MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management
The beautiful city of Tampere, in the industrial heart of Finland, Tampere University of Technology welcomes you to pair your engineering degree with a management graduate program. Be heard, be inspired and feel the change in the student-oriented and motivating university culture here. The industrial engineering and management program in a multi-cultural environment gives you an insight into the dynamics of international sales and sourcing. It shows you a landscape picture of the whole business, only a fragment of which you have so far focused on as an engineer. It is cross functional and interdisciplinary and it flows and touches upon a variety of courses. No need to worry about the change in field of study, there are courses that build the foundations. Based on that foundation, with courses in strategy, supply chain, finance and marketing or leadership and sales, you go on to develop an understanding of business. Learn in classes, learn in guilds, and learn on campus. Bounce ideas talking to the professors, come across them working on cases or exchange them drinking coffee. When learning is fun it just happens, effortlessly but effectively. More information: www.tut.fi/admissions Application period: 1 December - 27 January

Dear reader, Concerns about the environmental impact of urban freight transport are growing along with population density and urban congestion. Thankfully, awareness of the need for sustainable urban development is also on the rise and the coordination of traffic and logistics is receiving greater attention. Yet, the need is urgent for more efficient and effective freight transport systems that not only address costs but also fully tackle environmental issues such as noise, air pollution, vibration and visual intrusion.

President’s Speech
Dear Reader, The focus topic of this issue of the ESTIEM Magazine is City Logistics, which aims to support the economic and social development of these dense urban areas through smart freight transportation solutions. With most of the world’s population growth due to happen in cities, City Logistics has to do this while taking immense responsibility for the sustainability and future of our planet. To take this revolutionary step forward with City Logistics one needs strong leadership skills to make the fundamental change to approaching the topic, but also experts in the fields on logistics, management and engineering. Conveniently enough, the industrial engineering and management students that make up the ESTIEM network happen to combine both. While large-scale changes are happening all around us in the world, ESTIEM also has its work cut out in evolving to match the changing needs of industrial engineering

Did you know our technology generates a quarter of the world’s hydropower? We’re not just world experts at getting sustainable energy out of water, we’re also extremely proficient at sustaining the career interest of ambitious professionals. You’ll be joining a multinational company that started operating in hydropower in 1867, harnessed the Niagara Falls in 1903, brought hydropower to China in 1910 and, more recently, supplied two of the world’s largest hydro projects: Three Gorges in China and Itaipu in Brazil. Voith Hydro is one of four divisions that make Voith one of Europe’s largest family-owned businesses, operating in over 50 countries. For a world-leading career with us, visit our website today.
We offer:
Basic and Pre-Study Internships
Spaces for Student Trainees
We offer technical foundation and prestudy internships in production or vocational education at Heidenheim, Crailsheim, Munich and Rutesheim.
There are excellent opportunities for former trainees who are then encouraged to take on further tasks in their respective areas. Sometimes we also need fairly prompt assistance with ongoing projects. Here we offer good students an opportunity to gather valuable experience and assist those in charge in their daily tasks or with existing projects.
Practical Semesters, University Internships and Voluntary Internships During your internship you are part of a team and assume project responsibility. During this time you will learn how to translate your academic knowledge into concrete tasks and acquire practiceoriented skills. You will receive guidance from experienced experts and senior managers. Your internship with us usually lasts 3 to 6 months and can be completed both in technical and commercial areas.
Final Dissertations at Voith Many students already have completed their final dissertation at Voith and made a valuable contribution to our company. You coordinate internal issues with us and your academic supervisor and then elaborate on them in a scientific and practice-oriented manner.

The research team adopted a technique, called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), to optimally assign “weights” to each of the indicators, thus giving a truer picture of each city performance while addressing concerns over the possible subjective choosing and weighting factors in the model. DEA, first introduced by Charnes et al. (1978), is a linear programming technique for comparing the efficiency of a relatively homogeneous set of organizational decision making units, such as schools, hospitals or business firms, in their use of multiple resources (inputs) to produce multiple outcomes (outputs). These cities demand more attention when a global perspective of European cohesion is at stake. The main contribution of this work is to enable benchmarking in such a way that it becomes possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each city, as well as the peers with similar features to the city under assessment. These peers provide examples of good practices that other cities with worse performance should follow to improve the inhabitants’ well being and promote sustainable development. For example, for the city of Milan, this work indicated that examples of best practices could be found in Frankfurt am Main for economic indicators (related to employment rate) and environment indicators (number of days with ozone concentration below 120 μg/m3), Helsinki for education (percentage of children aged 0-4 in day care) and Tartu for social aspects (percentage of households living in own dwellings). We would envision that this research could promote the sharing of best practices

FOCUS TOPIC The truth is that infrastructure built of stuff pollutes (it pollutes the mind as well as the planet) and also decays. It doesn’t last. Nor does it satisfy. All over that high tech region of Europe the infrastructure is ageing and in serious need of replacement, not merely with the same again but with something less polluting and more sustainable and at the same time more effective in supporting the things that do matter. Let us look at these two problems separately, because the first is a technical problem but the second is a mindset problem. Firstly let us look at the infrastructure of energy supply itself, and we might focus on the supply of electricity, as a particularly desirable form of energy that requires a lot of infrastructure to provide it where you want it. When we are thinking about energy supply there is one simple number that should guide our thinking. It takes the investment of energy to produce energy for us to consume. Do we get out more energy than we invest – i.e. is it a positive return on the energy investment – or is it in fact an energy sink not an energy source? Where the problem has come from is that digging up and burning fossil fuel consumes a lot of energy, most of which is contained in the fuel, and the majority of this goes up the chimney at the power station and turns into pollution, and what you get as electricity is at best about 35% of the energy that you put in as fuel, i.e. it is not a positive energy return. In the 1970s, after the first oil price shock, the UK began to explore if it could extract energy from the energy flows in nature and it initiated a research programme looking to see whether we could extract the energy in sea waves.
I ran the largest of the UK wave
energy research teams – there were several – and we established that it was possible to do it, the engineering was difficult but possible, but we stopped the research programme in the early 1980s because we all kept doing the energy payback-on-investment calculations (these are in fact easy to do) and none of us could make them positive. We were making projections of full mass production, installation and operation of gigawatt-sized power stations off the west coast of Scotland and it absorbed so much material and energy to build and maintain the necessary infrastructure that, over its lifetime, you got out less energy than you put in and it made no sense to do it. Wind energy was a much better option and through the 1980s I was one of the people who developed the core technology of the wind turbine rotors that you see on wind turbines today. Importantly, if you choose

Moving around in the city: Urban Transportation and City Logistics The world-wide urbanization trend is at full speed. Based on OECD estimates, in 1950, world urban population was only 50% of the total population (OECD, 2003). For the first time in 2009, world urban population has surpassed rural population, and there is no evidence of slowing yet (UN, 2009). By 2050, urban population is expected to increase by 84% to a 6.3 billion from 3.4 in 2009. that, current traffic regulations are no longer sufficient

What I experienced this year was simply put: A leap out of my comfort zone, all the way to the “place where the magic happens”. Conversing with truly remarkable people, young and old; developing others and myself; pushing the organisation towards higher grounds; all whilst having the best year of my life. This, has only been possible because of ESTIEM and most importantly because of its brilliant members. I am confident that I’ll treasure this experience that shaped and developed me so much for the rest of my life. At this point I can only thank you for giving me the opportunity to accomplish what I had envisioned, to fail and grow and become the person I am today, to gain the confidence to believe that with the right mindset and attitude it’s certainly possible to achieve things that seem today to be impossible. See you somewhere in Europe, be it in a month, a year or during the next anniversary!

A few years back, I would never have imagined this. Well, who of you did? It became normal to sit down with people from all over Europe for whatever reason; is it a discussion about our organization, sports, tradition or simply about the food you are just having. In my time in ESTIEM, I have experienced what it means to be European, what you can simply learn from being with international people. It has been an incredible experience. I can only thank you all for being as you are and ESTIEM for giving me this opportunity. Having friends from this many different backgrounds and still always finding that one thing in common, this mindset, this attitude. This is ESTIEM Spirit.

Thanks to ESTIEM I always feel at home wherever I am in Europe and I truly found a place where I belong. ESTIEM helped me grow as a person in so many ways and I am so grateful for all the memories and opportunities I have been offered. So as my board year is coming to an end I can easily say that I could not be happier with everything I have done these past years and a lot of it has to do with all the people I have met through the years and how they motivated me to stay active and do more. I want to thank everyone who has been there at every event, Skype chat and email conversation cause without you I would not be who I am today. It is with an amazing feeling that I handover the ESTIEM torch to the new generation of ESTIEMers, my time is over but I know that ESTIEM is in great hands and that you will all keep the ESTIEM spirit alive. Because that is the most important thing we have, and it is what keeps the ESTIEM torch burning, so may that torch shine as bright in the hearts of others as it has in my heart.

When I started the Board year I had not been around in the central level as long as my co-boardies and other active ESTIEMers. I was not familiar with everything but I was eager to learn more about ESTIEM and get to know the amazing people working hard in it. I believe that through my position related work and curiosity towards unknown I have now gained a very deep understanding and appreciation towards all functions of ESTIEM which has made me love this organisation more than ever before. I cannot describe in words how much I feel I have grown as a person during this year. I owe this experience not only to my co-boardies but also many other wonderful friends I have had the chance to meet and work with. President Undoubtedly the most unique and intense year of my life so far is, unfortunately, soon reaching its end. It feels as if I’ve been active in ESTIEM for ages, even before I first entered university, but at the same time it feels like I’ve only just gotten started. It’s been a blast having the opportunity to be at the forefront of such an exciting student network, and witnessing the shared passion that all ESTIEMers have for ESTIEM. I took a moment to reflect on the crazy year so far during a night bus ride from Helsinki airport to my hometown after a five-week long ESTIEM travel trip, and I found myself both shocked and confused. I’ve learned and experienced so much over the past year, met so many new and different people, and found myself in situations so far out of my normal comfort zone. How can one organisation, that first trip to Europe you make, change your life so much? Thank you for giving me this opportunity to experience new things, travel, develop, try out new ideas, fail, learn and grow. It has been truly an unforgettable year, and I look forward to seeing the next generations of ESTIEMers taking on these challenges and opportunities!

Now I can describe the year living with the thoughts of Council Meeting as a journey of rises and falls, problems and solutions, cries and laughs, dreams and reality. Was it hard? Yes! ESTIEM Consultancy Initiative: Filling up the open space In ESTIEM there is a lot of open space for ideas of any kind. Almost everything can be implemented and tested within the safe boundaries of the network. One of those things is the idea of an ESTIEM Junior Consultancy. This idea has been sticking around in the network for quite a long time but has never been put into action before. Early in 2015, during one of the parking lot sessions of the Corporate Relations Committee Coordination Meeting, a new Initiative, the Consultancy Initiative, was finally founded to bring this idea to life. Its potential is especially great within ESTIEM because in consulting, people are confronted with some kind of problem that has to be properly analysed and solved. We, as ESTIEM, are a network of differently acting and differently thinking people from a lot of different cultures and backgrounds. This means that our consulting teams will have lots of different perspectives and approaching angles on the problem, guaranteeing the best possible solution for any kind of problem. In 2015, ESTIEM had the chance to be represented at the Annual Conference and Expo of the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE) in the US between May 30th and June 2nd. On the final evening, the Honors and Awards Dinner was held and during the last day, the Student Track took place with several student-targeted presentations, including the ESTIEM presentation. One of the main goals of the Annual Conference was to promote the connections and network between IE professionals and students and this was supported by the Expo with several universities and companies as exhibitors. Students could ask questions from company and university representatives throughout the conference which could mean a great support with the educational and career planning of the student participants. A year and a half afterwards, I got so motivated to followup on this idea that I became the next LPI leader, and I had a clear goal: people had to know about the Language Programme Initiative! How could it be that it took me a while to learn about this?! I decided to build a team who would be ready to work beside me and show the whole network that the idea was good. During the training they covered the following topics: Basic Case Solving, Team Building, Presentation skills and Time management. We had quite amazing 4 teams: Unicorns, Bestiemers, TT360 and Timemachines. Teams solved 3 cases during days and sometimes even during the evenings. Then they had the final case where we had external jury members from Accenture to experience the real TIMES competition environment. Throughout the week, participants had chance to get direct feedback from our experienced trainers. We all stayed together in a hostel in Ortakoy (a lovely seaside area near the Bosporus) so, especially the first day, it was awesome to see how teams continued to think about the case in the evening when we return the hostel. They worked on it until midnight, and could ask their questions to trainers whenever they needed. During the evenings, we had a lot of fun by enjoying Turkish food and drinks. We went to one of the most fancy night
club in Istanbul called Sortie in the first evening. On the second day we spent our night singing songs together in a Karaoke Bar. The other day we had an awesome Gala dinner with an amazing Bosporus view. The last night, we had the international night to end this great event by getting the know more of our cultures for the one last time. This event was one of the best events ever for me in ESTIEM since you can fully feel the ‘work hard, play hard’ spirit. It was undoubtedly amazing to see how both participants and the trainers were working so hard during the days and sometimes even during the evenings and still could play really hard each day. Also, it was really amazing to see the improvement of the participants. There was indeed a huge difference between their first case solving performance and the last one. (At least the last one took 4 hours for them to solve while the first one took 11 hours, but they really learnt so many things in the first day.) Presentations of each team really got better significantly day by day.

TIMES Training Event is one of the most promosing and beneficial event in ESTIEM. As ESTIEM is organising the largest pan-European case study competition for Industrial Engineering and Management students: TIMES, it finally initiated this prestigious and highly acclaimed training event to train the future case solvers and to prepare them to this Europewide case study competition back in the year 2012. The very first TIMES Training event has been succesfully organised by Local Group Como and Milan with its 17 participants from 12 different Local Groups. Then Local Group Hamburg, Vaasa, Novi Sad took the lead respectively and organized the TIMES Training Event. This year, it is time to Local Group Istanbul-Yildiz to take the challenge and organize this event for case study enthusiasts. The main goal of this event is to see the TIMES Training Event Graduates as higly well qualified case solvers in Europe. Our proffesional trainers, and experienced ESTIEMers: Max Steinmetz and Aaro Kauppinen are doing their bests in every single TIMES Training Event since the very beginning, to achieve this goal.
After all this experience and knowledge they gained, I hope to see each of them in Semi Finals or even in the Final. Thanks to the lovely organisers of LG Istanbul-Yildiz, espically our awesome project leader Cansu Tekdemir for making this event amazing. Also, thanks to the cotrainers Busra Kazanci and Alaz Ata Senol for their effort and all the work they did during the event. And of course a huge special thanks goes to our amazing trainers: Max Steinmetz and Aaro Kauppinen for taking part in these training events from the very beginning and for sharing their knowledge, experiences and their ESTIEM spirit with new generations! Last but not least, I would like to thank my fellow TIMES Project Leader Alara Gülgör for helping me a lot during the preparation process of the event. I think TIMES Training event has a huge importance for our network considering its concept and I strongly recommend everyone to not miss this opportunity that ESTIEM provides them and to join one in their ESTIEM journey! ■

This recent activity on the local level has payed off as our board for 2015-2016 has 9 members and 7 of them are in year 2 or 3(out of 5) and completely new to ESTIEM. The new board is excited and full of new and fresh ideas on how to continue to grow LG Karlstad. Look out Europe!
Soon after we unfortunately lost the support from our university that we received in the beginning – e.g. being sponsored for CM Eindhoven. At this time LG Karlstad was probably at its lowest point, with discussions being held on whether we should disband or keep going. Fortunately we opted for option number two and in the fall we attended both the Nordic ReCoM and CM Portugal where we obtained observership status! We made a conscious decision to focus on maintaining an active and enthusiastic group of core members. So instead of expanding and recruiting too much we chose to recruit the few people that on their own heard about ESTIEM and expressed an interest in joining. In the spring of 2014 – in addition to attending Nordic ReCoM and CM Istanbul – we arranged our first official

Entrepreneurs made in ESTIEM In August/September 2015 the second edition of the Summer Entrepreneurship Training (SET) took place in Istanbul-Bogazici, Warsaw and Madrid. By participating in SET, students from different countries get the unique opportunity to learn and experience entrepreneurship. The result after three weeks of hard work are great business ideas with a sustainable business plan pitched in front of a jury, a unique lifetime experience and a great group of friends.
Rebekka Nagel
LG Dortmund
Nowadays being an entrepreneur is almost perceived as just another job title. Even though this might sound strange at first sight, looking at our fast changing world we live in with the constant need for innovative and fast adapting people who are willing to take that extra step and risk, entrepreneurship doesn’t seem to be such an unusual career path anymore. Less surprising is the fact that many universities across whole Europe embrace entrepreneurship as a major field of their study programmes. Unfortunately, there are still too many universities not taking initiative regarding this hot topic. So, ESTIEM gives students the opportunity to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. businessbooster is the ESTIEM project which guides students through all faces of entrepreneurship and with the recently ending second edition of the Summer Entrepreneurship Training, a new generation of potential ESTIEM entrepreneurs was born. The questions most frequently asked by the participants to seasoned entrepreneurs during the training were: “What do you believe entrepreneurs are made of?”; “What does it take to become an entrepreneur?”. A combination of all answers have been summed up for you. These are 5 main characteristics most successful entrepreneurs have in common.
Interview with Felix Limper, first Project Leader of SET What does entrepreneurship mean to you? For me, entrepreneurship means opportunities, it means inspiration, and it also means doing what you like, because you know it’s the right thing to do. I like the entrepreneurial mind-set, this attitude to make things come true. You were the first Project Leader of SET, what was it like developing a completely new ESTIEM event? When Natalia, the businessbooster project leader back then, gave me this task in 2013 to organise SET, I just thought “Okay, this sounds crazy. Let’s just try it!” I knew that if this works out it will be a mind-blowing experience for many people. After all, we realised the demand within the network and today I am glad to see entrepreneurship getting more and more acknowledged, also in the study programmes of plenty of universities across Europe.

1. Perseverance and Passion “Timing, perseverance, and ten years of trying will eventually make you look like an overnight success.” - Biz Stone, Co-Founder of twitter Do you believe in yourself, your ideas, and are passionate about the things that you do? Building a business is everything but easy, it requires a lot of work, time and commitment. On your way you will face many challenges. You will meet people who tell you that your idea will never work out. Maybe you have problems finding an investor and bureaucracy can be a real setback. Nobody will believe in your business idea if you do not believe in it yourself. Nobody will love your product if you are not passionate about it yourself. An entrepreneur does not give up easily and perseveres until he finally finds success. 2. Pursuit of Independence “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” Steve Jobs, Founder of apple You hate it when other people tell you what to do, how and when to do it? You prefer making decisions yourself and are not afraid to take responsibility? As an entrepreneur you can be your own boss. Nobody will
What do you think about the development of SET ? I am happy to see the 2nd edition of SET being pulled off. The educational content was impressively developed this year! In my eyes, this is for sure going into the right direction. There is still a lot of potential that we have to unlock in order to make SET the event it can be, but I am confident that we will achieve this soon. How do you see SET in 5 years from now? In 5 years SET will be an event that every year 100 people apply for, an event that you can attend for a low participation fee and the origin of actual start-ups that make a change in the world. Of course that is dreaming. But let’s dream! Dreams push reality further. Why would you recommend ESTIEMers to join SET2016? SET is an amazing experience. Get educated on entrepreneurship, experience three different countries and their culture. And, something many people do not think of beforehand, meet inspiring people from all over the world and become friends. If you are searching for a challenge, apply for SET2016 and go on a journey you’ll never forget.
INSIDE ESTIEM stop you from implementing your crazy ideas, but you will need to take full responsibility as well. 3. Not afraid of failure and willing to take risks “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.” Henry Ford, Founder of Ford Motor Company Did you know that 90% of all new products fail? (The Startup Owner’s Manual by Steve Blank, Bob Dorf ) Chances are, if you never tried to start-up a business you will fail on your first attempt. Encouraging, isn’t it? Many first-time entrepreneurs are too optimistic and create products without a market. The experience of failure gives you a more realistic attitude, and your chances to establish a successful business will increase with every time you try. Many Venture Capitalists trust in experience, so don’t be afraid asking the same VCs for financial support of your second business again, your chances might have even gotten better. If you want to start a business just go for it, don’t think too much about the odds, get your first failure out of the way and learn from your mistakes to be more successful with the next try.
Interview with Umutcan Duman, participant of SET14 What was the most important thing that you learned? The most important thing I’ve learned is working with people from different cultures and different backgrounds, it gives you inspiration and thousands of different perspectives. Actually, we worked on my startup during SET. And thanks to our team and the continuous help of our mentor, finally I’ve realized that this business should be stopped as there are huge competitors doing this business for free. There would be no way to make money from this market. Which impact did the participation in SET2014 have on your life? Well after SET2014 I’ve decided to stop my current startup as there is no global potential. But there was another idea that has been developed during SET. After SET I got the concept and tried to implement it in the Turkish market. Finally, I now have a company in METU
4. Extrovertive, energetic and healthy “Entrepreneurs: The only people who work 80 hour weeks to avoid working 40 hour weeks.” Lori Geiner, Founder of For your eyes only inc. As an entrepreneur, you can not simply take a day off if you do not feel that well, as your competition won’t take a break either. Often you will find yourself working day and night; a strong immune system is crucial. Furthermore, you should enjoy talking with people and be energetic. You will need to shamelessly sell yourself and your business idea. 5. Being a leader and team player “Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position.” Brian Tracy, Author Starting a business alone is nearly impossible, and leading a team through the ups and downs of establishing a business is surely no easy task either. You will need CoFounders and/or a skilled team that you can rely on. ■
Technopark, and we even got government funding for the business. We are now in the selling stage. That is the best impact that I could have imagined before participating SET Which challenges did you face during the event? During SET, our mentor helped us a lot. The biggest challenge for any team is going out there and talking with customers. He pushed us to do it very well and it was a really important experience for us. That put us out of our comfort zone, and when you expand your comfort zone you feel great! To whom would you recommend participating in SET? SET is a very well organized event for engineers, designers, business developers, actually for everyone who wants to be an entrepreneur, or at least get an entrepreneurial mindset. You don’t have to be an entrepreneur, however, thinking and acting like an entrepreneur brings lots of value for you and the company that you work for. I believe SET is totally a “work hard, play hard” process! never forget.

INSIDE ESTIEM like we were the European Parliament. It was a whole European week in Eindhoven, since besides the CM, there were hundreds of students from all over Europe anyhow, because there were lots of events going on. In Eindhoven we used to have one party building where all the student organisations had their places, their bar and things, and I remember that the whole building was just filled with students from all over Europe. We had our party at one of the student associations. One of the things I really remember is how all the student groups had their own habits, especially the Scandinavians. They had these suits with all the stickers, which was a new thing for us. We were just having a wonderful time. At one point, people would throw beer across the bar and everybody was dancing to the music, clapping with their hands. It was a big mess, but it was a lot of fun! What are your most proud accomplishments in ESTIEM and in life? I think that we managed to start something that was to last. I remember that we talked about who our members would be. We said that it would be better if we used the existing infrastructure so that you have local groups that can last after students are graduated. We wanted to make sure that we were creating something that was built to last. When I was in Finland in 2010, I was like “Wow!”. It was amazing to see that it was still to last. I think I feel most proud that we managed to do that, and I’m very proud of all the people who came after. Can you imagine that every three years all the students have changed? It’s amazing!

In terms of Public Relations, the Project is keeping on a sustainable and consistent campaign in Social Media Channels, especially on Facebook. Besides, the external Europe3D web-page has been updated and redesigned to be more user-friendly. The renamed External Relations and Finance Team has contacted a big number of external associations. For this process, an information brochure was created. The team is now in the process of contacting companies, European institutions and looking for cooperation possibilities.
Training Committee As one of the newest committees, the Training Committee has had another half year full of development and improvement. Let’s dive into what has been happening in the several aspects of TC. The last edition of the Local Responsible Forum took place in May in Porto. This event came to be a great success through hard work of the organisers and coordinator. We are currently working on the LR Forum for the next year, where we plan to have 2 events in order to

INSIDE ESTIEM TIMES With the election of the project leader and the Final location, Ilmenau, TIMES Project’s 2015/2016 edition had a quick start after Council Meeting Baltics. 8 Semi Final Locations - Ankara-METU, Darmstadt, IstanbulITU, Karlsruhe, Lyon, Munich, Oulu and Poznan have been chosen in the first Coordination Meeting which was a joint event with Corporate Relations Committee hosted by Local Group Darmstadt. In that Coordination Meeting, all the resources have been updated, new action points found and immediately implemented afterwards. Some new strategies for long existing issues such as “External Participants” and “Tournament Structure” have also been created , as well as a new Public Relations Strategy. Currently, Central Team is working hard on both Local Qualification and Semi Final/Final support. SF/Final Organisers will come together in the second Coordination Meeting of TIMES in Grenoble with the Central Team to discuss their events, critical issues of TIMES and to have some trainings. Besides those, TIMES now has a strong Corporate Relations Strategy with a high collaboration with Corporate Relations Committee. The external pages are being updated in terms of design and content. Moreover, TIMES Local Group Survey had %93 answer rate from Local Groups and TIMES Team created individual strategies towards each LG according to that survey.
Vision After CM Riga, where the new project leader and topic “Materials - Key Drivers for Innovation” were elected, Vision had a fresh start: The goals for this year’s series were set and the central team with new members was formed. The summer has passed with lots of organizational work to give the best support to Vision event organisers. At the first Coordination Meeting, organised by LG Istanbul-Yildiz, 12 team members have chosen 11 LGs to organise a Vision event in 2015-2016 and worked on Vision’s long term, CR, PR as well as Knowledge strategies. The second meeting gathered local organisers in Novi Sad and gave them the chance to get useful information, tips & tricks and exchange ideas with each other to organise a successful event. Besides the CoMs the most important achievements were the new design of the company brochure and t-shirt, improvement of central documents for organisers, change of application system for Vision events and feedback forms. Join the Vision the events and the team to become a Visionaire because you need VISION to see! BrainTrainer The BrainTrainer team has put a lot of effort in developing the project further. After a very productive Coordinational Meeting in Warsaw and an exciting celebratory event in Budapest, the whole concept was improved. The portal has been updated with the new updated mission, vision and values. One of the biggest changes within the project is the implementation of topic based events, so that now all the training events

research on finding new public funding support programmes all around Europe. The committee is also working on new team structure as well as on the promotion of the work done and of the grants opportunities. The members of the committee successfully delivered several trainings at big ESTIEM events such as LR Forum, PR-CR School etc., in order to raise the awareness on how to apply and get your events granted. Currently, the committee is working on making professional videos which will help ESTIEMers during their preparations on applying for public funding. Last but not least, the committee is growing constantly and we are happy to have motivated members who want to contribute and help the network get the needed financial support.
During these last six months Academic Days has proved that it has come to stay! Not only we had two successful events, but also our Coordination Meeting, which was held in Barcelona. There we agreed on important matters: discussed the current concept of Reflection Sessions and decided on our future events, including our first-ever Industry Days (a new concept more focused on the technological expertise of a country) and four more really promising events. Our PR Strategy is stronger now, as we are taking advantage of Facebook to raise awareness among our potential applicants. We plan to continue creating stability, increasing our promotion on both ESTIEM and other external parties. We will also re-design our internal and external page as soon as possible. INSIDE ESTIEM Corporate Relations Committee The past 6 months after Council Meeting in Riga were really busy for Corporate Relations Committee. In the middle of June, we had a great joint event with the TIMES team in Darmstadt to re-evaluate their CR strategy and start a strong collaboration together. Another purpose of this event was also to try out the “bootcamp” concept to call some companies and visit job fairs before & after the event in order to get direct contacts with many companies, especially the hidden champions. Then, there was only one month left for our Coordination Meeting in the lovely city of Lisbon. CRC CoM in Lisbon hosted a lot of productive discussions which led us to develop many things within our committee. The Corporate Relations Committee has also taken an active role in supporting ESTIEM Local Groups & Projects in CR related issues. We have created a Local Group Support survey in order to analyze the needs of ESTIEM Local Groups
Financial and Legal Committee After the busy Council Meeting Baltics, with the acceptance of the changes in the Internal Regulations and Statutes for the change of the board year, the Financial and Legal Committee (FLC) has not been resting. During that Council Meeting (CM) the requirement for Local Groups to be legal entities was also brought up and since then the FLC has been working on the verification of the legal status of all the Local Groups of ESTIEM. During the Coordination Meeting in Tallinn, which takes place in the end of October, the first results of this research will be examined and the FLC is on track to reach the deadline of the intermediate conclusions at CM Austria (Autumn 2015) and the final conclusions at CM Porto (Spring 2016). Next to this the FLC kept checking budgets of ESTIEM events that are organised by Local Groups. This budget checking keeps proving its usefulness. Last but not least a new Leader has been appointed for the committee to guide it starting from CM Austria.
in the field of CR and help them accordingly. Other than that, Corporate Relations Committee updated the design & content of Corporate Brochures, several CR BPDs, also launched a new mentoring system within the committee in order to make it easier for new members to adapt the working system of the Corporate Relations Committee. Last but definitely not least, thanks to the great collaboration we had with ITC, we finally launched our Career Centre, where ESTIEM members can easily find international job offers, study opportunities as well as get career advices from the Knowledge Centre in the fields such as CV writing, job interviews and many more. Apart from all these works going on in the CRC, we of course have been in contact with many companies and universities to get them into the ESTIEM pool, and we are happy to share with you that we established fruitful partnerships thanks to the great work of CRC wolfies! We, as CRC Family, have done a lot together in this short 6-month term; but we still have a lot to succeed together for the future of ESTIEM!
Public Relations Committee Since Council Meeting Riga, the Public Relations Committee went through some changes. The Online PR Team set up the official Instagram account of ESTIEM. The implementation of a new Central PR Team emerged and started its highly important work to overlook the Public Relations activities in ESTIEM and support the PCIs while creating the first ever PR database. During the Cordination Meeting, the team created ESTIEM’s official Video Guideline, and the Video Task Group started working as a support for those who want to create videos that aim to promote ESTIEM activities. Last, but not least, the Committee got a new leader, Reka Szabo from Local Group Budapest. The Design Team operating under the committee designed 3 posters and oversaw the design of various other printed PR Materials. 60

Knowledge Management Committee After CM Baltics, KMC has been doing what it does best: capturing and storing past experiences to teach and inspire the current and future generations of ESTIEMers. BPD Task Group has been updating and creating new Best Practice Documents, including ‘How to be a Delegate’ BPD to prepare delegates of each Local Group for Council Meeting Vienna. Interactive BPD concept took one step forward as Games BPD was completed with videos to demonstrate different get-to-know games there are within the network. While Feedback System has been busy gathering feedback from participants of each ESTIEM event and awarding the best ones, the old, well-served Net Promoter Score has been updated to meet better the criteria of different types of ESTIEM events. Moreover, some radical changes have occurred within KMC as three new Task Groups have emerged and taken the Committee to uncharted waters. Academic Knowledge Task Group has cooperated with Europe3D, Vision, Academic Days and businessbooster to produce academic reports out of events and created a home for them in ESTIEM portal: Academic Knowledge Library. Local Knowledge Task Group has taken its first steps by studying different knowledge management tools available for Local Groups. First practical study was carried out as participants of KMC CoM planned a knowledge management process for LG Brussels. While opportunities have been mapped at local level, on the other hand Central Knowledge Task Group has explored the knowledge management at central level of ESTIEM. First concrete result is the handover document template designed for ESTIEM Leaders to help them in carrying out comprehensive handovers for their successors. During the past six months KMC has taken several steps to be the knowledge keeper of ESTIEM it was meant to be. As the oldest Committee we hold plenty of history, but at the same time we feel there’s still a lot to be explored. Let’s all make sure after 50 years ESTIEMers still know what ‘haka’ is and how ESTIEM song is sung! Long live knowledge!
INSIDE ESTIEM Information Technology Committee After an awesome CM at Riga, during these 6 months, the ninjas have mainly focused on improving the IT Knowledge of our network, maintaining the knowledge and improving our back-end system. We had a successful coordination meeting at Local Group Kaaaarlsruhe and awesome news: We have a new back-up and development server in Karlsruhe! Moreover, we have been working on improving our IT School concept and have a new position in team called, IT School Coordinator. With the incredible work of our IT School Ninja Carlos Aceituno from LG MADrid this year we will have 2 IT Schools ! IT School Skopje - Web Development and IT School Xanthi - Mobile Application edition. Furthermore, with the awesome work and design of Stijn Zanders, we have an awesome looking temporary external page until External Webpage Task group work on it more. We have been also working improving and maintaining our knowledge management and have been creating BPDs. Last of all, we are currently working on our Career Center on portal with CRC and continue helping ESTIEMers in every kind of IT related area. Wanna hear more ? Stay tuned and join us to be a ninja! Language Programme Initiative The LPI team showed once more how motivated and ready to develop the initiative it is! Thanks to the work of all of us, we finally made one of our dreams come true… The first language based event took place this summer, the Language Course: Let’s learn Português! We will keep working on it in order to add this new event to the possibilities of the network. Furthermore, we are mostly finalising the LPI phone App that will be available for everyone and will let any ESTIEMer have 100 sentences from any language of our network. Promotion has been one of our main focuses during these past months and we managed to spread our word all around Europe and make people aware of the opportunities of having language activities, language courses or even some games related to languages within their local events. Now we are ready to give much more to the whole organisation adding valuable services and resources, such as handouts, presentations and dictionaries for fun language learning. Social and Environmental Responsible Initiative During the last months we have been contacting organisers and local groups and now we have 5 teams in SERI: SEA Team (Social and Environmental Advisory Team), SERI Event Team, PR Team, IEM Foundation Relations team and SERI 4 Seasons Team. SERI 4 Seasons project has been started and it is going to be published really soon. Our goal is to activate as many Local Groups as possible and to spread humanitarian spirit within ESTIEM and ESTIEMers. Our PR team is helping us to show great examples. SERI Event is in progress, the concept is created, now it is time to choose the LG which would host it. SEA Team has been contacting organisers in order to give them some tips for their events. Also, we are considering collaboration with IEM Foundation and businessbooster. The whole team is working and trying to find out how should our collaboration look like. Thanks to our great team and all motivated people we will countinue working hard hoping to bring SERI to the highest level.
ESTIEM Ambassador This has been the first year of the existence of ESTIEM Ambassador. The position was created by the board 2014 in December 2014 and was implemented into the ESTIEM structure on the 1st of January 2015. During this whole year of hard work, ESTIEM External Relations have been brought to a new level. Among one of the most important achievements is the creation of all the framework documents which will establish the stability and success of ESTIEM outer connections in the future. Secondly, this year we have managed to become much closer friends with our current partners - VWI, BEST and EESTEC and are about to sign several Memorandums of Understanding to set up official partnerships with new NGOs from Europe and worldwide - EPSA, SWE and SAIIE. Thanks to the Club of 100 support, this Council Meeting you will be able to meet all of them and even more ESTIEM-friendly NGOs present at the Kuppelsaal. Moreover, 14 ESTIEMers were honored to take part in the events organised by our external partners being official ESTIEM delegates and more than 10 external participants have been hosted by ESTIEM Local Groups through the year. All in all, it was a very successful start of the new ESTIEM initiative which will hopefully glory more and more within time. Summer Academy Another unique summer has passed with wonderful memories. We had 3 Summer Academies this year; one of them was by our newest leader Saskia Harkema, the one which we’ve already familiar with was by Gregory Watson and the last one after years of memories was from Dietrich Brandt & Toon Ariens. The first Summer Academy Coordination Meeting of this year took place in the oldest Balkan city, Nis. In total we were 10 people from 6 different Local Groups. Our aim was building strategical steps for the future of the project. And good news! You’ll have the opportunity to attend the newest initiative of the project “Winter Academy” by Saskia Harkema. It’ll be about Intercultural Management and Innovation in a Globalizing World. Within the project, we’re trying about best to strengthen our connections with Summer Academy Alumnus. Our plan is organising a Summer Academy Alumni Meeting with the contribution of our Alumni Coordinator. Every year, our family is growing and we can’t believe that it has already been 15 years since the first event occurred in the United Kingdom. In order to refresh our memories from the past, Summer Academy History Book’ll be in your hands soon. Summer Academy has become many students’ common denominator to be inspiring leaders and our family is working so hard to maintain this with a new team structure. Be the change you wish to see ,join Summer Academy!

1. Thinker Route If you are one of that kind of people who is always in a search for answers, you would find them in beautiful places in front of a mountain view or in the middle of a lake breeze. Switzerland and its neighbourhood is just what you are looking for. Our brothers and sisters from LG-Zurich will even make you a little excursion for you if you ask politely. Try writing to lr.zurich@estiem.org and see what happens. Another option in Zurich would be getting a free bicycle, which you can get from the opposite side of the main train station. Take it, ride it. In summer, Zurich looks like a girl who you would fall in love with. Make your way to the lake, ride along the coast to the Lindt Chocolate Factory Store. Buy yourself as much chocolate as you can carry with you for the lowest price. Then find a place near the water, feed a swan and think. You can also start from a big city like Geneva, Lucerne, Bern or a small village and move towards the answer for the question you have been asking yourself the whole time. 62

2. Party Route This would be perfect for party animals, who can’t stay put when they hear their favorite song. At this point, everything depends on your acoustic preferences. Do you need a crowd?
