NENE VALLEY FESTIVAL TIME We are lucky to have such a wonderful conservation area all along the River Nene and now nature lovers can celebrate this beautiful space with the Nene Valley Festival. Running from September 19 to September 27, the festival has a jam-packed programme of outdoor family events, guided tours, water pursuits, concerts, cycle rides, local walks and foodie events.
BEAR SUPPORTS RIDE AND STRIDE DAY Adventurer and TV star Bear Grylls is backing a special event to get us venturing out in the great outdoors whilst safeguarding some of our heritage. Ride and Stride Day is a national event with a local stage happening in Peterborough on Saturday September 12. The idea is to get out an about and discover some of our beautiful historic churches along your route and to get sponsored for doing so. Starting in Castor you’ll tour Marholm, Upton, Ailsworth, Sutton, Water Newton and Stibbington on foot, on your bike or in your car. There’ll be refreshments available at the churches including afternoon tea and local beer. You can follow clues on a map to find out more about the history of the villages and these wonderful buildings. Bear Grylls says – “Many historic churches, chapels and meeting houses are battling to survive. Roofs leak, ancient timbers rot and medieval stonework crumbles. Now you can help by joining the Ride+Stride adventure, a sponsored bike ride or walk discovering beautiful churches, which also raises money for their repair and preservation.” It’s organised here by the Cambridge Historic Churches Trust www.camhct.uk/ride You’ll need to get sponsored for every place of worship you visit by cycle, car or on foot during the day. It coincides with Heritage Open Days so there’ll be other events and places to visit alongside the churches and chapels, especially in Peterborough so check www.heritageopendays.org.uk to see what’s on. To take part in the local event email hello@castorchurchtrust.co.uk for sponsor forms and a map or visit www.rideandstrideuk.org to find out more.
Events include everything from a Beers, Brews and Burger tour and tasting sessions from September 19 September 27 at the Tap and Kitchen in Oundle to the chance to Discover Wild Food on September 22 at Ferry Meadows Country Park or why not get really close to the River Nene by taking the family canoeing or kayaking from the Trek Kits centre at Oundle from September 19 - 20? This is a must-go-to-event for wildlife and culture lovers of all ages looking for inspiration, tranquility and new experiences. SKDC chief executive Beverly Agass says: “The festival gives us the chance to celebrate everything that’s great about Stamford, both historically and as the modern, enchanting town that it is today.
“Stamford’s second Georgian Festival is very much building on the success of our first event in 2013 when some 22,000 people visited the town on the Saturday. As a council we constantly strive to promote Stamford as a great place, not only as a destination and a wonderful place to visit, but also an incredibly attractive place to live work and invest in.” Much of the festival is free to visitors such as the street market; however you will need to get tickets for special events such as Horrible Histories, ghost walks and the Georgian fashion show. For more info on this wonderful event you can visit www.stamfordgeorgianfestival.co.uk and tickets are available from Stamford Arts Centre on 01780 763203.

ISLE DO AN INDECENT PROPOSAL pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk
A survey of 1,000 Brits by 34SP.com revealed 70% found it acceptable to propose via mobile phone. Tradition is obviously dead. Think I'll propose with a Hula Hoop crisp as a ring in Morrison's then.

DAVID WITH A FORD AND A SEMI Up until now I thought I was a Mr Average but that was until I discovered that Mr Average owns a Ford Focus and is called David. No disrespect to all the Davids I know but if I look like a typical David then the Pope doesn’t pray for a living. What’s worse is that David owns a run of the mill Ford Focus. Kill me now. MADE AN OFFER HE DID REFUSE? Regular customers of Papa Luigi on London Road may have noticed how good their pizzas taste right now and it’s all thanks to a new chef. The previous pizza maker had a difference of opinion with the proprietor. It seems he’s been made an example of and left to hang in public just as Mussolini was. Whatever his crime at least he died with some dignity – those Nike’s are bang on.

Management have promised to bring us the best local talent both in front of and behind the microphone and there’s a focus on providing opportunities for educationally disadvantaged groups, as well as creating a platform for charities and community groups to promote their aims and services. Hereward is also keen to stage outside broadcasts and support events across the city. MY WORD OF THE MONTH
ROSÉ
The four 30-something women shall remain nameless. A window was open and I was treated to an afternoon of alcohol fuelled female chatter. This is what’s discussed after a few bottles of Rosé on a summer’s day: Bobby Cristina, grown men in nappies, rubbish project managers, Robin Williams, nail varnish, kids, office politics, difference between wasps and hornets, journalists, photography, transvestites, taxi drivers and the corporate world. How fascinating.
BINGO-ING OUT WITH MIKEY I’ve discovered a new pastime and ESP reporter Mikey Clarke and his missus Rachael are to blame. My significant other and I are now regulars with the Clarke’s at Gala Bingo. What first started as ‘something different to do’ has now become a ‘let’s get it in the diary’ every month.
WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE CAKE
I’ve been twice and won absolutely nothing. I’m desperate to win just so I can shout “Bingo!” No-one when I’ve been calls out “Bingo” and I would have thought it’s all part of the fun in going. But at least the Gala grub’s a winner. Next time I’ll yell “Bingo” on my approval of their fluffy jacket potato with cheese and beans. Yum.
And here’s yet another unconvincing survey this time from the makers of Great British Bake Off. It’s been predicted that 80% of UK workers who hate their jobs will be starting a new business by the end of this year. Labelled ‘passionpreneurs’ 18-34 year-olds in particular are working 5pm to 9pm on developing their hobbies into business dreams outside of their 9 ‘til 5 job. That’s believable.
But what isn’t believable is the majority are working on baking, sewing, crochet and knitting. Did someone transport us back to the Victorian age and not tell me? If we take 26 as the average age within the 18-34 bracket then I would take an educated guess their hobbies (and I’ll speak for males) would probably include: boozing, sex, gaming, gym, porn and Facebook. Seriously, who compiles these surveys?!
MR BEN LEADS BY EXAMPLE BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Ben Stevenson has many guises including producer, compare and ‘runner’.
EDITOR STRUCK BY BIKE BUG! The motorcycle community has enrolled yet another female into the fold and although my editor Sharon has yet to take the controls of an iron horse, she’s sat in the saddle and loving it.
If he’s not putting together radio shows then he’s performing match day announcer duties at Posh or competing in the Perkins Great Eastern Run. And it’s the latter that I’m most impressed by. Ben’s pictured nearing the finish line at last year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run and he doesn’t look in bad shape after completing 13 miles. He’s proof that whatever your fitness level taking part and finishing our city’s excellent half marathon is achievable.
Sharon enjoys the rush and freedom motorcycling gives you and that’s just riding pillion with a mate! But so many women I know are reluctant to take the next step of actually riding a bike themselves.
This year’s race is shaping up to be the biggest yet and it’s not too late to set yourself a challenge. I’ve run it three times and can honestly say the only feeling so far in my life better than crossing that finishing line was when I had my first kiss in a farmer’s field in 1986.
I feel a niche business idea coming on. Sharon: fancy scrapping the magazine and opening a ladies only motorcycling school called Easy Riders?
Race day is Sunday October 11 and entry’s open until a week before. Do it. Let Ben’s sprint finish photo inspire you.
DOWN UNDER’S ITALIAN PONY VISIT Peterborough’s boxing representative in Australia – Frankie ‘knuckles’ Jay Lee – has been back in the homeland and training with yours truly and the rest of our city’s Italian stable. Frankie’s been taking tips off our ‘dangerous’ stallion Cello Renda and George ‘the machine’ Mundo. Rosanna and I are just in the photo to add some glam. Best of luck back in Aus Frankie. Make it happen. I know you will.

t’s only a few weeks now until Peterborough’s very own halfmarathon the Perkins Great Eastern Run and there’s also the Anna’s Hope fun run for the kids and those content with the 2-3 miles. After all a half-marathon is a ruddy long way! I used to race the fun run as a kid whilst my parents did the half but now I’ve got my own kids and am really pleased that they’re just as keen to get involved whilst I tackle the 13.1 miles touring the city. It’s a real family event and always great to see kids, parents and even grandparents all running together, if you haven’t already registered then I recommend just going for it, you can even raise a few quid for charity too!
The PGER on Sunday October 11 is supporting a local charity which is close to my heart and a very worthy cause. Stamford based Anna’s Hope provides invaluable help and support within our region for children and young teens battling against brain tumours. I am very proud to have helped raise funds and awareness for them over the last year or so during my
It’s been a couple of years since I’ve run the PGER during which time I’ve raised my game to the likes of racing 156 miles across the Sahara, 69 miles along Hadrian’s wall in a day and two laps of the 20 mile obstacle race at Burghley to name just a few, it’s been a pretty tough slog! So you’d imagine a simple half-marathon to be a walk in the park in comparison right? Nonetheless a race is a race and this year I hope to bag myself a new personal best so it’s going be a tough run. Please give me a shout if you see me passing as I’ll need all the encouragement I can get! It’s great to be part of such a big event and especially in your home town. You get to run the streets where you grew up and often notice friends cheering you on from their front gardens as you pass which is great, the crowds are brilliant along the course and really help to keep your spirits up. I urge everyone to get involved in this event no matter your age or ability, if you’re not much of a runner then perhaps just walk or jog the Anna’s Hope fun run, or for the more ambitious among you then maybe bite the bullet and go for the half, you may surprise yourself and the feeling after completing something like this is amazing.

ESP's Mikey Clarke talks to Lewis Saunderson about his new film and how the people of Peterborough can learn the skills to follow in his footsteps... exploring the destructive relationships between peers and family.
At ESP Magazine, we do our best to promote as much local talent as we can. We're regularly screaming from the rooftops about actors, bands, singers, dancers, athletes, etc. So, when local actor Lewis Saunderson told us about his upcoming movie The Lost Choices, we were keen to find out more. The Lost Choices secured a major distribution deal with METRODOME (Human Traffic & Donnie Darko) and will be making its UK release this month. The gritty and hard-hitting film studies the effects of abuse in several forms with three lives –
Lewis plays the role of Jimmy, starring opposite Mark Wingett (The Bill, Snow White and the Huntsman and cult hit Quadrophenia) who plays his on-screen Dad. During our chat, I asked Lewis to tell me more about his character. “Jimmy is the cousin to the main character in the film and is very vulnerable and protective over his Dad,” he told me. “When his cousin arrives, after years of being away, he brings trouble into Jimmy’s life.” How did the local actor get the role in the first place? He said, “I originally applied for Modern Days, a new British Independent Film set during the 1960’s in London and Brighton which followed the Mods and was successful in securing a main role. However, writer/director Jamie Thomson was

TAKE 2 THE SCREEN offers weekly acting to camera classes – a chance for locals to show off their acting skills in front of the camera and learn more about the film industry and how it works behind the scenes. The lessons are designed, structured and aimed at ages 6 - 18 and will take place at Tu Danse Studios on Newark Road every Sunday during school term time only from September 13. During our chat, Lewis said, “My best friend and business partner (Amir Elam) and I, sat down at the beginning of summer and were speaking about what Peterborough was lacking

in terms of children and young adults who are looking to gain experience in front of the camera and get a better understanding about filmmaking. We quickly came up with the idea of designing classes to equip the student with the skills and techniques required to perform naturally and truthfully in front of a camera, as well as gaining knowledge regarding the other aspects of filmmaking.” Lewis continued, “The classes will increase the pupils’ confidence, discipline and understanding of how to perform for the camera in a fun, creative and supportive environment. They will improve on many qualities such as: communication skills, teamwork, focus, improvisation and spontaneity. All these aspects will be covered and strengthened throughout their time with us. It will be fast paced, fun and will expand the pupils’ knowledge and will focus on developing skills specifically designed for screen.” For more information regarding times and cost, you can email: info.take2thescreen@gmail.com or call 07597 596896.
advised to write a story that would be more realistically achievable to make on a tight budget (around £100,000) for his first movie, so he wrote The Lost Choices and included the part of Jimmy for me.” Describing the favourite thing about being on set, Lewis told me, “It was getting the opportunity to work with Mark Wingett, as I grew up watching him in The Bill. He was so open, relaxed, and funny. He was happy to spend the time to work on our father/son relationship in order to bring truth and naturalism to the performance.” The movie will play at selected cinemas in Kent, Birmingham and London this month. If you don't get a chance to see it on the big screen, you can watch it on DVD when it’s released on October 1.

Time certainly flies when you’re having fun and for me, that usually involves eating delicious food with family and friends. So for the September issue, I’m focusing on a very sociable harvest meal for 1,000 people in Cathedral Square, Peterborough, traditional countryside dining with a twist and an intriguing secretive cake club.
A RIGHT ROYAL TREAT!
www.theroyaloakduddington.com
IT’S TIME FOR TEA AND CAKE! What better time for me to introduce The Clandestine Cake Club (CCC) than when baking fever is at an all time high with The Great British Bake Off being aired on our screens.
CCC is the thing dreams are made of for cake lovers and social butterflies alike. The idea is to bring people together through their love of home baked cakes, who meet in a secret location revealed just before the time of meeting and eating!
The Peterborough club has been going for 18 months and it’s become a close group of likeminded friends who enjoy baking with all different baking abilities. They even held a Glastonbury themed event which was very popular with plenty of cool and quirky cakes being baked (and eaten) on the day. For more info on joining a club visit www.clandestinecakeclub.co.uk.
Founded by Lynn Hill in the summer of 2010, the first CCC event was held in Leeds and our two local clubs are Stamford and Peterborough.

Evening diners can enjoy some mouthwatering meals such as fresh Cromer crab with chili and lime risotto topped with fresh parmesan shavings, Scottish sirloin steaks and Thai style sizzling king prawn stir-fry, Monday Thursdays from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. The timing couldn’t be better as many consumers are becoming more conscientious about the food they eat whilst thinking about traceability and the environmental impacts.
Another key factor adding to the attraction of The Royal Oak is that they understand the importance of fresh and seasonal food and support local producers where they can, sourcing ingredients from wonderful places such as Blatherwycke Estate.
When it comes to large scale eating experiences, it’s going to be pretty hard to beat the Metal Harvest Festival this September. 500 diners will be fed at a sit down meal whilst stands and stalls in Cathedral Square will cater for a further 500 on Sunday September 20.

There’s a food and craft market on Saturday September 19 too, for more on the festival please visit www.metalculture.com or call 01733 893077.

Peterborough Olympian Louis Smith and local actor and TV star Warwick Davis are both backing the campaign and you too can help raise cash for this charity by wearing your jeans to school, college or work. Wider hips and thighs and a small waist can be hard to fit. You need jeans that hug the curves but cinch into the waist. If you’re tall, choose wider leg styles to balance out your lower half. If you’re shorter, a baby bootcut will work well. A straight leg jean suits most people but check out higher waistbands so there’s no gaping round the waist. A higher rise also lengthens legs. A dark denim with good recovery stretch will be the most flattering. If you have a tummy, choose a heavier weight denim to hold you in. Too much stretch will not support you. Avoid too much embellishment on the back pockets if you don’t want to draw attention to your bottom.
Smaller bodies always need balance so they don’t look overwhelmed by what they are wearing. Never choose jeans with wide legs, flares or lots of fabrics. A baby boot cut, straight jean or cropped are your best options. Ruching up the bottom of an extra long straight jean is OK too. You can choose any colour but darker denim is more slimming.
Apple Bodies with weight around the mid section with a higher, flatter bottom need to show off their slim legs. Choose straight leg styles with high pocket detail. A low-mid rise is often the best option as high waisted jeans can cut you in two. Choose less elasticity to keep your tummy held in.
Boyish Generally, straighter slimmer figures can wear most styles. Use zips, pockets, shading and washes to give the illusion of shape. Baggier, boyfriend styles will add shape to thighs and pocket details will balance out flatter bottoms. A mid to low rise usually gives the best fit. No need for stretch.

Mid to low rise with low back pockets, light colours, shading or washing will give shape and shorten. Cropped jeans can look like they are just too short so choose ones that end around three inches above the ankle.
Short legs Mid to high rise, higher placement of back pockets, darker colours in straight or boot cut will lengthen. Skinny jeans tucked into boots the same colour will also work well. Cropped jeans with low fronted shoes, such as flip flops, or high heels will be your summer option. Of course, you are not limited to jeans this year. Denim is HOT in skirts – A-line with button through is bang on trend at the moment, dungarees, jump suits, shirts and dresses, so if jeans aren’t for you it’s not an issue.
Blue Inc Navy Rinse Zip Up Skinny Fit Jeans £19.99
White Stuff Mid Blue Straight Cut Jean £49.95
Guys Slimmer build guys can wear most styles. Much will depend on your own preference. A standard straight jean suits most body types but a slim tapered leg will look great on a leaner frame. Like boots? Then choose a boot cut to accommodate chunky footwear. Bulkier frames and those with wide shoulders need to be balanced. Slim leg styles will be hard to fit so look for loose tapered, boot cut and a looser straight style. Styles that taper at the ankle suit men with longer legs and narrower shoulders. The lower the back pocket, the shorter the leg appears. The darker the denim, the more ‘dressy’ the jean will look.
Burton Coat £80 Sweatshirt £20 Jeans £28 Desert Boots £48
The cleaner the seam work, the smoother it'll feel against your skin. Avoid too much stretch in the fabric because the jeans will become too large, too quickly.

New judges, new hosts and a Peterborough contestant to root for – time to get excited about the return of The X Factor…
Photo: Emma Bothamley
The city’s already been represented by local guy Craig Saggers and Diva Fever appearing on the show in the past, as well as Aston Merrygold and his band JLS going on to achieve incredible success after being runners up in 2008. Aston’s now carving out a successful solo career and we’re hoping he’ll return to his hometown for a gig!
Nicole Lawrence
T
here’s nothing better than having a local contestant to get behind in TV talent shows and this year’s X Factor will see Peterborough singer Nicole Lawrence making a second appearance on the show! We’ve always known Nicole was a great singer and anyone who’s seen her in action will tell you what a fantastic entertainer she is so it’s fingers crossed as she takes another chance on the ITV show. She last took part in 2009 when she reached the Judges Houses stage before losing out.

So as a new series of The X Factor kicks off there are a few changes this year with Radio 1’s Breakfast show host Nick Grimshaw and singer Rita Ora joining long standing judges Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Simon Cowell. Cheryl returns to the panel for her fifth series, after last year taking Lauren Platt all the way to the semi-finals. Cheryl was previously a judge on The X Factor from series five to series
seven, securing victory in 2008 with Alexandra Burke and 2009 with Joe McElderry. ESP cover star Cheryl is buzzing about the new series – “I haven't been as excited about an X Factor season since I first became a judge. The addition of Rita and Grimmy along with some interesting changes we've made to the format has refocused us to do what we do best, finding talent and making stars. I cannot wait to get started!” Popstar Rita Ora is no stranger to The X Factor having first appeared on the show in 2012 as a guest judge and said – "I am excited to be coming back to The X Factor – I had a ball here in 2012. This is a journey I can't wait to embark on to find some talented singers. It’s the new generation taking over. Booooom!"
New judge Nick Grimshaw slides into Louis Walsh’s chair and he’s a well-known fan of the show – "I love X Factor and have watched the series religiously since it started. Music is my job and my passion and I'm really looking forward to seeing what talent we can find and nurture this year. I can't wait for Judges Houses in Oldham!" The new panel is part of a number of changes to this year’s series of The X Factor, which also include brand new hosts Caroline Flack and Olly Murs. The new series will see the auditions move out of the rooms, with hopefuls like Peterborough’s Nicole Lawrence having to perform in front of an arena audience from the very start. That’s not the only change though as TV Presenter and KISS FM Radio DJ, Melvin Odoom and popstar and TV presenter, Rochelle Humes from The Saturdays take over the reigns of The Xtra Factor on ITV2. So get settled on the sofa and let’s get behind Nicole – we already think she has the X Factor whatever happens!

THE MARTIAN Cast: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor Director: Ridley Scott
There’s plenty of buzz surrounding this sci-fi adventure – which sees Matt Damon’s astronaut Mark Watney stranded on Mars. During a manned mission to the Red Planet, Watney is presumed dead and left behind by his crew after a fierce storm, but now with only a month’s worth of supplies he must try and survive on the hostile planet for up to four years until the next mission – especially if he can’t get a signal back to Earth that he is alive. And if he does, to what lengths will his colleagues and the powers-that-be go to get him back – with potentially billions of pounds at stake to do so. An all-star cast, including Damon’s Interstellar co-star Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a

Amy Schumer joins the likes of Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy in being the latest female comedy sensation from America – and on the evidence of her first movie she could just be the best at what she does. The genius of her first starring vehicle is that it isn’t just a consistent comedy – but is equally adept at the emotional switch it makes for the finale.

10 THE MAZE RUNNER: SCORCH TRIALS The inevitable sequel to last year’s The Hunger Games-alike Maze Runner sees Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow ‘Gladers’ searching for clues that will lead them to the mysterious organisation known as WCKD. Their journey takes them into the ‘Scorch’ – a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles – where they team up with a group of resistance fighters as they look for answers.
Schumer might be a bit too crude and near-the-knuckle for some tastes – taking it to the next level in the foulmouthed stakes – but gets it spot-on as the thirty-something clubbing their life away due to the fear of commitment. That makes her the perfect fit, not only for The 40-Year-Old Virgin director Judd Apatow – who arguably pieces together his best work since 2007’s Knocked Up – but also her collaboration with fellow Saturday Night Live regular and co-star Bill Hader (Superbad and current voice of Fear in Inside Out), as they effortlessly bounce their different comedic styles off each other. With Amy (Schumer) – along with her little sister Kim (21 Jump Street’s Brie Larson) – having it drilled into her that being faithful in marriage isn’t possible by her rogue of a father Gordon (Colin Quinn), this has turned her into a commitment-phobic partying-to-the-early-hours career woman, who isn’t afraid of a onenight stand – in fact, many of them. But when Amy’s boss (The Beach’s Tilda Swinton) at a tabloid-type magazine gives her a new journalistic assignment, she finds herself falling for the subject of a new article – up-
and-coming sports doctor Aaron (Hader) – which may just take Amy out of the rut she’s in, and make her face her fears. Great support comes in many unexpected forms, from the already mentioned Hader, Quinn, Larson and Swinton, her work colleagues – including The Interview’s Randall Park, hapless pal Nikki (Vanessa Bayer) and Ezra Miller – plus surprisingly eyebrow-raising turns from both WWE legend John Cena, and particularly top Cleveland Cavaliers NBA superstar LeBron James (which may have just got him the Space Jam 2 gig). Throw in a hilarious movie (which Schumer watches on a date with Cena) from dog-walker Daniel Radcliffe and a flighty Marisa Tomei – another nice touch that really sets the tone for the entirety – then you’ve got a film that is consistently funnier than recent yardsticks such as Bridemaids. The change of pace, when the inevitable explosive break-up happens two-thirds through, seems like it could take it into stereotypical romcom territory – but again, this is handled in such a endearing way that you can’t help but find it likeable. In the end you root for the leading couple as they try and ‘find’ themselves, and even though there are one or two pacing issues, this is the complete opposite of the film’s title. This girl’s a natural, and she’s gonna be a star . . . making this undoubtedly the best comedy of the summer by a country mile.

If there’s one thing my mate Justin Beaumont loves doing it’s showing off his Harley.
Justin’s pride and joy – a glorious Harley Davidson FXSTC Softail Custom – sums up what a proper Harley should look and sound like. The Custom is all about lots of chrome, comfort and plenty of earth shattering noise. You can hear Justin coming from a mile away! Image is important when you ride a Harley. It may sound corny but for Justin it’s all about an Easy Rider inspired leather jacket, a WW2 derived tin helmet and trimmed facial hair where your handlebar moustache forms a ‘t’ like pattern with a chin-to-bottom-lip landing strip. Chunky boots and a mean pair of sun glasses finish the look off. Move over Arnie in Terminator 2: Judgement Day… Justin’s in town! And he’s been in town on his Harley for four years. He told me: “It was a chance visit to the Sycamore Harley dealership in Uppingham. I liked the look of the
34

bike, took it for a spin and bought it on the spot. I guess it was an impulse buy but it’s probably the only Harley I will ever own, so I aim to keep it for as long as possible.” What makes Justin different to most other bikers I know is that he’s not really a motorcycle mad kind of guy. Yes he loves his Harley but you wouldn’t enter into conversation with him about which oil he uses or Valentino Rossi’s chances of claiming his 10th Moto GP world title. It’s actually quite refreshing. “Yes, the embarrassing thing is I’m not, and never will be, a motorcycle anorak and don't really have a clue about different bike makes, models, performance or anything like that. I therefore cannot hold anything remotely like a sensible conversation with those who know what they’re talking about. “All I know is that my Harley is lovely to ride, it’s a bit like sitting on my sofa and I could never imagine me swapping it for a sports bike. I doubt sports bike riders would appreciate my bike either. I’ve been riding for 10 years but no bike I’ve been on comes close to the attention my Harley attracts.
Pep Cipriano
Basically I’m more desperate for attention the older I’ve become!” So he may not be into motorcycle mania like the rest of us but at least Justin likes the attention (I think we all do) and knows where to get it. “I don't really get the chance to ride it that often so the bike’s pretty clean. I do however polish it at least once a week regardless of whether I’ve ridden it or not. Bit sad really! “But when I do throw my leg over the tank I prefer to go on the routes around Leicestershire. My bike is a cruiser and some of those scenic roads suit my speed. Sports bikes will still often pass me but I like to think
I’m soaking everything up around me and there’s no better place to enjoy your bike than on a decent B-road.” Agreed. There’s no better feeling than whistling through those bends and taking in the sights and smells of the countryside. It’s just you and your machine but often when there’s an audience embarrassing moments do occur. “I’ve had one like we all have. I pulled into a garage and must have had my mind on other things because I forgot to put the stand down before getting off. It wasn’t my most glorious moment trying to pick it up in front of a laughing audience but at least there was no significant damage to my bike.”
MONEY SAVIING
TIPS FOR CAR BUYERS
✓
Finance brokers can help make your next car purchase more affordable, however there are still some myths out there that prevent people from reaping the moneysaving benefits of using a broker.
LEARN HOW YOUR OWN MOTORCYCLE WORKS What do you do when you’ve been fixing motorcycles for more than 45 years and have a team of bike know-how with 90 years combined? You share it with us mortals, that’s what you do! Peter O’Dell is the proud owner of The Motorcycle Works Ltd in Werrington and he’s about to pass on all his experience to regular bikers like me who could use a lesson or two on keeping our rides ship shape. The idea is to launch a series of motorcycle maintenance classes from his unit in Benedict Square; so that riders can get to know the basics from checking oil levels and chain tension to tyre pressures and clutch lever adjustment.
Pete told me: “It’s basic stuff in a no pressure environment. We’re in the middle of putting it all together and I’d like some customer feedback as to what kind of things they’d like to learn about.
In the meantime Pete prides himself on offering a complete motorcycle package and “noone in Peterborough comes with more experience” which means your machine is in well oiled hands.
“So many bikes come in for an MOT with under inflated tyres or loose chains for example and it’s run of the mill maintenance like this that will end up saving you money and potentially your life. If it takes off then we might introduce some kind of online teaching manual too.”
Whether you’re after a rebuild, tuning, alarm fitting, tyres, servicing, batteries, restorations or an MOT The Motorcycle Works Ltd has it all and more. The workshop is open Monday to Saturday from 8.30am until 5.30pm. Call 01733 578883.
Tom Perkins and Simon Grace from Charles & Dean told me there are a few myths on the subject they’re keen to dispel. You might think you’re better off shopping around for a finance deal yourself but if you’re looking for the best possible finance deal on a new or used car, they say the only way you can truly shop around is by using a finance broker as they have immediate fast access to some of the most competitive lenders in the country and can liaise with the car dealership on your behalf. “At Charles & Dean, we don’t charge a fee to provide information and we take a ‘non-salesy’ approach – allowing our competitive deals to speak for themselves,” says Tom. “We’re able to offer the same types of finance packages that car dealerships can offer, including Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) packages and we’re able to finance used cars, as well as new cars,” adds Simon, “and car manufacturer warranties and used car warranties are not affected by using a finance broker.” For more information and for the best deal on car finance call Charles & Dean on 01780 763836 (8am until 8pm, seven days a week).

They can be mixed into your plate of pasta or rice dish initially so you can slowly get used to eating them allowing you to a. crowd out some of the grains and b. get used to new tastes and textures slowly. Or you can buy them as the flour such as whole buckwheat flour to make pancakes or healthy biscuits. I even baked a cake with cooked quinoa and it was delish. Mixing them with roasted veg and salads is also another way to enjoy them.

magine eating a food that may be wreaking havoc with your hormonal regulation, cause spikes in your insulin and blood sugars causing your blood sugar levels to swing high and low during the day causing not only fatigue, but possible weight gain, inflammation, bloating, IBS type symptoms, brain fog, irritability, cravings and a host of other issues. Well imagine no more, if your diet is predominately bread, pasta, crackers, rice, oats and other cereals, pastries, pizza, biscuits or cakes then you need to take a second look at the effects these types of foods may be having on your health.
They are naturally gluten free so this can give you something more than the range of nasty gluten free breads/cakes etc which are full of fillers and chemicals – many tasting like cardboard and not food! They are easier to digest than those of the grains, less dense and gluey and move through digestion more easily. People often comment on how much lighter they feel inside. Life is all about balance – eating a diet high in bread, pasta, wraps, cereals and other starchy grains is not balance, even if it is wholemeal/wholegrain many of us eat too much which may contribute to some of the daily issues such as bloating, brain fog and cravings that we accept as the norm. Try the faux grains (fake ones) for a change, sometimes being fake is not all that bad! In health Karen
Whilst the wholemeal versions of these foods do offer fibre which we need for healthy bowels, blood sugar control and offering our friendly bacteria a food source, as well as vitamins and minerals we have all been duped into believing that these should form the basis of our diet whereas so many of us can feel better when we reduce them, or for some, remove them and swap with other healthy, nutritious options. So much of these common grains (wheat, oats, corn, rye, rice) have been taken by our food manufacturers, then been broken down (fragmented) and made into highly addictive convenience foods which we often crave. Once a simple grain that in its whole form, such as a wheat berry which when sprouted/soaked may offer us many health benefits, has now

turned into food that when taken all too frequently and in its manufactured form can cause health issues. There are so many more foods out there we can enjoy. Enter the fake grains, well they are actually not grains but seeds which are all high in nutrients, fibre and offer us a break from the above. Quinoa – a seed rich in B vitamins as well as high protein. Millet – rich in magnesium, (also known to contain goitrogen compounds that when eating in excess may block thyroid, however cooking – which you would anyway – reduces this and of course who would be eating millet, millet and nothing but millet?) so enjoy as a way of rotating foods.

ARFUR'S LAST 'NICE LITTLE EARNER'? Big money news people because at some point in 2016, the Bank of England are replacing the current £20 note. Yeah, I know exciting stuff. The new one introduced into everyday circulation across Britain will see a new face on the reverse, so instead of Adam Smith the 18th century economist nobody's heard of there'll be a new person ‘someone chosen from the visual arts’ according to the bank’s spokesman who has ‘helped shape British thought, innovation, leadership, values and society’. Now, the biggest visual art of our lifetime has got to be television and I can't think of a more appropriate person to have his 'boatrace' on the back of a £20 than the late, great George Cole who passed away last month. He of course played the legendary Arthur Daley in Minder, the loveable rogue and wheeler dealer who dealt only in cash to conduct his various business ventures. In 1979 Arthur Daley was the first TV character to regularly use the phrase 'a score' (cockney for £20) so he's intrinsically linked to the £20 in a way nobody else from 'the visual arts' is. Minder ran for 11 series between 1979-94, and became one of Britain's best ever comedy dramas, regularly topping the ratings with one of the most memorable; 'Minder on the Orient Express' having some of the train scenes filmed at the Nene Valley Railway. Arthur Daley was Cole's crowning achievement in his 70 years as
an actor plus he got an OBE for his services to drama from HRH the Queen in 1992 so it's not like she'll be unhappy to see his 'mush' on the other side to hers on the new £20 note. Arfur's choice phrases have also became part of the British language 'the world is your lobster', 'a

Basically the more views the video gets the more chance there'll be more episodes made, so full credit to Warwick for helping bring Gordon back from the bottom of the broom cupboard. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story develops so if you're reading Warwick (and if not I'm sure your daughter Annabelle will be) then how about Gordon as a guest on Celebrity Squares, with Philip Schofield in the centre square? It'd be great to see them re-united and also seeing Warwick learning ventriloquist skills to host the show and voice Gordon.
nice little earner' and 'Er indoors' which entered the Oxford English Dictionary in 1992, and with the 107 episodes of Minder on a permanent repeat loop on ITV4 his is still an ever present face on TV. So let's see his 'boat' on the back of a 'score'.
BILL'S BIG 'BORO SHOW If you missed last month's issue, then you might not have heard that Bill Bailey is bringing his 2016 tour Limboland to the Peterborough Arena at the showground on Saturday June 4, 2016. This is going to be a massive night for comedy in the city, and with a 5,000 capacity the venue is going to be rocking with laughter. If you love live comedy make sure you don't miss out on this. THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United… I have always wondered what it must be like to compete in a major sport against a member of your own family. I don’t know about you, but I hated losing at Tiddlywinks to my sister when I was growing up, so I can’t imagine what it must be like to look across at your opponent and see a member of your own family looking back at you. So how did two brothers both end up being goalkeepers. Well believe it or not, neither of them actually wanted to be one from a young age. Jak even had trials as a left-back for Newcastle United. “Both of us started outfield. I always fancied myself as a central midfielder and Jak was a left-back before signing for Sunderland as a goalkeeper.

“I got to an age when I was bigger than everyone else (I wouldn’t say fatter!) so I always got put in goal. My dad was a kick-boxing coach so I was always quite athletic and agile so that was part of the reason why I got stuck in goal because I was flying about everywhere! I think once I got to a certain age, Jak began to want to put my gloves on and have a go himself.
Serena Williams has faced her sister Venus in eight Grand Slam tournament finals and at Manchester United, Phil Neville and his brother Gary were often fighting for the same right-back slot, not just at club level, but also for England. Who knows how many caps Phil might have won had it not been for his big brother.

“As a keeper, you have to play your own game. I am always here for him if he needs me for advice and it would be great to see him do well. He burst into the Premier League at a young age. He did exactly what I would expect a young lad to do, he had some excellent games, some not so good games and some average games.
“I think a 1-0 win with Jak having a good game for Port Vale would be the ideal result for me,” Ben told me. “It doesn’t matter who I am up against, I want to win. It is hard to say how I am going to feel about it though. I have never played against him before. Last season he nearly
“...we both are desperate to win so I am sure it will be no different if we come up against each other on the pitch.”
Sporting family rivalry is an interesting subject. Here at Peterborough United, goalkeeper Ben Alnwick is six years older than brother Jak, who burst onto the Premier League scene last term at Newcastle United following an injury to Tim Krul.
“Me and my mates just smashed shots at him and he enjoyed diving about. We were just happy that we had found someone to kick balls at! My brother is six years younger than me so we got away with it.
Jak has just penned a short term deal at League One side Port Vale, which means this season the two brothers could go head to head in a professional fixture for the first time in their careers. As the older sibling, Ben has passed on a lot of experience but in sport, that family connection goes out of the window – a win is all that Ben would want.
went on loan to a club in League One just before we were due to play them – that is the closest we have come so far in our careers. “We are competitive together, whenever we play pool or FIFA, we both are desperate to win so I am sure it will be no different if we
come up against each other on the pitch. I think we probably both realised when we were growing up that there was a possibility that we might end up on opposite teams,” Ben said. I was a goalkeeper growing up. I know it might not seem like it with my slight frame, but as a teenager, I was often between the sticks, breaking my wrists trying to save ridiculously powerful shots and I have often wondered looking back, how stupid I was to suggest even donning the gloves.
“It was a mixed bag, but that is what you expect of someone without any experience in men’s football, but he has signed for Port Vale, had a couple of clean sheets in a row and is enjoying the start of his career at the club,” Ben concluded. Saturday October 17 is the first meeting between Port Vale and Peterborough United this season. It could be the day where an Alnwick will be keeping goal at either end. I bet the family are hoping for a 0-0 draw.

INTRODUCING… DJ T-Rex “No Diggity Peterborough Legends is held once every three months. The night focuses on RnB and hip hop from the 90s and early 2000’s when for me, hip hop and RnB had more substance. This is my era and wherever I play, I always throw a bit of old school in there. The next one is Friday September 11 and I’ll be playing alongside Supa T, Nick T, Rob T and DJ AJ.” Who inspires you on the music front?
Tell me about the nights you run and play at?
“My ultimate favourite has to be DJ Jazzy Jeff an amazing hip hop party DJ.
“I’ve been a resident DJ at Karma parties at Halo Club which has been running for about 4 years and I’m also on board with the Vanity crew for the No Diggity Peterborough Legends night at Red Room at Edwards which started this year.”
“When I was a kid I used to love listening to New York based DJs Funk Master Flex, Clark Kent – they had all the tunes and turntable tricks. Shortee Blitz is my favourite UK hip hop/RnB DJ and I’ve been lucky enough to play alongside him twice.
What's the essence of the nights?
“I also admire what DJ EZ does, the dude’s so tight with the mixes and I’ve played alongside him a few times too.”
“Karma Parties are an urban music night held once a month playing new and old RnB, funky house and hip hop with a jumping party atmosphere. I’ve played alongside and supported a lot of great acts like Kano, Wretch 32, Septa and Ms. Dynamite. “In August we had Sneakbo perform for the Karma birthday event and Bugzy Malone is coming Friday September 4, that’s going to be crazy!
46
www.espmag.co.uk
When did you first start DJing/producing? “I first started DJing around the age of 14 at friends and family parties and then started playing in clubs when I was just 16.” Do you think there’s enough music varity in Peterborough? “No I don’t, everything seems to be messed into one with pop music everywhere, which is cool if that’s what you’re into.” If you could play any tune and anywhere, what and where would it be? “That’s a hard question! If it was still open, the Tunnel in New York and I would play Junior Mafia Player’s Anthem. I would love to play in Japan so if anyone sees this and wants to book me to play in Japan I’m there!” How important is music to you on a personal level?
What music genre do you play when you're out and is this your favourite style of music?
“Music is really important to me, music is every day for me and I couldn’t go without it.”
“I play hip hop RnB and a bit of dancehall reggae stuff and I like most things but my first love is hip hop.”

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
A short while ago I went to see the Electric Warriors at the Swiss Cottage in Woodston and what a good night. The band are a three piece consisting of Steph Eldred on vocals and bass, Pip Seaton on guitar and vocals and Paul Blant on drums and vocals. I was prompted to go after seeing the Motivators at the Hootenanny at the Cresset earlier this year and of course both Steph and Pip featured in that band whilst Paul has been with Citizen Smith and Mighty Quinn in the past. Together they bring a really enjoyable variety of music featuring songs like Barefootin’ and All or Nothing together with a number of T.Rex tunes. Obviously the name Electric Warrior comes from the T.Rex album of that name and Steph’s voice blends perfectly into those Marc Bolan classics. Well worth going to see when they appear near you.
A recently released single by local artist Paul Errington is proving very successful in the music charts and gaining numerous radio airplays. It’s called Broken Hinges and really is a beautifully written and performed song. On this track, Paul is very much in the Paolo Nutini mould, which is why it appeals to me. The song was produced by Grant Henderson at Loom Studios in Leeds, who has an eye for up and coming talent, and Paul's Warp the Threads EP will be produced by Grant along with the legendary Mike Spink (The1975, Wolf Alice, Ben Howard) so I grabbed a word with Paul to find out more…
Carlos Parlato. The final mix will be done by Mike Spinx who has done a lot of work with Ben Howard.“ Where can we see you live locally? “We want to organise a venue locally and also plan to do Flash Busking here and in Cambridge.” Who influenced you? “To be honest, any great singer that I couldn’t begin to sing like but Paola Nutini, Sam Cooke, Joni Mitchell and John Lennon are big inspirations to me. All great singer songwriters.” What do you hope the future holds musically?
“I went to his studios and we linked so well during the session that I decided that for my part I had ultimate trust in Grant’s creative ability that I would leave all the final mixing to him. For his part, he was enthused by the song that he spent a lot longer on it than we both planned. We are so pleased with the final result.”
“I want to write creative music which is also successful on radio and in the charts. The term ‘pop’ is often looked at with contempt, sometimes deservedly, but I believe that the successful pop song can be the sign of having achieved the ultimate honing of a piece of music.”
Are there any more plans for recording? Maybe an album?
Whether that ambition comes true or not, Paul certainly has a promising musical future ahead of him.
“Yes we are creating an EP. We’re already in the studio doing five tracks. Grant will again be involved. But I’m getting some great groove collaboration with local Latin drummer

I received a pre release copy of the new album by the Chris Watson Band the other day. It’s called Bridge 27 and is released on September 11. It’s a very impressive eclectic mix of compositions from locally based jazz guitarist Chris, joined by bassist Bruno Urcivoli with Eddy Cavanagh on drums. The album also features guest appearances by Laurette Evelyn on vocals and Dave Lewis on tenor sax. Right from the first track, Persia, the mood of the album is atmospheric and varied with some superb guitar licks from Chris. Most of the tracks are his own compositions, and his writing is clearly influenced by nature and what Chris sees around him, and like all good jazz musicians, this creates some differing moods throughout. Earthman is a piece written in memory of Chris’s late band mate Mark Randall and Montego Rootz blends reggae into jazz very cleverly. There are 11 tracks featured and my personal favourites are the title track and Equinox, but there are some other equally impressive candidates. Chris who grew up in Peterborough, was influenced and encouraged by local legends Colin Hodgkinson and Lloyd Watson. After years away learning his art by touring and performing with Courtney Pine, Vic Damone and The Platters, he returned to the city where amongst all the musical projects he also teaches guitar. He is also in demand for recording session work. There is a launch gig for Bridge 27 at 7.30pm on Friday September 11 at The Parkway Sports and Social Club on Maskew Avenue and you can find out more about Chris on www.chriswatsonguitar.com

BENDRIX @ KEY STUDIO the psychedelia, and the era, revealing the songs in their pure form. Leaving behind the guitar altogether (Hendrix did that rather well…), Benji tackles his material on bouzouki, banjo and mandolin, and will perform the songs of Hendrix like you’ve never heard them before.
A well-known performer on the UK folk scene as a founding member of both folk big band Bellowhead, and acclaimed folk trio Faustus, Benji Kirkpatrick is a massive fan of Jimi Hendrix, and brings us his new solo project this month, reinterpreting the songs of Hendrix.
The live show on Thursday September 24 will incorporate a first half of Benji’s own material, with the second half entirely dedicated to the Hendrix material and set against a specially commissioned visual backdrop. The Hendrix songs will feature on a new album, due for national release on September 18, marking 45 years since Hendrix’s death.

THE ANDY WARRINGTON EXPERIENCE
They claim that their band will only play a limited number of gigs together so grab your opportunity to see The Andy Warrington Experience while you can. This seems a good way to persuade you to go and see this four-piece band consisting of Andy Warrington (vocals and guitar), Phil Cox (guitar), Rick Welsh (bass) and Argentinian Carlos Parlato on drums.
Open Tue/Wed 9am - 5.30pm ∙Thurs 11am - 8pm ∙Fri 9am - 6pm ∙Sat 9am - 4.30pm.

Having seen some of the members of the band perform elsewhere I think that any performance of The Experience will be exciting and they promise to bring to the gig ‘avant-garde alternative pop and rock classics with an edge’. With a set list including material from The Stones to Springsteen and David Bowie to Joy Division it’s worthwhile checking them out. The Andy Warrington Experience are appearing at The Bluebell Inn in Werrington Village on Friday September 25.
