Harry Miller’s sweet 16s twin 1113 CI V-16 Marine engines by DAVID NEWHARDT

In the early decades of the 20th Century, motor racing was growing at a rapid clip. But the competition was not limited to race tracks; water was a surface that saw plenty of speed too. In the world of water, one name was legendary – Garfield Arthur Wood. A renowned inventor and motorboat builder and racer, he was the first man to exceed 100 mph on water. A nine-time winner of the prestigious Harmsworth Trophy, he built a long line of speedboats designed to capture the Water Speed Record. Wood’s first boat as named Miss 14

MECUMMONTHLY

Detroit, but succeeding hydroplane was named Miss America. Eventually he would make ten Miss America’s, every one an exercise in advanced engineering and fearless driving. In the 1930’s, the competition between American and English efforts to claim fastest man on water was a no-holds-barred affair. The English were using Rolls-Royce “R” aero engines and the V-12’s were developing considerably more power than the Packard V-12’s that Gar Wood was using. A more powerful powerplant

was needed when luck stepped in. At the 1931 Indianapolis 500Mile race, Gar Wood met Harry Miller, and soon the two were talking engines. Miller was one of the most successful builders of race cars, and like Wood, was an enthusiastic adopter of the latest technology. Wood made clear to Miller that he needed two engines that could power a record breaking boat, and immediately contracted to have the engines designed and built as soon as possible. Miller suggested that by scaling-up the 303 V-16 engine, the result would

generate enough power to beat the English. Each engine would use a supercharger in an attempt to extract maximum power. Harry Miller returned to Los Angeles and got to work. Overall design was done by Leo Goossen, while Ev Stevenson handled the lubrication system and cylinder head work. The superchargers were designed by Walter Steele. Original displacement of the engine was 1082-cubic inches, and the aluminum block and heads used staggered cylinder banks and sidedraft ports. Like many of

the engine a bore of 4.4375-inches. The stroke was retained at 4.5-inches, giving the engine a final displacement of 1113.5-inches.

Miller engines, the vee-angle was 54 degrees, and the heads were a double overhead cam, 4-valve per cylinder design. The blowers ended up being a Roots-type, built by Schwitzer-Cummins in Detroit, and they spun at 2/3 engine speed. However, just before the overall design was finalized, racer Kaye Don raised the Water Speed Record to 110 mph, and Gar Wood, in a panic, called Miller to tell him to increase the engines’ displacement even more. The bore was enlarged by one sixteenth of an inch, giving

months after the order had been decided on. It was designed to rev to 6,500 rpm, a far cry from the 2,500 that contemporary Packard’s were turning. With the blowers at full 10 lb. boost, the engines each developed in the neighborhood of 1,800 horsepower at 6000 rpm, enough to propel U-16 Miss America VIII to 104 mph. Gar Wood soon sold the engines, but kept the superchargers. The Millers would be installed in other race boats, while Miss America VIII would be fitted with a pair of

The first 1113 engine was lit off on August 25, 1931, less than two

Packard engines. Years would pass, and after 70 years apart, the hull of Miss America VIII and the twin 1113 Miller V-16 engines were reunited. While they currently don’t wear the original superchargers, the blowers have been located and are owned by Miss America VIII’s owner. The most powerful Miller engines, Miss America VIII and an impressive collection of original parts are going across the Mecum Auction block in Kissimmee, Florida in January, 2012. Anything related to Harry

Miller is significant to racing history and endeared by vintage racing enthusiasts everywhere. The Harry Miller Club will host its 18th annual Miller Meet at the Milwaukee Mile July 6-7, 2012. The Vintage Indy Car Event will commemorate the Centennial of the Vanderbilt Cup and Grand Prize races held in Milwaukee in 1912. Vanderbilt Cup and Grand Prize race cars will be featured as well as the usual full Vintage Indy Car program. M

FLEXING TO BE THE FIRST

Is there a clear answer to the question of the origin of what is referred to as the Muscle Car? Let’s review some real contenders from the post WWII US automakers. Oldsmobile offered it’s new OHV 303ci V-8 for 1949 in the base model and called it the Rocket 88. This all-new powerplant truly set the stage as the prototype for the flood of high compression OHV V-8’s from virtually all the manufacturers in the 1950’s. Of course the Chrysler 300 from 1955 raised the performance bar with a 300hp version of the 331ci Hemi, which was also very successful in competition. Ford countered with superchargers, Chevrolet with fuel injection, and multiple carburetors were common on all makes. Engine displacements and horsepower rose rapidly in the early 60’s with 400 plus horses available in all full size models. In 1963, Pontiac engineers quietly replaced the modest 326 CI V-8 with a 389 CI version,

intended by GM policy for use only in full size cars such as the Catalina and Bonneville models into the new mid-size A-body Tempest. The result of this covert experiment resulted in the debut of the 1964 Pontiac GTO.

The formula of a factory installed large displacement powerplant in a mid-size body Initially, production was set at only 5000 units, but over 32,000 were actually built in an attempt to meet overwhelming demand. The formula of a factory installed large displacement powerplant in a mid-size body truly defined what we now know today as the Muscle Car. And hand-in-hand

with the release of the GTO was a superb marketing effort that appealled to the enthusiastic youth market that Pontiac saw as the future. Of course all competitors rushed out similar versions such as the Chevelle SS 396, Olds 442, Buick GS, Ford Fairlane GT, Mercury Cyclone, Dodge R/T, Plymouth Road Runner and even The Machine by AMC. By the early 70’s the horsepower party was over with insurance cost, fuel economy, and emission controls ending this unprecedented era of performance. So what really is the first Muscle Car? While there is no clear answer, it is certain that this era saw styling, innovation, and horsepower increase at a furious pace that is gone forever... Except to those who still have the opportunity to awaken a rumbling old-school big block, plant our right foot to the floor, and row that magnificent Hurst shifter thru all 4 gears. Then it seems like only yesterday! M MECUMMONTHLY

The Real Barn Finds DAN MECUM

A tale of two 430s

The 30 series tractors were the last line of the famous John Deere two-cylinder tractors. In the 30 series, the model 430 was the economical all-purpose tractor. The tractor was great for handy work on a big farm, or capable of handling virtually any job on a small farm. The John Deere 430 tractor could be defined as the sum of 40 years of two-cylinder tractor perfection. The tractors came with an inline vertical two-cylinder engine that was recently introduced on the previous 420 model. The engine had a 7:1 compression ratio and produced 29 horsepower at the belt pulley. Most tractors came with a 4-speed transmission, although a 5-speed could be ordered. Collectors should be on the look out for 430’s with power steering as they could bring up to a 20% premium. Another important option to look for is a direction reverser, which allows the use of any forward gears while backing up. The John Deere 430 line was

introduced in July of 1958 and was manufactured through February of 1960. The two 430 tractors we have found are both of 1959 vintage, and both tractors were used on Tobacco farms in the South. Although these hidden

Jerry found the 430 in the hills of Lafeyette, Tennessee just across the border of Kentucky on his way to look at some cattle. The tractor was still in service and bared all of its battle scars. After his purchase he took the tractor home and sent it to Kelch’s Restorations in Ohio to get the same exceptional restoration all his tractors had. Jerry’s 1 of 9 720 high crop tractor that Wendell Kelch had restored ended up the Gone Farmin’ top selling tractor in 2011 at $117,500. The 430 in its original condition worked on a Tobacco farm in North Carolina, and unlike Jerry’s 430 that was worked to the bone, this tractor has been stored for over 30 years until it was recently purchased from the original owner’s family. Which tractor has more value in today’s market? Both tractors will be offered at the Gone Farmin’ Spring tractor auction April 14, 2012, and will attempt to settle the age old debate. M

This leads to the age-old question to the collectors: original vs. restored. treasures share many similarities, one tractor was given a no expense spared restoration and the other

remains in it’s original working clothes. This leads to the age-old question to the collectors: original vs. restored. The first time I saw the restored 430 was on trip to Glasgow Kentucky to visit Jerry Anderson.

DIVERSITY RULES

The new Mantra for Mecum Auctions’ exploding business in 2012 is “Diversity Rules”, adding motorcycles on a regular basis to the mix at all the major auctions this year. After a year of trial and error, the eyeballs have it, not only do the Velocity Network (formerly HD Theater) global audiences love watching the energy of the big ‘Muscle Cars and More’ crossing the block along with a select handful of wood boats, they also discovered the two wheel fraternity added to their audience figures. Instead of trying to figure out which auction and what day to consign or buy classic motorcycles, Mecum will feature bikes in the program this year on a value or interest basis, not just as a single lump on a specific day as in 2011. Many car collectors love bikes and many classic bike collectors covet cars, but the crossover has never really been addressed, so starting in a small way at Kissimmee, leading into Kansas City and building toward Indy in May and Monterey in August, look for some tasty and exciting opportunities of the two wheel persuasion, not just for buyers, but we invite consignors to bring their pride and joy to whatever 22

region they are closest to. The core business and volume is still primarily automotive, but a limited number of bikes will provide an added spice to the show, so when you log onto the website, you will now see the yellow ‘quick click link’ bars below each

What Is It?

what is an

mv agusta? by DAVID NEWHARDT Well known in top-level motorcycle racing circles, MV Agusta is not a household name in the United States like fellow Italian motorcycle maker Ducati. But with more than 3000 race wins and more than 64 Championships, MV Agusta has been a major force on race tracks around the world. Like Ferrari, the street vehicles support the racing efforts. MV Agusta was founded in 1945 near Milan in Cascina Costa by Count Vincenzo Agusta and his brother Domenico. The initials MV stand for Meccanica, or mechanical, Verghera, the Italian town where the first MV’s were assembled. As Italy was recovering from WWII, there was a need for inexpensive transportation, and MV Agusta supplied the demand by building café-style, small-displacement motorcycles in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Yet racing shaped the direction the company moved, starting with the 1945 model 98. MV Agusta strove to build Grand Prix winning motorcycles from the moment they hung their shingle out, and with the 1948 winning of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza by Franco Bertoni, the company was a fixture on the podium. The company concentrated their efforts in the small and medium displacement arena, garnering success with 125- and 175-cc engines. Advanced technology and daring styling made the MV Agusta

line a favorite on the track and off. For example, American David Schuler rode a virtually stock MV 175 Sport that he borrowed to a 175-cc class win at the 1958 Catalina Island off-road GP race in California. MV Agusta lived by the mantra of winning on Sunday, selling on Monday. Championships were won with impressive regularity, as Count Agusta spent whatever it took to secure the best talent, whether on the track or at the designers table. The roster of winning riders reads like a Who’s Who, including John Surtees, Phil Read, and Giacomo Agostini, while the count wasn’t above poaching superb engineering talent such as Arturo Magni. The results justified the expense, as trophies flowed into MV Agusta’s headquarters. MV Agusta took a hard blow in 1971 with the passing of Count Domenico Agusta, and by 1980 the company was out of racing. Italian motorcycle manufacturer Cagiva purchased MV Agusta in 1991 and in 1997 released the acclaimed F4 model. It was available in 750-

and 1,000-cc versions, and was regarded as one of, if not the, finest sport motorcycles in the world. A number of limited-edition models have been released over the years, to widespread acclaim, such as the Tamburini 1000, named for Massimo Tamburini, the bike’s designer, and the F4 750- and 1,000-cc Senna editions, named after Ayrton Senna, an enthusiastic MV Agusta collector. The company went through a number of ownership progressions, and is currently owned by Claudio Castiglioni. MV Agusta has never been a volume manufacturer; a quality machine for discerning customers has been the business model. While the motorcycle makers from Japan offer impressive performance for significantly less money, MV Agusta has been, and continues to be, at the top of the list for desirable sport motorcycles. The collection offered by Mecum Auctions is the finest complete group of MV Agusta motorcycles in the world, irreplaceable and impressive. This is a collection second to none. M MECUMMONTHLY

Engine Stamp Standards Announced By: Guy Larsen & David Burroughs

What this means to you. As long as a Corvette scores at least 95% and the engine stamps APPEAR OEM, INCONCLUSIVE, or Declared in advance by the owner to be NON-OEM, it can be Gold Certified. However, the stamp type will be noted on all Certificates. This is designed to do three things: 1. Increase the recognition of Original engines 2. Decrease the need to re-stamp Replacement engines 3. Increase the motivation to preserve or restore Corvettes with either type

How it will work. Owners must declare IN ADVANCE which description best fits their engine and stamps.

BLOCK Original Replacement I Don’t Know STAMPINGS Original (OEM) CE (Counter Exch/Chev. Warranty) Reproduction Generic Blank I Don’t Know

If declared “Original (OEM) Stamp” or “I Don’t Know”, the owner gives consent for the inspector team to closely evaluate all stamps and use ALL available knowledge and tools. • If APPEARS OEM, it will be noted on form and be Gold eligible • If INCONCLUSIVE, it will be noted on form and be Gold eligible • If found Non-OEM, it will be noted on form and be limited to Silver that year. However, the owner may return and declare Non-OEM stamps the next time and the vehicle will then be eligible for Gold. Eliminating the need to do more re-stamping.

However, if the owner openly declared Non-OEM in the first place, the engine stamp pad will NOT be evaluated by any inspectors but will still remain eligible for Gold—regardless of the quality or presence of pad stampings. In other words, • If OWNER declares Non-OEM, the vehicle can get a Gold that year. • If INSPECTORS declare Non-OEM, the vehicle can not get a Gold that year. Good Advice: If you already know your stamps are Non-OEM, declare them. Don’t waste your money and a year by not declaring them.

CERTIFICATES TO INCLUDE “STAMP TYPE” Although Corvettes scoring at least 95% overall with OEM, INCONCLUSIVE or (owner declared) Non-OEM engine stamps may receive a Gold Certificate, each certificate (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) will now include a separate engine stamp designation in Plain English.

Appears OEM No detectable deviation from known OEM stamps Inconclusive Detectable deviation unknown among OEM stamps, yet unclear whether OEM or not. Owner Declared Non-OEM Stamps may range from nearly perfect replicas to totally missing. Since already declared Non-OEM by the owner, there is nothing left to determine. The level of quality makes it no less Non-OEM.

Bottom Line. Bloomington Gold will channel the knowledge of our stamp inspectors and depth of their databases for the greater good of the Corvette and collector car community — Providing people useful descriptions rather than only awards and titles.

Special Warning Although Bloomington Gold’s enhanced Standards are more tolerant of replacement engines, discovery of purposeful MISREPRESENTATION will be dealt with swiftly, firmly, and “creatively”. Although Bloomington Gold is NOT interested in being the “stamp police,” it should not be assumed no one will notice or that the inarguable evidence won’t surface later. It often does.

If you know it, declare it.

Give us your feedback. Guy@BloomingtonGold.com or David@BloomingtonGold.com FOR COMPLETE DETAILS

THE transport HOME by BOB SELLERS

You have just won the bid, you’ve just paid for your new “dream car” and now you have to get it home. There are a number of ways you can get your vehicle home from the auction. For many first time buyers, their first thought may be to do it the “old fashion way” and drive it home. Not always the best option considering the distances, unknown mechanical conditions and the simple fact that your time is money. Another option may be to

hire a “broker”, a third party source who can search out a variety of shipping options on your behalf. These folks are not usually at the auctions and sell the work to an available carrier. You must be sure of equipment types and insurance issues when using this type of service. You can also hire a carrier to transport your purchase and there are numerous carriers available for this option. The preferred carrier of Mecum Auctions is Reliable Carriers who are on site at every Mecum

auction with a full staff of personnel who stay on site until the last car is loaded. Additionally, Reliable Carriers bring enough trucks to the events to get all cars out of the venues in a timely manner. Reliable has over 350 trucks available, all staffed with highly qualified drivers. Each trailer is covered with $5M of cargo insurance to protect your new purchase. Please visit our booth and consider taking the “easy way home.” M
