Booklet Printing Using Adobe InDesign This technique only works if you are printing using a Laser Printer. The Mac Suite laser printers print on either A4 or A3 paper. To print on larger paper sizes go to the Digital Print Resource. Checklist 1. For a saddle stitched booklet (magazine or pamphlet style) your InDesign document must have a multiple of four pages (12, 16, 24, 28 etc) 2. Make sure that two pages (a spread) will fit on either A4 or A3 paper. A full-bleed spread made up of two A4 pages will not print onto A3 as there is a non-printable border around the edge of the print. The same applies to A4 paper. On screen in InDesign this 8 page layout appears as Readers Spreads, the layout is as it will be when the book is printed, bound and trimmed
To print use File > Print Booklet
Check the booklet type is set to 2-up Saddle Stitch and click Print Settings‌ Choose the Printer you will print to, either Black and White or Colour In the General Options make sure Print Blank Pages is Checked (if not any Blank Pages will not be included in the Print, resulting in the Pages being re-ordered)
In the Setup options choose the paper size you will be printing onto (in this case A3 Landscape) and Centre the Page Position - the print will be double sided and this will ensure the print on the front of the sheet of paper lines up with what is on the back
In the Marks and Bleed options check Crop Marks and make sure that Use Document bleed Settings is checked. This will ensure however much Bleed was set when you created the document will be printed.
Click on the Printer‌ button
Click Show Details and Choose Short Edge Binding from the Two Sided menu
Click Print. You will be returned to the Print Settings dialogue. Click OK and you will be returned to the Booklet Printing Dialogue The Preview will show how InDesign has reordered the pages of your document
There will be Messages and Warnings if: There are not enough pages and InDesign has had to add Blank Pages in order to make the total up to a multiple of 4 The Paper Size is not big enough to Print a spread with Bleed and Crop Marks You can confirm that the Printers Spreads are correct‌ The spreads add up to one more than the total number of pages in the book - in this case 4+5 =9, 6+3=9, 8+1=9, 2+7=9 Click Print
