EDITOR’S NOTE
Phenomenal
FASHION Real fashion lovers know that it’s about more than just clothing, it’s a form of expression, a way to convey a message, a route to accomplish a mission. In this issue, we honor three particularly stellar designers who have mastered all that and more. Like many of us, these designers pour their hearts and life purposes into their craft, going beyond just “making a dress” to creating collections that make a difference. Although they hail from different walks of life and create garments that serve different purposes, they all share the same vision of love, authenticity, and sustainability. As always, we’re so excited for all of the amazing submissions we have in store. It’s been a while since we’ve had all of our original favorite photographers in one place (shoutout to Faiyaz, Raphael, Ron, and Aleksandr) and I personally couldn’t be more happy. This is another beautiful one thanks to you and all of our new contributors as well. Thank you all so much again for your patience in this overly extended delay. It’s been a crazy road getting here but we did! Now please go enjoy.
PEACE +

COMMUTER‘S COMPANION
The PóAR NYC Commuter speaks to the cosmopolitan brand of consumers who are constantly on the go, providing a stylish and secure solution for its fashionable carrier. Its sleek, uncomplicated design boasts modern luxury with a hint of vintage, is crafted from high quality leather with steel finishing, and has a signature twist - the smaller compartments you’d normally find tucked inside of most bags are placed on the outside, which is a relief when reaching for the most common necessities (subway and business cards, sunglasses, pens, etc). The emerging brand’s founder, Rosa Oviedo, started PóAR on the basis of creating luxurious accessories that provided an innovative and unique way to make life just a little easier for gals on the go like herself. She started with a small line of chic anti-theft, anti-drop gloves for smartphones and branched off to handbags, starting with her original Commuter Backpack. It’s since been upgraded and is available in several colors, including this rich forest green. We imagine that Fashion Week is just one of many scenarios where this sleek backpack comes in perfectly handy. And, need we mention that it’s an eye catcher? 14 | ESTELA

Tell us about your SS18 collection; what’s the inspiration behind it? What is the mission statement?
I always keep an eye out for what’s trending for business purposes and my own personal style.
MM: My SS18 collection was inspired by the mythological and sexual history of Roman and Greek goddesses. The collection is called Greek Mythology Downtown LA. My brand identity is one that is timeless; heavily Baroque Renaissance and The Venice Carnival inspired.
For example, body suits are everywhere right now. They’re easy for women to throw on with jeans, skirts, cargo pants, and just about anything. You can dress them up or down for any occasion! I most definitely add extra cleavage in bodysuits. Ultimately, I would love for Madame Methven to start trends that all women follow!
In this collection, I added a modern twist of Downtown LA with the incredible love stories of Greek Mythology. My entire brand is about falling in love again. Most women fall in love and think to themselves, “It’s never going to happen again.” If we study the history of Greek goddesses and the correlation they have to the world and each other, we would know that love, art, and passion are inevitable emotions that a woman will feel often in her life. It brings me back to believing every person in this world can find love. That’s what my lingerie is all about; falling in love repeatedly. I really want to make a clear statement to all women out there that no matter what size, shape, or ethnicity you are, heartbroken or not, you are empowered by Madame Methven. My custom lingerie pieces are tailored to speak intensely through the heart. Each piece has a story for you to learn about and live through.
What was your creative process like? Were there any obstacles you were faced with while creating? MM: My creative process is amazing. Working in my Atelier with my team, I design the fabrics, I do the draping on the mannequins while listening to opera and drinking a glass of my favorite wine. My creativity is endless. I don’t usually get creators’ block and neither does my team. The only challenges I face is when people work slower than my liking. My main problem as a workaholic is waiting on others to produce quickly and efficiently. I face many challenges throughout my day from production, to technical, and personal matters. It’s nothing too major because at Madame Methven, things are 99.9 percent in control. I have structured my business this way to stay effective and efficient, while bringing the world’s most luxurious lingerie to life.
Have any of the current trends influenced this collection?
Which piece or look is your personal favorite?
MM: Yes, the brand name is Madame Methven of course! We never change the identity of the brand. We love for everything to be over the top; especially my Made to Adore collection.
MM: My favorite and most expensive product that I’ve created is The Adamantine (Adda-man-teen). The Adamantine, additionally referred to as Adamant, is a hard substance whether composed of

diamond, other gemstones, or unbreakable objects that reflects an ampleness of light. This design is a bespoke black venetian style hand beaded lace bra and pantie set consisting of luminous diamond silhouettes. The creations price ranges from $200,000 – $1.5 million depending of the qualities of stones, fabrics, etc. This masterpiece is perfect for special occasions and made for any woman who wants to shine bright in the bedroom and be the main attraction for that unbreakable experience. If you dare to fall in love again, experience the real pleasure of the Adamantine by Madame Methven. Describe the woman that wears Madame Methven. MM: Madame Methven is for all women. Women can live through each collection in which their sensual desires will never go unmet. With every piece, there is always a new beginning to unlimited experiences. This gives women the opportunity to determine their power and sensual persuasion due to the exquisite manipulation of artistic lingerie. Along with enchanting fashion shows and risqué’ photoshoots, Madame Methven is a brand that extrudes dreaming and the art of storytelling. The collections consistently set the mood for upcoming seasons. Our brand is visually penetrating with a unique identity and historical background of elegance. Madame Methven is eye catching and breathes Baroque Renaissance with a striking dominatrix twist, seizing everyone’s desires. Madame Methven is TIMELESS.
What’s next for you? MM: I am constantly creating new content for the brand. As previously stated, my creativity has no limits. From magazine spreads to runways, we will dominate the lingerie industry. While empowering women and playing on baroque renaissance, I will continue to embed the art of story telling through my intricate designs. Stay tuned for all that Madame Methven has to offer!

Tell us about your SS18 collection; what’s the inspiration behind it? What is the mission statement? RAY: My SS18 collection was about how I as a designer could help the fashion industry reduce carbon footprint and infuse sustainability. I moved away from digital prints and used natural plant dyes to create a juxtaposition with handmade embroideries, leaf and petal prints. Some of the fabrics used were a mix of banana blends, organic cottons, organic silks and bamboo blends. Natural dyes such as onion peel extracts, Indian madder, basil, and turmeric were also used. As a designer I have always tried different methods to reduce carbon footprint. This being my third show at New York Fashion Week for spring, I decided to use the plant itself without killing it or endangering the environment around it.
Have any of the current trends influenced this collection? RAY: Botanical prints have been a huge [trend] for the past season, so I decided to take that across. The cross between minimalism and intricate embroidery too was something that I played with.
What was your creative process like? Were there any obstacles you were faced with while creating? RAY: The creative process was challenging. As we pressed the chlorophyll onto fabrics such as silks and cottons, the stain would react very differently with every fabric. On certain cottons, they would start aging and the color would change in a few days; on silks, the green would remain.
except for rose petals, which gave its natural color. So even yellow flowers that when pressed gave a blue hue. The trial and error was interesting, as it taught me how plant protein reacted on different fabrics and on animal protein such as silk. I am still learning a lot though. Next time I shall tie up with a botanist! Which piece or look is your personal favorite? RAY: I have a lot of pieces that are my favorites, as they have involved intricate handiwork. The aging of natural prints are a beauty to behold, from green turning to brown on cottons, while some were still vividly green on silks. The beauty of this was that the leaves gave an almost fossilized effect when pressed. There is a crop top and skirt which is of mixed media involving leaves and embroidery on banana cotton which still holds my fancy as the embroidery talks of the garden and the visits by bees and other birds. A world that we would love to have our children enjoy.
Describe the woman that wears Runa Ray. RAY: The woman who wears my brand is the authentic woman, who would like to know where her clothes come from. A woman who feels responsible for the world she will leave behind. She is sexy, confident and intelligent.
What’s next for you? RAY: To explore various unique methods for sustainability, to make sure that all my clothes are decomposable, and to have the ability to give them back to mother earth and create the circle of life once again.

Tell us about your SS18 collection; what’s the inspiration behind it? What is the mission statement? The inspiration behind my SS18 collection was wanting to create something fun, inspiring and colorful in these difficult and dark times that we are living in. Death by Dolls is about the empowerment of women, the encouragement to express oneself through fashion, to embrace being different instead of blending in. The chance to not just break the rules, but make them.
Have any of the current trends influenced this collection? Fringe and denim have been a big influence in this collection as well as lots of vibrant colors and crystal embellishment. ESTELA | 115

What was your creative process like? Were there any obstacles you were faced with while creating? My creative process comes from a place of being able to connect with my surroundings. I sometimes get visions of what I want to create and I write or sketch it so the idea stays fresh in my memory. Other times they are more planned out. There are many obstacles in any creative process because it can be difficult translating your ideas into reality so it takes a lot of time and patience to get it right.
Which piece or look is your personal favorite? There are a couple but my personal favorites would have to be the denim jacket and jeans with crystal sleeves and pants as well as the beaded rainbow leather jacket. Denim has had a huge comeback in the past couple of years and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So I do love darker denim with crystals it’s great because you can dress it up or down depending on the occasion and still look fabulous. The rainbow jacket is really another favorite of mine which is really an art piece because it is hand beaded and so beautiful in person.

Describe the woman that wears Death by Dolls. The woman that wears Death By Dolls is a woman that is strong, confident, and daring. A woman that wants to stand out from the crowd instead of blending in. Someone that makes her own rules and not only breaks them.
What’s next for you? I’m currently working on expanding my brand in Europe and the Middle East. I’m looking forward to working on a few collaborations early next year and of course working on my next winter collection. 118 | ESTELA
