ness of knowing that only the Spirit can express. I gazed off at the sacred Black Hills in the distance. While my feet had not touched the parched and cracked soil beneath them in this lifetime, my soul remembered a time when this was home.
Now only a remnant of “what once
was” remained. Flashes of a time when this place was teaming with life more diverse than the rain-forests of South America filled my mind’s eye: A time when prairies reigned—riotous with color that defied the constraints of an artist’s palette; A time when bison provided sustenance to those who shared this space under the Heavens.; A time when eagles soared to the Great Spirit and glided gently to the Earth in a beautiful dance of life.
I hiked up those hills with a sense
of wonder and awe, feeling that the fairies had fluttered ahead of me, leaving in their wake a sprinkling of fairy dust along the path my feet now trod. The beautiful mica flakes reflected the sunlight streaming through the trees.
I allowed myself to be lead off

you. If you can keep some sort of awareness, intention, or spiritual goal for your trip, then your external travel becomes an internal journey as well.
My starting point as a healer was a
trip to Belize in 2000. Traveling to the Maya Mountains was in many ways a declaration of my intention to become a healer. And while the sacred sites we visited, and the local Curanderos (shamans) I was introduced to were stimulating in their own right, my intention to open into a future possibility for myself gave depth and meaning to each encounter.
Travel mirrors personal evolution,
because by exposing ourselves to new people and places, and by jolting us out of the familiar, we are removed from our comfortable shell and given an opportunity to explore new ways of being and new possibilities for ourselves. When we combine travel to sacred places with the conscious intention to know more of ourselves, then

JOURNEY TO THE SACRED
BY FINBARR ROSS
Pilgrims vs. tourists: Which are you?
I
N TODAY’S busy world we may ask ourselves: Why am I here and what is my purpose? How do I find that inner peace which seems to elude me? Why am I drawing all these challenges into my life? What do I do to allow myself the space to let answers to these questions unfold in my life? We are experiencing a time of great shifts within each of us, calling us to look at the gentle love that surrounds and nurtures us as we work to bring balance to our lives. Our pathway on earth has been an expression of our desire to fulfill the vision of our soul purpose to a point where we are resonating with the creative powers of expression. We are being asked to honor our personal truth with our life choices. It is a time to listen to our inner urgings and the strength of our intuitive voice. We are being urged to look at the new opportunities in this world of transition, transparency, balance, and awakening that are now presenting themselves with an increased awareness of light and commitment. To be aware of the fullness of love and wisdom that we can now share, without limitation, emanating from our soul and bringing with it the light of infinite power and clarity, a living expression of our connection which can be drawn on at any time. Sacred site tours offer you the opportunity to go on a journey of self discovery, to experience an awakening as you journey, to experience for yourself the mystery of sacred sites and their connection to healing, transformation, and spirituality. You
20 www.esswellness.com
learn to feel their energies as you explore lands rich in legend, myth, folklore, and beautiful gardens. As you journey through fertile lands and magnificent countryside, you will be transported back to a time when nature, song, and dance provided food for the soul—blending your spiritual and physical needs as you experience first hand the beauty and mysticism of ancient wisdom as you explore the vibrational matrix of sacred power sites. Sacred journeys allow you to travel as a pilgrim. They give you the opportunity to reawaken and revitalize, to explore and delight in the shared experiences of traveling with old and new friends. Many people are now turning to ancient spiritual traditions for direction and inspiration. This legacy can help you create balance in your life and harmony in your soul.
Are you a pilgrim or a tourist? We are told we should be pilgrims in life, but instead we have become tourists. • Pilgrims are on a special journey. Every part of it has meaning—the set-
backs, the frustrations, as well as the joys. Tourists are out to enjoy life, to seek pleasure, fun, or just rest. • Pilgrims carry little with them, just enough for their needs. Tourists are burdened with possessions and are always anxious about losing them. • Pilgrims stay as long as they need to be in a place. Tourists have schedules to keep and are always rushing on. • Pilgrims are humble, open to people and experiences. Tourists are arrogant, they know what they want, and they’ll see it, do it, find it. • Pilgrims share what they have. Tourists never have quite enough. • Pilgrims are changed by their journey. Tourists are always a little bit disappointed; it is never quite as good as they had hoped. Lord, help us to be pilgrims in life, not just tourists. —Isabelle Kingston Finbarr Ross was born in County Cork, Ireland and is the founder of Celtic Mystical Journeys. Finbarr moved to the United States in 1983 and, after a successful career in both Europe and the United States, he began a spiritual quest that led to his attendance and subsequent graduation from Sancta Sophia Seminary. Finbarr is a facilitator of self discovery, spiritual wisdom, and divine feminine emotional healing. Finbarr created Celtic Mystical Journeys as a vehicle to facilitate personal and group travel to the sacred power sites of Ireland, England, Scotland, and France. He describes these journeys as pathways of self-discovery. www. celticmysticaljourneys.com or 877-756-8763.
