Global Level
At World, Country
Being a prominent IT hub and tourist destination, reaching Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, is not an issue. This historic city enjoys excellent connectivity with the rest of country via air, road and rail. The Hyderabad Airport, also known as Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and Hyderabad International Airport, is just 30 km away from the city centre. Besides, the city is served by three major railway junctions called Hyderabad Railway Station (3 km away), Secunderabad Railway Station (7 km away) and Kachiguda Railway Station (2 km away).
At City Level
Nehru O.R.R
At the City Scale, Laad Bazaar is located in the Old City region of Hyderabad where the heritage of Hyderabad can be observed in all its glory. This area is the core of the city, which can even be observed in the way the city has grown, with just one aerial view of Hyderabad. It is located exactly at the Centre of the City of Hyderabad adjacent to the Charminar

High Court Hyderabad
The area is rich in heritage and steeped in history. The region marks the Mecca Masjid ,the Chowmahalla Palace. Once the water source of Hyderabad, now struggling to flow clearly the Music River circumvents to the North. The high Court and Madina Circle are just within the 1 Km circle of the area.

Orientation To help understand the best way to orient the buildings in the Urban Block, Radiation analysis with the help of Rhino, Grasshopper and Lady Bug components was done. The Radiation Rose was generated which helped understand the major radiation reach throughout the year The inference drawn from the Analysis is that these buildings built in accordance with the local vernacular style and guidelines are in the best orientation that can be made possible
Picture shows the Radiation Rose for the Urban Block
To help understand the radiation Analysis in regard to how the buildings are oriented and which is the best way to orient it, a smaller block within the block was selected to help understand better. A Sky Dome was also generated to help understand the way the Sun moves in the Sky and the radiation that falls on these areas. The analysed duration is from Jan-Dec. STREET Laad Bazaar street layouts start with the minimum being 4M and the widest road being 24M. The main Laad Bazaar road has been paved with paver blocks to help enhance the experience of pedestrians in and around Char Minar area. The road does not facilitate parking or two way traffic flow. traffic is restricted based on the seasons. For example during Ramadan, the area is cordoned off as pedestrian only, during weekend mornings there is access of vehicular traffic which is otherwise completely restricted. The least wide roads have parking taking up most of the space.

ISSUES Planning & Morphology Connectivity Services Environmental COVID 19
Planning & Morphology Built Up Area in restricted Zone Violation of Byelaws No offsets leading to congestion Unsafe Environment Narrow Streets Restricted Air Movement Parking Hawkers and Vendors Improper Land Use No Public Shelters
Connectivity Congestion Heavy Pedestrian Movement Unruly Vehicular Movement No proper Road Crossing Not properly maintained pavement / sidewalk Pathways blocked by Hawkers Pedestrianisation Projects brings in more problems. Not Barrier Free
Services Waste Management Hygiene and Littering Stormwater management Parking
Environmental & COVID 19 Water Logging Not enough green space Fresh Air Movement Restricted
MAJOR ISSUES Need for Planned Foot Paths
Need for Preservation of Gulzar House
Rede Road Sizes as small as 4M
Restricted Air Movement in the alley ways.
Focus on the Clock Tower in the vicinity
Heights to be Regulated
Need for Preservation of Heritage Buildings inside the Block
Need for Public Shelters
Guidelines for Protected Area Hawkers under ASI to be redesigned
SURVEY To help understand the general public’s view of La a d B a z a a r, w e conducted a survey with questions associated with the pedestrian crossing design (community participation experiment) Along with this, we took one question on the familiarity with certain terminologies. This helped us understand how people of different age groups, from different localities and different occupations understand urban blocks.
The participants were asked whether they have ever heard of the following terms. (above) The age group of the participants (below) The colours they associated with the Old City of Hyderabad. (Right) The places from which the surveys were taken (Far Right)

Install temporary traffic barriers and “Local Traffic Only”, Slow/ Shared, or branded signs (e.g. “Stay Healthy Streets”) at main vehicle entry points.
Pedestrian Use vertical elements to delineate curb extensions or refuge islands. Shorten crossing distance and reduce speeding by repurposing or narrowing vehicle lanes. • Apply reflective traffic tape or paint to delineate pedestrian space and increase crosswalk visibility. This can be seen to be reflected in the main roads with the main traffic flow north of Laad Bazaar.
Parkways or waterfront corridors with few intersections. • Low-volume residential streets. • Commercial streets with local restaurant/retail clusters and no transit. Install temporary traffic barriers and “Emergency Vehicle/Delivery Only” signs at intersections. • Establish grid of entry points into local streets where barricades should be installed.
High Street The “High Street” concept, if applied to the old city of Hyderabad would be the main bazaars like Afzal Gunj and Osman Gunj etc. The main design factors that we had to think about were the Walkability Green spaces Safety Mixture of land use
Community Participation To h e l p u n d e r s t a n d t h e concept of Community Participation, we got people involved in what they have to say about Laad Bazaar Area. Once we star ted getting feedback, we asked them to try designing a Pedestrian Crossing for the the area keeping in mind the context of Charminar being a focal point. Along with the brief, they were given a Google Map Pin of where the crossing would be and they were asked to design for a width of 2.5 m and a length of upto 8 m.
Shuttles Creating Boarding Points from the two nearest Public Transport Point will help in delineating the crowds around the Urban Block. The Parking Spaces can be designed around the Boarding Point, so that the shuttles can operate efficiently from the Boarding and Disembarkation Points. These Points will also have Electric Bike Points which can be hired.
