Healing innovates ogram partners to explore a deliberate program offering that would educate their company leaders about wellbeing practices and how leadership in this area can increase the capacity of an organization to innovate and sustain performance in an increasingly interconnected, complex and dynamic world. WELLBEING LEADERSHIP PROGRAM: WHOLE SYSTEMS APPROACH
“Wellbeing Leadership is a whole person, whole systems approach to developing leadership skills in the face of complexity and challenge,” believes Center Director Mary Jo Kreitzer. “Of course, wellbeing is often looked at individually, or personally, but it’s a powerful challenge to think of it organizationally. The companies that address the full ‘wellbeing’ of their organizations and prepare

Poel, who recently accepted a position at Lifetime Fitness as Senior Director, Kids Activities and Aquatics, is a Center Advisory Board member and Wellbeing Leadership faculty. Poel leveraged her own personal and

After years of working in strategic positions for Dayton Hudson Corporation and Marshall Fields, she found herself in crisis in 2005 when her company was acquired by Macy’s in an industry consolidation move. ISTORY IS a great teacher (sometimes). It is also said that, “history

is written by the victors.” This implies a certain bias. And today, powerful interests control mainstream information and education. (Thankfully, Essential
Wellness is independent media!) So, who are these “powerful interests” anyway? The visibly powerful include various captains of industry. Primarily

r parts? the financial, energy, manufacturing, agri-biz, chemical and medical industries. The healthcare industrial complex includes the insurance industry, medical
manufacturing and services, and the pharmaceutical industry. But make no mistake; all corporate “industry” has an impact on our health. MODERN MEDICINE VICTIM OF OWN SUCCESS
Wellness can be complicated. Each human being is a highly complex integration of innumerable biological systems and processes, as well as influencing environmental cofactors such as chemical toxicity and EMFs. It is ironic that mainstream medicine, considered by some to be reductionist, sterile, technological, and mechanistic and compartmentalized, is actually the consequence of many truly great advances in specialized knowledge by researchers. In a real sense, the modern medical paradigm is a victim of its own success. Medical overspecialization has resulted in a nonintegrated healthcare system that often seems dysfunc-
tional. Well meaning medical specialists simply do not have time to keep up with the explosion of information about the different specialists’ specialties. There is a disconnect, so critical information that may pertain to an individual patient might be unknown to the treating physician. It is understandable that our human intellect is attracted to the exciting, cool “new” (we are after all, only human). A new movie, new technology, new information, new medical therapy, new “magic-bullet” drug, and so on. Still, must it necessarily follow that we reject ancient wisdom to replace it with what is newest? Is it possible that some of the information given to us by the history-writers is misleading? After all, corporations do have a mandate to make a profit (our health may not be the priority).

USE DISCERNMENT WHEN CONSIDERING NEW THERAPIES
Human progress and scientific inquiry are very important. Because obviously, we can improve. However, implementation of any medical therapy should be tempered with discernment. Modern techno-medicine is so fragmented and incoherent that it can put the patient’s health at risk. Newest does not always mean best. History can provide us with some perspective here; the Science Museum of Minnesota has an informative exhibit titled “Questionable Medical Devices.” It is worth a visit: http:// www.smm.org/exhibitservices/ history/collections/gallery/9 What we call holistic, or “energy medicine,” has in fact been used for healing by most of humanity for many thousands of years. If the value of therapy was based solely on how long it has been around, and how long people have thought that it was helpful, then holistic medicine would be the most effective treatment known to humankind. Clearly, 18 www.esswellness.com
ancient healers were on to something. And, holistic medicine practitioners are still practicing today simply because the therapy is effective. Leading-edge hightech medical research is now exploring the realms of the ancients. Essentially all matter (including us) is comprised of atoms. Always in motion, atoms function dynamically with electrons, protons, and neutrons (quantum mechanics breaks it down even further). Also, the earth is a giant electro-magnet which influences our biology. Good holistic medicine practitioners consider the whole health picture and influencing environmental cofactors. CONSIDER THAT WELLNESS IS MORE THAN ABSENCE OF DEATH
Keep in mind that authentic health is a state of comprehensive wellness, not merely the absence of death. Fundamental wellness provides many tangible benefits, including a joyfulness at the cellular level. Do not be fooled, this is not rocket science; optimum health can be achieved
through simple health promoting behaviors. Although, sometimes therapy is necessary for an acute or chronic condition. Then only safe, well understood, proven therapies should be considered. Often, holistic healers are not officially sanctioned by the medical industrial complex. Do not be mislead, this does not mean holistic therapeutic protocols are ineffective or unsafe. This also does not mean all conventional medicine is safe, there may be conflicting interests involved (do your own research). Having trust in the healer is important in all healing. Learn for yourself who you can trust. You must protect your own health by making sure any therapy or medical tests you agree to be safe. Although this can be challenging, you have much to gain (or lose). Investing time and energy in your health is far less costly than paying for illness. From a holistic perspective, the immeasurable self-healing capacity of human biology surpasses a techno-medical compartmentalized approach. Quantum science proves you are more
than your parts, much more. To ensure a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and our planet—wellness is essential. Be well. Julie Casper, C. Ac. (WI), L. Ac. F YOU’VE been hastened by spirit’s call to provide holistic healthcare as your life’s work, you may have grappled with the concern, “can I make money doing this?” All too often people spend good money on an education in holistic healing and end up having to supplement their income with other work. What’s worse, never having a practice at all for lack of clients?
WHAT IMPEDES A FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE?
Healers aren’t business moguls. One of the biggest mistakes made in the healing industry is that practitioners lose sight of the fact that their practice is, indeed, a business. While healing is often very instinctual for those lead to this career path, business-mind34 www.esswellness.com
edness is not usually so innate. Practitioners need to be taught these principles just as they were taught the principles of bioenergy healing science. HEALERS DON’T START PROMOTING THEMSELVES EARLY ENOUGH
Most students wait for their diploma before they start to announce their presence to the community. Big mistake. The curriculum at the school ought to be teaching and instilling marketing and promotion of the student from the beginning of the program. HEALERS DON’T UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF CREATING A NICHE

Bioenergy healing programs offer all sorts of courses on how to run energy, enhance intuition, even spiritual development. But few to none offer courses in business development.
