Organising your research project: Integrating Theory & Practice Just do it May not know where it’s going but just do something and tutor will help me find a way through it. don’t prioritise one thing over the other (practical vs written) etc Have a process I want to investigate. This creates ideas and in turn produces an outcome Written

Practical

Written

Practical

What ideas is my written research throwing up for me to respond to practically? Processes? Communication? Visualisation? Need initial link between content and practice - will help provide synthesis Ask myself what I want to produce - a series of prints? Prints and colour Is there anyway I could look into colour and print as a direction? How does the content I am researching and developing now form the content of the practical? Blog Brief statements Quotes Reflections Evaluations

Initial experiments and drawings Images I’ve found Links I’ve found and why

Advice: written element

Pick a focus within my theme of colour and explain what / how I know about this This chapter is about showing tutors that we know about our subject Triangulation is to show we understand the connections between my source materials that I’m bringing in and describing here and why they are key. Focus down my references to the key ones and elements of these. Question tutors are asking is “can I critically analyse?” Show tutors I can research and I know my subject Shows I can select references and source material that best underlines my question / area of focus

Document all larger areas of research and writing / drafts on my blog - the versions before cutting things out.

Tell tutors how I have applied theory to practice. What informed my decisions and how did the practical go? Critical reflection. Describe intentions and how well this went through process to product. Where am I at now in my practice having done this work. How have I moved on in my practice and how does it relate? Where could it go in the future? Where could you have taken this project? This is where I got too with this project and this is where it could go after being informed by my research.

Planning the project: - Write down all questions I want to investigate - Consider each of this questions on their merits - Are they relevant? - Focus on 2 of the questions (primary and secondary) - What do I really want to know / find out? - Write first thoughts on A4 - Ask “what is the purpose of this study?” - Is my question doable? Remember this is a “working title” – can be adjusted later to fit the changes and development in my research and essay focus

Choose an appropriate title:

Consider Timings What is the time limit for my research Blog this Consider holidays, works, life, other, modules and briefs Think about working title and what different components and parts need researching Allocate deadlines and timelines for all of these things that need doing Allow generous time for readings and writing Be ready for tutorials – these act as deadlines Include targets and milestones

Key texts / Literature search:

- focus on 5 keys texts relevant to my soeicifc focus / topic
