the Jar and Black Rose, amongst the usual razzamatazz and classic tracks Emerald, The Boys are Back in Town, Sarah and many others we’ve come to enjoy from one of the most highly rated acts on the circuit. Tickets are available from Bourne Corn Exchange box office on 07828 032241.

WHITE CLOUDS AND GUNFIRE BURLESQUE ARE BACK! As those who visited The Willow Festival this year will probably know, Burlesque have reformed. The band originated in 2005 and gigged regularly for a number of years until 2012 when they split. However, they weren’t dormant for long and re-emerged by popular demand in 2013. The reformed incarnation of the band introduced two new members; Andy Greaves on drums and Pete Boyd on bass. They join Penny Lane on vocals and Craig Hardie on guitar, who remain from the original line up and are founder members of the band. The members are all involved in other musical bands and projects, and have a diverse range of musical tastes, making
Burlesque a band of many musical facets. This is apparent if you look at their set which was particularly popular with crowds at this summer's festivals at Needingworth, and latterly The Willow Festival in Peterborough. They specialise in classic and contemporary rock which their current setlist shows, featuring the music of Queens of the Stone Age, Skunk Anansie, Heart, Blondie, The Cranberries, and The Cult amongst many others. Burlesque are gigging locally again in September at The Bluebell, Dogsthorpe on Friday September 20 and at the Punchbowl’s BBQ in Spalding on the afternoon of Sunday September 29 from 4 – 7pm.
Energetic, entertaining and highly contagious. Peterborough's very own White Clouds and Gunfire (WCAG) are about to drop their debut album For All the Non-Believers on Monday September 2. ESP’s, Alex Jones caught up with Evey, the lead singer of the five piece rock outfit to talk about their new album, their new label and their new ambitions... Towing the line between the rock musicianship of Green Day and the pop melodies of Lady Gaga, WCAG have established themselves with music fans and critics alike as ones to watch this year. With a sound that’s asking to be moved to and a live show that rarely drops out of fifth gear they're a band who have partied their way to success. So what can we expect from their debut release?

Evey – “The album is an honest representation of where the band is at this moment. We just hope people listen and enjoy it! It’s daunting to be releasing it to the world actually, but so far the feedback’s been really positive.”
WATER NEWTON
FESTIVAL
Great to see another music festival emerge in the area. This time it’s the Water Newton Music Festival being held in the beautiful setting of the village green on the afternoon of Sunday September 1. Music is running through the whole afternoon from 1pm – 7pm. There’s a wide variety of live music on offer including, folk, jazz and rock and the event features Pennyless (pictured), Grounded, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Identity Crisis so something to please everyone. Food and drink are on the menu with a licensed bar and a hog roast. It’s a charity event run by the Friends of St Remigius Church in the village, and gates will open at 12.30pm. Admission is by ticket only and they’re available on 01733 237500.
And why wouldn't it be? New single Poison is a slice of anthemic pop that will burrow itself into your head for weeks if you let it. With songs like this as well as a blistering live show under their belts WCAG are a force to be reckoned with. So why after seven years are the band just now becoming the target of critics’ attention? “The band’s gone through several different line-ups along the way,” Evey explains. “I joined originally to do the synths and help with backing vocals but after our lead singer left I volunteered to front the band which is something I'd never done before! I think we've finally found our sound and the new album is the best stuff we've ever written.” Having recently been signed to I Am Mighty Records the band has just finished a UK tour which saw them scale the length and breadth of the country. So now that they're
back in town can we catch them playing in a more familiar environment? “We’re playing at the Met Lounge on Friday September 20 with Phoenix Calling (another Peterborough band) and go back out on a UK tour at the end of October! “Our shows are 35 minutes of fun!” Evey smiles. “Me and the boys have such a great time on stage and our enthusiasm is contagious. The one thing people say to us over and over again is ‘wow, I wasn't expecting that!’” Just like the Spanish Inquisition, nobody expects the antics of a WCAG show. So what’s next for the band? With a label backing them and an ever-growing fanbase the band can afford to relax a little right? Evey – “No! That’s what everyone thinks – that once you're signed you can breathe a little easier. To be honest we've done the exact opposite. We're planning the next music video, sorting out the next tour and keeping busy! It'd be our absolute dream to take part in something like The Warped Tour so we're going to keep working hard to make that possible.” With a thirst for success and a religious like dedication to succeeding WCAG are on the rise. If you're yet to join the church of Pop Rock prepare to be converted. New album For All The Non-Believers is out Monday September 2 and you can catch the band live at the Met Lounge on Friday September 20. New single Poison is available on iTunes.
