AENG 273 - Digital Representation Tools for Architects

An introduction to different forms of digital representation in architecture: architectural drawings, 3D-modeling, rendering, sheet layout design and fundamentals in animation and image editing. Introduction to Building Information Modeling (BIM) and graphical representation software. Such techniques are utilized as design tools for the creative development of projects and communication with clients and consultants from different disciplines in architectural practice.

AENG 453 - Architectural Design Studio III Studio on Environment and Sustainability. This studio will allow students to investigate various aspects of the environment and ‘sustainability’ as a force within the architectural profession. Recent increases in global climatic and social pressures have necessitated environmental awareness as well as new architectural design solutions. Using current sustainable design strategies as a foundation, students will analyze and implement their own environmentally responsible analysis and designs. Conservation and recycling of materials and waste management. Field trip to gain hand on experience on the sustainable design and waste management is a requirement.

Number of Floors

Luxurious Housing 4 buildings x 2 units/floor x 12 floors/building = 96 units. Middle Income Housing 7 buildings x 2 units/floor x 5 floors/building = 70 units. Low Income Housing 3 buildings x 8 units/floor x 5 floors/building = 120 units. 7 buildings x 4 units/floor x 5 floors/building = 140 units. 5 buildings x 2 units/floor x 5 floors/building = 50 units. 120 + 140 + 50 = 310 units. Total number of units = 96 + 70 + 310 = 476 units. Average number of people per unit = 5 people/unit. Total number of people in Huteyyah = 5 x 476 = 2,380 people. Area of Site = 20,160 m2. 1 feddan = 4,200 m2. Therefore, area of site = 20,160/4,200 = 4.8 feddan. Estimated population of Huteyyah = 450-500 person/feddan. The proposed housing project: 2,380 people ! 4.8 feddan Therefore 2,380/4.8 = 496 people/ feddan Therefore, the new housing project will be successful in housing all Huteyyah inhabitants.

DESIGN CONCEPT Most buildings on the site has a mere plaster finish, while only few has stone. This is a plaster-finishing wall.

The concept was to make use of the external road networks surrounding the site in the division of areas into low, middle and luxurious. Also, according to the density analysis, the most of El-Huteyyah’s inhabitants are of the low and middle income users, so, it was considered to allocate the largest part of the land to the housing of low income group, then followed by the middle income group while the luxurious group has the least area on site.

The structural systems used on the site are skeleton and wall bearing systems. This is a wall bearing structural system of one of the buildings.

Types of the Buildings

All roads are found outside the site boundaries. Within the site itself, there are only dead-ends except for one road on which the mosque overlooks.

This relationship shows that El-Hutteyah is a highly dense area due to the existence of more buildings than open spaces.

Strengths

Weaknesses

Opportunities

Threats

-Good Accessibility. -Surrounding buildings are in good condition (Upper-Middle Class).

-Very weak structural system -Lots of dead ends. -Very limited budget.

-Some buildings are in good condition. -There is a mosque, which we will keep. -There are some vacant areas at the main street corners.

-Very narrow street widths (3m). -High density . -Some apartments are used as shops.

Alternative 2 was chosen to be developed because it mostly, of other alternative, reflects the design concept. In alternative 2, the major part of the land is dedicated to the low income group, then to the middle income and the smallest area for the luxurious. The roads are directly connected to the external road network, and they surround each area providing proper accessibility. As for the pedestrian paths, they are designed to emphasize the division of clusters in each area. Structural System
