Medical Intuition: A Visionary Path to Wellness By Wendie Colter, MCWC, CMIP

W

When I tell people I teach medical intuition to healthcare professionals at some of the top integrative health and education centers in the country, their reaction is often: “How can you teach that? Aren’t you just born with it?” Intuition is a natural human trait. Whether we realize it or not, everyone uses their intuition. People will say that they “had a hunch,” or a “gut feeling,” or that they “just knew” which choice to make before they made it. We may also feel empathy when “picking up” the emotional energy of others. The idea of using intuition in healthcare is not such an odd topic to clinicians. Healthcare providers routinely count on their intuition to let them know when something seems “off.” Practitioners understand that intuitive hunches may lead them to information that could have been missed otherwise. In addition, there is a large amount of scientific 4 www.esswellness.com

research on the phenomenon of intuition in healthcare. Published in respected medical journals, this research acknowledges the use of intuition as a key factor in the successful care of patients and clients. WHAT IS MEDICAL INTUITION? Medical intuition is not a treatment, intervention or healing modality. Although it uses the word “medical,” it is not to be considered the practice of medicine, or any other licensed healthcare practice. It is not meant to be used as a substitute for licensed medical care or advice. A qualified medical intuitive should always refer a client to their primary care provider for their health care. So, what is it? Medical intuition is a foundational whole-person energetic assessment skill for mind-body-spirit wellbeing. It is designed to support all healthcare methods, from allopathic to integrative, to complementary and alternative. Medical intuitives use various methods of intuitive scanning (also known as “reading”) intended to gather information from both the physical systems and the

energetic systems of the body. Our energetic systems, also referred to as the biofield, include the chakra system and the auric field.

impact our health and wellness. This process is intended to help promote physical wellness, as well as emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.

Medical intuition is designed to assess energetic patterns in the physical body and biofield that may correspond to the underlying causes of illness, imbalance, and disease. Medical intuition can also assist in addressing the energetic influence of thoughts, beliefs, and emotions, and how they may

In this way, medical intuition supports the principles of mind-body medicine, which is based on the intrinsic connections between our bodies, minds and spirits, and how these connections can play a strong role in the state of our health (The Random House Dictionary, 2017). BEGINNINGS Many children show an early interest in art, sports or math. From a young age, I was naturally drawn to intuitive perception. One of my earliest recollections of intuitive skill was when I was about six years old. While humming a popular song to myself, I asked my mother to turn on the radio, as I just “knew” there was a song I liked that was playing. When she CONTINUED PAGE 6...

turned the radio on, the song poured out of the radio at exactly the place where I had been singing it to myself. Similar experiences happened over and over again, and I thought nothing of it. I assumed everyone else could do this, too. Later in life, after reading Deepak Chopra’s seminal book, Quantum Healing, I healed myself of a small tumor using mind-body visualization techniques. This powerful result kick-started a life-long study into the relationship between the mind and the body, and how our thoughts, emotions and energetic “vibration” can affect our health. I studied many different energy-based modalities and skills over the years. In my professional energy healing practice, I found I was able to “see” into both the physical body and the biofield in great detail. I also noticed that I could discern the origins of an imbalance by intuitively “viewing” a client’s life experience, with detailed and relevant information. I began to shift my work away from energy healing to build on my medical intuitive assessment practice, as I found that this held the foundations for addressing the root causes of clients’ imbalances. The feedback I consistently received was that the intuitive assessment provided my clients with a unique opportunity to gain a deeper and more positive awareness to support their health and wellbeing.

RESEARCH AND RESULTS Although there is a good deal of research on intuition in healthcare, unfortunately there is not very much research specifically focused on medical intuition. In 2019, I completed an exploratory study to gauge the accuracy of the skill, with the support of Dr. Paul J. Mills at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. The study included five of my certified graduates and 67 volunteer participants. The sessions were blinded, as there was no access to the participants’ medical records or backgrounds. Additionally, the medical intuitives kept their eyes closed throughout the session. Afterwards, the participants filled out an anonymous survey. The participants rated the medical intuitives as 94 percent accurate in evaluating their main physical issues, and 98 percent accurate in intuiting events from their lives that related to their health issues. About half of the participants had received a diagnosis from their doctor for their health issue. It was exciting to see that they rated the medical intuitives’ evaluations as 94 percent consistent with their known diagnoses. (To be clear, the medical intuitives did not diagnose, but described the intuited information only.) These groundbreaking results were published in the peerreviewed Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and represents the first published research on medical intuition in 20 years. I wrote my book, Essentials of Medical Intuition: A Visionary Path to Wellness (Watkins/Penguin-Random

House, 2022), to highlight the colorful history, diversity of uses, and remarkable effectiveness of this distinctive skill. The book includes many case studies from medical intuitive practitioners, compelling patient and client experiences, and interviews with medical professionals and researchers who understand the need for a new, paradigm-shifting integrative approach to healthcare from the whole-person perspective.

Kabbalah of Light An except by Catherine Shainberg

T

The conscious mind is naturally antagonistic to the unconscious. It prides itself on its precise observation and objectivity. It likes to separate, analyze, categorize. It uses its powerful logical thrust to establish

solid, and he may say that also being pure energy, it is both a solid and not a solid at all. The sea is blue, but the ancient Greeks saw it wine red. Blue was not a “fact” in the time of Homer. The world was geocentric until Copernicus proved otherwise. A scientist will describe the rose as having a stem, thorns, leaves, petals, pistils,

scientific proof of things that it calls “facts.” This chair, this table, the sea are facts of the reality we live in. Facts depend on hypotheses, such as the types of questions we ask ourselves, and the points of view from which we perceive and examine them. Our dearly held certainties may shift and change when new questions and new hypotheses emerge. Ask Albert Einstein if the table is really

coloring and scent, which are different aspects of a totality of experience, which only the unconscious gives access to. The unconscious has no hypotheses, it is a cauldron of swirling experiences. Tap into it, and up pops a dream image. The unconscious deals only in revelation, and revelation, being an experience, is, by definition, true. If I turn a corner and am suddenly faced with a blazing

sunset over the ocean, my heart moves not to the “fact” of the sunset, but to the wondrous experience. The conscious mind deals in facts, the unconscious deals in truth. To get to the truth of what you really want, you’re going to have to tap into the unconscious. The unconscious runs the show, and this is a “fact” verified by many tests conducted by experimental psychologists and researchers. Some researchers go so far as to say that the unconscious runs 95 percent of our body functions. It is a “fact” that our carefully analyzed and agonized choices are mostly decided by the unconscious. Our creative innovations rise up, fully formed from the unconscious, and yet most of us have no clue how to access this great power. Unlike the conscious mind, the unconscious cannot be worked out, analyzed, or pinned down, it can only be received. It will come in whatever form it chooses. Kabbalah, which means receiving, is the science of letting the unconscious speak.

To learn who you are, to discover your hidden motivations, and to speak to your body and cells, you will have to leave behind what you perceive as the safe shores of the conscious mind. Can you trust the unconscious? There lies the rub. Most of us don’t see its value because we confuse our visions with fantasy. But fantasy is the contrary of “true imagination” as William Blake liked to call it. Fantasy is a product of your conscious mind seizing upon your brain’s capacity to make images, and twisting them to suit its purpose. Suppose you desperately want to believe this very handsome man (or woman) who is married to your best friend is really interested in you. You fantasize about the person overcoming many obstacles to come to you, including getting rid of their partner. You visualize the person finally embracing you, and now both of you are riding off into the sunset. This has nothing to do with the truth. Unfortunately,

many of the visualizations taught today trade in fantasy. You are told what to see. While that may be entertaining, it is not transformative. The unconscious is the source of all creativity. How to tap into your creativity, dialogue with your images, and trigger transformation is the subject of this book. There is a methodology to it that is as precise as anything science pertains to be. The Celts’ image for this work is a naked blade lifted above dark waters by a mysterious woman called the Lady of the Lake. The waters, you may have guessed, are the waters of the unconscious. The sword illustrates the jolting, the sometimes cutting truths of the images that pop up at the surface of the unconscious. If you wish to return to the Garden of Eden you must face the revolving sword of the angel guarding its gates. Don’t worry, you will not be cut by the sword or, as the Greeks saw it, turned to stone by your Medusa truths. Like the hero Perseus you will learn to disarm and, more saliently, to transform those aspects of yourself that you don’t like. But the Celts’ powerful image of a sword above waters speaks to the cutting edge of truth that the unconscious wields against you. What better way

10 www.esswellness.com

than to tackle your images head-on, and responding to their necessity to ignite the creative shift! You will become the warrior, hero, gallant knight or lady of your life story. Emotions are mysterious and powerful An excerpt from her book: Breast Health Is in Your Hands, Tips for Breast Vitality and Sensuality By Joyce Sobotta

E

Every emotion gives you a different message. This is how we learn and rise to a higher consciousness. When we are emotionally stressed, it is a good idea to cool down, take a deep breath, leave the room, count to 10, or do whatever we need to do to remain calm and in the moment. We can ask ourselves, what is the worst that can happen in this situation? How likely is it that the worst thing will happen? Could the situation correct itself if I give it time and patience or gratitude and forgiveness? Dealing with our emotions starts with awareness. Becoming aware is simply listening to our inner self.

Sometimes emotions make one feel out of control, and it is easy to ignore them, or focus instead on the physical pain. When a person takes time to learn the meaning of the emotion with awareness and understanding, he gains power over it, and it is easier to deal with it. Be quiet for a few minutes and study the emotion. Ask yourself, what am I feeling? What caused it? Has it happened before? When was the last time? Does it happen frequently? Is there a message I get to learn from this emotion? What could I do differently? Changing an emotional pattern or vibe requires understanding of the issue and how it affects our life as well as understanding why we are experiencing the problem, and what we could experience instead. STEPS TO DEAL WITH EMOTIONS Name the emotion you are feeling. There is a difference between what you feel and what you think you feel. For instance, being rejected is an opinion and broken-hearted is the feeling you need to name. Being overworked is an opinion and frustrated is the emotion or feeling that you get to learn from. Neglected is an opinion, whereas lonely is the feeling. Own the emotion. It is important to acknowledge the emotion as your own. It is what it is. No one can make you mad or sad; you can only do that to yourself! Another person may pull the trigger to your emotions, but it doesn’t do you any good to blame anyone else for your feelings. Identify where in the body you feel the emotion. Once you figure out where in the body the emotion is, it will be easier to understand why you feel the way you do. Many emotions are perceived to be in the chest area, which includes the heart, lungs, breasts, throat, and shoulders. When you examine it more thoroughly, express it fully, relate, and respond to the situation in a healthy adaptive way, it becomes easier to understand and let it go. That is why the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is so effective. EFT is an amazing therapy tool that does NOT require the practitioner to be a therapist. EFT consists of two parts—the physical part, which involves the tapping, and the verbal part, which involves the

12 www.esswellness.com

talking. The physical part can be learned easily and can be self-applied for quick fixes. The verbal part involves investigating to find out what words fit the emotion. This will produce the permanent desired outcome. It is performed by tapping on the meridian points on the body to stimulate and then release. The process is easy to memorize and is convenient, so it can be done anywhere. Our physical pains and diseases are so obviously connected with our unresolved negative emotions. That is the main reason EFT works so well. It has been proven successful in thousands of clinical cases, and it applies to almost every problem. All our emotions have something to tell us. Deal with one emotion at a time, recognizing there may be other feelings that need to be released. No emotions are bad, not even the unpleasant ones. Any emotion can be considered good if we experience it fully and act on the message we get. Take time to be alone and happy with your own company. Learn to be independent of others. Give yourself permission to do what you set your mind to do. If you can create it in your thoughts, you can create it in your actions and accomplishments. Let go of limited thinking that there is only one way to accomplish a task. There is always more than one way! Take what you already know and move forward with it. Listen and take any clues that suggest another way. Forgive yourself of all the things you thought you did wrong. Be honest and express your feelings fully or journal what you feel. This reduces stress and has

proven to be effective in boosting the immune system. Our heart, as well as our breast health, is in our hands … literally. In a recent study, women who can express their emotions live longer and have a better quality of life. Feel secure and confident in who you are. Expect to be respected for your opinions and decisions, but also empathize and understand the reason for the beliefs of others. Listen to their suggestions, while having the courage to stand firm in your own beliefs. Love yourself first with healthy lifestyle habits. Dance like no one is watching. Are you self-conscious about what others think about you? Don’t you think maybe they have enough of their own stuff to deal with? I hope you dance, laugh, and sing. Gift yourself to a new way of health and wellness. Never limit your challenges, instead challenge your limits. Trust yourself and have an unyielding faith in what you do or have already accomplished. Listen to your heart. Prioritize alone time, organize tasks, say no to others, meditate, do breath work, practice movement, religion, or spirituality. Do whatever it takes for your best health. As we work with our emotions, our best guides are our intuition and our heart. We get to go to a place of stillness, a sacred place where we connect with our higher self. With a clear intention we can feel the energy or hear the message. We can be confident we understand mysterious and powerful emotions, trust our intuition, and accept the lessons we are given.
