Denial

When famous American historiographer, Deborah E. Lipstadt, accuses a group of journalists and historians of being Holocaust deniers in her book Denying the Holocaust, she is sued for defamation by journalist and historian, David Irving. Lipstadt resolves to defeat Irving and the rest of the English deniers by relying on expert opinion as well as the testimony of the one sole survivor of Shoah. In a landmark decision, the court deemed Irving a denier, anti-Semite and racist who “for his own ideological reasons persistently and deliberately misrepresented and manipulated historical evidence”.

La La Land

This dazzling new musical begins on a Los Angeles highway. This is where Sebastian meets Mia, in the middle of bumper-to-bumper traffic (which symbolises how stuck both characters are in their lives). Mia is an out-of-work actress who is sick and tired of being turned down for roles, while Sebastian dreams of bringing jazz to a culture-starved audience. Together, they work out an ingenuous plan that will take then to new heights of success.

Why Him?

During his holidays, Ned (Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston), a loving yet overprotective father, takes the whole family to visit his daughter, who is studying at an out-of-town university. Ned is happy to see that she is striving academically, but his good mood is short-lived, for he meets her boyfriend, Laird (James Franco), a millionaire from Silicon Valley who is well intended but highly eccentric. The rivalry between father and boyfriend intensifies when Ned begins to feel out of place in his daughter’s technoglam world and when he discovers that Laird is about to pop the big question.

TOP FILMS t o wat ch out for

in 2017

The year 2017 promises to be a big one in the world of film, with everything from thrillers to romances and musicals lining up to keep you entertained and rake in the big bucks for their producers. Our top picks, compiled by Marisa Cutillas, include:

ZZ THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE: We all remember how The Lego Movie (released in 2014) brought our children’s favourite toy to life in a spectacular way. The magic will be back in the sequel, which features the voices of Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis and many more Hollywood stars. In the film, Batman has an unhealthy obsession with the joker, whom he seeks to force into a mental asylum. Alfred encourages Batman to take responsibility for his life by raising his son, who isn’t as naturally gifted as Batman at fighting off dangerous criminals. ZZ LOGAN: Director James Mangold once again directs talented Aussie hunk, Hugh Jackman, in the third and final installment of the Wolverine series. The film is set in the future: Xavier and the X-Men have been crushed by a powerful corporation and Logan must defeat their leader with the help of a little girl with special powers. ZZ KONG: SKULL ISLAND: Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson star in an exciting new tribute to the legend of King Kong. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the film sees an intrepid team of explorers visit a mysterious island in search of a mythical serum. There, they encounter a group of mythical giant gorillas known as Kongs. ZZ FAST 8: We all thought that the demise of Paul Walker meant the end of the Fast & Furious series, but the world’s fastest racing team is back and they hope to make “the best movie you’ve ever seen,” according to Vin Diesel, who plays leader of the gang, Dominic Toretto. In the upcoming film, the team heads for New York, in search of new adventures. There, they meet their nemesis

– the Shaw Brothers, who are hell bent on putting an end to the crafty crimestoppers. ZZ GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2: The first film in the Guardians of the Galaxy series had to be one of the top films of 2014, raking in almost over billion dollars worldwide. The group of unlikely heroes (Star Lord, Groot, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Drax the Destroyer) are back for more action, as they struggle to keep their newfound team together and discover that Star Lord has a rather interesting family history. ZZ TOY STORY 4: Woody, Buzz and the gang are back in a whole new adventure. This time, the focus is less on the humantoy connection and more on a beautiful love story that will develop between two of our favourite toys. ZZ WONDER WOMAN: Gal Gadot gives her all as Wonder Woman: the Amazon with muscles of steel and a heart of gold. Diana (Wonder Woman) meets a handsome American pilot (Chris Pine) who asks for her assistance. She joins him in his homeland and helps stop a violent world war. ZZ SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING: Spiderman returns to his original creators, Marvel, in this fantastic film which stars a brand new Spidey (Tom Holland) and which takes the character back to his high school days, when he finds it difficult to reconcile his super powers with his old lifestyle. ZZ JUSTICE LEAGUE: Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman are just a few superheroes who will join forces to face the catastrophic threat posed by Steppenwolf, who is out to find three mysterious boxes hidden by Mother Earth.

ZZ STAR WARS: Episode VIII: In this exciting episode, Star Wars fans could finally discover who Rey’s real parents are and who left her behind on Jakku. Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker, Rey and Yoda’s ghost discover unknown facts about the origins of the Force and the secret kept by the Jedi Council for years. e

GUNS ´N ROSES Happy New Year to you all and as JOHN LENNON once sang, “Let's hope it's a good one.” Málaga is getting the year off to an active start – elsewhere not much booked up but check your local weekly press for any late arranged gigs. All information on this page was correct at the time of writing. Málaga’s Teatro de Cervantes gets the New Year rolling with 60-piece ROCK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA giving a tribute to the greatest rock bands ever on the 3rd. The MERSEY BEATLES will perform a two-hour show (something the original Fab Four never did) with replica costumes and period instruments on the 4th. Then on the 5th, the CINEMA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA will concentrate on pop hits of the 80s and 90s. For more information on all the above and ticket prices: teatrocervantes.es In February, the same venue host the blues legend JOHN MAYALL on the 11th. Download, the famous rock festival franchise will come to Spain (Madrid) for the first time between June 22 and 24. LINKIN PARK, SYSTEM OF A DOWN and the rap/rock super group PROPHETS OF RAGE (members of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, PUBLIC ENEMY and CYPRESS HILL) have so far been named. For more info and tickets: downloadfestival.es/en More festival news: the second Mad-Cool has named the FOO FIGHTERS, GREEN DAY and the KINGS OF LEON as their headliners; the three-dayer takes place in the capital from July 6 to 8. For ticket info, madcoolfestival.es/en GUNS ´N ROSES will play at Madrid’s Estadio Vicente Calderón stadium on June 4. A sell-out is expected and there is already talk of an extra gig so keep an eye on livenation.es TV news: The BBC Music Sound Of 2017 Award winner will be named on Radio One (January

6) and among the favourites are MAGGIE ROGERS and the much rated RAYE. Former winners include 50 CENT (2003), KEANE (2004), CORINNE BAILEY RAE (2006), ADELE (2008), ELLIE GOULDING (2010), JESSIE J (2011) and SAM SMITH (2014). Also nominated for the above is the blues/R&B artist RAG’N’BONE MAN who has already won the highly regarded BRITs Critics’ Choice Award for 2017 and he will get his big break on primetime TV by joining OLLY MURS, CRAIG DAVID and CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS to perform at the BRIT Awards nominations launch on January 14 which will be broadcast live on ITV. Britain’s entry for the competition no one really wants to win, Eurovision, will be chosen on January 27. Eurovision: You Decide is a telephone/internet vote for the six hopefuls and the show will be broadcast live on BBC2 (TBC). So if the UK has another bad competition this May the powers that be can blame the public for choosing the entry. If you want to hear the songs ahead of the live broadcast, you can do so from January 23 on the official website. Movie news: the long-awaited FREDDIE MERCURY bio-pic is finally going to be made with RAMI MALEK, the star of the much loved US drama Mr. Robot, playing the legendary singer. UK comedian SACHA BARON COHEN was the original choice but he pulled out in 2013 over “creative differences” and the film has been on the back burner ever since. There are also ‘differences’ on the sequel to the iconic flick Quadrophenia; the original was based on the music from the 1973 album by THE WHO. Band members ROGER DALTREY and PETE TOWNSHEND have not agreed anything with the film makers of the follow-up but it will still go ahead. Several of the original actors are returning including main mod PHIL DANIELS and former pop punkster TOYAH WILCOX.

As expected, BOB DYLAN did not collect his Nobel Prize for Literature due to “pre-existing commitments” but added he might travel to Stockholm later in the year to give his Nobel Lecture.

MADONNA Has BRUNO MARS played a part in a possible ONE DIRECTION get together later this year? He has recently been working with both HARRY STYLES and NIALL HORAN, they met up and the latter is hopeful something will materialise soon. But you can count out ZAYN MALIK after his comments at the American Music Awards towards the end of last year. He has also been busy with TAYLOR SWIFT with I Don't Wanna Live Forever, a song for the next Fifty Shades film which is officially out next month. She is

following in the footsteps of MARIAH CAREY with her own 13-part TV reality series. Mariah’s World went on air last month – having watched the first episode – what world does that woman live in? But one pop queen who did nail it on the box recently was MADONNA as the passenger on the popular JAMES CORDEN Carpool Karaoke. How are LITTLE MIX and BRUNO MARS, who are the next to appear in the car, gonna’ follow that? e

TOP NON-FICTION READS

FOR THE NEW YEAR

The start of yet another year begs us to ask ourselves a few crucial questions that are necessary if we are to progress: What do we expect of ourselves this year? What goals are we working towards? Who can we obtain inspiration from? Marisa Cutillas suggests a few top reads, to learn how to be a better, more successful and kinder person, thanks to the experiences and musings of people who have what it takes to make us think, dream and do…

BORN TO RUN BY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

Bruce Springsteen is one of the most inspiring artists of our generation; a man who espoused the importance of fighting against the system, who laid bare the nature of the struggle of man vs machine; an artists who embodied the very essence of living according to one’s beliefs, and of working hard, every day, for one’s art. In this dazzling autobiography, we discover how the legend was made – Springsteen’s comprehensive knowledge of rock history, his immense belief in the value of his music, the many hours he dedicated to practising and composing, and his conviction that his talent could redeem a jaded population. Utterly surprising is his keen awareness, from a very young age, of where he wanted his career to go. Writes the Boss, “In the beginning I knew I wanted something more than a solo act and less than a one-man-one-vote democratic band. I’d been there and it didn’t fit me. Democracy in rock bands, with very few exceptions, is often a ticking time bomb… A moderate in most other aspects of my life, here I was extreme.”

BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME BY TA-NEHISI COATES

This beautiful book is a letter written by the author to his 15-year-old son. It encapsulates the difficulty of growing up in a racist society in which success and safety often depend on the colour of one’s skin. Coates warns against the danger of believing in the American Dream: “Historians conjured the Dream. Hollywood fortified the Dream. The Dream was gilded by novels and adventure stories… Here is what I would like for you to know: In America, it is traditional to destroy the black body — it is heritage.” He pleads with his son to struggle to find wisdom, to fight for everything his ancestors left behind, and to put all his efforts into saving the suffering Planet, even though he knows that ‘The Dream’ will never come true.

NOT DEAD YET BY PHIL COLLINS

Genesis drummer/singer/songwriter provides a witty, honest, sometimes funny read about his rise to the top – his best shows, his relationship troubles and his rise to the top of the charts. Phil Collins is one of only three musicians to sell over 100 million records both in a group and as a soloist and many would argue he is one of the world’s best love song writers (having penned tunes like Against all Odds, In the Air Tonight and One More Night). Not many fans know it, but Collins started working as a child actor. He also began playing the drums at a very young age and became a singer only after the departure of Peter Gabriel from Genesis. He tells a good story and lets us in on what it was like to work with everyone from Eric Clapton to Robert Plant. An excellent foray into the recording industry at a time when albums still made big money.

THE BOOK OF JOY BY DALAI LAMA AND DESMOND TUTU

This book, by two of the 21st centuries greatest thinkers, promises ‘Lasting happiness in a changing world’. The advice given is very practical and to the point, despite the deeply spiritual character of both gurus. At one point the Dalai Lama says, “One of my practices comes from an ancient Indian teacher… he taught that when you experience some tragic situation, think about it. If there’s no way to overcome the tragedy, then there is no use worrying too much. So I practice that… If something can be done about the situation, what need is there for dejection? And if nothing can be done about it, what use is there for being dejected?” The book espouses something very different from an avoidance of pain – sometimes, the most difficult experiences in life are those which can bring subsequent satisfaction. In the minds of the authors, suffering is very much akin to birth.

SHAKEN BY TIM TEBOW

“Most of us have been on the receiving end of rejection, a broken dream, or heartbreak. And while this is not an easy space to go through, when we are grounded in the truth, we can endure the tough times.” Thus speaks Tim Tebow, famous American football player and Heisman Trophy winner, who aims to do one thing with this book: show how it is possible to succeed even in the midst of disappointment, criticism and bad press. Tebow began playing football in college, and shone soon afterwards with the Denver Broncos. However, after being signed up to play for the New York Jets, he was let go after just one season. Still, he refused to relent, relying on his faith and on a handful of people who taught him important life lessons he freely shares with his readers.

A New Spirit of Ecstasy

THE ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH

Though the name revives a classic Rolls-Royce of the 1930s, this model marks a new direction by the famous marque to produce cars that are not only sumptuously luxurious, but also great to drive. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ROLLS-ROYCE

T

here was a time when the epitome of the luxury car was the limousine, and the limousine the epitome of class and wealth. The very word limousine came to be synonymous with Rolls-Royce, which had early on established itself as quite possibly the finest maker of top-end luxury cars in the world, so to own a Rolls-Royce and be chauffeured around town in exquisite style and opulence represented the pinnacle of success. In reality, not much has changed in this regard. There are others, but RollsRoyce has maintained its reputation for making the finest luxury cars in the world. Moreover, having one of these beautifully crafted vehicles in your personal fleet remains the ultimate sign of prosperity and success, just ask people from Britain and the US to China and the Middle East. What has changed is that the luxury market has broadened, and this has

created additional sub-segments with new demands and expectations. Put plainly, more luxury drivers now also want a car that is superbly sophisticated, comfortable and luxurious, but also capable of providing a powerful, exhilarating drive. Well, power was never a problem for RollsRoyce. After all, this was the company that built Spitfire engines among many others, and famously did not quote horsepower output, as figures beyond a certain measure simply become vulgar. While still full of classic virtues, the brand is no longer bashful to admit that its powertrains produce in excess of 600bhp – and they’re putting them to good use with the new Rolls-Royce Wraith.

HOW TO BLEND POWER, LUXURY AND PERFORMANCE

This could well have been the challenge put to the engineers at Rolls-Royce.

Absolute masters at creating a cosseting ride in which it would be possible to hold a cabinet meeting while driving on a dirt road, the marque now sought to add another option to its range: that of the powerful, luxurious but also exciting drive. The Rolls-Royce Wraith range, first launched in 2013, shows the solution to this conundrum. Sleek lines that are still truly elegant and unmistakably RollsRoyce, this grand coupé limousine recalls the spirit of the Continental but with an experience that is definitely 21st century. Top end engineering and technology combine with the finest leather, wood, brushed steel and carbon fibre composite to produce an interior that would have leading architects weep with envy and joy. Once ensconced within its finery, you can choose to purr along nicely in traffic, glide comfortably along the motorway… or step on its tail and wait for the reaction.

ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH BLACK BADGE 2016 For this, let’s go straight to the ‘bad boy’ option in the range, the Black Badge version released in 2016. Sleek and black, it radiates a little more menace than is customary from a Rolls-Royce, but that’s exactly what many of today’s high end buyers are looking for – along with a ride that raises the hairs on the back of the neck. Even the Spirit of Ecstasy is in high-gloss black tone, the overall stance darker and lower, like a powerful panther waiting to pounce. 21inch alloy composite wheels complete the impressive looks, which combine with 623 bhp and 870Nm of torque to lay down the gauntlet in terms of power. Have no fear, the 6,600cc engine does not lack power and, for a car of this size,

has remarkable agility to match. I would recommend easing into it gradually, first enjoying the smooth, effortless glide at high speeds and then slowly but surely getting down to the business of taking those bends and corners with more attitude. The car will respond to your wishes, especially in the most aggressive mode, its engine emitting the sort of roar known to drivers of sports cars as it puts the Wraith through curves with the kind of delightfully responsive steering and suspension you would not have believed forthcoming from a Rolls-Royce. With the Rolls-Royce Wraith the marque has succeeded in marrying beauty and the beast, giving you the wonderful choice between sophisticated limousine and sports

coupé. It can’t match a Lamborghini for downward drag and glued-to-the-tarmac road-holding, but that’s not the market Rolls-Royce are after. They’ve set their sights on other competitors with this new Rolls-Royce Experience. Having successfully launched The Rolls-Royce Experience in Ibiza in 2015, the company earmarked Marbella for inclusion in 2016 — offering selected drivers here an opportunity to experience what the Rolls-Royce Wraith Series is all about. As its local partner, Rolls-Royce chose boutique luxury real estate specialist Callum Swan, many of whose clients enjoyed becoming acquainted with the New Spirit of Ecstasy. i www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com

A wise teacher once said, “The human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” Art is, indeed, the stuff that inspires us, lifts our spirit, allows us to escape from the precision and routinary nature of daily life. There are fantastic art festivals all over the world though if investment and ultimate enjoyment is on your mind, Marisa Cutillas suggests booking a flight to these top events:

ART BASEL –

Switzerland/Miami

Art Basel, whether in Switzerland or Miami, is a big deal breaker for artists and investors with money to make and burn, respectively. The first edition of the prestigious art fair took place in Basel, Switzerland in 1970 and today, it is commonly referred to as ‘the world’s premier international art show for modern and contemporary art’. In 2002, Miami celebrated its very own Art Basel, enjoying great success and sparking a host of art-related events in the city. The 47th edition of Art Basel Switzerland took place in June 2016, enjoying significant sales and attendance by 286 premier galleries, as well as top international collectors and institutions hailing from a host of countries including the Philippines, Lebanon, Japan, Korea, Africa, the Soviet Union and more. Art Basel makes the most of the city’s rich history, with a full programme of events taking place every day in cultural institutions. Sales were big this year. Bloomberg reported, "First-time exhibitor Van Doren Waxter gallery, which mounted a survey of Richard Diebenkorn works on paper, said it sold more than $1 million worth of art in the first few hours." One Rudolf Stingel painting fetched €3.3 million, photographs by Cindy Sherman were sold for €379.000, while two charcoal drawings by Robert Longo sold for €473.000. One Madison dealer, meanwhile (Christopher van de Weghe) sold two Basquiat paintings for €3.8 million and €5.21 million, respectively. In addition to the investments made, the fair dazzled with a plethora of truly breathtaking works, including bright neon installations by Tracey Emin, gold skull sculptures by Takashi Murakami and Cubist portraits by Picasso. The fair was a true blend of works from the past to the present century and a joyful celebration of all things avante-garde. Next Year’s Art Basel will be taking place from June 15 to 18, 2017. i www.artbasel.com

This festival is the grandmother of them all, having celebrated its first edition in 1895. The event takes place in various venues along the floating city from June to November in odd-numbered years. Next year, the art-filled event will take place from May 13 to November 26, 2017 and will be curated by Christine Macel, who has expressed her commitment to “emphasising the important role artists play in inventing their own worlds and injecting generous vitality into the world we live in.” One of the best things about this Biennial is its dynamic nature. Art buffs float between the Central Pavilion (built in 1894 to house the first biennial exhibition the following year), Ca’ Giustinian (a 15thcentury Gothic Palazzo overlooking the Bacino di San Marco at the commencement of the Grand Canal), the Teatro alle Tese (which dates back to the 16th century and was once used to house theatrical and musical productions alike) and a plethora of gardens, palaces, theatres and libraries. Another novelty is the existence of various national pavilions. The event has long been considered a kind of World Expo of Art, with different countries and regions displaying the very best works by national artists. Some of the world’s most influential artists make their presence felt at The Venice Biennial, including Marina Abramović (whose performance art is simply groundbreaking), Henry Moore (renowned for his large-scale, semi-abstract sculptures of humans in marble and bronze) and Lucian Freud (known for his fleshy nude paintings). Further back in history, the list of exhibitors includes all-time greats such as Matisse, Modigliani and Kandinsky. This year’s Biennial promises to be better than ever, since it has been designed alongside the artists. Guests will travel from pavilion to pavilion, ‘reading’ the entire exhibition like chapters in a book that express the complexity of our world and the way we perceive it. i www.labiennale.org

The Whitney Biennial –

New York

This festival is the longest running survey of contemporary art in the United States, with a reputation for exhibiting work by some of the most promising, successful artists in the world, and for encouraging lively debate. The 2017 Biennial, to be held from March 17 to June 11, will be the 78th in a series of annual and biennial exhibitions started by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1932. It will be celebrated at the Museum’s new building in the Meatpacking District of downtown Manhattan, overlooking the Hudson River, hailed as “a deft, serious achievement, a signal contribution to downtown and the city’s changing cultural landscape” (The New York Times). One of this year’s overriding themes is ‘the formation of self and the individual’s place in a turbulent society,’ an idea which prevails in the work of most of the 63 artists chosen to exhibit. The exhibition will include well-established as well as upcoming artists, working in painting, sculpture, film and video, photography, performance, music, video game design, drawing, installation and more. Indeed, one of the most amazing features of The Whitney Biennal is the richness and diversity of genres covered. Featured artists vary in age, gender, sexual orientation, and race, and almost 50 per cent of exhibiting artists, are women. Some of the most established artists include Jo Baer (a minimalist artist who treads on a fine line between abstraction and figurative painting), Dana Schutz (famed for her humorous and sometimes wickedly grotesque subjects) and Jordan Wolfson (a multifaceted artist who uses film, installations, performance art and sculpture as social commentary). However, many artists featured will be completely unknown; take Henry Taylor (once a psychiatric technician whose earliest portraits featured his patients at a mental hospital). Taylor’s recent portrait, He’s Hear, and He’s Thair, featuring a homeless man, sold for a staggering $60,000. Jessi Reaves, measnwhile, makes sculptures that function as furniture; her work is made from an odd blend of foam, plexiglass, car parts, wood and sawdust. Another original exhibitor is Maya Stovall, a Detroit-born artist who dances in front of alcohol stores in her city and interviews her audience afterwards. The 2017 festival remains true to the Biennial’s original purpose: that of showing off the very best exponents of post-modernist work and highlighting the work of female artists – the latter was made possible by the hard work of pioneers such as Judy Chicago (born in 1939) and Barbara Kruger (born in 1945), who pioneered feminist art in the 1970s. i www.whintey.org/biennal

Foire Internationale d'Art Contemporain (FIAC) Paris

This annual event celebrated its 43rd edition in October, 2016, boasting attendance figures of 72,080. FIAC 2017 will be taking place from October 19 to 22, once again at The Grand Palais – the stunning exhibition hall and museum complex located on the Champs-Élysées. This year, the event considered a must for serious art investors, brought together a total of 186 modern and contemporary art galleries from 27 different countries, and featured work by over 4,000 artists. Over 72,000 visitors attended, some 12,200 of whom were collectors, institutions and art professionals. Excellent sales were made – including a work by Rudolf Stingle sold for €2.17 million, a drawing by Picasso for €424.000 and a drawing by Tom Wesselmann for €170.000. The event may be international, but it seriously highlights national museums' artistic heritage, with institutions the caliber of the Centre Pompidou Foundation or the Fondation Louis Vuittion taking part. As is the case with the Venice Biennial, events take place all over Paris, including the Jardin des Tuileries (which, in the 2016 event, had a 1949 Jean Prouvé building installed in its central area), the Place Vendôme (graced in 2016 with the stunning ‘tree’ sculptures of Ugo Rondinone) and even the Petit Palais, just opposite the Grand Palais, housing a plethora of beautiful artworks. FIAC is Paris’ way of saying that it is still very much an avante-garde city. Artists are encouraged to make any statements they wish – whether political or social; galleries are invited to show the breadth of their collections (thereby giving rise to a bevy of ‘mini versions’ of major galleries) and there is a fair called Officielle, which is dedicated exclusively to upcoming artists. Paris is the city of love, they say, but for one week every year, it is all about the love of art. i www.fiac.com La Vie Héroïque de B.S. – un opéra en 3 actes by Hoël Duret © TORRI

Frieze London Frieze comprises four magazines – frieze, frieze d/e, Frieze Masters Magazine and Frieze Week – and three international art fairs – Frieze London, Frieze Masters and Frieze New York, and offers a programme of special courses and lectures in London through Frieze Academy. Frieze was founded in 1991 by Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp, who launched frieze magazine, which specialises in contemporary art and culture. The Frieze London Fair, which took place in October 2016, is already getting ready for its next (15th) edition, to be held in Regent’s Park in October 2017. The fair, which is also celebrated in New York, gathered together 160 galleries from 30 countries last year, with highlights including The Nineties (a new section which invited 14 galleries to restage seminal shows of the decade); Focus (featuring young galleries and emerging talent); and Live (a platform for international performance art). Equally impressive was Sculpture Park: A free outdoor exhibition which will remain open until January 8, 2017, featuring 20 iconic works by 20th century masters and new commissions by contemporary talents, ensconced in the romantic English Gardens of Regent’s Park. The exhibition included a remake of a rare 1969 piece by Ed Herring – and classic painted sculptures by Claes Oldenburg and Jean Dubuffet alongside a newly created work by Eddie Martinez. The response from galleries at Frieze London 2016 was positive, with many reporting record sales. Work was sold by some of the most recognised artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Cy Twombly, Alexander Calder, Dieter Roth, Takesada Matsutani and Fausto Melotti. The whole city of London came alive, with art displayed in different fairs, galleries and museums. Although aimed mainly at serious, upmarket curators, Frieze has been transformed into a celebration of art for the people, who are rediscovering well known artists and discovering new ones, particularly from hitherto unknown areas like South America. Frieze is the type of fair that is buzzing from day one, with investors, curators and humble art buffs alike availing of the opportunity to view work by the world’s biggest movers and shakers. i www.frieze.com

BRINGING PRESSURE TO BEAR 100 blood-soaked teddies symbolising Syria’s children block Vladimir Putin’s path to the Berlin Chancellery

CLICK to Save the World

Once upon a time, if you wanted to rally support for a worthy cause you stood on a windswept street corner with a petition and a collection tin. Today you can bring down corrupt governments, save the African rhino and send aid to Syria with the click of a mouse. Belinda Beckett investigates the new people-powered warrior websites driving digital protest on a global scale.

A

n image of Vladimir Putin surrounded by blood-soaked teddy bears, captioned Stop Bombing Aleppo’s Children, set social media networks chattering last autumn. It was a stunt, or in modern parlance a meme – ‘a viral concept that spreads rapidly from person to person via the Internet’. The ‘blood’ was red dye and ‘Putin’ was a protestor wearing a mask although the pink-stained soft toys ambushing the Russian President’s visit to Berlin were real enough – a rapid response by Avaaz.org, to focus attention on the plight of families in the besieged Syrian city and Russia’s role in the war.

Viral marketing is one of the key weapons in the armoury of Avaaz, an American-based non-profi t NGO harnessing the power of the internet to get amazing things done on a global scale: such as spearheading the largest mobilisations on climate change in history, which saw 1.5 million people marching in 175 countries and lead to the 2015 Paris Climate Accord; or raising US$1.5m to supply cameras to citizen journalists throughout the Arab world and smuggle in real reporters to Syria, for which it was accused of taking sides in a civil war.

REQUEST STOP Avaaz hired a double-decker London bus to dissuade American expats from voting for Donald Trump. Alas, it was a bust...

This same online activist community took a herd of cardboard pigs to the doors of the World Health Organisation to demand an investigation into the link between swine flu and giant pig farms; created a three-mile human chain handshake from the Dalai Lama to the doors of the Chinese Embassy in London to request dialogue between the parties; and dressed its UK media director up as a Spitting Image caricature of Rupert Murdoch during an intensely-fought campaign to block the BSkyB merger, involving national newspaper advertising and lawyers to challenge the deal. Labour peer David Puttnam, who chaired the Joint Committee on the Communications Bill governing media monopolies, was among many impressed by the Avaaz campaign. “The process of government will never be the same again as any responsible adviser will now have to factor in the possibility of a crowd-sourced legal action,” he said. “This was not a bunch of yahoos marching up and down. It was hugely thought through.” He wasn’t wrong. Avaaz’s founder, British Canadian, Ricken Patel, is an Oxford and Harvard Masters graduate who worked as a conflict analyst in strife-torn African and Middle Eastern countries for the UN and the Gates Foundation before launching Avaaz in 2007, which means ‘voice’ in various eastern languages. Its mission is to ‘bring people-powered politics to decision-making everywhere’. Whether that’s blocking biotech giant Monsanto’s licence to produce the cancer-linked weed killer glyphosate, winning international agreement to protect 30 per cent of the world’s oceans or ending the career of Brazil’s ‘corruption king’, politician Eduardo Cunha – just three of the many victories Avaaz claims – the campaigns it throws its cash behind are dictated by whatever its supporters click on most.

BEE STING

Bernie the blow-up bee helped Avaaz sting the EU into imposing a two-year ban on neonicotinoids – linked to a massive decline in bee populations worldwide. The killer pesticides are outlawed in Europe pending a full independent scientific review. During two years of relentless campaigning, Avaazers flooded European ministers with thousands of messages, raised a 2.6 million signatures petition, intervened at the shareholder meeting of pesticide giant Bayer, funded opinion polls and dressed up as beekeepers to parade Bernie across the continent. Making a beeline for Spain and Germany, the ban’s key opponents, the activist insect created such a buzz that both nations flipped to supporting the ban, while Friends of the Earth commented: “Avaaz’s massive petition and creative campaigning helped push this over the edge.”

TROPHY WIN After the ‘murder’ of Cecil the lion, SumOfUs campaigners persuaded America’s ‘big four’ airlines to stop freighting big game trophies worldwide

There are hundreds of campaigns to choose from on the dynamic website and they get thousands of clicks. Understanding what makes one cute kitten video go viral but not another, and translating that into a campaign against genocide or species extinction, has been the organisation’s masterstroke. Saving appealing Bengal tigers from a ‘planetfrying coal plant’ is currently tipping the scales at one million signatures. The Internet has made petitioning a cinch, doing away with the administrative hassle of processing scrawled signatures on paper. An email address carries more clout and signatories will be told if an MP, government minister or CEO has failed to act. By their nature, petition-based websites – and there are many out there – have rigorous privacy policies but read the small print, as they do share some information with stakeholders. To date, Avaaz has organised 302 million actions and 3,000 campaigns, all pushed and paid for by ordinary citizens. Some 30,000 Avaazers donate monthly, be it only €5. Avaaz is hugely proud that its hefty US$20 million annual budget is entirely funded by the man in the street. And the website makes it so disarmingly easy to part with your money electronically and give out your personal details for a good cause. The simple act of adding your email address sends the petition’s target a standard message in your name and you can spread the word on your Facebook MASKED AVENGERS Avaazers stand up to biotech giant Monsanto

wall or Twitter feed by clicking on the social media tabs. In under a decade, Avaaz has grown into the largest online activism organisation on the planet, making the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament – which counted 110,000 members at its 1983 peak – look like Billy No Mates. The original business plan of reaching five million supporters in five years was torn up after 18 months. Membership currently stands at over 44 million – three million more than the Democratic Party of the United States. You can watch the numbers rise at a rate of 100 every five-to-ten minutes on the Avaaz website, which operates in 17 languages since its members live in 194 countries of the world; even the skeleton staff of this lean start-up has grown from nine in year one to triple digits, based in its New York HQ and dotted around the globe. As a virtual organisation, most of the work is done over email, telephone and Skype. Avaaz is by no means the only organisation out there tapping into the power of the crowd and pocketing the small change of millions for humanitarian causes. Remember Cecil the lion, who was stalked, skinned and beheaded by an American dentist for a wall trophy in 2015? SumOfUs. org turned it into a campaign headlined ‘Cecil the lion was murdered – and airlines would be happy to transport his dead body’. The tsunami of response convinced America’s ‘big four’ airlines to stop freighting lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo trophies worldwide.

DEFEATING THE MURDOCH MAFIA A stilt-walking Rupert Murdoch caricature controlling Jeremy Hunt and David Cameron puppets outside London’s Department of Culture dominated headline news during the summer of 2011. The stunt was part of a ninemonth campaign by Avaaz to block the media mogul’s takeover of Britain’s BSkyB, involving one million online actions, a petition signed by half a million people and 30,000 phone calls to MPs, including 5,000 to the direct lines of Jeremy Hunt, Nick Clegg and David Cameron. The actions played a critical role in delaying the BSkyB merger deal until the phone hacking scandal buried it.

BIG APPLE PROTEST part of the largest mass mobilisation for climate change in history

Styling itself as a global consumer watchdog, SumOfUs hit cyberspace in 2011 with a radical agenda focused almost exclusively on stamping out rogue business practices. Under the slogan ‘fighting for people over profits’, it holds the world’s corporate giants accountable on issues such as worker exploitation, discrimination, human and animal rights, corruption and corporate power grab. With over 10 million members in 130 countries, and a website operating in English, French and German, the online community has lobbied against giants like Nestlé, whose Ivory Coast cocoa plantations have been implicated in child slavery allegations; and PepsiCo, whose palm oil production is promoting rainforest destruction, species extinction and unethical labour practise. A spoof on PepsiCo’s Doritos commercial clocked over 20 million views and brought the company back to the negotiating table. SumOfUs is the vision of 35-year-old AustralianAmerican activist Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, a summa cum laude Phi Beta Kappa graduate who previously worked for Avaaz. She operates from the premise that: “we own the corporations that are causing all these problems. They rely on us to buy their products. They need us to continue to elect governments that let them get away with murder.” In 2015 alone, SumOfUs took more than 17 million actions. Current targets include Turing Pharmaceuticals, for jacking up the price of an affordable AIDS drug, and global accounting firm KPMG, for helping wealthy clients dodge taxes.

SumOfUs sources 85 per cent of its $4.7 million budget from members, with the rest coming from charitable trust grants and not a penny from commerce. “For us, it means that no corporate target is off limits if they’re behaving badly,” says fundraising director, Jon Lloyd. “SumOfUs and Avaaz are perfect examples of ‘networked nonprofits’,” says online fundraising expert Beth Kanter. “They have succeeded through mastering the art of messaging to younger audiences and driving them to donate via social media. And they have avoided the trap of big donors and big donations – the subtle strings attached to large grants governing what they can and cannot do with the money.” Both organisations started out as online petition networks. Both have extended their remit beyond mere ‘clicktivism’ – the accusation that they encourage ‘couch potato activism’. They welcome ideas and input from members. But campaigns have to ‘fly’, which means the causes they fund aren’t always those they most passionately believe in. “Members are our bosses,” says Avaaz’s Chief Operating Officer, Heather Reddick. “We have to bring them great ideas to fund. If we don’t, the community will let us know, and we won’t run the campaign or the fundraiser.” Avaaz sends tester emails to a random 10,000 members based on the kind of algorithms Google uses. Any with an open rate of under 10 per cent are discarded. At least two in five must elicit a click-through to the website and encourage more than 80 per cent to sign the petition.

SUMOFUS BUGS THE BUNNY TORTURERS Fur flew in 2013 when outraged SumOfUs supporters campaigned to stop Spanish clothing giant Inditex from supporting the torture of angora rabbits. Styling themselves the Bunny Warriors, they video-bombed social media networks with horrific secret footage filmed in Chinese factories by animal rights group PETA, depicting workers ripping out fur from the bodies of screaming rabbits. Harvesting angora fur humanely takes two-weeks of gently removing loose hair. In China, which produces 90 per cent of the world’s angora and has no penalties for abuse, it takes a few violent minutes. More than 295,000 signed a SumOfUs petition demanding that Zara halt production and distribution of angora fashion or face a boycott of their stores. Inditex agreed to stop placing orders until its angora farms comply with its selfprofessed ‘zero tolerance’ to animal cruelty.

A SHOE-IN When their Paris march was banned, 10,000 climate change protestors substituted their footwear

OUTED Wanted posters in Paris hold climate change deniers to account

“We’re like a laboratory for virality – for every campaign, we test perhaps 20 different versions to see what people want,” says UK Media Director Sam Barratt. “Changing the meme at the top, or the photograph, massively affects the number of clicks. People think we just chuck it out there, but there’s a huge amount of data sophistry in how we design the campaigns.” Both organisations have been accused of overstating their victories on occasions but Avaaz’s founder argues that its work has had comprehensive effects far beyond cyberspace. For evidence, he points to the Defeat the Murdock Mafia campaign. “Our activism played a critical role in delaying the BSkyB merger deal until the phone hacking scandal was able to kill it. The public outcry, fanned by an Avaaz petition signed by 150,000 Brits in less than two days, persuaded MPs to vote down Murdoch’s deal in the House of Commons, then launch a major inquiry into Britain’s media ethics.” Cynics who believe there’s only a finite amount of charity to go round say these new website warriors are a flash in the digital pan and add that online activism’s success has come at the expense of falling revenues for traditional NGOs. However, given the scale of money being raised directly

from young, idealistic tech-savvy donors, this new model is looking like a game-changer for non-profit fundraising, and there’s growing acceptance that Avaaz and SumOfUs are onto something. Big corporations like Virgin America and more traditional activist groups like Amnesty International and the Humane Society pay the forprofit petition site Change.org to host and promote their own campaigns. And cyberspace is hosting an expanding constellation of activist communities, among them 350.org (climate change), CitizenGo (Christian ethics) and 38 Degrees, co-started by the husband of Body Shop’s campaigning founder, Anita Roddick, in her memory. Plus, as Avaaz says on its website: ‘Our movement has been targeted by terrorists, sued by mega-corporations and smeared by media barons. We’re banned from Saudi Arabia to China, our staff are detained from Egypt to Palestine and our site is cyber-attacked virtually every single day… and that’s how we know we’re doing something right.’ As millennials mature and become an increasingly important donor base, cause-based crowd funding looks set to flourish, freeing nonprofits to change the world in even edgier ways, just as their ‘citizen bosses’ like it.

Avaaz’s UK Media Director inside a Spitting Image caricature of Rupert Murdoch during its campaign against the BSkyB merger

THE MOTHER OF ALL MARCHES The 2015 Paris Climate Accord is Avaaz’s ‘proudest achievement yet’. Negotiated between 195 countries and hailed as a major step towards turning down global warming, it was the climax to the largest coordinated climate change action in history – an 18-month campaign that saw over 1.5 million people march in 175 countries. Avaaz raised most of the funds, planned the logistics with environmental group 350.org and organised 45 actions during the 14-day UN summit, including: ZZ SCREENING PROTEST VIDEOS OUTSIDE THE TALKS. A documentary featuring survivors of 2015’s Chennai flood disaster was instrumental in U-turning India’s opposition. ZZ PLASTERING PARIS WITH WANTED POSTERS OF THE WORST CLIMATE CHANGE DENIERS, leading the lobbyist for the world’s largest mining company to withdraw from the talks. ZZ CREATING THE PARIS SHOE INSTALLATION – an emergency Plan B when the November 13 terrorist attacks put paid to the march planned for the eve of the summit. In a symbolic gesture that went viral globally, 10,000 marchers left their shoes in the Place de la Republique. The Pope, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and fashion designer Vivien Westwood also donated footwear. “Just 18 months before Paris, expectations were depressingly rock bottom,” says Avaaz. “Leaders actually told us there was no public and political will to act. We decided we had to show them they were wrong, and wow did it work.” The online community received high praise from the head of the UN climate talks, Christiana Figueres. “Avaaz has been fundamental to mobilising broad support for climate action. Thank you Avaaz, you are music!” e

p THE FOCUS people

There is something about cultural icons like David Bowie, Kurt Cobain or Jim Morrison that beckon us to hold them close to our hearts. Most of these musical and artistic geniuses had one thing in common: independence; the desire to rebel and break out of the moulds that others had cast before them. British artist Ed Chapman, who spends his time between the UK and his home in Álora, does exactly the opposite, capturing their essence and locking them into his soulful mosaics, each of which can be contemplated for hours.

WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ED CHAPMAN

I

t’s all in the eyes with these mosaics; they express the charisma, magic and (in some cases) sadness of the celebrities represented. The works are painstaking, taking various weeks to complete. Ed personally cuts all tiles and vinyl to his desired shape by hand, stacking the ultra thin vinyl in layers for an even finish. Ed’s tiles are purchased in size L – measuring around 20cm2 – “I just break them up and sometimes, I get lucky and the pieces are just the right shape; at other times I have to cut away until I obtain the right piece.” When asked how he came upon this fascinating art form, Ed answers that his interest in art as a whole, stems from way back. “Both my parents were trained in art school in Liverpool and they were always drawing, so I thought

that was just natural, in the same way someone who grew up in a tennis family would naturally start playing the sport early. We grew up with all the materials we needed – paints, easels… in fact, I still have my mother’s easel today and it’s at least 50 years old.” The idea to create mosaic art, came a little later: “Around 20 years ago, my brother had a school project and I thought, ‘I’d like to have a go’. I made a portrait of Kurt Cobain using magazine paper instead of paint and I was quite pleased with the result. It wasn’t perfect, but I grew fascinated by the medium – by the idea that you could make a recognisable subject from ordinary materials. I carried on producing works in paper for around four years, then started experimenting with tiles and other materials.”

Once Ed had honed his technique to perfection, he began to think commercially: “At that time nobody was selling portraits of icons. I started to do so in the late 1990s and by 2002, the interest in my art began to grow.” Today, Ed sells his work in Soho (London), and much of his work is also commissioned. The idea to work in vinyl, in fact, came from a commission. “I had always thought it would be a good idea to create a portrait of a famous musician using vinyl, but never did so until someone commissioned one. I have completed quite a few since then and from next year onwards I will be using only vinyl for my portraits of musicians.” Not content with portraiture, Ed has also completed everything from book covers to book tables: “I recently completed a book table bearing the

cover of George Orwell’s 1984.” Thus far, Ed has completely covered his surface in tiles and/or vinyl, but he is currently interested in ‘emptiness’ as well. “In the future I will be leaving a few spaces blank; it makes for a more interesting look and one that hasn’t been done before.” Ed is currently working on commissions but in the future, the slate is clean: “I could work on a mosaic of Muhammad Ali, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, maybe John Lennon or Che Guevara…” Cleary, the artist is drawn to those who share his passion for creativity. “I admire those who inspire through music, sport or art.” Indeed, inspiration is they key behind the legends we build and venerate throughout history.

This luxurious new development near Estepona derives its name from its beachfront location, but it is certainly also edgy in terms of concept and design. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF GILMAR

Life on the

THE EDGE

of the Sea The developers, commercial agents and the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano

A

mong the many exciting new developments being created in the greater Marbella – Estepona area, The Edge catches the eye for its flowing contemporary design and beachfront position. As we all know, the best spots tend be taken first, so with the majority of prime frontline beach locations long since occupied, it is a rare thing indeed to see a new beach development taking shape. Add the new Ley de Costas, which restricts construction near the sea, and those sites suitable for development become few and far between. Kronos Homes must therefore have known that they were on to a good thing with The Edge, a hectare of premium beach-fronting land that offers direct access to a sandy beach amid those hotly desired views across the Mediterranean Sea.

AVANT-GARDE DESIGN IN A PRIME LOCATION Such a special location deserves more than a conventional development, even a modern one, so the developers set out to create something special that would be truly worthy of this beautiful seaside spot. For this they enlisted the help of Rafael de la Hoz, for in an age of design, the creative

vision of a gifted architect is of prime importance. He too sensed how special this location was and wished to design a luxury complex that reflects this. “Too often the projects being built today have lost the ability to express their setting through design,” says the architect, who instead was inspired by the rippling waves to pen the curved forms

of The Edge. Its railings, terraces, wooden decks and fabric awnings further evoke the sense of the sea and bring subtle nautical themes into the architectural design of the 68 luxurious apartments and penthouses. “From the outset, the concept behind The Edge was to build not only on the strength of the location but to take development in the area to new heights of design, sophistication and lifestyle setting,” says Marco Fernandez Wise of Gilmar, the commercial agent chosen to represent and promote this rather unique development, which in addition to the 2, 3 and 4-bedroom apartments and 3-bedroom penthouses also features two 4-bedroom beach villas.

AN OPEN CONCEPT The gently sweeping curvature of the low-rise apartment buildings offers a dual focal point. The primary one is unmistakably the sea that stretches out before you. By grouping the properties together in a curved line tracing the large central landscape, the designers have not only ensured unhindered views for all the properties but also created an internal oasis of manicured lawns and planted areas, water features, elegantly lit pathways and large lagoon-style swimming pools complete with cascading levels. The latter add to the impact of the

sea by layering a series of successive horizon points that can be enjoyed from the stylish pool decks, the garden, the apartments’ terraces and from within the water itself. The overall effect is an open perspective of greenery accented by the blue of the pools, sea and sky. In other words, a most inspiring living environment enhanced by a residents-only indoor pool, spa and gym that converts your home setting into a deluxe resort to be enjoyed throughout the year.

LIFESTYLE DESIGN Ranging from two to four bedrooms,

the apartments not surprisingly feature panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows throughout that bring in the sea views. The spacious open-plan living room is the heart of the home, connecting with a wooden-decked terrace whose sea views could indeed have you thinking you’re on an ocean liner. In harmony with the philosophy of optimising the location and doing it proud, the materials used are of the highest standard, making this a development in the upper echelons of new Marbella construction. Naturally this applies even more to the penthouses, whose expansive

terraces add living space just as the ground floor garden apartments extend their living space outwards. The penthouses do this upwards, with panoramic terraces that becomes glamorous lifestyle areas complete with chill-out lounges, private pools and bars. Even more exclusive are the two villas. Built right at the beachfront, they offer optimal privacy and exclusivity amid fantastic front line beach views, something that is hard to come by these days. In addition to a superlative list of luxuries, including private garages, these unique villas also benefit from the maintenance, concierge and amenities of the gated complex, yet are secluded and not overlooked. The double-height ceilings add to the majesty of the sea views that sweep through the spacious living areas. Open the sliding door and the sounds of the sea add further impact to the private terrace and swimming pool. In deviating from the conventional, The Edge is a uniquely appealing new exclusive development that does its prime location proud and creates a privileged lifestyle setting. i www.gilmar.es

RIBA AWARDS 2016

Film has the Oscars, literature the Pulitzer Prize, but one of the leading international awards recognising the most inspiring architectural work around the globe is the annual RIBA Award.

Celebrating the Best in Design

E

ach year the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awards a series of highly prestigious prizes to those projects that represent not just excellence in architectural design and execution, but also vision, innovation and a fresh approach to the problems of space, budget, form and functionality that architects have to find solutions for. In scouring the world for suitably inspiring projects to shortlist, RIBA does not discriminate on the basis of scale, spend or usage, allowing itself to focus purely on the strength of concept, design and the application thereof. The result is an annual shortlist that can include anything from whole new planned cities and the kind of big-budget glory projects that garner a lot of attention internationally, to the smallest, humblest projects – as long as the concept is inspiring and the design illuminating, even a local venture can be a potential winner. This approach levels the playing field greatly and adds to the appeal of the RIBA Prize, which in recent years has been won both by architectural giants such as Norman Foster, David Chipperfield, Herzog & de Meuron and Zaha Hadid and by smaller outfits like UNStudio in Holland, Tabanlioglu Architects in Turkey and EMBT from Barcelona.

WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF RIBA

2016 RIBA AWARDS For half a century now RIBA has been recognising excellence in the field of architecture both within the UK and around the world. In that time it has developed a very clear methodology, encapsulated in the organisation’s own words: “Successful projects reflect changes and innovations in architecture, but at their core display a commitment to designing and developing buildings and spaces for the improvement and enhancement of people’s lives.” It’s the kind of lofty ideal we almost take for granted, a bit like a Hippocratic Oath for architects, but one which in reality is often sacrificed at the altar of commercial interests, budgets and personal egos. Yes, architects can be vainglorious, driven by the desire to convert each project into a monument to their own genius. Such tendencies are perhaps most prevalent when it comes to grand public projects, but ultimately it is through the many commercial and residential projects that most potential damage is done to the quality of our living environment, both on a practical and on an aesthetic level. Placing the emphasis on the important human and social role of architecture, and its disciples, is therefore both refreshing and important, since this is a field whose creations intensely affect our physical environment and become part of the fabric of our communities. The finest architecture, therefore, not

only fulfils a practical need with aplomb and looks great doing so, but it also somehow beautifies its surroundings to become an enrichment to those who use it and gaze upon it in their everyday lives. We have many examples of whole districts and cities that have been uplifted by a single iconic building that might have led to an avalanche of urban gentrification and/or rejuvenation, so those projects that make the final cut for the RIBA Awards have been carefully considered on many levels.

Arquipélago Contemporary Arts Centre, Azores Located on the island of Sâo Miguel, in the Atlantic island group of the Azores, Arquipélago is the work of Portuguese architects Joâo Mendes Ribeiro + Menos é Mais Arquitectos. The skill of the designers is reflected in the sensitive way in which they have blended a new building with an old alcohol and tobacco factory, thereby merging the two to great effect and giving the historic building a new lease of life. The dramatic, heavy almost sombre tone of the complex fits in with the avant garde feel of a contemporary art museum while also responding to the grey overtones of the granite and the leaden Atlantic skies in a world surrounded by grey seas, where the warmth of the interior lighting is only further enhanced.

Heydar Aliyev Center, BakĂş Buoyed by oil wealth, the Azeri capital is becoming known for eye-catching architecture, and the new Heydar Aliyev Center is adding another to the BakĂş skyline. Designed by none other than the late Zaha Hadid, it is a 57,500m2 complex with the flowing, organic shapes the Iraqi-British architect is famous for. As was very much the intention, this cultural centre is nothing short of a 21st century landmark, but its rolling lines are not just for show; they continue indoors, where the building that at times appears to have melted around you draws one in as into a snail shell. In this, acoustics, light and space are altered, and a very special inner flow created that is at once expansive and intimate. The perspectives thus created are quite mesmerising.

Museo Jumex, Mexico City If ever a building provided the canvas upon which art could be displayed it is the Museo Jumex in Mexico’s sprawling capital. Working together with the Taller Abierto de Arquitectura y Urbanismo (TAAU), David Chipperfield Architects have created a sophisticated temple to the arts for the Fundación Jumex. The refined contemporary exterior sets the tone for interior display spaces that mould light, space and indeed shape to optimally present the exhibitions they contain. The result is an almost vacuum in which art is put on a 3D pedestal complete with rooms for live performances and interaction. A jewel within Mexico City’s modern district, the Museo Jumex is a fine example of impressive modern architecture that somehow also beautifies and humanises its surroundings.

Stormen Concert Hall, Bodo London-based DRDH Architects are responsible for the design of the Stormen Concert Hall, Theatre and Public Library in Bodo, Norway. They were shortlisted because you sense they understood the essence of this place in the almost arctic reaches of the Nordland region. The multifaceted cultural centre fits right into its location by the marina, celebrating Norway’s indelible link to the sea as it soaks up the scant Nordic sunlight and reflects it across this spacious but welcoming building. Large windows are employed for this task – as well as offering views across the marina and bay – while richly textured wood does its traditional job of warming up the place. In bringing modern and traditional elements together with a true sense for proportion, DRDH Architects have harmonised the many different functions of this complex and made it blend seemlessly with the community it serves.

The Ring of Remembrance, Ablain-Saint-Nazaire Honouring the fallen in a suitably meaningful way is a delicate task, but the Agence d’architecture Philippe Prost (AAPP) has done it proud with the powerfully evocative Ring of Remembrance outside the village of Ablain-SaintNazaire. Merging in beautifully with the gorgeous countryside, the complex recalls the 580,000 men who fell in this part of Northern France during WWI. What’s more, Philippe Prost has succeeded in conveying the staggering scale without ever dehumanising the experience. In fact, it feels as much a place that remembers each individual soldier as it does an entire generation that fell here. As with all good concepts, the design is simple but all the more effective for this, interacting with light, nature and the heavens above to provide a very fitting memorial for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC), Lima

The UTEC project is surprising on several levels. At first glance the brief to create a university campus that offers higher education opportunities for less advantaged Peruvians is a classic commission to design a public building complex in a tradition that goes back to the 1950s. The style could vary greatly but the concept was pretty set, until Grafton Architects came along. This all-female Irish team began to look at it from a different perspective, taking on board a budget that had to stretch as far as possible and the intended purpose of widening the range of educated young Peruvians to help develop the economy and increase social mobility. The result is not a girly take on architecture but a rather industrial looking structure whose irregular shapes and slanted stance makes some think of a football ground while others have described it as ‘a modern day Machu Picchu’. Function definitely overrides form in this somewhat utilitarian complex that, however, captures the intended spirit just as it conjures up the ghosts of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. A man-made, sorry, woman-made cliff that replicates the local topography, the UTEC campus interacts both with its natural environment and the Lima skyline. Above all, it provides a living, functional space for thousands of young students whose needs are not met by self-serving pompous public architecture but by an optimal range of facilities and a campus where the student body can form a community of its own. One senses that for Grafton Architects the main client was not the public authority but the students and lecturers themselves. e

TOP 5

Celebrity make-up and skin care lines have truly come a long way since the 1990s and early 2000s, when famous models and actors lent little more to the trade than their image. These days, being a celebrity has additional perks; big companies (think MAC, Sephora or Estée Lauder) are looking for more than just ‘ambassadors’; they are relying on celebrity know-how to design products that are on the cusp of all things trendy and cool. These are just a few of the best celebrity beauty lines on the market:

Celebrity Beauty Lines

Z JESSICA ALBA She is mainly known for her

stunning looks and for being an A-list Hollywood actor, but Jessica Alba is also the founder of a multimillion-dollar operation called The Honest Company. All her products are made with natural ingredients and are free of harmful compounds like parabens and phthalates. Jessica decided to found The Honest Co. when she first became a mum and was appalled by the harmful ingredients contained in everything from diapers to baby shampoo. Now, she also makes items for adults, as well as for the home (think home cleansers, detergents, etc.). Top items to purchase include the honest shampoo + body wash, which is super gentle and comes in three different fragrances: dreamy lavender, sweet orange vanilla and apricot kiss. Z KYLIE JENNER It’s one thing to be totally up to your ears with the Kardashian clan, but it’s another to be downright silly and pass up on the affordable yet longwearing products from Kylie Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics. Kylie first became known for her luscious lips (actually the product of lip injections, a fact the reality star took some time to admit). Her best product is undoubtedly her matte lip kits, comprising a pencil lip liner and matte liquid lipstick, and costing in the region of €26. She has since branched into

other lines, including the top-selling Kylie Kyshadow (comprising super-matte pressed powder eyeshadow palettes) and her Kylie Kyliner kits (comprising a pencil eyeliner, crème gel eyeliner and angled synthetic branch). Z KENDALL JENNER Kylie’s older sis is not just one of the world’s hottest catwalk and editorial supermodels; she is also a big fan of make-up and recently worked with Estée Lauder on The Estée Edit: a stunning palette containing matte and shiny shades alike. Think super sparkly silver and gold, smooth ochre and ultra-matte black. The palette has been a big seller for Estée Lauder, since it contains a plethora of shades and can be used during the day and night time alike. Z DEMI LOVATO She is a goddess on Twitter and Instagram and also one of America’s brightest, bubbliest singers. She first came to our screens as a Disney star but has since shed her ‘goody two shoes’ image and likes to break new ground both in her music and in fashion. She recently designed New York Color Lovatics by Demi Lip & Cheek Tint: a fantastic product that serves as blusher and lip gloss all in one. The product comes in various shades, from natural to dramatic so make sure to pick one out for day and one for night!

Z KAT VON D Katherine von Drachenberg, known

simply as Kat von D, is most famous for two things: being an amazing tattoo artist, and having been the partner of reality show star, Jesse James, who in turn was once married to Sandra Bullock. Kat is a genius at inking beautiful portraits and symbols on skin, but her luminescent beauty has attracted the attention of photographers and fashion designers world-round and she has also been a model, as well as the star of her own reality TV show, LA Ink. In 2008, she took a brave leap: launching her own cosmetics line: Kat von D Beauty. Says Kat, “If you had asked me when I was a child, running around barefoot in Mexico with dirt under my fingernails and frogs in my pockets, if I could have foreseen this wild makeup adventure becoming a reality, I probably would have laughed in your face in disbelief! When Sephora approached me about creating a makeup line back in 2008, my goal was to come up with the four most perfect shades of red lipstick. Fast-forward to today… Kat Von D Beauty has grown into such a big and beautiful monster that it’s easy to lose count of the shade range now!” Kat von D is most famed for creating luxurious matte products – everything from foundation to concealer and eyeshadow. We recommend her Lock It Concealer, Shade + Light Face Contour Palette, and Lock It Foundation. These products are designed to last for 24 hours and leave a pure matte finish. e

INTIMATE AND PERSONAL

Z Before becoming a plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon, Dr Valdés wanted to be an architect. His mother, who loved painting, made him study medicine, but the heart of an artist still beats within him and this shows in his expert handling of the scalpel. Z Married to a Spanish doctor and the father of five adolescent children, his profession is not spoken of at home; instead conversations focus on art, literature, philosophy… His profession takes him between Chile, where he has the country’s leading cosmetic surgery clinic in Santiago, and Spain, where he operates in the best clinics of Madrid, Barcelona and Marbella. Z His dream is to create a plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery school in which to teach the true values of the profession. Z While he is discreet about his work, he is a great conversationalist and collaborates with hospitals in which he operates on people with low incomes in order to improve their self-esteem and quality of life. Z One of his upcoming projects is to open a luxury beauty clinic in San Lorenzo del Escorial (Madrid province), in which to offer an exclusive setting for procedures and the post-operative recovery period.

PROFESSIONAL TRAJECTORY

Bachelor of Medicine and Doctor of Surgery from Santiago de Chile University; Specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Rio de Janeiro) and in Plastic Surgery from the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery; Master in Surgery from Valencia University and Master in Cosmetic Medicine from the Rey Juan Carlos I University. The professional trajectory of Doctor Hector Valdés has been influenced from the outset by his love of painting and sculpture. That is why his hands seek to reflect beauty and harmony in each procedure he carries out.

“Everyone is beautiful and attractive, it is just that some don’t know how to or don’t want to make the best of themselves”

HECTOR VALDÉS

The Artist Behind The Scalpel

As a lover of harmony in the most holistic sense of the word, and after more than 30 years experience in his career as a plastic and cosmetic surgeon, Dr Hector Valdés’ scalpel has become highly respected in both Chile and Spain. Both famous and anonymous faces and bodies have been transformed by his expert hands, with a simple premise: to personalise beauty, which is neither unique nor standardised.

T

he professional trajectory of Dr Hector Valdés has always been influenced by his love of painting and sculpture. That is why his hands seek to reflect beauty and harmony in each of the procedures he carries out. He works quietly and gently, guided by an artistic sensitivity that has produced results easily observed in the satisfaction of the thousands of patients throughout the world who have trusted in him to beautify their faces and bodies during his 30-year career. He is also the author of various books about plastic and cosmetic surgery, conceived from a unique and original perspective, in which his love for art and the harmony of shapes is evident. IS THE SCALPEL THE PANACAEA FOR PRESERVING YOUTH AND BEAUTY? Stopping the passage of time has been something man has yearned for over the centuries. The different manifestations of art, especially in sculpture, have reflected the desire to achieve harmony of shape and preserve youth. However, I see plastic and cosmetic surgery not as a resource for preserving youth, but as

an amazing tool for correcting small imperfections and achieving great things. That’s why I won’t operate on just anyone, but on those who I think that my work, which is my art, will add something to. If it is a person who is fine just as they are, or who is seeking through surgery something that the operating theatre is unable to resolve, I will say no. And I am wellknown for saying no to patients who come to my office asking for what is cosmetically impossible and beyond balance and harmony.” CAN GREAT RESULTS BE ACHIEVED WITH SMALL TWEAKS? Of course, what’s more, as I mentioned before, with minimal retouches in the operating theatre, great results can be achieved. Without dramatic changes. Without exaggeration. FOR EXAMPLE? Sometimes, correcting a slight excess of skin on the eyelids (blepharoplasty), misplaced jowls, an asymmetrical or excessively low bust, a flaccid tummy with stretch marks from pregnancy, naughty love handles or getting back a waist

or hips that had lost their curves, is enough to improve a person’s image. My idea of plastic surgery is not to go over the top with the scalpel, but to make changes that are as subtle as possible, but which give my patients a boost of security and self-confidence.

SPECIAL SERVICES

Through Maren Muller, the ‘Brand Ambassador’ for Dr Hector Valdés in Spain, a luxury package can be obtained for patients from all over the world who wish to undergo surgery in Marbella. The package includes all the services needed to make sure that the procedure and the post-operative period become a satisfying and gratifying experience: transport from the airport to the outstanding Marbella clinic (HC Marbella International Hospital), accommodation and post-operative stay in an exclusive Marbella hotel, personalised daily care from nursing staff and anything else that the patient may need.

It will stay in place for hours and provide a silky smooth finish. 4 – FAKE UP BY BENEFIT: An ideal choice for those with dry skin. The funky looking stick comprises a tube that winds up to reveal a concealer and moisturising stick all in one. Each kit is divided into two: the right side contains a darker corrector (to really target darkness) and a lighter corrector, which should blend in well with your chosen foundation colour. THE FEATURES THAT MAKE

MEN AND WOMEN Attractive WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

The health and beauty industry is big business, with cosmetics and skincare companies promising everything from eternal youth to a change in facial structure, all in the name of attracting the object of our desire. Dating App, Shakn, recently conducted a survey into the features that men and women find most attractive and the results are as follows: THE FEATURES WE MOST APPRECIATE IN MEN INCLUDE: Z SYMMETRY: Previous studies have

clearly shown that one of the most characteristic features of beautiful ‘faces’, is symmetry. Research reveals, for instance, that babies spend more time staring at pictures of symmetric people, than asymmetric ones. Moreover, when several faces are fused to create a composite (thus doing away with any existing asymmetry), judges deem the fused image more attractive than any of the individual ones. Z JAWLINE: You only need to think of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, to realise that most have one thing in common: a square jaw. Think Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood… an angular jaw is deemed to be more ‘manly’. Z CHEEKBONES: High, clearly defined cheekbones are ‘in’. Think Benedict Cumberbatch for the epitome of amazing cheekbones. Z FULL LIPS: Pouty lips have been ‘in’ among women for at least a decade but the trend is catching on when it comes to men, who are also deemed more attractive if they have fleshier kissers. Z HEIGHT: ‘Tall, dark and handsome’ is the classic description of a hot man, and while blonde and beautiful men also have their fans, there is no doubt that the sight of a tall man in a good suit is enough to make most admirers go ga-ga. Z SHOULDERS: Wide shoulders are appreciated as a sign of masculinity and virility. The classic ‘V’ shape, made famous by the earliest Tarzans to grace our screen (Johnny Weissmuller stands out in our memory), continues to fascinate and entice.

THE FEATURES WE MOST APPRECIATE IN WOMEN INCLUDE: Z LIPS: Full, pouty lips are one of

the first things people look at when ‘sizing up’ a woman. Lips should also be hydrated, so make sure you have a good lip gloss on you at all times. Z HAIR: God knows there are a plethora of cool shorter styles for women, but long, flowing hair is still considered the most desirable. As for colour, neither blonde nor brunette rates higher – rather, natural hair is preferred over coloured styles. Z EYES: Big eyes have always been considered a sign of beauty and they continue to mesmerise to this day. Z BREASTS: Full, perky breasts have been in vogue since time immemorial. However, bigger isn’t always better, it

seems; breasts should be proportionate in size to the rest of the body to be considered truly ‘beautiful’. Z SKIN: Bright, hydrated skin is a must for a face to be deemed beautiful and luckily, these days, there are many ways to obtain a youthful appearance – everything from serums to vitamin shots, Botox, etc. Laser treatments are also available to encourage skin to produce collagen, the very basis of beautiful skin. Rest, moisturisation and a healthy diet are vital if skin is to truly glow from within. The Shakn survey focussed on the physical, but what about personality? To each his own, they say, yet some characteristics that men and women

alike find attractive include: a gogetting personality (a person who has goals and strives to achieve them), a positive attitude, humour, honesty and personality (having one’s own, sometimes quirky interests – an undefinable factor that shows confidence in oneself and one’s tastes). Warmth (expressed through touch and frequent smiling) and positive conflict resolution skills are also vital. When we argue, it seems, we should avoid insulting, blaming and shaming. Rather, the focus should be on finding a solution to a problem and all problems should be tackled together – as a team!

AN HOUR A DAY OF EXERCISE Keeps Effects of Sedentary Lifestyle at Bay

COMPILED BY MARISA CUTILLAS

With scientists warning that spending over eight hours a day sitting can lead to everything from obesity to heart disease and early mortality, researchers at the University of Cambridge recently sought to discover exactly how much exercise we need to counteract the effects of the sedentary lifestyle. The scientists surveyed information obtained from over one million people, coming to the conclusion that one hour of moderate to intense activity every day, is required. In addition to exercising daily, try not to remain seated for many hours. Set an alarm on your desktop and, every hour or two, get up and move around – either perform calisthenics type exercises or run up and down the office stairs. Do anything to get your circulation going and after work, aim to hit the gym, go for a run or perform your favourite aerobic or dance routine at home!

THREE IN FIVE COUPLES Avoid Sex during Pregnancy

Over 50 Per Cent of People with Type II Diabetes

Sex Place, a boutique which boasts a staff of over 50 sexologists, recently published the results of their latest poll, which shows that three out of every five couples do not have sex during pregnancy, owing to a fear of losing the baby. In fact, say the experts, sex during pregnancy is important because it strengthens the intimacy of the couple, who can take advantage of their last few months ‘in peace’ prior to baby’s arrival. Some of the many reasons to continue having sex during pregnancy include: Z Sex improves our defences Z It improves mother’s (and baby’s) sleep Z It reduces the risk of preeclampsia Z It reduces labour pains Z It accelerates postpartum recovery

November 14 was World Diabetes Day and the Hospital Vithas Xanit recently did its share to combat this disease by holding free blood glucose tests at its installations in Benalmádena. The Xanit doctors warn that although over 14 per cent of the population have this disease, more than half of those who do, are totally unaware of the fact. Initially, Type II diabetes does not present any symptoms. It is therefore important for those at risk to be tested, so that an early diagnosis and treatment can be obtained. Persons with a higher risk of the illness include those who are overweight and obese, as well as those who have hypertension, a family history of diabetes or dyslipidemia.

DON’T KNOW IT

DEMENTIA NOW LEADING Cause of Death in England and Wales

The Office of National Statistics in the UK has reported that heart disease is no longer the leading cause of death in England and Wales. Dementia is the biggest killer, owing mainly to the rise in the number of elderly persons. People are living longer than before, and the number of deaths from other conditions has gone down. Additionally, doctors are more aware of the importance of diagnosing dementia early, so the disease is generally caught much earlier than it was in the past.

THE OASIS SPA AT THE DON CARLOS RESORT

t r A n a s a s s e n Well

WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE DON CARLOS RESORT

T

he Don Carlos Leisure Resort & Spa has always been known as one of Marbella’s leading fivestar hotels. Until now, it offered two different types of accommodation: rooms and suites at the Hotel itself, and luxury accommodation at the Don Carlos Deluxe Villas (of which there are a total of 24). Now, there is a third choice for guests after a bit of R ‘n R or those seeking to immerse themselves in a wellness experience: The Oasis by Don Carlos Resort, comprising a brand new building adjacent to the main hotel and featuring rooms and suites, as well as an impressive 1,600m2 spa. The Oasis boasts 35 rooms, suites and apartments, decorated in neutral tones and bearing natural materials. Cool beige and cream tones abound and furniture is inspired on classical pieces from the 1930s – 1950s. From an Oasis room, the view is incredible – floorto-ceiling windows invite a shock of blue into the space, giving the sensation that one is floating on the water. This room measures 40m2 and boasts a lovely 11m2 terrace, the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast while gazing out at the Mediterranean. The bathroom is luxurious, considering

this is the smallest room: there is a spacious double bath and sensation shower, with all amenities from the Spa range of Molton Brown. Suites are significantly larger, measuring 84m2 and boasting a spectacular 88m2 terrace. The interior design is marvelous, with pieces inspired on the work of Jean Prouvé and Charles Eames. Touches of colour (such as sky blue chairs) are married to coffee, wood and beige shades. All Suites have a dressing area, double shower with sensation effects and an independent bath. Finally there are the apartments – measuring a generous 75m2, with a 55m2 terrace. Once again, the furniture is inspired on the 1950s and natural fabric, ethnic inspiration and top quality materials abound. The accommodation blends seamlessly with the wellness philosophy of The Oasis, so much so that it undoubtedly serves as inspiration for individuals and couples who are burdened by stress and wish to take a short wellness break. After a wonderful massage, what could be better than heading for your luxurious room and enjoying a nap, followed by a walk by the sea

or a meal at one of Don Carlos’ many exquisite restaurants? The jewel of The Oasis is undoubtedly the Spa, which boasts an impressive circuit pool (with a bevy of massage jets, massage beds and Jacuzzi-style bubbling), a stunning Finnish sauna, steam rooms (one normal and one eucalyptus scented), sensation showers, an ice bucket shower, a flotarium, and various relaxation areas (one of which is outdoors, for those who wish to catch a few rays after a treatment or a dip in the pool). One of the most unique aspects of this spa, is that the ‘wet area’ (featuring the pool, showers, steam baths…) is on the top floor, which is flooded with natural light. It is truly a joy to enjoy a powerful jet massage in a sunlit room, overviewing the Don Carlos’ well manicured gardens. If you do visit The Oasis, by all means dip into the flotarium, which contains as much salt as the Dead Sea. Just a few minutes in this dense water is said to be equivalent to several hours of sleep, making it an ideal treatment for busy executives. Afterwards, enjoy a facial or body treatment from the

impressive treatment list, which includes a Dead Sea mud treatment, soothing massages, and two very technologically savvy treatments: the LPG Cellu M6 treatment, which eliminates fat, drains toxins and improves the appearance of cellulite, and Indiba (the absolute ‘it’ machine when it comes to health and beauty alike, since it stimulates cell renewal, making it ideal to tackle issues like ageing and sports injuries). Couples meanwhile, need to book the Couples Suite, the star treatment room boasting its very own Jacuzzi. No resort stay would be quite ideal without good food and once again, The Oasis does not disappoint. All dishes served here are seasonal and ecological. To sample the fare, pop in for their buffet breakfast, featuring a host of warm dishes, pastries, fresh fruit juices, etc. If you feel like you need guidance during your stay, count on the advice of dedicated counsellors, who will ensure that your experience is perfect, from the start to finish. g Avda. The racing was incredibly close, with its fair share of high speed side by side action, leaving every car with battle scars. The overall Champion (winning an incredible seven out of 10 races) was MRDC’s Peter Bowerman, originally from Chigwell Essex and MD of the successful Overseas Dream’ real estate agency in Marbella and La Cala de Mijas. TRAVEL TRENDS for a New Year

Travellers are always looking for something new. After all, travel is as much about adventure and excitement as it is about rest and relaxation, so here are the new travel trends to look out for in 2017. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

106 / JANUARY 2017 ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM

209 TrI.indd 106

14/12/2016 11:12

T

he traveller is a curious creature, always on the lookout for a new place or experience to discover, and different ways to do it. In this way he or she helps to create new trends, make ‘unexplored’ areas popular or see old favourites from a fresh perspective. The simple ‘bucket and spade’ holiday that was once the norm has been superseded by trendy hotels, party packages, themed holidays and adventure explorations just as modern technology once made us demand TV and air conditioning in our rooms, and now has us ranting if there isn’t a good Wi-Fi connection available. We want to see and explore more of the world and enjoy ‘authentic’ experiences, but we’re also increasingly demanding of luxury, style, branding, convenience, speed, efficiency, value for money and cuisine. Not so long ago, travellers heaved a sigh of relief if the bathroom worked and the room was clean, but now many also want good dining options with vegetarian, vegan and dietary choices. We want to be connected, yet travel to the far ends of the world to disconnect ourselves from work and the drag of everyday. Quite frankly, you don’t envy the tourist industry that has to cater to such wide-ranging requirements anno 2017.

Unplugged A lot of people travel to unwind. It can be overstated occasionally, but these are hectic times in which life just seems to be speeding up and it can be very hard to get away from the madding crowd – especially if you can be traced in the remotest places by email, WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, LinkedIn and the mobile, among others. It can’t be denied then that it’s a sign of the times that a growing number of people just want to escape the blurred lines between work, play and social chatter that have become our lives – if only for a week or two. Where do they go to achieve this? As I mentioned before, you can run but you can’t hide from the Big Brother reach of modern communications. Of course, if you’re up the creek without a paddle (literally) your mobile connection will probably fail, but for the rest, most of us are not capable of switching it off, so many choose to either venture into wildernesses without Wi-Fi connection, such as rugged mountain ranges and jungles, or head for remote country hotels that actually brag about not having Wi-Fi. Look them up, if you dare!

It can be hard to disconnect on holiday

Imagine racing around the exotic Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi

Adventure A lot of today’s travellers want to explore and experience

Another thing that a growing number of travellers want is adventure, or at the very least a themed holiday that ties in with their interests and passions. One man’s passion is another’s obsession, but that aside the travel industry has not been slow to respond to this varied demand for adventure, extreme sports and diversely themed vacations. Millennials, in particular, are keen on this kind of holiday experience, and as they are the voice of the future, the industry responds in kind with a wide range of adventure options. It’s a growing market, to be sure, and one that has moved on from mere adventure sports such as wild water rafting, bungee jumping and sky diving to more unusual encounters such as cage diving, exploring the breeding grounds of sharks in Malaysia or racing at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. But adventure travellers are adrenaline junkies and they want something new all the time. The current trend is ‘living an experience’ such as hiking with donkeys through the roof of the world, going on a quest in a faraway land, and being taught survival skills in a hostile environment such as the Arctic. This lust for adventure is turning some people’s idea of a holiday into something akin to a boot camp with US Marines – another experience that would no doubt go down well.

Behavior Correction

This service is intended for dogs with behavioural issues that require special monitoring therapy. We have extensive experience in this field. We treat problems with aggression, fear and anxiety using natural methods without the use of collars or punishment. We help the dog deal with their problems in a gradual and positive way using assimilated therapy that respects their autonomy and offers effective, safe and long term results. Once the animal's problems are solved, we set some guidelines so that the owner knows how to guide their pet independently.

Canine School Dogs need to be exercised, educated and socialised for good physical and mental health. We work through a rational method based on exercise, education and affection.

Psychologist, Educator A good education promotes quality of life for the animal. It is also very important to be part P and Dog Trainer of a herd or a balanced social group. We carry out training at different levels, in addition to practicing different canine sports.

Private lessons for pets and owners These personal workouts are intended for both dog and owner. They can be conducted in the dog's own environment including the home and exercise locations.

Though it isn’t a new destination, Namibia has a lot of adventure to offer

Discovering New Places

Travellers are the kind of people that put new places on the map. First it was the likes of Thailand and Bali, then Costa Rica and the UAE, and now the search is for more untouched, unexplored areas of the world. In their desire for the kind of fresh, authentic experiences that travellers from an earlier era took for granted, today’s intrepid explorer is venturing further and further across the globe. With China, India, Peru, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Moroccan Sahara ticked off, we’re having to steer ever further off the beaten track. Many of the countries you’d recommend, like Madagascar and Guatemala, are not safe to go to, so you’ll have to increasingly test your cultural and comfort zone mettle when thinking of hitting places like Mongolia, Laos, Belize and Patagonia in the Antarctic reaches of Argentina. Maybe watch the Northern Lights at the Polar tip of Norway, book a ship to Svalbard, head for Greenland or see if you can make it to the Kamchatka Peninsula, but you could also try the very pretty Black Sea resort of Batumi in Georgia or explore surfing and a rising cuisine reputation in Peru. Discovering something truly new is getting harder but there are still plenty of authentic firsts to experience if you’re a little creative.

Stay Close and Connected

The opposite to travelling to the far reaches of the earth is also a popular emerging trend among people who’d like to rely less on one or two big ticket holidays and get away a little more frequently – even if this means staying a little closer to home. For those who don’t have a weekend escape or a second home in Marbella this can mean booking into a bed and breakfast, a spa hotel or renting one of the growing range of cool country properties in spectacular natural settings. Such accommodation, which can range from yurts and charmingly decorated wagons, to cosy log cabins, cottages, tree houses and also architecturally stunning ‘nature homes’, can be found across most of Europe in panoramic seaside, forest, mountain, rural and even marsh or moor settings. Staycations offer a great way to relax and disconnect while still being available to put out fires at work and go for long walks, enjoy local scenery, sights and activities, and generally get to know your own hinterland a little better. For many, this means staying away from popular seaside tourist spots and turning their attention to rugged coastal stretches, remote mountain ranges, nature reserves and also agricultural heartlands. You’d be amazed how much you can see, learn and experience relatively close to home, and the great thing about a vacation close to home is that you can repeat it more frequently, alternating recharging relaxation with time for friends and family – perhaps even finding that perfect spot where you can enjoy a winter wonderland like in the movies. When it comes to travel, life’s what you make it, so celebrate it! e

nrique Mandl, the new General Manager of luxury resort hotel, El Lodge, is from Austria which pretty much guarantees that he knows just about everything there is to know about what makes a great skiing experience. On our meeting, he tells me about the recent re-launch of El Lodge, the Marbella Club Group’s stylish five-star retreat in the mountains of Sierra Nevada. The resort, a

Z STYLISH, COSY ACCOMMODATION: There are only 20 rooms, 12 of which are suites. Enjoy a hearty breakfast buffet with a host of decadent treats as well as healthy options, home made pastry, artisan cheese platters, smoked salmon, fresh fruit, and hot dishes made to order. Game and fondue feature prominently on the lunch and dinner menus, as well as freshly grilled fish and Riofrio caviar (produced close to Sierra Nevada, this is the first-ever certified organic caviar in the world). If gourmet dining is your thing, check out their Christmas Eve and Day and New Year’s Menus, featuring mouthwatering caviar, fish and meat delights. Z THE SUN DECK: Boost your Vitamin D levels by catching the rays on The Sun Deck, the only restaurant in Pradollano offering direct access to the slopes. Sip on hot wine or enjoy a tranquil lunch (tucking into Mediterranean cuisine, pasta and barbecued dishes) before heading out again to make the most of the afternoon. Z THE LOUNGE: After dinner, the

rooms are bigger and the entire resort has been built in Finnish wood, which is soft but stable and makes for a stylish, warm atmosphere.” El Lodge has thus far received rave reviews, having been a top family destination by Conde Naste and considered the top five star hotel on booking.com. Its success rests on established pillars, which include:

perfect spot to enjoy a glass of brandy or play pool is surely The Lounge, with its pony skin chairs, traditional Chesterfields and elegant pool tables. If cocktails are your thing, you won’t be disappointed; an extensive list of creations is available upon request. Z THE BAR: Sip on a Moscow Mule or Bloody Mary while you meet and greet fellow skiers at The Bar. Z THE SPA AND FITNESS AREA: Sooth your tired muscles at the indoor heated pool, enjoying a massage from the powerful underwater jets, or while your cares away at the sauna or Turkish bath. Those up for some serious pampering can have a massage or manicure/pedicure to prepare them for a full night’s partying. Those who are more into fitness, meanwhile, can work out on the very best equipment at the Fitness Centre. Z KID’S CLUB: The Kid’s Club, for children aged up to 14, is the ideal way for parents to enjoy the top powder

while their children stay busy and entertained at one of the most beautiful areas for children on the Coast. A plethora of wooden features is married to top technology (Wii, PlayStation, Xbox, films) so every child will find their perfect match. Enrique hopes that El Lodge will give Sierra Nevada the prominence it deserves, attracting high-end skiers from Europe and further afield. “We hope to bring a new confidence to Sierra Nevada, to attract more luxury products and services. Thus far, we have enjoyed great success, with many repeat customers and great feedback from clients.” When style is married to service, you can’t go wrong, especially when you throw in the beauty of the snowy mountains, the adrenalin rush that only skiing can provide, and the pleasure of enjoying a memorable holiday in good company. i www.ellodge.com

A

restaurant is somehow a reflection of the heart and soul of its owner and when the latter has a true calling for service and a love of fine food, this quality is most evident – as it is at Casamono, dreamchild of the talented Clement Mokeddel, who has been at the helm of this culinary haven of cool, since its inception. If you have been to Casamono, then you know of the unique vibe that lives within, spilling over onto the gorgeous, verdant terrace, with its hip cocktail bar. It is always difficult to describe what gives an establishment its heart, but at Casamono it is clearly Clement – whose warmth is matched

in measure by the extent to which he is on the pulse of the coolest trends in world cuisine. Many more ingredients make up Casamono’s soul – from the gorgeous murals to the quality of the produce (everything is seasonal and of the very highest quality) and the service. “A good waiter is an artist,” says Clement, who cleverly lays a plate before me with a slight swirl of the hand. “These are touches that some diners wouldn’t notice, but which are filled with creativity and beauty.” These are tiny details which, to a sensitive soul, mark the difference between a meal and an experience. Casamono brings world cuisine to Marbella, with dishes that represent a liaison between French tradition, Mediterranean ingredients and Asian inspiration. The colourful, flavourful, aromatic dishes are the product of the keen talent of Head Chef Matías Fernández and Clement’s own passion for travel. On my last visit to Casamono, Clement had just arrived from Miami and London, though he had also been to Paris, Marrakech and Istanbul in recent months.

Movement, for this restaurateur, is vital; he frequents everything from Michelin-starred food trucks to swish Parisian restaurants, picking up ideas for interesting food combinations but also taking note of the key to excellent service. “People come to Casamono to relax so it is important to give them service that comes from doing what we authentically love.” Clement is surrounded by a passionate, lively bunch – everyone from his right hand in business, former professional footballer, Zahir Belounis to superb cocktail expert, Diego; sommelier, Danilo; and manager, Antonio. Noteworthy is the trendy music, created by Malik Alary, Resident DJ of the legendary Hôtel Costes in Paris and founder of the La Musique du Faubourg label. The crux of a restaurant’s success, they say, is the food and Casamono shines brightly in this area. Food can, indeed, be ‘entertaining’, something we gleaned in dishes such as the tender grilled scallops served with sweet corn in three textures – popcorn marinated in kimchi, a delicate sweet corn sauce, and dehydrated corn. An extra ingredient was added – pancetta – inspired on London. Equally dreamy was the goats cheese profiterole – livened up with herbs and served with caramelised balsamic vinegar, baby rocket salad and delicate pieces of apple in a spicy tomato sauce. I am a big tuna tartare ‘expert’, yet at Casamono, this dish once

g Open daily for lunch and dinner. C/ Estébanez Calderón 19, Marbella. Tel: 952 774 578. www.casamonomarbella.com 209 ReR Casamono.indd 119

again surprised and delighted. The fresh, tender fish was served with an airy lime and soy foam – adding a welcome touch of citrus. We enjoyed this refreshing dish with a fruity rosé, in this case, the excellent Château Minuty Rose et Or. Casamono has a wide variety of Spanish, French and Italian wines, though a select list of New World wines is also available. We sampled heartier dishes too – like the wonderfully crisp sweetbread, topped with tiny pieces of red pepper and tomato and served with a fresh salad bearing baby rocket, crisp green beans, tomato and shaved parmesan. If you love foie then the following dish is a must: paper fine beef carpaccio topped with shredded foie, baby rocket leaves and the finest of parmesan ‘crackers’. The presa ibérica was a knockout pork dish – perfectly grilled and served with fine crisp slices of plantain and purple yam – surrounded by artistic ‘dots’ of spicy jalapeño sauce and beautifully accompanied by a full bodied Malbec (2014). The Casamono team is so dynamic, it logically needs a second vehicle for its expression – and a new restaurant will be opened soon at the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa. If Clement and his team have anything to say about it, the new venue will be turning the Hotel into a sexy place to feel the vibe, savour the world and let your soul fly with the music. As their motto goes, ‘Casamono is definitely more than a restaurant’.

CHEESE MARKETS

Wine Experience

Málaga, Nerja and Coín recently hosted a lively cheese market, held over three days and featuring over 20 varieties of cheese made in the province. Examples of the delights sampled by entrepreneurs and foodies alike included goat-, sheep- and cow-derived cheese, some of which were covered in rosemary, paprika or extra virgin oil. Visitors also sampled a wide range of dairy desserts, yoghurts and more, made by over 15 companies. The event featured cheese making workshops and visits to a cheese making factory.

Wine Experience Costa del Sol took place recently at the Ciudad Aeroportuaria de Alhaurín de la Torre, bringing together a wealth of professionals from the wine industry who presented over 483 varieties of wine. The event featured tastings, talks and networking, offering excellent opportunities for new business. It is set to take place next year as well, so make sure to stay updated so you, too, can attend. i www.wineexperiencecostadelsol.com

Dreaming Up Freshly Caught Delights on the Shores of Arenal Beach

DANIEL KOZAK

AND AUXI FUENTES Arenal Beach is one of those well kept secrets that locals and regular customers like to think of as solely ‘theirs’. There are many good reasons for its popularity – for instance, its frontline location; the restaurant sits elegantly upon the powdery shore of one of El Rosario’s most serene beaches. Then there is the décor – modern, chic and inspired, with beige rattan furniture and turquoise fabric paying homage to the salty sea air and gentle sound of the waves. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY KEVIN HORN

T

he food, of course, is always the paramount reason for a restaurant’s popularity and it is only logical that Arenal Beach should live up to savvy beach club diners’ expectations. The restaurant was founded by the former owners of Soliluna: Daniel Kozak (Head Chef) and Isabel Domínguez, Manager. During their reign, Soliluna received no less than a recommendation from the Michelin guide, owing to the blend of exquisite produce and detailed technique involved in the preparation of authentic Italian cuisine. At Arenal Beach, Daniel and Isabel are joined by Noha Haggar, who despite having managed many successful businesses, always dreamed of having a restaurant. “I have known Dani and Isa for years, and was a big fan of Soliluna so I was thrilled to join them in their new venture,” says Noha. Daniel, an Argentinean Chef who was born to Polish parents, is fascinated by the many culinary cultures of the world. He began working at the Hotel San Martin in

Buenos Aires, and it was there that he first became inspired by gastronomy. He enrolled in cooking school and set forth to travel the world, in search of new textures and flavours. Daniel firmly believes in the value of slow food – cooked dishes created with love and pampering, and made with market fresh produce. His concoctions strike a perfect balance between innovation and tradition. Presentation is beautiful but flavour and texture are always paramount. Joining Daniel is lovely assistant Chef, Auxi Fuentes, who is surely one of the most passionate cooks I have had the pleasure of meeting. Like Daniel, Auxi can think of nothing better to do with the little free time she has, than travel. Food is her fuel and it is only by savouring the very best the world has to offer, that she finds continuous inspiration. Auxi trained at one of the best cooking schools in Spain, La Cónsula, and she was also part of the successful Soliluna team. When asked to define what the menu at Arenal Beach is like, she responds

that it is, quite simply, one based on excellent produce. Don’t expect to find typical chiringuito fare at Arenal Beach; think more sophisticated dishes which are somehow best enjoyed by the sea: freshly grilled wild fish, juicy Málaga prawns served with a sweet chili sauce and a touch of basil, or a hearty barbecue with pork, beef and chorizo. Every Thursday is Argentinean night, featuring tango classes, a tango dinner show and a barbecue or à la carte meal. Sundays, meanwhile, are centred around a special brunch featuring various entrées, grilled meats and vegetables with roast potatoes, and homemade desserts, including tiramisu, brownie with dulce de leche and an apple and macadamia strudel. There are also delights you definitely wouldn’t expect to find at a chiringuito – including sucking lamb cooked at a low temperature, so tender it falls off the bone. At Arenal Beach, the Chefs have the freedom to purchase the best products in the area – zero kilometre

ingredients are therefore very much present in their dishes. “Everything we buy is fresh,” muses Auxi, “all fish is from our area while all the meat is imported from Argentina.” The cochinillo (sucking pig), logically, is sourced from Segovia. Daniel and Auxi make a perfect team, since both are mad about food, travel and the cinema. “We constantly dialogue and debate about the films we’ve seen while we cook,” laughs Auxi. “We also enjoy eating out; it’s a perfect way to discover dishes and stay inspired.” Thus, their many travels have led the Chefs to seek inspiration in far-off lands like Asia, which they pay homage to in dishes like the octopus with wasabi puree. The world is indeed a magical place for these two Chefs, who seek to share the flavours and textures they discover and dream up, with those who also believe that one of the greatest pleasures in life is good food. g Avda. Unsung Guru of Galician Grape V arieties

ALFONSO LOSADA Alfonso Losada is a passionate individual who probably knows more about indigenous Galician grape varieties than anyone else on the planet. He is also inordinately fond of eating octopus. WORDS CARLOS READ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF EVEGA

T

his he likes to do in his nearby market town of Carballiño which, although nowhere near the sea, is famed throughout Galicia for its polbo á feira – with the entire octopus traditionally boiled in copper cauldrons for some 40 to 50 minutes together with an optional whole onion, subsequently trimmed to bite-sized bits and then hastily seasoned with coarse salt, olive oil, sweet and/or hot paprika, to be dished up on wooden platters and served with delicious home grown potatoes boiled in the original water. Unfortunately, however, thanks to recent health and safety regulations, neither copper nor wood can be used in its commercial

preparation or presentation, so on this bright October day Alfonso is in mournful mode – not least because the accompanying potatoes are not properly cooked and he is too polite to say so – although he has brought along a complete case of fascinating wines with discreetly coded hand-written labels all of which he has made some 15 minutes away at EVEGA. The Estación de Viticultura e Enoloxía de Galicia was set up in 1987 in the quiet backwater of Leiro, in picturesque Ourense – an altogether different proposition to the better known coastal parts of Galicia; for here, inland, it is appreciably higher and the climate significantly more extreme. Funded

by the autonomous government, with four hectares of experimental vineyards, this research station was specifically set up to reclaim the many historic local grape varieties, and by virtue of its high tech laboratory, practical studies and experimentation in viticulture and winemaking, to advise and provide help to regional growers and producers of not just wine but aguardientes and traditional liqueurs too. There are four main indigenous Galician grape varieties which most aficionados will be familiar with: Albariño (supremely aromatic with important acidity but often lacking in balance), Godello (primarily about body and structure, almost in the

manner of a red; and prone to rot), Mencía (a black variety related to Cabernet Franc, with big colour and of major astringency – if in doubt, drink chilled and partner with the yummy pork dishes produced in the interior of Galicia or indeed with octopus!), and Treixadura (a white variety with less obvious aromatic qualities but nicely balanced acidity). However, given the fact that there are literally thousands of tiny, rural small-holdings, it was thought at one time that there might be as many as 100 native varieties; an issue hugely complicated by the fact that different names were applied even within a small radius to the same grape variety – or in fact is/was it the same grape variety? *

The most excellent Brancellao, for example, of which just 70,000 kilos are grown in the whole of Galicia and which produces lightly hued but concentrated, plum-scented red wines of enormous length and notable acidity which are great for ageing (along the lines of Italian Barbera) is known as Albarello in Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras, Serradelo in Betanzos, Brancello in Rías Baixas, and Brencello in Baixa Limia. Equally, Sousón, another late ripening black variety which also produces highly individual reds but of major colour, with sturdy

tannins and concentrated minty blue and black fruit flavours that repay bottle age and can withstand extensive periods of oak-ageing – can be found as Retinto, Tintilla, Pazao or Viñón. Most impressively, however, Alfonso and his team – after some 30 years – have narrowed the truly indigenous varieties down to 64, all of which have been genetically certified; and during this last (2016) vintage, EVEGA have microvinified (in other words made small batches of) 21 different clones of Brancellao and 8 of Sousón, the results of which will be invaluable

to those growers and wineries adventurous enough to plant it and produce impressive offerings in the future. Meantime, given EVEGA’s mission to provide informed local technical assistance and advice, Alfonso is currently wrestling with an apparently random request to figure out whether it’s viable to age wine in the bottle under water off the western Galician coast; though in truth what’s currently concerning him most is what on earth to do when he’s obliged to retire on January 14, 2017. Given however, that – outside

of EVEGA – his track record includes the planting from scratch some 20 years ago of fashion guru Roberto Verino’s eminently successful Terra do Gargalo estate in Monterrei and most recently a new project with Walt Disney associated film producer Javier Vasallo, with a pricy but quirky 2100 bottles just released of a fullflavoured partly barrel-fermented 2015 multi blend Ribeiro, one suspects that he will remain much in demand among those who truly know. Meantime we’ll be meeting again to partake of octopus. e

* LINGUISTIC FOOTNOTE: Today, speakers of the Galician language (Galego), with its close affinities to Portuguese, number some three million. Outlawed not just during Franco´s long regime but even as far back as 1905, this gave rise to the creation of The Royal Galician Academy (RAG) in – of all places – Havana, back in 1906, though it is now based in A Coruña. More recently, 1981 saw the creation of The Galician Language Association (AGAL). Both organisations seek to promote a standard/revisionist form of the language but do not see eye to eye. The Galician political world does not appear to be convinced by either, as the roots of both Galego and Portuguese are medieval and overlap, still occasionally resulting in entirely different words for the same thing in a region approximately the size of Belgium.

pets THE GUIDE .

Does Your Dog

WANT YOU TO PET THEM?

One of the best things about having pets is the ability to share our love with them, yet it is important to realise that not all pets enjoy being carressed. Signs dogs do not want to be petted include remaining rigid while you touch them, turning their head away, leaving, yawning, licking their lips, lifting a paw or ducking when you try to grab them. Those who love being loved up, on the contrary, move into your space, put themselves in contact with your hand, lie down on or near you, or push their chest into you.

DOGS AND CATS CAN LIVE PERFECTLY WELL TOGETHER.

REALLY!

If you’ve been thinking of bringing a perky pup or mischievous moggy into your home but you are worried they may not get along with your other pets, you will be pleased to learn that research shows that dogs and cats can get on perfectly well – provided they are introduced in the right manner. A study carried out by researchers at Tel Aviv University shows that the secret is to adopt the cat before the dog and to introduce them to each other when they are still young (less than six months for kittens and one year for dogs). This way, cats and dogs have time to learn each other’s body cues and conflict can be avoided.

NEW BABY ORANGUTAN

Born at Bioparc Fuengirola Bioparc in Fuengirola is a cool place to see a plethora of animals up close, but there is a brand new reason for a visit: the birth of a beautiful baby to mama, Suli, an orangutan from Borneo. Orangutans are the primate that spends the most time rearing their young – an average of seven years! Chimpanzees and gorillas take just four or five years to complete this task and usually take care of many ‘babies’ at once. Orangutans, on the contrary, clearly believe that quality is more than quantity; they do not gestate while rearing their little ones, focussing instead on teaching their young ‘the tricks of the trade’.

LARGEST STORE FOR PETS Now Open in Málaga

If you frequent the Parque Miramar shopping centre, then you may be aware of Kiwoko, the store selling food, supplies and equipment for your pet. The chain now has a brand new store in Málaga – the largest on the coast – at the Málaga Nostrum Commercial Centre. Kiwoko celebrated its launch with a big party, featuring free face painting for kids, a photocall, free and discounted items, and free deparasitation for all pets who attended. Kiwoko has a range of specialty items for pets with special needs, so make sure to pay a visit the next time your moggy or pooch needs food, a new bed, grooming products or even a new toy. i www.kiwoko.com ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2017 / 133

ARIES [21 MAR - 20 APR]

2017 begins in a quiet, understated way. Instead of plunging right into the thick of things, you will gently test the waters. Quiet, contemplative activities will give you the emotional strength to assume big career responsibilities. The Full Moon on the 12th will find you facing off with oppressive officialdom that wants you to spend more time at work. It’s critical to set healthy boundaries between work and leisure. You can’t neglect your family for the sake of your career. As January draws to a close, you’ll become more and more sociable. A gathering on the 28th is worth attending; you’ll attract admirers like a flower draws bees at this stimulating event. Your popularity comes courtesy of the New Moon, which is helping you to make inroads to strong friendships. Widening your social network will pay off both personally and professionally. Come out of the shadows and into the light as February approaches.

TAURUS [21 APR - 21 MAY]

Rubbing elbows with VIPs will be a trend during the first half of January. Whether you’re looking for love, want a job or feel compelled to showcase your creative work, get out and network. Having good connections will help you reach goals that were unattainable last year. Beware of making controversial remarks on social media sites on the 12th. That’s when the Full Moon puts everybody on edge. If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. Blocking people who get under your skin can also keep your emotions in check. There’s no point wasting valuable energy on a blowhard who is never going to change. The New Moon on the 28th will attract a welcome career opportunity. Don’t hesitate to apply for a new job in the tech industry. This position will give you fame, acclaim and a very nice salary. At long last, you’ll be able to enjoy the creature comforts you adore.

GEMINI [22 MAY - 21 JUN]

You’ll be basking in the public spotlight in the opening days of January. This is a terrific time to make a sales pitch or public appeal. People will respond warmly to your wit, intelligence and humanity. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked to manage a collection or fund. Use this money to assist people who have been overlooked in your community. The Full Moon on the 12th could make you feel undervalued, due to a pay cheque that is much smaller than you expected. Take this opportunity to build a strategy for landing a better job. Working at a university, publishing house or law firm could be profitable, both emotionally and financially. Start sending out applications on the 28th, when you’ll have the strength of the New Moon on your side. If you’ve always wanted to work abroad, this could be your big chance to do so. Be willing to venture out of familiar surroundings.

CANCER [22 JUN - 23 JUL]

A pleasure trip could pave the way for an important social contact or romantic connection. Spend the opening days of 2017 touring a city that has fascinated you since childhood. If you can’t take a trip at this time, you can always armchair travel via the internet or a movie. Discussing this on a social networking site could cause you to cross paths with someone who shares your love of a particular art form or artist. On the 12th, the Full Moon could make you quite emotional. You’ll be ready to cut ties with a relative who is always overstepping their boundaries.

Don’t become defensive about this decision. You’re well within your rights to limit their access to your personal life. The pressure will ease toward the end of the month, thanks to the New Moon on the 28th. An inheritance, royalty payment or insurance payout may arrive quite suddenly. Use this windfall to realise a career goal.

LEO [24 JUL - 23 AUG]

Financial gain through a marriage, business partnership or investment deal could arrive early in the month. This is a good time to indulge your love of luxury. Splash out on a new outfit, fancy gadget or anything else that appeals to your sensual side. As the middle of January approaches, you could feel spiritually depleted because of a stressful Full Moon on the 12th. Beware of a temptation to lash out at people who try pushing your buttons with teasing remarks. It’s best to walk away from such provocateurs or better yet, avoid them altogether. The New Moon on the 28th is ideal for embarking on a partnership of some kind. You’ll feel an instant connection with someone who doesn’t look or sound like anybody else. As January draws to a close, avoid discussing sensitive topics like religion and politics. An argument could break out that does serious damage to a work relationship.

VIRGO [24 AUG - 23 SEP]

Two heads are better than one in the early days of January. Spending quality time with a loving partner will strengthen your commitment. It will feel like you can move mountains with your beloved by your side. If you’re single, you could meet someone special at a professional conference. Be ready to make the first move, as the object of your affection might be too shy to approach you. The Full Moon on the 12th will put a strain on a friendship. You’re tired of trying to keep up with lavish lifestyles. Instead of pushing yourself to buy more luxuries, focus on living within your means. You may not realise it, but your nearest and dearest might also be lying awake at night, wondering how to pay the bills. On the 28th, the New Moon could mark an exciting job offer. Not only will this position offer a lot of mental stimulation, but it will also have some impressive perks.

LIBRA [24 SEP - 23 OCT]

The opening days of January are perfect for sprucing up your wardrobe or updating your look in some way. Keep all your receipts and don’t undergo any procedures that will permanently alter your looks; with Mercury going retrograde until the 7th, you should keep your options open. The Full Moon on the 12th could find you facing off with an unbearable authority figure. Resist the temptation to quit a good job in a huff. Instead, quietly launch a job search. It’s much easier to find employment when you already have a job. By the time the New Moon rises on the 28th, you will get a terrific offer. Working for a company that places a strong emphasis on creativity will be the answer to a prayer. You’ll get the full support of your best friend or romantic partner to pursue this line of work. Good things come to those who wait.

SCORPIO [24 OCT - 22 NOV]

Love, adventure and leisure will characterise the opening days of 2017 for you. This is a wonderful time to go on a romantic trip with your amour, post a dating profile

or launch a creative enterprise. Work projects are destined to be revised during this period, due to Mercury going retrograde, so don’t pour too much energy into this area until the middle of January. On the 12th, the Full Moon will expose some gaps in your knowledge. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and additional training. Nobody will look down on you for wanting to further your education. The New Moon on the 28th could allow you to work from home a few days each week. Avoiding a long commute and office politics will make you much more productive. If you’ve been thinking of relocating, check out an up-and-coming neighbourhood. You could find a great piece of property that dramatically increases in value.

SAGITTARIUS [23 NOV - 21 DEC]

The opening days of 2017 offer a welcome opportunity to recover from the Christmas season. Stick close to home, spending quality time with your relatives and pets. There will be plenty of time to hit the party scene later, when your body has had a chance to rest, relax and revive. The Full Moon on the 12th could have you scrambling to pay an unexpected bill. Take a deep breath and get in touch with your creditor; it may be possible to work out a payment program over an extended period. As January comes to a close, you’ll receive some good news on the 28th. That’s when the New Moon will help you reconnect with a fun-loving neighbour or relative. Together, you might book a trip or sign up for a course.

AQUARIUS [21 JAN - 19 FEB]

You have a good chance of making money from your creative work in early January. This is a great time to show the fruits of your labour to an editor, talent agent or boutique owner. The income you earn from such work should be put toward a vacation or spiritual retreat you’ve been longing to take. The Full Moon on the 12th may prompt you to change your routine in a radical way. Quitting a job, starting a health regimen and breaking a bad habit are among the possibilities. By the 28th, you’ll look like a brand new person. Use the energy of the New Moon to undergo a dramatic makeover. Changing your look will attract exciting opportunities. Don’t be surprised when someone asks you to manage a social media campaign or launch a promotional effort. You know how to attract favourable publicity. Use this talent to pave the way to a successful career.

PISCES [20 FEB - 20 MAR]

All eyes will be on you in the early days of January. Your enhanced charisma will attract love, money and creative opportunities. Take every chance to get out and about during the first two weeks of the month. On January 12th, the Full Moon might nag you into completing a creative project that you have left to gather dust for far too long. Rearrange your schedule to finish this work, as it has significant potential. The New Moon on the 28th could find you adopting a lower profile. Use this time to rest, relax and recharge your spiritual batteries. You’ll be much more productive after you catch up on your sleep. Focusing on positive influences that fill you with hope will also be therapeutic. Do your best to avoid toxic people and tense situations in the closing days of January. You’ve always been highly sensitive to your environment. As a result, you should take every precaution to protect yourself from stress. ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2017 / 137
