Site Plan
View to site
The report is a thorough documentation of a variety of resources, from the type of construction materials to the quantity of manpower and technology applied in the construction of my proposed project of a Traditional Music and Dance Performing Arts Center. A good project management is required to keep the construction going within the time frame and cost constraints that have been set during the early stages of the project. The work breakdown structure is also important to achieve better accuracy and efficiency. Risk Log is also initiated for risk identification as solutions can only be pre-determined by understanding the impact of the risk. All the initiatives taken are to ensure the smooth operation of the project, and to minimize the possibility of a risk that might affect a project’s success.
Project Scope The project scope is to record and document the site analysis at Jalan Ampang which includes the SWOT analysis and the Success Criteria which in turn will be used as a guideline for the construction project. The process of the building construction will be disintegrated into smaller and distinct schedule, and the data collected will be based on the timeframe as well.
Project Deliverables This includes a full set of design report, design drawings, construction drawings, detail drawings, along with a well-planned human resources, risk analysis and Gantt chart to provide an accurate analytical data to promote work progress and documentation.
Project Objectives
Strength :
Weaknesses :
- Site 60-80% shaded. - Site is within tourist trail. - Site is surrounded by public transport facilities - Easy access through several public transportations (Well permeable). - Site is directly opposite Menara KL. Therefore, it provides a spectacular view for users.
The aim of this project is to bring back the site’s identity. The proposed building, when successfully completed, will bring life back to the dormant site, attracting locals and non-locals to the site to witness a project that would stitch the Old and New KL together.
Opportunity : - Site is under GOKL City Bus – which is a free shuttle bus system that allows people (especially tourist) to travel around KL. - Encourage more outdoor activities. - Increase walkability and reduce road space (to revitalize the site instead of causing vehicular jam) - Easily accessible and approachable - Potential waterfront development
- Dormant site - Noise of vehicles as site faces main road and also nearby construction site - Heavy traffic during before/after school hours - 0 attraction on site - Lacks interesting activities.
SWOT Threat : - Pollution caused by public transport and - cars and river - Lack of surveillance - Maintenance problem

OPPOTUNITIES
The site, although largely abandoned, still belongs to the governing body. It may be difficult to get approval as the building program may not sit well with the site.
The River of Life Public Outreach Programme (ROL-POP) mooted by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia plans to rejuvenate Klang River in the next few years, and the artiste colony could contribute the riverside as a major landmark and gateway
Site is surrounded by the institutional and residential zones. It is accessible to a large
Site is surrounded by the institutional and residential zones. It is easily accessible to a large crowd of people. The program will help activate the day and night influx, thus bringing it in higher economic value. Only then, entrepreneurs, investors, and stakeholders will develop in this area. Increment in development leads to higher job opportunities, which in turn, can revive the existing business economy
The local community have lost touch with the beauty of the performing arts due to the lack of exposure and facilities.
The site might have the chance of rejuvenating once the landmark is completed. Ideally, the program will provide a complete facility to aid the local people, allowing them to enjoy the process of the video production, and thereby creating a creative and innovative community
Program Viability Traditional Music and Dance Performing Art Centre The proposed building for this Architectural Design Project is a Malaysian Traditional Music and Dance Performing Art Centre in a modern context to bridge the gap between the dying tradition and the modern/current generation. This performing arts center could serve as a community center not only to rejuvenate the site and bring back the site’s identity but to also provide a live, work and play space. The live, work and play setup do not just allow visitors to watch performances but to educate them more about Malaysian traditional music and dances. This center will also help promote the nearby Menara KL and also the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve – which is two of many tourist spots in Kuala Lumpur. The Jalan Ampang site lacks an interaction space whereby students, visitors and tourists could come together to share and learn from one another as a community. The site provides a strong heritage trail and through my program, it can bridge the generation gap between the older generation with the younger generation. The younger generation could use this opportunity to learn from the older generation to gain knowledge, understanding, wisdom and proper practicing methods. And by doing so, it helps bring live not to the site again but to also give the traditional culture of music and dance a breath of fresh air.
Weaknesses : to re-introduce traditional music and All in all, this site is a strategic location dance as a mean to bring back the site’s identity without forgetting the roots - Dormant site of Malaysia as it fall between the heritage trail. Research and development, internet, mobile use
The local community consists mainly of the younger generation who are usually very tech-savvy.
The internet has massive networking and research potential. With it, large number of people from different places can be reached out online, and this in turn will help in the exposure of the programme to the general public
Law and Policies
Development of such project between the river bank and main road requires the attention of laws, building act and regulations.
Building Setback lines set in The Uniform Building By-Laws should be implemented during the design stage of the project.

1.1.0 DESIGN ANALYSIS 1.01.0 DESIGN DESIGN ANALYSIS ANALYSIS DESIGN ANALYSIS Design Suitability The design derived from its linear site and the axis of old and new KL. The decision to remain the existing buildings around the site was a tough choice because of its tight open spaces and voids. But to further enhance it’s meaning of “bringing back the site’s identity” and to promote the building design as a traditional music and dance center, such choices had to be made. The design relates to old and new KL in the simplest way. Old KL, which is the front elevation, is kept simple and geometrical and new KL, which is the back elevation, was design in such a way that it breaks the flat existing back elevation to give in s sense of modern design. The orientation of the building faces southeast and captures the traveling wind that blows up north, enabling natural ventilation is most of the spaces. Open courtyards on both ground floor and third floor would not be a problem under the hot sun as the tall existing buildings behind the site and the dense forest of Bukit Nanas acts helps shade the buildings most of the time.
Key Features The site and the heritage trail of Kuala Lumpur has strengthened the idea of building a Traditional Music and Dance Performing Arts Centre to revitalize the site and bring back the dying tradition as a reminder (much like the heritage trail). The design is much like an extension of the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve and the city of Kuala Lumpur. While programmatic and cultural needs extend into the building from the heritage trail, the landscape continues into the building as air, light and gardens. While some visitors are reading in the open library area, other visitors may be enjoying an exhibition in the open park in the background. Also at the same time, there are opportunities for workshops or classes to extend into the open roof garden so the activities are always close to nature. In addition, the building will enhance the circulation network of the heritage and tourist trail through the ease of accessibility from old KL to new KL, or along the river promenade to prevent the site from being dormant again. And because the site is strategically placed within these trails, this Traditional Music and Dance Centre would be a place for everyone to gather to learn, experience and share the beauty of the Malaysian culture to the locals and nonlocals once more.
Program Spatial Planning According to the design strategy and SWOT analysis, the building blocks are categorized as Mind, Spirit and Body. The Mind block is where visitors come to learn and understand more about the culture, which consists of: a Open community space, an Archive room, an Open concept library, Music studios and Dances studios with a long liner roof garden. The main block is the Spirit block whereby performances come to live. It consists of a Gallery hall, Auditorium, Café bar and a Theater. And, the Mind block, which is a private block, where educators and artists have their own rooms to stay, small café to enjoy their meals and a gym/yoga space to maintain their health and keep their body fit.

1. DESIGN ANALYSIS 1.0 2.0 DESIGN RISK ANALYSIS ANALYSIS 1.0 DESIGN ANALYSIS Success Criteria It is a goal or aim that is measurable and achievable. Every individual project seeks to produce a high quality outcome within the minimum period of time based on a certain set of criteria. A successful criteria will only be met when the project is handed over with high quality within the time frame. The quality of the project is measured by the durability and safety of the sub- and super structures. It is essential to balance out the 3 criteria which is Quality, Cost and Time that will be looked at during a project to prevent wastage of time during a project operation.
Quality The success criteria for this project is the functions and performances of the traditional culture. The performing arts center could sustain itself by attracting visitors, tourists, educators and performers as they would help the building be always functional. Also, a good quality building will also help reduce the maintenance cost and therefore, be kept at bay.
Cost The project cost is secondary in the success criteria. The use of locally available materials helps reduce the cost for importing or transportation. The budget would then be sufficient enough to produce a high enough quality for the workmanship. Avoiding wastage of materials also help in minimising the cost required. Time Time management is equally important to ensure the success of the building. The expected construction time will be 10months. Expected starting date is July 2015 and the Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) should be issued and received by clients or stakeholders no later than May 2016.
