ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES
22 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM » SPOTLIGHT | TRAVEL « BACK TO CONTENTS
Boats s way in the breeze and semisculpted weathered wood juts out from virgin sand as do rocks from turquoise water. The rainbow’s full spectrum of colours is reflected in the green vegetation, the reds, yellows , and oranges
of flowers, the hu es of tropical fruit, the black of volcanic beaches, the pink of coral and Madagascar periwinkles, and the many jolly primary-coloured houses.
St. Vincent and The Grenadines (‘SVG’) is an archipelago of 32 islands. 9 are inhabited of which some are private. They stretch some 44 miles
like beads in a rosary, or a chain of divine jewels, and are perfectly spaced, with idyllic beaches, safe harbours, and enticing restaurants and bars.
The islands were settled mainly by Scottish families, mariners and shipwrights with names like Macintosh, Stewart, Mitchell, McQuilkin, and McLaurence. ›
There’s something so wonderfully invigorating about the Tropics. It’s where my senses are awakened. Each natural phenomenon is the more extreme and dramatic. The downpours of rain are sudden and torrential to which the lush vegetation responds avidly in its fight for light and growth. The stars are stark, the sunsets stun, and the water catches the eye as it glints and glistens.
WORDS ADAM JACOT DE BOINOD
Stunning St Vincent 23 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
SVG is on its own crest of a wave with new flights and hotels. A Sandals resort has just opened in St Vincent, Mandarin Oriental and a Soho House are in Canouan and, of course, there’s the mystique of Mustique. High season is from November to April. My favourite guidebooks on the archipelago are a handbook by Chris Doyle and one by Lesley Sutty.
The island of St Vincent has its own dense rainforest, its own Sunset Rum and Hairoun beer, and no traffic lights. Dogs enjoy the heated tarmac, chickens literally cross the road, and goats nibble on the playing fields. There are banana plantations, coconut groves, and
a bamboo forest.
Gingerbread houses stand on stilts and customarily get repainted at Christmas.
Up in the north, where the Caribs still live, there are mountain trails, waterfalls, and wildlife along with heliconias, giant ferns, palms, and blue mahoes. I loved the bustle of
Kingstown’s fruit market and the heritage of the Botanical Gardens. At the Wallilabou Heritage Park all is vibrant and brimming with abundance. Tarzanswinging ropes make way here for the film set of Pirates of the Caribbean with a museum containing its props and backdrops. ›

For the perfect place to adjust from a flight to a very different climate, and only 20 minutes-drive from the airport and 10 minutes from the capital, I loved Beachcombers Hotel (www.beachcombershotel. com). “Fish of the day: Barracuda” said the waitress and I knew I had truly arrived! 10 of its delightful cosy cottagey 57 rooms (with prices from $120 in low season) have ocean views. Down past the gardeners I went in their Hawaiian shirts, through lush tropical gardens enlivened by birds, lizards,
and bees and besprinkled with frangipani, hibiscus, and bougainvillea. I reached Ada restaurant where there’s broad decking below the high white rafters of this vast ambient open space yards from the shore. It has Anatolian fused Mediterranean flavours combining Caribbean ingredients. Indeed, the wonderfully contemporary menu is sourced from the local volcanic soil.
Directly opposite, I took a short boat ride across to Young Island (www.youngisland.com). Up from the whitest of
sands, among a lush tropical garden and beneath the seven-tiered ‘vetiver’ thatched huts reminiscent of the South Pacific was the garden gazebo restaurant. Here, with my fruit punch and hibiscus flower, I watched kids swimming safely in the shallow turquoise water. Just behind lies the miniature island of Fort Duvernette, where I climbed up its 255-step zenith to survey snorkellers from transparent kayaks exploring the gorgeous water before I took the ferry to Bequia.

WHAT DIVINE INSPIRATION DREAMT UP THE ISLAND OF BEQUIA?
Pronounced ‘Bekwey’ and meaning ‘island of the clouds’ in ancient Arawak, it’s a sevenmile expanse which developed less from sugar as from sea-island cotton and indigo, from boat building (especially schooners), whaling, and merchant seamen. Nowadays 70% of the economy comes from tourists the more adventurous of whom get off their sun-loungers in the constantly warm temperature and are blessed with fantastic conditions for sailing and wonderful snorkelling, kayaking, and hiking. There are no private beaches, and the 5,000 residents best traverse the hills in four-wheel-drives and are refreshingly respectful of their island’s beauty.
So up I got from my supine position and halfway along the Belmont Walkway reached Dive Bequia (www.divebequia.com).
I went on one of their twicedaily 90-minute snorkelling and SCUBA trips out in their boat to Rocky Bay and Devil’s Table. Here, among drifts and fringing reefs, was marine life as diverse and exotic-sounding as trumpet fish, sergeantmajor, and puffer fish. The view back at the harbour exhibited the bright coloured houses sprinkled up the hillsides.
Of the many secluded spots, the Windward side has the ferocity of the Atlantic Ocean potion to contrast with the leeward calm of the bays. Industry Bay and Hope Bay are
particularly special. As I hiked the northern section, my guide sardonically quipped, “Stick to the path for, if a coconut falls on you, you won’t remember the island!”
Right in the heart of the island’s action is Bequia Plantation Hotel (www. bequiaplantationhotel.com).
Dating from the 1950s and on the site of the island’s first hotel, the central building has broad verandas decked with old mahogany tables, rattan sofas, and plantation chairs. A traditional, cultured feel for the discerning guest. ›
The Bright Coloured Houses at Bequia
27 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
Beachcombers Hotel
It’s set back from a lovely stretch of beach and water with gorgeous grounds containing mango, guava, and breadfruit trees, and the spongiest of grass. The tranquil, duck-egg blue gingerbread-style square cottages are beautifully spaced. Their exteriors have pretty fretwork. In their fresh, airy interiors blueand-white contemporary décor mirrors the central plantation house. From it I loved my daylight trail around the headland to Princess Margaret Beach, and my evening wander along the well-lit Belmont Walkway, past restaurants to the stalls and the harbour in Admiralty Bay.
At ‘d Harbour’ (the locals’ name for Port Elizabeth) there’s all the exuberance of locals with heads balancing fruit walking past street vendors and blaring reggae. Wooden houses climb up steep hillsides, in shades of blue, orange, and lime, with picket-fence porches and frangipani reached by paths lined with tamarind and croton plants. ›

The Dreamy Façade of The Liming
29 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
Liming at The Liming
Even on a small island it’s worth going the extra mile. Discretely tucked away on the island’s edge and truly sublime is The Liming (www. thelimingbequia.com). With the word being local lingo for ‘hanging around, usually in a public place with friends, enjoying the scene’, the hotel certainly encourages its own motto of ‘the art of doing nothing’. It’s a boutique hotel and a perfect treat for honeymooners. Creams and whites blend with treetrunk tables, wicker mats, and vast rustic gourds. It’s so nourishing as all is in harmony with nature. Spread across well-kept gardens that include silver Bismarck Palms are the nine soft yellow villas (to become 23 by September). Their solid square interiors reminded me of David Hockney’s with his white furnishings, still ferns, open white
shutters, and plunge pools. The incredibly spacious restaurant, under its vast dodecahedral roof is the ultimate indoor-outdoor pavilion and has views of the surrounding islands. The cuisine is fresh and delicious, and the rum punches are quite a knock-out! It all conjured up James Bond and Ursula Andress as the odd twin otter descends low over the pavilion roof to the airstrip beyond allowing celebrities to land for lunch as do passing yachts that moor on the jetty. It never felt crowded, and I even had
the beach to myself as I came back with a day-pass that gave me lunch and use of the beach.
The sea around Bequia is a paradise for yachting. No island is over three hours away and ever-present easterly trade winds blow at a steady 15 knots. Boats have always been central to the island’s prosperity. There seemed more moored in the bays than houses on the hillsides. Indeed, the Friendship Rose, a local tour boat, was so admired by Bob Dylan that he had his own ‘Water Pearl’ boat built here. ›

Princess Margaret Beach in Bequia
As the islands get smaller so their charm intensifies. I arrived at night via the Jaden Express ferry. I changed at Union Island from whose jagged peaks, as I neared, I couldn’t take my eyes. They forever changed shape just like the dramatic approach to Mo‘orea in the South Pacific. I reached the spectacular Petit St Vincent (www. petitstvincent.com), and as I stepped onto the resort’s powerful speedboat, I knew instantly that I was in the lap of luxury. With all the stars shining bright there was all the joyful expectation of the morning’s discoveries to come as dawn unwrapped the island like a glorious present.
The resort has as its mantra ‘relaxed Caribbean charm
with a touch of elegance’. For its utter seclusion… total privacy… a chance to completely unwind. All the elements were combined: rock and wood, Atlantic air, seawater and rain, and fiery heat from the sun.
Each of the 22 stone beach cottages look out to an island. They blend with nature with their neutral earthy tones, their vaulted ceilings, their teak furnishings, and sliding doors. The daytime Beach restaurant menu is effortlessly enticing from chunky organic-shaped wooden tables under swaying palms and almond trees.
The Main Pavilion restaurant, perched up high, offers a different menu every night using organic produce from its extensive garden.
Courtesy of the resort, I spent the day out sailing in a boat called Beauty. Past Mopion, the famous sandbank used for the rum advert, I reached Tobago Cays Marine Park to swim with turtles and snorkel for bright pretty fish. ‘We returned to PSV (as they abbreviate the resort island). Back to the hammocks and swings. No TV sets. Instead, birdsong and croaking frogs with the clearest crystalline seawater, white powdered sands, and tropical woodlands. PSV really is enchanting and magical. It truly is a treasure island. I must go back to SVG not to mention PSV whenever but soon! e

EXPLORA JOURNEYS
EMBRACE THE OCEAN STATE OF MIND
SPOTLIGHT | CRUISES « BACK TO CONTENTS ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM » 36 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF EXPLORA JOURNEYS
Picture the perfect ocean voyage… one that combines luxury, adventure, nature, beauty and wellness… one that is perfectly curated to your needs, whether you are travelling solo, or with friends or family… a journey that expands your mind as you cross the world’s oceans and visit off-the-beaten-track destinations. This dream is the reality enjoyed by clients of Explora Journeys – the new lifestyle travel brand launched by the MSC Group. It aims to redefine the luxury cruise category through vibrant, cosmopolitan, relaxed experiences that allow you to focus on what really matters –your health and wellness and creating meaningful memories alongside the people you love.
It is no wonder that Explora Journeys brand chose the mandala as its logo. Designed by Alexa Aponte-Vago, CFO of the MSC Group, this symbol is deeply grounded in spirituality. Its patterns represent a journey of personal discovery and fulfilment – and the kind of awakening that travel guarantees. The oceans and their influence sit at the heart of the Explora Journeys brand, as they are a symbol of connection with ourselves, others, and the places that surround us. The brand has tapped into this emotional bond and its activities are centred on instilling the ‘Ocean State of Mind’ in travellers. Effortless luxury is married to a myriad of opportunities for exploration, transformation, and physical, intellectual, and spiritual renewal. Explora Journeys has crafted unique terminology to describe this state of being. They speak of journeys rather than cruises, travel advisors rather than travel agents, and suites, penthouses, residences, and homes at sea instead of cabins, staterooms or rooms. Guests can look forward to immersing themselves in destination experiences instead of tours or shore excursions. It’s all about enjoying quality time and enrapturing oneself in the beauty of the world, without rushing and without having to dance to anyone else’s drum. ›

On May 10, 1824, London’s National Gallery opened its doors ‘without fee or reward, to every decently dressed person and all ranks and degrees of men’. Famous artworks no one but the rich and entitled had ever seen could now be appreciated by labourers as well as lords in the same public space (provided they wore collars and ties).
From 38 artworks bought by the government for £57,000, the collection has multiplied to an encyclopaedic 2,600 masterpieces worth millions covering European art from 1300 to 1900. And it still doesn’t cost a penny to see them! Over
three million visitors climbed the Trafalgar Square museum’s sweeping steps last year to encounter Leonardo da Vinci’s The Virgin of the Rocks and Botticelli’s Venus and Mars ‘in the flesh’ so to speak. The crowds also make a beeline for Monet’s The Water-Lily Pond, Constable’s The Hay Wain, Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire, Renoir’s The Umbrellas and everything by Van Gogh. The floorboards below Sunflowers in Room 43 are the most scuffed in the building!
Today the world’s 10th most popular art museum is synonymous with its regal neoclassical home overlooking Nelson’s Column, four stone lions and hundreds of feral pigeons. But that’s not where the story began ›

200 YEARS IN PICTURES
If “museums are wormholes to other worlds,” to quote Pulitzer Prizewinning art critic Jerry Saltz, the National Gallery is the extraterrestrial trip of a lifetime: a journey through seven centuries into the alternative universes of Europe’s greatest painters. With a Bicentenary and a radical rehang of the collection to celebrate in 2024, it could be a hanging offence not to see it this year!
57 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
BOTCHED BEGINNINGS
Until the Trafalgar Square museum opened in 1838, the collection was crammed into its original owner’s subsiding London townhouse. The Louvre –housed in the sumptuous royal palace of the French kings since 1793 – it was not! Raphael and Rubens who headlined the founding collection would have turned in their tombs to read novelist Anthony Trollope’s report of the ‘dingy, dull,
narrow house, ill-adapted for the exhibition of the treasures it held’.
Next to Russia’s State Hermitage Museum (opened in 1764) and The Prado in Spain (1816), both showcasing nationalised royal collections in fabulous buildings, London’s makedo museum was a national embarrassment that took 14 years to live down. (Britain’s Royal Collection remains the property of the Sovereign and is the largest private art
collection in the world.)
Trailing behind Europe in the national museum stakes also resulted in missed opportunities. Losing out to Catherine the Great was one of them. When former British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole’s collection of Renaissance treasures came up for sale in 1779, the Russian Empress (who owned to being “gluttonous for fine art”) snapped them up for The Hermitage for £40,550. ›

Managed by Trustees whose conservative tastes didn’t stray beyond Old Masters, the collection became more comprehensive under the museum’s first Director, Sir Charles Eastlake, who travelled Europe in the 1850s on a buying spree of some 200 works. And its kudos rose significantly that same decade when English artist William Turner bequeathed his work to the nation. But it was a while before the Impressionists gained acceptance among the ‘old school’ Trustees.
In 1906, when Irish art collector Sir Hugh Lane offered 39 paintings including Renoir’s Umbrellas to the nation, Lord Redesdale scoffed: "I would as soon expect to hear of a Mormon service being conducted in St. Paul's Cathedral as to see the exhibition of the works of the modern French Art-rebels in the sacred precincts of Trafalgar Square."
Other benefactors have included Prince Albert, who willed his collection of German and Italian ‘primitives’; textile manufacturer Samuel Courtauld who left a fund for the purchase of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art only; Sir Paul Getty whose endowment fund is ongoing; and the Sainsbury Brothers of supermarket fame who christened a new wing. Today the museum relies heavily on public appeals for major acquisitions, such as the pair of Titians bought in tandem with the National Gallery of Scotland in 2012 for a cool £95 million!

TREASURES ON TOUR
More than half the UK population will be within an hour’s drive of a National Gallery masterpiece via 12 nationwide exhibitions opening simultaneously on Bicentennial Day, May 10. Canaletto’s The Stonemason’s Yard headlines in Aberystwyth, Caravaggio’s The Supper at Emmaus in Belfast and Botticelli’s Venus and Mars in Cambridge – the first time this Italian Renaissance treasure has left the National Gallery since it was acquired in 1874.
The year-long NG200 Festival of Art will also cut the red ribbon on a ‘dramatic redisplay’ of the entire collection. Instead of being purely chronological as until now, works from different periods will be paired in thematic displays to provoke ‘new artistic conversations’.
If you can’t get to London this year, the online collection is also getting a Bicentenary update with a new large-scale digital gallery experience that’s almost as good as being there.

A MONSTROUS CARBUNCLE
King Charles cemented his princely fame as a scathing critic of modernist architecture with this famous phrase 40 years ago this month. His attack was directed against the National Gallery’s plans to add a modern tower to its Victorian façade. Charles likened it to “ a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a muchloved and elegant friend.” The tower didn’t get built. ›

SUNFLOWERS CELEBRATION
It’s 100 years since the National Gallery acquired its version of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers for the princely sum of £1,304. Today you can add at least three more noughts to the value of its biggest crowd puller.
Van Gogh painted this joyful series to decorate The Yellow House in Provençe where he had hopes of setting up an artists’ colony with Gaugin. “I’m painting with the gusto of a Marseilles eating bouillabaisse,” he wrote joyfully to his artist friend, having completed four Sunflowers versions in a week. It was a poignantly brief period of pure happiness for the manic depressive Dutch artist who shot himself two years later, aged 37, leaving the world over 2,000 artworks. In his lifetime, he only sold one.
This autumn, Sunflowers will be reunited with other work from Van Gogh’s optimistic Provençe period never seen in public before. Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers runs from September 14-January 19, 2025.

THE ULTIMATE ART HEIST
The only successful robbery at the National Gallery – the theft of a Goya by a pensioner – was so improbable it was made into a film. The Duke (2020) starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren, is a must-see!
The daring snatch of Portrait of the Duke of Wellington in 1961 was effected via the gents’ toilet window while the security system was down. Despite efforts by Interpol, it remained an unsolved crime until one day in 1965, retired London bus driver Kempton
Bunton walked into a London police station and confessed, having first returned the painting (minus its frame) in a left luggage locker. He told police he’d taken the picture as ransom to fund free TV licences for pensioners. “ The act is an attempt to pick the pockets of those who love art more than charity”, he explained.
During the landmark Old Bailey trial, his QC successfully claimed that Bunton never wanted to keep the painting, which meant he could not be convicted of stealing it. He served three months in prison for theft of the frame. ›

ONLINE STAR
The most viewed painting in the National Gallery’s online collection isn’t the first you’d think of. But the enigmatic Arnolfini Portrait (1434) by Jan Van Eyck provokes discussion. Was it painted as a legal document witnessing a marriage, as some art historians suggest; was Mrs Arnolfini pregnant or were bustle fronts the fashion; what is the significance of the oranges and the other people in the mirror? Clearly this couple had enough money to commission a portrait by the great Van Eyck, ensuring their immortality. Shame no one is totally sure who they were!
STROKE OF GENIUS
Among Britain’s many reasons to thank Sir Winston Churchill is for refusing to send the National Gallery’s treasures to Canada
for safekeeping during The Blitz. “ Bury them in caves or in cellars, but not a picture shall leave these islands”, the PM commanded.
Stashed with much trepidation in a Welsh slate quarry for the
duration of the war, the collection emerged surprisingly unscathed. It confirmed the importance of storing paintings at a constant temperature, leading to the first air-conditioned gallery in 1949. ›

ART ATTACKS
The National Gallery has been a target for vandalism since suffragette days with activists resorting to knives, guns and even soup to make their point.
In 1914, suffragette Mary Richards buried a meat cleaver into The Rokeby Venus by Velázquez to protest the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst. “I have tried to destroy the picture of the most beautiful woman in mythological history as a protest against the Government for destroying the most beautiful character in
modern history,” she said.
In 1987 shotgun-toting Robert Cambridge fired a volley into da Vinci’s Leonardo Cartoon at point blank range to demonstrate his ‘disgust with political, social and economic conditions in Britain’. He was committed to an asylum. Latterly, Just Stop Oil activists have been busy, hurling tomato soup at Van Gogh’s Sunflowers in 2022 and attacking The Rokeby Venus with hammers last November. Neither painting was permanently damaged. ›

WHO PAINTED THE RUBENS?
Could the National Gallery have an imposter in its collection?
Art historians have long expressed doubts over the authenticity of the 17th century ‘Rubens’, Samson and Delilah which went missing for nearly 300 years, resurfacing in the 1920s. Now new analysis using Artificial Intelligence has confirmed a 91 per cent chance of it not being by the Flemish artist but just a very good copy. When the museum bought it in 1980 for £2.5 million (£13.5 million today) it was the third highest price ever paid for a painting.

Marbella shot from above back in 1999
Perhaps the first thing to say about Marbella in 1999 was that this was the era of the (in) famous mayor Jesús Gil y Gil. The erstwhile property developer turned politician who was also a notoriously polemic President, of Atletico Madrid was Marmite
to Spanish society – either loved or hated, and more or less in equal measure. Gil now receives pretty much universal official condemnation, but he remains popular among many of Marbella’s residents, who regard him as the saviour of the town.

The once glamorous resort town had become rundown, poorly managed by a socialist town hall that seemed out of sync with a place like this. Litter, drug dealers, and prostitutes gave the streets an unkempt and even threatening feel, which made Marbella increasingly unappealing to the wealthy residents, tourists, and investors that had always driven growth and prosperity in the town. Gil promised a turnaround, and he delivered. By the end of the decade he had reorganised the town, cleaned it up in just
about every sense, from infrastructural projects and tidy streets and parks to the disappearance of dealers and hookers from the public eye. Gil’s newly recruited police force simply picked them up and dumped them over the municipal borders with the warning not to return. Gradually, the town regained its mojo, its allure, and by 1999 there was a definite feeling of resurgence in Marbella.
A TOWN ON THE UP
Affluent tourists had found their way back to these
shores, and they liked it so much that many came back looking for holiday homes to buy, starting a property boom that would only come to an end when the global debt/ financial crisis hit in 2008. The fallout from years of urban planning infringements would follow, but today we can look back at the legacy of a period that produced some of the finest moments in Marbella and left us with the Paseo Marítimo, the promenade with the Dali statues, and the luxurious marble-clad apartments on the west side of town. ›

In 1999, we were looking forward to the coming millennium, worried that the millennium bug might cause disruption to digital systems the world over (it didn’t), trying not to listen to doomsday prophets predicting the end of the world, and partying ‘like it’s 1999’.
One of the best parties of the year, without a doubt, was the launch event of essential Marbella, held at the old Bora Bora beach club. Over 600 people attended, and it became a night to remember – a celebration of mythical proportions exactly 25 years ago!
May 2024 marks the spot where essential Magazine recognises a tremendous achievement – 25 years in business. For a quarter of a century now the magazine has been an integral part of the Marbella community, the chronicle of its evolving society, and the magazine has evolved with it. Back then we lived in the transition between an analogue and digital world, listened to Cher and Blondie revivals, marvelled at a new sensation called Britney Spears and girls swooned over Backstreet Boys and Rickie Martín. They were mostly happy times, and by today’s standards relatively carefree, though time can play tricks on the memory.

Marbella was more innocent, less advanced and in some ways chicer than it is today, but the world was not without its drama. As British prime minister Tony Blair tried to be cool, Robbie Williams sang Millennium, David Beckham made football cooler than it had been since George Best, and US President Bill
Clinton was acquitted in impeachment hearings. The Euro was officially launched though it would only replace the Peseta three years later. America broke its agreement with Russia by inducting Poland, the Czech Republic , and Hungary into NATO in the very year that NATO bombed Yugoslavia’s
capital Belgrade during the Kosovo War.
Yes, there were protests, earthquakes , and wars, and in Kuwait women lost the right to vote. Hong Kong, Macao (formerly Portuguese) also reverted to Chinese rule, while in Russia , Boris Yeltsin resigned to make way for a new leader, Vladimir Putin. ›

Much of what happens today has its roots in those times, but the economy was booming, we were living la vida loca and about to embark upon a new era, the third millennium. It was a little scary but also exciting, and the transition to the digital world had already begun, complete with new words and concepts such as blog, texting, vaping , and a phrase that would become prominent over the next 25 years – carbon footprint.
For all that, the turn of the century was an era of petrol-guzzling Hummers. Turbo Diesels were on the rise and electric vehicles were still seldom heard of. Elon Musk and Jezz Bezos were not household names yet and AI and Covid were science fiction. We had the Internet, but it was all still in its infancy, so exciting as technology was, the world was still largely as it had been for so long. It was a slower, gentler existence,
where some poor buggers could be reached by pager almost all of the time, but the smartphone connected to the Internet had yet to happen.
As we look back at 25 years of essential Magazine, recall Marbella 25 years ago and let memories come flooding back, it is maybe interesting to make a balance sheet of pros and cons – something that every person has to do for themselves. e

WATER
This persisting dry season has been a reminder that we often fail to appreciate the things we have until we experience their absence firsthand. Whether it's our relationships, our health, or in this case, the uninterrupted flow of drinking water from our taps, we tend to take these blessings for granted. But how frustrating it is when there isn't enough water pressure for a relaxing shower after a long day, or to wash the car on a sunny morning?

WITH THE
‘ZERO DAY’ APPROACHING, A NEW FORM OF INVESTMENT IS EMERGING
The rainfall during Semana Santa provided some relief, but it's crucial that we approach the future with a comprehensive strategy rather than relying on emergency measures, drawing lessons from experiences at individual, social, local, national, and global levels to better prepare for potential water challenges ahead.
SWEET OR SALTY?
For months, news in Andalucía has been dominated by the drought and the resulting measures, prompting many to profoundly consider this tiny compound of two hydrogen
and one oxygen atoms that flows freely into our homes. Just as our brains are composed of about 70% water, nearly two-thirds of Earth's surface is covered in it. However, 97% of this water (approx. 1.4 billion km³) is found in oceans and seas, making it costly and energyintensive to make it suitable for drinking. Prat de Llobregat, Europe's largest desalination plant located in Catalonia, produces water at 70 cents per 1,000 liters, which is three times more expensive than their traditional tap water production.
Globally, there are approximately 20,000 desalination plants, with 60% of their output used for public drinking water. After
Saudi Arabia and the USA, Spain ranks 5th with 770 plants in operation, producing over 5 million cubic metres of desalinated water daily which is enough for 34 million people. The Junta de Andalucía plans to further increase the number of desalination plants by the end of this year, including adding mobile ones in Estepona, Vélez-Málaga, and Fuengirola, while expanding capacity in Marbella's existing permanent plant to produce 12 cubic hectometers per year, doubling its current output.
Looking past the oceans, only about 2.5% of Earth's water is freshwater, with 69% frozen in ice sheets and glaciers, leaving less than 1% available for drinking. ›

Freshwater sources include surface water (like lakes and rivers), groundwater (from subground to aquifers and deep underground sources), and atmospheric water vapour. Groundwater, supplying roughly 50% of the world's drinking water, holds immense strategic importance for humanity. Those who access groundwater enjoy its renowned quality, rich in minerals and pleasing taste, both from taps or bottles. Unlike purified or desalinated water, natural mineral water retains its purity
without human intervention, maintaining its beneficial substances.
MAD MAX AS THE NEW REALITY?
The European Commission's draft text highlights water scarcity as a pervasive threat to various facets of life: food and water supplies, energy and transport infrastructure, economic activities, and human health.
Numerous factors contribute to this issue, with accelerating climate change being a prominent concern. Southern
Europe, for instance, has been witnessing overall declining rainfall and rising temperatures. Spain this year faces significant challenges with a 2% decrease in average rainfall, and with the Iberian Peninsula’s temperature increasing 1.1 to 2°C annually. To put this into global perspective it is estimated, that with each 1°C rise, 500 million more people endure a 20% decline in renewable water resources. Projections suggest that approximately 75% of Spain could face desertification by the century's end, as according to data from the UN Environment Programme, it contends with being Europe's driest country.
Population growth is another widely discussed issue, with water needed by the entire planet. The uneven distribution of availibility and
SPOTLIGHT | WATER « BACK TO CONTENTS ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM » 88 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
population density leads to more severe water scarcity in certain regions. According to the UN, more than 2 billion people currently lack access to sufficient clean drinking water, with approximately 10% of the global population residing in areas facing high or critical water scarcity. UN estimates project a global population of 9.8 billion by 2050, accompanied by a 1% annual increase in global water usage. By this time, the OECD predicts that 60% of the world's population could encounter water challenges, particularly affecting low-income
families.
In addition to climate change and population growth, factors like agricultural demand, pollution, inadequate water recycling, economic growth, infrastructure issues, lack of knowledge, and wasteful practices contribute significantly to water scarcity.
THE BLUE GOLD
Water, a renewable yet finite resource, grows in value as demand rises, adhering to fundamental economic principles. Referred to as the ‘new liquid gold’ or ‘blue gold’
for years, water, alongside data, is poised to become the most precious resource of the 21st century. Simultaneously, competition for water resources is escalating, sparking cross-border conflicts and potentially leading to wars over water control in the coming decades.
As emphasised by the UN's specialised water policy program, ‘water is power’, enabling those who control its flow to wield influence in various ways. Consequently, control over water equates to control over people. ›
89 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
The social and geopolitical significance of water resources cannot be overstated. Throughout history, great empires and civilisations, like Mesopotamia and Egypt, thrived along major rivers. Despite technological advancements enabling development in waterscarce regions, these countries still grapple with maintaining living standards and progress. Cape Town in South Africa, serves as a cautionary example. Facing the looming threat of ‘day zero’ – the potential suspension of water supplies due to rainfall deficits and inadequate reserves – the city underscores the consequences of irresponsible water management.
TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS FUNDING REQUIRED
The impact of water scarcity extends beyond social, geopolitical, and ecological realms to financial and economic spheres. Investing in the water sector yields both short and long-term economic benefits. Investors are beginning to respond to the concept of water as ‘blue gold’ by exploring various opportunities and as with any crisis, this heightened interest prompts the emergence of diverse forms of investment in the water sector.
Substantial improvement is called for across the entire water supply chain, including collection pipes, pumping stations, filtration, to water loss reduction technologies, and wastewater treatments, that are all critical parts of
this complex system. Global estimates project financing requirements for water infrastructure to reach $6.7 trillion by 2030 and $22.6 trillion by 2050, excluding irrigation and energy enhancements. Given the scale of these challenges, public sector contributions alone are insufficient, so businesses and private investors will have a key role to play.
While according to one estimate, water scarcity has the potential to hinder growth by up to 6% of GDP in certain regions, on the other hand, Water.org estimates that achieving universal access to basic water and sanitation could yield economic benefits exceeding €17 billion through reduced mortality rates alone.

INVESTOR REACTION
As water scarcity intensifies, diversification into waterrelated stocks is gaining popularity, presenting a socially responsible investment opportunity. While water itself cannot be traded directly, investors can purchase shares in companies within the sector. Given the escalating scarcity and demand for water, coupled with technological advancements, such investments are poised to yield increasing returns over time. For those who prefer a diversified approach, exchangetraded funds (ETFs) like the Invesco Water Resources ETF or the World Water Index (WOWAX) offer exposure to the world's top 20 water companies.
The market has swiftly responded to increased investor demand amid the crisis, leading to the emergence of amazingly creative and innovative solutions in the water sector. Why not consider diversifying your wealth by
including water stocks alongside traditional assets like securities, real estate, or gold? Some progressive, forward-looking companies now offer investors the opportunity to enrich their portfolios by including a water component in a value-proof form, a liquid asset that can be extracted at any time. ›

Investing in mineral water wells is an excellent avenue for this.
It's no surprise that the economy, especially the investment market, seizes every opportunity, particularly in times of crisis, as it is a well-known adage that ‘it's better to buy in a war.’ And the response to the water crisis has given rise to a remarkable product, allowing financial investors to allocate their wealth to an instrument where demand is assured. This is expected to lead to a rapidly growing market with high returns. However, access to water resources is limited, making the acquisition of new water sources increasingly difficult and expensive over time. Nonetheless, demand for water is projected to rise even further. Currently, the
entry price for this emerging opportunity remains relatively low – one can acquire a high-yield mineral well with a renewable supply for the cost of a well-located apartment in Marbella. However, this is likely to change soon.
WHERE IS THE POTENTIAL?
It's evident that Spain, particularly Andalucía, won't play a significant role in this market. However, living on the Costa del Sol doesn't necessarily mean a person’s wealth originates from there. Upon exploring options, it becomes apparent that European mineral water powerhouses like Germany, Italy, and Hungary offer the best investment opportunities in this field. When considering mineral
water wells, factors like the premium water quality, extraction volume (experts recommend a minimum of 200,000 m³ per year for a viable business), and surrounding infrastructure such as utility connections and the buildability percentage of the property within the purchased project are crucial. Additionally, regulations in certain areas that may prevent others from constructing similar wells nearby, further limit the options.
It's no coincidence that Hungary, alongside Germany, was among the first countries to offer mineral water wells to investors. Situated in the heart of Europe, Hungary boasts a seemingly inexhaustible water supply, pristine groundwater, and

a remarkable 159 certified mineral waters, owing to its location in the Carpathian Basin. As a true mineral water superpower, Hungary is poised to emerge as a significant player in the global water market in the near future.
According to Mr. Nagy, Head of BlueGold Project, a Hungarian team that mediates premium-quality mineral water wells: "This form of investment can be made swiftly and without specialised expertise, as meticulously selected wells with premium water quality and exceptionally high water yields are always accompanied by the necessary permits, certifications, and technical specifications, essentially turnkey. The end user typically
establishes a mineral water or soft drink bottling plant. With over 25 years of presence in the Hungarian market as a project developer and intermediary, our company solely focuses on large-scale, premium-quality mineral wells, primarily catering to financial and professional investors. Investing in highquality mineral water wells not only presents a unique and invaluable opportunity but also holds the potential for long-term, stable wealth creation, thus appealing to financial and professional investors."
CHANGE BEGINS WITH US
Amid uncertainties
surrounding climate change and depleting resources,
one certainty remains: change begins with us. While global strategies and technological advancements play crucial roles, individual actions matter greatly. While addressing water scarcity requires more than just education and behavioural changes, the significance of individual responsibility and action cannot be overstated.
Let's take steps towards conservation, starting with simple actions like shorter showers, turning off water while brushing teeth, and fixing those leaky taps.

KUMULUS WATER
A BOUNTY FROM THE ATMOSPHERE
We are all familiar with morning dew, those small drops of water that appear on our cars and other surfaces during the night when the air is cold. Formed from condensing water vapour, it is similar to rain, making our shoes wet if we walk across the grass in the morning. This natural process is what has lead to the creation of Kumulus Water.
WORDS JAMES SINCLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF KUMULUS WATER
The story behind its conception is fascinating.
Back in 2021, the company’s Co-Founder and CEO, Iheb Triki was involved in a four-day camping trip in the Tunisian Sahara Desert with a party of others, an undertaking that meant transporting copious amounts of water for the team. As well as seeing lots of plastic bottles discarded by previous visitors, he noticed that each morning the tents they were sleeping in were dripping wet with
water droplets – in the desert! Surprisingly, the Sahara Desert can actually have a humidity as high as 80 per cent.
Being an Ecole Polytechnique Engineer, a UC Berkeley MSc graduate, and a renewable energy and water sector professional with a diverse work experience, it didn’t take long for him to envision capturing the water and overcoming the dependency on all the harmful plastic. As he thought about it, a dream began to form to devise a means of extracting water
from the atmosphere so that families everywhere could have a source of fresh water.
Together with co-founder, Mohamed Ali, they perfected a system that not only produce s many litres of water daily, but that also renders the water safe for drinking. So began the birth of the Kumulus Water converter, a machine that is simply connected to the mains but can also operate solely from solar panels if desired – ideal for installing in off grid locations, like the desert! ›

The concept was so appealing that it was selected by the Tunisian government and the European Innovation Council as one of the most promising startups eligible for EIC funding and went on to raise $1,000,000. This was the impetus the fledgling company needed to start an expansion drive with the recruitment of qualified staff and the launch of a production programme. Both partners were conscious of the aesthetics of the project. They wanted the finished article to
be beautiful, as well as practical and robust – strong enough to resist extreme temperatures – and elisted designer, Zouhair Ben Jannet to turn their prototype into a viable product. He settled on a design which is a modern reinterpretation of the amphoras which were used by the ancient Greeks and Romans for transporting and storage. Sustainably made from injection-moulded recycled plastic, the final article – the KumulusOne Amphore – looks futuristic with sensual curves in a gleaming white finish.
So, how does the machine work? It is actually a marvel
of engineering, drawing in air from its surroundings through a circular neck which is fitted with a high-quality air filter to remove dust and particles. The inflowing air is then cooled to condense its water content, which is collected and passes through a series of filtration procedures to remove all bacteria. The cleaned water is given a mineralisation treatment and is completely safe for drinking. In fact, Kumulus Water complies with European safety standards, holding CE certification and is approved by the World Health Organisation. ›

Kumulus can produce more than 30 litres of water each day and works most efficiently in areas with high humidity, delivering the first litre within around an hour from start-up. The unit has a storage tank with a capacity of 10 litres which, when full, cuts the power from its source, so it can continue operating overnight without incurring any additional running cost. The water is delivered through an elegant tap which is operated from the LED touch screen, in turn being remotely controllable
via the Kumulus app.
As well as providing a vital resource in times of drought, Kumulus presents a potential solution for the many people around the globe who do not have access to clean drinking water, a serious problem which looks set to exacerbate in the coming decades. It is also an enticing proposition for hotels, leisure complexes, sports clubs, gymnasiums, garden centres, educational establishments, factories, and offices.
Combining purchase, maintenance, and running costs, Kumulus Water costs less than 10 cents per litre over an initial five-year analysis, and this cost will continue to significantly decrease during the lifetime of the mac hine. Pretty good value for a system that, as well as its stellar looks, allows you to become selfsufficient, plastic free, lowers your carbon footprint, and reduces your water bills.

Few Hollywood stars have shone as brightly and risen as rapidly as Anya Taylor-Joy. Her remarkable journey in the industry reaches new heights with her latest role in the eagerly anticipated film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Known for her captivating performances, Taylor-Joy has not only garnered critical acclaim but also a host of prestigious accolades. In 2021, her exceptional talent was recognised in The Queen’s Gambit in 2020 with a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film.
In Last Night in Soho, The Menu, and Amsterdam she excelled as someone thrilled to be in a space where her star shines.
Her trajectory in the world of entertainment has been nothing short of meteoric. Identified early in her career as a rising star, she was spotlighted by The Hollywood Reporter in their 2016 list of Hollywood’s under-35 luminaries.
W magazine echoed this sentiment in 2017, highlighting her as a burgeoning talent to watch, while Forbes followed suit giving her a coveted spot in their 30 Under-30 list. Time magazine’s 2021
inclusion in its 100 Next list, celebrated her as a leader shaping the future, with a tribute penned by chess legend Garry Kasparov, further cementing her status as a global icon.
Beyond film and television achievements, Taylor-Joy has become a distinguished ambassador for several high-profile brands, including Viktor & Rolf, Tiffany & Co., Dior’s fashion and makeup, and Jaeger-LeCoultre, showcasing her versatility and appeal across various spheres.

YOUR CO-STAR IN FURIOSA, CHRIS HEMSWORTH, SAID THAT HE WAS INVIGORATED BY WORKING ON THE SET, DESPITE BEING EXHAUSTED BEFORE HE EVEN BEGAN. HOW ABOUT YOU?
Shooting Furiosa in Australia was like being on another world. I had to take a moment to process what was happening, and I can safely say the seven months we were working on this project rank as some of my
most defining and fulfilling in the time I have been in film. There are some moments that just stay with you, and feel special not just in the moment, but every time you look back.
WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE?
I am firm believer in the idea that you get out what you put in. For this, we all put in a lot, from day one, the most possible. We were all so charged and so driven – our excitement and passion poured into it.
Ultimately, this role was the grimiest and most blood-soaked I’ve ever experienced, which is quite a thing to say, I guess. Whenever I have the opportunity to be messy or bloodied, rather than flawlessly neat and pretty, I’m truly enjoying myself. That’s when I feel most at ease and most passionate. ›

AREN’T YOU IN A NOTORIOUS ROAD MOVIE, YET YOU CAN’T ACTUALLY DRIVE IN REAL LIFE?
I don’t hold a driver’s license, so regular driving, like on a highway or parallel parking, is beyond my skill set. However, I can pull off an impressive 180 in a truck without endangering the camera crew, which is a plus [laughs].
One day, when I have the time to stay in one place, I’ll get my driver’s license. As for my initial experience with cars, I’ve been rather spoiled since they were crafted by the Mad Max art department. YOU’VE SPOKEN AT LENGTH ABOUT HOW IT TOOK YOU A WHILE TO GET BACK TO NORMAL AFTER THE PANDEMIC. IT WAS REFRESHING TO HEAR YOUR FEARS AT A TIME WHEN MANY WERE TOO AFRAID TO SPEAK OPENLY…
Thank you. I am back to normal but it’s clear a lot of
us aren’t and I do find that very sad. It has affected some people perennially – it’s still in all our consciousnesses; so maybe I am not totally back to normal, but I am certainly in a place where the fear is no longer prevalent.
What is true is that after so long working in different ways, and for a spell of time not working at all, I am dedicated and driven to take every opportunity and to work harder than ever before, and that’s what I have been doing. INDEED, YOUR WORK METHODS HAVEN’T CHANGED MUCH THOUGH, HAVE THEY?
Well, no, because in many ways I’ve always worked at 100kph. I’ve always been admiring of actors who can be calm and not nervous when they don’t have projects on. I’m not like that – I couldn’t be. I need to be active, moving along, looking for the
next thing. I am lucky in the sense that I’ve always had momentum in the projects I work on, without taking on too many and diluting what it is I give to each.
DID THE VOGUE COVER CHANGE YOU?
It was a fantasy thing, I guess – something most young girls dream of when they begin to find a way in entertainment and culture. Of course, the perception versus reality is very different with these things, and much like is the case when you make a movie. That whole process of putting together a twohour drama is something that is very stunted, drawnout, labouring, and very unHollywood; yet what you see as the end result is everything you imagine this industry to be like.
And I guess in a way photoshoots are much the same thing – they are regimented, finickity, awkward too. So, I guess what I am saying is the idea of the cover is in some way greater than the actual experience… and perhaps that’s true of so much of what we undertake, look forward to and, indeed, look back on in life.

The Queen’s Gambit
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND IN TERMS OF EGO, HUMILITY, ETC?
I don’t find that too difficult at all if I am honest. In New York, there were huge billboards featuring my face, but I never had the chance to see them myself. However, I believe this has been beneficial for my mental well-being. I was constantly moving from one project to another, which didn’t leave me any time to ponder whether this success was affecting me too much.
In 2019, I filmed Emma, followed by just a single day’s break before starting Last Night in Soho and then, after another day off, I moved on to The Queen’s Gambit. I recall being ready to begin Soho the next day, and I told myself, ‘You have one hour to cry. One hour to let it all out, to appreciate the amazing experience you’ve just had and then you need to shift your focus to tomorrow’s tasks.’
However, I’m interested to see how things will pan out in the future, especially now that I have a bit more personal time in my life.
I HEAR THAT YOU HAD A BIT OF AN UNORTHODOX WAY OF LEARNING ENGLISH WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG…
I actually learned a lot of English from Harry Potter books! They were the ones that connected me with the English language when we first moved here, and as much as I rebelled against that at first, ultimately, I was swept along by those stories, and they opened my eyes to the language at the same time.
Yet the thing is that although I do speak with a clear and soft English accent because of my time in London and growing up there, I don’t always speak that way. It depends on the people who I am speaking to and who I am around at the time.
So, I may seem as if I am a quaint and well-spoken young English lady, but say I am with other English people who are dropping a few letters and speaking a bit more Cockney, that can rub off on me.
I think it’s good to be able to change a little bit and God-knows it could help me get future roles that I would never have even thought about reading for, in the future [laughs]. ›

THERE WERE LOTS OF RUMOURS SURROUNDING THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT AND IT NEVER DID GET A SECOND SEASON, HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE A MUSICAL. BUT HOW GREAT WAS IT TO DO THAT AND TO HAVE CAPTURED AN AUDIENCE OVER LOCKDOWN IN 2020 WITH 62 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS WATCHING IT IN ITS FIRST 28 DAYS?
It was a lovely role and, of course, I was absolutely thrilled that it became such a big hit, but some things do need to be left and the producers were clear that there was an endpoint. I think we wrapped it at the right place.
Even before we started,
I had read the book and it became so apparent to me that I was falling completely head over heels in love with the main character, Beth. As soon as I had read it – which didn’t take me long, because I couldn’t put it down – I felt like it would be an amazing adaptation if someone was thinking about making it.
Lo and behold, director Scott Frank was making it and yes, I did think it would be a good watch and I was intrigued to see how he would do it for the screen. But did I think it would reach the astronomical number of viewers that it has on Netflix? Not for a second.
I was actually up on the side of a mountain, barefoot, in the freezing cold when the whole thing was blowing up and it was becoming clear people really liked what we had done. It was very special.
They’re turning it into a musical and I think that is a sensitive way of extending
its lifespan. I don’t think a second season can take you anywhere beyond where you have been.
BUT WE SHOULD NEVER SAY NEVER IN THIS INDUSTRY?
I guess not, and I guess that is true, but someone would need to write a second book first!
WITH SO MUCH SUCCESS, INCLUDING YOUR CHERISHED GOLDEN GLOBE, YOU MUST NOW HAVE THE CONFIDENCE THAT THIS IS A CAREER THAT WILL BUILD AND CONTINUE TO FLOURISH?
I will never take anything for granted. I am eternally grateful for the success I have had, but I won’t progress any further in my career without hard work, dedication, and humility.
I never assume the next project is around the corner. In fact, I usually assume there is a challenge waiting for me. It’s a fear of the future that energises me and I am grateful for that perspective and approach. e

There’s something of a Diva Fever taking over the coast, and when you see Melissa and Toni in action you know exactly why!

Melissa Carver and Toni
Leigha didn’t know one another a year and a half ago but now they are inseparable. “We’re inseparable because we work together but also because we’ve become the best of friends,” laughs Toni, and it’s reflected in their performances. In fact, it’s the finishing touch that adds the sparkle to the talent, energy, and
vocal power they bring to their live shows. “I think we go down so well with the audience because we give off a happy vibe and good energy, and that accompanies the music and the enthusiasm of everyone in the venue to create a fantastic evening.”
Both originally from England, Toni hails from Manchester and Melissa grew up on these shores. The Costa del Sol is home to both of these young ladies, and they are very happy to have found one another. “I’d had fun
performing with different artists when I was younger but was going through a difficult time in my life when Toni and I met,” says Melissa. “Toni is a little older than me, so very much like an older sister who can give you good advice and support based on personal experience. It helped me get through a tough patch, grab life by the horns again and ultimately resulted in a professional collaboration that has a real spark of magic to it.” ›

A DUO IN HARMONY
The two started practising together and found that their voices and vocal ranges complemented each other very well. “It began with me giving Melissa feedback on her performances, continued through constructive suggestions and coaching, and ended with us singing together until we realised we had something pretty cool

going on,” says Toni. “Naturally, it took a good deal of practice to get our harmonies in sync, work on our music selections, our shows, and our overall presentation, but it came together in a surprisingly natural way, and having seen each other through trying times we’ve also developed a very close friendship that’s at the heart of our professional relationship too.”

They might call themselves singing divas, but in reality there’s none of that – these are two of the happiest, friendliest young women you’ll come across, and they get on brilliantly. “There is no female jealousy or competition between Toni and myself,” says Melissa, “and we complement each other in different ways, with her being more creative and me being someone who likes to put things into motion. It’s a great mix, as we have no problem taking each other’s advice and in this way keep tweaking and improving all the time.” In addition, both Melissa and Toni write their own music, and now they have begun composing together and are aiming to release their own EPs soon.
POWERFUL PERFORMANCES
Whether it’s their powerful vocals,
their energetic performances or their bubbling energy – or more likely a combination of all the above –Melissa and Toni have created a loyal following wherever they perform, from La Sala by Puerto Banús and Max Beach in Calahonda to Olivia’s in La Cala de Mijas. As the name Diva Fever suggests, the show is packed with powerful ballads, feel good moments, and songs by the great female artists. “We cover both the classics and new hits, playing what people like to hear but also always trying to surprise them with those numbers that you love but don’t hear so often,” says Toni, “and we don’t just stick to the genre of female artists. If we like a male star’s song and we think we can make it work we’ll definitely include it too.”
From Whitney and Mariah to NSYNC,
The Weeknd, and many more, expect to be enthralled by stirring vocal power, raw energy, and performances that are the icing on the cake of the Costa del Sol way of life. “We’ve come a long way in a short period of time,” says Melissa, who like Toni also finds the time for musicals. “We’re enjoying our work to the full, which for us
is more of a calling, living in the present, finetuning our product all the time and giving off and receiving good vibes every time we perform. It feels like we’re just at the beginning of something truly special.”

THROUGH THE LENS OF QUANVISION
Frank Knipschild has seen the world change before his lens, and with his company Quanvision has evolved with it, recording promotional campaigns in a wide variety of business sectors both here and abroad.
TRENDS | PEOPLE « BACK TO CONTENTS ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM » 134 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN
Frank was a young man when he arrived in Marbella from The Netherlands, but he’d already developed the technical and creative skills that would form the basis for Quanvision, the video and stills production company he founded here 20 years ago. What started small soon evolved into a boutique production house for medium and larger scale projects and productions.
“It was an interesting time,” says Frank, “our original home market was the Costa del Sol, where we produced a lot of promotional visual
material and short films for resort hotels, property developments, and businesses both newly founded and wellestablished.” It was during this boom period on the coast that Quanvision also gained an important footing on an international basis, starting in Frank’s home ground in Holland and expanding from there.
Before long, his work caught the eye of international agencies and companies, leading to commissions for well-known brands and the larger-scaled productions that this entails. “It was more complicated work, required larger teams and more planning and coordination, but it was
also great fun and the kind of challenge we relished. I would liaise with the project coordinators abroad, plan everything in advance down to the last detail, and fly in with our own team.”
Having earned his stripes in the yachting industry in The Netherlands, Quanvision soon became known as specialists in creating dynamic moving visuals, so he and his team spent several years at international boat shows, filming the latest creations in both yachting shipyards and hanging from the speed boats as they raced across the water. “You had to have the stomach for it, but it produced wonderful visuals.” ›

GIVING EXPOSURE TO AN AIRLINE
Commissions of this kind took Frank and his colleagues, Michael Denker and Manuel Calvo, to work in locations across Europe and North America, where they filmed everything from promotional ad campaigns and short films to covering product launches, conferences, and sporting events. This level of exposure brought Quanvision to the attention of one of the most ambitious airlines at the time.
“Turkish Airlines had a carefully laid out plan to evolve even more as a major global player,” says Frank. “It seemed an overly ambitious scheme to many, but they knew what they were doing, had a detailed plan and the means to execute it, so they set about contracting the specialist companies that could help them realise it.” Quanvision’s role in this process was to produce the visual content for the many top international sports events sponsored by Turkish Airlines to raise
the company’s brand profile.
“We filmed golf, tennis, and other sports competitions sponsored by Turkish Airlines and from this produced a range of promotional material that went all around the world. In fact, since many of these sporting events were not just one-off tournaments but actually formed part of roving championships, we travelled with them to different countries and continents, being taken there in style by the airline itself.”

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
While Quanvision still works on an international basis, in recent years the weighting has to a certain extent shifted back in favour of the Costa del Sol again. “Property, tourism, and construction booms as well as the founding of new businesses in the area always lead to a lot of activity for us, and we can count on highly active clients such as Grupo La Quinta, Jamena, and Terra Meridiana, for whom we produce all types of visual content.”
Following Covid, Málaga once again became the most important market, but Frank continues to work abroad as well, and while modern technology has reduced the size of the core team and the amount of equipment they need to carry around with them, big productions still require a certain amount of logistics. “We’ve always evolved with the times both in terms of technology, style, and the services we offer, but it’s amazing how you can still be surprised after all these years.”
He refers to a recent incident
VISITESSENTIALMAGA
in the USA where, after dozens of successful visits to America over the past 20 years, the team was refused entry into the country. “We had been contracted by an American start-up company to film their new product line then under development, just as we’d done for years in locations varying from the USA to the Middle East and Asia, but on this occasion it wasn’t New York or Miami that we flew into but the more provincial airport of Detroit.”
Seeing Europeans arrive with camera equipment, the security personnel soon separated them from the others arriving off the plane and began interviewing them in a process that ended up becoming an interrogation. “After several hours of this we were told that we were not allowed to film in the
USA without a specific work permit, escorted back to the aeroplane by what looked like bouncers, and only received our passports back when we landed in Europe again.”
Ordeals of this kind, however, are few and far between in a 20-year career that has taken Frank Knipschild across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, from his homebase in Marbella. “It’s great to travel but it is also great to work on our own doorstep and help represent businesses, projects, and resorts in a visually appealing way. The work and technologies have evolved but the creative process remains important and fun, and that’s what we do best.”

BLACKSHAW A world of design discoveries awaits at the Paolo Castelli showroom by Blackshaw
NEW
What started as a boutique interior design company has grown into a broadly integrated business that incorporates property sales, interior styling, and full renovation projects, making Sally Blackshaw a leading female entrepreneur with the home as her fount of inspiration.
VISIONS THAT TAKE SHAPE
Sally learned her trade in London, studying interior design and working with leading studios until she made the move to Marbella, where she collaborated on projects with local stylists before founding Blackshaw. “It was and continues to be my main focus, and is the business from which everything flows,” says the designer whose knowing eye includes not only home decoration and furnishing but also entire construction and development projects. ›

European influences both internally and architecturally, but always within the context of the home, the client, and the setting.” This includes the capacity to work with the finest high end quality soft furnishings and finishes, a feature that has since become highly prized by many a homeowner. “We brought a softer touch of elegance and style to the homes we decorated, and to great
visual effect.”
That said, hers is an approach characterised by creative flexibility and the desire to design for each individual home. “We have a very broad palette to work with, including the finest fabrics from Britain, France, and Italy, as well as top Spanish and Italian furnishings and our own team of craftsmen and artisans.
Taken together, it means we can accommodate just about every taste and home configuration, and produce fresh new home interiors in a wide variety of styles.” ›

GROWTH WITH THE HOME AS THE BASE
Sally’s approach, along with hard work, design flair, and a very personable way of executing projects paved the way for success, with a growing portfolio of homes decorated and revived evolving into clients asking
her to take on renovation projects that involved interior and exterior styling as well as project management, reconstruction, and landscaping. “What began as an occasional request has now grown into a fullyfledged division of the business.”
Blackshaw now takes on full renovation and reconstruction projects as part of which older homes are given an updated architectural design and interior styling, including also upgraded technical infrastructure to bring properties of this kind right up to date. “Many of the potentially most beautiful homes situated in the very
best locations are in need of such treatment, and when done well it produces a home that competes with the top new builds.”
The success with which she both designs and project manages has led investor clients to approach her to also work on commercial home renovations for them. “Some clients recognised the potential to work together. They see the possibilities for fruitful investment and believe in my ability to deliver on time, on-budget, and to produce something that the market will readily snap up. I now work with them on a regular basis, and in the process, we bring such homes back to life.”

BLACKSHAW ESTATES
Before long, Sally also began to receive requests to find suitable homes for investment, and this expanded into overall home finder applications. “We found ourselves straying into searching for the right kind of property for our clients to buy or invest in, and found that we were good at it.” The process grew to the point where it made sense to establish a dedicated operation and provide this service on a fully structured, professional level. “It was never really my intention to found a real estate company, but it works well and is very complementary to our other activities, so it’s been a great success.”
What started small continues to grow, developing in unison with the other divisions of the company to provide a fully integrated service that can begin with a home search and end with interior styling or even a complete renovation project. “The objective with all this is to offer our clients a beautiful home to step into and start enjoying,” says Sally. With regard to that she has recently realised a longstanding ambition to col laborate more closely with one of her all-time favourite designers, Paolo Castelli. ›

Strangely, I somehow knew it would happen and now it has.” She met the Italian designer and furniture maker during a recent visit of his to Marbella, and a connection was immediately made. “We got on straight away, ending up spending a long time talking about design and architecture in general but the details and nuances of the work in particular.” ›

Sally was excited to have made such a strong connection with someone she admires so much within the field, and as the dialogue continued it also expanded into discussions about Blackshaw becoming the official representative of Paolo Castelli for the Costa del Sol and Málaga. “It all just flowed so naturally, and now we have completely renovated our showroom just up from the copper tower on the Golden Mile to dedicate the whole space to the brand and it’s wonderful collection of furniture.”
Sally’s excitement grew when she flew to Bologna to visit the factory and meet the team. “I was there to select pieces for the showroom that would be best suited to the Marbella environment, but they invited me to view the furniture design and manufacturing process, and even asked for my feedback,” says Sally, for whom this is the start of a wonderful collaboration. ›

Ambience Home Design is a well-established and highly respected name in Marbella, yet businesses grow in cycles and the company founded by Andrea Böck is in the process of major developments, resulting in, among other things, a superb new showroom on the Golden Mile.
“Reflecting on the past year, it has been a whirlwind of creativity and growth for our team,” says Andrea.
“We’ve been fortunate to embark on a variety of projects, ranging from mid-sized refurbishments to the exciting challenge of overseeing three expansive newbuild endeavours in La Zagaleta and Los Flamingos. These larger-scale ventures allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in both the intricacies of interior architecture and the finer details of interior design, culminating in what we like to refer to as turnkey projects – a seamless fusion of our expertise and our clients’ vision.” ›

The finest materials and craftsmanship come together
It was by no means the first time Ambience Home Design had worked on a construction project integrated into interior design, but the three undertaken last year were the largest and most ambitious to date. “It required another level of planning and project management on top of the creative work,” says Andrea, “but I’m very pleased to say that we rose to the occasion and completed a project that we can be truly proud of.”
FROM MARBELLA TO ASPEN, AND BEYOND
As one of the design studios that has helped to give shape to the contemporary Marbella home interior style,
you would be forgiven for thinking that Ambience Home Design does not stray far beyond the confines of the Costa del Sol, but nothing is further from the truth. “Our projects have ranged from Spain and the UK to Germany, the Middle East, and many other countries, and recently we also had the pleasure of finalising the design for a wonderful home set within a magical landscape in Aspen Colorado.”
For Andrea and her team, it cannot be denied that there is a true thrill in working abroad, experiencing new physical environments, different light and landscapes, as well as the architecture and interiors

We meet Ivica Jurikova, an abstract artist who is inspired by nature — particularly natural minerals and geodes, crafting luminous crystal artworks that enrich both life and space. For Ivica, art isn't merely a hobby but a lifelong passion.
Her artistic journey commenced in the Czech Republic, where she honed her skills in fused glass, immersing herself in the country's rich glassblowing traditions. Under the tutelage of masters, she uncovered the enchantment of molding molten glass into awe-inspiring pieces.
"In the United States, I had the privilege of collaborating with renowned glass blowers
at the Pilchuck Glass School", says Ivica. Their mentorship refined her craft, leading to the sale of glass artworks in prestigious venues such as the Trump Hotel and Wynn in Las Vegas.
Life's path then led Ivica to Luxembourg, where she delved into the art of ceramics. Working with clay unveiled a realm of possibilities, allowing her to explore texture, form, and the tactile essence of art. ›

Now residing locally in Andalucía, Ivica aspires to establish the largest art and glass centre in the region. It's envisioned as a vibrant hub where artists and art enthusiasts converge to create, collaborate, inspire, and revel in the joy of art.
Grateful for the opportunity to share her artistic vision, Ivica aims to infuse each abstract wall artwork with love, passion, and the desire to evoke joy in the hearts and homes of her audience.
Her latest creations are these unique luxury wall clocks that are handmade using resin and crystals on a wooden base. They are customisable in a varity of colours and styles in sizes ranging from 30 cm to a meter in diameter.

TRANSFORMING THE
CANCER BATTLE
THE REVOLUTIONARY IMPACT OF DENDRITIC CELLS

Let me share with you an exciting advancement in the field of Cancer Medicine: the so-called Dendritic Cell Therapy. Most people don’t know, and this includes many members of the medical community, that the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to the brilliant Canadian scientist Ralph Steinman in 2011, for his discovery of the key role of Dendritic Cells in bolstering immunity. This innovative approach is transforming the way we think about curing cancer. Thanks to this finding, we can support the immune system and boost the body’s immunity to prevent relapse.
Dendritic Cells are a critical component of our immune system. They serve as sentinels that detect and present invaders like cancer cells to other immune cells, who then start eliminating them. Hence, Dendritic Cells have the power to activate the whole immune system against the cancer. This happens without the use of chemicals or medication. The simple yet simultaneously innovative concept of the therapy is based on the patient’s own blood. Dendritic cells are extracted from the blood and activated in a lab. After less than two weeks, they are reintroduced through a serum containing millions of these cells, ready to fight the cancer. ›

HE POSSESSES EXPERTISE IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL FIELD AND IS EXPERIENCED IN TRAINING HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS AND ESTABLISHING PATIENT SUPPORT PROGRAMS. This is one of the most important breakthroughs in the field defined as Personalised Medicine: through a tailored approach, the risks of immune rejection and adverse reactions are reduced to a minimum, while the effectiveness is maximised.
Not only can this lead to an improvement in the short term, but at the same time a very important longterm effect is achieved: an immune memory is established. This means that as soon as the same cancer identity is presented again to the immune cells, an immune response is triggered. This leads to the destruction of the cancer cells, preventing recurrence and providing long-term protection.
As I mentioned before, this incredibly powerful tool resides within our body, holding the potential to address numerous future challenges.
Unfortunately, the conventional
approach is insufficient to reverse or stabilise the disease in many cases. Therefore, patients need new tools to fight cancer. Dendritic Cell Therapy offers a new way to achieve this, without harming other cells or having a negative impact on the patient’s body. Through the introduction of these empowered cells, the patient’s immune system is reprogrammed and boosted towards an increased immunity.
Today, Dendritic Cell Therapy is available in most European countries, even though it is only mainly accessible through private health care providers.
Nevertheless, I am confident that this therapy will emerge as a key player in the medical landscape of the future.
It is time to change the therapeutic strategy and approach, focusing on the immune system, which is the key in the war against cancer. e

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT TRAINING
BOOSTING THE HUMAN-PET BOND
When it comes to training your pet, positive reinforcement is usually recommended though in a small set of circumstances, negative reinforcement can be useful. If you have a pet you’d like to train to walk on a lead, sit, or react calmly when guests arrive, then learning a bit about both approaches can help.
WHAT ARE THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT APPROACHES?
When it comes to training, the terms ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ are not judgments of quality or kindness but simple indicators of whether a human adds or takes away. Positive reinforcement involves rewarding good behaviour to increase the frequency of a desired behaviour, while negative reinforcement removes a stimulus or stops a behaviour on the spot to eliminate it. For instance, if your pet bites you, screaming “Ouch!” loudly to show them that this behaviour is not acceptable, is considered negative reinforcement.
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT CAN BE USED WITH DOGS AND CATS
Both positive and negative reinforcement techniques can be used with dogs and cats, though trainers recommend aiming for a positive approach when possible. For instance, you may have a cat that jumps up on the kitchen counter. Instead of spraying it with water (negative reinforcement) place a cat tree in the kitchen, encouraging your kitty to use it and rewarding it with treats when it does. Keep your countertop free of food or items that can pique its curiosity.
“WHAT
IS LOVE EXCEPT ANOTHER NAME FOR THE USE OF POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT? OR VICE VERSA.” B.
F. SKINNER
216 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN LIFESTYLE | PETS « BACK TO CONTENTS ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM »
Give the reward immediately after the positive behaviour to ensure your pet understands what behaviours you wish to see. Next, customise the reward to your pet’s needs. Most enjoy tasty treats, but some may respond better to praise or play. Avoid over-feeding it by breaking treats into smaller pieces. Be consistent and ensure everyone in the home rewards the same behaviours.
WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT?
Below are two specific instances where the technique can be helpful:
RECALL
If you visit dog parks or dogfriendly beaches, then one skill your dog should perfectly hone is that of ‘recall’. Start by teaching your dog to recognise its name, giving it treats and praise when it responds. Choose a short, snappy word such as ‘here’ to call it or use a whistle and add a visual cue (such as opening your arms to the sides) in case it can’t hear you. Always reward your dog when it returns to you. Start at home, then practice this skill outside, gradually increasing the distance you allow it to venture forth and making sure you have high-quality rewards to entice it with.
VISITESSENTIALMAGA
WALKING ON A LEAD
When you go for a walk, reward your pooch when it walks by you calmly, without pulling at the lead. Extend the lead and add distractions little by little. If it tugs or leaves your side, stop and wait for it to come back before moving ahead.
DEALING WITH EXTINCTION BURSTS
While training your dog or cat, you may find that it demonstrates ‘extinction bursts’. These occur when your pet tries to get what it wants by resorting to old behaviours. Let’s say you have taught it that when it jumps up and down and barks (in the case of dogs) or when it meows for food (in the case of cats) you will ignore it. At first, your pet may decrease these negative behaviours. However, it may grow frustrated and display a burst of bad behaviour (such as jumping, barking, or meowing more intensely) to get your attention. Consider this a sign that your training method is working! If you continue to ignore it, the behaviour will eventually stop.
ADVANCED POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT TECHNIQUES
The following techniques can help you achieve the desired behaviours in your pet:
» If your pet exhibits positive behaviour without your command, reward it. This technique, called capturing, reinforces good behaviour without the need for training.
» Correct your pet gently if it displays the wrong behaviour, steering it towards the right behaviour and rewarding it appropriately.
» In the early stages, reward your pet for behaviour that is close to the behaviour you desire. You can also lure it into a desired position with treats.
» Finally, end all your training sessions with play, praise, or a treat. Keep sessions short and snappy so your pet looks forward to them.
And don’t forget that practice makes perfect. Positive reinforcement is worthwhile not only because it provides results, but also because it strengthens the bond between you and your pet! e

WAY OF LIFE WHEN A HOME MEANS A
Navigare Properties does not just make homes, it creates the setting for a lifestyle. Today, people look for more than just a beautiful property alone – the wish for a special quality of life draws them to beauty spots such as the Costa del Sol, and in the hands of a visionary boutique developer this can open the door to a lifestyle you didn’t think was within your reach.

Innovative thinking begins with creativity, a vision of how something could be different, better. Often, it has its origins in personal experiences, so when the founders of Navigare Properties saw how difficult it could be to find the right accommodation, amenities, services, and also private properties to own in certain locations, it got them thinking. There had to be a better way to tie these various elements together more fluently and create a more rounded, more enjoyable experience. Coming from the rental management
and finance fields, they founded Navigare Properties, a specialist rental management company that blends together tourism, real estate, and investment by creating stylish homes in top destinations and offering concierge services and resort amenities.
It was the first of several innovations that would flow out of the concept, including the creation of the Navigare Experience Program, which enables owners who buy with Navigare Properties to have access to a range of similar properties in Mijas and Saas-Fee, one of the
classic Swiss ski resorts nestled in a beautiful valley in the south of the country. “It opens up a wide choice of leisure options, including yachting, ski, water sports, and more,” says Carmen Kearney Rozas, Destination and Project Manager at Navigare Properties. The homes have a resort feel about them, with the kind of on-site amenities and concierge service that transforms conventional luxury villas and chalet apartments into a destination in their own right. “With Navigare Properties, the lifestyle experience begins on your doorstep.” ›

HOW YOUR HOME CAN OPEN UP NEW POSSIBILITIES
The concept of a second or holiday home is not new, but it hasn’t evolved so very much over the past few decades. Until now, that is. Navigare Properties is among the pioneers of a new way of thinking that enables you to do so much more than just own a bricks and mortar property. “What we offer is just that – the chance to own a stylish modern villa in a beautiful setting such as the Costa del Sol – but also the option to enjoy more.” This includes resort-style amenities within your own community, as well as concierge services that blend the best of a private home with the convenience and comfort of a hotel. However, the innovative approach of Navigare Properties to owning a house in a second home market has allowed it to evolve even further and open up a whole new range of lifestyle possibilities that you perhaps haven’t even been aware of.

INTELLIGENT HOMEOWNERSHIP
If you think of it, having a property stand empty a good part of the year while you continue to spend on it is not the most logical solution. It is an option that is of course entirely open to people who buy one of the modern villas created by Navigare Properties in the green hills of Mijas, but the opportunity is also open to use the property as a well-maintained holiday home within a stylish resort community, earn income through highend rentals from what is ultimately an important asset, and use the property by
opening the door to top accommodation and lifestyle experiences in exclusive destinations.
It’s the kind of innovative thinking that has seen Navigare Properties select a female-led development and management team on the Costa del Sol and choose Mijas as its preferred destination to create a stylish gated community of modern villas surrounded by natural greenery, close to all amenities and endowed with spectacular country and sea views.

DIVERSE I NVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES PART 2
Diverse investment opportunities continue to present themselves in various regions such as the UK, Spain, and the Middle East, offering investors a range of options to consider. When it comes to making investment decisions, investors often seek a balance between asset growth and generating income from their portfolios. One key aspect that many investors focus on is the potential for passive income, which can provide a steady stream of earnings over time.
One popular investment strategy that investors can explore is investing in off-plan developments, particularly in desirable locations where rental yields are projected to be high. Investing in off-plan properties at the early stages of construction can offer significant returns, with rental yields potentially ranging from 20% to 30%. However, it is essential for investors to carefully consider the risks involved and conduct thorough research
before committing to such investments. In regions like Spain and Dubai, short-term rentals can be particularly lucrative, especially during peak seasons when rental prices can soar. Choosing the right location for investment properties is critical to maximising rental income potential. Additionally, investors can benefit from comprehensive support services that handle property management and rental operations, making the investment process more streamlined and hassle-free.

The old sales office has been given a makeover and is now home to a small shop stocking the essentials and a bar and café, run by the experienced team from Nova Café. On the lower floor is Artemis Global Art Gallery, which features work by leading Dutch contemporary artists. The new hub additionally has a satellite office for real estate agents Cloud Nine Spain, to support buyers and sellers of properties within the resort and raise the profile of Monte Mayor among the Costa del Sol’s agents and buyers.

POLYNESIAN SPLENDOUR
As you approach the restaurant, gazing up at its majestic Polynesian pyramid, you already sense that a special occasion awaits and this is reinforced on entry. Before you stretches an expansive domain of refined luxury with a rarefied ambience, and your eye is immediately drawn to the front terrace, which overlooks a beautiful curving bay with stunning views across the Mediterranean.
A sense of space prevails, with grand tables immaculately clad with white linen cloths, elegant rattan chairs with comfy cushions, solid wooden flooring throughout, and large folding glass doors onto multiple terraces, all of which offer sublime vistas. To one side, the open kitchen faces a well-stocked bar, with its own exterior drinks terrace, and there are many other noteworthy features, such as the commanding chimney for cooler days, impressive wine cabinet, and the stage area for live entertainment.
Our party of four settled into a privileged position on a lovely sunny afternoon close to the terrace doors, from where we continued to be mesmerised by the panorama of both Gibraltar and the North African coastline being very clearly discernible directly in our line of vision. We sipped on refreshing cocktails over a plate of Prime Iberian Bellota ham while we perused the menu. Consisting of a Tiki Mule, Zombie, Tiki Margarita, and a Mango Twist, they were the perfect tonic for the setting, contributing to our utmost relaxation as did the super friendly staff who made us feel right at home. ›

DELICIOUS DISHES TO DEVOUR
Under the guiding hand of Txema Palacio, the Executive Chef of the Besaya Group who hails from Bilbao, the menu is centred on Mediterranean cuisine and is nicely divided into sections: From The Sea, From The Land, Fish, Meat, Rice Dishes, Tacos, and includes plenty of vegetarian options. There is also a Best Seller Menu, with a choice of starters, mains, and desserts, which includes water, coffee, wine selection, and a welcome glass of Cava.
Our starters arrived with a fanfare – particularly the unveiling of the smoked burrata with pesto, truffle, tomato cream and sardines, which dispersed an enticing smoky aroma across our table. This was eagerly shared alongside a truly excellent Salmon Tartar, a creamy Caesar salad with crispy chicken, and Homemade truffled beef tenderloin croquettes. ›

These delectable bites really set us up for the main course to follow and, once again, we were not disappointed, with our choices of Caramelised Salmon with miso, pak choi and ‘Buerre Blanc’ of lemon, Glazed Angus beef ‘presa’ served with wheat, mushroom and black garlic alioli, Prawn, avocado and mango tacos, and the famous house dish of Hot stone prime cut beef sirloin, permitting us to sizzle the meat to our own preference at the table. To accompany, a selection of sides is available, such as a green salad, mashed potatoes, or French fries. We had been sorely tempted by the Arroz con carabinero (Red king prawn rice), but that will have
to wait for another occasion. Well sated, we eventually succumbed to dessert, and were extremely glad to have done so with the flaky Millefeuille with cream, the deliciously tangy Lemon pie, and the spectacular Chocolate textures all exceeding expectations. Over coffee, we were in full agreement that the quality and presentation of the servings are a supreme match for the character and elegance of the premises. With a full range of Champagne, Cava, wines and spirits to complement any meal or occasion, Tikitano By Besaya is a wonderful venue for a visit with family or friends, as well as for business meetings, company events, parties and weddings.

THE ARZAK LEGACY BURNS BRIGHTLY WITH
ELENA ARZAK
252 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN GOURMET | CHEFS « BACK TO CONTENTS ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM »
Spain is the country with the fifth-largest number of Michelin stars – a total of 333, divided among 271 restaurants. Only 15 restaurants have three stars and one of these is Arzak – the famed restaurant run by Juan Mari Arzak and his daughter, Elena. It is no less than serendipitous that Elena should have been born with her father’s talent, work ethic, and authentic passion for cooking. The Arzak legacy is long and fascinating, having commenced in 1897 – when Juan Mari’s grandparents built the house that today houses the emblematic Arzak restaurant.
Arzak was originally opened as a wine cellar and tavern.
In time, Juan Mari’s parents converted the home into a restaurant that was known for the refined, tasteful Basque cuisine whipped up by chef, Paquita Arratibel. Juan Mari took over in 1966, learning the essence of traditional cuisine from Paquita. It didn’t take long for his own
talent to shine – at the age of just 32 years, he received the National Gastronomy Prize (Spain’s top culinary prize) and obtained the first Michelin star for Arzak in 1974. He went on to receive a string of prestigious awards and in 1976, he cofounded ‘La Nueva Cocina Vasca’ alongside chefs like Martín Berasategui and Pedro Subijana. The movement was based on fresh produce, creative presentation, and new culinary techniques. The chefs additionally embraced the use of local, seasonal ingredients, highlighting the quality and diversity of regional delicacies. Arzak received its second Michelin star in 1977 and its third in 1989 (an honour it has maintained ever since). And a large part of the kudos can undoubtedly go to Juan Mari’s daughter, Elena. ›

Elena, who speaks four languages, joined the family restaurant in the 1990s, having studied in Switzerland and honed her craft in Europe’s best kitchens – including Maison Troisgros, Pierre Gagnaire, Carré des Feuillants, and Le Vivarois in France. She discovered more culinary secrets at Le Gavroche in Lonon, Antica Ostería del Ponte in Italy, and the unbeatable El Bulli in Spain. She has achieved many prizes over the years, including the International Academy of Gastronomy’s Chef de l’Avenir (Chef of the Future) award, Veuve Cliquot’s Best Female Chef Award, and the very same prize won by her father – the National Gastronomy Prize. Today, she joins him in fanning the flames of what is undoubtedly one of Spain’s most internationally renowned restaurants. She told the press that her father “has always believed in the potential of young people. It’s one of the reasons I decided to stay at Arzak. I knew that I would be permitted to do many things… it’s a decision I never regretted.”
Elena is far from a carbon copy of her father. She explained to El Mundo that her father is more into blending a myriad of ingredients and she uses less… that he is more
into spices and she, into forgotten ingredients:
“Although we are very different, we both make decisions quickly and when we taste something, we tend to have the same opinion.”

Juan Mari still heads to Arzak every day, something that Elena considers “a gift.” She has said many times that her father will always be her boss. “He is my maestro,” she says. She describes the fare they prepare as “cuisine with a distinct identity… one that is Basque, contemporary, and researchbased.”
She states that while the culinary profession is more recognised than in the past, she feels that she is “simply someone who cooks,” adding that she has had to learn many new skills over the years, including dealing with the media, giving conferences, and honing her knowledge in sustainability. When asked by El País reporter, Paz Álvarez, what it feels like to
be stopped on the street for an autograph, she replies that she looks just like any other “señora from San Sebastían,” and often just blends in with the crowd. Despite her humility, she always stops and attends to those who approach her and admits that she enjoys having her photo taken with chefs when she visits their restaurants.
Elena’s cuisine combines vision with tradition and keeps sustainability at the forefront. She recalls that today’s chefs must listen to what farmers have to say. “Prime produce is always best when it is local; I will always trust the provider I know best.”

THE MYTHICAL SPANISH WINE VEGA SICILIA
VISITESSENTIALMAGA
In the world of wine, few names evoke the same veneration and aura as Vega Sicilia, even though the name in English, ‘Sicilian meadow’, probably means little to a wine lover. This Spanish winery, nestled in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region, has ascended to legendary status, captivating oenophiles worldwide with its extraordinary products. What also sets Vega Sicilia apart is its distinctive tradition of selling by annual allocation.
WORDS ANDREW J LINN
Vega Sicilia has attracted a devoted following of enthusiasts and connoisseurs, including some notable figures in history. Winston Churchill’s famous endorsement of it as one of his favourite wines helped elevate it to the pinnacle of the wine world.
The story of Vega Sicilia began in the mid-19th century when Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, a Spanish nobleman, returned from a journey through Bordeaux, bringing with him French grape varieties. He planted these vines on the family estate, which would later become Vega Sicilia, blending the best of Bordeaux techniques with the unique terroir of Ribera del Duero.
Z I EN ENILNO EROMROF ! ONLINE IN OUR HYBRID DIGITAL EDITION video 260 | MAY 2024 | MARBELLA, SPAIN GOURMET | WINE « BACK TO CONTENTS ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM »
Vega Sicilia slowly gained renown for its remarkable wines, but it wasn’t until the 20th century, under the ownership of the Álvarez family, whose Enebro Group also owns Codorníu, that it took off. One of the defining features is the practice of selling its wines using a rationing system. Each year, a limited quantity of bottles is made available to established customers, typically through a subscription or allocation system. Nonetheless, a quick search for Vega Sicilia on the Internet will reveal hundreds of offers of the bodega’s wines at varying prices, mainly thanks to the fact that the wine has a reputation of being extremely long-lasting in the bottle.
The Ribera del Duero region, where Vega Sicilia is located, boasts a unique terroir characterised by its high altitude, extreme temperatures, and calcareous soil. Various other factors impart distinctive characteristics to the wine, including Vineyard Management: Vega Sicilia maintains strict control over its vineyards, employing sustainable viticultural practices to ensure the health and vitality of the vines.
Winemaking Expertise: The winemaking team at Vega Sicilia possesses unparalleled expertise and experience, honed over generations of meticulous craftsmanship. From harvesting
and fermentation to ageing and blending, every step of the winemaking process is executed with precision and care, resulting in wines of exceptional balance, structure, and finesse. Vega Sicilia wines are renowned for their extended ageing in oak barrels, which imparts complexity, richness, and nuance to the final product. The winery employs a combination of new and seasoned barrels, carefully selected to complement the characteristics of each wine, allowing for gradual maturation and development over time. Much favoured are huge barrels holding thousands of litres, and there are those who maintain that their maturing process contributes greatly to the quality.
The prices of Vega Sicilia wines can vary widely depending on factors such as the specific vintage, the cuvée or blend, and where it’s being sold.
Vega Sicilia produces several different wines, including their flagship wine Único, as well as its other prestigious labels, Valbuena and Alión.
The basic grape used is Tinta Fina, known elsewhere as Tempranillo. The only other ingredient is Cabernet Sauvignon, with the percentage being used entirely dependent on the vintage: in some cases as little as 3 per cent and in others as much as 25 per cent being added. The final blending decision is taken by the head
winemaker, and in this bodega’s case each of the different wines will have its own blend.
Vega Sicilia’s annual allocation system is not merely a logistical strategy but also a key component of its successful branding. Much like other iconic luxury products with double names, such as Moët & Chandon, Rolls-Royce, and Dolce & Gabbana, Vega Sicilia leverages its scarcity and prestige to cultivate an aura of exclusivity, elevating its status beyond that of a mere beverage, and positioning its wines as symbols of wealth and discernment.
