a tragic fairytale
E
veryone must have heard the story of the Little Mermaid. A classic fairy tale written by the famous Hans Christian Andersen and most popularized by the animated musical fantasy film produced by the Walt Disney Picture Animation in 1989. For those who are familiar with the movie adaptations, you might recall that in the end the Little Mer maid finally becomes a human and married the prince and lived happily ever after. But unfortunately, the original fable is not quite what you would have expected. The Little Mermaid visits the Sea Witch that exchanged her tongue with human legs with a condition that she would stay human if she finally gets her true love’s kiss from the prince, but here is where the tale gets twisted. In the original story, the mermaid would DIE if she failed her task and moreover, in the story humans have eternal souls while mermaids do not. Not only that, but the tragic consequence the mermaid had to bare for having graceful human legs was that with every step she takes, it would feel like she’s walking on sharp glass. She then finally met the prince but couldn’t tell him it was her that saved him because she could not speak. Taken by her beauty, the prince asked her to dance for him. And with the hopes of winning the prince’s heart, she performed her dances even though she had to endure the cruel pain. Long story short, the prince ended up marrying another that he thought saved him on that faithful night and the heartbroken Little Mermaid met her sisters that had sacrificed their lovely hair to the Sea Witch to which she told them that she could escape death and become a mermaid again if she killed the prince in his sleep with a knife. Having a pure heart, the Little Mermaid couldn’t bear to do it and dived into the sea, dissolved into sea foam, longing for an eternal soul. by Shirley Ratnasari

dtour 2015 In the midst of the hectic weeks of May with weeks filled with the ever demanding and never ending piles of LTMs and SUMMAs, the entire FMUI family took a well deserved break during the annual D’TOUR 2015; an enthralling escapade brought to you by The Department of Internal Affairs! The weekend getaway started with a road trip on Satur- The weekend getaway started with a road- day, the 16th of May, where we all drove along the extremely long and winding road to our destination at Arus Liar, Citarik. Once there, we started off with a thrill- ing game of paintball, followed by series of amusing where teams had to battle one another all the way to the top to contend for the ultimate prize. The night closed with a simple bonfire, where stories were shared, songs were sung, corn on the cob was roasted, and the spark of fireworks served as the main attraction. As a grand finale to our getaway, we started the next day with our main event, which was rafting! Coursing through the rapids in our boats, swimming along the currents, and even with the incident of a boat that went overturned; the experi- ence is certainly something one won’t easily forget.
