Even bits that won’t make it into my submission - do the road rand of research then be selective. Don’t want to lose stuff so - blog it This should provide a clearer head for the pain key aspects of what I want to include / what I want to not include. Should help me organise my material, written work and make decisions about practical. Provides the synthesis. Overview of today’s lecture:
Key Areas:
What we are aiming to achieve within written work:
Analyse and critically evaluate my own source material to formulate my opinions and structuring my own argument to make my point. Decide on my key quotes!!! From this I need to do further but more concise research: Should find: Specific quotes References Images Etc (more focused research) to back up the key points and quotes outlined Keep balance between theory (written) and practical. Make decisions about both and how they relate. Do not make work about my dissertation - be contextual and theoretical. Say this is where this work has come from and this is how I’ve developed it. Chapter 4: evaluate written and practical and discuss how they relate.
Title can change depending on how my research and written develops Title: focused line of enquiry I’m delivering through written and practical
This is about me showing tutors what has been going on. So tutors can see where my submission has come from. Keep it up to date. Blog is here to clarify what I’m doing. A record! Be disciplined. Set time aside to blog COP3 BULLET POINT STATEMENTS IN BLOG- about why I am posting things. What’s changed. What hasn’t worked and why. What I proposed and haven’t managed to do. 3 weeks time: STOP RESEARCHING AND START WRITING! tell myself this is it. This is what I’ve got and what I’m going to base everything on! Then it becomes about writing and doing. STICK TO THIS DATE!
Example of Language to use in introduction:
Should be a series of statements. Not in depth - just clear. What I’m going to do. How I’m going to do it. A summary.
Advice & Information
Conclusion: Could bullet point conclusion now to make sure I hit those points brought my essay. Make a bullet pointed list of what I’ve found out, what I’ve dismissed etc and this is what should be written about in my conclusion. This is what I’ve found out, these are my conclusions, my opinions and I’ve backed this up. Answer my title / question. Can then look at conclusion. What have I found out? How have I proved that? Is this covered in my essay and introduction? Everything in conclusion should have been proved and should have evidence throughout the essay to back it up. Should be explicitly related to research title and question outlines. Should be academic and formal in tone. EVERYTHING need to be referenced! Blog - show links where I found material Essay - Harvard referenced Go back through blog and reference EVERYTHING!!
Right: Example conclusion language Advice: write simply. Make it cleaver by talking about cleaver things. Don’t use language I don’t mean. Keep statements and sentences short. Use structured language and triangulation.
What we need to show. (Tutors shouldn’t have to go hunting for this): Apply theory to practice. What is my argument? What do I want to prove? How does it relate to my practice? That botanical Illustration does still have a place within contemporary society.
