A short roundup of what’s been going on
GREEN AT LAST
For many of us living a greener life is something we aspire to. We know that our planet is in danger. We know that something must be done and it must be done soon or our grandchildren will face potentially catastrophic consequences. Our intentions to live greener are often thwarted by the demands of our day; the school run, getting to work on time and the weekly supermarket trip all usually require motorisation. The suck, squeeze, bang and blow of the four-stroke engine are mighty convenient. This convenience we deem as essential rather than a privilege and our green aspirations are valet-parked whilst we dash around the planet as efficiently as possible. Perhaps we all need to consider something that would offset a little of the impact we make individually on the environment and that we could all sign up to

now – a green burial. This ecologically sound alternative to conventional burial and cremation has become increasingly popular and not only to eco-warriors but to anyone who appreciates the outstanding natural beauty of English Woodland. GreenAcres Woodland Burials - Epping was established seven years ago and offers Green Burials, Ash Interments and Scatterings in the peace and beauty of a totally natural environment. The outstanding service of the GreenAcres team and purpose built buildings aside, how comforting to know that by choosing a green burial and becoming part of the cycle of life’s natural renewal, your passing would not be final, in some small way, you would continue to be. SLIMMING SENSATION BRINGS SLIMMING WORLD TO EPPING On Thursday 4th June, local slimming sensation Kelly Harris will be relaunching the Slimming World group in Epping at Quakers Meeting Hall, Hemnall Street at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Kelly reached her own target last summer with the help of her warm and friendly group. “It’s a great evening out, no one is judged or humiliated and members can choose their own target weight. On this plan, you can still eat all your favourite foods such as a roast or barbeque with a glass of wine or two and never go hungry. There are many recipes and food choices which are family friendly
and quick and easy to prepare for our busy lives. I want to reassure anyone who is anxious about walking through our doors for the first time; you have already taken the bravest step. “With obesity on the rise, Slimming World wants to reach out to people who need our support. This healthy, balanced diet means it’s suitable for everyone including pregnant and breast feeding ladies (with your midwife’s consent), men, diabetics and 11-15 year olds (accompanied by a parent or guardian)”. For further information, please contact Kelly on 07817 223042 or Facebook: Slimming World Epping.
BLOSSOMS ACADEMY OPENING DAY
On Saturday 25th April Blossoms Academy in Forest Gate held an open day to showcase the new nursery to the community with the support of Dan Osborne, star of ‘The Only Way Is Essex’. Dan attended the event and performed the ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the nursery. Local families also attended the day to tour the excellent new facilities with the children taking part in various activities. The Ofsted registered nursery includes a large garden area as well as fun and inviting playrooms where children can play and learn in a caring environment. Blossoms Academy is co-owned by Bobbi Chana and Johanne Emmanuel, who already own the very popular Blossoms Nursery in Epping, which will be celebrating its 4th birthday later this year. Bobbi said, “We were very
excited for the opening of Blossoms Academy and even Dan Osborne joined us to cut the ribbon! “We are opening up opportunities for all and look forward to building a new family with our staff, children and parents alike.” Blossoms Academy is now open and they currently have spaces for children aged 2 to 5 years old. Located on Sebert Road, Forest Gate it is easily accessible from Stratford, Wanstead and surrounding areas and is open from 7.30am to 6.30pm. If you would like to book a tour please call the Epping branch on 01279 429 937 or email info@ blossomsnurseryltd.com. Blossoms team and

LOCAL NEWS STUDENTS ‘STAND & DELIVER’
A dozen students from Loughton’s Epping Forest College, took to the stage for their first public performances last month. The boys and girls aged between 16 and 19 formed 2 bands and 2 acoustic acts to play at ‘Stand & Deliver’, Loughton’s acoustic ‘open mic’ club which is based at The Royal British Legion club in Church Hill. Club organiser Roy Tyzack told us, “I was approached by teaching staff from the college who explained that the students needed to perform in public as part of their course work and we were the perfect choice of venue.” He added “They had an audience of around 50 people to perform in front of and they did a great job”. The two bands were named ‘Confetti’ Confetti and ‘100’ and the two acoustic acts were ‘The Dolls’ and ‘Down, Not Out’ and each got a great reception from the enthusiastic audience. Music tutor Marc Oliver from Epping Forest College said “The students are all part of the level 2 music cohort. This venue was perfect and they all very much enjoyed the experience of live performance in front of an audience which included some of their parents.” The evening also featured Loughton musician and former Davenant pupil Matthew Shepherd who’s professionally produced album ‘Top Of The Tree’ will be released on June 27th following a launch party at the Loughton Club in Station Road. Mr Tyzack said, “I am already working on the line up for Tuesday June 9th and we are going to have some great acts” he added “Doors open at 7.30pm Matthew and it’s £3 to get in”. The club has a licensed bar and food is available.

CHIGWELL SCHOOL’S DIRECTOR OF MUSIC SET FOR CHARITY BIKE CHALLENGE
The Director of Music at Chigwell School will be taking to his bicycle to raise money for the Lifebox Charity. Howard Ebden said: “Every year 2,000 to 3,000 old minis drive from Crystal Palace to Brighton along the old A23. It is a great fun spectacle with many camping the night before in Crystal Palace and ending on the promenade at Brighton with a lot of Howard Ebden activities and food stalls. “I am going to be chasing the environmentminis on bicycle from London to appropriate equipment and Brighton!” education to hospitals around the His latest fundraising venture world where surgery takes place follows the successful fundraising without essential monitoring and efforts of the school’s Chapel Choir safety checks. which has raised £45,000, some Mr Ebden added: “Any money I £4,500 of which has gone to the raise will be making an immediate Lifebox charity which distributes difference to the safety of surgical

CHILDREN RAISE MONEY FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
LOCAL STUDENTS PRESENT WORK AT BFI SOUTHBANK Students from Seven Kings High School, Woodbridge High School and Redbridge College presented their work at BFI Southbank on 8th May as part of a celebration of youth media produced as part of Adobe Youth Voices. From Seven Kings High School Labib Hassian and Oludamola Ayeni introduced the work produced over the past year by the Year 12 students. From Woodbridge High School Laura Darker and Freddie Lee introduced the work produced over the past year by the Year 8 students aged 13. Lauren Hodge, Hasnat Raza, Liam Phelan, Hunnana Tariq and Nazlin Herbert introduced the work produced over the past year by the Music Students and Media Students aged 16 - 18. The students have participated in a global programme empowering young people to voice their opinions on global issues. This year students’ media has tackled a wide range of subjects including climate change, cyber-bullying and ethical fashion. Adobe Youth Voices is delivered by Eastside Educational Trust in the UK and the AYV Co-ordinator explains more:
Avon House School, Woodford Green, is raising money to help the people of Nepal following the two recent earthquakes. The school had planned to raise £500 at its fundraising day on May 13th but managed to raise £700 with a non-uniform day and a bucket collection. The money will help many families who have lost their homes and suffered in the earthquakes. Just £35 will buy a tent, food, clothes and toothbrushes for a family of four.
“AYV is powerful because we are able to support teachers and educators to develop their skills by working with industry professionals and harness this to young people’s desire to make their voices heard. AYV Live! at the BFI Southbank is a wonderful showcase of young people’s burgeoning creative confidence. Making media in a meaningful way and having your work reach an audience is not always easy but we’re so impressed with the work showcased at AYV Live! which shows energy, enthusiasm and spirit.” After the event Nazlin Herbert commented “I really enjoyed taking part in Adobe Youth Voices and it was an amazing opportunity to present my work as well as perform to such a big audience! Seeing it shown on the screen at the BFI has made me want to make more films and music videos, and also to get them shown.” Participants in Adobe Youth Voices are also able to apply for a Creative Scholarship which offers support to recipients for tuition Nazlin Herbert fees for up to four years.

FOLLOW LIKE SHARE CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED Essex Police officers and staff have been out and about across the county talking to shoppers about our #FollowLikeShare campaign. We’ve had some great feedback and want to continue spreading the word.
E
very day we use our Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and You Tube channels to tell you about the work our officers are doing in your community to solve and reduce crime. We also ask for your help to be the eyes and ears of our county and keep a look out for vulnerable missing people, pass on information about crimes you may have witnessed, help us identify suspected criminals caught on camera and tell us about the whereabouts of wanted people. Facebook.com/ EssexPoliceUK Our Facebook page regularly reaches in excess of one million people and we directly engage with more than 100,000 people each week. Facebook is a particularly useful tool
to help find missing people - For instance, our Facebook followers helped find a vulnerable elderly man who had gone missing from his home in the Tendring area. A trio of local residents who had seen our appeal felt they had to help officers and began searching. They found the man, confused and cold, having fallen into a ditch. He was taken to hospital and later reunited with his family. Twitter.com/EssexPoliceUK Since we launched our Twitter channel in 2010 we’ve tweeted more than 10,000 times. Now, five years on, more than 70 of our officers and staff from Neighbourhood Policing Teams, specialist units across the county and Chief Constable are communicating directly with the
public on their own channels. YouTube.com/EssexPoliceUK Our YouTube channel has hundreds of videos which have been viewed over three million times since it was launched in 2010. The videos range from crime prevention tips to direct appeals to help solve crime. Instagram.com/EssexPoliceUK Instagram launched this year, showing life behind the scenes and giving a unique insight into day-today policing in Essex. Follow us on Instagram for our latest news and information along with behind the scenes photos of what we do. WAYS TO MAKE YOUR BLOW DRY LAST So... you’ve just had your weekly in salon blow dry, only for it to last a day or 2 and you’re in desperate need for the next available hair appointment...
N
ot this time! Bobbie, Manager of Finesse Hair & Beauty in Chingford has the tips and tricks to keep your smooth locks in place for longer. All the below products are available at Finesse.
1
Regular treatments and trims Having regular treatments and trims help keep your hair at its healthiest and therefore keeps split ends away. Your blow dry will last longer if your hair is healthy and smooth.
2
Invest in a dry shampoo The quickest and cheapest way to give your hair an extra bit of volume and get an extra day out of your blow dry.
3
Lisap ultimate plus A straightening fluid enriched with keratin and Ceramide A2. It reduces frizz and protects the hair from humidity, and as a bonus, it gives extreme heat protection when straightening with irons.
4
Keratin blow out For those who need something more semi permanent, you could opt for a Keratin blow out. This will help by smoothing out 95% of frizz and kinks. This will help make your regular blow dry last longer and you will find that your hair takes much less time to blow dry. It will last in your hair for 6 to 8 weeks.
Hair turbie towel
5
Protect your hair against humidity If you think only using a plastic cap is going to protect against shower frizz, think again as this can actually cause humidity. As well as a shower cap try wrapping a towel around your head to keep the moisture out. These easy wrap towels from Matalan do the trick for just £5. ypically sessions are extremely varied, incorporating, team work and task orientated games, body weight training, Calisthenics, HIIT, kettle bell work outs, strength and power based sessions, sprint training and much more. Our instructors are highly trained with a mix of different approaches and backgrounds to training, this insures that sessions stay challenging and fresh every time. TREND ON
Fishpools’ interior designer Katie Watson rounds up some of this summer’s hottest trends for your home and garden
BLUE
Shades of blue have become synonymous with summer style and there are heaps of great ways to incorporate them into your home. The classic combination of blue and white is timeless and can be used to create a fresh look with a touch of Riviera-style glamour. For a bolder statement, azure shades work brilliantly when paired with primary colours such as yellow or red and will provide any interior scheme with a stylish update that’s bright and playful. A large piece of furniture like a display cabinet or sideboard in a blue shade is perfect for creating a focal-point. It’s best to restrict your palette to no more than three colours, as this helps to ensure a space is well-balanced and avoids a room feeling overpowered by these colour groupings. Introducing blue in smaller accents through decorative homewares such as plates, bowls and mugs will work equally well. Fishpools’ new Royal Doulton Pacific collection has a gorgeous summer vibe and its mix of geometric and painterly patterns will give your home a fresh, Mediterranean look.

BOTANICAL GREENS
From soft sage to rich forest green, botanical shades are everywhere this season and can be used to create a number of fresh looks that’ll lift the look of your home. Leafy prints are a great place to start and will immediately add a sense of adventure to any décor scheme. Mixing and matching a variety of patterns and textures will ensure your space is tactile and visually interesting, while plants with plenty of foliage will introduce a horticultural touch. Wallpaper is a quick and easy way to make an impact and can be used as extensively as you wish. Fishpools has a stunning array of wallpapers from top brands such as Sanderson, Harlequin and Designers Guild, all of which offer many a botanical pattern to set your theme. If you love a Scandinavian vibe for your home, a white back drop will temper rich green hues perfectly whilst providing enough of a contrast to make an impact. Alternatively, a darker shade of paint or wallpaper design supplemented with a few gold accents can be used for a more formal setting.

GROWN UP PASTELS
While pastel shades are often our ‘go to’ look for spring and summer, there’s a new palette on the scene that’s captured our attention. Featuring a range of darker, earthy shades this grown up colour collection offers a sophisticated take on the pastel look that’s cooler than ever before. Closely linked to the trend for all things natural, these shades can be paired beautifully with rustic or textured finishes in the form of wood and stone. For those looking for something a little bolder try introducing a metallic accent such as copper or brass. This will lift the colours without making them look too gaudy. Replacing your chairs is one of the easiest ways to refresh your scheme with pastel hues. Swap tired designs for on trend styles like Fishpools’ Lexington Button Back Dining Chair, making sure to mix different materials and textures to create a covetable contrast at the table. Comfort is also key, so opt for a shape that provides just as much support as it does panache.
TROPICAL GARDENS
This season’s tropical trend has also found its way into our gardens, with bold and bright accessories leading the way. From jewel-hued cushions to colour pop parasols, these fun additions are a great way to add character and style to alfresco spaces. They can also be mixed and matched with ease. When it comes to choosing a colour palette, with an out-door space you can afford to be brave so don’t be afraid to introduce rich shades. They’ll immediately establish a tropical feel and will be complemented by a garden’s flowers and foliage. Try to limit your tropical theme to one or two ‘key’ colours; this will help to create consistency and tie your look together. Smaller splashes of accent colours can then be built up around them to add variation. In addition to accessories, painted or tiled outdoor walls are also a fabulous way to inject a touch of tropical that will last all year round. Planters filled with jungle-style flowers can also be used to break up large spaces and create an eye-catching display. Tel: 01992 63 64 65, www.fishpools.co.uk

The hummingbird hawkmoth has greyish-brown forewings, bright orange hindwings and a greyish body with a broad, black and white ‘tail’. Its flight is a distinguishing feature: it can be seen hovering over flowers, feeding with its long proboscis. It flutters its wings so quickly that it can appear orange as it flashes its hindwings and makes an audible hum.

A country rich in culture, beauty, history and heritage, Cambodia truly enchants.

ituated between Laos and Vietnam, bordered by Thailand and framed by the Mekong River - it is a fusion of Asia’s most fascinating regions. The country’s historical past is present everywhere, with the vast beauty of Angkor’s temples, Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace and the humbling Killing Fields. For those who want to explore the bustling cities, Siem Reap and the capital, Phnom Penh both offer a sensory experience of sights, sounds and scenery to be discovered; and sun worshippers will

be more than comfortable at any of the beautiful beach resorts found to the south of this amazing country. Evidence of French colonialism can be seen in Phnom Penh, where broad tree-lined boulevards and colonial architecture skirt the colourful markets, bustling riverfront and roadsides teeming with food vendors and cafes. The Khmer Empire’s legacy is the highlight of any visit, most notably the incredible temple complex of Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Superbly preserved, the centrepiece Angkor Wat was built to replicate the heavens on Earth and is the world’s largest religious monument. Gateway to the temples is the former backwater town of Siem Reap, a lively city with sophisticated restaurants, bars and shops. Nearby is a string of floating villages and stilted houses on Tonlé Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Join a cruise and glimpse fishermen at work, children playing by the shore and the wide variety of colourful birds, wildlife and plants that inhabit the mangroves. Then comes Battambang, Cambodia’s second largest city, which has remained relatively undeveloped. Known for its striking colonial architecture and contemporary arts scene, it’s also the departure point of the Bamboo “Train”. Set up by villagers to transport themselves and their goods, join this very basic vehicle for a highly recommended short journey through beautiful

landscapes and rice paddies to a local village. What better way to conclude an exhilarating tour of cultural delights than with time to unwind on the southern shores? Anyone looking for a truly private, tranquil beach experience can find it on the pristine white sands of Song Saa; a private island located just 30 minutes away by speedboat from Sihanoukville. The 5* Song Saa private island sits within the untouched archipelago of Koh Rong, spanning the islands of Koh Ouen and Koh Bong. This premium all-inclusive resort is connected by a footbridge running over a marine reserve to preserve the reef below. Guests can relax in their own beautiful villa (complete with private

Alternatively, the 5* boutique Knai Bang Chatt can be found secluded within the beach resort of Kep, just a 10 minute stroll from the small fishing village. Kep was once the beach destination of choice for Cambodian high-society, French Colonials and the country’s former King; and with beautiful surroundings framing this tranquil, relaxing region, it’s not hard to see why. Guests can enjoy spa treatments, yoga and meditation, take a dip in the saltwater infinity pool, join in with the sailing club or unwind in the library at Knai Bang Chatt - relaxation is key to an indulgent stay at this wonderful lifestyle resort. The lively resort of Sihanoukville should not be forgotten, and is easily accessible from Siem Reap by air or from Phnom Penh by road. Surrounded by tropical beaches and undeveloped islands it offers something for all tastes, and the 4* Sokha Beach Resort is the ideal choice here. Featuring low-rise, elegant Khmer style architecture crafted in wood and stone, all within a short drive of the centre of Sihanoukville. Eating is sure to be a significant highlight of any holiday here, as Khmer cuisine draws heavily on food from other Asian countries, especially Thailand and China. Most meals are rice based and whilst not particularly spicy, the cuisine is

COMMUNITY
ST CLARE I
HOSPICE Celebrating 25 y ears of care
t’s been 25 years since St Clare Hospice cared for its very first patient, and since then more than 10,000 people across West Essex and the East Herts border have received the charity’s compassionate care, free of charge at one of the most difficult times of their lives. Throughout that time, the Hastingwood-based Hospice is proud to say the families it supports have remained at the heart of all it does, as it continues to strive to ensure every person receives the right care, in the right place, at the right time. One of St Clare’s five strategic goals is to increase awareness and understanding of the Hospice and its incredible way of caring. A challenge for any small charity, let alone one that people think, mistakenly, is only to do with death and dying. So, a year ago, the Hospice set out on a journey and, coinciding with its Silver Anniversary celebrations,
has revealed a new visual identity and launched a new website. The inspiration for the new look sprang from a pen portrait that was written using words and phrases you would use to describe St Clare if it was a person. The Hospice also took a long, hard look at its current visual style, which was felt to be rather clinical, official and dated the opposite of the feedback given by the patients and families the charity cares for. The conclusion was St Clare’s visual identity needed to better reflect the essence of who St Clare is; to look warmer, brighter and more comforting. So a project steering group with representatives from across the Hospice was formed to oversee the development of the new branding and website. The group considered different visual styles, testing each against St Clare’s pen portrait plus nine different criteria, with one emerging as the outright winner. It was shown to groups of staff, volunteers and people who
have experienced St Clare’s care and support, and it passed with flying colours. Two phrases in particular from the pen portrait helped to spark the creative idea: ‘holding hands together’ and ‘feels like arms being wrapped around you’. St Clare chief executive Tanya Curry said: “Celebrating 25 years of incredible hospice care and looking to the future, it seems a fitting time to introduce a visual style and website that better reflect the heart and passion of St Clare: to be there for those living with a life-limiting or terminal illness and all those close to them. “As the new look is rolled out over the coming months and visitors to the new website increase, our hope is that people across West Essex will notice the difference, become more aware of St Clare Hospice and seek to understand more.” For more information, visit stclarehospice.org.uk

BIRTHING PARENTING
LIKE A PRINCESS
With the exciting news of a new arrival in our Royal Family we take a look at just how birthing has changed over the years.
M
any of you may be surprised to hear that Prince William was actually the first royal to be born in hospital; all previous royals had been homebirths, Ok even if their home was a palace. Don’t know about you but when I think of The Queen, her having a homebirth isn’t the image that springs to mind. Today mums tend to lean more towards Birthing Units or stand alone birth centres than homebirths or epidurals so how do we best prepare for our desired births? Research shows that having regular Reflexology during your pregnancy by a specialist reflexologist can have an accumulative effect leading to a reduced first stage of labour (the longest bit), increases your pain threshold and usually prevents you from needing to be induced or having gone past your due date. Obviously you get lots of other benefits from Reflexology so having to endure a lovely treatment in preparation for the birth sounds like a task worth taking. In addition regular, birth specific yoga has been shown

to help keep you calm and balanced throughout your pregnancy. Pregnancy Yoga teaches you how to be in tune with your body and your baby and learning that all important breath work which will make all the difference. I remember when women started asking about breathing classes on the NHS, the way we used to have them, hearing midwives saying “you’ve been breathing for the last 24 years and you’ve managed so far” how frustrated I felt knowing that if a woman can get her breath work right she will be more relaxed and calm, her baby will receive more oxygen and her body’s natural endorphins (pain killers) will be able to flow easier through her body as the vessels will not be so restricted. This all sounds great but is this enough? With all the TV dramatisation around childbirth most women have at best an unbalanced view of how bringing their baby into the world will be. If the reports are to be believed then Kate chose the increasingly popular Hypnobirthing technique to help her through her birth.
“Prince William was actually the first royal to be born in hospital; all previous royals had been homebirths.” This tried and tested method is taught over a series of antenatal classes teaching you how your body reacts during birthing and a collection of tools to ensure you are equipped to cope. Even more importantly it teaches your birthing partner just what to do with you and how best to support you. Was I convinced when I first heard about this ‘Hippy Birthing’ well no! I had had two children and remembered what that felt like, I have seen Hypnotists on TV so there was no way I would believe that. The first Hypnobirth I witnesses was, in my cynical brain, a fluke, the second, a coincidence but by the third and fourth I was sold. Knowing that our Queen in waiting is reported to having undertaken this form of preparation, I can see how see just popped in to hospital to have a baby and was home in time for tea. DAD’S DIARY
In Partnership with
ENTERING FATHERHOOD
WITHOUT A MAP T
his month we have been trying to push ahead with the potty training, I think I’ve finally got it under control so it was time to pass on my fatherly wisdom to the boy. This didn’t go as well as planned, as he sat down, got stage fright, tensed up and nothing ‘flowed’. The lad needed to calm down and relax so I picked him up for a soothing cuddle. This was a huge error on my part as he then relaxed everything and promptly covered me. I’m ashamed to say I fell for this 3 times on the first night, and twice on the second. My dry cleaning bills were going through the roof and something had to change... the pee and poo cuddles stopped. In better news his trampoline work is coming on superbly. Back drops, seat drops, front drops, and roly polys. The first roly poly wasn’t too successful though as he put his
“I started to wonder if we could power the house with him” head on the mat, raised his bottom into the air then proceeded to push from the legs, although instead of rotating himself over, he ended up pushing himself like a small human pyramid across the 14ft length of the mat. He stood up at the other end with his hair so statically charged it looked as though it was trying to run away from his head.

The electric current he had built up was incredible, I started to wonder if we could power the house with him. I just stood there, watching him glow, whilst expecting him to offer me a bowl of ‘Ready Brek’ (one for the older readers). He soon nailed the roly poly and then started to embark on a futile quest once the sun came out... attempting (and failing) to outrun his shadow, he spent the next 20 minutes trying to kick it off the trampoline, a brief success was given to him (as a cloud passed the sun) but this was short lived and the frantic kicking resumed once more. In the shopping queue last week, he started calling me by my first name again, I politely grinned and bared it in front of the other shoppers who were starting to smirk, he then let rip with a rather large explosion in the nappy area and proceeded to yell “Daddy poo, Daddy poo!”. On one hand, I was pleased my name had reverted to ‘Daddy’ but it was the surname he’d given me that I was less enthused about. “Come on Son, let’s go” and we hurried to the changing room with him laughing. I got there to find he’d actually produced nothing but methane and had just taken great delight in showing off his powers to the public, at the expense of my own embarrassment, cheers kid. We decided a family day out was in order and went to a beautifully tranquil nature reserve (Rye Meads) and started to walk round peacefully, spotting the ducks, dragonflies, and various other birds and wildlife. Everything had been going great and I was a little taken aback at how calmly
he had strolled around, and how genuinely fascinated by the wildlife he was. His fascination boiled over into excitement on the final leg though. We approached the final marshy bank, where an elderly photographer with a camera so powerful it could take pictures of fleas on Neptune, was sat down, crouching, poised and ready for his shot. I had to do a double take
“He then let rip with a rather large explosion in the nappy area” to make sure he was not a statue, such was his dedicated poise. Within seconds a graceful young duck, about 20 feet ahead, made its first flight into the air and I saw the photographer smile and go to take his long awaited photo. My sons joy at this moment made him yell “DUUUUCK!!!!” at the top of his lungs and point frantically at the little chick making its maiden flight. The photographer (who hadn’t seen or heard us up to this point) very nearly dropped his camera and fell into the lake, juggling his equipment in the air with a mixture of fear, resentment and anger across his face. We scurried past him, but I could feel the glare of his eyes in my back as the duck flew above us all and out of shot. “Sorry! Gotta run” I yelled, and the boy backed me up... “Daddy poooo!!”. ...TO BE CONTINUED

CLUB FOCUS
LOUGHTON
FENCING CLUB K
By Ben Sneath
een fencer John Wood founded the Loughton Fencing Club in 1971. Wood’s daughter Elizabeth would later go on to represent Great Britain in the sport at the Los Angeles Olympics of 1984. Loughton Hall on Rectory Green was the LFC’s first home, but in 2009 the club moved to the bigger and better facilities offered by the Debden Park High School on Willingale Road. The club’s membership has fluctuated from 40 members and three coaches in its halcyon years to 17 members and one coach currently. This rise and fall of interest is often down to the sport hitting the national consciousness during an Olympics or when movies featuring fencing, such as Zorro or the James Bond film Die Another Day, are released. With only 10 adults and seven children the LFC’s small sections offer a great atmosphere for learning and fencers can develop skills quicker as they get more time with the coach. The LFC attracts men and women, young and old. In fact, the ages range from children as young as 10 to the adults in their late 60s. There’s a diverse membership and it’s trying to break the image fencing has as a sport only taught at private schools. Both the children and adult sections meet on Wednesday evenings during the school term. Children from 7pm8.30pm and adults from 7.30pm-9pm.

Each session starts with a warm up and foot exercises and then the fencers can challenge others in their group. The sessions overlap so the children can pick up new skills from the adults. Putting them all through their paces is the Romanian international coach. Having a professional coach means the club has insurance to cover its members. The coach also helps members build up their British Fencing Association grades. There’s no pressure to win competitions and chairman, Alan Hall feels the club is more sociable than competitive. There aren’t internal tournaments, but members are encouraged to compete with others and build up their experience. The LFC does enter national competitions, however, and one of the highlights was its performance at the 2009 RCS Fencing Club Tournament - two club members came top of their categories. People of all backgrounds and of all abilities are welcome at the LFC. Beginners can learn the basics of fencing from experienced members and the coach. To encourage new members there’s a ‘two weeks free’ deal when they join, while they can also use the club’s kit to start with and work out if they enjoy it. The sessions are priced at £10 for two hours. Not bad when you consider everything you get for it: learning a fun sport, getting fit, meeting new people and building your confidence.
