THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION Assemblée Nationale Programme 2012 Deadline: Monday 12 December 2011 The English-Speaking Union invites applications for its Assemblée Nationale Programme for the summer of 2012. The opportunity is available to one undergraduate currently in his or her last two years at a British university, to undertake a placement in the offices of the Assemblée Nationale in Paris. Applications are welcomed from students of all disciplines at all universities in the United Kingdom. The placement is unpaid and applicants will be required to meet their own costs. In the past students have been successful in securing funds from universities and grant making trusts. Total cost of accommodation for last year’s intern was in the region of £700. Interns should thus allocate this money plus any living expenses. The Assemblée Nationale The internship programme is run in association with ESU France, who provide interns with placements, as well support for finding accommodation. Previous interns have worked in the offices of Assemblée members such as M. Pierre Lellouche and M. Jacques Godfrian, and in the central office of the ruling party. An alumnus of the programme described it as "…a valuable experience for living in France, a fascinating insight into French politics, an exciting role in the ever shifting landscape of issues in one of Europe’s most important countries…" The programme is designed to last between six and eight weeks in the summer of 2012. Exact start and end dates during the summer may be arranged by the candidate and ESU France after selection. SELECTION PROCEDURE Candidates should e-mail an appropriately detailed CV along with a 250-word piece on why they feel they should be selected. Successful candidates in the past have been able to show that the internship will greatly assist their medium-term career goals, and many have been able to demonstrate a link between politics, in its broadest sense, and their field of study. Successful applicants in the past have come from a wide range of universities and many different disciplines. All applications must be received by 5.30pm on Monday 12 December 2011 – you will be notified by Wednesday 14 if you are being invited to interview, and interviews will take place on Friday 13 January from 10am. When possible we prefer candidates to attend interview but in exceptional circumstances we may allow an interview via skype. The interview will be conducted in English and French and candidates are expected to have an appropriate degree of fluency.
