Where is Zanzibar?
Home to the tribes of Africa for over 20 000 years, the islands of Unguja (Zanzibar) offered a safe harbour to the great Arab sailing dhows of old as they plied their trade across the azure blue Indian Ocean. With heady aroma’s of vanilla, clove and tamarind, these beautiful Spice Islands have harboured weary travellers for centuries. Zanzibar is located off the East Coast of Africa, about 25 miles from the Tanzanian Coast. There are two islands, Unguja and Pemba. Zanzibar is approximately 6 degrees south of the equator. Zanzibar’s local people are an incredible mixture of ethnic backgrounds, indicative of her colourful history. Islam is the dominant religion, and practiced by most Zanzibaris, although there are also followers of Christianity and Hinduism. Population is estimated at 800,000, with the largest concentration being Zanzibar City which has approximately 100,000 inhabitants.
