How do they do it? First week back and @EssexCentralMag retain their effortless glamour. @AbbottsTravel
Dear Darren, I was reading through the January issue of Essex Central Magazine, and I came across the article titled ‘Volunteers knit trauma teddies for child victims of crime’ and found it very inspiring. I have been a keen knitter for many years and am looking to start a knitting group with a few friends and hopefully some other local residents. I thought the campaign mentioned in the article was a great idea and wondered if you had the details of how we can get involved, or details of any other local organisations who may accept knitted donations for similar projects? Many thanks Mrs Kay

CHILDREN TAKE PART IN PERFORMANCE OF MACBETH
Pupils at Hereward Primary School, Loughton, were thoroughly entertained when they were visited by Shakespearean actor Anthony Glenn who performed Macbeth to the whole school. Using a range of props and selecting children from the audience to play various roles, Mr Glenn - from the ‘Shaking up Shakespeare’ company managed to tell the whole story with style and humour in just 60 minutes! Headteacher Matt Woolard said: “Anthony has been visiting Hereward for over 15 years and his performance is one of the highlights of the year. “The children love taking part and really appreciate the enthusiasm he brings to his drama and story-telling.”

LOCAL NEWS ONGAR TOWN COUNCIL SEEKS VIEWS SOUGHT OVER CEMETERY CHAPEL Ongar Cemetery
Suggestions for possible future uses for the Ongar Cemetery chapel are being sought by Ongar Town Council. The council is to undertake a twomonth period of consultation inviting people and local organisations to come up with ideas for the building which is in urgent need of repair. The council has obtained
three estimates for priority work, all of which are far higher than the figure of £2,000 to £3,000 estimated by council vice-chairman John Reynolds, town clerk Aimi Middlehurst said at a recent finance committee meeting. Councillor Derek Birch. speaking at the meeting, said: “If a group comes back and is prepared to work with the council then we explore that avenue.” Some years ago the council held
discussions with the town’s history society about whether the chapel could be used as a museum and had assurance from English Heritage that funding could be made available provided the building had a purpose. However the history society later decided that the building was too small and in the wrong place for such a use. The issue will also be raised at the annual town meeting.
STUDENTS EXPERIENCE A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SIXTH FORM STUDENT
Year 11 students at Debden Park High School spent ‘A Day in the Life of a Sixth Form Student’. Dressed in their smart business attire, the students followed a specially-created timetable of A-Level taster lessons to give them an idea of what life will be
like when they join the Sixth Form in September. Each lesson was designed to inform and inspire students, leaving them with an understanding of what each course involves and what lies ahead. The day focused on students’ futures, moving on to the challenge of A-Levels and deciding on a pathway to their future. The day was enjoyed by staff and students alike. Students were inspired, knowledge was gained and new friendships were formed. The vast majority of Year 11 students applied for a place at the school’s Sixth Form. They will be the second cohort of A-Level students through the doors of the Sixth Form which opened last September. Director of Sixth Form Sharon Palmer said: “It was such an amazing day, seeing all of our Year 11 students so engaged in their lessons and so enthusiastic about the next step in the academic career. “Our Year 12 students also had a fantastic day raising their aspirations and building the futures they are working so hard towards.”
NEW HOME FOR ASHWORTH GROUP
The Ashworth Group are a recent arrival to Buckhurst Hill, after outgrowing their existing South Woodford office space. The inventory and cleaning company work very closely with estate agents and private landlords throughout the Essex and London areas and decided that the new location in Queens Road was the next step on a very successful business model. Since 2001 owner Jae Gadar has built the reputation and service of the group to now cater nearly 800 jobs every month, and in just the last 18 months the company has doubled in size (hence the need for new office space!). Jae explained the company goals for the upcoming year, “In 2016 we are planning on cementing our reputation with all our clients, new and old. The aim is to secure new relationships and contracts with clients who might not be aware of our company in East London and Essex. Bringing a stream lined procedure to our Jae Gadar services and keeping to the highest quality, we are aiming to lead the market.”

Moon rocks land at West Hatch High School
WEST HATCH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS GET TO GRIPS WITH THE MOON
Exciting and rare samples of moon rocks and a collection of impressive meteorites landed at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, when students enjoyed a unique, interactive experience of astronomy during their science lessons. Highlights included getting up close to hand-sized meteorites enabling the students to touch a real piece of space. Included in the collection was a 1.2 billion-yearold piece of Mars and a 4.3 billion-year-old nickel meteorite. The solar system is 4.6 billion years old. Science teacher Phillip Peters organised the fantastic opportunity which coincided with Year 7 and Year 8 students’ study of space, astronomy and the Moon.
As well as Year 7 and 8 students getting the opportunity to see the samples, students and staff could also attend after-school sessions to get an even closer look of the moon rocks and meteorites. The samples, provided by the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), were collected during the later 1960s and 1970s during some of NASA’s first manned space missions. Professor John Womersley, STFC’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to be able to see, touch and really experience such important and exciting messengers from space turning science fiction into science fact.”

Following the ever so popular embellished hair trend, thick ribbons and headbands are making a comeback from the 70s for 2016. This is a great style for a wedding or special event as it’s a very simple tool that looks expensive and luxurious. We’ve seen it used at various shows with a mixture of textures and fabrics including crushed velvet, satin and leather. Try mixing it up with a roughly thrown together hairstyle, neatly finished with a hair band to create an edgy look.

a DIY look at home, blow dry your hair as normal using a vented radial brush to create volume, you can purchase this at Finesse Hair & Beauty. Once the hair is dry, spray your hands with some hairspray and use your fingers to lift and style the hair. This gives it amazing structure, volume and lift. If you struggle to do your own bouncy blow dry then simply add on a bouncy blow dry to your next hair appointment.
BLEACH BLONDE
Carrying on from the soft candy shades of last year - girls are now embracing an all-over bleach colour. This is easy to achieve for ladies with fair hair but a bit more tricky for us Brunettes. Nevertheless, with a continued hair treatment schedule in place, we too can achieve this look without too much damage. Team up with soft beach waves and your ready to glow! Men are also trying this new trend out, famously seen on Zayn Malik.
Vented Radial Brush £8-£20
Human Hair Clip In Extensions £60-£140
JUST ONE NIGHT’ HAIR
Model of 2015 Gigi Hadid has followed this trend with her faux bob (believe or not her bob is a wig), we are seeing a lot of celebrities wearing styles that are temporary and can change their whole look instantly. Realistic wigs and hairpieces are becoming much more common and being embraced not only by celebs but also by us normal people too! Experiment by adding a flash of colour or a fringe for one night. It is a sure way to add some excitement to your standard everyday look. You can purchase clip in temporary hair extensions from Finesse Hair & Beauty that will last you for years. BE FREE FROM BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA AT LAST
SUFFERING WITH BACK PAIN? TRIED MANUAL TREATMENTS? IDD THERAPY IS FOR YOU. IDD Therapy is the targeted disc treatment for sufferers of back pain, neck pain and related symptoms such as sciatica. In clinics nationwide, this non-invasive option helps to bridge the gap between ‘hands-on’ treatments and surgery. What is IDD Therapy? Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy is a non-invasive, targeted disc treatment for unresolved back pain, neck pain and associated symptoms such as arm pain and leg pain (sciatica). Available through a network of spinal disc specialists across the UK, IDD Therapy delivers a precise and more consistent treatment than is possible with the hands alone or with traditional mechanical methods like traction.
What does the programme involve? You will be fully assessed before undergoing treatment; this includes a review of a recent MRI or suitable scan.
How does IDD Therapy work? IDD Therapy uses gentle pulling forces to distract (draw apart) specific spinal segments where discs are damaged or bulging, removing pressure and irritation from targeted discs and any trapped nerves. Patients have a structured programme of regular IDD Therapy sessions which allows their body to adapt to treatment whilst progressively relieving pain and improving movement.
Treatment is gentle and safe. Sessions begin with some Thermedic heat therapy on the area to be treated, warming up the muscles and ligaments. You will remain fully clothed throughout treatment and be fitted with a soft, ergonomic harness for comfort and support. The machine tilts upright, allowing you to step on from the standing position without pain or difficulty. Once you are comfortably harnessed, computer-controlled pulling forces are gently applied at

In the past, slipped disc patients often had to consider invasive options if manual treatments couldn’t get them better. Now with IDD Therapy, these patients have a very good chance of becoming pain-free
You will feel totally relaxed during the 25 minute session on the SPINA machine. Afterwards, some cold therapy is applied to minimise any temporary soreness which may be caused by muscles being worked in a new way. Gentle exercise and activity are gradually introduced as treatment progresses - essential for long-term pain relief. Who can benefit from IDD Therapy? Typical candidates for IDD Therapy are people who have had back pain, neck pain or sciatica for some time and have not responded to manual therapy and exercise. Reasons to choose IDD Therapy • Your current treatment is not working • You want to stop taking painkillers • You are seeking long-term pain relief • You want to return to normal activities If you have unresolved back pain or neck pain and need help, call Atkins Physiotherapy Consultants on 020 8504 0478 or visit: www.AtkinsPhysio.com

Finding consistency is key to success

Jez Godlonton
20 years ago I was in a very depressed place with no purpose or health goals. I was seriously over weight (4 stone) and took no care of my body with an addiction to cigarettes and fatty food. After a visit to the doctors I decided it was time make some serious sacrifices to the way I live. I learnt that the label which people seem to call fun is actually the opposite. I’m here to tell you that the label of QUALITY of LIFE is actually FUN, but you have to make sacrifices to realise this. I am a great believer that if someone wants to do something and is

prepared to set themselves achievable goals and prioritise their health and fitness, then anything is possible. On my journey, I have learnt that life is never going to be an easy ride but the ride can become effective and efficient and hard obstacles can be overcome when we find purpose in who we are. Looking after and taking care of ourselves is one of the best ways to finding purpose. It helps you not just physically but importantly mentally as well. It doesn’t mean you have to be super fit, it’s just when we re-align our focus to having some sort of quality of life which can determine our future. The human body is like life’s journey it’s self, as when we strengthen our body we break down muscle fibre so it rebuilds stronger each time if this is achieved in a healthy way. For me going down to a level that wasn’t healthy actually gave me the motivation to bring myself to a healthier, fitter and balanced level which made me stronger physically & mentally. Setting small goals with an end goal was key. For me the end goal was not just to run the London Marathon (which I’ve now done 3 times) but to make health & fitness part of my everyday life and to find a hobby and friends that I could relate to.
10 years ago I qualified as a personal trainer teaching others how to achieve what I did, with balancing health, fitness, family, work, study and social life. But my qualification wouldn’t be complete to teach this if I had not experienced it myself. Today it gives me great satisfaction when I see someone make changes to bring purpose into their lives and also pass their experience onto others.
3 TIPS I’VE FOUND TO BE HELPFUL
1 Do your best to adapt and overcome in every circumstance you face. 2 Never make excuses but give yourself a genuine reason why you shouldn’t do something. 3 Give yourself regular rewards with every small goal achieved. Everyone of us has a unique DNA with our appetites, desires of the heart and health. But wherever you are at on your journey of life... my hope is that a seed of motivation and purpose is being built to bring fulfilment in what you can achieve and overcome. www.fat2fit.me.uk www.jeremyjames.biz

welcome colourful sight in gardens and woodlands this month comes from the wide variety of beautiful hellebores that are pushing their way up through the frozen ground. Hellebores come in a range of colours from creamy white to vibrant lime greens, and some can be almost black. The ideal position to plant them is under deciduous trees where the plant will remain sheltered from the sun throughout the year. A stunning Helleborus is ‘Anna’s Red’, (main picture) which has red single flowers with a lovely evergreen marbled foliage. Helleborus orientalis ‘Blue Lady’ has upright stems and the flowers are

PLAYGROUND ASSOCIATION
Proposed plans of the playground
Campaigning and fundraising to upgrade the play equipment in Wanstead Playground.
Current run down and tired equipment
A
campaign to renovate the children’s playground on Christchurch Green in Wanstead started in November 2014. The seed was sown via a moan on Facebook about the poor condition of the playground. Old and tired, with dated equipment and nothing for younger babies, older children or children with special needs, it desperately needed a facelift. A group of local mothers met with the local councillor, set up Facebook and Twitter accounts and formed the Wanstead Playground Association. Since then, they’ve been hard at work. They started with an incredibly successful crowd fund and gained numerous donations from local businesses. They have organised many events, including Sing-a-long Frozens, comedy nights and a very successful black tie gala dinner. Several grants have been awarded, including £11,000 from the Mayor’s High Street Fund and £10,000 from The Headley Foundation. Sarah Boud, Chair of the Wanstead playground Association said, “The year has flown by but it hasn’t all been plain sailing. We’ve had highs (our black tie dinner, being awarded
the Mayor’s High Street funding), and lows (the organisation of said black tie dinner!). There’s been a lot of hard slog – pounding the pavements delivering letters, building our mailing list and manning a freezing stall at The Farmers Market, and some really fun events - like our Singa-long Frozens. We’ve learnt a lot of new skills - social media, blogging, article writing and public speaking to name but a few. Best of all, we’ve met lots of lovely people who have really supported our campaign.” So, one year on, what’s going on? “Well, we’ve now raised £90,000, following a Christmas announcement from The London Borough of Redbridge that they will be donating up to £19,500. We still have funds coming in from various sources including text donations via Just Giving and Give As You Live contributions, and a couple of grant applications outstanding. All things considered, it’s been a great year. We’ve raised more than we dreamed possible, and Wanstead will have a new playground next spring.” For more information please visit the website www.wansteadplayground.co.uk.

“G
eorge loves jumping in muddy puddles, everyone loves jumping in muddy puddles”... this quote, as any parents of ‘Peppa Pig’ fans will know, is used frequently in the programme, and my own ‘George’ is no exception to this activity. He watches the show religiously and takes their opinions fully on board, so when the recent rains came down he was quick to throw his feet into his wellies and sprint to the park for some jumping. He leapt like a grasshopper from puddle to puddle, falling and laughing like some mud-obsessed escaped lunatic. It was at this stage I realised jogging bottoms where the wrong garments to wear. The grinning swamp monster squelched his way back to me, arms open wide for a cuddle, “No, no” I quickly stuttered, “lets hold the other end of this stick eh? And follow me home” as I offered him one end of a stick long enough to keep me from getting coated in his mud. We must have appeared like we were looking for any stray limbo dancers as we walked home, across the width of a pavement each grasping one end of the branch. I realised I’d been watching too much Peppa Pig with him the other day when I actually shouted at the TV, “I really hate Peppa, she’s a complete moron!” as she did something foolish. The Mrs looked at me, eyebrows raised with a knowing look that seemed to say, “Really?... Peppa’s the moron here is she??”. We’ve been attempting more potty training lately, and I’m pleased to report this is going well, but there was a recent incident that took us back a few steps. It was
64
ESSEX CENTRAL
late afternoon, and he started to grab himself and dance around. It was either a Michael Jackson tribute or the lad needed to pee, I opted for the latter and shuffled him over to the potty. He sat down and unleashed a biblical torrent that gushed from his body, unfortunately for me his private parts were not aimed down, and were instead aimed directly at me. The proud smiling dad sitting opposite the human fire hydrant. To say I was soaked is an understatement, as I was engulfed in a yellow tsunami
“He leapt like a grasshopper from puddle to puddle ” that left me struggling for breath and balance. “Me did it, all done” he stood up and began to hoist his pants back up whilst I was left flapping around on the floor like a dying fish. He strolled back into the front room and carried on watching Peppa, his work was done. Last week, he stayed at my mum’s, she’s not known for her discipline (especially not with grandchildren) and I’m sure the boys see her as easy to walk over as London Bridge. I informed her that when George had misbehaved we had been removing his toys, or placing him on the naughty step, and she nodded keenly. Later that night I received a phone call, she was howling with laughter “I did what you said, haha, I told him that if he was naughty I would sit him on the naughty step hehe, but he just looked at me and giggled and said ‘you don’t have any naughty steps
Nanny’”. My mother lives in a flat and my 2 year old son had clocked this fact and called her bluff. I’ve got to admit, I was quite proud of the little fella. When I picked him up the next day, he insisted on opening his new umbrella, in the car. Aside from the alleged ‘bad luck’ it’s also mildly tiresome being prodded every few minutes in the neck with a Thomas the Tank Engine umbrella spoke. “Expecting rain in the car are you George?” “Yes Daddy”. This has been going on for over a week now, as soon as he enters the cars he asks, “Where’s my umbrella?” and pops the thing open before I’ve even had time to put his seatbelt on, this then means my eyes are at the mercy of the Thomas spokes whilst I’m frantically trying to clasp his buckle together, and he calmly shelters under his umbrella away from any rain that may suddenly fall from the underside of the car roof. This month has also seen the emergence of a new creature in our home, the ‘dolfish’. Most of us will know this animal as a dolphin, but not George, who is intent on calling it a dolfish. I realise I should stress at this stage, I’m referring to a new cuddly foam filled toy dolphin, not a live aquatic marine mammal frantically thrashing around in our kitchen, or wedged into our fish tank at a rakish angle, no, I’m simply referring to a stuffed toy (so put down the phone to the RSPCA). We tried teaching him the word dolphin, and even asked him if he actually meant ‘goldfish’ but he is adamant it’s a dol-fish. He asks where it is each night “Don’t worry George, he’s sheltering under your umbrella in the car!” ...TO BE CONTINUED

OAKFI E LD ARCHERS
CLUB FOCUS
O
akfield Archers was established in 1962. The club has moved to several different grounds and have now been at The Willows in Forest Road, Hainault for over 25 years. For what is a comparatively small club much has been achieved over the years; a wheelchair archer won Team Bronze in the Barcelona Paralympics, juniors have made it to National Squad and shot for England and Team GB. Since 1989 Tony and Joan Ikel have been running the Redbridge Junior Archery Squad for the London Youth Games which is a mini Olympics between the Greater London Boroughs and is the largest junior sporting event in Europe. The team have won many medals over the years and in one period of 16 years they won Gold 13 times, for the last 2 years they have won Silver. Oakfield shoot in a variety of Leagues with a variety of bow types often with excellent results. Some members belong to re-enactment societies, taking part in a variety of events, including film and television. Tony Ikel has been a National Judge for many years, having Judged at club, county and National events all over the country plus for 15 years he judged the Malta FITA STAR and his wife, Joan, shot most years and won medals often. Most years they organised for archers from all over
66
ESSEX CENTRAL
Essex to join them in the tournament. Tony Ikel is also a Senior Coach who regularly coaches wheelchair archers at Stoke Mandeville hospital and archers come to the club for performance coaching. Many club members have been selected to shoot for Essex over the years and there has always been a small but often successful junior section. Archery is not just about top level competition, many members only shoot at the club and, if they wish, there are a variety of personal awards they can shoot for or, in the summer, sit and enjoy the sunshine and the company and shoot as much as they want with other club members. Oakfield Archers run beginners classes throughout the year. The course comprises of six lessons where you will be trained by fully qualified instructors and coaches as well as being loaned training equipment for the duration of each lesson. Once you have passed the course you will be given the opportunity to join the club and participate in club nights; county, regional and national competitions; and social events throughout the year. This course costs £60 for adults and £50 for juniors (over 10s). If you are interested in taking part please contact Joan Ikel on 020 8551 1074 or for more information visit www.oakfield.org.uk or see facebook.com/OakfieldArchers.
