The Portuguese phrase ‘viajou na maionese’, literally to travel in the mayonnaise, meaning to live in a dream world, well summed up my experience of the romantic charm of Lisbon. Like Istanbul and Rome, two other centres of far-reaching empires, it’s set on seven hills. Her ‘Age of Discovery’ began with the conquest of Ceuta in 1415 by Henry the (half-English) Navigator and continued with an impressively short period that included the rounding of the Cape in 1488, Vasco da Gama’s arrival in India in 1498 and Pedro Cabral’s landing on the Brazilian coast in 1500. This was the start of the era of the city’s opulence and prominence.
Y
ou have to experience Fado. I went to Sr Vinho (www.srvinho.com) on Rua do Meio à Lapa. It’s hard to say why it’s so popular with the Japanese and the Dutch. And no one really knows how it started. Similar in expressive intensity to both the tango of Buenos Aires and the flamenco of Seville, fado, meaning fate or destiny, aligns itself with the word saudade meaning a longing for things that were or might have been. The slaves from Brazil may have yearned for their homeland and certainly Brazilian mandolins resemble the ‘Portuguese guitars’, though they use nine rather than twelve strings. Prostitutes historically descended on tavernas wrapped in a shawl, partly as they were too poor to buy a jacket but also to protect themselves from the clutches of the audience in whose close proximity they sang these impromptu songs known as desgarradas. › 23 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

Aerial view of Tower of Belém at sunset
I spent my first morning in Belém to see Lisbon’s main attraction, the Jerónimos Monastery. It has 16th century sprung vaults and separate conical pinnacles at the top. The church has its light coming through the stained glass, its cloisters with their unusual Manueline or ‘Late Portuguese Gothic’ rounded rather than pointed arches, and its yellow-tiled refectory. They are all enchanting in their own distinctive way. I read a lengthy Portuguese dictionary to find words to depict the wealth of her
wonderful characters. I liked janeleiro for one who spends much time at the front window, especially a young woman who is something of a coquette and certainly I witnessed an espreitadeira, a woman who spies on her neighbours. Luckily I had no reason myself to spy on and identify a pesamenteiro, one who habitually joins groups of mourners at the home of a deceased person, ostensibly to offer condolences but in reality to partake of the refreshments which they expect will be served! ›

I stayed at the Lapa Palace (www. lapapalace.com). A study in elegance, this perfectly pink hotel has the feel of a well-run private house with fresh flowers, polished tables, and telepathic staff in their traditional multi-buttoned uniforms who went the extra mile or more in helping me secure a particular coat from a local shop. And wonderful at breakfast to enjoy those lovely pastéis de nata which are custard tarts filled with sweet egg cream and dusted with cinnamon for which the city is famous! The hotel is set in the exclusive, residential Lapa district, impressively beside the Chinese and American embassies. It’s within walking range of the vast neoclassical monument that is the Basilica da Estrela and across the street from the gates of the Jardim da Estrela that‘s home to age-old tropical banyan trees no doubt brought back from India or Brazil. When entering make sure you get a bench decked with sunlight as they are keenly fought over!

Intricate mosaics pave the city’s streets and squares. In Portugal these glazed tiled pavements were used since the 13th century and were made of geometric pieces of plain colours. Then by the 16th century they used azulejo as wall revetment, based on patterns of the Hispanic Moorish techniques from Seville and Toledo before gradually the Islamic motifs of knot work and geometric patterns were replaced by European ones of vegetal and animal elements.
Magnificent small, cubed tiles emerged in the 19th century and were made by calceteiros out of limestone and basalt. Indeed the whole of Lisbon is like a tile museum with its colourful panels. I strongly recommend getting a Lisbon Tourist Card (www.lisboacard. org) to cover many of the museums, shops and modes of transport. With mine I jumped on the trams, surely the best way to experience the city and used as much by locals

It houses a collection of fine art and has an impressive array of both Corot and Guardi while the eponymous Turkish founder has bequeathed many amazing Ottoman treasures including Iznik tiles offering an interesting cultural comparison with the local variety. ›

For a different way to explore the city, I hopped in an electric ‘tuk-tuk’ with Hills on Wheels (www.hills-on-wheels.com) with its high-pitched shrill resulting from its three wheels to neighbouring Alfama, the original Arab settlement, to walk up to its steep streets. Here I came across Armazem das Caldas, a lovely ceramics shop, in Campo de Santa Clara. On Alfama’s summit is perched the Church of Santa Engrácia, known as the National Pantheon as it looks proudly down across the Tagus estuary. I myself had a few days extra to spend: a puente if you like. Puente is the Spanish for bridge and the Spanish have their bank holidays on a Tuesday so that Monday will, on most occasions, be treated as a bridge day (an extra day of holiday) ensuring a four day weekend. There is also a viaducto, which is when two holidays fall on Tuesday and Thursday thus enabling someone to take the entire week off. ›

Rice Paddies at Quinta da Comporta
Most tourists go to experience the magic of Sintra for their excursion. But I chose to take myself an hour south to Comporta where all the trendy Lisbon crowd now gather for their weekends and holidays. At dawn and dusk, storks rest and nest famously on every available telegraph pole and church steeple. I came to my next resting place Quinta da Comporta (www.quintadacomporta.com) A quinta is a country villa or estate. And here I found pool villas and town houses all designed for an authentic wellbeing experience. Opened in 2019, it has two super-sized ancient rice warehouses under terracottatiled rooftops where once the rice, before being dried across its burnt orange terracotta brick courtyard, was dressed and
finally stirred. Now redesigned the buildings are still set behind working rice paddies, brown and golden in their different stages of harvesting. Bang next to which was the extra-long fortymetre infinity swimming pool all held in glass and allowing me simultaneously to swim and experience the outside world. It reminded me of Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire appealing to chic and trendy guests seeking urban comforts in a rural setting. Of the two largerthan-life barns, one was to eat in and the other to exercise and be pampered beneath its vertiginous ceiling. The serene setting of the Oryza Spa and Hammam provided a fitting focus for its diet of wellness on offer. Lit up at night it resembled a Tuscan church one

end with its curvaceous façade and a monastic ruin the other with its lack of a roof, allowing me to savour the breeze and spot the stars snug within the warmth of the outdoor pool. My spa treatment was inspirational as I experienced a defoliating scrub made from rice granules and the massage that followed. Impressive in every sense! In the other barn the hotel’s massive Eira and Mar D’Arrozal restaurant is set in sand, sea grasses, and palm trees and lit up inside at night by giant string lanterns and wooden beams that are recovered from
railway sleepers. The floorto-ceiling glass windows lent it a gloriously liberating indoors-outdoors sensation and I enjoyed, from paddy to plate, a tataki ’pounded’ tuna with marinated mango, red onion pickle, toasted almonds and coconut slices, before a grouper with avocado purée and home-grown vegetables, followed by an eclectic selection of cheeses. From here I reached the local village of Carvalhal to get to the beaches of Pego and Carvalhal where pristine white sand allows horses to ride among shifting sand dunes. Nearby the town of

Comporta, literally meaning a lock or a gate that holds back water, has trendy boutiques with clothes and homeware and the area has now become an ‘under-the-radar’ celebrity retreat. I ate one night a mere tenminute drive away at Sem Porta Restaurant (www. sublimecomporta.pt/ restaurant-sem-porta). Set in pine woods and with luxurious surroundings of brick, wood and leather, with frayed rattan lanterns resembling jellyfish and a roaring fire, it’s lit up among olive trees outside with two smaller ones within this mammoth former barn. ›

Gorgeous Crazy Paving in Central Lisbon
I always like to eat fish when close to the sea as I know it will be super fresh. So I enjoyed spider crab and Russian salad followed by a grilled turbot with coriander rice, capers and razor clams before indulging fully in a dark chocolate fondant. My guilty pleasure after a weekend online doing something my receptionist convinced me to try: a breathwork and meditation class we did together online with Evolve (www. evolvehealingandmeditation. com). Both heavenly in their
different ways. I returned to Lisbon with ease beyond the other side of the river Tagus determined now to share with the British this wilderness of coastline already popular with Germans and the French. Lisbon instinctively conjured up for me the Portuguese proverb cão picado por cobra, tem medo de linguiç meaning a dog that has been bitten by a snake is afraid of sausages. Effectively meaning once bitten, twice shy, for me, being once bitten, means I am forever attached to this 32 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

Edinburgh THE ‘WOW FACTOR’ TAKES OVER THE CITY OF LITERATURE

he W brand is known for its appeal to young travellers, proximity to the city centre, and chic boutique-hotel spirit, with many of its hotels being conversions of older architectural wonders. A modern style, laid-back ambience, and upbeat vibe, mixed with local flavour, make W Hotels stand above those that simply provide travellers with a place to rest. The W is known for giving back to its surroundings as much as it benefits from them, often offering guests dreamlike views over sites, monuments, and vibrant hubs that capture the very essence of what makes a city so special. Not that many travellers needed a reminder of the beauty of Edinburgh. With its stunning blend of medieval, Georgian, and neoclassical architecture, this city is home to historically rich sites like Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and is framed by lush green hills and a nearby coast. It is also here that you will find Arthur’s seat, pristine parks and gardens, and a dormant volcano! Edinburgh is perhaps best known for its cultural vibrancy and warm, welcoming atmosphere — all of which perfectly align with the ‘W’ philosophy. ›

DIVA – wowing London until next spring
Tina Turner didn’t just wear this iconic dress. “She worked it,” said designer, Bob Mackie
From the Latin word for goddess… to praise for the prowess of plumpbosomed opera prima donnas… to a tabloid press put-down for pushy pouting pop princesses… the definition of ‘diva’ has had a chequered history on its downward slide from compliment to slur. Now a major London exhibition of divalicious costumes worn by two centuries of stage and screen stars is reclaiming the diva’s divine right to be feisty, fussy and fabulous.
“IF DIVA MEANS GIVING YOUR BEST, THEN YES, I GUESS I AM A DIVA.” PATTI LABELLE
“I
t takes a long time to get to be a diva, you’ve gotta work at it," Diana Ross once said, clearly referring to her talent, not her temper. Miss Ross – as her Supreme highness insisted on being called – was legendary for both: as famous for her 100 million record sales as for hitting an airline attendant with her hatbox while attempting to smuggle her Maltese puppy onto the plane. Ross is among a sisterhood of brilliantbut-bloody-minded artists celebrated in DIVA at London’s V&A Museum, which is wowing the crowds with its catwalk of
iconic outfits, ranging from the risqué (a pearl-string bra worn by Theda Bara in 1917’s silent Cleopatra) to the shocking pink (the ‘vagina dress’ strutted by Janelle Monáe in her music video Pynk). Monroe’s little black 'I wanna be loved by you' dress from Some Like It Hot (1959), the flame-red ‘disco phoenix’ ensembles worn by Cher and Tina Turner on 1977’s Sonny and Cher Show and Shirley Bassey’s bejewelled wellies from Glastonbury 2017 are other treasures connected by the women who wore them – divas all, who have been both exalted and vilified en route to the top of their game. ›

“A DIVA IS A FEMALE VERSION OF A HUSTLER.” BEYONCÉ
Along with the sparkle and smart headsets relaying famous diva songs and soundbytes, the show shines the spotlight on artists who challenged the status quo or became forces for social change in a male-dominated industry: Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin, who sang out for civil rights; Mary Pickford, who broke the stranglehold of the Hollywood star system; opera sensation Adelina Patti, who shattered the myth of the repressed Victorian woman, earning more than most men. “It’s a way to redress an injustice served to these extraordinary performers” says curator Kate Bailey “They have been misunderstood and scrutinised in a way which carries a lot of negativity, when actually, these solo artists are hard-working, ambitious, visionary, trail-blazing… and should be celebrated for that. I wanted to unpack the term, trace its origins, look at why it has become negative.” ›

Modern divas are a distance from their divine origins – although Queen Cleopatra, who claimed divinity and demanded asses’ milk baths, had some of the present-day qualifications. In 1883 the term entered the Oxford English Dictionary as ‘distinguished female singer, prima donna’, in deference to the succession of virtuoso female performers taking the grand opera houses of Europe by storm. However, somewhere along the vocal scale between the tantrums of Maria Callas and the demands of Maria Carey, divas got a bad name. The show at the V&A puts them back on their pedestal by turning the negative on its head. “The aggressive becomes powerful, the narcissist is self-aware, the control-freak is a perfectionist, the rebel is a game-changer, and the exhibitionist is an artist,” explains Bailey. Or maybe the true definition is much simpler. In the words of Gemma Collins, TOWIE star and self-styled diva: “At the end of the day, a diva is just a woman who knows what she wants.” DIVA RUNS AT THE V&A SOUTH KENSINGTON UNTIL APRIL 7, 2024

MARIA CALLAS 1923 –1977
From rags to riches to the biggest name in 20th century opera, “Don’t talk to me about rules, dear. I make the goddamn rules,” is one of the American-born Greek soprano’s milder quotations. Dubbed both La Divina and The Tigress, the media made less of her sublime bel canto than her walk-outs from productions, firing from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, and affair with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis (before and after he married Jackie Kennedy). “Other artists, you could get around. But Callas you could not, she was more intelligent,” said impresario Rudolph Bing who fired and later rehired her. “She knew exactly what she wanted, and why she wanted it.” Callas remained passionate about her role as an artist seeking perfection. “I will always be as difficult as necessary to achieve the best,” she said.

OPERA DIVAS
“Once a virtuoso has been judged a diva, she becomes divine, the object of a blind, passionate and unrivalled cult,” Isabelle Moindrot, Mythologies of the Diva in Nineteenth-Century French Theatre. In an age when men held all the power and perceptions of female performers and prostitutes were interchangeable, opera divas achieved goddess status. Worshipped as much for their fabulous lifestyles as their vocal range, they were paid enormous fees, went on tour, and enjoyed an independence
denied to most Victorian woman Every city in 19th century Europe had its palatial opera house and a musical cognoscenti gagging for Puccini and Rossini, whose works gave sopranos powerful lead roles that showcased their glass-shattering top notes and heaving bosoms to maximum effect. Visiting cards and posters using newlyinvented photography amplified the prima donna’s glamorous image. Women didn’t have the electoral vote but opera divas won the public vote and achieved immortality in the Oxford English Dictionary.
ADELINA PATTI 1843-1919
This Madrid-born Italian soprano was the toast of three continents and second only to Queen Victoria as the most recognised woman in Britain. She commanded $5,000 a night, paid upfront in gold ($130,000 in today’s money) which she reinvested in her public image. She wore fabulous Parisian gowns, posed for leading portrait artists, and gave interviews about her beauty routines, her castle in Wales, and her theatre modelled on La Scala, Milan. Opera impresario James Mapleson recalled her stubborn personality, sharp business sense, and the parrot she taught to shriek, “Cash! Cash!” whenever he walked into the room. ›

Theda Bara as Cleopatra, 1917. Dir. J. Gordon Edwards. ScreenProd / Photononstop/Alamy Stock Photo
Hollywood invented the mass-produced diva on an epic scale: Garland, Garbo, Grable… and that’s just the Gs! The major studios had seen how the diva, under their control, could be given multiple identities (often complete inventions) to create a bigger box office buzz. With pin-ups, public appearances, studio magazines, and interviews providing glimpses into their extravagant lifestyles, the cult of celebrity was firmly established. But you can’t keep a good diva down. Roaring Twenties ‘It Girl’ Clara Bow negotiated a percentage-deal bonus that made her a fortune; Bette Davis (19081989) sued Warner Bros for equal pay; and ‘America’s Sweetheart’ Mary Pickford showed her tough side in 1919 when she co-founded her own studios, United Artists, striking a blow for independent divadom.

JOSEPHINE BAKER 1906-1975
The first black woman to star in a major motion picture, she first shot to fame for her Dance Sauvage in a topless banana dress at the Folies Bergère. A pet cheetah in a diamond collar which frequently escaped into the orchestra pit was also part of her act. The poor kid from Missouri became The Creole Goddess and one of the highest-paid American entertainers in France. A champion of civil rights and a spy for the French Resistance, she was painted by Picasso, befriended by Cocteau, and she negotiated her own sponsorship deals in everything from Bakerfix hair gel to bananas!

GENDER FLUID DIVAS Who says boys can’t be divas? Not Elton John, Queen of high camp and hissy-fits. His Louis XIVinspired 50th birthday outfit of Swarovski crystals and ostrich feathers topped with a tall powdered wig is one of the exhibition’s centrepieces, along with Prince’s high-heeled black satin booties. In fact, the first leading opera sopranos really were men. From the days when the stage was considered no place for a woman until well into the 19th century, female roles were often played by castrati – male singers castrated before puberty to preserve their youthful vocal pitch.

RIHANNA FOR POPE
MODERN DIVAS The 21st century has produced a constellation of ‘artists with attitude’ who’ve been tagged with the term diva in a derogatory way. Mariah Carey has been a particular target for her ‘tour riders’ – the extras artists require a venue to provide. In Carey’s case they have reportedly included 20 white kittens, 100 doves, 80 security guards, butterflyshaped confetti, and an assistant to handle her used chewing gum. “I deserve
to be high maintenance at this point… after working my ass off my entire life”, she recently stated. In the same vein, Jennifer Lopez likes 250-thread-count sheets, Madonna requires white roses and candles in her dressing room to ward off “negative glances and mean-spiritness”, and Beyonce insists on alkaline water chilled to 21 degrees, served with $900 titanium straws. Queen Bey also demands her own toilet seat and red loo paper… Modern divas have also been known to work for worthier causes than themselves. Beyoncé has lent her voice to the Black Lives Matter campaign, Lady Gaga promotes mental health awareness and LGBT rights, while hiphop star Lizzo, queen of feathers, fake furs and body positivity, leans into it on behalf of plus-sized women.

The Christmas season, for me, has always been a time of unparalleled enchantment. Since I’ve settled in Spain, I’ve found a deeper connection. There’s an undeniable magic to the way Spain embraces Christmas, with its roots firmly embedded in the country’s cultural heritage. What truly enrapture me are the enchanting traditional fragrances that effortlessly draw us into the warm embrace of the holiday spirit. One of the scents closest to my heart, defining the essence of the Spanish Christmas, is the irresistible aroma of ‘turrón.’ This sweet confection, carefully prepared with a blend of honey, sugar, egg whites, and toasted
almonds, fills the air with a delightful fusion of toasty almonds and the delicate sweetness of honey. It’s more than just a culinary delight; it embodies the spirit of generosity and unity that makes the Spanish Christmas so special. Whether enjoyed as a delectable dessert or shared as a heartfelt gift, the fragrance of turrón encapsulates the joy and abundance that define this festive season for me. Then, stepping into any bustling Spanish kitchen during the holidays, I am immediately greeted by the irresistible aroma of ‘polvorones’ and ‘mantecados.’ These traditional shortbread cookies, infused with hints of cinnamon and lemon; sharing homemade sweets symbolises the profound love, care, and the joy as a family. These scents, intertwined with the vibrant decorations and bustling Christmas markets, create an enchanting experience that captivates my senses, igniting the joyous spirit that defines the cherished Christmas tradition. ›

BOARD GAMES THAT ARE ANYTHING BUT BORING
MONOPOLY AND CLUEDO ARE OLD CLASSICS THAT ARE ALWAYS FUN, BUT IF YOU’RE KEEN ON EXPANDING YOUR BOARD GAME COLLECTION, JUST A FEW OF THE MOST POPULAR CHOICES INCLUDE: » SCYTHE (FOR TWO TO FIVE PLAYERS, AGED EIGHT AND ABOVE) It will take a few hours to make your way through the rulebook of this strategic game, yet, since I own and play this myself, I can confidently say that the initial time investment is definitely worth it. Players represent one of five factions aiming to claim land in post-WWI Eastern Europe. Everyone starts with a set of resources (including coins, combat cards, and power) but each has a different starting location and two hidden objectives. At every turn, you are called upon to choose one of four actions on the board. The game ends after one player places their star
on the Triumph Track. The winner is the one with the greatest number of coins. » WAVELENGTH (FOR TWO TO 12 PLAYERS, AGES FIVE AND UP) An ideal game for families who love discussing and debating ideas. Its aim is ostensibly simple. Players are divided into two teams, and each team takes turns rotating a dial to where they think a target is located along a spectrum between two opposing concepts (for instance, Cold/Hot, Wet/ Dry, Smells Good/Smells Bad. This spectrum is hidden behind a screen.
59 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
One player from the team, the ‘Psychic’, knows where the target is and must give their team members one clue about where it lies on the spectrum. Now the team has to discuss the clue and decide where to turn the dial. Once they make a decision, the screen is opened to reveal how close their guess was. » DARWIN’S JOURNEY (FOR ONE TO FOUR PLAYERS, AGED 14 AND UP) This game is played over five rounds. In each round, you have four ‘workers’ do your bidding. Once they occupy a certain slot, you can explore an island, navigate the Pacific Ocean, upskill your workers, and much more. The game is ideal for players who always dreamed of exploring the Galapagos – a magical place of indescribable beauty and impressive biodiversity. There, they can expand their knowledge of natural sciences, come to enlightening conclusions, and admire the stunning complexity of the animal and plant kingdoms. ›

» LA GRANJA: DELUXE MASTER SET (FOR ONE TO FOUR PLAYERS, AGES 12 AND UP) La Granja is a classic strategy game that was re-released as a Deluxe Master Set and it is definitely a big seller and massive crowd-pleaser. It may sound simple but it is actually a game that requires deep thinking. Once you start, you won’t want to end, as it is exciting from start to finish! In this game, players control small farms on the island of Mallorca. Over time, they develop their farms and deliver goods to the village, and each player vies for their country estate to win the title of ‘La Granja’. Over the course of six rounds, players expand their farms by adding fields,

extensions, market barrows, and workers. They earn victory points by delivering goods to a nearby village. The challenging part of this game is that players must observe the actions of their rivals, manipulate the turn order, and adjust their strategy based on the dice and cards. » SCHOLARS OF THE SOUTH TIGRIS (ONE TO FOUR PLAYERS, AGED 12 AND UP) This game was designed by two of the biggest names in the industry – S.J. Macdonald and Shem Phillips of Garphill Games, whose amazing list of hit games includes Raiders of the North Sea and Architects of the West Kingdom. It is

set during the height of the Abbasid Caliphate, circa 830 AD. The Caliph has called upon the keenest minds to acquire scientific manuscripts from all over the known world. Players must increase their influence in the House of Wisdom, and hire skilled linguists to translate the foreign scrolls into Arabic. The winner is the one who has the most victory points when the game is over. Points are gained by translating scrolls, increasing knowledge in various areas of science and mathematics, influencing the three guilds, and allowing translators to retire after years of faithful service. The game ends when all four caliph cards have been revealed.
PARTY GAMES IF YOU’RE MORE INTO SHORT BUT SWEET GAMES YOU DON’T NEED MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES TO COMMIT TO, THEN PARTY GAMES ARE DEFINITELY THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU. DELIGHT YOUR GUESTS WITH THE FOLLOWING CLASSICS. » CHARADES You know the score! You divide your group into two teams and the teams have to guess a word or phrase that one team member has to communicate without saying a word! They can indicate how many syllables the word has and use mimicry and even the “sounds like” aid. To make this extra fun, theme your charade event. Good choices include books, movies, sports, foods, and (if you have young children) animals. » MYSTERY GIFT Buy one gift for each player (gifts can cost as little as €5) and let each guest take one gift, starting with the first player. When the second player takes their gift, they can exchange it for the first player’s gift and as more people select gifts, the last player can swap their gift with anyone else’s. The final
player gets to pick any gift they want, of course. Now here’s the rub: Nobody knows what lies beneath the wrapping paper, so you could end up swapping a great gift for a joke one! » PICTIONARY One of the best things about this game is that you don’t need anything more than a whiteboard and a marker to play it. Simply divide your family up into teams and let family members try to guess what their team member is drawing. The winner is the team that got the most guesses right within a set time (use a timer to add to the excitement factor). Make a list of quirky things to draw beforehand to make the game more amusing. You can theme the drawings, selecting topics like family members’ favourite things, hobbies, or TV shows. ›

Everyone writes their own name down and puts it into a jar and writes the name of a household item and puts it into another jar. Each family member’s goal is to give their ‘item’ to someone else. When they do, that person is ‘dead’ and out of the game so they cannot ‘murder’ someone else. The last person ‘alive’ wins! Check online for playing rules. » NAME THAT TUNE An easy yet exciting game. CULTIVATING IDENTITY AND RESILIENCE: THE OKAÏDI WAY
Brunet speaks passionately about Okaïdi’s collections, which are thoughtfully designed to empower children to confidently express their unique identities. “We inspire each child to embrace their ‘Good Identity’,” he says. This ideology permeates every garment, ensuring that children can be creators, dreamers, and explorers in their own narratives. With the digital age reshaping retail and the unforeseen challenges of the
pandemic, Okaïdi’s strategic pivot was both timely and effective. The brand has seamlessly integrated an omnichannel experience, enhancing their online presence while maintaining the allure of in-store interactions. “In three years, we’ve doubled our online outcomes, yet the allure of the physical store remains strong,” Brunet shares. In the competitive Spanish market, Okaïdi’s blueprint is its societal commitment, adherence to circular economy principles, and unwavering transparency. These foundational values solidify Okaïdi’s status 66 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
as a brand that is not only fashionable but also responsible and genuine.
EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION: OKAÏDI’S VISION AND VALUES IN SPAIN
The story of Okaïdi in Spain, as eloquently laid out by General Director Sergi Brunet, transcends a mere business success narrative. It is a profound illustration of the power a brand has not only to evolve and innovate but also to steadfastly adhere to its core principles. From its initial foray into the Spanish market, Okaïdi has carved out a niche for itself, cementing its status
not just as a retailer but as a pillar of the community that values the uniqueness of each child. Under Brunet’s astute leadership, Okaïdi has embraced the challenges of a rapidly changing retail landscape, turning them into opportunities for growth and reinvigoration. This journey is not simply about expanding a business footprint; it is about nurturing a philosophy that each generation of children should be celebrated for their individuality, encouraged to express their identity, and equipped with clothing that mirrors their diverse personalities and needs. Brunet’s vision for the brand is rooted in the belief that business growth should not be at odds with purpose and responsibility. Okaïdi’s mission in Spain has been twofold: to offer fashion that speaks to children’s comfort and self-expression, and to conduct business in a way that is sensitive to the environmental and societal impacts. This dual focus has allowed Okaïdi to stand out in a crowded marketplace, furnishing Spanish families not just apparel but a set of values they can identify with. As the company looks ahead, it views a horizon filled with potential. Brunet
envisions a future where Okaïdi’s reach extends even further, with a goal of establishing 150 stores across the Iberian Peninsula and tripling online sales, all the while maintaining a team imbued with entrepreneurial spirit and undaunted by challenges. The strategy is clear: to be a partner in the journey of childhood, with stores in even the smallest of localities, creating a presence that’s as much about building relationships as it is about retailing clothes. Okaïdi’s special place in the Spanish market is underpinned by its commitment to societal well-being, its pioneering role in promoting a circular economy, and its transparency in all aspects of operation. These foundational values not only differentiate Okaïdi but also fortify its position as a conscientious and authentic children’s fashion brand. In essence, Brunet has steered Okaïdi on a course that intertwines traditional values with forward-thinking strategies, a combination that resonates deeply with Spanish families. As Okaïdi marches into the future, it holds on to the core of what has made it a cherished brand: a profound commitment to empowering

brand to be today. What really drove Lamborghini towards the sportscar market was his dissatisfaction with the customer service he experienced as a client of other luxury car brands, like Ferrari. This is ultimately what sparked Lamborghini to expand beyond the farming sector: his desire to do it better. Automobili Lamborghini subsequently formed in 1963, based out of Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, and would seek to redefine standards for luxury performance cars. And it didn’t take long for Lamborghini to make a statement in the market…

MAKING WEDGES, AND WAVES
In 1966, Lamborghini introduced the Miura. With the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona firmly in its crosshairs, the Miura had to make a splash, and it did. It featured a ground-breaking transverse-mounted V12 engine, slotted into the centre of the chassis. That mighty motor meant the Miura could reach a top speed of 275 km/h (171 mph), making it one of the fastest cars of its time. Its distinctive design came from the pen of Marcello Gandini, a man synonymous with the marque, who would go on to design other icons, including the Countach and Diablo. ›

Despite creating awe-inspiring cars, Lamborghini faced various financial challenges throughout its history. Ownership changed hands several times, with Chrysler taking control in the 1980s, later selling out to an Indonesian group. Finally, Audi, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group, acquired Lamborghini in 1998, and brought in much-needed stability and investment, ensuring the brand’s long-term success, and the car that would catapult sales to new highs throughout this turbulent period – the aptly named, Diablo. THE 21ST CENTURY RENAISSANCE
The early 2000s saw the introduction of the Lamborghini Murciélago, which featured significantly more refined features and improved aero. The Murciélago became a best-seller for the marque, opening up a new market segment for Lamborghini with its more ’affordable’ pricing - contributing radically to the brand's financial success. The Murciélago is powered by an awe-inspiring 6.2-liter V12, pushing out a thundering 670 horsepower, and featured a sophisticated all-wheel drive system. Its design was characterised by its broad shoulders and aggressive styling. It was not just a supercar; it was a work of art that exemplified
Lamborghini's dedication to performance and aesthetics. Lamborghini’s love for larger-displacement, normally aspirated V12s continued into the Aventador, introduced in 2011. It features a monstrous 6.5-liter engine, producing over 700 horsepower across various iterations, propelling it to a top speed of 349 km/h (217 mph). The Aventador also incorporates advanced materials and technology, including a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and active aerodynamics. The Huracán followed in 2014, with both models still in production to this day. The Huracán is hailed as a more accessible model compared to its V12powered siblings but doesn't compromise on speed or

style. Packing a 5.2-liter V10 engine producing up to 640 horsepower, the Huracán offers a thrilling driving experience and boasts further refinements while retaining signature Lamborghini looks. It has become one of the best-selling models in Lamborghini's history, thanks to broader market appeal. In 2018, Lamborghini, somewhat controversially, broke new ground by entering the SUV market. The Urus promised to combine Lamborghini's DNA with everyday practicality, making it the fastest SUV in the world. This lavish grocery getter played a pivotal role in boosting Lamborghini's global sales, illustrating the brand's capacity to adapt to changing market demands.

Euphoria
I
f you’re like me, then the first time you may have really come across Sydney Sweeney was in the global hit HBO series, Euphoria, which is centred on the challenges and drama of high school life for a group of middle-class suburban teens. Sex, drugs, and betrayal mark the lives of characters facing issues such as addiction, body image woes, the dangers of the Internet, the need to belong, and strained relationships with their parents. Of all these characters, arguably the most polemic is Cassie – the quintessential blonde ‘it’ girl with a devouring need to receive male approval as a means of overcoming deep
personal hatred and insecurity. Cassie is a tough role to play, and it is hard to imagine anyone but Sydney Sweeney doing so. There is one scene in Euphoria Season 2 that has given rise to a literal universe of memes; it’s the one in the school bathroom, where Cassie (who has just engaged in an hours-long, ridiculously complex beauty and styling routine) hysterically cries about her relationship with her boyfriend, Nate, screaming, “I have never, ever been happier.” The chaos and hysteria of that scene are simply iconic and 79 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
hilarious and if you have an appreciation for fine acting, then it’s one you cannot miss! There is, indeed, something enigmatic about Sydney Sweeney that makes her so great at playing characters you ‘love to hate’. In Euphoria, the audience may empathise with her (her mother is unstable and cold and her father has abandoned his family twice) yet chastise the fact that she steals her best friend’s boyfriend. And she is adept at portraying on-the-edge characters who are clutching onto straws for survival. ›

Anyone But You
You may have also noticed her dichotomous character portrayal in Season 2 of White Lotus. In this comedic murder mystery, she plays a highly intelligent yet vicious teen who seems to delight in watching the demise of a newly married couple’s relationship. She can be highly emotional and vapid depending on the specific role and scene, and her incredible range is something that top
directors and producers are taking note of. She seems to enjoy flitting between series, big-screen releases, and streamed movies. Recently, she appeared in the series Reality, which tells the real-life story of Air Force veteran and government translator, Reality Winner (Yes, that is her real name). The latter was accused and convicted of leaking an intelligence report about
Russian hacking of voter rolls during the 2016 U.S. election. Winner mailed classified information to the award-winning news organisation, Intercept, as she felt that the government had been intentionally misleading citizens about Russia’s attempt to upend the election. What makes this movie so special is the fact that the dialogue, based on an FBI transcript, is largely unaltered.

As such, the language isn’t explicit and none of the characters say what they are really thinking. It’s the ultimate immersion into the sometimes scary world of working for an organisation like the FBI. One false move and not only are you out, but you’re incarcerated for five years or more… The film brings a stark reality home: the truth doesn’t always protect you. To anyone who hasn’t seen Sweeney’s earlier work, it may seem like she has surfaced out of nowhere. Yet she’s been honing her acting chops for years. She was just a child when she appeared in series like 90210 and Grey’s Anatomy before landing Euphoria, but there is no doubt that it is her portrayal of Cassie that launched what is now a stellar career. Thankfully, she is set to appear in Euphoria’s third season and has lined up roles in the AppleTV+ series Echo Valley (with Julianne Moore) and in Marvel’s Madame Web – a superhero film about a clairvoyant and precognitive mutant who helps other superheroes (starring Dakota Johnson). Sweeney will also play the lead in the horror movie Immaculate, written by acclaimed writer Andrew Lobel. She plays a woman of devout faith who is offered a job at an Italian convent. › 81 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

Admittedly, the thieves who embark upon such a daring undertaking have to be dedicated, organised, and above all smart, and some have been so good at their ‘job’ that they’ve stumped and outsmarted entire police forces and respective detectives for decades. Until recently, that is, for out of the ranks of the art dealers has come someone with the knowledge, tenacity, and sleuth-like smarts to turn the tables. Arthur Brand has been so successful in retrieving stolen artworks of importance that he has become known as the super detective of the artworld. Such is his growing reputation that for some he is like an adventurous character – the Indiana Jones of the art fraternity.

FROM SPANISH TO ART TO SLEUTH
How did it come to be that an art historian and dealer in antiquities has evolved into the foremost investigator in the world, someone capable of outdoing any collection of police departments and private investigators? The insurers of priceless art don’t care too much, they merely love this affable expert from Deventer in The Netherlands for the results he produces, for when the police cannot solve a case it is the private detective they turn to. “Others call me a detective,” says Arthur, “but I don’t really see myself that way. I think of my work as being intricately involved in art, and yes, I have gradually and more or less by coincidence moved from being an art historian and dealer to becoming an investigator, but it was something born out of a lifelong love of art and 85 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
fascination with the cases surrounding the disappearance of major pieces. I guess I just love a good brainteaser.” Brand’s career didn’t originally set him on this path. After graduating in history and Spanish he moved from The Netherlands to immerse himself in the language and cultures of Spain and Argentina, later returning to Amsterdam where he became part of the Dutch capital’s well-established world of antiquarians and art dealers. “I loved being surrounded by beautiful works of art that carried so much history and meaning,” but he soon found out there was a darker side too.
DELVING INTO THE NETHERWORLD OF ART
“Anything that has a great value attracts the darker side of human nature, and art is a fine example,” says Arthur. “However, because it is generally very difficult to make away with heavily guarded priceless works of art, the criminals involved tend to be highly intelligent and knowledgeable. Sometimes we can’t help but admire their audacity, and it was exactly that which got me so fascinated by great art heists.” ›

He began to study them, old and current, delving deep into the detail, the reports, media coverage, and also the cases that were successfully concluded with the recovery of the art and/or the apprehension of the thieves. “Working back, I began to recognise some patterns, get an idea of how these criminals’ minds work, and where they can and often do make mistakes, however small.” It has been a fascination that has led to Arthur Brand becoming the most successful art detective in the world, credited with dozens of high-profile recoveries with a collective value in the tens of millions. “It made me a favourite of the insurance companies, art lovers, and museums, but not with the fraternity of thieves and undercover dealers, so I realised I was hitting home
when I started to receive threats.” Undeterred, he continued his work, blessed with a knowledge of his subject, an analytical mind, and an eye for microscopic detail that together have seen him recover works as diverse as a 1,600-year-old mosaic, a Byzantine religious painting that had been missing for over 40 years, and Salvador Dali’s Adolescence.
RECOVERING TREASURES
Add to that Oscar Wilde’s ring, van Gogh’s The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen, Picasso’s Buste de Femme, Tamara de Lempicka’s La Musicienne and more recently historic art taken from a museum in Hoorn, and it becomes clear that Arthur Brand is himself a treasure to the artworld. The book, Hitler’s Horses, tells the story of Arthur Brand’s most unbelievable discoveries, all of which had their origins in his time in Spain, when he joined a group of Gypsies on a treasure hunt and found Roman coins. “It was so exciting, that was when my fascination with this line of work really began,” says the man who has singlehandedly solved more art heists than entire police forces. “I feel there are more left in me, ‘Indiana Jones’ isn’t ready to hang up his boots just yet.” WWW.ARTHURBRAND.COM INSTAGRAM: @ARTHURBRANDARTDETECTIVE

Not all movies and songs are the same, but for the past two decades or so digital remastering and streaming have flattened them without most of us even noticing. The result is a dull monotone – in the true sense of the word – in which everything is alright, but nothing is truly outstanding. See & Touch proves that it doesn’t have to be that way. They use modern technology paired with classic inspiration to restore high fidelity and make listening to music and watching films a true sensation that will fill your senses and stir emotions. A bold claim? Leon Naftaniel and his team invite you to put it to the test.
“A
whole generation has grown up listening to music without knowing what it’s like to really experience it,” says the founder of See & Touch, Leon Naftaniel. He knows what he’s talking about as he’s been designing and installing top-end audio and cinema systems for 35 years, starting with a showroom and design centre in Puerto Banús that opened in 1988. “We have since evolved into a custom integration company that can create the home entertainment or professional audiovisual system you desire, no matter how hightech or high-spec, and we work with architects and interior designers to ensure such standout features are fully integrated into the design and décor of the home or commercial premises.”
See & Touch also still sells, restores and maintains smaller home entertainment systems by top brands such as Bang & Olufsen, for whom they are the sole service centre south of Madrid. Beyond the impressive showroom there is a design office and a technical workshop that form the heart of what is a specialist sound engineering firm with a great deal of experience in designing made-to-measure home and professional systems. “Our base and much of our work is in Marbella and southern Spain, but our clientele has drawn us to projects around the world, from Europe and the Middle East to the Americas.” Projects include building a professional music studio in the Barbados villa of the manager of the Backstreet Boys, and a complete home system for Eva Longoria. ›

The company’s name communicates an implicit message, emphasising in this case the sensorial and emotional nature of music and film. “Hearing and sight are very likely our two most important senses, and they are strongly entwined with our emotions, so listening to music or watching a film should be a powerful, stirring experience,” says Leon. “The problem is that digital music mastering and streaming have taken the edge off the experience, creating a homogenous sound that either feels like a background hum or a loud noise.” Using the latest software developed by Apple, which rerecords sound in an all-around manner with surround speakers, combined with the finest equipment for each particular part, See & Touch brings back the full experience, and it is one that is hard to convey in words. “Of course, you have to experience it to know what it really feels like,” and indeed, it truly is an experience that touches the senses, whether you listen to fast, loud or relaxing music, Leon manages to bring not just
the very best out of the sound, but also the essence of the performance and the performer. In other words, there is immersion and engagement, as if you were at a live concert, but with far better sound. “Our designs take many things into consideration, including the right distance and positioning of the speakers and screen, and of course this rich sound experience also applies to films, where it is matched with a visual experience that you won’t forget in a hurry.”

that is intuitively easy to use. Therefore, you don’t just get the all-immersive viewing experience on the very latest film releases, but thanks to integration with Kaleidescape, who provide movies with the original sound and video, what you’re watching is not streamed but downloaded and plays to the best bitrate available, meaning that the quality is always consistently excellent. “And not just on the latest HDR films either, it works just as well on all your favourites going back years and years.” Not satisfied with even the best series-produced sound that money can buy, Leon started developing his own bespoke speaker systems, building on a lifetime of experience because he knew there was more quality to be had. “People don’t like to see speakers these days so they
mount them in the walls, putting them behind the cinema screen, which not only muffles the sound a little but also requires a rightangled mounting when they should be positioned at a 38-degree angle for perfect Dolby Surround Sound.” To overcome this, he has created the ultimate in speaker technology housed within a design that is so attractive you’d never want it hidden in a wall. The design is in many ways a pioneering departure from convention, with two sets of woofers placed in opposition to one another, in a manner that cancels out distortion and creates perfect bass. Instead of stacking in base-midrangetweeter order, Leon places the tweeter in the middle and sets the midrange at the top, slanted at a 30-degree angle for perfect balance. “Whether you watch a movie in surround
sound or listen to music in stereo, the resulting combination of this speaker system working in harmony with Christie projectors is a thing to enjoy, the last word in audio-visual experience in the world today.” He and his team have created a series of designs for the high-tech carbon fibre speaker sets that, like the highly successful professional cinema seats that See & Touch produce, cater to a wide range of tastes and decors yet can be finished in the tone, colour and material that the customer requires. “We even have a collection of art speakers that function like the world’s finest sound source but look like a gorgeous sculpture made to measure.”
TRY IT FOR YOURSELF
Lovers of cinema and music will experience them in a whole new way. “It’s fair to say that a world will open
up for you, giving your eyes and ears something to really get into.” See & Touch provide custom integrated audio and video entertainment systems that take things to the next level and do this both for private homes and commercial premises, but the scope extends beyond the home cinema, studio, or restaurant/nightclub venue. “If you want the same quality outdoors, in the garden, on your yacht, or fully integrated with your home automation on one handheld control, we’ll create it for you, including all-weather outdoor screens and unbelievably realistic

iPHONE 15 GET EXCITED ABOUT APPLE’S NEW LAUNCH! WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY APPLE
A
pple recently launched four new iPhone 15s, coming in black, blue, green, yellow and pink colours, piquing the interest of Apple fans who always need a good reason to trade in their old phones! As is the case with other iPhone models, there are four different versions of the iPhone15: the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The handsets were unveiled at Apple’s Wonderlust event
in September, but only became available recently. What is the difference between the various models, how has the series advanced from last year’s release, and which should you place into your (or a loved one’s) Christmas stocking? Read on to discover the answers to your questions.
THE SERIES
As mentioned, there are four models to choose from and two factors will most likely determine your choice: price and features such as memory and camera 114 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
quality. The more affordable iPhone15 and the iPhone15 Plus cost €959 and €1.109, respectively. Prices for the iPhone 15 Pro start at €1.219, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max will set you back around €1.469. One major difference iPhone 15 users as a whole will notice is the charger. Finally, they can say goodbye to their Lightning chargers and embrace the new USB-C chargers. This wasn’t Apple’s choice. The European Union now requires all phones, tablets, and cameras to use USB-C for charging before the end of 2024.

They boast a light yet sturdy titanium design, ultra-highresolution photographs, and the revolutionary A17 Pro chip, which delivers superior performance. The camera on the Pro models

THE IPHONE 15 VS THE IPHONE 15 PLUS Let’s take a look at the features that may determine your choice. Let’s start with size. The iPhone 15 has a 15.5 cm screen and reproduces up to 20 hours of video. The iPhone 15 Plus, is a little larger (at 17 cm) and reproduces up to 26 hours of video. These models have a 48-megapixel main camera, which is a major upgrade from the 12-pixel main camera of the iPhone 14. They are powered by an A16 Bionic chip and have a 2X sensor crop functionality, which provides a 2X zoom with high image quality. This feature makes these devices feel like they have a triple-camera system instead of just two cameras on the back.

comes with a new nanoscale coating that aims to reduce lens flare and eliminate the light dots you sometimes get with iPhone cameras. In addition to their 48-megapixel main camera, both have 12MP wide-angle cameras and 12MP telephoto cameras. Both have a 24MP default image size, plus a new Smart HDR feature. The Photonic Engine assures greater detail and works in Night mode. The new A17 Pro chip has a six-core central processing unit and a six-core graphics processing unit. That’s one more GPU core than the A16, which you can find in last year’s iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, and (as mentioned above) this year’s iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. The more advanced chip essentially enhances graphics performance, providing new gaming capabilities such as ray tracing (which allows for dramatically more lifelike shadows and reflections, along with enhanced translucence and 115 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

In 2024, you will be able to play games like Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 Remake.
MORE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE PRO AND THE PRO MAX ARE AS FOLLOWS:
» The Pro has a 15.5 cm screen, while the Pro Max has a 17 cm screen. » The Pro has a x3 telephoto lens and produces 23 hours of video. » The Pro Max has a x5 telephoto lens and reproduces up to 29 hours of video. And that about wraps our summary of four beautiful models that will undoubtedly be highly coveted this season. Which would you love to own? e

THE ART
OF URBAN CHIC IN MARBELLA BY BIJAN LAUFER
In an area dominated by residential areas and country clubs it is refreshing to work on something a little more urban in nature – so interior designer Bijan Laufer rose to the occasion and created a city townhouse in downtown Marbella where urban meets chic. hen Bijan Laufer made Marbella his primary abode he already had a world of experience as an interior designer and project manager, quite literally. “I have owned décor businesses and worked on design projects in places as diverse as Munich, Miami and Ko Samui, Thailand, and they together with my travels and life experiences have greatly enriched my sense of style, art, decoration, and materials,” says the affable designer. Marbella added to his range of experience with its own unique brand of style built around rich golden light, imposing sea views and a subtropical outdoor lifestyle. “Each location is subtly different in style, culture, and the feeling it creates, and these are the kind of details I love, as every new experience adds to your sensitivity and perspective as a designer.” This is of course also true of different property types and actual settings. ›

AN URBAN CHALLENGE From dressing classical homes in the historic quarter of Munich to adding cachet to Dubai and Miami penthouses or creating tropical villas on the Thai coast and sleek contemporary homes in the hills of Marbella, Bijan’s work has so far been highly diverse in scope and nature – a fact he is very grateful for. “I love it when projects are rather unique and pose a fresh challenge, giving the opportunity to work on something very different from your last design.”
122 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
Marbella is not best known for urban properties, but they do exist, so the team at The Art – the interior design and project studio founded by Bijan – were all the more excited when the chance arose to apply their creativity to a city centre townhouse and transform it into a luxurious downtown home right by the beach.
“Views, location and a touch of sophistication were key elements of this project, and they got the ball rolling.”

that makes the most of a new era of luxury, but this doesn’t mean that there can’t be classic inspiration in its styling. “In the end, it is the property, its setting, and of course the owner that defines a project and the course it follows in terms of the design choices made,” says Bijan, “and from this moment the creativity can flow.” ›

Indeed, it is once the parameters have been set and the main objectives determined – as to what kind of a house it should be and what functions it should fulfil, both practically and aesthetically – that creativity comes into play. “Form follows function, so creative ideas have to flow from a clear concept of what the end product will be, and this is both the difficult and the fun part.” He refers specifically to the challenge he sets himself to create a home that is not only

beautiful but also unique to itself. The result is something refreshingly different to the mainstream. The latest project by The Art is full of personality and inventive touches. Step into this home and you immediately sense the Art Deco inspiration with a contemporary feel. of the room’s décor. Black and white tones with red details and the linear language of Art Deco set the scene for a space that is both playful and stylish, and where modern furnishing forms a surprisingly impressive home. “It is a fun room, but with that element of urban sophistication that creates a sense of occasion,” says Bijan, who continued the theme with Art Deco inspired lighting and wall treatment, to which a suitably chic allblack billiards table adds the finishing touch. ›

Colour reappears in the immaculate living room, and it is a joyous feast for the eyes where tones and forms match with textures as diverse as cut glass and cut flowers. Now you may expect that the kitchen would be a solemn black affair, but it isn’t. WORDS BIJAN LAUFER
Marbella is renowned for its luxurious lifestyle, beautiful beaches, and upscale resorts. Consequently, interior design in Marbella is heavily influenced by the region's affluent clientele and the desire to create opulent, elegant, and often glamorous living spaces. Bijan Laufer from The Art Interior Design, brings you the latest trends.
THE BOUCLÉ IS BACK!
Interior designers in Marbella frequently incorporate luxurious materials such as marble, granite, onyx, and high-quality woods like walnut and mahogany. These materials exude sophistication and are often used for flooring, countertops, and custom-made furniture. One of the year’s most popular and luxurious furniture fabrics is Bouclé, pronounced as ‘booclay’, a textured fabric that has recently re-gained popularity in the luxury interior design world. It is characterised by its looped, curled, or knotted surface, creating a distinctively textured appearance. The word ‘bouclé’ is derived from the French word for curl which perfectly describes the fabric's unique texture. Here are a few points why bouclé is highly regarded.
130 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
»
LUXURIOUS TEXTURE
Bouclé fabric has a soft, plush texture due to its looped or knotted yarns. This luxurious feel makes it a desirable choice for upholstery, cushions, and throws in upscale interior spaces. The tactile pleasure it provides enhances the overall sensory experience in a room.
DURABILITY
VISUAL INTEREST
The loops and curls in bouclé fabric create visual interest and depth, adding a layer of complexity to the design. This texture can be especially effective in monochromatic or minimalist interiors, where it adds a touch of sophistication and breaks the visual monotony.
VERSATILITY
Bouclé fabric comes in a variety of colours and can be used in different interior design styles, ranging from contemporary to mid-century modern and even traditional. Its versatility allows designers to incorporate it into various pieces, such as sofas, chairs, pillows, and curtains, making it suitable for diverse design preferences.
131 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
Despite its soft and delicate appearance, bouclé fabric is surprisingly durable. The looped or curled yarns are tightly woven, providing strength and resilience. This durability ensures that furniture upholstered in bouclé can withstand regular use, making it a practical choice for both residential and commercial spaces.
TIMELESS ELEGANCE
Bouclé has a timeless quality that never goes out of style. Its classic texture and understated elegance make it a favourite among interior designers who aim for enduring and sophisticated designs. Whether used in furniture or decorative accessories, bouclé adds a touch of timeless charm to any interior space. ›

ACOUSTIC BENEFITS
In addition to its visual and tactile appeal, bouclé fabric can also contribute to improving the acoustics of a room. Its textured surface can help absorb sound waves, making it a practical choice for spaces where noise reduction is a consideration, such as in luxurious residential homes, upscale hotels, or highend offices.
LIFESTYLE | DESIGN
luxurious texture, visual interest, versatility, durability, timeless elegance, acoustic benefits, and eco-friendly options make it a highly desirable choice in luxury interior design. Whether used in furniture upholstery or decorative accents, bouclé adds a touch of sophistication and refinement to any space, making it a popular material among interior designers and homeowners alike.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
As sustainability becomes a more significant concern in interior design, bouclé fabric is available in eco-friendly options made from natural or recycled fibres. This aligns with the growing trend of incorporating sustainable materials into luxury interior spaces. In summary, bouclé fabric's 132 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN

THE CENTRO HIPERBÁRICO DE ESTEPONA
THE UNBEATABLE POWER OF
PURE OXYGEN
WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE CENTRO HIPERBÁRICO DE ESTEPONA
I
f you’ve walked along Estepona’s new paved Paseo Marítimo and your eyes have landed on the oceanfront clinic, the Centro Hiperbárico de Estepona, you may wonder if hyperbaric oxygen therapy is for a selected few, or for everyone. The question is tantamount to asking if only some of us need oxygen. Hyperbaric
therapy is a scientifically proven method for treating specific conditions (ranging from diabetic foot to post-surgical recovery). However, it is also a powerful way to battle stress, treat insomnia, and boost energy – and it can help halt ageing in its tracks. Therefore, the answer is yes – hyperbaric therapy is for everyone, including you.

“GIVING MORE OXYGEN IS NOT ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE, IT IS SOUND SCIENCE AND COMMON SENSE. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR OXYGEN.” PROFESSOR PHILIP B JAMES
AGAINST ALL ODDS
The Centro Hiperbárico de Estepona was opened in July of 2014 by Sady Alexandra Licintuña, a vibrant component of the local community and member and former President of the Rotary Club Estepona. Sady, who hails from Ecuador, has been living in Spain for 24 years and has called the Coast home for 13 years. She studied Business Administration, Accounting, and Systems Programming and spent many years in the real estate profession. Her interest in hyperbaric oxygen therapy arose when her husband, Jorge, suffered an acute myocardial infarction
and fell into a deep coma for three months. Sady grew determined to help him by becoming a nurse’s aide and immersing herself in research. She explains, “His prognosis wasn’t positive, so I began researching potential therapies to improve his condition. I discovered that hyperbaric medicine was the solution. I never imagined that it would be so effective or that it would help my husband live a normal life.” Hyperbaric chamber therapy helped improve the neurological disorders caused by the lack of cerebral oxygen Jorge had experienced. As a result, his mobility
147 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
improved – and so did his speech. He was thus able to communicate and enjoy a much better quality of life – one characterised by greater independence and a rich social life. At the time, Sady and Jorge were living in Madrid, and they decided to move to the Coast upon medical advice. Soon after, the doors of the Hyperbaric Centre opened up for the first time. Sady was determined to help people with a myriad of illnesses and disorders that could benefit from hyperbaric medicine. Since then, the centre has treated close to 2,000 patients of all ages. ›

HOW IT WORKS
If you’ve seen a hyperbaric chamber before then you may know that it’s a long, transparent tube where patients lie down to receive 100 per cent pure oxygen at high ambient pressures. This oxygen is dissolved in the body’s fluids (especially the blood plasma), boosting its transportation by over 23 times and reaching all the body’s tissues. This process transforms oxygen into medicine, wielding a host of therapeutic effects. For this reason, hyperbaric oxygen chambers are a staple at the world’s top hospitals and clinics. Currently, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is medically approved and is used to treat a myriad of conditions
LIFESTYLE | HEALTH
ranging from embolism to severe anaemia and wound healing. The patient does not have to do anything other than lie within the chamber for a specified time, relax and have a nap, watch TV, or listen to music.
ABOUT THE HYPERBARIC CHAMBERS AT THE CENTRO HIPERBÁRICO DE ESTEPONA
The Centro Hiperbárico de Estepona has two transparent monoplace oxygen chambers and both are state-of-the-art and the largest on the market. The fact they are transparent makes the experience considerably 148 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM
more comfortable, since the patient can see the entirety or the room as they lie inside. These chambers are the Sigma 36 and Sigma 40 models by renowned specialists, Perry Baromedical Corporation. They provide a constant 100 per cent oxygen concentration and the precise pressure required by hyperbaric medicine. Within the chamber, compression and decompression are adapted to each patient (at between 2 and 3 atmospheres absolute or A.T.A.), since each protocol is different. The oxygen in the chambers is continually renewed to keep the saturation levels at 100 per cent. ›
»
WHAT IS A VISIT TO THE CENTRO HIPERBÁRICO DE ESTEPONA LIKE?
The interior diameter is the widest in its category and the backrest can be regulated for greater comfort. The chambers have an interior entertainment system comprising images and sound and the interior temperature can be regulated. The patient enjoys direct visual and auditory communication with the operator of the chamber, which also adds a sense of calm and comfort to the experience.
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN HYPERBARIC MEDICINE TREAT?
At the Centro Hiperárico de Estepona, hyperbaric chamber therapy is offered for: » Slow-healing wounds (including diabetic foot and torpid ulcers) » Congenital and acquired neuropathies (including the aftermath of stroke and cerebral palsy) » Pain (specifically fibromyalgia – which the Centre treats with a signature protocol – plus migraines, osteomuscular pain, and neuropathic pain —including neuralgia) » Sports medicine – to speed up post-lesion recovery, support training, and aid in recovery from overtraining » Post-surgical recovery and recovery from fractures » To improve general health – including stress reduction, insomnia, energy boosting » Specific anti-ageing protocols
149 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
Before lying in the chamber, patients are seen by a specialist doctor who asks them an array of questions to determine if the treatment is right for them. If so, the patient is given a comfortable all-cotton top and trousers to don and then invited to lie inside the chamber for a specific number of minutes (which can vary depending on your condition). After the treatment, the staff conducts a follow-up to see how the treatment is working for the patient and to give further advice if necessary. The staff at the Centro Hiperbárico de Estepona receive continual training (in the form of courses and congresses) to update their knowledge. They form part of the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and the Spanish Association of Hyperbaric Medicine). WWW.CENTROHIPERBARICO.COM

he refined architectural styling of Sabinas
Over the past few years, we have come to know Real de La Quinta for a number of highly successful apartment projects such as Olivos and Quercus that form the initial phases of an ambitious country club development. Now this vision is beginning to take shape.
T
he idea of creating a large, luxurious country club on the edge of Nueva Andalucía is certainly ambitious, but the developers of Real de La Quinta are not new at this, having already created the original La Quinta resort, which has since become one of the most established residential sectors of the greater Marbella area. The neighbouring Real de La Quinta – set at the point where Marbella and Benahavís meet – will however be their opus, a masterpiece designed to become a landmark development in the region. ›

The plan envisages a gated country club environment made up of architecturally styled apartments and villas set within a verdant valley with spectacular sea and mountain views. The valley borders La Quinta and Nueva Andalucía and backs on to the extensive Sierra de las Nieves nature reserve, making this not only the country club nearest to Marbella but also one surrounded by open country. The focal point of this resort community will be a manmade lake bordered by walking paths, natural vegetation, a six-hole golf course, and El Lago Club sports centre with a gym, spa and wellness, a lakeside restaurant and racquet

club – and it’s all beginning to take shape. Within a short stroll from here an exclusive Angsana Real de La Quinta, Boutique Spa Hotel by the Banyan Tree Group will add to the pedigree of Real de La Quinta, which also boasts being the first development of its kind in Spain to be BREEAM certified. “Yes, you can definitely call this vision ambitious, even more so because we’ve overlaid the project with a desire to be environmentally responsible,” says Marisol Serrano, Sales Manager for the group, which was one of the first in the region to embrace the concept of sustainable development.

CREATING A WAY OF LIFE It is a vision that caught the imagination of the buying public early on, and if the initial projects were popular the new ones have enjoyed unrivalled success, with the apartments and penthouses of Sabinas selling all but seven of a total of 60 properties within less than a year. “They will be handed over to owners by the end of 2025, and our next project is Enebros, which occupies an even more amazing location, and will take design, amenities and quality of finishing to another level.” Complementing such projects created by the master developer are private
villas that share the stunning sea, mountain, valley and lake views. “Enebros will be a super elegant project of no more than 50 units, and we intend it to be our finest project yet.” As Real de La Quinta gathers momentum, it begins to take off more and more, with demand for the lifestyle being created here particularly strong. “Those who bought in the early phases of the resort are now reaping the benefits, with new buyers offering them significantly more than they originally paid, and there is every indication that this trend will continue with the new projects.” ›

The lifestyle offered at Real de La Quinta that is so highly desired starts with a gated country club resort community on the very edge of Marbella. Once you pass into the valley you enter a private world whose focal point is the El Lago Club environment. Pathways lead through curated nature, past a six-hole golf course that adds further greenery to the setting in a peaceful location within minutes of Marbella and the golf links of La Quinta and Nueva Andalucía. “This is what our residents look out on and form part of,” says Marisol, “and it is a lifestyle centred upon security, peace of mind, natural surroundings, healthy exercise, and quality amenities, apart from the inherent style and comfort of the properties themselves.” ›

ur party of four arrived at Besaya Beach on a typical Marbella day with a clear blue Sky and bright sunshine, ideal for a relaxing lunch in nice surroundings. The venue consists of an interior area with pristine dining tables, glassed in wine cabinets, bar, and kitchen, with an extensive exterior terrace running its full length affording panoramic views of the Mediterranean and Marbella. It was here that we were shown to our table, directly overlooking the beach and, with the scent of the sea air caressing our nostrils, we settled down on comfortable rattan chairs with soft cushions for the gourmet experience in store.
Our first impressions were of luxury and elegance and these became more pronounced as we perused the menu which is nicely separated into sections: From the Sea, From the Land, Fish and Meat dishes, as well as a number of Rice preparations and Tacos for sharing. The wine card also impressed, being presented in groupings pertaining to area rather than in a listing format, as did the cocktail menu, expertly curated by Nuria who is in charge of beverages for both restaurants. We shared a delicious Tuna Tartar with Wakame and Caviar and a creamy Avocado, Prawn and Mango Salad, together with a scrumptious Avocado Salad with Peppers, Feta Cheese and Basil Oil and a plate of crunchy Tacos with Tandoori Chicken,
all in agreement that enjoying fine fare in good company in a setting like this is one of life’s great pleasures. If the presentation of the starters had been impressive, the main courses were show stealers, in particular the Prawns Skewer, arriving with several King prawns suspended in a frame with intervening layers of purple onion, red, yellow and green peppers, over a bed of vegetables. to perfection with sliced garlic cloves, expertly filleted beside our table. Meanwhile, the Mongolian Beef just melted in the mouth, prepared from tender strips of spiced beef caramelised in the wok with spring onions, served with rice. Last, but by no means least, their Famous Hot Stone Prime Cut Beef Sirloin was enticing indeed, the hot stone permitting cooking to individual preference. With some excellent blush rosé, endearing ambient music, and convivial chat, our visit had become an immersive experience. All good things come to an end, unfortunately, but not quite yet. It was so relaxing being there that we gave in to temptation and shared the house Homemade Cheesecake for dessert. Following the quality of everything that had come
before, it was no surprise to receive a very authentic cheesecake which really hit the mark. Besaya Beach is a popular restaurant that remains open year round, the folding glass doors, underfloor warming, and heating ensuring diners are equally comfortable on cooler days. READY FOR A STAR-STUDDED 2024
DIEGO GALLEGOS
OF SOLLO
Evolution is part of every chef’s trajectory, but despite changing demands, world trends and circumstances, great chefs remain true to their essential values. And it is a pleasure to see that Diego Gallegos, the chef of the Michelin-starred establishment Sollo at the Reserva del Higuerón, very much subscribes to this point of view. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SOLLO

ssential Magazine was lucky to interview Diego in 2016, when the restaurant had recently opened its doors at Reserva del Higuerón resort in Fuengirola – home to a Curio Collection by Hilton hotel, as well as a chic tennis club. Within this tranquil oasis, Diego sought to do the unheard-of and meticulously crafted a tasty menu that was centered on fish and caviar. And we aren’t talking about the typical fish you might find at a restaurant. Instead, the chef sought to tantalise diners’ taste buds with delicacies such as sturgeons, tilapias, catfish, and eels. His tasting menu revealed that you can, indeed, craft a varied, imaginative, visually stunning offering with an array of impeccable bases and sauces – and without a single meat dish! ›

The name of Diego’s menu is Caminho (The Path) and it pays homage to his Brazilian roots, as well as to his determination to tread his own course. At the heart of everything he does at Sollo is his passion for sustainability and his respect for the environment. Another pillar of his cooking is health. Concerned about the number of pesticides and chemicals found in wild fish, he turned to aquaponics. Sollo has an impressive installation close by where a host of fish are raised sustainably. at a tilapia fish farm and puts his knowledge to good use here. The chef is additionally known as the ‘King of Caviar’, owing to the protagonist of this delicacy in his tasting menu. He worked as a consultant for Caviar de Riofrío, honing his knowledge in this specialised field. Talking to Diego recently was like coming full circle. He recalls Sollo’s first dishes and comments on the evolution of his cuisine, nevertheless sounding like the chef I first met when he passionately speaks about the restaurant’s new

aquaponic installations, set to open in December. Diego and his team also tend to a lovely organic garden of their own, where they grow delicious tomatoes and a host of endemic plants that once abounded in the area. “We propagate plants that are now rare to find, including European wasabi (whose leaves have a piquant, mustardy flavour), Jambu (with brings out acidic flavours and is known for its energy-imbuing qualities), and estelaria (acclaimed for its aphrodisiac powers and once commonly used in infusions).

His tasting menu is a true spectacle for the taste buds and sense of sight. Things are sometimes not what they seem, yet with one bite you encounter familiar flavours and textures that enrapture you in childlike enjoyment. The 15-dish menu contains delights like the Seaweed and Carp Taco, Ecological Trout with Iberian Ham Consommé and Roast Garlic, and Trout with foie and tuber crème. Diego has been busy with the annual event, Diego and Friends, featuring special evenings in which the chef prepares enticing tasting menus alongside renowned chefs from across Spain. This year, he has invited stalwarts the likes of Martina Puigvert and David Yárnoz, Maca de Castro and João Rodrigues, Rodrigo de la Calle and Randy Siles, and Pepe Solla and Rodrigo Castelo. During these evenings, he works
alongside two other chefs to create a meal that bursts with creativity. “Pepe Solla was already a renowned chef when I started, so it’s an honour to invite him to Sollo.” Diego is also excited about Sollo’s New Year’s Eve menu. As might be expected on a night as special as this, the menu is crafted to appeal to a wide range of palates. “We will be offering some classic Sollo dishes, but others that have been created specifically for this evening,” says Diego. Diners will savour specials like lobster, a signature mousse made with Málaga honey (decorated with chocolate bees), and unique dishes like sturgeon served with a sauce made from chicken wings and liver. The aim, he says, is “to serve dishes that have a traditional 187 | DECEMBER 2023 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
winter meat feel, but are prepared with fish.” Without a doubt, Sollo and Diego have a stellar year ahead – which in itself is testimony to the value of being true to yourself. WWW.SOLLO.ES

oët & Chandon is a giant in the Champagne industry and it is still growing. Founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, a broker and wine producer from the Grande Vallée de la Marne, it has become famous for its very high quality of production and today Moët completely dominates the Champagne export business. It currently belongs to the LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) Group, a world leader in luxury and sophistication. Essential Magazine recently had the privilege to interview Xavier Monclús, Wine Education Manager and Brand Ambassador of Moët Hennessy Iberia, at Michelin-starred Restaurante El Lago. The occasion comprised a special pairing of distinct vintages of Moët & Chandon with creative dishes prepared by Head Chef, Fernando Villasclaras. Xavier Monclús enthralled the invited diners with his in-depth lucid presentation of the vintages being tasted and on how to serve and enjoy fine Champagne. ›

WHICH VARIETIES OF GRAPES ARE USED FOR THE MOËT IMPÉRIAL AND ROSÉ IMPÉRIAL CHAMPAGNES?
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT VINTAGES OF MOËT & CHANDON. CAN YOU SUMMARISE THE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES?
Indeed, there are numerous vintages, and the distinctions primarily lie in the duration the wine rests in our cellars, creating diverse layers of flavours and aromas. The Collection undergoes a complex ageing process, involving bottle positioning in the early stages, manual disgorgement, and an extended resting period after dosage – a true monument of Aged Champagne. It stands as an unrivalled Champagne in terms of price/value, making it a musthave. To commemorate the 280th anniversary of
our house founded in 1743, we’ve crafted Moët & Chandon Collection Impériale Creation No. 1, a multi-vintage prestige cuvée, intended as the first in a series of exceptional cuvées leading up to Moët’s 300th anniversary in 2043. This glorious cuvée is based on the 2013 vintage, aged in stainless steel vats, blended with reserve wines from five additional vintages, each briefly aged in 5,000-litre oak casks. It also includes 15 per cent of Champagne from the 2004 vintage, aged in bottles under a crown cap. Our first zero dosage Champagne marks a significant departure, and in my opinion, it has been well worth it.

Moët is the ‘Maison of the trilogy,’ signifying our commitment to bringing the best of the character of the three grapes to our wines. We consistently use Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Chardonnay, with each grape expressing its unique charisma, contributing to the final blend. The Rosé Imperial has a higher percentage of Pinot Noir and less Chardonnay employed in its production. WHERE ARE THE VINEYARDS LOCATED?
The vineyards are spread throughout the Champagne region. We like to say that a bottle of Brut Imperial is a perfect compilation of the best grapes from the entire Champagne region. ARE ALL OF THE VINTAGES ELABORATED EACH YEAR, OR ONLY IN YEARS WHERE THE GRAPE HARVEST IS OUTSTANDING?
The concept of ‘vintage’ inherently implies outstanding quality. Our strict policy entails no vintages in a mediocre year. ›

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE GRAND VINTAGE COLLECTION? ARE THEY THE ONLY BOTTLES OF MOËT TO HAVE THE YEAR OF ELABORATION ON THE EXTERIOR?
The Grand Vintage bottles feature a beautifully chalkwritten year on the label. Unlike most Champagnes, those in the Grand Vintage Collection are only made from the grapes of a single exceptional year. Each Grand Vintage is unique. HOW CAN YOU MAXIMISE THE ENJOYMENT OF DRINKING CHAMPAGNE?
GOURMET | WINE
The enjoyment depends on the type of Champagne being consumed. Whether it’s a Champagne with cellaring potential or a young, fresh one with predominantly primary aromas. The first step is always to give the Champagne the time it needs. Once it reaches the optimal moment, avoid compromising the experience with a sub par glass – opt for a proper wide and super-thin glass. Temperature is crucial; for different Champagnes, ranging from 5 to 9 degrees Celsius is suitable, with older varieties requiring less cold,

even as high as 12 degrees for certain cuvées. CAN CHAMPAGNE ACCOMPANY ALL THE COURSES OF A MEAL?
Absolutely, yes. However, for sweet desserts, I recommend a demi-sec Champagne. IS CHAMPAGNE USED AS AN INGREDIENT IN COCKTAILS?
Historically, Champagne has been an enhancing ingredient for cocktails. The term ‘Royal’ applied to a cocktail signifies it has been created with Champagne, not any other sparkling wine. Well-known cocktails like Mimosa, Kir Royal, and Negroni Sbagliato (highly recommended) feature Champagne. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO PRESERVE A BOTTLE OF FINE CHAMPAGNE, AND HOW LONG CAN IT GENERALLY BE STORED WITHOUT AFFECTING THE QUALITY?
Champagne is a long keeper, with some reaching their peak after 10 or 20 years. It is best stored at a constant temperature around 10-13ºC. However, this doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy it earlier. In fact, 90 per cent of the time, when released, Champagne is ready to drink. e
