Since edition one of Onboard Magazine hit the streets, expansion has been the buzzword at Vitesse Yachts. We’ve been busy widening our range of products and services to cater to customer demand and have plenty of new ventures to showcase in this second edition.

P

erhaps most obvious is that we’ve added a brokerage arm to our traditional charter, boat management and training business. This is a logical progression for Vitesse Yachts as many of the boats we have for sale have been maintained by our team so we know their history and the standard of care received. Vitesse Yachts has also taken the opportunity to diversify and is especially proud to have been offered exclusive dealership for the Balearics for Humber Ribs. Established almost 50 years ago, this leading UK manufacturer has a wide range of sport and leisure ribs which will appeal to the Balearic market. Not only will we be marketing Humber Ribs for sale, we’ll also be adding them to our charter fleet for the casual user. The final piece of news is that our website, www.vitesseyachts.com, has received a

facelift. A fresh new design will take into account all of the changes that have taken place at Vitesse Yachts whilst also increasing communication with our customers. We now have a designated client login area where yacht owners can keep track of charter bookings, maintenance and so on and we’ll also be posting a fully interactive version of Onboard Magazine online helping us to reach a much-increased audience.

Paul has a long history with boating, over 30 years, as he qualified as an instructor in both waterskiing and scuba diving from an early age – skills that have been passed on to his two children age 12 and 13 who are now both qualified open water divers. Paul first came across Vitesse Yachts 11 years ago when he chartered a yacht for a family holiday in Mallorca. He was so taken with the Balearics that he had three more years of chartering from Vitesse Yachts until finally buying his own boat, which he of course entrusted to the company to manage. Paul bought into Vitesse Yachts in 2008 and, although his main business interests are in England, he is helping to direct the company’s growth and maintain its excellent reputation in the Balearics. Paul and his family try to spend as much time as possible on the Balearics which have gradually become their second home.

Since the tender age of eight Will has been brought up on yachting enjoying his parents’ boats in Poole. But it was when he watched the original Cowes– Torquay powerboat race as a young lad that he was inspired to get involved resulting in a decade of UK and international racing at the highest level. Eventually Will decided to slow down and had a more sedate life in corporate powerboat charter. After a while, fed up with constant rain, Will moved to Mallorca to join Vitesse Yachts’ team where his passion for boats became a full-time career. Will’s role within the company has changed over the years and, whilst still very much hands-on, he’s now focussed on the new Humber Rib venture, brokerage and looking after marketing.

Diane has been with Vitesse Yachts for six years and, together with David, manages the company as well as heading up Accounts. Her first foray into boating was some 12 years ago when Diane handled corporate events for Cowes Week in the UK. She then went on to work in Salterns and Hamworthy Marinas in Poole, Dorset, before heading out to warmer climes. Diane now lives close to Puerto Portals with her two girls and they love to cycle, swim and snorkel together soaking up the Mediterranean lifestyle.

David has been involved with boats since childhood whilst his career with a luxury yacht manufacturer spans more than two decades. A move to Mallorca four years ago fulfilled David’s dream to continue his passion for luxury power boats but in the warm, dry climate of the Mediterranean. Joining Vitesse Yachts in 2008, David holds dual roles of joint-managing the company with Diane and heading up the Service Support Department keeping the fleet ship-shape and ready to go. David’s other passion is sports cars; he likes nothing better than to spend time in the garage with his head under the bonnet of his Morgan getting her ready for a spin around this stunning island.

After many years of boating in Mallorca, Tracey decided to make a permanent move to the Island some 14 years ago. Tracey has been with Vitesse Yachts from day one and now heads up the Charter and Brokerage Departments. Her role is both demanding and rewarding but Tracey relishes the daily challenge and takes great pleasure in tailoring every charter to meet individual’s needs. In her spare time Tracey devotes herself to her sons and raising money for various charities in Mallorca. It leaves little time for relaxation but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

j-p u J-P began instructing in 1993 for Southern Sailing School in the Solent and has notched up impressive qualifications over the years. He became a Yachtmaster Instructor Sail in 1997, Yachtmaster Examiner Sail in 2003, Advanced Powerboat Instructor in 2005 and most recently a Yachtmaster Instructor & Examiner Motor Cruiser and Personal Watercraft Instructor in 2008. He is also qualified to teach shore-based theory courses including Day Skipper, Coastal & Yachtmaster, SRC/VHF Radio and First Aid. Living in Mallorca for four years, J-P was appointed chief instructor for Vitesse Training in March 2008. J-P is never more comfortable than when he is on the water - “I have one of the best jobs in the world – I get the opportunity to work in a wonderful environment where I can infuse my passion for yachting into a huge variety of people from all over the world.”

Making a 40th birthday bash utterly memorable is always a challenge. So how on earth do you impress when faced with a joint 40th to celebrate? Charter a yacht, that’s how. And that’s exactly what Les and Mark did. REPORT SARAH DRANE

W

ith fabulous Mallorca decided as the location, friends made the long journey from the Caribbean and family flew in from the UK for a two-day charter for 12. The boys chose a Fairline Phantom 50 with wide sunbathing areas and plenty of fridge space, both at the flybridge wet bar and in the galley, for chilling the hard stuff. The scene was set. On a textbook-perfect June day the dynamic dozen rendezvoused at Cappuccinos, a popular breakfast haunt on the quayside at Puerto Portals, and fuelled up with coffee and croissants in anticipation of a pair of action-packed days. Then, clutching armfuls of towels, hats, sun lotion and cameras, it was time to join the yacht and create some birthday memories. Despite having a couple of experienced yachtsmen in the party, a wise decision was made in opting for skippered charter. Erik, an affable Norwegian captain, was busy onboard stowing pre-ordered provisions and making final checks. He was to become a key character in the adventure, not only safely steering the boat through the Balearic waters, but also imparting local knowledge, sharing dubious Scandinavian jokes and ensuring that glasses were kept charged at all times. Bikini-clad ladies already slathered in lotion supine on the bow and, despite the sun from being far from over the yardarm, men with beers at the ready, the Fairline left Puerto Portals. Bathed in sunshine, guests enjoyed a sedate cruise around Mallorca’s

salubrious south-western tip passing Santa Ponsa, Paguera and Andratx before arriving at Sant Elm, the furthest west on the Island. A personal recommendation from Erik. Sant Elm is an idyllic spot. A protected national park with the island of Sa Dragonera as its centrepiece, the bijou resort is famed for its fish restaurant, Cala Conills, and team Les and Mark were happy to leave the skipper in charge of the menu. Having delivered guests young and old to shore with the aid of the tender, Erik colluded in a supply of warm bread with ali oli, fresh fish platters and chilled pink champagne topped off with coffee and Hierbas – Mallorca’s famous herbal liquor – a drink that was to become a motif of the holiday. Much to the amusement of other diners, and soon to be joined by a menonly group on an adjacent table, the newly forties dived into the restaurant’s shorefront swimming pool for a cool-off. A slightly dead-beat dozen then made their way to the tender for shuttle runs back to the Phantom. Once again, Erik impressed with his local knowledge and took a leisurely route back. First skirting the circumference of Sa Dragonera which, on its unseen western side, rises to an impressive 360 metres circled by gulls and falcons. The captain took us up-close and personal almost within touching distance of the rocks in a captivated silence. We then dipped in and out of Port d’Andratx, an elite but easygoing marina where fishermen vie for attention alongside the expensive motor yachts, before nosing into a cave swirling with bats

and rhythmically dripping with water. A cave only a seasoned Balearic skipper would know of its existence, and how to manoeuvre expertly into its mouth. A few thirst quenchers and siestas later and the Fairline eased its way back into Puerto Portals laden with more than satisfied customers. A dozen pairs of sea legs coursed up to the famous Wellie’s pavement terrace for a tasty snack in the slowly setting sun, accompanied by a tipple of new-friend Hierbas, before retiring to land-based accommodation for a good nights’ sleep in preparation for day two. Equally as balmy as day one, day two kicked off with a more sturdy breakfast at trendy Diablitos in Puerto Portals to fight the indulgence of the previous day and face the amusement of the coming day. Ever perceptive, Erik scheduled just enough cruising to blow away any cobwebs before pulling in to anchor at Portals Vells, a u

dreamlike cove with translucent turquoise waters - the not-so best-kept secret amongst Mallorca’s yachting fraternity. Anchor down and music up, the birthday revellers joined a gaggle of other motor yachts all fascinated with the picturesque setting. A few giggles were cast in the direction of the naturists snorkelling and sunning off neighbouring Playa El Mago before many of the group were enticed into the tranquil clear waters for an invigorating dip surrounded by shoals of silvery fish. Erik self-nominated on jellyfish watch but none were to be found and soon appetites were ready for lunch. Unassuming at first glance, the beach restaurant at Portals Vells is another treat for fish lovers. Some taking the opportunity to exercise with a swim, others taking the tender, a trip to this eatery was an inspired choice. Fresh fish, succulent

prawns, browned potato chips and crisp salads were devoured hungrily washed down with cool rosé and refills of water. Coffee (and Hierbas) rounded the meal off under the dappled shade of pine trees. Rustic surroundings, but first-rate food accompanied by several toasts to the birthday boys. Eager to eke out the last rays of the sun and the last few hours onboard, the cruise back to harbour was unhurried and lazy. Frank Sinatra crooned from the Fairline’s smooth sound system and it was a time for reflection on an incredible two days. Whilst, for most of the group, the holiday was to stretch ahead onshore in Mallorca, the boat, and most importantly Erik, were to be missed. E

asily one of the Island’s most amazing beaches, Es Trenc is a four-kilometre stretch of sand lapped by turquoise seas that would not look out of place in a Caribbean holiday brochure. Right on the south-eastern tip of the Island, Es Trenc is a little awkward to get to by road and parking is a pricey daily rate, so you’re far better travelling by boat. Upon arrival you’ll soon realise you weren’t the only one with that bright idea as in high season there will be many yachts resting at anchor, but do make sure you take the tender ashore and explore up-close. Completely devoid of heavy residential

development, the white sands are backed by pine-clad sand dunes woven with heather and grasses. Although officially a nature reserve (and popular with both naturalists and naturists) Es Trenc does have a wide supply of sunloungers, sunbeds and a couple of refreshing beach bars. Interestingly, just behind the beach, stretch the Salines de Llevant salt pans which attract 170 species of migratory birds as well as gourmets keen to purchase the various varieties of Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc made with olive, rose and wine. Harrods even stock this fine Mallorquin produce.

A

t the other end of the scale is Cala Deià, a real treasure of a find on Mallorca’s rugged western coastline. A favourite with writer Robert Graves, at first glimpse the tiny bay doesn’t appear to have much to shout about – just 200 metres of shingle and a ramshackle beach bar – but its beauty is compelling. The cove has jagged cliff faces and looming boulders which provide a dramatic backdrop to the deep, clean, emerald waters which just invite you in for a swim. Again, much easier to access by boat than by road, the Cala can get lively at peak season although many retreat as shadows are cast across the beach by late afternoon. Keep your camera to hand, Cala Deià is also good for a celeb spot, after all Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have a pad just around the corner.

or a completely different flavour, and within easy distance of Palma and Puerto Portals marinas, you might want to drop anchor at one of these two neighbouring beaches. Magalluf has almost two kilometres of wide sand whilst Palmanova actually comprises three beaches, Torrenova, Son Matias and Playa de Palmanova, the last of which is the most expansive at over 500 metres. Each with current Blue Flags, the coveted tag given to only the best beaches who comply with all 29 of their environmental, safety and water quality criteria, the waters are clear and the sands impeccably maintained. A paved promenade snakes the length of Magalluf beach bursting with bars, cafés and restaurants whilst water sports are in abundance. Jet-skiing, parasailing, banana boat rides and pedalos can all be hired if your boat lacks in the toy department. The top tip for both Palmanova and Magalluf is to go in the morning; weary night owls don’t hit the beach until after midday…

our kilometres down from Magalluf, in the south-western tip of Mallorca, is the three fingered inlet of Portals Vells made up of 100 metre wide Sa Caleta de Portals Vells, 70 metre wide Sa Platgeta de Portals Vells and the nudist beach of Playa El Mago – Mallorca’s first official naturist spot. They share two eateries between them and Sa Caleta has plenty of sun umbrellas. The epitome of picture-postcard, this dreamlike beauty spot with crystalline turquoise waters is well-known amongst the yachting fraternity. The u

Boasting more than 200 beaches and 42 marinas at last count, it’s a wonder how Mallorca packs it all into its dainty 554km of coastline. And, with arguably some of the most picturesque maritime scenery in the entire Mediterranean, the Island is a Mecca for the yachting fraternity who are mesmerised by the sparkling waters and endless opportunity for sporting activities. Here’s Vitesse Yachts’ lowdown on Mallorca’s finest beaches and ports. REPORT SARAH DRANE

inlet attracts many vessels on a sunny day which all cosy alongside each other testing the mooring skills of even the most proficient skipper, especially when the wind makes a change of direction. Just to the left of the main beach sits a cave containing the rudiments of a chapel. Rumour has it that fishermen built it in the15th century to give thanks for a safe return home. The caves are not natural, but carved out to source stone for the building of Palma Cathedral and the entire inlet sits within a Natural Area of Special Interest.

uerto Portals’ home beach, just east of the harbour wall, is perfect for a stop-off on the way back from a busy day at sea or indeed just when you don’t fancy voyaging too far. Popular with all nationalities, particularly the Spanish at the weekends, the beach is wide and sandy with the usual array of sunloungers and sunbeds. Home to a bona fide sea school, Portals Nous is a great spot to learn sailing,

canoeing or windsurfing in the swell-free waters which are sheltered by an island just a few hundred metres offshore. By far the biggest draw at Portals Nous is Roxy Beach Bar found on a natural promontory at the far end of the beach. Perfectly orientated to the west, capturing the last of the sun’s rays as it dips towards the sea, the tasty bar food, chilled drinks and equally chilled bar staff attract dozens of boats in to moor at the end of the day. Take your tender and moor alongside the bar or alternatively Roxy Beach will happily collect you in theirs.

itesse Yachts’ home port, 670-berth Puerto Portals, was inaugurated in 1986 and has matured to become one of the best marinas in the Balearics in terms of service and capability to moor boats of up to 80 metres in length. Because of this it attracts a well-heeled clientele who feel very much at home amongst the designer boutiques and fancy restaurants which line the quayside. A favourite with the Spanish Royals and international celebrities, there’s always a good selection of supercars to admire and there’s always a billionaire’s megayacht or two in port. Some eateries cater directly to that moneyed clientele. A meal for two at Tristan’s, the only two Michelin starred restaurant on the Island, will set you back hundreds of euros and even has a water menu with bottles priced from seven to 119 euros. However more affordable dining is available including the newly-extended famous Wellie’s Bar and Cappuccinos, both of which have extensive terraces for Puerto Portal’s favourite sport – people watching.

een to steal Puerto Portals’ crown is Port Adriano. Right on the southwest corner of the Bay of Palma, backing one of Santa Ponsa’s famed golf courses, this marina is currently undergoing the most lavish of facelifts. First built in 1992, the existing 404-berth arrangement is being extended to add 82 brand new moorings for yachts between 20 and 60 metres in length. Philippe Starck, perhaps the most famous designer on the planet, is in charge of designing the new commercial area with 4,000m² of new shops and dining outlets as well as some fancy decorations in the common walkways plus an iconic signature lighthouse. When complete, sometime after 2011, Port Adriano will also count a scuba diving centre and a sailing school amongst its offer. This marina could well become a reference point for large yacht owners across the globe. Watch this space.

Puerto de Sólle

n striking contrast, 450-berth Puerto de Sóller on the northwest coast of the Island is more classic than contemporary. With a fine naval history, Sóller is now known and loved as a traditional fishing port. The handsome horseshoeshaped bay fringed with pine-forested slopes is oft-photographed and much admired. Giving off the air of a grown-up very genteel seaside resort, Puerto de Sóller offers a decent clutch of bars and restaurants as well as banks, supermarkets and gift shops. The beach isn’t worth writing home about though, stony and tricky in bare feet. Two curiosities not to be missed are the rattling old wooden tram which dates back to 1913 and delivers passengers from Sóller town, some four kilometres away, and trundles across the waterfront until the Port. And, lastly, the makeshift ‘container bar’ which comes to life every evening slap bang in the middle of the quay – perfect for making friends with other boaters.

ala D’Or is a smart purpose-built marina u resort which still manages to retain Mallorquín charm. Whilst the 563-berth harbour itself oozes class with expensive toys tied to anchor and stylish bars and restaurants fringing the quayside, the surrounding coastline is typified by white sandy bays and lush Mediterranean vegetation. Cala D’Or is therefore a perfect base for exploration of Mallorca’s eastern edge. The countless small coves from the traditional picturepostcard fishing ports of Cala Figuera and Porto Petro to the blink-and-miss it Calas Ferrera and Serena with their postage stamp beaches flanked by turquoise waters are quite enchanting. One of Cala D’Or’s highlights is its swanky Yacht Club which combines business facilities with a fully-equipped gymnasium, bistrot and bar and swimming pool area – all with breathtaking marina views. Well worth a visit.

his wide, long, natural bay at the southwestern segment of Mallorca assumes an air of a laid-back Portofino with its colourful lattice of buildings and forested mountainsides. Attracting yachties from far and wide into its two neighbouring marinas – 475-berth Club de Vela and 228-berth Port d’Andratx – it’s a thoroughly pleasant place to spend an evening sipping sundowners at one of the many pavement cafés and restaurants fronting the harbour. Sedate and everso slightly elite, Andratx has an excellent selection of fish restaurants serving up the day’s catch fresh from the nets just a few paces away.

Int oxicat ing For some a two-week holiday in Ibiza means an all-inclusive hotel deal on the promenade in San Antonio. For the Weldon family it means something quite different. Last summer they took a head-turning Princess V53 motor yacht across the water from Mallorca to Ibiza and had an altogether more sedate experience of the beautiful ‘White Island’. REPORT SARAH DRANE

erry, husband Paul, and children Elizabeth (12) and Edward (13) are seasoned boaters and big fans of the freedom afforded by a holiday afloat. With Paul, a proficient skipper, and the rest of the family on-hand as crew, they choose to use the waters around the Balearics as their playground and their Princess as their moveable hotel taking each day as it comes. “With two long weeks at our disposal we were in no hurry to get directly to Ibiza so we planned some scenic stop offs along the way,” Kerry says, “leaving Puerto Portals on a sunny Sunday morning our first port of call was Sant Elm, a beach haven at Mallorca’s extreme southwest edge. Despite its tiny population Sant Elm is home to one of the most loved restaurants in Mallorca – Cala Conills. A lunch here always involves plenty of fine wine and fresh fish delivered daily from the nearby Port of Andratx.” “Perched right on the water’s edge,” Kerry continues, “Cala Conills looks out across the bay to the lofty four-kilometre long island

of Sa Dragonera, a designated natural park renowned for its flora and fauna. Better still, the restaurant has an inviting turquoise swimming pool on the shorefront which entertains Elizabeth and Edward whilst we settle down to a digestif in the afternoon sunshine. We anchored here for the night ready for a bright start in the morning.”

With no set routes or timetables, bareboat charter opens up the possibility for impromptu adventure every day. The Weldons skirted the coastline from Botafoch round to the highly fashionable celebritymagnet of Ses Salines and then dipping in and out of the stunning coves and bays that pepper the western coastline of the Island.

Some six kilometres south of the White Island lies the lesser-known island of Formentera. Populated by less than 8,000 people and more known for its pristine Caribbean-like beaches than its wild nightlife, Formentera makes for an idyllic chill-out session before the relative vibrance of Ibiza. The Weldon family whiled away a couple of days exploring the Island’s sparkling clear waters, deep caves and inviting beach chiringuitos. Next stop - Ibiza.

These isolated coves backed by pineclad mountains are ideal for scuba diving – music to the ears of the Weldon family. Paul qualified as an instructor in both waterskiing and scuba diving from an early age and these skills have been passed on to Elizabeth and Edward who are now both qualified open water divers. With the Princess fully loaded with scuba diving equipment the trio can be occupied for hours leaving Kerry to focus on a suntan and a good holiday read.

“On calm seas and at a steady speed, Ibiza is really only a couple of hours from Mallorca,” Kerry continues, “there’s no qualms about being lost at sea for as soon as Mallorca pales out of sight, Ibiza comes into view. That’s the beauty of boating around the Balearics, it’s quite effortless. After the tranquillity of Formentera we headed straight to Ibiza Town’s main marina, Botafoch, which was to be our base for the fortnight. This decision was made as not only did we have some friends staying onshore in the Town but we also prefer the security of having shore power, fresh water and a fuelling quay to hand without having to give it a second thought. Besides it’s the ideal address for exploring the rest of Ibiza.”

A must-stop for the Ibiza coastal tour was Villa Mercedes, one of Paul’s favourite restaurants at the heart of the Port of San Antonio. In stark contrast to the glare of the nightclubs, Villa Mercedes was once a traditional Ibicencan house which has been transformed into an elegant eatery with a fusion menu and polished service. With sprawling landscaped gardens and romantic views across the marina and San Antonio bay beyond, it’s a real retreat, especially with the flamenco chill music chorusing in the background. “Although we dined out a lot in the evenings,” says Kerry, “we were just as happy rustling up meals on board with the

aid of the superbly-equipped and surprisingly roomy galley. Our yacht had an open-air barbecue perfect for simple meat and fish dishes whilst lunches were usually big healthy salads with ingredients bought from the fresh markets on the Island, all accompanied by a few glasses of wine – well we were on holiday.” A 53ft by 14 ft space doesn’t sound like the most grandiose of environments for keeping two lively youngsters entertained for two weeks but the truth is that Elizabeth and Edward are very easy customers. The three roomy cabins give the family plenty of space and privacy whilst there’s plenty to amuse above and below deck. “We’re lucky, the children get on really well,”

continues Kerry, “and are exceptionally good at amusing themselves. Often Paul and I will retire after a long day whilst Elizabeth and Edward are cosied up watching a DVD. We always have a good stash of movies to fill those quieter moments and there are plenty of games too. And of course, being 21st century children, they have a PSP and DS each. Paul and I are more than happy with the boat’s sophisticated sound system, a wallet full of cds and a library of good books.” Not that staying indoors is very commonplace on a yachting holiday in the company of some of the finest weather in the Mediterranean. Scuba equipment aside, the Weldon’s Princess also has canoes, waterskiing gear and a handy

tender for leading the water sports and nipping onshore to collect provisions or sample the menus of the many beach clubs sprinkled along the coastline. Boredom does not feature in the Weldon dictionary. What was the highlight of a fortnight afloat on the Balearic waters? “Too many fantastic memories to mention,” says Kerry, “but a stand-out moment would have to be when we were sailing back past Formentera, the sun gently setting over the horizon, and we realized that we were being accompanied by a gathering of dolphins swimming alongside. It just seemed like the perfect way to close a special holiday.”

Having spent a lot of his working life indoors, Simon relishes his life and work in Mallorca. He says himself that Vitesse Yachts is a great company to work for whilst he also gets to work with some superb boats. Simon and his family have never been happier, and in his words, he must be the luckiest guy around.

Jamie Brown, Cruising Instructor u Dedication and commitment to his career and personal goals are a driving force for Jamie. He likes to experience life to the fullest and encourages others to do likewise. Working in the yacht industry and following the marine way of life is a natural progression for Jamie as he has a strong background in waterbased sport. Although well-versed in the tides, currents and sandbanks of the waters around southern England, when Chris took ownership of his Menorquin Yacht 110, a 37ft traditionally-crafted typical Llaüt, he felt it was time for a masterclass in the ways of Balearic cruising. And, despite having RYA qualifications, he saw the advantage of securing the ICC (International Certificate of Competence) which is readily acknowledged throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. He called on Vitesse Yachts to guide him through the process. Chris outlines his experience, “Arguably the waters are more hazardous back in the UK but I had no prior experience of mooring stern-to and was unused to the deep, clear, open seas surrounding the Islands. A practical course such as the ICC was just what I needed to acclimatize to this new environment. I spent three days on my new boat in the company of Simon Egalton, an experienced and approachable instructor, who was quick to spot my weaknesses and tailor-make the course to suit. He also imparted some handy tips on mooring in the popular coves, tightly packed with yachts in the high season, using both the anchor and lines from stern to rocks.” Would Chris recommend Simon and Vitesse Yachts, “Absolutely. Although I could have just taken the keys to my Menorquin and cracked on I didn’t feel comfortable. I got a lot out of the ICC course, absorbed some invaluable local knowledge and now feel confident to take my family out for some funfilled days afloat.” n

Antifoul and Anode Replacement u For boats kept in the water year-round, antifoul and anode replacement are vital parts of a guardiennage service. Antifoul - key to preventing excess build-up of marine growth - is best done once a season and can involve a basic jet-wash and rubbing back in preparation for antifouling, or a ‘fresh start’ requiring complete removal and replacement of the original antifoul. Vitesse Yachts will advise you as to the best approach for your boat that season and can orchestrate both. Of equal importance is regular inspection and replacement of anodes. This is essential to prevent electrolytic corrosion to underwater equipment such as shafts and propellers.

Provisioning u Whether it’s just the basics or enough for a fortnight’s cruising, your food, drinks and household necessities can be obtained and stowed prior to your arrival.

Cleaning / Laundry u Boat cleaning can either form part of a guardiennage package or be specifically tailored to meet your needs. Our boat cleaning teams work with diligence and discretion remaining respectfully aware of your boat and possessions. n today’s litigious world, the protection and privacy of the discerning yacht owner and his personal assets is of paramount importance. Positioning a company to own and/or operate the yacht provides this security together with peace of mind that their assets are protected in the event of a claim. There are also a number of other additional benefits for owners including: u Anonymity for the yacht owner as shares are usually held in trust. Any investigation if the yacht owning company was identified would only show the nominee shareholders of the company, not the ultimate client. This anonymity is particularly pertinent in the current economic climate with many clients being business owners not wanting adverse publicity sometimes associated with the ownership of yachts. u Registering a yacht at a chosen jurisdiction is subject to the owner qualifying to register at a particular port in his own

name. For those individuals who do not qualify, the positioning of a company in a suitable jurisdiction can enable the preferred port of registration to be used. u Social Security regulations are due to come into force in May 2010 requiring EU employers to deduct both employers and employee social security contributions resulting in higher costs for owners and net salaries for crew. By using a company in a suitable non-EU jurisdiction to act as employer, this obligation can be removed.

u For legitimate commercial use of the yacht, the owning company may qualify for VAT registration based on third party charter intent. VAT registration can provide numerous benefits including zero rating the VAT on the yacht purchase and also on the acquisition of certain goods and supplies. u If shares in the company are held in joint names then the company can assist

with estate planning for the yacht owner as the shares, and therefore ultimate yacht ownership, will automatically pass by survivorship to the surviving joint shareholder. Corporate yacht ownership can provide benefits to a wide range of yacht owners not just owners of superyachts as is sometimes the pre-conception. The costs for forming and administering a company are also not as high as one may think, especially when you consider the benefits and peace of mind that it offers.

Chartering may have cropped up in discussion as a potential revenue stream but perhaps you never took the idea any further. After all, there’s a lot to consider, not least which charter company can be trusted to assume control of your prized possession. Vitesse Yachts’ rough guide to chartering u Revenue – What can you Expect? Historically, a full charter season in the sunny Mediterranean is around six to eight weeks. The majority of these weeks fall during June, July and August. Of course, there are no guarantees... some years may be more, others less. Price per day / week is dependent on the season, number of cabins, condition and equipment on your yacht.

1 Provisions

If you require provisions such as food, drink and household essentials, it’s best to arrange this well in advance. Vitesse Yachts will generally request payment for pre-booked provisions upon arrival.

It’s both common sense and advisable to have adequate insurance for health and personal possessions during your charter. It’s unlikely that your charter company will accept any liability for losses incurred whilst aboard their boats. Try to resist the temptation to take high value items onboard as boat security is inherently not the same as at home. Most charter companies will offer insurance cover against your security deposit.

Prior to receiving the keys to your floating hotel there will be some paperwork and a general handover to complete. Make sure you know where and when you are meeting, especially if it’s outside of normal office hours. Swap phone numbers so that if your arrival is delayed, you can keep Vitesse Yachts informed. Airport collections can be arranged to ensure smooth sailing from the start.

4 Security Deposit

Please remember that it is highly probable for the charter company to take a security deposit from you upon your arrival - yachts are expensive pieces of kit. If paying by credit card do make sure that you have adequate

With bareboat charter, the handover will take place once you have settled in onboard. Allow up to half a day for this procedure depending on the type of boat you have booked. Vitesse Yachts will note any damage and run through all onboard systems with you prior to departure. With skippered charter you will be given a full safety briefing and shown any systems that will be useful throughout your time afloat.

Each time you moor, make a note of your boat’s location. Marinas can be large, quays can appear very similar, and it may be a long walk or even a car journey to your boat. If you think you may need a car hire service, consult with Vitesse Yachts.

7 Berthing

The boat’s home port berth is usually free of charge during your stay, however if you venture to other marinas you will be responsible for all berthing costs and charges. You will also need to arrange for shore power and water connections. Marinas tend to use different connection systems for electricity and water so there’s an outside chance that

the connectors on your boat may not be compatible. Research in advance.

8 Heads (Toilets)

Toilet habits aren’t usually readily discussed but, if you’re not used to boats, you’ll need to know how to handle the onboard equivalent. Heads can be of the vacuum, macerator or hand pump variety but the golden rule in every case is - NO foreign objects down the pan. Boat heads are designed for human waste and toilet paper alone. Use paper sparingly, never in a large clump, and bear in mind that a blocked head is not the most pleasant experience. You can guarantee that the charter company will check all heads at u

hand back and may well charge for blockages. Finally, if your boat has a holding tank, this will usually need to be emptied at the end of charter - check with your charter company for their policy on the subject.

9 Noise

Boating is of course a social activity but it’s recommended that, whether at anchor or berthed in a marina, you try to keep noise to a respectable level a courtesy to your neighbours.

10 Luggage

Boats don’t have a lot of storage space for luggage. Consider bringing fabric cases or holdalls rather than the hard type.

11 Hand back

Vitesse Yachts will give the boat a thorough once-over during hand back and, providing everything is returned as day one, your security deposit will be fully refunded. An awareness of the charter company’s policy with regard to fuel will assist greatly in a swift hand back. Normal practice states that both the boat and the tender are returned with full fuel tanks. The charter company will probably take on re-fuelling on your behalf, but be prepared that they will charge not only for the fuel, but also for their time.n
