What does Denmark conjure up to us all? Pastries, bacon and cured herring, Carlsberg beer and Lurpak butter; and Noma restaurant that champions the New Nordic cuisine. Danish design with its egg chair and artichoke lamp, its lego and wind turbines. Cinema and ‘Dogme 95’, ‘Borgen’ and ‘The Killing’. Helena Christensen and also Hans Christian Andersen, immortalised by the iconic Little Mermaid statue.

For sheer comfort and ease, for rest and repose, for good vibes and bonhomie, I strongly recommend Denmark. How easy a country to get around and a holiday to manage. And what an inspiring people. Indeed when I travel I like to develop a mosaic of the generic looks that typify a nation. In Denmark all appear to sport a grin and to shun a grimace. No one uses titles and no one wears a tie. Danes are fresh and

direct and trusting and secure. Indeed it’s often dubbed the ‘world’s happiest country’. As their renowned philosopher Søren Kierkegaard declared, “livet forstås baglæns men må leves forlæns” (“life is understood backwards but must be lived forwards”). The gap between rich and poor is one of the lowest in the world. And only in Denmark could there be a board game called ‘Konsensus’ based around the concept of collaboration. ›

Denmark is made up of around 400 islands, even more than Greece, and it’s almost as flat as Holland with its highest point at just above 500 feet. Indeed Copenhagen resembles Amsterdam with her abundant canals and bikes. For refreshingly, car is not ‘king’ as a third of Copenhageners cycle to work, even enjoying their own traffic lights that let them set off a few seconds before the cars. And it’s from this comparative lack of combustion for a capital city that I could hear her church bells toll and walk breezily along her cobbled streets that comprise the spacious pedestrian

shopping district of Stroget. Her skyline is mercifully spared the usual high-rised constructions allowing me to appreciate the many kinds of church steeples from the oriental to the western (with its Roman baroque versions of St. Peters to Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza).

I loved visiting Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our Lady), a cathedral under whose expansive coffered nave is a super pure, super white, uncluttered interior with only statues of the twelve apostles for adornment. Presiding over the altar is the simple but imposing figure of Christ fronting a backdrop of gold as the one hint of colour.

I also walked along Christiania, a former military base and now commune, past bike rental and bric-a-brac shops beside the canal with its houseboats to the bridge across to Nyhavn. And beautifully positioned along Nyhavn, this 17thcentury waterfront lined with brightly coloured townhouses, is Kompasset ( www. restaurantkompasset.dk ) a restaurant with taste, simplicity and a super cosy feeling. All in keeping with their word ‘hygge’ meaning a quality of cosiness and conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment and which is the epitome of Danish culture. ›

Here too I discovered the drinking toast across Scandinavia involves declaring the word “skål”! (pronounced “skoal”) which has a somewhat macabre background as it originally meant ‘skull’ and refers to a custom practiced by the warlike Vikings who used the dried-out skulls of their enemies as drinking mugs. Food has an equally inventive vocabulary in the Danish dictionary I rifled through. For the names of traditional Danish pastry (‘wienerbrød’) there’s ‘kanelsnegle’ (cinnamon snail), ‘spandauer’ (baker’s bad eye after the yellow cream in the middle) and ‘frøsnapper’ (frog snapper). As for a longer

word, I found the intriguing ‘palaegschokolade’ for chocolate in thin slices for sandwiches.

Formerly Denmark’s first public hospital, and housed in a magnificent 18th century Rococo building, is the Design Museum (www. designmuseum.dk/en/). It has decorative art and a heritage collection in one half and its modern day and cutting-edge Danish 21st century design in the other. The museum is beautifully styled and presented and has just the right number of rooms that surround a square garden lined with gorgeous linden trees that offer a welcome respite. It all very successfully develops its theme of ‘past, present

and future’ and I found it truly a font of inspiration. I also reached Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. Truly a playground for young and old and a spot so full of wonder that it inspired Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney. It’s set conveniently right by Central Station, and so seamlessly on I continued by train to the sound and the strait, the area north of the capital that is North Zealand. It overlooks the famous Øresund Strait and is protected over the Baltic at Helsingør by Kronborg Castle which provided the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet known to us as Elsinore.

Design Museum

Only forty minutes away on a regular train service is this town of Helsingør and the second leg of my journey. Once Denmark’s second largest town, it’s reminiscent of both Hansel and Gretel as well as the Gingerbread Man with its yellow and terracotta painted houses and its grid of streets parading shops that, amusingly to English eyes, make all too clear to all their trade with names like ‘Home’ the Estate Agent, ‘FixPhone’ and ‘YouSee’ the optician.

North Zealand is nicknamed the Danish Riviera or the Danish Côte d'Azur but has none of their flashiness or artifice, or the moneyed

opulence of the Hamptons, as the Danes come for their summer holidays. More bikes and boats than bucket and spade, there’s a joyful sense of entire generations of families collected around pontoons with diving boards and among the boats, the picnic tables and the villas with their private beaches and their views across to Sweden.

I stayed at Hotel Villa Brinkly (www.brinkly.dk). It’s a hidden gem sandwiched between the sea and a forest.

Indeed the Egebæksvang Forest is perfect for a proper stroll or ‘forest bathing’, the simple and modern method of being calm and quiet among the trees, and the beach on the Øresund strait offers an uplifting vista across to Sweden. The hotel is set on Strandvejen, the forty-kilometre beach road, which winds along the coast from Copenhagen to beyond Elsinore. ›

I felt instantly becalmed by the neutral and serene colours and the peaceful vibe. It originally opened in 1933 for retired seafarers whose culture is reflected in the antiques and artefacts. It has a real heart into which I was invited like a personal

drawing room in this relaxed and airy wooden Danish hotel. This sense of soothing and calm is all the result of the loving care of its hosts Erik and Annette.

This chalet-cum-beach house with its distinctive navy-blue colour has eight

cabin-style rooms and one family suite with panelled ceilings and pine walls, naval artefacts, and each possess its own outdoor terrace and furnished patio. There are views either of the waterfront and sea in front or the forest with its gorgeous avenue of trees behind. In the foreground is the yard where the owners grow their own herbs and vegetables and tend to their pair of Guinea pigs. All very heavenly, homely and grounding. ›

I went on a shortish bike ride down to Humlebæk to the Louisiana Art Gallery (www. louisiana.dk/en/). It attracts connoisseurs from all over the world and, along with the new Munch museum in Oslo, is Scandinavia’s premier modern art gallery. In, and extending from, this former gorgeous family summer house and, tucked beneath the sculpture gardens that roll down to the sparkling and serene waterside, is an endless cavern of halls sufficient to house four extensive exhibitions at any given time alongside the museum’s permanent

collection. It’s very good value at DKK 145 and is a full day out.

Almost like a museum in itself, and as another part of my full day out, I had lunch across the road at Gamle Humlebaek Kro (www. gamlehumlebaekkro.dk) which goes all the way back to 1682 as a former staging post along the Strandvejen, nicknamed ‘the nobleman’s highway’. The restaurant is like an alpine chalet and very popular with the locals which is always a good sign.

There’s cycling and there’s recycling. For everywhere the Danish are committed to recycling and passionate about the environment; for being eco-friendly is seen as a basic duty and something you do to be a part of Danish society. Indeed Noma, the famous restaurant meaning

‘mad Nordic food’, uses fresh and wild natural ingredients that are often foraged.

Open from March to October, which encompasses the full Danish holiday season, is Café Vitus. Set in a modest hut and overlooking Snekkersten harbour, it’s full of the local community with their dogs and prams, their bicycles and boats. There’s nothing quite like a marina to eat beside and watch as fellow diners moor, eat and sail off again. It’s where local celebrities gather in a low-key environment, seemingly anonymous among the pink hydrangeas and outside the simple shedcum-chalet that belies the artistry of the food. Here I enjoyed the freshest of shrimp and avocado salad before a deliciously naughty treat of hot chocolate with cream. A hidden gem. ›

Back from the coast, streets of identikit bungalows provide homes that are rigorously neat, minimalist and full of designer touches, as these zen-like homes possess a Danish aesthetic that’s heavily influenced by the German Bauhaus school. They use plenty of natural materials like leather and wood, and lots of lamps, with natural shapes

like fir cones, are typically placed in the middle of rooms and imperative no doubt in winter months.

As for tips, like much of Scandinavia it is expensive to the British purse but the Danish are not accustomed to tipping waiters or taxi drivers who are obliged to have a bike rack to take you home if you have had two too many glasses of

There is something uniquely romantic and nostalgic about taking a train ride. As Paulo Coelho so eloquently espouses, it’s all about living the moment, taking in the beauty of the moving masterpiece outside your window, and remaining ‘in the present moment’ while the train moves onward into the future. Train rides are long and leisurely and they enable us to strengthen our connections with our loved ones but also journey inwards and connect with our inner child.

So many scenes from memorable movies have taken place on trains. From Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest to Sydney Lumet’s Murder on the Orient Express, trains have served as a glamorous backdrop to action, love, and mystery. They have steeped characters in luxury and elegance and

many would say that the idea of travel itself –especially when a long journey is involved – is intrinsically romantic. It makes us wonder about other travellers’ lives, motivations and passions.

Train travel has also taken the tourism industry by storm, with passengers often booking way in advance to experience a ride in Seven Stars’ Kyushu

train in Japan (whose interiors are fully crafted by Japanese artisans), the Belmond Andean Explorer in South America (weaving through the Peruvian Andes at 4,267 metres), or the Venice SimplonOrient-Express (a 1920s-inspired art deco train that transports passengers through the breathtaking beauty of the French countryside and Swiss Alps). ›

Hoever, you don’t need to go very far to experience the adventure of a luxury train ride. You can do so right here in the south of Spain, thanks to the AlAndalus Train – which extends a myriad of itineraries that pass through some of Andalucía’s most beautiful cities and unique landscapes, and offers travellers a taste of the very best that Spanish gastronomy has to offer. There are additional routes that travel to the North, making this train one of the hardest-working in its class in Europe.

THE TRAIN

The Al-Andalus Train symbolises the epitome of 20th-century luxury, with

carriages that were once used by the British monarchy to travel between Calais and the Côte d'Azur in the roaring 1920s. It is the longest train on Spanish tracks, measuring 450 metres in length (comparable to a 150-storey skyscraper, were it positioned vertically). It comprises 14 carriages and accommodates up to 74 people.

There are are two wagons for the restaurant area, and one each for the kitchen, bar, playroom, crew, and generator zones. There are seven bedroom carriages, where guests can rest while the train speeds ahead by night.

Two particularly elegant wagons are the Giralda Lounge (which houses

an elegant bar) and the Medina Azahara, which is steeped in vintage charm and comprises a lounge and games area. These are ideal spots for spending time with loved ones and meeting other voyagers who share one’s passion for travel and the culinary arts.

THE ART OF DINING

You certainly will be spoiled for choice if food is your passion. Breakfast is served daily in the Alhambra and Gibralfaro restaurants, where you can opt for a buffet meal or order à la carte. You can also tuck into a myriad of lunches and dinners prepared by prestigious chefs, who specialise in breathing new life into traditional Spanish dishes. ›

As mentioned, there are seven bedrooms to choose from. If you’re a history buff, take note. Five of them are located in original Wagons-Lits wagons dating back to 1929. They have been painstakingly renovated to whisk guests back into one of train travel’s most glorious eras.

REGULAR ITINERARIES

The train offers two main itineraries, with tickets still available for various dates in June, July, October, and November. Tickets are sold out as we go to print for some routes in June, July,

September and October.

The first excursion is from Sevilla to Málaga and commences at the iconic Alfonso XIII Hotel. From there, expert guides take travellers to the historic quarter of the city, revealing wonders such as the cathedral (crowned by the Giralda), the Royal Alcázar (the oldest royal palace in use in Europe), and the former Jewish quarter of Santa Cruz. After an exquisite meal at the Hotel, you are taken on a bus ride to the gorgeous Plaza de España, then to the station to board the train.

This route makes it way through some of the most beautiful cities in the south, including Jerez, Cádiz, Ronda, Córdoba, Úbeda, Baeza, Granada, and Málaga. Guided visits are taken to must-see

spots, including the historic city centre of Cádiz, the white village of Ronda, the Alameda del Tajo, the Córdoba mosque, La Alhambra, and more. The journey ends with a leisurely lunch at the Hotel AC by Marriot Málaga Palacio, with guests saying their farewells at around 5pm.

The second route goes from Málaga to Seville, taking in the beauty of all the aforementioned sites and natural wonders.

Founded in 1984 by Richard Saul Wurman as a non-profit organisation aiming to bring together experts from the fields of Technology, Entertainment, and Design, TED (alongside its sister TEDx chapters) has become a Mecca of ideas for audiences from all walks of life. On June 9, the first-ever TEDx Marbella will be taking place at Andalucía Lab.

Organised by Amine Berraoui (international entrepreneur and catalyst), Kirsten de Bouter Shillam (communicator and speaker), and Ali Parandeh Zandpour (entrepreneur and mentor to startups and other entrepreneurs), the event will bring the magic of TED talks to the Coast for the first time.

WHAT ARE TEDX EVENTS?

TEDx events are local gatherings where live talks and performances are shared with the community. They are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis. Their content and design are unique and independently developed,

As stated by event organiser, Ali Parandeh, creating a shortlist of speakers for TEDx Marbella was a challenging task. “We received many applications, and made our choices based on two factors. Speakers had to have an idea worth sharing, and they had to tackle a unique topic. The talks also have to reflect the different phases of a startup’s journey.” The list of speakers is as follows:

Steve Payne is a leadership and communication skills specialist, public speaking coach, actor, writer, and founder of the Academy of Coaching and Training (ACT). He is one of very few certified Master Trainers of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and currently sits on the external verification panel for the Association for Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). He has directed and produced documentaries and films, and is the co-author of the critically acclaimed book, My 31 Practices He trains and certifies professional

coaches and Practitioners of NLP and is a personal and professional development expert who helps businesses and business leaders communicate more effectively.

2 – PERCY ROLAND

Percy Roland leads a double life – as a public speaker and as a high-end real estate agent. He has won multiple international public speaking competitions and sold multi-million euro properties in Marbella to discerning international clients. In his TedX speech, he will share vital lessons about how to deal with impossible situations. He will also be sharing

Anna Anderson has founded two highly successful wellness businesses. Her debut book sold over 50,000 copies in the first year, garnering her number one best-selling author status. She leads an engaged community of over 11,000 women who are focused on their wellbeing, and her life-changing retreats are sold

out a year in advance. She is a powerful storyteller and uses her personal experience, along with science- and evidencebased techniques, to teach her audiences how to create success internationally.

Izidro Sousa is an IT project manager, speaker, and communication coach with extensive experience in the field of Information Technology. He has worked as a computer programmer, systems analyst, project manager, and director/ head of department, and has a proven track record of delivering projects and managing projects and teams. As a communication coach, he helps individuals

overcome their fear of public speaking and deliver impactful presentations.

5 – DIEGO JUELA

Diego Juela is originally from Ecuador and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Chemical Nano-Engineering in France, Poland, and Italy with the Erasmus Mundus scholarship. After suffering exclusion during his undergraduate program on account of his visual disability, he committed himself to changing the way disability is viewed by society. As a science student, he has strived to develop ways to increase equity and inclusion in research and academia. Recently, he founded ScienDis, a global network for people with

disabilities pursuing a STEM career, with the aim of increasing the representation of this minority in science.

6 – MARTA PARDO

Marta Pardo has a 27-year track record in customer experience, motivation and leadership, having worked in hotel management in France and excelling in firms such as The Walt Disney Company, Marriott International, and Accor Hotels. She wishes to share her racing driver-style management method, called P-ROAD. It involves improving the customer experience, increasing motivation and the sense of belonging to a group, and increasing trust through teamcentred leadership. ›

7– CEPEE TABIBIAN

At the age of 35, Cepee Tabibian upended her entire life by selling her belongings and moving to Europe – since then, she has never looked back. She now teaches other women how to do the same through her company, She Hit Refresh, a global community of over 10,000 women aged 30 and over who want to move abroad. She turned her overseas expertise into the digital book I’m Outta Here! An American’s Ultimate Visa Guide to Living in Europe – which was featured in Forbes.

8 – FRANCK BENHAMOU

Franck Benhamou is a corporate executive-turned-entrepreneur, digital nomad, and minimalist.

His early career included various positions lasting over 16 years at SC Johnson & Son in marketing, and general management across the world (USA, USSR, Spain, Ukraine, UK, Russia). He left the corporate world to be an early participant in the digital revolution and created his first Internet company in the year 2000. His latest venture, launching this August, is called the Fans League. It is the first fact-based, season-long competition to rank sports fans around the world.

Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and thought-provoking case for building an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity. His

contention is that creativity is now as vital in education as literacy, and it should be given due importance.

He notes that the current educational system dissuades children from studying arts, wrongly telling them there is no future in fields like music, dance, or theatre. This leads many brilliant, creative people to doubt their own intelligence and to distance themselves from their talents and passions. REVUELTO PLUG-IN HYBRID

Lamborghini has been producing its impressive Aventador now since 2011 so it’s had a very long run for a supercar. The Aventador is now history and its recently announced replacement, the 2024 Revuelto, presents more than a few surprises.

For starters, it is not a dedicated electric vehicle as might have been expected. It’s a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and at its heart is a very traditional Lamborghini mid-mounted petrol-fuelled V-12 boosted by three electric motors. Lamborghini describes the car as a ‘high performance electrified vehicle,’ rather than a PHEV. There are many automotive analysts who regard plug-in hybrids as the best of all worlds

and few enthusiasts will complain about the whopping 1001-horsepower generated by the (non-turbo) V-12 and its trio of electric motors. The Revuelto is the most powerful Lamborghini ever built and even upstages the Ferrari Stradale PHEV. Two of the electric motors power the front wheels so this is an all-wheel drive vehicle. Lamborghini was a pioneer with AWD supercars and was marketing them long before most rivals. ›

The Revuelto name, as with most Lamborghini models over the decades, comes from that of a fighting bull, though few but aficionados are likely to know that. Lamborghini’s iconic nameplate has always depicted a fierce bovine. It’s no surprise that the Revuelto’s bodywork is as striking and as headturning as they come. As many observers have noted, it uses design cues from several Lamborghinis over the years right back to the fabled Countach. Thankfully, this approach has not created a discordant look and certainly the car is more than a match for many of its competitors as far as styling goes. The magnificent V-12 can be viewed through a

glass panel just behind the cabin. It’s doubtful whether electric motors will ever be enjoyed in quite the same way.

Structurally, the Revuelto is based on a rigid carbon fibre monocoque and Lamborghini points out that much of the inspiration came from the aerospace industry, even describing the body as a ‘fuselage.’ This kind of design creates optimum rigidity wherever it’s needed, body flexing being something of a curse with many high performance cars. Building the car around such a structure is certain to enhance driving enjoyment in the best possible way, though this is a costly route to take.

The scissor doors are fabricated from aluminium and some bumper components are thermoplastic. › Other technology doesn’t break any dramatically new ground for a car like this but the approach has been evaluated and perfected on many other Lamborghinis. The suspension is double wishbone, front and rear and the car uses big carbon ceramic brakes with ten pistons at the front and four at the rear. There’s an active rear wing that has three positions for optimal downforce as needed. Huge 21-inch alloy wheels set off the wedgeshaped package nicely. Four wheel steering is standard on the Revuelto.

The cockpit is a delightful place to enjoy the Revuelto driving experience and is a feast of fine leathers and fabrics. The seats are sculpted for maximum grip in tight cornering. The car uses three screens –a digital array for the driver plus an 8-4-inch touchscreen at the centre of the console. There’s a narrow 9.1inch display on the passenger side above the glove compartment. As with so many cars in this class, cabin stowage space is not as generous as it might be. One major novelty is a choice of no less than 13 driving modes, some associated with the hybrid system. Modes

are chosen using a control on the chunky leather steering wheel, which is flattened at its base for thigh clearance.

Although some people will be disappointed that Lamborghini didn’t go all-electric with this one, we’d guess that most potential buyers will warmly celebrate the fact that big V-12s have life in them yet, even if electric motors do play a role. Few will disagree that the Revuelto is a thoroughly worthwhile successor to the muchloved Aventador and hopefully it will match that Lambo’s long life and impressive sales record. e

This meeting may have been Aubrey’s lucky break, but her ascent has been long and meticulous in the making. She has been acting since she was in high school, and completed a degree in film studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She honed her craft in the most challenging way possible –by performing improv and sketch comedy.

The White Lotus

She didn’t have to wait long to get noticed by film producers. In 2009, just a few years after graduating, she was already working alongside kings of comedy like Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, and Will Arnett. In addition to garnering laughs, she has also received critical acclaim, particularly for her role in Safety Not Guaranteed – her first lead role in a major film. The movie took its premise from a classified ad run a few years ago seeking a companion for a time travel experiment. The ad gave readers a now-iconic warning: “Safety is not guaranteed.” Aubrey plays a young intern set to investigate the story alongside a cynical reporter who initially fails to see her potential. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Gary Thompson highlighted her “unusual kind of beauty (Anglo-Irish/Latina) that the camera loves to explore” and her compelling jump from boredom and jadedness to sincerity and initiative. ›

Many critics (before and after) have been equally besotted. Vulture’s Emily Yoshida, for instance, referred to the authentic sense of warmth Aubrey brings to her misanthropic characters. This quality abounded in her performance in White Lotus, in which her blasé acceptance of her passionless relationship was peppered with moments of pain and frustration owing to her partner’s cold rejection. The show received rave recognition, winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Limited Series and garnering Plaza a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

After White Lotus, she has worked on a wide array of

projects, each with a very distinct feel. Earlier this year, she hosted Saturday Night Live, an honour reserved to Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars. It was sweet justice, because earlier in her career, she had auditioned for the show, but failed to make it to the final round. She did land a job for the show as an intern in the set design department, though she says she spent most of her time “lurking in the shadows” and stalking the talent.

She was fabulous as always in Guy Ritchie’s action-packed, James Bondstyle action film, Operation Fortune, in which she starred alongside Jason Statham and Hugh Grant, and she

is completely compelling in the highly rated, Emily the Criminal. Moreover, she will soon be producing and starring in Olga Dies Dreaming (a drama about a Nuyorican brother and sister trying to make it big in New York).

As far as acting goes, expect to see her soon in the romantic comedy My Old Ass, the sci-fi drama Megalopolis (directed by Francis Ford Coppola), and the series, Agatha: Coven of Chaos (featuring characters from the Marvel cinematic universe). If her choice of roles is proving one thing, it is that she is full of surprises –but that’s something her fans have known for a long time! e

THE AI REVOLUTION HAS BEGUN

And then it was there. Launched to the public in November 2022 after a period of testing, ChatGPT has taken the world by storm. But what exactly is it, how does it work, and what does its arrival spell for the immediate future?

ChatGPT is the chatbot application of GPT-3, the third-generation Generative Pretrained Transformer. A classic example of AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology of the kind that is about to grow exponentially and invade the way we work and live, it scours the Internet through a neural network model with over 175 billion machine learning parameters to create machine-generated text, code, and imaging that replicates the human equivalent.

In other words, humans have lost the monopoly on this kind of creation, and it is only the beginning of an AI process that will affect most walks of life, from hotel receptionists and waiters to surgeons, pilots and lawyers. Type in a brief outline of what you’re searching for and ChatGPT will produce a very feasible text, body of code, or even matching imagery out of the immense bulk of content already out there on the net. Its advantage is that it does it within seconds, for a

relatively small subscription fee, and it is increasingly humanlike and free of errors. The disadvantages include the fact that you’re essentially stealing the content of others, the accompanying lack of authenticity and creativity –especially in job applications and school/university work –and that ChatGPT will lead to increasingly homogenous and standardised content without much variation.

HOW IT WORKS

GPT-3 has been developed to source and process content from across the Internet to produce its own concise version of any topic requested. It utilises NLG (Natural Language Generation) and NLP (Natural Language Processing) to understand, interpret and then produce human-style text, and is used to produce a broad range of written texts, documents, reports, and simulations of live human interaction in the form of chatbots.

Since code is a form of

text, GPT-3 can also produce purpose-specific code in record time and can be used to find errors in existing programming. The machine-learning incorporated in the process implies that this is not a static state, but that the AI involved will continue to develop and expand its knowledge base, thus becoming increasingly sophisticated and capable over time. Given that it is already able to respond to questions and pose its own in response, this is sci-fi stuff indeed.

Dall-E is the image generating version of GPT-3, created by the same company, OpenAI. It has the capacity to recognise and create images, produce memes, comic strips, mix colours and more, and in combination with other applications can produce websites in a question of hours. But there is more, and it’s just the beginning. This technology is already able to write music, jokes, social media posts, quizzes, recipes, reports, legal documents, school exams, and even phishing attacks. ›

WHAT ARE THE WIDER IMPLICATIONS?

GPT-3 was developed by OpenAI with subsequent multi-billion-dollar funding by the likes of Microsoft. Like Facebook et al before it, the roll-out involves drawing in hundreds of millions of users before a revenueearning model kicks in, and the billions invested indicate there are big plans for this technology. However, the very same Elon Musk who originally sat on the board of OpenAI now spends much of his time warning the world against the potential dangers posed by artificial intelligence.

He is not alone; there is a growing movement, interestingly and worryingly enough led by tech specialists themselves, that insists on

greater awareness of the possible negative impact of AI on human life on this planet and demands far more control of the process. For their part, Big Business and most governments and state departments remain conspicuous by their lack of engagement on the subject, generally preferring to focus upon matters that are seemingly of far less consequence.

So, what are the potential dangers? There is the immediate fear of mass job losses as companies from small to multinational corporations lay off ‘costly’ employees and replace them with machines and technologies such as ChatGPTto reduce costs and maximise their profits.

Science fiction writers predicted a Big Brother world dominated by machines back in the 1950s, and now it seems to be coming to fruition. Given the exponential rate of transformation that is being set in motion, we could see the world change more in the next 20 years than it has in over a century.

The destructive technologies and their impact on the economies and social structure of the world have already contributed to an increasing state of instability and polarisation, but it may be the beginning of a process that could easily spin out of control. Already, many lose out economically so that a few can become billionaires, small businesses are being lost as multinationals tighten their grip, and governments are extending their power over citizens. e

Human beings require batteries for a wide array of daily tasks, including powering our cars, cell phones, and smartwatches. Most of these devices rely on lithium-ion batteries, which have come a long way since their development,

but which have quite a few disadvantages. One is their short lifetime. If you’ve had your smartphone for over a year or two, you may have noticed that the battery lasts less and takes more time to charge.

Then there is the issue of overheating. These batteries can catch fire if

there is an anomaly in their constituent elements, which can include flammable gases. A third problem lies in the sourcing of the raw materials needed to breathe life into large lithium batteries (such as those that power EVs). Lithium and cobalt, in particular, are scarce, and their pricing can be volatile.

Finally, battery degradation continues to worry the EV world, since these vehicles can become completely useless if their battery is spent.

A NEW DISCOVERY BRINGS HOPE

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Library are searching for solutions to these issues by trying out new materials in battery manufacture. One of the most promising is sulphur – an extremely abundant, cheap mineral that can store more energy than ion-based batteries.

In a recent study published in the journal Nature Communications, scientist, Byong-June Lee and colleagues created what can only be described as a game changer in the industry: a new interlayer that boosts storage capacity, while almost eradicating a big issue with sulphur batteries that causes erosion. The battery design combines a lithium metal negative electrode (anode) with a sulphur-containing positive electrode (cathode). An electrolyte (or substance that allows ions to move between

two ends of a battery) is placed between the two ends of the battery.

WHAT MAKES THIS BATTERY DIFFERENT?

Lithium-sulphur batteries are not new, but older versions were less efficient because sulphur dissolved into the electrolyte, resulting in corrosion. Previous researchers had attempted to alleviate this problem by placing a protective layer (called a redoxactive interlayer) between the cathode and anode. This interlayer reduces detrimental reactions within the battery and increase its capacity to hold more charge and last for more cycles. The problem with the redox-active interlayer was its heavy weight and density, which reduced the energy storage capacity. Researched solved this conundrum by creating a porous interlayer that contains sulphur. Thus far, tests have shown an initial capacity that is three times greater than lithium-sulphur cells with an interlayer. What’s more, the new interlayer maintains its capacity over 700

charge-discharge cycles, meaning it has the capacity to significantly extend a battery’s life. The scientists concluded that the new interlayer will represent a big development in how the world powers EVs and other devices and equipment. They are currently working on making the interlayer even finer and lighter. The batteries of the future will weigh one-third of the equivalent lithium-ion batteries and last for twice as long. This will be a huge boost for the EV sectors, which will power ahead with lighter, more efficient cars that boast a significantly longer range.

NEW APPLICATIONS

The new interlayer will enable lithium-sulphur batteries to be used in more than just EVs. They will power shorthaul flights, ferries, and cargo vessels, all of which will be able to run fully on electric power. A myriad of sectors will be able to attain their sustainability goals, and many more companies will be able to meet their net-zero targets. Battery prices will also be far more competitive owing to the abundance of sulphur, which is good news for the future of our planet. e

The amount of time you will need to spend on this task depends on your pet’s breed. Dogs with an undercoat – including huskies, Bernese mountain dogs, German shepherds, Yorkshire terriers, and Shih Tzus –often require additional

time, because their undercoat is typically softer and of a different texture. As for cats, most have a fine lower layer of soft hair, with two notable exceptions being the hairless Sphinx and Rex breeds.

The undercoat plays a crucial role in keeping your pets cool in the summer, as it is a natural insulator that regulates their temperature.

» USING THE RIGHT TYPE OF BRUSH

When choosing a brush, make sure to match your choice with your pet’s coat. Let’s start with dogs. Wire brushes work well for most pooches, especially if they have plastic or silicone beads at their tips (since these make brushing more comfortable for your pet). If your pet has a short coat, then a bristle brush is ideal, as it efficiently separates hair follicles, removes dead hair, and boosts circulation. If your dog has long, fluffy fur and/or an undercoat, then a shedding blade is a good choice.

For cats, a bristle brush works well on nearly all coat types. For fur that tends to tangle up, a wire brush will do the trick. A moulting comb, meanwhile, is a must for cats with thick fur and/or an undercoat. Finally,

both dogs and cats may enjoy being petted with a rubber glove brush, which also helps remove excess fur.

» KEEPING PESTS AT BAY

There are a host of products for ticks and fleas, with most owners opting for either an antiparasitic collar or a topical solution. Before making your choice of treatment, ask your vet for advice. Not all products are alike. For instance, Advantix protects your dog against heartworm disease, something which not all medication does. Don’t use the same products for dogs and cats; flea and tick products for dogs can be toxic to cats so you should separate your cat from your dog for 24 hours after the application of one of these treatments. Always go with a product your veterinarian recommends.

» FROTHY AND FRAGRANT

Dogs and cats only needs to be washed every few weeks or once a month, since frequent bathing can strip away essential oils, leading to itchy, dry skin. If they get a little dirty while playing, then remove the dirt with a towel and apply a spray shampoo.

If you are a fragrance lover, know that there are a myriad of delicious smelling colognes, which add a special something to your pet’s bathing experience. Many are organic and contain natural conditioners, to help your pet’s coat shine. Finally, make sure your pets’ paws don’t get burned. Don’t take them for walks or to the beach during peak hours and if you must take them outside when the ground is hot, make sure they are wearing booties. Buy an organic paw balm to keep their paw pads lovely and hydrated throughout the year. e

With over 70% of the properties sold, Vista Lago is a new villa project within Real de La Quinta that has hit the mark with the buying public. What is the secret behind this success story?

The Costa del Sol is a region where property development plays an important role in the local economy. Large numbers of people want to extend their holiday experience and own a second home here, and there is also a growing market among those who wish to relocate and live in this region. Taken together, it makes for a buoyant sector, but even so there is strong competition among developers for land and also buyers – with a lot of work between finding the former and handing over the keys to the latter – so what is it that makes a successful project?

Michael Rodziewicz, founder and CEO of BRIGHT, heads up a highly successful specialist development company that has hit the mark with buyers. In this article we ask him how it has come about and what processes are involved in achieving this level of success.

What was the process that led up to the development of Vista Lago?

It begins with the site. We wanted to create something very special but struggled to find the right location and land until we came across the plot at Real de La Quinta. Actually, we bought three plots to create a 6.5-hectare setting for an

exclusive gated community, and had space for 24 villas but decided upon 18 so that each can enjoy complete privacy and uninterrupted views.

What made the location right?

Different locations suit different projects, but the site at Real de La Quinta perfectly suited our concept because it offers space, privacy, fantastic sea and country views, natural surroundings, easy access to Marbella and the coast, and is within a gated country club with a growing number of first-class leisure and lifestyle amenities. The fact that it is a sustainably developed resort is in line with our own philosophy. ›

How did the concept for the project come about?

The core concept was to create something unique. From there, the plot and setting begin to shape the details. We wanted to create a private villa community, but yes, the final design was the result of a process, and this process includes a very high degree of bespoke detailing as a result of which each home is unique to its owners. Another factor that involves the final realisation of the project is that we’re building to meet the strict technical and environmental requirements of BREEAM certification, since we believe that sustainable development should be the responsibility and goal of all promoters.

How do product development and pricing come together?

Through teamwork. Everyone within the BRIGHT team contributes specific knowhow to the process. It’s a huge team effort involving constant evaluation, improvement, and adapting to clients’ needs. We’ve also been incorporating new technologies during the process in a drive to perfect the final product we deliver to our buyers.

What kind of buyer did you have in mind?

Actually, people like ourselves, who want somewhere special to live. Location, sustainability, quality, style, amenities and attention to detail are all core elements of importance. In fact, I made a list of the things I didn’t like about my existing home and decided to resolve these issues in Vista Lago to create homes truly made for our era and lifestyles. The list included: optimal room size, privacy, heat pumps, solar panels, electric car chargers, reusable clean water, and security.

What are the main distinguishing features of Vista Lago?

To start with, award-winning design – both exterior and interior – privacy, breath-taking views, the lifestyle facilities of Real de La Quinta, and the sustainable living certification of BREEAM. Building for today without endangering tomorrow is central to the BRIGHT ethos.

What was the marketing concept developed to promote Vista Lago?

The marketing for Vista Lago is based loosely around three of the main marketing concepts – The Product Concept that focuses on the appeal of quality and innovation; The Marketing Concept, which communicates the USPs of Vista Lago; and the Social Marketing Concept, which highlights the sustainable and healthy living/wellbeing elements central to the project.

To what would you ascribe the success of the project?

To the passion of the entire team, from architects and designers to marketing and administration. We’re passionate about what we do, and it shows in the process and the final product. Moreover, I believe we’re generous too; we’re not afraid to share ideas and take innovative steps. Without this, we couldn’t create something that is special, different. We built a team with UDesign to realise our clients’ individual dream homes, and that’s a very rewarding process that delves deeper than most developments do.

Will there be more to follow?

Yes, we are planning more projects, but always following the same core principles. For now, however, we remain fully dedicated to Vista Lago and commit our attention to realising beautiful bespoke homes within a

BREEAM certified gated villa community between Marbella and open nature. This remains our primary mission for the immediate future.

Churchill Books Opens in Centro Plaza

Centro Plaza in Nueva Andalucía is now home to a new bookshop opened by 11-year-old entrepreneur, Johanna Jonsson. The soft launch was attended by over 100 people, including Johanna and her friends. While the summer temperatures of the Mediterranean coast are one of the main attractions that have prompted many northern Europeans to relocate to the Costa de Sol, just a small rise in those temperatures not only leaves residents breaking out into a sweat, it also wreaks havoc with our planet.

As temperatures rise so does the frequency of weather-related incidents, such as flooding, droughts, forest fires, rising sea levels and coastal erosion to name just a few.

Climate change is a problem that has been creeping up on us for some time and if we don’t take action now, these incidents will

only become more commonplace and more severe.

The number of solar panel installations along the coast has increased rapidly in the last few years and it is not just the environmental aspect that is prompting homeowners and businesses to go solar.

The recent volatility in the electricity market, sparked by a number of factors including Russia’s

invasion of Ukraine, led to a steep rise in electricity bills and that in turn has prompted more and more consumers to take electricity generation into their own hands.

Financially, solar panels make for a great investment. While there is the initial outlay for the installation, the savings that are made on the cost of electricity mean that the pay back on the investment is literally just a few years. ›

Also, participation in enterprises that have an actual, real economic activity are excluded, when this source provides for at least 50% of the taxpayer’s personal income.

Any person appearing as an owner in a public registry – also a fiscal one – may be taken for such. Ownership may be attributed too by the Tax Office, on the basis of their own findings.

The law looks at a general €700.000 tax exempt wealth, with an additional €300.000 allowance for your main dwelling, hence for most payers, wealth tax starts at €1.000.000. However, Cataluña reduced the general tax-exempt amount to €500.000 and Extremadura, Aragón and Valencia to €400.000. Navarra and the Basque Country, as always, have their own advantageous

arrangements. The tax rate starts at 0.2%, with the top tier set at €10.695.996,06 and taxed at 3.5% of the resulting tax base. Residents in Ceuta and Melilla may apply a 75% rebate on tax payable for assets located in those enclaves.

Law 3/2009 gave the regions (autonomous communities) the option to manage wealth tax (among other taxes, such as inheritance and, in part, personal income tax). As a result, Madrid and in 2022, Andalucía, introduced a most welcome 100% rebate on wealth tax payable. In Galicia the rebate is 25%.

The joy did not last long, though.

In order to reduce the disparities between the regions yet respecting Law 3/2009, the pompously called Tax on Great Fortunes (TGF), was created by article 3 of Law 38/2022.

The TGF is a blanket wealth tax payable by anyone with net assets of €3.000.000 and above, with the same general €700.000 tax exempt initial wealth, and the additional €300.000 for one’s main dwelling. Net wealth is calculated in the same manner as for wealth tax, with the same list of excluded assets, calculation of debts and charges, and attribution of ownership.

The TGF may not be modified by the regions. TGF is collected and managed by the national Tax Office (Agencia Estatal de la Administración Tributaria, AEAT). Rates, thresholds and allowances may be changed by the Budget.

Tax rates range from 1.7%

to 3.5% for the same top tier as wealth tax. It must be declared and in principle paid before the 31st December of the following year. Residents in regions currently not managing their own wealth tax are exempted from declaring the TGF.

The tax applies as of 2022, and in principle for two years. However, considering why it was introduced, it seems unlikely it will be supressed for as long as wealth tax exists.

As a result, Spain has two overlapping taxes as they apply to the same payers and concept, a situation solved by allowing payments for regular wealth tax or foreign taxes paid for the same wealth, to be deducted from amounts due for TGF.

Tax paid for personal income and both wealth taxes may not exceed 60% of annual income for residents. In order to make this limit effective, payable TGF may be reduced by up to 80%.

Non-residents from

countries outside the European Union, the European Economic Area, or without agreements to exchange information and collect taxes, must appoint a resident representative. This may be a natural or a legal person, and they must accept expressly, as they are directly and severally responsible for paying the TGF (as well as wealth tax).

Like with regular wealth tax, married couples’ common property is directly subject to payment of the TGF.

As a result, those benefitting from the rebates implemented by Madrid, Andalucía and to a lesser extent, Galicia, will only be those taxpayers with a net wealth over €700.000 (or €1.000.000 if they own a main residence), and below €3.000.000, a small window which significantly reduces the scope and good intentions of Law 3/2009. e

Dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant, particularly one which has held its star since 2005, may be thought of as a serious concern where you have to be on your best behaviour. At El Lago, however, it is a joyous affair, with a staff who greet you with a warm welcome and make you feel completely at ease throughout the experience. Headed up by restaurant Manager, Antonio Jiménez, accompanied by the Maître, Hassan Hatouchi, Head Waiter, Andrés Furlan, and José Antonio Gómez, Sommelier, they are friendly, professional, enthusiastic and endearing, and very eloquent about the creative dishes and matching wines being served.

The Head Chef, Fernando Villasclara, who hails from

Nerja, completed his training at the prestigious Escuela de Hostelería de Benahavís before honing his skills in top establishments Mugaritz, La Bulla Gastrobar, and Hotel Puente Romano. He is an amiable young man who is passionate about his craft, often stepping into the restaurant to explain a dish to diners and to answer their questions.

We arrived on a balmy evening and took stock of our surroundings as we sipped on a welcome glass of Pommery Champagne. The décor is a mix of contemporary and traditional, with full length windows overlooking the lake and centrepiece fountain, solid linen-clad tables, chairs with leather seating, rustic tiled flooring, and paintings depicting culinary ingredients,

all set off by ceiling spots. The exterior terrace is spacious, with modern furniture and glass railing surrounds affording full appreciation of the enchanting view. Soothing piano music creates a serene and caressing ambience.

ENTHRALLING EXPERIENCE

We could have selected from the à la Carte menu where, as you would expect from a gourmet venue of this calibre, an enticing range of starters, fish and meat dishes, including grilled cuts, beckoned. On this occasion however, we elected to try Fernando’s Tasting Menu. Comprising a mix of Seasonal Snacks, followed by eight distinct dishes and dessert, we settled in for an exciting encounter. ›

The snack mix really brought our palates to life, with Kuzu meringue, lactic cheese from Coín and pisto, half a tangerine filled with a creamy mix of pickled fennel and carrot, small tuna from Estepona in a sustainable vegetable consommé with smoked tuna and raisins, which was prepared by Fernando at our table. Beet and strawberry ‘porra’ with its tartar and green mustard, red prawns with garlic and caviar from Riofrío, and a sushi-like mini aubergine with pine nut baba ganoush and sherry, followed. These elaborate delicacies displayed an exquisite artistry and complied with the restaurants commitment to serve sustainable zerokilometre cuisine, in this case taken to imply all sourcing of ingredients within a 100km radius.

The rustic breads we were offered as accompaniments are from Málaga’s oldest bakery, Ilustre, including an aromatic Moroccan-style preparation, were dipped into La Oliva Roja Hojiblanca from the Serrania de Ronda, and contrasting Castillo de Canena Pictual from Jaen, both Virgen Extra Olive Oils bearing personalised labels for the restaurant. ›

Suitably primed, our gastronomic adventure continued with a sequence of plates featuring locallysourced ingredients, in order: seasonal vegetable gargouillou with chopped Málaga lettuce, leeks from Guadalhorce in pepitoria and smoked romesco sauce, beurre blanc of chard with white ‘quisquilla shrimps’, and red mullet from Marbella with a hollandaise of its livers with mango. Grilled veal sweetbreads in bigarade sauce with green beans and harissa, suckling goat from Málaga with mustard, capers and endives, and from La Axarquía, sweet potatoes with cane honey and muscatel grape granita. The different dishes composing the

Menu Sazón are a visual extravaganza of colours and textures, delivering an array of exploding flavours in the mouth.

We savoured a variety of white and red wines with these delicacies, although these are optional, which proved to be phenomenal pairings, all the more so given their proximate origins of Jerez, Ronda, Málaga and La Axarquía. There is also a selection of international or very special pairings available for wine aficionados.

Our Michelin-medley came to a close with strawberries with pepper, green asparagus flan, and petits-fours, all of us in full agreement that a visit to El Lago is a must for anyone who appreciates fine gastronomy. e

RONDA’S NO-NONSENSE MICHELIN-CHEF

This year, 289 Spanish restaurants received Michelin Stars. 23 are in Andalucía and eight are in Málaga. But of the thousands of restaurants in the province, only two have two Michelin starsSkina in Marbella and Bardal in Ronda. We met chef Benito Gómez in his restaurant

Bardal to talk about food, Michelin stars, and what makes this cook work 18 hours a day.

THE BOY IN THE KITCHEN

In the 1960s, Benito’s parents moved from Andalucía to Barcelona to run a restaurant. “All the cooking I have ever seen has been in restaurant kitchens. I grew up with Catalan and Andalusian cooking, so Bardal is inspired by both,” explains the chef.

Benito studied Culinary Arts at Sant Pol de Mar, but his turning point was the cookbook El Bulli – El Sabor del Mediterráneo (El Bulli, the taste of the Mediterranean) by the famous Catalan chef Ferran Adrià. “That book became the foundation of modern Spanish gastronomy where Adrià broke with the establishment and showed the way for a whole new generation of cooks. To be honest, it marked my path both as a cook and a person.”

His first paying job was in Jean Luc Figueras’ Michelin restaurant. Benito is still inspired by his Catalan role models, “though I look up to anyone who has the stamina to work in a kitchen 15 hours a day while putting all their love into preparing food.”

In 2014, Benito came to work as a chef for the restaurant Tragabuches in Ronda. “There are few places in the world that are as spectacular. I fell completely in love with the town.” He took over the ownership of Tragabuches in 2016. Tragatá, as he renamed it, received a Michelin recommendation in 2017 and is still open. In 2018 he opened Bardal, and the restaurant has had two Michelin Stars since 2019.

Benito praises Andalucía’s gastronomical potential. “Never has Andalucía’s kitchen been seen as how we look at it today. This was Spain’s poorest region with food based on what was available. But the great thing now is that you have an extensive kitchen with rich taste nuances based on very humble ingredients. At the same time, Andalucía has some of the best produce in the world.” ›

The price to enjoy a dinner at Bardal is steep, but worth the cost and the trip. “Just like football fans will spend 150 euros on a match, those who appreciate special dining experiences will come here. The guests spend on average 230 euros per person, but a restaurant like this is an experience of a lifetime.”

LIFE OF A MASTER CHEF

Like his ancestors, Benito is an unstoppable workhorse. “Just a few years ago, restaurant employees didn’t have a single day off, but we still work weekends, bank holidays and vacations.”

Bardal operates like a finely tuned machine and tardy guests are the only thing that causes problems. Since the diners spend up to four hours at the table, there is no margin for delays. “Our lunch reservations are between 13:30 and 13:45, and dinner reservations are between 20:00 and 20:45. The guests cannot come any later, but Spaniards have a lot to learn about punctuality. When you go to a theatre performance, they won't start again if

you arrive late. Why can’t restaurants be like that? It isn't a problem at Tragatá where you can eat in 30 minutes or three hours and order one or ten dishes. But at Bardal we serve 18 or 21 dishes depending on which

menu you choose.”

Benito gives everything to offer his guests the very best. Bardal is his work, his hobby, and his passion. “I am lucky in that I love what I do. If I was born again, I’d do the same thing!” ›

A LA MESA

In Bardal’s kitchen eight professional cooks work in an incredible 20m2 area. They are overseen by Benito, who ensures that tastes, scents, and presentations are nothing but perfect. The ingredients reflect the region with respect, essence, and authenticity and their Menú Degustación includes mushroom and pine nut infusion, sea urchin and caviar, sheep milk labneh, wild seabass, and baby goat with seaweed. “In the five years we have been here, we have established our own style, but every year the style gets more refined in how we combine our ingredients.”

Bardal works with over 120 speciality suppliers, as a single dish can have ingredients from a handful of places. “Everybody talks

about the zero kilometer kitchen. Obviously, we also wish to use local ingredients and pollute less, but cooks are not the ones who will ruin the planet. We use local produce, when possible, but not everything local is good, and we need the best. By importing better ingredients to Ronda, we also improve local knowledge and production.”

Once again, Bardal received two stars in the 2023 Michelin Guide, ensuring its position among the gastro-elite. But the chef is quick to point out that these are prizes and nothing more. “Of course, we are ecstatic to be in the Michelin Guide. It has given us international attention, but whether you have stars or not, you still have to continue to do everything to the best of your

abilities, be honest and work hard.”

Benito’s long-time dream has been a bigger kitchen. As soon as they get the last building permits (hopefully later this year), the restaurant will eventually move to a spectacular new location 15 minutes outside of Ronda, where the team will have the space to cook to their hearts’ content. In the meanwhile, one can enjoy Benito’s cuisine right in the heart of Ronda.

For all his stars, the chef is truly down-to-earth. “I do not believe in gourmet food. Food is good or bad; the only difference is that good food is made with love. In the end, it is about the essence and quality of the products and the care one takes in preparing the food. It is no greater secret than that.” e

To become familiar with any subject, the best way is to choose a related speciality and then expand on it. Since wine is a vast topic, interesting areas might be, for example, Tokay, Viennese wines, or the orange wines of Armenia and Georgia. And, instead of following the money, many commentators will maintain that every wine growing area in the world has a relationship with some individual or group of individuals who have been their distinguishing champions. But who are these personalities?

On consideration, we can take

VICTORIA ORDOÑEZ RECOVERING THE TRADITION OF VITICULTURE IN MÁLAGA

Luis Pérez as a living example for the sherry triangle. In La Rioja, Jorge and Isaac Muga would qualify, and we can extend these criteria through practically every other Spanish wine region. Nearer home, we can be immensely proud to nominate Victoria Ordoñez, a Malagueña whose initial ambition was to become a doctor, for which she qualified, even though wine was in her genes. Brother Jorge pioneered the introduction of Spanish wines to the USA, and while Victoria was originally involved in the enterprise, she realised that the purely commercial side was not going to be fulfilling.

What she enjoyed most was making wine. Fortunately, Jorge had worked with the eminent Austrian specialist, Alois Kracher, who in turn conveyed to Victoria ideas regarding aspects of winemaking that were unusually advanced for the region. Victoria credits him with teaching her everything she knows.

Subsequently, in 2015, Victoria decided it was time to start her own unique project to recuperate the most symbolic indigenous grape variety in the history of Málaga: the Pedro Ximénez. This was the source of a white wine that had been regularly sold at auction at

Christie’s in London since 1769, known as ‘Mountain Wine’, also as ‘Vino Malagueño’.

The phylloxera plague of the late 19th century denuded the Spanish peninsula of all its vines. Even when disease-resistant American vines were eventually introduced, the grafting process required did not work in Málaga. The only route to salvation was to locate the old phylloxeraresistant vines. These were, and indeed still are, found at higher altitudes, where mules replace machines. Mountain wines, since time immemorial, can be defined as artisan, terroiringrained, and unassisted by any form of irrigation.

Victoria wanted to recover these old vines and to simultaneously honour, in her words, the debased Pedro Ximénez grape variety. She has succeeded with honours, and

the excellent wines she makes in small quantities are proof of her achievement.

La Ola del Melillero is a white dry Pedro Ximénez made from vines at least 80 years old, and priced at €13,40. Delightful and great value. For the more serious stuff, there are significant bottles, burgundy style, and very heavy, with scrupulously crafted labels, in some cases reproducing old engravings. In one of these, the familiar landscape of the Zafarraya mountain pass that links Málaga and Granada provinces, shows two walkers in 19th century attire, one dressed in Málaga style and the other in English style.

Monticara is a beautiful dry low pH white made with the normally sweet Moscatel de Málaga grapes grown at the highest altitude of any

vines in the province (€29). Voladeros, delicate and elegant, is Monticara‘s natural partner, similarly priced and made with Pedro Ximénez, uniquely fermented and matured in oak. Incidentally, Victoria’s bodega is the only one still existing within the Málaga city limits.

Victoria’s touch of genius extends to red wines, and fortuitously intercedes with her Camarolos (€21,50) a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Tempranillo. The more expensive Marti Aguilar comprises Petit Verdot, Syrah and Tempranillo (€65). The winery has ECOCERT organic and vegan agriculture certification.
