Incumbencias o lo contrario al soplido del lobo

INCUMBENCIAS O LO CONTRARIO AL SOPLIDO DEL LOBO a77 Podemos pensar la construcción de un objeto o edificio como la asociación entre un material que se transforma y un constructor que opera sobre él. ¿Cómo funcionaría esta relación si la jerarquía del par se desarma y es la lógica del material la que guía la organización del trabajo?

Como en una situación semejante a la que tuvo que enfrentar el personaje del lobo feroz en aquel célebre relato asignado al gusto infantil, el curso de nuestros intereses condujo a reiterar el desfile por las condiciones de resistencia que los diferentes materiales constructivos nos ponen por delante.

Madera, hierro y tierra conforman así una trilogía material que podría definir de manera inicial la escena vincular del trabajo desarrollado. Cada uno de ellos nos ha permitido diferentes alternativas de relación social con la construcción, modelando de esa forma el ámbito de nuestras incumbencias.

Es por esa razón que la palabra incumbencia no tiene en este caso el sentido habitual que se asigna en la esfera de la delimitación institucional a la profesión arquitectónica, como lugar de las obligaciones contraídas. Antes bien, responde a una ecuación que articula el ejercicio del placer con las disponibilidades que surgen de los mismos materiales.

We can think of the construction of an object or a building as the association between a material that is transformed and a constructor who acts on that material. What would happen if hierarchy that governs that pair were undone, and the logic of the material were to organize the work?

Like the fierce wolf in that celebrated children’s story, our interests have led us to, once again, run through the succession of construction materials and their degrees of resistance.

Our work was initially defined by a trilogy of materials: wood, iron and adobe. Each one of these materials entails different social relationships with construction, thus giving shape to the sphere of our incumbencies.

For this reason, here the meaning of the word “incumbency” differs from its normal meaning in the institutional sphere of professional architecture, where it refers to a place of contractual obligations. We use it to refer to an equation that connects the exercise of pleasure and the possibilities that the materials themselves offer.

La madera -primer estado-, posibilitó el trabajo con unidades livianas, cajas utilizadas por la industria automotriz, que definieron el programa del Plug and live System, un dispositivo que se desplaza entre la estructura genérica del catálogo y la particularidad de la factura a medida, entre nociones de la industrialización y el capricho artesanal del hobbista.

Wood –the first resistant material– made it possible to work with light units, boxes used by the automobile industry, which defined the program of the Plug and Live System. This system is a device that moves between the generic structure of the catalogue and the particular nature of custom-making, between notions of industrialization and the handicraft whim of the amateur.

Una situación semejante propició la disolución de la tradicional cadena de delegaciones del oficio arquitectónico y permitió reunir todas las fases del proceso de producción en una sola: 1 4 4 / ( C o n con v e r snuestras a r ) U R manos; relativizando por esta vía la certeza del proyecto como presuconstrucción puesto al depositar la confianza en las ocurrencias que habilita la deliberación constructiva.

A similar situation led to the dissolution of the traditional chain of command in architecture, making it possible to bring all the phases of the production process together in a single phase: construction with our hands, which served to relativize the certainty of the project as an underlying assumption and placing faith, instead, in the instances that deliberation-based construction entails.

Las estructuras metálicas -segundo estado-, expusieron una primera dificultad a la autosuficiencia con el aumento de peso y tamaño de las piezas. Pronto la tarea se convirtió en una doble acción: el llamado a la colaboración y la transformación de la deliberación en narración. Entonces, la conformación de un grupo mayor en número determinó una dinámica de trabajo en la que el argumento se llega a explicitar a través de las maniobras en el sitio y la ocupación del lugar.

With their greater weight and size, the metal structures –the second resistant material- brought on a first difficulty in relation to self-sufficiency. The task soon became twofold: the call to collaboration and the shift from deliberation to narration. A larger group determined a work dynamic in which arguments were articulated through actions taken at the site and the way that site is occupied.

Las construcciones con tierra en regiones lejanas y ambientalmente aptas para ejecutar estas técnicas -tercer estado-, promovieron otra nueva dificultad. El problema ya no estaría concentrado en las limitaciones de peso y volumen, sino en el hecho de que el material era parte del mismo lugar. La distancia como obstáculo impone una nueva transformación de las formas de comunicación entre la ciudad y la montaña. Entonces, el objeto pasó a convertirse en una pieza de delegación. Finalmente, la narración se transformó de este modo en traducción.

Deberemos asumir en medio de esta situación que nos sitúa en una condición de una gradualidad comunicativa y un esquema narrativo tan cercano al del relato de los tres cerditos, que lo contrario al soplido del lobo no es otra cosa para nosotros que aquello que representa nuestras propias aspiraciones.

Adobe constructions in distant regions that are environmentally fit for such materials and the techniques they entail –third resistant material– brought on another difficulty. The problem no longer resided in questions of weight and volume, but rather in the fact that the material was part of the place itself. Distance as an obstacle imposed another transformation in communication between the city and the mountain. So, the object became a consignment, and narration translation.

We must admit that this situation, which means gradated communication and a narrative scheme very much like the one of the Three Little Pigs, is, unlike the Wolf’s huffing and puffing, irreducibly a representation of our own aspirations.
