Grupo Otero – The Secret
OTERO
IS LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
From the sudden shock of the pandemic to an excellent 2021, Otero in many ways symbolises the experiences shared by Marbella’s real estate sector as a whole, yet this growing all-in-one developer is not resting on its laurels but is preparing for a rapidly evolving future.

The pandemic that arrived in 2020 brought disruption to the world, and affected the Costa del Sol as well, but the way in which the property market in particular has rebounded surpasses even the most optimistic scenarios one could have envisaged last year. Naturally, the sector was propelled by the pent-up demand released when countries and economies began to open up again, but added to this is the realisation among many that when it comes to lifestyle dreams and quality of life, it is better not to put off decisions.
The lockdown experience crystallised this in the minds of people across the globe, and as a result many have been looking for a change, resulting in a wave of enquiries into second homes and even relocation to the Costa del Sol. The latter has been facilitated by the growing remote working trend, and together all these factors have made 2021 a heady year for property in this region, with the demand for especially ready to move into modern villas and apartments beginning to outstrip supply.
“On this coast we almost can’t build fast enough to keep up,” says Rubén Otero, CEO of the Otero Group, a property developer that incorporates construction, architecture, engineering, sales and support services such as landscaping and interior design under one umbrella. “The past few years have marked steady growth in our company, and we have evolved along with the new design styles, technologies and innovations that are now central to contemporary homes on the Costa del Sol. But we believe there is still so much more evolution and innovation coming, and we’re ready for it.” ›
THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY
In October, the company hosted a fun-filled event in classic Costa del Sol style at the Los Naranjos Golf clubhouse to celebrate a great year in business, the continued expansion of the company and to thank the Otero team and its many colleagues, suppliers and collaborators for the important part each has played in achieving this level of success. The lively event also saw the official presentation of The Secret, a private community of 34 designer villas from the drawing board of Joaquín Torres, partner at A-cero and one of the most celebrated architects in Spain today.
For Otero he has created a collection of boutique villa designs that can only be described as ‘next-generation luxury’. They take the styling, amenities, comforts, technologies and layout flow of today’s villas to the next level, marking an important step forward in Marbella property development. A fine example of this is Sail, a 21st century villa set to become a reference point in Real de La Quinta, the new country club resort located on the threshold of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. Surrounded by thousands of hectares of nature, yet close to Marbella, it is an eco-orientated living environment.
“This was one of the inspiring factors of the project,” says Joaquín Torres. An architect known for his aesthetic eye and ability to design outstanding villas, he also emphasises the social and environmental responsibility his profession carries. “Architects give shape to structures that may be private yet impact on the landscape and the urban fabric, so we have to be mindful of what and how we create.” Aware of the mistakes made in the past, he gives his all to projects that are creative, aesthetically inspiring and in harmony with their surroundings.
“Development today has to be sustainable, embrace technology and have a social conscience. In other words, be a building block of the community, and in locations such as Marbella more than anywhere the focus has to be upon quality. We set ourselves this task with The Secret and it’s great to be proud of the direction we’ve taken with this landmark project and the product that has resulted from it,” says the architect who believes Otero is paving the way for next-generation development on the Costa del Sol.
