sta é uma edição muito especial da revista YachtBrasil, na qual dedicamos boa parte de seu conteúdo ao tema da Sustentabilidade. Sua proposta é mostrar que o caminho do luxo e o de ações sustentáveis pode ser o mesmo. Mais do que um modismo, a sustentabilidade é a garantia de que as gerações futuras poderão viver em um planeta com recursos que garantirão sua sobrevivência e qualidade de vida. Escolhemos dez hotéis de luxo, em várias partes do mundo, nos quais atitudes para a preservação do meio ambiente já vêm sendo tomadas, e sem perder a sofisticação! Falando em sofisticação, apresentamos alguns arquitetos que realizam projetos inovadores, sem abrir mão do glamour... Nem da consciência ambiental! Os carros luxuosos são sempre os vilões no quesito emissão de gás carbônico na atmosfera. Mas esta realidade está sofrendo uma grande transformação. Trouxemos para você, leitor, quatro carros fantásticos que têm sim compromisso com o meio ambiente. Na seção Com a Palavra, uma entrevista com João Doria Jr., um dos empresários mais engajados em aliar os conceitos e as práticas

Hand in hand with sustainability This very special edition of the YachtBrasil magazine is largely dedicated to the theme of Sustainability. In this edition we aim to show that the path to luxury and to sustainability can be the very same one. Sustainability is more than a fashion. These past three months have seen a number of events. We participated in the Rio Boat Show, in great style; biggest stand, biggest boats at the event and the largest number of boats on display. We also promoted one of the nautical world’s most eagerly awaited events, the 5th edition of Expo Boats, a show dedicated to the semi-new market. This year at the Rio Boat Show, YachtBrasil was yet again brimming with innovations. As well as showing the most sought after boats on the international nautical scene, the company also launched a new tool used by the whole of the commercial team – the YachtBrasil application of iPad.
Com visual moderno, fácil navegação e muito interativo, este aplicativo permite ao usuário conhecer todos os barcos das linhas Azimut, Atlantis e Sea Ray em detalhes, ver muitas fotos, vídeos, plantas-baixas, catálogos, memoriais e, em breve, até fazer um tour virtual com fotos em 360 graus. Além de conhecer toda a linha de barcos novos, é possível encontrar também ofertas de seminovos e, quando salvo em “favoritos”, o usuário pode consultá-lo ou indicá-lo para um amigo.
With its modern look, easy navigation and high interactivity this application allows the user to see, in detail, all the boats of the Azimut, Atlantis and Sea Ray lines, with photos, videos, plans, catalogues, comments and soon it will be possible to do a virtual tour with 360 degree photos. As well as seeing the whole range of new boats it is possible to find offers for semi-new boats and when these are saved in ‘my favorites’ the user can consult or recommend these to a friend.

Um procedimento de construção que aumenta a solidez e reduz o peso total da embarcação, permitindo melhores rendimentos aos dois motores Caterpillar de 1.150 HP cada, além de reduzir o consumo e aumentar a autonomia. The hull and the structure were designed with the aim of achieving improved balance between traditional materials and innovative ones such as carbon fiber, a construction method that increases solidity and lowers the overall weight of the vessel, thus enhancing the performance of the two Caterpillar 1,150 hp motors, as well as reducing consumption and improving autonomy. The Flybridge can be enjoyed throughout the whole day, thanks to the possibility of a hard top which eliminates the usual noise caused by canvas awnings during cruising.

The master stateroom takes up the whole width of the beam, with double windows in vertical segments, two of which can be opened. The double bed lifts up to reveal large, practical storage space for luggage. The covering of the headboard and bedside tables represents the style of the whole vessel here in the master stateroom, working ergonomically and increasing the smooth rounded look. The cupboards, drawers and trunks provide storage for personal objects for greater comfort on board.

The VIP cabin in the stern has double panoramic windows. The reclining bed allows access to a large trunk. Lighting in all the rooms avoids direct illumination giving a softer, more diffused effect, produced by long, luminous shafts. The skylight is concealed by a sliding panel.

O resultado dessa inovação é a Atlantis 44, fundamental em seu conceito e em seu design, desenvolvida com ideias e soluções sem incertezas, livre de atitudes dogmáticas e determinada a dar uma interpretação atualizada do que é um barco open nos dias de hoje: um autêntico manifesto. Atlantis 44, um barco no qual a forma é aliada da substância, um projeto no qual o design exalta a funcionalidade.
The result is the Atlantis 44, essential in its concept and look which were developed without uncertainties in its ideas and solutions, free of dogmatic and determined attitudes to give an up-to-date interpretation of what an open boat is today – a genuine manifesto. Atlantis 44 is a boat in which form is allied with substance, a project where design hails functionality.
Um bom exemplo é dado pelo hardtop (teto rígido), um sinal distintivo do perfil, adicionando impulsividade à linha de barcos esportivos e total respeito à filosofia do projeto: aberto tanto na popa como nos lados, oferece conforto sem criar sensação de clausura com o exterior.
A good example of this is seen in the hardtop, a distinctive indication of its profile, adding impulsivity to the line of sporty boats with total respect for the philosophy of the project. It is open both at the stern and on the sides and is comfortable without creating a sense of separation from the outdoors.
A estrutura é sólida, porém com desenho suave: graças à nova geração de tetos, mais leves ― chamados de soft top, que garantem maior abertura e a mesma proteção ―, mas com muito menos peso. Além disso, a targa de fibra de vidro oferece segurança extra e dá suporte para a lona do toldo quando o teto está aberto.
It has a solid yet smooth structure, thanks to the new generation soft top which ensures greater openness with the same protection and much lower weight. In addition, the fiber glass rollbar provides extra safety and holds the canvas of the awning when the roof is open.
O molde de fibra que percorre todo o perímetro do teto oferece não apenas acabamento estético como também proteção para os sprays d’água durante a navegação.
The fiber mould that runs round the edge of the roof provides not only esthetic finishing but also protection from water spray during cruising.

The deck, on one single level provides three well-defined sunbathing areas, easy circulation, integration between the various key areas of the vessel, as well as wide, well-protected side passages. These are extremely important elements on an open boat according to Atlantis.

São exemplos dessa tecnologia que facilita o joystick, que faz da atracação um ato simples e intuitivo, o sistema Sky Hook, que torna possível manter a posição do barco automaticamente sem ter que manobrar manualmente (particularmente útil durante a espera para entrada na marina), e o sistema “vessel view” digital de supervisão, que oferece total monitoramento dos acontecimentos a bordo e completa a instrumentação de um posto de comando perfeitamente ergonômico.

O cockpit, em um único nível, possibilita maior convivência entre os convidados e aumenta a área social. Dinete para oito pessoas, cozinha externa completa, inclusive com grill, e dois solários para quatro pessoas na área de abertura do teto soft top com ótima ventilação são um convite ao convívio familiar e com amigos. Na proa, um solário para duas pessoas, com amplo passadiço lateral bem protegido por guarda-mancebos de aço inox, torna o banho de sol ainda mais agradável e seguro. The single level cockpit allows for greater interaction with guests and increases the social area. A dinette for eight people, a complete external galley, with grill and two solariums for four people in the open part of the soft top with optimum ventilation all invite you to interact with family and friends. There is a two-people solarium in the bow with a wide side passage which is well-protected with stainless steel grabrails, making sunbathing even more pleasant and safe. The panel with its ergonomic design and excellent visibility, even with the roof closed, has state-of-the-art technology for cruising, with optimum positioning and excellent reading.

Desenvolvido a partir do modelo Citation X, o novo Citation Ten já vem com winglets instalados de fábrica, o que permite uma grande evolução em termos de velocidade, alcance, razão de subida e economia de combustível. Além disso, com uma fuselagem maior, traz um interior mais amplo, redesenhado e equipado com os mais modernos equipamentos de comunicação e entretenimento.
The Citation Ten was developed based on the Citation X model. It has factory-installed elliptical winglets which mean greater performance in terms of speed, range, rate of climb and fuel efficiency. In addition, the larger fuselage means a more spacious interior which has been re-designed and equipped with stateof-the-art communications and entertainment equipment.
O novo Citation Ten será capaz de decolar com mais carga que o Citation X e voar sem reabastecimento por uma distância maior em relação ao modelo anterior. Equipado com duas turbinas da nova geração da Rolls-Royce, a aeronave prevê uma razão de subida nitidamente superior, voando diretamente para 45 mil pés em apenas 23 minutos, contra os 28 minutos que o Citation X leva para alcançar os 43 mil pés. Sua velocidade máxima de cruzeiro é a grande surpresa que a Cessna reserva para o mercado no momento da certificação, mas será maior que os 973 km/h do Citation X (mais veloz jato civil em operação no mundo).
The new Citation Ten will be able to take off with a greater payload than the Citation X and to fly, without refueling, for a greater range in comparison with the previous model. It is equipped with two latest generation Rolls-Royce turbines and is expected to demonstrate a significantly greater climb rate, reaching 45 thousand feet in only 23 minutes, compared to the Citation X which takes 28 minutes to reach 43 thousand feet. Its maximum cruising speed is a big secret which Cessna is withholding from the market until the time of certification, but it will be higher than the Citation X’s 973 km/h (the fastest civilian jet in operation in the world).

Faster and economic Despite this boost in performance the Citation Ten still promises greater fuel efficiency. In a hypothetical flight of 4,630 km, at an altitude of 47 thousand feet, the new Citation Ten consumes 9,379 pounds of fuel, 145 pounds less than the Citation X and it even arrives two minutes earlier on a journey of 5 hours and ten minutes.
Mesmo com todo esse upgrade no desempenho, o Citation Ten promete mais economia de combustível. Num hipotético voo comparativo de 4.630 km, a 47 mil pés de altitude, o novo Citation Ten consome 9.379 libras de combustível, 145 libras a menos do que o Citation X, e ainda chega dois minutos antes numa viagem de 5 horas e 10 minutos.

Outro destaque da nova aeronave é o seu conforto interno. Com uma fuselagem 39 cm mais comprida, o Citation Ten possui uma cabine maior, com mais espaço para as pernas e poltronas redesenhadas com maior capacidade de reclinação. Além disso, cada um dos oito assentos vem equipado com painel de controle baseado numa tela sensível ao toque e totalmente integrado ao design da cabine (quando não está em uso, permanece invisível). Interligado por fibra ótica, o sistema permite que cada passageiro regule a iluminação, a temperatura interna, as cortinas das janelas e tenha acesso a central de entretenimento com internet, visualização do mapa de voo, filmes em Blue Ray, música e até envio de mensagens de texto.
Interior design Another outstanding feature on this new aircraft is its interior comfort. The fuselage is 39 cms longer allowing for a larger cabin with more leg room. In addition seats have been redesigned to recline more. Moreover each of its eight seats comes equipped with a touchscreen control panel which is totally integrated with the design of the cabin (when this is not in use it is stowed out of sight). This system, which is interlinked by fiber optics, allows each passenger to control lighting, the interior temperature, blinds and to have access to the entertainment center - with internet, view of the flight map, films in Blue Ray, music and it is even possible to send text messages.

Para os pilotos, a evolução também é visível. O novo Citation Ten traz um painel de instrumentos totalmente remodelado, novos pedestais e novas colunas do manche. Além disso, vem com o que há de mais moderno em termos de equipamentos de aviônica no mundo – o Garmin G5000, com três telas LCD de 14 polegadas, quatro painéis de controle touch-screen e diversos controles integrados, com redução de botões e interruptores na cabine de comando. Além disso, o auto-throttle será equipamento de série no Citation Ten.
Advances are even more evident to the pilots. The instrument panel has been totally re-modelled on the Citation Ten. There are new joystick pedestals and columns. It also comes with state-of-the-art avionics equipment – the Garmin G5000, with three 14-inch LCD screens, four touchscreen control panels and a number of integrated controls and a reduction in buttons and switches on the flight deck. In addition, autothrottle will be standard equipment on the Citation Ten.

This prize was awarded to the company for its efforts in improving and preserving air quality in the four-county metro area and for incorporating sustainability measures in company operations. “It was very satisfying to have our efforts recognized during this important summit,” said Dan Rogers, manager of Environmental Resources. “The entire Cessna community has embraced these initiatives and we are well on the way to our company goal of a 20% reduction in greenhouse gases, energy and waste, by 2015.”

Tarefa nada fácil quando falamos de carros de luxo. Sustainability on four wheels Car assemblers today are faced with the considerable challenge of producing impeccably designed, high-performance cars with lower CO² emission. No mean feat in the case of luxury cars. However, with the technology of the hybrid cars which combine the combustion engine (gasoline or diesel) with

an electric motor, it is possible to considerably reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emission. In the future, the solution will be to manufacture only electric cars and those using other alternative fuels with zero CO² emission. Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro The new Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro, scheduled for launch on the market at the end of the year, is Audi’s first hybrid car to be manufactured on a large scale. The vehicle uses two drive systems: a gasoline engine (2.0 TFSI, turbocharged and with fuel injection) and an electric motor. These provide 245 hp of power and 480 Nm of torque. This model also uses a Tiptronic 8-speed gear change with torque converter and integrated Quattro traction motor. This is one of the best systems in the world.

A combinação do motor V6 a gasolina com um motor elétrico compacto torna este sedã de luxo o mais econômico do mundo com motor de ciclo Otto. O consumo médio de combustível é somente de 7,9 litros a cada 100 quilômetros. Isso possibilita as menores emissões de CO2 do mundo nessa categoria de automóvel e de desempenho: somente 188 g/km. O propulsor V6 a gasolina gera uma potência total de 299 cv, sendo 279 cv do motor de combustão e 20 cv do motor elétrico adicional. Mercedes-Benz S 400 Hybrid The S400 Hybrid is a pioneer in the hybrid traction system on the Brazilian market. The S400 Hybrid stands out in this category as having the lowest CO2 emissions of all. The combination of the V6 gasoline engine with a compact electric motor makes this luxury sedan the most economic in the world with an Otto cycle motor. The average fuel consumption is only 7.9 liters for each 100 km. This allows for the lowest CO2 emissions in the world in this category of car and of performance: only 188 g/km. The V6 gasoline engine generates total power of 299 hp - 279 hp of combustion engine and 20 hp of additional electric motor. The automatic 7G-TRONIC transmission with seven gears has a specific configuration for the hybrid module, so that this sedan accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 250 km/h, electronically limited. The hybrid module also has a start/stop function which turns off the engine when the vehicle is stopped or driving at less than 15 km/h, for example at traffic lights. When it is time to move again the electric motor restarts the main power module, almost undetected. This contributes to fuel saving and protection of the environment.

This vehicle was conceived as having an emissions level of only 70 g/km of CO2, as well as fuel consumption of only 33.3 km/l – truly exceptional, even for an ultra-compact city car. Moreover, the 918 Spyder is designed to provide the performance of a super sports car: acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in a little under 3.2 seconds and a maximum speed of 320 km/h. A button on the steering wheel allows the driver to choose between four different modes of driving. The E-Drive uses only electric energy to drive the car and covers up to 25 km. In the hybrid mode, the 918 Spyder uses both the electric motor and the combustion engine, depending on conditions and driving demands, thus providing both maximum fuelsaving and high potency. The Sport Hybrid mode uses both the driving systems, but the focus is on performance.

Fisker Karma The North American assembler, Fisker, is already producing the Karma in Finland. This is the new sporty electric model, which is capable of 80 km of driving using only electricity before the gasoline engine is activated. In total, the Karma produces 403 hp of power, a combination of the 260 hp of the 2.0 turbocharged gasoline engine and the electric motor, fed by a lithium-ion battery. The sedan also has braking with an energy regeneration system.

Todos os anos, a YachtBrasil procura surpreender seus amigos, parceiros e visitantes com um estande diferenciado. Este ano, não apenas o estande, projetado pelo espaço AD, chamou a atenção, mas também a quantidade de barcos expostos. Nos 700 m² de área seca e 150 m² de área molhada, estavam expostos 19 barcos, entre eles os dois maiores do evento – Leonardo 100 e 103S – que reúnem os mais altos luxo, sofisticação, tecnologia e design do mercado. Esta enorme área foi dividia em dois elegantes estandes: um para as embarcações do estaleiro italiano Azimut-Benetti e outro para os barcos do estaleiro americano Sea Ray, as duas marcas que possuem representação exclusiva da YachtBrasil no país.

A SHOW OF BOATS! YachtBrasil surpassed all expectations at the Rio Boat Show this year. It had two stands and 19 boats on show, two of which were the biggest at the show. Every year YachtBrasil tries to surprise its friends, partners and visitors with an exceptional stand. This year not only the stand, designed by Espaço AD, caught people’s attention, but also the number of boats on display. In the 700 m² of dry area and the 150 m² of wet area there were 19 boats on display, among them the two biggest ones of the event - the Leonardo 100 and the 103S – bringing together the most luxurious in sophistication, technology and design on the market. This enormous area was divided into two elegant stands. One for boats from the Italian shipyard and the other for boats from the American shipyard Sea Ray – the two brands with YachtBrasil as their exclusive dealer in the country.

Divas nacionais – Um dos destaques deste ano foi a presença dos primeiros modelos do grupo italiano Azimut-Benetti produzidos no Brasil. Os modelos Azimut 43 e Azimut 58, fabricados na recém-inaugurada fábrica em Itajaí (SC), oferecem ao cliente padrões internacionais e garantem os mesmos design arrojado, alta performance e requinte no acabamento característicos da marca. Um charmoso coquetel marcou o lançamento destas embarcações no Brasil e contou com a presença de Paolo Vitelli, presidente do grupo Azimut-Benetti, e de vários diretores do grupo italiano. Luca Morando, CEO da Azimut do Brasil, também esteve presente no evento. Azimut 43 – Com design inovador e elegante, esta embarcação possui uma proa com exclusivo formato em trapézio que facilita as operações de ancoragem e proporciona um espaço perfeito para banhos de sol. No interior, graças às amplas janelas, a luminosidade é intensa. As duas suítes são espaçosas, com destaque para a suíte de proa, com vista privilegiada para o mar. Esta embarcação também possui bow thruster (opcional) para operações de atracação, que permite ao barco se mover lateralmente, tornando as manobras mais práticas e seguras. O modelo brasileiro inclui churrasqueira, pia e lixeira na popa, plataforma submergível, portas de embarque no costado (bombordo e boreste) e janelas laterais verticais. A Azimut 58 tem como diferencial o design interno, desenvolvido por Carlo Galeazzi, com móveis em linhas retas que proporcionam mais espaço e conforto. A plataforma de popa é submergível e o hardtop opcional. Possui três amplos camarotes, com o de meia-nau ocupando toda a boca (largura) do barco. Na versão produzida no Brasil, a embarcação possui porta de acesso para a cabine de marinheiro pela popa e também churrasqueira, pia e lixeira na praça de popa. National divas – One of the highlights of this year was the presence of the first models from the Italian group Azimut-Benetti produced in Brazil. The models Azimut 43 and Azimut 58, manufactured at the recently opened factory in Itajaí (SC), offer the client international standards and ensure the same outstanding design, high performance and the stylish finishing which are the hallmark of the brand. An elegant cocktail party marked the launch of these boats in Brazil and was attended by Paolo Vitelli, President of the AzimutBenetti group as well as a number of Directors from the Italian group. Azimut 43 – With its innovative, elegant design this boat has an exclusive square-shaped bow which makes anchoring operations easier and provides a perfect space for sunbathing. Large windows make the light of the interior intense. The two suites are spacious. The bow suite is outstanding with a spectacular view of the sea. This boat also has bow thruster (optional) for mooring operations. This means the boat is able to move sideways which makes maneuvering practical and safe. The Brazilian model includes a barbecue, sink and trashcan in the stern, as well as a submergible platform, boarding doors at the sides (port and starboard) and vertical lateral windows. The Azimut 58 - the feature on this boat that sets it apart is the interior design, by Carlo Galeazzi, with furniture in straight lines, providing more space and comfort. The stern platform is submergible and the hardtop is optional. It has three spacious cabins and the one midship takes up the whole beam of the boat. On the version manufactured in Brazil, the boat has a door to the sailor’s cabin via the stern, as well as a barbecue, sink and trashcan on the stern deck.

Azimut Leonardo 100 – This 30-meter (100 ft) boat is very welldistributed and sleeps eight people comfortably. Innovation, courage and creativity are definitions that bring to mind the great artist and visionary Leonardo da Vinci. The flybridge has an open-air dining room, comfortable sofas and a Jacuzzi. The modern concept in architecture uses sophisticated materials, has dynamic lines and allows natural light to flow freely throughout the interior. On the lower deck the master stateroom is fullyequipped, with a mini-lounge for relaxing and a spacious closet. There is also a VIP suite and another two cabins for guests.

AZIMUT 103S – Na 103S, além de um espaçoso flybridge, o atraente deste projeto é a integração entre o salão principal e a praça de popa, unidos por um único piso. O design externo é inovador e chama muito a atenção. A impressionante velocidade de 34 nós atingida por esta embarcação de 105 toneladas é promovida por dois motores MTU de 2.434 HP. A embarcação conta também com acesso alternativo da tripulação para a sua cabine e para o posto de comando, duas cozinhas, teto no salão principal de cristal fumê, que se abre com acionamento elétrico. The external design is innovative and striking. The impressive speed of 34 knots reached by this 105-ton boat is down to the two MTU motors of 2,434 hp each. The boat also has alternative access for crew to reach their cabin and the helm, two galleys, a smoked crystal glass roof in the main saloon that opens electrically. It has four large, beautiful cabins, allowing overnight accommodation for eight people.

ntre os dias 27 e 29 de maio, um fim de semana com muito sol, o Furnaspark Airport Facility & Resort, localizado em Formiga, Minas Gerais, sediou o evento Fly Inn Cirrus Furnaspark, trazendo uma grande confraternização entre amigos e parceiros da Cirrus Aircraft para a região de Furnas. Mais de trinta aeronaves estiveram no pátio da pista de pouso do Resort, onde a Cirrus apresentou também o novo modelo do SR 22 Turbo 2011, com voos de demonstração para os interessados. Muitos empresários e potenciais compradores mineiros e de outras regiões comprovaram a performance e o conforto da aeronave. O evento contou com o apoio de várias empresas de segmentos diferentes. A YachtBrasil levou a Sea Ray 350, um barco que oferece todo conforto e segurança para se passar um fim de semana a bordo com a família. Para aqueles que fizeram um test drive na embarcação, ficou claro por que a marca é uma das mais consagradas no mercado internacional. uring the sunny weeked of 27 to 29 May the Furnaspark Airport Facility & Resort, in Formiga, Minas Gerais, held the event, Fly Inn Cirrus Furnaspark, bringing interaction between friends and partners of Cirrus Aircraft to the Furnas region. There were over thirty aircraft on the forecourt of the Resort’s runway where Cirrus also presented the new model of the SR 22 Turbo 2011, with demonstration flights for interested parties. A number of business people and potential buyers from Minas and other regions witnessed the performance and comfort of the aircraft. The event was supported by several companies from different segments. YachtBrasil took the Sea Ray 350, a boat that provides all the comfort and safety needed for a weekend on board with the family. For those who test drove the boat it was clear that the brand is one of the best in the international market. On the ground, MINI and BMW from Euroville, Belo Horizonte, offered test drives of the 5 GT series among other recent updates of several models by the two makes. O Negra, veleiro de tripulação uruguaia e bandeira argentina, campeão de 2010 da Mitsubishi Sailing Cup, confirmou o favoritismo e venceu a primeira etapa da segunda temporada da competição, no começo de junho, em Ilhabela, no litoral norte de São Paulo. O segundo colocado na classificação geral da classe S40, a principal do evento, foi o barco Crioula, do Rio Grande do Sul, comandado por Samuel Albrecht. Em terceiro lugar ficou o chileno Pisco Sour, de Bernardo Matte. A Mitsubishi Sailing Cup está se firmando como a principal disputa da vela de oceano sul-americana graças ao excelente nível técnico dos velejadores, ao conceito de competição em veleiro monotipo, ou seja, com embarcações rigorosamente iguais e sem regras de handicap ou rating, e às características singulares da S40, uma classe de barcos oceânicos de última geração que reúne a um só tempo velocidade, modernidade e desafio técnico para os velejadores. Tudo isso garante o alto padrão das regatas e a adrenalina máxima até o final.

Negra comes out in front at the Mitsubishi Sailing Cup 2011 The Negra, a sailing boat with a Uruguayan crew and an Argentinian flag, winner of the 2010 Mitsubishi Sailing Cup, fulfilled expectations and won the first phase of the second season of the competition, at the beginning of June in Ilhabela, on the north coast of São Paulo. Second place in the general classification for the S40 class, the main one of the event, was the boat Crioula, from Rio Grande do Sul, captained by Samuel Albrecht. Bernardo Matte’s Pisco Sour from Chile took third place. The Mitsubishi Sailing Cup is establishing itself as the main competitor for the South American Vela de Oceano, thanks to the excellent technical level of the sailors, to the concept of competition in monotype sailing boats, in other words, with strictly equal boats, without handicap rules or rating and to the singular characteristics of the S40, a class of stateof-the-art ocean boats which combine speed, modernity and technical challenge for the sailors. All this, ensures high standards at regattas and maximum adrenalin until the end.

Participaram das regatas 14 barcos do Brasil, Argentina, Uruguai e Chile. Entre os competidores estavam medalhistas olímpicos como Torben Grael, Eduardo Penido e Javier Conte (Argentina), além de velejadores que também participaram de jogos olímpicos e têm na prateleira medalhas e títulos nas mais importantes competições mundiais, como Francesco Bruni, da Itália, Guilhermo e Mariano “Cole” Parada, da Argentina, Gastão e Vince Brun, Roberto Martins, Samuel Albrecht e Eduardo Souza Ramos, do Brasil. HPE25 – Além da classe S40, a Mitsubishi Sailing Cup teve também disputas no monotipo HPE25. O vencedor da etapa de Ilhabela foi o Match Point, de Hugo del Piore, que fechou o torneio na primeira colocação com mais de 20 pontos à frente do segundo colocado, o barco Ginga, de Breno Chvacier. O Avantto 1, sob o comando de Dario Galvão, fechou o pódio da categoria.

The sailor and businessman Eduardo de Souza Ramos, who had the idea for the competitive classes of this tournament, did not hide his satisfaction with the success of the competition. “It is very gratifying to see an old desire of mine fulfilled. Mais uma vez a Expo Boats superou as expectativas e foi um grande sucesso. O evento aconteceu, simultaneamente, em três estados brasileiros: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Santa Catarina.
Once again Expo Boats surpassed expectations and was a great success. The event happened simultaneously in three Brazilian states: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Santa Catarina.
Estavam expostos barcos de diferentes tamanhos, modelos e marcas, todos com qualidade e procedência garantidas pela YachtBrasil. Além disso, era também possível conferir mais de 450 opções de embarcações disponíveis no site da empresa.
There was a variety of sizes, models and makes of boats on show, all of which carry the YachtBrasil guarantee of quality and origin. In addition more than 450 boats were available for consultation on the company’s site.
Este ano, no Rio de Janeiro, pela primeira vez, a feira foi realizada em três diferentes pontos de Angra dos Reis, onde os barcos estiveram expostos: na Riomarina, marina exclusiva da YachtBrasil, na marina do Condomínio Porto Frade e na marina Verolme.
This year, in Rio de Janeiro, for the first time, the show was on in three different places in Angra dos Reis. Boats were on display at: the Riomarina, YachtBrasil’s exclusive marina; at the marina of the Porto Frade condo and at the Verolme marina.
O bom tempo atraiu um público amante da náutica que, além de aproveitar os dias de sol no mar, também deu uma passadinha para conferir as grandes oportunidades oferecidas pela YachtBrasil e pôde conferir, entre outros barcos, a Azimut 47, a Sea Ray 350 e a 370, a Atlantis 40. Na sexta-feira, dia 24, um coquetel e muitos tests drives deram um brilho especial ao evento.
The good weather attracted the boat-loving public who, as well as enjoying the sunny days in the sea, also popped by to check out the great opportunities offered by YachtBrasil. Amongst others, they saw the Azimut 47, Sea Ray 350 and 370, Atlantis 40. On Friday 24, a cocktail party and lots of test drives brought an added glitter to the event.

Em São Paulo, a feira aconteceu no Iate Clube de Santos e teve um número bastante expressivo de visitantes. Com mais de 20 barcos expostos, entre 26 e 76 pés, e dias maravilhosos como cenário, a Expo Boat no Guarujá garantiu excelentes resultados de vendas. In São Paulo the event was held at the Santos Yacht Club and there was a very good turnout. There were more than 20 boats on show at the Expo Boat in Guarujá. These were between 26 and 76 feet. Sales were excellent and so was the weather.

Na Tedesco Marina, em Camboriú, Santa Catarina, nem mesmo as nuvens conseguiram espantar o ânimo dos visitantes. Com mais de 20 barcos na água, de 22 a 76 pés, o evento contou com a presença de um público interessado em adquirir seu primeiro barco ou simplesmente trocar de embarcação. What is the importance of the private sector in socioenvironmental issues? How can this sector be made aware? Both the private and the public sectors impact directly on the environment. Lide, with its network of contacts, to which it has added over these past seven years, faces the challenge of informing and presenting successful practices and mechanisms in sustainable development with the aim of encouraging other companies in the group. Demonstrating economic and environmental value, as well as creating political and business commitment to sustainable development in the companies in relation to the planet is a way of making this sector aware. Another example we transmit to the companies that participate in Lide is the fact that we neutralize the carbon emissions of our events by buying carbon credits through certified Brazilian projects.

How are sustainable initiatives implemented in the companies? Does Lide provide guidance on the practical process of becoming sustainable? We encourage exchange of experiences and the practice of successful initiatives so they can implement these in their own companies. It is important to make the sense of sustainability less technical and bring it closer to corporate understanding with practical results.

Lide Sustentabilidade, the environmental branch of Lide that promotes understanding and the importance of preservation of the environment together with Brazilian society, made it possible for the National Congress to approve the law on solid waste that had been embargoed for almost 20 years. This initiative had the total support of the group’s business people.
Qual a avaliação que o senhor faz do que já foi conquistado até agora com as atividades do Lide? É perceptível este processo de reflexão e ação por parte do empresariado?
What evaluation would you make of achievements so far in terms of Lide activities? Is it possible to perceive this process of reflection and action on the part of the business community? Our objective is to take the best information to the business community and to promote debate, with the support of Lide’s business strength, through events and seminars with political figures, specialists and academics in the sector. They provide clarification and offer means for qualified, efficient planning for environmental preservation.
O nosso objetivo é levar a melhor informação ao empresário e promover debates, com o apoio da força empresarial do Lide, por meio de eventos e seminários temáticos com autoridades políticas, especialistas do setor e estudiosos, que esclareçam e forneçam subsídios para um planejamento qualificado e eficiente de preservação ambiental. Acredito que muitas vezes algumas ideias propostas nos encontros vão de encontro com os interesses dos empresários. Como lidar com estas situações?
O ambiente dos debates é um espaço democrático. Várias propostas são apresentadas e também debatidas. Cabe ao empresariado identificar a que mais condiz com a realidade de sua empresa. Talvez a questão não seja sanada ainda durante a realização do evento, mas uma semente sempre é plantada com chance de render bons frutos. Para que haja a adoção de iniciativas sustentáveis, é preciso que novas leis sejam discutidas ou serão os próprios mercados que definirão a necessidade destas iniciativas?
Nossos encontros sempre envolvem representantes de várias esferas da sociedade, tais como os segmentos político, empresarial ou científico. A união dos esforços torna a abrangência das discussões muito mais ampla e o benefício não se limitará a apenas um setor participante.
I believe that often some of the ideas proposed at meetings are in the business people’s own best interests. How can this situation be dealt with? The spirit of the debates is to provide a democratic arena. A number of proposals are presented and are also debated. It is up to the business people to identify what is most conducive with the reality of their companies. Perhaps the issue will not be resolved during the event, but a seed is always planted with the chance to bear good fruits. For sustainable initiatives to be adopted do new laws need to be discussed or will the markets themselves define the needs of these initiatives? Our meetings always involve representatives from different spheres of society, such as the political, business and scientific segments. This joint effort makes discussions much wider and benefits are not limited to just one of the sectors involve.

Cada setor tem a sua peculiaridade. Não existe região ou setor com maior ou menor dificuldade, mas sim empresários e políticos mais ou menos engajados. A ideia de que a sustentabilidade custa mais caro está sendo aos poucos abolida?
O que vemos é que a conscientização está sendo ampliada a passos largos. Só o fato de pararmos para debater o assunto já se pode considerar um avanço significativo dentro da nossa sociedade. O que seria para o senhor um mundo ideal?
Um mundo ideal é o que buscamos por meio de nossas atividades no Lide. O grupo já nasceu com a preocupação de sensibilizar o empresariado brasileiro para a importância de seu papel na construção de uma sociedade ética, desenvolvida e consciente. Contemporary society is based on consumerism. How can this pattern be changed without creating a conflict of interests with business? Each time we meet we are creating a political and business commitment with the sustainable development of the planet. Everyone participates, fairly, in understanding the topic being presented and this is not seen as conflicting with one’s own area of activity. Another factor to be taken into consideration is consumer awareness. Consumers are becoming more and more demanding. Society is demanding changes in standards and it is up to the competent business person to capitalize on these signs in maintaining and developing business. Is it more difficult to apply sustainable criteria in regions where timber and agriculture are the principal economic activity? Each sector has its own issues. There is no region or sector which faces more or less difficulty, but there are indeed business people and politicians who are more or less on board. Is the idea that sustainability is expensive gradually disappearing? What we notice is that awareness is growing in leaps and bounds. Just the fact that we are taking the time to debate this topic can already be seen as a significant step forward for society. What would be an ideal world for you? We are seeking an ideal world through our activities at Lide. The group arose from a concern to make the Brazilian business community sensitive to the importance of its role in building an ethical, developed, aware society. Quando mudou para os Estados Unidos, no início da década de 80, o publicitário paulistano Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz, hoje conhecido como Vik Muniz, jamais poderia imaginar que se tornaria um dos maiores artistas plásticos contemporâneos. Anos difíceis passaram-se até que Muniz começou a fazer algumas esculturas que lhe permitiram fazer parte, mesmo que timidamente, do circuito de arte nova-iorquino. A fotografia foi incorporada ao seu trabalho e o objeto final de sua arte passou a ser a obra fotografada. O sucesso veio em 1990 e desde então as obras do artista, com traços de bom humor, sagacidade e muito talento, podem ser encontradas nos principais museus do mundo.

When he moved to the USA at the beginning of the 1980s, the publicist from Sao Paulo, Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz, known today as Vik Muniz, never imagined he would become one of the biggest contemporary artists. Muniz had some difficult years before he began to produce sculptures that allowed him to take part, although timidly, in the New York art circuit. Photography was incorporated into his work and the final object of his art has become photographed works. Success came in 1990 and since then the artist’s work, with traces of good humor, shrewdness and considerable talent, can be found in the world’s principal museums.

Most unusual about his work is his use of unexpected materials, such as earth, hair, sugar, chocolate, trash, spices and others. In the hands of the artist, a handful of sugar can be transformed into a child with fascinating expressions. The Mona Lisa gives her unmistakable smile in peanut butter and jelly. His ability to transform these elements into works of art is what makes Muniz one of the most respected artists on the international scene.

Um de seus trabalhos mais envolventes é a série Imagens da Sucata. O cenário deste trabalho foi um dos maiores aterros sanitários da América Latina, o Jardim Gramacho, na periferia do Rio de Janeiro. Os personagens, um grupo de catadores locais. Para a criação, Muniz inspirou-se em obras de grandes pintores clássicos, como Jacques Louis-David e Jean François Millet, e fotografou alguns desses trabalhadores de Gramacho. Depois, colocou as imagens ampliadas em um galpão onde preencheu com material proveniente do aterro. Fotografou novamente a composição e o resultado são imagens surpreendentes, impactantes e ao mesmo tempo poéticas. 126 | YACHTBRASIL
One of his most captivating pieces of work is the series ‘Imagens da Sucata’ (Images in Scrap). The backdrop to this work was one of the biggest landfills in Latin America, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The models, a group of local trash pickers. Muniz gained creative inspiration from the works of great classics painters such as Jacques Louis-David and Jean François Millet, photographed some of the workers at Gramacho. Afterwards, he set the enlarged images out in a warehouse where they were filled in with material from the landfill. He photographed the images again and the results are surprising and striking as well as poetic.

Este trabalho foi tema do documentário Lixo Extraordinário, que concorreu ao Oscar deste ano na categoria Melhor Documentário e, além de mostrar o processo de criação das obras, expôs também a relação do artista com os trabalhadores envolvidos.
This work was the theme of a documentary “Lixo Extraordinário” (Waste Land), which ran for Oscar in the category of best documentary. As well as showing the creative process of these works of art it also shows the relationship between the artist and the workers involved.
Uma das obras que tem como personagem o presidente da associação de catadores do local e faz uma releitura da obra Morte de Marat, de Jacques-Louis David, foi vendida por mais de R$ 100 mil em um leilão em Londres. Este valor foi revertido para a Associação dos Catadores do Aterro Sanitário de Jardim Gramacho.
One of the works of art, the model for which was the President of the association of the pickers at the site which depicts a recreation of the painting ‘La Mort de Marat’ by Jacques-Louis David, was sold for over R$ 100 thousand at an auction in London. This money was ploughed back into the association.
O resultado tanto da obra de Muniz quanto do documentário é, sem dúvida, uma reflexão sobre a vida, as experiências e os sonhos das pessoas que vivem no limiar da sociedade.

Com uma planta e uso de materiais que se aproximam da arquitetura tradicional, mas com elementos que a tornam sustentável pelo baixo consumo de energia, Studio MK27 criou a Casa da Bahia. Em vez de tecnologia avançada, o projeto tornou-se sustentável com base no uso de conhecimentos populares antigos. A casa, como o nome diz, foi toda planejada de acordo com as características do local onde está, no caso a Bahia. As antigas construções baianas têm telhas de barro, feitas de forma rústica com forro de madeira. As aberturas e vedações têm grandes painéis que deixam o vento passar e filtram a luz do sol. Até o sentido do vento é levado em consideração no momento da concepção do projeto. A Casa da Bahia de Kogan utiliza todos esses elementos tradicionais e o resultado é uma residência agradável, onde o interior oferece um ambiente fresco e arejado, um refúgio em relação ao ambiente externo, sempre quente. E o melhor deste projeto é ver tudo concretizado, de acordo com parâmetros sustentáveis e sem nenhum grande estudo, software avançado ou altos investimentos em tecnologia... tudo puramente baseado na sabedoria tradicional. Studio MK27 created the Casa da Bahia with plans that use materials which are similar to traditional architecture but with elements that make it sustainable for their low energy consumption. Instead of high technology the project’s sustainability is due to its use of popular old-fashioned knowledge. The house, as the name suggests, was planned according to the characteristics of its location, in this case Bahia. Old Bahian houses have clay tiles made by hand with wood cladding. Openings and beading form large panels that allow wind ventilation and filter sunlight. Even the direction of the wind is taken into consideration when the project is being conceived. Kogan’s Casa da Bahia uses all these traditional elements and the result is a pleasant house, with a fresh, airy atmosphere inside, a refuge from the external environment which is always hot. The best feature of this project is seeing it all materialize in line with sustainable parameters and without any extensive research, advanced software or high investment in technology... O mineiro do escritório Pedro Lázaro de Arquitetura criou para o evento Casa Cor um “espaço reciclável”. Por trás do resultado, uma pergunta: se reciclamos garrafas PET e papel, por que não reciclar também o material utilizado na construção de moradias? Para viabilizar o formato, foram utilizados elementos peculiares. Entre suas características estão: estrutura de pilares e vigas de alumínio utilizadas normalmente em shows e grandes eventos; fechamentos e piso interno de peças de madeira resultante de demolição de espaços antigos... O tratamento das peças foi feito com verniz à base de água, o piso dos decks foi totalmente revestido com material reciclável e, no revestimento das áreas externas, foi usado material feito a partir da reciclagem de pneus desgastados. O espaço interno também ganhou soluções inovadoras com lâmpadas de baixo consumo, mobiliário de madeira de florestas com manejo sustentável, tecidos orgânicos ou reaproveitados de tecidos antigos comprados em brechós franceses para adornar almofadas e colchas... Enfim, todo o espaço foi montado visando ao baixo impacto ambiental. E o resultado, como visto nas imagens, não deixa a desejar a qualquer construção “tradicional”. From the office Pedro Lázaro de Arquitetura this mineiro created a recyclable space for the Casa Cor event. Behind the finished product there was a question: if we recycle PET bottles and paper why not recycle material used in building homes? Unusual elements were used to make this format work. Characteristics included: aluminum pillars and posts, usually used in concerts and big events; boxing and internal flooring made from wood originated from the demolition of old buildings Items were treated with water-based varnish, the flooring of the decks was totally covered in recyclable material and cladding of the external areas used material made by recycling bald tires. Innovative solutions were also employed in the internal space with low-consumption light bulbs, furniture made from wood from sustainably managed forests, organic textiles or reused old fabrics bought in French second-hand shops to decorate cushions and throws... In fact the whole space was put together with low environmental impact in mind and the result, as seen in the pictures, tears strips off any ‘traditional’ construction.

Pois saiba que é possível, e sem perder o luxo. O escritório fica em Florianópolis, capital catarinense, próximo ao porto de Itajaí, local que inspirou a inusitada transformação dos contêineres (cujo descarte é considerado um problema ambiental na região) em casas. E são para todos os gostos. A mais ousada tem 200 m² e uma estrutura mista de contêineres, concreto e perfis de madeira laminada colada. Concebida para três pessoas, conta com suíte completa, espaço para miniacademia, sala e cozinha conjugadas, dois dormitórios, lavanderia, garagem, oficina e terraços-jardim. É pouco ou quer mais?
This architect from the Fábrica Habitat, among other more ‘conventional’ projects is dedicated to a completely untraditional idea – ‘Sea Container’ houses. You may be thinking – “Me? Live in a container?” but it is, in fact, possible, without losing the luxury element. The office is in Florianópolis, the capital of Santa Catarina, near the port of Itajaí. And this location was the inspiration for the groundbreaking transformation of containers into homes (disposal of which is considered to be an environmental problem in the region). These homes suit all different tastes. The most surprising is 200 m² and is a structure combining containers, concrete and wood laminate. It was designed by three people. It has a complete en-suite bedroom, space for a mini-gym, combined lounge and kitchen, two bedrooms, a utility room, a garage, a workshop and a terrace garden. Who could ask for more.

Esse é um dos selos mais cobiçados no Brasil e, apesar de ter origem norte-americana, foi adaptado às necessidades brasileiras. Já são mais de 200 construções espalhadas pelo país certificadas ou em processo de certificação.
One of the most important certificates is ‘Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’ (LEED) awarded by the NGO, Green Building Council (GBC). This is one of the most sought after seals in Brazil and, although it originated in North America it has been adapted to Brazilian needs. O gosto e o talento para a música vêm de família: seus pais se conheceram “tocando e cantando violão” e no aniversário de oito anos da filha o presente não foi uma boneca, mas um violão. “Minha avó tocava piano e acordeom muito bem, as reuniões de família sempre foram regadas à música em rodas na varanda.” É assim que Verônica Ferriani, uma das mais recentes revelações da música brasileira, explica o que a motivou a embarcar no mundo da música. Mas por muitos anos o carinho e a dedicação que sentia pelo canto e pela melodia ficaram guardados no cantinho do lazer, do passatempo. Formou-se em Arquitetura, seguindo o caminho “mais natural”, como ela mesma explica: “Meu pai é médico, minha mãe professora de inglês, meu modelo era ter uma profissão mais formal e cantar como hobby.” Porém, mesmo na escolha da formalidade, ela garante que não se distanciou da música. “A faculdade de Arquitetura tradicionalmente recebe artistas diversos que ainda não decidiram um caminho específico. De minha turma saíram também muitos artistas plásticos, fotógrafos, até estilistas. Arquitetura e música têm muito em comum.”
She inherited her liking and talent for music from her family. Her parents met “singing and playing guitar” and for her eighth birthday instead of a doll they gave their daughter a guitar. “My grandmother played piano and accordion very well and family get-togethers were always accompanied by music on the verandah.” This is how Verônica Ferriani, one of the newest arrivals on the Brazilian music scene explains why she entered the world of music. But for many years the warmth and dedication she felt for singing and for music were just for pleasure, a pastime. She graduated in Architecture following the usual path as she herself explained: “My father is a doctor and my mother is an English Teacher so my role model was a more formal profession with singing as a hobby.” However, even within her option to conform she did not lose contact with music. “Architectural college has a tradition of attracting artists from a number of areas who have not decided on a specific path yet. My year produced fine artists, photographers and fashion designers. Architecture and music have a lot in common.”
Ao fim da faculdade, o rumo da carreira começou a mudar. Ela, que sempre tinha praticado música, começou a estudá-la. Foi então que sentiu um clique: “Vislumbrei uma possibilidade real de mudar de carreira e a partir daí ela aconteceu naturalmente.”
After she graduated, her career started to change. She had always played music and now she started to study it. This was when she felt things clicked. “I had a glimpse of a real possibility to change career and from then on it took off naturally.”
Verônica foi a primeira da família a transformar o hobby em profissão e, a julgar pelo sucesso que vem fazendo, certamente não decepcionou ninguém em casa.

The project, which was the idea of the singer’s boyfriend, Diogo Castelão, president of the Spanta Neném block, is aimed at “taking samba sessions back to the hillsides,” and includes music lessons and extra tuition for the children of the community. Vanessa participates by singing and going along whenever her schedule of concerts and recording permit. And speaking of social responsibility, Ferriani is also an ‘ecologically aware’ artist. She says that she sees sustainability “more and more as a collective necessity” and does her part by recycling, picking up trash on the beach and working with environmentally aware institutions. “But what I think is most important is to gently encourage the people around us to also adopt habits which are healthier and more responsible in terms of nature... in order to form this network of collective awareness.” It is worth watching out for the singer’s next CD, written by her and which is due for release in 2012. Com a mesma filosofia do Coworth Park, o elegante Restaurante Emiliano, em São Paulo, desenvolveu parcerias e iniciativas visando à sustentabilidade de sua cadeia de produção de alimentos. Após intensa exploração de técnicas culinárias, o irrequieto chef José Barattino, decidiu aproximar sua cozinha da terra e, junto a pequenos produtores rurais, elaborou um projeto de fortalecimento dos três principais pilares da cadeia de produção, isto é, o produtor, o produto e o consumidor final. O projeto “Sustentabilidade da Cadeia de Produção” engloba aspectos econômicos, sociais e ambientais dos agentes envolvidos. Assim, em parceria com produtores rurais, o Emiliano listou ações que serão desenvolvidas em três etapas principais. The elegant Restaurante Emiliano, in Sao Paulo, which has the same philosophy as Coworth Park, has developed partnerships and initiatives aimed at sustainability in its food production chain. After intense research into culinary techniques, the restless chef, José Barattino, decided to take his kitchen closer to mother earth and together with small rural producers developed a project to strengthen the three principal pillars of the production chain, ie the producer, the product and the end user. The project called “Sustainability in the Production Chain” embraces economic, social and environmental questions affecting those involved. A primeira delas, já em andamento, é voltada ao incentivo direto à agricultura familiar e à geração de demanda através da inserção crescente de produtos orgânicos, biodinâmicos e agroflorestais na lista de compras do restaurante. A matéria orgânica, resultante da coleta seletiva interna do restaurante, já funciona como matéria-prima para a compostagem e produção de adubo utilizado na fazenda. O próximo passo, visando à defesa do patrimônio cultural, incentivará a produção e utilização de plantas não convencionais, a retomada do plantio de produtos não comerciais e consequentemente a preservação de espécies em extinção. Como orientador da terceira fase, o Emiliano dará suporte em ações que visem à conscientização do consumidor e à manutenção da saúde, principalmente do público infantil, em palestras e visitas às fazendas produtoras. The first of these, already in progress, is aimed at providing direct incentive to the family agriculturalist and the generation of demand by adding organic, biodynamic and agro-forest products onto the restaurant’s shopping list. Organic material, resulting from separating waste within the restaurant is already providing the raw materials for producing compost for use on the farm. The next step, aimed at preserving cultural heritage will be to encourage the production and use of non-conventional plants, the re- introduction of cultivation of non-commercial products and as a consequence the preservation of species under threat of extinction. As supervisor of the third phase, Emiliano will support moves aimed at increasing consumer awareness and health care, principally in the case of young people, through talks and visits to producer farms. Há alguns anos, tive a oportunidade de participar de um curso de Biologia da Conservação, oferecido pela Fundação O Boticário, na Reserva Natural de Salto Morato, em Guaraqueçaba, no litoral do Paraná. Aquela foi, sem dúvida alguma, uma das experiências mais marcantes e transformadoras que já tive. A reserva é um lugar fascinante, de rara beleza natural, em meio à Mata Atlântica – bioma mais rico em biodiversidade do planeta. Na área, já foram catalogadas 650 espécies vegetais e 499 animais. Destas, quatro espécies de aves, cinco de felinos e uma de morcego estão na lista de animais ameaçados de extinção. Não poderia haver cenário mais adequado para reunir 24 pessoas de diversas instituições de todo o Brasil, dedicadas à preservação da natureza, e dois professores completamente envolvidos com a causa conservacionista.
Salto Morato A sanctuary where nature and people are at one Some years ago I had the opportunity to participate in a course on Conservation Biology, put on by the Fundação O Boticário, in the Nature Reserve at Salto Morato, in Guaraqueçaba, on the Paraná coast. This was, without a doubt, one of the most important and transforming experiences I have ever had. The reserve is a fascinating place, with rare natural beauty, surrounded by coastal rainforest, Mata Atlântica – the richest biome in biodiversity on the planet. Six hundred and fifty plant species and 499 animals have been catalogued in the area. Of these four species of birds, five felines and one bat are on the list of animals at risk of extinction. There could be no better setting than this to bring together 24 people from various institutions from all over Brazil, dedicated to nature preservation and two teachers, totally involved in the conservation cause. We were almost totally immersed in the natural world around us.

A imersão no mundo natural foi quase que absoluta. O contato com o mundo externo, mínimo. Trilhas interpretativas levaram-nos a lugares surpreendentes, como uma queda d’água de aproximadamente 100 metros, onde era impossível não sentir a sensação de completo deslumbre e reverência, e uma intrépida figueira, cuja raiz forma um portal sobre os seis metros de largura do Rio do Engenho, como se quisesse, assim como um ser humano, atravessá-lo. Maísa Guapiassú, engenheira florestal da Fundação, falou sobre a importância ética da conservação da biodiversidade, as consequências reais (e infelizmente ignoradas pela sociedade) do desmatamento, as relações surpreendentes existentes dentro dos ecossistemas e a necessidade urgente de revertermos este processo de utilização abusiva da natureza.
We had minimum contact with the outside world. Interpretative trails led us to unexpected places, like a waterfall of around 100 meters where it was impossible not to feel a sense of complete awe and reverence. There was also the intrepid fig tree, the root of which formed a portal across the six meters of the River Engenho, as though it wanted, like a human being, to cross it. Maísa Guapiassú, forest engineer at the Foundation, spoke of the ethical importance of conservation, of biodiversity, the real consequences (of which society sadly remains unaware), deforestation, the surprising relationships between the ecosystems and the urgent need for us to reverse the process of using nature abusively.
Quem também nos hipnotizou com sua paixão pela ecologia e por dados referentes às espécies animais, fragmentação de habitat e estratégias de conservação foi Fernando Fernandez, ph.D. em Ecologia e professor da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Confesso que me surpreendi com a forma precisa e matemática para criar modelos e quantificar algumas relações existentes na natureza.
Fernando Fernandez, PhD in Ecology and Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) also hypnotized us with his passion for ecology and for knowledge about species of animals, habitat fragmentation and conservation strategies. I have to admit that I was surprised by the precise, mathematical method of creating models and quantifying some of the relationships that exist in nature.
Os dados apresentados ao longo da história, de degradação da natureza pelas mãos do homem e do descaso da sociedade são alarmantes e tristes. Ao fim de cada aula estávamos um tanto quanto atordoados. Saíamos da sala de aula e lá estava ela, a natureza. Poderosa, imponente e ao mesmo tempo absolutamente frágil e impotente.
Data presented throughout history, of the devastation of nature at the hands of humans and society’s indifference are alarming and sad. At the end of the class we were rather perturbed. We left the classroom and there she was in front of us – nature powerful and imposing and yet so fragile and powerless.

Mas não foi só o intenso conteúdo passado pelos professores durante cinco dias, oito horas por dia, que provocaram uma espécie de catarse dentro de cada um. A convivência em grupo também foi um importante agente transformador. Nos intervalos das aulas, durante as refeições ou mesmo durante um mergulho no aquário – uma piscina natural de água transparente (e gelada!) –, aproveitávamos para conhecer melhor uns aos outros, trocarmos experiências ou simplesmente para nos surpreendermos juntos com a beleza do lugar.
But it was not just the intense content that the teachers presented over five days, eight hours a day, that provoked a kind of catharsis in each one of us. Interaction in the group was also an important transforming factor. In the breaks, at mealtimes or even when diving in the aquarium – a natural pool of transparent water (also freezing cold!), we took the time to get to know each other better, we exchanged experiences and sometimes we just took in the beauty of the place together.
Cada um nós saiu de lá com a certeza de que, além de termos uma conectividade inerente com a natureza, temos também um papel real na disseminação de informações e na adoção de atitudes que possam ajudar a salvá-la.
Each of us left there certain that as well as having an inherent connectivity with nature, we have a real role to play in spreading information and adopting attitudes that can help to save it.
Voltei também convicta de que a missão não só deste meio de comunicação, mas de muitos outros, é a de propagar informações que realmente conscientizem a sociedade sobre a importância de contribuir para a preservação e a conservação do meio ambiente e maneiras de fazê-lo. Não basta deixarmos para estudiosos, cientistas e ecólogos a responsabilidade de se envolver com a causa ambiental. Não podemos continuar achando que cabe apenas ao poder público ou às iniciativas privadas de empresas, como o Boticário, o compromisso de preservar a natureza. O exercício da cidadania é imprescindível para a manutenção de nossa vida no planeta.
I also returned convinced that the mission is, not just in this means of communication, but in many others, to pass on information that really brings awareness to society about the importance of contributing to preservation and conservation of the environment and ways of doing this. It is not enough to leave the responsibility for getting involved in the environmental cause to academics, scientists and ecologists. We cannot continue to think that commitment to preserving nature is up to the state or private initiatives, such as o Boticário. Acts of citizenship are essential in maintaining our life on the planet.

Como chegar
How to get there By car: On leaving Curitiba, take the BR 277 towards to coast and at km 30 take the PR 408 (Morretes-Antonina), which is tarmac. Take the PR 440 (Antonina-Cacatu) and after a short distance take the PR 405 (Cacatu-Guaraqueçaba). There are 79 km of dirt road. A signpost indicates the entrance to Salto Morato. This is not recommended for cars without four-wheel drive.
De carro: Partindo de Curitiba, pegar a BR 277 em direção ao litoral e, no km 30, acessar a PR 408 (Morretes-Antonina), que é asfaltada. Entrar na PR 440 (Antonina-Cacatu) e, um pouco adiante, acessar a PR 405 (Cacatu-Guaraqueçaba). São 79 km de estrada de chão. Uma placa sinaliza a entrada do Salto Morato. Não é aconselhável para carros sem tração nas quatro rodas. De barco: Há barcos que fazem o percurso entre Paranaguá e Guaraqueçaba. O passeio é bastante interessante, passando pela baía, por mangues e por outros atrativos naturais do litoral norte do Paraná. É necessário alugar um automóvel para fazer o translado de Guaraqueçaba até Salto Morato, que dura cerca de 40 minutos.
By boat: There is a boat service between Paranaguá and Guaraqueçaba. The trip is interesting, passing through the bay, through mangrove swamps and through other natural attractions on the north coast of Paraná. Minha relação com o mar começou, de forma inevitável, na infância. Nasci em Copacabana, morei na Avenida Atlântica, estávamos sempre na praia e o que minha mãe mais gostava de fazer era mergulhar no mar. O mar também é a paixão do meu marido. Brinco que ele é filho de Iemanjá. Quando me casei, viemos morar em Curitiba e tínhamos uma lancha pequena em Guaratuba, no litoral do Paraná, pois o Ruy sempre gostou de pescar e de esquiar.
THE SEA IN MY PATH I have been unavoidably involved with the sea since I was a child. I was born in Copacabana and we lived on Avenida Atlantica so we were always at the beach and my mother loved to dive in the sea. The sea is my husband’s passion too. I tease him saying that he is the son of the sea goddess Iemanjá. When we got married we came to live in Curitiba and we had a small motor launch in Guaratuba, on the Paraná coast because Ruy loved to fish and waterski.

Cantinho da Sereia | mermaid’s corner
As crianças foram nascendo, Fernanda, Camila e Fabiano, e nós saíamos pela Baía de Guaratuba junto com os sobrinhos para esquiar. O Ruy e o Fabiano (bem pequeno) com sua inesquecível galocha azul saíam cedo para pescar. Foi ótimo ver as crianças crescendo com o mar como cenário.
We had our children, Fernanda, Camila and Fabiano and we all used to take off for the Guaratuba Bay along with our nieces and nephews to go waterskiing. Ruy and Fabiano, who was still very small, used to go out early to fish in their unforgettable blue wellies. It was great to see the children growing up near the sea.
Mas meu sonho sempre foi ter um barco com sala e quarto separados. E a cada troca de barco aumentávamos um pouco o seu tamanho, mas ainda não era hora da tal divisão de ambientes.
But it had always been my dream to have a boat with a separate saloon and bedroom. We gradually changed to larger and larger boats but the time still had not come for separate rooms.
Até que, no carnaval de 2011, a surpresa!!!! Conquistamos nosso barco com sala, dois quartos e uma ampla área externa para reunir a família e os amigos. Amo nosso barco. É a minha realização. Adoro ficar na cozinha preparando os aperitivos. Depois o almoço, eu e minha sogra organizamos o cardápio para a reunião da família. Adoramos ficar na Baía de Guaratuba ou na Ilha da Paz, em Santa Catarina. Fico esperando o fim de semana para irmos à praia. Não tenho preguiça... é o nosso momento de refazer as energias para depois recomeçarmos a semana.
Until Carnival 2011 – surprise!!! We got our first boat with a saloon, two bedrooms and a spacious outdoor area to gather family and friends. I love our boat. It is a dream come true. I love to spend time in the galley preparing snacks and after lunch, my mother-in-law and I prepare the menu for the family get together. I love to spend time in the Guaratuba Bay or on the Ilha da Paz in Santa Catarina. I look forward to the weekends and to going to the beach. I never feel too lazy .... this is the time to recharge our energy to start the next week.
Na Páscoa, enfeitei o barco de coelhinho e já estou preparando os enfeites para o Natal. Aproveito cada minuto de nossos passeios. Depois do almoço, sento na minha cadeira para tomar sol e curtir cada paisagem, cada pôr do sol. Só faltava uma coisa para completar minha realização: fazer uma viagem e dormir no barco. Fizemos isso no feriado de junho e foi simplesmente MARAVILHOSO. Eu amo meu barco e sou muuuiiiitooo feliz nele.
At Easter I dressed the boat up as a rabbit and I am already preparing the Christmas decorations. I enjoy every moment of our trips. After lunch I sit in my chair to sunbathe and I enjoy all the different views and every sunset. There was just one thing missing to complete the dream – the go on a trip and sleep on the boat. We did this on the June holiday and it was simply WONDERFUL. I love my boat and I am so happy on her.
