Lanre Olagoke
B
orn in London in 1962, at the age of four, his family moved back to Nigeria, where he grew up before returning to London aged nineteen. From the outset Lanre loved colours and started painting where
his love affair with art set him on a journey from homelessness to hope. He was born into an affluent Nigerian family, with a lack of appreciation for the importance of culture and art which led him to rebel causing a downward spiral to the streets. Drugs and gambling led Lanre from being a promis-
ing student to becoming homeless on the streets of London. People, including family, thought he had gone crazy. However, the young painter found solace in his work. An early inspiration was Ben Enwonwu, the first African artist to receive the honour of sculpting Her Royal Highness Queen Elisabeth II, resulting in the bronze portrait of 1957. Lanre first met Professor Ben Enwonwu in 1985-87 and became an apprentice under his tutelage. Lanre reminisces, “It was an honour to be in the presence of a legend, difficult to please and very particular, he told me to always remember that no one can be like Lanre, and the talent I have been given will make me great.' Lan re h as gath ered experien ce th ro u gh h is epic journey and the highs and lows he has encountered have
inspired 40 years of truly breath taking emotive Art.
