The university officially opened with one teacher and 18 students.

KNS became the largest school in the state and the largest normal school in the country.

The school first became accredited.

The first library school west of the Mississippi was developed at KNS.

1902

ESU offered the first online Health, Physical Education, and Recreation graduate program in the world.

1996 1987

ESU began offering its first graduate Educational Administration courses via Telenet for distance students.

2001

ESU developed and offered the first and only Master of Science in Forensic Science program in the state of Kansas.

2015

ESU began offering an online M.S. in Mathematics, which is still one of only a few in the nation.

2017

ESU now offers over 29 graduate programs, 17 of which can be completed entirely online.

EXCELLENCE IN ACTION §§ ESU alumnus Greg Mickells was awarded the National Medal for Museum and Library Service for his library from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The award is the highest a library may achieve.

§§ ESU offers the only master’s in Forensic Science in Kansas. The program was developed with the input of the directors of all of the major crime laboratories in the State of Kansas and the Kansas City Metro area.

§§ SLIM student Brittany Collins interned at the National Museum of Natural History’s National Anthropological Archives, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution.

§§ Ed Eilert, a Master of Business Education alumnus and current chairman of the Johnson County Commission, was named one of Ingram’s 250 Most Powerful Business Leaders in the Kansas City Area.

§§ Pianist and ESU alumna Angel Yang won the Fifth Music Teachers National Competition from the National Music Education Department of China. §§ Instructional Design and Technology students Julie LaCombe and Milton Knopp won the Association for Educational Communications & Technology Design and Development Competition in Las Vegas. ESU IDT students have been finalists seven of the past nine years. §§ Master of Accountancy student Matt Haefele interned at the corporate headquarters of Phillips 66 in Houston, Texas , which led to a job after graduation.

§§ The Kansas School Counselor Association named Kristi Dixon its 2016-17 Outstanding School Counselor of the Year in late November. Dixon graduated from Emporia State in 2000 with a master’s in counselor education with a concentration in school counseling. §§ ESU professor and alumna Dr. Joyce Thierer was inducted into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame, Cowboy Historian category, in the Year of the Cowgirl.

LETTER FROM THE DEAN Dear Prospective Graduate Student, Thank you for your interest in graduate study at Emporia State University. The decision to engage in graduate study can be a difficult one; however, as part of your decision making process you might consider the following information: §§ Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employers will need to add nearly 2.4 million jobs requiring a graduate degree or higher between 2012 and 2022. §§ According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over the course of a lifetime, a person with a master’s degree will earn (on average) $400,000 more than those with a bachelor’s degree. Those with doctoral degrees will earn approximately $1.3 million more than those with a bachelor’s degree. Whether you are considering graduate education to further a present career, to retrain for a different career, or to embark on study towards a doctoral degree, Emporia State University is uniquely situated to meet your educational needs. We offer 29 distinct degree programs with 36 concentrations and 15 graduate certificates. Many of our programs are nationally ranked for their quality and rigor of study, and most feature small class sizes that allow students to develop professional relationships with faculty who are experts within their fields. In addition, we offer a number of different modes of study, including face to face instruction, online, and hybrid instruction that features cutting edge technology. LIBERAL ARTS & SCIENCES §§ Our graduate degree programs in Liberal Arts and Sciences not only provide you pathways toward high job placement in a wide variety of fields–including industry, writing, editing, publishing, research, teaching, music performance, the public sector, museum and archival settings, and public service—but also allow you to advance in your current career or move seamlessly into another field of your choice. §§ The Master of Science in Forensic Science degree at Emporia State is the only one offered in the state of Kansas. The program was developed with the input of the directors of major crime laboratories across Kansas to ensure that the coursework is applicable and relevant. Our program also offers an on-site crime scene investigation room and high-tech equipment to prepare students to work as scientists in criminalistics or analytical laboratories.

The Emporia State University labs and practice crime scene facilities are excellent for developing great practical skills that are relevant to the modern crime investigation field. Through this program, I had a chance to meet with practicing forensic science practitioners and potential employers. It is no doubt that after completing the program you will not only be an expert in forensic science but a wonderful leader for several future generations.

§§ The online Master of Science in Mathematics is one of only a few in the nation, offering quality, affordable education from coast to coast. The program is flexible to fit your schedule and offers emphases in applied mathematics, statistics, algebra, or analysis. §§ To help with your professional growth, our MA in history and MS in mathematics degree programs are offered online. §§ The MM in music education emphasis offers online courses during the fall and spring semesters with an optional on-site session during the summer term. §§ The MS in physical sciences offers concentrations in chemistry, earth science, physics, and physical science. The earth science concentration is offered online. §§ Our customized programs offer you many opportunities to learn by doing as you work side by side with faculty members who are active in their fields as scholars, researchers, performers, teachers, public servants, and leaders.

BUSINESS Quality curriculum, attentive faculty, and campus involvement options make attaining a graduate degree from Emporia State University’s School of Business a winning proposition. Accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, Emporia State’s School of Business boasts a designation held by fewer than 5 percent of business schools worldwide. Positioning itself for the students of the future, Emporia State offers opportunities for graduate students beyond the traditional campus setting with fully online options.

These classes have a high degree of difficulty but are impactful and applicable. I’ve had several times where I used what I learned literally right after leaving class. I have been able to apply what I’ve learned immediately at my job.

These offerings include: §§ A Master of Accountancy degree offered either exclusively online or through a combination of online and face-to-face instruction, preparing students to sit for the CPA exam in Kansas and other states. §§ A Master of Business Administration degree with concentrations in accounting and information systems. This program can be completed at the Emporia campus or completely online. §§ A Master of Business Education program updating the business knowledge and computer skills of business and computer teachers. This graduate program is offered completely online.

LIBRARY & INFORMATION MANAGEMENT School of

Information drives the new economy. The ability to effectively access and interpret that information in all its diverse formats makes the difference in crucial decisions. Utilizing both cohort-based face-to-face classroom interaction and online instruction, Emporia State’s School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) prepares specialists in the art and science of conveying and applying knowledge important for everyday decision-making—both personal and business-related.

I considered several library schools when searching for a graduate program, and ESU SLIM was definitely the right choice for me! The blended classes of online instruction coupled with weekend intensives creates a customized learning experience for the students that enables students to establish meaningful relationships with classmates and professors.

The American Library Association accredited School offers students substantial scholarships and multicultural exposure through international trips. The Master of Library Science is: §§ Two years, 36 credit hours. §§ Offered at multiple locations—Emporia; Overland Park; Portland, OR; Salt Lake City/Orem, UT; Sioux Falls, SD; and Denver, CO. §§ Offers concentrations in leadership and administration, youth services, archive studies, and informatics. The Doctor of Philosophy is: §§ A cohort-driven, blended format featuring both face-to-face and online instruction.

TEACHERS COLLEGE ESU’s Teachers College has innovative online degrees including high incidence special education, gifted special education, curriculum and instruction, early childhood unified, educational administration for both building and district leadership, instructional specialist with concentrations in elementary content, STEM, and reading specialist, teaching of English to speakers of other languages, teaching, health/physical education/recreation, and instructional design and technology. §§ ESU’s graduate programs allow you state licensure or professional credentialing as a school counselor, school psychologist, building leader (principal), district leader (superintendent), special educator (high incidence or gifted, talented, and creative), reading specialist, early childhood educator, licensed professional counselor, master’s level psychologist, art therapist, and rehabilitation counselor, or teacher of English for speakers of other languages.

I am a wife, a mother to 6 kids, and a full-time teacher, so getting my Master’s degree with the flexibility of the online courses was the only way I could achieve my goal. The TESOL Master’s Degree Program instilled in me the knowledge needed to effectively help other educators learn more in depth about what it takes to teach English Language Learners in the classroom.

§§ ESU’s graduate special education gifted education program engages in action research. You may also receive a scholarship and specialized training to help you work with underserved populations of gifted learners. §§ ESU’s early childhood unified master’s degree prepares you to work with children with or without special needs and offers two practica so you learn by doing. §§ Emporia State’s psychology programs have a state-of-the-art animal vivarium (rat lab) to support your research. §§ One-third of our clinical psychology master’s graduates pursue doctoral studies. §§ ESU’s HPER graduate program was the first completely online HPER program in the United States.
